“Kazu…coffee.” The teenage girl complained, a sleepy yawn interrupting her whine for caffeine; a soft hum came from his throat, his fingers still tracing along her jaw. “Please, so sleepy.”

“I guess since you said please, princess.” he drawled teasingly, a cocky smirk coming to his lips when she didn’t try to argue against it.

She could’ve scowled in response to her endearing nickname, and it wasn’t even because being called a princess by someone other than Ran bothered her, that wasn’t it. She’d never openly admitted it to anyone, and she especially never would to the dark-haired teenager in her bed, but she honestly loved it when he would call her a princess; it always made her feel bashful and trying not to blush when it came out of his mouth was continuously a challenge. Out of everyone that had called her a princess, whether it was her elder brother doing so affectionately or someone announcing her street name, no one’s voice made her feel the way Kazutora’s did with a single word. Rather than let on to how much she enjoyed it, she tried to mask her shyness with dead-eyed expressions and an annoyed tone of voice, it had worked for years but she didn’t see that happening too terribly much longer if he continued on using it the way he had been since he put his foot down about it yesterday; she was already struggling to hold her composure and could feel the beginnings of a blush blooming on her cheeks.

“Whatever, carry me to the kitchen.” She grumbled, avoiding his persistent stare like the plague. “I’ll start coffee.”

“First time you’ve asked me to carry you.” He commented after a moment, her head turned back to him as he slipped out of her touch and went to move off the bed. “Almost thought you didn’t like it anymore.”

“I tried kicking the habit.” She confessed, sliding herself across the mattress to the edge. “Couldn’t do it.”

“Your Onii-san still carry you around when you get upset?” Kazutora pressed curiously; she did scowl at that, slipping an arm around his neck while he went about scooping her up into his arms.

“Rin-nii did last time.” She admitted, her voice monotone; she was still partially shaken that he’d done so, she’d never thought she’d see the day where he’d submit to doing something that he’d forever argued against. “Aniki tried to tell me no about it and Nii-san got mad at him.”

“Weird.” The dark-haired teenager uttered, sounding just as confused about it as she still was; Kazutora was the only person she’d ever felt comfortable enough with to confess her coping mechanism, he’d even gone about it for her when she got overwhelmed and paced circles around her room in the dead of night back in the day.

Mako Mermaids F/Feb Day 12

Day 12 Dress, Human!Ondina/DarkMermaid!Mimmi, 494 words, Rated T (darker than show with an ambiguous ending)

Mimmi watched from the rocky shore as the blonde girl with curly hair made her way along the sand and towards the very rocks where Mimmi lay. Today she wore a short dress, a turquoise skirt stopping above her knees and a white top stopping just underneath her breasts. The land girl didn’t often wear dresses, usually opting for tops and shorts but it looked so cute on her. 

The girl was close enough that Mimmi could make out the familiar shape of her lips and could almost see the ocean blue of her eyes. It was more her imagination, even Mermaids didn’t have eyesight that sharp but those eyes were unforgettable. 

“Mimmi?” The girl called out, scanning the rocks.

“Down here,” Mimmi waved her hand above her head. 

She could see the smile that broke out on her land girl’s face as she beelined for the exact rock Mimmi was behind.

“Hi,” the girl clambered down the rock and crouched down beside Mimmi. 

“Hi Ondina,” Mimmi smiled then took Ondina into a kiss. The land girl tasted of something sweet, almost fruity. 

“I missed you,” Ondina said, leaning back and sitting herself on a separate smaller rock, away from the encroaching waves that splashed up over Mimmi every so often.

“I missed you too, but I couldn’t get away.”

Ondina was fiddling with the hem of her dress. Mimmi got the sense she was scared to meet her eyes. 

“Ondina?”

“I want you to turn me into a Mermaid too.”

Mimmi froze. 

“Ondina -”

“I love you Mimmi, I want to be with you.”

“I love you too Ondina, but you really don’t know what you’re asking.”

“I want this Mimmi, please.”

Mimmi swallowed.

“Follow me,” Mimmi manoeuvred herself down into the rock pool and awkwardly paddled out. 

Ondina followed, stepping into the water the waves licking the edge of her dress. 

“Will this hurt?”

“Probably?” 

The water grew deeper and Ondina changed to swimming, her dress floating around her. Mimmi turned over onto her back, lazily flicking her fin. Ondina was in the middle of shrugging her dress off.

Mimmi swam over to her and helped unite the strings on the back. The fabric was immediately swallowed by the sea and carried away leaving Ondina treading water in just her underwear. 

