possibly underappreciated Good Omens fics I enjoyed once upon a time

Indirectly inspired by a video series about fanfiction I watched, I decided to pull together a list of Good Omens fics I have bookmarked as stories I enjoyed, but which have less than 250-300 kudos at the time I’m writing this. No particular order. They’re accompanied by short excerpts from my private fic reading notes (not originally intended to be read by anyone but me, mind), sometimes slightly edited for clarity—and, sometimes, the comments I left on the fics.

This list sat in my drafts for a long time and the recent S2 announcement reminded me of it. I’d love it if it inspired you to do something similar! Spread the love.

thermodynamic equilibrium ▲ 7K the author has such an ear for dialogue and is unapologetic about what they want to write the characters like. They think of the characters as a mix of TV and book canon, but they feel like a homemade blend to me. (...) It’s very funny.

such dear follies ▲ 6K I can really picture this Aziraphale—Crowley as well, but her especially. She’s rather distinct. (...) Nice writing.

The Words Were With - △ 1.2K post-Blitz vignette, Aziraphale realizes what he feels and wonders if they're human enough for this. I liked it, and I liked the tag "transhumanism, but in reverse?", too—what an interesting idea. I'd say it's a vignette in a dire need of a follow-up, but, well, there's the show. The show is the follow-up. It fits very nicely within the canon and I totally believe it could have happened, like a deleted scene.

Gossip and Good Counsel △ 19K/? I love their companionship and how they're set up to be opposites by the management even though they get on pretty well. It feels very in keeping with the canon, but I feel like the fact that it's an F/F set in this particular time period adds a meaningful layer to the situation. It's women supporting each other in the world of men, working with the personas that are created for them, but, privately, being normal, well-rounded people. (...) and of course your writing is always a pleasure to read. (...) SDHDGDHDHDG Maisie is truly an Aziraphale.

Crowley Went Down to Georgia (he was looking for a soul to steal) △ 6K This was nice. Based on a song I didn’t know. Crowley goes to a funeral in the USA, one of a fiddler he knew and lost a bet to once. (...) The fic has not one but two songs composed for it and embedded inside it and that makes it even better. I really enjoyed the experience.

The Thing With Feathers △ 18K WARLOCK you'rE HORRIBLE AND I LOVE IT I would read an entire novel-length fic just of Crowley fighting his battles with Warlock. Written like this? It would be a blast. (...) The OCs are believably characterized and well-loved by the story. (...) Everyone seems to need a friend in this house. (...) This was so fun, and at the same time, their mission has weight here (...) We wonder about what the future holds even though we know it.

Here Quiet Find △ 11K This fic aimed for my head and the aim was sure precise. It was a story of Crowley sensing Aziraphale's distress and finding him in a self-quarantined English village in the seventeenth century, tired and anxious. It's hurt/comfort, so there was washing and bedsharing and I had to love it, so I did.

outside of time △ 2K Post-Almostgeddon, (...) nicely-written, short, but strung with a soft kind of tension and unspoken words. There's no drama, just "can we really", and "do you really" of sudden freedom. They fall into being inseparable. Book canon, which I like for this story (sitting on a tarmac). I liked the footnotes. There's a mention of Eliot. All in all, very much yes.

She'asani Yisrael △ 2K It’s Crowley going through a two-hour service and drinking blessed wine. He also keeps an eye on a boy he was asked to. It’s 1946. It was pretty good, so far the best Jewish GO fic, I think, from the ones I’ve read.

To Guard The Eastern Gate △ 11K  I loved it. You really made Sodom feel lived-in; the description of Keret, Hurriya and Yassib's house and relationship were great. I got attached to both them and the city (...) Aziraphale and Crawley’s interactions were generally very entertaining. I laughed (...) Your rendering of their voices just lands so well (...) But then oh, the entire ending (...) hurt, hurt a lot, and your descriptions are so vivid.

If you’ve been waiting (for falling in love) △ 14K AAAAA a good ending line. The whole paragraph, in fact. I love a good smattering of philosophy in my fics, and this was really nice. I can get behind Thomas Aequinus's and Crowley's view on eternity. It's (...) a pretty simple fic (...) - the courage to express yourself and take a risk is awarded with winning what was at stake by the virtue of reciprocity - but the way it was intertwined with a study of how they would experience a forever was done well. 

Holy unnecessary ▲ 2.2K It's well-written. (...) this is my type of sexual humour if I have any. So subtle. Blink and you'll miss it. Lovely.

The Parting Glass △ 17K Through the ages, they're dancing around their relationship until after the Armageddoff. (...) Wow, this was really, really nice. Very simple in its concept and nothing I haven't read before, but very well-executed. (...) AAAAH I LOVED the first chapter. I always like abbeys as settings, that's a given, but the banter, the good writing, the moral ambiguity!

Name The Sky △ 33K This Crowley is different, but very intriguing. Without his sarcastic talk, and much more animalistic. (...) I love how expressive Crowley is. (...) This fic has a very nice balance of drama and levity. I don't love Crowley-before-the-Fall stories very much, but with this execution I can read about it. (...) Okay I've read Crowley offering fruits, and even Aziraphale biting fruits, but the two of them sharing the apple? Outstanding. Ingenious. What a take.

A Flame in Your Heart △ 5K post-Blitz (why are so many dance fics post-Blitz?), they go to the bookshop and have an actually believable conversation. Then they dance the gavotte. It was really nice! Believable writing, emotions, the dancing! (...) Of course it's too early for them, (...) but the author's note? yeah.

Put down the apple, Adam, and come away with me ▲ 32K At this point it's just reading original stories with characters with names and some personality traits that I recognize. (...) I really enjoy this, the careful dance, the opposition between their views. (...) This is well-written, wow. (...) it's not an easy read (...) this story feels very believably 50s, but also reaches out to the present time. 

Liebestraum ▲ 10K/? It really is like music. I'm enjoying the writing a lot. (...) oh my actual god. This, this? Wow, uh. This came for my throat. (...) THE MUSICAL COMPOSITION, THE MOTIF RETURNING, THE AUTHOR KNOWS WHERE IT'S AT (...) Excellent. This hits the right beats so precisely, (...) and with feeling, too.

Down Comforter △ 2.4K and they lay down in angeldown, a soft rug ‘neath their heads– alright. Well, Crowley lies under Aziraphale's wing on a Persian rug after the Apocalypse, and they talk (...). It was sweet.

The Corsair of Carcosa △ 5K Crowley wakes up from a nap, visits Aziraphale for some drinking, and they read The King in Yellow that he happens to own. Good writing, so I'm bought. Aziraphale mentions Beardsley, so I'm bought twice over. My god, a discussion of etheral/occult madness? Caused by some wrong/true reading? Yes.

Very Good, Omens! △ 6K It's rather well-written, well-pastiched. People don't do that too often, nowadays - try to write in the style of a particular writer. (...) I love wordplay like this.

Reviving Robin Hood: The Complicated Process of Crème Brûlée △ 30K it's well-written (...), has a rhythm to it, and quiet humour. (...) Finally some nice, good, light writing. The attention to detail! (...) I'm still reading most of it aloud, the rhythm of it compels me to. (...) okay this does sound like Pratchett&Gaiman, the Good Omens itself (...) The fic is meandering, hilarious, sensitive in all the right places, and overall lovely.

my dear acquaintance △ 1K Oh. Oh. Yes, yes! Aziraphale in Russia, Russia I've never been in, but I can feel the snow and the evening of. Very real, and the bar, too. Attention to detail - vodka flavoured with dill, what on earth? Yes. He would totally have a distinct taste in operas and he would totally complain about a subpar one. I'm glad Tchaikovsky's there.

there is a crack in everything △ 1.8K This was good! Ah. Inspired by a comment (...), I went looking for Mr. Harrison and Mr. Cortese fics—really, what a big brain moment someone had and why have I never thought to look for them? This is Crowley getting suddenly anxious and Aziraphale going out of his way, through all his layers of not-thinking and denial, to console him. I also really liked how the Arrangement is a carefully unacknowledged partnership-marriage.

Scales And Gold And Wings And Scars △ 6K  No conflict, no plot, one tiny arc like a ripple on the surface of water on a calm sunny day - of Aziraphale discovering Crowley’s scars. It's the South Downs and it's early summer. They bask and swim in a spring. Non-sexual nudity, love in the air like a scent. Nice.

Nineteen Footnotes In Search Of A Story △ 0.4K This is a Good Omens story told only through footnotes. Your mind can fill in the gaps. Fascinating (...). Also, it’s an experiment so apt for this particular fandom.

Hell on Earth △ 6.5K Oh, I loved it! How could I not love it: it's Beelzebub-centric, it's historical, it has classical painting, and even a hilarious scene with a cuneiform phrase, as if I didn't enjoy this story enough already. There are so few Beelzebub fics out there and I find searching for them very difficult (I accept recs if anyone has any), and it's such a shame, so this was really like a gift to the fandom. I absolutely adore the way you portrayed them, small, frightening, powerful, and confident. Also, it was super fun to see how different Crowley seems when we're not in his POV or in a story about him and Aziraphale. (...)

Go Up to Ramoth-Gilead and Triumph △ 24K Daegaer is... pure class. (...) hdhdhdh what pfttt why you so funny (...) I love this Crowley. (...) This got unexpectedly intense. (...) I love the little nods to the fact that Israelites, especially the poorer ones, still believe in other gods. I also really like that they sleep on roofs. It's just the kind of detail that grounds the story and shows that the author is, in fact, a historian.

Introducing My Fallout OCs!

OMGGGG y’all, I can’t. I’ve apparently reached over 200 of you fantabulous followers and I am so ecstatic! I honestly don’t even know if this is considered a milestone or anything, but I was super psyched, so I'm doing something about it, dang it!

Also, just a heads up on me right now, I just started school again, so my posting miiiiiiight be a bit sporadic every now and then, but I’m determined to still try and get a few posts out every week, so we’ll see how that goes. I’m also pretty backed up on requests at the moment, I’m still accepting them for the time being, but I may turn off my asks if I’m finding difficulty getting to everyone.  

Anyways, I know I don’t ever really talk about my Fallout Original Characters, but I’m thinking of doing some stuff with them in the future, so this seemed like a good place to start  🤷‍♀️ So, here they are! One from each of the 3 FO games I write for. If ya’ll want to send in any asks about these folks, please feel free to do so!

My Lone Wanderer: Hope

Appearance: 

- Basically like a black-haired, blue eyed Sarah Connor (y’know, from Terminator), she’s got a small frame, but is an absolute beast. She loves to change up her hair, but prefers the iron maiden, unladylike, or rude ridge styles and will often dye it bright-ass colors, cuz why not? She’s pretty pale considering the vault background and the fact she is constantly wearing full body combat or leather armor when she’s outdoors, and she has a few piercings she actually got before leaving the vault. 

What’s in a Name: 

- “Hope” was the name that her parents chose for her before she was even born, but she can’t stand it, she just tends to see it as a cruel joke in the world they live in. She instead goes by Effie (short for Ephialtes, cuz she’s edgy and dramatic and read too much in school). Hope tends not to tell anyone her real name, and if she does, you’d best not use it to refer to her, unless you like being enslaved. The only one who could ever get away with it is Jericho and a select few people from the vault (Stanley, and her father, but she’s still not happy about it.)

Sexuality: 

- Pansexual

Main Companion: 

- Jericho

Relationship(s): 

- She has a sort of “friends with benefits” type situation going with Jericho, but it ends up getting... complicated, and turning somewhat into a relationship.

Bestie(s):

- Even though he’s her boss, Hope likes to hang out with Eulogy when she’s in Paradise Falls. When she was in the vault, she spent a lot of time with Stanley, and was pretty close with Butch, Wally, and Paul as well. 

Fam Dam: 

- James and Catherine are/were her parents (obviously). But she also considered Stanley to be a sort of uncle to her. 

Karma: 

- Oh, the worst. She’s honestly awful. She steals, she murders, she enslaves, she blows up settlements, all of it. She’s got a lot of things she needs to work out...

Faction of Choice: 

- The Slavers of Paradise Falls. (Yeah... she sucks.) The Brotherhood and the Outcasts just never really struck her fancy, and her and Jericho found it was easy to make bank with the slavers. Hope also is a friend to Allistair Tenpenny and Mister Burke... and not the folks in Megaton. Cuz they’re all not really alive.

Vault Occupation: 

- Engineer

Fun Fact!:  

- Hope is really bad with empathy, and absolutely needs to experience something for herself before she can make any sort of judgement on it, or other people who have had that same experience.

My Courier Six: Sage

Appearence: 

- Sage doesn’t really consider herself very “flashy” in comparison to most folks in NV. She’s got shoulder length brown hair (blast back or clean cut style) and brownish-hazel eyes. She’s pretty damn tan (Mojave, you know) and doesn’t have many scars, but the ones on the right side of her forehead clearly indicate where she was shot in the head (thanks, Benny). She and Boone tend to twin quite a bit, with matching red berets and sunglasses.

