#also i want shigaraki and deku to destroy each other in the manga
Note
Hey I’m back with my ideas. :)
(I’m the burnt out request) 💪
(English is not my first language so I’m sorry for grammar errors)
First off, I’m so happy you took time to read and write my request!! It was just so *🤌🤌.* perfect.
How are you today?? I hope you’re doing well. it’s finally October!
Anyways-I’m back because my brain is going places fr.
You don’t have to respond to this at all if you don’t want to I’m just here to dump it all. Because why not?
Okay so, Bakugou is in like his late 20’s or whatever idk I never had like a solid age set in my mind. So, mans is probably like the number 2 hero and my guy is successful. point is-he has been thru it.
Enter reader right
The reader is in class 1A and they had just won the UA sports festival and managed to get 1st place. I imagine reader being like a mini-bakugou at times and they make a-lot of jokes as ice breakers. Like it can be out of no where too.
Ofc after the UA festival the students get internships offers and shit and they get an internship from The DYNAMIGHT like wtf so obviously they accept it.
They start to get close (although it’s not easy) slowly they start getting more comfortable with eachother.
(Reader will tell the worst dad jokes sometimes and They can swear that one time bakugou cracked a smile they swear are not delusional-)
who knows maybe Bakugou starts seeing them as a little sibling or someone he cares about. And one day when they are both out for patrol there’s a nomu attack aimed at bakugou. And reader gets really injured from pushing him out of the way when the nomu tried to attack him (totally not trying to protect Bakugou)but it results in reader getting heavily injured and bakugou finding them bleeding.
I crave angst.
What do you think his reaction would be?
Honestly this has been in my head ever since I heard this random song on the radio. Ever since that, girlie got to imaging similar scenarios.
Enjoy reading my mess thank u for coming to my red talk
The 🤌 anon
Oh, he sees himself in you, but a version of himself not so jaded. One who hasn't died and been brought back, one who was able to just help people, which is your goal, deep down. Not like fucking Uravity, who's only in it for the money or goddamn Ingenium, who has familial issues so big he must become them to live up to them.
No, he sees what he thought he could be, who he looked up to. He sees the potential to be a good, virtuous hero. And he knows what happens to kids like that.
Deku, rest his soul, was just like you years ago. Bright eyed and filled with a purpose. Villains latch onto that. He lets villains latch onto himself for it. He can handle it. He will handle it.
But you, you can't.
Your quirk is good, he'll give you that. It's pure firepower. Flashy too, easy to make a brand off of. But it'll draw bad attentions, one your good heart wouldn't be able to handle.
He's spent the past week with you. He knows who you're all about. Funny and a bit angry at the world, but with a drive and a desire to fix it. Trust him, Bakugou knows all about the world needing fixing. He's spent the past decade trying to do it to atone. But you are good. Not deep down or hidden, but truly, wholly good.
And he'll be damned before someone else can taint that. Because all he can think about is you dead on the pavement or your body eroding and leaving nothing behind, like the only other hero better than he was. He sees your potential and he sees himself in you, but he also sees the one person he wasn't able to save and dammit, he won't let what happened to Deku happen to you. Even if Shigaraki and all For One and the rest of the damned league is dead.
You live. and people will take advantage of that.

[BNHA MANGA SPOILERS]
--
How Shigaraki and Deku parallel each other in almost every way, and how that leads to the AFO is Dekus dad theory.
They both were children that wanted to be heroes as a child, but were rejected by society for reasons that they could not control, which leads to them being taken in by a mentor who promised to make things better for them and make them more powerful, knowing that this would hurt them both physically and mentally
While Shigarakis mentor had worse intentions and did nothing but make him believe he was a monster made for hurting others and destroying the hero society, Dekus mentor had good intentions and wants him to become the symbol of peace to help hero society and be able to save others.
Even if we’re going down to physical appearances, younger Shigaraki canonically looked a LOT like Deku [it literally says in the wiki]. And if I really over analyze it, they now both wear similar, same shade red, shoes.
Shigarakis grandmother was a hero, and had a relation to Dekus mentor [All Might], so it would make a lot of sense if Deku had a parent, or a relative of some sort, that was in some way related to the villains? Especially someone connected to Shigaraki right?
The only thing we know about Dekus dad is that he had a fire breathing quirk, and his first name was Hisashi, AFO has only had his last name revealed so far and the ability to steal any quirk he wants, why WOULDN’T he steal an easy fire breathing quirk?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This would make Shigaraki evil born from good, while Deku is good born from evil, and All Might has literally said ‘justice is always born from evil’.
And the rough translation of Hisashi Mindoriyas name means ‘its bean a long time [since i last saw you]’.
AFO stealing peoples quirks sounds very similar to how Deku ‘steals’ his classmates techniques [EX: him using blackwhip the same way tsuyu uses her tongue]
And while Deku is still unable to use 100% of OFAs power, he has the ability to use the previous users' quirks, which none of the other users had. And if AFO was his dad, it would mean the first user of OFA was his uncle and Deku would have the closest blood connection with him, which would explain how he was able to do this.
We’ve been told that AFO stole a search quirk from Ragdoll that allows him to know where everyone is in a certain radius, who they are, what their quirks are and what their weaknesses are, however in kamino when deku and the others were behind that wall and AFO made his big first appearance, he didn't notice them, and he SHOULD have, it'd be a logical decision if he attacked and killed them, but he didn’t.
The only time [that i know of] AFO talked about Deku, he was criticising All Mights teaching because he allowed Deku to hurt himself with OFA.
We already know that Dekus childhood doctor was also AFOs doctor, and depending on how you see it he could be there for a multitude of reasons. He could be there to ‘watch over’ Deku in a way, he could be there to steal his quirk, he could be there to simply TELL him that he was quirkless, but a lot of the theories would make you believe that theres someone else in charge telling the doctor what to do, and the doctor is known for being a ‘faithful servant’ to AFO.
Deku had the quirkless toe joint, which is an insanely uncommon feature in current BNHA, but was VERY common feature with the first generation of quirk users, which AFO is a part of.
Quirks influence peoples personalities [Toga having a fascination with blood, Shiggy having an 'itch to destroy’] and if Deku had AFO, he would manifest it in his personality. With AFO being a power tied to quirks, and Deku having an insane ability to understand quirks correctly, and being obsessed with other peoples quirks and understanding them would make sense.
Going down to physical appearances between Deku and AFO:
Deku is shown to have curly/wavy hair, while his mother has very straight hair, AFO is shown to have somewhat curly/wavy hair too. + Dekus hair is clearly lighter than his mothers, meaning his father would have to have a lighter hair, and AFO has white or VERY light blonde hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horikoshi has said that Dekus dad will be ‘revealed’ later in the story, and Horikoshi is known to be a huge fan of star wars, so man could very well pull a ‘i am your father’ HDSNNDFH
Anyways, I got really into this, over analyzed a lot and spent like an hour writing this so yes i am reaching a little here BUT IT MAKES SENSE I SWEAR ! !
[I posted this on twitter like 4 days ago but I wanted to see your guys opinions on it too,,]

