gale & karlach
i think out of all the dynamics between the companions, i've come to enjoy gale and karlach the most over my time with the game. karlach especially bc she's the only one who genuinely seems to care about and for gale.
she repeatedly checks in on him after the orb reveal and doesn't turn it into a joke about slurping carrots, or sipping wine, or wanting him to be gone entirely from the group.
not only does she advocate for him to stay three times, depending on which dialogue path you pick:
gale's background story reveal & the reveal about the netherese orb
Tumblr media
Karlach: Come on. We all have our secrets - and our risks. If Gale leaves, we might as well disband completely. - Karlach: Absolutely. We're all risky in our own ways. We stick together anyway. Right? - Karlach: If having dangerous, otherworldly objects stuck in your skin is wrong, then Gale and I both have to go. We're not really splitting up, are we?
but she's also the only one who repeatedly asks him throughout the game how he is doing, to make sure how he's faring, both in general and with his debilitating condition:
act 2 - shadow-cursed lands banter
Tumblr media
Karlach: Doing all right, Gale? Gale: Oh, you know... Still alive and kicking, despite being surrounded on all sides by an endless manifestation of darkness and decay... devnote: Almost with a sigh. That's just how things are - Grim humour to it. Karlach: I feel it too. Here if you need a pick-me-up.
act 3 - after mystra stabilised the orb
Tumblr media
Karlach: How's the orb treating you, Gale? Gale: Oh, quite well as a matter of fact. Since it was stabilised, it's been humming along nicely. Gale: I have noticed one adverse side-effect. I seem to be losing hair in some, er, unexpected places. Karlach: I can only imagine.
i think it really bears repeating/stressing that no other companion does this. not one checks in on gale like karlach does, after his affliction has become known to his companions - with the exception of the protag potentially.
karlach also arguably has the strongest reaction in response to mystra's demands in act 2, showing again her care for gale, as well as her protective side:
Tumblr media
Karlach: Aw, was that Gale's granddad? Player: That was Elminster Aumar - the most famous wizard in the realms. Karlach: Huh. Doesn't ring a bell. But all right! Must've had something important to say to Gale, if he came all this way. Good news, I hope. Player: I don't think it was. It turns out Gale has an explosive bomb in his chest - and Mystra has asked him to use it to blow up the heart of the Absolute. Karlach: Whoa, now. He's got a... well, I guess that would explain a little, but... Mystra... I mean, this is a lot to take in. Karlach: What's he going to do? - Player - Option 1: I think he's going to follow through with it. Karlach: Fuck me. There's devotion, and then there's stupidity. If the god of magic can't handle this without sacrificing Gale, she's no god at all. - Player - Option 2: I don't think he'd do that to himself, even if Mystra commanded it. Karlach: Good. I'm one hundred percent sure there's another way to bring down this cult. No true god would ask such a thing from her faithful. That's for certain. Karlach: Poor Gale. He must be in bits after hearing that. I'll distract him. Tell him I haven't read a book since secondary school, watch his face melt off. - Player - Option 3: I'm not sure. I think he's of several minds. Karlach: Well, tell him to pick the right one. Better yet, I'll do it. Fucking wizards, man! They always need help picking the simple, obvious option. Karlach: If Mystra can't think of another way to stop the Absolute than sacrificing Gale, she's no god worth worshipping. I'll say that to Gale - in, you know, gentle terms. - Player - Option 4: You know that bomb in Gale's chest? Mystra has asked him to use it to explode the heart of the Absolute. Karlach: She what?! Is she mad?! - Player - Option 5: Don't worry about it. Karlach: Karlach doesn't worry, she acts. So if Gale needs me, now's the time to tell me.
i particularly like that last response bc it really echoes throughout her relationship with gale ("karlach doesn't worry, she acts. so if gale needs me, now's the time to tell me.").
their banters are often playful, but also genuine. both karlach and gale tease each other, they joke with each other, showing how comfortable they are with each other despite their many differences, but there are also moments of understanding and care between them, allowing them to emphasise with each other:
Tumblr media
Karlach: Man, it's good to be home. First round on who? Gale: She who thirsts buys drinks the first. devnote: Like it's a well-known saying Karlach: You won't pin me down with a rhyme, wizard! devnote: Jockeying with Gale (prob supposed to be Joking with Gale) Gale: She who declines gets the worst of the wines.
Tumblr media
Karlach: Just when I was getting used to the sky again... Gale: Fear not, Karlach. Sun, moon and stars will still be there waiting for us. devnote: Reassuring Karlach: Meanwhile, this place is pretty spectacular, isn't it? Gale: No book or painting could ever do its strange beauty justice. But perhaps our stories might, when we return to the surface. devnote: Agreeing with Karlach, enjoying the sense of wonder as you explore
Tumblr media
Gale: I've always felt flames to be a rather perfect expression of love, Karlach. Gale: Passionate, primal, capable of bestowing the most life-affirming comfort, or inflicting the profoundest damage. devnote: Listing the qualities of fire, Romantic, indulging in the poetry of the image Karlach: That's... pretty nice. Never thought about it like that. But now I will.
Tumblr media
Karlach: Wouldn't mind a dancing axe of my own. Gale: A simple movement charm wouldn't be too hard to apply to such an object. I could conjure one up for you if you like? Karlach: Yes! I like! Gale: Very wel then. Once the city is saved, Karlach's Kinetic Cleaver will be first on my list.
Tumblr media
Karlach: So, Gale - got any book recommendations for me?devnote: With concern Gale: You can read?! devnote: Taking the piss - knows full well Karlach can read, and that she's always claimed not to enjoy it Karlach: Very funny. Yes - I can read. School put me off big boring tomes. Sometimes I wonder what I'm missing. devnote: Friendly rather than flirtatious Gale: Say no more - I'll find the perfect book for you. I might even lend it to you from my library in Waterdeep. devnote: Jumping on the opportunity to give a book recommendation (a favourite hobby) Karlach: Ooh! Something with magic, please. And no devils.
even at his most vulnerable moments, karlach is there to support him:
before the stormshore tabernacle audience with mystra
Tumblr media
Karlach: You can do this, Gale. And I'll be right here when you're done.
she allows herself to be protective of him and get angry on his behalf not after when it comes to mystra, but also when he is potentially kidnapped by orin:
karlach's reaction to gale being kidnapped
Tumblr media
Karlach: That bloody freak won't get away with this. That's my wizard she took. And we're going to get him back.
once again, it's a good callback to her previous line: "karlach doesn't worry, she acts. so if gale needs me, now's the time to tell me."
she's willing to be needed by him - and he does need her. whether that is as a friend, or (if you chose to play so during an origin pt) as a romantic partner. it's a lovely dynamic either way.

You know what I really like about Adrien distracting himself from horrible events and trauma by always focusing on his future wife Maribug and trying to woo her?
It's that once Gabriel gets caught and revealed as Monarque, Adrien isn't going to run away to idk London because he can't cope with the pain.
Naw.