What’s in a Name: 

- The poor girl has no clue what her real name was before she was shot, but she saw a box of labelled herbs in Doc Mitchell’s house when she was recovering from her headwounds and decided she liked the name “Sage.”

Sexuality: 

- Bisexual

Main Companion: 

- Craig Boone

Relationship: 

- Also Boone :) it’s a pretty darn slow-burn romance with lots of bumps along the way, but their love always seems to prevail. (Gross and sappy, I know)

Bestie(s): 

- Arcade, plus Rex, and ED-E. Also Victor and Doc Mitchell.

Fam Dam: 

- No clue, unfortunately. She eventually tries to find out something about her past and her family, if she has any, but she’s got a few things to deal with first (hint, one rhymes with pleaser’s fleegion).

Karma: 

- She may make mistakes along the way, but Sage really does try her best to be as good as possible. 

Faction of Choice: 

- Mr. House and the Followers of the Apocalypse. Would like to get rid of House, but can't bring herself to become responsible for everything once he's gone. She considers herself his personal empathy and tries to assist with the goings on of the Mojave even after the battle of hoover dam. Fucking wiped out everyone in the Legion. Her and Boone are a force to be reckoned with. And she never really cared much for the Brotherhood since she had such little interaction with them. She has a good relationship with Freeside and most of the settlements/other towns as well.

Previous Occupation: 

- Courier? She has no idea what else. But she’s oddly really good with medicine 🤔

Fun Fact!: 

- She supports Mr. House for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest is that she doesn't want to lose Victor. He saved her, and she considers the securitron to be her oldest friend (besides Doc Mitchell). She knows it's a little selfish, but she can't bring herself to put an end to him after he pulled her from her own grave and helped bring her back from the brink of death.

My Sole Survivor: Jolene Arvanidis-Ryan

Appearence: 

- She’s got auburn hair she usually keeps cut short (clean cut) or in a bun, green eyes, pale skin with a good amount of freckles and has exceptionally straight teeth (braces suck, but you know.) When traveling with Cait, people tend to think they’re related. Jolene tends to wear a black beret and, if she has the time and resources, she likes cat eye style eyeliner. 

What’s in a Name: 

- Her first name runs in the family... plus her dad really liked Dolly Parton, so that helped cement the first name for him. Nate���s last name was Arvanidis, and she tends to use that as her last name exclusively, she rarely reveals her maiden name (Ryan) to anyone. 

Sexuality: 

- Straight

Main Companion: 

- Paladin Danse

Relationship: 

- It takes a long time (post BB), but she ends up being with Danse. 

Bestie(s): 

- MacCready and Cait

Fam Dam:  

- Pre-war, her father was a carpenter and her mother was a major in the US military, she had no siblings and was very close with her father since her mom was often away on deployment. 

Karma: 

- Decent. Tries her best to do what’s “right,” but she sometimes has a hard time determining what that is. Is good at following orders, even if she doesn’t always agree with them (BB is the exception in this case).

Faction of Choice: 

- Brotherhood of Steel, at least until BB, then she tends to focus more on the Minutemen, but still stays by the BOS’s side when it comes to taking down the Institute. Despite her loyalty to the BOS, she always regrets what she did to the Railroad, and how she ended things with the Institute, and she holds quite a bit of resentment towards Elder Maxson for ordering her to pull the trigger that ended her son’s life, and the other lives within the Institute. 

Previous Occupation (Pre-War): 

- She was a Gunnery Sergeant in the US Military. (Trying to follow in her mother’s footsteps).

Fun Fact!: 

- She hates killing feral ghouls, but keeps it under wraps since she tends to travel with MacCready and Danse the most. After that random encounter where she found herself murdering her own neighbors, she can’t bring herself to look into the eyes of any feral ghouls she has to kill. 

Bonus! Fun Fact!:  

- She started out as my sort of "throw away" playthrough where I wanted to do a BOS run, just out of curiosity, but she ended up being my main playthrough… probably because Danse is just the best and I can't get enough of that tin can thesaur-ass.

The original character was her idea and then we just ran with the story. I write all Billy's parts and she writes her OCs, we then share the rest of the characters. The OC is a badass and the story gets a little... dark lmao its also real kinky and full of angst and just... I love it. I hope you guys give it a read when we do post it. It's my Billy but a little darker but you'll see what I mean when you read it lmao

She's also helping me write my zombie apocalypse AU Billy x Reader story I had in mind. Again I'm writing Billy and she does Reader. It's been super fun so far.

1. are you going to buy the new pack (cottage living) when it comes out? no, it looks really nice but i legit never ever buy packs at launch, especially cause this one is a expansion and it will probably go on sale at some point

2. do you p*rate your dlc or buy it legitimately? buy it legitimately 👌

3. what’s your favorite world? brindleton bay, it gives like seaside cottage vibes. willow creek is good but it’s boring. 

4. if you use a queue, how many posts per day do you set it as? 3 or 4. i used to do like 12 lmaoo what even was wrong with me

5. do you watch sims on youtube? yes, i watch mainly malixa, oshinsims, and msgryphi

6. what are your thoughts on the most recent pack? (dream home decorator) those sectional couches look good! but honestly im kinda annoyed because now it’s even harder to have all the items filled in when i place lots from the gallery. like i’m just saying like a lot of builds will use that pack probably and if i don’t get it then i can’t really use builds/save files

my old old simblr was a sideblog but it had like 1 follower and it literally a bot so i don’t think that counts. i have a multifandom sideblog though 

10. do you have a cc finds blog? i wish. i was thinking bout it earlier and that would be sooo neat but sometimes i download stuff that doesn’t have a tumblr post attached to it, and also it’s stressful to keep up with so nah

11. are you wcif friendly? yes sir. in fact i bring the trouble of wcifs onto myself but doing them even when nobody asked.

12. what’s your favorite sized household to play with? (ex. 1 sim, 4 sims) gonna have to think on this one, honestly 1 sim is really fun and stuff goes by so fast. doing stuff with astrid when she was on her own, it was much more efficient. 

for families, i haven’t done that in a while actually. 5, 2 parents and 3 kids is cute tho. why did i write this this is honestly such a hard question

13. if you have c&d, do you play with pets? i feel like i haven’t played with cats and dogs in forever. honestly i just have no paitence. noelle fae was supposed to get a cat (there’s a food bowl + cat bed in her house) but when summer vacation started, the amount of time i spent playing ts4 decreased a lot. (this doesn’t really make sense, i have a lot more time. honestly it just has to do with my recent obsession with a certain anime/manga and some other personal thing)

i did random nightmares in may though and i had pets frequently. g5 didn’t because sofia scarlett lived in an apartment, but g2/3/4 had cici, and g1 had all the cats. but that was back in march so it’s been a while.

14. what lifespan do you use? i really want to do aging off but then i feel like it drags on. but aging legit stresses me out, sometimes i just want to sit down and do some cas stuff but i only have 2 hours in real time and there’s like 4 days left till one of my sims’ birthdays. 

15. if you own a lot of packs, how many of them have you actually played through? just so everyone is aware this question was made for me

i feel like eps require a specific save made for testing them out, but the only save i’ve ever made for an ep is noelle fae’s get famous save. 

that is literally a lie - i made a save for island living with one of my 100bc kids, maisie acapella. i did actually post it on tumblr BUT then i deleted all the posts BUT i reblogged them on my alt account BUT i privated my alt account so i honestly forgot about it

i have never played through discover university or watched anyone do it on youtube, i’ve read gerbits’ story about it so i think i’m pretty qualified. i’ve always wanted to do one with periwinkle acapella but i never got around to it

another ep i know nothing about is get to work

i tried doing a eco life playthrough but i hadn’t watched any videos and i was like..what is going on. so i quit lolx d ;;;;; i mentioned it but the whimsy stories legacy was the first time i had played with the eco lifestyle features so technically i think i know what im doing

i got outdoor retreat literally on monday of this week so i haven’t played through it yet. 

jungle adventure i still don’t know what’s going on. i remember last year before i bought the pack i was brainstorming, and wanted to do a ja playthrough with luna and cedar, who are a couple who i did a random legacy with and it was all queued to post when i deleted everything (if you’re wondering why, it’s because my queue was literally 200+ posts). except this time i didn’t save them to my sideblog so i lost them. 

i still havent had a restaurant in dine out 

also never did the vet thing from cats and dogs

i have no idea what that rock climbing thing is from snowy escape but i did most of the other stuff because rn g5

city living i did through psc stage 5 and also it was the first pack i bought anyways

the rest of them are either stuff packs or i ended up playing them through casual gameplay (seasons, parenthood)

16. what do you do as you play sims? (ex. listen to music) i listen to music most of the time, or listen to commentary youtube videos because i am an alpha chad. i also used to talk with my friends on voice call but i don’t do that anymore 🥲

17. which sims challenges have you tried? random legacy, whimsy stories, perfect sim challenge, 100 baby, legacy (just the plain get-to-10-gens one), random nightmares, berry zodiac, astrology legacy, apocalypse

i feel like im forgetting some.. honestly most of the stuff i did before simblr was either 100 baby (i love that challenge) or random saves that lasted for 2 seconds. 

18. do you like the new(ish) hair swatches? nah. 

i do appreciate that most cc hairs have a true (ish) black, thank god! and the fact that the hair update is what inspired me to update and fix a bunch of hairs with different issues is pretty nice. but will i use them? no.

noelle is blonde and has blue-grey eyes. she wears purple contacts pretty often though (because she wants to 😌)

alari has light brown hair that is kinda curly, and she’s got pretty vibrant blue eyes. 

they’re sisters, alari is 3 years older than noelle. noelle was 19 and alari was 22 when they got spotted

they worked as models when they were young adults. their jobs involved dyeing their hair blue/pink, and they would model like clothes and stuff. anyways, they were pretty successful. like not ultra famous but they had enough money to not work for the rest of their lives. 

their modeling group was made of 4 girls, the others were named paisley autumn and they were green and red, respectively. some things are: 

paisley and alari started dating during this 

autumn was a single mother to a little girl named destiny

noelle dated many people during this but never ended up finding the one <3

when their contract ended after like 6 years, paisley and alari went to go live together and noelle decided to get into acting. so thats when get famous playthrough started!

22. if you use cc, are there any cc creators that you have like ALL of their items? this is such a good question! i hoard hair very heavily (my folder is 11gb) i so i have like 97% from most of the popular hair creators. 

i think i had legitimately EVERYTHING from simstrouble though, i went through multiple times to check and i also have all of her retired stuff. 

i have everything from ridgeport i think-? because of the fact that she uploaded all her stuff in one big zip. 

i think that’s it.. for a long time i also had everything by clumsyalienn, but then i ended up deleting it and only keeping my faves.

i am changing my oc lore again to give mires a slightly better ending rather than “dying of a horrible disease by himself in the future”. & this also adds into diorr killing dys in the time loop bc i could never figure out how she finally did it without divine intervention (ie erl killing mar, who dys is aligned with). but having mires help her kill dys would be more satisfying for his story . also changing the FUTURE DISEASE eliminates my need to create another species of creature. yeah baby

ok so where we’re at rn is that after his first meeting with dys, she disguises herself as another person & also uses her abilities to make illusions & sleep deprives him & isolates him from other people & then when he’s reliant on her she fakes her persona’s death & sends him into The Bad Times & THEN uses him. 

i think it’d be more fun for her to try & appear to him like a sympathetic villains the way bitches on the internet (i’m bitches) love sympathetic villains, like she can be talked out of world domination & apocalypse, she’s just a girl who’s grieving the loss of her father & wants revenge so bad, etc etc. but she’s playing him like a damn fiddle. mires does all the mind-reading work for her willingly & she allows him to think that he’s changing her for the better, but she’s completely a bitch & lying so none of it is true. but all the abusive tactics ie the isolation/gaslighting/etc etc remain the same bc i researched those a while ago when i was first writing this. maybe she also is like “we can bring your brother back too” since i just made up his brother last month but that’s another trauma point for him. 

anyway she does her Grand Evil Reveal & infects him with the rotting disease & sends him to the future, where he is doing absolutely shit ass awful because he is 1. rotting, & 2. horrible awful mental state, 3. people want to study him because he has a giant glowing eyeball in the middle of his head. the rotting disease spreads from there & it’s too late by the time people realize something’s up. we have had this pandemic the past year so i dont even need to research how people would react & not take it seriously :/ 

anyway!! i haven’t decided exactly how it would work - i originally thought the apocalypse would happen something like this in 2 parts. 1: machine rebellion. 2: coordinated void creature attack (if y’all remember that lady lud loved earth so much she neglected her other planets to the point where all life on them became corrupted & evil & rotten, & this evil life went & attacked zelir’s planets, which is why he showed up to kill her in the first place & she sealed away the evil planets as an apology, but the evil lifeforms were just in a void dimension waiting for their chance & dys made contact with them etc etc). 

