"Prayers? You?" David asked, breathlessly as he kissed and embraced the very reason he'd found strength to survive his recent ordeal. "Have you found the Lord in my absence?"
"I think he was here all along."

ARC Review: Henry Henry
Tumblr media
Henry Henry follows Hal Lancaster—22, gay, Catholic—as he spends his first years out of Oxford floating between internships, drinking with his actor friends, struggling through awkward hook-ups, and occasionally going to confession to be absolved of his sins. When a grouse shooting accident-—funny in retrospect—makes a romance out of Hal's rivalry with fumblingly leftist family friend Harry Percy, Hal finds that he wants, for the first time, to be himself. But his father Henry is an Englishman: he will not let his son escape tradition. To save himself, Hal must reckon not only with grief and shame but with the wounds of his family's past.
My review:
Henry Henry is an oft-times dark debut about a queer noble in the 21st century. Hal lost his mother as a child, and his Lord father Henry becomes overbearing towards his eldest son, but is now getting remarried 15 years after being widowed. To cope with many aspects of his life, Hal turns to vices such as sex, drugs, and overspending his father's wealth.
Hal finds himself spending more time with his from-birth rival Harry as their relationship changes from enemies to lovers, much to the displeasure of their noble fathers. Throughout the novel, Hal finds himself wanting to open up about the dark secrets regarding his father.
The writing feels very consistent to how I imagine Hal would speak, and there's sprinklings of humor without risking it becoming a humorous book. I highly enjoyed this book, there was themes within in that made me want to keep reading and find out what is going to happen next.

Under observation? Whatever for? I am not mad. Perhaps a lunatic professed that. No!
I had not gone mad. Yet the doctor questioned my sanity. Yet he had no reason not to. If his reasoning could be discerned... The the doctor could be persuaded to let me go.

Follow-up post from the collection of illustrations from one of my final uni projects!!
In these illustrations, Aurora is accompanied by Melinoe, the witch who cursed her and whom she brought back to life.
Melinoe is a powerful witch with the gift of seeing spirits and the dead. She gets tangled into the kingdom’s secrets once she starts working for the royal family when she is only 21. Her attempt to expose them is proven unsuccessful as the King switches the narrative and accuses her of being an evil mastermind with the goal to take the throne from him. This ultimately gets Melinoe killed, and in her last attempt to seek revenge, she curses his firstborn child to die when she turns 21, the same age she entered the kingdom.
When she is brought back to life and given a second chance, she decides to live for herself regardless of who seeks her. Aurora, or rather “Dhalia” being the sole exception, since she is the one who brought Melinoe back to life. Melinoe considers it fair to grant her wish in teaching her magic. Their deal ends when Aurora learns about curse breaking, leading to them parting ways.
Romance wasn’t in the plans.
As the bond between them strengthens, Aurora has to come to terms with the fact that Melinoe is nothing like the nightmares she was told of in the palace.
Will Aurora risk it all for love?

The Dangers of Blue Beards (in Books)
Bluebeard Retellings and Reimaginings As I’m sure you all know I’m not a folklorist or anything like that, but I LOVE folktales and stories, and I think in worldbuilding one of the best and most fun ways to get to grips with a culture is by imagining what stories people tell about themselves and their world. In The Crows I made up local legends and sayings, and put out a little eBook collection…

Jonathan Harker’s Journal

Today is a devilish frenzy. To make sense of it all, I must jot everything down. Not to mention, it allows one to reflect. To think that it was not long ago that I was a solicitor’s clerk. Now a solicitor.
Imagine that. I am forever grateful for Mina’s and Father’s unwavering support. Speaking of Father, I wonder how he fares. No doubt the news concerning Mr. Renfield weigh heavily on his mind. I know that he tries not to let on.

