An Unusual Expectation

Wong didn’t want to sleep.

Not that it was a surprise. He hadn’t had a full night’s sleep in weeks.

Ever since the Scarlet Witch attacked Kamar-Taj, he hadn’t been able to sleep more than four hours at a time.

It was no longer unusual for Wong to rise from his bed in the dark, dress, and circle the half-renovated courtyard in silence until the cold sky began to lighten.

Nor was it unusual for him to thoroughly check each of the invisible protections he’d helped to reconstruct around the temple’s perimeter, spreading his enhanced senses wide to feel for any breach to their security.

What was unusual was that this time, he did not do any of those things.

Because this time… it was a dream that had startled him awake.

Snitches and Stitches

Summary:

Leaning back more heavily into the wall, more on his uninjured side than his back, he grits his teeth and regulates his breathing. Blood loss, he thinks to himself.

Space is rather cold.

Stephen shivers as Levi draws closer around him. He can’t quite stop, but it’s easier to blame the environment than from his time under Maw’s hands.

He breathes out and almost expects to see mist emerge from his mouth. Then he remembers space doesn’t have the atmosphere for it. Whatever this ship has that allows for humans to survive in it, it’s not something akin to Earth’s atmospheric conditions.

Wincing, he efficiently strips enough to reach the gash in his side. The moment his robes are pulled away, it resumes bleeding. He’s grateful it was mostly on his back than his front. It’ll make it a bitch to reach and patch up, but at least Stark and the boy wouldn’t have been able to notice. Especially when Levi returned to their place on his shoulders.

Even his best attempts at steadying his hands are the worst he’s ever done, but he doesn’t need much more than his own focus to retrieve the necessary medical supplies. Even blind, deaf, and dumb, he’d likely know the shape of their existence better than himself.

Trembling, useless hands shake too much to thread the needle. Stabbing himself once, and then twice, Stephen snarls as he fights the urge to toss them away. Frustrated, he resorts to using his magic, but they shatter and fray when grasped.

He no longer fights the urge to hurl them across the room. Fisting his hands, the pain cuts clean through the fog of exhaustion over his mind. Stephen relishes in the clarity it brings him.

Levi wraps around his fingers, gently prying them apart. Lightly tapping the area around his injury, Stephen gets the point. Remember what this was for?

Stephen closes his eyes and swallows down the anger. The cloak is only trying to help. He tries to find a measure of calm. Treating himself while off balance is likely to do more harm than good. It’s more difficult than it should be to settle his thoughts, but nothing about this situation is regular.

Stephen’s sweating, but that might just be exertion from the fight. His heart rate’s up. If this goes on much longer it’ll reach 120 bpm.

When he feels more in control, he exhales harshly and summons a new set of surgical thread and needles. Together, with Levi holding his hands as still as they can (though even that is not anywhere close to-), Stephen twists around and stitches himself up one agonizing stitch at a time.

After it heals, the ragged gash will inevitably be another ugly scar on his patchwork body, but Stephen’s long become resigned to the hazards he faces as a sorcerer. It’s the penance he pays for the neglectful harm he’s committed in his medical career. At least these scars remain as proof. The multitudes of injuries Dormammu caused him only exists as they are seared into his memory.

He has to hurry. The boy and Stark are bound to notice his absence sooner rather than later.

“Dr. Strange, where have you been?” The kid asks, all newborn puppy enthusiasm as he bounces his way towards Stephen. “Mr. Stark says our ETA is another three hours.”

Stephen’s tempted to ignore him, but a glance at Stark rings alarm bells in his head. The chances of any of this working out is slim to none, but those chances tank if they can’t even work together. Stark’s not even looking at them, but Stephen suspects that if he doesn’t at least treat the boy politely, he’ll lose any chance of Stark being cooperative.

Not that those chances are high in the first place.

“Meditating.” Stephen tells him (his name is Peter, he reminds himself) and the boy’s eyes widen as if he’s told the secrets to magic than a mental exercise. Stephen lets Peter make his own conclusions. There’s no need to inform him of the details.

Stark’s ward, because whatever the official title is there’s no denying the sheer amount of care the man is exuding for his kid, chatters on about increasingly fantastical notions of what magic is and does. Stephen, because he’s never been able to stop himself, corrects Peter on every last detail he gets wrong with maybe too much vehemence.

Mystifyingly, the boy doesn’t so much as bat an eye, simply nodding with vigor and peppering Stephen with even more questions. He can’t quite help the fondness that rises up at the behavior. At least this explains why Stark is so attached to the kid. If Stephen, who’s been called every variation of cold-hearted icy-bastard there is under the sun, finds him endearing, it would take someone truly evil to hate him.

