ur website is awesome where did you learn html and css!! ive been looking for months now but i cant find any starting points i can easily understand
Thank you! I kind of mostly used to do Neopets template junk in 2007 and had some extremely basic and outdated HTML knowledge until recently LOL (As in that my knowledge was basically knowing that <i> made your text italic and if I typed color="blue" it would change the color of the text haha)
But yeah, I'm basically self-taught! One of the courses I did in the past did have a few Web Design classes, but I had a really hard time understanding any of it and my grades were awful, so I hardly count that as having contributed anything to my knowledge x) (We were forced to make the most bland minimalistic corporate websites so the lack of fun in that definitely contributed hahaha)
I guess starting out really depends on what you're personally comfortable with? The way I personally started was that I used one of those Free Website Makers like Wix/Weebly/etc to try and "sketch" my website! I had this old unused !Weebly portfolio website I wasn't doing anything with, so I used that
Tumblr media
W3Schools is the MVP for this stuff since it has basically everything you can learn about HTML/CSS/etc! For my Website I remember first starting by trying to create the navbar, looking at the Weebly mockup and trying to mentally deconstruct it all into boxes to try and understand how I could recreate it with my own code!
(The reason my navbar looks so different from the screenshot was because I had a really hard time recreating it xD And I ended up with something a lot more basic to match my skillset!)
Something that always worked for me was using templates and just trial and error my way into trying to understand what did what x)
Considering my website has the three-column format, I do recall using SadGrl's Layout Maker code as a reference for my own!
And I guess that's advice I can give?? Finding websites you like, or if you're wondering how someone did something, how their font has weird colours, what animations they're using, etc etc, just go look into their source code, or use the Inspect Tool (F12) and select elements to try and understand the code!
I do sometimes hide goofy hidden text and easter eggs in my source codes, so I'm personally cool with people looking through mine to understand how I did things :)
I definitely relate to this all being overwhelming or confusing at the start, so I'd say just take it slow and make things fun for yourself! I used weird fonts and bright colours when trying to see what does what, use dumb placeholder texts and images too LMAO
Another thing that helped was that I found gifs and images I liked to place on the website and try to make it feel all the more personal and cozy!
Again this is just my personal experience and what I did to make the learning experience more enjoyable :)

Went back to revisit the Sade chapter in The Rebel, and yeah this is the part that really stood out to me reading 120 Days. Like yes they're doing depraved things, but is it really libertine if you have a strict schedule for when and how those acts must be performed? The four libertines are still restrained from truly acting on their desires, because of the pacts they've made to wait to actually fuck anyone.
And the second part as well. The libertines still have much more agency than the others; at least their restrictions are self-imposed. But no one else is allowed any movement towards pursuing their desires, and in the movie the two girls get in trouble for that (possibly also in the book? it's been a while since I've read it).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Camus says that Sade extolled totalitarianism in the name of freedom, and I think the way he's reading Sade is very similar to an Objectivist philosophy, where the only moral goal is the happiness of the self (in Sade's case specifically sexual pleasure), which, while it posits itself as a philosophy of freedom, it's not. If the only moral law is to be selfish, that has to naturally lead to the subjugation and dehumanization of others. Any system that places individual gain as the highest goal at the expense of anything and everything else coughcoughcapitalismcough and also fascism bc the state becomes an individual rather than a community of people*, will inherently lead to the oppression of whoever in that society can't manage to fight their way to the top.
Tumblr media
And he also says that these societies/systems built on subjugation are naturally doomed to fail if you follow the logic to its end. He doesn't go a ton into this and I wish he did, but I'm going to go on sort of a tangent and say that, in the sense of it being a regime, if you've built your identity on the massacre or supression of outsiders, if your unifying factor is an us vs them, someday that "them" will be gone and you'll fall apart. I think the metaphor works better if we're talking about an economic system that's like this, because if there's no constraints and the strong naturally subjugate the weak, you're going to end up with monopolies taking over everything and wiping out the competition that breeds innovation (fuck you Adam Smith; I'm right you're wrong go suck a dick about it). And if we follow it to the absolute farthest end, that company's gonna be the executioner standing alone in the castle amid the desolation of everything around it.
