In part due to this excellent Instagram post and in part due to *motions at everything,* I’ve been thinking a lot about the proud tradition of respectful arguing in Judaism. Not only does respectful arguing, of course, tie into “two Jews, three opinions,” I also think respectful arguing is a facet of why I, as a Jew, have been so confused and horrified by pro-Hamas discourse.
Because what these people (and bots) do isn’t respectful arguing.
It’s name-calling.
It’s using words incorrectly, as if weidling a loaded word enough times makes the false accusation true.
It’s straw man fallacies and red herrings and attempts at “gotcha!” that don’t make sense.
Respectful arguing is something I love about being Jewish. I love how respectful argument participants work together to distinguish fact from opinion in an effort not to win but to learn through what might perhaps more accurately be called cooperative arguing because both sides understand the shared goal of broadening our minds and perspectives.
And the fact that these pro-Hamas people (and bots) want to spew ugliness and create their own reality instead of engaging in the beneficial work of uncovering complexity and nuance and varied perspective and actual historical and current realities … that’s something deeply — and inarguably — disturbing.

In The Interim
I must have read at least a dozen variations on the 'ancient and forgotten order of something or other is revived by the Chosen One and some ancient mentor or something' story, in which ancient relics or fortresses or holy places usually play a significant part. I've often wondered what happens to them in the interim, while their orders are scattered and their existence forgotten. I'm always fascinated by the generally elided parts of a story - what happens after the evil empire collapses, or while the dystopia is setting in, or the time between the fall and rise of the order of something or other.
Also, you know, I play Dragon Age. Skyhold is... inspiring.
---
There is an ancient fortress that waits in the mountains for the day when its people will return. Dust covers the floors, and many of the ancient statues have fallen.
I do not know what the fortress waits for. Was it an order of scholars? There was a library, with shelves full of scrolls and books. They are ancient and fragile now, so I never enter the room except to light a fire to dry the air, now and then.
It could have been an order of warriors. There are rooms full of ancient weapons. I know what a sword is, though I have never seen swords shaped like this. There are blades on long poles, like some strange mating of an axe and a spear, and other things I cannot name. What is not too rusted, I oil and tend.
Perhaps it was a religious order. There are many statues, and one motif that repeats often, a woman holding a lamp in one hand and a flower or leafy plant in the other. There are statues of her, and paintings on the walls, and even a mosaic of stones in one of the courtyards. I dust the statues and the paintings, and sweep the mosaic. In the room that seems to be a shrine, I keep a light burning on the altar, as the signs tell me others have done before me.
I don’t know what most of what I find signifies. There are chests full of faded and rotted fabric that was clothing once, but I do not know what the sigils mean. There are devices on shelves whose use I cannot begin to guess. There are letters or symbols carved into the stone in several places, but they are not in the language I know.
But there is a garden. Even after years of neglect, the soil is rich. I do not know the language the people here spoke, or why they lived here, but I know the herbs they used. I know the vegetables they ate. I recognised the bones of chickens and goats, when I dug in their midden for fertiliser.  I found the bird cotes, and replaced rotted perches and lured the pigeons which had gone wild back with seeds and insects from the garden.
Some of the perches were large, too large for any pigeon. I don’t know what birds roosted there. But sometimes I see a large bird circling high up, a crow or a raven, and I wonder if it’s a descendant of those birds.
The kitchen has been used more recently than the other rooms. In a small room off the kitchen I found an old straw bed, and clothing that is not too unlike my own. And on the wall of that room, scratched on the stone, I found a series of crude drawings.
A figure in long skirts walking up a slope between trees. A crude representation of the fortress. The same figure, standing in the garden, with crude plants around her feet and what are probably meant to be birds in the air over her head.
These I read easily. “I climbed the mountains and found this place. I lived here.”
The next row was different.  The same figure, repeated several times. Then a crude outline of a skull. Then a door with a symbol on it. It took me a while to figure that out.
Then I found the door with that symbol, deep below the fortress. When I opened it – cautiously, remembering the skull – I smelled the faint memory of decay.
When I went down, I found an ancient crypt. There were niches in the walls, like narrow beds one above the other, and ancient bones within them. Some had the rusted remains of armour, some the dusty shreds of what might have been robes.
And I found other bones. They were not in niches, but laid on the floor at one end of the room. Twelve complete skeletons were there, and I could see, looking at them, that they were not all the same age. One, at the far right, looked almost as ancient as the bones in the niches. The one on the left still had shreds of flesh here and there, and hair spread around its head. When I examined that one, I found that one of the legs was broken, and had not healed.
They are all women, I think. The newest is still wearing skirts, and I can see the decayed remains on some of the others. What hair remains is long, though it is not certain that either man or woman living in this isolation would cut their hair, and some bones are still encircled by bracelets or necklaces.
They were called here, I think, as I was.
There is a long history of hermitage, among my people. It is more common among men than women, but now and then one will be moved to retreat from the world into solitude and contemplation. Usually they are moved by a god, or go to tend some sacred relic or shrine.
I was alone in the world, when I felt the calling. I packed up my belongings, bade farewell to those few who might miss me, and set out to walk into the mountains. I did not know where I was going, but I knew I was going somewhere. And then…
Then I found this place, and I knew. It is empty, but it is not abandoned. It is only waiting. Waiting until its people come back, until some great need calls them, or destiny, or the turning of the wheel. And while it waits, it is… lonely, perhaps. So it calls out, to those who are right, who will be content in this quiet solitude, who will feed the pigeons and tend the garden and light fires in the library and oil the weapons.
The woman before me broke her leg. Perhaps it bled too much, or wound-rot set in. She must have known she was dying and dragged herself down to lie beside the others. When I know my time is coming, I will go too. If I do not have warning, if death comes quickly, I conjure you who come after me to carry my bones down to that crypt, to lie beside my sisters in peace, until the fortress lives once more.
I leave this record in hope that it will help the next hermit who comes, when I am only bones. And if you who read are no hermit, but coming in some dire need or peril, if you come to awaken again what sleeps here, to give the lady with her flower and her lamp a name, or perhaps to earn your own, then welcome, for we have kept this fortress against your coming.
It has been waiting for you.
(This short account, written on parchment, is preserved by the Order as one of its most precious relics. During the Interim, the period of almost eight hundred years in which the Order was largely forgotten and the fortress was left empty, sixteen women are believed to have been ‘called’ to preserve and tend it. Aside from the bodily remains in the crypt, and a few images scratched into a wall, this is the only evidence they chose to leave of their existence. None have ever been identified, and the parchment is unsigned. Nevertheless, the sixteen Guardians are venerated by the Order for their faithful, solitary service to powers whose name they never knew, and their bones are entombed together, side by side in death as was their wish. Without their care, we believe, there would have been little left for the revived Order to return to.)

If you don't mind me asking ( and you really don't have to answer if it makes uncomfortable or would bring up pointless discourse in your blog ) a lot of people call thomas islamphobic , but like when did that even happen ? Like him not being able to add Muslim characters in the show because he isn't allowed to , isn't islamphobic .
Hi! I don't mind, but I don't think I am the best person to talk about this matter. I'll try to explain, but if my followers have more informations, please feel free to join the conversation.
Thomas has explained on Twitter that no, they cannot put religion of any kind in Miraculous. It is one of the 9 kids show taboos, which are summarized in this illustration. Plus, France has secular laws. One of which voted in the early 2000s notably states it is forbidden to wear visible religious signs inside schools and said law affects the students. So you could imagine the reaction of France if a French kids show -- on a tv channel which probably receives some public funding from the French government -- was showing teenagers wearing a religious symbol inside the collège. That's one reality they are dealing with unfortunately.
Some people respond that is it hypocrite because we have seen the Notre-Dame Cathedral in the show and we did got episodes celebrating Christmas or the Saint-Valentin.
Except, in the show, we have never seen any close-ups of the Cathedral aside of a gargoyle when LB is first testing her yoyo during Origins, nor did we got a scene on or inside Notre-Dame. The closer of the Cathedral was in the background was during Sandboy, and notice how many details are missing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No statues of angels nor saint patrons. Notre-Dame is visually there because it is huge monument in the landscape of Paris, but the model is reduced to its basic shape with minimal ornaments (archs, columns, and stained glass). You won't find any cross on it (or anywhere in ML Paris) either.
As for the Christmas special, there were no mention to the nativity either. They keep the celebration to its pagan origins. "Yule logs", "peace and thruce", “decorated trees”, "presents" and "time and dinner with family" along with favoring the commercially red and white representation of Santa Claus over any bible character.
And Valentine's Day, despite being called Saint Valentin in French, is nowadays not consider a holy day in France at all. There is no prayer nor mass for that particular day. School and commercial activities still are open. People just send letters or buy heart shaped products. However, Dark Cupid is of course based on Cupid, the roman deitity of desire and attraction. Mythological deities as inspiration seems to pass. The Old Egyptian gods, Sapotis, Anansi and Oni-Chan along with some of the superheroes like King Monkey are also based on mythic figures. I guess so long no one is using them as holy idol, they fall more under the "folklore" category which appears more acceptable.
Heck, if we see a wedding, it's a civil marriage in the Mayor's office instead of a religious ceremony.
We have Jeanne D'Arc as historical figure who battled to free France and Thomas depicted her as a previous Ladybug Holder, thus removing the religious elements of her "adventures" who get rewritten to fit the Miraculous Lore.
We got Nathaniel whose familly name is a hommage to Jacob Kurtzberg (AKA Jake Kirby) and since Jake Kirby is a jew, they made Nathaniel's heritage be jew by extension. Thus why we don't see Nate in the xmas episode. And Evillustrator's beret subtly ressembles a kippa in its shape. But those are really small details that can easily be missed.
And we do have Prince Ali's Chaperonne who do have her hair wrapped inside some cloth but it appears to be aesthetic more than anything else. Also, both Ali and his chaperonne come from an invented country.
Tumblr media
So we can rise the question : without the religious symbols and beliefs, without the prayers and other religious aspects put behind celebrations, can they still be able to put characters to which people can still identify as Muslim or Hindu for example? After all, someone's culture doesn't revolve around just religion.
Food, language, arts, clothing, gestures, habits and customs.
Those do give some representation. It would be a start but would it be satisfying? Or will something appear to be missing?
That I don't know.
Anyway, context wise, there are way more factors than just creator's decisions to take into account. People really need to stop thinking that everything in the production of a TV show or movie falls on the shoulders of one sole individual. It isn't a self publish novel or comic. It's a product supervised by powerful people from different corporations. As a creator, Thomas can propose and push some ideas, but if there is no support from the higher ups, he is powerless too and must propose something else. Even within his own TV show.

They'd Bring You Back
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x daughter!reader
Summary: You’re an unsub’s latest target, but your personality is way more than he bargained for.
Warnings: Blood/descriptions of stabbing and cutting, typical CM drama, fluffy dad!hotch
-
“And what about me?” You’d asked with a puffy lip, arms crossed, pouting as you sat on your father’s lap. He’d just laughed.
“What about you?”
“If I got kidnapped.” He rolled his eyes.
“You’re so annoying, they would bring you back. And that-” He said as he stood up, taking you with him before setting you on the floor. “Is a promise.”
Things had changed since you had that conversation. Drastically - back then you were only eight and your dad was a prosecutor for the DA. Your mom was alive. Your brother wasn’t even a thought in their minds at that point. And nobody could fathom what would happen when you were a little older.
You went off the rails when your mother died. The trauma was enough that you ended up living with Rossi for a few months while your dad figured out how to juggle Jack and the job and all of your issues. That further fractured your relationship when you felt like he forgot about you. But since you moved back in with him, you had started to feel like things could be normal again. Like things could be good again. You were getting into a routine - Jack would stay with your aunt while your dad was on a case since he went to a school on the other side of town from yours, you would watch Rossi’s house while he was gone since you were old enough to stay by yourself, and you’d go pick up your dad when he got back from a case.
They’d spent a week in Reno and really just wanted to get back to the house after mountains of paperwork. The holidays were coming up and your dad wanted to spend as much time with you as he possibly could, promising to take off some time to go on a day trip with you and Jack. You had made his favorite snack and walked out of Rossi’s front door, locking it and making sure it was locked, before going over to your car.
You held the covered bowl of food in one hand, trying to get the right key in the other hand. You got as far as unlocking the car before you heard a shuffling noise behind you. You turned, seeing nothing alarming, but when you turned back there was an unfamiliar person in front of you.
“Hotch, I think you need to accept that she was taken because...” Rossi started the next morning as they walked into the briefing room. The worst part of it was that they were being briefed on you. The police had determined that you’d been kidnapped, obviously, because there was no way in hell you’d start running away when things had just started to get better between you and your dad.
“How could they have known?” Hotch asked. “How could this unsub have known it was my daughter walking out of your house?” Rossi shrugged, not quite having an answer, and the two sat down.
“I’ve been thinking that the unsub must have been watching for a while. Long enough to know that she stays at Rossi’s when you’re both gone. They have to know who she is, Hotch. It doesn’t make sense for this to just be a random kidnapping,” Morgan said.
“And if anyone can get through it, it’s her,” JJ offered. “She’s a strong-ass kid. She just needs to hold on until we can find her.”
“Uh, guys?” Garcia walked in the room with a remote in hand, switching the large TV in the room over to what looked like a livestream. Of you.
“Holy-” Morgan started. Hotch’s eyes widened in shock, and as if he couldn’t see he walked up to the screen. “It’s a snuff film.”
You were tied up in a chair, a rope around your throat and your body so you were forced to sit up with your spine to the back of the chair. Your mascara was running down your face in silent tears.
“My dad’s going to find me!” You yelled to the unsub, looking around the room. They were watching the same camera that your dad was, but you didn’t know that. You didn’t know that you were the star of your very own snuff film. Suddenly the unsub’s voice came over the loud speaker in the dark, cold room. A cellar - you had to be in a basement or a cellar or something. You came to that conclusion at the same time as your father did, and you also came to the conclusion that he was watching you. This unsub was using you to get to your father, and somehow that pissed you off more than the idea of someone kidnapping you just for kicks.
“He’s using her to get to me,” Hotch determined. “We need to find out how to contact this unsub. Get what he wants. Garcia, do everything you can to track them down. We need to figure out what he wants before he hurts her.”
“My dad’s going to find me!” You yelled again. “I bet he’s already profiled how small your dick is!”
“Okay, sweetheart, now’s not the time,” your dad mumbled as if he was speaking directly to you. He rubbed his pointer finger against a scar on his thumb, one you’d given him shortly after your mom died.
“Although impotent might not actually be that bad of an observation,” Rossi suggested. You struggled against the hard ropes that were holding you down, only getting angrier and angrier at the unsub for not at least facing you.
You finally huffed and looked at the camera in front of you, then around the room. You were definitely in a cellar or a basement of some kind - maybe even an old nuclear bunker or something. The walls were metal, but they looked home-made almost. The white paint was peeling off of said metal walls, revealing a rusty red color that looked like dried blood. Then you were there, in an antique-looking wooden chair. So it was probably an estate of some kind, you thought. Who else would just have this kind of shit sitting around unless they were older, and it had definitely been a younger guy that kidnapped you. You could only hope your dad made the same observation as he watched you on the other side of the camera. Because who else would that camera be for, right?
“You know, your walls give off a lot of information about where I am!” You called throughout the room, looking at the green door. Just then, someone walked in. The same guy who kidnapped you, or at least the same body. But he was wearing a ski mask so you couldn’t identify him.
“Really?” The man asked. He actually seemed curious.
“This chair is antique. So is this room. So you’re keeping me in some kind of family home or estate. I’d guess your grandma’s or your mom’s house because you don’t seem like the type of guy who would ever make it out. And because you’re leaving the mask on, you’re probably not going to kill me. Only people who plan to kill show their faces because they’re scared of being visually identified,” you rattled off. “And we were only in the car for about fifteen minutes, three minutes off of the highway, so there’s no way you took me too far. I take back the impotent thing, at least so far, because you haven’t tried to assault me yet. Anyone who was impotent or had that issue probably would have already.” The man stood there, his arms crossed over a black hoodie. You could vaguely see a shape within the hoodie pocket to know that it was a knife of some kind.
“Good job, kid. Maybe you are your daddy’s kid. I’ve been watching you, you know.” You spit onto the floor out of pure disgust. How long had this creep been watching you? And how?
“Yeah, and if you know who I am then you’re planning to ask for ransom money. Which, you should know, you’ll get. If the FBI won’t pay it, my dad will. But if you’re streaming this to him like I think you are, then you’re planning to do something to me until you get that money.”
“You are smart. I don’t have the letter ready yet, so I figured I’d come have a little fun.” The unsub noticed how calm you were and it kind of scared him a little bit - like who the fuck was calm in this kind of situation? He figured you would be scared, beg your dad to save you, but you were actually holding your own. Huh.
Your dad noticed that, too, and his chest swelled with pride at the same time his stomach ached with fear for you. He kept asking himself why the unsub was sharing it, but he realized. He wanted your father to see what he was doing to you, he wanted your dad to see that everything that happened to you was a reflection of him.
“He’s not a sexual sadist,” your dad said. “The motive isn’t sexual. At all.”
“Good,” Morgan muttered. “But what do you think he wants, then?”
