Sympathy for the Devil; part 2
discord got me to finally write a connecting scene, so here! have some more of this nonsense au now based only vaguely on the blacklist! [part 1]
~~
“Alright. What do we know about him?”
Luo Qingyang stands at the back of the small conference room facing the large projector screen on the opposite wall. Her uniform jacket is draped over the back of the chair in front of her, and her fingers curl and uncurl of their own volition, kneading the dark blue fabric into the cushion beneath it. This is not what she expected her morning to look like.
Her team -- her and Lan Wangji’s team, now -- is gathered at the table in front of her.
Nie Zonghui has several stacks of photocopied notes spilling out of an open manilla folder, two highlighters, four sizes of sticky notes, and a legal pad in front of him. He has blue ink on his neck where the tip of the pen resting behind his ear rubs whenever he turns his head to the left. Frustration rolls off of him in waves.
Lan Jingyi is typing rapidly on his CBC-issued laptop which is angled toward Luo Qingyang just enough that she can see he has six different windows open and is in desperate need of at least two external monitors. The overworked fan is almost louder than his heavy-handed, caffeine-fuelled typing. He’s twisting back and forth in the swivel chair, dragging his toes across the carpet, but swivels to a stop at her question.
Qin Su stands off to Luo Qingyang’s right, placing photos -- mostly grainy or blurred -- in an ever expanding evidence map. At the top, with a dozen or so threads leading away from its pin, is a crisp, clean, photo of a man wearing an approximation of the CBC Academy uniform, smiling brilliantly at the camera. Beneath him, the title card reads: Yiling Laozu, Wei Wuxian.
“Yiling Laozu?” asks Lan Jingyi, one foot tapping out a vague rhythm against the leg of the conference table.
Luo Qingyang restrains her eyeroll, only because she can see that at least four of the open windows on his laptop are chasing down information regarding Yiling Laozu’s associates, rather than the demonic kingpin himself.
“Yeah,” she says. “Break it down for me.”
“Well,” says Qin Su, moving from the board to the open folio near her, “he’s a bit of a recluse, so we don’t actually know a lot.”
Her folio is much better organized than Nie Zonghui’s.
“Start with the basics.”
Qin Su nods, “Right. Yiling Laozu. Wanted for-- basically every kind of spiritual crime known to the CBC. He invented the Ghost Path in his late teens or early twenties, we think. It’s unclear, what with all of the rumor and suspicion and superstition around even saying his name--”
“Yeah, he really looks like a boogeyman…” says Nie Zonghui. He’s stressed. They should never have sent him into the room with Wei Wuxian.
Lan Jingyi says, “Hot boogeyman. If you ask me--”
Luo Qingyang clears her throat pointedly. “Nobody did. Moving on?”
“Yup!”
Qin Su points to Lan Jingyi who taps a few keys on his -- very abused -- keyboard and takes over the projector. He throws several pages up on the wall, photos with short but damning rap sheets.
“Known associates include Gui Jiangjun and Mo Daifu,” she says, indicating the sheets labeled Wen Qionglin and Wen Qing respectively.
She points to Lan Jingyi again and a very low-light black and white shot comes up center-screen. It shows a man who could potentially be Wei Wuxian entering a building that is definitely Two Fans. The brilliant green of the sign is lost, but it is plenty readable. “He has been seen entering the Headshaker’s club on several occasions, but any actual association remains speculative at best.”
Nie Zonghui shrugs in the corner of Luo Qingyang’s eye. “He might just have good taste in venues.”
All three other agents in the room turn to look at him, brows quirked or furrowed or raised to different degrees.
Nie Zonghui shrugs again, “What? It’s a nice club.”
--
Wei Wuxian rubs at the zip tie dent around the outside of his wrists. He plays it up a little, wincing and groaning just enough to be heard.
Still, Lan Wangji doesn’t look at him.
It’s fine.
He follows the CBC Director and field agents out of the interrogation room and down a long, boring hallway. Lan Qiren and the other cultivator break off through one of the nondescript doors -- room 129-9, Wei Wuxian notes out of habit -- and then it’s just Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian following Lan Wangji. Down a long, boring hallway.