Stark watches them out of the corner of his eye for some time. Stephen continues responding to the kid, partially out of growing interest in Peter’s line of thought, and partially because it’s funny as fuck watching Stark twitch at every exclamation of admiration that comes out of Peter’s mouth. There’s not much else he can do to prepare for their upcoming battle. The ship’s moving too fast, and Stephen’s not actually sure what performing stationary magics while on a moving object will cause. He’ll have to do what he can when they arrive.

“Pete, come over here.” Stark calls out, and like gravity, the kid’s attention is immediately drawn to the man. Amused, Stephen watches Peter scurry towards Stark. He’s not sure what Stark’s so worried about. It’s clear the boy adores him. Peter’s interest in Stephen is merely temporary. Fascination with the new and strange. When this trip is over, the boy will inevitably forget about him.

Stephen ignores the nagging thought that none of them might return at all. He has sworn to protect the Time Stone, but he’s also a doctor. If there’s any chance he has at keeping the boy and Stark alive to go home while also keeping the stone safe, he’ll take it.

Stark sets Peter on some sort of task. It’s clearly more of a distraction than anything else, but somehow Stark spins it so Peter is working on something vitally important to the mission. For a moment, Stephen thinks that’s it. All Stark wanted was to keep Peter busy until they arrive.

But then Stephen feels eyes on him and looks over to see Stark watching him with contemplative eyes. Stark tilts his head in Stephen’s direction and raises his eyebrow in silent question. Stephen raises one right back, unsure of what the man’s asking.

Stark rolls his eyes and gestures at his own side, the respective location for where Stephen’s injury sits on his own body. Reflexively, Stephen narrows his eyes back, but winces internally at the giveaway.

Unimpressed, Stark gestures again, more insistently, and pointedly glances once in Peter’s direction.

You wouldn’t dare. Stephen glares the threat into Stark’s eyes and crosses his arms defensively. He barely knows the kid, but he’s sure that if Peter became aware Stephen was hurt, a bigger fuss than he’d like would be made. It already grates that Stark somehow noticed Stephen was injured in the first place.

Wouldn’t I? Stark looks back at him unimpressed.

Stephen scowls, but, with one eye on Peter in case the teen suddenly turns around, pulls back his robes just enough to flash the bandages underneath for a couple seconds.

Stark nods once, sharply, and returns to whatever he’s looking at on his screens.

Feeling unnervingly seen through, Stephen stalks to the closest wall and sinks back down into a meditation pose. That it’s the furthest point he can reach from Stark without looking like he’s running away is a coincidence.

And yet, somehow there’s gratitude welling up within him for Stark not making a spectacle of Stephen’s state. Maybe it’s because Stark didn’t notice until it was too late, but Stephen doubts it’s the case.

Ugh, it’s infuriating. Stephen doesn’t need to thank Stark for minding his own business. They’ll fight together, hopefully win, and go their separate ways.

Set in a world where Banner was wrong and an alternative universe does form, and Stephen Strange's misfortune starts....oh, about five years too early. Ongoing, 23k words.

Three-Legged Puppy Fics

List five of your least-popular fics, as well as when/why you wrote them.

Home to the Weary: Merlin, Gwen/Morgana, 2010.

I wrote this at the request of a friend who wanted, I think, something Gwen-centric. Because I was not a fan of the show I decided to focus on an AU in which Gwen backflipped out of that whole situation and founded her own sort of kingdom, only meeting the terrible trio years later. It was really fun and was the first time I'd ever tried writing a fic that hinted at a larger world going on around the characters, if that makes sense. This one's a little pretentious but you can definitely see my "style" as it were.

Treads on the Ground: Babylon (not the sci-fi show, the short-lived british cop show), Liz Garvey/Finn Kirkwood, 2022.

This was written during my Bertie Carvel phase where I'd watched "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" and was desperate for something, anything, that didn't have him wearing terrible prosthetics or playing a psycho. He still sort of plays a psycho in this show, but he looks super hot and angry all the time which is really all I needed. (Also bonus hilarity: Liz's boyfriend in this show is played by none other than James Lance, playing "louche asshole" to the absolute hilt.) Anyway I wrote this because I really wanted a fake dating AU for these two AND a "Finn is secretly in line to the throne" fic and this was the perfect way to combine these two. I'm still legitimately really proud of thsi fic.

The Bright Relief: 1776 musical, John Adams & Thomas Jefferson (and a little bit of / in there, if I'm honest), 2010.

I wrote this because my friends waldorph and screamlet and I were having the Summer of 1776 Feelings and we all wrote various (wonderful) crimes and misdemeanors in that fandom, mostly revolving all the ways in people who love John Adams make fun of him. That was a truly terrible summer but made a whole lot better by those two, and by William Daniels being the most John Adams to ever John Adams. (I actually rewatched the miniseries a few months ago and Paul Giamatti does a great job but that thing is SO DREARY. Although I will say Stephen Dillane first caught my eye in the role of TJeff, aka once again playing a guy who's down real bad for someone smarter than him (in this case both Abigail AND John). The scene where he first meets Abigail is just nonstop flirting, with John making faces in the background. It's great.)

