SEUNGCHEOL

Ugh, Cheol is really hard. I kinda see him as any nation and also none at the same time. For the lack of other Water Tribe on the list, I’ll give him Water Tribe, but I don’t even think he’s a bender. He’d be a passionate hunter of the Southern Water Tribe, and a very good one, but not a bender. He’d always be eager to help out and fit his role as a true leader. He’s looked up to because he protects his people without fail. He’s good at strategics and known for his bravery. I see him fitting a role like Sokka’s father, but I don’t see him as anything glamorous like Water Tribe Royalty. He’s down to Earth and humble and honest. He leads and the people follow.

JEONGHAN

Jeonghan is an airbender. He’s witty and intelligent, and a great asset to his nation. He’d be in an Air temple close to the Earth Kingdom, and he often helps out with strategics if they ever need it. Definitely a kind and angel baby, but if there’s anyone who needs dealing with, he will personally take the task up. He’s world renowned and has allies and friends in every single nation. When he’s not busy, he’ll spend his time travelling around and immersing himself in the different cultures of the nations. He’s beaten Water Tribe hunters at their own hunt, evaded earthbender attacks in the ring because of how light he is on his feet. And his agility and wit proves to be useful whenever he goes head to head with a firebender. He can often predict their next moves and avoid attacks before they’re even fired at him.

JOSHUA

Joshua is Water Tribe!! Definitely a Water Tribe prince, or even a poor boy from the Northern Water Tribe whose parents couldn’t afford water bending lessons for him, so he would sneak around and watch lessons without getting caught. He’s mostly self taught, so he’s not exactly the best, but he can still hold his own. If he’s a Water Tribe prince, then he probably got bored with water bending very quickly as a child and started figuring out ways to skip his lessons lol. He knows clever ways to bribe or fool his masters into letting him slack off, but he also has to build enough skill to show at least a little improvement. He’s probably more interested in carving proposal necklaces to give to his future girlfriend than improving his bending skills.

JUNHUI

Jun is Fire Nation, and he’s extremely talented at Fire Bending. He probably runs a tea shop with his family and takes lessons on the side; just a regular middle class kid. He’s not aiming for a military position or anything high up, but he uses his skills to help him in daily life. He might have friends from places higher up in the city, and because of that, he got to take a visit to Royal Fire Academy for Girls. Definitely turns some heads— practically the whole school is crushing on him by the end of the 2 hour visit, and he enjoys the attention that he wouldn’t usually get at home. It’s safe to say that he’s invited back given the significant improvement in attendance and performance after his initial visit. 

SOONYOUNG

Another airbender, only because he’s so agile. Like the spider choreo really makes me see him as someone who just likes to swing around upside down for fun. He’ll play pranks on the older monks, or just anyone he can get his hands on. He’s a lot like Aang in that way. He definitely creates his own airbending moves, because he is a choreographer!!! Somehow takes a trip to the Earth Kingdom because it was his life goal to see a tigerdillo in real life. Once he meets one, he somehow adopts it, and settles down in the Earth Kingdom from there on! He’s perfectly happy, and can he even pose as an earthbender if he’s smart about it.

WONWOO

Anyone could probably guess that I see Wonwoo as Fire Nation. I wrote an entire 14.5k fic about it which is expecting a part 2, but I just think he fits it so much? Especially in a role like the Fire Lord or some notable higher up who is skilled at firebending and definitely owns a dragon (if we’re talking a time period before/during the dragon hunts). He’d be the type to just be a natural at it and reach a high mastery at an early age. He’s such a skilled fighter, and definitely knows how to control his flame. He prefers to study directly from dragons instead of old masters, whose teachings feel regurgitated and watered down, which sounds pretentious, but it’s one of the reasons why he got so good.

JIHOON

I see Jihoon as an Earth bender. He’s short and stout but HE'S SO BUFF. He definitely has the density in him to move some rocks, he’s practically built like The Boulder but without the height????? I definitely see him as part of the royal guard, but definitely not an Earth King. He might teach Earth Bending or get posted out on the coast near the Fire Nation or something— but he definitely has a military position. Somewhere where he can use his earthbending to its full potential. Not the most talkative, but definitely the most efficient, so he climbs the ranks like nobody's business and everyone knows to respect every word that comes out of his mouth. If you say even a word about his height, he’ll throw a rock at your head before you can finish the sentence.

SEOKMIN

It was hard to pick between Water Tribe and Fire Nation for Seokmin, but I think he’s ultimately Fire Nation. I see him as an actor for plays, and he definitely uses his firebending to win over the audience. It got to the point that even though he’s from a small town in the Fire Nation, he became a household name and got increasingly popular until he eventually found himself acting in front of the Fire Lord. Once he got rich enough from it, he got a spot in the most infamous acting troupe in the Fire Nation. His favourite role to play is, of course, the Dragon Emperor in Love Amongst the Dragons.

MINGYU

Just a bulky earthbender I don’t know what to say. He probably got recruited to some military position because he’s fit and can hold his own in a fight, but boy’s just really a sweetheart. He doesn’t enjoy smashing people with rocks, so he tries to get out of the military as soon as possible. He instead works as a carpenter of sorts? Builds elaborate structures with his earthbending, and has a surprisingly artistic touch to his creations. Popular with the older ladies because he is a gentleman.

MINGHAO

I see him as an airbender, but I cannot imagine him with a bald head LIKE HELP. But let's say he is, and for aesthetic purposes, keep the long haired Minghao. He practically floats and flies through the air with his airbendings. He’s probably more of a lemur guy than a sky bison guy. I can imagine him having 1 or 2 lemurs who he spends most of his time with. Obviously very light on his feet and into meditation. He’s one of those star students in the class that the teacher picks as an example for the other students to watch and learn from.

SEUNGKWAN

A waterbender, and he’s good because he focused and studied the traditions of it. He knows the importance of the basics, and when he’s teaching, he can get mad pretty quick if he catches a novice waterbender doing a technique lazily. He teaches them the hard way, making the floor an ice rink or slapping in the face with a water tentacle if they make a silly mistake. But he’s a respected master. (Not to say that he’s old, but he holds the respect of an old master). Also a great healer for the Water Tribe. He thinks it’s important for the men to not just learn how to fight with spears and slices of water, but also to heal the tribe, and he offers his lessons to the women of the tribe as well.

VERNON

Another Fire Nation boy. He’s so skilled he can redirect lightning and all that jazz. He’s a worldwide guy too, so he’s definitely familiar with the other nations and their bending to a certain extent. (Like Iroh, studying the Water Tribe helped him with creating new techniques within firebending). He has a dragon because he’s hot like that, and would hold master firebending classes lol. Definitely has connections to the Royal Family and I could even see him serving as a personal guard or something of that sort. His skills aren’t to be wasted, so he can snag a high paying position practically anywhere he wants.  

CHAN

Earth Kingdom kid from a poor family™, I mean it’s just so clear in my mind. I imagine his mom runs a corner store, and he likes to use his very limited earth bending skills to make the shop look prettier. If the wooden tables break down over time, he’ll earth bend a makeshift counter to display the trinkets for sale. He’s quite charming even though he doesn’t have much to say about himself. In the lower class of the Earth Kingdom, practically everyone knows him because he likes to go around and make new friends when he’s bored. He’ll help out the elderly if they need it, and flash a toothy grin to anyone he comes across.

I feel like you guys would have a Lego building handcam stream. No real reason it just seems right. You guys build the most intricate structure that it's honestly intimidating.

It's noticeable to everyone how much Shu loves streaming with you, because he laughs so much more. He's sillier goofier and more unhinged and having fun and the chat can feel the chemistry and positive energy a mile away.

At the end of the day though you both had fun either way (even if you can't sleep that night).

You're the voice of reason during cooking streams. Even if you're not a great cook you can't be bad as him. At the very least you manage to save yourselves from food poisoning.

You two also play silly co-op games like keep talking and nobody explodes. It's funnier when you both share a braincell and have to figure out how to work together to beat the game.

Mysta may not collab often, but you're his favorite person to collab with. You have plenty of misadventures in off collabs too.

Vox Akuma

You were the warrior royal. Always protecting others and standing up for what you believe in.

