I am prefacing this with I love Stardew Valley and Demetrius and I am not trying to start a fight. This is a frustration I feel with the game as well as many things I've seen. Just. Sharing it.

You know man I've been playing Stardew since. Forever. And so I've seen dialogue changes quite a bit. Vanilla dialogue can be... repetitive, and so when it changes I very much Notice.

And like. Demetrius' writing, whether intentionally or not, as gotten both much more racist and ableist in the last few years. And maybe it's not on purpose! Maybe it's totally subconscious on CA's part! I don't wanna assign malice. It's easier to think it's ignorance and accidental.

And it's easy to assume it's partially fandom response, considering how much people hate him. And CA is very fandom oriented.

But Demetrius' writing is bad. It is uniquely bad. It is bad in a way that none of the others are (yes I am repeating myself). And that is oh so very obvious in any run where you get hearts up with that family.

Oh the singular Black man in town totally ignores his white step-son, treats his white wife terribly, and dotes on his mixed race daughter as if she's the only person who matters? Insults everything his wife makes? Makes vague threats at the farmer?

"Oh but it's not because he's Black!" How do you know? Are you inside CA's head? Do you know what he thinks? Do you know every unconscious bias of a man you've never met? No. You don't. I bet you don't even know all of yours. Fuck knows no one does.

Don't defend him when you don't even know him. Listen. Listen. LISTEN.

Stardew Valley is a wonderful, awesome game. But it's made by a flawed man (everyone is flawed) and it reflects his biases pretty clearly if you ask me (as many works of art do).

And if that offends you, maybe you should ask yourself why. Maybe you should ask yourself why it's so important this game and man are perfect instead of acknowledging that this amazing game has flaws that can make the game uncomfortable or frustrating for many players. Flaws that diminish characters who could otherwise be very interesting.

I also said Ableist. I'd go on a whole rant about that, too, but because Demetrius' neurodivergence is implied, not explicit, it's hard to know what is and isn't meant to be taken. But again, making the clearly "different" character so awful to others is not ideal. Especially when they're the only one.

And before you ask: Yes. This has a lot to do with Demetrius being the only Black man in town. And fitting into a lot of awful stereotypes along the way. I'd be much much MUCH more lenient if there were other Black men in Stardew. But there aren't. Demetrius is all we get.

And he just keeps getting worse every update.

I love him so much. He's a neurodivergent father. He's the only non-white parent in town. He's the only step-parent in town. He and Robin and Seb and Maru have the only blended and mixed family.

There's so much nuance to him and to his relationships and to his family and his backstory. There could be so much going on with him and science, or him and Maru, or him and anything.

But nah he hates fun, talks about how dancing sucks (even though he dances every week) and seemingly hates both his wife and step-son in many dialogues.

Why? Why? It makes no sense to me in-universe.

Watsonian versus Doylist analysis. When there's no in-universe explanation that follows the world. Look to the people creating the universe.

Gonna go on a lil rant, apologies to people following me for fandom.

I've given the fuck up creating myself in video games. They don't have half the shit that I am, from a body type to my height to my cane, they don't fucking have ANYTHING that can make the character on-screen close to me.

I know I'm lucky, too. I'm white with straight hair. But I can't make my character my body type. If I can, they have boobs and I'd rather not have a representation of me have boobs (trying to get top surgury rn). I can't nail the hair down (I have extremely long hair). I can't change the height (I'm short. Granted, I'm lucky there too because I'm within the average height). I can't give my character a fucking cane.

You won't believe how many character creators get only some of these down.

The Sims 4, I can get four of the listed things right, five if I set the gender to male and give myself dysphoria just to give my character a flat chest.

Stardew Valley, I can get two. My body type isn't average, so the one girl style doesn't work. They don't have an option for a fucking cane despite there being a disabled character (which SDV does shitty things with. No, you cannot touch a wheelchair without permission and you certainly cannot move someone in a wheelchair without permission! Wtf?!). The height is unchangable.

BG3, I can get one thing right: my fucking skin color. That's it! No cane, no fucking other body option other than "thin with boobs, muscle man, muscle woman, and very muscle man." What the fuck am I supposed to do?!

This isn't even getting into the in-game issues! THIS IS THE FUCKING CHARACTER CREATOR.

It's so bad I don't even make myself. I make an OC of mine.

AND I STILL RUN INTO ISSUES BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE GOOD CURLY HAIR OPTIONS!

I've given up so much that I'm making an OC by default and still fail to get the hair right!

And I'm STILL lucky because I can get one thing right. Some people can't even get THAT.

I need mods to get things right. Mods that can't always be reliable if a game is always updating because I'll need to update the mods, which can be a hassle even if they have an updated verison out.

I shouldn't need mods to make myself in a game.

