The Most Powerful Hack to Make Your Readers Cry

You’ve seen it all: show, don’t tell, plant a visceral image in the reader’s brain of the environment/character, write a complex character arc with lots of growth and setbacks, establish deep relationships, high stakes, etc.

All the advice for making readers cry I’ve seen so far is basically that list. But, while those things are absolutely important, I find that the thing that always does the trick, whether as a tipping point or in and of itself, is this:

THE CALLBACK!

Before we move on, this is an ANALYSIS heavy post, so all the book + show examples contain spoilers!!

So, what do I mean by a “callback?” Think of Chekhov’s gun, but, here, you use the gun to pierce your reader’s heart. As a refresher for anyone who needs it, Chekhov’s gun is just a rule in writing that anything you introduce in the book should play some role in the plot.

Specifically, the name comes from the example that if a reader introduces a gun in the first act, it MUST go off later, (maybe, say, in the third act). For example, in the TV show Breaking Bad, the protagonist Walter White prepares a vial of poison (ricin) that he wanted to use to eliminate an opponent early on in the series. After the assassination attempt falls through, the ricin makes an appearance again in the very last episode of the show, when Walt finally uses it to kill another opponent.

Got that? Alright, onto the examples of successful, tearjerking callbacks:

1. The Last Olympian (Rick Riordan); “Family, Luke, you promised.”

Context: The character Annabeth says this line. Years ago, Annabeth had run away from home, and Luke had effectively adopted her into a found family with another kid named Thalia. Common reason for leaving home = parental trauma! Yay! He promised Annabeth that they would be each other’s “family” from now on.

Now: Kronos, the antagonist titan, has possessed the demigod Luke and uses his body to strike Annabeth, injuring her. She’s also holding a dagger that Luke had given her when she joined his “family.”

Significance: her words + the dagger are a mental + physical reminder to Luke of his promise. They force him to recognize the sheer degree of his current betrayal by bringing him back to a different time. The fact that their found family only happened because of parental trauma bringing them together makes it worse—Luke felt abandoned by his Olympian father, Hermes. Now, he realizes that he basically did the equivalent to Annabeth by joining the titans.

2. Les Miserables (Victor Hugo); Jean Valjean’s death

Context: At the beginning of the book, the bishop had caught Valjean trying to steal candlesticks to sell. Instead of handing him over to the police, the bishop told the police that he had given them to Valjean, saving him from arrest and showing him mercy. This changed his life forever, kickstarting his character redemption arc.

Now: Jean Valjean dies surrounded by his loved ones, remembered as a benevolent man who bettered thousands of lives. He’s surrounded by light from candlesticks that once belonged to a bishop.

Context: Valjean had once taken in an impoverished woman named Fantine, showing her mercy and promising to take care of her daughter, Cosette, after Fantine died. Valjean then rescued Cosette from abusive quasi-foster parents (it’s a long story), raising her as his own daughter. This furthered his arc by allowing him to finally understand how unconditionally loving someone feels.

Now: Valjean describes Fantine to Cosette, who never knew her mother.

Significance: Both examples throw readers back to much earlier points in the story before the completion of Valjean’s character arc. In a way, this final scene feels like an external manifestation of his kindness paying off; both he and the reader feels a sense of accomplishment, relief, and just a general “OMG WE MADE IT.” Readers don’t feel cheated, because they were with Valjean every step of his 1,400 page arc. The weight of it all just crashes down on you...

3. Your Lie in April (anime); Kaori’s letter after she dies

Context: Kaori’s entire plot significance is that she helps Kousei, a piano prodigy who can’t play piano anymore due to traumatic parental memories associated with it, play again—but also, just to help him enjoy life again after a turbulent upbringing. She meets him a year before she dies of a medical condition, and her free spirit + confidence influences him to find beauty in life and music again. They basically do a crap ton of crazy funny stuff together lol

Now: Kaori has died, and she leaves a letter to him. Among other general confessions and thoughts, she references things they did and memories they shared: she says, “sorry we couldn’t eat all those canelés,” reminisces about jumping with him off a small bridge into the stream below, “racing each other alongside the train,” singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as they rode the bike together, etc.

Significance: Yes, the nature of the letter is just sad because she’s revealing that she loved him all along, apologizing for not being able to spend more time with him, lying that she didn’t like him (to spare his feelings b/c she knew she would die soon), etc. BUT, these small details highlight exactly how many experiences they shared, and the depth of their relationship. Thus, they emphasize the significance of her death and the emptiness it leaves behind.

4. Arcane (show); “I thought, maybe you could love me like you used to, even though I’m different.”

Context: Character Jinx says this in the last episode to her now estranged older sister, Vi. Without going into the crazy complex plot, basically, orphans Vi and Jinx used to care for each other before a bunch of crap went down that got them separated. They then grew up on opposite political sides; Jinx grows up on the side of the underbelly city rebellion, and Vi grows up working on the side of the richer city that essentially oppresses the undercity. Thus begins the development of their opposing viewpoints and work environments, to the point where they always meet on opposite sides of a political battle, never able to come together as a family or understand each other again.

