Repostober 14 - Extra Life 2019

The big ridiculous scene that came out of fundraising for Extra Life, which I do along with my office every year. Mostly its peoples' DnD characters (including a few of mine) and a bunch of little sillier additions. This was the second, and final, of these huge scenes lol. I would make a big background and just leave a lot of space for placing characters, which people could pay to slot into. I would start drawing them on our annual stream, but it was obviously too big to finish in a couple-hour time slot, so the work would extend well into December, which was much less fun. Unfortunately none of my other art-related fundraising ideas have been as successful as this, but I just don't have it in me to do it again.

The moon is actually an egg a dragon is busting out of! That was the whole prompt, more or less.

very tiny, waaay in the back and added at the end without a donation: the crew for when I was DMing Curse of Strahd. I posted about them a few days ago and they're basically too tiny to make out here haha.

res voice (singing and normal, but si makes an effort to hide it more when just talking) is like in splatoon 👍 basically like if callie had an octoling accent. their main job is being a lookout but they could probably be talked into doing literally any other thing with very little effort lol

And then my 3rd character for a campaign I made was a human college of swords bard

My fav character I made tho (as a guest character) is a water genasi wild magic sorc :))) wild magic is SO MUCH FUN also i just love water vibes sooo rahhhs

I love all my characters tho

(Tho only the cleric campaign ever finished 😭😭 the other two got demolished from covid big rip, one day I'll get back into dnd... one day)

ooooo a water genasi with wild magic sounds SO fun. I don't know the details of wild magic mechanics that well but from the little I do know it sounds like that would be a lot of fun

ok well. the discord rp thing I was a part of was technically a fandom thing but the people running it very quickly took the plot in their own direction and by the end it was pretty unrecognizable what media it was originally inspired by. but um that's just a disclaimer in case anyone recognizes the format. pls don't snitch. anyway I'm gonna ramble about it under the cut so it will be long I am sorry

anyway! the gist of the game was that all our characters were thrown into a discord server and told we had to participate in trials run by a godlike beings (entities) who liked tormenting people for entertainment and all that jazz. we would have to submit videos of us completing tasks given to us in order to stay alive, and later on could also participate in puzzle games in giant vc calls if we wanted to basically just get extra kudos with the entities.

the rp was mostly done through in character texting, but again we could also film videos for tasks, and could participate in ic vcs. the rp itself was improv, but there was a team of admins who played the entities running the game, while also having characters of their own that participated in the trials as well. these characters had their own larger plot going on, but along with that the admins would work with individual player characters and give each of us our own plotline that connected to the larger story. so actually very similar to how the qsmp works right now, and somewhat similar to how dsmp worked

also fun fact, we had a 3 lives system! and this was july 2020, so, like, we did it before dsmp lol.

every participant was assigned a number, and was only allowed to be referred to by that number in the in game discord server. so while most of our characters technically shared our actual ooc names, I think of my character by her number.

my girl's number was 28. technically this rp game was a sequel to a similar one we'd done way back in 2018, so 28 was a continuation of my character from that. 28 was known as a peacemaker in the group who tried to keep everyone else grounded, but wouldn't take shit from others. she was definitely one of the nicest people in the group, but would call out bullshit if she saw it. when us participants started trying to find ways to plot against the entities running the games, 28 ended up becoming more of a leader-figure in the group along with a few others and tried to keep things between the other participants stable as these death games just got more and more stressful.

these games spanned over the course of nearly 9 months in real time so it's impossible for me to talk about everything that happened, but some highlights include 28 falling in love with another participant (22) and the two of them continuing to date even when 22 started working directly for one of the entities running the tournament while 28 herself was one of the leaders of the rebellion against the entities. communication goes a long way LMAO

later on in the rp a rival entity organization basically hijacked the games and forced all the og entities running it to either hide or become participants themselves. with this rival organization one of the new entities (known as the quarterman) picked out 28 and basically forced her into working for him as a hitman. the change happened over the course of like a month with 28 hearing dimes whisper to her all the time, until her soul got ripped out of her body and put into a dime that she had to keep on her at all times. after this though she could teleport, which was pretty cool!

I loved 28 as a character bc she tried so hard to be kind and keep everyone together but it was such a stressful situation and people got so harsh and bitchy with each other (all in character of course. we'd all have a huge argument and then hop into the ooc server to meme about it). the conflict she had between wanting to help the rebellion while her own gf worked with the 'enemy' was sooo much fun to rp. and of course my lovely friend lisa who played 22 was an amazing rp partner to have. lisa if you're reading this I miss our girls :(

it was just such a fun experience overall. I once had to order some really weird stuff off amazon once to build a fake radiation detector for a task video and my mom straight up thought I was building a bomb 😭 We did in character vcs both for plot but also sometimes we'd just drink and chat ic. the admins I worked with were so lovely and I'm so glad I had that experience bc it taught me so much about how rp games like that work and what style of improv rp I like. fun times :,)

Oc summaries

alright I decided do a mini lore dump of my different characters because my brain wont shut up about them ill put my ramblings under the read more if you want a summary of who exactly are my characters (its the characters ive drawn before and shared here lol) warning it does gets long as I realize each character I wrote a big paragraph explaining each of them lol

Birch: the dude as my profile pic lol. basically had a rough childhood its just him and his dad growing up and to help out for the house he got into sales and realized rich people are stupid and gullible so he got random junk as sold it as the next big thing and it worked. One night at one of the mansions of his rich clients finds this very odd book detailing a ritual of some sort with promises of knowledge and power beyond comprehension. He does the ritual ends up getting in contact with an eldritch being and has his mind (just slightly) broken but got these cool new powers now. He goal is now to go on a search for more information on how to contact these beings again and unlock more of that forbidden fruit (tho more he does it more he starts to turn corrupt its a whole thing) Hes not happy how its changing him physically and mentally but he is too obsessed over his goal. (tho in the campaign im going to play im hoping he learns the power of friendship and he stops before hes too far gone lol) oh yea hes also a warlock forgot to mention it and my fav rn.

