The Captain - Leah Williamson

When you reunite with your best friend after 2 years of facetime only, it was bound to get emotional.

You had deployed into the Royal Navy the moment you turned 18, started off as a Petty Officer, and making your way up the ranks until you were a Captain. You were only 23 when you got the rank, but your first mission was a 2 year long stay on your ship - the HMS Medway - in the Carribbean, you were allowed to Skype and text your family, but you couldn't see them.

It was never much problem not to talk to your birth family, they never agreed with any of your decisions - sexuality or career especially.

But not being able to talk to the Williamson's - to Leah - was definitely difficult.

Leah had been your best friend since birth, the both of you growing up in Milton Keynes, neighbours for your whole life.

You went from seeing each other everyday, to once every couple months, to your only source of communication being Skype.

You were overjoyed for your best friend when she got the role as Interim Captain at the beginning of 2022, and we're even happier for her when she got announced as the actual captain for the Euros.

You knew you needed to be there.

And not just for the final, you wanted to be there for the first match.

So you spoke to your Commanding Officer, your Admiral, but you didn't want to just take a break. You asked him to discharge you.

It was a hard decision, but after 7 years of service, and no life outside your ship for 2 years, you knew it was about time that you take on your next challenge.

Away from the Royal Navy.

But back in London.

He understood greatly, and told you that should you ever wish to come back, your ship would be awaiting you.

And while you gave him a gentle smile,

you knew you were never coming back for good.

6th June 2022.

The opening of the Euro's.

England V Austria.

Kick off was at 8pm, in Manchester, Old Trafford.

You arrived in Manchester at 5pm, still fully kitted out in your captain's uniform, your cap set snug on your head.

As soon as you touched down, you messaged the person you trusted most - other than Leah - Lucy Bronze.

You'd known her since Leah broke out in the England squad, and Lucy had become somebody you confided in pretty easily.

You knew she could keep the surprise from Leah - unlike her counterpart, Keira - and would help you out.

So, 10 minutes later, Lucy pulled up at the private airstrip, helping your bags into the car and smiling proudly at you.

You pulled her straight into a hug, relishing in human contact from somebody who wasn't your employee.

"Y/n, it's so good to see you. Two years is way too long." She told you, opening the car door for you and letting you sit in her passenger seat.

You sighed, taking your cap off and placing it on the dashboard in front of you. "I've missed you, Luce."

"Not as much as you've missed Leah, though, I'm sure."

"Well, I hope to never miss her again." You told her.

Her head snaps towards you. "What d'you mean?"

"I'm never going back to the Navy, London will be my home now, Leah will be my home again."

The drive was comfortable, music playing as she drove you to the hotel everybody was staying at, they didn't have to be at Old Trafford until 6:30, ready for warm ups at 7:30, so Lucy organised with Sarina for you to come to the hotel for a bit.

Sarina was more than happy to ablige, a captain of the Royal Navy, one of the only female ones out there.

But as you turned up to the hotel, Lucy couldn't convince you to get out of the car.

"It's been two years, Lucy, what if we aren't the same!" You worried, making her hold your shoulders and force you to look at her.

"Okay, if you're truly that nervous, don't go in there as y/n, 18 year old who first started out in the Navy. Go in there as Captain y/l/n. The youngest female Captain of the Royal Navy. Go in there and stand proud. You are in your uniform, show them why you are what you are."

You took a deep breath and picked up your cap, placing it on your hand.

Lucy patted your thigh softly. "I'll get your bags. You go get your girl."

A blush grew on your face and you looked at her with wide eyes. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

She just scoffed. "Yeah, sure."

None of the lionesses were in the Lobby, but Sarina was, waiting for you. She greeted you with a warm smile and a handshake, thanking you for your service - even if she wasn't English, she was honourably one for the rest of her time as the England Coach.

She told you that she was going to call a meeting, that you can wait in another room until everybody was in there and then you'd sneak into the room.

You nodded with a soft smile, agreeing with the plan, knowing that the Lionesses were going to see a very different side to their captain.

And that they did.

With all 23 girls sat in the little meeting room, Lucy having been the last one in, you quietly opened the door and slid in.

A trick you'd learned in your 7 years of service.

Keira, who'd been facing the door, instantly opened her mouth in shock, about to speak until you put a finger up to your mouth.

Slowly but surely, each of the girls figured out you were there - not that they all knew who you were - but didn't say anything, Leah was still unaware.