He'll be persistent to finally wed his Lady immediately because why face all the bad shit when you can vibe with your badass, unhinged and thirsty wifebug?

Wait pika do you really mean don't ask you about predictions? Some of my favourite Tumblr posts of all time are your thoughts, theories and predictions! :((
Please sleep also, but when you can let us know what's going on in that head of yours. I'm desperate for someone with a brain cell to discuss this chapter! (Twitter is a cesspit)
I mean, you can ask lol. I just sometimes get these vague "any predictions?" asks and it's like, YES. YES I HAVE SOME. BUT IT'S FAR TOO MANY TO JUST LIST LIKE THAT, CAN YOU PLEASE BE MORE SPECIFIC?
Okay, I'll tell you about my thoughts.
Tumblr media
This is a new frame of the scene in chapter 1. This perspective doesn't exist as a drawing in chapter 1, but we know pretty easily what this scene was about. Why is Horikoshi putting the scene here though? Why does this scene have the line "Let go of One For All"? Why not draw Kudou saying it, or Izuku's reaction to it? Is it because this is a memory of the scene where Izuku receives OFA, so giving OFA up is coming around full circle to this moment again?
I don't think so.
This is not the moment where All Might proclaims "you are worthy of inheriting my power" and Izuku looks up in shock. This is the moment where All Might says the words Izuku has longed to hear his whole life: "You can become a hero."
We're coming back to this moment now because the emphasis is on Izuku's upcoming choice. This is about the MEANING Izuku places in OFA. All Might told Izuku "you can't become a hero without a quirk," then shows up to tell Izuku he can become a hero...by giving him his quirk.
To Izuku, letting go of One For All is sacrificing his greatest dream. He believes by giving up One For All, he can no longer be a hero. Even though there have been moments where All Might let on that the reason Izuku deserves to have OFA is because he's already a hero, Izuku never seems to internalize that answer. He thinks his heroism is tied to being the bearer of One For All.
No one has ever told Izuku he can be a hero without a quirk.
I said before I had a big guess about why Katsuki's memory was wiped at the end of Heroes Rising. Notably, he is allowed to remember most of what happens. His memory cuts off from the moment Izuku passed One For All onto him. Do you remember what Katsuki said after he got OFA?
"This is the end of your dream then, too, huh?"
That's the last thing he ever says on the matter. Sure, it's the moment where Izuku answers with "It's okay if it's you" and all that, but Katsuki never responds to that. We don't know what he's thinking about this moment.
The only clue we have is the fact that he accepted the quirk from Izuku, and how he reacted to that. He seems quite upset by the prospect, but in the end he relents and accepts OFA willingly.
Perhaps the issue he is grappling with in his heart in these moments is not the fact that he has to inherit OFA but that Izuku has to lose it. Which means...the reason he loses his memory is because his reaction is important. It's a moment we will have in the manga, which makes it a spoiler.
We've never heard Katsuki tell Izuku what he thinks of quirklessness now. All he's ever told Izuku is that way back when, he thought it meant Izuku was supposed to be beneath him. He doesn't even tell Izuku why he felt like somehow Izuku was actually above him.
Tumblr media
He's also only ever told Izuku his actions were correct ever since he received One For All, nothing about before.
Tumblr media
I think Katsuki's reaction to Izuku losing OFA--which could come before the final battle or after--will have to be about his feelings regarding Izuku's quirklessness. I think Izuku is going to be incredibly hurt by losing One For All because he'll think he has lost his dream, and Katsuki is going to have to set him right, because only Katsuki knew who Izuku was before he had One For All. All Might is the only other person who had at best a glimpse of Izuku.
I think Katsuki has been coming to terms with just how special Izuku is, how heroic he always has been, and that he's the only one capable of acknowledging it in a way Izuku will be able to hear because he knew Izuku before he got One For All. I think he's been grappling with this possibility ever since DvK2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think he grapples with it again in Katsuki Bakugou: Rising.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the same way Izuku saw something great in Katsuki that he wanted to cling to so he could see what Katsuki would one day become, Katsuki has always seen something great in Izuku, which awed and scared him. Their greatest divide was in not knowing what greatness the other saw in them. Katsuki has to tell Izuku what Izuku is to him.
Katsuki has to tell Izuku the words he's always wanted to hear, that he can be a hero, quirk or no, that Izuku always has been a hero, more than anybody else. Katsuki knows the truth of it firsthand.

SuperBat fic idea: Identity Reveal. Misunderstanding. The case of twisting facts to suit theories instead of theories to suit facts, (in the words of Sherlock Holmes). Or how the JL assume before they have all the data.
Everyone knows Superman and Batman are dating. It's so obvious that the other League members don't even question it or ask the two about it. The two heroes are always together, joined at the hips. If you asked Supes where Batman is, he always has an answer: "At the monitor room", "In Gotham", "Outside of the States dealing with his own case", "Making us coffee in the cafeteria". And, when Green Lantern asks Batsy how Supes is doing after he got injured by Luthor's latest invention, Batman gives a curt "Resting at home. Getting better". The others are convinced the two knew each other's identity and are probably living together. And they always talk about "The Diner" too— where they agree to meet after every league's meeting, so that's probably where they go on dates, right? And then there's The Banter during missions which is really a thinly veiled bad flirting and inside jokes, the matter of sitting so close together during monitor duty, the weird silent communication that they do by staring into each other's eyes for minutes on end, the Old Married Couple Argument during meetings that Superman always seem to lose, and when the others tease them about the "mommy and daddy" thing, they dont even bat an eye. Seriously, it's so obvious that they're dating that everyone just knows.
Except the two heroes themselves. They don't even know that they don't know. The League members don't even know that they don't know. The two heroes don't even know that everyone thinks they're dating.
Clark always knows where Batman is because he can recognise Batman's heartbeat halfway across the globe although he does his best not to invade his friend's privacy. Bruce knows Superman is resting up because he's given access to the Fortress' security and he always gets the notification when Superman is using the sunbed there, not that he always check for it— only when Superman is injured during a fight. "The Diner" is merely an abandoned diner in Gotham where no one goes and Superman and Batman has used as a rendezvou to talk about cases and missions and Batman's many, many, "Rao, B, I don't think i can even remember all these" plans. The Banter is just that. Banter between two heroes who don't know they're in love. The Argument is about two stubborn men who can't come to an understanding without getting into a row first. The silent communication is just Superman perfecting his book on "How to Read the Bat's Micro Expressions". The closeness is an outcome of two idiots who still think they will lose the other one if they actually pour their hearts out and instead decide to accept the friendship they have because they're bad at feelings and self sacrificing and are really, really bad at communication.
Everything comes to a head when the League decides that that they've trusted each other to have one another's back long enough to share their identities and Superman and Batman are looking at each other like they've seen the other hero for the first time.
"Wait, you didn't know each other's identify?!" The Flash realises, his eyes wide and honestly he looks thoroughly ruffled by the news.
