Some proof that there ARE elected officials out there, like Vice Mayor Sean Cummings in Oklahoma, who are standing up for LGBTQ+ youth like Nex Benedict and calling out the fact that our words and rhetoric DO matter.
[Context: In this video, Sean Cummings is seen speaking to Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters referring to the death of student Nex Benedict].

I’m really really sick and tired of seeing children being brutally killed. The trans panic about “making bathrooms ‘safer’ for cis people” has just made going to the bathroom, existing in public, and existing at all incredibly dangerous for trans people and especially trans people of color
The world feels so relentlessly cruel right now and every day I wake up I bare witness to more and more innocent people being murdered, violently and without justice
Why do people only start caring once we have been killed?
Rest in Power Nex 💔 I wish you could have grown up and gotten to experience the community and support you deserved. We will never forget you.

What I've seen people fail to mention is that Nex, after regaining consciousness, went to the nurse’s office who then refused to call an ambulance. Their death is also due to the negligence of the school.

It's been almost a week since Nex's death.
Somehow humanity is still celebrating and justifying their death.
You don't get to claim to be for life when you celebrate the end of someone elses.
Why is the concept of appreciating human life turned into a joke? To be for life you have to appreciate the life of others no matter what. If you don't appreciate their life except yourself and claim to be for "life", then you are a hypocrite. Full stop.
There is no argument here.

Nex Benedict’s death must be a turning point in the fight for trans lives!
We stand in solidarity with Nex’s family and community, with Owasso students who walked out of their classes in protest on Feb. 26, and with those who have come out to vigils across the country to demand “Justice For Nex.”
We call on all workers — transgender and cisgender — to stand against these attacks. We must not turn away from the killing of Nex Benedict. This must be the moment when we stand together in opposition and resistance.

A poem I wrote in a moment of blind fury and utter heartbreak, Nex Benedict should still be alive.....
“Nex Benedict should still be alive,
Every youth deserves the chance to thrive,
Nex Benedict was bullied for defending their friends,
Bullies, who were mocking how they talk and laugh,
Why?
When will this callous cruelty end?
Bullies, in any sense, know no pretence,
Nex Benedict though and,
Any bullied non-binary student, any LGBTQIA+ youth, anyone I know,
Should be given the chance to grow!
It's absolutely sickening,
My pulse is quickening in rage,
That anyone is bullied, period,
For being themselves,
Just seems bewildering, strange!
It seems unfathomable to me,
Bullying people in regards to how they dress,
I'm not condoning Nex pushing the bully into a paper towel dispenser,
But I will say, they were under duress!
Nex Benedict should still be alive,
For,
Shouldn't all youth be allowed the chance to thrive?
Nex should still be cuddling their beloved cat, Zeus,
Every non binary youth should be able to live their own truth!
The fact that these bullies had previously targeted Nex and their friends?!
Surely something has got to give,
When will this madness end?
16 years, a life still so young,
Nex Benedict should still be alive,
They shouldn't have had to black out from punches swung!
Nex Benedict died, one day after the school attack,
Breathing shallow, eyes “kind of rolling back,”
Such travesty in this tragedy,
Of any non binary or transgender youth;
Any youth dying so young,
Dying at all,
Oh, how hearts have been wrung!
At yet another tragic loss,
Where's the accountability?
At what cost?
Nex had said “they didn't see the point of speaking to School Administration,”
For such bullying had happened before,
Where's the rumination?
Nex Benedict should still be alive….”

Seeing all major news channels say that Nex's death was ruled out as a suicide is so sickening to me. They were beaten, they got brain damage and ended up in the hospital. They were murdered. This was not some benadryl and pain killer suicide, this was MURDER. They were just a child, stop dismissing this... This is clearly not a suicide and I'm disgusted by everyone who is saying that it is rn

I was just making breakfast, and I overheard the words "Nex Benedicts death ruled a suicide" from the tv in my living room. That fucking broke me. I was stuck between not believing it, outrage over the fact that they were driven to do something like that because of the fight, and anger over the coverage of this - it seemed like the news channel I was watching was trying to remove the responsibility of Nex's death from the girls who assaulted them in that bathroom.
I've done some reading, this post is just to clear up whats happening for everyone that's as confused and hurt as I was. Even if their death was a suicide, which is still yet to be determined, it wouldn't matter. Those kids still drove them to it - the transphobes that have spread this shit around enough for it to affect Nex this way should still be held accountable.
The article that's screenshotted here contains snippets of communications Popular Information had with Nex's mother, and quotes from an interview with Lieutenant Nick Boatman - a spokesperson for Owasso police.
Tumblr media
Firstly, the cause of death HAS NOT BEEN officially determined yet,
Tumblr media
The Owasso police dept has only released this information ahead of time to make it seem like the cause of death has been ruled already to get people off their ass
Tumblr media
On this wiki article (and in the article I previously linked) it's made clear the medical examiner is still waiting for toxicology results, they haven't ruled out the fight as a contributing factor towards Nex's death. Nex's mother is going to hire an independent examiner because she's scared of their death being incorrectly determined in an effort to cover up or downplay the fact that their death WAS due to transphobic rhetoric, laws, and harassment.
Keep watching the Owasso police department, stay angry for Nex, make sure that their death doesn't just go away. Justice for Nex, protect trans youth, do your research.

By Coalition to Protect Trans Lives
Trans people can no longer accept the argument that we must support the “lesser evil” Democratic administration when, with its silence and inaction, it is facilitating the Republicans’ deadly attacks on trans lives.
We call on all workers — transgender and cisgender — to stand against these attacks. We must not turn away from the killing of Nex Benedict. This must be the moment when we stand together in opposition and resistance.

The more I think about Nex's murder, the more I reminisce on the death of Leelah Alcorn. It's tragic that so little has changed since her death. Leelah and Nex were two beautiful human beings who were utterly failed by society. I wish we could be better. When does this end?

The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the death of Nex Benedict, the 16 Choctaw 2STGNC (two spirit, transgender, and gender-nonconforming) student who died the day after a violent altercation in a school bathroom where they were beaten by a group of fellow students.
Given that this violence was likely fuelled by the intense climate of transphobic hate from Oklahoma state officials, and the attempts by the local school and police to minimize it, they cannot be trusted to conduct a fair and full investigation. Federal hate crimes legislation exists for precisely this reason- to allow the Feds to have jurisdiction to investigate crimes against marginalized (originally African American) people that state and local officials aren't willing to or are complicit in.
It cannot bring back Nex, but this is a necessary step toward truth and justice.