“He wants me to see my actions as a reflection of what happens to her,” he concluded. “He’s going to hurt her. Every time I give him something, it’s going to stop. And then he’s going to start again until I give him what he wants. I’m going to assume it’s money. She’s right about the location, at least from what I can see, so I would assume that money is the main motivation for this.”
“Maybe bail money?” Rossi suggested. “It would make sense. If we put someone away, he would want to see them out. And bail would be a large amount of money.”
“I’ll go tell Garcia to look for people we’ve put away who would be eligible for bail,” Reid said as he stood up. He shuffled away from the table toward Garcia’s office, leaving them to watch the live stream.
“I’ll go make sure SWAT is ready when we have our guy,” Morgan said. “I’ll lead. You don’t need to go in there, Hotch, because for all we know he wants to actually hurt you as well as her.”
“I’ll watch some of the initial footage back. See if we can figure anything about the location,” Prentiss volunteered. Everyone left the table except for your dad, Rossi, and JJ. Your dad had barely even paid attention, too busy looking at the screen as the unsub creeped around you. He had since drawn a knife, twirling it between leather-gloved fingers.
“If you’re going to hurt me, there’s literally no reason to wait,” you pointed out to the unsub.
“You’re annoying. No wonder your dad doesn’t love you.” That hit a nerve in both you and your father, but you didn’t show it. You just sat up a little bit, adjusting your cold, frozen ass on the seat.
“If you’re trying to turn him against me, it’s not going to work. I know he loves me, even in his own twisted way. So stop trying to make it seem like he doesn’t. Psychological torture isn’t going to work on someone who watched their mom die right in front of them.” Your dad’s heart fell thinking about all of the trauma you’d already been through, and how little of it you’d even discussed. After your mom died you just shut down to everyone, including the therapists who tried to help you get through it. You had just pretended like nothing was real and nothing was wrong. This, though? This was fucking real. And you couldn’t block it out no matter how badly you wanted to.
Your father watched as the conversation shifted from just that to actual events that had happened, indicating just how long this guy had been watching. He talked about the fight you had three weeks ago about you accusing your dad of being too overprotective. Then he brought up a fight that was so bad that Jack literally ran down the street to get away from you two. And by then you were crying, begging your dad to just come get you and prove that he loved you. You had been effectively broken by the time the unsub left and he hadn’t even used the knife that he had.
Your father watched absolutely helplessly as the man hurled abusive, and untrue, thoughts at your brain. He watched as the unsub untied you before leaving, allowing you to curl your legs up to your chest and cry on your own. You were doing so well a few minutes ago, so well that you thought maybe your dad might even be proud of you. But now?
“Okay, I have a list of everyone eligible for bail that had anything to do with us. Cases we’ve consulted on, ones we’ve actually worked, all that jazz,” Garcia said over the phone speaker.
“Can you cross reference that with men?” JJ asked.
“Honey, that takes one off the list of fifty,” Garcia answered. JJ sighed.
“What about family issues? Garcia, check any cases that revolved around families. Where they were the target, the motivation, anything,” Rossi said. Everyone could hear Garcia typing, the sound fading out as everyone watched the screen to see what was going to happen next. Reid came back in the room carrying what could only be a ransom note.
“It’s addressed to you, not the BAU,” Reid said as he handed it to your dad. He sighed, taking the letter, and sat down.
Aaron Hotchner:
You can see I have your daughter. You will deliver two installments of fifty thousand dollars. I will be live streaming to your organization as well as a chatroom. Until I receive funds, from this moment on, your daughter will be the star of her very own film. When you can acquire the funds, deliver them to the P.O. Box below. The installments must be in full, or I will not hesitate to kill her. The installments must be delivered over the course of twenty-four hours. For example, you may not deliver one hundred thousand dollars at once. Thank you for your cooperation.
- X
“So he’s trying to get money in two different ways. On the chatroom and from you. This is serving more than one purpose,” Rossi said. He took the note. “Garcia, look and see if any of the bail amounts total one hundred thousand dollars. And look to see if any of them are cash only.”
“Nothing. I’m sorry,” Garcia said after a moment of silence.
“We’ll give them the first fifty thousand,” JJ determined. Everyone in the room turned to look at her as if she was crazy except for your dad. He was visibly shaken, eyes glued to the camera.
“What?” Rossi asked.
“We’ll give them the first fifty thousand as soon as we can get it. We can go ahead and trace the P.O. box, find any connections, and hopefully get our guy before it even gets delivered.”
“And if not?” Your dad asked.
“If not, then we sincerely hope he’s bluffing about hurting her before he gets the second one. Twenty-four hours is a long time.”
Hotch turned back to the screen to see that you were sleeping until the unsub came into the room again. He slammed the door open, carrying a knife in his hand, and walked toward you. You jumped, but didn’t move. You had nowhere to go. You couldn’t leave, so you just sat there with nervous eyes.
“I sent them the ransom note,” the unsub said casually. You swallowed.
“Okay, and? We don’t have that kind of money, and federal funds aren’t going to be...”
“I don’t care about federal funds. Someone better give me my fucking money. Isn’t it taxpayer dollars anyway?”
“You’re a fucking idiot.”
“Oh, I’m so hurt,” the unsub said, “boo hoo. You’ll be the one crying before too long. Sit back in the chair.” You didn’t try to run as he tied you up. You didn’t cry. You didn’t say anything. You just looked at the camera, eyes pleading for someone to fucking do something. If you knew your dad as well as you thought, he’d already made the connections about where you were, hopefully why the guy needed money, and they were already going through the ransom note.
But, no. Your dad was watching as the unsub started by lifting your chin with the silver knife. Then he brushed your hair behind your ears. And then, out of nowhere, he dug the knife into your skin and dragged it down your arm.
“Dad, please,” you said, knowing fully well that he was watching. You didn’t want to seem like you couldn’t handle yourself, but you were getting scared that maybe this guy was actually going to kill you if he didn’t get what he wanted.
“Your daddy’s due to give me some money in a few hours. I figured I’d let you bleed until then.” The unsub was casual as he wiped both sides of the knife on your jeans and then walked out of the room, leaving you tied up.
Garcia tried to had into the livestream and say something, but it didn’t work - there was no way to get a message to you. Your dad just had to sit there and call the bank, telling them that he needed to withdraw everything from his savings. He felt helpless as he watched you cry and bleed.
The P.O. box turned to nothing. The guy had paid in cash and given them a fake name. Garcia’s search came up with four possible matches. Then she looked at property records, and then it was time to give the profile of the unsub. Your dad’s eyes were glued to the screen in the conference room, not even listening to the profile that he would usually be concerned about. He just sat there and watched, hoping that you knew he wouldn’t leave your side even then.
The bank came through and let him withdraw the money, but not before the unsub came back and cut another gash into the same arm. Your dad went to the P.O. box and peeled his eyes away from the screen long enough to deposit the money. They had cops waiting to see who collected it, but nobody did. Nobody even tried to get anything from those boxes.
“You should get some rest,” Rossi said later that night. Your dad shook his head, refusing to leave the screen. “He got his money.”
“And he said he’s going to hurt her still,” your dad insisted. “I’m not leaving her, even if it’s just a screen.” Rossi sighed. The rest of the team agreed not to leave you, either, and they sat there for most of the night, watching as the unsub cut you like a piece of paper.
You had told the unsub numerous times that your dad was coming to get you, and those words haunted the entire BAU as they watched you on the screen. They weren’t coming because they didn’t know where to go. And then the unsub talked you up again, mentioning that he knew you were quiet enough that you wouldn’t scream.
“Garcia, check for neighborhoods. Widen the search again, maybe it’s not bail after all,” Morgan instructed. Garcia started typing again.
“There’s a Joshua Robinson, he lives twenty minutes from Rossi’s house. It looks like his father was one of our unsubs who didn’t make it four years ago. And it looks like he’s over that amount of time in missing mortgage payments. I think this could be our guy,” she said.
“I’ll get SWAT ready again,” Morgan said. He stood up and left the room. Everyone went their separate ways except for your dad, who sat there and watched as the unsub full on stabbed you. Fucking stabbed you - you actually screamed at him instead of starting to cry. You called him impotent. A bitch. You called him slimy. You called him everything in the book and it only aggravated him more.
Morgan drove as fast as he ever had over to the house. They raided it and found nothing - no basement, no nothing. And then they found the reason why the guy was so behind on house payments. They owned the land next to the house, too. It was only a matter of time before they found the bunker and the unsub trying to get away.
Garcia had stopped the stream as soon as she could and called EMT’s to the scene, knowing how hurt you were and how much blood you’d lost. But it was up to your dad to go down to the creepy bunker and get you. He sighed as he descended the stairs and opened the now familiar green door, seeing you, untied but still in the chair. You were so bloody that he barely even recognized you.
“Dad?” You asked as he walked in. He nodded, kneeling in front of you.
“You’re safe, sweetheart, come with me,” he said softly. He threw the ropes off of you and reached underneath you, picking you up and being careful not to hurt you any more than you were already hurt. He took you up to the surface, holding your hand as the EMT’s worked their magic on your arm to try and keep you from bleeding any more than you already were.
They figured out that the unsub had been living at his father’s property, so behind in mortgage payments that he needed almost a hundred thousand dollars to pay for that and for property upkeep so he could sell the place and get a fresh start after attempted murder and kidnapping. You were right about almost every observation you’d made, down to the chair, and when your father looked around the room after loading you into the ambulance he realized just how smart you actually were. And how he hadn’t been paying attention to it.
The next few hours were a blur - they wouldn’t let your dad come with you for anything at the hospital so he just sat there, waiting, with the rest of the team. The unsub had done quite a bit of nerve damage to your arm, leaving you unable to feel any pain in it for what may be forever, but at least you still had your arm. Rossi bought you a guilt gift of a new phone, too, since you’d dropped yours on the concrete, and said he was adding extra extra security to his house if you ever wanted to go there again.
“You were watching the whole time, weren’t you?” You finally said to your dad, shutting your new phone off and putting it in your lap. He was going through some folder before he turned to you, nodding.
“I wouldn’t leave you if I was there. And I’m sorry I didn’t get to you sooner.”
“I’m sorry that anyone thinks I’m worth a hundred thousand dollars.” That made him laugh, if only a little bit. “You always said that they’d bring me back if I was kidnapped.”
“Because you were so annoying!” He laughed. “I think the guy almost did. He was getting pretty fed up with you.” Joking about it, it seemed, was the only way to not cry about it. At least in your family.
“Yeah, I think telling him he had a small dick was a lot for him.”
“I’m really proud of the way you handled that.”
“I had nowhere to go if I tried to run,” you shrugged. “You always taught me that if I’m in a bad situation, stay in it unless I have a way out. You said that’s how you always get through things. Because you don’t just walk out on them.”
“You don’t feel like I walked out on you, do you? And you don’t think that’s why we are the way we are?” You looked down, thinking about it for a minute, before you shook your head.
“No. But-” Your eyes lit up when Rossi walked Jack into the room. He was holding another guilt gift, too, and ran up to you. You picked up your brother and put him in your lap, making him laugh.
“What happened to your arm?” Jack asked, poking at a bandage. You tried not to wince, smiling instead.
“Just a bad guy. But I worked the case,” you told him. He smiled.
“Just like Daddy?”
“Yeah,” your dad said with a smile as he walked over to the two of you. “Just like me.”
A/N: Just some good ole classic Dad!Hotch for y’all... I hope you like it as much as I do!!

"Tell who?"- Part 2
Remus smiled into his pillow. Why’s he so cute? He felt something rustle under his stomach. Reaching under himself, he pulled out a wrinkled piece of parchment. His resolutions list. Remus flipped onto his back and squinted at the letters. Warmth was pooling in his chest. Something is missing here. He patted the bed in search for his quill and ink, then wrote:
5. Fuck this I wanna tell him I love him
The paper slipped to the floor as Remus’ arms gave out and he drifted into an instantaneous, profound sleep.
Alternatively:
The Marauders are in their 6th year at Hogwarts, it's New Year's Eve and Remus writes a New Year's resolutions list. Sirius finds it the next day. The story is written from Remus' point of view. It's wolfstar and lighthearted. Kinda inspired by this fanfic.
This is part 2 of the story. I will be posting the other parts separately here and also the full fic on ao3 (I will link everything when it's done, check this post for that in some time). Warnings: underage drinking and smoking, mentions of anxiety disorder.
Part 1 Part 3
Enjoy! :)
“Moony! Get up, mate!” Like it was that easy. He couldn’t even get himself to pry his eyes open. It was James that woke him. “Come on, mate. We gotta show up at breakfast, so nobody gets suspicious.” Remus groaned and turned onto his back. A dreadful headache split his forehead.
“Ugh, fuck me.”
“Not right now, Moony. We gotta dash.” He could practically feel James’ stupid grin.
“Fine, fine. I’m getting up.” He blinked his eyes open, pushing onto his elbows, then slowly sat up. The throb in his temples was menacing. He got up gingerly. No nausea. Good. Picking out clean clothes from his neatly organised wardrobe, he headed for the bathroom. “Pete and I should probably go as soon as possible. Will you be alright to bring him down to the Great Hall,” he heard James question as he shut the door.
The shower did wonders to Remus’ hangover. It diminished his headache and helped clear his vision. It also felt nice to be in clean clothes, even though it was devastating having to take Sirius’ shirt off. But letting himself feel his emotions was no more, so he pushed down that thought. Remus walked back into the dorm, rubbing his wet hair with a towel. Lifting his gaze, he noticed Sirius leaning against his bedpost with one ankle crossed over the other. His lips were pulled in a small smile. Their eyes connected.
“Tell who?”
Remus’ stare fell on the yellow paper in Sirius’ hand and the realisation hit him momentarily. His heart dropped all the way to the floor. Oh, no. Oh, no no no no no... His mouth was utterly dry. Fear and panic washed over him like a thousand giant ocean waves coming down at once. ‘I wanna tell him I love him,’ he had written. Holy fucking fuck, he thought, Sirius knows I like a boy. There was a deafening, high pitched ringing in his ears.
“M-my dad... I never tell him that.” He was grasping at straws.
“Remus, come on,” Sirius huffed out a short laugh as he pushed himself off the board. He was shooting Remus this terribly meaningful look, and Remus begged the ground to crack open and claim him.
I...“ Then before much further thinking, Remus turned on his heel and darted out the room and down the stairs as Sirius called out his name.
Fucked. He was so fucked. Idiot. Imbecile. How could he have written that and then just left it lying around?! Idiot. He smacked his forehead as he rounded a corner, then scuttled down the hallway. He was headed for his favourite hiding spot- a cosy alcove in the wall behind a tapestry on the fourth floor. Settling on the stone ground, Remus went through his breathing exercises. It wasn’t the first time he’d had an anxiety attack, except it was usually something associated with his lycanthropy. Shit, thank Merlin I didn’t write his name. He exhaled a shaky breath. It could have been worse, at least. He’s never drinking again, he concluded. Well, Sirius knew Remus liked boys. A boy. That was that. He rested his head on the wall behind him and closed his eyes. He stayed like that for a while, just breathing.
“Moony,” a voice called behind the tapestry. It was Sirius. Remus’ heart rate spiked again. “Stop freaking out, mate.”
“I can’t,” Remus replied.
“Can I come in?”
“Okay.”
Sirius pulled back the tapestry and gracefully climbed inside. He was clutching the map. He sat opposite Remus and drew his knees to his chest so they could both fit in the alcove. Remus was looking at the ground.
“Here, I brought you a sandwich. You skipped breakfast. Can’t imagine it helped your hangover.”
Remus took it without looking up. “Thanks.”
After a moment, Sirius started: “This is because it’s a him, right?”
“Well...” Remus cleared his throat. It’s also kinda because it’s you. “Yeah.”
“And what? You think I wouldn’t be okay with that?” Silence. “I don’t care about stuff like that, you idiot.” Sirius’ voice was incredibly soft and comforting. Remus finally looked at him. He shook his head and buried his face in his knees.
“Christ. Of course you don’t. It’s just... It’s a big deal for me. Nobody knows.”
“That’s alright, Moony, I get it. It’s all good with me." He paused. "So, are you... if you don’t mind me asking...” Remus drew his head back up. Sirius was asking if he was gay.
“I have no idea what I am, honestly. This has never happened before. Then again, it hasn’t happened with a girl, either.”
“Well, that’s fine. You have your whole life to figure it out.” Sirius flashed him a sympathetic smile.
“Yeah.” Remus’ lips curved as well.
After a few beats of silence, Sirius continued: “Moony in love... Blimey, this bloke must be something else, eh?” Yup.
“Well, I don’t know about love... I was pretty pissed last night when I wrote that.”
Sirius chuckled, throwing his head back. “Right. So... Does he fancy you back, d’you reckon?”
Remus couldn’t suppress the panicked short laugh that escaped his mouth. “No.” Sirius liking him back? What a joke.
“Well, how do you know? He doesn’t even know you fancy him, it seems.”
“Nope, and I hope it stays that way until the end of time.”
“Merlin, who is this lad anyway?”
“I’m not telling you!” Remus’ cheeks were flaming. There wasn’t a force in the world that could have made him look Sirius in the eye. This was a little too close for comfort.
“Hah, fine. One step at a time.”
They sat in silence for a few moments. Their ankles were touching. Remus pushed down his feelings of affection with all the mental strength he could gather.
“Um, could you not tell Wormtail and Prongs, please? I’m just not ready for people to know.”
