On Guardian and Creativity (we could all use to be a little more handwavy sometimes)

I’ve been ruminating for some time on why I find the Guardian fandom one of the most creative ones I’ve been in during my long tenure on Tumblr and other fandom spaces. After much thought (and some encouragement on Discord *waves to everyone there*) I decided to write out my feelings in a little bit of an analytical essay meta. So, I will begin this reflection under the cut

But the TL;DR of it can be summarized in this meme:

So, Guardian. A fairly small fandom with just over 4,000 English-language fics in the general tag on AO3 (as of October 2022). Although the show aired in 2018, I only started watching earlier this year and quickly fell into a deep hyperfixation. I devoured every fic I could get my hands on like Ye Zun devours his enemies (I know, bad joke, sorry). I can wholeheartedly say I have encountered some of the most creative fics I have ever had the honor of reading--fics I return to over and over and over again and new ones that completely blow me away. So, just how does one small fandom manage to contain so much creativity? I would like to point to some reoccurring fandom AO3 tags to explain why.

1) Handwavy-ness 👋

Let’s be honest here, the ending of the Guardian drama is painful, agonizing, brutal, all of the above. If anyone walked away from it without tears falling down their face they’re a stronger person than me. So, what can one do when canon throws you into the pit of despair and kicks you while you’re down? Look for fix-it fics of course! And oh boy does Guardian have plenty. The generic Fix-It tag has 308 fics in it, and the Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies tag has 137, undoubtedly with some overlap. But this is not what I want to focus on; I would like to draw your attention to some of the tags I have collected below:

These are all just from the first 21 pages (aka 10%) when sorted by kudos, and some repeat multiple times within that. Sometimes you don’t want to have to do the work to fix the tangled mess of the ending, it is a lot of work! I have seen it done and it is insanely admirable, but it no doubt takes a lot of brain power that my two brain cells just cannot keep up with. So herein lies the Guardian fandom’s alternative--just handwave it! Nothing is stopping you from writing a post canon fic and just never explaining how we got here. All you need to know is that everyone is alive and happy. I have been in other fandoms where this technique would be questionable at best, but not here. There is such an overarching acceptance for this attitude of handwavy-ness and I think this is a large part of where the abundance of creativity comes from. But let’s also look at some more tags.

2) Dixing powers can do what they want

Although we can all laugh at how the show turned ghosts into mutant aliens with dark energy powers, I for one love this choice, the dark energy powers especially! They add a completely new avenue for creative freedom. The Dixingren powers in the show that come up during various cases are so random and contrived, there is no judgement whatsoever for making a character in a fic have the most random and contrived dark energy power either. We have a guy in canon whose power is literally “hardening the lower body” for goodness sake! On top of that, we have a main character who can learn any power he sees. ANY. Including the lower body hardening one if he so chooses to. The amount of options this gives fic writers? Unparalleled I tell you! You can give a Dixingren OC any power you want and make Shen Wei learn any power you want. Fic authors in this fandom have already taken full advantage of this! I have seen similar handwavy logic applied to the Hallows in fics too, because they are also the most random and contrived things in existence, but I wasn’t able to encounter any tags for those, so I will not get into it here as much.

In any case, already with just the freedom of handwavy-ness and Dixing powers, the Guardian fandom already has such a big playground to mess around in! It is absolutely no wonder why Guardian fandom creators are some of the most creative people out there. I am so happy to be a part of this amazing fandom and I hope it stays active for many more years to come. Current and future Guardian fandom friends, go forth and be as handwavy as you want! You have a permit to do so!

Hey I wanna thank everybody both for listening to me last night when I made my post but also asking for evidence of what was said on the BWW directly. It's a little hard to strum up all the screencaps and evidence of the nastiest shit said there without just reading through(what remains) of the forum threads yourself. I personally have never fangled with any kind of webarchive or wayback machine-thing and it shows. People have better stomachs for it than me- because even w there's a lot of people just shooting the shit or being right in accusations made abt Viv we're all making to this day, I'm really compounded by the attitude of the mods and owners of that site [BWW] as a whole. They're all admitted antiSJWs and one guy unicornically quoted Saargon of Akkad. They're the kind of people that I personally don't have the stomach to be around considering what it is they say, but obviously some people have stronger wills than me and can ignore them.

Point being, of everything I've been able to find: the specific forum posts and Viv and co's responses to said forum posts that majorly crossed the line are (I think) lost to time. So it's hard to 100% find them for you all.

I remember once in like 2020 or 2021 there was someone who had a whole Google Doc abt Viv and they showed her speaking about 'the pic' w Gooseworx chiming in- but I can't for the life of me find said document. That document, wherever it is, was where I saw the confirmation from Viv and Goose that, indeed, one BWW user did send her 'the pic' as well as other zp r34. Said doc was abt the op airing their greviences with Viv after they thought she made a mean caricature of his oc as a dead pelt in one of her drawings.

I know it happened and I'm 100% positive to have seen that user (he had a viv-styled sihlouette of a fox profile as his icon at the time; maybe he changed it if he hasn't finally been just run off the site) admitted to it on the BWW himself that he sent her that. I also have the strongest memory of that not only being in existence but then other users being rightfully disgusted and saying shit like "wtf now Viv's NEVER going to believe us now" I mean, if you want more dirt based on my anecdotal memory of the place as it was when it was 'thriving'.

I can tell you A LOT of that: anecdotes - stuff I know I remember but I have no concrete proof to show besides that. And I know that's frustrating, both to critics and fans. It's because of that that I just want to say I'm thankful and happy for the people in the critical tag to not only hear me out on that matter but also ask me up front what I 'know', for clarities sake. I just think it's good to be transparent and aware of the actual vile shit that's been done in Viv's life without excusing her behavior. I advocate what I've seen but only as spectator to the drama and not directly taking part in it.

I hope someday the people who were taking part/know the full deets can spill the beans on what I DON'T know happened when they're fully comfortable with it. That includes Viv herself, by the way.

Being aroace does kinda suck sometimes. Like, yeah, I don't have to worry about relationships and drama, but also the more my friends get into relationships the more I realize that I'm gonna get left behind. I feel like I'll always be the third wheel while all of my friends are off with their s/o

That might be why I get so hyperfixated on fandoms so much. Its like an escape, and how silly it is, something that can replace a relationship. While everyones at prom it'll be okay for me because I can still draw the skeleton and monkey guys. Those are things I have

And I'm not upset my friends are in relationships, not at all, but just. I wish romantic relationships weren't so.. valued above platonic ones

I can not tell you how badly I want to have a crush. I want someone who I'll get excited and blush over and just.. someone that has more chances to not find someone else and just. Leave.

Maybe I'm too clingy, maybe I get hurt too easily, but you gotta see this from my point of view. Imagine that all of your friends are in relationships. And you wanna be in one too. But you can't fall in love. You don't get that. Youre everyone's permanent third wheel.

Imagine it's valentines day and while watching everyone kiss and be together you get to sit and realize just how alone you truly are. And how it seems you'll always be.

"Everybody's falling in love and I'm falling behind" Laufey managed to catch so many of my jumbled and mixed feelings in a single line of a song, and it makes me.. happy to know that at least im not alone.