Re the green highlighted part:
Tumblr media
this is The best part of the movie. Even in such as a place as their weird wacko murder sex mansion, there's resistance.
*not saying any of this is what Sade is saying

what started as a way to pass the time while miserably sick for two weeks has become a new hyperfixation and i have catapulted myself face first into the wayhaven chronicles and i wanna yell about my detectives under the cut
Eilidh is reserved, kind in action if not in affect, patient, logical, soft-spoken, and iron-willed. Her backbone makes steel seem doughy. Her resolve is unshakable. She is the older sister of Det. Cameron Fox. She joined the Wayhaven PD for something mentally engaging to do. She is wildly intelligent and gets Weird when she doesn't have a puzzle to solve; once she has one, she's a dog with a bone. She feels intensely but privately; to see - or, more accurately, to be shown - what Eilidh is feeling is a surer sign of trust than anything else. Though she experiences emotions intensely, she is able to let them go. She is without artifice and almost without ego; she owns her mistakes, but does not dwell on them. Beyond her very small circle of beloved people, she cares very little what others think of her. She did not believe in soulmates until Adam; she has never wanted anyone as badly as she wants him, has never loved as fiercely as she loves him, but will not settle for anything less than all-in. She has no intention of waiting for him to get his head out of his ass, but also knows she will never find his equal. There is no getting over Adam du Mortain, there is only learning how to live with him at arm's length. Besides her brother, Mason is Eilidh's best friend, full stop. She loves Tina and Verda, but she knows they oftentimes wish she were different, more open, warmer. Mason is the first to not only accept but respect her for who she is, no changes imagined or required. She is slow to anger and uses violence only when her hand is forced, but heaven help you if you touch her brother. Neither Fox sibling has a good relationship with their mother. Eilidh sees Rebecca as little more than a stranger. Rebecca projects acceptance onto Eilidh's stoicism and Eilidh does not trust Rebecca enough to be emotionally honest or demonstrative with her. In turn, Rebecca does not know Eilidh well enough to recognize the difference.
in my blorbo headspace, my two detectives are siblings, they both work for the wayhaven PD, and they both have the blood mutation. rook died just after cameron, the youngest, was born. i'm handwaving the probable police policy against siblings working together in a professional capacity because, quite frankly, i don't care enough about police procedure to portray it accurately. also if their mother can be their agency liason/handler, their sibling can be their partner in (solving) crime. also also vampires exist, we're already firmly in unrealistic territory
Detective Eilidh (AY-lee) Fox - Intimidating/Cautious/Genuine/Stoic/Stubborn. 34 y/o. 5'9. Dark brown hair, grey eyes. Highest skill: Deduction.
Cameron is passionate, combative, irreverant, loyal, has unrepentant problems with authority, and is a little bit of an asshole. He is the younger brother of Det. Eilidh Fox. He joined the Wayhaven PD as an alternative to prison and despite it being what landed him in hot water in the first place, he still punches first and asks questions later, if at all. His sarcasm is a bulwark for his soft spots, of which there are many, the biggest being his sister. The only thing quicker (and sharper) than Cameron's wit is his anger. He is possessive in such a way it backfires into heroics: you mess with his people or his town, you'd better have an excellent exit strategy, for hell hath no fury like a pissed off Cameron Fox. He is in a Something with Mason. Like Mason, Cameron doesn't do complicated; he prefers one night stands and flings without expectations of commitment. Bobby was his last attempt at a real relationship, and it ended disastrously. He and Mason have the same general ineptitude with feelings and the recognition of them. Cameron is stupid gone for Mason and is absolutely clueless about it, right up until he isn't, at which point he tries very hard to be clueless again; the only thing more terrifying than what he feels for Mason is the possibility of Not Having Mason. Come hell or high feelings, he will not rock this boat. He wouldn't consider himself super close with anyone in Unit Bravo besides Mason, but if he had to choose a second favorite, it would be Felix. In Rebecca's absence, Eilidh raised him and he would kill - and die - for his sister. Neither Fox sibling has a good relationship with their mother, but of the two, Cameron is more openly hostile to Rebecca. Cameron felt Rebecca's absence less, as Eilidh stepped into the caregiver role without second thought; his anger at Rebecca is for the burdens Eilidh had to bear in her stead.