Now: After a super dramatic confrontation, Jinx reveals that although she wants Vi to love her like she did before their separation, she knows it’s not possible because “[Vi] changed too.” She finishes with, “so, here’s to the new us” before blowing up a political council meeting a few blocks down filled with people Vi sides with. Oops! This cleanly seals the fate of their relationship as something basically irreparable.

Significance: This callback isn’t through literal flashbacks or items like in the previous examples. Jinx’ lines are enough to bring back images of their childhood to the audience’s mind. Now, the audience subconsciously places this image of: 1) two sisters so different, hurt, and torn apart, right next to 2) the image of two sisters as innocent children who loved each other and would care for each other no matter what.

Why do callbacks work so well?

If you’ve noticed something in common with all of them, you’re right: they remind audience of a time BEFORE the characters have come so far on their arcs, developed, and put on so much more emotional baggage.

Callbacks force the audience to SUDDENLY and IMMEDIATELY feel the weight of everything that’s happened. The character’s anguish and overwhelming emotions become the audience’s in this moment. Callbacks are a vehicle for the juxtaposition of worlds, before and after significant development.

This works because we, as mortals, fear IMPERMANENCE the most. We fear LOSS. For us, time gone is time we will never get back; callbacks make us face that exact fact through a fictional character. A lost moment, time period, or even part of oneself may hurt as much as losing a loved one, and nothing makes humans grieve more than the realization of a loss. A callback slaps the audience in the face with the fact that something was lost; loss hurts so much because almost 99% of the time, what’s gone is gone forever.

Of course, a good callback requires good previous character development, stakes, imagery, and all that jazz, but I thought I’d highlight this specifically because of how under covered it is.

I’ve been binging general media lately: I finished Death Note, Your Lie in April, and Tokyo Ghoul all within like a month (FIRST ANIMES I”VE EVER WATCHED!!), reread lots of Les Miserables, analyzed a bunch of past shows like Breaking Bad, watched a bunch of My Little Pony, worked to fix up my old writing... and that’s not even all! The amount of times I’ve CRIED while enjoying the above media and so much more honestly just inspired this post.

Like, no joke, my eyes were almost always swollen during this period whenever I hung out with my friends and it was so embarrassing help

Personally, I just find that this method works super well for me, and I watched a bunch of reaction videos to these above scenes (and read book reviews on the book scenes I mentioned), and it seemed that just about everyone cried during these parts. That’s when I realizes that the callback might also just be a universal thing.

Requests are OPEN

Drop your request in my ask box, and I'll try to write it as soon as possible. Keep in mind that this is a hobby, I have a life outside Tumblr, respect my time and don't pressure me.

Please remember English is not my first language, and I'm still learning, so if you see an error (there will be plenty of them) don't be mean to me. If you don't like it, just ignore my posts, thank you.

Your request need to contain:

The character/s you want me to write about (I will leave the list at the end of the post). I don't write ships, only “x reader”. If what you want is a preference, then only specify the fandom.

Select one of this: one-shot (2k+ words), preference or drabble (500-1k words).

Give me a brief description of what you want. You can even send me a scene or dialogue that you already have in mind.

Let me know if you want a bad or good ending. If you don't say anything, I'll do whatever feels right for me.

I will not describe any physical feature (skin color, weight…) unless it's relevant for the plot, so if the reader needs a specific feature please include it in your request.

I DON'T WRITE SMUT BY REQUEST, only whenever I feel like it. Sorry.

I can write love triangles, but not polyamory because I don't know almost anything about it and don't want to mess it up. Maybe in the future. The only exceptions are Steven Grant and Marc Spector, they're the only ones that I can make the reader date at the same time.

I DON'T WRITE INCEST, PEDOPHILIA OR ANY SICK THING LIKE THAT. If the character is underage, the reader will also be underage, and they will behave like underage people. I can write age gaps if the characters are both adults.

I don't necessary write only romantic relationships. If you want any kind of platonic relationship, that's okay, just specify it on the request.

[⚙️] Character Info Sheet

name: Grum name meaning: Their name means wrench, if pronounced correctly. Imagine a very deep-voiced heavy metal singer singing 'gum'. It's about like that. Grum stems from a generation of Utrom that have been known as great engineers and machine scientists and all their names refer to tools. alias/es: Kraang 811986 (while being mind-controlled), Bubblegum (by Rick, they just roll with it at that point tbh) and pretty much whatever other nickname people give them at some point. They are different from many other Utrom in the way that they use no exosuit and rely on their flyer, so they have no exosuit/human alias. ethnicity: Utrom, or Xephalopod Utrom (a wide-spread subspecies of the Utrom that '87 Krang stems from, but no Utrom ever really talk about it) one two picture(s) you like best of your chara My art muse has been so fickle lately and I didn't really draw much of meaning aside from just editing icons for them. I definitely wanna draw my little grape more in the future tho. You know, whenever inspiration hits me.

three h/cs you've never told anyone:

1) Grum pronounces their own name wrong when introducing themself to a human (saying the 'r' in it out loud while actually you don't). It is widespread knowledge among Utrom that most humans can't pronounce Utrom names correctly, so they don't bother and usually use different names altogether (like the Council for example). Which seems rather pretentious despite the lack of hard feelings, but it has just stuck with them. 2) Like many other Utrom, Grum is gluten-intolerant. They are also allergic to strawberries. Other than that though, they can digest many things that Earth has to offer. They are not really picky either, but due to their strawberry allergy, they don't like fruits that are similar to it (like raspberries). 3) They always carry a towel in their tiny backpack to clean themself up after work or eating. It's not obsessive, but Grum cares a great deal about hygienics and makes sure to keep themself and their equipment clean. You know they are stressed when they overlook a speck on themself after finishing work.