“Of course, mate. You know you can talk to me about it, though?” His expression was soft and understanding.
“Yeah, I know.”
“Brilliant. Okay then.” Sirius pushed himself up and dusted off his trousers. “Should we get out of here? This is definitely a secret snogging spot.” He offered a hand to Remus and pulled him to stand as well.
“Please don’t taint the aura of my favourite hideout, Padfoot.”
This is why Remus liked Sirius so much. Of course, he was strikingly good-looking and cool as hell, but Remus liked his personality more. Sirius was a troublemaker and joked around with everyone, but when it came to moments like this, he was an incredible and supportive friend. Never short on advice (even if it was questionable a lot of the time). He never hesitated to go above and beyond for the people he loved. These were also the reasons why Remus reckoned he’d had a crush on his best friend for much longer than 4 months. Sirius’ looks just made it crystal clear, but Remus had been falling for him for years. Maybe love wasn’t such a strong word after all...
On the way back to their dormitory, Sirius asked: “Is it that Ravenclaw guy you study with at the library? What’s his face? Oliver?”
An obvious choice, but wrong. “Shut up,” Remus said, looking straight ahead, but the corners of his mouth lifted.
“Okay.” Sirius put his hands up, smiling. “Not Oliver, then.”
Sirius kept prodding him like that every once in a while for the following two weeks. Sometimes he would point at a random bloke in the hall and ask if that was Remus’ mystery crush. It made Remus laugh. Generally, it didn’t bother him at all and even became rather amusing. It grew into a sort of an inside joke between them.
They were sitting side by side at dinner one evening after all the students had returned from the holidays. Sirius was in his curious, mischievous mood.
“Oh! The- the muggle kid we hung out with last Christmas? When we were at James’,” he tried.
“Hah, no,” Remus answered, “I saw him like twice.” Sirius huffed.
“Is it somebody from home, then? Somebody I don’t know?”
Remus could’ve lied. He could’ve lied so easily. Still, he decided against it, given how dreadful he was at keeping life-changing secrets. He shook his head, looking at his plate. Sirius leaned so close to him, their shoulders touched. He all but started bouncing in his seat.
“So it is someone from Hogwarts!” Remus didn’t bring himself to answer. Instead, he shoved a particularly packed fork into his mouth. They were silent for a few moments, then: “Is it Snivellus?”
“Yuck, Sirius!” Remus shoved his shoulder as they both laughed.
“So, why don’t you just tell this bloke of yours, then?”
“Ha. Because he’s straight.”
“Oh, bummer. Sorry, Moony.”
Remus wanted to bang his head on the table. If only Sirius knew he was apologising for himself being straight. “It is how it is.”
Back in their dorm, a parcel was sitting on Sirius’ bed. “Padfoot, something arrived for you earlier. I paid the owl,” James explained.
“Oh, yes! They arrived! Cheers, mate.” Sirius leapt onto his bed and started tearing the paper. “What is it,” James asked, leaning closer to Sirius’ bed and peering at the package. Remus and Peter were doing the same. “My rings,” he exclaimed, sliding a silver loop onto his finger. He placed one on his ring finger, one on his thumb and two on his index finger, then stretched out his arm to examine his hand. They were all different shapes.
“Wicked,” James blurted out.
“Yeah, wicked,” Peter repeated. Remus could just sit and gawk like his mouth was sewn shut. What the fuck, Remus thought. He’s trying to kill me. It was hot. It was hot. Like his hands could get any sexier.
“Don’t worry, Moony, it’s not real silver,” Sirius said with the biggest grin on his face. Remus could just nod, swallowing thickly. Yeah, that was a good excuse for why he was baffled.
Sirius wore his rings everywhere. To class, to every meal, sneaking around the castle at night to arrange their next prank. And Remus loved it. After the initial bewilderment subsided, he adored looking at them. However, it didn’t help reduce his massive fucking crush on Sirius. Quite the opposite, as a matter of fact. Girls would come up to Sirius at lunch to tell him ‘his rings look amazing’, and Remus would almost start growling. It was a bit of a problem. He needed to repeatedly tell his brain to shut up in these moments.
***
Sirius was running out of ideas for who Remus' infamous crush could be. Remus was a bit concerned he would actually figure it out. However, Sirius just started bringing it up less and less. It seemed like the entire thing was blowing over and Remus was getting away with it.
They were sitting on James’ bed, leaned over the map. There was nobody else in the dorm. Their bodies were close together, Remus’ right shoulder behind Sirius’ left.
“Good old Prongsy,” Sirius said. James’ dot on the map was in the hallway outside the Great Hall. Lilly’s dot was right next to it. “He’s probably making an idiot of himself again. Poor lad’s gonna get himself hexed.” Remus laughed.
“I admire him,” Remus said, “I would have died from embarrassment by now.”
“Oh, have you seen it?!” Sirius suddenly turned to look at him, their noses almost brushed. Remus’ heart skipped a beat.
“Seen what?”
“The abomination James made for Evans for Valentine’s day!”
“For Valentine’s? But it’s January,” Remus said as Sirius opened the drawer of James’ bedside table and reached inside. He pulled out a wooden cube that fit in the palm of his hand.
“It opens on my voice for now. Later he’ll change it to activate when Evans says ‘James’.” In that moment the top of the box popped open and the sides fell to reveal a petit yellow bird figurine. Just as Remus thought: Oh, this is cute, a blearing sound spread through the room. “Evans,” the bird boomed in James’ voice, “go on a date with me this Hogsmeade weekend!” Remus grimaced at the volume of the noise.
“My idea to make it loud,” Sirius said with a proud grin.
“Oh, why did you help him with it?!” Remus started laughing.
“He’s gonna transfigure it into a real bird and make it sit oh her shoulder giving her compliments the whole day. I haven’t decided whether I’m gonna let him go through with it. Reckon it might be worth it to see the look on Evans’ face.”
“This is bad.” Remus couldn’t stop sniggering. “This is so bad.”
“The lad has no shame. Maybe you could make one for your mystery man. I bet it would change his views,” Sirius joked. He was being incredibly charming. Remus couldn’t help it. When you’re not supposed to look at something, it’s all your eyes want to do. He dropped his gaze to Sirius’ flawless lips. It wasn’t discreet at all. Remus realised he was leaning towards him, smiling stupidly. Sirius’ eyes flickered between Remus’ as realisation flashed across his expression. He drew back a little. “Oh,” was all he said. Remus’ smile dropped suddenly as he pulled back as well.
“Me?”
Remus’ heart was thumping in his ears. It kind of felt like his soul was leaving his body. No, actually, he was sure his soul was leaving his body. Suddenly, he scrambled off the bed frantically, saying: “Fuck, sorry,” then crossed the room in three large, quick steps and bolted out the door. “Moony,” he heard the dim and distant shout. Deja vu. Only this time he’d had enough sense to grab the map.

Chapter 39: Star Death Reality Show (XXII)
This sound was like a signal to escape. Janet, Alex, Jing Siyu and Jing Sixue ran away in fear, wishing to escape to the ends of the earth.
"Take Lara away, get back! I’ll lead it away, I can deal with it!" Qi Leren kicked Du Yue and told him to act quickly. He shot at the monster's head to attract its attention, and prepared to take it somewhere far away and solve it with his own hands.
The monster came out. The swollen amphioctopus broke from its host body, and Francis's body was like a deflated balloon hanging off the amphioctopus, but this space alien had revealed its true appearance—an odd tentacled creature shaped like an octopus, which was covered in Francis's blood, and had changed from a mass of parasitic "seeds" in the body to a dangerous predator full of viscous body fluids.
Its speed was extremely fast. After breaking free from the shackles of the human body, it rushed toward Qi Leren at an amazing speed!
Qi Leren stopped shooting, picked the flashlight up off the ground, sped up his strides with all his strength, and rushed through the corridor deep in the institute at an inhuman speed!
The boundary between prey and hunter was difficult to distinguish. Both sides were sure that they were the hunter, but it wasn’t known who would die.
The S/L Data’s thirty seconds had passed. At this time, Qi Leren, who didn't have an immortal body, could only rely on his own abilities to handle this difficult opponent. At a gallop, Qi Leren realized that the distance between the octopus and him was getting farther and farther, and he was running fast enough to get rid of this fast-moving monster after having broken the shell.
He looked back, glancing out of the corner of his eye. This monster, which looked like an octopus, came after him as quickly as if it was sliding on the ground. Fortunately, it still didn't run as fast as he did. Seeing that there was a T-shaped intersection ahead, he immediately cheered up and prepared for the final battle.
Three, two, one, do it!
Qi Leren bit the ring off his hand grenade and threw it behind him. He pushed his running body harder, jumping around a 90-degree corner, and hugged his head on the ground.
Boom—
A huge explosion sounded around the corner, and the flames from the explosion lit up the whole passageway. Even Qi Leren, who was lying on the ground, felt the immense heat and shaking, and countless debris blew out and sprayed straight into the corridor ahead. Hiding in the vertical position of the T-shaped corridor, Qi Leren survived the explosion unharmed.
It was over.
Qi Leren stood up and was about to lift his foot to go out when Chen Baiqi's warning came to mind again. He breathed a sigh of relief, kept on alert, and carefully stepped around the corner with his gun drawn.
The explosion had made this area ahead unrecognizable. The body of the octopus had been blown apart, and several tentacles were thrown on the metal wall, sliding down slowly together with mucus, dragging out a scarlet liquid trail. With the loss of its tentacles, the octopus would only move helplessly a few times before falling to the ground completely dead.
All the four mature amphioctopuses had been dealt with, which meant that requirements could be almost declared for this task. Even if there were still a few newly spawned parasitic amphioctopuses in the contestants, they could be easily distinguished by detecting them with the instruments. But to kill people... Qi Leren imagined the scene with a heavy heart.
Once parasitized, it was hopeless. All he could do was let the parasitized people die happily.
Qi Leren pursed his lips and felt a little dry cough. His throat choked by the smoke was also a little painful, but it was still within tolerance.
He should find Du Yue and meet with him first. Qi Leren thought about it and walked along the way back.
At the moment he walked around the corner, the flashlight in Qi Leren’s hands suddenly swept onto a reflective object. When he looked intently, it was a half-open iron door, just at the end of the corridor where he had escaped the explosion just now. That is, at the bottom of this T-shaped intersection, there was no other fork in the road at its end, only a lonely door.
There was no sign on the door, no words, no letters, no special symbols. It was just a heavy iron door, half-hidden, and it was dark inside.
Qi Leren's heartbeat suddenly slowed, and his intuition whispered vaguely in his ear, encouraging him to move forward.
He pushed open the door, and the flashlight lit up the dark space. This small room was an office with desks, bookshelves, and office chairs.
There was also a computer: the same laptop that Qi Leren had been worried about, afraid of, and looking forward to.
His heart jumped wildly. Qi Leren took a deep breath, slammed the door, rushed to the computer in three steps and two steps, took out the prepared mobile power source from the item bar and connected it, and pressed the power-on button with trembling hands.
When the familiar boot screen appeared, Qi Leren clenched his hand and couldn't help tapping on the desk. Hurry up, open it quickly, and let him try again. Could he play Nightmare Game again? He had too many doubts that he needed this game to answer.
After the boot was finished, the mouse cursor moved to the icon of Nightmare Game and double-clicked.
The game interface appeared, and Qi Leren's heart was about to jump out of his throat. He held his breath and moved the cursor to "Save and Load".
Countless save files jumped out, arranged in reverse chronological order, and the last one was in the chapel in the Village of Dusk. At that time, he had gone through rows of old pews and was faced with a choice in the depths of the church: to the left or to the right.
He had saved the file, then walked through the door to the right, received the Holy City task, and had his first death there. In the real Nightmare World, he had chosen to go left, and then he met Ning Zhou in the graveyard outside the door, who had come to sweep Maria’s grave.
What if this time, he chose to turn left in the game? Would he meet Ning Zhou?
This problem had once bothered Qi Leren, but now he could prove it.
[…Reading save file, LOADING……]
[File read completed. Player "Passerby A", welcome back to the Nightmare Game.]
In the game, Qi Leren’s character named "Passerby A" went to the left door under his command. Qi Leren hardly dared to breathe, and countless chaotic thoughts berated him. For the first time, he was strongly aware of the fear that overthinking could bring.
The wooden door opened, and the game entered a cutscene animation. He could no longer manipulate his character, but watched him walk forward.
Outside the door was a gravel path occupied by shrubs and weeds. He went straight ahead. All the greenery in this sunset did not give a feeling of peacefulness, but instead filled his with anxiety and unease.
Qi Leren didn't know whether he wanted to see Ning Zhou in the game or not. His yearning heart was looking forward to meeting him again, even if it was separated by a cold screen. But reason made him resist. He didn't want to see Ning Zhou as an NPC in this game, because he didn't dare to ponder the hidden meaning behind it.
No matter whether he wanted it or not, in the dim afterglow of the sunset, Qi Leren still saw a figure standing in front of the tombstone.
So familiar, because he was so deeply imprinted in his mind, but so strange, because they were separated by the layer of a cold screen.
The figure appeared on the screen murmuring and, just like every NPC, the lines were displayed on the screen:
[Mom, I’ve fallen in love with someone I shouldn't love. He’s made me confused...]
Qi Leren's eyes had just seen this sentence when the words were blurred instantly.
It turned out that on that day, before he had walked from this church and seen Ning Zhou, Ning Zhou had once said such a thing in front of Maria's tombstone.
This was a lost Ning Zhou. At that time, he had not yet firmly believed that he would be willing to exile himself for his love. He was hesitating, unsure and uneasy, but he had no one to talk to. He could only come to his mother's grave and tell her quietly, even if he couldn't get an answer.
Qi Leren covered his face in front of the computer, tears flowing down his fingers and wetting the keyboard. He never knew he was such a fragile person; even if it was just a few words he had never heard before, they made him burst into tears.
He wanted to rush into the screen, embrace that lonely back, and comfort the lonely wandering soul.
But his approach would only wake up the lost man.
"Who’s there?" Ning Zhou appeared again on the screen.
Qi Leren woke up from grief. Ning Zhou had discovered his existence!
He couldn't make any answer. It was just a game with pre-written dialogue. When the game didn't give him options, he couldn't say anything.
They looked at each other without saying a word. They were as unfamiliar as two strangers.
They were indeed strangers.
Footsteps came from behind, and the Qi Leren in the game turned his head. Along this path full of weeds and shrubs, he saw a man walking towards them, bathed in the sunset from where he had come.
His words were also subtitled on the screen: "Passerby A? Ning— Ning Zhou? Why are you here?"
At this moment, Qi Leren was shaking and unable to breathe.
A familiar person stood there, looking surprised and shyly at Ning Zhou behind him.
That was himself.

I'm genuinely curious and don't want to start something! Just wanted to ask what you make of the 'Old Fritz might've been asexual' take, I don't know much about him and I feel you're one of the best people to ask esp since you lean towards 'he was probably queer in some way' too
Hey there! So, first off, don’t ever worry about me interpreting you asking me a question as starting something. As much as I love making dumb jokes about the guy, I love nothing more than doing this kind of stuff and defending or explaining my points. There’s two degrees I want to get over the next decade: first my JD and then my MA in Prussian history. I live for this stuff! Always have! Second off, I’m very sorry for not getting to this sooner. Things have been incredibly stressful for me for a variety of different reasons which have made answering your question, until now, rather difficult. Putting this under a cut because, holy shit, it got long!
My personal reasoning for why I think he’s bi (which, correct me if I’m wrong, I’m assuming is what you meant instead of ace and could be a different post entirely since some historians have tried to argue that) stems more to do with some of my lingering questions about the nature of his relationships with certain woman, rather than that of his relationships with men. To me and my modern, queer eye, Fritz’s relationships with men like Hans Hermann von Katte, Francisco Algarotti, Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf, and (much to my personal vexation) one Monsieur Voltaire are either outright homosexual/homoerotic in nature or very, very easily lend themselves to that interpretation rather than strictly romantic friendships (which Wikipedia does a fairly good overview of and, if you’re coming to me from AmRev perspective, uses Hamilton and Laurens’ relationship as a familiar example). While I’m avoiding those relationships in this ask, I’d be more than happy to elaborate upon one/all of them in a different one.
Before I go into the big pauses that Fritz’s relationships with Madame von Wreech and Countess Orzelska give me, I want to deny the use of Fritz’s wife as an example of Fritz’s attraction to woman. While this, admittedly, may sound odd, we have ample evidence of how turned off and repulsed Fritz found Elisabeth Christine. Before he had even met her, Fritz was complaining about how she was ‘not very pretty, speaks but little, and acts like a blockhead’ (Asprey, 87) and, later, admitted to Grumbkow his plan to ‘keep my word,...get married, but afterwards it will be a case of that is that, and goodbye, Madame, and fare thee well’ (Jones, 52). For Christ’s sake, the man pitied her knowing how his treatment would leave her as ‘one more unhappy princess in the world’! Which is little consolation when you remember he also referred to her with such romantic terms as ‘this unpleasant creature,’ ‘the abominable object of my desires,’ ‘the person,’ and claimed to have preferred to marry ‘the biggest whore in Berlin’ (Asprey, 87). And while we (fortunately? unfortunately?) know quite a bit about their sex life, Fritz largely regarded it as just another duty - to quote him, ‘I will only have the duty to fuck’ (Ibid, 87). And while Seckendorf heard - first, presumably from Count von der Schulenburg and, later on, Count Friedrich von Wartensleben, a close and intimate friend of the then-crown prince - that Fritz would ‘fuck and refuck’ Elisabeth Christine and that said act occurred in the afternoon, it still was out of a sense of obligation (Bely, 481-2). When reminded that if he wanted more money for frivolities, he’d need to produce an heir, Fritz bemoaned that he ‘cannot sleep with my wife out of desire, and when I do sleep with her, I do it out of duty rather than inclination’ (Clark, 50). All this in accumulation, as well as the myriad of other quotes and incidents I’ve left out, makes one wonder why his relationship with Elisabeth Christine is sometimes used by historians to prove any sort of heterosexual impulse in the man when she’s the woman with the weakest supports for that argument.