but i think it would be cooler if i could make thrass into more of a mad scientist type shit since he was made to be a genius anyway - he developed some kind of disease that rots your flesh & transforms you into a void creature/turns your body into an incubator+portal type thing where you’ll explode & die? something based on your life force so the older/stronger you were the more powerful beast comes out (this paves the way for mires to become the host of something truly awful) i haven’t thought htat out yet, but it’s a lot easier than dys having to create a species of swarming crawler species that dutifully scratches at the fiber of reality every day. dys has access to lud’s magic but she doesn’t understand how to undo the seal? or maybe zelir helped seal it too & she doesn’t want to get rid of her father’s remaining wish even though he was a huge cunt. i actually have no clue how she feels towards him aside from in my lore where i wrote that he spoils her but i assme it was some kind of love. 

anyway, that all happens, mires infects everyone in the future, apocalypse begins. since he’s still got his limited immortality (aka heigtened resilience, won’t age) he hasn’t succumbed to the disease yet. it’s just destroying him slowly. he encounters diorr early on & they become friends & travel together for a while & mires is also able to tell her everything he knows about dys, but mires is steadily getting worse. diorr (abandonment issues) does not want mires to leave & still naively believes he can be cured, & he agrees with her that he’d never leave bc he doesn’t want to make her sad. when he realizes he’s about to transform/change/etc he leaves in the middle of the night anyway  & she never sees him again. diorr trauma moment --> diorr decides to stop making friends. 

maybe on her journey to dys’s pcket dimension she keeps encountering an especially large & tenacious fucked up creature. thats mires. would she ever realize? i don’t know.  what does the creatuer want. to kill her? why. does it remember anything? let’s put a pin in it. 

anyway thrass gets sick & bored of dys’s power trip & figures out how to allow diorr to keep her memory between time loops. thrass is so bored. he misses pop music. dys doesn’t need his help anymore but she won’t kill him. he just sits around all day. he isn’t exactly betraying her bc he has no allegience to diorr either he’s just bored. 

anyway eventually mires (evil mutated form) shows up with enough sentience to help diorr kill. he has a moment to get a killing blow in (is this still related to the divine intervention erl kills mar bit? i would like them to kill her with their own power bc it’s more impactful but also my 14-year-old self is still hooked on hopeless situations completely out of the main character control where tthey’re saved only through some kind of accident, so why not both??) but he still hesitates bc of everything he’s been through & gets incapacitated, but it’s the normal anime shit of he wakes up in time to take a killing blow/allow diorr to land the blow 

so that’s another good moment because when she finally kills dys it’s bc she made friends (mires) & mires gets his revenge, sort of. 

then the rest is the same: diorr’s robot half is strong enough to absorb the energy from lady lud’s eye & channel it properly & revert the world so everything is okay again, mires (dying) has a vision of lady lud coming to him & taking her eye from his forehead & he almost follows her but decides to go on living. & he wakes up & he is no longer a fucked up monster & he’s ok. or at least ok as he can be with like 3 centuries of trauma.

or i do wake him up with NO memories of his past, he lived his life as normal, but he meets diorr again like “hey do i know you?” & she’s like “i don’t think so”. maybe his family is alive....man would it be fucked if she dragged him back into this whole war thing right when he’s living an okay life? should she be friends with him again or should she just avoid him? maybe he eventually approaches her like “don’t i know you?” & she lies to him to avoid sucking him into the new drama of ERL KLILED MAR EVERYTHING IS UNBALANCED but he ends up helping anyway. 

i want him to live a happy life because he deserves it but i don’t know what his happy life would be. well that’s all for now i’ll come back one day.

oh yeah after dys’s death, thrass vanishes. maybe he’ll become a radio dj or a sound guy for concerts. i want him doing something completely mundane. maybe he lives in a small town & everyone is eventually like “yeah that’s Thrass, he works twice a week at the library & is a regular at the local restaurant. no we don’t know why he is the way he is but that doesn’t bother us.” i think that’d be fun.

Coming Attractions!

Yes, I know it’s Friday, not Monday. <.< ANYWAY.

Before we get started, plugging my Discord server (which is p. quiet lately but it’s there if you want to talk somewhere other than here!); and also we’ll do another Open Question Night because Why Not!

As I said last month, while my askbox is always open, tonight I’ll be actively around to answer questions--about writing in general, anything I’ve posted about here on tumblr; anything on my AO3...let me know what’s on your mind!

Star Wars:

SWBB:

Take a Bond of Fate is officially up! (Previously referred to as just SWBB 2021 or the Dragonshifters AU because I literally titled it less than twelve hours before posting <.<) Well, the first 20k are up, anyway. I will be updating throughout the month and the fic will be complete by the end of the month, per the event rules. (I originally planned to do updates on Tuesdays and Fridays; tonight’s update will be delayed and who knows how well I’ll actually stick to it after tonight but it Will be posted in full by the end of May, I can say that much for sure XD)

As always, I think there are a few things I could’ve handled better/that feel a little rushed, but I think it turned out pretty good! There are some upcoming scenes I’m particularly fond of, but we’ll see if everyone else agrees. The core of this actually ended up being Bo and Padme? Which I was not expecting--I was expecting it to lean hard on the Bo and Anakin parallels, but here we are.

Anyway, there’s some fun bits to come!

Precipice:

No solid update ATM. Uh. Various Life things got bonkers over the past month or two, so TaBoF took pretty much all of my fic brain. However, since that project is essentially finished other than finalizing/polishing each update chunk as I post, I should be able to turn my attention here this month. Which means, fingers crossed, we’ll have a start date sometime in June for Protectors. I’ll post the first Preludes segment at the same time; it will involve Kallus, Lavinia, and Mara Jade, set just before Kallus is reassigned to Lothal.

(Others that I have planned will involve: 1) some combination of Kanan, Ezra, Hondo, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and Anakin; 2) Hera and whoever her contact is in this AU, as Ahsoka is otherwise occupied; 3) Whatever Maul is up to in this timeline; 4) Something to do with Palpatine’s fifth apprentice; and two more I haven’t decided on. I am taking suggestions! The purpose of Preludes is to patch some holes now that I’ve decided to write Rebels into the canon, which was not part of my original plan as I hadn’t yet seen it when I started planning/posting this AU. So these are more plot-relevant than the things that turn up in Bonus Content, which is why they’re in a separate fic, but not really enough to make a full arc between Milestones and Escalation, so, there it is.)

I’m now leaning towards sitting on this and using it for next year’s Big Bang? Because then maybe I’ll finally finish it, lol...anyway, I’m also going to see how people respond to stuff in TaBoF, because that will either Boost my enthusiasm for the project or, uh, the opposite, depending on how people respond to how I write Bo-Katan. So that may change, and I may finally get it out this year instead of next. We’ll see how that goes XD

Other SW Projects:

One of the SW discords I’m on has revived a prompt game we did last summer. I pulled my first prompt but haven’t actually, uh, done anything with it yet. <.< I’ll do that at some point.

As for various outlines or extant AUs I haven’t updated in forever...well, like I said, what little fic brain hasn’t been on BB the past month or two has been drifting back towards Precipice or occasionally co-opted by OFLAM so...yeah, nothing serious to report on that front, lol.

AtLA Projects:

I’m semi-planning/hoping to start posting At Least one of the two longfics I’ve been poking at sometime this summer. I’ve mentioned them here before, but one is long and tragic and focuses on Lu Ten; the other is an Avatar Zuko AU. Not sure which will draw my focus and get up first, but I do plan to write both of them! And possibly more. Because this fandom just Does That to me, lol.

Also, as I’ve mentioned in various times and places--I am pathologically incapable of not creating a bunch of OCs when I seriously fall into a fandom, and my AtLA work, in particular, will probably reflect that. I don’t super plan to write anything really centered on any OCs (I mean, apart from characters who Exist but have very little Canon Characterization (i.e., Lu Ten himself for that one fic, lol); and Lu Ten’s love interest because that’s an important part of the story), but they will be There and Prominent Characters. This is mostly mentioned because I know OCs aren’t for everyone, so that might put you off of my AtLA fic and I figured it was fair to give you a head’s up.

(...although actually I think none of my old fic that I crossposted to AO3 had significant OC involvement except for Glory...but then again that’s all oneshots and a little different.)

Other Fandoms:

BSG/SG-1 (BSG1?) crossover AU is still coming; I keep getting sidetracked from actually finishing it <.< I haven’t even finished the New Caprica and Haven section, I still have to get to the algae planet and then the Resurrection ship and...maybe I’ll end up posting this in chunks...

Uh, nothing else super planned, but as I mentioned last month, this outline might draw me back into BSG fandom a little more actively because it’s another forever fandom of mine.

Original Fiction:

I’m actually really proud of the Regency AU I wrote for a challenge last month, based on my Apocalypse In SPACE ‘verse Lux.

I need to update the Lux and Farglass Cycle archives still, and will hopefully be posting at least one other thing to RF this month, but we’ll see how that goes. I also might or might not be diving into Arthuriana in all its weirdness and glory this summer to prep for actually writing that Lady Mordred idea I had. And there are always other projects on the back burner, but that’s where things stand here.

...I think that pretty much covers it! Not all that much of an update, but as I said, Life got all...Lifey at me, plus BB had a hard deadline, so that’s where the most detail is.

The roleplay can be completely platonic or include romance! But remember; if you want to include romance between two or more YouTube stars, you must be aware that it is a fictional situation and the pairing is not something to obsess over. OCs are welcome, too! I'll gladly play as one of your comfort stars for a character and I can play as more than one character at a time!

Now, let me share my plot ideas with you!

Plot #1: Among Us

Ten YouTubers are placed in a virtual reality simulation for a full 48 hours. In this simulation, the team of ten is placed on a spacecraft by the government and sent off to search for alien life. The problem is; two of the crewmates amongst them are already aliens, hungry killers at that. Character A is an imposter who actually feels guilty about the mayhem they have to cause, especially since they can hear and see the ghosts of those they've killed. Character B is an innocent crewmate who anxiously sides with Character A and the two team up until Character B finally becomes suspicious. But just as Character B tries to get away..Character A brings them down. Now Character A is haunted by their ghost until the end of the simulation.

Plot #2: Angels and Demons

Character A is a beast known as a fallen angel. Fallen Angels are forced out of heaven for supposed wrongdoings, and in this case, Character A is framed for a murder that they did not commit. This turns Character A into a cold-blooded bastard who doesn't trust anyone, not even the demons they're forced to live amongst now. Meanwhile, Character B was sent to hell completely on accident. Their friend attempted to summon a demon, which required a sacrifice. Character B became said sacrifice and ended up here as a supposed punishment for assisting in the summoning. When Character B meets Character A, they try to help the fallen angel go back to their positive ways so the two can go back to heaven together.

Plot #3: Band AU

Character A is the lead singer of a band that they created with their two best friends. One of those best friends is Character B, who has never sang for the band before, but has been secretly writing song lyrics and singing when they're alone. When Character A doesn't notice that Character B is trying to get their attention with their own songs, Character B goes to one of the members of the band's tour group for comfort. Character A becomes jealous, seeing Character B with another person, and decides to write a song about them, not knowing that all Character B wants is to be in the spotlight just once.

Plot #4: My Hero

Character A has been living a peaceful life in their apartment in the city for a few years now. But when Character B moves in next door, things take a sudden and unexpected turn. It gets to a point where Character A can hear yelling and banging on the walls every night and actually becomes concerned for Character B's safety. However, when Character A goes to confront Character B, they claim that they're not in any danger, despite living with a partner with anger issues. And the worst part is..Character B has a young child, an infant that's caught up in this mess too. Character A is determined to get both Character B and their child out of their abusive home and to help them recover.

Plot #5: Wolf Pack AU

In Mystery Falls, there's a large, dense forest that consists of four different wolf packs. Each pack owns their own area of land and isn't allowed to infiltrate any of the other territories without permission. But all of these wolves have a secret..they're actually a species known as Lycans. Lycans have both a human and a wolf form. They're identified as Alpha, Omega or Beta, based on their gender and sexual orientation. Each pack of Lycans has an Alpha leader, an Omega queen, and a Beta guard leader. The guard is the group of wolves that goes hunting with the Alpha every half-moon. Character A is the Alpha leader and after a fire occurs across their previous territory, not only is the pack forced to move, but the leader loses their partner and their pups. This makes them a stern leader, who shows no mercy and treats others like they don't mean as much to the pack. Character B is originally just a human, but after being attacked by another pack leader, they find themselves turning into a Lycan and come across Character A's pack, asking for their help. Character A originally insists upon turning Character B away, until the pack decides that Character B can act as a temporary queen until Character A gets another mate. Character A ends up finding a new friendship in Character B, and the two slowly become inseparable.