It feels like old times. Especially as Wei Wuxian finds his eyes… wandering.
The Bureau slacks look unfairly good on Lan Wangji, blue wool hugging tight to the curves of his legs and ass in a way no law enforcement uniform should ever be allowed to do. It’s rude. He must get them tailored.
Lan Wangji leads him through another nondescript door -- room 157-3 -- which opens up into a large bullpen. Heads swivel in their direction, eyes snagging on Wei Wuxian and his casual state of dress. Everybody else in here is wearing uniforms in one state of undress or another, while Wei Wuxian is wearing ripped black jeans and a heather red v-neck. Hopefully he’ll get his jacket back soon. He spent a good amount of time stitching talismans into it; he’d like not to have wasted the effort.
Eyes un-snag; heads swivel back toward screens. Wei Wuxian remembers the strength of Lan Wangji’s glare and he imagines it’s only become more powerful with age and seniority. He can practically feel the shiver up his own spine.
Or maybe that is a shiver up his spine.
It’s strangely nostalgic, being here, even though Wei Wuxian is fairly certain he has never been in this particular room before. But that doesn’t really matter. The layout is the same, the furniture is the same, even the smell is the same. The computers have been updated, at least, but not within this decade.
Lan Wangji’s office is nice. Clean and minimalist, as expected. Stark white walls, a meticulously curated bookcase, and a matching walnut and glass-top desk. No pictures, no wall art, not even a particularly fancy name plate. The closest thing to a personal touch anywhere in the room is the tea set Lan Wangji’s mother made for him before she died. Wei Wuxian’s fingertips still remember the soft, inexpert curves of the cups.
The door clicks closed behind him and the silence that settles is almost crushing.
Tension pulls the lines of Lan Wangji’s shoulder blades toward the middle of his back, which is still turned to Wei Wuxian. His hands slowly curl into fists by his side.
A familiar ache twists in Wei Wuxian’s gut -- has been twisting in his gut for almost an hour now. The ache for Lan Wangji’s eyes to be on him. The ache for his attention, for his reaction. Anything, really. Since the day he met Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian has always just wanted to break through that barrier Lan Wangji puts around himself, and to really touch him.
Metaphorically.
And literally, but that’s something else.
Probably.
Now, Lan Wangji’s long braid shifts across the navy fabric of his uniform coat as he turns his head to the side, the shining plait slipping like snake scales through water. Wei Wuxian holds his breath, waiting for the bite. He watches the tension held in Lan Wangji’s jaw forcibly release, and then, finally:
“Wei Ying.”

I recently got sucked into the TGCF fandom, and now I have a rabid story bunny on the loose in my head.
It's a reverse role fanfic, but the thing is, almosy every time I reverse a role, a name changes.
Hua Cheng and Xie Lian are reversed (of course)
Hua Cheng's name becomes Xu Hong (since he's part of the Xuli royal family. Original, I know). I realized that Xie Lians's official title, Xianle, doesn't fit Xu Hong, so I had to create a name for him: Ying Guan (Flower Crown -- just a rough translation since Chinese characters have more than one translation per character. Keep that in mind for the other names and titles)
Xie Lian becomes Fang Cheng (Beautiful City), though Ghost City's moniker is Hua Cheng (Flower City). Only people who don't know what it is call it Hua Cheng (sometimes locals will call it that to mess with humans). Fang Cheng is also nicknamed HuaHua by the locals (Hua Chengzhu when they're being really mischievous). They call him that (and the city that) because he's always covered in flowers and wraith butterflies, and the city is covered in flowers as well.
I'm still deciding on how they look.
I made Feng Xin, Xie Lian's maternal cousin. Qi Rong is Xu Hong's assistant (becomes Xuan Zhen when he ascends). Mu Qing is Xu Hong's guard (Nan Yang when he ascends).
He Xuan becomes He Sheng and the Water Master (Shui Shi Sheng). His little sister, He Baihe, becomes the Wind Master (Feng Shi Baihe).