And. It goes back around to feeling mad at myself for being upset. And grahhhhh

Maybe this is just because those stupid kids were invalidating me SO HARD. I told them. My friends, that I'm aro/ace. I explained it. I told them what it was, how it feels, how much it can hurt, yet they keep telling me how it's a choice. How I'm just lesbian and refuse to come out.?? And?? Gruh

And also could be because both of my brothers invited their boyfriends over. And it was fun!! So much fun!! We were having a jolly ol time!! And then they did some little.. like. Smash bros but one s/o had the left side of the controller the other had the right side. And it was fun!! It was funny!! Until!! I realized I'm never gonna get that!! That person I can just turn to and hug because we won that round!! Im not gonna get to have that rush of joy that I can so openly and happily share with them!! I'm stuck like this! Alone!

And it's not their fault because they were just wanting to have fun together!! As couples!! But it still kinda hurt realizing I was just the third wheel!! Like always!! And!! Uh

I am starting to wonder if I don’t like happy shows/books with sad/dark undertones. And I don’t like that the happy/funny/cozy parts try to draw me in. I really need to just read the vibes of the thing before it starts and drop it. I need to not be fooled by the cuteness. I stopped watching both Buddy Daddies and Lycoris Recoil because my anxiety ramps up every time I think about watching them because of the dark undertones. I have been really hesitant to start Delicious in Dungeon because of the same feelings (and it keeps trying to drag me in with cuteness and some of the fun atmosphere, but I know of the darkness that lurks underneath!). Kotaro Lives Alone was giving similar vibes and I also dropped it. And now we might have a new one in Train to the End of the World. You can’t give me cute looking characters with apparent comedy when the whole show is giving off dark and messed up vibes.

I need to stay away from shows like these. As much as I have some fun with them. I think in the end they hurt me just a bit too much. Like. Some light drama in my cute and fun shows is fine. Or cute and fun scenes in my drama shows to cut the tension is good. But this setup is usually a bit too much for me. Maybe I am too sensitive. Maybe I just need to save a select few of these for the exact right mood they are for. But for now I think I need to proceed with caution with these kinds of shows.

(Also I don’t know how I feel about shows that promise some more darkness and then put on kid gloves and go “everybody lives” because like I know it would bother me if it went too dark but it doesn’t feel right to just keep going “just kidding, we aren’t going to murder anyone today”. But then I found a book that promised darkness when I wanted some darkness and then it delivered and then some. And it kind of upset me but it is what I wanted. I feel so conflicted.)

“i really have to study, eddie,” you giggled as your boyfriend left insistent kisses on your cheek. “i can’t.”

“you seriously can’t take some time off to pay attention to me?” he gasped, theatrically putting a hand over his chest.

“i always give you attention.” you said, playing with the rings on his fingers. “and no, i can’t. it’s an important test. you’d know that, if you bothered to study.”

“how about,” he started, giving you a devious smile. “you come over, and-” you rolled your eyes, and he raised his hands defensively, raising his voice. “and i’ll be good and quiet so you can study, hm?”

you narrowed your eyes. “you? quiet? i don’t buy it.”

“i promise. i won’t bother you. that way, you can study all you want, and i get to look at you while you do it. everybody wins.”

the bell rang, indicating that the break was over. eddie jumped off the top of your car, putting his hands in the pockets of his jacket.

“what do you say?”

he was smiling, because he already knew you’d never say no to him.

“alright.” you said, defeated. “but you better keep your promise.”

“always.” he leaned in and left a quick peck on your lips. “enjoy your free period, while the rest of us commoners have class. wish me luck. i’ll need it.”

“good luck.” you said entertainingly as eddie skipped off.

you resumed doodling in your sketchbook, smiling to yourself as you finished the drawing for eddie’s birthday. it was a drawing of him playing the guitar, and maybe it was because it was him, but you thought it was the best thing you had ever made.

some time passed, and you couldn’t shake off the feeling that somebody was watching you. you looked around, until you found the pair of eyes that were staring at you from across the parking lot.

you held your gaze until jonathan realized you had caught him staring. he startled and clumsily walked away, leaving you alone and confused.

you showed up to pick up eddie and dustin from hellfire. like every week, you'd probably go out to eat after, or simply hang out at yours and dustin's house.

this time, though, you were surprised to see you weren’t alone. jonathan was there too, leaning against his car. after contemplating (and discarding) the idea of hiding in your car until eddie and dustin showed up, you hesitantly walked up to him.

“hi.”

he quickly turned around, his eyes wide. “oh, hi.”

you looked at him, at the school, and then back at him, not sure how to ask the question you wanted to ask without sounding rude.

“i’m here to pick up will.”

“oh,” you nodded your head, still unconvinced. “doesn’t your mom usually pick him up?”

“yeah, she does," he cleared his throat. “she had a late shift today.”

“right.”

silence filled the space between the two of you, surrounding you like the night breeze. you discreetly glanced at your watch. they should have finished by now.

“so,” jonathan spoke. “how are you?”

“i’m fine. trying to survive exams, you know? but good.” you gazed at him, noticing the way he was hiding his hands in his pockets, his gaze fixed on the ground. he clearly felt just as nervous and awkward as you. “what about you?”

“yeah, me too.”

“how’s your mom?”

“she’s great. she’s been… happier.”

“hopper looks happy too.” you smiled, thinking about the town’s newest couple. you had always hoped they’d get together someday.

if you were being honest, you wished you had been around when it happened. it saddened you not to be as close to joyce as you had once been.

“will looks happy too,” you added, and jonathan looked at you, a small smile growing on his lips. “i always see him around, you know.”

because i’m dating eddie, seemed to wordlessly hang in the air.

“yeah, he talks about you a lot.” he chuckled, and you perked up.

“he does?”

jonathan nodded his head. “i think he misses you.”

your stomach dropped, the smile slowly disappearing from your face.

“i miss him too.” you said quietly. “i’ll ask him if he wants to hang out at the arcade sometime.”

“he’d love that.”

you glanced at your watch again. it wasn’t unusual for them to take bit more time than expected, and you normally didn’t mind, but tonight was different. tonight, time moved slow.

you gazed at the road, trying to find anything to look at that wasn’t jonathan. it was the first time you two were having a conversation ever since you had broken up. you didn't know how to talk to him anymore.

“how’s eddie?”

the question took you aback. you had never heard jonathan say eddie’s name before. it was almost unsettling, hearing your present's name in your past's mouth.

“he’s good.”

you prayed and prayed to whatever god would listen to remove you from this situation. you didn’t want him to ask about your current relationship, so you did the first thing you could think of.

“how’s nancy?”

now that was a name you had uttered a million times. a name you had pronounced with affection, a name you had uttered in laughter, a name you had yelled, a name you had cried over. and the mere pronunciation of it managed to make the air between the two of you even heavier.

“you don’t have to ask, you know.” jonathan whispered. you weren’t looking at him, and he wasn’t looking at you.

“i want to.”

he sighed. “she’s fine. she’s editor of the paper.”

“i heard.”

you knew perfectly well that you could just leave it at that, the same way he hadn’t asked anything else about eddie. you had done your part, you had been cordial.

but a small part of you, the part of you that may purposefully look for pain, wanted to hear about the relationship between your ex boyfriend and the girl that used to be your best friend.

“and you two? you’re okay?”

jonathan hesitated, distractedly playing with his feet.

“i don’t know.”

“what’s wrong?”

