Storm walked along the nearly empty street, Malice in tow with her as she went about her daily errands. It had been nearly 6 months since she had returned home from Devildom, and while the adjustment came eventually, she longed to be back there- surrounded by her found family. It was made even worse by the fact that she was having a particularly rough day, and had just gotten off two subsequent phone calls- one with Mammon, and one with her father immediately after.
Storm hadn’t really connected the improvements in her self-esteem after being around those who loved her unconditionally until she had to again interact with her father, who berated her for “up and leaving” without so much as a notice of where she was and when she would be returning. She tried to reason with him, as she was nearly a 27-year-old woman who did not need her every move tracked, but he insisted that it was for her safety. She could scoff at the notion, knowing that he hadn’t cared about her safety when she was pushed out the window two years ago by her boyfriend. He even threw a fit about helping her pay for the medical bills- which she ended up going into debt to pay for most of it herself. The entire phone call with him today was no different- deciding to scold her for having not called him yet this week, and making comments about her inability to lose weight since returning from her “exchange program.”
Storm sighed, shaking the irritation from the interaction from her head. She had really almost forgotten what it was like to not experience this every day. And to have that phone call follow such a pleasant one with Mammon really just drained her ability to remain jovial for the remainder of the day.
Just as she rounded the corner to the pharmacy, she ran face first into a man moving the opposite direction. She fell backward with a yelp, Malice immediately moving to shield her from potential danger. Storm looked up, squinting in the bright sun, only to see a familiar silver-haired man hovering over her despite Malice’s growls.
“Easy now, buddy. I just want to talk to Storm for a minute.” Solomon attempted to reach out to pet Malice, who snapped at his hand. Solomon jerked his away before the large dog’s jaws closed on his digits and taking a large step back. He found himself amazed that the large beast was something Storm called a pet, but he was soon chuckling at the fact that she and Lucifer were so similar in that way.
Storm whistled, calming Malice and giving him signals to sit and remain docile. She slowly raised herself from the ground, wincing at the pain from the lingering back injury, but greeting Solomon with a genuine smile.
“Good to see you again, Dumbledore.” She mocked moving to give him a gentle hug.
He laughed, returning the gesture. “It’s good to see you too, Little Red.”
Storm playfully pushed him away, laughing along with him. “What brings you here? I wouldn’t pin you down as someone who enjoyed the fall foliage of the Midwest.”
Solomon smirked. “Isn’t it obvious? I came to find you, Storm.”
Storm blinked, shaking her head in confusion. “Me..? Why?”
“I wanted to catch up with you is all. Were you busy? Do you mind if we chat?”
Storm nodded, shocked by his sudden appearance after the bare-bones communication with him since her first month back in the human world. Signaling for Malice to stand walk at her side, Solomon accompanied her on her errands. The dog eyed him suspiciously as he talked, seemingly untrusting of the sorcerer.
“It certainly has been awhile since we walked around somewhere together like this...” Solomon smiled as Storm retrieved her medications from the pharmacist, carefully putting them into her purse. “Do you miss it? The Devildom, I mean.”
Storm glanced at him, trying (and failing) to hide the sadness in her expression. “Yeah...I do. I think about it every day.”
Solomon nodded sadly, knowing only bits of Storm’s loneliness in the human world from their limited interactions. He held the door open for Storm and Malice, gesturing to a small Café across the street. They sat behind a small cove of birch trees, shielding the sun and allowing Malice to cool down from the walking she had done already that day. They both ordered the fall special- two cups of Wild Rice soup with fresh sour-dough bread and cider- before turning their attention back to the bustling lake-shore shopping center.
“You know, I was actually talking to Diavolo the other day.” Solomon finally spoke, breaking the silence between them.
“Oh?” Storm mused, gaze fixated on a small pile of orange leaves, rolling along the cobblestone sidewalk in the breeze.
"He said the brothers have been in quite a somber mood since you left.”
“Oh...is that so?”
“Yes- apparently even Lucifer has been isolating more than usual in his office, despite his productivity being at an all-time low.” Solomon smirked as Storm snapped her attention toward him.
“R-r-really?” She stuttered, cursing herself silently for the obvious nervousness her stutter always displayed. “I-I mean, it’s just so un-unusual for him to avoid work...”
Solomon nodded. “It is indeed, but-”
Their food arrived, interrupting Solomon’s thought. He let Storm take a few bites before continuing on, stirring his soup idlily with his spoon.
“Anyway...That’s why Diavolo thinks maybe you should come back for a visit soon.”
Storm paused the rim of her glass on her lips, shifting her eyes to meet Solomon’s. “W-what?”
Solomon could only smile, confirming to Storm what she had heard. She nearly dropped her glass in shock, excitement bubbling within her as she questioned everything Diavolo had said to him. She couldn’t believe she would be going back! And on today of all days? What would she do with Malice? Would she be able to pack? So many questions flew past her lips that Solomon had to stop her and remind her to take a breath.
“Easy now, Storm.” He chuckled, finishing off his cider and tossing his napkin on his plate. “Barbatos will go to your apartment later to gather what you need- and you already have Malice, so why not bring him along this time? We could go right now if you really wanted...”
