sanrio fan red flags: if they refuse to accept cinnamoroll as a boy and a puppy. “to me cinnamoroll will always be a girl bunny idc!!!” :/ imagine misgendering something as precious as cinnamoroll. imagine misgendering, period. what happened to love and friendship and acceptance? apparently we don’t live laugh love when someone doesn’t fit within the binary of what you perceive them as. yes cinna is a fictional character. so imagine this person’s reaction with a real person comes out as trans. just saying.

Hey y’all, life is a journey. Gender is a construct. And I’ve been feeling this for a few months, but I’m a she/her woman. I will always have unwavering love and support for my non-binary siblings, but they/them does not feel like me.
I don’t need anyone to edit their past posts or police folks who still use it. Because it doesn’t hurt me to be called they/them. It just doesn’t fit.
My perception of myself is constantly growing and shifting, but I feel I am getting much closer each day to my core quinntessence.
Yesterday I was getting my hormone levels checked in a clinic, and my nurse exclaimed, “Quinn Hills! That’s a cool name.”
You know what? It is. I’m really proud of who I am and who I’m becoming.
Take care of yourself and love yourself. I’m trying to.
Listen to yourself and let yourself grow.
This isn’t even my final form.

What people need to understand is that when Crowley denies being kind, he is deliberately lying. He doesn’t actually think he’s evil—I don’t think Crowley really believes in ‘evil’ as a concept, at least when applied to people and not actions—but being seen as good is extraordinarily dangerous for him. He doesn’t allow Aziraphale or anyone else to say that he’s nice not because he thinks he isn’t, but because if he’s caught by Hell being anything less than the kind of demon who would gleefully incite the Spanish Inquisition, he’s dragged down to the Pit for a few decades. It’s self-defense, not self-loathing. This season, when Gabriel tells him he’s really nice, he sputters over it for a bit and then says, “Well, nobody would believe you anyway,” which I think is a sign that he’s recovering a bit from the power that Hell had over him before the end of S1.
Crowley’s confidence in his own identity is actually pretty strong, especially when compared to Aziraphale. Crowley knows who he is, and he’s comfortable with it. Where he struggles much more is how he can fit into the binary world of Heaven and Hell. He does have a couple of scenes where he is angsting over being a demon, yes, but I think that’s much less “I wish I could be Good like an angel” and much more “hey, hurting me and kicking me out for asking questions was BULLSHIT, and so is this entire system, actually.”
And to be fair, I think Crowley would genuinely object to the idea that he’s ‘good.’ As mentioned above, absolutes like good and evil make Crowley itch. He’s rude, and he makes peoples’ lives worse on purpose sometimes, and he loves pissing people off, and he’s also deeply compassionate and brave and loving. He makes the choice, every time, between helping and hurting, and that choice is more important to him than directives to do Good or Evil could ever be. And of course it is—above everything else, Crowley believes in self-determination, in thwarting a destiny that seems inevitable, in building beautiful things out of dust. He gave us the apple, didn’t he?
(But was it ever the apple? Or was it just the idea of choice, planted by a lonely serpent who didn’t want to see his new friend Eve boxed into the same prison of ideals as the angel on the wall?
Who can say.)
And that’s why Aziraphale’s offer is so repulsive to him. Crowley knows and likes who he is. Going back to Heaven wouldn’t allow him to ‘be good’ the way Aziraphale thinks it would. He’s been doing good the whole time—his way, and often in direct opposition to both Heaven and Hell. Aziraphale knows that—he’s not stupid—but Aziraphale is also a master of thinking multiple contradictory things at the same time, so he’s going to have to REALLY learn it in S3.

okay this has been going through my mind for days and I have to get my thoughts out before I explode
Disclaimer, this is not talking about a specific artist/person and would never condone or participate in anon hate or online bullying for any reason but especially this one.
I get why people are mad about Link being portrayed as this buff, hypermasculine, tall guy. I am too (again don’t fucking attack people over it though) and it seems like such an infuriating way to change the character just to fit into some ideal of hypermasculine attractiveness or to make a ship fall into a more hetero lense by making him a decent foot taller than whatever girl he’s being paired with.
The world of video games and action movies and every form of media ever is extremely saturated with male characters that are swole and manly and whatever other descriptors people are trying to push onto Link that don’t fit into his actual character. There are so many characters out there that already fit this male standard and having a clearly androgynous elf guy was like a breath of fresh air.
Link was literally designed to be a character whose lines on gender were blurred, ‘a girl with a masculine touch or a guy with a feminine touch’ so that anyone could project themselves onto him. His physical design in botw/totk was specifically made to be feminine enough to wear a certain outfit to pass as a woman (which includes a nearly mandatory cutscene where he puts on the clothes and blushes after being called pretty, like you have to be blind to think that its an experience that he doesn’t like at all) and in totk there are a bunch of outfits made for Link that are blatantly gnc, ones that are practically dresses, include nail polish and lipstick, you can even dye his hair bright and vivid colors and that’s half way to giving him new pronouns. The whole reason Linkle isn’t included in more mainline loz games was because her existence would force Link into a gender dichotomy, if there's a clearly female version of the main hero, that means the main hero has to be a man, and they would rather abandon a potential reoccurring character than make Link conform to a gender binary.