“What now?” Ondina asked. Her skin was turning ever so slightly blue, and Mimmi could see her shaking from the cold. 

“This is the part that might hurt,” Mimmi cupped Ondina’s face and leaned in for another kiss. The strong taste of salt tasted wrong on her lips. She kept a strong grasp on Ondina before slipping under the water pulling Ondina with her, their lips still touching. 

The next day someone found Ondina’s turquoise and blue dress snagged on a rock, the last remains of her life on land washed up like discarded litter. In a way it was as now she forever swam the sea with the Mermaid she loved.

Lately, I've been a bit stressed out. Lots of projects are being juggled, old ghosts have been tugging at my sleeve and my body has been bogged down by this miserable summer heat. My creativity and motivation feel practically nonexistent at this point too, and summer seems to be FLYING by- it's all very frustrating! . But... I know that Lake Michigan has got my back. There's something special about Lake Michigan, really. It drowns out the voices in my head, and below it's surface, time itself seems to freeze. I haven't gotten to go out for a "for fun" swim yet this summer, but my gosh... Lake Michigan sure is singing quite the siren song at this point. I can't wait to get back into the water. 🙏🏻 . If you've never had the chance to swim in the Great Lakes, I highly recommend you (safely) do so. The lakes are seriously therapeutic. And... Lake Michigan is the best one. 🙃 . Excerpt from Chapter 21

“Your room still the same?” Kazutora questioned, her eyes did roll at that; it’d definitely changed since the last time he’d been in it.

“Some stuff is still the same.” She replied easily; she’d worry about all that other shit later, she couldn’t let overthinking ruin their precious time together. “Bigger bed now, got these cool canopy curtains over it.”

“So, a princess bed?” he drawled teasingly; she threw a glance back at him over her shoulder, her eyes narrowed in annoyance.

“Cut that shit out, I’m not-“

“You’re totally a princess Rei.” He cackled pleasantly, a grin on his lips; an irritable huff left her, she should’ve known the first time he called her that years previously that he’d never stop. “So, stop pretending that you don’t like it when I call you one.”

“Dumbass.” She retorted, her voice thick with annoyance; her eyes lit up when she went around the corner to enter the den, immediately dropping to her knees to collect the kitten when she noticed him. “Hi baby, how’s my sweet boy? I missed you.”

Tora’s big yellow eyes were darting between her and the teenager standing behind her, soft little mewls coming from him as he inched close enough for her to scoop him up from the floor, cradling him against her chest while he pressed a paw to her nose in boop. She giggled quietly, moving back to her feet as she nuzzled her nose against the kitten’s lovingly, more soft mewling coming from him.

“Who’s my sweet boy? Totally you, right baby?” Reina gushed, her tone uncharacteristically girly. “Not mean like Kazu huh?”

“Rude.” The dark-haired boy chuckled, sounding playful; she side-glanced through the curtain of yellow when he stepped up next to her, his free hand moving to hover at the kitten’s face to be checked out. “When’d you get a cat?”

“Few weeks ago, Baji found a bunch of them when he was walking home from school one day.”

He pulled his phone from his pocket without a second thought, flipping it open and went to press the key to speed dial her saved number, his onyx eyes narrowing when it shut unexpectedly.

“Need to call Rei-chan, Ken-chin.” Mikey spoke calmly.

“No damn way, we’re gonna talk about this shit Mikey and you’re not dodging it this time.” The vice commander retorted, his voice stern; his head tilted back almost robotically, finding both Draken and Mitsuya staring him down with identical expressions.

“Rei-chan’s worried right now, need to call her.” He repeated, holding his composure.

“Mikey, you can’t just drop a bomb like that and expect us not to ask questions.” The lilac-haired teenager retorted, his tone even; he did understand that, but the questions could wait until after he called Reina. “You weren’t bullshitting them.”

“I wasn’t.” he agreed simply, his expression serious.

“Told you before that you needed to face this shit and you decide to do it today? Of all the days you could’ve picked to admit that you love her, it had to be today?” the taller blonde pressed, sounding pissed to high heaven. “That could’ve bit us in the ass, why the hell would you tell them that?”

“We got the truce, didn’t we?” he questioned, a blank stare on his face. “He wasn’t going to budge without my confession, Rei-chan being my wifey wasn’t enough for Ran.”

“If this hadn’t been a neutral zone Rindou would’ve come at us.” Draken followed up, his tone still just as irritable.
