i mean i also read it because a friend whos rly into queer SFF fiction circles recced it but she did kinda lead with "the writer used to write hs fanfic...tasmyn..taz...?" to which i replied

of COURSE I read the locked tomb because i heard taz had written a book. of course. ill consume most any media made by a beloved homestuck bnf. thats also why i played undertale. and read like..snotgirl. and idk... watched the new dub of neon genesis evangelion.

if u made homestuck fanwork 10 years ago and havent even made it since chances are I still remember and I love you for it.

NOT to say i have a secret stash of porn or anything. in general im more interested in the implication of sexuality or mature themes over any explicit depiction. like everything i draw is so softcore itd almost feel silly to make a nsfw acc for anything.

but im not rly jumping to post anything on main either bc i get the sense i have a lot of kids in my social media following. it varies from site to site and fandom to fandom but the themes in my work often circle around childhood, coming of age etc and in general i like stories about kids so the fandoms i draw for have a lot of kids in them. even stuff like IT (stephen king) which is about kids but isn't necessarily for kids.. there were a lot of kids in that fandom lol.

actually thats why ive been censoring swears in comics lately because the tmnt fandom comes across to me as a little young...IDK I've had MULTIPLE people ask me what "sodomize" means because of the joke in this post and I'm like... I Cannot be the one to explain this to you. you have to look it up on your own klfsdhsdg like i wouldn't be doing this if i were doing a comic for mgs or even homestuck wherein the characters textually swear constantly LOL but sometimes u gotta change tacks depending on the faces u see in the crowd yknow.

i HAVE been thinking abt drawing nsfw of sunspot/richard rider/kobak from x-men red just because that comic seemed to be really asking for it. who knows.. if the need rly arises maybe my separate account policy will change.

its rly more a matter of the fact that i havent read/watched much of any other iterations... im sure id like most lol. I like most things related to my interests regardless of quality. i rly like the marvel ultimate alliance games for instance. sometimes seeing my fave guy is enough he doesnt have to be well written LOL. i dont exactly have a wealth of free time tho thats the real impediment.

i did watch the 2007 movie on new years eve and found it quite charming overall. and i have read about 30-40 issues between the mirage and idw comics. still feels like im barely scratching the surface but i liked em. i rly want to read all the sophie campbell stuff bc i think her work is interesting. jason aaron will be a mixed bag i think lmao. i say as the worlds biggest Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) fan.

hmm this is kinda hard bc i feel like i naturally draw very loose and the hard part for me is tightening it up. maybe some suggestions tho...

1) hand excercises. i think its easy to forget this when many artists sit in front of the computer all day but drawing is a physical activity u do with ur actual...bodys...muscles lol. if u feel urself tightening up it might help to strech (any google search for "artist hand excercises" should yield good results) or do a page of loose practice strokes like..big circles. long lines. scribbles. that kinda thing. whatever feels good for ur hand. this is also just good to do as a general warm up before u sit down for any drawing sesh.

2) draw further away from the canvas. as a general rule...when ur painting traditionally you do the big strokes with your whole arm outstreched and a long handled brush. and when you do the details its smaller wrist movements and a shorter handled brush. so it might help to take a step back or push back from ur chair a little.. or hold ur tablet a little further away. and hold your pen further away from the nib.

3) change mediums / brush types. some brushes and mediums are more suited to loose sketching and some more inclined towards detail work. so changing ur tool could help. also! i personally have this problem where sometimes if im using a brush i feel really familiar with the pressure to make a "good" "finished" "perfect" drawing is greater... if i want to force myself to loosen up ill switch to a tool i dont use as often so it feels like the pressure is off. a lot of times for me this is switching from digital to traditional. but sometimes its switching from a small pen to a big marker. or a smooth pen to a textured one. or a nice brush to a shitty dried up marker.

but also every body is different so i dont think these tips will work for everyone. u should listen to what ur body and mind tell u and how drawing feels to you

well. scott mcclouds understanding comics and making comics are good books on the craft. i think i had to buy them for a class in art school once.

other than that idk just keep at it. comics are really laborious i think for a lot of people the hardest part is sitting down and doing it.

i think a lot of people have a very instinctive understanding of how to read comics and what they look like so whatever you think seems like good way to tell the story you have in mind, its probably right. if u get stuck, study comics that have done something similar. most people in comics are relatively self taught and actually it can be problematic bc you can tell when a lot of comic artists are all copying the same like 5 old white guys LMAO. but on the flip side if you make sure to reference and study broadly your comics will almost assuredly feel unique.

sorry im responding to this anyways. this is just a really nice ask. i like when people reference my older work bc i feel like sometimes theyre subtly implying it wasnt very good LMAOOO. but its true! at least compared to the work i make now ^^ and the fact that im still making art is whats keeping me from being embarassed abt how much of my old art just floats around online lmao im never ashamed to be growing and learning. isnt that a nice thought <3

what you said about maxiel fanfics with endgame lest4ppen, yes, I agree. someone mentioned this before, but maxiel is slowly dying on ao3 while it seems to be thriving more and more on tumblr.

for me it's 50/50 because I don't mind where I'm reading, but here we have more one-shots and pieces of WIPs (which is good because it means authors don't feel the pressure to turn everything into a 50k story, so they can just post their ideas even if it's incomplete), but I personally LOVE longer stories, so I would love to read more and more about every single one of them.

and personally I just don't like lest4ppen at all. I understand the need to tag maxiel because daniel is the bad guy and the "shitty boyfriend" or whatever, but I just don't like seeing those stories 😬

as someone who has dabbled here and there in this writing lark, for me there is a distinct difference in ao3 posting and tumblr posting....ao3 to me is formal, ur presenting something perfect, a fully-fledged story, a beginning a middle and an end (not in all cases but i just mean in general). most stuff i read on ao3 is fully-fledged nuanced ideas that the author has obviously spent hours of time crafting and experimenting with.

tumblr fic is inherently fun and blase and easier to throw out there into the ether and forget about really. tumblr fic doesn't need to follow grammatical rules or structure etc etc....it can just be a fun prompt game response or a quick lil fic that you had fun writing and wanna share with ur people?? both have purposes and both are enjoyable to write imo, just depends on what ur feeling and how much u want to expand on said idea??

when it comes to the maxiel of it all....idk how rude or pointed i can get here without getting into shit....so i'll try and word this gently....you have to keep the eco-system alive....i think comments and kudos are GREAT but honestly, if someone reblogs my fic with a fun few tags, i love that more, because in a selfish way, i might get 1 or 2 more readers from that because its going out to an even wider audience?? but its more than that!! engage with ur writers, message them on here and shout at them about their ideas, send them prompts, recommend their fic to ur friends...but i will stand by i think one of the best things you can do, if they make a fun lil post or graphic for their fic...reblog it...ur not only spreading the maxiel gospel, but ur also supporting that writer?? too many times on here i see people's fic graphics flop yet big blogs are leaving them comments on ao3 and look, EACH TO THEIR OWN and also i can sometimes be a bad reblogger dont get me wrong, but LIKE, there are some wildly talented authors on here who just need to be pushed into the limelight a little bit more??? idk if im wording this correctly, but sometimes there are fics that fall through the cracks because no one engages with them, and if ur an author who has put blood sweat and tears into that fic, ur not exactly going to be motivated to post another maxiel fic if u dont think ur going to get engagement from it (again, fic writing isn't necessarily about engagement or response, but let me tell u when i get a fun little comment or someone messages me about a fic i published, it inspires me to write more????)

maxiel is definitely alive and kicking, i follow some stunningly good maxiel authors, but at the same time, its about pushing forward those smaller writers as well and not thinking ur too cool for them???????????????

I loved to watch love bloom for Akaashi in the cracks of his tumultuous life, because he deserves everything <333

As the highest-rated Haikyuu fanfic on ao3, this work is a monument and will go down in Haikyuu history. That being said, it honestly did such a number on me that I think it deserves the hype. This hospital au revolving around Akaashi and Bokuto’s budding relationship is truly heartbreaking, to say the least. Read it at your own risk, and oh, you can find references to it under almost any Bokuaka related post.

The relationship dynamic between the two is very cute and well-done. I highly recommend this one if you are a sucker for some good, old Iwaoi, and I also love the side pairings. Just, overall, a really nice and satisfying read.