So pardon me when it feels disingenuous and even malicious for him to be morphed into these clear masculine ideals, where he towers over any female romantic partner (even when in canon he is regularly depicted as noticeably shorter than her) or even in m/m fanworks he’s really beefed up, perhaps to make the scene feel more gay or something.
Perhaps it’s because his more twink-y/ femboy body type is so heavily sexualized (though obviously when people are sculping abs on him it’s totally not because they’re horny about it) and that’s an issue in itself that bothers me. But it’s just so tiring to see one of the very few popular main characters who is short and feminine and androgynous be molded into just another bland muscle-headed action hero over and over and over again.
I’m not mad at the creators for portraying him differently than how I like him portrayed, I’m mad because we really do get so few characters like him in good popular media, and to be honest, I really like him the way that he is. I love that he’s tiny and has long hair and has the option to dress any way the player likes. It seems a little distasteful to make him taller than a female love interest just because that’s how straight couples have to be, there’s just never been a real straight couple where the guy is shorter than the girl, that’s just Impossible! I think part of the problem with talking about 18th century gender in a non binary way is that too many modern people conceptualise nonbinary as a distinct 3rd category with no overlap with man or women. While at face value the 18th century third gender might seem like a distinct 3rd category it isn’t really.
The third gender or the dubious gender was more an umbrella term for anyone who didn’t fit into the rigid roles of man or woman. For example Lady Mary Wortley Montagu famously commented that the world “consists of men, women, and Herveys". Lord Hervey was a member of the third gender but also he was a man. He lived as a man was understood by society to be a man. You might argue isn’t that just gender nonconformity? But isn’t gender nonconformity what defines the third gender in the first place?
So when I say you could understand d’Eon’s gender to be “amazon” that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a woman she was. “Amazon” is part of the 18th century concept of the third gender but also subset of women. When you understand that d’Eon fit into a particular social role inhabited by a minority of women, rather than trying to fit into the more commonly accepted role of woman, her and her gender presentation start to make sense in a way that is particular to the period.

What my experience of non-binarity means, to me. I’m non-binary, because when people only call me miss, I don’t feel good. When I’m only called a woman, I simply don’t, feel, good. There are expectations attached to this identity that I don’t relate to. If “woman” wasn’t attached to so much societal expectation that I don’t relate to, I wouldn’t give a damn. But I know what most people mean and perceive, when they see me as a woman, and it isn't accurate, it doesn't fit, it makes me want to crawl out of my own skin.
And heck, it’s okay to be a woman, it’s okay to be a girl. It just doesn’t sit right with me. Sometimes, rarely, it does. A certain aspect of feminity, anyway. My identity is too fluid for me to just stop at “I felt like a woman once or twice this month, so I guess that’s my gender forever.”. Being non-binary is a way to free myself from societal expectations of what I can be, of what I can do, of what I can feel. To get the fuck out of a box that has gotten me in a chokehold for a bloody long time.
When people call me sir, sometimes I feel good. When people call me mx, sometimes I feel good. When people call me mx, sir, AND miss, I feel truly understood, seen, and respected. I feel AWESOME. Because, in the end, it’s not so much the fact of being called “miss” that makes me feel bad. It’s the fact of ONLY being called miss.
At some point, I just gotta learn to embrace my inner chaos, and my identity is part of it. Sometimes I might feel more like one or the other, or the other, or the other, etc. Who knows. Not even me. It’s just so goddamn freeing, and so much more accurate to my perceived reality, to not be only ONE thing.
So, yeah. If you care about me, and/or want to respect me… You know what to do ! Mix it up. Make blunders too, as long as they’re well meant ! I’ll never get mad at anyone for messing up on something that I haven’t made clear, especially when it’s not even clear to me. Everything is fine as long as we’re all trying our best here. It'll all be fine, as long as we're doing our best to love each other- and care for our true, authentic selves.
Life is fucking short. If you can, be free. Even in secrecy, be proud. And always, be kind. Love on y'all. Take care of yourselves out there.

i wanna make a post abt my own personal hc for each of the characters sexualities and stuff because i think it’d be fun
also pls remember that these are my personal hc for these characters, if you have different ones that’s perfectly ok but pls respect other peoples opinions, thanks :)
with that being said:
steve: bisexual, he/him
robin: lesbian, demigirl, she/they
nancy: bisexual, she/her
eddie: gay, he/they (he’s not too bothered abt his gender, he isn’t cis, but they don’t really care to label it. “my gender is whatever tf i want, i’m me, i exist here, i’m metal asf, that’s all you need to know”)
will: gay, he/him
mike: bisexual, he/him
max: bisexual, demigirl, she/they
lucas: straight, he/him (speak valentina! ally!)
el: pan-romantic, asexual, non-binary, they/she (they were raised in a lab away from the rest of the world, they never really understood social norms, let alone fit in to them. being non-binary just feels right to her)
dustin: hetero-romantic, asexual, he/him
suzie: straight, she/her (while she grew up mormon, she is incredibly supportive and understanding, she’s a woman of science first, religion second. speak valentina! ally!)