You and Vox would have cooking streams together. Whether you're good at cooking or absolute shit, you two will have fun goofing off in the kitchen and still make a meal that's at least edible.

You guys also have film discussion podcast like streams where you talk about the latest films. You discuss your thoughts and opinions about the film, but also deep things like symbolism and what the directors and actors were thinking.

OKAY I AM GOING TO WRITE THIS at some point BUT!!! The b99 thing that Amy tucks her hair behind her ears when she's around someone she likes but with Eddie.

Dustin's been around Eddie and his friends enough times and once, Gareth told him that if Eddie likes someone he tucks his hair behind his ear. They call it "Munson's double tuck."

Dustin's trying to wingman the two of them together when he notices the lingering stares Steve gives Eddie and the endless pet names Eddie calls Steve. He's a month into trying to set the two up and he's still actively waiting for Eddie to fucking tuck his hair, WHY HASN'T HE TUCKED HIS HAIR???

Finally, because he was getting desperate, he finally tells Steve that he knows he likes Eddie. Steve's confused but happy that at least he doesn't have to come out (and his kid loves him despite it) to Dustin. Dustin doesn't even care and asks if he's seen Eddie do the double tuck, even demonstrating what it is when Steve stared at him in confusion. One night, Steve and Robin goes to the Hide Out to watch Corroded Coffin perform. Just after they perform, as Steve is pushing down the crowd to get to Eddie, he sees Eddie talking to the stage manager and he fucking double tucks his messy hair. Steve's stuck in the crowd watching.

The next morning, he tells Dustin that it's over. That he has seen Eddie double tuck his hair, but only because he saw him do it in front of another guy. Steve looks so sad that Dustin uses his allowance to buy them ice cream.

The other half of this is Max and Eddie is getting close together after Vecna. Max always hanging out in their trailer, liking it far better than their empty one.

Max's just always there whenever Steve and Eddie hangs out. Sometimes she's just watching the TV while they hang out in Eddie's room. She just lives there now. When it's time for Steve to go, Eddie says his goodbyes, closing the door after Steve and Max watches as Eddie tucks his hair behind his ear, every time.

She picks up on this after two weeks, and once jokingly said, "If you keep tucking your hair behind your ears every time you hang out with Steve, it's going to fall off." So Eddie actively avoids tucking his hair behind when he's with Steve because Max noticed and if she did then Dustin and maybe even Steve would.

And if Max and Dustin just talked they might actually solve their problems and set the two up together.

In the end, it's Robin who finds out. Of course, she knows of Munson's double tuck, Steve has been rambling for ages about it, she even had to console him after that night in the Hide Out.

It happens when Eddie does his weekly visit of them at Family Video, and Steve already knows this so he brings an extra sandwich for Eddie to eat. When Steve tells Eddie he bought him a sandwich because he knows he's coming, Eddie turns beat red and as soon as Steve leaves to get the sandwich, Eddie unconsciously double tucks his hair and Robin gasps.

Steve's back with the sandwich and Robin's still standing there frozen, hand on her mouth, other pointing at a confused looking Eddie.

"YOU DID THE DOUBLE TUCK!!!"

Poor Steve's just heartbroken thinking, oh my god Eddie's in love with my lesbian bestfriend and Eddie's just getting ready to finally get a real murder charge because he's going to kill Gareth.

-He doesn’t easily let it show but it’s all coming from care for you, it’s actually a real struggle for him to know you’re being mistreated

-He takes initiative in making a meeting with your partner and very forwardly telling them to cut their crap, with calm threats and polite intimidation

-But he has zero qualms resorting to violence and/or treating them like any other criminal if they don’t take his warning seriously

Ben Hargreeves

-Even when he was the leader, Ben had never payed that close attention to his siblings personal lives, he doesn’t realise anything’s going on with you until he overhears some of the others talking about it, but once he’s in the loop he does take the matter seriously

-He alternates between inserting himself into the issue and badgering you with questions, and trying too hard to act like he couldn’t care less what’s going on with you

-He gets a bit frustrated by the fact that you seem to put up with someone like that (because he cares about you and he doesn’t know how to translate that in a healthy way) and will be brutally honest about it

-The next time he meets your partner he lays on the passive aggression and intimidation thick, but might wait for you to be out of earshot before he issues a direct warning, less of a ‘they better start treating you better’ warning and more of a ‘they better remove themselves from your life’ one

-He almost hopes they’ll argue back because he would find it unbelievably cathartic using his powers to back up his threats

Fei Hargreeves

-Fei is careful, she doesn’t want to scare you off and isolate you by ranting about how much your partner sucks, so she keeps it to herself and remains your confidante, but she’s playing the long game, offering you more and more advice and help over time

-She’s good at keeping an even temper but she’s really pushed to her limits whenever she interacts with your partner

-Though she has a talent for unnerving them without overt threats, just casually telling them what she’d do to ‘someone’ if they hurt you

-You’ve got a bird watching you most the time, always ready to step in, as she feels she has a certain level of plausible deniability if your partner just so happens to be mauled by birds

-Despite all her efforts to put an end to your relationship in order to do what’s best for you, she’s still sympathetic to your heartbreak and will be there to comfort you after your break up

Alphonso Hargreeves

-Alphonso isn’t the most perceptive or analytical person, he misses most the subtle signs, he notices you’re unhappy more but you deflect and he doesn’t think to push it

-But when he finally realises what’s going on because of something obvious your partner does he’s outraged and will try picking a fight on the spot

-He doesn’t usually act like it but he’s quite empathetic when it comes to the people he cares about and will be quite kind and gentle while talking about the subject with you

-He’s very insistent that you should break up with them, borderline desperate, and it kills him that you won’t

-He becomes very protective, and quite stubborn about it, trying to be by your side as often as possible and acting like a guard dog whenever your significant other is around

Sloane Hargreeves

-Sloane can really empathise with you, she can only imagine how sad she’d be to fall for someone who turned out to be so crappy, her own romantic ideals just give her all the more ammunition to judge your partners massive shortcomings and wish better for you

-While she’s nice about it, she isn’t afraid to speak her mind on the matter and tell you when she thinks your partners done something out if line and recommend you take some kind of action or at least confide in her

-If you do ever need comfort she is so there for you, she’ll spend days keeping you company, letting you vent, distracting you, giving you all the kindness you’ve been missing out on, whatever you need

-In general she just tries to be around you more, as to hopefully reduce your time around them and help you see more clearly

-She won’t do it lightly because she wants to respect your choices but if your partner ever goes too far in her eyes she has no issue literally sending them flying

Jayme Hargreeves

-Jayme does not understand how you keep ending up in these kind of relationships and why you’re not willing to end them after the first big offence, she seems almost bored on the subject but it actually infuriates her

-Not afraid to tell it like she sees it, she gives you kind of a hard time about not setting better boundaries or just plain breaking up with people but backs off whenever she seems too invested

-Even if the person you’re dating is on their best behaviour around her she’s tense and quick to aggression around them, it will not take much for her to get physical, if they give you just a little bit of attitude she’s seeing red

-She’s smart enough to handle the matter carefully if she absolutely has to though, or even do some research on how to best handle the situation, because despite how cold she’ll act she just wants what’s best for you

-She’s obviously not the best at pep talks (she’s not one for talks in general) but she tries to make it clear that you deserve better

Christopher Hargreeves

-Christopher cares about his siblings more than he’d like to admit, and he’s pretty smart, so it doesn’t take long for him to notice somethings wrong with your relationship

-He initiates a casual but concerned talk with you soon thereafter, he’s pretty blunt about his opinion but he doesn’t push you too hard, just letting you know that he’ll be there for you if you need it

-But he doesn’t let it go either, keeping an eye (metaphorically speaking) on your partner whenever their around, his change of color giving away his hatred of them

-Him and Ben are like a tag team for insulting them, even if you can convince the two to not be avert, your partner will hear plenty of Christopher’s beeping followed by Ben snickering

-Christopher tries not to use violence as a first resort only for your sake and he does a pretty good job controlling himself, but if your partner really steps out of line, he has no problem bringing his power out and they will know your suffering by tenfold

HC’s for The Knight/Tarhos Kovács working for Medieval Times:

Tarhos applied for the job as a knight the second he saw the ad in the paper. He went to an interview but didn’t exactly know what to say or do there, he just kind of stared at the interviewer in silence. Somehow, he landed a cleaning job!