This fic is a favorite on tik tok, from what I’ve observed. I haven’t read it yet, but when people discuss it, they always commend the writing and the non-linear narrative. I have personally not read this one yet, but I have seen people rave about this one because of the emotional impact it had on them. It seems to me that the writing and emotions on this one are its claims to fame, so definitely check it out.

Talk about raved about fics, I have seen this one mentioned countless times on various platforms. This Iwaoi fic is set in a Vegas/Japan fusion setting, which immediately caught my eye. The premise of a heist fic also is probably what caught people's attention the most, because what is better than an Iwaoi heist fic (nothing. nothing is better.) I recommend this if you want a bit of a longer fic that had a tumultuous plot and a wild romance.

This fic follows Sakusa and Atsumu as they get stuck in the Philippines over quarantine. Honestly, if you want an enemies to lovers that really goes in depth into the trope, this is the one for you. One of my favorite things about this fic is the inclusion of the Filipino language, and I found myself reading all of the translations at the end. I would recommend this if you want a longer, feel good Sakuatsu fic. Also, lettersinpetals is a Sakuatsu classic author.

This fic is probably the notorious BDSM fic, which I’m glad because it portrays it in a very consensual and safe way. I’m personally not into that stuff, but I still was able to enjoy it for the plot and the amazing writing. I definitely recommend it if you are looking for something with BDSM components with some focus on their relationship dynamics too. I actually did really enjoy this fic, and I think the way their relationship kind of progressed backward was really, really good. Even if BDSM isn’t your cup of tea, I still recommend checking this one out and reading the tags to see if it is something you’re willing to give a chance too, because, for me, it paid off.

I have yet to read this fic. I am genuinely too afraid. Similarly to In Another Life, I constantly see people discussing to the degree in which this fic destroyed them, and honestly after In Another Life, I don’t think I could handle another one. This soulmates au has crushed so many people throughout the fandom that if you want someone to give you more detail on why it’s the saddest thing ever, you probably wouldn’t have to look very far.

This longer fic follows Kuroo, Kenma, and many others through a demon hunter/buffy the vampire-style universe, with magic, drama, and much more. I've never written fanfic before but I will try writing this summer after I'm done with uni. Your post just really inspired me to think about Buffy before S2. There is something about her that is less aware of death. She knows she'll die on a theoretical level but having actually experienced it changed her in a very profound way. I do have to rewatch the early seasons of the show however because there are a lot of details I don’t 100% recall. (warning: I am going to ramble about what I've been thinking so far, this is not very coherent)

I don't know if I want him to just show up in Sunnydale or if I want him with Dru in the place he originally was at that time. My initial thought was having him show up at the tunnel right before Buffy sees the master, but I'm not a huge fan of Spike saving her life a damsel at the last minute, so I think him being with and deliberately leaving Dru would mean a lot more, character-wise (Also I don't want the paradox of two Spikes running around the world). Of course, I do want Dru to give him some cryptic guidance, similar to the flashback we see in 'Fool for Love' (you're all covered with her) and the way she guides him in S2 when searching for her cure and the judge. I don't want to make her appear like a jealous harpy because I am in love with Drusilla's character.

As for how he travels back, the easiest is him making a wish, on accident by being sad in a demon bar, however I think I want him to make it a deliberate choice, going back and saving Buffy because I want S1!Buffy to react to that fact as well. How would she feel about a souless vampire trying to save her with the black & white stance she has in S1, influenced by Giles, Angel, Jesse, etc. So I think about him going through the trials he undergoes in S6 but with a different demand in mind (I doubt that particular demon is purely a soul granter, but rather a wish giver although I will have to double-check the wiki in regards to lore). I'll also try to establish some rules on time-travel relatively early on, maybe by having some character explain that the wish has erased that particular future and as such, there is no need to be concerned about altering the future.

I want Spike to deal with Dawn not being there. He puts 2+2 quickly together when realising the year, he can understand why she's not there, but he truly misses her and in some way needs her around, as a friend, a moral guide, etc. I want him to miss her because to him she is family (especially with how much they bond following Buffy's death) and to also sometimes need her around because while good, Spike certainly isn't perfect and still needs a bit of help when it comes to navigating morals.

Then we have Angel. While I don’t hate Angel, I certainly have some issues with him, that become more pronounced as the seasons go on, and with how he acts in later seasons of both BtVS and AtS. At first, he doesn’t know why Spike isn’t with Drusilla and wonders if she’s dead. I want to show that Angel and Angelus are not that separated and have some part of him mourn the potential loss, although only as a passing thought. Angel hasn’t turned into Angelus yet and doesn’t know about his curse in detail so I do think he is more detached from Angelus that in later seasons. I think in later seasons, this Jekill/Hyde act is more faked than S1/early S2 Angel. He still plays a big role (in addition to the council and Jesse) in forming Buffy’s ideas in regards to the humanity of vampires, but unlike canon, Spike is there to counteract it from early on.

Another wonderful thing about early seasons BtVS is that my girl Jenny Calendar is alive and I will absolutely take advantage of that fact to explore her character more and write some fluff between her and Giles. Maybe after Spike informs Angel in a very passive-agressive tone about his curse, he sees the Scoobies seeking advice and Jenny’s identity is revealed earlier than in canon.

I don’t know yet if I want Spike to succeed in saving Buffy because that means no Kendra/Faith and a very big change in Buffy’s demeanour, but on the other hand, I do wonder about how Buffy would tackle the emotional load of earlier seasons had she not conforted death so intimately.

I also don’t know how far I plan to write, whether it stops around S2 or if it extends all the way to ‘The Gift’ (it would be worth it just to reunite Spike with Dawn). I’m also not a huge fan of Spuffy in the early seasons because Buffy is still too young *cough* Angel *cough* so I would probably have to drag it all the way into S5 for them to escape platonic territory. If it does extend past ‘The Gift’ and Buffy doesn’t die, that also means no First Evil in S7 and maybe use that as an exploration of The Slayer and her origins, maybe a Council subplot.

There isn’t a plan for it yet in any way, shape or form but this is what I have in mind and if my writing is halfway decent I might just actually publish something like this. I’m thinking of cross-posting this on Ao3 & Elysian Fields but as I’ve never written anything before, so this might take a long time before I even plan an outline. You will be the first to know of any updates, promise. <3

So, September is coming up, and with it smutember, and we’re doing it again! (At least I hope you’re with me, lol).

Just like last year, it runs alongside to the official daily word prompts on the official smutember blog: Smutember is an event that runs all throughout September for all fandoms. The following is meant as an addition, not a replacement. If you want to do daily prompts, please use the official words prompts (linked above). However, since daily prompts can be a bit intimidating (especially for a fandom corner that’s 25+ years old like ours and people in it have busy lives), as the resident smut advocate in our fandom, I again customized an alternative that can still incorporate the official themes.

Just like last year, down below you have a list of TROPE AND THEME PROMPTS. They’re a remix of sorts of last year’s tropes, with some you’ve seen before and some new ones, meant to spark a variety of ideas. The idea is that with these you can post once (or twice) per week instead of daily.

Be it for fanart or fanfic or any other sort of fanwork, tropes can be combined, (and they can be combined with the daily themes too), whatever floats your boat. Also, specifically: This event isn’t Usamamo-centric only. I will reblog any Sailor Moon content of any pairing as long as it follows the rules! (See below)

Smut in fanfiction has been beautifully put as the subjectification of sexuality (as opposed to  objectification). So let’s celebrate this art form together! 7. Reviews: No one is forced to review. It can be uncomfortable to review a fic that contains sexual acts for any number of always valid reasons. Keep in mind, however, that much like a Burlesque dancer on stage, putting out sexual content can also be very intimidating to an author, and nothing is more discouraging than silence when baring yourself to an audience like this. That being said: Both Ao3 and FF have the option to review in anon mode. That means you have the option to remain anonymous while cheering the author on all the same. Just like the Burlesque dancer, your resident smut authors prefer to go on stage to loud cheering - it makes it all less awkward for them, and feels a little more like a big celebration!

hi!! so i just started writing fanfics, and i was just wondering -- how do you deal w/ numbers and the whole posting online thing? while i know that i should be writing for fun and stuff (bc it is!) and that im literally JUST starting out, BUT i just.. im someone who really heavily relies on validation, and when people don't really respond to my works well (or at all), i kinda just.. feel bad ): idk.. do u have any tips?