jonathan: demi-pan-romantic, asexual, non-binary, he/they
argyle: pansexual, he/him but wouldn’t care if you used they/them (“gender is a social construct my guy! be who you are, ride the waves of gender until you land on an island full of your own personal happiness. life is short dude, have some fun, relax, eat some pineapple pizza”)
eden: bisexual, she/her
joyce: probably bi but doesn’t really know it, she/her (she used to kiss girls in high school, you can’t prove me wrong. specifically, i think her and karen wheeler used to make out behind the bleachers during gym. it’s a byers family tradition to like wheelers ig)
hopper: straight, he/him (a little confused, but supportive, he’d never judge his kids, or anyone of their friends. he may not fully get it but he tries. the party gets together once a week to try and explain lgbtqia+ topics to him. speak valentina! ally!)

At request of a mutual I am posting my incoherent ramblings abt this on Tumblr (some headcanon context: my Ness is non-binary, queer, and AuDHD, my Mike is transmasc, AroAce-spec, mlm, and autistic 😋😋😋)
SecurityWaiter/DreamTheory queerness is taking over my brain
Ness is someone who is so all consumingly queer. They are everything and they are nothing. They are a boygirl girlboy who is also a genderless being simply taking part in all the corners of the human experience. They are a butch lesbian, a twink, and every form of multisexual under the sun all at once. They’re gay and straight in every relationship. No matter how they dress, it is cross dressing. Everything about them is queer and they know it and love it and it’s everything
Mike on the other hand, is the experience of being nothing unless he has to be something. He doesn’t really experience attraction before Ness, and then with Ness, Ness becomes everything to him. With labels, he fits into whatever is most comfortable, but at the end of the day, he’s just him. He’s just a guy. Labels only exist for the sake of communication but if he could just exist without having expectations or explanations needed, he would enjoy that far more. He’s a man because it’s what he’s most comfortable with and practically speaking he fits just fine into that role, but he’s not a man in the way a cis man is a man, or in the way ANY other man is a man for that matter. But he’s also not a woman. But he still has experience with girlhood. It’s something that he’s spent so much time and energy getting away from, but he eventually realizes that it’s ok for him to have that. It’s HIS experience, anything can fit inside of it, and he doesn’t NEED to explain anything to anyone or simplify it into a couple words for the sake of what’s easy. He’s him, and that’s that.
Gender and sexuality aren’t things that they perfectly fit into and THATS OK. Ness LOVES it and they help Mike learn to embrace it. They are boyfriends and partners and girlfriends and soulmates and two halves of a whole. They see each other and become blind to the rest of the world. They are everything and they’re nothing and it’s AMAZING. They love every bit of each other and that’s all they need.
Some other general spewing because I have a lot of visual stuff in my head that I don’t know how to elaborate on so just have some key words ig lmao
Exploring each other’s bodies (/nsx or /sx that’s up to you ☝️☝️☝️)
Embracing each other
Gold scars
Heart eyes
In sync
Happy and scared tears
Gentle kisses
Tracing fingers
Saying I love you and truly meaning it
Biting their lips
Slow reveals and realizations
Learning what comfort is
Full laughter
Easy breaths
Only caring about each other’s opinions
Utter adoration
Ugh chat they mean everything to me like actually 💔💔💔

Dear OFMD,
I wasn’t sure who to address this to, at first. There are so many options, so many people instrumental in the creation of this show that means so much to me and so many others. David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Vico Ortiz, Alex Sherman, and the rest of the producers, directors, writers, cast and crew. I did try to list out everyone, but it took up the whole first page. My social media follows exploded when I began watching.
The thing is, I’ve never quite been comfortable in my skin. I knew something was off about my gender as early as 8, possibly earlier, but eight is when I remember actually thinking that I wasn’t a girl for the first time.
I wasn’t a boy, either, but it was the eighties, and I didn’t know the term non-binary, or that gender was as much a brain thing as a body thing. So I shoved it down, along with the thought that the kids at my school should hurry up and learn the lessons already so we could go onto the next thing and that I hated wearing dresses, except when I loved it.
And then, I just . . . didn’t think about gender for a long time. Not when trans people were the butt of all the jokes in the movies in the nineties, not when trans stories, real trans stories started getting told in the aughts.
Someone gave me the word agender, once, when I was curious and asked what might describe someone who felt neither man nor woman, and never had, and I went with that. I still go with that, or enby, whichever I’m comfortable with in the moment. I was forty. Thirty-two years of not even knowing I was looking for that word, and I was.
And then a year or so later, someone talked me into watching Our Flag Means Death.
I write. I’ve published. When you send a story out, you never know what other people are going to think of it, what symbolism they’re going to find, how they’re going to interpret this thing or that thing. So I don’t know if you realized when you finished filming the first season and sent it for edits, or finished the second season and watched us foam at the mouth for it, how the fans were going to react.
There are a lot more of us out in the world that don’t feel quite right in whatever gender box we’ve been put in than anyone realizes, I think. And I think a lot of us gender-weirdos are fans of this show.