Clay. Oh my baby my first dnd character I love her. Shes just a water genasi pirate I know cliche. She had an infamous pirate captain mom named Brooke but her mom settled down for a couple years with this hippy wood elf and she had twins clay and kai. Brooke pulled a parent trap on them where she took one kid and the dad took the other. Clay grew up with her mom and the crew on her ship. Brooke decided she needed to calm down and became a normal shipping company (most of the time there was some pirating aside) This made Clay a very wild child who does everything in the most chaotic way possible. Sadly her mom got deathly ill (she got poisioned) and she died so clay got the ship. She has been traveling around the seas with her crew which is basically her family and keep her moms spirit alive by living like her. She is a bard and loves to make friends everywhere she goes and get what she wants. She is about that grind baby all about da money. Very loud and pushy personality but if you get to know her shes just an excitable puppy who loves her friends so so much.

Kai. The sweeter and gentler of the twins. He grew up in a hippie commune middle of the forest with his dad. however since he was the only genasi there he was often treated differently than the rest. Always seen like an outsider. He became very reserved and recluse and spent most his time in the forest where he became friends with the mushrooms. Making him a druid. The mushrooms formed this symbiote relationship with Kai and now they help each other out and besties. He also is accidentally very morbid now as mushrooms are all about decay Kai is very comfortable with death and does not realize other people arent lol.Kai decided he had spent enough time in the forest and set out to go find his long lost twin that his dad told him about. However he has a difficult time in large crowds and dealing with people and takes a while to find her. When he meets up with clay the two are inseparable and become a very comedic and chaotic duo as both are unhinged on the opposite sides of the spectrum.

Vera. Shes basically the closest thing I have to a mary sue lol but I love her so much my unhinged little mad scientist. Basically grew in a rich family and was the top of her class for math and science. Got into a prestige university where she specialized in chemistry and biochemistry (im not a science major please dont judge my lack of science knowledge lol) and graduated top of her class. She is however a bit of a sadist and very curious so she often makes chemicals and viruses that could destroy humanity if she felt bored enough and likes to test it on anyone whos gullible enough to trust her. She even gets paid often to either make these dangerous chemicals or the cures for some. For her its not about the money its the science behind it. Big party girl loves to go to raves often gets dressed up in the best drip. Is up at ungodly hours chugging monster drinks like it water. You know she has that rgb gamer set up. Tried getting dark vision but her project backfired and now she just has glowing green eyes. (still cant see in the dark tho) just living her best life being a mad scientist and having fun with it despite how often she endangers her life and others lol

Quinn. She is high elf royalty however They hate their family (mostly her parents) so so much so she decides to run off and join the circus. Lol not really but they do become a famous jester who plays for all the royal courts across the lands. While they distract the crowds she likes to steal from them adding to her own collection of riches as a fuck you to their parents. They enjoy putting on performances as well for the children she visits when traveling around. She has a soft spot for kids. Otherwise a very standoffish personality who acts like they are above it all. Even tho she acts like that she is very, very lonely deep down and wishes they had even one friend who has their back. Oh yea absolute bisexual disaster, looses all sense of grace around whoever she finds attractive and becomes a rambling mess. Also she/they nonbinary, they like to fuck with gender presentation as a treat. i havent really fleshed them out more than that so yea lol.

gabriel, oh my poor gabriel I dont think of you that often. Basically hes a victorian british man who was happily married to his wife and was going to be a father but she falls deathly ill and tries to find this "cure(its vampirism)" that could save her, however things goes wrong and he ends up turning a vampire himself and the poor wife dies (no i did not fridge her i promise she has a backstory just im not putting it here) lives in his lonely home for hundreds of years isolated other than when he goes hunting for blood. Mopes around the place most of the time being a sad boy. Finds a vampire cat and now he has a cat. Eventually he finds a fellow vampire widow and they fall in love (I havent fleshed out the other vamp yet) and yea. I am not big into romance so I dont know why I wrote so much for gabriel so I tend to forget him as I dont care too much about his story lol hes mostly there so I can draw blood and cool victorian outfits.

Mighty Nein Next Gen AU, Part Two

This is part two of my Mighty Nein Next Gen AU where the Mighty Nein have kids. This is the link to the master list, right now it's just parts one and two but I will individually add every kid later on and their wacky hijinks in fanfic form:

Veth and Yeza spend a few years getting back in the swing of things before having another kid

They reopen Yeza's alchemy shop and Veth starts to also do some tinkering and sells it there too

Veth enjoys her family time, inviting all of the Nein to weekly dinners and making sure everyone stays connected

They also visit the Blooming Grove every couple of weeks because all of the Brenatto kids love their Uncle Cad

About three years after the finale, they get pregnant at the same time as Fjord and Jester's wedding

They give birth to a baby girl too and, five years later, another baby boy

The baby girl was born one day after Essek/Caleb/Molly's kid, sparking the rivalry the two girls would have till the day they die

Veth and Beau continue their rivalry by having their kids be rivals but that backfires horribly

Mostly due to the fact that Luc and TJ are similar ages and are chill, Veth's daughter is in an active rivalry with the ShadoWidoMauk daughter, and the youngest Brenatto is dating BeauYasha's youngest

Speaking of Beau and Yasha, these two had a small wedding with just the Nein and close family

Also immediately after the trial they adopt TJ, obviously

They go traveling for a while afterwards, showing TJ the world

Afterwards, Caleb offers Beau a teaching position which she does while also helping the Cobalt Soul

Yasha stays as a stay at home mom, taking care of TJ and her many, many, house plants

It was like a decade later, while on a mission for the Cobalt Soul, Beau saw a tiefling boy hiding in the back of a crime ring she was in charge of cleaning up, only like four or five years old

Beau and Yasha wanted another kid but were having trouble finding the right one

That and combined with the fact that she saw so much of herself in this little one, she took them home

All of the kids had to volunteer time at the Cobalt Soul, like when parents make their kids volunteer at the library lol

Finally, we have Cad

Cad is just vibing for the years, being the fun, chill uncle to all of the Nein kids need

Then, one day a little before Fjord and Jester's triplets are born, they have to bury a mother who died due to health issues a month or so after child birth

It leaves the Clay family in possession of an Air Genasi baby girl

Cad felt an extremely holy energy coming off her and decided to adopt her, naming her Cirrus Clay, like the clouds

When the Nein find out about this and meet her, they all start calling him Cad Dad

It takes him ten years to get the joke, I'm not kidding

The two are extremely close, telling each other everything

One problem though: she loves water and floating in it

Due to her being a bit airheaded at times, she has nearly drowned and her dad had to save her

She is extremely close with her aunts and uncles, her aunts Clarabelle and Calliope help her dye her hair pastel colors with moss

The Mighty Nein summary but I’ve only seen clips and the animated recap once months ago.