“i think…” he took a breath. “i think she wants to get back together with steve.”

you exhaled, as if someone had punched you in the stomach.

“shit.”

“yeah.”

“but,” you stammered, shaking your head. “did she tell you that?”

his eyes were tired and defeated as they looked into yours. “she doesn’t need to.”

you weren't sure what to say, let alone what to feel. when everything went down, you would've moved mountains to see nancy and jonathan apart. but you had eventually accepted it, and even gotten used to it to the point where you couldn't imagine it any other way. you couldn't believe they might actually break up.

you couldn't imagine jonathan being alone.

“i’m sorry.” you said quietly.

“it’s okay.” he shrugged. “they’re highschool romances. they’re not supposed to last.”

the bitterness in his tone and words suggested that he was not only talking about him and nancy, but about you two as well. and maybe, about you and eddie.

“can i ask you something?”

you waited a moment, giving fate one last chance. a chance for eddie to burst through the doors so you could get the hell out of there and avoid whatever situation was about to go down. but everything stayed still.

“sure.”

“do you… think about me?” he paused. “about us?”

“why are you asking me that, jonathan?”

“i don’t know.” he confessed. “i just… i think about you. a lot. and sometimes i feel that, maybe, you think about me too.”

“i think about a lot of things.” you looked away. “that doesn’t make them important.”

“you still use it.”

“hm?”

“the sketchbook.” he finished. “the one i made for you.”

“it was a gift, jonathan. what was i supposed to do? throw it away?”

“it’s full of pictures of us.” he stared at you. “did you throw those away?”

you scoffed. “what’s this? you haven’t talked to me in ages and now you’re suddenly asking all sorts of questions.”

“you haven’t made an effort to reach out, either.”

you couldn’t believe what you were hearing. you crossed your arms over your chest, guarding yourself.

“you chose her, jonathan.” you stated, your voice sharp and steady. “you chose her.”

“and how do i know if i made the right choice?”

your heart skipped a beat, pounding loudly against your ears. you couldn't remember the amount of nights you had gone to bed going over what you would say to jonathan if you ever got the chance.

you used to imagine yourself running into his arms, taking him back without a second thought. but that was a long time ago now.

“remember what you told me when you broke up with me? when you broke up with me because you were in love with our best friend, the one we grew up with?” you snapped, taking a step closer to him.

you had thought you were over all of this, but standing in front of jonathan under the pale streetlights, you realized there had always been some lingering ache waiting to burst through your chest.

“you told me you wanted me to be happy. that i deserved someone who would love me the way i deserved.”

jonathan looked down, and you wanted to scream at him to look at you. he had done this. he had broken the two of you, and the bond you had once shared. being brave enough to look you in the eye was the least he could do.

“i’m with eddie now.” you tried your best not to let your voice break. “you have no idea how hard it was. but i’m happy. i’m very happy. and he loves me, alright? he loves me. so please, jonathan,” you breathed in as he finally looked at you. “don’t ask me what would have happened if things had been different. because they’re not.”

now that he had met your gaze, you noticed his eyes were filled with tears. you didn’t regret what you had said. but you suddenly wondered if you had been too harsh on the boy that had taught you what love is.

you knew, or used to know, his deepest fears and his most wishful desires. you used to protect one another, and now all you seemed to do was hurt each other.

before you could say anything else, the school doors burst open and the kids excitedly ran out, followed by eddie. they were celebrating the end of a successful campaign, but all you could feel was a hollow emptiness in your chest.

will lit up as soon as he caught sight of his brother, and jonathan quickly wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his jacket.

“hi, bud.”

after the kids said their goodbyes, dustin and eddie talked enthusiastically as they walked up to you, recounting their favorite moments of the evening.

“hi, buttface.” dustin greeted you, and you ruffled his hair in response.

eddie playfully wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you in for a kiss. you laughed as he lifted you off the ground, spinning you around before setting you down again.

“hi, pretty boy.”

it was incredible, how eddie managed to cheer you up in seconds, just by being himself. you once believed you would never love again, but knowing eddie made you realize that having loved before was enough proof that you could do it again.

but when you turned around, you were still haunted by the past. eddie was saying something you weren’t paying attention to, staring into jonathan’s hurt eyes instead. eventually, eddie noticed you weren’t listening to him, and followed your gaze.

you didn’t see it, but his jaw tightened and he lifted his chin, staring at jonathan.

“byers.” he stated. “we don’t usually see you around here.”

jonathan mumbled something about picking up will, giving the same explanation of his mom working late. eddie nodded his head, and though he was tense, he never lost his composure.

“you can join us sometime, if you want.”

“oh, no. i don’t play.” he shook his head.

“shame.” eddie said simply. “well, goodnight.”

eddie wrapped an arm around your shoulders and turned back, walking towards your car. you listened to his and dustin's discussion about where to eat, but you could only think about jonathan’s eyes boring into your back.

when you got into your car, you cast jonathan a last glance. as expected, he was already staring at you. he looked as if there was something he wanted to say. and you looked as if you didn't want him to say it. so he got into his car and drove off, disappearing down the road.

you let out a sigh, gripping the wheel. eddie looked at you from the passenger’s seat.

“you okay?” he asked softly. you nodded your head, turning on the engine. eddie leaned in and placed a kiss on your cheek. “you pick where you want to eat, okay?”

“what?!” dustin exclaimed from the backseat. “no! she always chooses denny's!”

eddie ignored him, all his attention put on you. you gave him a small smile and placed a short peck on his lips.

“i love you.”

he smiled, brightening up at your words. he put a hand on your thigh and wiggled it from side to side.

“only because i let you torture us with denny and his nasty burgers?”

you rolled your eyes and turned on the radio.

“his burgers are the best.”

“they're disgusting.” dustin stated.

all your favorite songs filled the car, and while you sang loudly with dustin and eddie played air guitar, you realized you didn’t need to hide from the past. it would always be a part of you, a part of your story. but you wouldn’t let it interfere with your present.

There are no favorite deaths for Sims. I would like everyone to live forever, healthy and happy. That's why it's so hard for me when the elders in the acting out family have to leave it. I'm always so sorry. Apparently that's why I mostly play mystical characters that can live forever.

Favorite EA hair? Hmmm.... Two ponytails (it's good that now there is a mod that replaces them by default)

Favorite life stage? Any age to play. Each is beautiful in its own way.

Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? I love all the stages! 🛠️ But sometimes construction is very tiring 😵

How has your “Sims style” changed throughout your years of playing? Radically. More thoughtful approach to the process. Sometimes I even create entire cities from scratch for history.

Who’s your favorite CC creator? I love everybody! And those who are just starting and those who have been doing this for a long time! You are beautiful! Do not listen to the negative (there is always some bad in any pool), do what you like and share with us! And we will always appreciate!

1. Are you named after anyone?

Pretty sure my dad wanted to name me after his mother aka my grandma but my sisters thought it was too old and traditional so they decided on one they thought sounded nice. Apparently a classmates of my oldest sister had my name. My grandma's name is still my second one tho.

2. When was the last time you cried?

About a week or so ago. In public.

3. Do you have kids?

Fuck no. I have nieces. Isn't that enough? Honestly I can't see myself as a mother any time soon.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Ya, and often I am very mean.

5. What sports do you play/have you played?

Tennis! I used to play quite regularly as a kid but just now started again and I love it so much. Other than that: I do yoga and ride my bike a lot. And obviously walking. I'm European so it counts.

6. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Their voice. Also their eyes. And mostly likely their hands.

7. What’s your eye color?

Brown.

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings. As much as I love movies that emotionally wreck me nothing can top a feel-good movie with a happy ending. (Some drama and angst is always allowed tho.)

9. Any special talents?

I'm pretty good at languages, I would say. And I like drawing (people have told me I am creative?) And I have the special talent of completely submitting myself to other people and getting very emotionally attached.

10. Where were you born?

In the Austrian alps. At 4:00 a.m.

11. What are your hobbies?

Is it weird to say I like to clean? Lately it has calmed me down a lot lol. No but I like going to galleries, museums, concerts, bars, the cinema, strolling through parks and having dinner in nice restaurants. Basically everything that gets me out of the house and involves friends or loved ones. I also love playing with dogs. Is that a hobby?

12. Do you have pets?

Nope, I used to have rabbits and a turtle back in the days. My sister recently got a dog though. It's my favorite niece.

around 163cm? haven't checked in a while. (people tell me I have "tall-girl-energy" though.

English, arts, Spanish and sports lol

15. Dream Job?

I hate this question. I don't know. But considering a dream job can be anything: I would like to own a very cool restaurant. One that serves experimental, good quality food without being pretentious and snobby. In combination with fantastic drinks.

The fact that the « drama » started because of ONE anon not being happy that I had paid readings open BEFORE my readings on BTS and thought we/I were/was manipulating you all to buy from me. Their brain is broken because they are so fast to accuse with no prooves but when we ask them to show them I hear crickets.

I also don’t know if they are the same anon that went mad that I refused to answer one specific question (which I answered after as the other anon asked like a normal person without looking like they want to know everyone’s thoughts who know of Jungkook and his spouse). I also don’t know if they are the same anon who told me « well somebody asked you about Namjoon and you still passed » whereas I did answered but without going into details.

Maybe they can’t read english (which is okay if it is not their first language) but they really should learn how to read it all and linked the words together. (If they are still here looking on my blog I hope they are reading this and ALL because at that point they would just play dumb).

Maybe there is only one anon that went mad because I passed some questions and those people never reacted badly. Maybe they opted for asking other questions or just left my blog. Maybe I passed the questions of the same anon and they got frustrated. I do not owe them anything lol, they are the one begging for their/his spouse’s information. I owe them respect as much as they owe me respect but if they are uncapable of doing so then - please leave.

Comic Beginning

I wanna play around with the opening a bit more- I think rather than it just being an "odd day unlike any other", I was debating on adding a funeral as well. Tbh I got the idea from a dnd dms idea thing- so I wanna try working further with that concept.

The difficult part as of right now is figuring out who died and why? Who's all at the funeral? What do they say and how do these things fit into the story?

Although I doubt I'll find any or all of those answers- let alone actually use any of it for the finished product. However I've been watching a lot of Hawaii 50 along with spooky stuff with Halloween coming to an end. (happy sahiem everyone!<3)

My story takes place in a very small mountain/forest kind of town, with a population probably no more than 20-30 people living there when it's not summer time- so because of that, I wonder if the funeral should be for the old major of the town?

Honestly that could help out a lot of parts with the story. It'd be an easy way to introduce the whole town, explain what kind of major he was and what kind of town they're living in, and I'm pretty sure a whole small town like that is in morning for their major would be.. pretty different so it still fits with my original opening.

Possibly the old major had some enemies within the town? They could be at the funeral or could be the whole reason the old major died in the first place. Regardless- I feel like the new replacement major would be there immediately. Probably play up a lot of their own drama with it in hopes of reaching out to the community and even win along the way. I would say that the new major killed the old one so that he could move into office faster but I don't think I wanna go with that because I've been seeing that a lot within my tv shows n I'd like to do something a lil more interesting for my personal story.

The Old Major = a absolutely old fart who didn't really have an idea of what was going on but he was helpful to strangers and neighbors when he could, a very old fashioned man, stubborn and sometimes mistaken as rude or pure brain dead. it's a mixed bag through out the town on if he's liked, hated, loved or tolerated. regardless he kept the small town running and moving forward as the major for over 40 years. not everybody agreed with him but most people respected him. kids liked to pick on him of course.

The New Major = at the funeral, his dramatic theater acts made him quite suspicious with the town people- not to mention that he's from the city and doesn't know a whole lot of people or much of anything for that matter. he's just a small guy in a suit fresh out of collage from New York, based off of his clean look- he seems gay. he is gay. very gay. however the new major eventually proves himself to the town because he becomes an active member of the community, eventually got to know everybody and began making big improvements on the town as it gets repaired, refurbished, cleaned and slightly expanded. when spooky things start to happen later on within the story, he ends up being very helpful with the magic, spooky, and mysterious goings on. he just wants to be a good major and be there for the people he leads with a rainbow streak.

That's all I really have for right now so I suppose I'll expand onto this more later but again- I'm not sure about any of this really lol

However I feel like I'm making a lot of progress with it and hopefully this'll end up being a comic! This def by far he longest I've worked on a writing/drawing/comic book type of project! Granted I don't think anybody actually reads/looks at my posts but just posting the story stuff and sharing into the void really helps me stay on track with this and reminds me to work on it more rather than a google doc and I'm just really proud of myself <3

Question For CarmenRider: Have We Entered "The Long Run" Yet?

In her call with The Senate, LioConvoy's discord server--CarmenRider told The Senate that she would win in the long run.

Of course, this comment is made fun of by the rest of the call, with Jase specifically wondering what it is she's actually going to win. Carmen then says that her comment was metaphorical--meaning she didn't literally plan on winning, I think--and the call moves on.

This is one part I love revisiting as the situation goes on. Make no mistake, it was obvious bullshit at the time--even those on Carmen's side had to have known that. The same day Carmen uploaded this, she also uploaded an (currently unlisted) apology video:

I should also note that this video has multiple lies in this, for example, Carmen says the following regarding Bella:

Who has accused you of grooming? The only person I can think of that made such an accusation was Lovely Lina, and it was LioConvoy that corrected them.

What people actually said was that you handled the Bella situation highly irresponsibly. I won't go into that here since there's enough for that to be its own post and even then I'm not the best informed about it, but this is utter nonsense. For that matter, it's not Bella who got you called a pedophile--although I will admit it certainly didn't help matters--it was your constant defense of lolicon that did that.

Meanwhile, Class Edge Lord--who was once Carmen's most loyal fan--stopped talking to Carmen two months ago, and hasn't shown any signs of going back to her.

CallMeNil, somebody who used to be a good friend of Carmen's, has also expressed that she now hates Carmen because of how she leaked personal information about Neko Koda (might I remind you all that Nil was somebody who Carmen thought was on her side and thanked in her apology video):

Oh yeah, I can't believe I forgot about the whole "CarmenRider implied both LioConvoy and everybody against lolicon is a pedophile" part. You see, it started with this video:

In it, Carmen plays a long series of clips of various critics of Lolicon being arrested for pedophilia and other offenses. This is put together with her calling LioConvoy an alleged pedophile (which is a statement that is both inflammatory and meaningless) over various things I'm not getting into.