It’s not just Stede, and his love for fine things. It’s Ed, with his hidden silk, and his softly admitting to “maybe” liking “a fine fabric.” It’s not just Jim being outed, and everyone going right back to normal after they figure out that that’s what Jim wants. It’s not even just Wee John’s wonderful performance as Calypso.
It’s also Wee John sitting down to sew and saying he used to sew dresses with his mom. It’s calling Izzy the ship’s “new unicorn” and it’s also Izzy wearing make up. It’s everyone wearing flowers.
It’s Spanish Jackie having nineteen husbands, and maybe some wives.
It’s a meme of any of the characters that’s just a screenshot and the word “gender” written across it.
It’s the concept of “assigned knives at birth”
And it’s the community that this show created to let us feel free to explore all of this. We can bounce ideas off of each other, we can explore new identities, and you - the cast, the crew, the writers of this show - you have given us a safe space to do so.
I’ve been on the outskirts of a lot of fan spaces. I’ve never wanted to step into them because at their core, they seemed so toxic and gatekept. I’ve never felt that from the fans here (we’re not perfect, and there are a lot of very angry arguments over things that I hope you never see).
So yeah, this is my love letter to Our Flag Means Death, the show that helped me figure out, at forty-three, that my gender is, well, me. And it doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s label.
Thank you for creating it.
Thank you for writing it.
Thank you for acting in it.
Jenn

Something to help understand/interpret my art, also lore dump (if you care):
Mae and Sage both are my sonas, Mae is my MAIN sona, she’s literally ME, and Sage represents an ASPECT of me.
Mae uses She/her pronouns and Sage uses He/him, they are both non-binary characters that represent different aspects of my gender experience. Mae represents the more physical gender experiences Ive had, and Sage represents more so what my gender is. (This is sort of hard to explain, Mae represents the experiences I’ve had in relation to my physical body that I was born with, and the experiences I’ve had in society and how society has interpreted me and my gender. She’s still accurate to my gender, but her design is more surface level and obvious. Sage on the other had, represents my gender experience at its CORE, and how I actually feel as an individual, despite my body. I feel like I am simply experiencing a feminine experience in some ways because of my body and how society sees me, but I don’t feel like who I am at my core can be put into any box, hence me being non-binary. I feel very much like I’m sort of playing a game and this is just the avatar I have, and that who I am is neither male nor female. I just happen to have more experiences in one regard because of how I was born. Sage is the aspect that cannot be boxed. He is both masculine and feminine, and also neither male or female. He’s just SAGE.) (this is also extremely personal to MY OWN gender experience so if you don’t relate to this don’t think to hard about it, this is literally how I interpret my own identity, it probably doesn’t make any sense to anyone else)
Back to Mae representing my more physical life experience, she carries a lot of my trauma and bad experiences. She represents every part of me that has ever been hurt.
Sage represents a part of me that is less in the earthly experience. If you know what a “higher self” is, that’s basically what Sage is in relation to Mae. He is an aspect of me, and therefore an aspect of Mae, they’re part of the same character. He acts as a sort of “guardian angel” who loves Mae more than anything and he would literally go any length for her. Representative of the innate love that I feel like everyone has for themself until society fucks us over and makes us hate ourselves.
Sage and Mae are NOT romantic towards each other (any art drawn of that is non-canon, sometimes I’m bored) , they are more like a queer-platonic relationship. I wouldn’t say they’re “just friends” because their lore and story and relationship is pretty complex and doesn’t fit that box for me.
Sage is an angel in canon, that takes a physical form which is the form I always draw, I’m working on drawing his true form for lore but I’m still designing it.
Sage is an angel of healing, which is why he’s so tender and gentle towards Mae and in general such a honey.
Sage is an angel of healing, and represents the higher self, but he also represents the shadow self (if you don’t know what that is, google is your friend). He carries the pain and trauma from Mae indirectly. This is why he has a darker color palette, since he represents Mae’s shadow (I actually am contemplating a few other alternate palettes for him , a crème color palette as well a blue one, as I work through the lore I’ll decide when those apply). He is NOT a dark angel or an evil angel. His character is multifaceted and complex, and his color palette just represents what I just explained. There are evil angels in my oc lore universe but their color palette doesn’t represent that bc I think that concept is overused, also I like being ironic. Sage having a darker palette is again, linked to his relation to Mae and the trauma he carries from her.
Even though Sage is small and sweet looking he is literally insanely powerful, like CRAZY strong
Sage being the shadow self, and also being so close and loving to Mae represents that our shadow self is not a part of us that is bad and needs to be pushed away, but actually a part of us that is just hurt and desperately needs love and healing.
I draw a lot of art of Mae and Sage embracing, either lovingly or during times of turmoil. I draw a lot of art of Mae being physically or mentally hurt and being comforted or embraced by Sage, Sage having different reactions situationally. A lot of the time, Mae is representing the physical effects of trauma, and Sage is the inner self mourning/crying/ suffering the trauma. Sort of like how you feel terrible for your child self for being mistreated, or how you feel bad for yourself because of the experiences you’ve had. It’s like a depiction of self pity, but also in a way, self love. It’s like holding yourself and crying for how the world has hurt you, and wishing better for yourself.