three things your character likes doing in their free time:

1) You know Grum is going to fix or improve some devices in their supposed 'free time'. Just being idle and doing nothing is not really relaxing for them. Keeping their tentacles busy is what keeps them the happiest. 2) They study a lot when they're not actually working. They have a tablet/pad in their backpack where they can also connect to Earth's Internet. Not unlike Bishop, their research can result in wild assumptions, depending on the topic and results. It is easier to feed Grum with wrong knowledge though. They can be a little gullible at times. 3) Trying out new things. Like cooking or crafting. Just as mentioned above, they are the happiest when their tentacles stay busy with something.

eight a few people your character likes / loves: That's a tricky one. While I have Grum intertwined in the Canon as having been a part of Kraang's hive and therefore harboring hard feelings towards Krang and Subprime, I haven't spent awfully much time thinking about their relationship with the other characters to be quite honest. The Salamandrian scout K'Arakga was their first friend after being on their own, even though they parted ways again. They are also on good terms with Bishop, since the latter offered to help them reconcile with the Utrom numerous times. And, considering Grum is a good fellow who tries to redeem themself, they do get along with Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and April. Grum is likely to stay in contact with Donatello the most though. two things your character regrets: Even though Grum never really had any control over it in the first place, their biggest regret is having been a part of the Kraang Hive. There are also moments where they regret numerous decisions they made, like some of their awkward socializing attempts that resulted in uncomfortable situations... two phobias your character has: Ever since having their own identity mixed up with Kraangs, they experience a great fear of memory loss (Athazagoraphobia). The thought of potentially forgetting someone or something important causes them huge distress, even though it is very untypical for Utrom to forget something entirely. Their dislike for being touched borders to a mild fear of hugging (Haphephobia). While they don't necessarily feel pain, the sense of guilt they harbor causes them great emotional discomfort when they're touched. It is a phobia they can and certainly will overcome over time, tho.

5 Is hard for me to answer because I don't really think in terms of what is problematic or maybe I'm just not that interested in ships without problems? Like, I will make my own problems if I don't think there are enough already.

Uh... I'll go for the one on my mind recently: Rick x Morty. It's not that I don't think it's problematic - it really is, it's just that in the context of the canon, adding a shippy dimension to the mess that is their partnership does not appreciably make their relationship more toxic. It's like "Oh, you added poison to the corrosive slime pit. And set it on fire. Cool. "

Also sometimes they are nice to each other.

Unexpected Cluster

Peter Parker x Widow!Reader, Yelena Belova, Kate Bishop, mention of Rick Mason, OC Widow

A/N: I'm sorry it took so long for me to update but I kind of hit a wall and wasn't sure how I wanted to continue. This chapter is a little short but I wanted to highlight Peter's growing relationships and not break up the next part I have planned. Fingers crossed I don't hit writer’s block again lol

Chapter 11

Kate and Yelena were quietly working when Peter and (Y/N) managed to drag themselves out of bed the next morning both still looking a bit out of it. Yelena looked up from her laptop, raising an amused brow at the pair as she leaned back in her seat.

“Looks like you two had a rough night,” she teased, drawing Kate’s attention away from her laptop.

“Yeah with nothing to show for it,” (Y/N) huffed, curling up in her desk chair, cradling a steaming mug.

“Your lead had nothing?” Kate wondered, resting her crossed arms on her desk.

“Nothing we didn’t already know,” Peter cut in from his desk, rubbing at one eye. “So what’s our next move?”

“Track down more Widows while keeping an eye out for our mystery woman,” Yelena replied, tilting her head back to look up at the ceiling. “Not much else we can do.”

“Any new leads?” (Y/N) yawned, one of her eyes squinting closed. Peter narrowed his eyes when Yelena’s face brightened and he had a feeling he wasn’t going to like what came out of her mouth next.

“Anyone ever been to Mongolia?”

The buzz of voices and traffic hung over Ulaanbaatar similarly to the gray clouds overhead. Peter shoved his hands deeper into his coat pockets, his shoulder creeping closer to his ears as he followed Yelena’s outline. He certainly wasn’t expecting it to be so cold and he wished he’d listened when (Y/N) told him to prepare for anything. Yelena looked over her shoulder and slowed her pace, waiting for Peter to catch up, and rolling her eyes playfully.

“It’s not that cold,” Yelena scoffed lightheartedly, shaking her head.

“It’s cold enough,” Peter mumbled, turning his grumpy expression on her, earning him a sharp laugh.

“You’ll live,” she snickered with a devilish smirk. Peter ignored her jabs and surveyed the street they were on, watching the unbothered citizens go about their day.

“What are we looking for?” he asked, smiling absently at a group of children laughing freely across the street. Peter bumped shoulders with Yelena, unconsciously swaying closer, leeching some of her body heat, and to his surprise, she didn’t move away, seemingly unbothered by his close proximity. He tried not to think too hard about how comfortable he felt around Yelena and how she seemed to feel the same; however, he couldn’t help the familial affection that surged up. Yelena looked up at him and for the briefest moment, her expression was calm and open like she forgot to be on guard but her features quickly hardened again.

