in another life
i could be a good girl forever
listen to everything they'ld say
be wise, but not clever
i would stay away from cocaine
all the drugs that kept me high
so i could feel my lows
maybe then i could fly

i love graffiti. "comics and jazz are the only american art forms" you forgot graffiti. did you remember graffiti? That art form birthed in Philly and NYC in the early 70s by poor Black kids. that art form that spread all over the world and influenced so many. that's used without irony in commercials when they're trying to appeal to a "young urban" customer.
did you forget graffiti? that racism broken windows theory victim? that reach the establishment takes claiming that it's exclusively violent gang members throwing up those full-color pieces and wildstyle tags in the middle of the night outsmarting fifty security cameras because the billboard was ugly anyway. as if, even if it was, it wouldn't be impressive as all hell. risking brutality and fall damage so your art can occupy the space a gentrified condo named something like "Coluumna" took away from you. proving that despite only assholes affording to live here anymore there's still a soul beneath it. an animal with dripping stripes and teeth that go clack-clack tsssss

I need a friend that sits me in his lap, just for innocent snuggles. He offers me a joint, I don't wanna take it, but he's just so sweet and convincing. He'll take care of me, he says. I get dizzy. He starts to touch me more.
But it's nothing unusual. I enjoy it, he says. I shouldn't worry my pretty little head about it.
My brain is cloudy? No, it's not. Come on, Sweetie, one more. You're gonna feel even better. You like this. You like how light and silly it makes you feel. Are you hot baby?
Awww, it's fine. Just lose your pants. That's right. Come straddle my lap. Aw, you look so out of it. That's right. Bounce on my cock like a dumb little slut. I wonder how long it takes until we get you addicted to my cock...

If you struggle with substance abuse but not addiction, you still deserve support. If you struggle with suicidality/self harm urges but don't act on it, you still deserve support. If you struggle with psychosis and paranoia but have insight, you still deserve support. If you struggle with anything but are "coping with it," you still deserve support.
You dont need to be in imminent crisis to get help - safety planning, harm reduction, resources, and accommodations. You're still struggling. You're still suffering, You're still at risk/in danger. You deserve better - you need better. Your health and wellbeing matters.

Everything you know about addiction is wrong | Johann Hari
This TED is from 2015, and I have yet to hear a better explanation for drug abuse. I absolutely think that drug abuse is a coping mechanism for a lack of connection that a lot of us experience.
It's time to release the (incredibly wrong) past information that we were fed about drug users, and start to try to understand what we can do to help. Love and understanding is a huge part, but its not the only one.