🥺 You came to me for advice on this, anon? 🥺 Thank you so much! I’m more than happy to pass on what I’ve learned and help out a new writer. I’ve been reading/writing fanfics on-and-off in some form or another for like ten years, but especially over the last four and am happy to share some tips. There are five main things that I think can help grow your follower count and the amount of feedback you get:

Don’t feel bad about wanting validation.

Consider the platforms where you post.

Write for active fandoms and popular characters.

Post frequently.

Interact with other authors.

This got rather long so I have more info under the cut about each of these. 

1. Don’t feel bad about wanting validation.

There’s this dumb trap that we all fall into as writers that tells us that validation isn’t important and that what matters most is our love of writing. While I enjoy writing, if my stuff got no notes and no feedback then I would definitely have gotten discouraged and quit writing awhile ago. Why would I put all that effort into something if no one seems to appreciate it? There’s nothing bad about wanting people to let you know they like your writing! I get so happy when I see someone left a comment on one of my fics or went crazy in the tags or sent me an ask. And when something doesn’t get any feedback, I get depressed about it and second guess whether I should have bothered writing it. So, definitely try not to get caught up feeling bad because you want people to tell you that they liked your work. 💕

2. Consider the platforms where you post.

I only use AO3 and Tumblr, so I can’t speak to any other platforms, but posting my writing on both of these are widely different experiences. Part of the culture of AO3 is giving kudos and leaving comments, so you’re more likely to get feedback there than anywhere else. I slowly built a following on Tumblr because of my AO3, even when I wasn’t posting anything on Tumblr itself. I would really recommend checking out AO3 if you’re not already on there! You do need to request an invitation, but it only took me a couple of days to receive one. I also have 8 invitations that I haven’t sent out, so DM me if you want one and I can give you one! 

I’m sure you’ve already seen posts about this, but the unfortunate thing about writing on Tumblr is that the feedback is absolutely minuscule and I’m not sure why. There’s this awful culture on this platform of people only liking content and not reblogging it to make sure it gets shared with other users. So, you end up really reliant on your own followers and the tagging system for your works to reach people. And the tagging system is a mixed bag. Sometimes your posts don’t show up in the tags or they will but only after a couple of days. If your post gets enough notes then it might go to the top of the search feed but then only for a few days at most. 

As a sidenote to readers, this is why reblogging is so important! Even if you only have five followers or don’t leave a comment, just reblogging it means a lot to content creators!

Here are some of the tips I have for the mechanics of Tumblr:

Use the tagging system, as imperfect as it is. I think Tumblr now reads the first 20 tags in your post, so use that to your benefit. I usually always tag at least: [character name]; [character name x reader]; [fandom]; [fandom x reader]. You can always also try things like: [character name genre], [fandom genre], [fandom fanfic], [character fanfic] as well.

Make sure your blog is easy to navigate and have a masterlist that’s easy to find. If a reader sees your content on their dash and decides to check out your other works, if they can’t find them on your blog then they’ll probably just leave.

Self-reblog as much as you feel you need to for your followers who may have missed your post. I self-reblog a lot for new content over the first couple of days and then even will do a few icymi self-reblogs later as well. It also helps to have a list in your profile somewhere of your recent updates so people can easily see if they’ve missed something. 

3. Write for active fandoms and for popular characters.

This might seem like common sense, but I think it’s something to keep in mind if you want to grow your follower count and your chances of getting feedback. And there’s nothing wrong with prioritizing a fic over another just because you want more feedback. I actually really want to write something for Chainsaw Man but the fandom is so small compared to the other fandoms I write for that I’m putting it on hold until the anime comes out. 

That’s not to discourage you from writing for characters or fandoms that are less popular -- I have a bad habit of writing for niche characters and fandoms. But I always see my activity spike when I write for more popular characters. Another tip is to try and figure out which characters people are thirsting over but where there’s a lack of fics for them. You’ll also find that some characters or fandoms just have louder fans than others. The stuff I’ve written for Gojo has gotten a lot of likes and notes, but not so many comments or much feedback. But the amount of asks and thirsts I’ve gotten for Naoya is wild. This is something you’ll learn over time as you keep writing!

4. Post frequently. 

This one is annoying because writers have lives and real-world responsibilities and we can’t just write 24/7. But when you’re trying to build a following, even if you can do a couple of short drabbles a week, you’ll really start to see your follower count and feedback grow. I’m not sure if people tend to like longer or shorter fics more, but overall people are just hungry for content and if you can give it to them on a frequent or at least regular basis then they’re more likely to interact, especially if you’re taking requests. 

But don’t prioritize writing and posting content at the cost of your own well-being. As authors we’re all guilty of this at one time or another, but your followers will understand if you have writer’s block or you need to take a step back! Taking care of yourself is more important than getting feedback or interaction. ❤️

5. Interact with other authors. 

Building relationships with other authors is a big one, but it’s also probably the hardest because a lot of us (me included!) are just so shy about reaching out! It’s like asking someone on a date or trying to be friends with someone you really admire. I know it’s scary to come off of anon (I still sometimes send asks on anon!), but authors recognize the names we see often in our notes and in our inboxes and we’re all really nice, I promise! 🥰 And I’m much more likely to read the fics of my mutuals and the people I follow than I am to be searching through the tags.

And I think there’s nothing wrong with reaching out to an author you love and politely asking if they’ll read your work. I think it’s totally okay to send something like, “I really love your writing and wanted to know if it’s alright if I share this fic I just posted with you? I’ve seen you thirsting over [character] and think you might like it if you have the time to read it!” The worst they can do is turn you down. I would never be upset over getting an ask like that as long as it was polite and the person was understanding that I might not have time to read their fic. But, I know that this is really scary to ask of someone. I’ve only done it once or twice, so maybe I don’t have any ground to stand on here, but I really think you should try it even if you need to send the ask on anon first.

Please just be mindful of an author’s rules before reaching out.

Another added bonus is that authors are more likely to reblog and give you feedback on the stuff you write because we’re in the exact same boat as you! We’re the perfect audience. 

And don’t forget...

Growing your follower count and reaching the level of feedback you want takes time. If you’re just starting out, don’t get discouraged. The more you write, the better you get so even if you’re not getting the feedback you want now, that doesn’t meant that you never will! 

And of course, pay it back in kind. Just how you want people to interact with your fics, we want the same. I always try to leave comments on the fics I read on AO3 and always reblog the fics I like on Tumblr and try to go wild in the tags so that the author knows that I loved their works.

i feel a lot. i’m not just going to reblog things for the sake of reblogging, especially when i’m not educated on the topic and could be spreading false information. when i think it’s important, i’m going to do my research and educate myself. i do understand the importance of signal boosting, so i can understand where the “you NEED to reblog” part comes from, but at the end of the day, social media is also (especially tumblr) a form of escape. let people have whatever blogs they want, as long as they’re not hurting or harming anyone.

hi hi hi. so I just got into the Hamilton fandom, I swear I am four years late where did everybody go, and, well. I am apparently a hamburr shipper. bcs that is my life now. anyway I saw your fic ifmlam and I swear it is my favourite of all the fics I've ever read (and trust me I've read literally thousands). I love it so so much, how do you write fics like that??? I cried about four times during the whole thing, I stayed up till 4am reading it even when I had to wake up at 7 because it is just. that. good. I could not stop thinking about it for days afterwards and ifmlam has just ruined me. I can't think of listen to Hamilton without thinking of ifmlam anymore.

on to my qursttion: is it abandoned? of course it's perfectly FINE if it is. don't let anyone tell u differently, your fic is YOURS and u are amazing.

the answer to the "is ifmlam abandoned" question is probably the worst possible one, which is pretty much "I do want to finish it, both for the folks that still want closure as well as it bothers to me have abandoned projects that are in the public eye/ already partially published, but also, it is last on my current writing projects list"

my current actually active writing projects list, kind of in order of priority, is

I'm literally three chapters away from being Actually Fully Done with the not-quite-first-not-quite-second let's call it 1.5th draft of an actual?? full?? original?? novel?? Opus which of course then goes out to beta readers and then gets who-knows-how-much edited and then maybe beta readers again if a lot does change and then a copyeditor my mom, my copyeditor is my mom, and maybe my little brother he's one of the betas but is very good at catching typos and then I!!! get to publish it!!!! which is the single thing I am most excited for!!!!!!!!! this should be closed up in the next week or two, and then take a while for people to actually read the draft and get back to me.

