#like i know haikyuu is the volleyball show but those children are not living for the sport the way the daiya kids do

the thing about daiya no ace that i personally love but makes it hard for me to recommend the show to people is that the characters literally have no lives outside of baseball. all their character development and dynamics are tied to baseball, there’s little to no filler or “slice of life” segments that aren’t related to the sport, no one has any hobbies outside of the sport except for maybe video games… it’s about baseball. it’s a show enamored with the Process and the Rituals of the sport and every game moves at a snails pace because that’s how baseball is and that’s what you’re here for if you want the show! you’re here for the love of the game! so if someone isn’t already a baseball fan i’m not sure they’ll find it compelling. but me… i am simply obsessed

haikyuu as dads!
find the mha version here - bnha as dads !
content: fluff, the boys with children. mentions pregnancy. aged up!
characters: bokuto, daichi, sugawara, lev, and kuroo.
a/n: i’ve been feeling very soft and even though i don’t even really like kids lol, this prompt make me so warm and happy :’) keep in mind that I’m not super far into haikyuu, so i don’t know a lot about the timeskip- sorry !! also a bit messy and unorganized.
so without further ado, here are some soft scenarios and headcanons for each :D
Tumblr media
bokuto !
Pleaseeee, we all know he’d be such a good dad!!
You’re tired? Don’t worry, he can watch them while you rest!
Can and WILL play with them for hours.
And of course, he has the energy to keep them preoccupied. This man has more energy than I ever will on 2 cups of coffee with 3 shots of espresso in each.
Mans probably would want a bigger family, but of course as long as you were fine with it.
Thinking maybe 3+. He just wants to have that big family to share with you :’) aww
When you’re pregnant, he’s all over you. Protective to the point of it being a little overwhelming, but he means well.
Pokes your belly a little. Not harshly, but in a loving, gentle way.
“That’s my baby. Right in there.”
Probably cries a little when your baby bump shows.
More so during your first pregnancy, but he still holds that same emotion with the others.
He does NOT know what to do the first time.
“THEY’RE CRYING, Y/N WHAT DO WE DO??”
When the kid/s start getting older, oh lord. He’s such a sucker for them.
Probably gives them ice cream or sneaks candy when you aren’t in the room, even though IT’S ALMOST TIME FOR BED.
I’m sorry, but he cannot and will not be able to help with homework. I’m sorry but it’s true.
If your kid/s have a passion, he’s 100% for it.
Dance? He’ll go to all of the recitals he can make. Volleyball? Even better. Writing? He’ll sit in front of them and have them read it out to him like it’s a bedtime story.
I don’t think he’d be a good cook, so whenever he takes over for dinner, everyone is like “Oh no. Dad’s cooking again.”
Overall, 100/10 dad. Supportive, and does his best. Good boyo <3
Tumblr media
daichi !
I think he’d be a good dad too :D
He was kind of just a natural father, so it’s expected.
I think that he originally wanted to bring up the topic of kids to you at some point, but he was hesitant since he didn’t know if you were ready.
So of course, you beat him to the conversation.
He’s very happy that you want to start a family too. :)
I think he’d want a smaller family, maybe 1-2 kids.
When you test positive, he’s kind of in shock for a moment.
“We’re going to have a kid-”
Like duh lmao he put it in you
Definitely calls Suga up to tell him the news.
Is actually very interested in shopping for a baby. He needs a few pointers but he’s got the enthusiasm, so A for effort bby
He’s decently used to having a small child running around him screaming, he had little siblings so yeah
Has a bit more structure than bokuto, but he’s still able to break.
He’d do damn near anything for his kid/s.
He has his moments where he wants to spend alone time with just you.
Decent homework helper, but I feel like he’d be that one parent who goes “This wasn’t how I was taught to do this”, or “Why did they change that??”
Again again, supportive dad.
But also supportive of you <3
Tumblr media
sugawara !
Being a teacher, he’s surrounded by kids all the time.
Basically, he is also used to having screaming children within his vicinity
I could never omg how do you do that Suga
At first he didn’t put much thought into a family, he and you were content just the two of you. Also. CHILDREN HE TEACHES.
But something just switches in his brain, probably after he had a really wholesome moment with a student, or maybe even just witnessing a parent + student interaction.
He’s like, “I kind of want that..”
Another small fam kinda guy <3
Suga brings it up, and you’re all for it, you’ve been wanting to start a family with him.
He’s so excited and happy!! oml :’)
Like, he finally gets to start a whole new chapter of your lives together he hadn’t really thought about until now.
When you get a baby bump, he plants soft kisses to your tummy and talks gently to it.
My heart ksjshd
This will be a nightly occurrence now.
He is reading all those articles for raising kids. He’s also at your beck and call, even the baby’s.
He just wants everything for the baby, they end up being a huge daddy’s kid.
Late nights after the kid/s go to bed is prime time for you both.
You enjoy being together after a long day, you snuggle up together in your bed, maybe drink some wine later.
PLEASE. Breakfasts in bed. He and the kid/s will TOTALLY MAKE YOU B in B.
So proud of your kid/s. Has pictures in frames on his desk at school, and when his students ask, he has plenty of stories to tell.
Knows when something is off. Like, he can just tell-
Kid is sad? He’s there. Tissues, ice cream, take them out somewhere.
Probably a teaser.
You already know he gets himself and that kid/those kids into mischief.
“Shhh, don’t tell mom!”
He has deep conversations with them. He cares a lot.
He just loves them <3
10/10
Tumblr media
kuroo !
it’ssss kuroo time babyyy
He definitely wanted kids. Strikes me as the guy who just knew, as soon as you got married.
When that test came up positive, he had a dorky smirk on his face.
He’s very proud to know you will have his kid.
This dude is always checking up on you. Morning sickness? He’s there to hold your hair back.
Feeling clingy or upset? Wraps his arms around you.
Lazy pats on your stomach when it’s late.
Why does he seem like he’d play mozart around you because he read somewhere that fetsuses liked that
Sir please we don’t need to listen to Alla Turca (Allegretto) for 12 hours straight
He’s 100000/10 homework helper. Mans is smart af, it’s not even surprising.
“I forgot how smart you were”
“Shut up”
You both are probably so mushy with each other that your kid/s are like “Ew gross”
He encourages and pushes them to do their best.
Helps them find what they’re passionate about. <3
Dad jokes. I’m serious.
“Please stop, dad!”
“One more, one more-”
Enjoys making them suffer with terrible jokes.
In a nice way of course.
Tumblr media
lev !
saved the funny one for last!
Okay maybe not super funny, but I had fun writing this
He and you did NOT plan to get pregnant. At ALL.
“Lev the test is positive”
“Wh-WHAT?”
Promptly falls off of chair.
Like this dude was not ready for that information
Tbh he would make even me anxious about it
“..do I have to give them the talk?”
Lev please it hurts me
As soon as he gets used to it though, he’s excited like he usually is.
But this is different. This is a whole HUMAN.
“Do you think I’ll be a good dad, Y/N?”
“Do you want me to be honest?”
Jkjk that was a joke.
I think Lev has the potential to be a good dad. He’s energetic, passionate and dumb, but in a good way <3
Sorry again, no homework help with him LMAO
Your kid will probably be tall. Or at least average height.
After the original surprise pregnancy, he wants to try again but when you both are actually ready.
He would totally take these kids out everywhere. A show off dad for sure
“Hey, did you know my kid did xyz?”
“Look, here’s a picture!”
Lev we get it you love your kids
He would love to have a volleyball loving kid I feel like, but he wouldn’t be too disappointed if they didn’t like it. Would probably propose other sports though, he always loved playing himself, even if it was only volleyball so he wants them to have the same good experiences
If he’s watching the kids while you’re shopping, he doesn’t really know how the first few times- even though you left him A LIST.
Probably then calls his friends up for advice
If it comes down to it...consults WikiHow
and that’s it!! hope you enjoyed, some were harder to write but yk what- i had fun :D as much as i am suga brainrot i literally had a hard time writing his section :’(
but anyways yuh B)
asks/requests are open ! check yay’s and nay’s in basics for this blog !

(More) Haikyuu boys as dads
Characters: Sawamura Daichi, Bokuto Koutarou, Miya Astumu, Miya Osamu
(Ushijima ver.) | (Yaku ver.) | (Kita ver.)
Sawamura Daichi
wdym “dad”, do you not see his dozen of children?
he has been training for fatherhood since high school, he is ready
the standard good dad
comes home after work each day and gives each of his kids a big hug when they come to greet him by the door
does that thing where he lifts them up and let them sit on his arm, it’s really cute
strict when he needs to be
always manages to let the kids know what they have done wrong and why it is wrong in a way that doesn’t make them feel like they got yelled for nothing
Karasuno trained you well, Daichi
insists on taking the kids for outings every weekend when he doesn’t have patrol because “it is important to make sure the kids get enough fresh air”
his underclassmen is very hyped when they know you are expecting but he refuses to let them visit the first year the kid was born
“I have a strong feeling that they are not going to be a very good influence...”
however, the nursery is decorated with all the weird shit noya excitedly sent from literally everywhere in the world when he caught the news
so maybe they are already influenced
signs those parent-children events at the kid’s sports festival every year
very helpful with setting things up so he is very popular with the other parents
when his kids get a little older, he finds a lot of joy in playing up the “dad who embarrasses his kids” stereotype
always reminding his kids to eat, being picky is not allowed in the Sawamura household
not very good at comforting his kids emotionally, but gives solid good advice
the kids respect their father very much
Bokutou Koutarou
oh boy
no one is more excited about the arrival of the baby than he is
baby clothes shopping, picking the wallpaper for the nursery, building the crib, he is there with you all the way
wants to be a part of every step of their lives, even though it is hard because he is always away
video calls 24/7
(sometimes, you think he misses the kid more than they miss their dad)
always, always reminding himself to be gentle with the child
“Kou, why are you holding them like that?”
“What if I hurt them by squeezing them too tight...”
his child practically grows up watching his dad’s matches
somehow, even when they are throwing a fit, they always stop crying if you put on one of Bokuto’s matches
he is looking like uwu the whole day after you told him about it
“Hey hey hey! It seems like you’re going to grow up to be a great ace too, yeah?”
Child: *giggles*
“Ohhhhhh!!!!”
expert at making kids laugh
owl-themed everything
has a family pic as his lockscreen
shows everyone the kid’s photos
the entire msby team, every worker at the clubhouse, every passerby, every one of his followers on any social media, his entire family, every single one of his old school mates, and everyone’s dog knew when the kid calls him “papa” the first time
he is bit of a big child of his own
you caught him napping with the kid laying on his chest once and the resemblence is uncanny
(you snapped many many pictures of that moment and you take a look at them whenever parenting gets too tiring)
Miya Atsumu
you know
apparently it’s more likely for someone who is a twin to have twins
now, imagine Atsumu walking around with two mini Tsumus
Atsumu is very conflicted about the fact that the kids look so much like him
“It would be cuter if they look more like you though...”
“Miya Atsumu you must be kidding me.”
tries to hide his accent when the kids are just learning how to talk so they won’t be so confused but fails after the third day
as a result, they all got their dad’s thick accent
he had never been more grateful for his own parents because if his kids are like him then he must be such a pain to raise
gets super cocky when he knows that the boys watches his matches
“I’m only watching for uncle shoyo.”
“I like kageyama more."
...
"Tsumu are you ok.”
“No... just... let me calm down for a second...”
(but you know, you know that the kids secretly watch all of the existing video recordings of his plays)
(you feel like it’s better to not let him know until the kids got older though)
(just so he won’t ruin the respect they have for him)
dumb uncle Samu
“Dad, uncle samu said you still wet your bed until you were six is that true?”
“H U H-?????”
he decided that he’ll be supportive no matter what his children wants to do but he nearly cried tears of joy when they said they want to learn how to play volleyball
when the boys got older, they tried to have a Miya twins vs Miya twins match and it was absolute chaos
Miya Osamu
very glad that he doesn’t have twins
he thinks to himself, while looking at his twin getting bullied by his own kids
buys literally every single baby food recipe in the market
taste test everything himself before feeding it to his kid
is torn between keeping the kid out of the kitchen for safety and letting them watch so they can learn to cook soon
Onigiri Miya started serving kids menu after he became a dad
you are convinced that the new menu is so that he will have a valid excuse to keep trying out meals that his own kid will like
“Do you think we should come out with Onigiri Miya kids wear?”
“Samu, you run a restaurant.”
your child is not picky at all
Miya Osamu has one pride and that pride is that no food will taste bad if he is the one who cooked it
his kid always has the nicest bento out of everyone in their class
doesn’t get angry often but is very strict about not wasting food
the child made him breakfast for father’s day and he emitted an aura of sheer happiness the rest of the day
dumb uncle Tsumu
“Dad, uncle tsumu said you used to get sick all the time because you will eat everything and anything is that true?”
“H U H-?????”
the miya cousins are best friends
the dads, however, gets competitive with each other over the most trivial things
“My sons can spike better than you now.”
“Oh yeah? Can they cook as good as mine?”
“What are you saying?”
“Dad-”
“Dad please-”
“You are being embarrassing...”