"HOW CAN YOU TWO DATE AND LIVE TOGETHER WITHOUT REVEALING YOUR IDENTITIES?!?!" Green Latern stands up so fast he knocks his chair down.
"What!" Superman squeaks.
"What." Batman scowls and Holy mother of Jesus H. Christ Mary, Jesus and Joseph, that scowl does not belong on Bruce Wayne's face.

The writers have been doing a really good job of conveying how little Percy thinks of himself (Percy's self esteem is literally in Tartarus in the first book), and I'm worried that some people might see that as Percy actually being stupid/incapable instead of seeing that it's Percy's unreliable perception of himself. Let me explain.
In ep 4, Percy asked two very smart & important questions about finding Hades, he called them stupid, and Annabeth rolled her eyes at him thus in-canon confirming that she thinks they were stupid questions and she was annoyed. Neither she nor Grover give him an actual answer or really consider it. They lowkey dismissed it, and the matter was dropped. Percy continues believing that his very valid questions are stupid.
In ep 5, in the scene where Percy's sacrificing himself to get the shield for Annabeth to finish the quest, he's insistent on how he would've never made it to Hades but Annabeth could succeed where he wouldn't and that's his whole verbal reasoning for sacrificing himself. Of course there's more behind it - Percy doesn't want Annabeth to sacrifice herself for him etc. - but this is the part that we hear: "Percy can't succeed but Annabeth can."
The issue is that they're both competent heroes. In fact Percy saves Annabeth slightly more than the other way around in all 10 books + side stories, and yet the fandom has this notion that it's the opposite? That Percy needs Annabeth to save him constantly, and he can't do anything without her? So I'm worried that fans are going to see this scene as confirmation of that.

I’ve had this though in my heard for awhile, how would Gyutaro react if his lover sacrificed themselves for his sake.
Like it would be something only they could do and the fact they love him so much and would want to see him flourish ever if they aren’t there to see him do that.
I know it’s super angst. I listened to la vaguelette when I had this thought maybe it’ll have some inspiration.
Have a great day! Love your work and have a magical day and a wonderful holiday season!!!! ❤️

꒦꒷‧₊ Content Gyutaro x gender!neutral!Reader, canon Gyutaro, angst, death, suicidal thoughts, depression ꒦꒷‧₊ Note Ty for this great idea! I love writing angst so this was really fun to write even though I was fighting back my tears the whole time.
Tumblr media
You're gone.
No matter how many days pass, Gyutaro cannot come to terms with it. The tears haven't stopped flowing from his eyes. They never do.
Gyutaro can't fathom the fact that you are actually gone. After it first happened, he spent days in your bed. Smothering himself in your scent. Crying endlessly as he reminisced on the beautiful moments you shared together.
You were the only person who loved him without reason. He will never find anyone like that again, and he doesn't want to.
Why did you have to be so selfless? He wishes he taught you how to be more selfish like himself and his sister. Though he will admit that if the tables were turned, he would have sacrificed himself for you in a heartbeat.
He can't handle living anymore. It's too painful for him to just exist, but he knows he can't abandon his sister.
So he stays hidden within her like old times. Like the days when he didn't have a reason to come out. When he didn't have you.
He never leaves. Only if his sister gets her head cut off and needs his help. He'll starve himself for as long as he can take too. Only coming out to eat once in a blue moon.
He knows you died for him, but he can't find a reason to live anymore. So he doesn't. He becomes a husk, a distant memory of what he used to be. His body goes on autopilot while is mind is already long gone.
He just waits for the day to come when a powerful hashira will come to the district and give him an excuse to leave this wretched earth. To be reunited with you again.
If you are watching him from up above, he can at least say that he tried. But really, he gave up when your heart stopped beating.

⏤͟͟͞͞★ 𝑭𝒕. Ran Haitani, Rindou Haitani, Izana Kurokawa, Kakucho Hitto, Sanzu Haruchiyo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐑𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢
Ran had already noticed something wrong, but he preferred to wait for you to say what you were feeling, he honestly didn't know very well how to deal with your feelings, no matter how much he worried and tried to understand you.
"What is wrong?" He questioned, somewhat apprehensive about your answer, when you finally told him how much you suffered for his gang work, almost like an outburst those words just flowed while Ran listened to you patiently, stroking your hair while you cried in his lap.
"I know this shit is selfish on my part, but I'm not going to give up this life anytime soon, you understand? I don't want you to live this... It's better for me to stay away from you." Ran would say, trying to be as brief as possible, he knew you didn't like his involvement in gangs, despite that, Ran wouldn't leave his "work" aside.
Tumblr media
𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐮 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐢
"Are you crying again?" He would question you as soon as he saw you crying, worried, Rindou would ask the reason for such insistent crying, when you told him how affected you were feeling because of your involvement in gangs, he would just hug you, trying to comfort you.
"...What do you want me to do? This is my life." Rindou would speak while watching you, he didn't want to move away from you, but he never wanted to make you suffer, despite that, quitting his gang work was not an option.
"If it hurts you so much, we better go our separate ways, I always knew this shit wasn't for you." It would be Rindou's final speech on the subject.
Tumblr media
𝐈𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐰𝐚
It wasn't news to Izana how much his troubled life affected you, despite that, he tried to keep you out of it, but he also knew that it would make you increasingly sad.
"I would like to change, for you, for us, but I-I can't." Izana would say as you finished venting on his lap, he would wipe your tears and remain there, trying to keep you comfortable, Izana wouldn't give up the life he leads, if it meant sacrificing the love he feels for you, he would do it without thinking twice .
"If you want to stay here, you're going to have to get used to it, this is my destiny and I simply can't change it on a whim." It would be Izana's last speech on the subject, he would feel bad for saying such empty words, but he really didn't want to hurt you anymore or even give you hope.
Tumblr media
𝐊𝐚𝐤𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐨 𝐇𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐨
Kakucho would hide from himself the fact that you really suffered because of his gang work, the taller one always knew that the life he led was not the kind of life he wanted to give you, making him at various times think about giving up everything, despite this, he simply couldn't.
"Baby... I'm so sorry, I'm really sorry..." As you said how much it hurt you, all Kakucho could do was ask you to forgive him, seeing you in that state made him as sad as you, but he preferred to just hide all those feelings.
"I can't, I swear, I can't, please understand this." Caressing your face gently, he said, wiping your tears and giving you a small kiss on your forehead.
Tumblr media
𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐳𝐮 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐲𝐨
Haruchiyo wouldn't know how to deal with that whole situation, at the same time he wants to be with you, he knows that his involvement in gangs could end up affecting you.
As soon as he heard you talk about how much it was hurting you, Sanzu remained looking at you in silence, he was disappointed in himself, since he couldn't give up everything for you.
"I can't do this for you, this is the life I chose and I can't go back on my own choices." He would say, confirming that he wouldn't quit his gang work, despite saying it with uncertainty, it was simply something stronger than Sanzu could handle.
After a few days, Haruchiyo would become even colder and more distant, he couldn't walk away from your life, so he simply waited for you to do it for him.