Mysterylover watches MHA: “TDBKDK Family Dinner #2: Anime Version”
Tumblr media
So yes last episode we did cover the first half of the family dinner. Now we’re covering part 2. BTW this music is BIZARRE. Why are we recapping all this angst with triumphant music?
Anyway so let’s talk about this arc in general. Since I already posted about the manga chapter, I’m not sure what to add about the anime episode other than “hey, music choice” or “line delivery”, but I’ve reread this arc a lot so I feel like I wanna analyze it instead.
Tumblr media
3. Let’s talk about Bakugou. Bakugou’s arc throughout most of the series has been all about learning to care for other people. Learning the “save to win” part of things. He comes to the internship wanting to find “what he was missing”. In the climax, he rescues Natsuo from Ending. But the odd thing is, Bakugou already showed in the Joint Training arc that he was capable of saving people now. So it wasn’t that he needed to learn to save.
What Bakugou got from this arc, many fans believe, was the realization that he mistreated Deku and needed to make amends. All Might at the start of the arc points out that Bakugou is like Endeavor. This comparison was probably one Bakugou was making since the Sports Festival when he overheard Todo’s Backstory Confession to Deku. And here, Bakugou witnesses exactly what being an obsessive, violent asshole who pushes their loved ones away to become the top pro will end up with.
Tumblr media
Complete alienation. A family who will never forgive him.
Tumblr media
And Bakugou, I believe, wants Deku’s forgiveness and friendship back. He pushed Deku away - he admits to bullying him and hurting him in Chapter 284. And he’s trying to atone for his actions. From this arc, Bakugou learns that he needs to make things up to Deku. He doesn’t say so explicitly, but that’s what most fans take from it.
Endeavor can never truly make it up to his family, it seems, for all he did. Natsuo will never forgive him, Shoto probably won’t either. Now, currently in the manga Endeavor’s actions have spiraled out to pretty much destroy hero society thanks to Touya, so he’s become even more of a cautionary tale for Bakugou.
Tumblr media
What makes that even more interesting, though, is that Bakugou and Midoriya are two halves of one whole. So the same person who is an interesting foil and cautionary tale for Bakugou has to be one for Midoriya too. Given Deku’s current arc in the manga - pushing everyone who loves him away in an obsessive quest to be the best - it’s clear that Deku could maybe have benefitted from comparing himself to Endeavor too.
This hard-hitting examination of his own flaws is what makes Bakugou so compelling, especially in recent times. Unlike Endeavor, who seems to keep floundering back into the same mistakes, Bakugou just keeps improving.
Tumblr media
Shoto and Midoriya mostly got New Cool Moves out of this arc, and less on the Character Development scale. Deku’s conversation with Shoto about being a “nice person” was something a lot of the fandom eviscerated him for back in the day (before the arc had wrapped) since Natsuo overheard it and felt bad about it.
Tumblr media
Deku is a very forgiving person, I’ve never seen him hold a genuine grudge (he’s currently on a quest to save the Supervillain who kidnapped his soulmate, which is about as forgiving as you get). But while holding grudges can be bad, Deku’s mindset may also be problematic. Being too forgiving of evil done to you and others can also cause problems. Deku’s advice to Shoto was well-intentioned, but it had the unintended side effect of guilt-tripping Natsuo and making him feel like a bad person.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, even though Deku is the unofficial Todoroki Family Counsellor, he’s never really been able to help Shoto and the fam get through their trauma all on his own. “It’s your Power” was a great moment, but in the aftermath Shoto wasn’t sure what to do with it. He needed to go work through his own problems afterwards. Deku can’t magically fix all the Todo family’s problems, even though he’d like to. To some degree, given the Sports Fest and this arc, it seems like Shoto may need the help of both Halves of the Wonder Duo.
Fighting Bakugou forced Shoto into the position where he had to face his past trauma. His fight with Inasa revealed that he still holds resentment against Endeavor, and that resentment wasn’t something he could - or should! - just be zen about. So what’s Bakugou’s approach to being harmed by someone?
Bakugou has channeled his anger over Shigaraki abducting him into productive motivation. Maybe I’m letting my recent FMA binge watch bias me as to how the story is going to go, but my guess is that the message may be something like Winry’s story there. No need to forgive people who’ve done something terrible for you; instead, learn to channel anger into motivation and power. That seems to be how Bakugou is handling Shigaraki, and maybe it’s how he can help Shoto handle Endeavor too.
Tumblr media
Well, that’s not so much clear in this arc, but anyway. Back to Deku and Kacchan’s story. So Deku pretty clearly holds nothing against Kacchan for mistreating him (look at how cheerfully he interacts with him in this arc! Very, very shippy stuff, they’re every bit the Old Married Couple here). So if Bakugou needs to make amends to Deku, and Todoroki needs to channel his anger, what does Deku need to do?
Given the most recent arc, it’s clear Deku needs to learn to rely on other people. That’s his overall arc. In this arc, we see him doing the Evacuation portion, using BlackWhip to save lives. But we also see Kacchan saving Natsuo and Shoto beating Ending. When the Trinity work together as a team, they surpass the #1 pro. That’s probably why they weren’t able to do so before Natsuo was taken.
Deku needs Kacchan’s strength and confidence. Shoto needs Kacchan’s ability to channel his anger. Kacchan and Shoto both need Deku’s kindness and compassion. Deku and Kacchan needed Shoto’s cautionary tale to mend things with each other. Together, of course, they are the best trio. Who win, rescue, and save together.
Tumblr media
in other words, The trinity need each other. Duh.

I really want Shigaraki to save himself with the help of Spinner and maybe his other comrades. But Deku was given a goal so is there a way to make both happen?
I honestly think so!
So maybe the single biggest hurdle when it comes to saving Shigaraki is all of the raging hate burning in his heart. It clouds his judgement and drives his goal of complete and utter destruction beyond any amount of reason or offer of mercy.
The thing is: hate isn't an emotion unique to the villains.
Tumblr media
Hate seeks to destroy, to obliterate what's frightening or uncertain. It burns hot and fast and eats up anything in its path.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But love overcomes hate. It can also be irrational and unyielding in the face of opposition, and it's powerful.
It's also not unique to the heroes or civilians.
It's not even a question at this point that the reason the LoV survived the attack of the MLA and Gigantomachia is because the members of the League pulled together and used the love and support they had for each other, themselves, and Shigaraki as their leader to overcome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MVA was a powerful and dramatic arc in the series because it gave us a chance to look at the world from their perspectives: underdogs in a fight they had no hope of winning, but their pride and overwhelming drive to survive so they could keep living as they wished pushed them through to the other side.
The problem, of course, is still that their goal is one of destruction, and that goal is rooted in hate.
Tumblr media
But for all the horrible, toxic environment the League has festering within itself, there is one silver lining I hope Hori capitalizes on. The LoV has zero interest in fighting to restore peace to the world when it was that same society that drove them to this extreme to begin with; but what if they were offered the chance to save Shigaraki and their goal becomes rooted in love instead?
Tumblr media
Deku's ultimate battle is still with AFO like it has been since the beginning of the manga. What's changed, though, is that it's clear that Shigaraki is even less of AFO's successor as he is his ongoing victim, so Deku wants to save him, too, if he can.
It's entirely possible the final boss battle may include the heroes teaming up with League members who are still loyal to Shigaraki specifically to loosen AFO's hold over his body and set him free again. AFO needs Shigaraki's hatred to steal OFA, but if Tomura were to let it go, AFO loses. It's plausible that in order to stop AFO to begin with, they have to save Shigaraki. Maybe, with the help and love of all the members still loyal to him, Tomura may find the power to free himself from AFO.

I still think Hawks and BJ are the antagonists to the Todoroki plot. I mean they’re the two worst characters to be involved (BJ being a little bitch after Touya’s reveal and Hawks refusing to acknowledge that Enji sucks), but with them being outward and open about their involvement, in what way do you think they can pull off being the antagonists? They said they wanted to fight with them so they’re not gonna sneak around or anything...so I’m wondering how it could work.
Well, this is harsher than I’d be towards Hawks, but I also agree I don’t think any other role makes sense with what we have so far, unless Horikoshi is just... dropping the ball on Hawks.
See, I think what bother me in fandom is that people tend to either think Horikoshi is writing a masterpiece in which every shift in framing is utterly brilliant and done deliberately and he never indulges in not-so-great writing, or that he's a terrible, incompetent, and even offensive writer.
I truly don't think either of those are the case. I critique everything, even my beloved Dostoyevsky and Shakespeare (oh and I’m def subject to critique too), but I also don't think BNHA is reinventing the wheel or that it is terribly unique or revolutionary. I wouldn’t call it on the same level of literary impact as manga like Shingeki no Kyojin, but I would say it has a lot of value to analyze in and of itself too. I also don't think Horikoshi is a bad writer, which is why even with this bad writing this chapter I'm not overly concerned about the overall story trajectory. I think he knows how to tell a story and he has deep compassion that is evident in his characters and arcs. Some are willing to wait for a full story before criticizing; others are not, because serial fiction is supposed to satisfy and tantalize at the same time in each installment (which is almost impossible to do imo, but the strengths of serial fiction as a medium far outweigh the drawbacks).
I personally think that if this chapter attempts to show Hawks on a good trajectory, it’s bad writing objectively speaking (well, good/bad writing is always subjective, but it fits the broader literary consensus of what constitutes poor writing). You don’t redeem a character by having them face no consequences (guilt, even internal guilt, is a consequence!) and still improve. Hawks has no guilt. He’s supposedly inspired by Twice, inspiration that lingers even after Hawks literally stabbed him in the back. Sorry, that doesn’t make any sense in a story. If this is really what inspired Hawks to change, well damn then, why not let Dabi kill Enji or Shigaraki All Might? Let that inspire them to change, since murder can work, right? Unless the answer to Toga’s questions is supposed to be “actually villains are not people,” which I think we all agree is not the case.
Tumblr media
I’m with you and not quite buying Hawks’ seeming alignment with the Save Touya Squad. If it is supposed to be genuine, then I’m happy for fans while also thinking it’s cheap writing that offers nothing remotely interesting to the story. Stories need consequences (positive and negative) for characters to progress. We need to see how they progress from Point A to Point B.
It’s why I am not thrilled with Shouto's writing of late: much of it is told rather than shown. Give Shouto his own struggles instead of holding him up as a shining beacon of light to protect the Todofam and hero society from trauma he happens to share. Let Shouto feel his pain and excel in his strengths; that is what makes Shouto a compelling character for me, by far my favorite of the heroes. It seems like Shouto is constantly categorized as one or the other: a hero who saves his family, or a traumatized abuse survivor, black (red) and white, hot and cold, scarred and whole. Let him be both, please and thank you. While characters like Rei seem to acknowledge this, the story is not like... showing it in the framing. You’re telling me that he’s hurting, but we don’t get to see Rei convincing Shouto that Enji has to take responsibility and that Shouto doesn’t have to be the hero of the family alone. We’re just told this happened--offscreen.
Tumblr media
I’m often hit with “you want the villains to escape consequence!” when I say I want the villains to not go to prison at the end. However, this isn’t true. I have said I’m fine with a hospital setting (healing) and a chance to work with other troubled kids eventually (if safe, but story) to save them. And most important? I want Touya, Tenko, and Himiko to realize their murderous destruction and hedonism were wrong. I want them to realize the world shouldn’t be destroyed, and that true empathetic heroes can exist. I want the ending, be it working with kids or in a hospital or whatnot, to show that they have changed and no longer think it’s fine to kill to make a point (which is what Hawks’ story seems to be saying right now).
Hawks needs to learn that killing Twice was wrong, and he needs a consequence to learn that that was the case. If he’s just magically snapping his feathers and now on the path of empathy and saving Touya, that’s nonsensical writing. How did we go from this...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To Hawks saying he wants to be just like Twice? To Hawks partnering with the Todos to bring back a long-lost son who tried to kill Hawks? When as far as we know Hawks doesn’t seem to realize that Dabi’s flames got hotter and hotter because he really did care about Twice? Unless that happened too and we just... are supposed to realize it happened off screen?
Do we think Hawks’ mode of confronting his negative foil in Twice is the Way to Go? That Deku, Ochaco, and Shouto should copy that when it comes to Shigaraki, Toga, and Dabi? I sure don’t think so. I really hope not, at least. If Hawks is going to be inspired by Shouto to realize he screwed up by murdering Twice, then why is he already admiring Shouto while also still not really showing regret?
Is Shouto’s “he’s too close” humor, or a boundary thing symbolic of hero society controlling their family?
Then again, if Hawks is tricking the Todorokis, I still think that’s not excellently done because it’s not in-character. I would guess a conflict might arise later on to cause this trouble, but... again. Serial fiction and its inborn conundrums. This chapter just seems like bad writing. It doesn’t mean that Horikoshi’s a bad writer or that the story overall is poorly written. All stories have flaws, and overall, I really enjoy BNHA only behind BSD in terms of ongoing manga.
Then again, the moment I got hope for Jin he then went the way I’d initially predicted and died tragically, so maybe I should just trust that the larger arcs of the story will make sense even if the individual chapters stumble a bit. which does not inherently mean hawks will die just that consequences and framing should be like a thing

