how do we know in the books that john is indigenous? can you say more about how his indigeneity is important to his story?
hello! so there is a word of god post on race (doesn't mention John but mentions that Gideon is "mixed Maori"), BUT I frankly don't think word of god statements are worth any weight without actual in-text support (see: the "dumbledore is gay" situation). SO!
Specific evidence that John Gaius is Maori, as revealed in Nona the Ninth:
When he is listing his education, John mentions having gone to Dilworth School (John 20:8). Dilworth is an all boys boarding school in Auckland and accepts students based on financial need instead of academic or sporting achievements. Demographics appear to be about 70% low income Maori boys, indicating that it is highly likely that John is Maori
John reports that P- said he looked like a "Maori-TV pink panther" (John 15:23) when his eyes turned gold. Maori TV is a TV station that is focused primarily on Maori culture & language revitalization, with presumably all or mostly Maori hosts, and tbh I don't see why P- would say this unless John was himself Maori
John uses a te reo Māori phrase ("kia kaha, kia māia") (John 5:20) when he is saying goodbye to the corpses in the cryo lab before the power is shut off. Though it is possible he said this as a non-Maori kiwi, but in combination with the previous two points of evidence I think this all very strongly points to him being Maori
He also renames his daughter Kiriona Gaia, "Kiriona" being just literally the name "Gideon" in te reo Māori
TLT is not a series that hands you anything on a silver platter but to ME this is all pretty solid proof
Why is this relevant to The Locked Tomb?
In Nona the Ninth, we learn that before he completed apotheosis and ate the solar system, John was basically trying to save the earth from capitalism-caused climate change. Climate justice and the rights of indigenous people over their own land are deeply tied together, in the same way that climate catastrophe and capitalism/ imperialism/ colonialism are linked. disclaimer that this is NOT my area of study and others have definitely said it better; this is just the basic gist as I understand it, but on quick search I found some sources here and here if you want to do some reading.
TLT is not a series that hands you anything on a silver platter, but i don't think it is a stretch to see John as an indigenous man trying to save the earth and getting ignored and shut down at every turn by primarily western colonial powers (PanEuro, the USA) who declare him a terrorist and then as a reader thematically connecting that to the experience of indigenous climate activists IRL
there are absolutely TLT meta posts that have discussed this before me; tumblr search is nonfunctional and I have been looking for an hour and a half and cannot find anything specific even though i KNOW i reblogged multiple posts about this in the first few weeks following NTN's release. sad & I am sorry
I think that by the time the books take place, John is 10k years removed from the cultural context he grew up in, with the Nine Houses having become a genocidal colonial power in their own right (with more parallels to be made between John's forever war for the resources of literal life energy and like, oil wars), but I also think that John Gaius is a fictional character who can represent and symbolize multiple different things in service of telling a story. (not to mention the potential thematic parallels being made to how oppressed people sometimes are pressed into replicating the power dynamics of their oppressors and continuing the cycle--now that is a tumblr post i KNOW i read last year and definitely cannot find right now, once again sad & I am sorry)
How Radical Was John Gaius, Really is a forum thread that was locked by the moderators after 234534645674564 pages of heated debate

Susan Pevensie comes back from Narnia and tries to forget, not because she doesn't believe in Narnia anymore, but because it hurts too much thinking about what she lost.
In Narnia, she was revered, respected. People wrote songs about her, asked for her hand in marriage. She was with her siblings, and she was free, and she could finally stop worrying about her brothers dying in an air raid. She had a people she protected, a land she ruled, and family to look after. She was respected in courts and battefields alike.
Narnia brought other problems, of course. Not all her suitors were kind about her rejection, and Peter and Edmund were expected to lead armies, which meant they were always in the line of fire. More than once had they come home with grave injuries that took months to recover from, even with Lucy's secret potion.
It is this Narnia Susan vividly remembers just aftee she comes back, a wild and savage land where magic roams free, but evil roams free too. It is the Narnia of eternal winter, of giants and ogres, of Aslan dying on the Stone Table. The Narnia of Telmarines, of dead friends, of failed sieges.
England forces her back into obedience, into a mold. Tells her to behave in a way expected of a young lady. Lucy can stay wild a little longer, but Susan has an education to focus on, men to impress. England tells her she is below her brothers again, should get married and have kids.
So Susan tries to forget, convincing herself that the stiff upper lip, tight collars, kneelong skirts, ridicule from adults when she speaks her mind and forced silence is better than the freedom she had in Narnia.
For that freedom had to be paid for in blood. At least in England her family and friends don't risk dying, not after the war.
She alienates from her brothers and sister further. She tells them Narnia was a game, a fantasy. But the difference in faith is also due tk the way she has to hide how it changed her. Peter, Lucy and Edmund do not have to. The boys write long essays about justice and religion, join the fencing team. Lucy dances everywhere she goes and is known to never wear shoes if she can help it.
But the archery club at school will not accept Susan. Neither will the debate team. Her teachers are annoyed with the fact she never slips up, disgruntled at the fact a woman runs rings around them intelectually. Susan is a young woman after a time of war, and all of society would rather she shut up and do what she is told.
Soon, Susan has new friends, new things that matter. All these adult thoughts she can only discuss with her brothers and sister drive her crazy, and there is no one around that takes them seriously. And so she tries to grow up as fast as possible, get to an age where people listen to her again. She forgets so that she doesn't have to deal with the feeling she was meant for much more, to ease the mourning of all that she lost when she kissed Caspian goodbye.
All the Pevensies start forgetting Narnia slowly, the memories fading. Soon none of them remember the names of their generals at Beruna. They forget the smell of battle, the weight of an iron sword in their hands. But they all still walk as if their crowns are on their heads, and ride horses in a way none of their instructors understand. It takes a while before they are back to their Narnian levels, but it is clear to them someone has instructed them before. None of them can figure out what commands they use, however. Is it western style, perhaps? Or maybe rodeo? They cannot have been taught in England, not with the amount of control they can exert with and without saddles, the sense of balance. Some of their teachers are astonished by their academic growth, but others attribute it to the lax education standards after the war. Susan is sold short most often, but all the Pevensie children suffer from arguments with teachers and attitude problems. Teachers generally don't like it if you behave like you are older or more important than them. It's worse because they are almost never wrong, even though all of them feel the effects that having a teenage brain has on their speed of thought and the coherence of their arguments.
The Pevensies deal with these remnants of Narnia in different ways. Susan becomes an actress. She picks West End over Oxford because the stage is a place she is allowed to be free. And since Narnia, dry textbooks don't thrill her like they used to, while the fantasy concepts of spirits and courts and magic and other things thespians work with entince her all the more. Inside her is a longing to become someone else. She knows where it comes from, but she doesn't want to acknowledge it.
Susan plays a queen often, or a diplomat, or a model. Something about her performances have audiences hooked, convinced she was royalty in a different life.
Remembering Narnia hurts. She scolds someone for being reckless with the stage props while teaching them the correct way for a full minute before realizing the person in question is older than her, and doesn't listen to a young woman. He has the same name as her younger brother.
So Susan forgets. But as she carves her way into the elite of old Hollywood, years later, she begins to remember as well. What it's like to have a voice. How it feels like to have people listen.
When Lucy, Edmund and Peter die in the train accident, Susan weeps for days. She knows what she has lost in them. She is now the only person fluent in their interpersonal language, the only one that still remembers the mating call of the centaurs, what jokes a forest spirit makes. She is now truly alone in the world.
Narnia comes rushing back to her during this grieving period. Eventually, she remembers that she used to have a voice, a crown, lovers of whatever gender she wanted. And also how Narnia would have you pay for freedom in blood. They gave up on that freedom to protect her siblings. only to lose them anyways. Suddenly, Susan remembers how Narnia was fair, how a bargain struck was a bargain kept. She remembers the nymphs, the trees in spring. She remembers the beauty of it all.
Later, when Susan is a grown woman and an arrived actor in Hollywood, Aslan begins returning to her dreams. He never speaks to her, but the sight of him gives her strenght. She was once Susan the Gentle, who accompanied Aslan to his death. It is time she returns to being that person.
After the Stonewall riots and during the AIDS epidemic, Susan is the only actress willing to make a public stand. It costs her 2 box office hits and a 3 month ban from the tabloids. But she remembers justice, and the price of freedom. Others start looking to her for wisdom, just like they did all those years ago. Susan feels her quiet strenght returning, her faith slowly coming back.
She stops wishing she could forget Narnia. The magic that was responsible for the memory faded with time. Maybe it was just to protect her from mourning a world where she was so much more.
When Susan looks at the boys coming back from wars in Korea and Vietnam, she recognizes the look in their eyes. Reflected in their behaviour is a maturity that shouldn't be present in teenagers. The loss of innocence, the unrepairable damage to their childhood illusions. It is a look she spent her twenties avoiding mirrors for, because she knew what it meant. No matter what she told herself then, she believed in Narnia. She still does now.
She knows her siblings are in a different place now, and that she revoked her faith in that place, but slowly, as the years grey her hair and wrinkle her face, she begins to believe she may one day join them there. She remembers Aslan as a kind lion, even if he wasn't a tame one.
She grew old in Narnia once, after all. She hopes to die there.
Once a queen of Narnia, always a queen of Narnia

Never Say Goodbye - Part 3

Part 3: Contact
As it turned out, your life started to get better after you missed that shift at the coffee shop.
Oh, you still got fired. But the experience of nearly getting splattered on the pavement by an oncoming truck gave you some unexpected clarity about your life.
Mainly, you needed to stop wasting it. You were tired of jobs that would pay your bills but not bring you closer to your career. And frivolous thoughts of coffee shop boys and…the hope of running into your soulmate.
Maybe one day, you could dare to hope, but from now on, you wouldn’t let it rule your thoughts. You wouldn’t hope too hard either.
It could save you from the disappointment of never hearing anyone’s thoughts but your own.