It’s symbolism✋

Luz & Gender
It’s no secret that I read/interpret Luz as not being cis, but I wanted to make a post about the elements in canon that support that idea.
I’ll mention one thing at the start though, and it’s that I don’t like when people use her design/appearance/gender non-conformity as “proof”. Dressing a certain way or having certain haircuts isn’t indicative of gender identity, someone can be very gender non-conforming while still being fully and completely cis.
I’d like to list some things I think are much better reasons for reading her as not cis/non-binary.
I) The Theme of Choices
Tumblr media
One of the themes in Luz’s story is how she feels like she has to make choices that she doesn’t really want to make - like choosing a single Track when she enrolls in Hexside, choosing which realm she will stay in, or choosing what her palisman will be - but ultimately discovers that she doesn’t have to choose, or can choose multiple things, like choosing all Tracks in Hexside and later all majors in college, being able to freely travel between the realms through the new portal, and carving an egg to let her palisman choose its own form, with that palisman then hatching as a snake-shifter who, while having a base form, isn’t bound to that form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This theme of not actually having to choose only one thing also reflects Luz’s neurodivergence, bisexuality, and gender non-conformity. And in a non-binary reading of her, it would also reflect her gender identity, not having to choose a single binary gender.
And this fits with any label, it could be non-binary, genderqueer, bigender, genderfluid (my personal headcanon), demigirl, pangender, etc. She can even use multiple labels, choosing more than one thing once again.
The rest of the points here are smaller things that I think hint at her gender identity not being cis, or that could be interpreted as such.
II) This book in Camila’s room:
Tumblr media
It’s titled “Life Ain’t Binary”, which might imply that either Luz, Vee or both are non-binary. The word choice feels deliberate, especially given that there’s another book titled “Parenting LGBTQ”, which we can see when Luz comes in:
Tumblr media
And underneath it is a book titled “Always My Child”, likely also on the topic of raising a queer kid.
(While making this post, I noticed that the first book actually says “LGRTQ”, which- Is this Disney censorship, a joke poking fun at censorship, or just a mistake?)
[Edit]: I’ve been told that “Life Isn’t Binary” is actually a real book! And the book is about both bisexuality and “non-binary gender experiences”. Bisexuality was my other interpretation of what the book could have been referencing, and turns out both of my interpretations were correct!
III) This outfit:
Tumblr media
The purple and white shirt + green pants combo looks very similar to the genderqueer flag.
Now, genderqueer doesn’t have to mean non-binary or trans, it’s an umbrella term that includes anyone who “queers” their gender, regardless of gender identity, and can be used for both binary (cis or trans) and non-binary people.
However, the label is sometimes used interchangeably with non-binary. It can be used both as a gender identity on its own and as an umbrella term.
IV) This moment from ‘Enchanting Grom Fright’:
Tumblr media
Luz called herself a bad boy.
V) The Egg
Tumblr media
In the trans community, an “egg” is used as a metaphor for people who haven’t realized they’re trans yet, and them finally realizing they are is referred to as “cracking their egg”. Even if the egg wasn’t intentionally written to reference that, it can still be read/interpreted as an allegory.
If there’s anything else you think adds to a not cis/non-binary reading of Luz, feel free to add on!

I am genderqueer but I am not non-binary.
I am a binary gender. That binary gender is male, and happens to also be genderqueer. Even if that “technically counts as being non-binary,” it doesn’t to me.
I am two genders at the same time, but I am not bi-gender.
I have two gender identities. They coexist at the same time and never change. I am always male and always genderqueer. However, I am not bi-gender. You might be scratching your head and wondering how that’s even possible. How can someone who’s two genders at once which never change not be bi-gender?
Because I’m not. The label just doesn’t fit me. I do not identity with the label bi-gender. I am not bi-gender, I am genderqueer. A genderqueer guy.
Although my gender fluctuates in intensity, I am not gender-flux.
My gender tends to be silly goofy and likes to fluctuate in how ‘intense’ it is. One day, I could be feeling 100% super manly man, boyly boy, and want only to be addressed using he/him/his, no matter what I look or dress like that day. Other days, I could feel a little more ‘disconnected’ from my manhood, and although I still love he/him pronouns, I might throw it/its into the mix too. (But never they/them.) You’re probably thinking that that sounds like the textbook definition of gender-flux. And it more or less is. But it’s not me. Even I don’t know why; I just don’t vibe with the label.
There are certain labels that, although they may “technically” describe someone, won’t fit them. In my opinion, gender should not be defined as what label “technically” fits. It should be defined as how the individual themself feels about it.
A binary trans person might identify as a label such non-binary, for instance, not because their gender itself is not binary, but maybe because they still like dressing in clothes traditionally associated with their birth sex, or because they don’t like being referred to as a woman or man and would rather just be called a person! Or even if they just like they way the label vibes with them and would rather use that instead or “trans man,” or “trans woman.”
Their gender could still be binary, but they are 100% allowed to refer to themselves as non-binary, for whatever reason they want.
If you want to use labels to describe your gender expression rather than identity itself, then that’s alright! You’re allowed, I promise. And if anyone tries to police your identity for no absolutely reason, just remember: it’s YOUR gender, it’s YOUR identity, and it’s NOT hurting anyone!