Detective Cameron Fox - Charming/Impulsive/Sarcastic/Stoic/Even split Easy-going and Stubborn. 31 y/o. 6'3. Golden blond hair, dark blue eyes. Highest skill: Combat.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
oh my gods thank you so much for asking i could go on and on about these characters tbh ✨
Laurent of Vere (Captive Prince trilogy): okay i admit he's an asshole but like in the best way. he's so outspoken and not afraid to say what he thinks to the point of cruelty and good at swordfighting and dude i wanna be like that. also he is very fucking smart. his mind is like a maze that not many people would be able to figure out. or something. his words are like weapons. and he's stoic but at some specific times you see him being expressive (sometimes against his will) like when he blushes at something Damen says or actually smiles or laughs and it just warms my fucking heart i love him so much tbh
Nico di Angelo (PJO): he helped me get over my homophobia when i was a kid. this dude has literally gone through so much with his sister dying and dealing with the feelings he had for Percy and the hate he felt he was supposed to have for him and the internalized homophobia and wondering what other people would think about him being gay and also he's powerful as fuck he has a sword made from Stygian Iron he absolutely SLAYED in the last battle against Kronos he's gay he can teleport and he has trauma and survivor's guilt and he wears his fucking avian jacket everywhere and never brushes his hair and survived fucking TARTARUS on his own dude no he's fucking amazing and deserves all the love in the world
Adam Parrish (the Raven Cycle): he is the smartest person alive probably. he survived his stupid abusive fucking father and works really hard in school and in life because he believes you have to do that to get somewhere in life and he wants to fucking get somewhere. he cares so much about his friends and is not disaster bisexual representation no that boy is organized as fuck. we should all feel lucky that he exists we as a community as a fucking planet do not deserve him <3 also he sacrificed himself to a sentient forest to save everyone i think so that was pretty badass ngl
Ronan Lynch: this dude can literally bring shit out of his dreams. he swears a lot and cares so deeply about his friends it's so fucking beautiful. he dreamed the sentient forest his bf Adam sacrificed himself to. he looks dangerous as fuck and can be when he wants to but also he's just a huge softie. he's gay and he used to fist fight his older brother and he can dream things that don't make logical sense into existence. he is just,,,,, this amazing fucking character and right now it's hard to put it all into words but bottomline: i'm happy he exists
Andrew Minyard (All for the Game): he has been through so. much. this man keeps knives in the fucking leather band thingies on his arms which he wears to cover the scars he has from all the self harm that he inflicted because he was fucking r*ped when he was seven (for the first time, anyway) by his older foster brother (fuck Drake Spear, the bastard). he cares so much about some people but doesn't show it in very obvious ways, mostly. i mean he killed his mom because she was abusing his twin brother and if that isn't love then love doesn't exist. i'm so happy he survived all that shit. he survived and has found a family in the Foxes and a boyfriend in Neil Josten who he loves very much and hdjdjfjskxkdkd
Neil Josten: was on the run for like eight years with his mom from his crazy ass father who wanted to murder them. even after his mother died after bleeding out from a wound his father inflicted and he burned her body along with their car and buried her bones he lasted a full day without puking his guts out, and then he kept going. so many would've just given up at that point, understandably i think. but he didn't. and then he became a Fox and was playing Exy and failed his attempts to not get attached to his teammates he grew to care about them all so much especially Andrew who he is in love with and whose boundaries he respects like he has literally actively put himself in harm's way so many times just so nothing will happen to his family and Andrew. he cares so much i love him.