Happy Tails To You (Until We Meet Again): SGA, Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, 2009.

Oh lordy — probably the worst fic I've ever written, but I can't quite bring myself to delete it. I've been on the periphery of fandom for most of my adult life (what up X-Files yahoo groups and Prodigy Star Trek RP rooms), but SGA was what made me start thinking of writing fic after a long period of only reading it. (Yes, there is college-era gus fic out there. No, I'm not posting it on AO3.) I never quite got a handle on Sheppard or McKay but I did enjoy writing this and the other SGA fic I wrote, but yeah this deserves its obscurity.

Honey Now I'm Not One To Complain: Dalgliesh, Adam Dalgliesh/Kate Miskin, 2022.

Another one of my "Bertie Carvel is extremely attractive when he's sad and/or a cop" flash-fandoms, although I wrote a pretty good primer on the first season that I think gives a good case for the show as a whole. I wanted to write that largely because the show is so resolutely grim and I prefer stories that are... not grim, so I gave myself the challenge of putting these guys into one of the classic tropes. I did toy with the fake dating/marriage trope but honestly I think this was funnier, and I would always rather commit to the bit.

like the homie krankittoeleven, i pretty much only use angst as a plot device - there are only happy/hopeful endings in this household lmao - but if i consider context, the fic with the angstiest ending is probably Honorfall (zutara, rated E). maybe Of All the Things My Hands Have Held (zutaraang, rated M)..?

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

lots of my fics have happy endings ;))))) as for the happiest... ahh, probably If It Means a Lot to You (zukaang, rated M) and Flowers Never Pick Themselves (zutaraang, rated M).

8. Do you get hate on fics?

er, yes and no? i feel like hate is a strong word. it's more so that there are some readers who have simply ~disliked~ certain premises of mine, which, y'know, is what it is! click away or write your own shit! ♥

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

the good kind, baby, and absolutely nothing less. if it doesn't make me wet, i don't post it!

10. Do you write crossovers?

i used to! especially with and amongst irl friends. if there was a fandom i/we were into, there was a harry potter crossover in our shared docs to go with it LOL.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

an entire fic? no, not to my knowledge anyway. but i've definitely had some scenes and dialogue grabbed and scattered across the web over the years.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

no ;-; i've never even had art made for/inspired by my fics ;-;;;; one day though. one day i am going to write something [clenches fist] so fucking good...

Take Care (zutara, rated M), and several other zutara fics that i have put into a graveyard so that even though they're unlikely to be completed, they can still be appreciated!

16. What are your writing strengths?

mmm. this is a bit hard for me to answer because i feel like i could use improvement everywhere, always. i could probably use some more work in my dialogue though (just having more of it, i think). with conflict resolution as well - circling back to angst, i usually gloss over it because i want [my] characters to have nothing but good times and good endings. i need to be less wary of putting them through some shit, which i am working on!

anywayyy. my biggest strength is my prose!

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

up for debate, but personally my weakness is outlines. i try to use them but my brain does not like having "rules" when it comes to creating a story, even if i am the one to write them ;;

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

i'm a native (american) english speaker, so this question feels.. odd? bc ~american~? but as a native english speaker, i absolutely don't mind at all. i love languages and i love letting them into my brain! i myself use words from different languages, especially in what i'm writing is based in another country/place of origin.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

inuyasha! no you cannot see it, it's lost in the ether!

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Real War is Far Easier (zutaraang, rated M) and Performance Issues (zutara, rated E), which was a gift to the wonderful @zutarawasrobbed! there's a whole universe there that nobody but the two of us know about and i can't wait for the day that everyone can laugh about it as much as we do LOL

he’s such an important character to me and i have so many thoughts and headcanons about him but it’s hard to find people who like and appreciate stephen…outside of ironstrange, which is a fine ship but…..there’s so much more to stephen than just a ship, y’know?

The Multiverse does not suffer arrogance lightly.

When Doctor Stephen Strange fled through the Multiverse to escape the Scarlet Witch, he stumbled upon a horrifying truth. Landing in an ashen ruin of a universe, Stephen learned from his sinister counterpart that realities are colliding. And when this happens, one or both are destroyed.

Though he fought and defeated Sinister Strange, in the commotion of Dreamwalking, no one noticed when Sinister Strange escaped his dying universe and took Stephen's place in Earth-199999. Stephen, meanwhile, was left stranded in Sinister's decating world with nothing for company but his precious Darkhold.

Soon, even that companionship would be threatened. The Scarlet Witch, in an effort to right her wrongs, destroyed the Darkhold, using her power to extend the command across the Multiverse.