Something I find really challenging is the fact that i only started thinking about my gender identity after graduation high school. It’s been a year since I’ve been questioning my gender, and I finished high school a year and a half ago.
I feel as though I can’t fully identify as anything other than cis bc it’s taken me too long to figure out. I also feel like I express myself rather cisgendered as well. Like I am not masc in any way, but also not femme. Just me. Just a ‘girl’ presenting person, even tho I don’t believe I am a girl.
I also feel as though I’ll never be able to talk about my gender to anyone I know bc the second someone doubts me, I’ll just agree and be like, ‘you know what, it doesn’t matter’. Bc I don’t want to make it a big deal and I hate explaining myself.
I also feel like I doubt myself a lot.
I don’t know if any of this makes sense but I just needed to talk about it and your blog is the most safest space!
(Also, introducing myself as the Yellow anon as I’m always ranting and being an anon in your asks)
Hi Yellow!
Let me ask you something: I didn't start questioning my gender until after I graduated college. Does that make me less nonbinary? Did it take me too long to figure it out?
(I'm hoping you'll say no?)
Listen, I totally get that feeling. A lot of times, I feel like I wasted my teens being a 'girl' and trying to fit into the gender binary when I clearly don't.
But the thing is, this is when I figured it out. And this is when you figured it out. It doesn't make you any less of who you are.
As far as the way you present...gender identity and presentation are two different things. It's is completely okay to wear femme clothing and still identify as something other than a girl.
And listen, I get doubting yourself. It's so hard to stay true to yourself and your feelings, especially when people are doubting you. But remember that you are valid and important, and your feelings are real. Keep reminding yourself of that, and I'm here to remind you any time you need it!

Headcanon: Umbrella Academy
-The Umbrella Academy as Greek Gods (Klaus and Five)
Part 1
Klaus as Dionysus (Διώνυσος)
Tumblr media
I know you’re going to say that this one is obvious and easy but hopefully, I will blow your mind because you are not ready for the depth of my analysis for this one. So we will start by getting the obvious out of the way. Dionysus is mainly known for being the god of wine and madness. This, of course, fits perfectly well with our drug-addicted-hissing-at-a-ghost Klaus. We will talk more about madness a bit later, so let’s focus on wine for a minute. Dionysus is associated with wine as a drink but as well as everything around it such as viticulture and the consumption of wine. In Ancient Greece there were two main events, where wine was important, that were considered dionysiac: symposium and komos. Symposiums take place after dinner and are reserved for men. It’s a moment to drink wine and talk about poetry, politics and love. It is reserved for an elite group of people that are part of the aristocracy and is held in private. This is very reminiscent of Klaus’ time in 1960. While he turned away from drugs and alcohol, he did end up being the leader of a cult, a very rich and elite cult. He was honoured in a way that is similar to Dionysus during symposiums. As for the komos, it is a celebration held after symposiums. After everyone is properly drunk, the party takes to the streets and people go around knocking on doors and inviting themselves into other parties. There’s an amazing example in Plato’s Symposium if you want to check it out! And this, this is exactly like Klaus in season 1. From the moment we meet him, we understand that, at this point in his life, he is someone who thrives when he is high. He will transgress any social norms without any second thought. He wants to be partying all the time. I also want to mention that Dionysus is associated with music and dance, but a kind of music and dancing that is liberating and not so much intellectual. You see, Dionysus plays a kind of flute named the aulos. Since it is a flute, it is impossible for him to play and talk at the same time, he cannot teach through his music. This combined with madness gives a more liberating aspect to his music. Now, we’ve seen Klaus dance, more than once. While all the Hargreeves seem to have fun dancing, Klaus is out there having the best time. The Footloose scene, he’s giggling like a little girl. The one when Hazel and Cha-cha end up kidnapping him, it is pure chaos. He truly doesn’t care about how he looks and clearly just wants to have fun. Dionysus is all about that kind of freedom and liberation, there’s a whole cult dedicated to Dionysus Eleutherios, literally meaning Dionysus the Liberator.
