Dark Passions Susan Wright Book 1 - January 2001 (232pp) Book 2 - January 2001 (200pp) Before Kira and Bashir stumbled upon the mirror universe, there was plenty of intrigue going on. Agent Annika Hansen of the Obsidian Order has been ordered to to eliminate the new Overseer of the Alliance, Kira. Even assassins don't appear immune to her considerable wiles, however. Familiar characters play evil and manipulative to the hilt. When Kira obtains an Iconian transportal device, no one is safe from her wrath. Susan [Wright] said, “I'm fascinated with parallel universes. ‘Mirror, Mirror’ was my favorite TOS episode, and I enjoyed the DS9 mirror universe episodes. So when my editor at Pocket Books, John Ordover, said he wanted me to write a ‘bad girls’ of Trek, I was up for it. I created the story for one book, and afterwards it was expanded to two books. I made Seven of Nine and Intendent [sic] Kira the two main characters, and put them into a relationship. I thought it was great that Paramount allowed the interaction. I loved writing characters that were familiar yet fundamentally different. For example, Seven was trained as a Cardassian assassin since there is no Borg in the mirror universe.”

Stop shaming people for being passionate about the things that they love. Stop mocking people for having unusual interests. Like, honestly, I’m so tired of feeling embarrassed for being "too much". If being too much means having deep interests that fill my life with romanticism and excitement, then let me be!! I’d much rather listen to anyone ranting about their latest obsession with 16th century swords than have a boring ordinary conversation with those who shame passionate people.

Susan Wright really is the Trek novel author that keeps giving me everything I want. Like "Dark Passions" is a truly batshit, cognitive-dissonant ride in two volumes but the main plot point in it (especially the second volume) is that mirror Seven and mirror B'Elanna become friends and are immediately ride or die for each other. I don't think I have to tell you that that's exactly the kind of stuff I want to read... in every universe. In every damn universe, even the mirror universe!

Wright also wrote that one story in "The Lives of Dax" featuring Nilani Kahn and Saavik that has been living in my head rent-free for the past six years, and given the fact that Wright often wrote about Trek women being unabashedly attracted to each other, I don't think any longer that I'm reading too much in the interactions between Saavik and Nilani lmao

I've been meaning to read all her other novels and short stories set in the Trek universe ("The Best and the Brightest" especially) for a long time but as it often happens lately, brain power lacking