I really desperately want to finish my open-but-like-90%-written fic, which means we raise it up, the final chapter of to the bottom of the river bc I realized that it was kind of incomplete, and the second chapter of a buried and a burning flame because any more work there will need to wait until the author publishes the next book in the series. this should be closed up in the next month or two.

Speedwrite the draft of the second book of the Opus series so that hopefully by the time book 1 edits are happening, I have an almost complete draft of the second book. this is mostly me side-eyeing myself about taking nearly four years to write the first book, but that is solidly in part because I had so many other open projects which point 2 is about clearing that docket. this should be done in the next year.

And then just have my major projects be, at least until books 1-5 are written and published, books 1-5 of that because that is arguably the first major 'plot arc' of the series, so if I'm looking for a pause point on writing, that's probably where to stop.

There are two or three other short side projects (a weird fun second person short story tentatively titled witch-queen, a collection of four short stories Memoirs about a not-so-evil necromancer and the shenanigans he gets up to trying to rule a kingdom, working title Perfectly Normal Recipe Blog which is a collaborative project about a perfectly normal recipe blog that definitely doesn't include anything out of the normal) that will happen when they happen

There are other projects that are on the backburner -- The Numanok Files, a series of probably 12-15 short novellas about a mercenary/ bounty hunter esque person in space whose specialty is dealing with hauntings, but, like, 80% of their jobs is actually "you are effectively a space home inspector pointing out faulty wiring reacting to solar flares/ there's a weird alien fungus/ it's carbon monoxide okay change your atmosphere filters" and 20% of it is punching ghosts; there's a post-post apocalypse novel that I want to write that I know characters and general pacing and half the setting but need to work out the other half and figure out how much aesthetic I want to commit to; there's Strangeside7 aka spacerace book that is my reaction to how much I love how Redline the anime movie commits itself to "no we are about a race, like 60% of the screentime is just fully going to be an utterly ridiculous sci fi space race"; there's even a ridiculous YA trilogy that I would have to completely transplant the setting but might end up writing because the interplay between angel-physics and physics-physics was one of my favorite things in the world. and I guess the weird ridiculous technically a sequel series to ifmlam that was going to be published as original books that was basically me having fun with 'okay I fucking love star wars prequels old rotting space bureaucracy galactic republic style' except with seers and that also still might happen because it does have some of the coolest sci fi concepts and honestly I thiiiink that's all?

but the tl;dr of that timeline is I'm trying to finish a punch of projects Right Now, so that I can write books 2-5 of Opus, and then when I'm done that (which honestly, my average fiction-writing output is close to 100k a year. if I'm concentrating purely on one project, and writing books that are about 100k, we are talking four years. although my job situation is super up in the air in that period and writing might get put solidly on the backburner as I try to make it in academia, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) I will re-evaluate which projects go next, and that's when ifmlam is likely to come up for review.

I do not have any expectations that I will make it as an original author. I'm planning on posting all of my stuff online for free, but, like. it is incredibly difficult to convince people to try out even a piece of free and easily accessibly original work even if one has a huge following, I am a very small fanfiction author, and from what I can tell the majority of the people who are interested in my work are mostly interested in me finishing ifmlam. writing is a hobby for me, and while I'm writing mostly for me--and hence the for me bit at least for the next five years is pretty solidly going to be this series that I am deeply excited about and have sunk my heart and soul into every single aspect of--I'm human, and I don't really like shouting into the void, and I expect if I spend five years publishing to absolutely no response I will either stop writing for a while and do other things gods know my life is busy enough, return to fandom in general to write some other fanfic about whatever I get deeply into, or return to a work that I actually get response to. so ifmlam will probably start getting worked on a bit at that point one way or another. unless, of course, we are in the incredibly rare timeline in which I do make it as an original author, there are people who are deeply hyped for my original works and an actual demand for them, in which case as you may have noticed there are enough ideas there to keep me busy for a decade or two, and they will just get my full attention instead of fanfiction*. in this timeline, I will do what I was considering doing a few years ago, which is officially declare ifmlam otherwise abandoned and make one more giant chapter update which is a full and cleaned up outline of what I was going to write, interspersed with the scenes already written, and have ifmlam be given at least that closure.

*I want to make it clear that I very much love fanfiction and am proud to have been a fanfiction author and in my heart of hearts would keep writing it forever, I just also have a lot of ideas for characters and settings and magic systems and Aesthetics and I have been biting at the bit to write something that is //mine// and all mine and only mine for a while, I don't see original work as superior so much as there are a dozen fandoms that I am currently in and bursting to make content about except oops these fandoms currently only exist in my head, and I want to correct that

of course given how much as writing is my vent activity and I write what I'm in the mood for, there's a chance I'll feel ifmlam cravings before then, just... expect it to take a couple of years for an update, but also for there to be an update one way of another in a couple of years? but as for right now, I'm turning to original writing, because that is what brings me joy.

“Oh my gosh, Dion, is that you?!” Brendon chuckled and smiled excitedly.

“Yes! Guys! This is Brendon’s new number! Come on and get in on this!” Dion said, chuckling.

“Brendon!! Where the hell have you been?!” A stern voice came through the phone. “We were worried about you! You had Mom worried most of all!”

“Hehe, sorry Patrick… I broke my phone when I first came on, I got a new one but I couldn’t get any of the phone numbers I lost…” Brendon said, chuckling uneasily.

“Well, you bet your butt I’m gonna give you a hard time when we see you, that’s right Davey told us that he made you promise.” Patrick said as a matter of factly. “And don’t go breaking your promise.”

“I won’t… I always follow through with my word.” Brendon said, reassuring him.

“Hehe, Ivan, it’s good to hear your voice again! We have to catch up later!” Brendon went back to washing dishes, a bit quieter so he could listen to his brothers.

“Definitely! Actually, Mom and Davey dropped hints that you might be bringing people with you to Kyoto? Something about… ‘roommates’?” Ivan said, his smirking could be heard in his voice.

“Ivan, you’re gonna meet them when they get to Kyoto, I’m not spoiling anything.” Brendon smirked.

“Why?! Why can’t you tell me about your roommates? At least tell me if they’re single! Do they have brothers?” Ivan groaned. “Come on, you’re not usually one to withhold secrets!”

“That’s because it’s my secret and my surprise,'' Brendon laughed, “No Spoilers~!”

“Ugh, Brendon you are such a brat! Fine… oh! And someone wants to say hi to you!” Ivan handed the phone to the next person.

“Brendon? Is it really you?”

Brendon sounded like he was about to burst into tears when he heard that voice. “Will… oh my gosh… I’ve missed you so much… how are you?”

“Well, for starters, I’ve been missing you, and I didn’t know what happened to you. But other than that, I’ve been writing, doing alright for myself.” Will said.

“Will… I’m sorry for not contacting you sooner… I…” Brendon’s voice trembled.

“H-Hey, Brendon, I was just giving you a hard time, don’t cry… gosh, I keep forgetting you’re emotional… now I feel bad…” Will sighed.

“Don’t make Brendon cry!” Patrick called out, “apologize to him!”

“It was an accident! And stop shouting, you’ll wake up Mom and Shawn!” Will hissed.

“Oh? Shawn’s not awake? That’s odd, he’s usually up and about at night.” Brendon inquired, still a bit teary.

“No, he’s trying to adjust his sleeping schedule to match Kyoto’s day and nighttime hours. He went to sleep around 4pm.” Will said, “Sorry for making you cry.”

“No nononono… these are good tears… I’ve missed you all something fierce…” Brendon sniffled and chuckled.

“We all miss you too Bren, Shawn has been desperately trying to find a trace of an update from you on all your social media.” Ivan said, listening into the conversation next to Will.