Before moving on to madness and mania, it’s worth mentioning some of Dionysus’s characteristics. Dionysus is all about ambiguity. He is man and woman, Greek and foreigner, God and mortal. And so is Klaus! Klaus is man and woman. In season 3 he basically comes out as non-binary but even before that, we get to see him embrace his more feminine side. I do think however that there is a difference here. Dionysus’s ambiguity regarding his gender is often questioned. It is part of the plot of many Ancient Greek plays. However, Klaus’s gender identity never seems to be questioned, not by his siblings or anyone else for that matter. So even if he, just like Dionysus, doesn’t care about the way he presents himself, others’ reactions do differ. Dionysus is also Greek and foreigner. He is a Greek god for sure, but in most stories, he is described as coming from another country, often Lydia or Phyrgia, and coming back to Greece to impose his cult on some cities like Thebes. Klaus also presents this characteristic. There is no denying that he is part of the Umbrella Academy. However, he is often forgotten by his siblings and seems like he doesn’t truly belong among their ranks. In season 1, he literally gets kidnapped by Hazel and Cha-Cha and no one notices it. In season 3, he goes on his own little adventure with dear old Reginald to learn about his immortality and once again, his siblings don’t really seem to notice his absence. So isn’t he like a foreigner in his own family? But at the same time, he is always there for them. He will pretend to be Five’s dad, he will make sure Allison and Viktor are having fun (and getting drunk), he cares about Ben a lot and they all do care about him in return. Diego will make sure he feels okay, Luther will protect him, Five will go see his mother with him and so on. At the same time, Klaus is part of and alienated from his family. Finally, Dionysus is, yes, a god, but often he is mistaken for a mortal. His mother, Semele, was a mortal woman, while his father is Zeus. So the fact that he could become a god is very unique. Many also thought that Semele had a child with a mortal and not a god. Similarly, Klaus is immortal. We know it for sure now, but there was a time when even he himself did not believe it. It is my opinion that when we meet him, in the ambulance, that is actually the first time we see his immortality at work. I’m convinced Klaus overdosed many many times but always thought paramedics were able to revive him instead of believing it could be his powers. But just like for Dionysus, there is an ambiguity. Did he always have these powers or did he just get lucky a lot? Ambiguity is at the heart of Klaus’s personality.
Now it’s time to talk about madness, or should I say mania. It is the right word to use when talking about Dionysus. The word ‘mania’ comes from the verb mainomai (μαινομαι) in Ancient Greek meaning to become crazy or furious. There are two types of mania as well, one is good, white mania, and deliberate, while the other, dark mania, is bad and imposed on someone. Usually, in myths and stories, dark mania is the one in cause. Both mania are the same in every other aspect. There’s no way really to differentiate them except for the willingness of the participants. Those afflicted by white mania are Dionysus’s followers, while he will inflict dark mania upon others. Right, so now we have enough info to move on to Klaus. Because, just like Dionysus, Klaus does gain a large following of people. Obviously, in season 2, he has a whole cult following him almost blindly and you can see how they are similar to Dionysus followers. They willingly decided to follow Klaus, just like people afflicted with white mania willingly follow Dionysus. They are very loyal to him and will do basically anything he asks even if it is dangerous. But, he doesn’t really abuse his power to make them suffer, as he does not feel the need to. Similarly, Dionysus won’t mess with those afflicted by white mania, since they already follow him willingly. However, more importantly, Klaus has one really unwilling follower, Ben! He does not want to be around Klaus yet is stuck with him. Or at least that is what we think is happening for most of the show. We are made to believe that Klaus’s need for Ben was what made him come back as a ghost. That Klaus was the one to make him stay around because of his emotions and powers. This is very similar to dark mania. Dionysus’s want for trouble and respect is what pushes him to use his power and inflict dark mania. Even in the end, once we learn the real reason why Ben stayed, we could argue that Ben did it because of Klaus. Not because Klaus was forcing him to stay, but because he was allowing him to do so. Klaus was allowing him to take his time and ‘cross to the light’ when he is ready. His mania ended once its purpose was fulfilled, which is very alike dark mania in myths. Dark mania doesn’t last forever. Once Dionysus is content, it goes away and people are faced with the horrors they did while afflicted by mania (like dismembering their own son). So, Klaus’s relationship with Ben can be seen as similar to one of dark mania but with a much nicer ending.
Lastly, Dionysus is also the god of theatre, and boy oh boy is Klaus a drama queen! For this aspect of Dionysus, I would like to talk about one play in particular, The Frogs (βάτραχοι) by Aristophanes. Why this play? Because it’s my favourite! But seriously, because I really do think that Dionysus in this comedy is a lot like Klaus. Fun fact, comedy in Ancient Greek might have came from ritual chants that took place during komos, which I talked about earlier. We don’t know as much about comedy as we do about tragedy, but this is still one of the possible origins. Moving on to the play, it is roughly divided into two parts. In the beginning, we meet Dionysus, who wants to go to the underworld to bring back Euripides, a real-life tragedian who died the year prior. He comes up on stage disguised as Herakles, as he is one of the few who came back from the underworld. These first scenes really are a mix of slapstick humour and misunderstandings. It is very crude humour but there are still some very witty comebacks. This is a lot like Klaus when we first meet him. He is this very absurd and comedic character who once waxed his butt with chocolate pudding and hisses at a ghost. Though we still have to acknowledge that there is a kind of cleverness to him. He did manage to steal from his father for a long time without getting caught. Even in the extreme, he still keeps a certain control over the chaos. Like when he pretended to be Five’s father in season 1. He played a role, a character, which is in itself related to Dionysus. But more than that, he created a really chaotic and unbelievable story but still managed to come up on top… kind of… The whole scene uses the very same kind of humour as the beginning of The Frogs. The play goes on and Dionysus reaches the underworld. Once he’s there, he realizes that Euripides is having a fight with Eschyles, another real-life tragedian that died. Suddenly, the whole play takes a turn and Dionysus improvises himself as judge of their conflict. The two playwrights go on to have a very intellectual fight where they try to prove how their own tragedies were better for the Athenians. This is a complete shift in the type of humour. Suddenly, it is required to have a good understanding of not only theatre but also plays, authors and tragedy to be able to understand The Frogs on all levels. We can see a similar shift in Klaus. Once he loses Dave, he changes. He’s not this always-happy-and-nothing-is-ever-bothering-me kind of person anymore. But he still is, in a way, the comedic relief. He still is one of the characters you look to when you need to laugh, but it’s much more subtle now. As the show goes on, Klaus does achieve a kind of balance between this more absurd and physically comical character and a more intellectual and sarcastic one. Similarly, this play, which is about Dionysus and his characterization by Aristophanes, does require some balance to work and make any Athenian citizen laugh and have a good time.