Seeing the Darkhold, his only possible hope of escape, start to disintegrate, Stephen sought to preserve the tome by absorbing it, fusing himself with the chaotic tome.

Empowered with the Darkhold, the now-corrupted Stephen manages to return to Earth-199999, confronting Sinister Strange. a Spencer Reid-centric Criminal Minds fanfic

Or: Five times Reid (accidentally) started dating his co-workers' relatives and they found out + One time someone finally explained to Tara Lewis what the fuck was going on.

Surely, Stephen would welcome a surprise visit from his dad, a chance to reconnect – they could get lunch together and talk about everything and anything.

(Everything besides Melli and the impending divorce, or Gideon’s disappointment in Stephen’s choice of career, or Stephen’s disappointment in Gideon’s parenting)

It had been easy enough for the seasoned profiler to find Stephen’s dorm room, a sly smile at the aging secretary in the CalTech administration office and a bit of charm in the face of the young RA enough to open most doors.

Every door except the one he was faced with now.

The entrance to Stephen’s dorm room was covered in stickers, Superman and Batman staring back at him as Gideon tried to gather enough courage to raise his fist and knock. Maybe he should have called ahead? It was easier staring down an Unsub and arguing in favour of a deranged serial killer, than it was to raise his hand and step towards an uncertain future. A future containing his son. It might sound dramatic, but Gideon could feel the world narrow down. There was only the musty smell of old carpeting, the cheery sounds of dorm life a few hallways away, and the peeling smile of Superman as he promised to safe Metropolis once more.

He took a deep breath, centring himself, his knuckles brushing against the worn-down wood just in time to recognize the muffled sounds coming from his son’s room, the noise previously only one voice in the great canopy of student living.

Moans.

Someone – probably his son – was moaning in pleasure.

Gideon took great pride in his ability to remain calm even as the world burned down around him, but just this once he wished he could turn back time. His hope that maybe Stephen hadn’t heard his tentative knock was crushed in a heartbeat, the startled cursing coming from the other side of the door rather damning.

As was the second voice joining the familiar cadence of his son.

There was another man in the room with Stephen.

His son was not only fooling around at 11am on a Thursday, he was having a homosexual encounter to boot.

This was probably not how Stephen had hoped his coming out would go. This was not how Gideon had hoped he’d find out.

Gideon took a polite step back from the door, only moments before it was pulled open by a strange young man. As a by-product of his profession, Gideon was a master at assessing a situation – and a stranger – in the fraction of a second, and this was no different. Their eyes met for little more than a moment before the man was gone, hurrying down the hallway with looping uneven steps as if to hide a rather obvious erection – and the embarrassed blush creeping up his neck.

Thin, young, barely eighteen if even that, unkempt long-ish hair, and deep bruises underneath his brown eyes. Nervous disposition, not very athletic, and yet… Gideon was pretty sure he’d seen a stroke a genius in the fleeing stranger.

But this mystery wasn’t the reason he was here – there were more important things contained in this particular dorm room; his son for example.

Turning around to see Stephen fix his belt, Gideon tried to smooth over any discontent before it could grow big and ugly, “I see you’ve taken to college life quite well. Can’t say I blame you”.

“What are you doing here?”

“I’m in town for a lecture and I thought I’d surprise my son by buying him a proper lunch. How long has it been since you’ve eaten more than instant ramen and fried eggs?”

Stephen rolled his eyes, but there was a small smile on his lips – invisible to anyone without a trained eye. His son hadn’t changed at all since the last time they saw each other, and yet he seemed like a completely different person. His hair was longer, his jaw sharper, and his room smelled like teenage boy and sex.

Fic Recs

I’ve spent a couple months rereading two of the absolute BEST Loki-centric fanfics I have ever read:

The Relic by @mareebird

This is…just so good, guys. It’s one of the best character studies I have ever read, it has such a wonderful view on sitting with pain and knowing you will not be fixed, necessarily, but you can become something better than you used to be. Mareebird has such a way with words and just gets Loki, Thor, and Stephen Strange in ways I’ve rarely seen. She shows love between broken people who are trying to be better and sometimes just crash and fail but continue marching on. Also her OC is a wonderful addition to the MCU, and to Thor and Loki’s lives.

Ain’t No Magic, Ain’t No Lie by @iguessyouregonnamissthepantyraid

This one is more plot-centric (and is the second longfic in a series set in this AU). After being tortured by Thanos, Loki joins the Guardians of the Galaxy, rethinks his life, and becomes best friends with Peter Quill despite his better judgment. Loki just fits so well into the Guardians, which isn’t something I would have expected until reading this series. This entire series is hilarious and poignant in turns, and every time I read it I just want more of these characters (luckily there are 5 or so parts to the series).