Shi Wudu becomes Xuan Shui (mysterious waters), the equivalent of He Xuan.
Nangong Jie (former Ling Wen), was a female general of Xuli and ascends as Ming Guang Jiangjun after the Xuli rebellion -- that still happens, though Xuli doesn't officially falls until a century later.
Pei Ming was a shoemaker in Xuli, and he ascends as Ling Wen.
As you can tell, the three tumors are already a riot.
The hardest part comes in the form of Jun Wu. His original name (in this fic) is Wu Yong, and he never became a god. His wife, Wu Jianlan, did (goddes of forges -- Lin Long ((fine jade dragon)) ). Her new official title became Long Jun (Prosperous Lord) after she crowned herself as Empress.
I like everything I've made so far, but it's going to be a pain in the ass to write because of how the characters are going to change and thus the circumstances are going to change.
The fun part is when I go to post on AO3 and have to figure out the tagging, lmao. The relationship tags are going to make EVERYONE cringe, I can already tell.
If you guys have any ideas, feel free to add to this!

this is the headcanon brainrot anon and i just wanted to ask if I could just drop tgcf brainrot here and if so, i just lowkey wanted to talk about how intriguing a female mu qing would be in a spider!mq au.
like hear me out
this poor girl who everyone just sees as lesser 9 she's crossdressing in this hc of mine bc it seems more realistic that way tbh with how xianle is portrayed) who has no sort of status or stepping stone or anything to help suffers so much and quite literally ascends from her strength and is bitten and given powers only for her to be told that she's 'unworthy' of it and her just fighting against every judgement passed on her.
I just was thinking abt this for some reason. It also hits harder if somehow this double perception exists in the heavenly realm too and it's like the ling wen situation but reversed - the south west sees her as a strong martial god and a woman but everyone else denies it bc how could a female martial god exist and the same goes for zhizhu jiangjun. post-canon she'd probably shed the whole farce or straight up deny how ppl try to tell her story.
exhales yeah that's the brainrot I've been having. I lowkey want to write a fic on it but I wanted to ask for your permission since spider!mq is your creation (and honestly a galaxy brain idea)
I'm so sorry for how long this is. 😭😭😭
very sorry for only replying now ive been so busy with work and barbie i forgot to open tumblr asgsjkdks
MY GOD FEM MU QING 🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️ so much angst potential for fem mq. the way other people would try to make claims on and police what she can or can't do and how much it fucks her up mentally.... only for her to turn things around and reclaim her story as her own in the end AUEGHRHDHRHR
AND YEAH PLEAS PLEASE WRITE IT OMG im always welcome for others to write or make things based on the stuff i create, i'm amazed you guys even like it in the first place.... I'D BE HONORED EVEN 😭💖🫶🙏

hmmm hmmm i feel like i’ve talked about it before but (still in the intrusion extra) there’s a line about how summoning, questioning and then controlling corpses might be the quickest route, but, etc etc (this in context of lsz needing to improve his own nighthunting skills). it starts like this 即召即问,点尸成将 and i’m particularly interested in the 将 part. i’m getting from context that the overall meaning is “turn a corpse into 将”, but... into what exactly? 将 (jiang) is the same jiang as in wn’s gui jiangjun (ghost general), as a noun it can indeed mean “general”. in japanese, you have 兵にする or to turn [the corpses] into 兵. there’s no reading, but i’m assumign it’s tsuwamono = warrior, soldier. the idea of wwx making corpse soldiers in the time of peace aside, i’m wondering about the usage of jiang as... basically a shortcut for wwx’s puppets/things that will do whatever he tells them to. the word “general” makes me think of a leader, not a subordinate, but it seems like the assumption is that wwx is like... ghost/demon emperor? ww

Wen QiongLin. I had no ref and initially I wanted to paint the ‘Ghost General’, all evil and scary, but then I kept thinking about Wen Ning, ‘Wen QiongLin’, the knife, with all his quiet and complicated emotions.

