“My journey has been very free. I’ve been able to work in different parts of the world and on projects that don’t necessarily obey a typical journey of a person that wants to be famous or work in film. I want young actors to know you don’t have to follow a set line to have a career. Sometimes the line is drawn for actors from the English language. But in my case I can reinvent myself all the time.” — Gael García Bernal (Total Film, 07/2021)
Also: Uruguay (El ojo en la nuca, 2001), Sweden & Thailand (Mammoth 2010), Canada (Blindness 2008, Zoom 2015), Brazil (El pasado 2007, Zoom 2015), Serbia (Zalet), Germany (Herzog's Salt&Fire 2016), Cuba (Wasp Network, 2019), Dominican Republic (Old, 2021)

If you come from a dysfunctional family, you may have promised yourself something like...
• "I will not end up like my mom."
• "My kids will not feel the way I did growing up."
• "I will never be with someone like my dad."
• "My marriage will be nothing like my parents'."
• "'Il never turn into the kind of parent I had."
• "When I get out, my house will feel like a home."

heal yourself, but don't rush
help people, but have boundaries
love others, but don't let them harm you
love yourself, but don't become egotistical
stay informed, but don't overwhelm yourself
embrace change, but keep pursuing your goals

you know when the structure of a piece of media is meant to elicit a specific audience reaction and then that reaction itself becomes a device of the narrative working from the outside to further the story’s themes through the anticipated thoughts & emotions of the audience. god yes
#personal log#media#bc i was thinking abt this earlier with ethel cain’s new album & how the 2nd to last song Feels like an ending song but#after it’s over there’s still#one more song to go; and how that in itself is reflective of the story being told of the character ethel dying but her soul continuing to#live on in heaven as well as her body on earth still being acted upon (cannibalization) & basically like. what you think is the end isn’t#actually the end.#& i just watched the film ‘the loneliest planet’ and the ending was very abrupt & there wasn’t exactly resolution#which mirrors the conflict/reaction to The Incident in the film#and the way that the characters have to grapple with how it shatters what they thought they knew#either about themselves or about the other#& how that shattering might feel impossible; like the end to something and they have no idea how to continue on living life afterwards#but they have to#life goes on; the film doesn’t have a concrete resolution/ending because neither do their emotional journeys#when the credits roll u can feel in your chest how life still stretches out before them & the agonizing reality of having to continue.#bc reality isn’t like a movie where the conflict gets wrapped up all pretty at the end & everything’s fine you know? and like i don’t#believe that’s a pessimistic take i think it’s just the way things are and it can be understood in a pessimistic way but can also be#accepted & embraced as part of life’s beauty#things keep going and it’s a blessing that they do