So you decided to check the University of South Dakota’s career board for jobs, and you discovered an opening in the history department! A research assistant for one of your favorite professors, who was writing their dissertation on the strange, superstitious, and sometimes down-right disgusting social practices of the Ancient Greeks (including bottling up the sweat of their best athletes, because they thought their musky body oils contained magical properties).
Since you were already majoring in history, you were a shoe-in for the job. And working directly with your professor gave you a great resource for future classes.
Four years later, you had earned your bachelor’s degree in History. You even decided to further your education when you were able to get a scholarship for graduate school.
Now you were just one semester away from finishing your master’s. You still worked in the history department, but you had been able to upgrade—to Executive Secretary to the Dean of Ancient Studies.
It sounded fancy, but really, you were a glorified slave. Or at least, your boss seemed to think so.
“I need you to cancel my meeting at two,” said Dr. Birch. She breezed into your tiny office without knocking, startling you from where you were hunched over your laptop.
“Good morning!” came your reflexive greeting, though it was a bit too loud and sharp. You internally winced at yourself and relaxed your posture, like a bird unruffling its feathers. “Cancel your meeting with Dr. Wells?”
Dr. Wells was a nice man, and an important one. He was the Head Dean of the entire History department. Technically, he was above Dr. Birch. It wasn’t a good look to blow him off, but you weren’t about to say so.
“Yes, I have an important lunch, and I already know it’s going to go overtime. Gary will understand,” she replied. She was looking at her phone rather than at you. For all she cared, you were just a calendar with hands.
Dr. Helen Birch was a brilliant woman. She’d published no less than five books, had won awards for her peer-reviewed articles, and she had been your academic advisor all through graduate school.
She could also rival Meryl Streep for “bitchy-ass boss” in The Devil Wears Prada.
“I also need you to grade the final exams for one of my classes,” she said. “Greek Studies this time.”
You held back a sigh. Again? I’ll never finish my own finals at this rate.
But what you said was, “Sure, I can do that. And I’ll email Dr. Wells to reschedule.”
“Yes, make sure it’s not on Thursday,” she said, brushing a finger through her thin blonde hair. “I have to leave early to get my roots touched up before I go away this weekend.”
“That’s fun,” you chatted while you revised Dr. Birch’s calendar on your computer (and sent an apology email to Dr. Wells). “Where to?”
“Oh, I have this tedious conference in Chicago. But then my boyfriend is taking me skiing in Breckenridge.” She sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. “I simply can’t wait. This semester has been a drain on my psyche, and just terrible for my migraines.”
With the email sent, you took a little breath and gathered some courage as you got up from your desk and gathered a handful of papers you had stapled together. It was a rough draft of your thesis, which was only a bit worse for wear (including a suspect coffee stain that you didn’t remember accidentally putting there).
“Actually, I was going to ask you if you got my email about my thesis. I just wanted to go over some of the feedback you gave me on the draft,” you said, trying to sound more confident than you felt.
Dr. Birch raised a brow. “What of it?”
“Well.” You showed her the front page, which was covered in red ink. “Mainly the part where you crossed out the first three pages and commented, ‘Missing the point.’”
She nodded. “Yes. I’m afraid I have nothing to add about that.”
Well, that didn’t exactly help you. The first three pages was your entire introduction to your thesis, “TV & Film: The Modern-Day Mythology of the Masses.”
You must’ve had a pitiful, lost look on your face, because Dr. Birch finally took pity on you. She sighed.
“You are a creative girl. I’ll give you that, but your degree is not in cinematography. You are a historian,” she said. “And while the ‘Well of Souls’ in Raiders of the Lost Ark may be based on a real historical place in Jerusalem, that does not mean Indiana Jones can, or should be described as a ‘religious experience.’”
My ten-year-old self would bed to differ, you wanted to retort, but you kept your mouth shut and lowered your eyes. Dr. Birch nodded to herself and was about to leave your office, until she stopped short and gave you her Amex card.
“Oh. And get me a coffee, would you, dear?”
Tumblr media
The moment your day ended and you were able to get into your car, you let out a long sigh of relief. While you waited for your car to warm up, you massaged your hand, aching from grading papers for Dr. Birch’s class.
You rubbed your hands together, this time to warm them as the frigid air draining from the car still bit into your skin. A shudder tingled through your body, and not in a pleasant way. Honest to God, I hate the winter.
On reflex, you toyed with the silver ring on your right hand—your mom’s ring. It usually comforted you, but today, remembering her made your heart heavy. Because today was the anniversary.
You still remembered that snowy day when you were fourteen, could picture it so clearly, like a scene painted on glass.
With one last sigh, you fished out your phone to call your dad. It rang for a few seconds (it always took him an eternity to answer his phone, and it drove you crazy).
“Hello?”
“Hey, Dad,” you said.
“Hey. Just got off work?”
“Yeah, I’m headed back to Sioux Falls. Want to meet at home and go together, or do you just want to meet me at the cemetery?”
The other line was silent for a moment. Longer than you would’ve liked.
“You’re coming, right?” you pressed.
“Look, I’m gonna have to work late tonight,” Jack said. “Don’t wait up for me.”
“Really?” Your voice was terse. “It’s one day a year, Dad. You can’t even manage that?”
“I told you I’m working a case.” He sounded annoyed. You didn’t care.
You were pissed.
“Whatever,” you dismissed. But then, you realized you weren’t willing to let it go just yet. “You know, I just find it interesting. On her birthday, Christmas, today, somehow you just can’t be bothered to visit your wife.”
“Hey, drop it, all right?” your dad snapped back.
“Sure. It’s none of my business, I guess.”
“I don’t need your sarcasm either.”
You silently fumed, but you weren’t willing to hang up the phone first. You didn’t want to look petty, and apparently, neither did he. You both could be stubborn like that, sitting in a tense stretch of silence instead of just…
Instead of just, I don’t know what, you could admit, if only to yourself. Eventually, his voice reached your ears.
“I’ll go when I can,” he said.
“Fine.”
And you really did hang up this time.
Tumblr media
What should’ve been an hour drive back into your hometown took almost two with the traffic.
Oh yeah, you still lived at home with your dad. It wasn’t ideal, especially with a long-ass commute every day. But unfortunately, being a full-time student with a part-time job didn’t give you the budget to have your own life.
At least you had your car—a dark blue Camaro your uncle had restored and gifted you for your twenty-first birthday. You didn’t talk to your Uncle Bobby as much as you would like. Between work and school and taking care of the house for you and your dad, you didn’t have much free time on your hands. You did see Bobby around town sometimes, and occasionally shared a beer with him when your demanding schedule allowed.
Your dad had never liked it, you hanging around your uncle. So you didn’t tell him.
That seemed to work out better for both of you.
In fact…
You reached for your phone again and found your uncle’s number.
“Stop badgering me, Rufus. I’m busy.”
Your lips curved into a grin. “Uncle Bobby?”
“Oh. Hi, darlin’. Sorry, thought you were some riff raff that keeps spammin’ me.”
“What did Rufus do now?” you asked.
“He knows,” Bobby said. The surly edge to his voice made you smile in amusement.
“What’re you doing later? Up for a beer?”
“Usually I’d take you up on that, but I’ve got some people coming in pretty soon.”
You scoffed. “You have people? What people?”
“You’re not the only number in my cell, you know,” he said dryly.
“What, you mean Rufus?” you teased.
“All right, now you’re just runnin’ up my minutes,” he said. “If you really want that beer, you’re welcome to swing by, if you want. I’ve got a stocked fridge full of cold ones.”
You laughed, then you considered his offer. Did you really want to go home and deal with your dad (whenever he bothered to come home)?
“Well, I’m going to the cemetery first, but I could maybe swing by after,” you replied.
“Right, that’s today, ain’t it?” Bobby said. “Give your mom my respects.”
A more genuine smile grew on your lips. “Thanks. Will do.”
You hung up with him just as you got to the cemetery. It was hard not to feel melancholy here, especially in the winter. All the graves were lightly dusted with snow, and it felt like the world came to a quiet stillness here.
You bundled up with your scarf and gloves as you braced yourself for the cold, stepping out of the car. On your way in, you heard the rumble of a car going by. It was loud enough to make you turn your head and see a flash of black speeding away.
You shook your head. People drive like maniacs nowadays.
You were about to continue on your way towards your mom’s grave, when you finally heard it.
Say goodbyeee…never say goodbye-y-aaayy. Holdin’ on we gotta try, holdin’ on to never sayyy goodbyeee.~
Someone was warbling a Bon Jovi song in your mind, and it certainly wasn’t you.
But you did come to a dead stop in your path. Your eyes widened as shock claimed your heart and your brain. Soon enough though, your heart warmed as you became aware of something new. It was like a low hum at first, reverberating inside your chest.
You and me and my old friends, hopin’ it would neeever end. Say goodbye—
The singing continued, but all you could focus on was the thrumming in your skull, the thread of connection you could sense and feel inexplicably. You didn’t realize you were crying until you felt warmth trickling down your cold cheeks. Sniffling, you wiped your tears with the back of your hand and smiled tremulously.
You were finally feeling your soulmate.
Which meant, he was close by…and with that realization came an important question:
What the hell do I do now?
Tumblr media
They were in South Dakota again.
Dean knew coming back here was…potentially dangerous. He hadn’t heard his soulmate’s thoughts in four years, since the last time he was in this state.
Truth be told, he hadn’t wanted to come here. After the last hunt though, he could use some R&R at Bobby’s for a couple of days.
This time Dean had his brother with him, albeit the circumstances weren’t…great. Their dad was missing, and Sam had lost his girlfriend in the process of trying to find him.
Sometimes, Dean really regretted going to find his brother at Stanford. Part of him thought, if he hadn’t hooked Sam into coming with him to try and find John, maybe Jessica Moore would still be alive.
A more selfish part of him (one he wouldn’t name) was glad to have Sam with him. Dean was actually having fun hunting with him. And maybe, Dean was having to get to know him again too.