The sky is the limit
Iwaizumi x reader
Tumblr media
Summary: In which iwaizumi and Oikawa’s kid sister have a hate relationship because of an incident that happened when they were children. That grudge has been carried to highschool along with pent-up anger and lust. Will Hajime finally see Y/n as a woman or will she continue to be just his best friend's annoying little sister.
Chapter two: Spilled Milk
Tumblr media
After school Y/n did something she had never done before she walked to practice with Kageyama instead of running to her older brother's classroom so they wouldn’t leave her. Little did she know even though the boys complained that she took so long they would never actually leave without her, so when she didn’t show after ten minutes it worried them. It freaked them out, even more, when she was already sat in the bleachers watching the rest of the team practice. When it was time to leave she quickly said her goodbyes to the black sheep of the team before heading off to join the two boys.
“ So that’s where you disappeared to at lunch? You’re so busy now that you can’t even come to pick up your brother from class.” Oikawa whined as they began their walk home, as always Iwaizumi was coming over. Tooru was upset seeing his sister was growing up right before his eyes. When did she start hanging out with boys, or even get friends? She felt bad knowing that her brother was upset but she couldn’t tell him that she had to be her own person so his best friend would stop seeing her as a child.
Y/n clung onto her brother's arm giving him a wide smile before laughing at how dramatic he was being. If he wasn’t pursuing volleyball she would have told him to join the acting club instead. “ Tooru you know you’ll always be my oni-chan and important in my life even if I have a boyfriend.” The last part was to tease him for calling her flat-chested earlier, she skipped ahead of the two boys letting them talk amongst themselves.
Iwaizumi flinched at the word boyfriend, he didn’t exactly know why maybe it was because he was so protective of her. “ I don’t want my sister with Tobio Chan! She’s too pretty for him, she’s an Oikawa after all.” Tooru dramatically put a hand on his head.
“ She is too pretty for him,” Iwa mumbled which caught his best friend's attention, which he was already regretting because he’d never be able to live down saying something as soft as that. “Then you date her instead so Tobio can’t have her hmph” he whispered as he pouted thinking that would be a solution to his problems.
This was the first time it came across Iwaizumi’s mind about dating y/n probably ever, he never looked at her in a way where it was romantic. That would be weird, wouldn’t it? “ Dude, do you hear yourself? I’m never going to date Y/n that’s gross!” He had forgotten that they were whispering, it’s just the question caught him so off guard that he said it loudly. Oikawa and he looked at each other ready to conceal the girl walking in front of thinking she’d turn around with an offended or hurt the face. Y/n kept walking straight forward si they assumed she didn’t hear and was stuck in her own world. Unfortunately for them, she had heard, he was starting to confuse her was she pretty or ew. Could he not admit that around her brother or something? She thought how he probably didn’t think Mina was too gross to date
Tumblr media
“ You're here again.” She was snapped out of her thoughts by Kageyama shutting the roof door behind him as he took a seat against the wall next to her. After yesterday’s words, she was avoiding Iwaizumi all together that meant her brother too when they were at school since those two stuck together like glue for the most part. She had thought about going to sit at the table pretending like everything was alright but those girls were sat there applying their make-up. There was no room for her, there probably never was. Lately, she had been thinking about how she felt like a nuisance that lived in her brother's shadow.
“ Am I not allowed to? If you want me to leave I can.” Just because she was miserable and desperate doesn’t mean she was going to annoy him too with her unneeded presence. He quickly shook his head no before gathering his words, “ No you can stay, I just thought you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.” The young male looked pitiful at the moment, it reminded her of herself.
“ Of course I would! We’re friends now after all.” She beamed as she grabbed his hand in happiness, she finally had a friend of her own. Someone she didn’t have to share, someone who didn’t know her as Oikawa’s little sister. From that day on the girl began to spend her lunch with Kageyama as if it was a ritual. Two people that didn’t belong anywhere but with each other, what more could a lonely person ask for.
“ She’s not here again.” Iwaizumi tapped his fingers against the lunch table as he stared at the cafeteria doors waiting for them to bust open. Luna the girl that clung to Oikawa the most was the first to perk up, loving anything that had to do with drama perked up hearing the male sound worried. She wasn’t a bad person per se but if you got in her way she could be crueler than hellfire. “ Aww, are you worried about y/n Chan not coming to sit with you anymore?” She knew who the younger girl was because her brother had mentioned her a couple of times. She also knew of the little crush she had because Oikawa talked too much when you put a pretty girl in front of him.
As if the heavens above heard the prayers Y/n enter the cafeteria, not heading to the table but to the vending machine. She had lost the game of rock, paper, scissors and now was forced to go retrieve some milk for Kageyama. “ Look she came, oh Y/n could you come here Iwa misses you.” Life had become boring so the older girl needed a breath of fresh air. Mina her best friend wanted to speak up thinking this wasn’t a good idea.
How could she ignore that loud girl calling her name in a sing-song voice especially when half of the cafeteria had turned to look in her direction? Y/n clutched the milk in her hand as she walked over to the table. This older girl was definitely trying to target her to make life harder. She glanced over at her brother who shrugged his shoulders not really understanding what was happening while Iwaizumi blushed slightly not being able to lock eyes. “ It’s so good to finally meet you, the boys talk a lot about you. You’re so pretty, you think she’s pretty right Iwaizumi? Such a pretty color of hair.” Luna reached up and twirled her finger around a piece of hair. For anyone who didn’t know the language of a mean girl who used compliments to embarrass said victim.
Y/n smacked away the girls had with a glare causing Luna to pout as she held her hand. It was almost for a second she wore a smirk. “ Ouch....such a mean girl, I now understand why you like Iwaizumi so much since he too is a brute-“ the older girl was cut off as milk splashed on her hair falling down her artificial golden locks. The girl she had just been passive-aggressively bullying had poured a carton of milk on her head. “ You talk too much,” Y/n said dropping the empty carton in front of her.
“ You little bitch!” Luna screeched as she stood up raising her hand to smack her assailant. She was stopped by two hands belonging to two entirely different people. The one that held her wrist was Iwaizumi and the hand below belongs to Kageyama. It was intense as they stared at each other, both of them wanting to be the hero. In this situation do you get off of the path you’ve been trailing for forever to go on a new more promising way or stay on the one that keeps bringing you in circles.
At this moment y/n had chosen to take the path of unknowing, “ Come on Kags.” She muttered under her breath lightly pulling him away from the scene of Luna thrashing around while iwaizumi and Oikawa tried to calm her down. This world was one that she didn’t belong in.
Tumblr media
A/n: sorry for the long wait for such a short chapter! Next chapter will be more fast paced but still explain everyone complexed relationships. My inbox is open if you guys wanna talk or submit. I’m really interested in doing headcannons. ( I will do any haikyuu characters so don’t hesitate.)

author’s note. my secret santa fic for you @avantaes for the happy holidays exchange of alice's server <3 sorry if i slip up on the pronouns, i'm trying out writing a gn!reader eheh thank you to @haikyuu-is-for-lovers for beta-ing this fic ily this is a part of the haikyuu holidays collab which you can check here!
Tumblr media
“have a merry christmas!” you say, waving at the girl who looks at you with bright, sparkling eyes that makes your heart warm. her parents, sliding money onto the counter and giving you two heartwarming smiles, stepped away from the store before you could decline and give it back to the family. clasping your hands for a moment, you squeal and shake your co-worker’s shoulders,  resulting in you messing up his bright red cap, showing off your two thousand yen, and doing the thing where you swipe the money off your palm.
“look, look! I’ve got tips, ‘samu!” you exclaim, your voice getting a pitch higher because you can’t contain your excitement from doing well on being a cashier today. it drains your energy from repeatedly talking and keeping up a persona in front of other people to live up to the reputation of the toy store. the jar on your counter filled with crumpled money and coins makes you confident and you excitedly bounce on the wooden chair. he provides you a thumbs up along with a soft smile on his exhausted face before the ringing bell and chatter of people startles you both in your places.
another christmas rush, you both ponder.
you prepare yourself by cracking your fingers and stretching for a minute since you’re experienced in the working field– demanding customers, stubborn and loud children, and oldies who whisper and say they know everything about working. both of you have gone through that and it seems fate throws another batch of those people. turning your head and seeing him staring back at you with determination bubbling on his eyes cracks a smile on your dull face.
“osamu, let’s ditch work and celebrate together.” you say, voice lowered to a whisper as you jutted out your bottom lip while waiting for the customers since they take their time picking out plushies or christmas cards. osamu chuckles, his hand playfully punching your arm and murmuring under his breath how you’re confusing which made you step on his white shoes. the look of horror forming on his face is more than enough to leave you satisfied with your revenge, which was childish to begin with. you whisper three, two, one before hearing the bells, indicating that customers are coming in. you mentally prepare yourself for another continuous rush.
-
"spare us ten minutes?" the voice asks, making you startled on your chair and a small smile appear on your face to assist the last customer for the night. there are still people in the mall, but the store got quiet after the rush earlier, so this was expected. but the person got you dumbfounded. locking eyes with the man had you unconsciously gulping because you’d heard of him from your co-worker.
"suna rintarou..?" muttering to yourself and giving him a subtle nod, your tired eyes move to the glass door and a sigh leaves your chapped lips - seeing no one handling the fans is arduous. arching your back for a moment to stretch and feeling your bones crack brings contentment because standing and moving around for eight hours isn’t a pleasant experience. because of the beige bucket hat he’s wearing, you can’t see his expression clearly, but his lips are pressed together and there’s no brightness forming in his eyes.
the hell? he should be excited about the christmas season!
“taro-nii, let’s go!” a gentle yet loud voice breaks your stretching and you instantly see the resemblance of the volleyball player to his sister, who looks adorable in her olive green sweater and the hair clips resting on her hair, making her stylish at a young age. hearing “wish me luck!” produces chuckles from you because of his monotone voice in contrast to his sister’s. and because you know he’ll be dragged around in the store, your exhausted eyes meet his, a mix of gray and yellow which is beautiful, you muse to yourself.
as the siblings disappeared on the aisle, you instantly nudge osamu’s waist with your elbow and lean forward to remove his cap since he angles it in a way his eyes are covered.
“‘samu! he’s hot.” cupping your cheeks before shrieking and shaking your head in disbelief, you bite on your lip to prevent squealing because you two made eye contact earlier, chuckling at the way it’s obvious he didn’t want to be here. the fact that he’s wearing a bucket hat made your palms clammy, picturing him in your mind while swooning over him for the next couple of hours.
“you do remember that he attended inarizaki, right?” your eyes widen like the dangling christmas balls hanging on the ceiling— leaving your mouth open and desperately trying to recall your high school, which is evident due to the furrow of your eyebrows and the continuous bouncing your left leg.
“wait.. you’re kidding right? i’m sure i would’ve seen him somewhere!”
with your voice turning to a low whisper, you scoot your chair closer to osamu’s because there’s a possibility the other volleyball player could hear you— and you don’t want that to happen.
in your mind, you’re weighing the pros and cons: he’s in the toy aisle and probably helping his sister to pick toys, there’s upbeat christmas songs playing in the store, and add the indistinct yet loud chatter of people in the mall... it's possible that he wouldn't hear you, but you won't take risk— not for now.
“you could, but you didn’t.” throwing a harsh glare in his direction, but reconciling by giving a peace sign after, you recognize that osamu’s words are the truth, but the underlying tone of cockiness didn’t go unnoticed. by nature, you are observant, after all. even if your co-worker denies he’s similar to the nosy blonde that is his brother, but there are some things you couldn’t help but notice, they both love teasing, only osamu is lowkey about it.
“you’re a literary type of girl, so it makes sense you didn’t watch our game... don’t even say i didn’t invite you.”
“studying is important, you idiot!” crossing your arms and rolling the stack of papers laying on the counter before slamming it on his head with little force, you pout in distress, only because if you’d attended the games, you could’ve seen suna around the high school, or admired him while he’d practice and get lost in his voice whenever he’d speak.
“why are we even talking about me! we should talk about your cru—“
“excuse me but..” a familiar voice interrupted your playful banter and you had to clutch your stomach because of who’s laid in front of your eyes. the glint forming in your eyes makes suna annoyed and let out a tsk, but he didn’t move because his sister was currently fawning over the toys that she’d add to her new collection.
“osamu, don’t just stand there.” you nudge your co-worker to help his friend, but instead he leaned over the counter and whispered something to suna, and the sly smirks forming on their faces makes your toes curl on your shoes in nervousness and the countless worries are starting to overlap in your head.
you couldn’t help it, you’re a natural overthinker.
“alright! suna, you’re in good hands.” osamu’s hand gives your shoulder a soft squeeze before he disappears through the backdoor. you watch, tapping your fingers on your thighs to the beat of the cheerful christmas song playing right now.
“taro-nii, give it already!” his sister’s voice made you hold back a laugh by lowering your head, and you went to help him scoot over the toys and candies onto the counter. there are plushies on his hand, biscuits squished by his elbow and a reindeer headband he’s wearing which isn’t that neat— you assume his sister put it on and kept being persistent. plus, his soft brown hair looks all over the place.
“look, look! this is cute, right?” his energetic sister beams at you, her small hands holding the fox plushie with a proud smile on her face. you leaned more onto the counter to pat her head, her giggles due to your head pat making you giddy inside. she’s courteous and well behaved; her natural bright energy gives off a great aura.
“yes! it’s so adorable like you!” patting her head once more and gently grabbing the toy from her, the literal sparkles present in her eyes make you snicker and scan the tags of the items quickly, giving the fox plushie back to her hands, which are welcoming the toy warmly.
“no! this is taro-nii.” after finishing the scan, you put the items on the two pastel red and green paper bags and your ears perk up. giggling at her enthusiasm towards her brother, your eyes focused on him, faint red visible around his neck as it extended to the tip of his ears.
“how much do you love him?” you whisper, side eyeing the latter while he stands still, holding the two bags without looking in your direction. you and his sister giggle while she squeals at your question.
“this much!” she states, putting her hands to the side and expanding the love she has for her beloved brother— who’s standing, flustered, but somehow still keeping an eye your fingers tapping mindlessly on the counter. he ruffled her hair and poked her cheek to annoy her, only now a distress pout is forming on her lips and she huffs her pink dusted cheeks.
“let’s go, we’ll come back soon.”
hopping on the counter and helping suna hold the bags while he fixes his sister’s adorable pigtails, the next song blasting on the speakers makes her jump around and slur the lyrics while her hands are wrapped around the plushie as if she’s never letting go. he gave a subtle nod and his eyes went to his arms, catching up on his clues and giving a big wave to the siblings. if you only noticed the faint red tint adorning his cheeks as he ran a hand through his hair because of him doing something discreet without anyone noticing, or you.
this is indeed a memory you can’t forget on christmas.
-
“he’s so slow, is he a turtle?” you say, murmuring under your breath as you snuggle your head on your pale blue scarf wrapped around your neck comfortably. balling your fists in your coat pocket to not shudder at the cold breeze passing by, regret flooded your mind because you only wore your off white shirt and the coat protecting you from the snow falling from above. you tap your white sneakers against the snow-covered ground as you impatiently wait for suna, who texted you he’d be ahead of you earlier that day.
“hey, christmas cashier.” seeing him beside you wearing casual clothes got your cheeks to heat up and made you playfully punch his shoulder. tiptoeing a little to adjust the scarf around his neck and pat the snow off his dark gray coat, neither of you said anything. you can’t say anything; the close proximity and being under his sharp gaze makes you nervously uneasy.
“hi to the most discreet and late man i know.” the smirk forming on his face indicates he’s not offended by your statement. by discreet you’re referring to the small paper with his number written on it that he slid smoothly onto the counter while you were busy with his sister. hours later you figured out it was the reason why osamu and him were smirking. his text particularly said “let’s be early and be spontaneous, show me how christmas is to you”. ruffling his hair to purposely annoy him, you tug his hand to skip along the grounds and finally begin the journey of doing christmas activities, showing him how he should appreciate the holiday through your perspective.
since you accidentally ponder out loud, "how many reasons must i provide for you to enjoy winter season with me?" and he shrugs instantly, looking from far away, his eyes longing for something as he softly whispers... "two or three would be enough."
-
"why the hell are we here?" he narrows his gray-yellow eyes at you while you're busy cupping your cheeks due to the cold temperature at the mall. walking a little further to the back, but enough that you'd see what's happening to the center of the place, people who are in the front (whether they like it or not, they've got no choice) get to sit in santa's lap and get to take pictures with santa claus.
"hey! let me explain. in christmas season, mr. suna rintaro, enjoy the free entertainments!" crossing your arms and pointing a finger in his direction before you adjust his scarf and pat his hair, ruffling it to cover his eyes because he's a volleyball figure, you and him watch this with a company can ensue chaos.
"yeah? like sitting on santa's lap?" he stepped a little closer to you because of people passing by - he didn't want injuries to happen. hearing your chuckles has his hands clammy and him shaking his head to compose himself internally.
"don't worry! we're just gonna watch them and bully them— a secret between us only." a giddy smile is visibly present on your face as you hold onto your scarf to cover your smile that can't seem to stop.
"oh my god.. look at that!" slapping a hand over your mouth and shutting your eyes because you had to physically stop yourself from laughing or people will hear you and think you're hysterical. he follows your gaze and he can't help but let out a snicker. he has to tell osamu about this.
there's someone sitting on santa's lap, much to his dismay because he's whining and moving a lot— like a child that doesn't receive candy from the doctors. the faux blonde seems at your age, his pissed off expression is somehow wholesome which makes the group of people here break into fits of laughter.
"that guy, he's a kid at heart." you murmur under your breath and grin at suna as he locks eyes with you and nods at your statement. he didn't talk much after that, just chuckling with you and angling his phone to record the blonde earlier, which had you squealing at it because free entertainments are rare. though one thing you failed to notice was how his black phone captured you tiptoeing to get more of a view in the enormous crowd, a hand on your waist and the brightness of your mesmerizing eyes beating the sparkling christmas ornaments.
you weren't an entertainment, because in his head it seems wrong, and it is. more of, you were just someone beautiful that suna rintaro could stare at for hours and never get bored of— because you are someone who's interesting, and he can't wait to discover the other layers you have.
-
“on christmas, use your charm and coupons to get discounts.” skipping around the streets to see different foods which makes you hungry and act distressed by whining so he’ll go with you to the food stalls. he scoffs at your statement and follows behind you, genuinely curious on what you’ll do because he isn’t the type to use coupons to buy food. he gives the cash and is good to go to savor the food alone.
“one order of oden, please!” you say, waving to the old man behind the oden stall with a bright smile. the former nodded, saying a “comin’ right up!” as you tug suna closer to the stall to inhale the heavenly scent of oden— the dashi soy sauce broth is making you lick your lips in anticipation, and the fish cakes and the deep fried tofu added excitement in your stomach.
“thanks! i’m so hungry.” with a chuckle slipping past your lips, you bow down before stepping to the snow-covered bench across from you. the cold feeling of the snow makes you hiss as you try to make yourself comfortable.
“suna? taste it! perfect food for this hell of a winter.” holding the bowl with delicacy before he accepts it with a small smile adorning his face, he brings down his scarf before taking a big sip of the broth and a bite of the hard boiled egg. a low rumble comes from his chest which you assume is because of the hot broth soothing the cold feeling.
“where’s the charm and discount there?” turning his body towards you and looking at you with soft eyes as he watches you take a bite of the tofu, a smile passing through your lips because it is newly fried while you huff your smooth, pink cheeks.
“the charm is just.. interacting with people, you know? giving them smiles because god knows what they go through with customers.” he can’t help but chortle at your statement, but still nods after a minute, agreeing with you. his right hand plays with the black button of his coat, needing something to distract himself.
“he only let me pay in half for the oden. it’s generous, yeah? he always gives me food when i go home years ago, you know, the shitty college phase.” giving the bowl to him once again as he listens attentively, his gaze goes to the oden stall- maybe he can visit once in a while and ask questions about you, or he can tag his sister along. tapping his black boots on the ground in habit while stretching his other leg straight, he hears your breath hitch and it makes him snicker inwardly, probably because of how long his leg is or because you’re amazed by the hot stew. either way, it’s charming.
“mhm, yeah, and i bet you insisted at first.” he feigns innocence as he takes in your offended expression. eyes wide like marble saucers, you purse your lips and cover the bowl with your ice-cold hands, acting like you don’t want to share the food with him anymore.
“w-well, of course! but you know old people.” you sigh, grabbing the chopsticks and taking a bite of the fish cake while shutting your eyes for a moment to momentarily forget the flaring heat forming on your cheeks and down to your neck. he looks ahead as he attempts to scramble his thoughts, but there's something over his lips and it's the deep fried tofu. you push it further with a smile on your face as he begrudgingly takes it as a whole.
"and yeah! this sums it up, that during christmas you should enjoy the simple things." taking a last sip of the heavenly soy sauce broth before you nudge him for him to take the last gulp. he went along with you, after all; he deserves the last sip of the stew. you grab the bowl from him and stroll back to the trash can nearby the stall—oh, if you only noticed his eyes following your every move with a gentle smile forming on his face.
his thoughts begin to clear out and only come to a conclusion—you're pretty and simple, and he should appreciate it more.