“Yeah, my phone got smashed when I arrived, the headmaster gave me a new phone when I arrived at the school.”

“What’s the school’s name again?” Will asked, “Cause I heard about exchange students making their home at your college, they didn’t really say anything about who the 4 students were…”

“Uhh… The Royal Academy.” Brendon said, a drop of insecurity suddenly hitting him.

“The Royal Academy?” Will asked, Brendon could hear Will’s eyebrow raise.

“The Royal Academy of Arts?! I knew you were in Europe!” Ivan said excitedly.

“N-No, just the Royal Academy… it’s… down under!” Brendon was panicking, but not technically lying.

“So your roommates are Australian?!” Ivan exclaimed and then began to parade through the room. “I’m gonna meet some Aussie hunks, I’m gonna meet some Aussie hunks~!” Ivan chanted, dancing excitedly. “I am so jealous!!”

“I mean… they aren’t really Australian… it’s very complicated… and kind of disturbing…” Brendon was sweating, he just wanted to scream in the sudsy water that accumulated in the sink... Oh no, the sink!! “Ahh! It’s overflowing!” Brendon screamed.

“Brendon? Are you okay in here?” A voice asked, walking into the kitchen.

“A-Asmo?!” Brendon said, turning the faucet off, but slipping on the wet floor.

“Brendon?! Are you okay?!” Will asked frantically, on speaker.

“Bren!! You better be in one piece when you get here, cause I won’t forgive you for hurting yourself!” Patrick growled.

“Oh my gosh… that voice didn’t sound Australian… is that one of your roommates? Yoo-hoo~! Hi roommate!!” Ivan called out.

“Guys, you’re hogging my phone! Brendon, it seems you got your hands full, so we’ll let you go, we’ll see you in Kyoto! Good night!” Dion took over once more.

“Dion! We need these questions answered!” Ivan exasperated.

“No you don’t!” Dion grunted, hanging up.

Brendon was lying face up on the kitchen floor, sighing in many emotions. He sighed in relief because the brotherly interrogation was over, in frustration because he didn’t tell them the truth, in pain because of the slipping, and in embarrassment because he slipped in front of Asmo.

“Brendon! Oh my gosh, honey, are you okay?” Asmo asked, helping Brendon up from the floor.

“Yeah… nothing but a bruised ego, and wet pants…” Brendon said, snorted in humility.

“I’m glad you’re okay… who were you talking to? Oh my gosh, were they your brothers?!” Asmo reassured, then asked excitedly.

“Ehehe… yeah, those were my older brothers and my younger brother.” Brendon rubbed the back of his head, and then Asmo started laughing, “W-What?”

“Hahaha! I’m sorry, it’s just… you look so cute when you’re embarrassed!” Asmo said with a smile.

Brendon blushed and looked down, before getting his phone back, putting it in his pocket. It was a miracle it didn’t fall into the sink. “U-Ummm… how much did you hear?”

“Well… I know that you didn’t really tell them the truth about us.” Asmo crossed his arms sadly. “But, I get it. Some families might not know how to take us being demons and all… but, your family seems pretty cool. I know they also love you.”

Brendon looked down and frowned, he didn’t want to lie to them, but he didn’t know what else to say, who knows how they would react if they found out the reason they didn’t see him for a whole year was because he was basically stuck in hell? Not quite hell, but it still complicates the explanation. Suddenly he got a ping from his phone, he took it out and he froze, it was a few texts from Will.

“Hey, it’s Thoth, you’re a terrible liar, and I expect you to tell us everything the next time I see you.” The text read. “I hope you sleep well.”

Asmo read the text over Brendon’s shoulder and blinks. “Oh my… it seems that someone’s not as dense either…” he said.

“Will has always been a perceptive person… he can tell when I’m lying… but, I just couldn’t tell them over the phone… it would have made them worry more about me…” Brendon sighed. “I didn’t want them to worry more, they’ve been worrying enough.”

Asmo gave a small smile and pat Brendon’s back. “I don’t think it’s fair to lie to your brothers either… and for the record, we are far from being Australians.”

Brendon and Asmo both started to laugh as they began to wipe the water up off the floor. Asmo began drying the dishes as Brendon continued to wash the remaining ones. Afterward, Asmo took Brendon up to his room and began to help Brendon combat the dryness of his hands after the dishwashing. Brendon really did love and appreciate how helpful, and charming Asmo was. He was a social butterfly, loved to entertain, and thoughtful. Although he was a bit extra, a bit of a flirt, semi-competitive, and soaked in vanity every night before bed, he was the friendliest and most approachable of the brothers.

“Thank you for cheering me up, Asmo… and you’re right… I need to tell my family about you all when we get to Kyoto.” Brendon said.

“I agree. I just think it isn’t fair to your brothers. Especially if we might eventually become brothers-in-law~.” Asmo winked playfully.

Brendon didn’t say anything to that, instead he leaned in and began tickling Asmo’s sides, just what Asmo hoped for.

“AH! Nuuuhuhuhu~! It was only the truth! Hahaha!” Asmo wiggles around, trying not to pull away but instinct betrayed him.

Brendon chuckles as he had stopped tickling, and shook his head with a smirk before hugging him close. “Seriously though, Asmo… thank you for setting me right.” He said, kissing Asmo on the cheek.

Asmo smiles and tried to kiss Brendon’s cheek back. “Hehe~! Anytime. And as much as I would love to have you play with me all night, I got some plans for tonight. And you need to continue packing. After all, 2 months is a long vacation~!”

“O-Oh, that’s right! There’s still some things I need to pack… I’ll see you tomorrow, Asmo!” Brendon said, getting up from sitting on Asmo’s bed and leaving out of his room.

“See you sweetie~!” Asmo said, then reached into his bag and pulled out a packet. “Ugh… the things I go through for him… well, I think he’s worth it.”

Brendon was walking back down toward his room when he heard music coming from the library. He walked over to the library and saw one of the bookcases were open, revealing the stairs down into Lucifer’s study. Brendon sighed contentedly as he let himself walk down to the study and saw Lucifer sitting at his desk, doing some paperwork. He only got down halfway, when he heard papers calmly shifting.

“Brendon, what a pleasant surprise. What brings you down to my study at this hour?” Lucifer asked all suave.

“I was heading back to my room, and I heard music. You know if you don’t want me to come down here, it would do you well to close the bookcase.” Brendon chuckles.

“Who said that I didn’t want you down here?” Lucifer leaned in, interlocking his hands together, “Tell me, cause I will not have anyone put words into my mouth.”

“Hehe, I only assumed, but I guess I assumed wrong.” Brendon shrugged and sat in front of Lucifer’s desk.

“Well, I suppose when you first arrived here, I wouldn’t have wanted you to be snooping down here, but now it’s different.” Lucifer said, putting his pen back in the inkwell. “Have you made your decision on who to pick for the trip to Kyoto?”

“Umm… no… I haven’t… it’s pretty difficult to choose…” he said, biting his lip. “Everyone has cons and pros about going… and it’s challenging to weigh in on everyone , cause this will be 2 months in the human world…”

“I personally would not have a difficult decision. I would either pick Satan or Asmo, because they are the ones who usually don’t cause too much trouble.” Lucifer said, “Mammon and Levi wouldn’t be a good combo at all, Beel in the human world would be catastrophic, Belphie, you can never really know about him…”

“Well, I see all the good and bad they contribute to daily life. And I think they would behave as much as they can if I can stay frosty.” Brendon clenched his fists in determination.

“Beel and Mammon would drain your wallet very quickly.” Lucifer pointed out, “if not yours, then one of your family member’s.”

Brendon slumped into the chair and sighs. “This is gonna be a disaster, and I already promised my older brother I’d go… I just wish I could bring you all…That way I don’t have to worry about any of you getting into trouble...”

Lucifer blinked and smiled, before getting up and walking over behind Brendon’s chair, and he placed his hand on Brendon’s shoulder. “It’s okay, I’m sure it will work out, Brendon. You have a talent for having everything work out.”

Brendon opened his eyes and looked up at Lucifer, giving a small smile. “Well… I don’t know about that… I guess it all depends on the situation… Diavolo said his decision was final…” he said, but then he stood up gently with Lucifer, and they began to dance to the music that was playing in the study.