That being said, now we get to the women with a more muddled places in his romantic escapades, if you will. What exactly happened between Orzelska and Fritz during his trip with his father to Dresden in 1728? The main source for everything that occurred during this trip is Wilhelmina, who didn’t attend and without anything about this specific incident coming from Fritz or Friedrich Wilhelm I, make it rather hard to use as concrete, irrefutable proof. Now, if her recollections were contemporaneous - like coming from a diary or journal she kept at the time - that would be one thing. But it comes from her memoirs which, while a delightful read 10/10 recommend, are written decades after this trip took place and, memory being a finicky thing, can’t be taken to the bank. All those disclaimers, here’s the story as told by her:
‘One evening...,the King of Poland [note: Augustus II] insensibly led the King of Prussia to a very richly decorated room...The King of Prussia, delighted with what he saw, stopped to contemplate all its beauties, when [all of] a sudden a tapestry was rolled up, which procured him a very novel sight. It was a lovely female in a state of nudity [note: Countess Orzelska, the Polish king’s daughter], carelessly reclined on a couch. Her beauty excelled that of the finest pictures of Venus and the Graces; her body seemed of ivory, whiter than snow, and better shaped than that of the Venus de Medicis at Florence.
...Scarcely had the King cast his eyes on the fair one, than he turned about with indignation; and seeing my brother behind him, he rudely pushed him out of the room, and left it immediately after in a violent irritation against the trickery they had attempted to practice on him. ...In spite of the King’s vigilance, [Frederick] had had time to contemplate the Venus of the closet, who did not cause him so much horror as she had done to his father. (Wilhelmina’s Memoirs, vol. 1, 107-6)
Wilhelmina then goes on to claim Fritz had fallen ‘passionately in love’ with Orzelska and that the illness Fritz experienced upon returning home was simply being lovesick. Pinning the accuracy of this story is incredibly difficult because, again, we have only one source relayed decades after the fact and from two volumes of memoirs known to have inaccuracies. While I, personally, would love if he had had a tryst with Orzelska (who is such a badass in her own right and deserves more recognition than as a footnote in this guy’s story), there’s no one way to say with more than 30% confidence. I am inclined to believe something along these lines happened because if someone told me a story like this, lord knows I wouldn’t forget it for the rest of my life. And, with Wilhelmina being so close with her brother, it lends a bit more credence but as to the actual emotional or physical response Fritz had to it, well, without my time machine, I can’t and don’t want to say.
With Madame Eleonore-Louise von Wreech, things are a little more concrete. For starters, Fritz actually talked about her! In written correspondence that survived! We even have seven letters between the two of them that survived, which is a bigger win! As Blanning says, they’re ‘ardent but light in tone, ironic, almost flippant, and highly stylized’ (Blanning, 58). Their relationship was known to those close with Fritz at the time that Schulenberg felt compelled to visit and warn the crown prince against devoting himself to women because ‘the slight pleasures gained cause a million displeasures.’  Fritz’s response? To tell the poor guy that he may have ‘the gift of continence, but I assure you that I do not’ (Asprey, 83-4). Firtz even went so far as to send a letter to her mother, waxing poetic about Louise’s ‘beauty, her majestic air, her bearing, and her entire department.’ It’s worth noting that Louise eventually broke off the affair due to being bored by how he ‘loved [her] too much and often annoyed [her] with his clumsy love’ (Ibid, 84). Contemporaries, including Friedrich Wilhelm, believed Fritz had impregnated her with a daughter who her ‘cuckolded husband would refuse to recognize’ (Blanning, 58). Blanning is the only source I’ve seen dispute this due to this news coming from Seckendorf, who didn’t reveal how he came about this information; that Fritz and Madame von Wreech’s correspondence doesn’t indicate a physical relationship; and on the fact that she was not pregnant. I haven’t been able to find the birth dates or any sort of records for Louise’s two daughters to figure out where their conception could’ve been in the timeline and if it matches with the likely dates for the affair, but I also don’t have the resources Cambridge would afford Blanning. Either way, while the physical nature of the affair is in dispute, the emotional aspect certainly was there. Especially when taking into consideration the fact that she’s the woman Fritz was likely referring to in the 16 August 1737 letter to Voltaire where he claimed she had taught him how to love (and also inspired him to write poetry, which we shouldn’t be thankful for). Specifically, all these years later, he stated how ‘this little miracle of nature possessed every possible charm, together with good taste and delicacy. She sought to transfer these qualities to me. I succeeded well in love but poorly in poetry. Since that time I have very often been in love and have always been a poet’ (Fritz’s Oeuvres, vol. 21, 96).
All this to say, there’s a bit too much evidence of some degree of opposite-gender attraction in Fritz to completely write off the possibility that he could’ve been bisexual. While it’s undeniable he held a preference for men and that’s whose company he typically enjoyed, I still do find it interesting the two exceptions (one potential and the other with a fair degree of certainty) to this. And, while I would never want his attraction to men be minimized in favor of that to women, it still remains important to note to get the most comprehensive picture of the man.

ANOTHER EDITION OF INCORRECT QUOTES
ft: @catchmewiddershins @paradise-creator @elektrosonix @lilikags @todd-the-phrog and my irl bestie
Lili: I think I'm falling for you.
Anna: Then get up.
Anna: I dare you to kiss the next person who walks into this room.
Pauline: Screw that, I’m not kissing any of you.
*Wid walks in*
Pauline: Fine, I’ll do it. Rules are rules you know.
Sara: Are you an F5 key? Because that ass is refreashing.
Wid: Are you a software update? because not right now.
Isamu: Is something burning?
Wid, leaning seductively on the counter: Just my desire for you.
Isamu: Wid, the toaster is literally on fire.
Isamu: *seductively takes off glasses*
Isamu: Wow...
Anna: *blushes* Haha... what?
Isamu: You're really fucking blurry.
Anna: Any questions?
Wid: Uh, yeah, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?
Anna: Uh, a plan, duh...
Shiyu: Wid, chill, I know it’s weird, but Anna has a point.
Wid:
Wid: THAT WAS LITERALLY A PONY DOODLE WITH A HAT!!
Wid: I know this isn’t going to end well and I don’t care. So don’t you try and stop me, Sara!
Sara: I wasn’t stopping you. I was asking if you had a spare camera so I can record this.
Lili: I'm not that stupid!
Shiyu: Lili, you literally ate the wax from a babybel.
Lili: ANNA TOLD ME IT WAS EDIBLE!
Isamu: *visiting the squad* Hello, I just came to-
Isamu: *sees Sara shoving Shiyu into the washing machine while Anna records and Wid watches*
Isamu: *retreating* Something suddenly came up.
Shiyu: I failed my safety training course today.
Lili: Why, what happened?
Shiyu: Well one of the questions was "In case of a fire, what steps would you take?"
Lili: And?
Shiyu: Well apparently "FUCKING LARGE ONES" isn't an acceptable answer.
Lili: How would you like your coffee?
Wid: As dark and as bitter as my soul.
Lili, shouting to someone behind the counter: I need one vanilla latte with extra cream and sugar!
Wid: It’s time to turn this into a real business.
Shiyu: What do you mean? Like, carry a briefcase, and wear a tie, and pay taxes?
Anna: Wait, have you not been paying your taxes?
Sara: I handle our accounting.
(no but this is actually me)
Sara: Honestly, I am so evil. So full of darkness. I feed of the souls of the living I strike fear into-
Anna: You sleep with a teddybear.
Sara: He’s my sECOND IN COMMAND IN MY ARMY OF DARKNESS!
Lili: You are an absolute fucking dork.
Anna, singing: Yeah, but I'm your dork!
Lili: *sighs* Yeah, you're my dork.
Lili: Guys, I didn’t memorize my lines!
Isamu: Just use your lack of common sense! Everyone knows the characters in plays are dumb as fuck!
*During the play*
Pauline: Hey! You finally made it! Did you get the donuts?
Lili: W-what’re donuts?
Pauline: I am darkness. I am an power. I am your worst nightmare. I could kill a man in more ways than you can imagine. I am the night. I am fury, I am a weapon, I am-
Anna: A doll.
Isamu: A cinnamon roll.
Lili: A sweetheart.
Pauline:
Pauline: ...stop it.
Pauline: I think I just figured something out. I got to go.
Wid: Aren't you forgetting something?
Pauline: Uuh...*hesitantly kisses Wid's forehead before running out.*
Wid: No, pay your bill! Damn, who raised you?
Pauline: Why should I make my bed, when I'm just gunna unmake it to sleep in it anyways?
Anna: Why should I feed you if your just gunna die anyways?
Pauline:
Pauline: I'll go make my bed-
Lili: Yo dumbass, get over here.
Shiyu: Okay-
Anna: *gleefully runs past* I’m coming!
Shiyu, sadly: I thought... I was dumbass...
Shiyu: That shirt looks great, Sara.
Sara: Thanks.
Shiyu: But I bet it would look even better on Lili's floor.
Lili: Are you hitting on Sara... for me?
Pauline: I dare you-
Lili: Isamu is not allowed to accept dares anymore.
Pauline: Why not?
Isamu: "I have no regard for my own or others personal safety", as some would say.
Pauline: Dearly Beloved, we are here today to remember Isamu, taken from us in the prime of life; when they were crushed by a runaway semi, driven by the Incredible Hulk.
Isamu: Aww, you knew my favorite cause of death.
Lili: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Wid, whispering: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Sara, whispering: Because I have little hands.
Wid: Because they have little hands.
Anna: I’ve made a spread sheet of all the crime in Brooklyn.
Anna: There’s so much crime in New York, no one should live here.
Lili: Pros and cons of dating me.
Lili: Pros. You'll be the cute one.
Lili: Cons. Holy shit, where do I begin-
Shiyu: Sometimes I drink milk straight from the container.
Pauline: The cow??
Shiyu: What?
Isamu: Pauline, W H Y?
Lili: We just ate. Why are you making pancakes?
Sara: For the dogs.
Wid: Why are your tongues purple?
Isamu, texting in the group chat: I wonder what Apple shots would look like?
Shiyu: That’s the longest worm I’ve ever seen.
Isamu: Is this your plan B?
Lili: What do you call quantums of electromagnetic radiation that don’t get along?
Sara: Hey, no, you stay out of this, this is between me and Isamu!
Anna: Truth or dare?
Isamu: How many children do you have?
Isamu, tearing up the room: Where are they?
Sara, very tired: Can I sleep in your bed?
Isamu: I failed my safety training course today.
Pauline, watching Isamu and Sara fight: Are you sure they should be fighting? What if they get hurt?
(ok but this is kinda accurate)
Isamu: Do you want some tea?
Pauline: I have an idea.
Wid: When I was a kid, Isamu told me that the paper strip that’s in the chocolate kisses were edible and I ate them with the chocolate for a year.
Pauline: What the fuck? People actually tell their crushes they like them??
Shiyu: What's wrong with you?
Wid: I intend to stay pissed at you forever.
Anna, hungover: Please tell me I'm imagining that I claimed I was king of the ducks.
Anna, holding a rock: Isamu just gave this to me and said "I feel like you deserve the moon but all I can give you is a rock".
Anna: What do you have?
Pauline: Well, well, well, if it isn’t the consequences of my actions.
Lili: Alright, listen up you little shits.
Anna: I wasn't hurt that badly. The doctor said all my bleeding was internal, that's where the blood's supposed to be!
Pauline: So are you gonna explain how the hell you crashed my car?
Sara: How stupid do you think I am?!
Pauline: Honestly, I am so evil. So full of darkness. I feed of the souls of the living I strike fear into-
Lili: I'm going the fight the next person who insults Pauline.
Lili: I currently have 7 empty notebooks and I have no idea what to put in them. Any suggestions?
Anna: I wanna die.
Shiyu: Are you sure this is safe?
Wid: My life is a little too much panic and not enough disco.
Isamu: The time to act is now.
Isamu: Shiyu won’t wake up, what do I do?
Isamu: Why doesn’t Pauline find me sexy when I bite my lip?
Wid: Anna's first detention, I'm so proud.
Pauline: She's the girl of my dreams!
(and now, an only ship edition)
Pauline: So, are you two dating now?
Anna: I didn't drink that much last night.
Anna: Did you know you remind me of all 26 letters of the alphabet?
Shiyu: Just a minute. I need to go take out the trash.
Isamu: *sees Anna and Pauline together*
Pauline: Two years ago, I married my best friend.
Anna: Well, remember when Lili made a romantic dinner for me?
Isamu: Sara, let’s go!
Anna: Let’s watch Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
Wid: Is this your plan B?
Shiyu: I would never say that my partner is a bitch and I don’t don’t like them. That’s not true… My partner is a bitch and I like them so much!
Lili: I find it very unseemly of Shiyu to start dating again. Isn't the customary period of mourning 10 years?
Shiyu: Hey, Pauline? Can I get some dating advice?
Shiyu: I still have no idea how I’m attracted to you...
Isamu: Someone take me to art museums and make out with me.
Anna: Guys, my friend here is bilingual.
Sara: Valentine’s day is just a consumerist holiday that holds no real value other than drive people insane buying heart shaped chocolates for their significant others and pos-
Anna: So... who's the big spoon and who's the little spoon?
Shiyu: Isamu kissed me!
Sara: Ooh, somebody has a crush
Lili: *sees Anna and Shiyu together*
*playing twister*
Wid: So, what is Shiyu to you?
Shiyu: Why are your tongues purple?

Maccius arrives as it always does: with very little flair. Spring has fully settled now, and across Val Faim, trees blossom with pink and white flowers, nearly every merchant sets out grand bouquets in front of their displays to draw possible patrons in, and sailors return home from long excursions at sea to the arms of their loved ones—it is at this time of year that the Celestinian ocean is most peaceful. When Summer arrives, it will be so soft and lulling that the only way to move product to trade is by means of magic, and when winter comes, the waves will tower so tall any man who thinks to sail them will be dubbed out of his mind.
TRIGGER WARNING: Death, explosions, implied violence
Now, however, peace reigns. People settle back into their usual daily routines, and while the death of Hippolyte had been tragic, most are content to forget the event entirely. His blood was cleaned from the marble of the Summer Palace that same night—why should they carry his bones with them? It doesn’t take so much as a week before Hippolyte’s duty is replaced by someone else, who will tend the docks and its workers and ensure Val Faim gets what it needs. GHISLAIN in particular has taken much interest in this replacement, hoping to wring out of this execution whatever dor it will provide. A job on the top of the Azure Quarter, overseeing not only trade but also every writ of passage through the capital, is an incommensurate advantage. Maybe it’s crude to make a move so soon after a man’s demise, but Calandre’s word is holy: he was a traitor, and he got his due. Besides, the hunger for power consumes all else. Ghislain’s efforts come to the dismay of RÉGIS, who’d been hoping to wrangle a similar deal for themself, and become the new helmsman of the docks on behalf of Alain Gauthier.
Not all are content to return to the way things were—in fact, some find the idea abhorrent, and Alain has taken to tracking down those who speak with dissent about Calandre to a new level entirely. He has enlisted GISELE to pick out newfound dissidents, with a particular emphasis on ETIENNE. “Having someone as skilled as Etienne”, Alain explains, “certainly wouldn’t harm us, especially if they were already in our pocket.” As soon as Gisele is sent away with their goal, he calls for BEAU and explains in no uncertain words what he needs them to do, with a little bump in their pay to incentivize it.
Talk in the Underworld says that Hippolyte had some sort of allegiance to Widrowem, and that his plan was not to kill Calandre, but to warn her about Alain in order to earn Widrowem a foothold in Celestine’s court. Gauthier doesn't know how far back this scheme goes, or whether it has something to do with Widrowem’s insistence for Calandre to receive their ambassadors and listen to their offer.
Alain, as is ingrained in his nature, fears the worst. The Widrowish envoy has long whispered of the need to unite their two kingdoms in marriage, and Calandre sharply rebuked each of these attempts. It could very well be that Widrowem tired of waiting, and found another way to ingratiate themselves upon the throne. If BEAU could dig through Hippolyte’s abandoned townhouse in Hightown, there’s a chance they might find something of worth linking him back to the foreign southern kingdom. “Anything works,” Alain says, pressing a small purse of dor into Beau’s hands. “Journals, letters, ledgers, books—whatever you can find, take it. And one more thing: find PATRICE, ask for their help. They might be a noble scorned, but they’re noble regardless, and if you need to take your time looking, having someone from a high-standing house with you might save your neck. Tell them I sent you.” Whether BEAU needs to split their new wealth with PATRICE goes unsaid, because Alain is gone before anyone can think to ask him.