“One of my old contacts told me about someone close to the person that hired her,” Yelena explained, darting her eyes between Peter and the street in front of them.

“Where are they?”

“You know, you ask a lot of questions,” Yelena snorted, rolling her eyes half-heartedly, allowing only a faint smirk. Without thinking, Peter threw an arm around her shoulders and beamed at her; it wasn’t lost on him that she didn’t shove him away.

“I’m curious,” he hummed with a shrug. Yelena scoffed quietly but still didn’t move away from Peter, tolerating his slight show of affection and it made him happier than he thought it would.

“Curiosity killed the cat,” she quipped, poking his side, making Peter stumble away from her. Yelena’s face lit up with a genuine smile, mirth dancing in her green eyes and Peter wished he got to see this side of her more. “We only have a few more blocks to walk. There, happy now?”

“Yes,” Peter snickered, straightening his spine again with a smile and letting his arm fall away. “Kate and (Y/N) will meet us at the hotel after, right?” Yelena hummed in affirmation, shifting her eyes away from Peter, scanning the flowing crowds again, ending the conversation there but he didn’t mind; they continued walking, occasionally bumping shoulders as they got closer to their destination.

Peter and Yelena made it back to the room before the others around dusk. When Yelena disappeared into the bathroom, Peter slipped out of the room, poking around the stairwells until he found a door to the roof. The night air raised goosebumps across his skin but Peter ignored it as he carefully sat on the ledge overlooking the capital city. The faint breeze rustled his already windblown hair and Peter closed his eyes, taking a few calming breathes as he let the myriad of recent events wash over him.

When Peter focused on the possible assassin watching him, he felt sick to his stomach, and a staggering wave of paranoia needling at the back of his mind, making him want to look over his shoulder. He was suddenly acutely aware of how exposed he was on the rooftop and he immediately searched the buildings around him for anything out of place. Peter was halfway through his arc across the capital's skyline when his ears perked up at the hushed squeak of the roof’s door and he stiffened, every muscle coiled tight, ready to strike. His breathing came out in harsh puffs as he sensed a presence creeping closer and a warm hand rested on his shoulder.

For a terrifying moment, he thought he might faint at the sudden relief that felt like a bucket of ice water dumped over his head. (Y/N) stood behind him but off to the side so he could see her from the corner of his eye; Peter finally turned his head to look at her when he was certain he wouldn’t pass out. Her head was tilted slightly, her brows pinched together, concern etched into the furrow between her brows; Peter grounded himself in her touch, willing his racing heart to relax.

“Hey,” (Y/N) hummed, sweeping her thumb over the sharp angle at the top of his shoulder blade. Peter dropped his head back, offering her a half-smile as a greeting; (Y/N) lingered behind him, the blazing city twinkling in her eyes as they slowly trailed around his face. The silence between them dragged on, the air growing heavy, an emotion flashing in her eyes that was too quick to catch. Peter expanded his awareness in an attempt to keep some semblance of control but the rush of stimuli quickly tittered on unpleasant.

The light breeze felt too harsh on his skin. The mixture of (Y/N)’s natural fragrance and the smog of the surrounding city burned his nostrils. His thundering heartbeat was deafening in his ears. The blood rushing to his face scorched him from the inside out. And the most staggering was the weight of (Y/N)’s hand on his shoulder. Peter’s entire body was thrumming with sensations and he felt lightheaded; thankfully, (Y/N) broke the contact, carefully lowering herself onto the ledge next to him. Peter wondered just how long they stayed locked together like that but quickly pushed the thought away when (Y/N) let out a soft, content sigh. They sat close enough to blur the lines of friendship but far enough apart that there was room for (Y/N)’s hand to curl around the stone between them.

“H-How’d you know I’d be up here?” Peter asked, forcing his eyes to the dark horizon.

“You like to be up high,” (Y/N) answered confidently, her legs swinging slowly as she braced her hands on the edge and leaned forward. Peter swallowed down the urge to scold her, not wanting to shift the unusual mood between them just yet.

“It helps clear my head,” Peter murmured, rubbing his hands over the rough denim of his pants.

“I know. There’s been a lot going on lately,” she sighed, turning her head ever so slightly. Peter recognized the underlying question; he could talk to her about everything or lamely agree and end the conversation there.

“There’s a lot weighing on my mind,” was what he settled on. Peter turned his head to look at her, just admiring her without the weight of impending doom hanging over them. (Y/N) didn’t fall into the societal beauty standard that was plastered all over the US. Her skin was blemished from everyday life, her hair wasn’t always perfect, and she had bags under her eyes from too many sleepless nights. She had a foul mouth and a short temper. She wasn’t a supermodel straight from a magazine. To some people she wouldn’t be anything special but to Peter? To him, she was extraordinary. Headstrong, beautiful, intelligent, confident, and so many other things that made Peter feel a little dizzy sometimes.

Apparently, Peter had a type.

“Wanna talk about it?” (Y/N)’s voice reached his ears, forcing him to focus on her face again and collect his wandering thoughts.