I am also likely trying to fill in blanks so I might be making stuff up.

Caleb and Nott, Yasha and Molly, Jester and Fjord and Beau meet and decide to fight crimes despite most of the being criminals themselves

Something happens in a circus???

I really have no idea. Someone recognised Molly as Lucien but he has no idea who Lucien is

Molly gives Caleb a kiss during a bad PTSD moment

Fjord files his tusks down but they tell him not to do that anymore, he is beautiful how he is :)

I think this is where they meet Kiri, a bird creature that repeats things?

Fjord, Jester and Yasha are KIDNAPPED by… a slave trader? Idk Laura was having a baby and Ashley is always away

Molly, Caleb, Beau, Nott and a dwarf they make friends with decide to attack but the advice is bad and Molly fucking dies. Permanently because Tal is edgy.

Later the gang meet Caduceus chilling in a graveyard who makes tea and he decides to help them for some reason. I think his grove is turning poorly? Because of bad magic. His family also disappeared years ago. He wants to find them.

They defeat the slavers (???) and free their friends but tell them Molly died :(

Something something. At some point they meet ‘the gentleman’ who is very cool and a water genasi. Later they talk to Jester’s Mum and they realise that was her Dad :o I don’t know if we see him again

For some reason they get on a boat and are basically pirates. There is a captain of a ship called Avantika and she is sexy.

This is something to do with Fjord’s patron Ukotoa which is a sea monster? Because Fjord fell in the sea and almost drowned and made his warlock pact then. Ukotoa wants to be freed and Avantika wants that. The Mighty Nein don’t do this. They also meet the plank king. I think they defeat Avantika.

Now at some point they find a magic beacon and find out they should really give it back to the people it was stolen from. There is a war going on and the return of the beacon heals some sort of rift. They meet Essek and I think Matt meant for him to be evil but he is sexy. And he knows dunamis and time magic and Caleb is into that!

At some point they meet a beast or something that Yasha used to know and he turns her against her friends. I think they get her back but not for a while I think as Ashley had to go lol. They probs get her back with the power of friendship.

Fjord at some point turns his back on Ukotoa (I think he throws his sword away?) and then he has no warlock patron but then the wildmother becomes his patron. And we realise he was secretly English the whole time.

Nott is also revealed to be a halfling cursed to be a goblin by… goblins. It takes a while but she eventually turns back to a halfling. She has a dweeby husband and young son.

Beau is a monk from the Colbalt Soul who is doing something and fuck I realise I know nothing about Beau. Her Dad basically sold her to the Cobolt Soul but she doesn’t know that. She is angry.

Caleb’s story is a lot and we find this out through the campaign and we also catch glimpses of Eadwulf and Astrid. Caleb wants to bring back his family but realises that Trent is the real problem. He has massive PTSD.

Caduceus at some point brings back his family who were petrified in the source of the bad magic but continues with the Mighty Nein

They meet up with Essek at some point and he reveals that he is on the run (?) as he stole the beacons and gave them away (including to the Cerberus Academy) because he wants them to be studied because in his… empire? They’re revered as religious items and he is an atheist. This made the war worse but the Mighty Nein don’t mind as he is sexy. The beacons are ancient pre-calamity tech I think?

At some point Jester hosts Traveler con for her minor deity the Traveler. I think they do a task on a beach for a cult for a volcano monster, one of whom is an amnesiac mother of Keyleth. After defeating this fake volcano god they host traveler con and the Traveller is revealed to be Artagan who is a fae creature from C1 (jester might have already known this by this point in the story).

At some point they decide to revive Molly and his body is gone and they talk to Henry Crabgrass (a very important NPC) that confirms that someone revived him. But they later realise that it isn’t Molly it’s Lucien who has taken over the body once again.

Caduceus WRECKS Trent with an epic put down about how no-one will mourn him RIP Trent

Yasha and Beau finally romance each other :)

Laura successfully romances her own husband

Jester tricks an old hat in a hut with a cupcake with the dust of deliciousness.

They hunt Lucien. He’s trying to do something with portals… and a city… trying to transport it somewhere. I think.

They kill Lucien and decide to revive Mollymauk but fail but then Caducues uses divine intervention and brings him back fucking EPIC.

Mollymauk is now Kinglsey Tealeaf as he forgot his memories but these guys are familiar (apart from Caduceus who literally doesn’t know this guy).

Caleb tells Essek he doesn’t want to try and bring back his parents cos they are dead. He becomes a teacher and some fans don’t like this. He and Essek are together until they aren’t and some fans don’t like this. Beau and Yasha are together and so are Fjord and Jester and some fans don’t like this. Fjord and Jester and Kingsley go on a boat? Beau and Caleb decide to take down the Cerberus Academy. The end!

Previous anon here! I totally understand what you mean i have the same issue with my own ocs. So can I ask who's your oldesr oc (you've had the longest) and who's your favorite and why? :3c I wanna hear about them but it's hard to think of specific questions! Sidenote, you inspired me to start reblogging things as inspo for my own ocs!

OH I feel you, I'm the exact same way about not knowing what to specifically ask about other people's OCs lmao it's so hard to think of good questions!

My oldest (current) OC is my ranger, Elyss!! I've been playing her for coming up on EIGHT YEARS, which is admittedly not actually as much as it sounds because the run schedules for all the campaigns I'm in tend to be pretty sparse, ahaha :') She is also still my favorite, my beloved girl... 🥺💕 That's at least partly because I've been playing her for so long and for awhile she was my only dnd character, so I've had a lot of opportunity to think about her and play her and get to know her as a character.