Cleaning toilets and arenas is far from the excitement he had hoped for, but it’ll have to suffice for now. He makes sure to do his job well, always be on time and even work overtime sometimes.

The “knights” at the arena like to make fun of him for his silent demeanour, and the Queen sneers at him if he’s in her way while he’s mopping the floors. But it’s all worth it, because on Thursdays he gets to watch a tournament. A real tournament! Well, as real as it can be in this weird place, atleast.

His shift starts at 5pm and the guests arrive at 6pm. He makes sure that the arena is clean and neat for the knights about to duel, and when the duel starts, his break starts. So he has time to watch a bit of it!

The crowd cheering and hollering, the knights riding on their fast horses, the duelling, it all takes Tarhos back to the good old days.

One time, Tarhos was watching the end of a tournament and saw something despicable. The knight who was losing had suddenly pulled a real dirty one on the other knight, tackling his horse with his staff. No one in the audience seemed to notice, no one but Tarhos.

The losing knight was now winning, but Tarhos wouldn’t have any of it. Grabbing his mop, he ran into the arena without thinking, tackling the knight down to the ground and triumphing over him within mere seconds. He recognized this as one of the knights who had mocked him earlier that day, so he made sure the knight could see his big grin as he held up his mop in the air to the crowd’s cheering.

That’s how Tarhos got promoted to knight.

IN LIEU OF THE STRIKES

(which i am technically participating in but also i hadn’t had a writing job in like eighteen months before this and i was planning on breaking for the entirety of my degree anyways)

currently neither unions are calling for a boycott but if this goes on long enough, production will start grinding to a halt. personally, i am hoping this lasts long enough to get the tech crews, directors, and animators/cg artists/effects people also striking, because i am really hoping that that will get more of these fields unionised too and really scare the bosses into doing what we want. this industry makes hundreds of billions of dollars a year and those profits go directly into the pockets of shareholders that don’t fucking deserve them.

the point being: now if ever is the time to start catching up on the old shit. by which i mean anything you missed when it came out.

so my contribution here is sharing my current watchlists and also giving some recommendations for my favourite films and tv shows.

as for my own recs:

in terms of horror, i will always rec everything jordan peele. he is one of my favourite filmmakers of this century and he has yet to miss. although personally i would advise grabbing some friends and keeping the lights on for us. another favourite of mine is the original scream. i’m not so big on the sequels personally, but i’d advise giving them ago because many people love the entire franchise and i have heard excellent things about the one with jenna ortega. thoroughbreds is technically a thriller but my god was it one of the most underrated and gripping films i’ve seen in years. 5/5 stars. check it out.

in terms of comedy, i will never not recommend pride (2014) it is a heartwarming film about solidarity between different marginalised communities, based on a real organisation of queer people that raised money for the striking miners in the uk in 1984. it was also my gay awakening in more ways than one and despite the somewhat bittersweet ending gave me a lot of hope for my future. i also highly recommend my cousin vinny which not only has marisa tomei giving the greatest comedic performance i’ve ever seen (which she deserved best actress for, by the way, she carried that fucking film) but also amazingly accurate legal dialogue. another favourite of mine is the spy who dumped me which has me actual pissing myself every time i watch it. also, the first kingsman film is a masterclass in successful parody and cinematic proof that the only good parodies are made by the lovers of a genre, not the haters.

in terms of documentary, now is a great time to revisit david attenborough’s work (we stan that man on this blog i won’t hear a word against him) and be reminded of what exactly it is that our conservationists are trying to save. particularly a life on this planet is a fascinating documentary about his own journey and beautifully scored. the elephant whisperers won best short doc at the oscars this year for a reason. although i have my issues with my octopus teacher’s philosophy in certain places, it is still one of the most incredible documentaries i’ve ever seen. lewis capaldi: how i’m feeling now is not what you think but is definitely worth a watch. (also mandatory watching for any american that calls shrek’s accent scottish.) chasing coral on netflix is something i rewatch whenever i need reminding of why i’m doing what i’m doing.

finally in terms of tv, this is my daily reminder to everyone to subscribe to dropout it is well worth the money and for today what i actually want to recommend is total forgiveness which legitimately broke me as a person and is also one of the most candid and grounded depictions of the impact of student debt i have ever seen. i would also, however, like to put some people on some limited series/complete tv shows that absolutely fuck. firstly, maid came into my life at the worst time possible and sent me into multiple meltdowns and panic attacks but remains one of my top tv shows of the year. the last of us is actually worth the hype, as much as it frustrates my science brain. la revolution is the best thing to come out of france since pain aux abricots but also comes with about four hundred content warnings so check yourself before you wreck yourself with that one. alien worlds is not quite what i’d consider a documentary but is one of the most creative things i’ve ever watched and a really accessible show about ecology and exobiology, which i love. russian doll is a show that tore me into pieces and stitched me back together again laughing and crying the whole way. don’t do yourself the disservice of not watching it. the ethos of the good place is too good not to put on here. yes it’s been memed to hell and back but it’s genuinely one of the greatest tv shows of the century so far and found and carried such a fundamentally good message that i rewatch at least once every couple years.

For the record, my belief about these two being together preceded this YouTube comment. Why did I believe it? Well, just watch A Man and His Music with Ella and Jobim from 1967. Ella and Frank have an undeniable chemistry. They're uncharacteristically playful together (by that, I mean that Frank is "known" to be this hard guy and Ella is typically described as being incredibly shy and nervous. But there were no nerves on the program nor was Frank being a hard ass or a blow hard. I'll write an entire post about that show, so back to this comment)...

I love this comment 😅. And I've spent two months trying to verify the claims made in it. Let's go through each:

1. Did Ella ever perform in a hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach circa 1983? I have not found evidence of this although she has certainly performed on Ocean Drive in other, documented years. It would take archived Miami newspapers to really get the answer to this one, and I ain't near Florida.

2. "With a combo" - She performed from the 1970s on with a combo, so this checks out.

3. Favorite male singer is Frank Sinatra? Haven't done an extensive search on this, but her comments about Frank through the years would suggest so. She went to his concerts as much as she could.

4. Secret affair for over 20 years? The CRUX of the question! Here's my take, if this is true, what were the years? I'd say from 1955 to the mid to late 70s. By 1955 they were both divorced or separated (Ella divorced in 1953 and Frank and Ava separated in 1954 and finalized their divorce in 1957). So if we start with 1955, then they could've been together until the late 70s which is before she allegedly told this guy about her and Sinatra's past tense affair. Really, I think it was from 1955 to whenever Frank married Barbara. And to anyone who thinks Ella or Frank believed in fidelity, well, read any book about them. Even my girl Ella was with a few married men over the years, so that isn't something that would've stopped them from being together.

Furthermore, Ella had a thing for secrets. Her early life was a secret. She had other, secret affairs, specifically one with a pediatrician that lasted a long time. And then her secret marriage to Ray Brown and that Norwegian guy Thor Larsen, which no one can really say was real or not but everyone can say it was a secret. Plus, both Frank and Ella were extremely private to the end of their respective lives. So, I mean, they weren't contending with TMZ back then.

5. "Italian Restaurant Patsy's" - A real place that Frank visited frequently. I will edit this if I find evidence of Ella ever going there. Also, Ella is known for loving Italian food which was mentioned in the book Up Close: Ella Fitzgerald and in the interview she did with Brian Linehan in 1974. In the interview she says, when speaking about her cookbook collection, "I got a book from Venice, and I get that book and read about that pasta. And oh boy, it sounds so good. It reads so good." She continues, "I go to [my road manager's] house. His wife makes the best lasagna. Oh boy, can she make that."

(UPDATE) The owner of Patsy's has commented on how Frank would visit the restaurant and who he would bring with him. When asked if Frank would come alone, the owner said, "No, he was always with a big group. He'd have his friends. He brought the whole Rat Pack here [...] And he would bring a lot of his friends, either acting friends or music friends." Ella, in this, would certainly be considered a "music friend." Also, in the same video, the owner talks about how Frank used a private entrance to the restaurant to avoid fans and press. He also ate in a private room. I could totally see him and Ella using that private entrance and having a meal with no one knowing they were there, perhaps on a date, except for the owners. 6. "Catch a cab down to the Met and catch an opera" - This is very plausible as the Met is only a 7 minute drive from Patsy's. And of course, we know Frank and Ella love music.