To put it simply, even when Septy does wrong, it's not met with people believing Carmen is in the right--it's met with people thinking this entire thing is really stupid. However, regardless of everything Septy did, Septy never drove somebody to suicide, and that makes them a better person than CarmenRider.

So, is this the point where Carmen declares victory? Because, to be blunt, it seems like she's still losing the war.

the theater kid who everybody somehow knows, even without sharing a class or club with him; he’s strangely capable of drawing everyone’s attention, even to the point of his own detriment, and probably knows the name of almost everyone in school due to the random and weird situations he’s gotten himself into

also the kid that is a senior but everyone thinks is a freshman, maybe a sophmore, because he looks so young

plays roles in theater / drama without any sense of gender restraint; can perfectly nail a feminine, androgynous, or even masculine character

has very average grades except in the classes he actually cares about, which are all generally pretty artsy (music, drama, what you’d generally expect)

fails all his math classes, and fails them hard - it’s reached a point where he has to make up a few credits to be able to graduate, but that’s okay, he’s not good at everything, and he’s happy with that

probably got tutored by several different people but none of them can really get him to develop a good work ethic

the kid that probably circles ‘c’ on all the answers for a test he doesn’t understand and somehow manages to get a passing grade (but not an exceptional one)

has a very low attention span which really doesn’t help his studying or homework skills

he doesn’t drive at all because he’s bad at it and it gives him awful anxiety, even though he’s old enough to drive and could very well work towards getting a license (usually he leeches off his friends for a ride, haha)

you probably meet him through some weird circumstance like when he brings his pet lizard, dvalin, to school (against the rules), or after he tries to do the, this bitch empty! yeet! soda can thing and then bonking you on the head with it, or alternatively, and this is where im going to lean into: he’s pretty much had a crush on you since the moment he saw you in his class

and venti is simultaneously going to be heavily pining for you while also spontaneously walking up to you and making any excuse he can to interact with you because he wants to be your friend (and maybe, after that, something more)

he’ll try and join one of your clubs, like he might come up to you and be like, “haha, wait, aren’t you in that chess club? i love chess!” he does not love chess. he loses to it all the time against zhongli. he hates it. (but he’ll grin his teeth and join it because he wants to be with you)

and it sort of escalates from that point, and if you were ever interested in theater, he’s an instant ticket in (as long as he thinks your vouchable, he wouldn’t lie)

extremely touchy and affectionate even as just a friend; he’s the type of person you have a crush on and it only just becomes infuriatingly more evident because he’ll lay his head down against your shoulder, or randomly come and sit on your lap (very casually), or give you those ‘friendly’ kisses on the forehead

and he definitely makes excuses to touch you, like saying, “oh, you got a dandelion seed in your hair!” while at lunch together, and he plucks it out between his fingers with a big smile, or he’ll do things like brushing his hand up against yours

the pining is awful and everyone is painfully aware of your crushes on each other, it’s horrendous

but at one point things boil over, maybe someone gets jealous or theres a small argument, and then venti (or perhaps you) stamps his feet down with a big frown and huffs, “i like you!”

once you two start officially dating, those frequent touches from before are basically unhinged in a way you could never predict

he becomes very clingy, even more than usual, to the point he’s pretty much hanging off of you, holding onto your arm, leaning into you; he’s full-blown pda, and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks

he really loves attention, he thrives off of any of your affectionate gestures, touches, or affirmations

goes overboard on valentines day, he gives you an excessive amount of gifts, ranging from flowers to candies to plushies, and he definitely, definitely, gives you a love letter that he wrote himself with a sheepish, shy smile

also the type to run around giving all his friends and especially you, some of those cute valentines day cards, except he gives way too much candy, to the point his friends are kinda worried about him haha

is not afraid to make out with you at any given moment or time, to the point that your friends will groan and you’ll probably be told off by a hall monitor or teacher, haha

he loves to hold your hand when walking to classes you share together, and on the ones you don’t share, he’ll eagerly walk you to yours, even if he ends up late for his own

study/tutoring dates but he keeps stealing kisses instead of concentrating, until next thing you know, you’ve just been making out for the entire time

doesn’t care one way or the other about school events unless it’s related to theater, music, or his friends, but he definitely wouldn’t mind going to homecoming or prom with you if that’s something you really wanted

but just be ready for him to drag you to every one of his performances or to be his date as he goes and supports one of his buddies (and he’ll spoil you the entire time with treats and kisses)

you guys end up being very well-known in the school, in a very infamous way, just because of venti’s excessive pda and desire to constantly talk about you

kazuha

the quiet kid that likes the seats by the window because then he can look outside

he doesn’t really cause much fuss in school, he’s extremely polite and good-natured, and generally well-loved and admired by all of the teachers and staff members, who inevitably end up knowing him because of his helpful, kind nature

he doesn’t really go out of his way to socialize with anyone, but in classes, you’ll always see him calmly raising his hand, and whenever he’s called on by teachers, he always knows the answers, even if it doesn’t seem like he’s paying attention

has very beautiful, neat notes that are honestly enviable

his grades, however, aren’t very perfect, especially his test scores; he’s admonished by his parents for it, but he doesn’t see what’s so wrong with just having b’s and low a’s, with test scores that are only slightly above average

not super interested in college in general, he instead is making plans to just wander and travel the world after he graduates, since he doesn’t have any particular dreams or ambitions

gravitates largely to his friend group, which consist of tomo, gorou, thoma, ayato, and miss ayata, with the occasional appearance of yoimiya; obviously, tomo is his best friend, but he hangs out with gorou quite a lot, and these two are basically the bread and butter of his social interactions

the type who would probably have a crush on you from afar but not really say or do anything about it, so his friends have to tease him about it until he gets the courage to eventually strike up a conversation

and that opportunity comes with time, he’s a little anxious about it

but then he finally comes around, and next thing you know, in the english class you share with him, he walks up to you and airily asks if he could work with you on the assignment, and it all goes from there

ends up being your friend after consistent encounters; you asking him for help with classes, him seeking you out for companionship, and even you two end up beginning to each lunch together

but the funny thing is his friends are going to butt in and try to encourage you two to hang out more and more, especially tomo, but also gorou

they start befriending you as well, in a very sincere but amicable way, eagerly learning more about you and then basically dragging you into their friend group so you can spend more time with kazuha

because kazuha has a hard time initating a lot of things on his own

it also is probably them that ends up noticing when you start reciprocating kazuha’s feelings, and then it’s game over, they’re eagerly encouraging you to confess

and next thing you know, one blushing love confession between both you and kazuha later, you’re dating

you’ll find love notes and affectionate haikus tucked into all of the perfect places, waiting for you to find them—whether it be your locker, or in the page of a textbook you were studying with kazuha, or even just as a text on your phone

he also sometimes leaves small gifts; tiny trinkets, but all meaningful

sometimes it’s a lucky charm that is meant to bring you fortune, other times it’s your favorite flower that he used his allowance to buy from a florist

doesn’t really like social events, but if you wanted to go to school celebrations like prom or homecoming, chances are you’re in luck, because his friends might drag him into doing it anyway

he also doesn’t really like nor care for study dates; he’d prefer to just hang out with you

that said, he’d love to come over to your house or have you come over to his and meet his parents, even if they’re a little overbearing

he also would go on boba dates or weekend hangouts with you

on valentine’s day, he writes you a very meaningful love poem that he recites to you softly when you two are alone and in a very scenic place