Across the city, LIANE listens intently as Calandre explains her next task for her esteemed spymaster, with CELESTE close behind: she, too, wants them to go rooting around in Hippolyte’s grand old house. Not to find any links to Widrowem, but to find what they can on Alain Gauthier, who the Empress thinks was pulling the strings behind Hippolyte’s poorly coordinated assassination attempt and untimely demise. She might have given the signal for the axe, but it was Gauthier who hung it overhead.
Standing on the balcony overlooking the gardens, with the air cool, the weather fair, and Calandre’s tone mild, it is difficult to recall that a month ago she had stood here and watched one of her detractor’s bodies burn on the Pyre.
It is the virtue of the Summer Palace’s unique positioning that gives all three of them a perfect view when a flash of light and fury shakes Val Faim. The very ground rumbles. In a heartbeat, bursts of flame and thick grey smoke rise up into the air, somewhere close to the Prophet’s Tomb—the Tomb is thankfully unharmed, alongside Odeline’s tall-towering figure. The city immediately drops into complete stillness. They are left to do nothing but watch as the smoke grows and grows and grows, and while the shaking hadn’t lasted longer than a few seconds, it seems to reverberate through their bodies, like the very foundation of the Palace had been shaken and reaped them along with it. Before the rubble even settles, Calandre is swept away by HECTOR and VICTOIRE, each of them hemming the Empress like wings of iron and steel. In their ruler’s wake, CELESTE and LIANE are left to simply stare at the coiling plumes on the horizon and tremble. They watch the ruins with their arms interlocked, as the smog carries over a bitter taste of omens and defeat. Even in this state, the two spies are already planning their next move. It is the life they’ve chosen.
SAINTE and AGRIPPINE bear the brunt of the shock. They are nearly taken off their feet when the explosion occurs, as they were just on the outskirts of the tomb. They help one another to their feet and rush to investigate. The city guards who join the scene are met with a perturbing sight. Rubble lies everywhere, windows of neighboring buildings blown out, and in the epicentre of the destruction stands a mage, shaken and trembling, arms wrapped around herself and desperately attempting to cover the body of her friend, both their faces streaked with soot.
“He didn’t mean to do it,” the mage cries, unwilling to let go of her compatriot as she is pulled away, even as his body goes limp among the stones. “Henri didn’t mean for any of this to happen!” The street is soon blocked off entirely, and stunned passersby are urged to visit the Tomb or the Lion’s Mane for a drink to soothe their spirits, much to the chagrin of DEGARÉ, who has more clientele on their hands than anyone could be reasonably prepared for in such a short window of time. Yet the deluge of customers entails lesser known advantages for the club’s proprietor—especially in times of despair, when purse strings are loose and tongues even looser.
MICHEL and CECILE are commanded to take point on the clean-up of the building. Michel is tasked with coordinating the guardsmen clearing away rubble. Cecile’s role is to smooth over the ruffled feathers of angered noblemen and politicians who come calling to ask why the pesky issue of a desolated building and a dead man in its grip have yet to be resolved by the Empress. It’s tricky work, with even trickier tempers to handle, but they see it done, and within three days of the incident, it is like it never happened. Where the building sat before, now there are only ruins, a barren foundation to be covered up and built upon again by someone with grander designs.
SIDONIE is called upon immediately by Calandre, once the Empress is informed of what happened, along with HELENE. They are to interrogate the surviving mage, and find out what was their purpose in the heart of her empire—and what they hoped to gain from splitting it open. Was the dead mage a madman, or a fool? Were they foreign assassins, an honorless path already trodden by so many of her enemies? Were they zealots of a hidden coven, whose aims to control magic got the better of them? On these questions their fate, and that of so many others, rests unevenly. When the two go to meet her, the woman, named Amelie, is shaken into stupor, entirely unwilling to speak. Not even Calandre’s favored advisors can get anything out of her. Calandre listens intently when she is informed of the matter, and dismisses the two with a simple wave of her hand. “If she won’t tell us directly, there will have to be another way to find out what happened.” It is as much an admonishment as it is an admittance of a dead end.
She does not tell them she has other resources to call upon, and call upon them she does. They come to Val Faim in the shape of ROTH, ADRASTE, and MEDRAUT: two Chevaliers, and one Chevalier-in-training, recalled back from the border of Widrowem to investigate the truth of what happened with the explosion, and whether Alain Gauthier had anything to do with it. MATTHIEU is sent to greet them, as the present superior of the knight order—yet he is quickly rebuffed by his own compatriots, who are apparently more loyal to each other than to their Empress.
The wound of the incident heals relatively quickly, as unspoken horrors do. The death of the man who was supposedly to blame is quick to soothe any worried souls, and Amelie, once she has come to her senses and understood the risk she was in, confirms it to SIDONIE when the other mage visits her in her cell. When she speaks, the girl’s eyes are wild: “Not all is what it seems. My friend only wanted to stop something awful before it began, and it cost him his life.”
That very same night, a faceless assassin attempts to kill SAVATIER in the deepest recesses of the library—only for ISEULT to spear them down from behind a shadowed pillar before they have a chance to draw blood. By morning, Amelie has mysteriously disappeared. Investigations into her vanishing bear no fruit, save for a farewell letter the mage left for her family, now fallen into the hands of VIOLAINE. Amelie was from a noble house: if VIOLAINE wanted to, they could reach out on her behalf and deliver the letter, or they could keep it for later blackmail.
In the midst of all this chaos, Calandre finds herself desperate for a distraction, and can see that her court may very well feel the same. She writes to one of Celestine’s most famed artists, and by the end of the week, SYLVIANE has returned from their expedition into the Obsidienne, alongside their bodyguard, VASKA. Calandre orders them to enliven the palace grounds and paints a series of murals depicting her reigns’ latest achievements—as well as a new portrait to replace the one she had commissioned when she first seized the throne. It is a clever reminder that sometimes a gilded foil hides real triumph beneath. Yet SYLVIANE & VASKA have not come empty-handed, nor are they tongue-tied before Calandre’s command. They are determined to inform the Empress about the concerning sights they’ve witnessed in the Obsidienne. Yet all these attempts are brushed away, first as baubles of passing interest, then as outright fantasies spurned by the solitude of the scorched desert. The shapes of dead bodies awakened to walk, or rifts in the very fabric of the air that shimmer and wrinkle like human skin, and lead to nowhere should a soul step through, are torn from a different cloth than Calandre’s designs for her progressive reign. These old wives tales might be of interest to others: courtiers and commoners alike, such as SIDONIE, SAINTE & AGRIPPINE flock to listen to the painter’s tales. All Calandre does when she is remembered of these discoveries is flatten her mouth into a tight, disapproving line. Some overlook how the Empress’s moods are darkening by the hour.
Not everyone can turn a blind eye to her displeasure, especially those closest to her retinue. CYRIL is witness to Calandre’s frayed nerves firsthand, when ZHENYA pressures the Empress that the North will need more incentive if they are to maintain their trade deal with Val Faim. They are quickly dismissed from her side, and they run into the imperial tailor on the fringe of the hallways. Neither of them can help but eavesdrop on the sobbing fit Calandre falls prey to when she thinks she is alone for the first time. Something is breaking, but neither of them know what, and the decision about whom to ask for help lands in muddied waters. MELODIE, her closest confidante, seems the most obvious choice to be called at her side for comfort, but will Calandre thank them, or resent them for having her weakness noticed and exposed?
In Emperor Tristan’s days, talk spread as fast as a wildfire bracketed by dry grass. While Calandre’s reign has seen some of that blood-hungering cease, the sharks remain desperate for whatever falls into the water, and that hunger has not vanished entirely. It does not take long for many others to discover that Calandre might not be faring as well as she presents herself, in spite of the grand dinners and parties she has hosted in the Summer Palace to try and distract herself.
ROSALIND is one of the first outside of ZHENYA and CYRIL to find out, a not-so-well-kept secret falling right into the palms of their hands. The information goes from them to Alain—who is pleased to be informed. In an effort to secure their loyalty, he gives ROSALIND a task. “See if you engage YVON in a little tête-à-tête, and find out where their true loyalties lie. Lure them on our side, but only promise them enough to prove a guiding light. They are still young and mercurial enough that they must believe the choice is their own. Do this, and I’ll see if I can coordinate a certain royal jeweler’s fall from grace by the time Aude is through.” He leaves them there in the bustling Silver Quarter to make the choice on how to proceed on their own.
Secrets are unearthed, vows and oaths amassed—old debts are summoned up like the souls of the dead, and new scores are forged from thin air. For a while, it seems that Val Faim is pitching to a critical point, a colossus capsizing on its own weight. The threads roped around its people tangle and thrum. And then the skein seems to unsnarl. It lies very still, too much distance between its knots to ever properly destabilize it. The tapestry of faith and power has weathered more tempestuous times than this. The wind smooths over the dust, the storm slackens, and even the spring becomes spring once more. It’s on this day that the tides turn for good.
A Widrowem ship is spotted on the quiet sea, its sails as white as bones. Two ambassadors, themselves of noble lineage in those intricate Widrowish ways, where Gods are ancestors and night is day, step on the shore. CASSIAN and ROWAN have been sent to Val Faim on a mission that feels almost sacred. Yet their Thane’s anger, the chosen ruler of their realm, has nothing holy in it. Their homeland was promised a treaty and a throne years ago. So far, not a single audience has been granted, and this strange Empress balks at marriage as if it were carnage. To add the salt of insult to an open injury, their most trusted man in court was murdered without the right to trial. Hippolyte was gutted for spectacle, a debacle that echoed the barbarians of centuries ago.
It’s Widrowem’s duty to put an end to tyrants. And that is what they came to do.
On that bone-sailed, hollowed-out ship rides another: KARINE, Alain Gauthier's closest compatriot in bloodshed. They, too, have been summoned from Widrowem with a similar purpose. With a hungry smile that cuts their jaw wider, they shake hands with Gauthier on the dock as he pulls them aside. They have business, and if there is anything KARINE thrives at, it is anything to do with death. Imagine their surprise, then, when they are tasked with a more simple duty. Not to kill, but to hunt. Amelie remains unfound, in a city packed to the brim with people, and no one trusts Alain enough yet in the Underworld to give him information of any worth. So he sets his favored assassin on the trail, and tells them not to return until they have what he needs in their grasp.
The stage is set, the spotlight positioned perfectly, the doors to the theater wide open to allow a spring breeze to flow through. Underneath that sweet scent is an undeniable trace of rot. With Widrowem Ambassadors on the scene, their expectations low and ambitions high, and warnings and whispers working their way through the Court—the show has truly begun. Hippolyte's death at Calandre’s command was a mere prelude. What happens now may very well change the fate of all those in Val Faim, forever.
Welcome to our second event! We realize this one is even lengthier than the first, so below, you’ll find a simplified summary and a timestamp breaking down important dates for the month. Like the first event, feel free to thread out flashbacks, continue your threads from the Anniversary timestamp at your leisure, and explore what your character might be up to throughout the month outside of where they’re mentioned in the event. It’s definitely a busy one!
SUMMARY: It’s Maccius, and springtime has officially arrived in Val Faim. What would be a relatively peaceful start to the season otherwise kicks off with catastrophe when a building explodes extremely close to the Prophet’s Tomb. Only one person dies, a man named Henri, who’d apparently been the cause of the explosion, but the details are murky. The only other individual who could provide any information explaining what happened, Amelie, is brought in to be spoken with but gives up nothing before eventually disappearing into thin air. All the while, Alain Gauthier is scheming in the background, trying to take advantage of both Hippolyte’s execution and the chaos caused by the explosion to get a step ahead.
He calls for one of his allies, KARINE, and asks them to help put the pieces together. Alongside KARINE come two Ambassadors from the not-so-far-away Widrowem, ROWAN and CASSIAN are here to negotiate a marriage contract between Widrowem’s Thane and Calandre… or to see if war might be the next best option, as Calandre’s stubbornness over the years has not improved. Calandre, wanting to lighten the mood in the Summer Palace and distract both herself and courtiers from these gloomy events, summons SYLVIANE to come to Val Faim and paint a beautiful new mural as a tribute to Celestine’s strength. With SYLVIANE is their bodyguard, VASKA. Less famous are the three Chevaliers Calandre brings back from the border of Widrowem to investigate the explosion and members of her court. ROTH, ADRASTE, and MEDRAUT might all be a little on the prickly side, but they’re here to see the rough work done. There is a general air of tension to the city. It feels like most people are waiting for the other shoe to drop.
TIMESTAMPS:
The Second of Maccius: The explosion occurs. Henri is dead, and Amelie is brought in to help figure out what happened.
The Sixth of Maccius: The rubble from the explosion is officially cleared away. Sylviane and Vaska arrive to paint Calandre’s mural.
The Twelfth of Maccius: Roth, Adraste, and Medraut make it to Val Faim and are set to the task of figuring out why Henri set the explosion off, how he did it, and where Amelie went. Calandre has given them full reign of the city and those they speak to for details.
The Nineteenth of Maccius: Karine, Cassian, and Rowan arrive in Val Faim. Karine is here on business for Alain Gauthier, but Cassian and Rowan’s goals are much more political.
If you have any questions pertaining to the event, please drop them in the Discord channel! If you need any help plotting, or getting things started, please reach out and we’ll see what I can do to help. The new characters (Roth, Adraste, Medraut, Karine, Cassian, Rowan, Sylviane, and Vaska) are all open for applications. Their skeletons will be posted throughout the day. Thank you again, to all of you, and happy one month of being open!

Chapter 88-2 thoughts
I’m writing this at 6 AM because I CAN’T SLEEP WOO. As mentioned in my snaps, I first read this chapter while in a work call so I’m rereading it now to be able to focus a bit better. Buckle up, this will be long. Spoilers as always.
So Yukine was not necessarily snuggling with the wolves. He was asking them to eat him. I think in all the other bad stuff happening this chapter this detail got overlooked slightly but it’s bad!!!!
Who was the shadow we saw approaching him when he was with the wolves?? Was it trash dad after all? I think it has to be.
really don’t appreciate the Suzuha mention in THE YEAR OF OUR LORD TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY
Yukine was such a caring brother it makes my heart hurt. Yukine in general makes my heart hurt. How did it end up happening that his mom just left him behind??
so if Fujisaki is telling the truth, we now know the context of Yukine’s death. And somehow, I think this is the most unpleasant revelation to come out of this chapter. Big statement, I know, but it explains...a lot.
Yukine was writing letters to his sister in secret for probably years, and as soon as his dad found out...well, we know the rest. I remember speculating (and a few others did too) why Yukine was barefoot and not struggling in that panel a couple chapters back that showed his final moments. So if he was already beaten enough to warrant hospitalization, that would explain why he wasn’t reacting the way he should have been.
At this point, if trash dad WAS telling the truth, I’d be fine if they didn’t show the actual scene of his death and just left it at that. Which means...we now know everything about Yukine’s time when he was alive. And of course there’s a lot we can say to fill out the gaps, but we have all the most important details. Finding out exactly how he died was the last piece in the puzzle. Aside from his full first name, that is.
Yukine yelling at trash dad to shut up and him continuing on anyway :) we really needed to know his final thoughts were “why?” :) I hate it here :)
I really hate even talking about this, this shit is FUCKED
okay so as far as trash dad is aware, Yukine’s body was still in the fridge. Meaning he had no idea that Yato went to dig it up all those months ago. Meaning Nora never breathed a word about it to him. I don’t really know how to express my feelings on this but thank you Nora. we owe you one. I have a feeling trash dad’s intent was not to give him a proper burial (since he’s all about false shows of kindness), though as to what it was, I cannot say.
I think at this point it’s pretty clear that Yato is the one who gave him a proper burial. When the panel of the empty refrigerator dropped a few months back, the fact that the body was missing struck me as just odd, and I thought maybe Yukine’s dad dug it back up for some sort of weird ritual, but judging by what we know now, that doesn’t seem likely. As soon as people started saying Yato buried him I was smacking my face like “of COURSE that’s what happened duh”
so trash dad is confirmed to drop his body in a very similar way to Hiyori, and we also confirmed that the version of him in the black robe is his spirit form. Nora mentioned his “body” a while back but now we finally got to see it. Is he a half ayakashi?? Is this just something he can do because he’s possessing Fujisaki’s body??? gah Adachitoka I want ANSWERS
Hagusa’s vessel name is just a double whammy. It’s like a horrible inversion of the fact that Yato named Kazuma Kazune. “Kazune” has the double meaning of referring to their time limit as well as being the “Kazu” Yato was already familiar with. With Hagusa, that name refers to a type of grain that looks like rice...in other words, something that appears valuable but is worthless. And now we see the vessel name is Yuuki? Adachitoka galaxy brained to punch me in the face.
SO THE REASON YUKINE DOESN’T HAVE A CELL PHONE IS BECAUSE HE DIED BEFORE THEY WERE INVENTED???? I always thought it was because he didn’t need one since Yato, Hiyori, Kazuma, and Kofuku were really the only people he needed to communicate with. but he seemed really excited to use trash dad’s. I’m in pain.
I’m thinking back to when Hiyori almost asked Yukine how he died way back in the beginning of the manga and trash dad now telling Yukine “Hiyori never wanted to know? I bet she did, since humans always want to pry into other people’s business” you shut your mouth
Speaking of Hiyori all we got of her this chapter was her looking pissed off. When she arrives to the fight I just want her to fuck shit up. She may not have her half ayakashi form but she can still snap trash dad’s neck in half.