ah well my frustrations didn't translate well. It's just shigaraki's just one of the best written characters and he's like one of he characters who feels tangible. And deku in comparison well falls short, the narrative he had as a quirkless outcast was slated out and it maybe brought back but who knows. We're in the final stretch. Him saving shigaraki would feel hollow bcuz well if he couldn't even empathize with dabi who he actually does know about - the overburdening, abusive father, the weight of legacy, the indirect killing - well it's just raises doubts whether it would feel satisfactory when he does save shiggy. And well I'm more of the crowd that can actually see shigaraki saving deku because both tenko and shigaraki empathize with outcasts - I'm not against villains being saved but deku has never been like oh yeah maybe this society is screwed and I don't want villains losing their radical and legit criticism of the society and heroics.
Oh, OH! You’re the anon from before - so I got you partly right. I had the feeling you were more arguing because of the failings of Izuku rather than Shigaraki, so I absolute agree. Actually a lot of people (me included) would like to see a Quirkless Deku at the end of the manga, because indeed it would bring some sort of closure to the circle and because there would be no reason for the existence of OfA anymore (if AfO is gone) - so his character will definitely stay in the works until the last bit of the manga, which is why I get your criticism, especially if compared to Horikoshi’s most accomplished and best written character (Shigaraki).
I think your ‘society is screwed and I don’t want villains losing their radical and legit criticism’ is very much my point to. That’s the defect Deku has as a character since the beginning, and while I already talked about this in the previous answer it does feel half baked in its realisation (especially if we consider how poorly he related to Dabi even though he bared himself for everyone to see) but at the same time I think this stems from the fact that Horikoshi’s goal is to have only ONE hero parallel and empathise with only ONE villain. I say this because it might not make sense otherwise, but what HK is building is an exclusive relationship in which only that hero might relate and empathise with that villain, putting the base for Deku saving Shigaraki because only he can. You get what I am pointing at? It’s still a loophole, because usually if you relate to a victim, then you should not relate only to one in particular, but I guess that in this case, HK thought it would fail the purpose of having Shouto/Touya as narrative foils, same as Ochako/Toga. When Deku saves Shigaraki, because he will, it will feel satisfactory exactly because of the exclusive relation each of them has to the other, not because Izuku’s character is an accomplished one. But that’s my opinion, really. I am trying to put myself into the writer’s perspective and while I do see his failings, I am trying also to think through the steps that HK might have made while writing the plot line. This still does not negate the fact that Izuku’s obsession with heroes and the inexistent potential will to actually understand that what the villains are trying to do is exactly to rupture the status quo he is inadvertently both keeping in place and destroying is what makes his character sometimes a Mary Sue who has no narrative flavour. But I guess that in order to accomplish his mission he would have to get there at some point, it is (just as @/haleigh-sloth pointed out in this post) taking a damn lot of time.
However, let’s try to be positive and enjoy the narrative. We will get there. Or die trying. So let the odds be in our favour.

What if Deku can take/borrow quirks?
manga spoilers
I can already hear yall yelling at me right now. I know it sounds like a dumb theory again but it would make sense.
To explain things logically, we have to clarify: One For All is 8 quirks, not 7.
Each user added a quirk: Float (7th), Smokescreen (6th), Blackwip (5th), Danger sense (4th), Fa Jin (3rd), and an unknown one (2nd).
But it originally had 2 quirks. All for One forcibly gave the first user a stock piling quirk (which gives more strength)
Tumblr media
but the first user already had a quirk on his own: Quirk transfer, which is very similar to All for One's (of course they're brothers by blood). But if All for one can transfer quirks from another person to himself and to himself to another person, Yoichi (1st user) can only transfer quirks from himself to another person, but with consent in consideration!
Now. Every quirk get stronger the more you use them. For everyone. Bakugou's explosions become stronger and faster, Kirishima can get harder and harder, Toga could only copy people's appearance at first but now can copy their quirks too, Hagakure can now make things invisible, not only herself, etc etc. Everyone's quirks evolve very fast, just after a few years of using them. So of course One For All's quirks wouldn't be exceptions.
The stock pile quirk stocked so much a single punch can destroy an entire street, Blackwip is way more powerful than it was to the fifth user, I guess Deku can produce more smoke than the 6th, Danger sense must be way more "precised" than it was to the 4th, etc.
So... by that logic, the quirk transfer quirk (it's weird to say uh) should have evolved too.
So what if now deku could now not only transfer quirks from himself to another person but also from one person to himself? I didn't say "steal" in the title because I think that the condition of consent would still be applied. He wouldn't be able to take/borrow a quirk if the person doesn't want to give it to him. The other condition would be a DNA transfer (like All Might gave him a hair to eat) and not simply touching like All For One or shigaraki do.
Honestly, I don't even know myself if I want it to be true or not but it's a possibility. It would be cool to see him in action with more quirks. Just saying.

BNHA Chapter 307 Spoiler Thoughts: Vigilante Deku
The leaks are out, but this seems like a shorter chapter than what we’ve gotten in a while.  On one hand, that kinda sucks because less content for us.  On the other, I’m glad because I hope that means that Horikoshi is going easier on himself after working on the manga, 3rd movie, the anime, and the upcoming BNHA exposition over the past couple months.  I’m honestly shocked he hasn’t had a break since I think New Years.  At this point, I want him to give himself a break.  That would be better than have him grind for shorter chapters each week like the Joint Training Arc had when it first came out in Jump (that was torture good god...).  Anyway, not too much to say here, so I’m probably gonna keep it short too this week.  Again, I probably won’t be 100% correct until the official translations come out on Sunday:
The main 2 characters we see in this chapter are Yo Shindo (Vibration boy) and his GF, Tatami Nakagame (the girl with that weird Telescopic turtle Quirk) from the Provisional Lisence Exam Arc.  I hope y’all who voted for Shindo in the popularity poll (I still can’t believe that even happened) are happy he finally made a comeback in this chapter.  Only to get his ass kicked later in the chapter LOL.
But really, they are our “Heroes” in this chapter taking heat from the public.  Shindo and Nakagame are both officially in their 3rd year of high school, so that basically confirms that the new school year has officially begun.  This means that 3rd years like Mirio, Tamaki, and Nejire have officially graduated high school and are probably sidekicks to their respective mentors (we’re not sure where Mirio stands with this yet though)!  And our 1-A kids are now 2-A kids!  Strange that the last chapter showed them still living the 1-A dorms though, so I wonder when they’ll move to their new dorm rooms.  I also wonder if we’ll see the new 1st years.  If there are any...  Maybe I’m thinking too far into this...
Anyway, Shindo and Nakagame are leading some of the public to their school for shelter, but the citizens aren’t sure about Heroes anymore.  I don’t really blame them.  Heroes have protected people in the past, but their actions and inactions caused a lot of deaths and lost homes.  How can you keep faith in your heroes if they can’t give you 100% reassurance that things will be ok?
Oh, AND FREAKING MUSCULAR IS BACK!  And of course he’s out for blood!  Shindo tries to go up to stop him like a hero.  Though it is a noble effort, he gets absolutely destroyed by Muscular.  This kid was 🤏 close to dying.  Muscular is that freaking strong!
And I’ve heard word that some fans think that Shindo was attacked because he looks like an older Deku I TOTALLY BUY INTO THAT THEORY HAHA!  And we KNOW Muscular is targeting Deku in particular for revenge.  Given how Muscular’s intelligence was an E in the Ultra Analysis book (if I remember correctly), I’m not surprised he made this mistake.  NGL, I kinda feel bad for Shindo here.  Kinda.
And the final panel shows Deku in what is basically his vigilante costume AND HE LOOKS SO BADASS IM HERE FOR THIS SHIT!!!  His costume is all ripped up and ruffled AND HE’S FINALLY FULLY WEARING HIS BUNNY HOOD AND METAL MASK LIKE HE’S SUPPOSED TO HELL YEAH!!!  Those two pieces of his costume have just been hanging there for a majority of the series and we rarely ever see them in action, so I’m so glad to see them in use here.  Also, I noticed that Deku’s vigilante costume looks a lot like his beta costume from the early drafts of the series.  The menacing look to it especially brings this home.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Horikoshi took inspiration from his earlier ideas for this.  He’s done it before with Mt. Lady and Yui Kodai (1-B’s Size Girl) who were both early concepts for Ochaco Uraraka.
Finally, Deku being here confirms two things:
1. He’s still in Japan.  He is not in the States like some of us thought (myself included).  Ngl, I would’ve loved to see Deku in America doing American things, but it makes sense that he would stay in Japan since this is where the villains broke out of.  He needs to stay to protect his home.
2. We have not made a massive time-skip like some people thought.  If the war arc ended at the end of March, that means that we’re at lest 1-3 weeks ahead if the new school year has started.  I’m really glad we didn’t make a big jump in time.  We need to see what Deku’s up to as a vigilante right now.  We also need to know of what happened during this time.  Also, since he’s still in Japan, Deku shouldn’t be too hard to find.  At least for those closest to him.
Speaking of, WHERE ARE BAKUGO AND SHOTO???  Deku’s 2 closest friends are still nowhere to be found!  I want to see our boys!  I want to know what they’ll do.  I still have no doubt that they’ll go after Deku eventually, especially Bakugo and maybe Ochaco.  I think Shoto will join in the Deku search too honestly.  If Deku’s presence can drag the villains out, then maybe he can drag Dabi out?  Especially if Shigaraki decides to go after him.  Kill 2 birds with one stone sort of thing.  I just want to see Shoto again in general haha 💙!
And that’s pretty much it!  Again, shorter chapter so I hope Horikoshi is getting some rest for himself (Edit: Fan Scans are out and I counted 16 pages this week.  That’s like 1-2 pages shorter than usual, so it’s not that short.  Still hope Horikoshi gets some rest though).  Apparently we’re still getting a chapter next week though.  I hope our mangaka doesn’t burn himself out.  Though I’m soooooooo excited to see Deku’s vigilante adventures and I hope he absolutely folds Muscular in the next couple of chapters now that’s he’s stronger.  I need to see Vigilante Deku throw hands!  Please let me see that!