you guys as a couple aren’t very well known by anyone except your friend group, who will tease you about it but in a very friendly, happy way, because they’re obviously very excited and pleased to see you two together

he knows how to drive, and he’s a very safe and good driver, he has a relatively nice car, but nothing fancy or special (the inside is always a bit cluttered and messy, though)

he also has a part-time job he does off-and-on, nothing super big, but just enough that it gives him experience and some cash to spend, since he is, unfortunately, pretty independent due to circumstances

his grades aren’t necessarily bad, but they’re not exactly the best; he gets relatively average grades that do spike up into more positive territory, but he’s failed a few classes, too

he’s good at studying, but it’s hard to find the motivation to care about the education system, because he doesn’t feel very rewarded for it

he skips a lot of classes though, he probably perfectly calculates how many credits he needs and what absences he can spare, and then goes and fucks off with rosaria, lisa, and venti (whenever venti decides to show up, that is)

him and his friends radiates that bisexual, they/them friend group energy, and it’s awesome

he’s definitely a senior, so he’s one of the more older kids at the school

he’s also friends with who you’d expect, and he’s surprisingly on school council despite his questionable work ethic; he’s sort of an assistant to jean, who is school council president, and he works with lisa and albedo there, too

despite skipping classes and being pretty indifferent about his own grades, he is extremely encouraging and supportive to all of the younger students he ends up meeting and helping

like, bennett and amber, for example, are basically these freshmans or sophmores that he’s constantly looking out for, and he always is their cheerleader, strongly motivating them to get really good grades, go to their classes, and carve a future for themselves; he will give them rides to school if they need it, but they don’t ever take him up on his offer unless it’s an emergency

fucks around and acts like a dick when he’s with his fellow seniors and especially his friends, he probably annoys albedo and childe a lot, but for the most part, whenever he sees a new student or if they’re in the first or second year classes, he’s always a nice and friendly face for them, he wouldn’t hesitate to help them out

he wouldn’t call himself ambitious, but he’ll probably do something with law enforcement or general governing management after he graduates, even with his very odd school record

even if it doesn’t look like it, he does kinda want the world to be a little better, and he does want to create change in what ways he can

meeting him isn’t really that hard, he tends to gravitate people into his presence, and he’s always willing to help those he sees worthy of being helped

so chances are you probably just bump into him or he randomly gives you an act of kindness with a shrug of his shoulders and a casual smile

i think the best way you’d probably meet him is by also being a senior, and then one day in class, the teacher is out of the room, and everyone is messing around and being goofy

and next thing you know, kaeya is randomly seating himself next to you, one of his skipping-class-friends at his side, and asking you a very random question, like, “hey, do you think our teacher looks like a drug dealer?” and it just goes through an entire conversation about it, all with him being very inclusive and relatively friendly, and after that, he just thinks you’re cool and will easily approach you and be your friend

he’s the type of person that wants to know what you want to do after high school, because he likes to encourage the people he cares about

although he doesn’t mind if you wanna skip with him, he kinda has a small frown and always seems a little reluctant, asking you if you’re sure you want to, since school is important, just not for him, and you don’t need to miss out just to hang out with him

for the most part, encourages you in a similar way he encourages amber and bennett, but if you have your own plans, then he’s cool with that, and will work with it

probably ends up confessing his feelings to you after weeks and weeks of gross, quiet pining

he’s pretty hidden about it, but he always finds excuses to touch you, like playing with your hair while joking or teasing, or gripping your shoulder when he laughs really hard, or leaning conspiratorially close to your side to whisper in your ear

and rosaria does that thing where she takes a drag of her cigarette and calls him out for it when its just him and his friends, and she’s like, “dude, you’ve got it bad. it’s gross.”

at some point, he’s just going to catch you after classes and say, “hey, you got a moment? i want to talk with you, it’s pretty important.”

and once you two find a nice place to be alone, he’ll confess; and it’s very sweet, actually

once you two start dating, he sort of tries to figure out how affectionate he can be around you

he’s hesitant when he reaches for your hand while sitting next to you in class, but then you loop his fingers with yours, and he relaxes; after that, he starts holding your hand more often

he’ll try to gauge how loving he can be; would you be okay with it if he hugged you? picked you up and spinned you around while laughing when you’re at lunch together? if he wrapped an arm over your shoulders or put his jacket over your body to keep you warm?

but once he figures it out, then he’s going all in, knowing the boundaries, but eager for the attention

because truth be told, he’s lonely, and it’s nice to have someone who really cares about him, especially like this, especially someone who cares about him as much as he cares about them, and archons, you’re perfect

generally a super sweet boyfriend

he’ll pick you up and take you to school or back home, if you wanted, but he’d do that even as just friends, honestly

really bad at homework and most school subjects, but if you’re struggling with a problem for your assignment, he will go out of his way to look it up and completely understand the subject, specifically so he can help you get your work done

subtly figures out if you want to go to homecoming or prom, and then based on whether you want to or not, he’ll take you, or he’ll just coop up with you at home

definitely goes on a lot of dates with you afterschool, but he’ll make any excuse to just hang out while at your house or you at his

surprisingly clingy, he follows you around like a puppy, even if he keeps the facade of cool indifference (as i said: lonely)

on valentine’s day, expect a bouquet of your favorite flowers that is perhaps the largest you’ve ever seen, with a goofy little teddy bear and a valentine’s day card that he very affectionately wrote sappy things on

definitely takes you on a date afterschool on valentine’s day, anywhere you want, his treat

lets you stay over at his apartment whenever you want, sleepovers galore (in fact, please do, he really needs company; for the second and millionth time: lonely.)

extremely adoring, you guys are the type of couple that gets married after being highschool sweethearts, and it’s super cute

Extracurricular, An Analysis

Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri

You know the story. You’ve heard it before, right?

Boy meets girl.

Girl finds out that boy is running a side protection business for prostitutes.

Girl decides to blackmail boy into letting her join his business.

Classic high school criminal shenanigans ensue leading them into more dangerous situations where they are forced to make desperate decisions to stay alive.

Oh, and they fall in love along the way.

Oh? You haven’t heard this one before? Then let me introduce you to this delightful kdrama called Extracurricular.

I watched this one while waiting for the newest Hometown Cha Cha Cha episodes to drop and ended up binging the whole series in two days. There are many remarkable parts of this series: it’s a crime drama, first and foremost, that showcases high school teenagers caught in a cycle of violence and crime, abandoned by the society and adults that are supposed to be protecting them. There are no clear good guys and bad guys in this drama; everyone is cast in shades of grey. Our main leads, Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri, run the prostitution business, and are both from broken family backgrounds. Their actions are morally questionable at best, but the top tier performances from Kim Dong Hee (you might remember him from Itaewon Class) and Park Ju Hyun make you cheer for them anyway. You want them to have a happy ending, despite the horrible things they do. The audience is always reminded that despite how clever they are in staying ahead, their actions have consequences, and they’re just high school kids. The drama never pulls it punches.

But, weirdly enough, it’s also a love story. And that’s the part the really sticks with me until now. (The chemistry between the main leads is absolute dynamite and I could watch ten episodes of them just verbally sparring with each other. They don’t even kiss. They’re that fantastic when together on screen.)