Plot #6: Zombie Apocalypse

Character A had just been arrested after being framed for the murder of a stranger. While on their way to jail in the back of a police car, something slams into the windshield and the vehicle crashes on the side of the road. When Character A wakes up from being unconscious, they find the police officer that was driving the car is now dead and that they're surrounded by..zombies. Character A manages to get rid of their handcuffs, finds a weapon and gets to work on shooting away at the zombies crawling around them. Once they can make a run for it, they escape into the nearest house, which appears to be abandoned. But it's not abandoned. Character B is a child that was abandoned by their parents and is hiding in the treehouse right outside of the abandoned home. The home was actually invaded by zombies, and Character B's parents are..dead. Character A begrudgingly gains Character B's trust and the two become traveling partners as they try to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Plot #7: Superhero AU

Character A is the hero of the city. A masked and mysterious character that everyone admires because of their strength and bravery. Character B is a new villain who has come to destroy the city and leaves their trail for Character A to find. The two would never admit it out loud, but they actually enjoy playing their little game of cat and mouse together. When Character A ends up in trouble due to the wrongdoings of another bad guy, they're much surprised to find that Character B is there to save them. That's when Character A realizes that Character B isn't so bad after all and is now determined to teach Character B how to be a good person, despite the fact that Character B runs away every time Character A comes across them.

Plot #8: Littlespace

Character A has been a caregiver for a few different age regressors over the years. They love taking care of those who are vulnerable and are in need of a new way to cope. However, none of the age regressors they've ever cared for have stuck around for a long time. The previous littles have only relied on Character A until they found someone else to take care of them. So when Character B, one of Character A's closest friends, reaches out with an interest in learning more about what it's like to age regress, Character A is shocked but more than happy to be the best caregiver possible for their friend.

anon u GOT IT i’ve been wanting to talk abt the gang for so long!!!!! when i saw this ask i lost my marbles!!! knowin that someone is actually interested in these guys makes me so happy!!! so!! here they are!!!  also!! apologies that it took me so long to actually answer, i wanted to be able to say all of the lore for lizzie (who hadn’t had her chara arc in rp at the time) and by the time i got her arc done i ran flat outta spoons nbfkgb,, but i got my spoons back and whipped up a few lil pictures to go with this so hopefully that makes up for it!!! oki here we go!! under a cut because talking about five separate charas is gonna get long ndfjkv

ZAPPELINE VOLTAIRE

she/he/they | genderfluid | somewhere between 25-37 y/o zap is basically my main character! she used to be a scientist who worked on interdimensional research, more specifically what the theoretical effects of interdimensional travel/portals would be on the human body and the safety of all of that. at one point the lab she worked at lost funding, but she decided to fuck around there before it got demolished because why not! she did a few experiments on herself, including changing her natural hair color and making it so that she could see an extra color. the latter of which did not work out entirely as planned, because the rods in her eyes didn’t grow in quite right. so! now she has red-green colorblindness in her right eye, and something similar to tritanomaly in her left, which is why she wears those funky glasses!

gonna be honest, i’m still working on a way to properly explain the next bit without it getting super boring or incomprehensible, but tdlr the new colors corresponds to a wavelengths that interdimensional rifts emit, so now she can see interdimensional rifts! she noodles out a way to build an interdimensional portal using some leftover notes from one of her co-workers, and jumps through! she ended up getting too excited about the portal and forgets to make sure it’s stable, and it ends up collapsing the second she gets through. so now she’s stuck in the multiverse! fun! after a bit of dimension-hopping, mad science, and the entire plot of polychrome (a game concept im workin on!!), she lands herself in zimcon!

SPARKPLUG VOLTAIRE

sparkplug was originally built by zap to be her impulse control! this did not work! for context, zap used to be a really shitty supervillain before zimcon, so i kinda made sparkplug to be her sidekick/henchman? but in the way that’s like, supervillain is really nice and respectful to their “underlings” and basically treats them as equals and as friends, because i love that trope so fucking much. the original joke was “haha the supervillain has pack-bonded with the box!” but then the box turned into a kid and well! here we are. eventually after just. existing for a while they developed their own personality, and pretty much just became a regular kid! they arrived at zimcon as a box, but later on they end up asking zap for an astroboy-style body! as of writing this they haven’t gotten it yet, but that’s just because the rp’s kinda on pause right now. i do wanna say tho i have a special lil bit of art for it ready that hopefully yall will enjoy!!

god just. i hate elizabeth! i really do. she’s another version of zap who is basically just an evil boomer who can’t even be fun or dramatic about it. in polychrome, she takes over as the big bad of the game. i feel like she works a lot better in polychrome just because that’s what she was made for, tbh. she and zap used to work together at one point, but due to a lot of arguing, many disagreements and some other Events(tm), started hating each other. she’s literally no fun at all and i can’t really expand upon her all that much without going into spoilers territory so that’s about it for her.

lizzie is a ghost! she’s an alternate version of zap that died before she could ever leave her home dimension. after she died, she was quite literally chained to her death spot for over 700 years. when she died though, she was given a contract that said she could be freed if she got someone to sign it, the person signing it would be able to have her do whatever they want, but once she finished the task she could be free. if the person signing felt that she wasn’t doing a good enough job, they could rip up the contract and she’d be sent back to her death spot. it sounds bad, but it was all she had so she tried her best to get someone to sign! unfortunately though, in the few months where there were still people around, she hadn’t been able to figure out how to get herself to be visible again. just before she figured that out, the world underwent some kind of apocalypse, and all the people were wiped out. so she had no choice but to just kinda sit there and vibe for 700 years.

that is until elizabeth came along! liz signs her contract, and lizzie starts working as a henchman for her. the elizabeth arc happens (which is basically elizabeth helps lizzie possess zap and tells her to erase the con members’ memories, she does this, people are pissed, lizzie gets knocked out of zap’s body, zap dies, comes back, and beats the shit out of elizabeth and later sacrifices her to a crab) and liz decides to send her back for not doing a good enough job. so she goes back to her death spot, and after a night’s stay makes a deal with an eldritch blonde twink to gain her freedom.

bastard!! bastard man!! reggie is the one responsible for lizzie’s (and a few other peoples’) death(s). he has a job in the underworld which is basically just “take care of this huge monster that eats parts of people’s identity.” he found that feeding it souls worked best, so instead of finding lost souls he just decided it’d be easier to get some new ones. in order to kill people without getting caught, he disguises all his murders as accidents. lizzie’s happened to be a falling stage light that hit her on the head real hard. it’s not a cool or fun death and it makes her real mad ndjvkdf

lizzie was left there for so long because reggie pretty much just forgot about her. he left her the contract to give her some form of hope, which would keep her from fading away completely, but she was chained there so he could come back when he remembered. when liz signed her contract he got some sort of notice about it, and decided to come back to lizzie later for some shits and giggles. when they met up, he told her if she could find a soul to trade he’d give her her freedom. she accepts, and picks zap to trade, hoping that getting rid of her would help her earn liz’s approval (it didn’t). zap gets sent to this weird hell maze, and when a few others get in the way they get sent there too. lizzie eventually gets talked down from sending more and more people to the hell maze, and she lets them out. she’s tired of hurting people, and wants to give helping others a try! at the moment, reggie isn’t aware that lizzie let them out of the maze (and thus, isn’t gonna give him a soul to trade). if he finds out it’ll be bad, but for now she’s just vibing and trying her best to be nice!

reggie’s very much inspired by hate and dial from tpoh, and a lot of lizzie’s story is inspired by my personal theories on blondie/rgb’s death!! its basically “how many tpoh references can i cram into this: the arc.” it’s unbelievable the amount of shit i was allowed to get away with with nobody calling me out nfjdkvsf

It’s Like Watching Fanfiction – An (Un)Necessarily Long Critique of The 100 Seasons 6 and 7

Ah, the familiar cry of the content-starved fan, particularly as our favorite shows descend into the depths of mischaracterization, unexpected ships, hiatus, abrupt cancellation and shock-value death endings. I’ve said it myself about so many of my shows, while wanting to spend some time watching the characters but not wanting to re-hash episodes I’ve nearly memorized: “I wish I could just watch fanfiction!”

But the further into seasons 6 and 7 I’ve gotten, the more I’ve come to realize that my dream of having new and exciting possibilities for the characters come miraculously to a screen near me wouldn’t be the pleasant experience I’d imagined.

Now, depending on the type of ending you like – hopeful but with a lot of lose ends left to your imagination, or bittersweet but more definite, you could consider either seasons 1-4 or 1-5 their own complete stories.

Both seasons 4 and 5 ended in a way that suggested an unknown but likely positive future. They could have been considered conclusions for the main characters’ developmental arcs, and while season 5 went a little off the rails in terms of offscreen character development and sudden new characters, they both stayed fairly close to the original concept: survivors living in the ruins of the apocalypse. All four (or five) seasons emphasized the importance of the found family dynamic (although those dynamics shifted radically in season 5 due to the time-skip, they remained an important source of character motivation).

But seasons 6 and 7? Those feel like I’m watching fanfiction. And I don’t love it.

A story told on a whole new planet with a new environment, culture and cast of original characters was always going to feel like an AU – it sort of is, no matter how you swing it. If that was all that had changed, then I think the story would still feel cohesive.

If it weren’t for the timey whimey bullshit.

Now, fun fact: when reading fanfiction, I love time travel stories. I haven’t posted any myself but I’ve sought out and read them voraciously, for every fandom I’m in. I love the idea of characters meeting themselves or their friends at radically different ages, plot points and levels of experience and the way that changes things for both groups. (Yes, I’m also a Whovian if that wasn’t blatantly obvious). I also love a good amnesia arc. And I DID think that the Josephine/Clarke body possession thing was pretty cool.

So why did season 6 and most* of season 7 fall as flat for me as they did?

The simple fact is that some things – and characters’ emotional dynamics are one of those things – are so much easier to get across in writing than on screen. A good actor can make us feel the character’s emotions, but unless the film goes full-on Clarke’s mind space, we can’t really know what they’re thinking in individual moments. For the most part film as a genre has ways around this, but if it’s mishandled, then the emotional beats come off all wrong. (See for reference Tony Stark’s funeral where half the actors didn’t know what was going on due to Disney’s spoiler fears.)

If you’re going to include time skips in which things have happened and character dynamics have changed, you cannot handle it wrong.

Which brings us back to seasons 6 and (so far) 7 of The 100. So far to date we’ve had all of this occur either offscreen or asynchronously enough to be confusing to an audience watching the episodes in real time:

Jordan’s entire life prior to meeting Napkru in the waking world

Octavia’s character development while living on Skyring with the Diyozas

Hope’s first 22 years of life, on Skyring and (I presume) Bardo

Echo, Hope and Gabriel living on Skyring for 5 years with Orlando

Going back a little further, we also have the season 5 timeskip, which brought us Spacekru as found family, Clarke adopting tiny!heda, and Octavia building Wonkru. Now season 5 took care to show us Wonkru flashbacks and dedicate time to show Spacekru and the Griffin family loving on each other, making inside jokes etc. But it was still incredibly jarring for the audience in a lot of ways, because at the end of the day, we’ve spent four years with the character dynamics and development doing one thing, and no amount of telling us that they’ve had 6 years to do another thing while our time with them only lasted about one year in comparison is ever going to undo the importance of “show don’t tell.”

Let’s take Bellarkers’ beef with Becho for example. (Disclaimer: Since I don’t really have a strong opinion either way on the popular Bellamy ships, I hope that I’m representing what I’ve read from other people accurately.)

I understand cognitively that Bellamy and Clarke knew each other for one year (during which they were in a lot of intense situations that really didn’t leave them the emotional space to figure out how they felt about each other outside of “I don’t want to lose this person”) and Bellamy and Echo knew each other for seven years (six of which they had plenty of low-stress time to get to know each other, grow and mature side-by-side, etc.).

But that doesn’t compute on an emotional level when I as a watcher went straight from watching Bellamy and Raven tearfully eulogizing Clarke on the ring, to him turning up with a coffee mug and a plucky attitude to rescue her the second he finds out she’s alive and in trouble. I don’t think that could compute emotionally for me without having spent the last few years watching the dynamics shift and Becho happen. And that was with the writers giving me as a watcher an episode at the end of season 4 where Bellamy stops Echo from killing herself and connects with her on an emotional level, and then one at the beginning of season 5 where we got to see the spacekru dynamics, including them being together.

So we’re watching this show, many of us for the found family character relationships (god knows it’s not for all the positive happy feeling I get from watching *checks notes* ah, yes, characters having to constantly choose who to kill off in a string of increasingly huge and horrible genocides. *Side-eyes my life choices for getting into this fandom in the first place.*) Okay, we’re watching this show for the characters, and between seasons 4 and 5, many of those dynamics radically shift offscreen. Becho is the easiest and probably most talked-about example (well, and the Blake siblings, but the radical change shown in Octavia’s character between 4 and 5 makes that at least a little easier to choke down) but there are plenty of others, take your pick.

Although it makes perfect sense for a lot to change between separated groups of people in a half dozen years, it makes a lot less sense to an audience watching week to week, particularly when the show’s limited amount of screen time was too focused on plot to really delve into those changes and let us see and understand them. That was what made me think that the show was headed into jump the shark territory in season 5, but I really wanted to know what happened to my faves (Octavia, Raven and Memori, to be specific) so I kept watching.

Our fandom’s excellent writers spent the hiatus crafting mid-time-skip vignettes and missing character moments, and I spent the hiatus reading them. And I remember thinking that it would have been great if even a quarter of this content could have been put into the show to ease the audience into the dynamic shifts – but of course they’d never have the screen time to do all of that.