“You think Bobby will have any intel on Dad?” Sam asked from the passenger seat of the Impala. They were about five minutes away from Singer Salvage, the old man’s tow business (and his house).
“Doubt it,” Dean replied, changing the radio station once Bon Jovi turned to REO Speedwagon. He could get down with some pop rock from Jovi, but REO was pushing it.
“Then why are we here?” Sam turned to him with a frown. “We just ganked a poltergeist in our old house and…we saw Mom. You think we should be wasting time right now?”
Dean’s lips pursed. Leaving their old house behind in Lawrence, Kansas was exactly why he needed a minute before jumping into the next case. As much as he wanted to find John, Dean just…he needed a minute to breathe.
Revisiting those old (painful) memories wasn’t easy for him. He wasn’t sure that Sam completely got that.
“Bobby’s got a stack of lore books to Kingdom Come. Who knows, he might have a way to help us find Dad,” he said.
Sam shot him an unimpressed look. “And if he doesn’t?”
Dean resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He got why Sam was so fired up. Really. The fact that the kid was having weird…premonition dreams about the near future was concerning. And he wanted to find the thing that killed Jess, that killed their mom, but this was clearly going to be a marathon. Not a sprint.
“In the meantime, we crack open a couple beers,” Dean said, “get one or two of free nights on actual beds, and then we’re on our way to the next gig. How’s that sound?”
Sam let out a sigh through his nose and faced the road ahead. They both knew he wasn’t happy. Dean couldn’t exactly blame him.
When they finally got to Bobby’s, the old man greeted them with a casual wave, beckoning them inside. He offered them the contents of his fridge—a few beers and a frozen lasagna defrosting in the fridge. Dean scoped it out while Sam dropped off his bag in the upstairs guest room.
“That for us?” Dean pointed to the lasagna with a grin. “Didn’t know we merited the red-carpet treatment.”
“’Cause it’s not just for you,” Bobby said dryly, then he hesitated. “...My niece might be swingin’ by later.”
Dean raised his brows in curiosity. “Didn’t know you had a niece.”
Or any family, for that matter. He knew the old man had a wife, once upon a time, but he assumed she’d passed away. No kids. Bobby had never talked about having an extended family. He didn’t have pictures on the walls, and the shelves only had books and locked boxes.
Bobby took a long sip of his beer after opening a bottle each for himself and Dean. He had one ready on the counter for Sam, who came into the kitchen looking tired. The kid hadn’t been sleeping well for the past few weeks, to say the least. Dean handed him the beer.
“I don’t see her much,” Bobby conceded.
“Why’s that?” Dean asked.
It took a moment for the other man to answer. Eventually, he was honest. “Well, she's grown. Going to school, got a job. But you could say I had a fallin’ out with her dad, a while back.”
“You have a brother?” Sam said.
“Brother-in-law,” Bobby corrected. He didn’t say anything more about it though. Sam and Dean shared a look that said they agreed: There’s something off there, but I’m not gonna pry.
“You still see her though?” Dean asked.
“Every now and then,” Bobby said, sipping at his beer again. “It’s a small town.”
That kind of pissed Dean off. Bobby was a good guy. He’d watched Sam and Dean a lot when they were kids, their dad on a hunt. He’d made sure they had decent food to eat, good movies to watch, and even played catch with Dean a time or two.
So what kind of assholes did Bobby have for family, that they couldn’t be bothered to check in on the old man every now and then? They must’ve been off living their lives, in their own little world. Must be nice.
Dean brought the bottle of Heineken to his lips, only to realize it was empty. Couldn’t have that, could we?
He went to the fridge and opened the cap, only to jump as the beer fizzed and leaked over his hands.
Damn it!
Bobby sighed. “And I just mopped the damn floor.”
“All right, Martha Stewart. Keep your slippers on,” Dean teased. “Sam, get me a paper towel.”
Bobby tried to get by him to get the mop, but beer was still dripping down Dean’s arm.
“Would you move to the sink, already?”
Sam finally cracked a small grin as Dean rolled his eyes. “Fine. Jesus. You’d think Miss America was comin’ into town.”
Tumblr media
Damn it.
You heard him again. And this time, you could hear his voice, so you knew the thought belonged to a him. The voice was pleasantly deep, and annoyed. You actually felt his irritation and were able to recognize that the emotion didn’t belong to you.
Excitement bubbled in your throat, almost making it hard to breathe as you drove your car down the road. You had been too worked up to go see your mom, and technically you were supposed to head to your Uncle Bobby’s house, but this was too important.
You needed to figure out how to talk to him—your soulmate.
So you pulled over on the side of the road, and even turned the radio off. Okay, now what?
You didn’t know what you were supposed to do. They taught about this subject in school, sure, but that had been years ago! You’d spent the past six years filling your head with college and work and learning how to be an adult.
Okay, just breathe. You calmed down a bit with some deep breaths, and you closed your eyes. When you first heard your soulmate’s singing in your head, you remembered feeling warmth spread through your body, emanating from your chest. Then in your mind, you’d noticed a…a thread, of what could only be described as energy.
You felt it now. You could almost visualize it with your eyes closed. In your imagination, it was bright and beckoning. You focused on it, and it grew brighter, thrumming and soft.
You thought of what you wanted to say, and you tried it—sending your thoughts and your will through the connection.
Having a rough day?
Tumblr media
Dean was still wiping beer off the floor in Bobby’s kitchen when he heard your voice ring through his mind.
Having a rough day?
His entire body tensed, and he paused with a ball of wet paper towel in his hand. Sam had taken the mop from Bobby and was about to finish off the floor, until he noticed Dean blanking.
“Dean?” he asked.
It shook Dean out of his shock, enough for him to look up at his brother. “Hmm?”
“What’s up? You were staring off into space.”
Dean feigned innocence. “Nothing.”
Sam’s brow rose, but he didn’t press the issue and went back to mopping. Dean took the opportunity to toss the wet paper towel in the garbage.
“I’m gonna hop in the shower,” he said, and made his swift exit to the bathroom upstairs, so quickly that he didn’t see Bobby watching Dean curiously from the living room.
“Don’t use up all the hot water!” Sam called after him.
Once again, Dean found himself locking the bathroom door and staring at himself in the mirror. His green eyes were conflicted as he tried to calm down. Maybe his heart was starting to beat a tick faster. Maybe a trickle of nervous sweat was making its way down his spine. Maybe he didn’t know what the hell to do.
His dad’s warning was still clear as a bell in his mind.
“Unless you’re prepared to hang up your gun, and stop hunting, don’t open that door.”
Dean knew why John had said it, and even agreed with him…at least, logically he did. His life was complicated, and insane, and bloody. How could he put someone else through what he went through? What he still went through every day? It wasn’t right.
But his chest was aching. He rubbed at it absently.
He could feel your worry again, he realized. You were anxious, probably waiting for him to respond. Dean could feel you. Having a rough day? you’d asked him.
So as usual, he made an impulsive choice.
You could say that, he carefully replied. He remembered the way your voice sounded, smooth and pleasant in his mind, and he couldn’t help smiling a little. But not for long, I’m thinkin’.
Your relief hit him in a slow, but powerful wave. It almost made him feel guilty for taking so long to answer.
Well, it’s not every day you hear someone else in your head. Maybe you’re going crazy.
She was teasing him. You were teasing him.
It brought an incredulous smile to Dean’s face. You’re one to talk. Maybe you’re just talkin’ to yourself right now.
Hmm. I don’t usually warble to Bon Jovi, but maybe you’re right.
A beat of surprise, another to remember what he and Sam had been listening to in the car earlier, and then embarrassment prickled at the back of his neck.
You heard that, huh? he asked wryly.
Maybe, you giggled. It was a cute sound, and it cut through some of his embarrassment. He wasn’t used to being put back a step by women. He was good at reading people’s body language, and usually it didn’t take him more than one look to figure out what a woman thought about him, and what they wanted to do with him.
So the fact that he couldn’t see you was a challenge. With that realization, a slow smile spread across his face. He was game for a challenge.
Well, I’m likin’ your voice so far, he said. Think I could get you to sing for me?
He felt you pause, a flutter of warmth through a tendril of shyness. I’ll leave the performing to you, Romeo.
Come on, it’s only fair.
Who said life is fair?
Dean sobered a bit at that. Ain’t that the truth.
Hmm, so you were having a rough day.
Make it a week, he said.
Yeah, I know the feeling…I wasn’t having a good day today either.
Dean sensed your melancholy and didn’t like the feeling. Well, now you’re talkin’ to me. So it should be smooth sailin’ from now on.
He could feel you brighten at that. It made warmth bloom once again inside his chest, especially because he sensed you were smiling—a bit shy, but genuine.
…What’s your name? he asked.
It took you a beat, but eventually you gave him your name. It wasn’t what he expected, but he liked it. Your name rolled through his thoughts, and he tested on his tongue.
What’s yours? you asked predictably. Somehow, Dean didn’t anticipate the follow-up.
Suddenly he realized exactly what he was doing: he was talking to you. (Something he’d told himself he wasn’t going to do.) Not to mention, he’d been locked in the bathroom for about ten minutes and hadn’t even showered yet. Pretty soon either Sam or Bobby was going to come knocking to see what the hell he was doing, so he might as well shower for real.
He answered you as he turned on the showerhead and started undressing. I’ll make a deal with you…if you can guess what I do for a living, I’ll come by and introduce myself in person.
Dean felt your shock, so he let you think as he stepped into the shower. Eventually you came back, annoyance coloring your emotions and your voice.
That’s stupid.
Dean smiled. Aw, come on. It’ll be fun.
For you!
Don’t you know, sometimes the best things in life come after some delayed gratification.
You paused for a moment, in which Dean didn’t know if you were in shock again, or just pissed. Maybe a combination of both.
