History
Shela was born approxamitely 27 years before the events of the story in the market district of the city of Chibal. She is the youngest daughter of the merchants Akalad and Enkima. She quickly proved to be her father's favorite, curious and energetic.
While not noble, the family was quite wealthy, her father being one of a handful of traders working under and for the Bidani(Mercantile oligarch), Wadikir.
Her relationship with her mother proved somewhat more contentious. Unlike her elder sister, Suma, Shela showed absolutely no interest in marrying, at least not to a man. Shela's first crush was to her neighbor, a slightly older girl by the name of Kata, around the age of 12. Akalad took this as some variety of youthful silliness, a "phase". Enkima was far more concerned. The next three years would consist of Enkima parading potential suitor after suitor infront of her husband, in the hopes that he would choose one to marry his Shela. However Akalad, acknowledging Shela's disinterest in these prospects, would ultimately choose none of them.
In time, Shela's siblings would be married off, or else would go to start their own businesses as traders and sailors. In the meanwhile Shela remained in her parent's house, working as an accountant and assistant in her father's business dealings.
Disaster struck shortly after Shela's 18th birthday. Three of her father's four ships were caught in a storm off of the coast of Ikopesh. The resulting loss represented nearly 75% of the family's wealth, and worse, much of the lost cargo had been the product of Wadikir. When Wadikir came to call for these debts, he found Akalad empty handed. After a lengthy negotation, it was agreed, that rather than Akalad and his wife being pressed into debt slavery under the supervision of Wadikir for 3 years to pay for this debt, that Shela would serve in both of their places for a total of 6 years.
Shela's tearful goodbyes to her father were short-lived as she was dragged away to the Bidanlum to serve her father's sentence.
At the time Wadikir had recently earned the position as Lord of the Hall of Oaths, and was thus charged with acquiring those who could tend to it.
Shela's experience with accounting and organization under her father, while still being largely illiterate, made her an ideal candidate to sort and clean the sensitive tablets, scrolls, and books which made up the labyrinthian shelves and rooms of the Hall of Oaths.
Shela served in the dark, torchlit corners of the Hall, as a librarian of sorts, only emerging from her subterranean prison when it came time to fetch documents for visitors or for Wadikir.
As her sixth year of service neared, another tragedy struck. The Green Plague, so named for the pus filled boils the malady caused, roared through the market district of Chibal. The disease would ultimately claim the lives of Enkima, Akalad, and all of Shela's siblings, save for Shiru, who was far away in Korithia and far too busy with his work to deal with the woes of his younger sibling.
While Shela remained safe and protected in the Hall, when the time came for her service to be up, no one came to claim her. As such, Wadikir was more than happy to render the enslavement permanent.
And it is here that she first appears in the book.
Appearance
Shela is somewhat short and somewhat stout in build. Her complexion and hair are fairly typical of those of coastal Kishics. In all she is relatively plain as far as Kishic's go. Perhaps her most striking feature however, are her amber colored eyes, likely a trait inherited from some distant Ikopeshi ancestor, even if she lacks the distinctive purple-tinted hair of that people.
Personality
Shela is inquisitive and clever, highly organizational in her thinking. Before her time as a slave she was also quite witty, prone to sarcasm, and at times hot-headed. Unfortunately her time in the darkness severly diminished some of these traits.

An Excerpt
As Wadikir approached the doors were swung open, revealing the Hall of Oaths. Otilia gasped. The massive room, once a natural cavern, stretched out in front of them, It was filled with a labyrinthian collection of shelves filled with scrolls and boxes of tablets fired and unfired. Works of art, paintings, and statues peaked from amidst the walls of wood, clay, and parchment. Wadikir led them through the maze with trained ease towards the center. There, seated cross-legged upon a table of polished marble was a Kishic woman sorting through a pile of clay seals and stamps. “You two can help Shela with sorting these old seals. You will not be leaving this room until I give my blessing. Shela will show you your new living quarters. If anything is broken or out of place you will be punished appropriately. Shela will explain what you have to do. Have a good evening!” The merchant said. Once his blue robe had swished out of sight, Suru huffed. “What an ass.” “He is something, isn’t he?” Shela said as she looked up from the seal.  “It's usually not too terrible working down here, as long as he isn’t here.” Suru squinted at one of the small cylindrical seals. “How are you supposed to sort these?” “Ignore the letters; look at the symbols, the ones with bulls or sheep go in this pile, any with this little circle thing go in the other.” “Let me see that one, Suru,” Otilia said, reaching for the seal. She ran her fingers over the symbols. “It’s written in Kishic; the seal belongs to someone named Farut.” Shela gasped. “You can read that? Don’t let Wadikir see!” “But why? If I’m working somewhere like this, isn’t it better if I can read?” “No! Because then you can learn the secrets. If he knows there is a literate slave in the Hall, he’ll have you killed!” She squeezed Otilia’s wrist urgently. Otilia could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. Shela had a kind, round face, and large brown eyes that complimented her terra cotta complexion. Though short and somewhat plump, she moved with grace and poise as if her feet barely touched the stone floor. Her combed black hair had been tied back so as not to get in the way of her face. Her nose was smudged with dust though her clothes were spotless, Otilia’s stomach fluttered, and her heart raced.

Pretend like this was sent on Valentines
With dinner being done Tarhos excused himself to get something hidden within their closet where he knew Haru would never look for anything or maybe if he did he'd see it and leave it be. He brought it back to the living room, "Here. Just a little something for the occasion." It was a brand new real leather jacket complete with every little chain or stud Haru could ever want, "I seen it and well..." he rubs the back of his neck, "I thought you might like it. I know you already have one, but it's nice. It'll keep you safe when you ride."
── 𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 ── MODERN VERSE
Haruko paused his browsing of Netflix in order to promptly braid his hair; nimble fingers threaded the pieces and secured the end with a thin black tie. Only once his hair was pushed back did he notice Tarhos return back to the living room, a brow lifting as his boyfriend stepped into the light. Upon catching sight of the exquisite leather jacket that Tarhos was holding, his gaze brightened, and he rose to greet him:
"What is this? Tarhos - it - shit, it's beautiful."
The tattoo artist ran his fingers along the studs and quickly put it on with a pose, "How do I look in it?" The quip barely escaped his lips before he erupted in laughter and moved towards Tarhos to embrace him and press an affectionate kiss to his lips. He paused to relish the feeling of Tarhos softening under his fingers, a moment to appreciate the experience of their bodies melting into one another during the kiss. Initially, he intended for the gesture to be lighthearted; however, he now found himself pondering a proper way to thank Tarhos. He had a few plans, but he wasn't eager to spoil the current lovey dovey mood.
The corners of his mouth turned up in a sugary smile as he drew back to admire Tarhos' brilliant eyes; his own crinkling as his rosy cheeks darkened. Fuck the mood. "It's perfect, I'll wear it to work tomorrow." He promised with another brief kiss to his boyfriends lips, the tips of his fingers curled along the edge of Tarhos' sweats and a teasing croon left him, "That's if we'll even be able to walk tomorrow after the night I've got planned for us. Mmm~ Maybe we can break this in, what do you say, big boy?"