Especially, coming back to the main point, since written fiction allows the audience to see inside the characters’ heads, while television (usually) does not. It’s much easier to write a scene in which, say, two characters who have known each other for 7 years show that they’ve gotten into a relationship some time before the scene, and convince the audience that their relationship is good and healthy and genuine, than it would be to produce one for TV.  

And then we come to seasons 6 and 7 – the 2-part AU longfic, stuffed full of OCs, loosely connected to the “science” of the original show, and heavily reliant on memory-bending time travel as a plot device.

As season 6 airs, the audience hasn’t really had a chance to process all the radical changes from season 5, and already we have a Marper child running around furthering the plot, and Octavia walks into the Green Flash from Pirates of the Caribbean and walks back out with a personality transplant.

Meanwhile, Clarke gets an actual personality transplant, and it takes even the people closest to her a concerningly long time to notice. Now, if I’d read that in a fic, the writer might’ve taken care to remind me as a reader – particularly after a long hiatus between seasons – that with the exception of Madi none of Clarke’s friends have seen her for more than a couple of weeks in 6 years, so them not noticing for a while that she’s behaving strangely isn’t really all that strange. But on TV, I don’t get to see Gaia’s thoughts when Clarke lets Madi go to school despite the danger – Tati Gabrielle’s facial expressions can only do so much to make up the difference. Because the time spent apart was not (and really could not be, based on the structure of the show) properly acknowledged on screen, scenes like that one leave audiences floundering and pointing out bad writing.

Having watched 7x02 The Garden, I think if I went back and watched season 6 after Octavia returns from the Anomaly, her conduct – especially around Bellamy – would make a lot more sense. (That was the plan for this weekend actually – but my damn Wi-Fi conked out…) However at the time it just seemed weird and unnatural. Had it been the only example of off-screen or asynchronous character development, it would have been a lot easier to swallow. However, season 5 happened, meaning both that I was still getting used to all of the new dynamics and that I had a higher standard for Octavia’s off-screen development, because we got enough bunker flashbacks that I felt like I at least understood Blodreina.

What would have made the whole thing make a lot more sense a year ago would have been if the hair and makeup department had made an effort to make her look older, so that we could see time had passed for her. Now, Marie is 33 in real life, and so was the Octavia who figured out that up is down and got Davy Jones Locker to send her back ran out of the Anomaly, so yes, that is what an actual 33-year-old looks like, and the media has distorted my perception of age. But from an audience perspective, I saw an actress playing a 23-year-old go in, and the same actress playing the same 23-year-old come out.

Gabriel pointed out that her hair was longer, but that only accounted for a few months of time. Since she went in looking dirty, wounded and exhausted, and came out clean, healthy and energetic, she could have passed for younger before I would have thought she was older. (In fact, I want to say there was a theory circulating at that time that the Octavia who came out of the Anomaly was actually a younger version of herself, and she was missing memories because she’d never formed them. I don’t remember whose theory this was though. If you know or if it’s your content I’m referencing please feel free to let me know and I’ll edit!)

In addition, the shifting loyalties in Wonkru near the end of season 5 complicated the character situation – in season 6, the majority of Wonkru peeps (lookin’ at you, Miller and Indra) switched over to the commander’s side. While Indra didn’t really have enough screen time to express an opinion about Octavia, Miller was very clear in season 6 that she was anathema now – which although that was probably a semi-reasonable step for his character, it just felt like someone took his Bellamy-and-or-Clarke-following season 1-4 character and popped it into his season 6 costume without taking the time to address the road he took to get there.

Post-lockerAnomaly Octavia had to face and slay her demons. (Grumbles and links the interested reader to this POST from @osleyakomwonkru regarding that horseshit.) Afterwards, she shows a major shift in personality, particularly towards her brother. Because we as the audience wouldn’t see her time on skyring for about year in real time (or learn that she was ten years older and therefore a lot more mature, the chemical changes of which would account for at least some of the difference even if she couldn’t remember anything else) we had no choice but to associate her change with the slaying of Blodreina, which seemed like a ham-fisted way of forcing her a quick and slick redemption arc and prepping The Blake Siblings to go back to being ride-or-die for each other in season 7.

Raven’s season 6 personality was also radically different from her 1-5 development – while I understand her having a remaining beef with Clarke and being emotional due to Shaw’s death (RIP!) the fact that the writing in season 6 reduced her to the nagging shrew trope until they needed her to do a coding deus ex machina just added to the feeling that I was watching someone take the characters around, change them to their own preferences (even if that preference was to push some into the background and make them tools for the B-plot) and toss them into an AU story. Which I could have enjoyed more if I had been reading it and therefore seeing inside the characters’ heads – and if I hadn’t paid for the privilege with ad revenue instead of voluntary clicks of the kudos/like/reblog/comment buttons.

Another issue with time skip relationship is exposition for the lesser known characters’ backstories. Both seasons 6 and 7 have so far had dramatic character mother death reveals that were conveniently not told to their most important people specifically because the appropriate time to tell those stories would have been during the offscreen time skips. I will (grudgingly) accept Echo, an adult making a conscious (and familiar) decision to change up her personality to fit into and survive within her environment, choosing not to tell a traumatic story that reminds her of her past. (She’s my next meta – stay tuned!)

I will not in a million years, however, believe that the Clarke Griffin who I watched for four seasons be set up as the blatantly obvious “compassionate mom-friend protagonist” adopted a traumatized 6-year-old, moved into said child’s village, burned or buried the bodies of everyone who lived there, and never ever brought up the child’s dead birth parents.

No way. The ONLY reason that could have possibly been scripted in that way was because that conversation needed to be there for plot reasons and the appropriate time for it to have been had was during the 6 years they spent off screen. Similarly, while (again) I’ll buy that Echo chose not to talk about her mom’s death with Bellamy before he decided to be a dick about it, I fully believe that the timing of that conversation was only there because if it had occurred on the ring where it would have been more appropriate, the audience would have missed it.

Now, picture this: if the scene with Madi had been in a written fanfic, Clarke could have said “you didn’t lose me,” Madi could have said “I didn’t mean you,” and Clarke could have remembered Madi telling her the story of her birth mom dying in her arms. Then Clarke could have mentally made the decision that she didn’t want Madi to relive that in an attempt to empathize with her, and she makes an effort to convince her that she’s fine. In just 2 or 3 paragraphs a written story could have effectively conveyed both the exposition and the emotional beats of the scene, concluding with Clarke making a (maybe misguided but still sweet) attempt to be a good mom by not dredging that up for Madi (or something – I’m not defending the crappy and inconsistent writing of Clarke’s parenting we’ve on screen so far).

Moving right along, we had a lovely flashback montage of Hope and Dev, which was sufficient to make me (and several of the tumblrs I follow) care about Dev at least enough to be saddened by his death. However, what we didn’t get was a damn crumb of flashback showing Orlando and Anomalykru developing any kind of familial relationship between him agreeing to train them, and whatever dynamic we were supposed to pick up on at the end of that episode. I got a little protective big sister vibe from Echo and Hope but that’s it. They apparently expended their allotment of emotion-inducing flashbacks on the dead guy, and failed entirely to make me give a shit about (as it turned out) the next dead guy.

Now we’re going into an episode with Octavia on (presumably) Bardo in the promo, so I’m guessing we get to see her skyring-self link up with her return-to-Gabriel-with-clean-hair self. As least with Octavia’s jumping storyline it seems like the writers have consistently made some kind of effort to fill in the blanks.

But we’re also looking at the rest of the season where Echo, Gabriel, Hope, oh hi Jordan I forgot about you again, Diyoza, Octavia, and probably Bellamy and Hoth!Kru (AKA team let’s follow Raven onto a strange planet without putting on suits or having an exit strategy, yay!) have all experienced asynchronous development over periods of multiple years. Given the show’s track record from seasons 5 and 6, I strongly suspect that this won’t be handled any better, meaning that the final season of this show is going to try not only to resolve all the plot points, but to toss in a bunch MORE offscreen character development and hope we catch on.

Beyond character development jumps, we also have Raven and Murphy losing their seasons 1-5 development in season 6 only to have to re-learn and re-change back to who they already were in seasons 4 and 5. Murphy learned to value his spacekru family and stop putting himself first 100% of the time, and yet his arc in season 6 happened. Raven has always been involved in the big life-or-death decisions, and had her being-the-bad-guy moment in season 4 with the rationing, but as we saw in 7x03 the writers really wanted to… redo all of that for her? The girl blew up a bridge full of guys and flash-fried a 300-person army when she was 18; blood on her hands may not be fun but what’s with seasons 6 and 7 acting like it’s something new?

While I’m aware that Jason said his seasons are individual movies (don’t admit that you’re bad at continuity buddy ‘cause that’s what it sounds like) seasons 1-5 and 6&7 are clearly telling separate stories (or 1-4, 5, 6-7 if you prefer). The trouble with 6&7 is that unlike seasons 1-4 (and sort-of 5) we no longer know the characters. Every time someone sits still too long, character-development wise, plot comes along and hits the reset button, tosses them into a wormhole for a couple of years and they come back with the same face but no continuity. It was difficult enough to deal with in season 5 – between 6 and 7 I just can’t keep up. (Even writing this meta, I have to keep going back because I remembered another character who fell into this trap.)

Now if a fanfic writer had done the exact same thing – same plot, same time skips, same organization – it would have played out completely different to the readers. We could have gotten to see inside the character’s minds when they arrived back on screen, seeing things with new, older eyes. We could have had minimally invasive flashbacks to show important exposition (like the disaster that was the conversation about Madi’s mom) and verbal descriptions to point out differences like Octavia’s ten-years-older body. Additionally, the plots of seasons 6 and 7 are so different yet full of overdone callbacks to the earlier seasons – if a fan was writing their own AU story but still wanted some of the trappings of the original plot I’d get it, but on a TV show written by the same people it just feels like they ran out of ideas.

Watching seasons 6 and 7 is exactly like watching fanfiction would be – but without the written and fan-made advantages of fanfiction, they fall flat.

*I do like season 7 better than season 6 because the content of the individual episodes containing Murphy/Emori/Raven and Octavia/Diyoza/bbyHope was still enjoyable content, so 2 out of 4 I have liked so far, despite this very very long rant I’ve just written explaining why as a whole I rather hate the season overall.

I have seen some fics of Five going to high school (and often falling in love with a 13 y/o oc girl which icks me tf out bc that’s an old man, guys) to socialize which gave me the idea of Five befriending old people who are also physically old. For example, Hannah, the German lady in her 80s who poisoned nazis when she was a child. Then there’s Joan who spent his life fighting to achieve his goals despite having to deal with near-constant racism. Just. Five getting along with all these old ppl

you’re RIGHT and consider: Klaus decides it’s a good idea to take Five along to his weekly ladies over fifty stitch ‘n bitch and is surprised and delighted to find that Five actually genuinely gets along with all of them

there is, of course, Hannah who poisoned Nazis and her and five trade poisoning methods the way other people might trade coveted family recipes. Hannah declares Five to be a “nice young man” and the fact that she is in her 80s or 90s means that she is absolutely allowed to get away with it

Fiona is a 60something butch lesbian who proudly displays her mugshots along the walls of her house for everyone to gaze upon in awe when it’s her turn to host. Her wife, Mandy, always makes snickerdoodle cookies and fondly talks about the time her and “Fee” got arrested because Fee kicked a cop in the balls or something. 

Doris was an army nurse during her youth and can curse well enough to make a sailor blush and has the bawdiest sense of humor to match. She spends most of her time knitting baby socks and hats to donate and volunteers at a community center where she sneaks food to any hungry teens who have all adopted her as their odd aunt.

Nada immigrated in her teens with her parents and has had to deal with Islamophobia her entire life. She wears a khimār that she knitted herself and laughs when Five genuinely offers to kill any assholes who harass her. Instead, she starts teaching him Arabic since her own grandchildren unfortunately do not speak it

Edith was trans before anybody even knew what that meant and she teaches Five patterns for interesting dresses and fancy sweaters since Five expresses some interest in diversifying his wardrobe (Five personally stands by the fact that skirts and dresses are the best because!! if you lift up front you have INSTANT POCKET/BAG which was very useful in the apocalypse!! of course now his family protest about him flashing underwear or whatever. Edith just introduces him to wearing leggings under and calls it a day)

Kathy killed her first husband and everyone knows it even if she was never convicted. She spends her days volunteering at centers for domestic violence and working with abused women and children. She tells Klaus and Five quite plainly that if Reginald were still alive she would kill him, and they laugh but they absolutely believe her. Five sincerely tells her he would kill her husband if he were still alive as well, and Kathy grins and winks and says she beat him to that one

and all the others. Sally who worked customer service her whole life and lived to tell the tale. Ruby who was widowed young and raised four kids by herself. Alice who is deaf and signs slowly because her parents thought she needed speech therapy to appear normal more than she needed an actual way to communicate. Becca was a teen during the civil rights movement and witnessed schools being desegregated, and is quick to remind everyone that it wasn’t as long ago as they think - she remembers the white kids jeering and the protests like it was yesterday. Susan’s husband died in the Vietnam war and she is very quiet when she finds out that he was in Klaus’s unit. 