Blitzø (Helluva Boss): literally just a guy. well i mean an imp one of the denizens of Hell who decided to open up his own assassin company thingy where you'd pay him and he'd go to the human world with the help of the grimoire his sorta fuckbuddy ish crush Stolas lends him and with his employees to kill the person you want them to kill. so yeah that's pretty badass. yknow, in a weird, twisted way. he's also foul-mouthed as fuck which is always fun to see :) but what made me kinda connect to his character is the dude's estimate for his own self worth is basically non-existent he pushes away anyone who cares about him and puts up the facade of an annoying asshole (which he kinda is naturally) to not deal with his feelings sometimes. i relate
Wylan Van Eck (Six of Crows): his dad is a fucking asshole who wanted him killed because he can't read. who the fuck does that literally wtf. but he escaped and joined the Crows [Kaz, Inej, Jesper (who is his boyfriend), Nina, and Matthias (dead)] who are all just kids who are fighting to survive in this horrible ass world. also they want money to buy stuff which, same. but Wylan has so many strengths like he can create bombs he's a flautist he's good at the sciency stuff and music and is smart as fuck and he's such a pure person like. i love him so much <3
Will Byers (Stranger Things): this guy cares so much about his friends and family and will do anything to help make sure they're okay. he's in love with his best friend and he thinks he's a mistake which he is NOT. he is a fucking GIFT to mankind we should all feel lucky he exists because we do not fucking deserve him. it broke my heart to see him being pushed aside and forgotten but in season five he better get all he deserves and more. literally i love him so much and i love when he's a little rude and rolls his eyes and that one time he asked Jonathan “is that why you don't have any friends ?” with the most innocent fucking face ever like he is the best. i love him. #will byers supremacy
Angel Dust (Hazbin hotel): okay i watched this at like 3am today and can i just say: AMAZING. like his character is just so publicly flamboyant and i love that for him. i mean i guess it's literal Hell and no one gives a shit but he's there and he's a sex worker and dude does not give a fuck about what other people think. he cares about specific people and his best friend is Cherri Bomb and they did the music video thing together where we find out he was (still is, i guess) sexually abused by this bitch Valentino who we should all hate. fuck him seriously why are people so horrible. he cries and resorts to the sex and drugs as a way to numb the pain. fuck. he even died from a drug overdose. i hope when we get the hazbin hotel series he's like okay and stuff because i love him so much for and it hurts that that shit happened to him.
so yeah this is my list not necessarily in this order😅 thanks again for asking i appreciate it <3

This is pretty specific but I am in love with your wrighting soooo, how about Kanjuro, Sabo, and Lucci with an s/o that has vaginismus and they open up about it? Like how they would accommodate and reassure them?
Heyya! 🍀 thank you so much! I'm sorry about the super long wait on this. Hope I did your request justice and hope you enjoy~
(Gender Neutral)
Headcanons: Kanjuro, Sabo, Lucci with S/O who has vaginismus, how they accommodate and reassure them.
Tumblr media
Kurozumi Kanjuro
🖌It's not exactly something {Name} spoke about to anyone. Mostly out of the concern of misunderstanding, but when the topic of intimacy and such arises. {Name} decided to explain their concerns to Kanjuro in a way he can understand.
🖌Kanjuro was happy that {Name} decided to explain everything to him and he did his best to understand. The things he could not completely understand he asked {Name} about... being a visual learner however, it was a bit of mission for {Name} to draw and explain.
🖌Kanjuro is very understanding and tries his hardest to reassure his partner that they are still perfect to him. Knowing their insecurity was proving otherwise, he works hard to ensure they don't have any reason to feel bad over something they have no control over.
🖌 Incredibly patient and wanting to learn everything he can about vaginismus. He has the worry that his intentions might be misunderstood.
🖌 He encourages his partner to speak to doctors and such who could potentially help, if they want help. He is with them every step of the way and does his part to try and help them. Kanjuro will constantly comfort his partner and tell them never to apologise.
🖌Can be eccentric in the ways he tries to help. {Name} understands that he has the best intentions and always thanks him for his efforts in trying to understand and help.
Tumblr media
Sabo
🎩There has always been a very good trust and open space in which to discuss anything for {Name} and Sabo. Which is why there was not much hesitation when they decided to explain the reason behind their reluctance when it came to things like intimacy.
🎩Sabo's first thought was one of understanding. Initially as to why {Name} felt worried whenever talk of being intimate would come up. Sabo also assumed it was because of him that {Name} was a little bit distant, feeling relieved that it was not the case.
🎩 Sabo can't fathom as to why his partner feels bad. "{Name}... you never have to apologise for something like that. Don't be silly"
🎩 At first he was nervous, but is adamant that he wants to help. Especially with some "exercises" that would help grow more accustomed to things. It was a learning experience for both of them, but {Name} felt much better knowing that Sabo was happy to help and remain patient.
🎩 Keeps his partner encouraged and motivated to keep doing what they feel is necessary.