Hello! Do you think that one day, Deku's flaws will have consequences? You pointed out that Shigaraki always face consequences for them, so in your opinion, do you think the manga could lead to something more equal on this? I know he is the Hero and all, but wouldn't it undermind the whole thing if in the end he just ignores the society's problems by just pushing heroism as the miracle solution?
Tumblr media
Good question, anon. Let’s take a more serious look at Deku’s flaws. Deku so far has two main flaws.
Self-Harming - Deku has consistently valued himself less than others. His way of saving others almost always includes breaking his own body, and when you consider how low Deku’s self esteem is and how he was constantly told he would never be good enough to be a hero growing up this pattern of behavior borders on self-harming.
Hero Worship - Deku doesn’t question anything about hero society, which makes him incredibly naive and unaware of what’s going on in the world around him. Deku hasn’t done anything yet to seperate himself from being just another All Might Wannabe. Deku wants to save people, but doesn’t really even know what saving people means.
Deku doesn’t care if he gets hurt, and Deku doesn’t sympathize with villains, even ones who have sympathetic reasons for their actions, and this has led to Deku running off without thinking to try to fight Shigaraki to the death.
1. Self Harm
Tumblr media
So one possible interpretation of Deku’s habits of breaking his body when trying to save people is that he’s internalized the idea that without a quirk, he can’t become a hero. Everything that other people including bullies like Bakugo told him when he was younger, that he’s worthless because he was born quirkless, that he can’t become a hero, over and over again is still inside of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even what All Might tells him at first is a repettition of this idea. Deku can only be a hero if he’s strong. What’s most important to becoming a hero is strength, and having a strong quirk. Even though All Might eventually opens up the path for Deku being a hero, he only lets him after he proves his strength. Deku has to reach a certain power threshold before he’s even allowed to be at the starting lines.
Tumblr media
Every single character in class UA is hardworking, but Deku is especially characterized as being OBSESSED with training, and also being the one who pushes himself to such extremes that his body is constantly on the verge of breaking.
Tumblr media
Deku as a character is constantly told how worthless he is, because he wasn’t born with a quirk, because he’s borrowing someone else’s power, because he didn’t deserve to succeed All Might. Deku’s response to this has always been to try to prove his worth by pushing himself.
Tumblr media
Deku’s very unhealthy idea of what a hero is, also resembles what All Might told him in the first chapter. That heroes have to risk their lives in incredibly risky ways like this in order to walk the walk. Deku has always worshipped All Might’s way of always sacrificing himself without realizing what absolute havoc All Might wreaked on ihs body.
Deku’s habit of breaking himself has shown to have had some consequences so far. It made his mom cry. He was warned that he would do permanent damage to his left arm if he ever suffered a serious break like that again and would even eventually lose it. There’s also All Might’s early forced retirement which happened because he kept on going when everyone told him to stop, which is a possible future for Deku if he doesn’t seriously change his ways. However, there is no lasting consequence yet.
Another thing that’s important about Deku’s character is that he wants to be a hero so badly, and yet doesn’t really seem to know what kind of hero he wants to be.
Tumblr media
Deku so far has imitated All Might in a very empty way, without ever thinking that the heroes he loves so much might be flawed, or really understanding how many mistakes All Might made. His hero worship blinds him to the hero’s flaws, and when he’s confronted with All Might’s mistakes he’s often completely blindsided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All Might keeps secrets from him pretty regularly, and Deku just doesn’t question him because he’s just so busy in his hero worship. Due to that a lot of Deku’s progression as a character has stagnated. Even his idea of what a hero is, is extremely vague at best.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deku says he wants to be the greatest hero who saves everyone. Much like Mirio who wanted to be a hero who saved a million people. However, what does that mean? How is Deku going to surpass All Might. He hasn’t really thought about these things yet, or what kind of hero he’s going to be.
Because Deku can’t see the flaws in the hero system he can’t really be better than the previous generation of heroes.
2. Self Destruction
Tumblr media
Deku has a critical lack of self awareness. His goal is to save everyone, but he doesn’t really think of what that means. Aren’t villains in need of saving too? This relates back to the Dabi quote.
Who is it that really needs saving?
Tumblr media
Villains need to be stopped, but what creates those villains?
Deku’s sympathies always lie with the pro-heroes but he’s so wrapped up in hero worship he doesn’t really think about their actions. Remember, Deku’s last big fight against this was against Chisaki a child abuser to protect Eri, an abused child.
Tumblr media
Eri doesn’t just resemble Shigaraki. Eri is Shigaraki. They’re both children who were kidnapped by crimelords when they were young, told that they were monsters because of their quirks, and then experimented on. Shigaraki can’t consent to being experimented on because he was kidnapped since he was five and groomed all along with the intent that one day he would have this surgery performed on him so he could inherit AFO.
Tumblr media
Ujiko commits horrible grievous experimentation on Shigaraki, and then says he’s doing this all for Shigaraki’s sake, that he’s given him everything. He’s supposed to sound like an abusive parent here.
So this time rather than fighting to save Eri, Deku is fighting against Eri’s foil, but all grown up, with about zero self awareness. What allowed Deku to win in the fight against Chisaki was his ability to see the good in Eri, and fight against Chisaki’s insistence that she was a monster because she was born with a dangerous quirk. He humanized Eri.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, his response to Shigaraki is consistent dehumanization. Deku fought against Chisaki’s dehumanization of Eri, but is on the side of people who say things like this about Shigaraki.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s once again this blind loyalty and inability to question what we see is an extremely flawed system. Who is it in this situation that really needs saving? Endeavor? Gran Torino?
Tumblr media
Gran Torino is partially at fault for the creation of Shigaraki, because if he had stopped Nana Shimura from abandoning her son, or even checked up on Koutarou and Tenko just once this entire situation could have been avoided.
Tumblr media
It all goes back to Dabi’s question. Who is the one who needs saving here?
The biggest victims of the hero system, the ones most in need of saving are the villains, but Deku can’t see that, so he can’t really do anything to help them right now.
And yes. Deku should save Shigaraki. That’s the point of their foiling. They’re both Jungian Shadows of each other.
In Jungian psychology, the shadow, (also known as id, shadow aspect, or shadow archetype) is either an unconscious aspect of the personality that the conscious ego does not identify in itself; or the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious. In short, the shadow is the unknown side.
Shigaraki is Deku’s foil and opposite, but they’re also like... the exact same dude.
Tumblr media
The fact that Shigaraki started in the same place as Deku, that what he really needed was for someone to tell him that he could be a hero too, isn’t just there to be sad and tragic. It means that deep down, Shigaraki still wants someone to tell him he can be a hero, to show him another path other than being a villain, the same way All Might once told Deku he could be a hero.
The shadow is a part of yourself.  The shadow is who you are deep down inside. That’s why a shadow can’t be killed.  It’s the same thing as self destruction.
A shadow has to be reconciled. Part of self improvement is just learning to accept and look at the worst parts of yourselves in order to move on from them. You don’t get better by denying or remaining ignorant of the problem. Deku has consistently refused to even acknowledge Shigaraki.
Deku has said I can never understand you, we’re nothing alike, and yet we as the audience know they’re like the exact same guy. There’s no point in setting up such a parallel unless it’s going to be paid off in some way.
Tumblr media
Deku’s not trying to accept his shadow though, he’s fighting with everything he has to destroy his shadow, and that shouldn’t work.
Metaphorically.
It’s like Deku is trying to destroy himself. Which as I’ve said above Deku has a tendency to be self destructive. Star Wars doesn’t end with Luke killing Darth Vader, it ends with Luke reconciling with Anakin his father.
Tumblr media
Deku is warned several times in the last chapter not to charge straight ahead at Shigaraki, not to fight him on his own. We even see Bakugo in the flashback talk about how Deku doesn’t consider himself in the equation, or think about protecting himself at all which is why he destroys his own body so much.
Tumblr media
So, if even Bakugo is like Deku you’re going to get yourself killed, and every adult around him is yelling at Deku to run away because he might get himself killed, and Deku himself thinks.  I don’t care what happens to me I’m going to destroy Shigaraki no matter what. Then, there should be a conseqeunce here.
Tumblr media
Because this. This is self destruction. Deku’s trying to kill the guy that is... literally just him.
In other words if everybody if yelling Deku don’t do the thing. And then Deku just, does the thing anyway. There should be a consequence!  Deku’s goal isn’t to destroy Shigaraki, or to kill him to put a stop to him, it’s reconciliation with his jungian shadow. It should be to become the hero who saves everyone, by telling Shigaraki the words he wanted to hear for a long time that he can be a hero too. FInally passing on the words All Might gave him to someone else, and making up for the previous generation’s mistakes with Shigaraki.
So, not only is Deku attempting to do the wrong thing. He’s also fighting in the wrong way (by hurting himself again).
Which means, Deku probably shouldn’t win this fight. A good consequence would be Deku losing here, even with the last minute power up, and breaking his entire body trying to defeat Shigaraki.
Characters are most interesting when they fail, and Deku should fail here.