A rotating cast of women with vibrant and brilliant and unique lives who parade through. Some are fixtures, some come when they’re able which isn’t often, some only pop in on the rare occasion when the planets align.

“Go get the salsa dip, Five.” Kathy orders.

“Why do I always have to fetch everything.” Five complains, even as he stands up.

“Because you can teleport.” Kathy says with a shrug, “If I could teleport then it would be me going to get the salsa, wouldn’t it?”

Five goes and gets the damn salsa.

One time a new woman is very confused and asks about Klaus and Five’s presence at the Women’s 50 and over knitting club (“It’s the stitch ‘n bitch,” Klaus mutters under his breath and is ignored) and everyone just kind of shrugs. 

“Women and nonbinary old person support and knitting group?” Edith suggests but everyone agrees that that’s a bit of a mouthful.

“But they’re too young?” The new woman asks again, helplessly.

“Actually Klaus fought with my husband in the Vietnam war.” Susan interjects cheerfully before Klaus can start his theatrics, passing the oatmeal raisin cookies to Hannah who is cackling delightedly, “And Five assassinated President Kennedy, I think.”

“Allegedly assassinated President Kennedy.” Five corrects with a flourish of his knitting needles as Kathy nods in approval.

Also, in regards to your setting, what would be the (abridged) history of Mobius in your vision of things? If you feel like explaining it, I mean.

I can give it a go, but keep in mind that I am constantly revising my ideas, and I tend to vacillate between what I want to keep in and what I don’t. I’m a ditherer, it’s true ID;

I really do need to make a master document of this crap though, even if the most detailed bits and pieces come from specific time periods in Mobius’ recent history. Either way, this is perpetually in Rough Draft mode, so what you see here might not be the same the next time you ask.

Anyway, let’s roll-

The Beginning

-To begin with, Mobius is a unique world in that it undergoes something we’ll call “The Gaia Cycle”, in which life develops on the planet, advances greatly before leaving/self destructing, leading Dark Gaia to emerge in order to wipe the slate clean, which in turn allows Light Gaia to renew the world and re-start life on the planet, so that the cycle begins again. As such, Mobius is indescribably ancient, having gone through the cycle several times over. The only constant is the Master Emerald and the Seven Chaos Emeralds.

-During this cycle, several individuals from the Old World are able to essentially acend to Godhood via the power of the Chaos Emeralds and mastering their energies, and so are able to escape the end of their world as the Gaia Cycle proceeds. As you can guess, these guys are basically to serve as stand-ins for the Ancient Walkers.

-For now we’ll call them the Titans. The Titans take charge of the various primal fundaments of the plane. They also take it upon themselves to oversee and help guide the development of life on the on the Soon To Be Mobius, overseeing the re-birth of the Dinosaurs before guiding the direction of evolution to lead to the creation of intelligent life far ahead of the usual schedule. Their plan is to oversee the development of a utopian society so that when the time comes for the Gaia Cycle to begin anew, more benevolent life will be left and spread from Mobius, all in the hopes of creating a universe of harmony unlike the ones they had survived.

-Naturally, one of them has other plans and believes that they should RULE over creation rather than guiding and guarding it. The most powerful of their number attempts to convince the others of her viewpoint. When that fails she tries to seize control of creation by force, killing several other Titans before she is defeated. Suffering an unhealing wound that saps her of her cosmic power, The Fallen Titan is banished by the others and sealed beneath a mountain for her crimes.

-The surviving Titans though are not unscathed either, their injuries leaving them unable to directly intervene on Mobius as they once did while regulating the energies that comprise their world. Rather than letting the primal forces run unchecked, they fall into the role of distant, observant Gods, only intervening when able and moving in subtle and mysterious ways.

Early Mobius

-Life on Mobius proceeds onward as intended- the myriad new forms of intelligent life on Mobius develop sentience, tools and the like. Life takes on many strange and wondrous forms on Mobius, from your standard humans and Mobians to more fantastical creatures like dragons. Primitive magic is developed by these early prehistoric societies, and through them understanding of the various Higher Powers begins to emerge. In particular, worship of Light Gaia/Dark Gaia becomes widespread. At this stage of things, the various peoples of Mobius stick to their own kind.

Then, one day, something happens- The Fallen Titan escapes from her confinement.

Though greatly weakened and lacking most of her power, The Fallen Titan still retains certain advantages- namely immortality, and the power to manipulate the forces of Chaos. Cast in the shape of a great serpent, the Fallen Titan regains her ‘footing’ and develops a unique power- that of being able to awaken Chaos Powers within others or nullifying similar powers.

The Fallen Titan, through her powers, quickly establishes a cult around herself, and through her powers amasses a great army. She comes to be known by the name of Vokara, and through her army conquers many tribes. Through her a great and terrible city is built, and she establishes the first civilization on Mobius. This comes to be known as the First Great Civilization.

(In case it isn’t obvious, Vokara is pretty much meant to fill-in for Mammoth Mogul. She started out as an attempt to differentiate Lyric, but the sheer differences eventually led me to just go ‘screw it’ and make an OC)

Standing as Goddess-Queen of the First Great Empire, Vokara researches means of bringing the Chaos Emeralds to her, knowing that they are the key to regaining her original might. Eventually the Master Emerald is located and brought to her, and by communing with it she re-discovers the knowledge of how to access the Special Zone. She houses the Master Emerald in a great temple, and through its power mutates a Chao to become its very first Guardian- Chaos.

As you can imagine, it eventually all goes to shit. On the eve of receiving the Seventh Emerald and re-attaining her lost Godhood, a hero arises to challenge Vokara and lead the oppressed peoples of Mobius in a great rebellion against her. This hero becomes the first ‘Super’ on Mobius, and the cataclysmic final battle levels her great city and sends her Chaos Temple crumbling. The Chaos Emeralds themselves do not return to the Special Zone, and are instead spread across Mobius to become objects of

Though the First City is destroyed, the Vokarik Empire’s influence lives on in its former vassal states, many of whom build off the various advances that occurred under the Vokarik regime to advance themselves forward. Trade and exploration begin to flourish. Vokara meanwhile retreats to the shadows, deciding to take advantage of her long life and try for a more long term, subtle approach to regaining her lost Godhood. Across the centuries she begins to form cults, secret societies and conspiracies to serve her ends, taking on multiple names and identities as she does so.

The longest lasting and most enduring of these is The Order of the Black Emerald.

-After this point things get a bit hazy. Two more Great Civilizations come and go, and eventually the Master Emerald winds up in the hands of the Echidna, along with the Seven Chaos Emeralds.

-The Echidna manage to become the keepers of the Master Emerald, which takes up a great place of importance within their mythology. The Echidna develop into multiple clans, but the two most important are the Nakbe Clan, a society of warriors, and the Nocturnus Clan, who focus on science. The Nakbe Clan are the keepers of the Master Emerald and eventually the Chaos Emeralds, which they keep enshrined. Chaos, the First Guardian, is placated by the company of Chao. The Nakbe Clan eschews advanced science in favor of physical might, and learns to channel the power of the Emeralds to make their warriors all the stronger.

-The Nocturnus, focusing on science, developes rapidly and becomes a highly influential and widespread nation in of themselves. They will be known as The Fourth Great Civilization. While initially things are peaceful between the Nocturnus and the Nakbe clans, gradually the Nakbe Clan sets down a path of conquest and imperialism. In response the Nocturnus develop the Gizoids and march down a path of counter-conquest under the leadership of Pir’oth Ix. The two forces battle viciously, but in the end even the Chaos Enhanced warriors of the Nakbe clan prove to be no match for the Nocturnus, and are pushed to the brink of defeat. Then, mysteriously, the capital city of the Nocturnus simply vanishes, drawn away by a mysterious creature known as Argus (that may or may not have been drawn to Mobius by the efforts of the Order of the Black Emerald).

-The victory of the Nakbe clan is short lived. Pushed to the brink by their losses and left vulnerable, the peoples they pillaged in the past gather and begin to seek vengeance against their oppressors. In desperation, Pachachamac raids the Emerald Shrine in the hopes of turning the full might of the Chaos Emeralds against the attackers…. In doing so enraging the guardian Chaos, causing it to absorb the emeralds and subsequently going on a rampage that devastates the Echidna civilizations and many societies around the globe. Only through the sacrifice of Tikal is Chaos sealed away, but not before Mobius essentially undergoes an Apocalypse that sets it back thousands of years.

-In the aftermath of the devastation, the remnants of the Echidna band together. Realizing the dangers of the Master Emerald, one group of Echidna opts to take the Master Emerald to ensure that something like Chaos never happens again, while the other group decides to have nothing to do with the emeralds at all and migrates elsewhere to rebuild. Eventually, in the name of keeping the Master Emerald out of the wrong hands, the keepers of the ME use its power to create a floating island in the sky, which will come to be known as Angel Island.

What becomes of the ground bound remnant is unknown, and eventually the world will believe the Echidna people to be extinct.

-Past Mobius

-In the aftermath of the Deluge, Mobius is set back pretty far as most cities are devastated, and records of the past are hazy. Civilization tries to rebuild as best it can, but it’s on a decidedly uneven tilt. Consequently this is why you have ruins and weird ancient supertech hidden everywhere. It is during this time that the art of sorcery begins to develop and flourish. Mighty sorcerer-kings (and queens) arise from the ashes of technological civilization and establish dominance over the world. This is the Age of Sorcery, and it’s not really a fun time to exist.

-The Sorcerer-Kings rule and wage war against one another for many centuries, and actively suppress technology to keep their subjects in line. Despite this, pockets of civilization are able to resist this- chiefly the human city-state of Soleanna, which maintains scientific advancement even against the scrutiny the Sorcerer Kings of Mobius. The Soleannans spread the word of Solaris to the other peoples of Mobius, and in secret spread their technological knowledge as well. Eventually the Solaric Crusades are started, a mass uprising against the Sorcerer Kings and their magic. In the course of the crusade the Sorcerer Kings are defeated, but over the course of defeating the dark magics used by the Sorcerer Kings, many of Mobius’ more benign magical traditions are also exterminated as part of the Holy War as it turns into a crusade of magic itself.

When it is over, the Solar Empire is established across Mobius, with Soleanna as its capital.

-One consequence of the Solaric Crusades is that many of Mobius’ naturally mystical species (fantasy critters) are driven to flee from Mobius itself, using magic to cross dimensional barriers into the ‘Nameless Zone’ where they may live freely. Only a few choose to remain behind on Mobius, among them the mighty Dragons.

One of the Sorcerer Kings, Lazaar, builds a mighty fortress in a remote and desolate land, seeking to regain and rebuild his power and re-take the world. His dark magical experiments, left unchecked, pollute and corrupt the land around, creating what will one day be known as The Forbidden Zone. Lazaar uses his magic to create a homunculus to serve as his assistant, only for the homunculus to teach itself magic and betray Lazaar, trapping him within his own fortress and siphoning his powers for its own ends.

The Homunculus dubs itself ‘Naugus’, and continues where his master left off, eager to explore the possibilities of magic and its limits, while vowing to never be subject to the will of anyone ever again.

- Meanwhile on Angel Island….

After the devastation the Deluge and the raising of Angel Island, the Echidna remnants were able to advance in peace and isolation from Mobius. Slowly they regained much of their original technological prowess, and through their technology managed to keep any would-be explorers at bay. The Hidden Palace is created, within it the great Emerald Chamber to house the Master Emerald.

-The science of Chaos Physics, the study of Chaos Emeralds, emerges as a scientific discipline. Two scientists, Sayil and Xultun become leaders in their fields, seeking to better know the power of the Chaos Emeralds in the hopes of benefiting all Echidna kind. One of their projects is figuring out how to transfer Chaos Energy directly into a Mobian (in a kind of predecessor to the eventual experiments carried out by Gerald Robotnik). Something however goes horribly wrong, and there is an accident- one that results in Xultun being physically and mentally transformed by the experience.

-Now bitterly misanthropic and nihilistic, Xultun demonstrates the ability to control a strange, corrupted form of Chaos Energy. He eventually escapes confinement and becomes a terrorist against the Echidna nation, with his goal being nothing short of the elimination of all life on Mobius so that it might be ‘purified’. As the death toll mounts, Sayil sets out to take down her former friend and colleague. Uncovering ancient scrolls of the Nakbe Clan’s teachings, she learns a natural means of drawing power from the Master Emerald. From there she sets out to thwart Xultun, time and time again, eventually seeming to kill him. Much of the Angel Island civilization is devastated as a result, even if the rest of Mobius is saved.

-Realizing the dangers of the Master Emerald and its powers, Sayil in the aftermath takes it upon herself to become it’s protector, and as such she becomes the first Guardian of the Master Emerald. While the Echidna rebuild, Sayil uses her powers to locate the other Chaos Emeralds on Mobius, travelling the globe and gathering them so they will not fall into the wrong hands. During this time she clashes with both Vokara and Naugus, thwarting them both as they seek out the emeralds for their own ends. When finished, she returns to Angel Islands and promptly sends the Chaos Emeralds back into the Special Zone, hopefully out of reach of would-be tyrants.