I need to talk about the ending of Rebirth, because I'm apparently the only person in the world who liked it.
Putting everything behind a cut, and I would request that anyone who reblog this with spoiler commentary do the same as a courtesy to people who haven't beaten the game yet. It's been just shy of a month since it dropped, so we're still well within the statute of limitations on spoilers. Be nice.
A lot of people are really, really upset about the ending. It's been really weird to have people who went on and on about how they'd be livid if Aerith survived now being furious that she didn't, but I guess it just proves that not only can you not please everyone, but some people are incapable of being pleased.
I've warned everyone I know that Rebirth is the middle part of a trilogy; it was going to end on a low note regardless. That's how trilogies work, the 'ending' of a trilogy's second part isn't an ending at all, it establishes the launching point for the conflict of the conclusion. As a result, second parts will generally strive to be satisfactory with the understanding that it will basically never be satisfying. I'm not going to go into that any more deeply because it's not the key takeaway here, but it's super important to keep that in mind when addressing the ending of any second part, not just Rebirth.
The fact of the matter is, Aerith was never going to survive. That was never on the table, because it was never anyone's decision but hers.
In the OG, Aerith allows herself to be killed so that she can petition Gaia for aid directly, so that she can commune with the planet in-person in order to make sure Holy is activated in time to save everyone. She chose that. She didn't want to die, but she did want to save everyone, and she understood that the only way to do that was by sacrificing herself. Changing that would have been a huge insult to her character, a complete teardown of everything she's been since we met her all the way back in 1997, and it was never going to happen.
In Rebirth, Aerith is capable of dragging Cloud's consciousness into a pocket dimension she's made out of the last days of a terminated timeline in order to both hide him from Sephiroth while he recovers, and to get a working copy of the White Materia that she can use to save the world in the timeline that Sephiroth has chosen to 'save.' She has her own army of Whispers that can and have changed things, that can and have saved people from incidents that should undeniably have killed them. Incidents that did kill them.
If Aerith had wanted to survive in Rebirth, she would have. Sephiroth couldn't have stopped her. We see that in the game, because she literally fights him at the end alongside Cloud, even though she's already dead. Cloud saved her, and then he didn't—and then he did, and then he didn't, he did, he didn't, back and forth and back and forth and we don't know who decided where it stopped.
Sephiroth wanted Aerith out of the way, certainly, but in the end he left of his own accord. He's also the one trying to change the timeline from what it was originally, he doesn't want things to go the way they did in the OG; it's entirely possible that it was Aerith herself who dragged the timeline sideways into the one where she died, because he's wrong and she knows that's the only way to stop him. (I don't necessarily think this is the case, but it's not even close to set in stone.)
I see a lot of people saying that it doesn't matter, nothing mattered, nothing anyone did made a difference because she's still dead. That the only difference that could ever have mattered enough to make it worth it would have been for her to survive—even though it was and has always been Aerith's decision whether or not that came to pass—and I literally can't disagree hard enough.
I think we—and by 'we' I mean the players as much as Cloud and the rest, this is important—changed things in the only way that they could have been changed without condemning the planet to Sephiroth's desperately lonely form of salvation.
When Aerith died in the OG, it happened so suddenly that there was nothing we could do. There was no closure, we never knew if she understood how loved she was, that we would have traded places with her if we could, that nobody wanted her to have to do this alone. We could never really know if she understood how sorry we were to have failed. We didn't get to say goodbye.
Over a quarter century later, we got that. After all this time, decades of knowing that there was nothing we could do to save her but wishing that we at least could have seen her off, Rebirth gave us exactly that.
Aerith wakes up. She's dead because she has to be, but she wakes up. She gets to see how much she's missed, she gets to say goodbye, and we get to say goodbye back. We finally have the chance to not have her taken from us, but to let her go, and to see that it's her decision to stop while everyone else keeps going. It always has been.
Aerith was never going to survive. That was never going to change, because it's not about her—it's about saving the world, and it's about you.
But things are still so different this time, because we finally got to say goodbye, and I can't think of difference we could actually make that could ever be worth any more than that.

Arthur Lester and living for someone else: an essay I dreamt up while I had the flu
First, some clarification: when I say living for someone else, I mean taking them into consideration in your life. It is not about catering unhealthily to them, or enslaving yourself to their whims. living for someone else is the difference between feeling love for someone and acting on it. It's about treating love as an action.
In episode 31, we learn a lot about Arthur's past. While Bella was giving birth, he said to James, "I can't live for someone else!" and he wasn't wrong. He loves Faroe, even if he didn't love Bella, but he didn't truly live for her. Don't get me wrong; he wasn't a neglectful father. He was kind to her and tried to spend time with her. Ultimately, he made few sacrifices for her, but not none.
Once she was gone and Parker had helped him restore his will to live, he found contentment. And this is the most important part; he wasn't unhappy living for himself, having no one worry about where he was or what he was doing, and having no one depend on him. He was fine.
But he wasn't thriving. Guilt and loss aside, he was living the life he would've, had he never gotten Bella pregnant. And yet, despite everything, despite knowing that he prefers a life lived just for himself, Arthur still said that the time he spent with Faroe--for Faroe, so to speak--was the happiest of his life. He didn't allocate much time to that selfless joy, the joy of telling fairy tales to his little girl, of dedicating time to her, but he was happier with her than he would've been without her. Happier carving out a piece of himself and giving it to her, sharing it with her, hollowing out a space in his world for her to be safe and loved in.
But he did cave to himself. He didn't dedicate as much to her as a father should, because he didn't want to live for someone else.
Cut to episode 20. This is a different Arthur than the man who fathered Faroe. This Arthur has lost absolutely everything, except John.
Arthur has made up his mind. He knows he can't beat the King in Yellow, but he also refuses to let him have John. He knows that John doesn't want to return to the King, and he knows John doesn't want to die. But John has no real agency over his fate, as he is trapped within Arthur. John can't fight back, and he can't run away. The only way he can be protected from those terrible fates is if Arthur puts himself aside entirely and thinks only of John.
So he does. He faces the King, knowing that he might die, knowing that he might fail, but completely unwilling to make a call that would doom John. And the King sees that. That's why, during the confrontation, he says to Arthur, "You despise me... and yet you love him."
That line. That beautiful, poignant line, spoken so contemplatively by the bloodthirsty god of madness. He seeks to understand Arthur, to manipulate him, to find his true intention, and that is what he finds. "You love him" means "You act singularly out of love for John, with his best interest at the core of your every decision."
He knows, because of this, that he has lost. So he chooses to take out his anger on Arthur instead.
It would've been easier for Arthur to give up while his bones were being broken. He was helpless to stop the torment, but he knew he had the knife. He could've killed himself once he realized that he was going to be subject to eternal torture, and it would've made sense. But he didn't. In fact, he begged John not to return to the King even while screaming in agony, even knowing that if John left, the pain would end. Because John's fate mattered more to him than his own. So long as he endured, John would live.