BNHA Act Parallels and Predictions
So it's pretty clear at this point that Horikoshi is really playing up the parallels in this final act of the manga from past chapters, which I think is really cool and interesting. Given the parallels we've already seen, it has me thinking about what parallels we're likely to see in the upcoming chapters. This is a prediction post for those parallels!
A couple of notes first:
I'm going to focus on parallels between the current Act 3, starting from Ch. 306 ("The Final Act Begins") and Act 1, which ended around Ch. 95 ("The End of the Beginning, the Beginning of the End"). For the sake of this post, though, I'm going to lump Ch. 96 and 97 in.
I'll start with the Act 3 prediction, then pair it with what I think it parallels. It'll appear as Act 3 prediction = Act 1 parallel. Anything in parenthesis are my additional thoughts on the parallel.
I'll start with parallels that have already happened, then continue with my predictions in no particular order. I'll update the post as I have more predictions or as predictions are revealed one way or another.
If a prediction comes true, I'll put it in bold letters. If it proves false, I'll cross it out. If a prediction is unfolding or happening in a similar but not exact way, I'll italicize it.
These predictions, in no way, say anything about how I personally feel about these events happening. Feel free to discuss the likelihood of them happening, but I don't consider this a discussion on whether or anything should happen.
Given the parallels, I also believe that the manga will wrap up somewhere around Ch. 400. That's not really important to this post, I just wanted to throw that in.
Alright, here we go!
Izuku leaves UA = Izuku enrolls in UA
"A giant villain" when we first see Vigilante!Izuku = "A giant villain" pre-hero!Izuku
Inko pushes back against Izuku leaving UA = Inko pushes back against Izuku returning to UA
All Might reaches for Izuku as he leaps away = Izuku reaches for All Might as he leaps away
Deku has an important fight at Kamino = All Might has an important fight at Kamino
AFO says "Now it's your turn" = All Might says "Now it's your turn"
AFO sends a projected message to Izuku = All Might sends a projected message to Izuku
After the 3rd Deku and Bakugo fight, OFA will be revealed to the world = Bakugo learned about OFA after the previous two fights
All Might arrives after the 3rd Deku and Bakugo fight = All Might arrived after the previous two fights
Dad for One Reveal = Shigaraki is Nana Shimura's grandson reveal
Izuku is captured by the LOV = Bakugo is captured by the LOV
Izuku is rescued by a small group of friends = Bakugo is rescued by a small group of friends. (As an extra note, I believe this will also parallel Yoichi's rescue by 2nd and 3rd, so I believe at least Bakugo and Kirishima will rescue Izuku from some sort of vault.)
Izuku loses OFA = Izuku gains OFA (I believe OFA will need to be destroyed in order to defeat AFO.)
Deku defeats AFO at a cost = All Might defeated AFO at a cost (This might be OFA itself, which could lead to Deku also saying, "Goodbye, One for All." It could also be at the cost of his arms since All Might also paid a physical toll.)
Uraraka and Izuku save each other = Izuku and Uraraka saved each other at the exam (Given that Izuku defeated a large robot to save her, I wonder if Gigantomachia will reappear.)
The final battle with LOV happens at UA = First battle with LOV happened at UA.
Important All Might and Izuku moment at the beach = All Might gives OFA to Izuku at the beach and devotes himself to teaching Izuku at the beach (I think this moment is likely to happen near the end of the entire manga.)
Iida punches Izuku for having a bad idea = Iida punched Izuku when he wanted to be reckless with saving Bakugo.
Heroics returns to its origins of community service = All Might had Izuku clean the beach since heroics used to be about community service
"Your admiration for All Might is a shackle" to reference Izuku's reckless behavior = Same quote from Gran Tarino to point out how Izuku is stuck with OFA
Stain saying Deku is worthy = Stain saying All Might is worthy
Todoroki and Izuku have a power combat moment = Todoroki and Izuku power moment at the Sports Festival
Izuku saves All Might with support from Bakugo = Izuku saved All Might with support from Bakugo (I actually imagine this could/will manifest in several ways as it's happened several times with the sludge villain, the Nomu, Kamino Ward, etc.)
"I couldn't just watch you die" to someone, maybe All Might = "I couldn't just watch you die" to Bakugo
Bakugo will show respect to Deku as a hero = Bakugo says Izuku can never be a hero/he didn't save him from the sludge villain
Deku "I must remember my origin" = All Might "I must remember my origin"
Feel free to add your predictions, too, and I'll update the list accordingly!

