Fantastic Four #28 (Apr 9, 1964)
The Mad Thinker & the Puppet Master team up and use the X-Men to battle the Fantastic Four. Inexplicably, just when they're on the verge of victory, the villains reveal their plan and monologue themselves into defeat.
The Mad Thinkers abilities might be overrated.
Lee / Kirby / Stone

You know, as much as I defend Stan Lee’s original Silver Age run on the X-Men, I don’t think he quite understood how Magneto’s powers (or magnetism in general) were supposed to work...
Lol! I had no idea magnetism allows you to create psychic astral projections of yourself or to hypnotize others into obeying your every command!

I feel like marvel has better characters (in the 60s, at least) and a better narrative voice. I'm going to pin this on Stan Lee. Stan Lee gave marvel a very distinctive voice. It's jokey and fun and bombastic and so much more. Look at all their alliteration, jokey nicknames (stan had so many nicknames for himself when he wrote footnotes), etc. I don't think DC did that stuff, and that made them seem stuffy and out of touch. I've heard that was what happened, at least. All I know is: Marvel's unique voice makes me gravitate towards wanting to read their old stuff more.