It wasn't until he realized that John was leaving, sacrificing everything for him, that he decided to kill himself. If John was doomed regardless, then this way, at least he would be free from the King. And if Arthur's motivation was at all unclear--perhaps he was sacrificing himself because of all the people the King would hurt once fully restored--he clarifies it later, in season 3.
"I died for you. For a fucking voice in my head, that stole my eyesight. I fucking died for that. Do you have any idea how insane that sounds?"
It does sound insane. But he doesn't even mention the even crazier thing he did; being willing to live for the voice in his head. To live through unfathomable agony and terror of the King's torture, just to protect John. Dying for him was his last resort, because he shares a body with him. Dying for John could only save him from something worse than death.
This means that in order to love John, Arthur has to live for him in every way possible. He has to care for himself in order to care for John. He has to do things he doesn't want to do--like maybe one day sit through a film he can't see--to care for John. Every single experience--good and bad--that he has brings John life and humanity, and every good thing he does shows John how beautiful the world can be. His patience and forgiveness helps John to grow his own sense of compassion.
The core beauty of their relationship lies within this, at least for me. Arthur Lester, a man unable to live for anyone but himself, is put in a position where everything he does has a potent effect on a lost fragment of an eldritch being. And despite what that being is, despite the bloodlust and violence of his entire existence, he slowly becomes someone so full of love and compassion that he can hardly stand to ignore a person in need. Even before growing close with Arthur, he knew compassion from his new desire to grow. He wanted Arthur to spare the wraith in season 1, because he wanted to know that monsters can be saved and redeemed. And he kept growing from there. John shed his first ever tears for an innocent animal. He looked through Arthur's cruel words in season 3 and understood that they were fueled by self-hatred, and he stuck by him and refused to let him drown in his darkest moments. He was willing to risk everything for strangers victimized by a terrible monster. He begged Arthur not to take the stone from Mr. Scratch, because in doing so, someone innocent would have to pay the price.
Of course he isn't perfect (ahem, that whole thing with Oscar), but he has been loved enough to be transformed completely. He has been loved enough to return that love, not only to Arthur, but to people he doesn't know. Because Arthur lived for him.

bsd character design analysis ★
– part 1: borrowed clothing and its symbolism
word count: 1.3k
includes: dazai, beast dazai, akutagawa, ranpo, yosano
Tumblr media
1.) Dazai's Coat (PM vs ADA)
Following the Port Mafia tradition of giving a new subordinate a superior's item as a sign of loyalty, Mori gives Dazai his jacket upon his entrance into the mafia. Dazai never wears this coat correctly, instead draping it around his shoulders.
On the other hand, the coat he wears in the ADA is not only worn in the correct fashion, but it also closely resembles Odazaku's coat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way Dazai wears his coat symbolizes where his loyalties lie. He was never loyal to the Port Mafia, or Mori himself. Hedoes takes on Mori's influence, specifically in his acts of getting something done no matter the means. Dazai does not mind playing dirty, and this follows Mori's own ideas of finding the most optimal solution. While I don't believe Mori is entirely the reason Dazai follows this path of action, it is clear that he did have some influence on Dazai with his teachings.
Dazai is loyal to the Armed Detective Agency, however, and goes to extreme measures for his comrades, including sacrificing himself in various ways. (Meursalt, dead apple, etc).
Going back to how his coat resembles Oda's, it gives light into Oda's influence on Dazai, that being him planting a moral seed in Dazai. His final request is for Dazai to strive to be a good person and not dwell along the dark side of humanity any longer. Oda is arguably one of the most important relationships Dazai has over the course of the series. He is the one who sets Dazai on a better path, and Dazai takes his words to heart. Otherwise, he would not have joined the Armed Detective Agency and found people he is loyal to.
2.) Beast Dazai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beast Dazai noticeably has the same scarf Mori does. This could be a signifier of position as the Port Mafia boss, but I believe it represents tactics that Beast Dazai learned from Mori. I am specifically talking about the control they both excise on others. In order for Beastzai's plan to work, he had to gain an almost absolute hold over the world immediately surrounding Oda. This is why it is mostly him, SSKK, and Oda whose lives are affected by his actions. Most everyone else's lives remain similar to the original BSD verse. The members of each organization are the same, is what I mean.
The iron grip that beast Dazai has over the Beast universe in order to reach his goal resembles the tactics Mori uses as the Port Mafia boss. Absolute control.
Beast Dazai's coat is another important factor. Unlike PM Dazai in the main BSD universe, beast Dazai wears his coat correctly and not around his shoulders. Beast Dazai is dedicated to his goal of securing a world where Oda can stay alive and freely write his novels. His loyalty is not to the Port Mafia, but that goal.
3.) Akutagawa's Coat
This is another item that follows the Port Mafia tradition and Dazai gives him his own coat on the night that he picks up Akutagawa from the slums.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akutagawa's coat is a representation of his trauma and dependence on Dazai's recognition to live. His goal is to receive the recognition he never got from Dazai in the past, and this hinders his own development. While Akutagawa does not care about Dazai as a person, the effect Dazai's training had on him was creating a dependence on this approval.
His coat is his most important item for the greater majority of the series. He does not use his ability without it, and keeps it on at all times, which is another topic to discuss upon his coat/ability and protecting himself. In fact, he believes for a while that he can't use his ability without his coat, either, or that he is defenseless without it.
This changes during the Decay of the Angel's arc, specifically in the SSKK vs Fukuchi fight. In a pivotal moment, Akuatagwa discards his coat in order to aid Atsushi in delivering a powerful blow to Fukuchi. He uses Rashomon without his coat for the first time in this scene, too, which shows his growth as a character, and no longer relying so heavily on having to prove himself to Dazai for a reason to live. It is an example of him making his own choices and not being under the influence of Dazai's teachings onto him that he needed to prove himself useful, or that he is even useless in the first place.
Tumblr media
4.) Ranpo's Glasses
Tumblr media
Fukuzawa gives Ranpo an ordinary pair of glasses in the Untold Origins novel as a way to "control" his ability. Now, it is well established that these are a cheap pair, and that they are useless since Ranpo is not actually an ability user, however, the importance of it lies in Fukuzawa's influence on Ranpo, and the facade Ranpo subscribes to.
Fukuzawa is a figure that represents an integral point in Ranpo's life. Before the events of Untold Origins, Ranpo had no one in his life as a result of his parent's death. Fukuzawa is the first figure to step up for Ranpo and try to guide him, he is the sole reason Ranpo realizes he is not isolated in this world. This is important because Ranpo needs that at 14 years old. Fukuzawa is the cause if Ranpo's worldview changes, otherwise he would have continued to stray on his own uncertain path.
This also marks the beginning of Ranpo's attachment to being viewed as an ability user. He has an innate need to prove himself above the extraordinary because he cares about protecting the ones he values, namely the Agency. His resolve to be strong for his friends and family is strong, and this relates to the fact that he is so driven on remaining this image of an astounding man. He can't afford to lose his place in this light precisely because he is such an important piece of the Agency. The Agency was created because of Ranpo, after all, as a place for him to utilize his intellectual gift and to belong with Fukuzawa to.