“-and now, with all of the extra money saved from reducing the budget for housing of the exchange students, we have more to cover for the festivities upcoming. Now we will move onto item 3B. Lord Diavolo, you have the floor.” Lucifer scribbled some notes onto the parchment in front of him before turning his attention to the demon lord.
“Thank you.” Diavolo smiled warmly, standing to face the rest of the student council. “All right, next I’d like to discuss guidelines for how to proceed when a witches’ sabbath requests a summoning without having submitted an application in advance...”
Mammon sighs in annoyance from his seat in the council chambers, mumbling about having to end his phone call with Storm early. Soon enough, the floor was alive with chatter, interrupting Diavolo’s item to discuss on the agenda. Lucifer grew red under the collar, anger bubbling up at his brother’s blatant disrespect for the future king.
“Mammon...” Lucifer growls. “You weren’t listening to anything Diavolo said just now, were you?”
Mammon gulps, realizing his mistake at speaking his thoughts out loud far too late.
“Honestly, I can’t believe that-”
Before Lucifer could even finish his thought, a portal opens overhead. Through it falls a discombobulated Storm, shrieking as she careens toward the ground. Fortunately for her, she lands on top of Satan, with her trusted dog clasped tightly in her arms like a gigantic baby. Satan yelps in pain as he topples out of his chair, doing his best to prevent any harm from coming to Storm.
Lucifer nearly leaps from his chair at the sight, shocked to see the familiar mess of fire-red hair and the unfamiliar large dog topple his brother. Solomon lands in the center of the room gracefully, dusting his clothes off before turning to where Storm had landed.
“Whoops. Sorry about that, Storm.” He chuckles. “I really should have warned you to be careful when you land- especially with that brute of yours.”
The dog growls in response to Solomon’s words, rolling off of Storm and shaking himself off from the magic remnants that stuck to his thick fur from the portal.
“Storm..?! Solomon..?” Lucifer can hardly believe his eyes, but cant even get his question in before his brothers come alive with excitement.
“AAHHHHHHH! Is this really...are you really..?!” Leviathan wails, Followed by Asmo’s gleeful screaming.
“Ha! I knew you missed me, but THIS is just crazy!” Mammon laughs, trying to push his brothers out of the way to make it to where she lay on top of Satan, groaning in pain at the ache caused to her back. Malice growls and spits in response, causing the 3 brothers to stop dead in their tracks. Mammon hides behind Levi, pushing the screaming brother ahead of him to face what he believed to a monster standing in front of Storm like a mother bear protecting its cub.
“Storm...” Satan groaned as she finally pulled herself off of him, hushing Malice’s need to be protective and ordering him to sit. “...do you want to tell me why you just appeared out of thin air and landed on my head?”
Storm finally brushed her hair back from her eyes so she could get a glimpse of the others around her. “Uh...well I suppose gravity had something to do with it.”
Satan blinks at her for a moment, unsure of how to respond. He finds himself blushing, murmuring something to himself that she couldn’t quite understand before making his voice audible again. “Well, I suppose you couldn’t help it.”
Belphie rolls his eyes approaching cautiously. “Aha. Well thats great and all, but what the hell is that...thing?” He points to Malice, eliciting a soft rumbling growl from the dogs throat.
Storm hushes the dog, who obeys the command immediately. She sighs, turning to Belphie. “Well, I suppose you didn’t know this, but the others know that in the human world, I have a service dog who didn’t come with me last time...so-”
“Wait! This is your dog?” Asmo’s eyes light up, squishing his own cheeks in glee. “He’s so much bigger than I thought, but wow he is the cutest thing!”
You smile, ruffling the fur on Malice’s head. “I told you guys he was a Bernese Mountain Hound. I figured context for the name would tell you that he was pretty big.”
“Well I’ll be...Storm...It really is you!” Diavolo chuckled heartily, slapping Lucifer on the back with glee. “Look at that, She’s come back to us! And with such perfect timing!”
Lucifer stumbles a bit from the force of Diavolo’s friendly smack. He straightens himself and throws a glare to Diavolo
Diavolo lets out another hearty laugh at Lucifer’s scowl. “What are you doing back so soon? I hope you didn’t perform some unsavory ritual to get yourself back here.”
Storm blushes, picking at the skin of her hands. “W-well, Solomon said that you I should visit and- uh- uh-” She pauses, seeing Lucifer’s eyes lock onto her. He looks her up and down and she finds herself frozen under his gaze.
“You seem to be doing well...I’m glad.” He murmurs, smiling politely at her. “But honestly, Storm. You could have at least informed us you were coming!”
“I’m sorry...I didn’t plan this out...I just missed you all so much.” She licks her lips nervously, meeting his intense ruby eyes. He raises his eyebrow slightly, ready to offer a response before she is once again swarmed by Lucifer’s brothers. They gather around her, offering their joy over her sudden return home, and asking tons of questions about her stay.
For how long was she staying? Where at? Presumably the House of Lamentation, but would it be In her old room? What about the other exchange students in the HOL though?
“Whoa, wait a minute...” Storm shifted her eyes between the brothers after the last question was uttered. “Other...exchange students?”
Diavolo grinned mischievously. "Well, I suppose this warrants an explanation, doesn't it?"
