The Escarpment Track
High above what is now State Highway 59 on the side of Paekākāriki Hill, is the very scenic Escarpment Track.
Despite being well out of the city, this walk is easy enough to do by public transport.
Simply take the train to Paekākāriki, then it's a short walk to the trailhead and off you go. The walk finishes at Pukerua Bay Station, perfect for the train back into the city.
Two things worth noting about this walk are that there are many stairs and it is very high up with lots of exposed edges. For me, the former are fine but the latter are more problematic, so I was glad not to be doing the walk alone.
On the plus side, the views are gorgeous and the track is quite well kept with benches and rest areas. There was just one dodgy steep bit where there was a diversion due to a slip and you had to scramble a tad - hopefully that's been fixed since April.
Once you begin to descend, you descend quite rapidly and the last couple of kilometres just follow the trainline into Pukerua Bay. I would definitely recommend going this direction as I think it is more manageable in terms of it getting better as it goes.
Overall it was a 7.9km walk and took just over 2 hours and 5 minutes with a snack break and plenty of photo stops.

"Escarpment" - Adobe Photoshop, 2024
I've personally divested myself from Adobe's Creative Programs ever since they switched to the subscription model, but I can cheat a little bit because the local library happens to have the Creative Cloud on their Maker Space computer :)
Personally, I think Krita is a superior program when it comes to meeting my needs as an artist, but I still like to dabble in the older program for nostalgia...

When standing in the middle of these desert plains and looking towards the interior, the view is generally bounded by the escarpment of another plain, rather higher, but equally level and desolate; and in every other direction the horizon is indistinct from the trembling mirage which seems to rise from the heated surface.

Escarpment 2017 Kiwa Pinot Noir
Provocative bouquet, almost riotous. Black cherry, plum, sarsaparilla, cinnamon, sandalwood, bramble and violet notes persist through to luscious palate shored up by taut, tea-like tannins. Structured, spicy and savoury, screams whole bunch and new oak. Flashy opening however fizzles out once this bold pinot pulls back and flatters to deceive. For now.
Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand; 100% pinot noir; 13.2% abv; 5.2 g/l total acidity.

Critic Reviews
Fragrant and robust, this red combines power and finesse, with an overwhelming amount of detail. Flavors of black pepper, mahagony, hops, sandalwood, blackberry and plum are joined by accents of Earl Grey tea, cedar and baking spices. The tannins have plenty of muscle, but there's an amazing sense of harmony and polish on the long, intricate finish. Drink now through 2033.

From 30-year-old vines in deep alluvial gravels, this is a spicy and pristine wine that's approachable now but is also very cellar worthy. A heady perfume of blueberries, pomegranates, tobacco leaves, scrubby Mediterranean herbs, florals and crushed stones kicks it all off. Then the palate takes it all to another level, bursting with crunchy, juicy fruit, crystalline-like minerality and savory spices, all threaded together with structured ultrafine tannins. Drink now–2029.

The 30-year-old Clone 5 and 6 vines that went into the 2017 Kiwa Pinot Noir were picked before the rain and included 40% whole clusters. It's a crisp, wiry, medium-bodied wine, with tart cherry and underripe plum notes that finish dry and astringent. Give it some time and hope it delivers more generosity in the future. Drink: 2021-2030.