“Not really,” Peter sighed, slouching forward. “I kinda want to not think about it for once.”

“I get it,” she mumbled with a small smile, turning to meet his eyes. Peter mirrored her, letting out a long breath and tilted his head back to stare up at the stars overhead. The corner of his mouth lifted when he felt (Y/N) scoot closer and tentatively rest her head on his shoulder, folding her hands in her lap. Without looking down at her, Peter nervously shifted his hand so it was resting, palm up, in the dip between their touching legs. He flickered his eyes across the dark sky, half-heartedly looking for constellations in the clear sky, just reveling in (Y/N)’s warm presence at his side.

Peter pressed his lips together to hold back a sharp inhale when something brushed against his palm. He wanted to look down but stopped himself, letting his smile grow as he felt (Y/N)’s nails dragging across the sensitive skin on his palm. It took a few more tense minutes before his fingers started to spread around hers, his stomach somersaulting when their hands were loosely locked together. The last of the anxiety melted away when Peter dropped his head against (Y/N)’s, both of them letting out a soft sigh.

Peter felt like they might finally be on the same page.

Peter lounged in the co-pilot chair, tossing a paper ball at the pilot chair, smiling when the ball bounced off Kate’s head. She narrowed her eyes and threw the ball up higher than normal, making Peter work for it and laughing when he glared at her. The game continued to get more ridiculous, filling the quinjet with loud laughter that flowed out of the hatch when it opened. (Y/N) and Yelena paused at the door, watching the pair bent over howling with laughter, the former breaking into easy grins. (Y/N) glanced down at the text from Chloe, the Widow they recently reunited with her family, before shifting her eyes to the cackling pair at the front of the jet.

“You two idiots ready to go?” Yelena called, barely containing her slight smile as she trudged into the quinjet. Kate and Peter slowly calmed down, sighing in unison which only revamped their laughing fit, earning them fond eye rolls from Yelena and (Y/N).

“S-sorry, sorry,” Kate cackled, covering her mouth, tears popping up in the corners of her closed eyes. Peter had his face buried in his hands, muffling his gasping laughs and Yelena rolled her eyes at the adoring look on (Y/N)’s face.

“Move your ass,” the blonde huffed, lightly shoving Kate’s shoulder. The still laughing brunette stumbled out of the pilot chair, falling into one of the empty chairs with a harsh exhale, wiping a shaky hand over her face.

“Oh God,” Peter managed to get out around huffs of laughter, leaning his head back against the chair. “My stomach hurts now.”

“Poor baby,” (Y/N) teased, poking his stomach and jumping away when he swatted at her. (Y/N) stuck her tongue out at him before dropping into a seat opposite Kate and pulling her phone out of her pocket.

“Ready?” Yelena asked over her shoulder as she flipped switches, preparing for take-off. The other three occupants mumbled their agreements, settling into their seats as the quinjet engines roared to life, filling the cabin with a soft hum. Mongolia grew smaller as the jet carried them into the clouds and (Y/N) slumped in her chair, scrolling mindlessly through her emails. Peter, Yelena, and Kate were filling the space with small talk, the buzz of their voices surrounding her with a sense of calm, lolling her tense body closer to relaxation. Her eyes grew heavier, the small text on her phone blurring so badly she nearly missed the familiar email address.

The subject line of Mason’s email made (Y/N)’s eyes snap open, violently snuffing out the semblance of peace.

Subject: URGENT Rick Mason Fri. Aug. 3, 6:47 PM (2 DAYS AGO)

(Y/N),

I won’t beat around the bush and try to explain and/or justified this but you must know that I hate to tell you this. My personal records have been hacked and from what I can gather, the small bit of information I have on you, Kate, Peter, and Yelena was the only thing that seemed to be copied. I’m working on finding out who was able to break through my encryption but as soon as I have any information, I’ll share it with you.

(Y/N) could only gape at her phone for a moment, her brain trying to decipher the text as if it was written in another language. Fear prickled at the back of her skull for a moment but was quickly replaced by a surge of anger and she ground her teeth together. She lifted her head, her eyes darting around to the smiling faces of her found family as they joked about something (Y/N) hadn’t heard. Kate felt her heavy gaze first and glanced over to meet her eyes, her dark brows immediately furrowing when she caught the deadly look on (Y/N)’s face.

“What’s wrong?” Kate asked, tilting her head to the side. At the sound of her voice, Yelena and Peter snapped their attention to (Y/N), any traces of amusement disappearing instantly.

“Bug?” Peter hummed, squinting at her. (Y/N) looked down at her phone again, an uneasy feeling churning in her stomach before she faced her companions again.

“I think we have a problem.”

Dark eyes lazily followed the rhythmic blinking across the screen overhead. She leaned back in her seat, folding her hands over her stomach with a faint smile. A steady drip somewhere over her shoulder added to the puddles littering the floor of the deteriorating building, the sound perfectly in time with the quinjet’s GPS. She watched the dot crawl closer and closer to North America’s coast as hundreds of scenarios raced through her mind. The time of sticking to the shadows was over.