I need to nerd out about Haikyuu right now (Season 1 Episode 1) (manga spoilers)
I have nobody that I can nerd out about Haikyuu with so I’ll do it here.
My first introduction to volleyball was through Haikyuu and watching reactors from coaches and players on YouTube really expanded my understanding of this manga/anime. Now that I’ve finished the manga and watched all available episodes (more than once) I want to see why I find this shounen sports anime so bloody compelling.
A good beginning sets up the middle and end. The opening scene of Haikyuu is the famous “a tall, tall wall looms before me…”. Before the rewatch, I had it in my head that the scene after the opening (Hinata seeing the Little Giant on TV) was the first scene. So, no, Furudate-sensei actually started this chapter at the end – Hinata is already in the Karasuno gym, he’s already scared of the block, and he’s lining up with the shoes of five of his teammates. This is a common framing technique – sets up the question of “how did we get here?”.
On my first watch of Haikyuu, I didn’t know anything about volleyball. I have, however, watched a fair amount of anime, including shounen. I think my inexperience actually helped me understand why Hinata was so awestruck by the Little Giant when he saw him on TV.
I knew the premise of the anime – tiny Shoyo wants to play a sport made for tall people – but rewatching it actually confused me. This scene is set 3-4 years before even making it to Karasuno, so Shoyo is, what, 11? He doesn’t know how tall he’s going to be, so why was he fixated on this “small” player going up against the bigger blockers? I mean, he could still be small for his age and be self-conscious about it, I guess, but not like he would be at 15. Then I thought – maybe it’s because the Little Giant jumped so high?
Shoyo is small, yes, but he can jump high. This is a defining aspect of his character. This was also the moment Shoyo became interested in volleyball, from what I can tell. So, if he’s as inexperienced as me, he wouldn’t be able to see the technique that the Little Giant used to defeat the big blockers. In his little kid head, maybe he assumed that the Little Giant beat the blockers because he jumped so high. So, perhaps little Shoyo thought: hey, I can jump high → I’ll be good at volleyball.
Themes
What are the overarching themes of Haikyuu shown in this episode?
Friendship. This is a Shounen anime, after all. Hinata makes friends wherever he goes, but it’s not until the match in this episode (and later Karasuno) that he finds a place that he belongs. Hinata has a wide variety of friends and is lovable enough to both get Izumi and Koji to join his team and make them emotional about the game.
Kageyama takes a liking to him from this match (although whether Mr Grumpy himself even recognises this is up to interpretation). From the moment they snap at each other in the hallway outside the gym bathroom to that beautiful jump that scores the first genuine point for Hinata’s team, Kageyama is intrigued by the bouncing ball of sunshine. After the match is finished, Kageyama snaps at Hinata “what were you doing for the last three years?”. He’s the first person to see Hinata’s potential, although Hinata takes it as an insult. It’s okay – they just don’t know each other yet.
Rivalry. Kageyama vs Hinata. Later (ep 6 minor spoilers??): Karasuno (Hinata and Kageyama) versus Aoba Johsai (Kunimi and Kindaichi). Shoyo sees Kageyama as the biggest barrier to his dream of playing volleyball. He wants to defeat him with all his being: if he can defeat the strong player, then he will be the strong player.
Victory and defeat. Duh. It’s a sports anime. One team plays another in a game where only one can win. Hinata is sure he is capable – he’s over-confident and inexperienced. He doesn’t know what good volleyball looks like, let alone how to implement it. But he’s also a show-off – a facet of his personality I didn’t really grasp until season 4. He wants the recognition the Little Giant got. He wants a stadium of people to go “wow, did you see him jump? Did you see how he beat the three-man block? Oh my god, he’s so amazing”. I’m sure the cool nickname – the Little Giant – caught his attention as well. So if he tries hard and jumps high enough, he’ll win, right?
Yeah. Poor baby learns a very harsh lesson. This defeat is crushing. He jumped high, like the Little Giant, but he couldn’t defeat the block. Those looming hands haunt him – “a tall, tall wall looms before me…”. This is a barrier he can’t overcome and he doesn’t know *why...*You can see it on his face after the block – ‘huh? I copied the Little Giant’. This sets up the goal of the first season: Hinata needs to learn how to see what’s at the top, the other side of that tall wall. He needs to hit rock-bottom before he can start climbing up.
Kageyama’s team won because it was a better team. Kitagawa Daichi is a powerhouse on the Miyagi junior high volleyball scene. I don’t know if it’s a private school, but it’s a feeder school for Aoba Johsai, which is a private school. Both seem to have a specialism in volleyball training. Maybe if Hinata went to Kitagawa Daichi, [Manga spoilers] if he’d been introduced to volleyball as early as Kageyama was, maybe he’d already be a monster. Or maybe his natural instincts would have been trained out of him. It’s important to the story that Hinata starts off as an untrained underdog, deprived of good volleyball and hungry for victory.
Team versus the individual. Kitagawa Daichi was the favourite to win the whole tournament. It’s a powerhouse team with more players than can fit on the bench. They’re tall, they’re scary, they’re elite. The team members often go on to Aoba Johsai, a high school powerhouse. Hinata’s school didn’t even have a team until he came along. They’re small (exactly 6 players, no reserves, no libero). His teammates don’t even know the rules for the game. Hinata had to fight tooth and nail to get on the court. However, he’s encouraging to his team members and dedicated. He’s glowing at just being there. He wants to win, of course, but most of all he wants to play volleyball.
Volleyball is a team sport. “The team that wins is the one with the strongest six players”. However, at times, it seems like both Hinata and Kageyama are the only ones really playing on their teams. Kageyama is giving it his all, yelling at his team for not keeping up with him and slacking off. Hinata is the only one on his team who wants to be there, the only one who wants to play. He’s hitting the most spikes, jumping the highest, playing the best (not that that’s saying much). This match, in a large way, is Kageyama versus Hinata.
Talent. Kageyama is a genius setter. (Manga spoilers:) He was raised in a family of volleyball players (one of which is an alumnus of Shiratorizawa for christ’s sake). He’s enamoured with the sport – obsessed with it. He lives and breathes volleyball. (Manga spoilers:) he keeps a volleyball journal where he records and analyses every play, practice and game he’s ever made. He’s tall and strong and athletic. He goes to a school with a good volleyball training programme. He’s built for this game.
Hinata is (superhumanly) athletic. He can run fast and jump high. But he’s short and untrained. His talent is raw and unrefined. But it’s still enough to catch Kageyama’s attention.
Characters
Furudate-sensei is a fan of the Meaningful Name™ convention. This is actually fairly common in Japanese culture anyway: traditionally baby names are carefully chosen to reflect the parents’ aspirations for the children. (I also don't speak Japanese so I'm going off other people's translations for the kanji).
HINATA SHOYO (日向 翔陽) - “sun place” “soaring sunlight”. He’s a bouncing ball of sunshine who makes friends wherever he goes and jumps really high. He’s a shounen protagonist to his core: boundless enthusiasm, determination, friendship, the underdog. He’s also a magnetic hero.
This episode needs to cement the key aspects of Shoyo’s personality. He’s outgoing and “magnetic” – he makes friends with people from all walks of life. He is an underdog. Everyone loves an underdog, right? Effort and passion should be rewarded. The good guys should win. This episode really sets up how hard little Shoyo had to fight to be on the court and how he’s willing to fight to stay on it. The flashback occurring the moment he walks into the gym for his first tournament demonstrates this nicely: his junior high school didn’t have a team or a real club, none of his friends was interested in volleyball (although they were athletes of various persuasions) and he spent most of his time practising by himself against the wall or begging his friends to set the ball for him.
It’s okay, though: he has the magnetism of a true Shounen protagonist and not only manages to talk his friends into occasionally throwing the ball to him but also drags them to a tournament of a sport they’ve never played and don’t really understand. He’s also managed to talk some first-years into joining the team. Shoyo is very magnetic and I wonder how much he’s aware of it at this point. He’s not exactly reflective or a deep thinker.
He’s enthusiastic and determined. He will play volleyball to his full capabilities until the match point. When his teammate worries about getting hurt after watching him run into a wall, his response is “I don’t understand [why you want to slow down]. We haven’t lost yet”. It ain’t over until it’s over.
KAGEYAMA TOBIO (影山 飛雄) - “Shadow Mountain” “Flying Hero”. What are his main traits? He’s volleyball mad, he’s ambitious and competitive, he’s tall, he’s athletic and strong, and he’s grumpy. Also intimidating – to his opponents and his teammates. The second-years on his team are scared of him. He hates to hear them trash-talking other players as they are only benchwarmers. He’s a setter – a control freak who takes every match he plays seriously, no matter the opponent. He will win at his best, dammit, and without holding back. He especially seems annoyed that the benchwarmers on his team place themselves above Hinata, even though they’re not even good enough to be regulars. “Don’t ride the coat-tails”, he tells them.
He wants to beat the block and the faster the attack, the better the hit, he believes. If people can’t keep up with him, that’s their fault. His sets are perfect. They need to keep up with him. If only they were as fast as Hinata, and capable of hitting difficult sets like when Izumi fumbles the ball and Shoyo leaps to save it and hits it anyway. They score their first genuine point off that, and Kageyama is impressed.
Kageyama and Shoyo are opposites, but they’re also mirrors of each other. Both are reckless: Kageyama throws reckless sets and Shoyo will leap for the ball even if he has to crash into walls and what-have-you. Both want to win. Both have their talents. Both love volleyball.
Something I found interesting is how the characters are in “sets”. Shoyo and Kageyama, obviously – their relationship is one of the major focuses of the whole series. The secondary characters too: Kunimi and Kindaichi to Kageyama and Izumi and Koji to Shoyo. They share the same jersey numbers: Kindaichi and Izumi are #5 and Kunimi and Koji are #6. These “sets” of minor characters only exist in the narrative in relation to each other. If Kindaichi appears, Kunimi is never far behind.
Izumi and Koji are third-years at this point, so why are their numbers lower than the first years? I realised (at the end of the episode) that Shoyo actually talked the first years into joining the volleyball club, not just the tournament team. Shoyo inspired a new generation of volleyball players – something he continues to do throughout the series.
Kindaichi and Kunimi are often showed in the background of Kageyama’s shots. Kunimi is the first person to serve in the game – he gets a few service aces. Kindaichi is the ace(?) of the team, often shown spiking Kageyama’s sets. This is an example of the subtle manipulation of the audience: hinting that these faces will reappear. It’s the same kind of story-telling that makes the reactors I’ve watched feel so smart when they predict something. The author wants you to notice them. The author is practically hanging a sign over them saying “remember these two!”.
When Kindaichi almost misses a reckless toss from Kageyama and expresses surprise that they managed to score from it, Kageyama responds “Faster!”, which makes Kindaichi irritated. Kunimi complain about his sets with him – Kunimi makes a comment about not having to work so hard as they’re outclassing Hinata’s team by miles – but Kageyama is taking the game seriously.
Kunimi and Kageyama squabble over Kunimi’s “laziness” – he doesn’t run for balls when they’re far enough in points, he doesn’t see why they have to try hard against such a weak and untrained team.
Kindaichi and Kageyama argue over Kageyama’s sets. Kageyama is the self-centred King of the Court after all. I think Kindaichi is actually a friendly sweetheart – and he seems to interact with Kageyama the most and deals with most of his sets. These missed friendships are missed opportunities for the three of them. (Manga spoilers): Kageyama shows he wants to be friends and play with them as adults.
Then, there are the Karasuno players. No faces, just those awesome black club jackets. I love those things. I now know that they are Suga, Daichi and Tanaka, but Furudate-sensei is good at building tension and anticipation by hiding their faces.
They appear in the stands at the junior high tournament, talking about Hinata and Kageyama’s match. Suga comments on Kageyama being “the King of the Court”. Ep 2 spoiler: Suga is a setter. Of course he’s going to appreciate Kageyama. Daichi also appreciates the overwhelming talent. It’s Tanaka who bets on Hinata becoming a threat. Tanaka seems to like Hinata’s spirit and athleticism. Ep 2 spoilers: He’s also the main hitter for the team at this point, so as the setter recognises the setter, the hitter acknowledges the hitter.
We later see them upon Shoyo’s arrival at Karasuno amongst the other clubs gathering applicants. Shimizu is also there. Daichi comments on the limited selection of applicants – this sets up the fact that Karasuno has been in decline: the “flightless crows” and such. There’s character establishing moments: Suga trying to cheer up Daichi and Tanaka flirting (and getting shut down) by Shimizu.
The Little Giant. Shoyo’s inspiration and hero, who shapes the entire course of his life. The 170 cm wing spiker makes him fall in love with volleyball and determined to enter Karasuno High School. Interesting how Shoyo never mentions his name. Maybe he doesn’t know it? He doesn’t really seem to understand the Little Giant at all. (Manga spoilers): I think this is why, by the time we meet Tenma Udai, he isn’t upset about his hero leaving volleyball behind. Now that he understands volleyball, he knows that he could never be the Little Giant anyway. Their play styles are different. Their positions are different. Shoyo can now be himself, forge his own playstyle – Ninja Shoyo, the ultimate decoy.
One thing I like about the characters is how their personalities/character development reflect their play styles, which becomes more apparent later on.
Motifs
“A tall, tall wall looms before me…”. This is the opening (and closing) of the season. It’s Shoyo’s greatest barrier – a literal wall holding him back from scoring. He can’t overcome it on his own, so, as shown in the opening scene, he needs the five other players on his side to get through it.
Crows (obvs). I find it funny to watch non-weeb reactors who don’t know what “Karasu” means. There are crows everywhere in this anime*.* The first time Shoyo sees the Little Giant jump, he sees black crow wings over the arms and gets blasted by crow feathers. Inspiration – seeing a human fly. Shoyo is now hooked on volleyball. When Shoyo’s running to the volleyball gym on Karasuno campus, he startles a crow who drops a feather in his face.
King of the Court. Before Shoyo even hears Kageyama’s nickname, he sees him wearing a cape and crown. The crowd (which Furudate-sensei often uses for exposition) also give him that name, and then Suga repeats it. When Kageyama appears in the hallway outside the bathroom, Shoyo sees him wearing the same outfit. Of course, Shoyo thinks this is a great thing – a reflection of his talent and powerful aura. Kageyama sets too fast for Kindaichi during the warm-ups and criticises him. Kindaichi rolls his eyes and half-heartedly apologies. The coach scolds him and tells him that the best set is the easiest for the hitter to spike.
Face receives. 2. 1 with a football (soccer) to Shoyo’s face, the other when Koji misses a receive.
“I can jump”. Shoyo says it to Kageyama while he’s being chastised for talking big. Izumi says it to Shoyo when they’re trying to sike themselves up for their match.
The pre-game bathroom break. Shoyo gets nervous after seeing Kitagawa Daichi and runs to the bathroom, only to run into players from the opposing team. This is a running gag throughout the series.
I don’t know if this counts, but I saw Shiratorizawa jackets in the crowd at the junior high tournament.
Many Youtube reactors commented on how Shoyo runs everywhere. He runs through the Karasuno campus on the way to the gym. The bouncing ball of sunshine has one gear: zoom. Similarly, Kageyama sets fast while Shoyo can cross the volleyball court in the blink of an eye. Their play styles complete each other.
Jersey numbers. Shoyo is 1, Kageyama is 2. When they get their jerseys (spoiler maybe?), Kageyama is 9 and Shoyo is 10. This is the only time Shoyo’s jersey number is higher than Kageyama. (Manga spoilers): in the V-league, Kageyama is 20, Shoyo is 21, then 9 and 10 again in the Olympics. As mentioned above, Kindaichi and Izumi are #5 and Kunimi and Koji are #6.
“One more” - mou ikkai. Hinata will forever ask for one more chance to play volleyball. He asks Izumi to set for him despite his complaints.
“The strong get to remain on the court”. Shoyo has to be good at volleyball to play volleyball. He wasn’t good enough to beat Kageyama, so he only got to play 31 minutes before having to leave, while everyone else got to play more games. Kageyama is used to winning at this point and only values people who can stay on the court.
Plot
Kageyama versus Hinata. This is arguably the main plot point of the series. Hinata wants to win and Kageyama defeats him. Hinata sees him as a good player, so if he also wants to be a good player, he needs to be able to outplay him. Kageyama envies his natural jumping height and speed. They argue and fight and challenge and inspire each other – destined rivals. Such a shounen trope.
Hinata is an underdog who had to fight to stay on the court. He didn’t have a coach, he didn’t have a team. Kind of an aside, but somehow he has good jumping form (according to Coach Donny) which seems to confuse volleyball players who react to Haikyuu. They wonder why he doesn’t know how to change his spike direction and forget that he’s new to the sport. As someone who doesn’t know anything about volleyball form, I found this interesting.
Hinata is willing to put the work in to develop his skills. At the beginning of the episode, he is horrified when a teacher suggests he joins the girl’s volleyball team but asks them for help (along with the 1st years who seem to be permanent members now) at the end of the episode during the montage. He also studies for the High School entrance exams and makes it into Karasuno – his determination has paid off and he wants to go to his dream school even if he has to bike over the mountains every day.
Kitagawa Daichi is in the newspaper/magazines stating their defeat. This is foreshadowing the downfall of Kageyama and the King of the Court and sort of the big plot twist at the end of the episode:
“I’m finally at Karasuno!” Shoyo thinks, running to his first meet at the gymnasium. Then...Boom – Kageyama. His sworn rival is now his teammate.
I'm sure I missed a whole lot of stuff but this was what caught my attention.