Five as Prometheus (Προμηθεύς)
Tumblr media
For this one, I have to start by explaining the name itself. Prometheus or Προμηθεύς in Ancient Greek comes from the prefix pros (προς) meaning ‘before’ and the word metis (μῆτις) which is a more complicated word. You see metis generally means ‘skill’ or ‘intelligence’, it is the name of the goddess associated with wisdom, skill and craft. However, this word is specific to a more cunning intelligence, one where you trick people. You can think here of Odysseus. He is the perfect example of someone who uses his metis, especially when tricking the Cyclops (and I could talk about this for days!!). So, Prometheus’ name literally means ‘the one who uses his intelligence before’, ‘the one who thinks before’. He has forethought. And this is exactly like Five! How many times have we seen him make plans and calculations to figure out what will happen next? Yes, he’s been to the future and in some situations knows what will happen next, but it doesn’t stop him from thinking about every possible outcome and being ready for every single one of them. He is a lot like Prometheus and it will be even more flagrant when retracing what Prometheus did in the myths.
The first mythological episode I want to talk about is actually one that is very important, the trick at Mekone. Why is it important? Because it basically explains why sacrifices in Ancient Greece were the way they were. It’s what we call an etiological myth, stemming from the word aitia (αιτια) meaning cause in Ancient Greek. But let’s get on with it! The story starts with the gods having a meeting with the mortals at Mekone where the division of a sacrifice between them is to be decided. The ox, killed, is divided into two piles, one with the meat and one with the bones. Prometheus, to trick Zeus into choosing the bad pile, puts nice fat on top of the bones and the ox’s stomach on top of the meat. Zeus goes on to choose the bad pile, while the humans get the one with the meat. Did Zeus know he was choosing the bad pile? According to Hesiod, yes. But that doesn’t really matter to us. What matters is that Prometheus just decided to help the humans and just showed that he doesn’t like Zeus very much. Well, this sounds a lot like Five. On one hand, Five is just constantly helping humanity. He is willing to try and stop the apocalypse over and over again if it means saving the world. On the other hand, he also is, in a certain way, in competition with Reginald, the Zeus of the Umbrella Academy. The thing with Prometheus though is that his competition with Zeus is solely based on intelligence and ruse. He will try to outsmart Zeus in any way he can. And this, this is exactly like Five. Right off the bat, he tried to prove to Reginald he knew better than him when he decided to try time travel. He had to prove him wrong by being more clever. This goes on throughout the whole show. Five constantly need to prove to everyone that he is more clever than them but especially Reginald. He didn’t have to go around and quote the beginning of the Odyssey in the original Greek but he did it anyway!
The second mythological episode is the one where Prometheus steals the fire from the gods to give it to the humans. After the trick at Mekone, Zeus, still mad at Prometheus, decided to hide the fire from the mortals. Prometheus then stole it and gave it back to the mortals while also teaching them the arts of Hephaistos and Athena. Zeus admits that Prometheus outsmarted him before taking his revenge by sending Pandora to the mortals and sentencing Prometheus. If this isn’t exactly Five then I don’t know what it is. Five disobeyed Reginald, keeps finding a way to get what he wants from him, goes behind his back, seeks out his enemies and old friends with only one thing in mind, saving the world from the apocalypse. But there’s more to it. When Five learns valuable information from either Reginald, Pogo or his own older self, he doesn’t just keep it to himself. He tells his siblings so they can use it to better themselves or change their view of the situation. He’s not always good at it and can be really harsh but you can tell he truly wants what’s best for them Similarly, Prometheus did not only give the fire back to humans, he taught them how to use it to make their lives easier.
Finally, for all his crimes against the gods, Prometheus was sentenced to eternal torture. An eagle is to eat his ever-regenerating liver for the rest of time. However, generations and generations after first being sentenced, Prometheus will be set free by Herakles (that is Hercules’ name in Ancient Greek). Similarly, Five is in a way sentenced to save the world from the apocalypse over and over again. Ok, it might have only happened three times, but saving the world is a whole lot to do. Especially more than once! Eternal torture is also extremely lonely and Five did experience a similar kind of loneliness and pain when he got stuck in the future. I’d also add that Herakles is a son of Zeus. So far, we’ve talked about how Reginald is similar to Zeus. Logically then, one of Reginald’s children would be the one to save Five from his eternal torture which is what happens in the show in my opinion. Five’s siblings, Reginald’s children, decide to help him save the world from the apocalypse, to stop him from having to endure this torture alone. In a way, they save him just like Herakles did.