The Untamed - Episode 31
Tumblr media
I must say before I start watching this episode. I am so not ready for this. These reviews are spontaneous and I write them as I watch the episode for the first time. And I am pretty sure I will be in pain and will write it down there. Just as disclaimer, I don’t know what is going to happen next other than somewhere in the near future, we will get back to the beginning of episode one, so please bear with me if I judge a character wrongly because that is how they want me to see it like... right now as I am watching. Moreover, if I do criticize a character it doesn’t mean I don’t like that character or don’t understand why he/she acts this or that way. Now that has been said... I am getting ready for this torture.
The relationship between Ah Yuan and Wei Ying is so cute. Sometimes, I feel like if it was not for that little guy, Wei Ying would feel much worse than now. It’s giving him somehow a feeling of having a family, but also must comforts him in his thought of making the right choice. It’s also so very cute how Wen Qing likes to watch over Wei Ying taking care of that child. Truthfully, I really like that girl, she understands a lot more even though she doesn’t say much. She’s probably the one who understands most what Wei Ying have given up and probably feels bad for imposing on him so much. She’s the one to get the invitation that Wen Ning got from someone of the Jin clan and hands it to Wei Ying. When he knows that he can see Yanli again, his face... it’s filled with happiness. That’s probably the hardest part for Wei Ying, not being able to see her.
As he goes in town to buy a little gift for his nephew, people gossips about the baby and the fact that they invited over Wei Ying. A lot of people disagree. but that gift isn’t the real gift: Wei Ying carved each beads of a bracelet for Jing Ling to wear, that way it will repel ghosts and monsters. As Wen Ning is about to touch, he tells him not to, even for him this could be bad.
It’s mean cousin again. I know he has a name, but I can’t remember it. Anyways, as Wei Ying and Wen Ning gets close to their destination, he was waiting for them and almost killed Wei Ying with an arrow. Fortunately, Wen Ning stopped it right in time. That guy is so annoying. Oh god. So disgusting. What happened to that dude’s skin? Whatever that is, he definitely blames Wei Ying for it. And here, I love how Wei Ying is just like: who the hell are you? Do we know each other? I don’t even know you and if I wanted you dead, you’d be much uglier and everybody would know it was my doing. That’s pretty arrogant, but I kind of missed a little bit that side of him. However, that was probably not the smartest thing to say, but somehow, whatever he would say, that Jin guy wouldn’t even believe it. So he will fight with Wei Ying to kill him. Wei Ying being himself is like: oh well, since you really want to die that much, I will help you, it’s a pleasure. Gosh... That’s not what you should do right now... You’re here to see your nephew. Not to fight with those worthless people. Of course this means trouble... And then, Wen Ning take of his charms around his neck, probably to lock his killing instincts or whatever you want to call it. AND HE YELLS AGAIN LIKE THOSE UGLY KUILEI. The smoke was bad ass though. But the screaming... why would they make him do that... it doesn’t really make him look that much powerful. Or maybe he’s in pain for releasing all of this? And if that’s the case... STOP IT RIGHT NOW. Wen Ning’s my poor baby and leave him alone. He’s a nice guy, not his fault that he was brought up in the wrong clan...
While Wen Ning takes care of that army of small fry, that annoying cousin goes alone for Wei Ying and they fight. Which is pretty unfair since Wei Ying doesn’t wield a sword. During the fight, Wei Ying loses his gift for Jin Ling. Just then, Jin Zixuan comes to put an end to his cousin’s doing: he’s really mad. Sometimes, that Jin Zixuan really awes me. He’s probably the least despicable person from the Jin clan, if we omit how he treated Yanli before. Oh wow. Even Zixuan doesn’t think it’s Wei Ying who gave that cruse to his cousin. He’s really not that bad.
That ugly cousin. He reduced to nothing all the beads bracelet that Wei Ying spent so many nights to carve. In Wei Ying’s place, I would also be very bad and as he’s about to attack that ugly cousin, it’s Zixuan who stops him. Zixuan tells him to stop Wen Ning now so they can go ban to Jinlin tai and if really it isn’t Wei Ying’s doing, the curse I mean, then it’s nothing. But Wei Ying won’t stop first, he’s starting to think that they invited him over to kill him actually.