Great, I got a comedian, you deadpanned. …You’re not a comedian, are you?
Sweetheart, I’m hilarious, Dean replied. But no. Good guess, though.
He sensed the equivalent of you rolling your eyes.
Just then, Sam knocked on the bathroom door.
“Hey, you better not use up all the hot water!”
“Twenty minutes of peace, Sammy. That’s all I ask,” Dean shot back. Sam made a sound of annoyance, but he went away, leaving Dean almost alone with his thoughts.
Look, I gotta go, he said regretfully. But I expect you to have some guesses cooked up by the time I get back from work.
You were still annoyed, but you begrudgingly agreed to his terms.
Fine. Just…don’t wander too far off. I can’t win the game if I can’t hear you.
Dean sensed your underlying worry, and your fear. You were afraid he was going to leave.
His heart softened. As a result, he ended up promising things he didn’t know if he meant.
Don’t worry. I’m not leaving town until you win, he said.
He felt your warm smile, along with your excitement.
Goodnight, sweetheart. We’ll talk soon.
Okay…goodnight.
He hung onto the feeling of your presence for a few seconds longer, before he let go of the connection. For now.
Dean caught himself smiling, but it quickly turned to a frown.
“Nobody should be waiting on men like us to come home bloody.”
When he once again remembered his dad’s warnings, that new warmth in his heart chilled, and it sunk like a stone. He leaned against the cool bathroom wall and pressed his forehead against the tile, while lukewarm water beat the side of his face and body.
Shit.

Tumblr media
yae sakura, your friend is dragging you to the board that list all of the rank for the last week's test. it was out of character of her to drag you and be enthusiastic. she was always a calm and a patience girl.
just what got her so excited?
"sakura. is there a reason why you're so excited to see the rank?"
she halt her step and you almost bump into her. "you wanna know why?" she faced you and let go of your hand. sakura slightly smile "i wonder if that rival of yours is in the top 3." she teased you. you frown a little at the mentioned of 'rival'. "i couldn't careless..." you scoffed.
"let's go now. the others are probably waiting."
"oh, right."
following behind sakura's step; you two arrived at the board and your circle is waiting by the sidelines since the board is crowded with other students eager to know their ranks. they all greeted you and you nod in acknowledgement.
"you're first place this time, [name]!" your boy friend beamed. kevin kaslana, your other half. not those kind of other half but the platonic type. you consider him as your best friend and brother.
"ohhh... then who's second?" you questions kevin. "isn't it obvious?" he flatly said. he averted his eyes to a figure and you followed his eyes movement. 'ahh.. he lose this time.' well atleast you now know who is placed second because of kevin.
"oops! gotta go. my girlfriend is calling me." and with that, kevin run off to who knows where. "congratulations, [name]." su, your other boy friend congratulated you. you shot a tiny smile at him.
every student that's attending this international school have what it takes to be the best — but only the selected individuals could be at the top of the world. as of now, there's only 7 geniuses that were selected. all of those selected geniuses have already offers waiting for them. wether it be the sports national team (whatever you called it) or an elite educational university waiting for them.
"congrats." a deep voice said behind you. you turned to face the person. his bored eyes staring into you. "congratulations to you too, itoshi-san." you slightly smile. "i don't need your congratulations." he scoffed. the same as ever, straightforward.
"being salty would get you nowhere, itoshi-san." you lightly chuckles. sae frown at your words and mumbled 'whatever'. "well, we gotta get going now. see you later, itoshi-san." you bid your goodbye and sakura soon followed after you. even if you two were rival, basic manners should be there.
"how's rin?"
sakura slightly widen her eyes at the mentioned of her little sister. "don't worry, she's a strong girl. im sure she's okay." sakura said with a slight tint of sadness. her little sister, yae rin was a sick girl and sakura would do anything for her little sister. she would abide to any wishes that rin want.
saying goodbye to sakura, you two went your separate ways to class. "ahh, there you are." a green hair female taking steps towards you with a mature and annoyed voice. you sweat drop on what's to come from her. knowing mobius, she maybe will hammer words into your head.
"mobius, what's wrong?" you asked with worried voices. "look at your locker." you glanced at your locker — you slightly widen your eyes at the sight of your locker with red pen marker. bad words written on it. your lip turning into a straight line. no expression on your face. you walked towards your locker.
'cheater!'
'freak.'
'traitor.'
and many more.
brushing your hand against some of the words. you went straight to get things to get it clean up. no words spoken between you and mobius. while you were cleaning up, kevin entered the classroom alongside with sae. kevin noticed you crouching down by your locker, scrubbing off things hard.
before you could even finish cleaning it, someone took your wrist that was holding the towel. "who wrote this?" kevin's familiar voice right by your ear. "i don't know." you flatly said, continuing what you were doing after kevin let go off your wrist.
kevin knew all to well about you. if there's a slightest change on you — that means something happened. after class finish, you would probably run off somewhere and kevin will have to find you and drag you back.
sae quietly watched the scene just now. someone wrote bad things on your locker... this is definitely some jealous people that did this. seeing you with a different expression feels weird to sae. as he was used to your backhanded and teasing personality towards him. seeing you so quiet doesn't quite suit you, right.
maybe he will go and find out who. using his fame at school to find out who did it. it's likely that only the 3rd years that did this. if he found out who it is, he wants you to pay him back somehow. not with money.
ding!
it's lunch time now. as kevin expected, as soon as the bell rings — you stood up from your seat and run off to who knows where. just after you left the class, sae soon followed but kevin doesn't care on what he does. "should we go find her now, kevin?" su tapped on kevin's shoulder and kevin nodded.
"she will probably be on the rooftop, archery club or... her little brother's class?" su pondered on the possibility of you being on those three places. you're like a stray cat after something bad happened.
"let's check out the rooftop. she might be hiding in a corner."
"ah... right."
the rooftop have always calms you down. the fresh air upon entering the rooftop of the school. no one to bother you at the rooftop unless someone tried to find you. you felt like you were free on this rooftop, away from the competitive individuals. you went to the railing of the rooftop and just look at the scenery infront of you. you took a deep in and out breath. it was peaceful until someone decided to open a mouth.
"having fun?"
oh, the voice you know so well... you gathered your thoughts before facing him and giving a close eyed smile.
"i was having fun until you came, itoshi-san."
the peaceful time you just have was interrupted by the football prodigy, itoshi sae . one of the selected individuals that was set to be the best. you view him as your rival because he's the only person who gets on your nerves. his snarky remarks and those straightforward, cold personality.
even mobius is not that annoying.
"i never thought that your brother will be chosen, nagi." sae calls you with your last name.
"what do you mean by that? are you implying that my brother doesn't deserve that spot?" you uttered. you don't like it when people doubt that your brother is actually deserving for that spot. you hate people who insult and doubt your little brother. as he was very much deserved for that spot.
"yeah. isn't he that one guy who laze around?" he inquired, he sometimes see your brother lazing around the rooftop — just like you but even if your brother didn't try hard. he managed to get into the top 3 for the first years.
"so what?" your voice turn cold. the moment sae said those words. you weren't the person he knows. those three years of knowing you in this school, you had never look at him with that cold gaze. your kind and lovely facade was falling apart in front of him.
"don't bother talking about my brother like that. fix your relationship with your brother instead." you continued your words before leaving sae's sight. the words you said hit a deep part of sae's heart. he clenched his fist and looked at the direction you just left
"oh, she's not here..." kevin and su looked for you at the rooftop. they even look at every nook and cranny on the rooftop. kevin meet su's eyes and nodded, making their way to the archery club. maybe you were letting off steam there?
'rin went home before me...' sae had recently finished his practice when he coincidentally passed by the archery club practice place. he saw you sitting there with an unreadable face with earbuds connected to your phone.
you noticed his presence and he slightly faltered when he met your eyes. he broke off the eye contact and went on his way to home.
'i better get home too. sei, must be starving.." you stood up from your position and took your bag with you — leaving the school grounds, you planned onto going to the nearest convenience store to buy some ice cream and instant food on the way to home.
the worker greeted you upon on entering the store and, lo an behold, itoshi sae in the store too. an awkward silence was met when you noticed him in the store. you hoped that he was finished with the ice cream after you finished picking instant foods and drinks.
"she's also not here!" kevin exclaimed. "calm down, she's probably at her brother's classroom." su reassured, trying to calm down kevin who was panicking because this is the first time kevin never found you on the first.
"right! let's go!"
what a change of mood.
"ah, [name]-senpai." reo noticed you walking into his and nagi's classroom. you acknowledged his presence and went to take a chair to sit beside your brother.
reo also went to nagi's table and took a chair to sat at. nagi look up from his phone and noticed his sister laying down her head at his table just looking at him. "i ate already, nee-san." he reassured you. "is that so? very good, sei." you ruffled nagi's hair and look at reo. reo tilted his head, awaiting what you're going to say to him.
"bring him melon pan from the cafeteria, medium size only."
"is that what im supposed to do every day at school?"
"ah no. three times in a week bring him that."
"is this like a schedule for nagi..?"
"yeah."
sae walked past your brother's classroom — just simply glancing at the classroom not noticing your head that's in the classroom, right now. the male didn't noticed you but you saw him passing by. 'what is he doing at the 2nd years building? he have no business here.' you pondered the reason he was here at the floor. it couldn't be that he was going to the 1st years building for his brother — the building is on the other way.
"i'll be going now, sei, reo." you bid your goodbye and left the classroom following sae — keeping a distance. 'am i crazy for following him? maybe.' you snapped out of your thoughts and you saw those typical romance manga scene, a senior with a junior.
the junior is probably confessing her undying love towards the senior. a very clichè plot line, and so the senior probably will accept the junior's feelings.
ah, the junior got flatly rejected by the senior. well, that's to be expected. sae is not interested in a relationship in the meantime but why do i feel relieved that the junior got rejected by sae?
1st stage: denial.