🎩Does his best not to overwhelm {Name} with his constant questions, there is a lot of self study. He also doesn't want to make it the front and centre of their relationship. It is important to him but does not want {Name} to feel like it's his only point of attention.
Tumblr media
Rob Lucci
🐆 Lucci is very observant and can easily see his partner appears distressed over something. Not knowing to the cause. Lucci is one to pry via means of investigation, but seeing this is a topic his partner has not brought up with him and decides to ask instead of prying into his partners privacy.
🐆While Lucci did not know the exact reason, he had assumed it was something along those lines. His way of providing care and a sense of normality was originally addressing the situation with a slight hint of his usual indifference.
🐆Before emotion comes the logical approach from Lucci. He discusses what {Name} wants and if they want to overcome it. He is disciplined and dedicated to setting goals for his partner.
🐆 Is very supportive in his own way. Many people don't assume he is supporting {Name} but that's because they simply don't understand him or his actions.
🐆 Takes an approach to push {Name}, giving them the encouragement to be more open about their worries, no matter what they may be. Lucci doesn't want his partner to feel like they can't talk about things with him and try to make them feel as safe as possible.
🐆 Spoke to the right people about how to support and help his partner. Learning together to overcome everything with them.

Masked Singer Season 5 Episode 3 Recap: Group A Returns With a Wildcard (Commentary & Guesses)
Hi guys! Welcome or welcome back to Ana’s Masked Singer recap, where I, Ana, recap every single episode of The Masked Singer. Ok, so I'm on time this time I swear (I try to do these the weekend after the show airs or Friday), and now we are starting to get the wildcards which was super exciting and Joel Mchale was guest judging so it was a very fun episode to watch! We’re back onto Group A but this time someone new joins the group, so stay tuned until the end to talk about that someone. Anyways, let’s get into it, starting with the eliminated contestant:
So the eliminated mask was...
*DRUMROLL PLEASE*
The Raccoon 🦝
Tumblr media
Commentary: honestly, I am not even the slightest bit surprised that he got eliminated... he should have gone home earlier but that’s neither here nor there, the Masked Singer likes to do that to us so whatever. But like honestly this is gonna sound mean, and look, not everyone is a singer, and he gave it the good old college try and I respect the hell out of that, but omg all I gotta say about his performance of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash is yikes. That’s it, that’s all I gotta say about that... anyways, let’s reveal this rodent or mammal, idk man who told you guys I was an animal expert?!
Raccoon was revealed to be (I got this one too yay!)
Danny Trejo
Tumblr media
Yeah, I guessed it baby! I even have proof, just look at my 1st recap of the season and it’s there, I got it! Yayyy! Anyways, I mean I know him, I have seen him around ofc (he has done a lot of acting and he even has a restaurant and everything), but like he can’t sing and that’s ok, he had fun, it’s what matters. Good job Danny Trejo and thank God he’s gone because finally my ears can be in peace.
Having said that, let’s move onto our remaining 4 (yes, 4 because wildcard baby!):
1. Seashell 🐚
Tumblr media
Commentary: Her performance of Confident by Demi Lovato was to me much better than her last performance. It seemed like she was more confident (hehe no pun intended) in this one, kind of came into her own and let out the power in her voice. She was a bit timid and nervous in the first performance and it kind of reminded me of how Jellyfish started out, but this one was a lot more diva and powerful, I enjoyed it a lot. I really love Seashell, she is quickly becoming one of my favorite contestants (except nobody can beat my favorite who you will see in a moment)
I am doubling down on my guess:
Tamera Mowry
Tumblr media
Clues/Reasoning: ok, like this one I feel super confident about and the clues kind of seal the deal for me:
The doodle of “Seashell with the shell mask on”= reference to the intro of Sister Sister
A certain shell man asked her out and the baseball on the screen= she is talking about her husband, Fox News correspondent Adam Housley (which btw is another reason why she is on this show, bc it runs in the Fox family), who used to be a professional baseball player (oh and the required her to do things she was scared of means that he helped her feel more comfortable about being on TV aka when she was on the Real)
2 minute stopwatch= she’s older than her twin sister, Tia, by 2 minutes haha 😂 (this was a very weird thing to be like yeah bro ik that... again I say, Google is a magical thing)
2. Robopine 🦔
Tumblr media
Commentary: He sang All of Me by John Legend and honestly song choice was 👌, like I would have picked that for him too. It was absolutely stunning and I can just close my eyes and enjoy the song, which that’s what some of the best ballad performances tend to do. I absolutely loved it, he is my favorite, if you can’t tell, and this was my favorite performance of the night. I have a prediction that Robopine might make it to the finals honestly because he is just that amazing.
