Hi mommies!
I’ve been doing some research on Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and wanted to share my thoughts on it.
Abraham Maslow was a famous American psychologist who stressed the importance of focusing on the positive qualities in people. The five levels of the hierarchy of needs are the needs of physiological, safety, love & belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. If you are like me and want to have a better understanding of your child’s behavior, as well as learn how to deal with it effectively, then this article is a must-read for you. Feel free to do some research of your own, but I wanted to share my think piece on this subject. Not only do I yearn to understand my kids, but I also feel that it is very important to know how to correct and deal with certain behaviors in a way that won’t hurt my child’s self-esteem or stunt their emotional growth and development.
All five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are very important to your child’s development. Since I’ve been trying to break generational curses and raise my children to be good adults, I thought I’d share some information/thoughts with you all as well. My goal is to encourage healthy parenting, so I invite you to read this article with hopes that you gain something from it.
According to Maslow’s pyramid of needs, physiological and safety needs are the foundation that forms the BASE of needs for every human being, regardless of age. I feel that these two stages both work with each other to satisfy the basic needs a child has to have in order to survive. Without the basic needs of physiology, the safety needs are already threatened. Lack of access to food, water, air, and other physiological requirements can negatively impact a person’s mental, physical and emotional health. Once the physiological needs are fulfilled, the safety and security of a child’s physical and emotional well being are satisfied soon after.
When it comes to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the need for love & belongingness made me recognize how important the social needs of a child is when it comes to their development. I honestly think the lack of these social needs can increase the risk of speech delays. After giving birth to Saint, I experienced lots of changes within a few months postpartum; moving out of his dads house into our own house, having to isolate myself due to Covid-19 restrictions, and facing transportation challenges. It was an extremely difficult period for me, but I tried my hardest not to let it affect my son. I succeeded at not allowing my storm to get him wet, but there were a few things that was out of my control. Not being able to get my son in daycare along with not being able to gather with family and friends due to the Covid-19 restrictions affected the both of us. Of course I would read and sing to my baby, but it only did so much. I noticed a regression in his speech and I honestly think it was due to lack of socialism. Apart from family, we became very isolated; by my baby not being around other kids, it stunted his speech growth and development. This is why school and daycare can be healthy for early childhood development, and having family or friend gatherings is not just emotionally satisfying, but very important to a child’s development and emotional well being.
The esteem needs in a child can’t be met until the physiological needs are fulfilled. When a child is surrounded with love and support from others, they feel better about life in general. Positive attention and encouragement from the people around them promotes a sense of self confidence; it can help them learn to love themselves and be accepted for who they are. Being mindful of the company you keep is vital for your children’s emotional well-being. It is your responsibility to limit access to anyone that may hinder it.
The last stage in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is self-actualization. Progressing through each stage reveals the interconnectedness of needs; satisfaction in one stage often depends on the fulfillment of the previous stage. Without a high self-esteem, children may struggle to reach their full potential; it is highly unlikely that they will see themselves as capable. It’s important for a child to be constantly validated and assured that they can do anything they put their minds to; giving them words of encouragement - whether they fail or succeed - is very important. If you fail to encourage your child to recognize their potential and push them to be better than they were yesterday, then they may never harness the drive to explore all the possibilities available to them today.

Enjoyed some #sketchbook time this afternoon in the sunshine researching my pathway project #adistanceformsaroundourbodies , and had a wee visitor drop by as I was playing around with my #collage pieces. This piece was a response to my feelings of joy and relief to reconnect with our band last night and experience the energy of sharing space with other musicians and creating music together again after six months apart. Not all #creativepractice can be done in isolation- we need #humanconnection to #thriveandsurvive .Collage pieces taken from an @ioshofficial Safety & Health Practitioner magazine- #recycling to convey a different #safety message about our #mentalhealth need for #socialcontact . #glastonburymusician , #glastonburyartist , #mixedmediaart , #maslowshierarchyofneeds , #grasshopper https://www.instagram.com/p/CFFU99JlEnt/?igshid=quh4lnkx1oxj

#Repost @realdepressionproject (@get_repost) ・・・ 💚We are a mental health page that focuses on depression - but when there are societal issues like systemic racism then we feel it is essential to use this platform to raise awareness for this - as we’ve shown in a previous post, this has a hugely negative impact on mental health (amongst many other things) 💚There are many theories / ways to understand racism - sociologically, politically, legally etc. but it is also important to psychologically understand this too . 💚Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a great tool for this - many focus on it at an “individual” level, but it is essential to recognise: 1️⃣There are differences between INDIVIDUALS in their opportunity to get their needs met 2️⃣There are differences between COMMUNITIES in their opportunities to get their needs met 3️⃣Not only does your upbringing influence this, but your family and community history influences this . 💚We hope this is another resource from a psychological perspective to help understand #systemicracism . 💚As always, we send much love to all of you, especially during this time . . . . . . . . #blacklivesmatter #blacklivesmatter✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 #racism #discrimination #racisminamerica #fuckracism #stopracism #mentalhealthmatters #maslowshierarchyofneeds #stopdiscrimination #mentalhealth #antiracism #noracism #breakthestigma #notorscism #fightracism #equality #equalityforall #strongertogether #equalitycantwait #generationaltrauma #ptsd #cptsd #trauma #depression #anxiety https://www.instagram.com/p/CBdjX7FslA8/?igshid=1kttansjaplw5

Love us a complex bio-emotional phenomenon that signifies care and need.
This one is a simple statement. Which means it works well in this game.
I could ask for the definition of “complex” and “care” as those could be subjective experiences: and are crucial to this definition.
...but doing so would destroy the simplicity of the statement: and I’m currently admiring that.
Tumblr media
However, I will take needs literally.
Because under “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” we see love is a concept within the word ‘need’ meaning this definition uses love to define itself. It’s recursive.
The quick fix is to change ‘need’ to ‘belonging.’