"there you are, [name]!" kevin exclaimed when he saw you at your brother's classroom, hanging around there. you turned your head away from nagi and look at kevin with a confused face. "what's wrong?" you replied.
"you know, we went through many challenges to find you and my energy is drained because of you. stop running off to who-knows-where. i don't even know why i always tried to find you but hey atleast in the end i always found you, you stray cat. oh? why am i calling you a stray cat? maybe..." kevin went on rambling about how annoying you are when you get sad, hammering words into you but it came in the right ear and got out of the left ear. you tuned out his voice and look at su for help to get you out of the situation but su just look at you with the 'no, you're not running away' face and shake his head.
nagi watched the two of you throwing remarks at each other back to back and wondered 'nee-san have alot of energy when she's with them...' blinking his eyes.
when you were with your group of friends, you had a different energy with them. when he saw you happily conversing with them at the end of the school day, it was a new sight to see. in the past nagi even accidentally blurted out 'is that really you, nee-san?'
"now let's go back to class." kevin trying to stern his voice so that you would listen to him. "whatever." you rolled your eyes and start walking to class. su and kevin catching with you — just before stepping out of the class, you give your head a turn and smile at nagi, waving at him goodbye and finally make your way to class.
getting closer to the class. su noticed something different, it was noisy than usual. it sounds like people arguing. "it's quite noisy..." su is uncertain if it is people arguing or something good just happened in class.
"what's that group of girls from different class doin in our class... with that itoshi as well." kevin squinted his eyes to get a good look on inside the class before entering with the three of you.
"this is very sudden of y-"
her words got cut off when the three of you entered the class. the class went silent with you guys presence. the faces inside were full of worried, shocked, unbothered, annoyed, angered faces.
"what were you trying to say?" sae's usual nonchalant voice is there. what is he doing? is he trying to provoke them? "aren't you doing too much? doing vandalism that is." sae continued to provoke the girls. were their the people who did those things to your locker? even if their did, why would sae go out of his way for this?
"like i said, why are you accusing us?!" the 'leader' of the girls gritted her teeth. "why? because you guys are the one that did it." sae glared at them and they stiffened up — averting their eyes away from sae. one of the girls suddenly met eye contact with you and jumped a little bit, quickly broke the eye contact from your staring.
"it's enough now." you finally spoke up and make your way to them. the girls took a step back from you and you noticed it. you noticed that the girls are sweating at this point. one of them got their palms clenched up, one of them just staring into the floor.
"nagi, we're innocent! we would never do that to your locker."
"bingo."
"eh?"
you scoffed and turn your head to sae, he was starring daggers at the girls but now have turned his attention to you. he tried to open his mouth but you stop him by putting your hand up.
now your attention is on the girls. "now i know who did those things at my locker." the girls widened their eyes and look down. "when i entered the class, you guys didn't mentioned anything about locker. itoshi-san only mentioned vandalism but when i make my way to you guys, you suddenly mentioned my locker — that was vandalized this morning." you continued. they tried to say something but words won't come out of their mouth.
"as far as i know, no one knew of this except for the people that was in the class this morning. aren't you girls from the other class?"
"we-"
"just admit it. you guys are the one that did it."
"y-yes... we a-are the one.. that did i-it." they stammered over their words. "get out of the class and don't mention this to anyone." you huffed and let out of a sigh. they immediately got out of the class, hurrying their steps.
Tumblr media
"you guys go ahead. i have other things to do." you said to your group of friends.
it was already the end of the day except for some people practicing for future competitions like the soccer team. 'now, i should go to the field.' you hastily make your way to the field just to talk to that guy.
you saw the green field in your vision and the soccer team taking a break. you took a breath because you were going too fast going down the stairs. nagi noticed you coming up to the field and stood up. "nee-san, what are you doing here?" nagi tug on your uniform sleeve.
"because i want to talk to itoshi sae. when will the practice end?"
"in another 30 minutes..."
"ill wait."
"are we walking back home together, nee-san?" nagi looked at you with curious eyes. "yeah, we are." you smile at nagi and tap his hand to get back to training. you sit at a bench, waiting for the 30 minutes to end.
"why did you do that?"
"just because i want to." sae walked away from his position after the girls got out of the classroom and sat at his usual seat. you furrowed your eyes but let what happened earlier passed.
"i wonder why he helped me..." you muttered under your breath. you almost curled up your skirt, remembering what happened today. you took out your phone to pass the time, texting with the group.
mei's bf : @[nickname], did you get home yet????
you : no. im waiting for nagi.
personal doctor : stay safe. kevin wouldn't shut up about today. im going crazy.
mei's bf : that's why you shouldn't be my roommate 😒
personal doctor: stfu, i was forced too...
mei's bf: WHAT THE HELL. SINCE WHEN DO YOU CURSE ...
scientist : oh, did that issue was already solved?
you : yes, lol.
scientist : stop being a troublemaker like kevin.
mei's bf : ok, mobius...
you : LMAOOO 😭 i won't. no worries :x
the texting went on about the day and other topics. you check the time on your phone 'there's 7 minutes left' and you turn off your phone. you stand up and walk towards the field, the reddish brown hair male see you walking towards the field and remembered what your brother said to him.
"my sister wants to talk to you." nagi spoke only those words and disappeared from sae's sight. sae was dumbfounded on why you want to talk to him but regardless didn't ask why.
he sling his bag across his shoulders and walk towards you. "what is it?" his voice surprised you and you quickly look back, letting a sigh, you point towards a quiet place and sae's nod.
nagi and some of the team members watch the two of you walking together. otoya put a hand on nagi's shoulder "bro, is your sister abandoning you with him." one of them muttered under their breath "why is nii-chan with her..." nagi heard that and look at the person who said it, furrowing his eyebrows.
'i wonder what will they talk about...'
you halt your steps and look at sae — sae took a step back, looking everywhere but not your eyes. "look me in the eyes." you stern, you want to talk to him while he is looking directly in your eyes. his eyes were already captivating enough for you to get lost in but this isn't the time to do that.
he sigh, and look at your eyes "happy?". you shot a tiny smile and nod. "thank you, itoshi-san." you express your gratitude to him for today and continue "thank you for finding the people who did it. it it were me, i wouldn't do it that way. we may kinda start it rough in the first place but the past is past, right? can i repay you somehow for today?"
the ghost of a smile flitted across his handsome feature.
"i would like to say sorry for that day. doubting your brother." to be honest, you didn't expect him to apologize for that day. you were baffled but kept your composure "it's okay now, im not that mean to not forgive you. forgive me for saying 'that' too but before you said anything, why did you do that? helping me.." your voice turned lower and lower when you got to the last part.
"because you are a great rival. i wouldn't want my own rival to be saddened because of a stupid jealousy, right?"
"ah."
'im a great rival to him? wait wait wait... what is this warmth feelings. a great rival... this is such a hassle to think about.. what does my face look like right now?' your mind is in scramble after the male said those few words. i mean, this guy that's in front of you have too much ego in his ass, so for him to admit this..
you were 3 points away from having a full mark and that guy itoshi sae got a full mark. you fix up your hair after ruffling it a bit because of the frustration that you didn't get full mark. might as well ask that guy on how he got the answer, right?
you walk up to itoshi sae and he noticed your presence, raising an eyebrow for the sudden approach and look at the paper in your hand. "itoshi-san mind explaining how you got that answer?" you ask with the most polite voice you can muster to him. he hold up his hand and you give your paper to him. he scan your answer and give it back.
"come closer if you want to hear the explanation." he nonchalantly said. does this guy know what he just said? nevermind. you shook off that thought and scoot closer to the male. he start explaining on how he got the answer and you from time to time ask him questions.
"ahh.. so it is that easy."
"well, not my fault that you are reckless at this easy question."
what did that guy just said? this man... if we weren't in class i would've flip him off. "haha, you're right... thank you, itoshi.." you lightly laugh and got away from his table.
you cross your arm "well, you flattered me. tomorrow, tell me what you want." you quickly walk away from sae and meet up with your younger brother. the latter only watch you getting smaller and smaller. the blush on his ears were so evident, luckily there is no one around.
'what should i make her repay me with?'
that was the only thing on sae's mind while walking back home.
you jump on your bed, opening your chats messages that was flooding. looking at the notification, new notif come and it was from itoshi sae. has he finally make up his mind and decided to tell you right now?
opening his message, you write out your reply.
bad hairstyle : home yet?
you : yes.
bad hairstyle : i have already thought off what i want from you.
you : oh... what is it?
bad hairstyle : can it be anything?
you : no. i already read too much things that happened when the character said "ill do anything!"
you : think of it carefully.
bad hairstyle : tutor me.
you : what.
bad hairstyle : are you blind?
you : my vision is completely fine. anyway, are you serious????
bad hairstyle : what? just because im already smart, you don't want to tutor me?
you : do you even have time for this?
bad hairstyle : ill make it work into my schedule.
you : fine. i don't have any objection anyway.
what's wrong with this guy? suddenly wanting you to tutor him. is he drunk or something... whatever.
ding!
oh.. at the library — more privacy there.

Being in the Danny Phantom fandom has enriched my life in many ways. Artistically, through learning new drawing styles and writing tones and genres—but also scientifically. Specifically, it introduced me to the works of Carl Sagan.
How? Well, I needed something for Vlad and Danny to be watching in chapter 12 of Familiar. I randomly chose Cosmos, the series written and hosted by Carl Sagan. Like any obsessive good author, I ended up watching the episode that featured in the story. This is neat stuff, I thought. I'll have to come back and watch the whole series later.
Well, I did. And I found a copy of Sagan's Billions and Billions: Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the Millennium at my local library. It's been a long time since I read nonfiction for the sake of learning, but I fell back into the groove easily (which reopened the door to—and rekindled an interest in—science and continuing my informal education). In short, I ended up loving Carl.