Perhaps the reason Yukine didn’t find any news articles about himself was because “Haru” was just a nickname. I find it hard to believe that there was nothing about him going missing, especially since his dad made a fuss with putting up missing person flyers everywhere. There’s no way the police wouldn’t have gotten involved, right?
Either way it doesn’t really matter--his dad never got charged with anything even if he was a suspect, and no one else cared enough to look either.
this is so many levels of fucked
“So even now my father is still killing me” this line. THIS LINE. THIS FUCKING LINE. It’s such a succinct and excellent summary of Yukine as a character--as much as we love our son, the fact remains that he is dead. And he is dead because of his father’s abuse and society’s neglect. So no matter however much he grows and changes in the afterlife, it cannot change that his life was cut short far too soon, and everything good that happens to him is overshadowed by the fact that it’s indirectly because of his nasty father. And he got away with it. I can’t.
Before this chapter came out I speculated we’d want to strangle Yukine’s dad even more than we already did. and I was right. but holy shit this line was a kick in the gut while I’m still recovering from “that boy loved people”
Yukine loved people too....he loved people and they turned their backs on him BUT HE NEVER GAVE UP ON LOVING!!! IT JUST TOOK A DIFFERENT SHAPE. FUCK.
So Father knows someone visited the fridge. I wonder if he’s figured out that it was Hiyori yet. I just want her to snap him like a twig. it’s what he deserves.
Father also doesn’t care about Yukine, like, at all (we been knew), to the point he couldn’t even realize the only blond character in this fucking manga now has black hair. MAN. that just says a lot about him, huh.
Are we going to find out whether one of his parents was foreign?? He and Yuka are both noticeably light-haired and it hasn’t been addressed aside from Yukine’s hair color changing.
The hair color change was the only spoiler I saw before the chapter came out and it’s been haunting me ever since. I thought initially Yukine dyed his hair while trash dad was out, but now I wonder if the dark hair is his vessel form? Fujisaki summoned him before leaving, so I don’t know. He does look like his bird ayakashi form with having clawed hands as well.
I remember seeing speculation that trash dad generally tells the truth. well as of this chapter we know he’s a fucking liar. Hiyori left that flower, and I think it will end up being important in the long run when Yukine realizes that she’s the only human who truly cares about him.
Whether trash dad has been telling the truth about other things remains to be seen. We still don’t know how he got out of Yomi, if that’s really what happened to make him immortal. But this lie about the flower seems to be a white lie. He could have just said he didn’t know. If he so readily lied about this, who’s to say he hasn’t been lying about other things too, you know?
Yukine destroying the fridge would normally make me be like good for her.jpeg but since the context is him with trash dad I actually hate it
Since Yukine is now so eager to meet his dad I can’t shake the feeling that he’s dead. It would be the perfect gut-punch for him to demand why his father killed him, only to find out that he’s dead (and maybe even that YATO did it...which would only add more fuel to the fire....fuck) and never get to resolve his turmoil.
I’ve been on the fence about whether Yukine’s dad is still alive but based on this chapter I’m putting my bets on “he’s dead and Yato killed him back in the early manga because that would cause the most suffering at present and that generally seems to be the route Adachitoka takes.”
Like, yeah, if Yato did it it was to protect Yukine, but that doesn’t matter when he’s already so pissed off at Yato.
Yato only fired on trash dad because he didn’t know that it was Yukine with him. And Yukine is again thinking that Yato is trying to hurt him. This chapter is also a horrible inversion of...was it 83-2? where Yato tried to kill trash dad and Yukine stopped him? Except now this time it’s not because Yukine wants answers, it’s because he’s pissed at Yato and loyal to trash dad.
Yato was also a fool for thinking sniping trash dad from afar would work, especially when it didn’t even work the first time.
So now the thing I’ve been working up to talking about throughout these many, many words: Hagusa’s vessel form is...himself. He is the weapon. This is such a wonderful (and terrible) narrative choice I’m delighted by where it will take us physically and metaphorically, but obviously it hurts. A lot.
Yuuki being himself the weapon that trash dad fights Yato with for what may be their final showdown is such a fitting culmination to his character arc in this section of the story. (when trash dad said he would turn him into a weapon I DIDN’T REALIZE IT WAS LITERAL)
This is also a good choice art-wise because it means even more pain with seeing Yukine physically fighting Yato rather than Yato and trash dad fighting with swords or something.
So Yato met with Yuka before (it was a flashback, as many people pointed out to me after I goofed last month lmao) but whether that was earlier today or further in the past remains to be seen. I hope he told her to get out because it seems like trash dad is heading into her house while Yato and Yukine face off.
well. “face off” is maybe an exaggeration. Yato will not be able to fight Yukine at all and I’m anticipating he gets the shit kicked out of him, again, while he tries to make him see reason. bro. I hate this. I really, really hate this. This final fight is going all the ways I knew it would, but hoped it wouldn’t.
Hiyori and Nora come help please
July can’t come soon enough
I’m pretty sure this is my longest thoughts post ever. so much happened and I have so many feelings about all of it.

Dance Naked
The Gospel of Thomas is one of the non-cannonical texts found near Nag Hammadi in 1945. It’s a “sayings Gospel” which means there is no narrative story, just a collection of sayings. The Gospel starts with the pronouncement that these are “hidden sayings of Jesus”. The collection is fascinating and there are several sayings that resonate/provoke me as a transgender man.
Tumblr media
Gospel of Thomas [37]: His disciples say to him: “On what day wilt thou appear to us, and what day shall we see thee?” Jesus says: “When you strip yourselves without being ashamed, when you take off your clothes and lay them at your feet like little children and trample on them! Then [you will become] children of Him who is living, and you will have no more fear.”
I grew up entrenched in purity culture which places a huge emphasis on modesty (especially for women).
I spent a lot of time reading and learning the Bible, especially the letters attributed to Paul. I read about how our flesh was sinful and something to be fought with. I read about Paul’s longing to be spirit.
I learned a lot about bodies and how troublesome they were. Especially female bodies. Especially (though I didn’t know this word at the time) queer bodies. I internalized all of these messages and they, coupled with the discomfort I felt, told me a lot about my body.
I used to fear being raptured because it meant being taken to heaven naked. I didn’t want to go on a mission trip because I knew that I would be forced to shower with other people (and that those who were uncomfortable with that were mocked and told to get over it).
My body was something to be hidden. My body was something to be ashamed of. I called this discomfort modesty and thought it made me holy but really it was self-loathing.
When I first read this verse from the Gospel of Thomas it made me shudder a bit. “When you strip yourselves without being ashamed, when you take off your clothes and lay them at your feet like little children and trample on them!” I can picture what the writer is talking about; the little kid who strips naked and runs through the sprinklers (or the living room). The child who can’t seem to keep a diaper on. The little one who simply delights in their body as something good and holy.
I can’t remember ever feeling like that.
Let’s face it; stripping naked and dancing in the street isn’t high on my bucket list. (Hell, it’s not on the list at all.) So what do I do with a verse like this?
I try to rationalize it: I say, well, he doesn’t really mean that we have to be naked in the street. It’s like those passages about money; we don’t really have to give it all away, we just have to be willing to do it. Maybe it’s the same here: I just have to say that I am willing. But that answer leaves me just as cold as does the rationalization about money. Besides, if I’m being honest, I’m not even sure I would be willing (with money or public nudity).
What does it even mean? What good would that kind of nakedness do? But then I begin to think about what I means to be vulnerable.
I am rarely vulnerable with my body. I stand with my arms crossed. I rarely initiate hugs. I keep myself closed off. I have learned that to be queer makes your physical affection suspect and so I don’t reach out. I have learned that people see me as a threat and so I hold myself apart. I was taught that my affection was unwanted and unwelcome and so I no longer offer it.
Then there are my insecurities: There are the scars on my chest that I am okay with in private but that I fear will invite questions if I am out in public. It’s been almost six years since my chest surgery and I have yet to go shirtless outside or in the presence of friends. I think about the scarring I have from acne (first puberty was awful, second puberty was a million times worse). I think of the parts of my body that no one has seen since I split up with my ex. I worry about my body; about being in an accident and having someone mistreat me because my body doesn’t look the way they think it should. It seems that I am still fighting with my body (or really with other people’s perceptions of my body). And I don’t really know what to do with that.
This is not a conversation about sex (though of course our sexuality is, for many of us, part of the conversation surrounding our bodies). Instead this is a broader conversation about bodies; skin and sinew and muscle. The shape of shoulders and thighs. The way we move alone and together.
For those of us who grew up in purity culture we struggle to unlearn what we’ve been taught. For those of us who are queer or trans there are further layers of shame that feel almost built in to the layers of our skin. We hold and carry our shame with us, often silently.
When I read the Gospel of Thomas I ask:
How can I embrace my body? How can I love my own flesh? How can I be vulnerable with other people? What does it mean to trust someone with my body? What do I still need to unlearn?
What will it take to dance naked and be unashamed?
Tumblr media

Too Fast For Your Own Good Part 2
(part 1) (part 3)
Pairing: Takami Keigo (Hawks x Reader)
Words: 5115
Summary: Soulmate!AU - the first words your soulmate says to you is written on your body in ink.
Genre/Warnings: Some slight swear word usage. Fluff, angst if you squint.
A/N: I ended up writing too much again and decided to write a part 3, because I have a really good ending planned. Please let me know if you liked this! Also posted on my ao3 @ allie_win.
Time stopped.
Beautifully red wings were now still and gray. The delicate feathers that had fallen and were fluttering to the ground stopped and floated around Keigo as if encasing him, his own personal portrait border.
To you, it didn’t really matter that you stopped time, it’s not like you could breath after what he said.
Was this it? Was it really it? Or did you mishear him? Maybe you wouldn’t respond correctly and it would just be another false connection slipping through your fingertips.
“So apparently you’re faster than me?”
Anxiety flooded your skin and you pulled at your costume just enough to see the words printed in black lettering. You used a mirror to check, making sure they were the exact right words.
And they were.
You looked at Hawks, noting just how oblivious he was to what was about to happen. A small smile found their way onto your lips as you admired his sharp eyes, the eyeliner he used only adding to the intrigue his eyes carried with them.
You bit your lip and sat down on the recliner next to the couch. You observed him for as long as you could, taking in every possible detail. The way his neck curved softly and connected to his muscular back. The curves stop suddenly at the protrusion of his wings.
You wondered if his tattoo was in the same place. Between his wings.
How ironic.
A burning sensation filled your lungs and you attempted to hold back as long as you could, trying to figure out just the right words to say. You stood up and paced around the room, debating what was the perfect thing to say.
The first thing you thought of was “What?”
But it didn’t feel right. This was your possible soulmate. You wanted to come across as confident. You bit your lip and sat back in the recliner, not bothering to try and stand back in the same place as you were when you stopped time.
Remember, confidence. Don’t hesitate.
The world suddenly floods again with colors, something that did not faze you at this point, and you watch as Hawks processed you moving from one place to the next. He smiled at you and opened his mouth as if to speak.
You didn’t notice and breathed in before saying, “I know I am.”
“That’s a cool quirk.” Keigo smiled cheerily, speaking over you. “Oh shit, sorry for interrupting. What did you say?”
Holy shit.
Holy shit.
You held the bridge of your nose between your thumb and pointer finger, processing what just happened. He didn’t hear your first words.
You breathed in once more and looked at Keigo straight in the eyes. “I said ‘I know I am.’”
You painfully watched Hawks slowly realize what had just happened. His relaxed face formed a shocked appearance. His mouth formed into an ‘O’ shape and his eyes widened in shock.
“You know you are,” He mumbled as he subconsciously flapped his wings and looked into the coffee table. His eyes were glazed over as if too much was going through his mind right now.
“Yeah,” You replied, eyes focus on the coffee table as well.
“Wow.”
Silence filled the room as you both tried to separately process what to do next. No one talks about how utterly awkward it is after you find your soulmate. You two barely even knew each other.
“So,” Hawks finally spoke up. He had a small smile on his face, still blown away that you, his goddamn soulmate, was sitting right in front of him. “Soulmates.”
“Soulmates,” You grinned back, noting how hard Keigo was trying to lighten the mood.
“Ca-”
The door clicked and a rather average looking man came in. He has a business suit on and a balding head of hair. He looked between the both of you and then mumbled in a voice that seemed almost disappointed. “Hawks, we need you for another interview.”
The number two hero looked at who you assumed to be his manager. He then looked at you, licked and bit his lips. It was an action you would never forget.
“I’m so sorry,” He said, looking at you. “We will talk later, I promise.” He held your hands for a brief moment, his warmth flooding through your system, making you feel immediately better. Safer. “I’ll see you at the obstacle course,” He said once more as he followed the other man through the door and out of your life.
You leaned back in the chair and sighed. Your heart was fluttering at the memory of Keigo’s golden eyes piercing into your soul. For the next while, you were left with your own thoughts, which were simply reliving the least few minutes.
Maybe it was because of how caught up you were in the moment, but you felt crazy with how quickly you became infatuated with Hawks. You groaned and tried to focus more on the competition. Was Hawks even thinking about you the way you were thinking about him?
Eventually, your own manager entered the room and ushered you to get ready. You followed him through the stadium, weaving from side to side to avoid the mass amounts of people working.
Over the sound of hushed voices and rapid steps, a booming sound came over it all, “Hello! And welcome to the competition of the century!”
Ugh, hardly.
The voice was Amplifier, a hero you met in school. You knew she was trying to pump up the crowd, but it was just adding to the pressure. You didn’t even want to do this competition after finding out that your competitor was your soulmate.
Silently, you listened as your manager told you that you would be entering onto the stage by teleporting while Hawks would fly on.
“He’s gonna fly on, talk to the host and when the host says, ‘are you nervous for today?’ they want you to teleport to the stage and reply ‘not at all.’” Your manager explained.
You almost wanted to laugh, but stayed silent because Amplifier's voice was so loud that you knew it would fall of deaf ears.
You arrived behind the red curtain, just where you had been before when you first saw Hawks. Your manager stayed by your side as you waited and listened for your cue. It felt like time was going by slower than usual. You heard the crowd erupted in cheers and you knew Hawks must have flown onto stage.
You were so in your own head that you could barely process the words being said, only listening to the silky sounds of Hawks’ voice as he spoke.
“I’m incredibly excited for today, Telethon is a great person and I’m thrilled to compete against them,” Hawks spoke.
You felt your heartbeat quicken just a bit faster, knowing that your soulmate was speaking well of you before even knowing you well. It made you anticipate learning more about the number 2 hero.
“But are you nervous for today?” Amplifier asked, giving you your cue.
Although you craved hearing Hawks talk just a bit more, you still stopped time once she was done speaking and began making your way to the stage. You stopped right next to Hawks, where your manager told you to stop. You had your own mic and would be able to talk easily.
Time began, color filled your world, and you looked at the camera designated for you, “Not at all.”
The crowd erupted again, almost as loud as they had for Hawks. You cheekily smiled at the crowd and waved. Although you wanted to pay attention to your fans, you couldn’t help but be a little too aware of the body heat coming off of Hawks.
His wings spread out, the left one practically encasing you in warm, soft feathers. No one seemed to notice except for you. It made your brain swirl with nervousness. He was teasing you and you knew it, especially because when you finally gathered the courage to look up at him, he was smirking.
You looked back down, feeling your face heat up once again. You had no clue how he was making you so anxious and shy, normally you were more confident in yourself.
You tried your best to focus on the interview, answering all the questions as best you could. Eventually, Amplifier told everyone to tune in in just half an hour to see the competition.
“Goodbye, Hawks and Telethon! We will see you soon!” Amplifier said, cueing you both to exit the stage once more using your quirks.
As Hawks waved goodbye and pushed himself into the air, you paused time and practically ran off stage. According to the schedule you were emailed, you had 10 minutes before you needed to make your way to the obstacle course. You rushed away, determined to grab some water and help yourself calm down beforehand.
You arrived at the green room and grabbed a cup of water before starting time again. You took in a deep breath, filling your empty lungs with fresh air once more, before gulping down your glass of water. You sat on the comfy chair and focused on your breathing.
Eventually, the door clicked and Hawks walked in. When he saw you, his eyes widened slightly before he smiled. If you were paying much attention, you might have even thought the look he gave you was one of pure admiration and love.
“Dang, you sure are fast,” Hawks said as he too grabbed himself a glass of water. “I’ll have to amp up my game for the obstacle course.”
You chuckled. A kind of chuckle that sent shivers down someone’s spine, and made the air bright, clear and filled with an almost floral smell. No matter how nervous you were that your soulmate was right in front of you, you could enjoy a good joke.
It was obvious that neither of you cared too much about the competition. Or at least you hoped.
Hawks then sat down on the couch next to you, leaning back, breathing in, and then taking a sip of the shockingly ice cold water. “Listen,” He spoke, breaking the silence that had formed around you both. “I’m sorry about being such an ass.”
You looked at him quizzically, silently asking for him to further elaborate.
“The comment I made to the paparazzi. I was so riled up,” Takami swept one of his gloved hands through his golden hair before taking off his yellow-tinted glasses and looking at you. A cold shiver ran up your spine. “I just hate paparazzi,” He sighed, “and people doubting me. I know it must have been scary to see such a popular hero bashing on you, and I didn’t mean to scare you.”