I shouldn't need mods to fix the ableism, anti-fat, anti-enby, racism, sexism, and intersexism.

I should just be able to make myself. End of story.

genuinely devastated and I'm two days late so it's probably already been said, but god, Matt really is an amazing DM and an amazing friend. even when sam absolutely blindsides him with that action, he pulls it together, maintains player autonomy while also clarifying player intention, asks everyone to contribute dice to the damage both as a symbolic gesture but also to give the other players something to do rather than helplessly watch. when he asks the table what they're going to do, only to get complete silence, he gives them a beautiful short speech (through his own shock and upset!) to help them accept it. the things they ask to salvage, he gives - even though he'd just said the entire torso was destroyed, when liam asks for the piece with the three grass blades on it, matt says he finds it.

to be able to pull it back from such an extremely unexpected and shocking action, and make sure everyone gets some measure of peace? just speaks so much to how well he knows both the craft and his players. may we all have someone who cares so much.

as much as i love stardew valley i really don't like the emphasis it places on marriage and kids. it's just something about the way that you HAVE to add a nursery to your house in order to complete the house upgrade achievement (and of course you need all achievements to achieve 100% completion), the way having kids is an achievement in itself. the way that when your spouse asks you if you want to have kids your options are "yes" and "not now". i'm genuinely really thankful for the option to turn your kids into doves. the way the DAY after you become best friends with someone single you get a letter in the mail telling you how to ask someone out, the way there's ANOTHER achievement for dating ten people (well. it's really for reaching a ten-heart friendship level with like eight people but there are only so many people you can do that with without dating them). the way the mayor says at your wedding ceremony that "from this day onward, [name] is going to be just as much a part of the community as anyone else" implying that you weren't a part of the community until you got married. the way the eight heart events are supposed to just be you becoming best friends with that person but at least three people's events involve them secretly being in love with you during that supposedly platonic cutscene. i personally love getting married in stardew valley but not everybody wants that and the pressure the game puts on you to settle down and have a nice little family with 2.5 kids kind of puts a damper on the fun.

Boy do I ever Anon! Thank you for giving me the chance to get on my soapbox about this.

Shane doesn't relapse when he is happily married to the Farmer. The popular "relapse" interpretation is based on faulty assumptions about what substance abuse recovery is supposed to look like and flat-out misreadings of the text of the game.

Shane doesn't "start" drinking again: he never stops, just reduces the amount he drinks. (Unless we are supposed to interpret the phrase "cut back" in the 7 Heart Event as meaning "quit” or "gave up” for some reason. Or if we ignore the new 1.6 dialogue about him drinking less after his 6 Heart event.)

Shane's mess is not a consequence of uncontrolled drinking, but a consequence of his depression and possible under-managed ADHD. His room at Marnie's remains exactly as messy when he's in recovery as it is when he's spiraling, so the drinking has no effect on his cleanliness.

”Okay,” you might say, “but he still shouldn’t drink, and he should pick up his room.” And sure, yeah. Ideally we should all do the same. But that’s not always a fair or realistic expectation for everyone. Not everyone can quit their addictions or bad habits cold turkey. Not everyone is going to be the model citizen. That doesn’t mean they can’t live happy lives. That doesn’t mean they don’t have value. That doesn’t mean Shane doesn’t have value.

So instead of complaining about the ways that Shane fails to measure up to typical adult standards, it may be more productive to ask: is he happy? Is he doing okay? By any reasonable measure, a married Shane is living his best possible life. He‘s surprised and delighted to be your trophy husband. He doesn’t have to worry about taking a soul-sucking job or struggling with unemployment. His drinking isn’t causing him any problems, and if he can’t keep his personal space clean, at least he doesn’t let his mess spread to the rest of the house. He has his own little coop for Charlie and it’s just adorable to watch him bounce her up and down. He actually makes time for Jas. I am not requiring everyone to love Shane the way he is written, or to make space in their farmhouse for him. But please, have realistic expectations for the character that exists. And do make friends with him. He gives you an OP recipe and access to blue chickens!

#My other hot take is that people shouldn’t install mods that “fix” NPC character flaws #Yeah it bothers me too when Penny pushes George’s wheelchair without consent or when Clint gets on his “Nice Guy” hobbyhorse #But CA gave these characters flaws for a reason #Flaws add interest and depth to characters #Instead of knee jerk rejecting my discomfort with the character’s bad behavior #I can sit with it and reflect on my own behavior and values #And I can recognize the worth even in characters who don’t share my values #Or who don’t change and grow in the “right” way #After all I’m not gonna share all your values #Or always change and grow the way I ought to #But we all gotta live together and give each other a little grace #Anywho those are my hot takes #Thank you for your time #shane stardew valley #stardew valley #media analysis #media criticism #media literacy