I’m writing this because this is undoubtedly one of my all time favorite kdramas and I have a lot of feelings about our main pairing, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri. I can’t call them a couple (wait, didn’t I just say they fall in love) because their relationship can’t be labelled simply as that. Think of it as something similar to the main leads in My Ahjussi. Two people who should have become soulmates, yet met at the wrong time.

This kdrama is not particularly happy, and while I do encourage people to watch this, I am warning that the subject matter is extremely dark. If you’re sensitive to scenes depicting sexual assault, graphic violence, or anything in that zip code you’ll want to steer clear.

Also, I’ll be diving into spoiler territory in this analysis. So if you want to go in clean, then stop reading here.

Still here? Awesome. Let’s dive deep into the messy, amazing pairing that is Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri. First, let’s do a brief character background on our two main leads, starting with Ji-soo.

Oh Ji-soo is one half of our main pairing and this story starts with him. He lives by himself and has been essentially abandoned by his only parents; his father is a failed businessman who gambles whatever money he acquires on scams and his mother ran away. His apartment is small, sparse, but functional. He owns only a few outfits aside from his school uniform. The only unique item he owns is a pet hermit crab that he takes care of. His life outside of school is non-existent; he has no friends, no one to hang out with and do typical high school teenager activities with. He takes care of himself and lives only for himself and his “dream”: to graduate, attend college, get married, and have kids like a normal person.

But to do that, he needs a large amount of money. He has no other financial means to do so (his father is largely absent, as is his mother), so he decides, at some point, to start up this protection business for prostitutes. The drama doesn’t go into detail about the how and why he came to this conclusion that this was the best way to make a lot of money in a short amount of time, so you’ll have to suspend your disbelief from the get go. Considering the themes of the story (how youths abandoned by society tend to act out in extreme ways to make it in this world), it’s not hard to believe his desperation would drive him to make such a decision.

Ji-soo, despite his shady business, is actually a decent person. There’s a streak of humanity that exists inside him that refuses to go out, despite the increasingly dark and bleak events that start to overtake his life. He’s attached to his hermit crab, cares for his “employees” outside of them being tools to make him money, and doesn’t want to see anyone get hurt. He goes above and beyond what’s required to help out people at the risk of his own life (in particular, Gyu-ri, and we’ll get into that shortly).

What we learn from the first few episodes is that Oh Ji-soo is extremely smart and methodical in how he approaches his life. At school, he is known as a model student - quiet, top of the class in terms of grades, doesn’t draw any attention to himself, always follows along with what the teachers ask of him. Only his homeroom teacher, Mr. Cho, seems to consider his quiet style of existence to be concerning and tries to make him less socially awkward by pairing him up with another student in a new extracurricular club. This leads to the introduction of Bae Gyu-ri, Ji-soo’s longtime crush and future partner-in-crime.

Meet Bae Gyu-ri, the other half of our dynamic duo. Her introduction into the story kickstarts the entire plot, as one of her earliest actions leads to a domino effect that spells increasing doom and tragedy for our main leads. She messes with Ji-soo’s operation at a critical moment and she spends the rest of the drama doing her best to make up for the consequences that follow.

In my personal opinion, she is probably the best main female lead I’ve ever seen in a kdrama. Hands down, no other character exists (currently) that rivals her sheer cunning, wit, and badassery. Gyu-ri is Crazy, capital C, and is the chaos to Ji-soo’s control; the fire to his ice. Despite being the direct cause of half the events that happen to Ji-soo in the drama, he can’t help but need her because of what she offers. They make an incredible team. Her competitiveness, her need to win no matter the odds, helps them survive time and time again.

Gyu-ri is from the opposite end of the spectrum of Ji-soo; he’s dirt poor and she’s insanely rich (always nice to see a reversal of typical kdrama tropes). Her mother and father run a successful entertainment company. Gyu-ri is popular at school, friends with seemingly everybody, pretty, cheerful and gets along well with her teachers. Ji-soo, and the audience, believe from the beginning that she has the perfect life. It’s not hard to believe that she’s just involving herself in Ji-soo’s business because she’s bored and needs an outlet, at first.

We soon learn otherwise. Gyu-ri has more in common with Ji-soo than he initially realizes, in that they’re both trapped in circumstances beyond their control - it’s just that Gyu-ri’s cage is gilded, whereas his is not. Her parents are strict and have her life planned out for her, all without her consent or input, leaving her feeling frustrated and powerless despite her rich lifestyle. A suicide attempt hasn’t done much to change her parents attitude towards her, only serving to further their control over her life.

So, when she learns of Ji-soo’s operation she immediately seeks to angle her way into it. First, she tries to rip him off, believing that he’s an evil “pimp” and thus deserves it. But after spending some time with him, she changes her mind last second and decides to help him out instead.

And, now, let’s get into their relationship, which is one of the best (if not the best) aspect in the entire series.

I need to be upfront about something: the relationship between Ji-soo and Gyu-ri is not exactly healthy. I wouldn’t describe it as toxic - the circumstances surrounding them aren’t exactly the best environment to encourage open and honest communication - but it’s definitely not what should be considered ideal, especially for young adults, and especially for young adults who are dabbling in crime instead of studying.

So, why do I love them so much? If you’ve read some of my previous posts, you know that I loathe toxic relationships in kdramas, so I understand if you think I’m coming off as hypocritical here. Why do I like Oh Ji-soo and Bae Gyu-ri when I didn’t like, for example from recent history, (oh boy, here I go again on my Nevertheless BS) Park Jae-eon and Yu Na-bi?

First, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri are way cooler than Jae-eon and Na-bi ever could be. They run a criminal enterprise that involves having a high amount of intelligence, cunning, and daring to do so. Do Jae-eon and Na-bi run a criminal enterprise as a side business? No, they don’t, because they’re boring art students.

Secondly, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri actually progress in their relationship and change their views as they learn from each other. Now, granted, that progress isn’t towards becoming better versions of each other - quite the opposite. But at least they have progress. Jae-eon and Na-bi stayed in the same stupid cycle for the whole series and then decided that it was better staying that way as opposed to trying for something else.

Last, but certainly not least, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri are actually interesting to watch for me. The chemistry between Park Ju Hyun and Kim Dong Hee is explosive and they way they spar, exchange looks, and just generally exist around each other on screen is something I can watch forever. I’ve said this before but Han So Hee and Song Kang’s on screen chemistry, outside of their intimate scenes, really didn’t impress me.

Okay, back to Extracurricular. This relationship, man. It’s all I can think about (other than HomeCha’s Du-sik and Hye-jin, but that’s another post). Ji-soo and Gyu-ri are so good together.

I’ve noted before that Ji-soo is methodical in how he approaches his life; he plans out everything ahead, and rigs any situation as much as he can in his favor. It’s brilliant, but when a crisis happens, he doesn’t know how to deal with it effectively. He panics and flounders; becomes indecisive at a time when clear, decisive action is required.

Enter Gyu-ri. She quickly becomes the partner he never knew he needed. When there’s a situation, she becomes invaluable in her quick thinking and wit, coming up with solutions on the fly. It’s not perfect, but it keeps them just one small step ahead of whatever is coming their way.