BNHA Common Misconceptions
I’ve been seeing wayyy too much bs on my dash lately. So I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on some Controversy™
***Spoilers For The Manga***
1. “What the HPSC did to Hawks wasn’t bad”
A government organization putting a young child through rigorous training so that he can be used as a tool is bad. I don’t know why I have to spell that out
Hawks had to abandon his real name at a very young age. That’s damaging for a kid’s sense of identity. His identity as a person no longer has any separation from his work as a hero. Being a hero is all he is now. I wouldn’t be surprised if (provided Hawks’s wings are gone for good) he has an identity crisis after this arc because he can’t be “Hawks” anymore.
Hawks is based on Lionel Messi, a soccer player recruited at a young age in return for paying for his medical procedures. I’ve seen people say that Hawks chose to be a hero. One, he was a child, young children shouldn’t be making decisions like that. Two, we know based on context clues that Keigo was more than likely living in poverty, possibly with alcoholic parents, and we literally are told that the HPSC payed for his family’s living expenses. Do you really think Keigo had much of a choice here?
I’ve seen people say “it’s just like what UA is doing”. First of all, UA is called out for being irresponsible and endangering their students IN UNIVERSE. Second, Keigo was a young child, the UA kids are 15+. There’s a huge difference.
2. “Mitsuki isn’t abusive”
Honestly when it comes to her smacking Katsuki, I could excuse it as a joke done in poor taste and not hold it over her as a character.
Hitting him WASNT just discipline tho. You should never, ever, under any circumstances hit your kid. Fuck that noise.
What I really have an issue with is what she SAYS to Katsuki. Her guilt tripping him isn’t a throwaway line either. He repeats the sentiment that he is responsible for Kamino during Deku v Kacchan 2. It’s one of the main reasons he fights Deku.
Horikoshi says that Katsuki has a good relationship with his mother. In that case, he did a horrible job at presenting that. What is written in the canon is what should be used as the basis for how we interpret her character.
3. “Shigaraki chose to kill his family/was born evil”
No...just...no. He was FIVE for crying out loud.
He wanted to be a hero, and took extra care to play with kids that had no friends. He definitely wasn’t born evil lmao.
His quirk manifested while he was having an emotional crisis. Decay is controlled by emotion so of course it went haywire.
He didn’t even know it was him doing it at first.
“But Shigaraki said he WANTED it to happen” Shigaraki is an unreliable narrator. What we actually SEE tells a very different story. He reaches out to Hana and his Mother for help. His grandparents are just caught in the shockwave. The ONLY person he killed on purpose was his father.
Now when it comes to his father, he had just beat him and locked him outside. He’s FIVE, and he has no healthy outlet for his anger and frustration. Hell, we see that in his “itchiness”, he only feels like this in the house, because his father makes him suppress his love for heroes and his dream to become one. He takes joy in killing his father because it’s the only release he’s ever experienced.
The fact that you guys forget that this is an abused child with no real control over his quirk that just got beaten and locked outside... Nope, no reading comprehension here.
4. “The League of Villains are justified/are a revolutionary group”
...Shigaraki has stated over and over again that he just wants to destroy everything. He doesn’t care about reform or improving anything. That one panel in Ch. 222, where he says he wants to destroy everything I think sums it up perfectly.
Tumblr media
He wants to destroy EVERYTHING good or bad or neither or both. There’s a newborn baby, a field of flowers , Nine, various heroes, the UA kids, etc all varying in innocence.
The rest of the league have very different goals and reasons why they continue to support Shigaraki. Twice wants to protect the only people that accepted him. Spinner just wants to have purpose for his life. Toga wants to live the way she wishes with no consequences. Compress is also here.
The only “revolutionary” is Dabi. But his views are not universal throughout the league.
Even if they were trying to improve things. They have killed countless innocent people, they’ve tried to kill the UA kids too. That’s not ok. And it’s not erased by the fact that they’ve done good. (I do appreciate them for killing the MHA version of the KKK, truly epic of you)
5. “Hawks is abusive”
It’s not abuse to manipulate someone for info when you’re a double agent. It’s kinda shitty, and you could argue that it was unnecessary for Hawks to do so in context. But it’s not abuse.
Y’all need to stop using the word abuse/abusive tendencies to describe all immoral actions
I’ve also seen people say that Hawks has abusive tendencies (as in he’s abusive in all his relationships with other characters) and...do I really need to explain why that makes no sense at all?
6. “Twice deserved to die/it was necessary to kill him”
Feel like I need to remind people that we’ve only ever actually seen Twice kill one guy and that was one of the KKK guys.
Twice isn’t evil, even Hawks admits that he is a genuinely good person. Good people don’t deserve to die.
It wasn’t necessary, and here’s why: Hawks could’ve just knocked him out or even just severely injured him. (Or the HPSC could’ve just grown a brain cell and sent more people to back him up, making it easier to hold back his quirk and arrest him)
Hawks shouldn’t have killed Twice, he only killed him because he’s been raised as a child soldier and I wouldn’t be surprised if what he told Twice about taking out villains was a direct quote from the HPSC
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Also, Hawks would’ve killed Twice with or without Dabi’s intervention
Something I do have to say though is that Hawks was right not to just let Twice go. It’s tragic because Twice WAS leaving to help his friends, but the other side of that tragedy it that his friends are terrorists. If he was allowed to leave a shit ton of people would have died (again that doesn’t mean he deserved to die either, don’t get it twisted)
The WHOLE POINT of Hawks v Twice is to make you question who the bad guy is. Both characters are morally gray and the only reason they even have to fight is because of the outside forces controlling their fates. It’s supposed to be tragic it’s supposed to be unclear who is in the right, so stop arguing about it.
7. “Bakugou is abusive/irredeemable” (I know it’s been talked to death but I still see it everywhere)
People are, in fact, allowed to grow past the person they were in middle school.
Most people get hung up on the “throw yourself off a building” line. Which is fair, but again, he was in middle school.
People also say “he hasn’t apologized yet”. Yeah? And? The story isn’t over yet. Horikoshi has already acknowledged that too. I don’t know what you want? People who like him know that his arc isn’t over yet.
I’ve seen a lot of people denying his character development. In the beginning of the series he was a bully and let his ego control him. I don’t think he’s bullied...anyone since Deku v Kacchan 2. He insults people but they obviously don’t take it seriously.
He’s also gone from preferring to fail a final exam to avoid working with Deku, to following him into battle against Shigaraki.
Also, when he actually likes and respects someone he doesn’t mistreat them. This is the same thing with Hawks where y’all NEED to stop misusing the word abuse. He was an abusive friend to Deku when they were kids, that’s it.
8. “Rei was abusive too!”
I’m BEGGING YOU to learn what the term “abuse” means istg
She had a psychotic break. She genuinely thought it was her abusive husband coming through the door, and she acted out of fear.
“Well that’s not an excuse” yes it fucking is. Not to mention that as soon as she realized what happened, she sobs hysterically because she hurt Shouto and tries to use her quirk to help him.
I genuinely don’t understand why people think this
9. “Dabi actually does care about the league”
Listen, I know it sounds harsh, but y’all need to get your heads out of your piles of headcanons.
We know next to nothing about how Dabi feels about just about anything. But we do see that he’s aloof and distant with the league, he doesn’t put in more than he needs to. The rest of the league think of each other as family. Dabi straight up says he doesn’t give a shit about them.
“What if he was just putting up a front for Hawks” Why? Why would he do that? When asked who he was he answered him. He tells him how he feels about hero society and Stain. Not to mention that he was getting ready to kill him. If he was hiding his true feelings about the league I doubt he would’ve so easily said that he didn’t care about them but rather how useful they were.
At this point it’s just wishful thinking. Based on everything we’ve seen in the series so far and everything we know about Dabi, I think it’s safe to say that he doesn’t care about them all that much. If he secretly does care about them, I’d say it’s likely that he doesn’t even know he does.
Idk why all of a sudden villain stans and hero stans are feuding over things that shouldn’t even be up for debate in the first place. Sorry if this came off as super aggressive, I’m just sick of seeing this stuff all over the place. If anyone has anything to add go ahead

I'm terrified about Shigaraki getting the Madara/Kaguya ending. Yk he dying because it's the final boss's turn to shine
I don't think that's the case, anon.
If anything, AFO is the one who's gonna die or get defeated in the end and Shigaraki is going to have a second chance or he's going to get redeemed through some other way, but not death.
First of all, because Naruto and Boku No Hero Academia have very different themes, even when bnha has Naruto inspiration.
Naruto is set on a world in constant war. It shows because the manga is way more cruel than bnha, more explicit, more extensive. Naruto has a wider focus. The story show us an entire world with different nations and the different levels of relationships in such world.
Boku No Hero Academia has its focus on one country, on an specific period of time, and it's theme is more focused on the problems of violence generated by a lack of communication. Its story is more innocent, more light-hearted, and it's based on the interactions within one society.
If you compare the number of deaths in Naruto with the number of deaths in bnha, it's easy to see what I mean. Also you can compare the number of tragic backstories, the number of over specific backstories, the many intricate rituals of the ninja world with the more relaxed form of the hero world, etc.
Shigaraki Tomura has the more detailed backstory in the bnha narrative, followed by the Todorokis. We know his grandparents, parents, sister, childhood, the figures that surrounded him in his teen years, hobbies, ideals, and we have seen his evolution from up close.
His arc is specifically well written, with consistent themes like death, sorrow, lose of identity, being demonized, etc. The symbolism around him are also well used, the color schemes, the recurrent poses and graphic images like the moth motive, etc. You can track the changes in his character and speech and it'll prove continuous, even.
It means there has been a great effort from Horikoshi when it comes to creating and evolving Shigaraki Tomura. Even now, in the final chapters of the manga, Horikoshi has dedicated a chapter to the villains, making the big meeting of Stars and Stripes and Shigaraki the focus of the chapter.
With that in mind, and how tied is Shigaraki to the whole thread (he has close connections to heroes and villains and civilians equally), I think is highly improbable for Horikoshi to kill Shigaraki Tomura. There are far more reasons and far more clues pointing out at a sort of redemption.
Shigaraki Tomura shares with Deku the whole "persevering and winning in the end" narrative. Since Tomura was introduced, we've been told he is growing still and he's gonna win in the end. But winning is something subjective, and breaking free from AFO and finally winning a life for himself can be the final reward for his persistent actions.
Besides, only the greatest heroes can save and not kill the greatest villains. In this case, Tomura is far closer to the figure of Sasuke, who Naruto insist in saving even when the rest tells him is not going to work, than to the figure of some villain. For Deku, Tomura is the kid he's failed to save, but he plans to change that. And in the narrative there is well present the idea of Tomura wanting for someone to truly believe in him as a hero, for someone to reach for his hand.
There are also more similarities between Naruto and Sasuke and Izuku and Tomura.
For example, the same way Sasuke and Naruto were taken in the end as two parts of a same thing, and therefore bringing balance together, Tomura and Deku symbolize death and life and are the two parts of a cycle, counterparts that complete each other.
While Tomura wants to sacrifice the world to avoid sacrificing himself, Deku tries to sacrifice himself to save the world. Both their determinations are wrong, for there's no need to destroy one thing or the other. They need to learn together how to take care on themselves while taking care of others.
So, in order for them to survive the final battle, they'd need to fight together, just like Sasuke and Naruto when facing the whole Kaguya thing. They're going to rebuild (not literally, but more like symbolic) the hero society to make it a better place for everyone: people with or without quirks, mutants, victims, civilians, etc.
So anon, if while comparing Naruto to bnha you feel anxious or worried about what's going to happen in the end with Shigaraki, take all the things I've just pointed out and examine them closer.
I could be wrong, of course. But the same way I could be wrong, I could be right, and you should find enough comfort in that.