I am changing my guess and I am more confident now with:
Tyrese Gibson
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: alright so I know that he isn’t 60 but I have a feeling he is lying about that and that he’s from Costa Rica (that’s too direct of a clue to be true you know and I feel like he is lying... Ken did say in the beginning that Robopine is the most confusing, so I do think that he is lying)... anyways clue time:
A lot of superhero clues= he will be playing one in Jared Leto’s Morbius film from Marvel
The lying means something = he has an album called Alter Ego, someone in the YouTube comments told me that he did a shoot with GQ called “60 the new 30” so that’s where the age thing might come from
IT SOUNDS A LOT LIKE HIM, OK?! Legit this is the most logic bomb I can give you right here... he’s trying to fool us but the voice is what matters... if you wanna compare voices go ahead, here’s a video that can help (it helped me even though the background singers kinda took over, but you get the point, it was live)
youtube
3. Russian Dolls 🪆
Tumblr media
Commentary: THEY DIVIDEDDDDD... omg there’s 3 now! I FREAKING CALLED IT!! Anyways, they sang Wonder by Shawn Mendes and again I say their harmonies are so on point, it’s fantastic! I throughly enjoyed this performance, it was great! Their voices work really great together (ofc duh because they are a band... they have to be) and it was a really great song choice as well.
Again, I am gonna double down here (and them being 3 makes it even more convincing for me):
Hanson (All 3 of them this time)
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: ok, so now that there’s 3 of them, I don’t have to sound dumb and be like ummmmm it’s 2 of the Hanson brothers, which two I am not sure, but two of them. This time I can say it is all of Hanson, all 3 of them! WOOO! This performance really solidified it for me. Anyways, here are the logic bombs aka clues:
He was doing what he loved and rushed to the hospital = Zac, one of the brothers, was involved in a motorcycle accident in which he (get this, it’s really bad like reading it on Google made me go ouch that must have been a terrible accident) broke three ribs, his collarbone, and scapula.
The fire truck= the fire department was involved in the accident, which he spoke about in October 2019
4. Surprise! It’s Wildcard Time: Introducing the Orca (whale) 🐳
Tumblr media
Commentary: ok, so he performed We’re Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister, and it was meh, it was ok. He sounds like a comedian, and his voice is so familiar, it’s killing me. Anyways, he is talk singing the entire time and there are parts where he sounds out of breath, so I don’t think he is a professional singer. The costume though (since I couldn’t really review that beforehand) looks like a pool floatie on top and a blue version of Banana from season 3 from the chest down, which is kind of cool (I would give it a 8/10 if I were to rate it). I really love that top head part, it looks super great, the costume designers killed it.
Ok, this one I am more unsure about but I am gonna say that I am between these 2:
Bill Burr or Adam Sandler
(Burr is the one pictured below, couldn’t put both images because Tumblr doesn’t let me do more than 10 pictures so just pretend you can also see Adam Sandler’s photo)
Tumblr media
Reasoning/Clues: I am gonna have to skip this one... because I am not sure about this one, I am just going off of voice, the clues confuse me, but you have any ideas, feel free to comment them please, I need all the help I can get.
So that’s it, wildcard and all. I hope you guys enjoyed this, I am so sorry for the picture issue, it’s something that bugs me about Tumblr but whatever. I will see you guys in the next one, where we will see Group B sans Phoenix perform and add in a new wildcard, which omg I know who it is I just don’t know what it looks like, but it is the CRAB 🦀! Anyways, I will see you all next weekend, please like, comment, do all the social media things! Bye everyone! 👋🏼

Season of the Hunt Finale: A True Hunter
Summary:
It’s finally over. The Celebrant is defeated. Spider no longer has a hold on Crow. The only left question is now what?
Tumblr media
Previous Part: Here
Spider let out a small growl as he heard the laughter of the four Guardians outside the lair. He muttered a curse in Eliksni as he sat back in his chair.