I'm close to the end of Billions of Billions, which has occupied a semi-permanent spot on my bedside table for several weeks. Last night, as I went to turn off my lamp, I reached over the back cover of the book, upon which Carl's kind, smiling photograph looked wistfully to the upper corner.
I wish I had known him, I thought.
Carl died of complications of MDS in December 1996.
That night, as usual, I had dreams. As one segued into another, I found myself wandering around a classroom laboratory with several other students, where apparently we were gathering for an after-school club of sorts. (I think it was some kind of week-long extracurricular event.) As I was trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing, I heard a voice say, "There you are."
I turned and saw Carl Sagan—my professor. He was smiling.
"We've missed you. It's been a week."
I can't imagine, even in dreams, skipping a class taught by the Carl Sagan. Before I could stammer out an excuse, he waved his hand.
"Don't worry about it. At least you made it to the last meeting. Come on, it's just starting."
I don't know what happened after that. Everything was put on fast forward and 1x speed only returned as the meeting adjourned and students began to disperse. I felt as if I'd missed out on everything—a recurring theme in most of my dreams, especially academic-based ones.
And then Carl, still smiling, approached me. The next thing I knew, he was hugging me tightly. Stunned (and elated, I can't lie), I hugged him back. He had mass and warmth. I felt the bones of his back and scapulae beneath the thick velveteen layers of his brown corduroy jacket. His chin pressed my shoulder.
"I love you," he said, and I could hear his patient smile.
I think I responded. I don't know. I was overwhelmed. We parted, he turned, and disappeared. No goodbye or farewell, no instruction on what to do next. Just the words I love you glowing inside me like a new star.
Would he have said something like that in reality? I don't know. All I know is that this was my dream and he did.
Then this particular dream episode ended and I reluctantly moved on to the next one.
I don't put much stock in the supernatural these days, but I it was nice to have my wish of "meeting" Carl Sagan granted in this small, abstract way.

_______________________________________________
Mingyu came home from university yesterday.
Of course, you're only finding out right now. Your name was just called so you could go up and receive your diploma. When you got up, eople cheered and clapped, but one voice was much louder than the rest.
You looked to the crowd and your heart rate picked up immediately. You could spot him even in the large pool of bodies. He towered over them and was cheering so obnoxiously loud. He was seated next to your family and even from a distance you could tell he was smiling.
You nearly tripped when you went to receive your diploma. Your heart continued to beat out your chest, he came to see you on your big day.
He's here. He's really here.
He's flown in plenty of times, Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break, but now he'll be home for the whole summer. And next time he leaves, you'll be going with him.
For the most part at least.
You're not going to the same school for university, however your schools are basically right across the street from one another. While you did love Mingyu, you didn't want to base your future entirely around him, especially when it came to your education. This way, you two could still be close while independently pursuing your own education.
The breaks he's visited for have been nice, but entirely too short. All the times he's come home it's been picnics, walks around the neighborhood and sneaky kisses.
When he came home from winter break, your families took a weekend trip up in a cabin to go skiing. He taught you how to snowboard and snuck into your bed to keep you warm every night.
When he came home most recently during spring break, he spent every single day with you. He took you on walks to the pond to feed the ducks and on midnight drives into the city.
It was always hard to say goodbye when he left, but you knew he'd be home again soon. He'd always come back to you.
You accept the printed document, heading back to your seat anxiously. He knows that you know he's here. Your heart swells when you think about him. You're restless in your seat for the remainder of the ceremony.
There still wasn't a label on your relationship. He knew you were his and that he was yours. And he made sure it was known even in university.
Obviously Mingyu caught the eye of many girls back at school, but he no longer entertained the attention he received. He was polite, but made sure it was known that he 'had a girl back at home.'
He never gave you any reason to worry or doubt. He called and texted as much as he could while he was away. You'd often fall asleep on FaceTime together while you studied together. You looked forward to the random texts you'd receive from him while he was bored in one of his classes.
For you, school was so different without Mingyu and the boys. You kept to yourself more, much like before you'd befriended the guys. You focused on your academics, but you were content with your life. Things were good and you were happy.
By the time spring had come around again you were still managing the baseball team. Mingyu was always the first to hear about how each game went and all about the freshman who was the new starting pitcher you teased was better than him.
When the ceremony finally ends you're quick to search through the crowd of people for him. It's loud and everyone around you is celebrating. However, his height makes him easy to find.
He spots you from a distance and smiles. You feel your chest swell with joy. You nearly jump into his arms and he accepts you with open arms.
"Hey kid," he beams, wrapping his arms around your frame tightly. "I missed you."
You swear you could cry right now.
"I missed you too," you say into his chest.
His heart is beating so fast, you can hear it. It's beating so fast it just might be in sync with yours.
"I'm so proud of you," he kisses your forehead.
You pull away from the hug, looking up at him. He looks down at you with pure love filling his eyes. He's staring at his entire world right now and she looks beautiful.
Your heart stops when he looks at you. You don't think you'll every fully get used to this feeling. You've been seeing his face, stared into those brown orbs millions of times over the years yet now, your stomach does cartwheels and it feels like you can't breathe.
It scares you, but you love it.
He finally lets you go so you can have a moment with the rest of your families. His mother hands you a bouquet of flowers she claims Mingyu picked out as they congratulate you. Your mom offers to go out for a celebratory dinner, but you politely decline and tell her you'd rather go home.
__
You and Mingyu were quick to rush upstairs into your room as soon as you got home. You jumped onto the bed where he joined you and held you close.
The two of you talk for a while, cuddled up against one another. You two lay at the top of your bed, his arm around yours as you both sit up against the pillows resting against your headboard.
"The boys are all coming back soon," he tells you as he plays with your fingers.
"Really?" you perk up.
He nods. "Yeah, Hoshi texted and said he's flying in today and I know Josh got back like two days ago. And everyone else has been and is continuing to come home this week. We'll all have to get together soon."
"Yeah," you cuddle into his chest. "That would be nice. I missed being with all of you guys."
He plants a kiss on your forehead. "I know, they all miss you too."
You look up at him, admiring the features of his face. He looks down at you, scrunching his nose as you stare at him. Staring at him for seconds felt like hours with how you got lost in him.
"What?" he asks.
"You still haven't cut your hair," you comment, allowing your fingers to comb through his curls.
"You told me you liked it long," he shrugs.
You smile. "I do, it looks so good on you."
He licks his lips. "Then I'll never cut my hair again, just for you."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah," he smirks.
He doesn't break eye contact, not for a second. You begin to feel hot under his gaze. He's staring at you silently, admiring and taking in all your features. Fuck, he's so close to you.
Your stomach is twisting in knots. His lips are so pretty and kissible, so close. He's so fucking tempting. But he stops himself before anything can happen.
He can see the flicker of disappointment in your eyes, but you understand. He doesn't want anything to happen until you're officially together, he wants to do things the right way with you.
__
All the boys were finally home now and insisting everyone hang out. The groupchat decided on a barbeque at Hoshi's and a swim in the lake once it got dark.
It felt good to catch up with the boys. You hadn't talked to them as much as you did Mingyu while they were away at school.
Wonwoo even came to the function. There was no bad blood or anythgin, but you kept your distance. He did talk to you for a bit, told you about how school was going for him, even mentioned something about the girl he'd been seeing.
You were happy for him, truly. Didn't want to relish too much of the past, especially when you had a six foot pitching futre ahead of you. Wonwoo and Mingyu didn't really talk either, they managed to keep it cordial with no tension.
Life was good.
You couldn't complain about anything. You ate good food and shared laughs with your friends. They've become like another family to you, and for that you'll always be grateful. You're glad things still feel normal despite everything that's happened in the past.
You knew for sure you'd found your soulmates.
__
Mingyu's been taking pictures of you under the stars. You all walked to the park to look at the night sky, but you looked so pretty Mingyu couldn't help himself.
The night has settled down, aside from Dino and Minghao who seem to be chasing each other around the park.
You've finally come to join him, sitting down next to him on the blanket he has sprawled out on the grass.
"You cold?" he asks.
You shrug. "Not really"
He pulls off his jacket and wraps it around your body. "Yah, don't lie to me. You were shivering."
You giggle to yourself. "Thank you."
"Of course," he wraps his arms around your side, pulling you closer to him.
Your heartbeat is all kinds of abnormal right now. The night has become comfortably quiet, aside from the faint chatter and laughter of the other boys surrounding you.
You look up at the stars, admiring the view. The night sky is shining, stars illuminating the darkness above you. Your head lay on his shoulder and despite the beauty above him, the one beside his has all his attention.
He can taste the words on his tongue, all the things he wants to say to you. How you make him feel, how pretty you are, how much he loves you.
"Kid," he breathes out.
"Hmm?" you lift your head.
"I love you."
Your eyelids flutter at his sudden confession. You tilt your head so your eyes meet his.
"I love you too," you respond.
He smiles. "I know I told you this before, but I've felt this way about you since we were kids, before I could even understand what it was. And I've waited so many years to hear you say that, you've no idea how rewarding it is for me to hear that. However, I've waited too long for this,"
"For what?" you question.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" he asks.
There's not a single trace of hesitation in your voice. "Yes."
He's smiling so hard right now. Years and years of pining. Girlfriends, boyfriends, meaningless hookups, and so much confusion. It's been frustrating, but it paid off. You're really his now, his girlfriend.
He'd held back so much with you. He didn't want to rush into anything without being ready, needed the security you deserve. Aside from the few stolen kisses from the other times he was home, he wanted to be on his best behaviour. He wasn't going to be like his old self, he wanted to put his best foot forward for you. You deserve it.
Last time he called you his girlfriend, you were 7 told told him 'ew.' But now? You can't wipe that smile off your face.
He's quick to kiss you, His hand lay on your cheek, thumb rubbing small circles as your lips move against one another. There's fireworks setting off in your body. His lips are soft and pillowy, filling your body with warmth.