“We do now!!!!” You told him, rubbing your stomach
“Swee..sweetie are you serious?” He climbed over the desk grabbing you and pulling you between his legs.
“Yep!!! Surprise Kyo!!!”
He was a little shocked for a few minutes, you were telling him how excited you were but he could not register it. A kid, not one but three. Will they be like him? Scary? Will they think hes scary?!?
“Kyo?” You lightly tugged his shirt so he would look at you. “Kyo whats wrong?”
He squeezed you sighing deep. “Im nervous sweetie thats all.”
You laid your head on his chest. “Well.. i am too . But! I have you to help and you have me. Not to mention all your friends. “ you took his ring hand to hold it and nuzzled his sleeve. “I love you, we will be fine Kyo.”
Kyo took in a deep breath and kissed your head. “Yeah, we will. I love you so much sweetie.”
It was an interesting nine months for everyone. Kyo had gotten his friends together for beach volleyball one night , you were there too but you were sitting with a sundress on looking excited.
“Soo...” Iwaizumi said, rubbing his head. “Whats this about?”
Oikawa and Mattsun were stumped too, so was Yahaba. Bokuto was trying to piece it together as well.
You got up and turned to the side and Kyo put his hand on your stomach. “Well... lets just hope you can deal with more of me”
Safe to say Kyo got tackled into the sand by everyone.