Brendon was swept off of his feet and away from his mile-a-minute-mind but Lucifer’s leading waltz. Lucifer had to be the most charming of the brothers, he was thoughtful, considerate, hardworking, and sensual when he wanted to show it. Even though he was a bit of a sadist, authoritative, stubborn, and sometimes had too much pride in himself, he knew how to make Brendon feel like the closest thing to a Prince as he could.

“You really know how to make a guy feel special, Lucifer…” Brendon blushed as Lucifer stepped back, both their arms extending out, and pulled in Brendon, who spun toward him, his kilt catching air lightly in the twirl until their bodies came into contact, and so did their gazes upon each other.

“It’s because you are special to me, Brendon. There aren’t many people in this world who have traded hearts with me.” Lucifer said, putting his hand securely on Brendon’s waist and dipped him back gently. “In fact, you are the only one who managed to.”

Brendon smiled and leaned up to give Lucifer a kiss while hanging on by Lucifer’s grip on his back. Lucifer leaned in as well to the kiss and they held it for a good second or two before a pounding knock at the front door startled the pair, into the upright position.

Brendon and Lucifer looked at each other. “Who could that be during this time of night?” Lucifer asked, eyebrows raised.

Brendon chuckled a bit. “Lucifer… It’s always night in the Devildom.” Brendon let go of Lucifer, “Let’s go see who it is, it might be important.”

“I surely hope so.” Lucifer said, walking with Brendon upstairs to the front door.

“Hehe, unless the Devildom has door-to-door sales-demons, or Cain’s Witnesses, I doubt it would be anything less than important.” Brendon said as Lucifer opened the door.

“That is where you’re correct, Brendon.” A proper voice came from the front porch.

“Barbatos? What are you doing here?” Lucifer asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Pardon the visit at such a late hour, but Lord Diavolo wishes to speak with Brendon,” Barbatos said, bowing his head slightly, arm over his chest, “Privately.”

1. what is their hair color?

Her natural hair color is black but has dyed it with purples, greens, and blues to give it this oil slick look. Surprisingly doesn’t take that much to maintain once you get it down well enough to do on your own.

2. what is their eye color?

Hypatia has hazel green eyes that take on more green color in the sunlight, but will look darker in most any other light.

3. how tall are they?

She’s 5′9″. :’’) Look at me making my female ocs a little taller each time.

4. how old are they?

She is 27 years old!

5. how much do they weigh?

I would put her in the 130-140lb(59-63kg) range as she’s got some muscle on her but weight can fluctuate based on activities going on and what she’s able to eat, but never goes beyond 140lb(63kg).

1. how old were you when you created them?

I am currently 25, though if I’m being honest she may have been sitting in the back of my mind much like Cat was since I finished the Bloodlines series for a third time ~23 years old but that’s a maybe honestly.

2. what inspired you to create them?

Honestly, self care really. I had thoughts about writing fanfic for the fandom but never did as I didn’t think I could match up to my own and other’s expectations but here we are long after the fandom has died and I want to write for it as I love revisiting the world Richelle Mead created. 

3. were they different when they were first created?

I can’t really say this for certain but initial thoughts about her and what she would be like I’m sure are very different than what they are currently at. Probably because I’m much better at creating OCs now than I was back then.

4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters?

It’s always fun to write something new and getting to play with her character and seeing how she’s coming out. So far I have only written like a little introduction to what the bigger plot would be and the absolute most self indulgent crossover as a one shot because locations just happened to be the same area.

5. what’s your favorite thing about them?

Honestly how different she feels compared to my other female OCs. She’s more self assured and tougher than Liz and Cat. There’s an attitude that just speaks differently in terms of just whether or not she follows the rules, how much she cares about other people, her wanting to have some kind of freedom, the intelligence that she doesn’t really want to pursue, and these parts about her feeling like an outsider that just hit differently than Liz and Cat combined. 

U: Underdog

1. have they been bullied?

She has yes in a pretty passive way. She is Mexican and doesn’t speak a ton of Spanish which to some means she’s not enough and shouldn’t even identify with being Mexican, or just saying she was so white washed. Beyond that there was some exclusion going on in her youth in that no one is really out right mean but they don’t really want to hang out with you or interact with you unless they have too. This may have been for the better as she wouldn’t have been able to handle the judgement of the amount of sex she was partaking in.

2. have they bullied anyone?

Intentionally no she has not. Sometimes though as people we do things that hurt others without really knowing that we are. These instances though are never spoken about or she was told and did her best to try and change her behavior or work with the person best way she could. Cat has never been someone to intentionally bully anyone.

3. have they been physically attacked by a bully?

Does Joseph count? No? Then no. She has never been physically attacked by a bully. 

4. have they ever been doubted?

People I think tend to doubt how angry she can get if she can get angry at all. Some even doubt she’s even capable of having her own way of thinking and this could do with the fact that she is tiny and people like to demean her as if she’s a child. She can hold a lot of self doubt though more so.

5. have they surprised people with being good at something?

On occasion yes. Some times people will doubt how smart she is and how when she really wants too is able to toss emotion to the side. The latter is something that she doesn’t like doing and this is something that is rare for her, but she can she just chooses not too unless the situation arises. 

Y: You

1. how old were you when you created them?

I created her almost a year ago(in like three days actually), so I was 24. I joke that she actually sat in the back of my mind for almost two years before that but I didn’t really know how to interact with fandom and then well covid happened and I just wrote like mad and tried out this whole experience.

2. what inspired you to create them?

I don’t really know. I just remember being gripped with wanting to write and I had tried to write some original fiction here and there but to no avail of liking it or continuing with them. I worked a night shift it was quiet and I opened a Google Doc and just started to write on my phone. It just happened and I don’t really know, the only other explanation is that I had played the game again just a while before that or I saw something and just went “Oh hey I could write something for that!”

3. were they different when they were first created?

Cat has grown(and shrunk) a lot in the past year. She was a very one note character that I just kind of threw to the wolves of fandom with little development. Since then though she has just grown to be this person that is complex and I have explored in so many different ways because of you all that I just. God I can’t even really look at my first writings with her because she feels so different now.

4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters?

I really do enjoy writing for her! I just get upset sometimes that she can be so hard to write for when it comes to canon because I want to present the accurate version I have of her in my mind to you all and especially when it comes to Dark Cat. There’s this certain way it feels and plays out that I worry all the time of it not showing the right way and it being inaccurate or feeling too much the same as other’s writing even though I know there’s no way for that to happen as each person has their own unique voice and way of writing. Cat is both so fun to write for and also so challenging for me and so I apologize to her fans that her content takes so much time to be produced.

5. what’s your favorite thing about them?

Her compassion. It is such a special trait about her that I love and I know makes her so soft as a person but it also translates into Dark Cat in that she still doesn’t lose that compassion, it just shifts in how it shows. Cat wants to see the world be a better place at the end of the day as she cares about other people more than herself and even when she goes dark that is the ultimate goal still. She wants to see the county free of the violence that’s starting to get worse and if the only way to make that happen is via killing the ones perpetuating it then so be it. You can still really see it also in the way that she treats the bodies after the fact, she buries each one with care and a headstone of some kind with their name as they were still a person even if she holds a hatred towards them.

this post is hideously long, so answer under the cut!

so, on characterization: it is mostly a matter of what would they say, rather than what you want them to say. the joke about "the characters do what they want to" instead of what the writer wants is pretty much true if you want them to be in character lol (that's why sometimes a little bit of OoC isn't too bad)

checking the source material is the most important thing: look at prior similar interactions the characters have had and how they reacted

this is kind of hard with LIPxLIP, as there aren't that many translated texts about them but with honeyworks the most canon and reliable thing to use as reference are the mvs. the mvs are drawn in a way that can pretty much be understood even if you don't have the lyrics, and sometimes it's even better if you can't read them, to properly focus on the images better

look at their expressions closely: while aizou is always explosive in his anger, yuujirou often has a more indifferent expression. so, when they fight, aizou is probably the one to blow up first while yuujirou maintains his composure better. it's kind of the classic "this was only a brief passing panel but i am going to expand on it" www

but the thing about fanfiction is that it's always a bit of a character analysis in itself. you don't start writing having already a color-coded folder of possible situations and reactions a character would have for each setting. you just throw the characters in a scenario and then think from there onwards, and eventually you'll be able to have the folder of situations and what you think their reactions would be like. (though, this links back to the prior point, if the characters have gone through a similar situation in canon, use that as guide! plus, finding little references to canon when reading is always fun)

for general writing, i'm going to mostly talk about my own experiences and process! i'm in no way a professional though

the basic is reading a lot. not just books but also fanfic. in fact, since you're writing fanfic, i Encourage you to read fanfic. even if your story ends up novel length, the way of treating the story is different from that of an actual novel. for example, because you're working under the premise that everyone knows the characters already. the general style of fics is different as well.

