Bessie Stringfield (born Betsy Beatrice White; 1911 or 1912 – February 16, 1993), also known as the "Motorcycle Queen of Miami", was an American motorcyclist who was the first African-American woman to ride across the United States solo, and was one of the few civilian motorcycle dispatch riders for the US Army during World War II. Credited with breaking down barriers for both women and African-American motorcyclists, Stringfield was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The award bestowed by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) for "Superior Achievement by a Female Motorcyclist" is named in her honor.

It was known as the Daimler Reitwagen (Daimler Riding Car), and patented on August 29, 1885. For good measure, here are photographs of Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900) and Wilhelm Maybach (1846-1929), respectively:

This same duo is also known for co-inventing the first practical, four-wheeled automobile, the following year, in 1886, known as the Daimler Motorized Carriage:

Whether or not one considers this the first true automobile depends upon whether or not one considers Karl Benz's 1885 motorized tricycle (first driven by Bertha Benz, his wife), practical up to a point, to count: If so, precedent goes to Benz.

If, however, one requires four wheels, the design of nearly all subsequent automobiles, then precedence goes, as with the motorcycle, to Daimler and Maybach.