💕Rex gets brushed every five minutes and he *loves it*. Kana also likes putting ribbons on his tail.
💕Mango is carried around everywhere by Kaito because he is small and “fun to carry”
💕The twins get up to no good alot. Souta is like the wind, no one ever knows if he's gonna do something. Kaito is more calm, like the ocean . But just like his brother, he's right there to lend a hand in mischief
💕Kana is attached to Kyo and Readers hip nearly 24/7 because she is scared of everything. She was tiny at birth. A “runt of the litter” Kyo called it, which gave her the nickname “Kana Pup” by Kyo. Everything is bigger than her and she doesn't like it. She's scared of Oikawa and it makes him sad.
💕Kyo and Reader own a bigger building together that they turned into The Dog House. They sell apparel but with Readers designs now too. The kids hangout at the shop usually after school.
💕The building has an upper floor or office area where Reader works on new designs / manages the finances while Kyo works the floor.
💕Souta and Kaito spend their days greeting customers and telling them specials (as best they can) . If Kana is not with her mother she is with Kyo at the register coloring under the desk so no one can see her.
💕kyo does not know what to do about Kana, he's worried she won't have friends and isolate herself. Iwaizumi suggests a hobby or club for middle school and Oikawa suggests volleyball.
💕its at the beach Kana realizes how fun volleyball is. She even lets Oikawa show her how to play.
💕Mattsun still has his tattoo shop. Kyo now has a back piece too. It's three wolf pups .
💕Kana joins the volleyball club
💕the twins join an art club and it is very interesting to them . Souta & Kaito are naturals at coming up with designs
💕iwaizumi babysits when Kyo and reader need alone time at the house
💕every now and then Kyo will check in on his kids at night, he leans on the wall of the door just watching them sleep. It's been a few years since they were born and he's still dumbfounded he could make such blessings
💕Kanas first game is a little rocky, she's nervous about people watching her. That is until Bokuto yells for the stands ‘all eyes on you because you are the star of this court!!!’ . She pulls through and turns out she spikes just like her father. They win because of her. Reader cries tears of joy and the twins are going nuts , Kyo pulls reader close kissing her
💕The twins debut a simple design. It's a crow with its wings out with a chain collar on its neck. Their parents love it.
Time skip to HighSchool
💕The kids go to Karasuno
💕The twins are in a design/business club
💕Kana is the wing spiker of her team. She is tall like her father and brings her team to Nationals.
💕Mattsun has a pretty little happy girl come into his shop one day asking for a fluffy kitty tattoo . Mattsun thanks god this is happening and gets her number
💕Oikawa & Iwaizumi still work at the Dog House. Oikawa now has the same volleyball tattoo his friends have. Iwaizumi helps the twins bring their designs up to sell online
After High School.
💕Kana plays for the Black Jackals. The twins have a successful online business selling their designs on different things.
💕Kyo and Reader have expanded the Dog House and it has more locations now.
💕Every friday night they spend their time laying on Kyos car with music on watching the stars in their backyard.
The end 💕
Little bonus mini drabbles!!
“raaaa!!!!!” Yelled Kaito
“Aaaarrgg!!!!” Yelled Souta.
Kana had her ears covered and had Chicken Legs laying down next to her with his paw over his eyes. She was sitting on the floor coloring in her book when her siblings rushed down the stairs with toilet paper and heavy eye makeup on their face and body. King, Rex and Mango were close behind with equal amounts of toilet paper on them too. This was a regular saturday...
Iwaizumi was on the couch watching these terrors run around the house . He pat Kana on the head counting quietly. “And 5...4...3...2...1...” The garage door could be heard and the twins and dogs stopped. Heavy steps and giggling were getting closer.
“Kaito.”
“Yes Souta?”
“It appears we are going to die today”
“Yes i believe so.”
Kana peaked at Iwaizumi and he just gave her that smile that made her get red in the face. The door opened and you and Kyo saw your kids covered in toilet paper and makeup. The dogs too. Kyo rubbed between his eyes and you giggled going over to Kana who was holding her arms up to you.
“Souta?”
“Yes Kaito?”
“It was nice knowing you.”
“Likewise”
(Whenever Kyo asks Iwai why he allows this he just shrugs and says “hey they aint my kids 😋”)
*💕
Kyo had picked the kids up from school and went straight into work. No one minded that the kids were there, they behaved. Mostly.
“Welcome to The Dog House!!!” Yelled the twins“The finest dogs and the biggest house!!! At your service!!!!”
Youd never seen so many metal heads giggle and chuckle like little kids before. Kana though, was under the register coloring and leaning on her fathers leg. Kyo leaned on the register looking down at his daughter.
“Kana pup”
“Papa..?” She asked, looking up, brushing her hair from her face.
“Do you wanna greet customers with your brothers?
She shrugged pulling the book closer. “N-no..”
He rolled his shoulders looking back up to see his friends frowning at him.
“Maybe a club will help”
“Or volleyball!!!”
*💕
The twins were running around the beach with Mattsun chasing them , Kyo, Iwa, and Kawa were tossing the ball to each other. And you were sitting on a towel under an umbrella with Kana clinging to your arm. You had noticed she was fixed on what her father was doing and you signaled to get his attention and pointed at yoir daughter.
“Kana pup.” He said, catching the ball. “Cmere for a second.”
She shook her head and you rubbed her side.”just for a second baby.”
Kana gets up joining her father and he crouches down behind her. “Put your fists together , be still okay?”
“ dont.. wanna get hit..”
“You wont i promise.” He nodded to Iwaizumi and he lightly tossed the ball to Kana . “Now just move your wrist down. Then connect with the ball semding it up”
As soon as the ball hit her wrists she whined turning around to hug her father. “Kana, look.” He turned her head . The ball was in the air . “You did it.”
“I.. i hit it.”
“Maybe Oikawa can explain better.” He said, getting up and Oikawa crouched down next to her. Kana whined giving him a scared look and he just held his hands out to recieve the ball.
“Its easy, promise!” The ball bounced off his wrists.
After a few tries Kana got the positioning right and even asked Oikawa to help and show her more.
*💕
One night Mattsun is at his shop filling in his laptop with appointments, transactions, bills. Its late, maybe almost 10. He liked to stay open when he had late nights like this. No one ever came by but.. it made him hope someone would. Mattsun was covered head to toe in tattoos. The bell dinged and he looked up from his desk and fell forward.
It was a girl; pink shoes, dyed highlighted pink hair, a white belly top and shorts. “Hey Mr!!!! Can i get a tattoo please?! A fluffy kitty or kitten? Do you do those? “
Mattsun smiled up at his ceiling . “Whoevers watching , thank you.”
He looked back over at the huffy girl. “Yeah i can do that Kitty, let me get a sketch going and you can tell me what you think.” He said with a very big smile. “Whats your name?” He asked , going around his desk to his wheely chair .
“Y/n!! “ the girl skipped over sitting in the chair criss cross. “Can you do it here?” She pointed to her inner thigh .
Mattsun thanked whoever was watching over him again but in his head. “I sure can y/n. I sure can.”
“No no!! Kitty!! I like it.”
Mattsun had a silly grin on his face now. “Okay kitty”
*💕
Its late at night and the only one up is Kyo. He was leaning on the wall watching his kids, ‘how did i get here?’ He asked himself while eyeing his bruised knuckles. Slowly he looked up. “I love you guys so much...”
“And i love you.” He heard behind him. A giggle too.

Tumblr media
☆ Sawamura Daichi ☆
Helps lost people find their way and regularly gives directions
We're talking off-duty, here Daichi puts the 'hot' in 'Hot Fuzz' 🥵
Hahaha, fuck 🙃
He's very approachable and warm, and gives excellent directions
He'll also walk them there if they don't understand or don't feel confident, even if it disrupts his day 🥺
And he's really good at helping lost kids and calming them down he feels so proud when he gets them back to their parents, safe and sound 🤗
×
☆ Kuroo Testurou ☆
Helps elderly people with their shopping bags and getting across roads
It goes against his nature to stand by and let an old person struggle, and even if they're not struggling, he always offers his services anyway
He has a soft spot for old people, 'kay? 🥺
He makes a point of getting the traffic to stop so it's safe, and letting them hold his arm as they slowly make their way across the street
They often tell him that he's 'a very sweet and handsome young man,' and 'nothing like the other young people you meet these days' and he blushes
×
☆ Ushijima Wakatoshi ☆
Gets things from the top shelves for people that they can't reach at the supermarket
It's a pretty normal thing to do, right? So he's chill about it
Except he will 100% walk down the entire length of the isle just to help if he sees you stuggling it's super cute 😩😍
But he won't smile or make idle conversation, or anything. He'll just nod courteously
It can be a little ominous, with his looming height and serious face, but most people take the gesture well 😊
×
☆ Iwaizumi Hajime ☆
Pays for the shopping of the person in front of him when their card gets declined or they don't have the right cash
He manages to offer in a way that isn't offensive or patronising he's honestly a life saver 🥺
He's very humble and casual about it
It's what he hopes someone would do for him, if he were in that awkward situation
And you never know what struggles people are facing, so his philosophy is to always be kind what goes around, comes around, my dudes 😌✌
×
☆ Sugawara Koushi ☆
Leaves snacks and a cute thank you note on the porch for the mailman
Or mailwoman! Or mailperson!
He hopes that the little gesture will brighten their tough day of work so precious, I can't 🥺🥰
There's usually a good selection, too no skimping here, no sirree 😌
If he's home, he'll give them a cheery wave through the window as well
Especially in this COVID-19 environment. Suga would really appreciate the services they're providing
×
☆ Bokuto Koutarou ☆
Spends time every week playing with the cats and dogs at the local shelters
This man is hoenstly a blessing, I physically can't 🤧
He loves seeing their little faces light up when he walks in, scruffling their ears and playing fetch, etc. and just generally showing them that they're still loved 🥺😭
And he helps take the dogs for walks too, so they get their exercise, and brushes them down, and rubs their tummies–
He wants to adopt, but he's not settled enough, so he knows he can't 😭 but it's his goal
One day 😖
×
☆ Azumane Asahi ☆
Always holds doors open for other people
We're not just talking the occasional, feebly held door
Asahi will ALWAYS hold a door open for anyone else
Men, women, children, old people, people with prams, whole families– literally everyone
He is TALL and STRONG, and he will be USEFUL
He will hold it open even if you're really far away, like the giant dork that he is 😂😂 you cannot escape
×
☆ Oikawa Tooru ☆
Often pays for the next customer's coffee in advance
Sure, it makes him feel good about himself. But, I mean, why not? What's so wrong with that?
Oikawa calls it SAOK-ing people (pronounced 'soaking') meaning: Secret Acts of Kindness Iwa-chan has told him to change the name, but he won't 🙄
Oikawa would love the touching joy of a stranger paying for his coffee in advance, so he gets a warm, tingly feeling when he thinks about it happening to someone else because if him he's literally beaming for the rest of the day 🥰
Tumblr media
☆ Akaashi Keiji ☆
Buys food and drinks for homeless people when he passes them
He sometimes stops to have a chat with them, too 😔🤧
He's the least condescending person you could meet if you're in trouble he's so genuine, I can't
Except for maybe Iwa-chan and Daichi. They're also very down-to-earth
He'll also give them all his food vouchers that he's been collecting in his wallet to help spread their costs
Akaashi finds it hard to watch other people struggling and suffering, and so always makes the time for it when he can afford to
×
☆ Nishinoya Yuu ☆
Helps make up the numbers for the kids playing games in the park
Be it soccer, dodgeball, basketball, volleyball, tag, or something else entirely, Noya loves to see the kids running around in the park, playing games and enjoying themselves
So he's only too happy to join in when they need more players he'll sometimes recruit Tanaka to help as well
Yuu fits right in with them, both in height and mentality 😂😭😂😭
He may or may not get them to call him 'senpai' 🙄😂
×
☆ Tanaka Ryuunosuke ☆
Helps fix people's cars on the road
Tanaka's one of those people that knows how to change a flat, and so can't drive past someone having car trouble without stopping and helping
He's also a pretty good handy-man in general, and is always willing to help out his friends and neighbours with their jobs that need doing
Like plumbing problems, putting up shelves, building furniture, etc. He's good with his hands!
Kiyoko: 👁👄👁
And he'll never charge a penny! He's all too happy to do it out of friendship and the kindness of his heart 😇
×
☆ Kozume Kenma ☆
Hosts gaming charity livestreams for various causes on a regualr basis
All the donations go directly to the charity of choice for the stream, not through him, so everyone knows it's legit 😇
He also donates gaming consoles etc. to charities and organisations that help kids who are in hospital
He's a huge advocate for charities and organisations that focus on helping people through gaming, like AbleGamers and St Jude PLAY LIVE, and regularly donates to them
Honestly, Kenma is an angel 🥺 👉👈
×
☆ Miya Atsumu ☆
Gives up his seat on public transport for old/pregnant/disabled etc. people
Look, Tsumu can be a little selfish and grouchy at times, but he's not a complete asshole 👉👈
There's a line, and hogging seats on public transport when someone else clearly needs it more than him is, indeed, the line 😌
He'll do it without a second thought or a fuss, and with a smile on his face but will be low-key proud of himself, ngl
He will also get offended if someone else doesn't give up their seat when they should, and may confront them about it 😳 like, what makes you so special that you can't do that simple courtesy that even he does??
×
☆ Miya Osamu ☆
Donates food to charities and shelters
Both store-bought food and from his own shop
Literally gets so depressed at the thought of people not getting to eat 🥺
This man LOVES FOOD. And people are out there not able to?!
He also has a scheme set up where homeless and stuggling people can come into his shop for some free onigiri
This man 🥺🤧 can I please marry him already?!
×
☆ Sakusa Kiyoomi ☆
Donates sanitary supplies like soap, toothpaste, antibacterial gel, pads, tampons, etc. to shelters on a regualr basis
Literally cannot abide the idea that people are forced to live without these basic necessities, simply because they can't afford them
It's almost for his own peace of mind rather than theirs? 😅😂 almost. He does actually care on their behalf, too
But he doesn't like to make a big deal out of it, and so donates anonymously
His donations are literally a godsend to those people, though 🥺😭
Tumblr media
☆ Hinata Shouyou ☆
Reads books to kids at the library when he's there with Natsu
And he's really good at it! He reads very animatedly, and really gets the kids engaged with the stories you can just imagine it
The kids all love him and bring him their favourite books to read!
And the parents all watch and compliment him on how good he is with kids
And this goofball just blushes and grins like a doof 😚 so freaking sweet
×
☆ Kageyama Tobio ☆
Always carries a spare umbrella with him to give to someone
He hates getting caught in the rain himself, so he keeps a spare just in case this precious baby 🥺
He's had to use it quite a few times, sometimes giving it to people he doesn't even know, so he ends up not getting it back and has to buy a new spare
But it makes him smile, if a bit awkwardly, to know that he's helped someone out, even just a little Tobio!! 😭🤧🥺
×
☆ Tsukishima Kei ☆
Steps into the road to allow room for people with pushchairs and prams
I know it might not seem like much, but this is Tsukki, guys 🙄
*Narrator voice* this is one small step for man, one giant leap for Tsukishima!
And this just goes to show that he's not as tough of a cookie as he looks
He doesn't like the idea of parents etc. and young children having to walk in the road he gets worried for them...🤭
And he does it consciously, which is important
×
☆ Yamaguchi Tadashi ☆
Spends time each week looking for the animals on the 'lost' and 'missing' posters around town
He hates to think of them out there, cold, alone, frightened–
It makes him feel nauseous just thinking about it 😣
My poor, precious baby!! He's too pure for this world!! 😭
It's not often, but sometimes he actually manages to find one and bring it back to its owner safely, which is a huge boost for his mood and confidence
He feels so valued and appreciated, and just happy that the little guy is SAFE 😇🤧
×
☆ Haiba Lev ☆
Helps strangers get their cats out of trees and other high places
What else is a tall, handsome, goofball-of-a stranger to do? 😌
Legit, he doesn't think twice. Tall people should use their height to help people, shouldn't they?
Sure, it doesn't always go to plan, and his arms sometimes end up looking like well-used scratching poles, but he's just glad to help 😇
It's good to see the cats safe and with their owners
♡°☆•♡°☆•♡