in fact, the style is the main reason i'm saying this slfkslfkslkf

read a lot of stuff and find a style you like. think of it as sewing together pieces from here and there to make a frankenstein amalgamation: this person's metaphors, the comparisons from here, the descriptions from there

personally, i adore the "long one-shot with a long title formatted (like this)" fics that are mostly feelings and descriptions and as little dialogue as possible, and some that occasionally play with the "show don't tell" rule, and some months ago i read a book whose descriptions amazed me because you could feel what the character was focusing on the most, rather than being general descriptions of the situation (i actually have a lot of thoughts about descriptions but that's a post for another day). but also i really like dialogue and plot-driven stories, descriptions can get boring and before trying to break rules, you have to be really good at following them

but, let's go step by step: developing an idea

for this i'm going to mostly reference the multichap i finished a while ago as an example

i started with just a few vague concepts in mind: non-idol au with aizou who does some sport and likes music but is insecure about his singing and yuujirou who does some music related thing and encourages him to sing in a way that's somehow related to the hozier song to noisemaking (sing), because it's what inspired me to write in the first place

then, from then onwards i wrote down what would happen in the first chapter of the story bullet-point-list-style, including things like the roommates part or the clubs the boys were in (at first yuujirou was in the choir club lol the change was a last second decision that idk why i took) and then bits of dialogue here and there that would be The Turning Points. those first dialogues were for the fight at the end of ch 1, the apology-date in ch 3 and then some vaguely unused ones for the "yuujirou encourages aizou" part, as those were the first key moments i thought of

because, since it's enemies to friends to lovers, an important aspect was character development

not all fics have character development bc not all of them are long enough (if you're aiming for short and sweet then there's no need). but if they do, i recommend you write down how the character was at the beginning of the story and then how they were at the end and then fill in the middle later, think of what those key turning points that made the character change were (the more little things you add, the more gradual it'll be)

samishigariya illustrates this very nicely: the song starts and finishes with the same lines, but the ending ones feel more light-hearted. the beginning has pre-arisa ken and pre-getting-along-with-yuujirou aizou, when they were the lonely people the title mentioned, and the ending, when they're not lonely anymore. the in between can be seen in depth during the other songs: ken before arisa was a playboy who didn't take love seriously, but after meeting her he realized that games were not all there was to love; and aizou used to be quite cranky and high-key a loner, but then he "meets precious things and knows of love". i will not elaborate on that because this isn't an aiyuu post but Oh You Know

for the fic, aizou would go through that same process, more or less: someone who doesn't really form meaningful connections with people but who, in the end, would end up having quite a bunch of people who care about him as his relationship with yuujirou advances too

since the relationship was the main focus, i wrote a very simple outline for how it would develop throughout 5 hypothetical chapters that was just: 1. civil w each other but mostly bad > 2. bad > 3. half friends > 4. pining > 5. date

and then with that in mind and the bullet point list, the final basic outline ended up like this:

there were scraped ideas and ideas that made it in later, but i believe having a simple outline, a bare skeleton to add things to, is important. stories need continuity, development requires a prior buildup

it's especially important in multichapter fics where you post as you write, you need to have a more or less clear idea of what's going to happen because you can't ignore scenes you've already posted

shorter stories don't need it as much, you can think as you go, but it's still helpful to know where you're going with things to avoid getting stuck

and, on getting stuck: don't be afraid of deleting things. if you can't figure out how to continue things, then delete the situation and start again. it might feel like you'd be wasting time but in the end, it is so much better than being stuck on the same scene for weeks

in fact, you don't have to write in order. jump to the next scene and you'll figure it out later. you Can write the scene you want to write and then build everything else around it

it's normal to write a scene and then realize it would make more sense later in the story, or that it would be better if you added another scene earlier, or sometimes you just find it easier to jump from one part of the story to another. rely on your outline to keep track of what you've written, what you have left to write and what's the best way to arrange your story. make your story understandable

which bring us to editing

there's a lot of much better posts on editing stories, but yeah ctrl+f is your best friend: don't repeat yourself too much. and be sure to vary sentence and paragraph length, as well as sentence structure, to give dynamism to the writing

now, i've mentioned before the show, don't tell rule, but i'm going to talk a bit more about it because it's quite important

once again there's a lot of posts that explain more in depth what it is, so i'm not going to expand too much on that, but, very basically, try to avoid things like "then some time passed and they became friends". explain it: what happened exactly? how did they become friends? if it's important, show it to us, instead of summarizing

since things like these make the story longer, it also gives room for more development and proper explanation for things that happen

for example, the fic was originally going to start with them already in the room, and the whole situation would have been explained in a single paragraph somewhere, but by actually adding the scene where they first arrive to the dorms and argue with the lady at the main desk, the story flows better and it let me actually describe their first meeting

and uuuhhh i think that's all? this took super long to write i hope i didn't forget any super basic stuff lol

1. Why did you choose your url? i’m female joey belladonna. it’s also one of the rules of the internet, rule 63: “to every male character or man, there is a female counterpart, and vice versa.”

2. Any side blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them. an art blog (badgalnirvhannah) and two fic blogs (grunge and metal fanfics; feverinfeveroutfic)—i’ve had to close a couple from the lack of attention and also because i did the smart thing and put my writings on the archive.

3. How long have you been on tumblr? long time lurker, but i started in real late 2014. took a long as hell hiatus in october 2016–i mean it was long, too, it lasted almost two years. i often think of doing it again.

4. Do you have a queue tag? yes! “promisqueueous”, a play on “promiscuous”. it’s a self-roast and a nod to my growing up in the loose 2000s.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place? i wanted to share my art and be a part of something. if my lengthy breaks are indicative of anything, it’s that it doesn’t seem to be working and i’ve really been wondering if it’s even worth it on here anymore. i’m even actually genuinely surprised by the fact people follow me and i can’t picture anyone even wanting my art or putting it in their house or whatever. yeah, tumblr, the biggest site that supposedly embraces artists, writers, and creators, has never validated an artist, a writer, and a creator.

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp? sweet alex. that man is love—that drawing is also like medusa’s head on athena’s shield because every time he pops up, everyone is quick to jump on me, and he’s a controversial guy to boot.

Why did you choose your header? it’s the bay area strikes back! testament, exodus, and death angel! their last gig before everything went to hell (they were over in brussels) and they all had to bounce like a few hours after—and alex and eric were freaking out because chuck and gary holt both tested positive for the virus and flights were getting canceled left and right. i have it up as a reminder that life is precious and every moment counts.

Winter! Even if I’ve never experienced snow or winter before, the whole idea of snow is just really fun and endearing to me. One of my bucketlists is to see snow in real life. I think it has to do with the fact that I’ve always been this person to prefer the cold over heat.

I’ve always been here! Just not in kpop tumblr. I’ve since deleted my old accounts and shame  but i came back to write. It’s always been so stress-relieving to me, to write without any expectations on my back because I’m thinking about grades or a competition. Also Soobin simping is a daily thing and I gotta release it somewhere man

are you happy with where you are in life right now? why or why not?

Yes. I may not be the richest or the prettiest, or smartest or whatever, but I have a good family that loves me. I have good friends that support me and I have TXT and BTS to help me cope when things get overwhelming. I have a job that gives me a little bit of income (it’s not too common for college students here to get jobs like in the US, most of them just focus on acads) and all the means to continue my education amidst the pandemic. So really, I’m grateful for where I am now.

to see the boys in real life but for it to happen only once in your lifetime, or to meet the boys via online fan meeting as many times as you can in your lifetime? why?