You snuck up behind her and took off your cap, putting it behind your back, with your arms interlocked - standing at ease, the most comfortable you could feel anymore.

You bent down slowly, until your breath was fanning on her ear. And as she began to turn around to face you, you spoke.

"Hello, my darling, it's been a while." She gasps and stands up instantly, turning around like the flash.

She threw her arms over you and pulled you into the tightest hug she ever had before.

You snuck your arm around her and placed your cap on the table, letting your arms fall tightly around her waist, breathing in her scent.

The comfort of your best friend.

Without even thinking, as soon as she pulled away out of the hug a little, to speak, you pushed your lips against hers.

The rest of the lionesses let out hollers, but neither of you paid them any attention.

She kissed you back with just as much passion.

It felt like just the two of you.

Just as it had many years ago.

Idk how much I like this, but I love the premise, and as somebody who spent many years of her life as a sea cadet, there are some things in life that my heart will always find peace with.

One of my WIP transports the company to our world shortly before they're supposed to reach Rivendell, and into the apartment of my OFC.

Bofur: modern music (especially pop songs with dirty lyrics), Tumblr (is no. 1 shit-poster), music festivals, arts&crafts blogs, Christopher's Streets Day

Bifur: Google Translate, Modern Medicine, Pain Medication, ASL, RomComs (trust me), helps out in an animal shelter, country music

Bombur: Cooking Shows (has his own Online Show), Kindergarten (he had so many children, the reprieve would be SO appreciated), international foodstuff to try

Saint Kitts and Nevis is “not totally free” under King Charles III, the country’s prime minister has said.

The King is the head of the two-island sovereign state – with Saint Kitts the first Caribbean island that English colonists permanently settled.

Saint Kitts and Nevis prime minister Dr Terrance Drew also said he would welcome an apology from the monarchy for its historic links to the slave trade.

Buckingham Palace told the BBC that the King has pledged to deepen his understanding of the impact of slavery, something he takes “profoundly seriously”.

“That learning process has continued with vigour and determination since His Majesty’s accession,” Buckingham Palace said.

The palace noted that the King “has long acknowledged the discussion about constitutional arrangements”.

In a speech to Commonwealth leaders last year, the King said: “Each member’s constitutional arrangement, as republic or monarchy, is purely a matter for each member country to decide.”

Last month, Buckingham Palace said it was supporting and cooperating with an independent study into the relationship between the British monarchy and the transatlantic slave trade.

Speaking about the study, Dr Drew said: “I think that acknowledging that ... something wrong was done, acknowledging it and apologising for it, is a step in the right direction.”

He added: “We are not just speaking about a monetary contribution, because we are not acting like victims.

“It is about real changes even within the systems that are still affecting people of African descent in negative ways.”

During the then Prince of Wales’s visit to Barbados in 2021, Buckingham Palace said reparations are a political matter for individual governments to address.

There is widespread support for compensation for the descendants of enslaved Africans throughout the Carribbean. A 10-point plan was proposed in 2014 by the Caricom Reparations Commission, made up of 15 member states including Barbados, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

The plan includes cash payments, development funding, and formal apologies by states with historical links to the slave trade.

The King and Prince William have previously expressed personal sadness about slavery.

During a visit to Rwanda last year, the then Prince of Wales said he could not describe “the depths of his personal sorrow” at the suffering caused by the slave trade.

In April, prime minister Rishi Sunak refused to formally apologise for the UK’s historic role in the slave trade, saying: “Trying to unpick our history is not the right way forward.”

Last week, representatives from 12 Commonwealth countries joined forces to call on the King to acknowledge and apologise for the impact and ongoing legacy of British “genocide and colonisation”.

The statement called on the King to act on the royal family’s recent expressions of sorrow by beginning a process for reparations and returning stolen artefacts and bodily remains.

Chronicles of the isles stories as aesthetics

Chronicles of the isles is a collection of short stories that follows a group of pirates as they collect ancient artefacts and attempt to stop the return of a cursed god.

Most stories take place in very different locations to eachother, so to get a glimpse into what the isles universe is like, here are the mood boards for each part.

Part I: Ship's graveyard

Ships graveyard follows the origin story of the Titans, a pirate crew that the isle's stories centre around. More particularly, Catherine webb, a runaway bride who quite literally runs into a pirate captain's second hand on a beach. The majority of ship's graveyard is spent trying to recover a family heirloom that has been stolen from Catherine. If you like pirates of the carribbean you would like the ship's graveyard stories.