Kageyama and Hinata’s relationship in Haikyuu
*spoiler alert of the manga*
Haikyuu ended last year and I admit that, because I had been reading it for long enough to consider myself a fan, I was pretty scared of how Furudate, the author, would handle the finale; basically, I was afraid they would come up with a rushed and little to no sense story of Hinata and his friends all married with children.
To my surprise (or my relief), it did not end up like that. It was quite the opposite.
The lack of romantic relationships in its ending made me think of how well Furudate wrote relationships in the manga; and I’m not talking about romance but friendship, family and companionship.
Hinata and Kageyama’s bond is the most perfect example of this.
At some point in the finale of the manga, we are shown a panel of a much younger Kageyama and his grandparent, looking at him and telling him: “If you get really good, I promise you, somebody who’s even better will come and find you”.
Tumblr media
The thing is that his grandparent dies, he’s suddenly alone, and by being a “prodigy” it seems like no one is near as good as him in volleyball.
While we are insinuated that Kageyama got to handle his grief all by himself, we can finally understand why he has so much trouble communicating with others, and seeming rude by asking everyone to always give the best of them when they’re playing. He tries to live up to the words of his grandparent, but because he is still a boy, it only leads him to being outcasted and unable to form any kind of bond with others.
That’s until Hinata appears in the picture.
And it may make no sense at first, because Hinata is really bad at volleyball, and he has never really played it, because during middle school there wasn’t a boys club for volleyball, so he had to practice alone. But the thing is, even when Hinata considered him “his enemy” for beating him a year ago, he is the first person to truly take Kageyama’s words seriously and trust him.
During the manga they develop a strong friendship and rivalry, each pushing the other to become even stronger; and because Kageyama was a genius and had way more experience than him, he always was one step above Hinata.
That’s until the time skip and the Brazil arc right before the end of the manga.
The main reason Hinata went to Brazil was to become better; to be able to stand side by side with Kageyama as equals and then, and only then, become the best rivals they both know they could be.
It’s in the middle of the match between Schweiden Adlers, Kageyama’s team, and MSBY, Hinata’s team, when the game it’s on its highest level, that we are shown that Kageyama’s grandparent was right, because he got better and met people really strong and, at the very end, his “someone even better” showed up and made him enjoy volleyball for as long as they could, reminding him one more time that volleyball is fun.
Tumblr media
Hinata and Kageyama's relationship is something I really enjoyed, because it is no longer friendship, but it’s also not romantic; so those who don’t think they should be anything more than friends, and those who think they should, can both enjoy the manga and make their own conclusion.
They are rivals and each other’s someone even better, and I personally love that Furudate decided to make them the most important person in each other's lives without making it romantic, because it gives the center of attention to the bond itself, not the title it has.
Furudate has the ability to phrase and describe beautifully even the most mundane things, like volleyball for example; concepts like “strong”, “good” or “better” in terms of volleyball are shown frequently, but their meaning it’s different than what we are used to. Being good at volleyball, being a strong player, does not mean to be above everyone else, or to be the very best till the point no one can compare to you; being strong and better and good means you get to stay a little bit longer in the court, means that they get to enjoy volleyball for more time than others.
And that’s the beauty of their bond: to make the other push even harder, to the point where they are the best players they can be, and are able to have the most fun with volleyball for as long as the other is there, and maybe, even further.

Piano Man
Tumblr media
Category: Romantic Fluff
Fandom: Haikyuu!!
Characters: Hajime Iwaizumi, Tooru Oikawa
Hello, everyone! I’m happy to present my story for the Seijoh Exchange for my giftee, kamunamis! I hope you all enjoy a good dose of IwaOi AU fluff!
Hajime scrubbed the residue from the whiskey glass with a thin white rag, then lifted it over his head to inspect the surface, using the refraction of the fluorescent lights in the crystalline surface to illuminate any specks he might have missed. Once he was satisfied that the glass was indeed clean, he set it beside the rest of the clean glasses before picking up the next dirty one, cleaning the soap residue away. While he used his thumb to push the rag against the sleek glass, he lifted his brown eyes to sweep across the bar, making sure he hadn’t missed any new customers while attending to his other chores.
The old man who’d been throwing back beers like water for the last hour was still going strong, smacking his lips lazily while he watched the volleyball game on the television hanging above the bar. The college student who’d been flirting with a sorority girl had apparently failed in his attempts at courtship because he was now sitting alone and grumbling into his hard cider. The pair of young moms who’d come out for a girls’ night had abandoned their martinis to sip at their waters, sobering up to return home to their children. The alcoholic who’d come in for his daily dose of bourbon was now passed out asleep, filling the air with loud, obnoxious snores. Hajime tipped his head at the bouncer, Issei, indicating it was time to wake the man up and call him a cab.
Hajime liked his job, all things considered. Though it was hard, and sometimes he had to deal with the most blockheaded of society, it was well worth it for the things he overhead. Working in a job like this, he had really come to appreciate just how colorful people were.
For example, those two moms were actually single moms— both of their husbands had perished in active duty, and they’d bonded over their struggles. He’d learned today that one of them actually had a date in a few days, and he’d congratulated her by giving them their first two martinis on the house. The sleeping drunkard had squandered his life savings gambling, leading to a nasty divorce, and now he just nursed his sorrows with alcohol instead. The gang of sorority girls giggling over margaritas in the corner was celebrating their finals for the semester, all congratulating each other on earning top marks. Hajime saw the highs and the lows of society, a rainbow of colorful folks from all walks of life.
Yet his eyes always drifted to the door when the most colorful of the bunch to frequent the bar strode in.
Tooru Oikawa smiled prettily at the waitress as she passed by carrying a tray laden with drinks, making her flush and hurry away as fast as her wedges could carry her. A few of the men watching the volleyball game at a table covered in empty glasses and the remnants of bar snacks raised their drinks to him, and he paused to chat amicably with them about the state of the game before bidding them a pleasant night. As he strutted across the bar, he shrugged out of his coat and tossed it over his shoulder, then rolled the sleeves of his button-up shirt to just below his elbows. Hajime couldn’t help the way he swallowed thickly at the way Tooru’s muscles gleamed in the lowlight of the bar— how did a pianist have such defined arm muscles, for crying out loud?
Tooru was the bar’s hired musician. He came in three nights a week— Ladies’ Night, their Friday Happy Hour, and Saturday Game Days— to provide live music via the large grand piano that sat on the small stage in the corner. His music was always a hit, and the regular customers liked his electric and charming personality— especially the waitresses, so Hajime always had to be extra vigilant in making sure they were actually delivering their orders instead of ogling at the pretty musician. Admittedly, Hajime was also a fair bit jealous and wanted to be the only one to stare at the handsome man, but like hell he would ever admit that aloud.
“You’re staring.”
Hajime nearly jumped out of his skin as Issei spoke. He shot a cold look at the taller man, making the bouncer tip back his head in laughter. Snorting, Hajime stomped over to the other end of the bar to tend to a customer, then walked back to begin mixing rum and various fruit juices into a glass. “You can’t blame me,” Issei purred as he leaned against the counter, his amused eyes watching the streams of alcohol and fruit juice cascade down into the glass. “Your pining over him is one of the few things that brings me entertainment.”
“Yeah, well, it’s not very entertaining to me,” Hajime gruffed back, shooting him a glare before carrying the rum punch over to the girl who’d ordered it. He snatched up another glass to begin cleaning it on the way back, still glaring at Issei. “Why do you always come over here to nag me about him?”
“Besides the fact that you look at him like you want to jump his bones?” Issei laughed, and Hajime threw his rag at him. Issei pulled it off his face and dropped it on the counter, and Hajime snatched it back up to resume cleaning the glass. “Come on, Hajime, it’s painful watching you pine over him. Just grow a pair and ask him out already!”
“Please,” Hajime snorted in derision, setting the clean cup down and picking up another. “A guy like that? You know he’s taken.” Someone at the bar called for another beer, so Hajime ignored the way that Issei’s eyes gleamed knowingly to grab one out of the freezer and carry it over to the man. When he came back, Issei was drumming his fingers against the wood of the counter, leaning his cheek in his hand while he gazed at Hajime like he knew something downright devilish.
“Come on, Hajime, you’re insulting my skill as a wingman,” Issei hummed. “I know for a fact that he’s single, and I know for a fact that he thinks you’re cute.”
Hajime’s face blazed bright pink, and he froze on the spot, struggling to process what Issei said. A girl came up to the bar pleasantly asking for a daiquiri, and it took Issei reaching forward to nudge his arm for him to snap out of his stupor. After hurriedly grabbing the ingredients and throwing him in the blender, he leaned over the counter to ask over the crunching ice and swirling fruit juice, “He thinks I’m cute?”
“Very,” Issei smirked with a meaningful wiggle of his eyebrows. Hajime’s gaze slowly drifted to Tooru, who was now sitting at the piano. Behind his glasses, his eyes were intensely focused, but a smile alit his lips as his fingers glided across the keys. Hajime had honestly never cared about the music; Tooru’s movements just seemed like magic every time he played, his body moving so languidly in rhythm with the sweet chimes of the keys. He forgot to blink, forgot to breathe even as he watched him, so he definitely forgot about the daiquiri. “Hajime, your drink,” the bouncer chuckled while snapping his fingers in front of Hajime’s face, making the ravenet jump slightly and hurry to finish making the drink before the girl’s pleasant attitude took a nosedive.
“Look, man,” Issei said when Hajime slumped back against the counter in front of him, pouting as he ruminated on whether or not to finally ask Tooru out. “If you don’t make a move soon, someone else will, and I shudder to think of how grumpy you’ll get watching him strut around with someone else.”
Hajime’s lips curled down into a frown just thinking about it. No, he would not enjoy that at all. Still, it was always a drag, asking someone out— even if Issei had given him a fair bit of confidence that Tooru wouldn’t refuse. He drummed his fingers on the table as he studied the wood grain of the counter in contemplation. Finally, he grumbled, “All right, all right, I’ll do it if it means getting you of my ass.”
“You wound me,” Issei huffed and splayed a hand over his heart in mock hurt. “I go to the trouble of wingmanning for you, and you treat me like this? You’re so cold.”
“Shut up and get back to the door,” Hajime said gruffly, shoving Issei lightly in the shoulder. Still, a smile danced on his lips, one that Issei didn’t miss. The tall man simply hummed “Good luck~” as he headed back to the door, leaving Hajime to figure out how in the hell he was supposed to ask a guy like Tooru Oikawa out on a date without looking stupid. Hajime was good at pretty much only one thing, and that was making drinks.
Wait. That might just be to his advantage, he thought, his gaze sliding to the bottles of liquor lining the back wall. He sidled up to the shelves, crossing his arms as he studied the various drinks; he then looked over his shoulder at Tooru, who was lost in the piano notes. Yeah… Yeah, I think that’ll do, he thought and looked back at the shelves, then leaned up to grab a bottle of vodka and some sour apple liqueur. I think this’ll do just fine.
Hajime approached Tooru as he was taking a break. The piano player straddled the bench, kicking his feet against the solid wood while he watched the volleyball game with interest. He saw Hajime approaching from the periphery, and when he turned to look at him, his eyes brightened with delight. It made Hajime’s heart stutter; half of him wanted to grin like mad, and half of him wanted to hurl the caramel apple martini in Tooru’s face for some inexplicable reason.
“Ooh? Is that for me?” Tooru crooned with delight when he saw the green drink in his hand. “I hope it isn’t a replacement for my paycheck,” he joked as he shifted on the bench, sliding over to allow room for Hajime to sit. Hajime gave Tooru the martini as he sat down, and he watched the brunet study the caramel swirls on the inside of the cup, the green liquid swirling within, and the apple slice garnishing the rim with more interest than he wanted to show. With a pointed look at Hajime, Tooru sipped at the martini, then pulled away while smacking his lips. “Wow. That’s a good drink, Mr. Bartender.”
“I thought you’d like it, Piano Man,” Hajime smirked. “You seem the type to enjoy fruity martinis.”
“Oh no, did the bouncer tell you?” Tooru said with a playful pout, leaning in a little close to Hajime’s face. He blushed on instinct, and looked at Issei to find him smothering a laugh with his hand. “That rascal,” Tooru continued with a rumble in his voice that made Hajime’s nerves sing. “I thought I could trust him.”
“Issei?” Hajime huffed. “You can’t trust him as far as you can throw him.” His blase humor could always help him keep his cool. Thankfully, Tooru laughed, his eyes glittering as he studied Hajime over the rim of the martini. His nervousness returning, Hajime’s tongue flicked out to wet his lips. Immediately, Tooru’s eyes flicked down to his mouth and then back up to his eyes, and Hajime swore his face was going to catch on fire.
“Do you enjoy fruity martinis, Hajime?” Tooru asked, the mischievousness gleaming in his eyes belying the innocent tone of his voice. Body heat rising to uncomfortable levels, Hajime began tugging at the collar of his uniform shirt.
“I might be so inclined, depending on the martini,” he grumbled, looking away for a second. Of course, he couldn’t help but glance back at Tooru out of the corners of his eyes, and he was relieved to find a gleeful expression lighting up his face. “I can’t drink on the clock,” he continued slowly, “but I get off in an hour, if you’re willing to stick around and hang out in this dive for a while.”
“I’d love to,” Tooru hummed. He then tossed back the rest of the martini, squinting his eyes at the sour liqueur. Hajime thought he would hand the glass back to him, but while maintaining direct eye contact, Tooru licked every single bit of the caramel swirls from inside the glassHajime's mouth fell open as he unabashedly watched Tooru’s tongue slowly lap up the thick caramel syrup, so stunned that he didn’t even have the sense to blush. Chortling in a low voice, Tooru tapped the martini glass against Hajime’s cheek to indicate that he was finished.
“Better get back to work, Mr. Bartender,” he winked. Robotically, Hajime rose from the piano bench and took the glass before walking back to his work station. He chanced a look at Issei, and nearly hurled the glass across the room as the bouncer stuck out his tongue and wiggled it at him. Red-faced, embarrassed, and admittedly excited, Hajime dunked the martini glass into the sink of soapy water for the resident dishwasher to attend to before looking back at Tooru. He was back to playing again, eyes lidded and a smile on his face as his body swayed to the beat.
Tooru looked at Hajime from across the room, his smile widening until his eyes crinkled up, and Hajime couldn’t help but melt a little. I suppose I’ll have to thank Issei later, he thought with a small sigh, picking up his rag and another glass to begin cleaning again. Though I might punch him in the face first, he thought with a slight grimace when he noticed the bouncer slinking over, looking like he was ready to give Hajime all the hell he could offer.
“So? Did my wingmanning bear fruit?” Issei hummed. Hajime just snorted, scrubbing a particularly troublesome speck from the glass before lifting it up to the light.
“Please. The caramel apple martini was a way better wingman than you,” Hajime huffed, but he couldn’t stop the smile from appearing on his face. “Though I suppose you helped a little, so thanks.” Issei just snorted and mumbled something about how Hajime was an asshole, but he had a smile on his face, too.
The piano tunes continued to echo through the bar, a colorful melody for the colorful people drawn to this little hole-in-the-wall. Here, Hajime saw the best and the worst of society, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world— because it was the best place to be, he thought with a smile, dropping the glass to look at Tooru again. It was the best place to be.