Why I Believe Deku Fails as a Character (Part 2 of 3)
SPOILERS FOR THE MHA MANGA (OFA reveal, last completed arc, Chapter 307)
...
Not only were we robbed of a compelling character with a mental illness — which we so desperately need in the media — but we were also robbed of anything about Deku that could make him an interesting character in other ways.
Now, a compelling character should have a quirk (not a Quirk) that separates them from the rest of the characters (because who likes when all the characters all act the same?) and makes them more relatable. Everybody’s got something about themselves that sets them apart from their friends and families. It could be a dialogue quirk — common examples would be someone who references movies constantly or never uses contractions — or just a habit they have that nobody else has. In Deku’s case, it’s his muttering and his hero analysis notebooks.
However, one of the first rules of good writing that a writer will be taught is the phrase “show don’t tell.” And it’s good advice, for the most part. (Some things are better left told, but that rant isn’t relevant to this one, so I’ll hold back on that.)
Tumblr media
For Deku, his mumbling is never really shown to us. Yes, it’s shown through the word “mutter” that appears on screen whenever he’s muttering, but that’s actually telling. We don’t ever get to decide for ourselves that Deku mutters a lot. No, the show decides for us, telling us to believe he mutters often and talks too much by the way it always accompanies his muttering with the word “mutter” surrounding him on screen or in the manga panel. He certainly does talk a lot, but it’s ruined by the fact that the anime/manga constantly needs to tell us that he talks a lot.
The reason why showing rather than telling is so important is because the audience needs to be able to figure out aspects of the plot or characters on their own. If they’re simply told everything, they aren’t going to believe it. If the author tells you that Person A hates Person B, but A never shows any animosity towards B through their dialogue or actions, the audience won’t believe it.  (Think of the tip from Billy Wilder, which tells screenwriters to make the audience add up two plus two— don’t give them four. Give them two plus two, let them do the math themselves, and they’ll love you forever.)
This is mostly a nitpick, yes. Still, it’s a blatant example of when showing (and not telling) is necessary. In this case, the telling ruins it, and by telling, it negates the unique aspect of Deku’s characterization that would’ve helped make him a more realistic — and therefore more relatable — character.
Which brings me to another point: what about his hero analysis notebooks?
I mean, hell, he’s got thirteen of those things. By now, he should be able to look at a villain’s Quirk and, in the matter of a minute or two, come up with a plan to take that villain down.
Those notebooks could’ve made Deku such a unique character— with thirteen notebooks worth of analyzing already in his repertoire, he should be able to analyze Quirks like there’s no tomorrow. And people, too. Wouldn’t it have been so interesting to see Deku be able to just look at someone and know what they’re planning, thinking, or feeling?
(As a questionably relevant side note, there are accounts of people who have experienced traumatic things such as abusive households who have told stories of how they can look at people and instantly know what they’re thinking. It’s a defense mechanism to prevent themselves from provoking someone, because they knew if they accidentally provoked their past abuser, they would face the consequences. See? It could all tie together.)
And if that seems like it could make Deku overpowered, it really doesn’t have to. There isn’t a single overpowered power you can give to a character that will, without fail, make them overpowered. At least, not at first. We just need a character to earn their overpowered-ness, because we love a character who earns their strength over time. You just have to give the power drawbacks in whichever way makes sense and actually impacts the character.
Deku with All For One’s Quirk, one of the most overpowered Quirks in the anime/manga to date? Using multiple Quirks at the same time makes him pass out from exhaustion. Using too many at once could give him permanent brain damage like what you see with the Nomu. Having a villainous Quirk like AFO makes his bullying even worse as a child, leading to permanent self-esteem issues that keep him from ever wanting to use his Quirk to begin with. (Last one courtesy of Shinsou’s backstory!)
Tumblr media
Deku with seven Quirks courtesy of One For All, the other most overpowered Quirk in the anime/manga? Same thing as the first two examples in the paragraph above. Or the burden of having to carry out the wills of the eight users that preceded him, all of whom have differing opinions on Deku’s best course of action for any given battle. The previous users never had to so readily accept him as their successor. Why not have them reject Deku for deeming him too soft to do what’s best, or any other reason?
Deku with Overhaul’s Quirk? Uh-oh, looks like he accidentally killed a classmate the first time he used it, and now he’s forever afraid of it. But, uh-oh, if he wants to be a hero, he has to use it. Or what if the Quirk only works on organic matter, meaning it’ll only work on people or plants? That would kinda suck.
See? No power is automatically overpowered unless you make it that way.
Maybe Deku can analyze anything if given enough time, but he can’t exactly sneak off in the middle of a fight to come up with the best strategy. This could be quite reasonable, considering Deku would have been able to think long and hard before writing anything down in his hero notebooks. And all his training could culminate in the main climax of the series, where Deku creates and executes the perfect plan in a matter of seconds thanks to his analyzing skills.
Or what about All For One, the big bad of the series? (You can argue it’s Shigaraki too, but in the recent chapters, it’s made obvious that AFO is actually controlling him. Therefore, AFO’s the guy Deku should ultimately be putting a stop to. He is essentially Deku’s fated enemy in terms of Quirk backstory, after all.)
What if AFO turned out to be the one person Deku couldn’t analyze, couldn’t read at all, because his face is so disfigured that it’s impossible to tell what emotions he’s experiencing through facial expressions? What if AFO was such a masterful manipulator that Deku couldn’t read the tone of his voice because AFO purposefully kept it unchanging?
The extreme fear that Deku could experience just by being unable to tell what AFO was thinking could make AFO into such an intimidating villain. He’d be the one villain that Deku just might not be able to best, and the audience would fear for him, like they’re supposed to do.
Tumblr media
And, at least for me, I haven’t been fearing much for Deku. As of Chapter 307, it looks like he’ll be fighting Muscular again. But where exactly are the stakes of this fight? Sure, it’s a good way of showing how far Deku has leveled up after the time skip, but we already know he’s going to win. I mean, he beat the guy in season 3. He better win, or what the hell, right? It would’ve been much more impactful to have him lose against Muscular the first time and come back again in Chapter 307 to kick his ass.
It’s just... Deku always seems to win. His first major loss that comes to mind is his fight with Todoroki, but the loss only proved how good of a person Deku was. His second fight against Bakugou couldn’t even be considered training— Deku had nothing to lose. And what about Deku’s arms? Again, as of Chapter 307, it looks like he can still use them perfectly fine despite absolutely destroying them in his fight against Shiggy. What was it that doctor said? If he keeps abusing them the way he has, he’ll paralyze himself? Sure, he said two or three more times, but Deku was abusing the hell out of them again and again just to make Shiggy take any damage with his regeneration Quirk. Doesn’t seem like his arms are even slightly stiff at the moment. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.
Tumblr media
I don’t know. It just seems like nothing goes wrong for Deku unless it doesn’t have any truly negative effect on him. His fight against Shigaraki is an exception, I suppose, but it was also the fault of every other hero who failed to stop Shigaraki from freeing AFO and the villains from all of those prisons. Whenever it’s just Deku, it seems like he never really loses when it would actually mean something if he did.
This is another flaw of Deku’s characterization, but it ties into my second point about Deku’s analyzing skills, too.
Creating a foil for Deku in AFO by making AFO unreadable would help give the conflict some oomph, if you know what I mean. Because, currently, AFO is really only Deku’s foil because of his Quirk and because he wants to take OFA. If Deku was portrayed as a master analyzer...
Think about it— All For One, the master manipulator with AFO, up against Izuku Midoriya, the master analyzer with OFA.
This is the fancy-schmancy dichotomy that we could’ve gotten. The heightened tension that would’ve made Deku’s story so much more interesting to read/watch, that would’ve made me wait for each new chapter on the edge of my seat.
But, once again, Deku’s potential to be an interesting character is wasted.
Horikoshi could have made him interesting with his muttering if he hadn’t shoved it down the audience’s throat.
And while he had set up for Deku to be a master strategist, he didn’t follow through, making Deku seem pretty stupid for having so much experience in analyzing and yet having so little to show for it. Because Horikoshi does try to show it, but only when it doesn’t matter, like when Deku analyzes the fights for the sports festival up in the stands. Why not have him do it when it matters, like when he fights against villains at the USJ or when he fights Shigaraki in the more recent chapters?
Not to mention the fact that he missed a fantastic opportunity to make All For One more of a villain. (Because All For One is kind of a sucky villain at the moment, considering it just seems like he’s a villain because he wants to be. Sure, there’s a little snippet of why AFO does what he does, but it’s subpar at best.)
Honestly, I just wish Horikoshi had done a better job with Deku like he did with Bakugou. But he didn’t, unfortunately, and that’s what makes Deku fall so flat.