“You kiss your mother with that mouth?”
Spider’s attention snapped to his left as Marcia decloaked, leaning against a pile of crates that were stacked against the wall. The guards went to raise their spears, but Spider raised a hand, stopping them. “What do you want, Marcia?” Spider growled, “I’m not in the mood for your ‘antics’.”
“I’ll say.” Marcia chuckled, “I just snuck in to see the end result of Paralight’s one-on-one with the Celebrant. Y’know, you always talk about how Drifter and I can’t seem to keep our mouths shut…and yet it was your big mouth that got your ‘little bird’ taken away. “Anything in the lair.” Honestly, how did you think that would end?”
Spider narrowed his eyes at Marcia as she stood up straight, “But if you want me to be honest here…I came here to give you a titbit of advice.”
“And that is…?”
Marcia’s expression turned serious, “Don’t underestimate Rae. She ain’t the same Guardian that walked in here two years ago.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well first off, she seems to be taking my advice. She’s started making her own rules and is starting to find things out for herself instead of taking the Vanguard’s word for granted. She’s beginning to think for herself. Secondly, and honestly more seriously, she’s got a new trick now.”
“Yes, yes, I’m aware of Stasis.” Spider replied dismissively.
“Not Stasis.”
Spider seemed intrigued as Marcia continued, “She calls it Darknebula. And from what I can tell, it works in the opposite way to Starlight.”
“Explain.”
“Starlight is triggered by the desire to protect and preserve life. Darknebula works in the opposite way: it’s triggered by the desire to kill and destroy it.” Marcia explained, “Basically, if someone was to, oh I don’t know…maybe anger her to the point of her wanting to completely annihilate them – whether she realises it or not – she becomes a feral killing machine that doesn’t stop until the source of that desire is dead. This is a warning, Spider. If she’s done following the Vanguard’s rules and you push her too far, it’s game over for you. I’ve seen that form first-hand when she was up against Eramis. Now the kell of Salvation is an ice sculpture on Europa.”
Spider just hmphed in response, “If she kills me, she loses her best ally on the Shore.”
Marcia laughed, “Oho, really? I look forward to seeing you try to tell that to a feral, acting-on-instinct Rae who has lost all sense of logic and reasoning. Hell, I’ll be impressed if you get more than a word out!” Marcia began to walk out, “Like I said, just a lil’ bit of advice for ya. Take it if ya want. See ya!”
Spider grumbled as he leaned back in his chair, watching the rogue leave.
“I hate that Hunter…”

It’s been a few weeks since the High Celebrants defeat. Spider had sent an engineer to remove the explosives from Glint’s shell, officially ending his hold on Crow and his Ghost. However, there were still remaining Wrathborns lurking in the Shore and the Dreaming City, so Crow had remained in the lair to aid Paralight in wiping them out. The last of them had finally been wiped out and the cryptoliths had begun to decay without the Celebrant maintaining them. The hunt had finally come to a close.
Crow leaned on his workbench, deep in thought, but was pulled out by his vision suddenly going dark as two hands covered his eyes from behind.
“Guess who!”
“Rae?” Crow guessed with a smirk, “No, wait. It’s Marcia!”
“I don’t smell that bad!”
“Ha! I know it’s you, Blaze.”
Blaze removed her hands from Crow’s eyes and plopped her head on his shoulder, “Yup!” Crow poked Blaze’s forehead, “Bang.”
“Gah! Crow has killed the Celebrant! Curse you, Guardiaaaaans!” Blaze dramatically sunk to the floor while Crow laughed at her performance before motioning to her armour, “New look?”
Blaze’s usual blue and gold armour had been swapped for red and gold armour, a bit similar to her very first set. Her cloak, gloves and skirt looked like fiery feathers with her boots matching the upper half of her armour. “Yeah. I’d been sticking with blue and gold for a while now.” Blaze replied, “Figured I should switch it up a little.”
“It suits you.” Crow smiled. “Thanks.” Blaze grinned, a small blush appearing on her face, as the two leaned against the table with a sigh. “I suppose this is it.” Crow said with a sense of finality, “Time to say goodbye to the Reef. To the only home I've ever known.”