She's a water genasi who was born and raised in a land where genasi are essentially unheard of, so she's spent most of her life fairly rejected and lonely. She ended up (voluntarily) living alone in the woods for something close to ten years, and she has a very nature-inspired True Neutral philosophy, so when we started the campaign with the premise of 'an established group of adventures trying to stop A Bad Guy from Taking Over The World' I had to figure out why she would care about that, and one of the answers was 'well... she loves her friends,' which has informed SO much about everything about her ever since. On a practical level, it means I get to engage with the game even if Elyss wouldn't necessarily want to (eg if the paladin wants to do a dangerous stupid thing to save some villagers, I want to go with him to help keep him safe), but it's also made her really interesting and really emotionally rewarding to roleplay with. I'm fortunate in that all my fellow players in her campaign are amazing AND Elyss has meaningful relationships with most of their characters, so I've been able to explore her navigating those relationships and her own feelings... at the beginning of the campaign, she felt really strongly that her love for her companions was completely one-sided, so had a lot of Issues about needing to be unambiguously useful and never a liability to avoid rejection and losing her right to be a part of the group. Unfortunately the circumstances of this campaign have given her... really severe trust issues to the point of sometimes paralyzing paranoia, BUT she DOES now believe that (most of) her close friends actually care about her in return, so, that's something :') I guess tl;dr without explaining the entire campaign and her entire personal development, she just has a lot of complex feelings and life circumstances that are not only interesting to play and think about but that also just... make me wish for the best for her. She's had a really hard time, so it fills me with joy whenever she gets a little reprieve, I'm overwhelmed on her behalf when things are inevitably really bad for her again, and I'm deeply invested in her path toward hope and growth and a happier, more stable future 🥺💕

All that said, I've gotten to play her a lot less lately, and while she's still my favorite, the margin isn't as wide as it used to be, lol. But I dunno if I could put a finger on the definitive second favorite? It depends on who I've played and/or have been obsessing over the most recently I think, lol. Right at this second that feels like a tossup between Juniper, my druid, and Melliwyk, my wizard; I'm not gonna do another wall of text for each of them for this ask BUT-- June is basically the character archetype I have the softest spot for (sweetheart, awkward, big ol nerd) and I wanna kiss her and give her soup, and Mel is a DIFFERENT archetype I tend to be drawn to (mad science type friendly little wierdo) but she has also developed depth that I wasn't expecting and now I have a lot of Thoughts and Feelings about HER as well. Also, June gives me a good outlet for a lot of soft tenderness, Mel is a good outlet for me in real life being a big fuckin nerd, and Elyss is my single best outlet for just. really loving to be really good at DPS when I'm playing a game kjhkdfhjd

aislinn DOES have a magic item but it’s homebrew- we call it the starsaber. so ok so this is a long-ish story but

aislinn was originally a blood hunter who got their abilities from an archfey; that archfey turned out to be a manipulative prick (lol it was loki) and aislinn was chosen by artemis to be their champion, so they yeeted loki out of their head and swore themselves to artemis, which traded their blood hunter levels for paladin levels.

over a year later artemis did something very cruel- aislinn asked for a “starfall miracle” (starfall is a winter celebration but also their birthday) and artemis said they would see their family at sunset. cool! aislinn spent all day so excited bc they hadn’t seen their family in six decades and then what it turned out to be was the asshole middle brother, lugus, on tv, talking massive shit about aislinn and calling them insane

aislinn was understandably FURIOUS and had a huge confrontation directly w artemis eventually where they pointed out “this war started with the failures of the gods and now you want us to do all your dirty work for you and don’t have an ounce of care or respect for us” to which artemis was like “lol bitch. why would i care abt y’all. i know how this story ends. my weapon i gave you is your only advantage here. either you beg my forgiveness or maybe i’ll give it to prisha (the bbeg)”

and aislinn’s stubborn ass said “NO YOU KNOW WHAT FUCK YOU I DONT NEED YOU”

they lost multiple levels of paladin but not all- they started drawing from the power of their bloodline, and in a side quest of a year in game, trained diligently with a god-killer from another universe to learn to stand against gods and not die. in doing that, they had to open themselves up to drawing power from their own ancestry bc their great-grandfather was the archfey of starlight so now they have all their paladin levels back, rely on no god or creed, and their eyes even turned silver like starlight as a result. also they came back able to kill gods and part of that is their weapon!!!

multi-purpose lightsaber with a base that allows for those different weapon “types” that:

- has an additional +3 to all attack and damage rolls which means it

- deals a base, a BASE of 3d12+13 radiant damage (we’re a very high stakes campaign so a lot of our weapons are homebrew to do larger amounts of damage)

- but also deals an additional 3d10 radiant to any non-mortal/god-type creature (gods, archfey, eldritch beings)

- and on a natural 20, aislinn automatically severs a limb of the creature they hit (this happened with the fight with their father where they cut off one of his legs to add insult to injury)

okay so first things first OBVIOUSLY alaira is a hottie w a body. shes currently on a quest to get blessings from all 4 elemental gods in order to wield her racial artefact (a crown), and i like to imagine that with each blessing she has received (3/4 now!!! only water left - very thematic) she has become more and more 'elemental' looking (she grew up w her high elf mama and never saw other genasi so i imagine she basically looks elven and has become more elemental looking as i said) and thus i imagine that she has like water light lines (like the top of water in sunlight) all over her skin. she is HOT like thats PERSONALITY TRAIT NUMERO UNO!!!

secondly HOLY HELL THAT IS ONE FUCKING CAMPAIGN!!!! thats sooo intense holy shit. wow! aislinn has been through a lot! fuck artemis all my homies hate artemis! very cruel! but paladin levels tied to bloodlines is very very cool & empowering!!! and what a fucking lightsaber holy shittt MINIMUM 3 D 12 PLUS 13 like ...... woweeeee

i had a dagger that is +2d8 ice damage. i havent really had the chance to upgrade weapons for a while, hence im on the lookout!