The only thing preventing them from becoming unstoppable is the lack of communication and trust they have with each other. A lot of that has to do with how Gyu-ri entered Ji-soo’s business - she blackmailed him first, and, when that failed, she strong armed her way into getting him to accept her help. It’s implied in the drama that Ji-soo has had a crush on Gyu-ri for a while (since ninth grade, I believe) and in the first episode he actually gets the chance to spend time with her outside of school on a sort of quasi-date.

It goes sideways pretty quickly because of some shenanigans from his business, but not before she gets to know him and says some pretty touching words regarding his situation. Poor guy is head over heels - even after finding out that she’s the one blackmailing him, his feelings are only dampened, not extinguished. When he catches a glimpse of her family’s situation, he gains a deeper understanding of her and why she acts the way she does. Even more importantly, Ji-soo treats her the same after finding out this information which, to someone like Gyu-ri, means more than if he comforted her about it.

If you want to see a physical representation of how he feels, other than paying attention to his actions, you can see it in him keeping mementos from Gyu-ri. She has an interesting habit of folding bags into origami shapes and giving it to him. Even after the blackmail reveal, you can see that he continues to keep these in a container on his desk. It’s really cute that he keeps these, when it probably doesn’t even matter that much to Gyu-ri.

Towards the end of the drama, Ji-soo prepares to turn himself in to prevent Gyu-ri from being implicated in the crimes they committed. And it costs him almost everything to protect her. Ji-soo, the quiet, nerdy kid, puts himself on the line time and time again to protect Gyu-ri, knowing that it puts his life and his dream at risk to do so. And all for what? For some girl that he thinks doesn’t even like him in return?

Well, let’s talk about that. Because I’ve seen some comments that Gyu-ri was only using Ji-soo for her own selfish gain. And I can agree that was how it was at the beginning for her; she definitely was only interested in acquiring money, like Ji-soo was, in order to achieve her own goal of being free from her parents.

But, oh man, that is not what is motivating her at the end.

It’s actually pointed out relatively early by some of her friends that it’s obvious that she likes Ji-soo more than he likes her. Understandably Ji-soo is keeping her at arms length from him given the whole recent blackmailing, so it would make sense that it looks that way.

Further questioning reveals what she likes the most about him:

“It’s not like I’m crazy about him. He’s fun. And amusing. He’s smart. And there’s a certain charm he has. He also has a wolfish side to him. But he thinks he’s a puppy.”

But, as she gets to know Ji-soo better, you can certainly see that she starts to fall hard for him. As a cover story for why they hang out so much together during and after school, Gyu-ri states to everyone that they’re dating. The reactions across the school definitely imply that this is a shocking development, which means that Gyu-ri hasn’t dated anyone before. So why Ji-soo other than the reasons she herself states?

He challenges her, just as she challenges him. Gyu-ri may be the more dynamic, quick thinking of the pair but Ji-soo is every inch her intellectual equal - just in different ways. She doesn’t seem to be the type to be easily impressed, but you can tell that she’s definitely impressed by Ji-soo’s operation and how thoroughly set up it is. When Ji-soo is frustrated at the beginning by his setbacks, he blows up at another student (knocks him out in a crazy punch) and immediately walks over to Gyu-ri afterwards (who saw the whole thing) to inform her that she is now his partner in crime.

The look in her eyes, and the small smirk she has speaks volumes about her attraction to him in that scene. Smoldering.

And, oh yes, she’s prone to jealousy. Another classmate, Min-hee, gives Ji-soo a present out of the blue (it was supposed to be for her boyfriend, Ki-tae, but that’s another sub-plot) - all within view of Gyu-ri. It’s hilarious how she tries to brush it off. Later, for plot reasons, Ji-soo has to spend more time with Min-hee which only furthers Gyu-ri’s annoyance.

And her motivations stop being entirely about the money and more towards helping preserve the dream that she and Ji-soo share about being free. There’s a scene in episode 8 where it’s revealed that, due to a business partnership with a local gang (set up by none other than Gyu-ri herself in a desperate move), Ji-soo would have to drop out of school permanently to work on their behalf. Gyu-ri overhears this and, despite badly needing the gang’s help in sustaining their own business, immediately terminates the partnership.

All because it would interfere with Ji-soo’s dream.

Man, if that isn’t love.

In the following episode, Gyu-ri, and later on Ji-soo, is kidnapped by the same gang in retaliation for terminating their partnership. Ji-soo comes to her rescue but Gyu-ri is already almost free (again, she’s really, really badass) and is demanding that they bring Ji-soo to her instead of running for her life.

Surviving this latest attempt puts the two in a reflective, vulnerable mood and Gyu-ri asks Ji-soo why he keeps saving her. Ji-soo asks later on why she keeps risking her life to be with him. They don’t say the answer in words but in an almost kiss (yeah, you read that right - almost).

And then, if you aren’t already convinced, Ji-soo crosses his one last remaining line in an effort to keep Gyu-ri safe; he accidentally pushes a fellow classmate down some steps and, instead of helping her, leaves her to die after grabbing the evidence she has on him and Gyu-ri.

Extracurricular pulls off quite the magic trick here, hiding this well done love story in the middle of a serious crime drama.

The real tragedy is that Ji-soo thinks that Gyu-ri views this whole business, and by extension his life, as one big game. It’s something that she takes offense at, visibly becoming upset when he says that.

But even if that were true, he should be assured since Gyu-ri doesn’t like to lose.

As they hurtle towards the end and face up to the consequences of their actions, Ji-soo and Gyu-ri undoubtedly lose sight of their original goals and dreams. They do some fairly horrible things to stay alive and ahead of the police who are close on their trail. You can’t really blame them for doing what they did; in the face of a society that has abandoned them, what they’re doing is a logical outcome to gain what they want so desperately and deserve so much: the chance to be free to live like normal, care-free people.

I can’t say for certain that they achieve that. The drama is serious in consequences and, at the end, the net around them is drawing tighter and tighter. I won’t spoil the ending scene for you, because I highly encourage you watch this drama yourself but I will say this: Ji-soo and Gyu-ri seem stuck in an impossible situation with nowhere to go, and no one to help them, with a clock ticking down towards either death or discovery by the police.

But, all the same, I’m always the optimist. They’ve gotten through situations like this before and they can certainly do so again. Maybe not as bad as this one, but not too far out of their league. And, like I mentioned before, Gyu-ri doesn’t like to lose. Especially when it comes to Ji-soo.

Their relationship is truly dangerous, as Ji-soo himself notes. Them being together is the source of their problems; they’re too much alike now, as opposed to the beginning of the drama where he stated that they’re too different. Their love is the kind of love where both of them are willing to burn the whole world down if it means keeping each other safe.

I’m a real sucker for those kind of love stories. No one’s a hero here. They’re just kids in high school, doing the best with what they know.

Who are we to judge what is right and wrong? Especially when the one committing the acts are high school kids who don’t know any better and just want to save each other?

Do we have that right?

Do they really deserve that punishment? Shouldn’t we be pointing fingers at the society that forced them to act this way?

Extracurricular really makes you think about that. Is it really so outlandish and terrible what Ji-soo and Gyu-ri do to survive when the adults who are supposed to be protecting them, teaching them better, have failed in their duty?

Maybe they really did win at the end. Not so much in succeeding in their goals but in gaining something that not even regular people are likely to find - a partner, a soulmate, someone who will stand by you no matter what.

If you do watch the ending, and are not an optimist like I am, then all I can say is this: whatever happened, they were together at the end.

They were together.