I love your blog. Can you recommend some anime that get better the more times you watch them. Good re-watchability anime I guess is what you'd call it. Shows that you can rewatch and see something new that makes the show better
Hi! This is an interesting ask, and at first I wasn’t sure how to answer. However, when I started looking through my list of anime I noticed that there we a lot of anime that fell into this category. Hope this Helps!!!
Erased (9/10): This anime is about Satoru who experiences a phenomenon known as revival. Revival usually makes Satoru relive the last few minutes to change the world around him. When his mother is killed Satoru is transported back to his elementary school self where he needs to find a kidnapper from the past that ends up murdering his mother in the future. Since this show is a murder mystery there are a lot of things that get overlooked during the first viewing. Armed with your knowledge after watching this through the first time will make you more aware of hidden gems from the show Supernatural, romance, thriller
Tumblr media
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (10/10): This show has a lot of moving parts and they cover a lot of information rapidly. FMA:B also has a lot of characters and during the initial watch through you might not appreciate some side characters as much as you should. Plus, rewatching this show helps you gain perspective on how much the characters have grown. The anime follows the Elric brothers as they hunt for clues on how to gain their bodies after an equivalent exchange goes wrong. Edward is missing limbs; while Alphonse lost his whole body and has now possessed a suit of armor. This brothers will win your heart and make you happily rewatch their story. Supernatural, Comedy, Action, Mystery
Tumblr media
Haikyuu!! (10/10): This show follows Hinata and the other members of the Karasuno volleyball team as they strive to prove that they can rise to the challenge and win the Spring Volleyball Tournament. Depending on your familiarity with volleyball, the first time you watch you might be learning the rules and trying to keep the large cast of characters straight. I feel like rewatching this anime can show you just how great some of the game play was as well as the overall character growth. Plus, the first time I rewatched it I found I enjoyed it better since I had already learned everyone’ s names and it was an easier watch. Sports, Slice of Life, “Action”
Tumblr media
Hybrid Child (10/10): If you haven’t watched this masterpiece yet you need to watch it, cry, then rewatch it. This show has an inception type feeling since you’re not given all of the information in a linear fashion, but instead follow three different couples and try and piece together the truth. A skillful craftsman named Kuroda creates beings known as Hybrid Child that grow from the love that they’re given. The story takes a turn as you learn how Hybrid children were first created and the powerful message that love can grow and save us when we are in our darkest moments. This show is a masterful representation of storytelling and the first show I thought of when I saw this ask. The more times you watch the show you find little easter eggs and see something in a new light. I feel like I didn’t appreciate this show the first time I watched it because I was trying to comprehend everything, but after rewatching it you have those ah-ha moments as you find something new. Supernatural, Romance, Slice of Life, Historical, Action
Tumblr media
Kimi No Na Wa/Your Name (10/10): This is the most beautiful animation on this list and one of the best received anime on this list. As of this posting it was ranked as the #7 best anime on myanimelist. This anime starts as a silly show about a girl and boy who have switched bodies, and before you know what’s happening the show goes from fun loving-slice of life to an epic supernatural-romantic-nail biter. The first time you watch this you’re captivated by the story and art, and the second time you watch you’ll still be as floored as the first time. Supernatural, Romance, Suspense, Action
Tumblr media
Mirai Nikki (9/10): This is one of those shows where once you know the ending you’ll never see the show the same again. Mirai Nikki tells the story of a boy named Yuki who records his daily life on his phone in a dairy. Then when the God of Space and Time decides to host a battle to the death Yuki finds his diary can predict the future and can help him win the game. However, victory is not guaranteed because every member of this death game has their own dairy that help them in different ways. Thriller, Mystery, Action, Romance, Supernatural
Tumblr media
Attack on Titan (9/10): If you are currently up to date with the show then rewatching it can help you string together some of the background narratives of some of the supporting characters. Plus, you’ll find clues to the truth about the identity of the armored, colossal, and female titans if you didn’t notice them before. Plus I feel like rewatching this show helps you realize how much of an impact Armin really had on everything (yes this is a shameless Armin plug...sue me) Attack on Titan tells the story of humanity who have been living behind three mysterious walls that ‘protect’ them from the titans. Then one day the outer wall is destroyed and the peace that has lasted between humans and titans turns into a bloodbath. Action. Gore, Thriller, Adventure, Supernatural

^_^ hey ! im a sun sag , aries rising and libra moon for haikyuu match up im so happy you got 100 followers you deserve it !!!! congratulations
thank you and i am sorry for being a lazy hoe and making you wait so long
I match you with Sugawara Koushi
star sign: Gemini
Tumblr media
Sagittarius Sun: With the sun situated in Sagittarius it indiactes a person who simply wants to explore the world around them. Suga is the perfect person to do this with, your dates are often full of adventure, these range from going on hike for the day and having a picnic on top of the hill (with the scenic view because duh romance), going out dancing (at the nighclubs if you are over 18 and yes he does get “down and dirty i will leave that to your imagination) and of course 3am convenience store trips. Suga loves that you take life as one big adventure and he always refers to you are his little explorer. Those with this placement are funny and cheerful, Suga abosolutely loves your positive energy and the pair of you are just two beautiful sunshine children, Asahi is slighly terrifed of you too because whenever he is doubting himself you both karate chop him (NEGATIVITY BEGONE). Also your jokes never fail to make Suga and the team laugh, you always see the team before their matches as your light hearted humour always helps the teams nerves. Furthermore, you are the litereal number 1 cheerleader for Karasuno, every game you and Saeko Tanaka are literally screeming your lungs out, and when Suga is put on and you are cheering for him, game over for the other team. Finally Sagittarius sun’s are known to love their freedom and hate any sort of restrictions. Suga is the perfect combinaton of chaos and order, like he would join in any sort of plan you have because he is a supportive boyfriend (for example, a food fight) but also knows when something is quite dangerous and he would hate it when you got hurt. If you ever did get hurt, doctor suga is here, he literally kisses the wounds better and puts on these pink cute plasters on you. The rest of the day Suga is going to be a little bit clingy, this behaviour includes you being on his lap and him just drowning you in cute chaste kisses.
Libra Moon: The emotional expression of those with Libra moon are peaceful and polite. Suga just adores how sweet you are, like when you offered to help kiyoko and yachi clean up because you felt bad for interupting practice, he literally picked you and spun you about, like why are so precious. Suga wants a person who he believes he can show off to his friends and family and you fit the bill, he is constantly talking about all the sweet things you do and say to him. Daichi and Asahi are fed up but they never tell him that because he just has this starry look on his face whenever he talks about you. Furthermore, libra moons tend to be very creative and have some sort of creative interest that they express their emotions through, Suga is literally your number one supporter, the two of you go to the theatre, art galleries and museums and literally you look like that trendy couple in the movies. It is super romantic because he insists to hold your hands the whole time and buys you a cup of coffee, sometimes you like to just run down to the street as you both race each other to the train station. Your sweet giggles is a sound he will never get tired of and of course he takes pictures on his polaroid camera (to capture the sweetest person alive- his little explorer). Libra moons are in love with love and are simply hopeless romantics, Suga loves to indulge in your little fantasies, for example for your year aniversary he literally cooked you a home cooked meal (3 courses and everything) and decorated his entire house with rose petals and candles, he even insisted that he would clean up. For the remaining of the night he literally held you close as you both swayed to the music in the background. Suga loves that smile on your face when he goes out of his way to do something extra romantic and he knows that all the preparations are worth it just to see your adorable expression.
Aries Rising: People with aries rising are known to be confident and strong, you will never not notice them. Suga definetely digs that vibe, like he always sneaks an arm around your waist because again he just loves to show you off, like that’s my girl. Before being in a relationship with him, he always loved to tease you about anything because of your strong responses and reactions (he couldn’t think of another way to make you notice him ok). He used to compliment you very loudly and some even a bit suggestive because he wanted to see you being shy however when you replied with something equally suggestive you had him hook line and sinker. Daichi was the only one actually getting embarassed. Those with Aries Rising know how to assert themselves and can easily stand up for what is right. Whenever Suga doubts himself as a volleyball player because of his own self esteem issues or someone suggesting this, you are ready to throw hands. You give one of the greatest pep talks ever and you literally kiss and cuddle him and you just make him feel like he is the luckiest man alive, also to the other people you do just start and argument with them (you always win because Aries Risings just have that intimidating presence) and Suga just watches you roast the living daylights out of them with a smug look on his face. Aries rising are also great leaders, Suga is a very easy going person and does not mind when you take the lead in your relationship because he knows it is something you naturally do. He loves it when you take the reins because he can just relax and enjoy your company, also he loves to be bossed around, like this lazy grin just appears in his face and whenever you get too bossy he always refers to you as “your highness”. Overall, your relationship is full of fun and laughter, with you too the adventure never stops it is only just beginning
-----------------------
i am so sorry if this is too cringy at all, i was debating for weeks who to match you up with.
I hope you have a lovely morning/evening wherever you are in the world
Take care