(UPDATE) According to Phoebe Jacobs, Ella preferred to take cabs whenever she was in NYC, actually going so far as to fuss about not using cabs when other transportation was sent. I haven't found any evidence that Frank would use cabs, but I would guess that Ella would override him if they were out together, just based on how serious she was about taking cabs.

Who are your favorite TD characters and why? :]

Thank you for the ask. And I have 3 main favorites.

So Noah, Cody, and Courtney. NoCoCo. Lol

Let's get into it:

Noah:

When I say Noah is me, I mean he manages to encompass a lot of phases that I had in my own life.

When I was in middleschool, I was the "smart kid." And I was also bad at sports. So Noah's dodgeball elimination is like... uncomfortably familiar to me. I don't think his actions were "stupid" or "bad writing," nah it’s truth in television. As a kid I was TOLD to stay on the bench whenever possible, and let the real athletes perform. So Noah staying on the sidelines... nah that makes sense. He's internalized the message.

Even his tantrum at the end of the episode is familiar. Although I've never been that bad, there was a moment when I was playing badminton in gym. I lost a match, and I thought to myself "Well, I know more about X then he ever will. So who's the TRUE winner?"

It's so juvenile, lmao. Taking the "everyone has different strengths :)" and making it into “my strength is the Best.” 

Another thing that I like Noah for is for his... "vibes." He's always acting unimpressed, always like 'who cares' turning up his nose at joy. And that's how I acted my first year of college! (I was 17, so only 1 year older than Noah lol). Because I thought it made me cool or something. But it's just overcompensation, really.

And Noah being "smart," but never actually doing anything useful. Yeah... it happens. That was me junior year of college. Everyone is like "oh you were so smart in highschool," "you're the smart one," But you have nothing to show for it.

God, he's relatable. He's a mix of all the things I dislike in myself, including the "laziness" aspect. So by the very act of liking him, by writing stories where he is comforted, understood, told it's okay to be vulnerable - it feels like I'm loving myself.

Oh, and also Noah is funny af? I decided he was my favorite character before I watched Total Drama. I was watching compilation videos of "funniest lines," "most saveage combacks," or "TD being gay for 5 minutes" and Noah was popping off! Noah has some of the best dialogue.  And that appeals to another side of me I dislike - my judgemental side. So like.... 5/5 on the relatability scale.

Also, I think its funny I've not mentioned Noah's role in TD *at all*. Because he doesn't really have one? His job for TDI and WT is for him to comment on other people. That's it. And that’s fine, that’s the side-character life. No complaints.

I know some people say "Noah warned the guys about Alejandro." And like yeah, he did. But I'm pretty sure Owen and Tyler lowkey already knew. And then once Noah is gone, Owen does nothing about Alejandro? He has to be coaxed by Duncan into doing anything. And then Alejandro just flatters and hypnotizes him? And Tyler gets used for the Gwuncan plotline? So his warning does NOTHING for the show? Lmao.

I'm not even mad at this, btw. Because it doesn’t matter to me whether his sacrificed worked or not - I like Noah because I like me, not because he’s important. (Also Noah’s POC background appeals to me because I’m also POC, and I can project my ‘child of immigrants’ upbringing onto him.)

Cody:

Like a few days ago I explained to someone in dms why I liked Cody despite also hating him and thinking he's whats wrong with men in media. So gonna copy and paste my main points:

1) Although a lot of the things he does is bad (follow Gwen around, not take her NO's seriously) they do indicate some positive qualities: He's persistent, he's optimistic, and he's okay with setbacks. These are all good qualities that I do not have, and would make my life a lot better. And don't we all wish we had the confidence of a mediocre white man?

While Cody needs to learn how to STOP, we could all stand to be a little more shameless, and a little more willing to take risks. 

2)There's also smth really sad about him, and I'm not necessarily talking about his parents. There's a scene in TDI, where he asks Gwen out/about her bra. And she hits him in the dick with an oar. Which... fair, lol.

But Cody's reaction is interesting to me. He apologizes, (deserved.) And then asks *again*.

WTF? That's weird to me. It doesn't just signal entitlement. It signals that he's okay with physical harm - from the person he loves,  all in the mere hope that he'll end up with said person. And that's pretty fucking tragic imo. At least that's how I interpret it. Because I think most guys at that point would be like, "What's WRONG with you i was just COMPLIMENTING you, you should be FLATTERED!"

But Cody just goes with it?

And for futher proof for my interpretation, Cody ends up telling Sierra she's his best friend during WT. Despite everything she did - multiple cases of sexual harassment, drugging, forced marriage, etc...  Cody is still willing to keep her in his life, to keep her close. Because, think about it, she was the only person who consistently tried to help him. The only one who ever gave him any real compliments.

And that's sad. And also interesting.

Why would a guy like Cody, who in canon is presumably canonically cis, white, and straight, be so willing to take abuse in search of love?

Why is he so lonely? Who raised him to chase after affection like this? And what could his tale say about the problems of public society, and the potential dysfunctions of the private family unit?

And that's the beauty of Cody. Noah allows me to talk about myself, but Cody allows me to talk about the world around me. About sexism and entitlement, about classism, about societal expectations around "love," and "family," and how damaging they can be.

A lot of people see Cody as an "average white man," and if so... then the average fucking sucks and I want to talk about it, lol. I understand why others would be tired of it (and also I don’t think it’s women’s job to Make Men Happy btw. A big reason I don’t ship Cody with women.) But as writer, it’s really rewarding to explore his psyche while also providing a possibility for growth, a way out, and a happy ending.

Cody's also rlly adorable, especially in Total Dramarama. Like he's impossible to hate in that show. There's an episode where Cody risks life and limb to be considered cool by his classmates. There's one where he says "Now I have to live in the sewers *again*." I don't say this lightly, but he's the best character there. He's so funny.

Courtney:

Courtney, I got attached to via the actual show. I watched Action before Island... and she's just really cool? Her entrance is cool, and as I said repeatedly, I love evil woman. But beyond "wow girlboss😮," what else do I like about her?

I like her story. Her actual fucking story. Wow. I might be one of the only Courtney stans who likes how Total Drama handled her. Skdjsdk.

So in Island, we see her battle her class-monitor upbringing, and learn to break the rules. This is done through her BF Duncan. And overall, this is pretty standard "good girl meets bad boy and loosens up" faire. It's nothing special. (I watched Island when I was 20. So I had plenty of time to see that same story in YA romances. So... yeah. Like I said, nothing special.)

But in Action? We see her on the warpath. We see her take charge. She had taken charge in Island, but it was kinda innefectual. The joke was that she'd give orders, but things would go wrong. That she would barely be useful herself? But in Action? She takes thing in her OWN hands. She revitalizes Trent's team. She is also bad to Duncan.

And I think this could have worked, if she blamed Duncan for Harold's actions. Because Harold eliminated Courtney BECAUSE of Duncan. So she wouldn't be far-off. And also slide in a moment where her parents hate her new BF, or like. Imagine if Courtney told her parents she lost, because Harold rigged her out, but it wasn't her fault. He hated Duncan. And her parents are like "What did you expect? You date a delinquent and get suprised when trouble appears at your door?"

And so she's mad at Duncan for dragging her into his fight, for drawing her parent's ire.

No wonder she tries to "fix him." She wants to make him fit for approval, and also prove to HERSELF that she's the one with the control. That she can FIX him.

Some people hate how Courtney has no self-awareness and thinks she's a good person all the time. I fucking love it.

Courtney thinks she's HELPING. After all, she wants to be the best. So why shouldn't others? Why would Duncan have problems with a list of instructions? Courtney LOVES instructions. She loves bettering herself.

C.I.T. Counselor-in-Training. She wants to be a COUNSELOR. She wants to help people, she wants to be a Leader. But she's really bad at it! Because of instead of wanting people to accomplish their goals... she kinda wants them to accomplish what she decides their goals should be. She's not a mad scientist, she's a mad therapist.