His glasses tie back as a symbol of this in the Ranpo and Poe chapter (32). He loses his glasses while in Poe's ability space, and has a meltdown over the fact that he can't use his ability without them. It has also been established that Ranpo is self aware of his non-ability reality, yet he still clings to it because he needs to live up to that self standard, and his glasses are the object of this.
(I had images for this and yosano but Tumblr has a 10 image limit ://)
5.) Yosano and Her Butterfly Pin
There is a strong theme between life & death, and rebirth & transformation within Yosano's character.
Yosano gets her hair pin from Tachihara's older brother, who was a soldier in the "immortal army" unit under Mori's command. The way she acquires this hair pin is important because he represent a huge aspect of her trauma during this time, as the repeated abuse of her ability on him ended with his suicide. This time also cements her connection with life and death through her ability. She has the ability to control life and death itself, after all. Life is important to Yosano, this is established from her herself during her fight with Kaji through her comments on death is the lack of life, and the way she strives to save lives with her ability.
Butterflies serve as a symbol of metamorphosis, whether physical or emotional, and Yosano follows this theme well. She changes drastically as a person, as she does not let her past nor her ability connect her to that level of inhumanity she is pushed into by others' views. Golden butterflies specifically represent transformation, hope, or something along the lines of past souls as well, which fits with Yosano well.

There's something so beautiful, so appealing, yet so sad about vampire Eddie Munson and normal dude Steve Harrington as a pairing. Cause like—
Just walk with me. Imagine Eddie turning into a vampire spawn, not Kas, just a normal fucking vampire spawn. A vampire spawn who exists by the normal rules of vampirism.
He can't go in the sun. He isn't invited into places unless otherwise told. He must stay in the dark, hidden away. And, the worst part of his new form—
Eddie Munson, the man who was supposed to die saving the people that mattered, is immortal.
He's immortal. He makes friends. He works alongside annoying coworkers. He lives with his wonderful uncle. He falls in love.
And slowly, over time, he watches as everybody around him ages. The finer wrinkles, the grey hairs, the knobby joints, and collapsing postures. Their fragile voices and softer bellies, as they grow accustomed and comfortable with life. Life after violence.
But Eddie gets older, sure. He turns twenty-five. And thirty. Fifty-five. Seventy. His hair remains a dark brown. Face forever twenty. Body as lithe and malleable as it was before the Upside Down. And yet, for all that he's sacrificed—
The biggest sacrifice is the people he eventually loses.
Uncle Wayne dies peacefully in his sleep. And Eddie's forty-four, Wayne would've been eighty-three. That's normal. That's a normal death. A normal age. Except that Eddie is still...twenty.
Dustin Henderson and the rest of his friends, Robin Buckley and Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers, Argyle. They all die, too. They go grey and they gain soft bellies. They have crows feet. Grandchildren that look the exact same age as Eddie. They think that Eddie is a really young cousin, they think he's some lucrative relative.
The one that hurts the most, in the end, is the loss of one Steve Harrington. Who stole Eddie's heart. Red and raw between his hands. Kissed the tender outside with his beautiful, charismatic mouth. He was what sustained Eddie's dire cravings, blood and skin and tender moments. Steve shared many nights with Eddie in the dark, under the stars, in the glow of the moon. He shared interests, poked fun at Eddie, loved Eddie. He loved Eddie. And Eddie...God, he loved Steve.
Loved him so bad, that when Steve died, Eddie knew he lost himself, too. Because nobody will be as lovely and as young and as...and as lovely, as Steve Harrington. You don't grow to love a boy with golden skin, somebody who can go under the sun and bring home sunflowers. You don't grow to love the boy who knows your worst trauma and all your messy secrets. You don't just grow to love a boy. You come to love the man, the spirit, the hole that he leaves.
And Eddie Munson is immortal, cursed by his vampirism. He may have helped them defeat Vecna, he may have been able to aid his friends and his lover to their beautiful life-long end—seen them age and grow comfortable and happy. But, he assumes that the true sacrifice wasn't his death, it was his liveliness.
How is he supposed to continue on without the ones who know him best? So Eddie Munson is immortal.
You know what they say kills vampires. Does Eddie do it? Or does he reign himself to a million lifetimes of friendships and warm dinners, yet the loneliness at the mere fact that nothing can ever be replicated? Does he reign himself to a million lovers, hoping that in one instance, Steve will be the reincarnated body next to him in bed?
Or does he join the tender souls of his loved ones? Stake through the heart and a thousand new stories to tell.

MERA U CANT TELL US ABOUT PREGNANCY KINK AZUL WITHOUT TELLING US ABOUT RIDDLE’S TOO! GOLDFISH RIDDLE CANON RIDDLE APOCALYPSE RIDDLE THEYRE ALL SO HOT AND HORNY FOR U WHEN YOURE PREGO.
BONUS POINTS IF IT WAS FROM GENTLE NONCON. No but the idea of carrying your captor’s child while trying to shield your belly from him but he’s just so sweet and insistent he cares for you that you slowly give in OTL orz orz orz
SO TRUE!!!! Every version of Riddle loves his pregnant darling (a little too much hehe <3).
BUT GENTLE NON-CON WITH APOCALYPSE RIDDLE!!!! Oh, the Heartslabyul compound leader is always so strict! He means well, of course, but sometimes it's so difficult to see through his tough, no-nonsense exterior. He was very respectful during the bride selection, and he'd made sure you were treated properly when you were brought from the bride dormitories to the main quarters where he and other important figures within the compound live (namely Cater and Trey). You thought he might be a kind husband if he went through all of this trouble to be so patient and polite with you, but then he opens his mouth to reprimand you for slouching your shoulders or for eating sloppily when you nearly devour the high-quality meal on your plate (it's so much better than lukewarm stew; how can you not devour it?!) and suddenly you realize he might not be as sweet as you once assumed.
There are so many rules he expects you to follow and they're all tailored specifically to prepare you and your body for child-bearing. You can't eat certain things, you can't spend too long in the bath, you have to eat vitamin-rich foods and exercise often. You have to let him work you open with his fingers so that it won't hurt when the time comes, and it's such an uncomfortable process. Cater usually slips you alcohol or an aphrodisiac beforehand so you're more receptive to Riddle's touch, so it's easier to stomach the feeling of his fingers curling up inside you to search for all the special spots that have you crying out. He praises you after each session, and there's always a treat waiting for you when you wake up (the only time he ever allows you to eat sugar) as well as water and any medicine you might need to help with the hangover.
You can tolerate it when you're drunk or out of your mind with ecstasy, and with such a muddled brain you'll allow him to eat you out, to fondle your breasts and roll your perky nipples between his fingers, and sometimes if you're really needy you'll kiss him so sloppily, teeth clicking and tongues tangling. It's nice in the moment because you don't have to think of the revulsion or the anxiety you feel when you're sober. It's nice because Riddle is genuinely sweet to you; he never scolds you or says anything cruel when you're falling apart on his fingers.