“Not long now, old friend.”

tell me about the works in progress you have

Oh shit thanks for indulging me anon!! I've been super busy with work lately, but has that stopped me from starting new projects? No because i am a foole. So I have a decent bunch of them stacked up atm

Seeing as I am in tmnt hell with no end in sight yet, a majority of it has been centered on fanworks for that! In the art department I have:

-draw the rottmnt gang in your outfits

-just. SO many screenshots I wanna redraw

-animating rottmnt boys as youtubers I think are funny (<- this one is VERY CLOSE to being done, I just have a few segments I'm dragging my feet on. I have the boards I just don't wanna liiiinnnne)

-animation sent to a Thriller remix focusing on the 03 villains. This one is heavily inspired by a PHENOMENAL Jojo animation of which I will be plastering all over the promo for when my version is finished. I don't even watch Jjba (yet) but I am obsessed with that video. Part of me is excited to finish just so I can show more people that video. I am stealing so many techniques from it

-I have a TH storage account full of characters I mean to draw as warmups, but I keep forgetting. They're either set to be sold (and adding art gives them more value) or I just don't have anything for them to do yet and they need a little detail (sometimes drawing helps me flesh out a character's personality and backstory, by way of it reflecting in their design)

-Another TOH six fanarts! The video of me speeddrawing the first one went viral on both Youtube and Tiktok, so I had plenty of character requests to fulfill. I've decided on the ones I want to do, but it's been hard getting motivated to work on it-- presumably because I've moved fixations and brain gets very mad when I think about anything else

On the writing side, I've found myself being a bit more engaged with a little community that's made up of a lot of talented fic writers! I've never had the skill or motivation to finish a fic, but recently I've been trying my hand at fixing that, largely because of their influence. I have a few I'm considering polishing and one I'm nearly ready to actually post!!

-Fire and Stones is, I guess a character study, and the one I'm hoping to post very soon. It examines Agent Bishop in phases of life that aren't really represented in the show, with an emphasis on his odd relationship with death and all the different ways he's experienced it (as in every conceivable way except actually dying, himself.) I'm a little iffy on the first chapter because it takes place so early on, there are no canon characters even alive to interact with. I worry it won't be as fun or engaging as the next two, of which I'm actually pretty happy with! (This is rare as I am a very opinionated mfer and my own work is not immune to my strong need to critique.) I guess I'm just overthinking it because I intend to post it publicly and I'm a little nervous about it. I've never shared any of my fanfiction before!

-a new piece that spawned from Fire and Stones is a "sickfic" that begins hitting the usual fluffy beats with a hint of strangeness, and then quickly devolves into angst and political drama as the sick character in question becomes sure they were actually poisoned and this is an attempted assassination. It will be fun, if I can manage to stick with such a long pace.

-There is also a fic set in the 2012 tmnt universe, heavily inspired by another fic out there where Donnie and Mikey run away and start their own life and begin to heal. I absolutely adored it, and after discussing it with a buddy we were like 'what if they hid out in EPF with Bishop lol' and then it spiraled into a found family drama hoorayyyyy. Most of what I have so far is just waxing poetic about utrom Bishop, though, because I like him and am apparently allergic to writing povs in anyone else's voice.

-ok so. Confession time. I like Rick and Morty. During one of the season finales a villain gives Morty the option to join him and escape Rick forever, and genuinely I feel it is ooc that Morty did not take them up on it, because they were RIGHT. Anyway I have the beginning of a canon divergence fic where he does accept the offer. I actually really like what I have so far! It's just one scene, but at the very least I might try finish the one setup chapter. I might never do more, but I really like what I do have and wouldn't mind showing it off.

-I have a little self-indulgent story about Naruto OCs learning the basics in genin training. I have one scene done but it kinda tapered off in the next rip

I love all my projects but I am always so tired from work I just end up not working on them. But I hope I can have some cool stuff to show sooner rather than later! May it bring someone joy

New Year's Eve toasts || No longer accepting.

@technodromes sent: 🥂💋 for a toast with a kiss (Bishop & SR)

After what happened at the Christmas party, inviting Bishop over for New Year's Eve seemed the obvious, right thing to do. The last thing Rick wants is for the Utrom to think that he is avoiding him. The idea has crossed his mind, but he has quickly discarded it. Dating and everything connected to it might not be his field of expertise, but he refuses to lose a good friend over something as stupid as a crush.

Not to mention that AR would have made fun of him till the end of time if he had taken the coward's way out and his best friend already has a too long list of things he can use against him.

What leaves him a little on edge is that they haven't talked about what has passed between them, about the kiss, and about what it means yet. Rick would like to say that he doesn't mind, since there's plenty of time for them to do it, but not knowing still leaves him unable to figure out how he is supposed to act. And it's starting to drive him crazy.

That little New Year's gathering had, once again, been AR's idea. The black market dealer had wanted to drag him to yet another crazy party, but this time Rick has been adamant in his refusal. So, they have compromised by choosing to spend New Year's Eve at a small pub they both hang out at from time to time. The place is offering a decent meal and live music, so something pleasant but not too wild.

All in all, the night had gone well, even if SR has ended up wishing he had made his best friend promise to behave. Maybe, that way, the idiot wouldn't have spent the whole meal poking fun at the rest of the presents, Bishop included.

So when midnight approaches and AR decides to go and join the band that's currently playing, Rick doesn't feel guilty in the least for the relief that washes over him. He loves his best friend, he really does, but at times he is just too much.