This is why I think Action is her best season. Because that's when she goes OFF and really shows her worst potential. And I'm into that, because it gives me a lot to discuss - how the drive for success and efficiency can leave people broken. Can kill personal relationships.

I kinda LOVE that every positive relationship Courtney builds she ends up breaking. Duncan. Gwen. Scott. Gwen *again.*

I'd love it too, if she learned her lesson and developed but like. Out of context, it's so fitting. (In my fantasy rewrite of TD, she realizes something is off in WT, gets better in ROTI, and cements her character change in All Stars)

In WT, Courtney doesn't get to do much. She has the love triangle thing, which doesn't do much for her character because she doesn't learn anything from it? But she's still very funny this season. I don't like her thing with Alejandro. I don't mind CourtneyXAlejandro btw. I'd just rather them team up temporarily.

In All Stars, Courtney gets a new BF. Scott. She's mending her relationship with Gwen. It's looking good, maybe Duncan was the real problem all along. And then it collapses.

I read somewhere that TD writers just thought she couldn't be redeemed. Which is funny to me. Maybe All Stars was to show "no matter how kind to her people are, she will always put money first." It would explain alot, and if that's what they're going for, they succeeded. And ... I'm okay with that. I just wish it was more a struggle for her, or that it was better foreshadowed. But I'm not mad at the direction they chose.

So overall, Courtney is character who started out a good girl with a bad boy, turned out WORSE than the bad boy, and kept going. She did everything to *win*, yet never was a finalist. She burned three friendships for cash, yet never got it. That's poetic, honestly. She tries so hard to be a girlboss, but she's a girl-flop at the end of the day. And I like that. I really do.

Tl;dr: Noah's me, Cody's society, and Courtney is the industrial complex. Not really, because Courtney has never been profitable. She's like a failed start-up company.

BONUS: How I view their possible dynamics

I obviously ship Noah and Cody, as a kind of two losers with opposing strengths learn from each other, but also get on each others nerves. If you want to know more about how I view their dynamic, just read my fic.

Courtney and Noah are my "Do it right or don't do it all," duo. I don't care what their relationship is. Like they'd make great twins who hated each other. Science Olympiad rivals or partners. They'd even be a fine couple (if you're not writing them as related, that is EWW).

I like to imagine Courtney writing a long winded plan, handing it to Noah, and he just rips it in two and tells her he's not doing all that. Which is pretty mean tbh. I also like to imagine Courtney stepping on Noah's back while she forces him to do push ups. I imagine Noah and Courtney standing over a desk in class, asking you 'What grade did you get?" with identical smug smiles. I imagine them gossiping over Gwen together, being roommates, dissing each other's man. "You're dating trash you dug out of the gutter." "At least I'm not settling for a fun-sized McDonalds toy."

I imagine them interacting a lot, actually. I want them to be worsties who grow into besties.

Courtney and Cody is like... I'm split. They would make a really good Hallmark movie. Courtney the busy worker, and Cody who loves the Holidays. The story writes itself. But at the same time I love how they dislike each other in canon. Cuz Cody's a gwen stan and Courtney thinks Gwen should DIE. joking. And also because Cody keeps on being annoyingly sexist. Like in the Greece episode, despite having no athletic ability, he's like "let ME do it, *ladies*" and Courtney is NOT having it. So I guess they also have the range.

Maybe they don't get along until someone's like "Let's get the TWO best World Tour singers up on staaage!!!" And both Cody and Courtney stand up.

Title: The Moments Before

Description: Ralpho’s home closed down——for reasons that he doesn’t know or understand, and the rabbit dives into his older memories.

Ralpho leaned against Spring Bonnie, his ears gently twitching. The two were laying on the couch together, with the bunny attempting to find a rom-com that he’d mentioned earlier.

When he’d first arrived at the house, Ralpho had noticed that it seemed to only be him and Spring Bonnie—and Jinx, who was staying back in Oswald’s room, sleeping on top of his bed.

He’d always noticed how she didn’t seem to like Spring Bonnie all that much. Ralpho wasn’t sure how Jinx thought of him—but she didn’t seem to hiss at him, like how she did towards the bunny.

“Where’s Oz and them?” He’d questioned shortly after not seeing them. Jinx was here, but the rabbit also had failed to spot Fetch. Had he gone with them?

“Out visiting his grandma with Thomas and Jackie.” Spring Bonnie had written while bringing him over to the couch.

Although Ralpho was trying his best to stay focused on the bunny, and the movie that he had finally managed to find, the rabbit couldn’t help but feel... distracted.

No—more homesick, really. He felt both. Homesick and distracted. The rabbit missed the camp—he missed his home. He missed doing his job.

The reason for it closing down in the first place was still unknown to the rabbit. Back when he was still there, he had assumed that the camp had been doing well. What had happened?

Ralpho let out a sigh, shutting his eyes for a moment.

...

Alive? The rabbit blinked once, then twice, as he looked around the building that he’d just been brought into. I’m alive? His ears twitched gently, covering his eyes—causing the rabbit to move them.

There wasn’t much to see in the room that he’d been placed in, sitting against the wall. Yet, earlier, he’d heard a couple of voices. He didn’t know what they looked like. Only now, the rabbit was able to see.

Slowly, leaning against the wall, he started to try and stand up—although his legs felt all wobbly. He could feel his ears twitching once more—and this time, it was because someone was approaching.

Just as he fell back down onto the floor below, a door opened, and two people entered, making their way towards the rabbit. He watched, curious.

“Still looks real creepy...” The first one sighed, kneeling down in front of the orange rabbit. She was holding cymbals. She set one down, while taking hold of one of the rabbit’s hands.

“I don’t think so,” The second one gave a shrug, watching as his friend placed the cymbal in the rabbit’s left hand, then repeated the process with the right one.

The first one stood back up, and glanced between her friend and the orange rabbit. “Well, anyway,” She sighed, starting to make her way back towards the door. Her friend tried to keep up.

“...Who’re we going to have wear Ralpho for the whole... whatever they called it? I’m not doing it.” The second began to say something, but they were both muffled after going through the door.

Ralpho? For a moment, he felt something beginning to wag, even if it was quick—his tail? My name is Ralpho.

...

He was about to do the first Bunny Call. Before today, he’d heard a lot of what his job was going to be. It seemed that he wouldn’t do it to every cabin—just new people that signed up.

Ralpho glanced up at the clock on the wall. 4:56 AM. He heard the sound of footsteps, and then the sound of someone entering. It was Noah—the man that was assigned to wearing him and performing the job.

The rabbit remained still, not saying anything, just like how he usually was whenever someone happened to be with him. He allowed Noah to put him on. It felt a little strange.

“Alright, let’s get this done...” Noah sighed. To anyone else, his voice would’ve sounded a little muffled. Yet to Ralpho, it was still as clear as before he’d put him on.

Noah and Ralpho made their way out of the building, and towards the first cabin.

By the time they’d both reached the cabin, it was about 5:04 AM. Ralpho still didn’t know too much about his job—so, he watched and waited. This was his job. He’d need to focus and learn.

Before they ever entered, by looking through the nearby window, Ralpho could tell that there seemed to be about five people in there. All sleeping, although one of the five was moving around a little.

Then, that’s when it happened. Noah—and Ralpho—entered the cabin. The man began clashing the cymbals loudly. A scream could be heard, but Ralpho hadn’t been the cause—it had still been Noah.

His ears twitched a little bit, lowering ever so slightly, as the cymbals continued. The first three figures—all kids—one boy and one girl, all immediately sat up at the alarming noises.

When Ralpho saw them in the dark, they all looked relatively the same, except for the eye color of one of the three, and all of their pajamas. Triplets, he guessed.

The other two figures, both older women, sat up finally. The one with black curly hair seemed more awake—while the one beside her, with straight brown hair, looked more tired and annoyed.

She turned and stared at the other with the curly hair, who could only grin a little bit and snicker.

All three of the kids were beginning to laugh a little bit, and Ralpho couldn’t help but smile just a little bit. His tail wagged. Although, Noah hadn’t noticed any of that.