It felt nice. It felt so nice having him acknowledge you like that.
It made your shoulders less tense and you really started to think about how grateful you were to be bonded together with a man so confident that he could also take a step back and think about how his actions impact those around him.
You looked into the clear water on your glass, admiring the smooth ice cubes, before looking back up at Hawks with a smile. “Thank you,” You spoke, your voice sounding like pure honey to his ears. He could have melted right then and there. “It’s very nice of you to say that and I hope the competition today isn’t too stressful.”
Hawks smiled back, his own bright teeth shining like the sun. “We will just have to do our best,” He paused for a moment, “But I’m sure I’ll win,” He joked.
Your laughter filled the room, warming Hawks’ body once more. You were tempted to tell him the truth about your quirk, but decided to wait until the right moment.
Soulmates.
It felt all so right now.
Your conversation continued and you both eventually made your way together towards the course. When you arrived, you each separated to go talk to your respective manager.
Amplifier was once again pumping up the crowd, introducing each of you as you walked onto the stage.
The obstacle course was then explained as being a total of 3 miles long, each mile providing a ew surprise. There were a total of 6 checkpoints where we had to grab our respective flags, Hawks’ being yellow and your being green. You and Hawks walked toward the start, noticing the plethora of positioned cameras to catch every second.
Not like that even matters with your quirk.
You wondered why they decided to do an obstacle course instead of simulating a crisis where you and Hawks could show off your rescue skills. It would make sense considering you were both primarily concerned with using your quirks for rescue missions. As you looked at all the cameras once more, you realized it probably wouldn’t be fun to simulate a crisis, especially after the earthquake villain incident.
You shook your head and focused back in on the course.
An air horn sounded and Hawks was off. You paused time and admired your now still soulmate, he had a confident smirk on his face.
You didn’t waste much time and rushed forward to the first obstacle, multiple walls, each different sizes, each with different negatives.
You rolled your eyes, already noticing how this course was much better for Hawks. It was a shame you couldn’t teleport around all these walls like the world thought you could.
Slowly, you made your way over and around the walls, watching out for spikes and slippery spots. It was a shame everyone would think you simply teleported through these obstacles when you actually had to do much more work to get by.
Once again, you felt a pang in your heart because of how misunderstood your quirk was. Sure, you could explain it, but would people listen? They never did in the past.
Eventually, you grabbed your first green flag, it was placed on top of the tallest wall. You started time again for only a second to take a breath before stopping it again and continuing on.
For just a mere millisecond, the crowd saw you on the cameras, only a moment after the competition began. In that time, Hawks had only arrived at the first wall, and saw you much farther ahead of him already grabbing the first flag.
You kept on running through your own personal gray world. Just because time was stopped didn’t mean you couldn’t still experience pain, and so you made sure to be extra careful while passing over each wall.
At the end of the mile was the second checkpoint. You grabbed it and continued to run, taking this time to take in a few breaths. In that time, Hawks was able to arrive at the first checkpoint.
The path suddenly turned to dirt and you saw multiple sensors along the walls as well as the cameras. They were placed high and low so that even Hawks would set them off. Tentatively, you began crossing.
Each sensor connected to another, creating strings of red lights. You avoided them as you crossed, curious as to what would happen when you set them off. On the ground was a rock, which you picked up and tossed.
Nothing happened.
You furrowed your eyebrows in curiosity.
You started time, planning to grab another rock and throw it.
Before you had a chance, the multiple multiple sensors the previous rock hit went off. As a result, a total of four mechanical arms reached out of nowhere. They grasped at the air and began shaking violently before letting go of their grip and retracting.
You stopped time.
A watch was built into your hero costume to help you keep track of how long time was stopped for. With that watch you noted that the process took a total of 5 seconds. You knew doing that gave Hawks more time to catch up, but it also showed you that these censors could not affect you when time was stopped like fire or spikes could. This meant that you could just run right through.
On top of that, the censor would end up going off once you turned time back on, which could be a horrible surprise for Hawks.
You sprinted through this mile, stopping only to grab the two checkpoint flags and starting time to take a few breaths. At the fourth checkpoint, you took a moment to look back and noticed Hawks was just now entering the second mile.
His gray, unmoving face was quizzical. He had noticed the censors and seen a few in action as a result of your movement. You hoped that maybe he was going too fast to process the mechanical arms and would get caught in one.
You looked ahead of you once more and entered into the final mile.
You stopped as you came to a cliff, you practically slid off because you were too busy looking at Hawks. The impulse to catch your breath was high, but you refused. You did not have the advantage here.
You looked over the vast, empty terrain. There were a few spots throughout the drop where people could stand, one of them holding the fifth flag. You would have to be incredibly careful with crossing.
You were sure that when this course was made, the creators thought you would easily be able to teleport through these rocks, making their purpose obsolete. It wouldn’t make for a fun show, but you figured the creators were probably tired.
Suddenly, you really regretted not working on increasing your jump distance over the past couple days.
You looked back at Hawks again and then back at the cliff. You gulped down the lump forming in your throat and took a few steps back to get a running start.
Although fearful, you still made it. And so, the processes of carefully jumping from perch to perch began. Unfortunately, the stress and a physical draining this activity caused made you need to start time more frequently.
You jumped up from a rock, started time, took a breath, stopped time, and landed safely. The fifth green flag was now in your grasp, All that was left was to make it the rest of the way and grab your final flag, signaling the end of the competition.
You took another jump, once again using your air time as a chance to take in a breath. Although you knew you must have looked ridiculous to the people watching you, your hot lungs were craving cool air and you were not going to deny them when you could easily fall more than fifty feet.
As you landed, just before you stopped time, you felt a large gust of wind. It took you a moment to register, but once you did, you immediately got to the ground, afraid the wind would blow you off. You looked up, wondering if you tripped a censor that you hadn’t seen. However, when you looked ahead of you, you saw Hawks' still body.
He had just flown past you and grabbed the fifth flag. You scolded yourself for not paying enough attention to the blond. Without wasting much time, you began jumping from perch to perch, no longer starting time.
If you were correct, Hawks was only 10 feet away from swooping in and grabbing the last flag. You could not risk starting time anymore to take a breath.
As you reached the last perch, it hit you.
Even if you could win, even if it would help your career, was it worth it?
Hawks was obviously proud of his speed.
You bit your lip and looked back at the hero.
His head was stopped, but you could see he was turning away from looking at where you were before, a wide grin plastered on his face. You were sure it was because he was finally ahead of you, satisfied that he surpassed you. His gray wings were contracting, as if about to give him another push for speed.
This gorgeous man was your soulmate. Even in the gray world you currently lived in, Hawks was immaculate in your eyes. His flowing hair seemed as if it was almost still moving and the bright shine in his mischievous eyes were prevalent.
You did not need to win to feel happy, you were happy knowing that Hawks’ was happy. He obviously wanted this win more than you, no matter how much he brushed it off.
You jumped to land onto the solid ground, you were only a few feet away from the flags. You moved to try and get the best view of him winning.
You started time, his wings were once again vermilion and a blur of yellow and red flew passed you to grab the final flag.
The crowd erupted, Hawks grinned at you, and Amplifier immediately came over to get his winning statement,
~~
You and Hawks both gave great answers to Amplifier’s questions before you were ushered off to get changed.
“Meet me before you go,” Hawks whispered before he forked off to go meet his manager.
You nodded and went off to meet your own manager, who whisked you away into the changing room. Luckily, a couple people were there to help you get out of your sticky-with-sweat costume and get you showered.
You still had one last camera appearance, so the team worked to style your hair and do your makeup for the cameras. You were now dressed in a flowing dress shirt and pants that matched well with the cool summer night. You noted how much the weather had lightened up from the rain in the morning.
Once pampered and dressed, you thanked the team for all their great work, and made your way out onto the stage. You, the loser, were going to give your speech before Takami. No one else was going to be on stage, just you and a microphone.
Your speech was short and sweet.
You thanked everyone for their support and told your fans that you would continue to try your best before congratulating Hawks.
“Now, I hear we have a few contestant winners who get to ask a question,” You began, looking around the massive crowd, “So, please, go ahead.” You ushered to a young boy in the audience who was given a microphone.
“Um, yeah,” He began, “So you kept popping back into view so often during the last mile and I was wondering why you didn’t just teleport across? Were you too tired to travel long distances?”
You looked at the boy, then the whole crowd as they awaited your answer.
He gave you an out. You could easily just say that you were tired, brushing off his question. Something in you pulled at your gut, a nervous feeling spreading from its pit to affect your whole body. You suddenly wanted to vomit.
It was as if your own gut was telling you not to lie.
A rather sheepish chuckle came out of your mouth and you sat down on the stool they provided you. “Well,” You started, “About that.”
Everyone looked at you with such tentative eyes. They were hanging on your every word, wondering what you were about to reveal.
“My quirk isn’t exactly teleporting,” You used your free hand to scratch the back of your head, careful not to mess up the hairstyle you were given for this appearance. You suddenly felt happy knowing that the shirt you were wearing was dark enough to hide your sweat. “It’s more like stopping time.”
You heard the crowd begin to mumble, not completely able to pick up on any specific words. Everyone turned their heads to each other to debate what you had just said.
“Please,” You asked,” Allow me to explain more.” You stood up from the stool and walked closer to the people around you, a kindred smile finding its way onto your lips.
This was a rather delicate situation, and you needed to choose your words carefully. There was no way you could get out of this awkward time without any new haters, but you could try your best to keep your greatest fans by your side.
You looked at the people around you before speaking once more, “I can stop time, but to you it looks like teleporting. If I can speak honestly with you all, throughout my training at U.A., the school misunderstood my quirk and I was too nervous to correct them.”
You laughed at yourself and you heard a few people in the crowd join in. It made your twisting insides calm down just a little. Slowly, the hole you dug yourself was being filled, you on the outside of it.
“I used it as an opportunity to surprise people during battles, but seeing as I am a rescue hero,” You looked at the little boy who was staring at you, “I don’t need to surprise people. I need to calm them down. I need to let you all know that I will save you, stop time for however long necessary to save you from whatever is hurting you.”
You nervously stood center stage, waiting for their response. Slowly, a few people clapped, and some more die hard fans outwardly cheered for you. You graciously accepted the kindness with a smile and a quiet “Thank you.” Once it died down, you answered a few more questions until you were signalled that time was up.
“Well,” You started, “I would love to talk to you all forever, but time is up for me.” You smiled and shrugged your shoulders. “However, please welcome the winner of today, although I don’t think anyone was surprised such a strong hero would win, Hawks!”
You drowned out the sound of the cheering crowd and instead watched as Hawks walked in from off stage. He was still wearing his hero costume, which didn’t surprise you. The number 2 hero was almost always wearing the warm outfit, making sure he was always able to fly safely.
You smiled brightly at the handsome man in front of you and watched nervously as he looked your outfit up and down. He went to grab the mic and pulled you into a hug, placing his lips by your ear so the audience couldn’t see.
“You look nice, meet me in the green room,” He mumbled, his whispers sending shivers down your spine, before gingerly taking the mic from you.
The hand he had placed on the small of your back massaged at your sore muscles, a silent way of attempting to calm you down. Being a hero could be nerve-wracking, but you did not expect the number 2 hero, Mr. Popular, to be so kind. He made sure to brush his warm fingers against yours, winking at you as his warmth spread throughout your body.
You rushed off the stage before anyone would notice the redness spreading from your neck to your cheeks. You met up with your manager as you walked to your changing room to grab your bag.
Your manager, who also didn’t know about your secret, was livid.
“How could you not tell me?” They questioned as you reached for the large bag holding your personal belongings. Your hero costume was hanging up on the coat rack.
“I know,” You whined and pouted, “I’m sorry.” You felt the weight on your shoulder lighten a little from confessing your lie and apologizing.
Your manager groaned and held the bridge of his nose before speaking, “I’m here for you, ya know? You could have told me.”
“I know,” You repeat yourself, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” They replied. “There’s just going to be a lot of P.R. work. Might have to officially bring in a representative from the agency.”
You smiled at your manager’s quick recovery. “Thank you,” You said. “I promise I will do anything necessary. I trust you”
“You better,” They jokingly replied. “Anyways,” Your manager pulled out his phone and began looking through notifications as he spoke, “I have to go home, make sure my kids are in bed.” He looked back up at you. “I will see you at the agency tomorrow, 3 pm. We must talk about all of this.”
You nodded and saluted your manager who proceeded to jokingly push you. You easily maintained your balance, even with your hands full, and laughed. Your manager said his goodbyes and you slowly made your way to the green room, your mind now able to wander to what Hawks would want.
In an attempt to distract yourself, you sat down on the chair and scrolled through your phone at all the new notifications you were getting.
Eventually, the door swung open and you looked up to see Hawks’ smiling face. Although filled with nerves, you couldn’t stop the warmth that spread through you at seeing his shining face. No one ever described their experience like this, and you were sure yours would be a fun one to tell.
It felt weird trying to let yourself rest into and be comforted by a stranger, even though the universe was telling you that you were forever destined. Regardless, you still allowed Hawks to gingerly sit next to you and take your hand in his.
“Crazy day,” He breathlessly spoke, as if he had run from off the stage directly to you.
You nodded, not feeling the need to verbally respond.
“How are you?” He asked before raising your hand to his lips and kissing your knuckles one by one.
You thought over your response and focused on the tingling sensation his soft lips left upon your skin. “I’m good,” You paused, “Better than.”
“Me too,” He replied immediately, not needing you to even ask.
As silence filled the room, you allowed your brain to wander.
What next?
Would you go home, his number now in your phone?
Would you text him all night? Maybe even facetime?
Or would both of you be too nervous to initiate anything?
Your attention was brought back to the present by the sound of Hawks sighing, letting go of your hand, and leaning back to rest his head against the couch.
You looked at the gorgeous man with a quizzical face. Before you could ask, his head popped up straight and he looked at you.
“Are you hungry?” He asked, “I’m starving.” Keigo suddenly stood up and looked over at the food left. “Ugh,” He groaned, “This shit looks nasty.”
You watched as Hawks wandered around the room, contemplating what to say next.
He grinned at you, “Do you want to get some food? I’m craving Korean food.”

Liber Cordis Cincti Serpente Sub Figura LXV, cap. 5
Liber Cordis Cincti Serpente
A.˙.A.˙. Publication in Class A. Imprimatur: N. Fra A.˙. A.˙.
V
1.  Ah! my Lord Adonai, that dalliest with the Magister in the Treasure-House of Pearls, let me listen to the echo of your kisses.
  2. Is not the starry heaven shaken as a leaf at the tremulous rapture of your love? Am not I the flying spark of light whirled away by the great wind of your perfection?
  3. Yea, cried the Holy One, and from Thy spark will I the Lord kindle a great light; I will burn through the great city in the old and desolate land; I will cleanse it from its great impurity.
  4. And thou, O prophet, shalt see these things, and thou shalt heed them not.
  5. Now is the Pillar established in the Void; now is Asi fulfilled of Asar; now is Hoor let down into the Animal Soul of Things like a fiery star that falleth upon the darkness of the earth.
  6. Through the midnight thou art dropt, O my child, my conqueror, my sword-girt captain, O Hoor! and they shall find thee as a black gnarl'd glittering stone, and they shall worship thee.
  7. My prophet shall prophesy concerning thee; around thee the maidens shall dance, and bright babes be born unto them. Thou shalt inspire the proud ones with infinite pride, and the humble ones with an ecstasy of abasement; all this shall transcend the Known and the Unknown with somewhat that hath no name. For it is as the abyss of the Arcanum that is opened in the secret Place of Silence.
  8. Thou hast come hither, O my prophet, through grave paths. Thou hast eaten of the dung of the Abominable Ones; thou hast prostrated thyself before the Goat and the Crocodile; the evil men have made thee a plaything; thou hast wandered as a painted harlot, ravishing with sweet scent and Chinese colouring, in the streets; thou hast darkened thine eyepits with Kohl; thou hast tinted thy lips with vermilion; thou hast plastered thy cheeks with ivory enamels. Thou hast played the wanton in every gate and by-way of the great city. The men of the city have lusted after thee to abuse thee and to beat thee. They have mouthed the golden spangles of fine dust wherewith thou didst bedeck thine hair; they have scourged the painted flesh of thee with their whips; thou hast suffered unspeakable things.
  9. But I have burnt within thee as a pure flame without oil. In the midnight I was brighter than the moon; in the daytime I exceeded utterly the sun; in the byways of of thy being I inflamed, and dispelled the illusion.
 10. Therefore thou art wholly pure before Me; therefore thou art My virgin unto eternity.
 11. Therefore I love thee with surpassing love; therefore they that despise thee shall adore thee.
 12. Thou shalt be lovely and pitiful toward them; thou shalt heal them of the unutterable evil.
 13. They shall change in their destruction, even as two dark stars that crash together in the abyss, and blaze up in an infinite burning.
 14. All this while did Adonai pierce my being with his sword that hath four blades; the blade of the thunderbolt, the blade of the Pylon, the blade of the serpent, the blade of the Phallus.
 15. Also he taught me the holy unutterable word Ararita, so that I melted the sixfold gold into a single invisible point, whereof naught may be spoken.
 16. For the Magistry of this Opus is a secret magistry; and the sign of the master thereof is a certain ring of lapis-lazuli with the name of my master, who am I, and the Eye in the Midst thereof.