Again, I won’t say I’m happy with how “abrupt” everything ends. But, idk, maybe it’s a blind trust to Furudate on my part or just me “taking it easy” (callback to Hinata’s advice to Hyakuzawa and his high first touch in the match with Inarizaki), I’m honestly not mad.
Yes, we got robbed of the approximately 5 years of Karasuno and other teams that we love so much, but given the build-ups (I’m talking about the Brazil panel on chapter 15, Kageyama and Hinata talking about a showdown on international level, Furudate’s message about writing an Olympic arc and other things), this “Final Arc” actually makes sense. Furudate has planned this from a long time ago, from the very beginning I might say.
A lot of people been saying this, but yes, it’ll be too repetitive and maybe uninteresting to some people if we move on to 2nd and 3rd years. Why? Coz we’d have same InterHigh preliminary, same Spring Tourney preliminary, same Nationals, and obviously, same rival schools (maybe add more). Personally, I don’t mind if these happened. I mean, more developments for the other characters? Sign me up! My other favorite sport mangas also followed this pattern (Daiya no Ace and Yowamushi Pedal). But I can’t deny, some of my friends thought that it’s “boring” (I disagree but I respect their opinion).
While this “Final Arc” is so sudden and I still can’t bring myself to say goodbye to Haikyuu!! yet, it is happening. There’s no way Haikyuu!! still running until I’m 80 (I wish). Tho, keep in mind that it takes 7 years for Furudate to finish 1 high school year. Therefore, this final arc won’t just end in months. Take it easy and relax, guys. It’d probably take a minimum a year (my bet is actually more than 2 years lol).
If this still doesn’t convince you, you can follow my coping mechanism. Drop Haikyuu!! for a while. Pick it up later (say 3 months) and read it from the last arc. It’ll make much more sense that way. It might even soothe your longing and pain.
Now, moving on to explanations and predictions:
Kageyama in a National team and fought in 2016 Olympic honestly surprised no one. He is a volleyball-sexual (to all shippers out there, me included, puh-lease, we need to admit it) and he’s that good. His stats is one of the highest and he was still a first year at that time. Once Furudate gives us the updated stats, I know it’ll be even higher. He’s a genius/prodigy/whatever else you wanna call him.
As for Hinata, okay, I know this will surprise people, but I always have a headcanon that he’d live in a foreign country lol. It turned out to be true, even though the backstory might be different. My reason for this is because we never see his dad (tbh we almost never see the members’ parents, hence why my imagination goes wild) and it’s not impossible for his dad to work overseas. So I always headcanoned that maybe, once Hinata graduated high school, he might want to/have to live with his dad in that faraway country. ‘Have to’ is probably more than 'Want to’ but because this is Brazil we’re talking about and volleyball is big there, Hinata might want to challenge himself more tho. I saw someone commented in Reddit that Hinata possibly went to Brazil coz he didn’t get invitations from universities. Tbh, I’m a bit doubtful. As Coach Hibarida said, the small players don’t just sit around and do nothing. They showed themselves and their abilities and those qualities caught the attention of the scouting agents. Hinata made a name for himself in Nationals. Oikawa once said that he’s the kind of player that a setter wants to toss to (and Miya Atsumu kinda confirmed this with his line of “I’ll toss to you one of these days”). Bokuto also said how even though he’s tiny, his presence is huge. Hell, Hinata probably became a hero for people (especially small people) who saw him on TV. Similar to how Little Giant became his hero. There’s no way no university is interested in him. That’s why I think he has a personal reason for coming to Brazil.
This is probably a stretch and just my hopeful self screaming, but as a callback to Kageyama when he said he wanted to win with this team (this team as in, the current Karasuno), my prediction is that it could be a foreshadowing on Furudate’s part. It could be that somehow, someway, the current Karasuno would be placed in a same team again (probably with some of the rival teams’ members too) and they will fight together in whatever the match Furudate has planned to happen. I just wanted to see my children again, okay, so lemme hope.
I always think about Kageyama’s line too much: "What have you been doing these past 3 years?!”. Yes, what have you been doing these past 2-3 years in Brazil, Hinata?! Hinata’s also a volleyball-sexual, so he must be doing some training himself. I don’t believe that he has lost his passion for volleyball (like The Little Giant). And he has a promise with Kageyama too. He could be running and jumping around the sandy beaches in Brazil and it made his speed, stamina, and jump even more impressive (hey, just make him has the highest spiking point please).
Personally, this is the thing I’m most curious about. I have no idea, why in 2017? So it's a 3 years journey to 2020 Olympic? Why Coach Washijou said the limit is 2 years? So does it mean Hinata will transfer back to Japan after 2 years in Rio? Oh my, Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, and Yachi went to the same university is adorable.
Okay, so when did U-19 match happen? Would we get a flashback about this? After so many build-ups and introductions, we should at least get a flashback, yes? Oh, and this is connected with my (until now) last point:
Idk if people noticed this, but in chapter 369, Kageyama and Hinata weren’t shown in the panel when the new Karasuno team was training/running. Where were they? Were they invited in the Dream Team match that always happens after Nationals? I know that there’s a Dream Team match consisted of 52 hand-picked players divided into 4 teams after Spring Nationals, one of the members in each team is a middle schooler. Were Kageyama and Hinata there? Or maybe they went to U-19 championship? Maybe I was just looking too deep into it, lmao.

this season was kind of whack, but at least we had Eizouken
Heya Camp is just kind of a lazy reminder that Yuru Camp exists, and will continue to exist in the future. You remember these characters?? OK good, just making sure. That said, did I immediately feel the tension release in my entire body when I heard the OST? Duh. Did I sing “it’s coffee time” to the ending not knowing these were the incorrect lyrics? The entire time.
I don’t know what to do with Isekai Quartet because like, objectively, I should hate it. I do not enjoy like 2.5 of the shows involved, and the addition of Shield Hero was not a welcome one. Turns out it doesn’t matter anyway because it was just Isekai Quartet and also Naofumi is Sometimes Scowling in the Background and that’s about as much of him as I want to see anyway. And yet? I do enjoy this Disney Channel Original Crossover. There’s something inherently fun about watching these characters from disparate shows interact with each other, and no matter what the original stakes were in their respective series, they’re all just doing homework and getting part time jobs and that shit’s funny when a big skeleton man is doing it.
After its first episode, Asteroid in Love was kind of a slog. This is your typical seasonal CGDGT show, and apart from that, I really can’t think of anything to say about it. I didn’t learn anything about the Extremely Niche Topic these girls are doing, and it wasn’t even that gay. Disappointing.
I was really looking forward to Toilet Bound Hanako-kun because I am a big fan of the source material, but I was pretty let down by this adaptation. It seems that they prioritized the art style and the color scheme above everything else, but that essentially just meant the entire project ended up being colored manga panels. I wanted to see them move around! There was not a single moment of animation that justified it being an anime. You might as well have been watching a PowerPoint. I can’t think of anything nice to say. Let’s move on.
Bofuri is my power fantasy. I want to play a video game so cluelessly I break it into tiny pieces and bumble into being the most powerful player in the world’s nicest MMORPG. Maple turns powercreep into powersprint. What Bofuri lacks in character development or plot, it makes up for in outrageous Maple feats. She holds the entire world in the palm of her hand and she doesn’t even know it. She named her OP pet turtle Syrup and then turned into an alien abomination unknown to the world and went on a killing rampage. This anime was Maple Crossing Online. Love you, Maple. Wreck shit, Maple.
If My Favorite Idol Got Into Budokan, I Would Die walks a thin line and what separates it from being a slobbering idol otaku engine preaching how Cool it is to Be an Otaku and an Idol Show Watamote is the fact that Eripiyo is a girl. That’s it. If you took her and replaced her with your average Joe Schmoe-san, this show would be insufferably creepy. Every time I was waiting for it to topple over, Jenga-like, it managed to right itself and straddle the tightrope. It’s not a particularly subtle piece of media, nor does it do what I was hoping it would do and engage in any sort of conversation about the obsessive nature of idol otakudom, but you know what it does a good job of doing? Portraying being an idol as a job. Just some adults putting on underground shows and selling the same CD of like two songs over and over again. I was also hoping it would address what happened to Eripiyo, maybe talk about why at the beginning she’s dressed like an office worker and apparently gives that all up to follow this kinda-shitty idol group, why this fanatic escapism is preferable, or even maybe address how gay it is? Not in the cards, though. Honestly Budokan was, despite itself, pretty enjoyable? There are some great background lesbians. Also can we talk about how consistently good the production values were on this show? Why did this have such great dance sequences? Why did this look better than Love “Has More Money Than God” Live? Actually no I take everything back this show was kind of just Idol Otaku Watamote
Hey, let’s talk about the other idol show airing this season: the completely unhinged 22/7. This show is Whack. This show operates on an entire different plane of reality. I know nothing about the actual band, so I came into this blind and oh my god. Hey guys, the plot of 22/7 is that a Wall tells some girls to form an idol unit.  A sentient Wall whose orders absolutely must be followed. Why? Dunno! What happens if you don’t follow its orders? Never elaborated on. (Actually, is this a reference to Pink Floyd? I have no fucking clue.) In any case these eight girls, summoned by a letter from the Wall, are all invited to become an idol group, and then they’re magically an idol group. It’s unclear how they become successful, how they book gigs, who’s keeping the lights on at the agency, how they’re getting paid, who HR is, how their gorilla man agent found this Wall and determined that all its directives Must Be Followed, but shit, man. What follows in 22/7 is a one-member-per-episode serial that quite frankly stumbles far more often than it succeeds. One girl’s grandma died and that’s why she came to Japan. One girl had a traumatizing experience where she got lost in the woods for a week and it broke her family apart and now things just suck forever. These things are equal. One poor girl’s entire episode was about how she didn’t want to put on a bathing suit for a photo shoot and how uncomfortable she felt about it, but in the end she was made to apologize for dragging her feet for so long and takes her photo for a pin up. Yuck. Gross. Bad. The only valid girl is Jun, end of discussion. None of this even holds a candle to the finale-- wherein the girls are directed by the Wall to disband, and, defying an order for the first time, the girls return to their agency and throw shit at the Wall until it breaks down. It’s revealed that the Wall isn’t supernatural-- behind it are tv monitors, photos of the girls as children, records of their activities. A person or people are behind this. Why??? Are they being groomed?? Is the Wall a metaphor for the Industry? I’m so concerned. The girls aren’t, though, because after a little side eyeing, they ascend a staircase and wow! A Stage! Our fans are all here for our reunion tour! And then they’re fine and I guess their idol group is back together or something? Did I mention the stage where they perform? It’s at a zoo. I can’t tell if this is the most scathing condemnation of idol culture I’ve ever watched or just completely oblivious. The characters don’t engage in any sort of thought about what they’re being put through, but they are performing their final song, the lyrics of which are about how life is just too hard to keep on living, at a zoo and I don’t think you can have that sort of thing happen unless you’re trying to make a point. Right??? RIGHT?!? Dance and sing, monkeys.
Smile Down the Runway was another show completely divorced from reality. So you got your main character, Chiyuki, whose thing is that she’s Too Short to Be a Model at her father’s very prestigious modeling agency. Which, like, is valid! Let’s see some variation in the modeling industry. Let’s shake it up. Let’s lead the charge for alternative models with bodies outside of the very narrow requirements of the fashion industry. What’s that, Chiyuki? You have no interest in that? You want to be a Hypermodel? I don’t know what that shit is, I think you made it up. Our other protagonist is Ikuto, the destitute, put upon, bobcut boy with a dying mother and 3 younger siblings who is trying to pursue his dream of becoming a fashion designer. Are you beginning to sense the problem here? There is a fundamental imbalance in the presentation of these characters’ goals and situations. Also? Emotions are at an eleven, always. Characters are always acting as if they’ve just seen someone get murdered in front of their eyes even when it’s like. There’s a messed up seam. They are constantly being mortified, crushed, and having their dreams ripped away. One time, two different assholes offered Ikuto magical mom-fixing blood money when he was struggling to come up with funds to pay off his medical debt at the cost of giving up his spot in the fashion show. Wildin’
Haikyuu didn’t exactly come in like a lion, but I’m sure it’ll be more organic upon rewatching. We were laying the groundwork for much of this season so I’m expecting it to payoff later, but the beginning definitely lagged. Every time Haikyuu hints at a women’s volleyball tournament, I want a volleyball anime with girls. Man, those ten minutes we got with Kiyoko? Those were great.
I don’t have too much to say about Somali and Forest Spirit. Abe’s “Make Children” agenda feels at least a little more like a narrative choice in this anime, and I enjoyed Somali and the Golem’s relationship and their travels were in equal turns harrowing and heartwarming. And I did tear up at the end so you got me there, anime.
In/Spectre has some balls being an anime. It’s existed as a light novel and a manga and those are both superior mediums for it because let’s put all our cards on the table here-- In/Spectre is a show about talking. Five whole entire episodes take place in a car. The finale is winning an argument in an anonymous 4chan chatroom. That said, I have such a fondness for In/Spectre. I think Kotoko rocks. I think a show willing to do nothing but talk at you for two hours is badass. Sitting through this anime is like watching a podcast. I think the show engages in some great dialogue about human nature and how we prefer stories that are theatrical, narratively-driven, and have a logical cause-and-effect, instead of the truth, which is more often than not grim, and disappointing, and illogical. I like that Kotokos only function, in-story and out of it, is to bullshit so hard she invents alternate realities. Anyway In/Spectre is good.
There’s no praise I can lavish on Eizouken that hasn’t already been said. It’s powerful, it’s strange, it’s energetic, and it’s packaged with such love. It’s repurposed the CGDCT template into something deeply affecting. It’s an anime for people who love animation.  I hope everyone watches Eizouken.

Sometimes I feel really sad that I don't have any people I know in real life to talk about Haikyuu with
A lot of the time it's just me feeling genuinely upset that my friends don't understand the full extent of my love for it
I don't wanna get sappy and all about what is basically a fictional set of characters playing volleyball, but I really can't help it, honestly
Sure, there's something so appealing about watching a show that's usually down to earth and feels like it could be real, it's nice to not have to suspend disbelief to major extents just to enjoy it, but it's also just something that I honestly think could cheer me up even on the worst day of my life. It's not like I have been watching it for many years, it's only been like 2 or so, but there's something deeply comforting about it. It's made me cry and laugh and everything, but even when it makes me sad I always end up coming back to it. I know it's sometimes really cringy when I never stop calling any of them my children and such, but the characters are just written so well I honestly feel so incredibly protective and attached to all of them. And I mean literally all of them.
Like, Furudate didn't need to bring Kouji and Izumi back, it's not like they had a major point past episode/chapter one. This is the first show I watched that fully recognised the importance of characters there just to be characters and to be realistic and to simply be kids. They don't need to have a big, revolutionary reason to reappear, they can just be there because sometimes people do things because they want to and not because it's going to massively influence their life. It's the same with every team who we see for just one episode. They didn't absolutely need arcs and backstories, a lot of shows I've seen gave the bare minimum to those types of characters, and usually only the main rivals get any plot at all really. But Furudate really seems to understand that characters drive the plot, yes, but they don't all need to constantly be kept on their toes to be lovable and important to the story. Knowing when to use the cast as tools to further the plot and when to include them just because they're people who are still a part of the other characters' lives is such a key part to creating an enjoyable story that drags me in and makes me care.
The quality of character writing in this show is one only rivalled by fullmetal alchemist and considering how much I will praise the hell out of that series and its characters, that's saying so, so much
I know nobody ever has a responsibility to watch something because somebody recommended, but occasionally I just really want to have a verbal freakout with someone who isn't either myself alone in my room or somebody who's either already told me to shut up or is very clearly on the verge because they don't care about it
I love talking with people on here, I just really, really, really wish I sometimes had people who actually would respond to my physical excitement with interest as opposed to me feeling like I'm just being a bother. It's nice to physically freak out occasionally, but it's hard when nobody gives a crap what you are talking about or that you care so much I guess