But there's a calendar in his room and a week has been marked in red. You know that's when he intends to finally replace his fingers with the thing you've been dreading. You know that within that week one of your nightly activities will result in a success and weeks later you'll be tested and it'll come back positive. For a while you tried to think about it lightheartedly. You can continue to live lavishly (albeit stressfully when your husband is Riddle) and all it costs is one child (for now; you're certain he'll want more in the future). Nine months must be sacrificed so that you can live happily (or about as happily as you can make it when this situation is not emotionally ideal). You think of the delicious meals, the warm, comfortable bed, the nice-smelling soaps, Trey's delicious baked treats, Cater's fun gossip, but no matter how "good" these things are you just can't ignore the fact that, in order to keep these things, you must follow more troublesome rules, bow to Riddle and his tyranny, accept your fate when he lays it out so clearly during your little sessions.
You've entertained escape, but where would you go? Not outside. Not beyond the walls of the compound. Riddle is the lesser of two evils. You have no choice. You've entertained damaging yourself so that you will be unwanted goods, but every time you came close Riddle would learn of it and stop you, harshly lecturing you: "Do you know how reckless that was?! Do you know how important you are?!" Does he know how hellish this is for you? Probably. Everyone knows it; they never openly discuss it, though. This is the new normal.
The weeks slip away, and the night before what will soon be the week you've feared all along, while you're lying in bed with Riddle, he tells you you won't be permitted to hide behind the effects of liquor or an aphrodisiac. Your mind is elsewhere when he gives his reasoning (something about wanting genuine intimacy), so you hum your compliance. You can't argue him even if you wanted to. And rather than disobedience, you spend the following day assuring yourself that it'll be okay. It's just a week. You've been prepared for this. But it isn't the act itself that scares you; it's what will be produced by it.
So unsurprisingly you fight him. He's been nothing but sweet in the weeks leading up to this, but even so your fear greatly outweighs any fraction of appreciation you could muster. He has you pinned down, your throat bound in a collar that does nothing but humiliate because you are not magically gifted, and he tells you he loves you. And he means it; his voice is so fragile, a ghost of a whisper in the quiet of his room, the both of you shrouded by the silken canopy that encloses his bed. It feels like you're on an island when you're so sectioned off from the rest of his bedroom, with his voice as the only other sound, save for the wild thumping of your heart.
He promises he'll be gentle, swears he'll be sweet, when he kisses the tears that cling to your lashes. You'll do well; you always have. He would never hurt you. He loves you so much. Just look at him. Don't look down there. Listen to his voice. He's here for you. You squirm and struggle and he holds your hips down, tries to get you to remain still enough, all while shushing you, insisting it'll be okay. His fingers do not hurt; his touch is still so careful and considerate. He's sweet when he isn't red with anger. He whispers to you that fighting will only make it worse. He says he loves you (he's saying it a lot), and it's a repeating record in your head, a mantra of some crooked truth.
You're tight. Even with all of the lubricant, even with the preparation, even with his thumb rubbing circles into your clit, you're still so tight. You're crying, begging him to pull it out, but you're clinging to him, your arms wrapped instinctively around him because he's the only anchor in your deep, dark sea. And he's buried his face in the crook of your neck, mumbling all manner of praises, sweet nothings, filth. It all blends together in your ears, but just like he promised, just like he vowed, he's sweet and soft and slow during the entire process.
Months later, you avoid him, ignore him, swat his hands away when he tries to feel your round belly. He's learned patience with you; he doesn't explode as often as he did before you were pregnant. He's too sweet sometimes, so much so it twists your rationality. You're meant to hate him, this system, this situation. But you're beyond hormonal and it's hard to stay consistent with your hatred. Some days you're sobbing over the smallest things. Other days you're incredibly cheerful, giggling with Cater over silly news he hears from around the compound. It takes some time, but during these mercurial moods of yours you start to warm up to Riddle when you interact with him in a group, often with Trey and Cater. In private, you've stopped shielding your stomach; you let him touch it. You let him wrap his arms around your front so he can fuck into you from behind, always so careful and gentle, leaving the both of you breathless, sweaty, sobbing messes. He presses kisses to your shoulders, traces patterns into your belly, promises you'll be the best mother in the world. He always tells you how pretty you look with your swollen tummy, how every change that pregnancy brings is so beautiful, how he loves, loves, loves every part of you.
You believe him because it's the truth. Because it's your normal. And perhaps after the nine months have reached their conclusion and your baby is born you'll beg him to repeat the process, spreading your legs and opening your pussy for him, eyes alight with hope and arousal and, surprisingly, love. Who is Riddle to deny you? He's always been fond of you, but secretly he's most fond when you're so very pregnant. :)

'The egg needs to be born from true love'
Contains spoilers to Book 7 in Twisted Wonderland
Exactly. Born.
Being born is like being hatched, not being in the egg or created. Being born is being released to the outside world, not being protected from it by a shell or skin (in humans case).
What I mean to say is, does an egg not have to be made from true love?
Sure, Meleanor and Levan did loved each other, but when they both were gone, the egg was starting to slowly die.
It's not about the creation of him, it's about the lack of love.
The love that managed to make Malleus hatch was Lilia's true love.
It wasn't the eggs parents love, but it was love strong enough to make it hatch.
So that makes me wonder, does creating an egg need true love? Or does the hatching need it and you can create one without it?
Since keeping it alive is so very hard, that one could call it impossible without true love. Since we've seen how hard it was even for Maleficia to keep Malleus alive.
But if you only could do it with true love, would the Senate really keep on insisting on marrying Draconias off to others to make connections?
If they couldn't make an egg, the Draconias would be extinct, right? The heir was also their priority, since they rather disliked Meleanor for her actions towards them.
But if theoretically love is needed only for hatching and not creating it, could it be that a mother's love for their child would be enough make them hatch?
Of course it would have to be love storing enough for a child to hatch, but that's not impossible, is it?
Without true love to a partner, could Meleanor make Malleus hatch, if he were to be a son of some random royalty? Could she do it with a mathernal love?
Since dragons are very passionate, a mother even if hated the father, would still take the best of care for her child.
But can one person's love, be strong enough hatch an egg? Yes. Lilia did it. Did it, with Malleus.
It wasn't Malleus's parents nor his relatives, but a true and honest love that made him hatch.
Looking at the blood-relations he was a complete stranger and yet, the only thing needed was love.
Love from one person.
Love strong enough. A mother's love for their child is unconditional, so that surely should be enough?
If one person, a complete stranger can make a child hatch, then why can't his mother?
So my interpretation of it is that the egg doesn't have to be created with love, but needs to be hatched with one.
Fae's wouldn't throw themselves at each other to make children they can't hatch, so they were doing it only with the loved ones.
To be sure that the child could survive with the love it would get, no matter what could happen to one of the parents, they still would have the other one to look after the egg.
But even with both parents gone, the child still can hatch with love. It doesn't even have to be their parents' affection.