Do you love fairy tales? I want to hear from you!
EDIT: I will be closing the survey on November 9th! Thank you everyone who has participated!!!
My name is Ainjel Stephens and I am a PhD candidate in the Folklore department at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am currently conducting a research project on fairy tales reception by queer-identifying individuals for my PhD dissertation under the supervision of Sarah Gordon. The purpose of this study is to learn how people who feel queer or identify as queer think about and respond to fairy tales.
Tumblr media
Artist: Gustave Dore
If this sounds like a project you would be interested in participating in, then I invite you to take a short survey where you will be asked a few questions about who you are, as well as reflective questions about your thoughts and feelings on fairy tales, and if these tales are “queer.” It should only take about 10 minutes of your time to complete.
The survey asks if you would like to participate further with an interview with myself in order to discuss your thoughts and opinions on fairy tales. This interview will be a recorded hour-long interview through video conferencing platform Tauria or Webex. If you select yes, I will be in contact with you with further steps. If you select no, then that’s it! Thank you for participating.
To participate, you must be the age of majority and no younger than 19, have fairy tale knowledge in English, and identify with the term “queer.”
If you are interested, click the link below to participate in the anonymous survey.
If you have questions or want to chat further, you can contact me at [email protected] or through my inbox on my project blog, www.diamondsandtoads.tumblr.com/
If you know anyone who may be interested in participating in this study, please send this post along.
Thank you for reading!
The proposal for this research has been reviewed by the Interdisciplinary Committee on Ethics in Human Research and found to be in compliance with Memorial University’s ethics policy. If you have ethical concerns about the research, such as your rights as a participant, you may contact the Chairperson of the ICEHR at [email protected] or by telephone at 709-864-2861

Scribbles Saturday #9 {2022}
Hello gentlepersons!
Everything Saturday, I post an excerpt from one of my WIP (work in progress)
Below is an excerpt from chapter 2 of Dare Not Confess (Draft#1):
Tumblr media
As for the dreams, no doubt came from my desire to make a good impression with the Count. At some point, I finally slept and was awakened by the continuous knocking on my door. Breakfast consisted of a porridge of maize flower called "mamaliga" and a dish of eggplant stuffed with meat called "impletata". Both dishes were delicious and got recipe for both. (Mem. Cook these dishes for Mina as well)
I had to hurry breakfast for the train started a little before eight. I just made it on time. All day we meandered through the country. Sometimes one saw quaint towns or castles perched in steep hills. Other times we passed rivers and streams.

Mha fandom when you say that Izuku’s biggest fic mischaracterization isn’t making him twinky:
Tumblr media
WHEN DID BEING A TWINK BECOME A BAD THING CAN I JUST ASK THAT
Like yes, twinkifying one male character in a ship can be annoying—it can perpetuate heterosexual roles onto same sex relationships (“who’s the woman in the relationship/who wears the pants in the relationship?”), BUT LET US BE CLEAR:
TWINKS ARE A PART OF THE QUEER COMMUNITY. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A TWINK, MAKING A CHARACTER A TWINK, OR SEEING A CHARACTER AS A TWINK.
WHEN in the ever loving FUCK did that somehow translate into “the twink has to be the stereotypically aggressive one so it doesn’t abide by queer stereotypes”. HOW DID WE GET HERE.

I’m done with my master’s degree and now I’m here to present you with a collection of illustrations I did for one of my final projects!
We had the creative freedom to choose the theme of our final project, and I chose to create a 3-minute animation queer retelling of The Sleeping Beauty. These are some of the illustrated stills from the animation, showcasing the protagonist who, of course, is Aurora.
In my retelling, Princess Aurora finds out she has been cursed before she was even born, but the witch who cursed her has been killed. Aurora takes her fate into her own hands and decides to bring the witch back from the dead, since no one else knew how to break the curse. Succeeding, she introduces herself as a poor village girl named Dhalia, and asks the witch, Melinoe, to teach her magic. Since Aurora brought her back to life, Melinoe grants her wish and takes her in as an apprentice not knowing she’s the child she cursed before dying.
