While looking around for Little Red Riding Hood things, I discovered this very interesting book by Philippe Jalbert called "Dans les yeux" (In the eyes). It is a visual retelling of Little Red Riding Hood that goes with a very neat principle. On the page on the left, you see what the Wolf sees ; on the page on the right, what the little girl sees. It gives some neat effects:

My French is still really bad, but I took this book to the doctors with me to read in the waiting room just to see how much I still remember, obviously didn't understand much but I was surprised by how much I actually was able to understand even with it just being a little bit.

Mysticons French Book #2
Tumblr media
I know I said when discussing the first book in this series that I won't be reading the sequel. However, as the price went down, I decided to. The book itself is a retelling of episode 2. And while the cover doesn't mention an author, only La Bibliothéque Rose, the inside reveals it was adapted by Catherine Kalengula.
Just like the previous book, Kitty Boon and Necrafa revealed in the section that described the characters, despite not showing up in this book. This is weird, as Kitty wasn't even mentioned in the show at this point. And while Necrafa was mentioned, she's treated as this mysterious figure we know nothing about, so it's weird to describe her. Dreadbane was also mentioned in the character section despite not showing up in this book, but that makes sense. He was in the first one, and his actions played a role in Arkayna's motivation, so he still is important to discuss.
First, I'd like to talk about the title of the book. The title when translated to English is Team Spirit. While it takes a slightly different path than the show title, I think it fits, as Arkayna does have to learn to be part of a team. I actually think this works better, as a book can focus on internal thoughts, making the book slightly more about Arkayna accepting help and slightly less about training.
One thing I liked about the book is that it shows Arkayna and Zarya not understanding why the Dragon Disk chose the others (i.e. Zarya not getting why it chose Arkayna and Em, Arkayna not understanding why it chose Piper and Zarya). This was not seen in the show, which makes sense. The writers would have had to get characters to talk about it, and that's not what they were going for this episode. However, as people can think anywhere, the writers of the book could add that.
Like the first book I read, it did gloss over some scenes. The scene where Arkayna asks how long Em's shield can hold up and Zarya snarky response after it fails is simply described with no dialogue in the book. Unless they felt the chapter would be to long with it, that makes no sense, especially since, in my opinion, Zarya's snark is part of her charm. Also, the fountain and floor beneath it falling when Doug sat on it was completely removed, going straight from talking about when training starts to the selfie.
I also noticed that they call Em "Emerald" sometimes in the book. This is noteable because, when I watched Mysticons in French, Em wasn't even called her full name when the Dragon Disk activated.

This very large but skinny book (that is definitely not a saddle pad) finally arrived! Unfortunately it's entirely in French. I'd be happy if I could read and understand without necessarily speaking. I can figure out what some means by the pictures for context clues 😅

You know what? Let's go for it.
I have entered a Sun Wukong phase, I am not going to be shaken out of it, and apparently the book I talked about has no official English translation. So...
Sir, Ladies and other critters, I officially announce that I will translate, in English and for free, Frédérick's Tristan Le Singe Egal du Ciel, The Monkey Equal to Heaven (or the Monkey Equal to the Sky)! If you do not know what I am talking about, just go two posts below on my blog and you'll find my presentation of the book.
Mind you, I am not a translator by job, I am merely an enthusiast who happens to speak both languages (French and English) and who kind of knows English. So I do not guarantee that it is an excellent translation or the best there could be - but I love the book so much that I will try my best. Also, for the sake of my own health and because (again) it is free, I will only posts my translations on Sunday, and I guess I will post between one or two chapters each Sunday (they are relatively short).
It will take a while as a result to get the whole book, maybe it will be one year and a half? But hey, that's life and I am certainly not going to burn myself out. Plus, maybe the first translated chapters won't gain any attraction or popularity, so who knows?
But I'll do it. For the Monkey King!

“There are several ways to approach a subject as complex as the First Empire: to consider it the personal adventure, intoxicating but doomed to the failure of a single man, or to treat it from the perspective of a larger story, that of a world in transition.”
Tumblr media
Okay, but the latter is definitely the accurate one. A lot of people want to take credit for Napoleon’s achievements, but assign blame singularly to him. It’s never been anything other than scapegoating as a means to absolve personal or collective guilt. It’s an actual policy.

Guys, you need to know about this book from a French author but I don't think it's been translated in any other languages like her other books. It's called "Objet de toutes les convoitises", meaning "Object of all desires" by Françoise Bourdin.
She usually write het romance but along the way, she wrote a gay romance involving four characters: Joyce, who's in a couple with Mark, a lawyer from France. Mark works with a friend and associate called Alexander, son of an aristocratic British family. Alexander is in a relationship with a russian ballet dancer called Dimitri. They all live in London.
Alexander and Dimitri are all over the press, they're a popular couple since both are famous in their respective jobs. Alex is also very popular because he's not married and from a wealthy family so everyone wants a piece of him. It also doesn't hurt he's handsome.
Mark and Joyce are in love, they're a regular, happy het couple.
The thing is...Alex is (secretly) in love with Mark. And he's a manipulative bitch. He knows Mark is "not like that"...but is he? Would a little (big) push make him cross the line? And what about Dimitri, who's desperately in love with Alex? Dimitri is a gorgeous man, athletic, great dancer. Alex should love him. While Mark is a random guy, not ugly, but quite common.
So what happens when Alex decides to change things for good knowing he's trying to lure a cishet guy into his web? (he really is a manipulative little shit)
This book is Trope Land. It has so many tropes. I don't know if the author knows anything about fanfiction, BL or whatever mlm literature is popular online but it is a must read. Not that it's good per se, though it's not bad at all, but it's just perfectly written for a very specific target. The author is not young (she published her first novel in 1972) and this book was published in 2004. So I wonder what inspired her to write this only mlm book. She's a popular and accomplished writer so it's really a special book.