That's why the Senate wasn't afraid of the end of the Draconias bloodline, they eventually knew that, no matter how prideful Meleanor is, she would make her child hatch. No matter the cost.
Just as she sacrificed herself for Malleus when he was in egg, was a statement at how much she loved her child. She would do it over and over again if needed, her love would surely be enough. Even without Levan.
And the fact that Maleficia also used magic instead of love to keep Malleus alive for as long as possible.
So, keeping the egg alive haven't needed love (even tho it was slowly dying), but could hold on themselves for a while with only magic.
Tumblr media
It's one of my late night rambles so don't take it too seriously. It was only my what if, since the Senate wouldn't let Draconias die this easily. Besides it's only what if, I hope it hasn't hurt anyone or hasn't made anyone enraged.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xie Wei should really become besties with Tantai Jin, since misery loves company, those two would hit it off right off the bat - two men with a death wish, even if Xie Wei doesn't actively seek to die, the sole purpose of his existence is to complete his revenge, if sacrificing his life in the process is another necessary means to his end, so be it. He reveals many things in his confrontation with Xue Ning, but perhaps the most brutal is the conviction he deserves to die and there is no reason for him to live on, living happily and comfortably after completing his revenge has never been an option for him, he doesn't plan to have a future beyond that, since he's never expected to meet someone who would understand and accept him (just like his friend had mentioned, people simply feel too much awe and fear to treat him as their equal), he considers himself too damaged and incapable of living a mundane life, too guarded and reserved to let anyone close, much less in. Until Xie Ning, until she stormed into his life. And now he is standing here, open raw and vulnerable in front of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fake Dingfei possesses something Xie Wei, for all his intelligence and wealth, doesn't - the will to live, to truly live, thus his fear of death - Xie Wei lacks both of those things. He doesn't care for himself, only for his purpose. Once his revenge is finished and the Yan family safe and sound, he has no plan for himself beyond that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Xie Ning accuses him of using others for his ends; however, the one he uses and hurts the most is himself, he sees himself as a tool for his own revenge, once it's done, he can expire for all he cares, with the revenge being the sole reason he is keeping himself alive, how wretched his body ends up in the process is none of his concern, others worry for him, but he has complete disregard for his own well-being, health and safety. His master plan was the only thing that mattered to him until her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At one point, she mentions she can't figure Xie Wei out, no matter how much she tries. That's because he can't even figure himself out and has been constantly sending Xue Ning mixed signals and being hot and cold with her, just during this conversation alone, he contradicts his words in the next sentences and his actions, or vice versa, betraying his real feelings. His need to keep her close clashes with the instinct to push her away and keep her at arm's length to protect himself, but her as well (it's Lassie all over again). He knows Xue Jing is his only weakness, one he can ill afford.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She wants a good man and that guts him, because after everything he's done and been through, he thinks he can never be one for her, considering himself too twisted, damaged and beyond redemption to be deserving of her. The warning is meant to put distance between them, but he's holding her close and clinging to her the whole time and subsequently tells her, she already belongs to him, despite the fact how terrible he is. The depth of Xie Wei's confusion and denial is almost as deep as his trauma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE SYMBOLISM OF XIE WEI BLEEDING AND COLLAPSING WHILE WATCHING HER RUNNING AWAY FROM HIM! It's as he can't live without her and something inside him dies when she leaves. He is pushing Xue Ning away both physically and emotionally, even though what he truly longs for is for her to stay despite his own self-loathing and how damaged he is.

So I'm back on my percy Jackson bs again and I saw this one post on Tiktok claiming that Solangelo is "Klance Coded" and I simply had to laugh because that couldn't be any further from the truth...
Klance is Red and Blue, Fire and Water type polar opposites in both personality and aesthetics
However, not every polar opposite style ship is "Red and Blue Coded" there's also Sun and Moon, ( Or in Solangelo's case, Sun and Star) Light and Darkness.
so basically, and this might be controversial, but I know those who will get it will get it, what I'm trying to say is.....
Solangelo is NOT Klance Coded.
Solangelo is SORIKU Coded
Tumblr media
I can go into heavy detail, and I will!
Will is definitely a lot like Sora in that even when surrounded by so much bad happening or even when he's going through his own stuff, he still puts on a smile and pretends nothing is wrong. of course to his own detriment and also has self sacrificing tendancies. Overworking himself to heal others to the point of exhaustion and even down to the self esteem issues. Sora sees himself alone as worthless without his friends ("My Friends Are My Power") and Will feeling like Healing is the only thing he's good for since he didn't inherit any of the other natural talents most of his other siblings have as demigod children of Apollo. And the incident with Octavian probably didn't help either. They also have somewhat of a hero complex and struggle with dealing with the fact that they can't save everyone. Sora broke a major taboo in order to bring kairi back in kh3 because he didn't want her to die, and Will being a medic that had been through not 1 but 2 LITERAL WARS, one in which he lost several of his siblings and of course being a medic in general, no matter how hard you try or how good at your job, it's just a fact that you cannot save everyone that's put in your care. Also, Both Sora and Will are heavily associated with Light both literally and figuratively
And then we got Nico, who just like Riku was lost for so long in lieral and metaphorical darkness, both trapped in metaphorical labyrinths of their inner turmoil of thier feelings, their pasts, their trauma (wether it be losing someone they care about, or being abused and manipulated at the hands of a shifty adult figure for their own gain) , and feeling that they have no place of belonging. only to be brought back by the people that care about them the most and through their own self determination and strength. And also both characters associated with darkness literally and as a concept.
Riku and Nico also have a teensy bit of Angel character symbolism with Nico's last name being Angel in italian and Riku's original keyblade Way To Dawn having both a monster/demon wing and Angel wing at the hand guard and for the "teeth" of the keyblade
you could also argue Riku could technically be seen as a "Fallen Angel" type character since he was originally chosen to be a keyblade wielder by Terra but lost that right when he fell to darkness hence why the keyblade went to Sora instead, then Riku spent the next several games on a very angsty redemption arc.
And of course, Nico and Riku aren't strictly associated with darkness. Nico is a son of hades, a prince of the underworld, The Ghost King. However, he isn't all doom and gloom. He's still just a teenage boy that's secretly a giant nerd and is actually a a good kid.
Riku as well, has the power to wield both the powers of light and darkness and it was Riku's light inside his heart that sora reached out to that dark and stormy night on the beaches of destiny island that let him wield the keyblade in the first place
And don't even get me started on how Riku is 100% gay coded (don't beleive me? look up the "Riku Is Gay" video on youtube, grab a snack and enjoy. you're gonna be there a hot minute)
Both characters in both medias are opposites to each other but both also compliment and balance each other out. But not like Fire and Water. Like Light and Darkness. Not only hat, but the dynamic between Sora and Riku and between Nico and Will are kinda similar. not identical by any means, but enough to where I definitely noticed it.
If anyone else has anything to add to this, let me know! I had this lightbulb a few nights ago and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since!