alaira is unfortunately very cagey (her wisdom only recently went up to 10, she was on 9 for a while and that manifested as literally unable to come up with any solutions to problems other than revenge). she barely considers her party friends hahaha! but theres a dragonborn named miraak who is another pc and hes a big friendly giant and while she thought he was just stupid for a while they had this really beautiful open conversation revently and now she considers him a friend 🥺 ultimately tho her top bestie is her mama. she also has a familiar but rhats more utility than bestie (bc its associated w magic which she is only recently trying to unlearn negativity toward.... u understand). also one of our party members who she cared for most left ages ago so she feels really Abandoned by Everyone That Matters iykwim. anyway here's my alaira playlist if u want HAHAH:

The RotBTD+ Gang Plays DnD! (Feat. my ships, sorry not sorry XD)

So highkey I’ve actually been wanting to do a “The Gang Plays DnD” type post for AGES now, but then I saw @hobie-brown and @ohlooksheswriting-wips do DnD AU posts for RotBTD, and then I was like “Ah shit, I really should finish mine, eh?” So thank you to both of you for inspiring me to get off my ass and actually write the post!!!

Hiccup DMs. He comes up with this super complex plot revolving around dragons (because of course) where the party has to dismantle this society ruled by evil knights who want to genocide all of the dragons. Imagine his chagrin when the party wants to do nothing but fuck around in towns and aggravate NPCs 90% of the time.

They usually end up playing at Jack’s apartment, mainly because Hiccup’s dad doesn’t really want a bunch of loud nerds yelling about 20-sided dice in his household while he’s trying to work, if he can at all help it. Jack’s sister regularly barges into their living room and roasts the fuck out of Jack and his friends for being such damn nerds and eats all of their DnD snacks they’ve set out. If they’re in the middle of a combat session, she always gleefully proclaims that they’re all going to die. While Jack is annoyed by this, the rest of the party finds it deeply hilarious.

Jack Overland plays the absolute mayhem warlock Jack Frost, who got his powers through making a deal with the archfey Prince of Frost and has absolutely no qualms about being an evil god’s mortal Sower of Chaos. He spends the vast majority of the campaign doing such useful things as creating ice slicks under annoying NPCs and freezing people’s drinks. He also plays a Tiefling because absolutely no one can talk this boy out of playing the creepy demon race.

Rapunzel plays a woodland nymph druid who is also the party healer (because of course she is). Her name is probably Sunlily or something else suitably hippie-esque. Whenever there’s downtime (or whenever the rest of the party is also dicking around, and she can get away with it), Rapunzel likes to go into the nearest forest and pick the best berries and nuts for the rest of the party. She also loves baking fruit pies and cooking the best nymph food for her companions when given the chance. Definitely the party Cinnamon Roll (every party has one!). She often will turn into cute animals to distract the guards while the party infiltrates a building.

Merida’s character is the party archer and general ranged weapon master, as well as a raging lesbian. Hiccup learns very quickly that any male NPC who tries to flirt with her will very quickly get impaled with an arrow. She can’t ever decide if she wants to be a ranger or a rogue, so she multiclasses in both for flare. She also plays a Tiefling, and continually insists that her character is both scarier and sexier than Jack’s. In combat, she either Leeroy Jenkins her way in with a sword and just starts slashing every which way, or just shoots 90% of the enemies with arrows before the fight even starts. There’s really no in between. She can get away with this because she’s highkey one of the party tanks, and consistently deals a shitton of damage.

Anna plays a human bard, basically having read over the class options and going “Wait, in this one I get to make stylish medieval music??? And wear dramatic and garish outfits and a dumb hat??? And cast wacky illusion spells??? And do silly little magic tricks??? And INSPIRE EVERYONE??? Hell yeah, I’m in!!!” She mostly uses magic attacks in combat (definitely favors Tasha’s Hideous Laughter), but occasionally when she’s out of spell slots she’ll just take to slamming enemies in the face with her lute. She also has WAY too much fun with Vicious Mockery, let’s be real.

Elsa, upon hearing Jack’s character concept, rolls her eyes so far up in her head she can see her damn brain, and vows to play his concept, but serious–solely out of spite. She rolls up a super OP elf Chaos Sorcerer, filled with lots of brooding angst about how uncontrollable her winter powers can get if she isn’t careful. She combines it a bit with Storm Sorcerer so she can create literal blizzards, and Hiccup ends up allowing it just because he thinks it’s cool. Although Elsa’s character is undoubtedly aggravated by the rest of the party’s antics, she starts becoming grudgingly protective of these idiots and can deal some pretty crazy damage when her companions are threatened. She also contains one of the party’s only brain cells.

Eugene of course plays dashing rogue master thief Flynn Rider. Although his high deception and lockpicking skills certainly come in handy, he’s the most chaotic neutral fucker you’ve ever met and will take any excuse to rob NPCs blind or cheat them out of every cent they have in a tavern card game. It’s nigh impossible to get him to cooperate with the rest of the party much of the time, and often Elsa’s character has to either bribe him with some of her family’s gold or threaten to freeze him to stop him backstabbing one or more party members. Eugene’s character forces Hiccup to add in many more heist plotlines than he originally intended. This delights Eugene immensely, and sometimes he goes a bit crazy planning elaborate heists.

Moana plays a sorcerer water genasi. She can control any body of water, but she has a special affinity for controlling saltwater (i.e. the ocean lol). She also requests an animal handling bonus, but only with marine animals, solely because she thought it would be funny. She’s also an ex-pirate who robbed a lot of wealthy merchant ships and freed their slaves back in the day, which Merida thinks is incredibly badass. Moana tends to get bored and unengaged when there are no bodies of water to play around with, so Hiccup ends up having to add a lot more lakes, rivers, and oceans to the campaign than he originally planned on. Moana also takes a sailing skill, and thus the party often ends up traveling by boat. Typically Eugene and Rapunzel will infiltrate and hijack it, and Moana will sail it. Moana probably contains the party’s only other brain cell.