Part II: A village called murder

In a village called murder we get an insight into Catherine webb's family. It is made up of two stories, the first going back in time to follow a young Cassandra Lawrence (Catherine's mother) as she tries to catch a small town serial killer after the murder of her father, and the second where the titan's meet Catherine's brother Curtis as they look for an ancient artefact. This is the storyline for fans of sherlock holmes.

Part III: Selenia valley

Selenia valley is for the fans of the classic fantasy story. The titans are invited to a masquerade ball hosted by one of the most highly regarded families which soon turns dark as they get blackmailed into breaking a curse and finding a pearl necklace before sunrise.

Part IV: Cirque d'etoiles

Cirque d'etoiles focuses around a mysterious circus that only appears for three months of the year and then disappears over night. Lana one night finds that her younger sister Molly is being led away from home by members of the circus and finds that the circus is locked in a magical contract where they must kidnap one child to become part of the act whenever they leave a location.

Part V: Metaloc

The titans are on the run, wanted for a crime they didn't commit. After running into a fellow runaway they find that they need to pulloff a heist at one of the most important royal balls of the year.

Part VI: the lotus forest

The titans meet with an old friend in the region of the lotus forest in hopes of gaining an audience with the queen. This leads to them entering the tournament of champions, a deadly competition where there can only be one winner.

Part VII: The dissappearing islands

The titans enlist the help of another old friend as they try to reach the mysterious dissappearing islands, legendary islands that only seem to appear once every century as they try to piece together what happened to the last group of people to set foot on the island.

Part VIII: Deep lagoon

The titans are summoned to the court of xymor, god of the ocean (among other things) in order to be judged as to weather or not they are worthy of being in possession of a powerful artefact.

Part IX: Draig cave

The titans make an unlikely alliance for a quest to venture deep into a system of caves as they discover more and more about the guild of the divine, an ancient group of warriors who used to roam the isles. Fans of merlin and dnd would like this storyline.

The Story: (tw; murder, blood, drowning, fire, nightmares)

On board a ship that was so valiantly named The Serpent's Blood, a pirate captain and his appointed queen fell madly in love after killing her terrible husband. They abandoned her village life permanently for the high seas and birthed a daughter. Until the age of 5 years old, she was loved for and cared for by her parents, watching them pillage and plunder from below deck, watching her mother clean off her bloody sword. But life with this family went as soon as it came, for a raid by a mystery navy crew ended the lives of her parents and their entire crew, leaving the child as its only survivor. The poor girl washed up on the shores of Sicily, found by its kings and taken into their family. She had no memory of her previous life, no recollection of the raid. She was speechless, completely in shock. The kings named her "Maria", for she came from the sea and was given to them as a beloved gift. She grew up loved, learning to sail the moment she regained her voice. Though rebellious in nature and defiant by desire, she was a difficult, yet devoted child. Having younger siblings, as she grew older, only made it easier for her to sprinkle her bad influence all over them, taking them out to bars, going out with sailors, and learning their pirate heritage from the pirates themselves. One of those outings with the sailors lead Maria to a pirate captain's son. While contentious at first, their relationship grew from constant bickering to sailing a ship together and falling madly in love with one another on the high seas. They kept their affair a secret from her family, for fear that they wouldn't approve due to her being a princess and he a mere pirate. Whilst sailing together on a blissful evening, a navy ship arrived, arresting her lover for crimes of piracy and imprisoning him in the Caribbean. Maria was able to escape, but in doing so, she lost the love of her life, wondering if she were to ever see him again. She'd written diplomatic letters in hopes that he would be released to her as a personal bodyguard, but alas, there was no word in return. She was left to believe that he was dead, and so Maria relented and agreed to journey with her family to France to give up her fantasy romance on the high seas. However... Ever since that night, when love slipped through her fingers, Maria has been having the same nightmares. She believed, at first, that they were visions of the raid, but it was more than that. She seemed to be hiding below deck of a ship she did not recognize, blood, fire, and smoke surrounding her. Could it be those missing years from her childhood? Could there be something connecting her now to her birth parents? Now that there was little hope of her love surviving, she could bury her broken heart in research, attempting to discover who she is and where she really came from.

