Your mother smooths her hand over your shoulder. The lines by her eyes deepen as she smiles. Her touch, her soft look—she offers a warmth you never thought you’d feel from her again. You burn—happily, you burn under her gaze.

“I am,” you admit. Sweeping your gaze back in Din’s direction, you sigh. “It’s been… a weird few days.” Few months, few years. Stars, you’re tired.

Your mother follows your gaze, and she moves to stand alongside you. She crosses her arms, but she isn’t angry. She is comfortable, considerate. She tilts her head, narrowing her eyes. “Who is he to you?”

Her question doesn’t make sense at first, not with the rising heat of the day and your lack of breakfast, but then you realize she is asking about Din. She is asking about the man in the field, pausing long enough to explain the mechanics of his farming equipment to a smitten little girl. 

You answer without hesitation. “He’s my partner… in all things.”

𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐲

bickering is commonplace between you and bucky barnes; the two of you never see eye to eye. ever since you joined the avengers, the ex-assassin has had it out for you.

he constantly critiques your technique and skill set on the field, gives zero praise during training, and irritates the living hell out of you.

of course, he's unhappy with you again—your argument carries down the hall, stopping everyone from crossing your path. you've barely stepped into the avengers tower before bucky grabs your arm and seethes, "how could you be stupid?"

you scoff, ripping your arm from his grip. "how could you give such dumb orders?"

"you could've gotten yourself killed!" he exclaims, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"but, I didn't! yes, I could've gotten hurt, but I saved so many more people doing what I felt was the right move!"

"why can't you ever just listen to me?" he sighs, utterly exacerbated by you.

"why would I listen to someone who's an asshole to me all the time? you could try and be nice every once in a while, bucky," you yell, unashamed that your words can be heard by anyone walking by. you cannot fathom why he's like this with you and only you.

"it's better this way."

a dry laugh escapes your lips. "what the hell does that mean? better than what?"

"it doesn't matter!" he insists.

"'it doesn't matter,' my ass. you are infuriating!" you're ready to scream at this point. "god, what's your problem with me? what did I ever do to you? I've had enough of this conversation. I'm so sick of your shit—"

he grabs your arm to stop you. you're seething with anger, but your expression softens when you see the anguish in his eyes.

"my problem with you?" he scoffs, stepping forward. you're mere inches apart. "where do I even start? you do your own thing, you never listen to me, and your antics never leave my fucking brain."

you step closer to him; you can feel his breath tickling your cheeks. "I fucking hate you, bucky barnes," you hiss.

"the feeling's mutual, sweetheart. wanna do us a favor and shut up for once?"

"make me."

before you know it, bucky's lips crash into yours, hungry and desperate, as his body traps you against the wall. the whimper that escapes your lips surprises you; you're kissing him back and hard.

"finally, that pretty little mouth of yours is being put to good use," he says breathlessly once he pulls back. your heart is racing out of your chest; you cannot believe this is happening.

everything finally makes sense. it wasn’t actual animosity between you two; it was concern. bucky barnes is fiercely protective of those he loves, and sometimes, he’s not very good at showing it. but with the huge grin plastered on his face after your shared kiss, you’re confident he’ll show love in new and better ways now.

on june 8, 2021, i published the first chapter of what would become the nighthawks fanfic. a year has passed, and so much has changed, but my love and devotion to this story has not. so, while it may appear self-indulgent, i’d like to host a celebration to mark ✨ 1 year of nighthawks✨