Astrid plays a gigantic berserker orc barbarian who is never without his trusty axe. Astrid is hands down the party’s top tank, and unquestionably deals the most damage every combat session. Much like Merida’s character, Astrid’s character is absolutely a shameless power fantasy. Hiccup pretty easily picks up on this, but is too polite to say anything about it. Jack also picks up on this, but is hardly as courteous as their DM, and teases Astrid mercilessly. Astrid is not amused.

Rapunzel requests that her weapon of choice be a frying pan, her justification being that her character found a discarded one at the edge of a human village outside her woods and mistaked it for a highly-dangerous human weapon. Hiccup is like “…you know what? Fuck it” and rolls up stats for a goddamn frying pan. Jack has nigh-endless admiration for Rapunzel for choosing such a goddamn memey, absurd, yet oddly effective weapon and it definitely makes the poor boy even more smitten with her than he already is.

Eugene and Merida have a bet going on who can sleep with more sexy barmaids. Merida is currently winning, much to Eugene’s chagrin. She’s not even inherently better at seducing NPCs, she and Eugene have the same charisma stat–she just consistently rolls better than Eugene. Eugene is incredibly salty about this.

Anna and Elsa want to be sisters in-game as well, but neither want to change their race–so Anna decides her character was adopted. Hiccup and the rest of the party go along with it, mainly because there’s something deeply hilarious about a regular human bard being adopted and raised by a family of high-powered elf ice mages.

Astrid is absolutely the sort of player who tends to get bored and restless outside of fights, and tends to fidget and twiddle her thumbs waiting for the next combat session. Jack picks up on this, and purposely does more roleplay for longer just to piss her off. He’s also just a very dramatic fucker and highkey loves roleplay.

When she’s not causing mayhem around the town or sleeping with hot women, Merida tries to entertain Astrid between combat sessions by offering to spar with her. Unfortunately, this does not usually end well for poor Merida, as even the most hardcore and badass of tieflings is prone to getting dumpstered by an 8-foot-tall barbarian orc with an axe. Astrid is, nonetheless, grateful to have someone to fight.

Rapunzel, Elsa, and Moana will humor Hiccup and attempt to actually play the main plot. Meanwhile, Jack, Merida, and Eugene are a DM’s worst nightmare. They constantly derail the damn campaign to fuck around, cause mayhem, and do inane shenanigans in every. Damn. Town. They go to. Anna is kind of a wildcard–she’ll typically go with whatever group looks like they’re going to be doing something more interesting. Astrid will go along with whichever group is more likely to get into a fight–which, often as not, is Jack and his posse of terrible Chaotic Neutrals (who have definitely pissed off a number of NPCs into attacking them).

As the campaign goes on, Elsa and Eugene become the beleaguered Party Mom and Dad. Both are quite aggravated by this–especially poor Eugene, who just wanted to play a morally-gray charming rogue who stole everything and got away with it and then accidentally ended up caring about these idiots he got stuck with.

Anna initially joins the campaign because she has a planet-size crush on Hiccup, and inevitably is the one who dragged Elsa into it too. Being the hopeless romantic that she is, Anna writes a love interest into her backstory. Hiccup eventually has the party run into said love interest, and Anna is overjoyed. He starts flirting with her as the love interest, and it’s easily the best 30 minutes of Anna’s life.

Moana and Elsa also give Hiccup pretty detailed backstories, and he works in little subplots for them. Moana gets to bring water back to a dying part of the jungle in the middle of a draught, while Elsa gets to go on a whole sidequest to explore her family history and how they came to be sorcerers.

Jack, Merida, and Eugene also give Hiccup fairly elaborate backstories, but Jack’s and Merida’s are like 99% memes and Dumb Shit. Hiccup tries to give all of them backstory-related plot hooks, but inevitably any hooks he provides are either stabbed, robbed, or frozen. Honestly any plot hook offered to these 3 will be all but spat in the face of and tossed off a cliff.

The one relevant part of Eugene’s backstory is that he and Rapunzel decide they used to be partners in crime before the campaign started. Rapunzel would infiltrate and scout out places he wanted to rob as small, unobtrusive animals (her preferred Wild Shape is a chameleon) and later distract the guards as a bunny or kitten while he went in and took every gold coin in sight. In return, Flynn Rider would bribe builders to not develop into Sunlily’s forest. Rapunzel and Eugene partly came up with this For Funsies, but also it was Rapunzel’s sneaky way of tricking Eugene into having prior connections in the party so he’d be less likely to betray them. It works pretty well–although the entire party is protective of Cinnamon Roll Sunlily, Flynn is certainly especially protective of her.

Astrid does the absolute bare minimum as far as backstories go. She is literally just here to smash stuff, slice people, and beat some fuckers up.

Rapunzel has a backstory, but she’s typically so invested in the main plot and the other party members that Hiccup rarely needs to bring it in to keep her engaged. She’s highkey the party emotional rock, and probably the only one keeping them all together.

On that note, Rapunzel’s character is the ONLY one who can get Jack’s character to take the plot even REMOTELY seriously. Like he’ll be dicking around in the nearest tavern challenging the nearest orc to a drinking game, and Rapunzel will come in and ask him to help them on a Main Plot Quest. And he’ll be like “come onnnnn I’m having funnn” and she’ll be like “Jack pleeeeeease?” and you just. Can’t resist Sunlily’s puppy dog eyes. At all. Also, whenever Sunlily is genuinely threatened, any silliness immediately goes out the window and Jack Frost is OUT FOR BLOOD.

For better or for worse, Rapunzel is not immune to being looped into Jack’s shenanigans. Occasionally if either Merida or Eugene have a particularly hare-brained scheme she’ll go along with it, but by and large Jack is the most successful in convincing her to temporarily abandon the plot and cause mild mischief with him. They once wasted half a session creating an elaborate “ice theme park” for some squirrels in the forest.

Hiccup tries to get Merida to play the main plot by eventually having there be no more sexy female NPCs to seduce in the towns they go to. Unfortunately, this backfires–Merida just hooks up with Moana’s character instead. When asked to roll for how good the lay is, Merida gets a nat 20–and thus her character and Moana’s character end up hooking up regularly throughout the rest of the campaign.