Noah had stopped all of the noise, and began making his way out of the cabin. Ralpho remembered that there was still about five other cabins that the two needed to get to.

Ralpho already loved this.

...

Ralpho laid there against the wall, watching the woman try to patch a hole in his leg. What she was using was yellow and white—just like his bowtie.

During a previous Bunny Call, when he and Noah had been heading back from it, Noah had tripped, getting Ralpho’s leg caught in something. When he managed to pull away, it ended up tearing.

That had happened a few nights ago, yet they hadn’t patched him up yet. Until now, that is. They’d all just been forgetting until today—but after the tear, he hadn’t been doing any Bunny Calls. Which was unfortunate.

The woman—who had a name-tag which read ‘Alexis’—was someone that Ralpho remembered. She was the one who had given him his cymbals. He’d seen her a lot. But, only now, did he learn her name.

“He needs to be more careful...” Alexis muttered to herself. “All that other stuff... and now while he’s doing this?” By the looks of it, she was almost done.

Ralpho remained almost entirely still—although, he couldn’t fully stop his ears from doing a little twitch here and there. Yet, Alexis didn’t seem to notice any of that.

“And... done.” Alexis sighed in relief, setting everything down. She lifted her head up, coming face to face with the rabbit, and visibly jumped in surprise, like she’d forgotten that he was what she was working on.

“Still creepy...” She frowned, slowly standing up, and beginning to make her way towards the door with what she’d brought with her. Although, before she left, Alexis glanced back at the rabbit.

“Uh...” Alexis sighed. She gave the tiniest smile to the still rabbit. “You’re... welcome for the patch up.” She shrugged to herself, before finally leaving.

Thank you. Ralpho thought, as he watched the woman leave. He glanced down at the patch on his leg. It looked nice, he liked it.

...

Ralpho wasn’t sure what this little boy was doing in here. Aside from himself and the child, nobody else happened to be. At least for the moment.

The boy, with long brown hair, and a blue and green eye, was sitting beside the motionless (aside from his ears, those always seemed to move rather frequently) rabbit.

He was crying. Ralpho didn’t understand why the boy was here, or the reason for his crying. He remembered seeing him, at least—a day or two ago. The boy had been apart of a family that went through a Bunny Call.

Aside from that, Ralpho hadn’t seen him until now. He knew the boy had a family—shouldn’t he be with them? What was he doing here? Had he gotten separated from them, somehow?

Ralpho’s eyes glanced towards the side of him when he felt something grab his arm. It was the young boy, seemingly clinging to his arm for comfort as he cried.

Ralpho frowned. What was he supposed to do? Should he do something? The rabbit had never really dealt with anything like this before—and, he had never fully interacted with anyone here.

He was thought to not be sentient. That he was just a simple mascot suit to be worn for Bunny Call’s—and that’s what he technically should be—he didn’t understand how he was alive.

He’d kept up the little act so far. If he dropped it, what would happen?

Yet, Ralpho wanted to try and do something for the boy, he just wasn’t sure what that could be yet. His only interaction with the children was only ever whenever he went to do his job. And he never stuck around long.

Then, the rabbit got an idea. Slowly, using his arm that wasn’t being held by the sobbing child, Ralpho began to reach up for his large hat.

Although, when he started to hear a couple of approaching footsteps, he dropped his arm. The crying boy turned to look at where the footsteps were coming from.

Four people entered the room—one of them was Alexis, while the other three, although Ralpho didn’t fully recognize them, knew that he’d seen them with the boy during a Bunny Call.

“Jay!” One of the three, an older woman, called out. To her left was, who Ralpho assumed, the woman’s partner. And beside them, was a younger girl—a teenager.

“M-Mama!” Jay hurriedly stood up, and rushed over to the three—Alexis moving out of the way of the little reunion.

His mom brought him into a hug, her partner joining the hug, while his older sister stood to the side, simply watching.

“What were you doing here?” Ralpho heard Alexis ask the young boy—Jay. He was wondering the same thing.

“Separated... couldn’t find them...” Jay responded, still hugging his mother. “D-didn’t know... what else to do... so came here...”

“But why?” His older sister questioned, raising an eyebrow.

Jay pointed towards the motionless Ralpho nearby. “I like him...”

His mother gave a little nod, before picking her son up, then glancing at her daughter and partner. “Let’s get going.”

Ralpho watched the family leave. Alexis glanced at him, before following the family out.

...

The rabbit huffed. He knew it was time to do his job. He knew it. Yet, Noah wasn’t here yet—where was he? He thought that the man would’ve been here already.

For a second, Ralpho thought about waiting a little longer—maybe Noah would be here soon. Although, the rabbit quickly decided against that.

It needed to be done now—his job needed to get done. Aside from when he’d been torn up for a couple of days, he’d never missed a Bunny Call. Although, during those few days, nobody had requested one, either.

Frowning, Ralpho stood up, grabbing his cymbals, and began making his way outside. If Noah wasn’t going to come, then the rabbit supposed he’d have to do it himself.

...

“Again?” Alexis muttered to herself, staring at the hat in her hands. There was a tear right in the middle of it. After another Bunny Call—when he hadn’t overslept—Noah tore something again.

She’d already patched up Ralpho’s leg and arm tears. This was the third time she’d done it. But, at least it wasn’t happening more often. This time, it seemed to be going much quicker.

During the last few incidents—with his leg and arm—Ralpho had been able to feel it. He wasn’t exactly sure if it was pain, or something else—but he hadn’t liked it.

With the hat, he hadn’t realized that it had gotten torn, at least not until Noah had to pick it up after it fell, and both of them noticed it.

“Done. Here you go, Ralpho,” Alexis yawned, placing the hat, which now had a blue patch stitched in the middle, back on top of the orange rabbit’s head. She struggled for a second, before managing to put it through the ear holes.

“Let’s just hope that’s the last tear you get.” She muttered, standing back up. For a moment, as she looked at the rabbit, she thought that his grin was growing... just a little.

Although, she was tired, so she didn’t think much of it. She’d stayed up for so long. All she wanted to do was go to sleep. Giving a half wave to the motionless rabbit, she left the room.

...

They’d left him. Ralpho didn’t understand. Everything had been fine—until he heard Alexis and all of the others discussing something as of recently. Then, it happened.

The camp had closed. Hadn’t everything been going well? Ralpho frowned. He’d heard occasional discussions about something with the camp—but he didn’t know what exactly they were about.

Then, simply a week later, Camp Etenia had closed. It seemed so sudden. When he’d woken up from a little nap in the early morning—even if he didn’t need sleep—something was off.

Everyone, and practically everything (at least somewhat important things), was gone. Although, Ralpho himself was still here. Nobody had decided to take him.

He’d settled on staying there for a couple of days after that—but nothing had ever happened. It had just been him there—confused and bored.

The rabbit’s boredom was part of the reason of what he did next: leave. After thinking it over, Ralpho had settled on leaving the camp. It was his home, yet he didn’t have anything else to do any longer—he didn’t have his job anymore.

Ralpho was still wandering around, he hadn’t left the camp all that long ago—if he looked behind him, even if it was a little far back, he could still easily see some of it. Ralpho sighed.

What was he going to do now?

The orange rabbit opened his eyes, and glanced towards his right side. Spring Bonnie had pressed on the rom-com, although it was paused at the moment—he was fiddling with the remote, wanting to check something.

He felt Ralpho shift, and turned to look at him. The bunny smiled, and Ralpho smiled back at him. Gently, his tail wagged for a moment or two. “Ready, Spring?”

Spring Bonnie nodded, and turned back to the TV, as he finally finished fiddling, and pressed play on it. Ralpho glanced between him and the film that had started to play.

Ralpho missed the camp—he missed doing his job, yes, but in a way, the rabbit was also somewhat glad that it had ended up closing down.

He loved being around Spring Bonnie—loved him in general—he had a full list somewhere that contained everything he loved about him—Ralpho wanted to show him that later.

The orange rabbit loved being with the bunny and the rest of his family. He wasn’t sure if he’d have met him and the others if the camp hadn’t closed.

Ralpho was glad that he was here right now with Spring Bonnie and his family. The camp closing had lead him to wander—to end up in the town—to end up running into the bunny.