You were intoxicating and he didn't want to stop. You were wearing strawberry chaptsick, he could taste the sweetness as he kissed you. You followed his movements like a mirror, kissing him back with just as much passion and love.
Your breathing turned shallow and you pressed your body closer against his. The heat of his breath agaisnt your lips was making a fire run rampant through your blood. Something fluttered in your stomach when he kissed you, it felt like you were floating.
You'd never been kissed like this before, not even by Mingyu himself.
And damn, did it feel good.
It's crazy how different it feels to kiss him now that you've come to terms with your feelings. Everything is so much mroe authentic and passionate.
He finally pulled away for breath, both of you panting softly with smiles that were hard to hide. He pecked your lips a few times before finally giving you space. Your head felt like it was spinning and you were sure you'd fall over if you stood up.
"Oh my gosh," you breathe out.
He licks his lips quickly. "I don't think I'll ever get tired of that."
You let out a breathy chuckle, allowed your head to fall back onto his shoulder. "Me either."
It felt like you were on cloud 9 and you never wanted to come down.
He laughs to himself before nudging you lightly with his shoulder. "You like-like me."
You scrunch your nose, pushing him lightly. "You idiot, we're way past that."
He pulls your entire body into his arms. "You like–like me!" he teases again.
"Geez Mingyu, how old are you?" you laugh.
"I'm just happy," he grins. "You make me happy."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."

A quick guide on what different titles mean in my posts
(Since education AND healthcare systems vary around the world).
Medical Student (4.5-5 years)
You can get into medical school straight out of high school. College degrees do exist, but they are not the norm, not for medicine, and not for any career, tbh.
You fist 2-3 years are mostly theory. Calculus, chemistry, biology, anatomy, histology, embriology, physiology, pathology, physiopathology, microbiology, pharmacology…. That period end with semiology, and you get a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Science.
Then, for the next 2 years, you have your clinicals, in which you spend half of the day in the hospital, with patients, and half the day in class, but definitely more focused on patient care and management.
Med student in clinicals = baby of the team (most of the time).
When you finish, you get your Academic Degree, Licenciate in Medicine.
Medical Intern (1.5-2 years)
No longer a student, you are now in your professional practice. Although you are technically still in med school in your university, you can say goodbye to classes, since you’re now a worker.
Probably bottom of the food chain, and probably does all the paperwork that nobody wants to do, but it’s a period where you gain a lot of independence and knowledge through work.
When you finish, you get your Professional Title, Médico Cirujano, but also need to pass a national test (EUNACOM) in order to be able to work.
Once you are a Doctor, you can work with that, or you can specialize.
Resident Doctor
A doctor, who is both working and studying towards a specialty.
Staff
Doctor who is on charge of a team. Tends to be an specialist.
Other titles that may cause confusion:
CNA: I use CNA to refer to TENS (Técnico de Enfermería de Nivel Superior). Technical degree (2.5 years). Takes care of patient’s basic needs, vital signs, may administer non-prescription medications.
Scrub tech: An specialized TENS. Takes care of the surgical instrumental and the sterile field in the OR.
Other TENS specializations: (that aren’t shared with other workers) Ambulance paramedic, anesthesia tech, trauma tech (takes care of plasters).
Medical Technologist: University degree (5Y). In charge of handling the machines and advanced technology equipment. They have 5 sub-specialties: ENT, ophthalmology, morphophysiopathology, blood bank and radiology.
Kinesiologist: University degree (5Y). They encapsulate both Physical Therapy and Respiratory Therapy.
Midwife: University Degree (5Y). Kind of like L&D nurses. Also in charge of reproductive health (i.e inserts IUDs, tests for STIs). Can assist births without a doctor if uncomplicated.
Other professionals that may not need further explanation:
Nurse.
Nutritionist.
Speech therapy.
Occupational therapy.

2nd April
Dear Batman,
I am a BEAST. Please forget about that dreadful letter I sent you last week--I was feeling terribly lonely and miserable and sore-throaty the night I wrote. I didn't know it, but I was just sickening for tonsillitis and grippe, and lots of things mixed. I'm in the infirmary now, and have been here for six days; this is the first time they would let me sit up and have a pen and paper. The head nurse is very bossy. But I've been thinking about it all the time and I shan't get well until you forgive me.
I have a bandage tied around my head in rabbit's ears. It’s thoroughly pitiful looking. Doesn't that arouse your sympathy? I am having sublingual gland swelling. And I've been studying physiology all the year without ever hearing of sublingual glands. How futile a thing is education! I can't write anymore; I get rather shaky when I sit up too long. Please forgive me for being impertinent and ungrateful.
Yours with love and many, many apologies,
Y/N
Tumblr media
THE INFIRMARY
4th April
Dearest Batman,
I don’t think it's possible to feel more guilty than I do now that I am on the mend. I have written the harshest words to the man who I owe everything. And now, on my bedside table, sit the most beautiful bouquet I have never set my eyes on!
And not only did I receive flowers, but a note as well! You are not bald! The joy I feel may eclipse my guilt entirely!
Yesterday evening just towards dark, when I was sitting up in bed looking out at the rain and feeling awfully bored with life in a great institution, the nurse appeared with a long white box addressed to me, and filled with the most beautiful, colorful bouquet. And much nicer still, it contained a card with a message written in a funny little uphill backhand (but one which shows a great deal of character). Thank you a thousand times. Your flowers make the first real, true present I ever received in my life. If you want to know what a baby I am I lay down and cried because I was so happy.
Now that I am sure you read my letters, I'll make them much more interesting, so they'll be worth keeping in a safe with red tape around them--only please take out that dreadful one and burn it up. I'd hate to think that you ever read it over. Thank you for making a very sick, cross, miserable Freshman cheerful. Probably you have lots of loving family and friends, and you don't know what it feels like to be alone. But I do. To make up for my behavior, I have a secret I've been keeping from you. I hope you won’t take everything away from me, but I feel so awful I must find a way to make it right.
Goodbye--I'll promise never to be horrid again because now I know you're a real person; also I'll promise never to bother you with any more questions. Do you still hate girls?
Yours forever,
Y/N
Tumblr media
Bruce felt a weight lift from his chest as he read the letter. As soon as he saw the sign offs and her sending him love, it was a relief after a week of headaches. Y/N must have written the first letter before the flowers had reached her, because if there was one thing Bruce knew, she would have gushed…or at least he hoped she would. Instead of sending Alfred out to fetch them, he found himself at a flower shop. He had studied the language of flowers and had carefully crafted a message to her. Purple hyacinths for regret and blue for making peace. The lily of the valley was symbolic of his humility and hope that Y/N would return to happiness. Yellow roses showed his hope of friendship and the one flower he was nervous about: pink carnation. The message was never forget you and Bruce was worried it was too intimate a message. While Y/N may not know what he was saying or that he was even communicating, Bruce was reaching out in all of his stunted emotional intelligence.
Tumblr media
8th hour, Monday
Dear Batman,
I hope you aren't the Trustee who sat on the toad? It went off—I was told—with quite a pop, so probably he was a fatter Trustee.
Do you remember the little dugout places with gratings over them by the laundry windows in the Bowery Home? Every spring when the frog season opened, we used to form a collection of toads and keep them in those window holes; and occasionally they would spill over into the laundry, causing a very pleasurable commotion on wash days. We were severely punished for our activities in this direction, but in spite of all discouragement the toads would collect.
And one day—well, I won't bore you with particulars—but somehow, one of the fattest, biggest, juiciest toads got into one of those big leather arm chairs in the Trustees' room, and that afternoon at the Trustees' meeting—But I dare say you were there and recall the rest?
Looking back dispassionately after a period of time, I will say that punishment was merited, and—if I remember rightly—adequate. I don't know why I am in such a reminiscent mood except that spring and the reappearance of toads always awakens the old acquisitive instinct. The only thing that keeps me from starting a collection is the fact that no rule exists against it.
Tumblr media
Bruce remembered that particular incident fondly. Thankfully, the trustee had not been he. It had been Thomas Elliot who had the misfortune of the toad. Knowing that Y/N had been part in that attack on the odious man had a massive smile growing on Bruce’s face. He returned to the letter, hoping to hear more about her day.
Tumblr media
After chapel, Thursday
What do you think is my favorite book? Just now, I mean; I change every three days. Wuthering Heights. Emily Bronte was quite young when she wrote it, and had never been outside of Haworth churchyard. She had never known any men in her life; how could she imagine a man like Heathcliffe?
I couldn't do it, and I'm quite young and never outside the John Grier Asylum—I've had every chance in the world. Sometimes a dreadful fear comes over me that I'm not a genius. Will you be awfully disappointed, if I don't turn out to be a great author? In the spring when everything is so beautiful and green and budding, I feel like turning my back on lessons, and running away to play with the weather. There are such lots of adventures out in the fields! It's much more entertaining to live books than to write them.
“AHHHHHH!”
That was a shriek which brought Harriet and Babs and (for a disgusted moment) the Senior from across the hall. It was caused by a massivecentipede. Just as I had finished the last sentence and was thinking what to say next, it fell off the ceiling and landed at my side. I tipped two cups off the tea table in trying to get away. Barbs whacked it with the back of my hair brush—which I shall never be able to use again—and killed the front end, but the rear fifty feet ran under the bureau and escaped. This dormitory, owing to its age and ivy-covered walls, is full of centipedes. They are dreadful creatures. I'd rather find a tiger under the bed.
Friday, 9.30 p.m.
Such a lot of troubles! I didn't hear the rising bell this morning, then I broke my shoestring while I was hurrying to dress and dropped my collar button down my neck. I was late for breakfast and also for the first-hour recitation. I forgot to take any blotting paper and my fountain pen leaked.
In trigonometry the Professor and I had a disagreement touching a little matter of logarithms. On looking it up, I find that she was right. We had mutton stew and pie-plant for lunch—hate 'em both; they taste like the asylum. The post brought me nothing but bills (though I must say that I never do get anything else; my family are not the kind that write). In English class this afternoon we had an unexpected written lesson. This was it:
I asked no other thing, No other was denied. I offered being for it; The mighty merchant smiled.