Hiccup introduces a few Wise Old Mentor-type NPCs to guide the party throughout the campaign. While Rapunzel, Elsa, Moana, and Anna actually try to listen to them and take their advice, Merida, Jack, and Eugene absolutely refuse to take them seriously and mercilessly play pranks on them.

At one point, Hiccup gives the party the option to attempt to tame a group of wild dragons and use them as mounts. They all have to make animal handling checks. Anna, Rapunzel, Elsa, and Moana pass. The rest of the party fails, with Jack and Eugene crit-failing. Hilarity ensues.

Hiccup ends up bringing back Anna’s backstory love interest as an NPC regular. Anna thinks he’s just being a good friend and a good DM and trying to incorporate her backstory as much as he can, but really, he just wants an excuse to regularly flirt with her. He hardly has the balls to out-of-game.

Merida comes out as gay toward the end of the campaign. Everyone in the group is extremely supportive, of course, but everyone is also like “Merida…with the amount of barmaids you’ve banged…and the amount of times you and Moana’s character hooked up…this isn’t exactly surprising.”

Hiccup actually finds a way to use Jack and Elsa’s same-concept-opposite-execution characters to the plot’s advantage. He decides one of the main villains will have a prophecy saying he’ll be taken down by a powerful ice mage. The party manages to fool this guy into thinking this ice mage is Jack, and sends Jack to fight him. As soon as the villain sees Jack, he’s like “WHAT??? THIS clown???” (word has absolutely spread throughout the land of Jack not using his ice powers for anything besides mildly annoying trolling). Naturally, the bad guy lets his guard down after thinking he’s going to fight this literal joke, and then Elsa crashes in from the side and absolutely dumpsters him.

Jack tries to defeat the final boss by just annoying him so much that he leaves. Unfortunately, he just annoys him so much that he attacks Rapunzel’s character. Jack’s just like “oh HELL no” and attacks with absolutely nothing held back. Turns out he’s pretty terrifying when he’s not using his magic for Dumb Antics.

During the final boss of the campaign, the Big Bad tries to one-shot Moana’s character, and Merida’s character super theatrically jumps in front of her to take the blow instead. Rapunzel just barely manages to heal Merida’s character, but it’s a really close call. During all this, Merida is like “ah shit...maybe I’m NOT just in this to get fantasy-laid.” After the fight’s over, her and Moana’s characters have a big dramatic love confession and share a Big Damn Kiss in front of everyone. It’s pretty epic.

After the final session of the campaign, Merida drags Moana outside Jack’s apartment and sputters and trips over her words for a solid minute before she finally gets out that through all this nonsense...well...maybe it’s not just in the game that she thinks Moana is hot. Moana just gets this HUGE grin on her face and says “c’mere, Leeroy Jenkins” and just pulls Merida in and kisses her. Cue the rest of the party barging in on them. Merida and Moana freeze, and there’s a moment of terrified silence...and then the entire party starts cheering them on like “took you long enough!”

The entire rest of the party could detect the sexual tension. Literally all of them.

But Eugene is like “HA, THIS MEANS IF WE DO A SEQUEL CAMPAIGN I’M WINNING THAT BET! BECAUSE YOU’RE GONNA BE DATING MO’S CHAR AND THUS NOT ABLE TO SLEEP WITH ANY MORE BARMAIDS!”

By the epilogue session, Jack and Rapunzel are dating. Merida and Moana are also dating. Hiccup and Anna STILL haven’t figured out why they’re so prone to spending half the session flirting when Anna’s love interest shows up, and Hiccup STILL hasn’t figured out why he likes to have Anna’s love interest show up so often. Bless their souls. Maybe they’ll figure it out next campaign...?

Damn I actually really like this...maybe if people like it I’ll do some incorrect quotes or a drabble or something??? Or maybe some HCs from next campaign???

My Attempts At Making Unique Nonhumans Part 4: Aasimar/Tieflings/Genasi

Listen, time is soup. I forgot it was Wednesday. It’s been a Week. Anyways, have some funky magic people.

Aasimar: I really like the lore for the Aasimar so I really didn’t change much besides the ways they are created, of which there are now 3 kinda loose categories. The first is the normal way, a semi-celestial born of mortal parents due to some sort of divine happenings or a mortal infused with celestial energy. The second is being literally part celestial from a very different kind of “divine happenings”. The third is that they were created by direct divine intervention, which is much more rare, and usually results in a more obviously celestial appearance (as well as often being created as fully grown adults with no mortal template). I also kept the stuff about their “purpose” though I do think it’s a little more loose and hard to determine than the official lore makes it seem. Anyway, onto the funky stuff! Aasimar are immensely varied due to mainly two factors: 1. They don’t have genetics since they’re literally angel people, and most celestials primarily self-actualize. 2. The ones that used to be a part of/were born from mortal species will retain those features as well. So honestly, an Aasimar could be just a plain looking human who sometimes sprouts glowing wings, or an Aasimar could be an 8 foot tall lady with silver skin, glowing markings, and wings on her ankles that match the 4 that appear on her back. So yeah, they can get all sorts of weird. Extra eyes, all sorts of wings, holy markings, weird colors, glowy bits, all of it. A lot of it fluctuates too, especially with the more emotionally driven of aasimar. For example, they might glow slightly when happy or proud, or their eyes might get cloudy when confused or angry. And any Aasimar’s appearance of their angelic features might change based on how they feel, due to the self-actualization bits of their celestial heritage.