 17. Also He spake and said: This is a secret sign, and thou shalt not disclose it unto the profane, nor unto the neophyte, nor unto the zelator, nor unto the practicus, nor unto the philosophus, nor unto the lesser adept, nor unto the greater adept.
 18. But unto the exempt adept thou shalt disclose thyself if thou have need of him for the lesser oÿerations of thine art.
 19. Accept the worship of the foolish people, whom thou hatest. The Fire is not defiled by the altars of the Ghebers, nor is the Moon contaminated by the incense of them that adore the Queen of Night.
 20. Thou shalt dwell among the people as a precious diamond among cloudy diamonds, and crystals, and pieces of glass. Only the eye of the just merchant shall behold thee, and plunging in his hand shall single thee out and glorify thee before men.
 21. But thou shalt heed none of this. Thou shalt be ever the heart, and I the serpent will coil close about thee. My coil shall never relax throughout the æons. Neither change nor sorrow nor unsubstantiality shall have thee; for thou art passed beyond all these.
 22. Even as the diamond shall glow red for the rose, and green for the rose-leaf; so shalt thou abide apart from the Impressions.
 23. I am thou, and the Pillar is 'stablished in the void.
 24. Also thou art beyond the stabilities of Being and of Consciousness and of Bliss; for I am thou, and the Pillar is 'stablished in the void.
 25. Also thou shalt discourse of these things unto the man that writeth them, and he shall partake of them as a sacrament; for I who am thou am he, and the Pillar is 'stablished in the void.
 26. From the Crown to the Abyss, so goeth it single and erect. Also the limitless sphere shall glow with the brilliance thereof.
 27. Thou shalt rejoice in the pools of adorable water; thou shalt bedeck thy damsels with pearls of fecundity; thou shalt light flame like licking tongues of liquor of the Gods between the pools.
 28. Also thou shalt convert the all-sweeping air into the winds of pale water, thou shalt transmute the earth into a blue abyss of wine.
 29. Ruddy are the gleams of ruby and gold that sparkle therein; one drop shall intoxicate the Lord of the Gods my servant.
 30. Also Adonai spake unto V.V.V.V.V. saying: O my little one, my tender one, my little amorous one, my gazelle, my beautiful, my boy, let us fill up the pillar of the Infinite with an infinite kiss!
 31. So that the stable was shaken and the unstable became still.
 32. They that beheld it cried with a formidable affright: The end of things is come upon us.
 33. And it was even so.
 34. Also I was in the spirit vision and beheld a parricidal pomp of atheists, coupled by two and by two in the supernal ecstasy of the stars. They did laugh and rejoice exceedingly, being clad in purple robes and drunken with purple wine, and their whole soul was one purple flower-flame of holiness.
 35. They beheld not God; they beheld not the Image of God; therefore were they arisen to the Palace of the Splendour Ineffable. A sharp sword smote out before them, and the worm Hope writhed in its death-agony under their feet.
 36. Even as their rapture shore asunder the visible Hope, so also the Fear Invisible fled away and was no more.
 37. O ye that are beyond Aormuzdi and Ahrimanes! blessèd are ye unto the ages.
 38. They shaped Doubt as a sickle, and reaped the flowers of Faith for their garlands.
 39. They shaped Ecstasy as a spear, and pierced the ancient dragon that sat upon the stagnant water.
 40. Then the fresh springs were unloosed, that the folk athirst might be at ease.
 41. And again I was caught up into the presence of my Lord Adonai, and the knowledge and Conversation of the Holy One, the Angel that Guardeth me.
 42. O Holy Exalted One, O Self beyond self. O Self-Luminous Image of the Unimaginable Naught, O my darling, my beautiful, come Thou forth and follow me.
 43. Adonai, divine Adonai, let Adonai initiate refulgent dalliance! Thus I concealed the name of Her name that inspireth my rapture, the scent of whose body bewildereth the soul, the light of whose soul abaseth this body unto the beasts.
 44. I have sucked out the blood with my lips; I have drained Her beauty of its sustenance; I have abased Her before me, I have mastered Her, I have possessed Her, and Her life is within me. In Her blood I inscribe the secret riddles of the Sphinx of the Gods, that none shall understand, -- save only the pure and voluptuous, obscene, the androgyne and the gynander that have passed beyond the bars of the prison that the old Slime of Khem set up in the Gates of Amennti.
 45. O my adorable, my delicious one, all night will I pour out the libation on Thine altars; all night will I burn the sacrifice of blood; all night will I swing the thurible of my delight before Thee, and the fervour of the orisons shall intoxicate Thy nostrils.
 46. O Thou who camest from the land of the Elephant, girt about with the tiger's pell, and garlanded with the lotus of the spirit, do Thou inebriate my life with Thy madness, that She leap at my passing.
 47. Bid Thy maidens who follow Thee bestrew us a bed of flowers immortal, that we may take our pleasure thereupon. Bid Thy satyrs heap thorns among the flowers, that we may take our pain thereupon. Let the pleasure and pain be mingled in one supreme offering unto the Lord Adonai!
 48. Also I heard the voice of Adonai the Lord the desirable one concerning that which is beyond.
 49. Let not the dwellers in Thebai and the temples thereof prate ever of the Pillars of Hercules and the Ocean of the West. Is not the Nile a beautiful water?
 50. Let not the priest of Isis uncover the nakedness of Nuit, for every step is a death and a birth. The priest of Isis lifted the veil of Isis, and was slain by the kisses of her mouth. Then was he the priest of Nuit, and drank of the milk of the stars.
 51. Let not the failure and the pain turn aside the worshippers. The foundations of the pyramid were hewn in the living rock ere sunset; did the king weep at dawn that the crown of the pyramid was yet unquarried in the distant land?
 52. There was also an humming-bird that spake unto the horned cerastes, and prayed him for poison. And the great snake of Khem the Holy One, the royal Uræus serpent, answered him and said:
 53. I sailed over the sky of Nu in the car called Millions-of-Years, and I saw not any creature upon Seb that was equal to me. The venom of my fang is the inheritance of my father, and of my father's father; and how shall I give it unto thee? Live thou and thy children as I and my fathers have lived, even unto an hundred millions of generations, and it may be that the mercy of the Mighty Ones may bestow upon thy children a drop of the poison of eld.
 54. Then the humming-bird was afflicted in his spirit, and he flew unto the flowers, and it was as if naught had been spoken between them. Yet in a little while a serpent struck him that he died.
 55. But an Ibis that meditated upon the bank of Nile the beautiful god listened and heard. And he laid aside his Ibis ways, and became as a serpent, saying Peradventure in an hundred millions of millions of generations of my children, they shall attain to a drop of the poison of the fang of the Exalted One.
 56. And behold! ere the moon waxed thrice he became an Uræus serpent, and the poison of the fang was established in him and his seed even for ever and for ever.
 57. O thou Serpent Apep, my Lord Adonai, it is a speck of minutest time, this travelling through eternity, and in Thy sight the landmarks are of fair white marble untouched by the tool of the graver. Therefore Thou art mine, even now and for ever and for everlasting. Amen.
 58. Moreover, I heard the voice of Adonai: Seal up the book of the Heart and the Serpent; in the number five and sixty seal thou the holy book.
As fine gold that is beaten into a diadem for the fair queen of Pharaoh, as great stones that are cemented together into the Pyramid of the ceremony of the Death of Asar, so do thou bind together the words and the deeds, so that in all is one Thought of Me thy delight Adonai.
 59. And I answered and said: It is done even according unto Thy word. And it was done. And they that read the book and debated thereon passed into the desolate land of Barren Words. And they that sealed up the book into their blood were the chosen of Adonai, and the Thought of Adonai was a Word and a Deed; and they abode in the Land that the far-off travellers call Naught.
 60. O land beyond honey and spice and all perfection! I will dwell therein with my Lord for ever.
 61. And the Lord Adonai delighteth in me, and I bear the Cup of His gladness unto the weary ones of the old grey land.
 62. They that drink thereof are smitten of disease; the abomination hath hold upon them, and their torment is like the thick black smoke of the evil abode.
 63. But the chosen ones drank thereof, and became even as my Lord, my beautiful, my desirable one. There is no wine like unto this wine.
 64. They are gathered together into a glowing heart, as Ra that gathereth his clouds about Him at eventide into a molten sea of Joy; and the snake that is the crown of Ra bindeth them about with the golden girdle of the death-kisses.
 65. So also is the end of the book, and the Lord Adonai is about it on all sides like a Thunderbolt, and a Pylon, and a Snake, and a Phallus, and in the midst thereof he is like the Woman that jetteth out the milk of the stars from her paps; yea, the milk of the stars from her paps.
Love is the law, love under will.

thoughts on starry after multiple listens
(dated July 8, 2020 because i might make another one)
Edit: I SHOULD FACT CHECK MORE
the Starry soundtrack is as impressionist as the painters it invokes by energy alone, which is impressive given the style of music used (of which i’m fine with, but not partial to)
the Prologue does this right off the bat
the people of Monmartre are very critical of the rest of France and I adore it
i can feel theo’s overwhelment in Impress Me
Impress Me does a wonderful job at introducing the setting of the show
that song is a ball of pulsating yearning—no wait that’s the whole show
Theo got so stressed he walked blindly into Madame Segatori’s cafe
learning that the Le Tambourin was named as such due to its tambourine aesthetic via Vincent’s portrait of Segatori is just incredible to me; the table is shaped like a tambourine
“If Paris is the world, Monmartre is Bethlehem; and art is our Amen” sounds so powerful
A New Horizon is so warm
i expect Theo and Vincent to be very cuddly with each other everytime they interact
“dream with me, dear brother” is the energy of this song
french wheat fields will forever haunt me because of this damn musical
*insert Do You Like the Color of the Sky? post here*
like, so much emphasis to the sky
Vincent’s dreaming leaking into Theo’s trading practice surely must be a sight to see
chain imagery hits hard after hearing Wheat Fields/Finale Ultimo
in this yellow house, we dream of freedom
“should I really take this giant risk?” “brother, I took a giant risk coming here—fuck yeah do it!”
United in Distaste reeks of Vincent’s intimidation—it has new kid in school energy and I am living for it
Vincent coming to Monmartre (and when he arrives in Arles) like “Hey, I’m new in town, and it gets worse,”
Bernard has apparently spent enough time with Theo to be able to identify Vincent by frowning alone
Rude of Gauguin to yoink Vincent’s painting like that; Segatori immediately hangs it tho—
Gauguin sounds like he’s going to corrupt anyone who approaches him—dude announces his horny nature during his introduction
Gauguin IS a savage and a whore and the best thing about that is that he knows it; even better knowing the vision of his costume
Segatori’s displeasure throughout the song implies that the artists that frequent her cafe also argue amongst themselves frequently
“keep in mind that we’re academic rejects, Vincent”
with the way Degas, Pissarro, and Morisot tease at Gauguin (noting that Gauguin, Bernard, and Toulouse-Lautrec are together in a later song), it sounds like they’re are hurling insults from a separate tambourine table
Toulouse-Lautrec sounds dramatic; Bernard sounds like he’s not sure where he is artistically—both are a mood
Of the post-impressionist table, the only one retaliating with genuine insults is Toulouse-Lautrec; Bernard and Gauguin only end up defending themselves while Toulouse was ready to tear down Degas and Morisot
Pissarro IS old (at this period in time in the musical) damn
Morisot is unyielding with her insults, “speaking of size—“ holy shit oh no
i reiterate—why is Toulouse-Lautrec the only one actually speaking in a French accent; almost everyone there is French
since I’m aggressively referring to him, I think Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec merits a musical of his own, and that’s based on what first learned about him when I first listened to Starry
by extension, also Berthe Morisot
Monmartre’s artists be like “We’re very critical of ourselves and each other, and while that’s worth being intimidated by, don’t be intimidated by us! What do you have to bring to the table, foreign painter?”
Something poetic about how what Vincent wants being what all the artists want hereby making him a member of their squad is so warm to me—galleries are gravity INDEED
“We will embrace the madness we design, or lose our mind,” IS THIS FORSHADOWING BECAUSE IT FUCKING SOUNDS LIKE IT
“i am loving this! YES, GET ANGRY!” if only i can identify who said this
Something After All is directed towards Vincent, right? It better be, I lack context
Theo’s yearning is so relatable and I fear not being able to fulfill it
bless Kelly and Matt for giving Jo so much depth in Enlightenment
apparently she deadass learned English for the purpose of translating the letters she had compiled??? yo i love that
poetic how Jo invokes making a legacy since she’s the one who actually preserves her brother-in-law’s legacy (and by extension, herself and her husband’s legacies)
at first listen, i immediately drew a comparison to Hamilton’s Eliza; Jo is better both musically and literally, given that Vincent van Gogh is far more relevant than Alexander Hamilton will ever be, even with LMM’s musical
not trying to start beef, just an observation
Jo’s yearning is also such a mood
fire, light, and road imagery being invoked huh
it is by this point i’ve to the realization that the reasons one goes to Monmartre that was cited in Impress Me tie in very well to the individual characters’ desires in this show
Where Are We Going? goes so hard ugh yes
“I need a stronger strategy to seize my immortality!” Gauguin’s incredible ambition is the root of his dissatisfaction; doesn’t help that he’s impulsive both in the musical and IRL
Toulouse prioritizes integrity and Bernard prioritizes progression—I wonder what this means for their characters in the show
Toulouse and Bernard calling Gauguin out on his known shitty behaviors feels like they’ll be problems Vincent will have to deal with in Act 2, when they live together
this is where Gauguin leaves for Martinique, right???
which one is the act 1 closer, really??? The Sower or The Road??? help me please
everyone in town is really concerned for Vincent
it wams me how much Segatori believes in him
Bernard’s right, Vincent van Gogh’s artstyle IS a melting pot
learning that Toulouse-Lautrec capitalized on his art during the peak of his career really adds weight to his concerns on Vincent’s inability to sell
i like to imagine the everyone’s in the gallery during The Sower
Theo and Jo’s relationship progressing as Vincent’s works don’t sell hits upon realization
Theo falling hard when he learns that he and Jo yearn for the same thing tho
recontextualizing the imagery that Vincent found beauty in into imagery that demonstrates his person is just mighty good of Kelly and Matt
then again, so much of his person is in the artwork to begin with
“and everyone knows your reap what you sow.” w o a h!!!
The Road starts like a dramatization of one of Vincent’s breakdowns and how he copes with them, or perhaps this starts after one??? The opening verses suggest a lot
also ties his road to his dream of freedom with what i believe is his travel to Arles
“North, South, East, West—navigate from inside you,” = “With conscience as my compass,”
“i am guided towards the night” this Vincent knows the answer but is so clearly far from its reach and is desperately trying to figure out how to
soul of fire, crystal heart and blizzard-like brain; the man is passionate and everyone knows it
“Fascinating, but maybe just a little too soon,” sounds like that at this point, Toulouse-Lautrec and Bernard genuinely recognize and admire Vincent’s talents, but also understand that the world is still against him and that they have the experience to prove it
the “sunlight and storms” imagery always concern Theo, Jo, and Vincent’s relationship with each other
Gauguin popping up in this song with the compass imagery implies the show’s going to make him a pretty interesting foil to Vincent; this sounds like him traveling back to Paris, or at least him attempting to vibe in Martinique
this hurts when you remember what happens to Vincent
“curse of the gifted” is a phrase i am too afraid to understand
DYLAN SAUNDERS CAN SLAY ME WITH HIS VOICE
The Yellow House sounds yellow somehow
who clears their throat before writing a letter???
Gauguin’s frustration’s against Vincent’s admiration of him is amusing
sounds like Gauguin hasn’t found his “freedom” yet
Theo is one generous fellow
this arrangement lasts for only 2 months; given the apparent span of this musical, The Yellow House is a very “calm before the storm” song
wait a minute—
apparently, Vincent REALLY admired Gauguin and was so excited for his arrival at the yellow house
i fear the dramatization of their disagreements
“Don’t tell Theo I said that,” it amuses me how the van Gogh brothers’ relationship is so well-known to these painters
based on the gifs lurking, the ear incident WILL be dramatized and I am terrified for my heart on how it will be depicted
Sunlight and Storms quotes the original letter from Jo to Vincent surprisingly well (i attempted to read some—there’s so many! this was one of the first ones i came across)
this song hurts when it hits how little time Jo and Theo had together as a married couple
I am convinced a lot happened between Sunlight and Storms and On the Threshold of Eternity
this definitely was after a breakdown
i skip this song just so i don’t think about the obvious implications, i must confess
the meaning of “sunlight and storms” hits the hardest here
“we will not let your illness keep you from finding your freedom”
The Red Vinyard is so full of a brother’s love
this hits me, and i speak as an only child
“You’ve carried me more than you’ll ever know,” AH—
when Theo finally sees the new horizon, Vincent is seeing it too
and what Vincent saw he put on a fucking canvas
“i can see it—a new horizon” = “the sight of the starry night”
they say that at the time, not much was thought of the iconic painting
i could only wonder what might’ve happened between The Starry Night and Wheat Fields
all the piano motifs coming together in Wheat Fields/Finale Ultimo, just like that
“I’m ready for harvest time” is melodically similar to “The road is bright”, particularly when it’s just Vincent singing the line alone
despite the obvious, I don’t think I’ll grasp the meaning of the final song; i also skip this one so i don’t think about it