So then Wei Ying starts playing the flute. And then,... what is he doing? Wen Ning now has to irises. It’s so scary. Stop this right now, I don’t like this, unless it’s to make Wen Ning go back to his regular self, I don’t want to see this. Don’t use poor baby Wen Ning like he’s a puppet. He’s your friend. Would you do something like to Jiang Cheng? No never. I know Wen Ning will never replace him, but he has been true to you since the beginning, he deserves you treat him like a real friend, not just like an underling...
Oh my god. Wen Ning just killed Jin Zixuan. What the hell... That’s definitely not Wei Ying’s doing. I am pretty sure of that. He promised he wouldn’t do anything to Zixuan. And even so, I wouldn’t believe it. Yanli likes Zixuan so much and she has his kid now, Wei Ying would never do something to harm Yanli. And the look on his face. I never thought I would be crying over Jin Zixuan’s death, but I am. And as he’s dying, the only thing he wants to say, it’s that Yanli is waiting for him to participate in the festivities for the baby... ALL OF THAT HAPPENED BECAUSE OF THAT UGLY COUSIN. It’s obvious that that wasn’t what Wei Ying wanted to do. So either someone else used Wen Ning (but how?) either he doesn’t control his powers as he thought he was.
I think. This is the worst moment. When Wei Ying wakes up back at luanzang gang and kicks Wen Ning away, his eyes filled with resentment. Clearly it wasn’t Wen Ning’s fault, he was not himself back then and Wen Ning was the one to tell Wei Ying not to fight with Jin Zixuan. He wouldn’t have done such a thing willingfully. It hurts me such. I cried as loud as when I thought Wen Ning was dead. Why are they doing this to me? Why. Wei Ying even scared away the poor Ah yuan...
This is so sad. Wei Ying is now regretting leaving, he’s doubting that what he did was right and just then Wen Ning apologizes and says everything was his fault. And then... Wei Ying is thinking, is it really his fault? Did Wen Ning became like because he wanted to?
It’s like there is no answer to all Wei Ying’s despair. He doesn’t know what to do anymore, so Wen Qing and Wen Ning they... They are going to surrender themselves to the Jin. I cannot accept this. I can’t even see clearly as I write this. Wen Qing used her needles to force Wei Ying to lie down for a few days as she and Wen Ning are going to surrender. There’s no use in finding the culprit for the curse on Jin Zixun (the ugly cousin) because they are convinced now that it was Wei Ying’s doing and the world is too big for them to find the person behind all of this.
Wei Ying doesn’t want Wen Ning to go, none of this his fault. He says why should the weapon be punished and not the person who wields it? Wen Qing is slowly trying to convince him, but it’s not working as he knows that for them going to Jinlintai only means they will get killed. But Wen Qing says they should have died earlier, this is just what should have happened way before if not for him. He asks her to help him get up, but instead, she puts him to sleep. I don’t want this to happen. I don’t want them both to die. These two characters are some of my favorites... (ok, all characters from this drama are my favorites so far, except for Wen Ruohan, Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao, Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao - I am trying to like him, I understand why he is the way he is, I pity him but... he has too much pride for me to be able to forgive him, he’s a liar and doesn’t mind hurting those who care about him to protect himself and then trying to deny what he did. I think I should make a post about all the characters from this drama, because it’s so hard to explain how I feel about them in just few words in the middle of my recaps, it’s too complicated)
Now that I have calmed down a little, that scene was way too much to handle for my poor heart, I left out so many important things.
Oh my god.
As I press play again, it’s the river of tears again. She lied to him. The whole group is going. They are all going to their death. Even small Ah Yuan. I don’t want to see this. This is so unfair, those people never did anything wrong in their life. And that is so stupid. By sacrificing themselves like this, they just throw away all of Wei Ying’s efforts for all this time. The other people from other clans still won’t accept him anyways. I thought Wen Qing was smarter than that.
When Wei Ying wakes up it’s only to find an empty Luanzanggang, with no one left. In despair, he runs away to try and save those he gave up everything for.