Thoughts on the New OP
Never have I been so disappointed to get exactly what I wanted...
OK so as many have pointed out, Bones is clearly not prioritizing the MVA arc in the OPs or the marketing of season 5. For some reason it feels like a minor B plot instead of the actual main plot it was for 21 chapters.
So we start with Class 1-A:
Tumblr media
The Trinity and OchaTsu being the last 5 to appear is not bad. Also I’m just realizing that the only two characters who have permanently changed their costumes as of 318 (not just winter changes) to match this arc are Bakugou and Ochako. Of course the two who have the coolest costumes in the bunch are the only ones who changed em.
Now we get some long, moody shots of the Big OT3 in wreckage. Wreckage of hero society maybe?
Tumblr media
“hey brother listen” subtle for the shot of Shoto being here, Bones. Not foreshadowing anything at all there. All they needed was to cut to Dabi right away and this would’ve been a walking spoiler.
Tumblr media
More Origin Trio. At this point this feels kinda gratuitous. Like, proportionately, the Internship arc here is less than ten chapters, to the MVA arc’s 20+, but the MVA arc takes up like 5% of the OP, the internship stuff like 90%. We BARELY see the League at all, you could blink and miss them:
Tumblr media
Like boom. This (which is just ripped from the Volume 24 cover anyway) is all. A few disconnected shots of individual members later, and that’s it. I was expecting an all out League only opening for this arc! Dissolving the title like Chapter 220, each individual villain getting their own moment, a chance to really play with some Dabi foreshadowing and maybe some cool Toga/Ocha parallels? But nope, nothing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, I love KiriMina and OchaTSuyu, but they have like two pages of footage in this arc. WHY does every member of Class A get more footage in this OP than the League do?!
Tumblr media
Like, Toga and Shigaraki in a few disconnected shots that summarize nothing are not enough! This was the League’s arc, top to bottom, and now not only have they been postponed, but demoted to extras in their own OP!
Tumblr media
More gratuitous OT3 shots.
Tumblr media
OK this shot is pretty good. Endeav replacing All Might. I’m sure Endeav Antis love that.
Tumblr media
Deku meets impressionism apparently.
So I’m of two minds about this OP. On the one hand, I do love the trinity, the Winter Internship arc is maybe my third/fourth fave in the entire series (Camino, Sports Fest, and possibly PLF via for the top), and only last week I was whining really loudly about Class 1-A’s lack of screentime in the manga and being really grateful to bones for spoiling us with them. Maybe since the manga has finally decided to put out I’ve been mollified, lol.
But on the other hand, I also love the League, and the MVA arc. That storyline was one of the best put together and most unique in all of MHA. The entire idea behind it - shown so eloquently with Shigaraki destroying the logo in 220 - was to jump into the point of view of the  villains, leaving behind the heroes. The idea was to humanize the villains, explore their motivations and what made them the way they are. This was important, because one of the main thrusts of the PLF arc -the thing that we reached at the climax, the key to the Toga vs Ochako, Dabi backstory ,and Deku realizations - was the idea that the villains were tragically created by the flaws in the hero society that made them, and that some of them maybe worth saving. And we achieved that by letting hte audience jump into their point of view.
The MVA arc framed the villains as protagonists. It let us, the audience, genuinely come to care about them. They were the heroes for the better part of 2019. And that was important. Yes, Bones will still adapt the same material, but look at how they’re framing it in this OP. Rather than giving us the villains as our protagonists, they’re delivering them the exact same way they did in every OP before this: A quick shot or two of the group, framed to make them look sinister, and maybe a few extra shots of Shigaraki walking around (like Odd Future). That’s it. Nothing to put us into their heads.
So combine this OP with both the pacing of this season (taking the joint training arc slowly and leapfrogging over the arc entirely) and the marketing (ignoring the villains almost completely) and it’s clear that Bones does not consider the MVA arc a priority at all. They just don’t seem interested in adapting it. It’s clear that they much prefer TDBKDK at the Internship. Hell, they’re making an entire movie around that. Big clue.
And I don’t know how to feel about that. Again, I love the trinity. I love their little arc together. The most popular post I ever made was about Chapter 249. I’m excited for their movie. But...I don’t think that Bones should compromise the storytelling to indulge in that. We need the MVA arc. For manga fans, even though 295 was a bit of a mess, the line from Deku about saving Shigaraki - chapter 300′s realization from Shoto about saving his brother - 289′s bit where Ochako sees Toga crying - really hit hard, because of the MVA arc. But how’s that gonna play in the anime if Bones turns this arc into an after thought?
I guess I’ll have to wait and see how Bones actually adapts the arc. I mean, they’ve still got 11 episodes left this season. They could pull it off really well. But man, I’m starting to have some doubts.

*BNHA MANGA CHAPTER 293 SPOILERS*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anybody else think about this scene in the recent chapter where Mirio asks for help?
Now, do you ever think about how he's supposed to be a parallel to Midoriya, and also a source of self doubt to our main character? Mirio was originally going to inherit One for All, so everytime Lemillion "outdoes" Midoriya, in his mind, he feels like he doesnt deserve One for All.
And yet, here we have Mirio showing up and immediately admitting to his own limitations and asking for help. Looking back at Midoriya, we've seen him again and again act like he shouldnt need help, that hes weak for needing it, even a burden on the people who help and support him. Midoriya follows too closely in All Mights footsteps and believes he needs to carry the weight of the world solely on his own shoulders, and if he cant, he is undeserving of One for All.
Mirio, growing up, was in a similar predicament to Midoriya, where he felt powerless, yet he still wanted to become a hero. Much of the world was against him, like Midoriya as well, but unlike Midoriya, he DID have support - his parents, his friend. Midoriya, well, not a single person believed in him. Even his mother couldnt support his dreams - i mean, obviously, understandably. Theres a huge difference between having a difficult quirk and no quirk at all. But that difference is what led to the difference in how the world treated them both. And it turns out, when you have absolutely no support, not a single person in your corner, you end up growing up to have no self worth!
You see, Mirio, rather than taking extreme blows and suffering grievous injuries, asked for help! In fact, he asked for help from people that were super beaten up and on death's door! During his fight with Shigaraki, Midoriya separated himself from the others and insisted it stayed between them two, and he destroyed his limbs in the process. Midoriya has shown to not care about his own preservation when trying to save others; particularly with some of the recent chapters in mind (Bakugou Katsuki Rising) it makes you wonder if he even cares about himself at all.
I often think about during the sports festival arc, during his talk with Todoroki, how he said he was lucky to have had help from people, support that got him this far, but....that support was a recent development!! The first person to ever support him was All Might at age 14. He only started learning what a support system looked like at age 15, almost 16. He is so unaware of his own worth, what he deserves personally, what he deserves from other people. Hes so, disbelievingly grateful for even a drop of support, he thinks he owes his life and success to anyone that helps him. Its like he feels indebted.
When you develop relationships with people, within a community, it is important to learn that help goes both ways, that asking for help does not make you a burden, it actually strengthens your ties to those around you. Everybody helps each other in the ways that they can, because no one can do it all alone, and it is our responsibility as human beings to help each other. Mirio, raised in a very healthy way with support, hes a social butterfly! And he finds it easy, and necessary, to ask for help, even from those who are "weaker" than him. Midoriya, raised with no support in any aspect of his life, ended up very isolated in his formative years. He doesnt know how to ask for help, doesnt know that he should ask for help, doesnt know that hes allowed to ask for help.
I guess what im saying is, that if by the end of this story, Horikoshi basically says Deku just needs to get stronger until he is the able to handle any and everything, and not that he needs to work through the trauma of his past, to learn self worth and how to connect with others, how to trust them to help him and not expect anything in return, that he deserves help as much as he wants to help others, then i might just rip my own hair out.

Naaat I need someone to cry to about the new MHA ED. It's just the shot of Dabi smirking after singling him out from the rest of the league, like I know just looking at it without the music it's just Dabi being a cocky bastard but paired with the mellow song it just feels so sad not because of his expression per se but because it hints at a dark backstory (I mean we know already for anyone who read the manga or even just heard any theories about bnha ever). The shot also reminds me of his line "more than anyone, you should've been keeping both eyes on me" and that just makes me vibrate in hype. I just love how his whole run up to his grand reveal is handled, I love how it's teased in the manga and how masterfully Horikoshi crafts his expressions and even though some of that is lost in the anime they still manage to create great moments to build up his character too. It's like even after we've experienced it in the manga, the build up in the anime is making me excited for it all over again as if we still didn't know anything except for our theories with no concrete information. I absolutely adore Shigaraki and his storyline in the main story with Deku but I also adore how the Todoroki storyline is more or less just another half of the main storyline now rather than just side story, since it is just as important after all. I also love all the shots with Hawks, I love the mirroring with Endeavor and I also really love the shot of Hawks and Deku looking at each other and the final shot of TodoBakuDeku with Hawk's feathers around, like I know we're actually exploring this in the manga currently but Hawks has a lot of responsibility on his hands not just to be a hero and act as a spy in the league but he's also one of the only people who understands the burden that is on Deku which means he has extra responsibility as a pro hero to protect Deku from the same hardships he faced while he was growing up with that same pressure put on him by the commission. I feel like I already understood this but the new ED sequence really like sent that thought home u kno? Mayhaps I am finished raving on and on for now, i'm just so hyped like I know the anime isn't a perfect PERFECT adaption and people find something to complain about every week but i'm honestly just so grateful that i'm getting to experience all these things all over again and it feels like the first time since it's adapted to a different medium and i'm getting so hyped for the build up all over again and emotions are destroying me all over again so I am honestly so happy with the anime so far
god anon you sent me this ages ago and i just didnt respond but i was v excited to see all of your gushing in my inbox!!! ;w; i'm kind of sad about the rearranging of the arcs but that's just because i want to see The League sooner fgnkbfjgnbjk!!!