"I-I'm sorry about him, I-I swear that he isn't always like that," he hurries to tell Bishop the moment they are left alone. "H-He is a bit of an acquired taste, b-but...he's worth it, once you get to know him."

There's much more than he could say on the matter, about the sides that his best friend hides behind his reckless troublemaker facade, but there's no time left for it. Before he can even get started, the crowd around them cheers and start chanting the countdown.

The guard's eyes go wide and he hurries to fill both their glasses, so that they can have their toast. A nervous smile opens on his lips as he forces himself to keep his eyes on his friend as the seconds tick away towards the climax of the night.

The sound of their glasses clinking against each other is swallowed by the yells of the patrons and by the music starting up again. Rick, however, pays no mind to it and, instead, he downs his drink as fast as he can, not to lose the momentum. His tolerance for alcohol is too high for the wine to truly affect his inhibitions, but he is putting his faith in the placebo effect.

His lips part, as if he wanted to say something, but he quickly changes his mind and instead dives down in a rush. It's a miracle that he doesn't end up headbutting poor Bishop instead of kissing him, but somehow he manages to fit their mouths together without any painful accident.

The kiss is quicker than the one they have exchanged on Christmas, a bit more hesitant too, but it also holds a stronger hint of longing. It's not really conveying a statement or a question, but more of a hope.

When he moves away, the guard's face feels hot and the look on his face betrays every bit of the nervousness he is struggling with.

"Uh, s-so, that was...I mean! H-Happy New Year, my friend."

It took me a while, but I’m finally here with my celebration for reaching the incredible milestone that is 9k followers, I’m celebrating with a special event: drabble prompts for underrated characters! 🎉✨

They are basically drabbles and prompts put together, since they’re formatted like a drabble but requested with a prompt provided, in this case them being tropes we all love. There is an additional twist, it being that this celebration will be focusing on underrated characters, being it a combination of characters that deserve more love as well as some characters that haven’t been requested much and that I’m inspired for.

While this celebration is happening, THE OTHER REQUESTS WILL BE CLOSED so I can focus on writing these without getting overwhelmed.

Personal Opinion: A transcendent story about two boys who are still figuring out how they fit into the world. They grow and learn about themselves and each other over the course of the book and you will fall in love with them as they fall for one another.

Do I Own This Book? One day, definitely.

Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:

Likes:

- Diverse characters all with a varying degree of experience in life. But even when they’re clueless about something (i.e. Jules with queer stuff), they go on to learn. Jules stereotyped other gays because he didn’t know anything else despite his own orientation being gay. He learned on his own time that being gay comes in all sorts of shades. Jamal, the captain of the basketball team, is gay and black! Two Latino boys were crowned Homecoming Kings! Lowell… I’m pretty sure is just a generic white gay but he was effeminate. Stereotypical. And that’s just as valid of a way to exist as Jamal. He was happy and comfortable in himself and that’s what’s important. Plus, he has a plus-sized Asian BFF in Lily Cho. We also have the Chinese Gregg Dang and the Indian trans love interest Jack. So much Asian rep and queer rep! And something else that is remarkable is that a lot of them are ignorant but they’re willing to learn. Lowell hadn’t even realized that the GSA wasn’t a safe space for the entire queer community. That Kacey didn’t feel safe there because they’re non-binary and therefore the terms “gay” and “straight” can’t fit them. It was so important of a moment that I think needed to be highlighted.

- The progression of Jules’s and Jack’s relationship was so natural and adorable to watch. While I got a lot of secondhand embarrassment at the start, it was still cute to see them get close. And Jules was just so obvious with the way he got so excited to be near Jack and constantly checking in on him. He dropped like a dozen hints of “Hey, I like boys” hoping that Jack would pick them up and it was hilarious. He reminded me of an eager, playful puppy and I appreciate how that resulted in Jack coming out of his shell more and more over time.

- Gregg and Cecilia are good friends. I mean, Cecilia was on thin ice when Jack had been wrongfully outed but they were supportive of Jules’s crush on another boy and actively and slyly observed them as they got closer together. It was just adorable. Gregg is also such a unique character. He just sort of exists in his own bubble and it’s honestly so funny.

- I love how Jules and Jack put their foot down when both of their parents were being such bigots. Even though Linda was so supportive with the gay thing and was ready to go to war with Bishop for her son, she refused to understand the trans thing. And Jules refused to let her have it. Well, at first he did, but then he learned to do better. Be better. And he came to the realization that his mother would never want to do the same. So I’m glad he got so mad at her even though she was his close ally because she was so disrespectful to someone he really liked. All those invasive questions were just wrong to ask. And she had the gall to act like she wasn’t trying to set Jack off with that whole “obviously he has anger issues.” Good for Jules for not giving her the satisfaction of leaving Jack. Good for Jack for not allowing his father, Rick, to indulge Linda in that bullshit. I feel so bad. Yes, Rick’s been so supportive of his son but it’s the bare minimum to love his son the same no matter what. So it was wrong of Rick to act like his son somehow owed him for what? For accepting his transition? So his son has to just go along with a woman saying he’s a trend? That’s so fucked up. So I’m glad that Jack refused to be guilt tripped and stood his ground. And his dad realized his mistake. As he should.