Tieflings: Tieflings, my beloved. Same as the Aasimar, I kept most of the lore and just added some ways they are created. (Also I removed the racism against them because I don’t like it. They aren’t even fully fiends, leave them alone.) The first way is obviously via curse or fiendish pact passing down bloodlines like the official lore. The second is that they are the product of mortal/fiendish relations, because monsterfuckers. The third way is when fiendish energy infuses a place or person it can create tieflings, especially if the person/someone nearby is pregnant (baby becomes the tief). I also decided there should be demonic Tieflings too, because I want to, and it really makes sense for that third way especially. (In my world, places of great evil/sorrow/etc can create demons based on what happened there, so that sort of applies with Tieflings on a smaller scale.) Also, like Aasimar, Tieflings can vary widely as well. Could be an average bloke whose eyes are just red orbs or it could be a fourteen-fingered ivory-skinned half-demon with a set of horns shaped like a crown on their head. So yeah, pretty much anything. Some commons ones are wacky eyes, acidic or boiling blood, spines and horns, tails, pointy bits, and pretty much anything slightly spooky you can think of. Generally though, these traits will mirror or mimic the curse/fiendish magic/demonic heritage that makes them a tiefling, and unlike Aasimar this rarely changes even throughout generations.

Genasi: Okay so I did it again, I added some new origins for genasi, because there’s so much potential. First way to get genasi is for elemental magic to imbue itself in someone, which could mean you were born during a magical storm or you witnessed an opening to the realm of fire or a thousand other things. Second way is to have elemental heritage, which is far less common, but it still happens. (I also extended this to not just djinn, because again, the potential). I also added some more types of genasi besides fire, water, air, and earth. In my world there are also storm genasi, smoke/steam genasi, dust/sand genasi, ice genasi, and life genasi. Genasi can be widely varied as well, depending on what elemental energies they have, but within elements many genasi can look different too, based on how much elemental magic they have. For example, a fire genasi could be just a human with glowy eyes and fire powers OR someone with glowing fiery tattoos and literal fire for hair etc etc. I think as far as biology goes here there isn’t really a lot besides the manifestations of the elements over top of whatever mortal species they would have been/their other heritage is. Like, a dwarvish ice genasi would still have all the dwarf things (like the two hearts and metallic bones and etc) but they would also have a body temperature of next to nothing (even worse for a mountain dwarf lol) and smooth icy skin and the ability to freeze water by touching it and all the ice genasi things.

Now where all of this gets really weird is when you start mixing these three. Tiefling or Aasimar based Genasi is probably the most common since elemental magic is cosmically neutral and would just lay on top of the other thing, but like. A half Tiefling half Aasimar I’m sure would be very interesting, and who knows what the mortal bases for that were (imagine if they were different too). Also, Tiefling/Aasimar/Genasi bloodlines tend to overpower mortal ones so there can be generations of them from one event.

Basically, I like to give my players the opportunity to make the most complicated character designs possible, is what I’m saying.

Hey, could I ask about your Heartless AUs? The bits I've seen are really interesting. What are they about? What roles do they (the characters) play?

Hoooo boy okay, first of all thank u so much for asking!! I've thought of quite a few but haven't had much time to flesh them out, so this is going to be partially an infodump about stuff I already know about 'em and partially me spitballing lolol

-Pokemon AU is definitely the one that I have the most fleshed out! There's not much in the way of plot (none of these have much plot actually). Heartless, Doppel, and Glass are all trainers, all with different reasons for training. Flint is the current champion and has been for ~a year. Eira, Lance, Alastor, Lorelei, and Alchemy are all gym leaders. The big bad evil group is called Team Pyre; Alastor is the leader, and all the Jury members are Team Pyre members. Bandy poses as a trainer to gain intel. River runs a Pokemon daycare. Diana is the leader of the Pyre division that hunts rare and shiny Pokemon, and Dock takes care of the team's 'mons!

-Greaser AU. Loosely based on The Outsiders, but doesn't follow the plot of the book because I Don't Want To Cry. Heartless, Doppel, Glass, Flint, Dock, Diana, and Lance are all greasers. Alastor, Alchemy, Lorelei, Bandy, River, and Eira are Socs (basically the rich kids if you're not familiar with The Outsiders). As far as plotline, all I really know is that Eira was a greaser as a kid and was best friends with Lance, but he got basically a scholarship to the fancy private school across town becuase his grades were so good, then he ended up basically getting "adopted" by one of the rich kids and his friend group. He left his old friend group behind completely and doesn't keep contact with them anymore, and Lance really resents him for it.

-Siren AU. I don't know a ton about this one tbh. I know that Lorelei, Eira, and Bandy are all sirens, but outside of that, I don't really know what roles people would fill. I'm leaning towards making it more pirate-y rather than modern, but I'm not 100% on that yet

-Flower shop/tattoo parlor AU. This one's Winter Solstice because Of Course It Is. Flint's family runs a flower shop downtown and he works there full-time. Eira is a tattoo artist at the tattoo and piercing parlor next door. Lance is a frequent customer at the tattoo parlor, he and Eira are exes but they're on good terms. Lance is dating Bandy now. Also might make this a bit of a band AU, but I don't want things to get too cluttered. Either way, Lance is in a band. River also works at the flower shop- she and Flint are childhood best friends. At some point, Flint's mom temporarily puts him in charge of handling the bills because she has other things to attend to, but he inevitably forgets to pay some of them and their water gets shut off. He ends up going next door to the tattoo parlor and asking them if he can borrow some of their water. Eira is working the counter that day and says yes, because he's not a dick. Flint kinda chats him up a bit, they have some solid banter and Flint starts making excuses to go over and talk to Eira from time to time :>

-D&D AU!! This one, again, has No Plot Whatsoever lol. All I really have sorted are people's races and classes. This one's gonna be long, sorry 'bout that haha. Heartless is a reborn wild magic sorcerer. Alchemy is a changeling glamour bard. Flint is a fire genasi sun soul monk. Eira is an eladrin battlemaster fighter/storm sorcerer. Doppel and Glass are both half-elf arcane trickster rogues. River is a human life cleric. Alastor is a vampire abjuration wizard. Dock is a half-orc death cleric. Lorelei is an aasimar whispers bard. Bandy is a high elf arcane trickster/lore bard. Diana is a shifter hunter ranger/gunslinger fighter. Aaaand Lance is a (reskinned) dragonborn eldritch knight!!

-Marvel AU. Don't know much about this one yet. Again, no plot. Just characters. I know that Flint is Cap, Eira is Bucky, Bandy is Loki, and Lance will probably be Deadpool. That's all I've got lol-