Why do you have to do me dirty cj,,,,, prolly online. I may not get to hug them or anything but I get to talk to them still. As may times as I want to. be prepared folks, i am, what one might call, an ~✨oversharer✨~

1) i love writing in diaries. i love love love it. i think i have around seven ongoing diary-like things that im writing in whenever. they all have a different vibe in terms of what aspect of my life i write in them. (i also sometimes write essays for myself, but only because i need a way to organize my thoughts in full. it rlly helps.)

2) i taught myself how to raise my left eyebrow. idk if thats thrilling or out of the ordinary at all, but when i was younger i really wanted to be able to raise one eyebrow at a time, so i decided on my left eyebrow and managed it. unfortunately, later on i learned that i could just naturally do my right eyebrow, but it was too late by then😔 its not easy being the dumbest bitch around but someones gotta do it, i guess. and! at least now i can raise both eyebrows individually, so who’s really the clown?

3) for some reason, for one/two days every year i suddenly get this urge to?? watch as many documentaries about ocean creatures as possible??? its so fucking weird because its been happening for the past? 7 years? where i just wake up and crave learning about sharks/octopuses/whatever. and then the next day its gone as if it never happened. this occurs EVERY YEAR its so off-putting considering nothing i ever do coincides with it at all????

4) i was not made for reading. i can read fanfic most of the time - but almost nothing else. this is kind of a new thing, and its despicable, i know, but i can not bring myself to sit still or focus for long enough. i literally read 2 sentences and have to check 4 social media sites, watch 18 videos, drink 6 cups of tea and then do that again after the next 2 lines. my friends clown me when i say watching tv is easier than reading, but what can you do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

5) ive had white hair (strands, obvs sksnsk) since elementary and a piece of my soul dies every time one comes into view.

im kinda want to get into this sort of thing so is it okay to ask u a few questions? if not just delete this, but here goes? would u reccomend game maker studio 2, and how hard is it to use in ur opinion? and is there anything u wish u knew at the beginning of making ur fangame?

aw anon you’re so sweet! don’t worry about asking about this, its really exciting to make games and trying new things! i would not say i’m an expert, and i wouldn’t even say i know gml like. at all. i just understand a how the code is used, but now what the code itself is or what to type exactly. like, i understand the theory more so than actually doing it. which is, eh, fine? i’m getting by, and i’m still learning. i’ve only been using gms 2 for 2 months now.

also, i’m using a fangame engine! i feel its kinda like cheating lmao, but its just meant to be a framework to build your own thing off of. and i still need to learn gms2 to use it, and i plan on doing more advanced and complicated things (ie: changing how battles even work structurally.) so. i’m not good at gsm2 yet, but uh, really once you understand coding its not any harder than i’d imagine w/ other professional game engines. compared to unity, i like this better because it seems built on the idea of making 2d sprite games. its SO much more simpler and the userface (while. i’m not a fan of how it has its workspace but whatever) is simple and easy to grasp.

i can’t say for certain if i recommend game maker. its very pricey and doesn’t go on sale often. (big sales i mean, it goes on 15% somewhat frequently) i really, really recommend doing your research first. 

so here i talk about what game engines i’ve used over the last year. (also i hear Godot is good!)

at the end of that post i said this: “TLDR; figure out what kind of game and story you want to tell/make. i could of saved a year’s worth of work if i just sat myself down and realized i wanted to make a completely new fangame separate from my old blog stuff. and that i wanted to make an rpg specifically.“

and so! past me has good advice. figure out the scope and what story do you want to tell. with AL, I know it has 2 chapters, and rn i’m only concentrating on chapter 1. chp 1 has 7 nights and one area where you fight enemies. its very story/character driven and is more so like. a deconstruction of the rpg genre than an actual rpg game. (i know that the word deconstruction is over used as hell, but it is what this is.)

it builds off the themes of the original, while focusing on things that i want to focus on and develop. ut, at it’s heart, is about stories and grief, i’m just taking it to a different extreme and angle.

uh, anyway, i really wish i knew what i wanted to make and understood the source material more and what i wanted to make. i’ve. thought really really hard over what UT means, what message toby was trying to convey, how he did it and what I thought about it. understanding what YOU want from and for your project is the most important thing. WHY do you want to make this? WHAT do you want people to feel and think about when playing? or even, after playing? it doesn’t have to be super deep either.

so, figure out what you what to make, and then you can work on the how. really plan your story, but honestly i wouldn’t recommend planning it in super big details right off. also, super helpful to have a friend help you brainstorm and plot check things for you. (shout out to my friend the sniffer

anyway, don’t plan things TOO detailed because things are GOING to change no matter how well you plan! just try to get get an outline done, then rewrite it 5 more times and then MAYBE you’ll be ready to tackle a more detailed version. then write it 5 more times. i can’t stress enough how important planning is, and how you shouldn’t expect everything to work out even on draft 10! things will work, and when they do, draft 10 is going to look like bad awful nonsense cause you’re at draft 20 now and everything is much more coherent and better. games aren’t written or consumed all at once on the fly. its not a piece of fanart, a fanfic, a comic. its not updated more than once. its out, and then its just out. plan for it.

and real quick, don’t worry about art assets! depending on how you do the art, that’s most likely going to change and its going to be polished LAST. i could go more into how you should think of art when game developing, but thats another topic. just. honestly use shitty art assets and worry about it later.

second advice: start SMALL!!! i feel i should of done this, and frankly i probably will have to sit down and do this lmao, basically, you should make boring small games to learn the basics. I know, i know, nobody really wants to recreate asteroid when you got big ideas of making stories and animations u wanna make. but like. you really need to figure out how the program works and how the code works in theory and practice.

ok so like, think of coding like this. i got this from a skillshare video series, so uh. i’m going to retell this but in a shittier and likely less nuanced way. sorry

ok so imagine. you’re telling this guy who is trying to get to Gary’s house. now, Gary’s house is just down the road, few houses down, now, you can tell this guy that and he’ll likely find the house just fine. but if you’re telling a robot it’s not going to understand what “down the road” means. what road? how long? it needs instructions that are simple and work in a language it understands.

so you tell the robot “go down two houses, stop at sign until x seconds pass, turn right, go forward 1 house, turn ect. stop at house, ring doorbell. IF Gary answers, go inside; ELSE: do not go inside, wait;

so this what i mean by understanding the theory behind the code rather than the code itself. yes there’s complexities and differences in each language, but they’re ALL based on the same concepts. different program languages are less like different speech languages, but rather different dialects of the same. (uh, like us english vs uk english) its just different rules and “spellings” of the same core concepts.

next advice: don’t be afraid to ask for help! but also! do so within reason! if people are OPEN for helping, be sure do so in the right environment and within what time works for them. compensate people for the time and effort if you can. ALWAYS try to figure out the solution yourself first. often with coding, it can be a simple solution that you could of thought of yourself if you took the initiative to. google is your friend, youtube is your friend! (ok, youtube isn’t, but in this case! yes!) the answer might not always be easy to find, and its perfectly fine to look for help but its good to at least try on your own first!

speaking of which! LEARN LEARN LEARN! be ready to devote A LOT of time to watching and reading about game development. this goes to every game making program, not just gms2. i watch. so many videos on gms. i rec having the video play at 1.5x or 2x speed to cut down time. obvs you still need to retain the information, so speed might be not a good idea then. and its REALLY GOOD to pause and type out the code and follow along. but its also good to just understand the concepts, and theres no harm in rewatching once you’ve understood it  better at a different speed.

things WILL click and work out for you, and its going to be a very time consuming and long journey to get there. i LOVE making this game and telling this story but I also had no idea what i was getting into! and i probably will have more advice once i’m further in, (i’ve only used gms 2 for 2 months!) but thats the best i can say for now! i hope you pursue your dreams and start making things!!! you can do it!!! 

the best time to start is yesterday, the second best time is right now! even if you put a little effort into it everyday, you’ll  build up progress and you can learn SO MUCH over time and theres this whole world of possibilities out there! the world NEEDS your story and your perspective, and i think creating it in anyway you can is necessary for humanity! your work will mean something to someone someday, and i am so excited for you to start your journey!