Before Ralpho could start thinking too much of the possibilities, he felt Spring Bonnie open his coat a little, and wrap his arm around the orange rabbit. Both Spring Bonnie and his coat were warm and comfortable.

Ralpho smiled, tail wagging once more. “Love ya, Spring.”

Call It Love (2023)

When is a revenge story not a revenge story? When you Call It Love instead!

This show could have turned into a trainwreck at several points. Instead, it managed to surprise and (occasionally) delight. While I had some quibbles with the ending, I think it's good to focus the show's strengths.

What Worked

The characters are what made the show. Even when the plot meandered a bit, and the pacing slowed down, the characters pulled you through. Because they were relatable and interesting. Even when they made questionable choices, they were always the choices you might have wanted to make in the situation, even if you knew better.

That comes through in the first few episodes where the FL crashes her estranged father's funeral and makes a scene just to try and get some kind of revenge. And the ML takes money from his estranged mother even though he knows he shouldn't. And the entire family just decides to leave their home of twenty years rather than calling a dang lawyer to figure this out. And let's not even talk about the ex-girlfriend who decides to try and patch things up with her old flame by secretly moving in next door...

What Didn't Work

The last three or four episodes just didn't have enough story going on. And so the audience ended up watching the characters walk artistically through the streets of their neighborhood while we waited for them to do the thing we all know they're going to do. I would honestly rather they have showed the characters discussing and reacting to finding the will—or just talking at all—instead of padding each episode with 10 minutes of walking. I also got annoyed with the way they dragged the main love story out in the last two episodes. I can understand needing space to figure out some of the messed up stuff going on, but there was no reason for them to (spoilers) need to take an entire year off to figure this stuff out! I think the writers just had the last scene in mind and pushed the ending towards it instead of justifying it.

Lastly, Disney FFS get some real subtitles, I'm glad they have close captioning (in English no less), but they need an option that cuts out the [Dongjin smacks his lips] nonsense. Was it a push to make people listen to the dubs instead? Are they just too cheap to pay someone to do both? Who knows. Also, I think the translators did an okay job, but there were times when I was like "that's not what they really said, was it?" and I don't even know much Korean.

The Performances

The writing on this show is a little sparse. The writers chose to make people talk like real people most of the time, which means that so much of the characterization is on the actors and their delivery. And they did a good job across the board.

Kim Young-kwang as Han Dong-jin. Dong-jin is a very private, internalizing person and it would easy for an actor to play him too stiff and stoic. Kim Young-kwang did a very good job of letting people see inside what he was thinking and feeling mostly through subtle gestures and changes in tone. He wasn't magnetic like alot of other leads, but he still had a way of bringing people in and quietly getting their attention. At least he did for me, though maybe there were other people who got bored and stopped watching after a few episodes!

Lee Sung-kyung as Shim Woo-joo. Woo-joo was another quiet person, though she's someone who is quietly angry at the world and sometimes has no filter. She did a great job portraying this through most of the series. I think she had trouble with some of the softer scenes towards the end of the series. I haven't seen her in other shows, so I can't tell if it was a direction problem or if she just didn't know how to portray someone who is loose and comfortable, but there were several scenes when it felt like I was watching a statue. I'll still enjoy watching her next project, whenever that comes out.

Sung Joon as Yoon-jun. This was a case where the second lead couple was more fun to watch than the first lead, and Sung Joon's performance was a big reason why. When the show was at its most melodramatic, Yoon-jun just took it in stride and kept it all grounded. I especially enjoyed the way he and the second lead Kim Ye-won played off their slow moving friends-to-lovers arc, but the friendship with Shim Woo-joo was also nice, and I loved to see that kind of non-romantic friendship portrayed in a show.

Kim Ye-won as Shim Hye-seong. I enjoyed her role in Suspicious Partner even though the show annoyed me overall. She was a much more relatable character here. I looked forward to her scenes because you could never tell what Hye-seong was going to do. The character was interesting and multi-faceted and Kim Ye-won did a good job bringing that through.

Nam Gi-ae as Ma Hee-ja (aka the "Evil Mom"). I've seen her in a number of similar roles and this isn't too different from her character in Encounter (for example), but I feel like she got it right this time, where she was too over-the-top in others. I think the writing helped, but ultimately it's her performance. She did an excellent job portraying a believable type of narcissist. She was completely shameless and selfish when she needed to be, and also weak and pathetic when she needed to be. Sometimes she was only in the show for a few minutes, but it felt like a long time because she was so intense and interesting. Great job playing a terrible person.

Kim Hee-jung as Kim Hyun-Joo (aka the "Good Mom"). I saw her briefly in Start-up and her role there wasn't very memorable, but she did a great job here. The main characters all spent the first eight episodes or more threatening to call her in when they felt Woo-joo was out of line, and when Hyun-joo finally showed up you could see why they were all intimidated! A strong presence and definitely one of my favorite characters on the show.

Jang Sung-Bum as Sim Ji-Gu. I really liked the character. The long suffering younger son with two older sisters is kind of a comic staple in these dramas, but he still managed to make the role fun and interesting rather than cliche. He also did a good job with the musical interludes, though that was another part of the show that felt a little indulgent. Still a fun actor to watch.

Ahn Hee-yeon (aka Hani) as Kang Min-yeong. In a different show, the "clingy ex-girlfriend" character could be a second antagonist, but the problem is that she's pretty great and everyone likes her! That's what happens when you cast a k-pop singer and just let her be charming! Hee-yeon wasn't a show stopper, but she did a good job with the role she was given, and I liked where the writers took her character. It was nice to see a story where sometimes decent people end up making terrible decisions (for reasons that make sense), and it's how you move forward that matters. There really wasn't much for the actor to do in the last 4 episodes, but it was nice to have her around for most of the show.

Jun Suk-Ho as Choi Sun-Woo (aka "Lazy Boss"). I enjoyed this character and the actor was obviously having alot of fun with the role. It was nice to see the character go from being part of the problem at the start of the series, to being a strong and supportive character by the end. I also liked his friendship (though maybe more?) with Min-yeong and how that changed over the series as well.

Kim Mi-Hwa as Sim Woo's Aunt. They didn't even give her a name! Just a fun comic character that I would have liked to see more of. The actor did a good job giving a personality to someone whose role in the show was mostly to deliver important news to the main characters.

Everyone else. They actually did a good job making the corporate backstabbing interesting. The actors playing CEO Shin, Cha Young-min, and all the minions were suitably slimy. The other office workers had memorable moments even when they kind of blended together. I even thought the other colorful characters (like the new "Bad Boyfriend with a Gambling Problem" and "Boyfriend's gambling buddy") were fun to watch. With a few exceptions, this was a show that treated its minor characters well.

TL;DR:

The overall message of the show, that revenge is ultimately empty and you need justice and reconciliation to move forward is nice. There were times when the show was a little slow and indulgent, but the characters and their stories always brought me back for more. Overall, an enjoyable drama.

It had been some months. I was getting used to the new life without my old memories. I still had some flashbacks. But most of them were confusing and I couldn’t make any sense out of them. So, avoiding them were better. So far, everything seemed to be okay.

I was showered with love and affection from my family. My step father would bring me chocolates, ice creams and other snacks every day when he returned from the office. My mother would often ask me what I wished for dinner.

But the boys were a little too extra. They had been pampering me with flowers, gifts and attention. It was cute but embarrassing at the same time. I would put a few words on their behaviors.

Jungkook would not let me sit with Nina in the class. He would always save a seat for me beside him and Nina had to sit behind us. He would follow us everywhere from the cafeteria to the playground. Slowly Nina started to like him too and now we were kind of a golden trio of our class.

After school I had dance classes at evening where I would meet Hoseok and Jimin regularly. They would come to watch me perform whenever they were free. As I was always late to leave they would wait for me after their practices were over and walk me to my house every day.

Jin would frequently send me special foods that he cooked with his master-chef quality. I would sometimes go over to their house with Nina for dinner. He would also teach me how to cook different items. But cooking with Jin mostly ended up with both of us being frustrated; him, for not being able to teach me and me, for being too clumsy to do it.

Namjoon would lend me his favorite books. We would often sit together and read. Those times we wouldn’t really talk much, but being around him was somehow comforting.

