For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
Repaint! And boy did it need it.
I know John has a different appearance according to Muir herself but... I can't stop picturing him like this lol... he's just a guy 🤷♀️

My favorite poem - Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me,
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love --
I and my Annabel Lee --
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me --
Yes! -- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we --
Of many far wiser than we --
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee,
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling -- my darling -- my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea --
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Top 5 scenes in black sails for me (a show built on perfects scenes) is (spoilers) that slow zoom on woodes rogers as he’s confronted with Eleanor’s corpse, and then as the music swells and the church bells in the distance begin (wedding bells? A funeral procession?) we find Eleanor looking back at him, darling, dearest, dead. At his own hand. Does he know she died being cradled and comforted by the pirate he despises? Does he know her last words were that of a wife, not the woman and leader she once was. That the character she becomes is a purposeful shell of the person she was, dutifully crafted at her own hand to fit the mold of someone woodes rogers would love, someone pirates would hate. Damn was Eleanor as a character exasperating at times but oh my god was Eleanor as lady death, tearing herself down and thrashing at her own visage until she’s steamrolled into the dead, perfect wife in woodes roger’s heroic story of high sea adventure and politic intrigue compelling. Eleanor is the only “fridged” woman I have ever seen who’s death was her choice. She chose, through every little decision she made, to become the kind of woman who dies for a man’s narrative, thus successfully solidifying her place as the forever beautiful and tragic lost wife of a man who, in another show, may have been the charming, morally upright main character. And I’m struck, I’m breathless at rogers’ last moments with her, her head suddenly turned to face him, a single tear trailing down her face. I wonder, if she’d had known where she ended, would she have done anything differently. Would it have mattered. Was she dead the moment she decided to control Nassau, or the moment she left it. He says “I’m sorry” to her, and I wonder does she forgive him.

📚 Beautiful Books part 4: Edgar Allan Poe Collected Works by Edgar Allan Poe 📚
Got this book for Christmas last year, along with other books, published by Canterbury Classics. They have a lot of options in terms of books, some of which I own and will review in future posts. On the cover we can see our good friend, Edgar Allan Poe on a red background, with elements referring to some of his stories like a raven for “The Raven” or a heart for “The Tell-Tale Heart” (my favourite of his short stories). The rest of the book cover is black.
In the back, there’s what looks like an old mansion on a red background with a murder of crows flying over it.
The spine has 4 hubs, and God only knows how I love me some hubs lol. 2 on top and the other 2 at the bottom. We can see a heart as well as a raven over this obsidian background.
The end paper is not my favourite, but still pretty cool nonetheless. A brick wall with a skeleton inside.
Inside, we can find a picture of our beautiful sad boy Edgar Allan Poe. Such a shame we’ve lost him. Obviously, a long time ago, but still.
The side of the pages are decorated with gold.
The text is pretty small, but not too bad. I still have to put my face really close to be able to read, with a total of 724 pages.
And we have a gorgeous dark red bookmark ribbon inside, which pairs well with the black of the book. Beautiful goth masterpiece.
My favourite part of this book has to be the spine, because of the multiple hubs and the little heart drawing.
Fun fact about Edgar Allan Poe: He would often write with his Siamese cat on his shoulder. 🖤