Honestly. I never cried so much in front of a drama. I almost choked myself because of my tears. This episode is just so heartbreaking. It took me hours to go through the whole thing. It was way too hard to watch. This episode really hurt me. I am very shaken and not sure if I want to keep watching something that puts me in such a state. However, I want to see Wei Ying’s name being cleared, I want to see more of Xiao Zhan’s and Wang Yibo’s acting, especially both of them together since they have such a great chemistry. I know that in the novel, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are a couple and that in the TV show they are not, but... they did such a good job of making it unofficial. It’s like, the whole drama says they are not, but in the acting. Yes. I am not crazy when I see it. It’s so unusual for something like that to be aired in China when homosexuality is still something... homosexuals in China have a tough life. It’s still considered as something that can be healed. I am not going to give my opinion on homosexuality here because it is off topic, but also because it would probably offend some people and that’s not the point, but for something like that to be aired in China... I am impressed. And I am absolutely impressed by the actors of this drama who are doing such a good job, but not only them, the people dubbing, the producers, cameramans, writers, everyone. Maybe the people from special effects would have done better with a little more budget though (can I remind you of the dancing statue, the creepy wolf/dog and the turtle monster?), but overall, this drama. Yep. I have to convince the whole world to watch it. It’s so great. If you have any tricks to make people go over the first episode (you need to watch more than one to get addicted) please share. I want all of my sisters to watch this, even my brother (though it might be easier to convince my sisters).
And I am going to stop this right now. There’s so much I still want to say about that drama. Too much probably. I am usually only doing recaps for the episode, but I think I am going to post about every characters a little bit. None of these characters are simple, they are so well thought and complex. And I will probably write an overall appreciation post. Maybe try fan fictions sometime? I never wrote any, I don’t if I can, but Cheng Qing Ling really changed my life. I don’t know what I am going to do when I will be done watching. Maybe watch again until Wang Yibo’s new drama is out. Watch their interviews. Stalk all the cast. I need twitter and Weibo now.
Please, someone save me. By the end of the month, I will have the CD too. I think I will sleep with the ost playing. I almost know all the lyrics of all songs.
Send help. And tissues, because I am not done crying. Thank you for reading.

honorary titles in cql/mdzs by how feral they make me go
Hanguang-Jun (Light Bearing Lord): I am content. I am at Peace. I am possibly maybe starstruck. Mr Lan Wangji out here being called the Actual Bringer of Light and it is Absolutely True. Every junior of every sect calls him like he has personally made the sun shine and they're right, Wei Wuxian and I concur. I'm not feeling even remotely feral. I am as serene as Hanguang-Jun himself.
Chifeng-Zun (Red Blade Master) and Sandu Shengshou (Skilled Wielder of Sandu/Thrice Bane Master): Logical. Sensible. Send a clear message. You know what to expect and that is that Nie Mingjue and Jiang Cheng Have Swords and they're Pissed Off Enough to Use Them. Be scared for your life and please, please Do Not annoy them. I'm not going feral but they sure are. Good for them.
Lianfang-Zun (Lord of Hiding Fragrance/Subtle Fragrance): Makes sense in context but too on the nose. We get it. Jin Guangyao's an Evil Mastermind who stumped even the smartest of cultivators. He's Hiding Fragrances. I have no idea why he agreed to this but I can appreciate the twisted sense of poetry in this. Doesn't really make me go feral, only because I'm confused why Literally No One suspected him of his crimes considering he pretty much spelled it out.
Gui Jiangjun (Ghost General): Homeboy was selling turnips and chilling with his fam in burial mounds while the cultivation world was naming him entirely out of his volition. It's a cool title, very goth and sexy, and Wen Ning will only be called that if he reclaims it. We support Wen Ning's rights in this house and He Is Not A Thing. I'm not quite feral yet but if anyone disagrees, it's On Sight for them.