Brazil? He twirled a button Without a glance my way: “But, madam, is there nothing else That we can show today?”
That is a poem. I don't know who wrote it or what it means. It was simply printed out on the blackboard when we arrived and we were ordered to comment upon it. When I read the first verse I thought I had an idea—The Mighty Merchant was a divinity who distributes blessings in return for virtuous deeds—but when I got to the second verse and found him twirling a button, it seemed a blasphemous supposition, and I hastily changed my mind. The rest of the class was in the same predicament; and there we sat for three-quarters of an hour with blank paper and equally blank minds. Getting an education is an awfully wearing process!
But this didn't end the day. There's worse to come.
It rained so we couldn't play golf, but had to go to the gymnasium instead. The girl next to me banged my elbow with an club. I got home to find that the box with my new blue spring dress had come, and the skirt was so tight that I couldn't sit down. Friday is sweeping day, and the maid had mixed all the papers on my desk. We had “tombstone'' for dessert (milk and gelatin flavored with vanilla). We were kept in the chapel twenty minutes later than usual to listen to a speech about feminine women. And then—just as I was settling down with a sigh of well-earned relief to The Portrait of a Lady, a girl named Ackerly, a dough-faced, deadly, unintermittently stupid girl, who sits next to me in Latin because her name begins with A (I wish Mother Waller had named me Zabriski), came to ask if Monday's lesson commenced at paragraph 69 or 70, and stayed ONE HOUR. She has just gone.
Did you ever hear of such a discouraging series of events? It isn't the big troubles in life that require character. Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh—I really think that requires spirit.
It's the kind of character that I am going to develop. I am going to pretend that all life is just a game which I must play as skilfully and fairly as I can. If I lose, I am going to shrug my shoulders and laugh—also if I win. Anyway, I am going to be a sport. You will never hear me complain again, Batsy dear, because Harriett wears silk stockings and centipedes drop off the wall.
Yours ever,
Y/N
P.s. Answer soon. How am I to know what to read if I don’t know your favorite book?

Hey, so yall probably been wondering where I've been, huh? Well it's a long story and I do like to write stories so let me begin:
~ I've started my sophomore year of college and it's been destroying my mental health and my academics lmaooo
~I've got a boyfriend now (soon to be fiance) so that's cool
~I'm transferring colleges and moving in December with said boyfriend
~I've switched majors so now I want to be a psychology major instead of teaching however I switched too late and I'm still taking one education class and I have to do observation hours yay me
~it's just really kicking my ass man
~We think I got Premenstrual Dsyphoric Disorder along with depression but i cant afford to go to the doctor to find out so that's a fun one
And most importantly...
~I don't have the need to write anymore. I used it as an escape to get away and I wrote about characters so I can imagined being loved. Now with my boyfriend he is everything and almost everyone I've written about and I no longer need that escape. I'm happy now and I've moved on.
I really hate to upset anyone but I've found my happiness outside of writing and I hope you all understand. This won't be a goodbye forever, just a goodbye for the time being.

Please please please read this. The things I am going to say below need more attention than they are getting.
The USA sucks right now. Florida, for example.
This is the state that I live in. And I am fearing for my safety as of now. For one, I couldn’t even name all of the anti LGBTQIA+ laws and bills that have been passed. Some of my coworkers who have kids (and are apart of the LGBTQIA+ community) are risking having their kids taken away from them.
If your kid is in preschool all the way up to eighth grade, sorry! They’re “too young” to be exposed to anything remotely related to sexual orientation or gender identity. Preschoolers and all of the younger kids, I can get behind that a little. But middle schoolers? Sure, maybe they shouldn’t get top surgery or anything (not saying they aren’t allowed to) but they don’t have to be shielded from that kind of stuff.
And we have a gender affirming care ban, and an anti transgender bathroom bill.
And academic freedom? Thanks to our Governor, Ron DeSantis, say goodbye to that. Oh, and your healthcare? You can be discriminated against by a nurse or doctor or denied medical care by your religious, moral, or ethical beliefs.
I am going to go into detail about some of these bills, so be prepared to read.
Expansion Bill (HB 1069): In an intentional effort to erase transgender and non-binary people from the curriculum, HB 1069 bans instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity from Pre-K through Grade 8, creates an anti-LGBTQ+ definition of sex based on reproductive function, and would force school staff and students to deadname and misgender one another. In April, Florida’s Board of Education also voted to expand Gov. DeSantis’s shameful “Don’t Say LGBTQ+” bill from 2022 to all grades.
Extreme Gender Affirming Care Ban (SB 254): Even among the crowded field of extreme and damaging bans on best practice, age-appropriate health care, this bill stands out as particularly mean-spirited. SB 254 would penalize providers by inflicting criminal penalties (including felony penalties) on providers who give gender-affirming care; it would take licenses away from those providers; and it would prohibit Medicaid from covering gender-affirming care for transgender youth or adults. It would also forbid public funds, including those of a public university, public hospital, city or county, and Medicaid, from being used to provide benefits that include gender-affirming care – for transgender people of all ages. And – uniquely – it allows the state to use gender-affirming care or the “risk” of such care for a child as a reason to give Florida family courts exceptional jurisdiction to set aside another state’s custody determination. By singing this bill, DeSantis is disrespecting the United States Constitution as well as the rule of law, not to mention transgender Floridians, their families, and their medical care providers.
Anti-Trans Bathroom Bill (HB 1521): HB 1521 criminalizes transgender people for using the restroom that matches their gender identity. The bill prohibits gender-inclusive restrooms and changing facilities in schools, public shelters, healthcare facilities, and jails.
License to Discriminate in Healthcare (SB 1580): This bill will allow healthcare providers and insurers to deny a patient care on the basis of religious, moral, or ethical beliefs. It creates a license to discriminate by allowing healthcare employers to discriminate in hiring, and it bars medical Boards from disciplining doctors for spreading misinformation
So far in 2023, HRC is opposing more than 520 anti-LGBTQ+ bills that have been introduced in statehouses across the country. More than 220 of those bills would specifically restrict the rights of transgender people, the highest number of bills targeting transgender people in a single year to date. This year, HRC is tracking:
More than 125 gender-affirming care bans — bills that would prevent transgender youth from being able to access age-appropriate, medically-necessary, best-practice health care; this year, 14 have already become law in Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Dakota, Utah, Iowa, Idaho, Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, and Oklahoma;
More than 30 anti-transgender bathroom bills filed;
More than 100 anti-LGBTQ+ curriculum censorship bills, and;
45 anti-LGBTQ+ drag performance ban bills.
By comparison, last year in 2022 politicians in statehouses across the country introduced 315 anti-LGBTQ+ bills, 29 of which were enacted into law. These efforts — the result of a coordinated push led by national anti-LGBTQ+ groups, which deployed vintage discriminatory tropes seeking to slander, malign, and stigmatize LGBTQ+ people — only yielded a less than 10% success rate, as more than 90% of anti-LGBTQ+ bills were defeated. The majority of the discriminatory bills – 149 bills – targeted the transgender and non-binary community, with the majority targeting children. By the end of the 2022 state legislative season, a record 17 bills attacking transgender and non-binary children were enacted into law.
I have done my research. I know the stuff that I am talking about.
Oh! And we have something to else to worry about as fanfiction writers and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The KOSA bill.
KOSA, or K O S A stands for Kids Online Safety Act. This bill will be presented to Congress in about a month or fronting it as a way to keep kids safe online or to give parents ways to regulate what their kids are accessing online.
You might be thinking right now, why is this a problem?
We have to listen to what they are not directly saying out loud. Because surprise surprise!
The people who actually wrote the bill are extremely transphobic and homophobic. Republicans are looking for ways to censor the internet, but only in ways that push their beliefs forward and everyone that does not fall in line with that are going to be deemed as a groomer or a predator.
Which is incredibly rhetoric to be spreading.
Any site that has any LGBT topics like AO3, Wattpad, Tumblr, fanfiction in general, will fall as victims to this act.
And it has bipartisan support, so that means support from both Democratic and Republican sides are being like “yeah let’s get this out there”.
So who are they targeting? Platforms such as Wattpad, TikTok, Twitter, and AO3. And this bill, if passed, could possibly take down AO3 if set into motion.
Remember how bad the uproar was when AO3 was under the DDoS attack? What if it was all just gone? This bill is basically breaking the first amendment: Freedom of RAPPS. (Religion, Assembly, Press, Petition, and Speech.)
Here is some more information about the KOSA bill here.
If parents don’t want their kids doing things they shouldn’t online, the parents should handle it. Not the government.
Come on. It’s fucking 2023. And there are probably some people out there who aren’t against this bill and against LGBTQIA+ members saying “oh this generation has gone so downhill” or “back in my day we didn’t have trans or gays”. No, no. You did.
They were just so closeted out of the fear of being prejudiced against. And now that people are coming out of the closet, your bigot and outdated mindset doesn’t know what to do.
People and children are being prejudiced against for no damn reason. What’s the point of it all? So the conservatives can have their way? If you try to get rid of something, it’s just going to go underground.
Like all of the controversy with abortion. So a 12 year old has to be forced to push out a baby when their body isn’t physically ready, but as soon as the baby is born you don’t give a flying fuck about what happens to it.
“Abortion is murder!” And killing the mother in the process of birth isn’t? What if a child got raped? Would you be on the living, breathing host’s side, or the unborn fetus’s side? What if having a baby is detrimental to their health? What then?
Would you say having an abortion is fine if the host will die? But if it’s an 11 or 12 year old they have to give birth? Where do you draw the line? Cause I don’t fucking see it.
Most of this stuff isn’t just in Florida, it’s the whole country.
Please reblog and share this with your friends, I don’t care if you have zero or 20k followers. Please. We need to get this out there.
