Ama öyle bir evresinden geçiyorsun ki hayatının, başka bir yere de ait değilsin.

Yurt odana girdiğinde de ya yeni nesil anahtarınız olan güç kartını duvara takman gerektiğini unutuyorsun ya da yuvasının yerini bulduramıyorsun. Üzerinde yurdunun logosunun olduğu ve oda numaranın yazdığı o manyetik kart gibi sen de; yuvan neresi, bilemiyorsun.

18 senedir her gece, gözlerin beyninle mükemmel bir uyum içinde çalışıp ayın ve sokak lambalarının pencerenden içeri süzülen zayıf ışığında bile görebilmeni sağladığında odanın o her santimini ezbere bildiğin duvarlarını incelemeye koyulurdun. En sevdiğin renk olduğuna karar verdiğin için mavi boyadığınız duvarların çatlaklarını, badana katmanlarının zamanla oluşturduğu minimal tümsek ve çukurları izlerdin. O kadar çok izlerdin ki sonunda bir şeylere benzerlerdi; ruh hâline göre şekillenir, her gece farklı karakterlere öykünürlerdi.

Bir de, ne zaman baksan göz göze geldiğiniz bir prenses vardı mavi duvarında, hatırlıyorsun değil mi? Şık elbisesinin kabarık eteği yüzünden üzerine oturduğu hayvan bir at mı yoksa ejderha mı, söylemek zordu ama kızın duruşundaki asalet ve uzun saçlarını süsleyen tacı, çok net seçiliyordu. Gerçi duvardaki arkadaşlarını annenle tanıştırmaya karar verdiğinde annen onları göremediğini söylemişti ya, neyse.

Dün gece, nispeten yabancı olduğun bir odadaydın. Yine bir kız vardı karşında. Bir prenses değildi, tacı yoktu. Yatağında mışıl mışıl uyuyordu. Oda arkadaşın. Aranız, tanıştığınız ve birbirinize en zorlama gülümsemelerinizi gösterdiğiniz o günden beri aklında tekrar tekrar kurduğun senaryolardakinden, hayal edebildiğinden daha da iyi. Yine de günün her saati birlikte olunca, amfide yan yana oturup geceleri yan yana yataklarda uyuyunca yalnız kalmayı özlemen çok normal. Arada kendini dışarı atıp tek başına dolaşmaya çıkman, etrafına bakına bakına gezinmek istemen de bundan belki.

Bir hafta sonu yine, gezinmeye çıkmıştın. Kısa sürede sevmiştin burayı, insanlarını; turist dolu olmasına rağmen Trakyalı kalabilmiş samimi çarşısını... Hiç geçmediğin yollardan geçtin o gün ve daha önce görmediğin bir duvar gördün. Badana ve beton katmanlarının, içindeki karakterleri ortaya çıkarmak istercesine, yer yer döküldüğü kırmızı bir duvar. Odandaki gibi. Ancak yeterince bakarsan içindeki karakterleri görebileceğin bir duvar. Anonim bir sanatçı; annesinin hayali arkadaşlarını garipsediği o küçük kızın elini tutarcasına “Bak, onları ben de görüyorum.” der gibi, o beton katmanlarının, duvar çatlaklarının sınırlarını belirtmişti. Gördüğü karakterleri sprey boyasıyla çizmişti.

It’s #bannedbookweek and I started with #bridgetoterabithia by #katherinepaterson The movie based on this book made me ugly cry when it came out, but I loved it. I kept putting off #reading it though because I thought the book would hit harder. I’m glad I finally did because the book was so good. I also loved the interview with both the author and her son who directed the movie. People want to ban this book because of the death scene. They think it’s not appropriate for young kids, but this is based on a similar incident that happened to her son. Kids have to deal with death especially in our current situation living through a pandemic and all. The Bridge to Clarity

Has anyone ever had a moment where you realize “Oh my god, that's not true?!” 

Trust me, you’ll have this experience multiple times throughout your life.

One of the earliest memories I have of this is when I was in the 3rd grade. I’m at the ripe age of 7 or 8, loving my grilled cheeses and constantly watching Barbie and the Nutcracker, believing everyone gets their happy ending.

Then one day we had a movie day in class and our teacher chose to show us Bridge to Terabithia. For those who haven’t seen it, I apologize for the spoilers up ahead. However, this movie did come out in 2007.

As I am watching this movie I am completely captivated by a young Josh Hutcherson and wishing I was AnnaSophia Robb. Their characters are in middle school and eventually become good friends by creating their own imaginary world called Terabithia. They become even closer because of it. They were able to take control of their reality by living it out in Terabithia. I was so enchanted by this fantasy and their friendship.

I was shocked by a sudden turn of events in which AnnaSophia Robb’s character had tragically passed. I was absolutely heartbroken. I distinctly remember being in a single file line in the hallway and without warning, I was crying. I guess in a way I was mourning the character’s death. I think I had such blind hope for her return to the plot because up until that point I watched movies that ended happily. Sure, there might be a minor bump in the road, but it always evened out. I remember asking my teacher in the hallway “She’s coming...back, isn’t she?”

But that’s the thing: not everyone finds a happy ending right away. A great professor of mine mentioned that what makes a good movie is the growth. Good people can become bad. Bad people push themselves to be good. The princess may never get the prince, and the prince may never find a princess.

To be frank, those are the stories worth hearing. Ones that aren’t tied up in a bow to perfection. You may experience bereavement, heartbreak, and devastation, but they will only be a section, not the summation. My 3rd grade intelligence had been awakened to a whole new possibility of a narrative. Now I understand a tale of woe or disappointment. In life we are so much more than the hardships we face.

I’ll still watch a Barbie film every now and then though.