Huadan Shou (Core Melting Hand): Wen Zhuliu, my dude, if you weren't partly responsible for the painful golden core situation, I would've been way more pleased with this. Again, sends a Clear Message and tells you that You Must Not Fuck With Him. I'm beginning to go feral and I don't know if it's because of my rage at the consequences of his actions or because this is actually a pretty powerful name to be called. Damn it.
Headshaker: Nie Huaisang 1000% planned this and I'm not even mad. My boy knew what he was doing and he Did It Right. The exact opposite energy of Jin Guangyao's title as in he literally pointed to the other guy saying idk man ask him about it. Very iconic. Very gay. Very Funny when you explore the possibilities of 10 years of head shaking as a sect leader. I am feeling quite feral in a fun kind of way but not nearly as feral as Nie Huaisang himself is.
Yiling Laozu (Yiling Patriarch): OKAY. Sexy. Hot. Chaotic but Righteous. I may be biased but Wei Wuxian being called Yiling Laozu is quite possibly my favourite title because hell yeah he's a protector of his people and he Will Fight anyone who fucks with them. And he will look Very Hot doing that with his goth outfits and sexy black smoke and haunting tunes. Ugh. I'm going Very Feral in the best, most 'I'm in love with a necromancer' way. Lan Wangji really stood no chance, did he.
Zewu-Jun (Brilliance Overgrowth Lord/Lord of Munificent Waters): I am In Pain. I am Screaming. I have not known a single moment of Peace since I found this out. Why. Why is Lan Xichen called that. He's a Good Person. You could've called him Anything and THAT'S what you came up with?!?!! Literal translation Lord of Damp Overgrown Weeds??!!!??!!!!! I Don't Care if it sounds better with context, I am FILLED with sheer murderous RAGE and I WILL lose my MIND. How did he NOT go on a rampage after this. How is the entire plot just not his villain origin story motivated by his fucking name. I am FULLY FERAL and NOTHING can stop me now. Lan Qiren I Am Coming For You.

wwx needs “a band of tyrannical ghost generals to do his bidding”, which in exr is just “a ghost soldier to follow his orders”. the original says 鬼将 gui jiang, which literally means ghost+general. compare that to 鬼将军 gui jiangjun, wen ning’s ‘the ghost general’, and i’m not sure what the meaning is here. is gui jiang just like, wwx’s name for a powerful corpse that will do his bidding? does he specifically want a wn 2.0?
in general (hehe), it’s interesting that until the characters in question appear, wwx doesn’t really think about his family, friends or lan zhan. he just... goes places and does things; we’re told “he’s managed to hunt down a handful of little devils from the graves he broke into” (wei wuxian. i was rooting for you), but we’re not really given a glimpse into his thoughts re: what has happened to everyone. hm!
...but also, 小鬼 also means “little devil” in the... little kid sense lol;; chinese is a fun language

Part 3 - Characters + Multiple Names
How the names work
The family name always comes first.
The two names you will see following the family name is the birth name, and the courtesy name.
Some of the characters have titles as well, so some characters have three names in use throughout the show.
We’ll use Lan Wangji as an example.
Family name - Lan
Birth name - Lan Zhan
Courtesy name - Lan Wangji
Title - Hanguang-Jun
Things to remember:
The birth name is rarely used by anyone other than close family members, teachers, and elders in the family, clan, or Sect. Using it implies either a certain type of intimacy, or a certain type of seniority over the person being spoken to.
Side Note: The fact that Wei Wuxian addresses Lan Wangji as Lan Zhan so early on in their acquaintance would be considered rude and/or crass.
The courtesy name, in The Untamed, is given early on. In many wuxia/xianxia novels, you will find the characters don’t receive their courtesy name until they are adults. This is a name friends, acquaintances and peers (those of equal standing) use.
The title is just what it says on the box. It is used to express respect, but also a certain amount of distance.
Side Note: The young disciples of the Gusu Lan call Lan Wangji Hanguang-Jun because it would be disrespectful for them to address him as Lan Wangji, as they are not of equal standing. When Wei Wuxian returns from the Burial Mounds, he addresses Lan Wangji as Hanguang-Jun because he wants to distance himself from their earlier intimacy to prevent being questioned about his methods.