Whenever I was looking forward to having some fun, I would always go to Taehyung. On the contrary, whenever I was feeling down and didn’t want anyone being too loud, Yoongi would be my comfort zone.

Somehow, the boys had grown on me by the time. Now I felt like I wouldn’t be able to be apart from them at any cost. I knew, I would gladly sacrifice myself to save them again just like I did before.

I was aware about the fact that some of the students didn’t like me and they talked behind my back. Nina had suggested me to avoid them and so I did.

But one thing didn’t go unnoticed. Almost everyone would call me and the Bangtan Boys ‘Snow White and the seven dwarfs’. I knew they were probably teasing me because the boys were giving me a lot of attention than needed. But one day I heard a group discussing the matter. “Think about the irony,” one of them said, “a black girl being the Snow White.” Then they started to giggle.

I wouldn’t say that I didn’t care at all because I actually did. By the end of the day, I would sometimes cry myself to sleep thinking about how mean they were toward me.

I told Yoongi about the matter. He remained silent for some time. At last, he said, “They don’t really know you. Don’t let them put you down.”

There was something which was confusing me. And that was the fact that whenever Jungkook tried to defend me they would say stuff like, “Since when are you taking her side?” Jungkook would go red in the face and won’t say anything else.

Jin always gave me a ride home from school since he was in charge of taking Jungkook back home. So, Jungkook and I would always wait for him to arrive. On such an occasion, one day, one boy from our class approached us and started to cut jokes about how I was such a drama queen and that I was just pretending to have an amnesia to get special treatment from the boys. When Jin came to rescue us, the boy asked him, “Are you guys worshipping her as a superhero now?”

That made Jin really angry and he started to scream at the boy. He warned him not to do the same mistake again. Otherwise he would have to say goodbye to his dear legs. That scared the boy off.

I was trying to put the pieces together. Everything seemed to point to the fact that the Bangtan Boys used to be one of them. They had also made fun of me before the accident. But it was hard for me to imagine that. These boys were too kind to me. How could I believe that they were also capable of such cruelty?

I decided I would ask Nina. I had to know the truth. THE WHOLE TRUTH...

I sat motionless on my bed, tears rolling down my cheeks. I couldn’t believe what I had learned from Nina earlier today.

I practically begged Nina to tell me exactly what kind of relationship I was in with the boys before my accident. She told me that the truth might hurt me. But I was determined to know it anyway. And so she told me everything.

I was being bullied by the entire school. When Nina joined, it was reduced a little though not wholly. By the time, people got bored as I kept avoiding them. But the Bangtan Boys had been especially mean toward me and their teasing never stopped until the accident. They had been regretting their acts since then.

Nina told me, “I personally hated them too. But I think they have really changed a lot. That’s why I kept the truth away from you thinking they might deserve a chance.”

I didn’t say anything further to Nina about the matter. I came back home. I couldn’t sleep as I kept thinking about the boys all night. Then, it suddenly clicked. All the memories seemed to be poured down to my brain all at once.

I sat up on my bed, my eyes closed. The last thing I remembered was the scene of the accident.

ok some assorted romangrace thoughts for @rckstrgrlfrnd

i feel like they got together bc they get along SO WELL. like just based on how they were roasting shiv at thanksgiving it seems like theyve never had a hard time making conversation or anything like they can just chat for hours on end

i genuinely don’t remember if the show says what grace does for work but i hc that she was like a PA at waystar studios when roman was out in cali and she like had to bring coffee to him and frank and roman made some snarky comment and instead of ignoring it like most of the workers did she sassed back and it caught his interest

i think they slept in the same bed but didn’t cuddle but would be like fairly close. like they both slept towards the middle of the bed

i bet they both have insanely good interior design taste and their apartment was SO BEAUTIFUL

considering grace has a daughter that roman is clearly comfortable enough around to like hug and talk to and that the family seems to know and has seen her before i would hc that by the pilot they’d been together for a while- maybe 2 years or so? and are very much in sync. like they know what the other is thinking most of the time.

i don’t think roman really has friends so i think grace was kinda his best friend? someone that roman could go to for serious stuff and really air his feelings to but also watch stupid tv with

actually now that im saying it i think they watched wipeout together and died laughing whenever someone fell or got horribly injured

i think they also had a “show” that they absolutely swore not to watch without the other and if the pilot is in 2018 and im going with theyve been together 2 years im gonna say their show was westworld since it started in 2016

i also think roman absolutely adores isla like if shes 7 or 8 or so in the pilot roman wouldve met her when she was 5/6 or so and so didnt have to deal w like potty training or any gross little kid stuff (bc i think hed hate that) but she has her own little personality at that point and i think hed be able to tone himself down enough to be okay around a kid. i think that he plays dolls with her and then the dolls end up dying in horrible ways but isla thinks its hilarious

i dont think isla sees him as a dad but definitely as a Trusted Adult- like he’s listed as a contact at her school in case she needs to be picked up

i hc that grace doesn’t come from money in the same way roman does but that she’s upper middle class- both parents worked but maybe her dad was a doctor so they had a decent amount of $. but obviously compared to the .01% roys shes SO much more down to earth and “real” and i think roman really really likes that about her

i also bet they liked to get wine drunk and bitch about people. i bet grace had some REALLY mean things to say about tom and roman thought it was fucking hilarious

i think that they have the arrangement that tomshiv wanted but could never actually accomplish- like grace does go off and have sex with other men which keeps the pressure off roman to perform BUT they present as a united front. Roman & Grace.

How to capture the interest of Martin, Abraham and White face?

That's an interesting question seeing as they are all such different characters. Different motives and views on the world, I wonder if there might be an underlying theme.

Martin:

In all honestly, he'd have to find you pretty. Or atleast captivating in some sort of way. What starts as simply searching for a victim can easily turn to full blown obsession. It wasn't even about the blood anymore, he just wanted to know you. What was your name? How did your voice sound? Would you ever consider him if you knew?

I think he has an eye for people's demeanor, he learned to read them because he had to. I feel like he might be attracted to someone who had the same somber sort of air. The way they drifted down the streets like a ghost seemed eerily familiar to him.

A loner. He wasn't much for crowds, and he found the bar scene utterly unappealing. He rarely saw you conversing with others. You went to work, ran errands and went home. It really made him wonder about you, were you just as lonely as he was, or simply an introvert?

If the two of you ever ran into each other accidentally, it'd make all the difference if you actually saw him. If you spoke to him like a real person, and asked questions--he'd be eager to spend more time around you.

Whiteface:

I feel like he can read a person just as well as he can read a crowd. An avid performer, he knows how to wind people up, and captivate them at the same time. Vibe check much? I think the jester knows immediately whether he likes a person or not. It's more about energy and how he feels when he's around you. He was always overjoyed when he spotted you in the crowd.

I don't think he cares that much for looks, for him it's all about personality. Whether or not you seemed bothered by his silence, or accepted it. If you actively attempted to seek him out.

Consistency. You always seemed to show up at the same spot, off tho the corner during all their performances. Even while motorcycles flew over ramps, and the crowd jeered--your attention was on him. Glancing over as he stood in the sidelines to observe the show,he could feel the weight of your attention.

As good as he was with picking up people's energy, when it came to other things he was completely oblivious. He didn't know why you were always staring at him, but he didn't mind it. It was quite the opposite really. It made him feel sorta funny, but he lit up whenever he saw your face. When he found himself growing a bit fatigued from his tricks, the fact that you were watching was a surge of adrenaline.

Abe:

I want to say the obvious, that it's all about looks, but that's not entirely true. You'd have to prove to be some sort of challenge. Whether you were his captive or not, there'd have to be some form of resistance. Whether it was refusing to crawl over at his command, or simply remaining unphased by his threats. You were a fighter, and he liked that about you. Didn't matter, he would eventually get his way.

If your only interaction was him observing you from the streets, it might be more about looks. "What d'ya think of that one brother?" "Cute..she's real cute." He has to find you aesthetically pleasing, but if you seem to be on high alert, it was all the better. If you seemed careful, street smart in a way--it was almost too perfect. The fact that you had no idea he'd been on your trail for nearly a week amuses him to no end.