- Evie finally reaching back in the end to that last Tumblr post that Jack made was so sweet. It was like coming full circle. Since it all started with that Tumblr post. Seeing their story that way was confusing at the beginning but as I kept reading about Jack’s past as Adam, I became attached. It was so emotional and powerful and I am so glad that they’re going to work things out.

- The writing style is gorgeous. That ending, with the POVs joining together? Perfection. It was also just so romantic to see the way they reacted to one another in real time. Every time Jules did something, we got to see how Jack felt about it immediately. They felt safe and loved together and that is the most important thing in any relationship. Just look at when their parents met for that awful dinner. Jules was so unsure of what his mother was thinking but the moment he saw Jack, he felt good. He realized then he loved Jack and it can be as simple as that. It doesn’t have to be complicated because he doesn’t have the body parts that other boys are born with. He loves Jack and that’s all he needs to know.

- When Jules actually took the time to learn more about trans bodies and issues, I was head over heels for him. I mean, he actually watched Jack’s old videos with Evie to figure out what his experience was like. That moment when Jack was in the bathroom removing his binder because it suffocated him while he was asleep was something else. Jules standing outside and asking about it, he proved that he had educated himself. And he even gave Jack his hoodie so that he wouldn’t see too much of his chest. It was so respectful and thoughtful and he was just going about it perfectly. That’s what happens when someone actually educates themselves instead of asking people such horribly invasive questions like Linda did. He also knew Jack didn’t like being touched in a few places. So Jules asked for permission to touch his brow and it may sound really ridiculous, but it was actually so cute.

Dislikes:

- A lot of stuff felt unresolved in the end. Susie misgendered her own brother. It doesn’t matter that she’s going through a rebellion phase or that she felt like she’d lost a built-in best friend because it’s bullshit. It’s not fair to Jack who is trying to be himself. I feel like they needed to talk things out more before the conclusion of the book but I suppose that’s a thing you do in person, not over Skype.

- Speaking of unresolved, I feel like Cecilia owed Jules and Jack an apology for the shit she said.

- And Dhyllin. I’m assuming Jules cut him out of his social circle completely. To be honest, that was probably the direction their friendship was leading to. He’s such a dick and he was barely in the book! That’s how you know a character’s an ass. When they’re barely in the book and yet the few times they show up, they’re straight up nasty. Honestly, it’s no wonder why Jack thought he was the one who sent out the video. It is absolutely the type of douche move he would do under the guise of “looking out” for Jules. It also made me so happy when Jules snapped at him about the fact that being gay isn’t solely about dick. Fuck that notion.

- Holy shit, Linda is the worst. I was actually with her at the start because she was going to go to war for her son when she thought people were bullying him for his sexuality. She couldn’t extend that same grace to a trans kid though. Because she refused to understand it. She misgendered him constantly and “blamed” the parents for the way they raised Jack because children cannot “choose” to do that to their bodies apparently. Fuck her. And on the flip side, respect to Jack’s mom for going around the block to re-introduce her son and glaring at every person to make sure they knew his new name and presentation. Or else. What a badass.

- I was going to be mad at Kacey but I get it. They were scared of being alone. It’s terrifying. You see your savior at school and it’s like they’ve changed too and it feels heartbreaking. I’ve come to another realization too. This was a lesson to Jack. That outing a person without their permission is never okay because he made the same mistake with Evie. He outed her to her dad by mistake and put her in a very dangerous situation. One that involved her hair being cut and her clothes being shredded. He realized it because of what Kacey did to him. Obviously, it’s not a good thing that it happened at all but it’s good that everyone learned this. So it doesn’t happen again to someone who might not be able to survive it like Evie and Jack did.

- Fuck Gavin Miller. That’s it.

THURSDAY, APRIL 21 GHOSTS (9:00-9:30 PM) “Farnsby & B” – As Sam and Jay await the arrival of their first official B&B guests, they face obstacles triggered by a Norse curse placed upon them by Thorfinn (Devon Chandler Long). Also, Isaac takes a huge, centuries-in-the-making step in his personal life. First season finale.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 4 GOOD SAM (10:00-11:00 PM) “To Whom It May Concern” – The battle between Sam and Griff takes a shocking turn that will irrevocably change their family dynamic and the future of the hospital. First season finale.

FRIDAY, MAY 6 MAGNUM P.I. (9:00-10:00 PM) “Close To Home” - Magnum and Higgins are sent on a deadly mission inside a high security correctional center when a ruthless criminal abducts Katsumoto and his ex-wife, Beth. TUESDAY, MAY 24 FBI (8:00-9:00 PM) As the team investigates a deadly robbery that garnered a cache of automatic weapons for the killers, they discover one of the perps is a classmate of Jubal’s son, who is reluctant to cooperate. Fourth season finale.

FBI: MOST WANTED (10:00-11:00 PM) The team chases an oligarch who goes on a terror spree in NYC in a desperate attempt to escape an impossible situation. Third season finale.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 25 SURVIVOR (8:00-10:00 PM) – 2-HOUR SEASON FINALE After an accelerated 26-day grueling season filled with new twists and advantages, castaways skillfully navigate their way to the final three, with one crowned the Sole Survivor during the two-hour season finale, followed by the Reunion Show (10:00-11:00 PM), hosted by Jeff Probst. 42nd season finale.