-Sayil establishes the tradition of the Guardian by taking on an apprentice and successor of her choosing, teaching them her skills and literally transferring the power from herself to her student. Thus it follows that each new Guardian is chosen by the last, protector of the Master Emerald and the Echidna people.

-Xultun, wounded but not dead, retreats to a hidden laboratory base deep under the surface of Mobius. There he places himself in a recovery pod to undergo suspended animation while his injuries are healed. Due to an earthquake, the timing mechanism of his pod is damaged, and he remains in stasis for far longer than intended, dreaming dreams of dark destruction.

(In case it isn’t obvious, Xultun is basically an expy for Finitevus- all the pertinent details of him came from Flynn, and so I feel free to plunder them for my own use).

-As is the pattern of things, the Solar Empire reigns strong for many centuries before falling into excess, decadence and stagnation. The Solar Empire, once the heroes of the Age of Magic, gradually slide into tyranny and corruption, eventually becoming the sick man of Mobius as it desperately clings to power. During these declining years, the Solar Empire begins to resort to slave raids in order to replenish its laborers.

-It is at this stage of things that a new player enters the stage of history- Aneiron. Born to the Acorn clan of squirrels in one of the less developed forest regions of Mobius, Aneiron grew up in a time of constant inter-clan conflict between neighbors. Aneiron left home at a young age to become a wanderer, adventurer and mercenary, travelling far and wide across the known world and exposing himself to many different cultures and people. Learning the strengths of other nations, Aneiron became determined to give his own people that strength, as well as realizing the folly of constant warfare between species.

-Returning to his homeland and bringing with him new ideas, Aneiron became leader of his clan and bringing about radical changes. The most radical was the idea of co-operation between the races. Through careful diplomacy (and force of arms, when needed), Aneiron forged alliances with those who had traditionally been his people’s enemies. Under his guidance, the squirrels and their allies built the city of fortress of Mobotropolis- which meant “City For All Of Mobius”, a meeting ground for clan readers and place where different species could co-habit and trade freely, as well as a refuge for travelers.

-Though initially Aneiron’s Alliance is comprised of herbivores, to his shock, carnivores begin to come into the fold as well. This leads to some conflict, both from within and without, but in time ALL the clans of the realm are allied with one another. At this time, the Solar Empire begins to seek new lands to plunder- and the lands of Aneiron fall into their crosshairs. Raiding parties are sent, and colonies are built. Aneiron and his alliance converge, and Aneiron is voted to become Warlord of the Alliance. Under his military leadership, the Solar Empire’s army is driven back, and the colonies claimed for the Alliance- the people already living there are permitted to stay, under the condition of accepting vassalhood from the Acorn clan.

-This move reverberates around the Solar Empire, leading to uprisings that weaken it further, until the empire collapses completely (with generous help from Vokara and the Order of the Black Emerald). Several of the Solar Empire’s more distant city-states manage to avoid the worst of it and band together for mutual protection. This coalition of city states will eventually unify into a single polity, which will one day come to be known as The United Federation.

-Soleanna itself, despite the loss of its wider empire, manages to escape the collapse of the Solar Empire. Owing to its status as the Holy City of the Solaris faith, it is able to retain independence even as the Solar Empire itself breaks apart. It will survive, eventually becoming the Duchy of Soleanna in modern times.

-Generations pass. Clans develop into feudally based kingdoms. Aneiron’s great grandson breaks with all tradition and takes a chipmunk for a bride, permanently allying the two kingdoms to one another. Mobotropolis is expanded upon. A new and more terrible war brews, this time with the rival Kingdom of Duskmount. A mountainous kingdom of meager resources, the various peoples of Duskmount also banded together- not in mutual partnership, but in a stratified, caste-based civilization where breed determines position, with Deers forming the ruling caste. Seeking new resources and viewing the Alliance of the Acorn family as an affront to the Duskmount way of life, King Mordent Duskmount launches a war of conquest against the Alliance. The war lasts many years, but Duskmount is eventually beaten back, starting a bitter rivalry between the two realms.

-In the aftermath of the Duskmount War, the leadership of the Alliance begins to grow closer. The descendants of Aneiron begin to consolidate power by intermarrying fellow ruling families. Eventually, the Acorn family becomes the controlling family of the realm. War breaks out. Those that do not join willingly are soon forcibly brought to heel. The Alliance of the Forest Realm gives way to the official founding of the Kingdom of Acorn, with Mobotropolis as its capital. For the purposes of historic narrative, Aneiron is none the less credited as the founder and first ‘King’ of Acorn, even though in his lifetime he was only ever King of the Squirrels.

-The Kingdom of Acorn becomes a feudal monarchy, one where species is irrelevant but class is everything. It spreads forth, and eventually becomes one of the greatest empires in history.

-Present Mobius

-In the 800 years since its founding, the Kingdom of Acorn expands to become a great and mighty empire, though it never goes by that name. It influences the culture, economy and technology across all of Mobius, and helps to usher in what is known as ‘The Mobian Age’- an age where the various nation states of Mobius begin to discard species based division in favor of simply calling themselves ‘Mobian’. Whatever the crimes and cruelties of the Kingdom of Acorn, it at least done THAT much good. Though some nations continue to define themselves by species first, by the modern era the term ‘Mobian’ is almost default all across the globe.

-During its time the Kingdom of Acorn knows the highs and lows that come with every Empire- periods of prosperity, periods of hardship, civil war and renaissance, but throughout it all manages to hold onto power. By contrast, it’s longterm rival the Kingdom of Duskmount tries and fails continually to outdo Acorn, until eventually its own holdings are drawn back, the kingdom left a pale shadow of its former self by the modern era.

-The United Federation itself continues to soar and to grow, becoming one of if not THE dominant military and economic powers on the planet. It undergoes a period of great rapid technological advancement thanks to the brilliance of one Professor Gerald Robotnik, who is soon tasked with the single greatest feat of engineering- the space colony ARK, a symbol of scientific progress and of the future.

-Gerald Robotnik completes the Space Colony Ark, and is hit with tragic news- his young granddaughter Maria has been diagnosed with NIDS, which will one day kill her. Refusing to allow this, Gerald arranges to have Maria live with him upon the Ark, and he dedicates a portion of the colony’s research to curing her. To placate his backers within GUN’S military-industrial complex, he proposes the Eclipse Canon, and disguises his research for Maria as being done for the creation of an Ultimate Lifeform. This leads to project Shadow, and the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog, who quickly bonds with Maria.

-Unbeknownst to Gerald, GUN is not entirely in control of the situation- a portion of it has been subverted by agents of the Black Emerald, the true backers of the ARK project. Under investigation and in danger of being revealed, Vokara decides to cut her losses when it comes to the ARK- her agents send false information to GUN’s High Command, framing Gerald Robotnik for treasonous actions, while making sure that the ‘right’ officers would be sent to deal with the false problem. Gerald is recalled to the United Federation, and while he is being interrogated the raid is launched. Many people are killed as a result of the sloppily executed operation, including Maria Robotnik, and Shadow is jettisoned out of an escape pod, though he is swiftly reclaimed by GUN.

-The media report of the incident gives falsified information painting Gerald Robotnik as a dangerously unhinged mad scientist conducting unethical experiments on the ARK, leading to the raid, and the deaths that occur are pinned on him directly. Gerald, a broken man by this point, is taken to a GUN Black Site located under Prison Island, told to finish his work on Shadow or that he will die next. Gerald bleakly agrees, continuing to perfect his creation while tampering with Shadow’s mind in a long term plan for revenge. When it becomes clear that Gerald is not co-operating, he is executed. Shadow is placed in cold storage, for later potential use by the Black Emerald.

-The Robotnik family, disgraced by the ‘crimes’ of their patriarch, is forced to flee the United Federation for the Kingdom of Acorn. They take new names in their new home, becoming the ‘Kintobors’, while their eldest son Ivo is given the name of ‘Julian Kintobor’.

-The Kingdom of Acorn is in rotten state at this time. Under the reign of the belligerent and arrogant King Maximus Acorn, social progress grinds to a halt and even regresses in areas while his attempts to make the kingdom ‘strong’ simply bring misery and warfare. The long simmering resentment of the Kingdom’s colonies erupts into open separatist warfare, with Maximus refusing to seek any kind of compromise and instead feeding more and more of the Kingdom’s soldiers into the killing fields rather than show ‘weakness to the lesser’.

((Yeeah, Maximus is my commentary on good ol Maximilian. Before you ask, I envisioned him as a combination of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Tzar Nicolas II of Russia. Any resemblance to certain living political figures is entirely and unwantedly coincidental.))

-In fact, after the failure of the ARK, all of Mobius goes through some hard times as the established Old Powers of the planet are seen as slipping, failing and not doing enough to provide for its respective peoples. This leads to the rise of many new nations built upon new forms of government it, leading to the term ‘Neo Nation’ being bandied about. Though at first specifically referring to post Ark nations, it comes to mean ‘Any Country Less Than Two Centuries Old’, and as such includes old-but-still-young countries such as the Empire of New Babylon.

-Duskmount by this time has been in sharp decline for centuries, only to see its fortunes reversed under the direction of its newly crowned king, Vortigern. Under Vortigern’s direction the Kingdom is able to rescue itself from the brink, re-igniting and rejuvenating itself into a major nation after centuries of humiliation at the hands of the Acorn Kingdom. In time, it begins to exert itself militarily as well, re-absorbing old territories and gaining new ones in the process.

-Julian Kintobor grows up in the Kingdom of Acorn. Despised at home by his family due to inheriting his grandfather’s genius intellect and ostracized by his peers for the same, Julian quickly grows up to become mistrustful, bitter and misanthropic. At age 18 he is drafted to fight in the Colony Wars, made possible due to his father’s connections (the Kintobors slowly regaining their old wealth and prestige in their new homes). During his time in the army he meets and befriends fellow genius Charles Hedgehog, the first friend he has ever had. Their year of duty ensures they both see and endure many terrible things before the war finally concludes and they are sent home. The two work together to join the prestigious Royal Science Acadamy, and are both able to attain scholarships. They soar through college, becoming some of the youngest graduates in history, and soon go work for the Science Ministry.

-Vortigern Duskmount completes his re-conquest, and re-christens the Kingdom of Duskmount as the EMPIRE of Duskmount, with himself as first emperor. He enters into alliance with other Neo Nations, and through them proposes a means for all of them to gain more power and influence than ever before- by conquering the Old Powers and dividing up the resources between the Neo Nations. From this, the Neo Nation Alliance is formally announced.

-Years later, Vortigern succeeds in duping King Maximus into launching an attack on Duskmount territory, effectively making the Kingdom of Acorn the aggressor in what will come to be known as the Great War. Rallying his nation, Vortigern launches an attack on the Kingdom of Acorn and thus begins the Great War, while the other Neo Nations pursue their own targets. Maximus dies early on in a doomed, futile effort to personally lead his forces into battle. Within two years, the Kingdom of Acorn is forced to surrender before the military might of Duskmount. The Kingdom of Acorn is thus occupied and absorbed into Duskmount.

-Charles and Julian go underground to avoid the Dusmount Occupation force. They put their minds to building weapons and vehicles in secret, and begin to engage in a two man war against the Duskmount soldiers. Meanwhile, Vortigern orders the destruction of the entire Acorn bloodline so that no legitimate challengers to its throne may ever emerge. Only Maximus’ youngest son, Prince Galen Acorn, is able to escape this fate.

-Two organized resistance movements form in the Occupied Kingdom. Charles and Julian’s efforts draw others to their cause until they are a true resistance movement, and Julian retires from field work to become a full time strategist and leader. Galen meanwhile joins with a resistance movement comprised of the remnants of the Royal Army as well as civilian partisans, led by the surviving Warlord of the Realm. In time the two movements meet and merge to form the Acorn Resistance Army, under Julian’s leadership. During this time, the setbacks the occupation faces causes Vortigern to resort to more and more extreme measures, leading to greater and greater atrocities.

-With the Acorn Resistance Army in open rebellion and receiving aide from the militaries of the other Old Powers (including the United Federation), factories and foundries are captured by the resistance. Julian uses these to put his grand strategy in motion, building a great army of robots to fight against the forces of Duskmount. Soon a great army of Peacebots is marching upon Mobotropolis itself, though for reasons of politics it is Galen who is seen leading and liberating the city rather than Julian (not that Galen WANTED this). While Julian oversees a crucial battle elsewhere, Galen is able to confront and kill Vortigern in armed combat. With that, the Occupation is over.

-With the Kingdom Liberated, Julian swiftly gains control of the remaining major factories. His weapons and robots are created en-masse, and soon all the Neo Nation Alliance is under siege from seemingly endless Peacebot armies. Engaging them in a war of attrition they cannot win, the Neo Nation Alliance surrenders to the Old Powers. The Great War is won, and the world rebuilds after years of global bloodshed and destruction.