Established Connections:

The De La Rosa Family. The Pirates-Turned-Royals are the toughest of the other royals families that reside in Versailles, though they tend to come off the most awkward at most royal function, particularly when it comes to horseback riding. Her Papí, Diego, is the easiest for people to approach, and Maria turns to him in vulnerable times where she needs reassurance and comfort. One could look to her Papá, Vero, and see exactly where her stoic and rigid personality came from, and therefore he is often the only one she'll listen to. Felix, her brother, is quite the opposite from her, yet she would protect them with her life, along with her sibling-in-law, Mechai.

Jakob Hölm. Fiancé. What she needed more than forgiveness was redemption, a chance to make up for the years at sea, abandoning her royal life for constant voyages. Choosing Jakob as her betrothed, which would make him the future King of Sicily, was the only thing she felt she could do; give the people a king they deserve. She finds him kind, easy to talk to, and comforting, and the fact that she wants to be near him is entirely confusing to her.

Wednesday 25th January 2023

Oh we sailed the ocean blue

And the saucy ship's a beauty.......

Messrs Royal Carribbean generously and lavishly furnished our lowly inside stateroom with an outside awareness panel. Whilst this could be a posh name for a window, it wasn't. It is in reality an enormous TV turned on end, from floor to ceiling and with fitted curtains. When we initially entered the room it was displaying real time views of Sydney Circular Quay from the pointy end of the boat. However, whilst trying to get the room TV to show a program other than paw patrol or similar, unnoticed at first was the lack of any image on the outside awareness panel anymore. No end of frenetic button pushing appeared to have the desired effect of restoring our sole link with the world beyond. A fresh approach this morning has fixed it I think by a totally different sequence of button pushing. However, the picture displayed was not entirely encouraging. Someone had removed sunny Sydney and replaced it with wet grey ocean. We are now ploughing through the Tasman Sea with nothing on the horizon. Nothing! The sun now high behind a partially cloudy sky, but nonetheless warm as we sit at the blunt end drinking coffee watching the frothy wake of this enormous tub dissolve into the distance. Here it is peaceful. We tried the library for solitude and calm but there was an American with a huge gob midway through delivering a game of bingo! With Olivia Newton John also adding to the noise output from beyond the grave contrary to all library rules I'm aware of. We had to leave.

The main preoccupations on board revolve

around eating in one form or the other. There are copious numbers of obese Americans aboard but the food supply appears sufficient even to provide for the insatiable demands of the human vacuum cleaners. It is possible to eat something 24 hours a day! There is even a fish and chip shop dispensing free product! (You pay for the lobster tails).

To try to counteract the effects of an increased calorie intake, we are exercising; pool and gym currently are favourite. We have also managed 5km speed walk around the ship's upper deck. 9 laps in total equal 5k. Having recovered 310 kcals back into the system we endured our evening meal which was also the first of the formal dinners. No DJ, so jacket sufficed. Light seafood fare was best followed by the evening 8pm show in a theatre that could acquit itself proudly alongside anything the west end has. The star, and for that matter only performer apart from his band was a one Bevan Addinsall. You might imagine the chief cruise entertainment manager giving instruction to the Acme stage agency to get me a 'crack' performer! I said 'crack' with a k. Sorry I thought you said something else. Well he could hold a note, but the really creepy thing was he was the 12 year old winner of a youth talent contest in the early 80s, and he sung a duet with a film image of his younger self!

With that behind him, we went on to repertoire renditions known only to his doting grey haired fan club in the audience which were apathetically received. Thankfully he did not receive an encore.

4. What film is TERRIBLE but you love it?

This is where my love for Karl Urban forgives all, Doom. My enjoyment of this movie is totally down to my love of him because he is such a soft sub in this movie, but it is terrible. Also, Priest (2011) as well, expect this time he’s a dominate vampire.

11. What’s the worst film you’ve ever seen?

Pirates of the Carribbean 3: Whatever the fuck it's called, is the worst movie I have ever seen. It literally and I do mean the original definition of that word, gave me a headache. If I hadn't been in my own house, watching it for a friends birthday, I would have walked out. Awful. Just awful.

Dishonourable mentions also go to The Good Night, which was slow and dull and Quantum of Solace, which dull and incomprehensible. Honestly, as soon as Quantum of Solace had finished I turned to my friend and was like, "either I'm thick or that movie made no sense," it was such a disappointment after Casino Royale.