-Years pass, and peace is brief. Galen Acorn sets to become a reformer for the people, making moves to weaken the grip of the nobility and do away with the stratification of the Kingdom. The Aristocracy, resenting these attempts to limit their power and prestige and the shaking up of the social order, make things difficult for their king even as he attempts to shift the monarchy towards a more democratic form of government. Likewise, the widespread use of robots to rebuild the Kingdom leads to fears of job loss as paranoia about technology reaches a fever pitch, with riots and protests following. Anti-Colonial terrorism breaks out as well (aided in part by the Black Emerald as part of a plan to de-stabilize the Kingdom).

-Julian, despite his efforts, is stuck in place commanding the robot labor force of the Kingdom, watching as Charles becomes Science Minister and Galen is lauded as a War Hero even as the Kingdom teeters closer and closer to civil anarchy. A means of advancement is given to him with the offer of becoming the realm’s new Warlord. He is eventually caught in a terrorist bombing that claims the lives his wife and daughter, while he himself is on death’s door. To save his life, Charles Hedgehog unearths the Roboticizer, a medical device the two had worked on before the war broke out. Julian is fed through the Roboticizer and becomes a cyborg, saving his life. He accepts the position of warlord, and after months of physical therapy becomes the kingdom’s new Warlord.

-For the next several years Julian works to set a plan in motion- the conquest of Mobius. He ruthlessly deals with the terrorists threatening the Kingdom and puts an end to the protests, expanding the robot army while conspiring with the Battlebirds in secret. He takes on his nephew Snively as an assistant, and as part of his plan the Battlebird Armada emerges to raid distant shipping lanes. To deal with the threat and abate the fears of robots replacing the army wholesale, the remaining organic portion of the royal fleet is sent to deal with the problem.

-While they are away, Julian launches his coup- the robot armies he built to protect the kingdom now become its attackers, striking all across the globe in a sudden, frenzied march of conquest. The Kingdom of Acorn falls within days, and King Acorn himself vanishes without a trace, while his daughter Sally escapes with her friends to the hidden village of Knothole. With new territories secured, Julian spends the next several years overseeing the conquest of Mobius. One by one the armies of Mobius are destroyed before the mechanical onslaught. So is born the Robotnik Empire, and Mobotropolis becomes Robotropolis as millions and millions of its citizens are captured and transformed into Robian slaves.

-Charles and other veterans of the Great War start a domestic guerilla movement against Robotnik, liberating Mobians and striking at factories and other crucial facilities, becoming an irritant to the tyrant. Eventually getting into contact with the remnant of the Royal Fleet sent to deal with the battlebirds, a plan is hatched to re-take Robotropolis. Unfortunately, Robotnik anticipates the attack, destroying the fleet, killing the nascent resistance force, and finally roboticizing Charles in a twisted act of mercy.

-With his only major impediment defeated, Robotnik turns his attention back to Mobius. Nation after nation falls before Robotnik over the years, the inhabitants enslaved and Roboticized, and everywhere in the Robotnik Empire the environment is desecrated as factories dedicated to building more and more machines cover all the land. Even the United Federation falls before Robotnik, reduced to several cities fiercely and implacably defended by GUN, who resort to suppressed technologies and making robots of their own to fight the machine hordes.

-Things go swimmingly for Robotnik, and his victory is all but assured. Then one day, facilities in South Island begin to report unexpected delays in the development of the Scrap Brain Zone, an experimental automated super factor and roboticization facility, due to ‘outside interference’. Realizing that the nephew of Sir Charles, Sonic, is the culprit, Robotnik heads to South Island to personally oversee the destruction of the sneaky pest.

-And thus, do things begin.

Anyway, that’s the gist of things as they currently stand. As I said, I’m constantly changing and thinking and altering things, debating on what to include and what not to include, but this more or less is how things went down I the personal setting. The Abridged version anyway. Hope you enjoy it!

Nora: *holding a mug identic to ozpin's* this? Professor ozpin gave me one earlier.

Ruby: and what are you drinking?

Nora: *sips mug* coffee.

The whole cantina: *stop on their tracks with the sound of a car crash on the background*

Ruby: Y-YOU'RE DRINKING WHAT!?

Nora: coffee, didn't i just said that?

Ruby: a-and...are you okay?

Nora: yup.

Yang: feel like breaking everything at lightspeed maybe?

Nora: nope. Even if that would be really cool.

Blake: you're not feeling anything different or strange?

The whole cantina: *sighs in relief*

Ren: nora...where did you get the coffee?

Nora: with professor ozpin.

Ren: *sighs* it had to be. You know why you can't drink coffee.

Yang: why can't she drink coffee? I mean, i thought she was going to cause the apocalypse if she drank it but she looks fine.

Ren: she tends to mess with time and space when she drinks coffee.

Weiss: that doesn't make any sense, how exactly drinking coffee gives her this kind of ability?

Nora: dunno, ask dan.

Weiss: who?

Nora: dan, danurso, the guy writing this.

Danurso: hey, leave me out of this okay.

Nora: oh, hey dan, whats up?

Danurso: nora, what did i tell you about breaking the fourth wall?

Nora: it could tear the fabric of space and destroy both of our universes.

Yang: i have no idea.

Quarantine

Week of March 30th 2020; Day I’ve Lost Track

It appears that this whole issue with the coronavirus is a lot more serious than originally suspected. School is now online for the rest of this school year. Family talks on how we could stomach the apocalypse have taken place. And, what extroverts would consider the worse of all, even more social distancing.

However, being the optimistic that I can be, we at least got memes to laugh about.

But, this useless information is not what is needed to be shared. No, it is time for my coronavirus story. For once, I am the main character of the apocalyptic world. Now is my chance to rant about how disruptive this has been to my whole life in general.

It all started the last weekend of Spring Break….

I, the hero of this story, was camping in the desert. Which wasn’t so bad because the heat hadn’t shown up yet. The vacation was a lot of fun, and I could go off topic talking about this adventure, but I won’t.

Anyways, my Mom and Step-dad, Dan, couldn’t be there due to the monster they call Baby Alec. So where I got my intel from was my grandmother, known as Pom. She had told me that my mother had texted her. Pom said that school was cancelled. I was excited because I missed that one year, back in Sixth Grade, when I got TWO weeks off for Spring and Fall Break. (Of Course Winter too)

Also, I was excited because I thought it was going to be due to something interesting. But, no, I was sorely disappointed when Pom informed me that it was due the pathetic COVID-19.

That weekend, slowly my cousins’ schools had been cancelled too. I was just the first of many. This news had brought a new perspective of that Friday.

That Friday, before we left to go camping, we had stopped at a store to get cake. The store was overflowing with people seemingly buying everything they could. At the time, I only felt confusion and annonce, for why in any world would people try to buy out stores? Coronavirus. The answer is coronavirus.

A vast majority of people were panicking, I, however, was not. I am a healthy teen. My immune system is fine and I’m smart. I had researched a little info about the virus. It did not seem deadly to me.

Soon enough school was cancelled for even longer. I was now even more annoyed for this ruined everything. Here is a list of everything it ruined:

-my very minimal social life

-a chance to dance on stage

-the musical

-choir concert

And now I had to brace for the terrifying, online school.

Online school may not seem quite so terrifying, however, I have only ever gone to public school classes physically. Sometimes I’m not quite mentally there, But I can’t be blamed. I’m just a daydreamer, blame too many fantasy books.

Last Wednesday, I awoke late in the afternoon stressed. Within that evening I had cried two separate times. Why? Stress. Why? Because I had no clue how this Webex thing was going to work.

Later, I was less stressed, and now I am not stressed.

Still at that time I didn’t quite believe that this whole quarantine thing was a serious issue. Then I found out it was.

Friday, my parents had informed me of frightening news. Someone in our family had gotten the coronavirus. Even worse, someone me and my annoying brat of a brother, Lucas, had contact with two weeks ago. The prospect that Lucas and I could be infected and become sick, or give it to someone else was horrifying. Despite feeling indifferent towards Alex, we both agree on one thing, we do not want him to die.

Thankfully we’re all okay. But that family member isn’t. His name is Jon, and currently he is in a coma and some hospital. Luckily his vitals are stable.

Pause.

Time for something funny;

“His vitals are stable”

“Erm, doctor? They’re dead.”

“And maintaining that state quite well.”

Play.

Back to Jon. Apparently Daisy, Jon’s wife, had been showing symptoms and is most likely now in the hospital due to the coronavirus.

That cemented me not going over to any friends house at all. There goes my social life down the drain. Fortunately, I’m an introvert and I can live forever without human contact.

Essentially, this quarantine has destroyed everything. Especially for those who do not like or get along with their family. For example, Jenni. She has been really struggling with this. May the force be with her.

Time for some last minute positive points. I get a lot of free time to do things for me.

To end this heroic tale, I will tell you one fact that has come from this disaster. Lucas and I have decided to learn Morse Code. If the Quiet Place were to happen in real life, Lucas and I shall survive.

How did you get into fic writing? I've been so bored and I've been lacking some fic content that I've just been wondering if I should start making my own but like... It's really hard??? I'm just wondering what your process is like or whats more likely to get you to actually write How do you get into the mood of writing, basically? I have some snippets of writing, not so confident in them but like worthy enough to not be deleted or scrapped :/

Hey, anon.  Fic writing is so hard.  I got into writing fic many, many moons ago...  I started when I was twelve, and I’m twenty now so uh.  I’ve been in the thick of it for a while now.  I got into it writing fics with OCs and canon characters I loved in some cartoons, but I eventually started reading reader inserts and then normal fics.  All of that happened because of the particular time in my life I was entering fandom, and how fandom was shaping up then.  Everything is so different, now, but I’ll talk about general things I find useful that I’ve learned over the years... all this is super long, but I think this deserves a thorough answer.

So--process!  It depends a lot on the type of fic I’m writing (fic focused on a pairing, gen, reader insert, etc.), but I usually start with a basic concept.  This concept can be anything.  Often, I think figuring out your setting is a good jumping off point.

Is this an AU?  What kind of AU? (Star Wars? High school? Post-apocalypse?)

Does this take place in the canon story?  If so, when?  (If it was a batfam fic, is it when Dick or Bruce was Batman?  Or who is Robin?  Or is there a storyline this takes place right after?  Or before?  Big events like Death of the Family or Alfred’s death are the kinds of things that are fun to explore.)

But your concept could also be something more specific.  What would happen if the batfam played Clue?  Or what would happen if current 13 y/o Damian was swapped with just-arrived-at-the-manor 10 y/o Damian in some universe hopping shenanigans?  Maybe you can pick a favorite character and center the story on them.  If I’m writing about Jason, maybe it’s a fic about him going to the Gotham library for the first time since he got resurrected, and this place he visited all the time as a kid now feels unfamiliar and haunting.  Or even simpler, like Tim, moved out of the manor, tries to make brownies and is struggling and his elderly neighbor smells the burning and volunteers to help and it’s pure.

I think the thing that usually gets me in the ~writing mood~ is an idea so exciting I’m constantly thinking about.  For example, my Explosions And Other Saturday Morning Activities story?  I started thinking about what would happen if a Wayne Enterprises intern accidentally one of the bats secret identity, and then gets dragged into the messiness...  I didn’t have the plot beats down, but once I had the basic concept, I started thinking about plausible ways for that idea to play out.  Lately, I’ve been working on some original fiction (wack I know), and I’ve mostly been excited to write it because I love all these characters I’ve created and I enjoy thinking about scenarios to put them in.

But writing is hard!  Sometimes you might have a great idea that gets you excited, and then you’ll sit down to write and... your brain halts and it’s tough.  There’s no one way to get in the writing mood.  I often start outlining what I want to write rather than writing it out, or listen to music/make a playlist for a fic, or go read something totally different than come back.  I think once you start writing a lot, you’ll figure out the strategies that personally work best.

The most important thing, though, is that writing fic should be fun for you.  I won’t necessarily say that fic writing should be for yourself, though I generally think that’s a good principle for a lot of people.  Fic writing should fulfill some inner self-desire to be creative, but, also, one of the best things about making fic is sharing!!  It’s so exciting to post something and get feedback, like “I made this!!  And someone out in the world liked it!!  And told me!!  Sweet!!!!!”  That’s how it is for me, certainly.  But you shouldn’t feel like you have to write for your fellow fans/your audience.  It should always be a fun thing for you!

In terms of not feeling confident, I have sooooo many snippets of fics that have never left my google drive, and probably never will.  But I think the only way to get better is to put something out into the world--even though you know it’s not the best--and get feedback, figure out what works, what doesn’t, and then keep going, keep writing, keep rewriting.  Like with any art, I think writers are plagued with self-doubt.  “What if people don’t like it???  I don’t even like it!!”  But, with practice and time, you’ll grow, and maybe come to be love your stories unabashedly.

The fics I wrote literally eight years ago?  I look back at them with a bit of cringe, but mostly fondness.  They’re bad, but I was so excited to write them, and, as childish and strange as those fics read now, the passion I felt then is the same passion that drives me now.  My skill has improved a LOT, but my basic love of storytelling is the same.  And when I compare then and now, I’m really proud of how far I’ve come.