“Yeah…” Blaze sighed, “It’s weird. It’s been three months, but it feels like only a few days ago we met on the moon. Now it’s over.” The two stood in comfortable silence for a moment before Blaze spoke up again, “So what are you going to do now?”
“I’ve given it some thought.” Crow replied, “Osiris actually came by earlier and we talked for a while about my plans for the future. I told him I'd considered exploring somewhere remote, like Venus, but he suggested a different course."
“What’s that?”
Crow held his head up high, “I’m coming to the Tower.”
Blaze’s eyes widened as she stood up straight, “F-for real?”
Crow nodded with a smile, “People may judge the man I was, but I refuse to cower in the shadow of his legacy. I'm a Guardian. I need to act like one. I also talked to Rae about it. She suggested joining a Fireteam and…I’ve decided to join Paralight.”
Blaze’s eyes lit up at this before lunging at Crow, wrapping her arms around him as she let out a squeal of delight. Crow stumbled back a bit before steadying himself, letting out a chuckle as he returned the hug. “That’s great! You won’t regret it, I promise!”
“I know I won’t. I’m still a bit anxious about showing my face in the Tower, but I think I’ll be okay with you and the others.” Crow cupped Blaze’s cheek and gave her a brief kiss before touching his forehead to hers, “I love you.”
“I love you too, Crow.”
 The two pulled away upon hearing footsteps approach the workshop. A moment later, Rae and Adam entered wearing new armour of their own. Rae had cut her hair, so it looked similar to her Kinderguardian hairstyle. She now wore pink, purple and blue robes with the Stasis symbol on the skirt and metal, layered shoulder pads. She also wore a black and white bond that had a spade projection. Adam wore armour that was several shades of white and blue with a white furry collar. “Looks like you’re not the only one with a new look.” Crow noted as the two Guardians entered. “Yeah.” Rae laughed, rubbing the back of her neck, “I figured since I’m the Stasis Vanguard now, I should look like it.”
Crow turned to Adam, “And you?”
“Everyone was getting new looks, and I didn’t want to feel left out.” Adam shrugged. “Suuuure. It TOTALLY isn’t to impress a certain Awoken in the Dreaming City or anything.” Blaze chuckled. “Hardy har.” Adam rolled his eyes. Rae laughed at the two’s banter before turning to Crow, “So, you ready to go?”
“Almost. Osiris wanted to meet me before I arrive.” Crow replied, “Said he had something to give me.”
Rae nodded in understanding, “We’ll meet you in the Tower courtyard then. See you starside, Guardian.”
“See you starside.”
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What do you think Osiris wanted to give Crow?”
Rae stood in the courtyard with her Fireteam and the rest of the Vanguard. “If I had to make a guess…” Ikora gave a small smirk, “A lengthy lecture on the importance of being a Guardian.”
“That tracks!” Rae giggled. “Ikora had to get it from somewhere!” Cayde added, earning a laugh from Blaze. Ikora glared at Cayde and Blaze, who ducked behind Adam for protection from any potential incoming nova bombs.
“Oh helvete nej! I am not being your meat shield!” Adam walked away from the cowering Hunters.
“H-hey! What happened to Titans protecting others?” Cayde stammered.
“Not from angry Ikoras! I doubt even Shaxx would stand in the way of Ikora when she’s angry.”
“VERY TRUE!!” Shaxx yelled from the other side of the courtyard.
As the group continued their banter, Blaze noticed a figure emerge from the hangar entrance walking towards them. There was Crow, now wearing a short black and white cloak with a white crow displayed on it. Under it, his usual black scale-like armour was now white along with matching boots and now wore grey trousers. “How do I look?” Crow asked as he approached Blaze. “Like a true Hunter.” She smiled. Zavala stepped forward, “Welcome to the Tower, Guardian.”
“Thank you. I won’t let you down.” Crow nodded.
“Well before we do anything…” Cayde began, a serious tone to his voice, “There’s one important thing we need to do.”
“True, true.” Blaze agreed. “W-what? What’s wrong?” Crow asked, glancing between the two Hunters with concern.
“…INITIATION!!!” Cayde and Blaze yelled in unison as they both grabbed the arms of a very confused Crow and began leading him towards Tower’s Spicy Ramen. “We better go make sure they don’t cause trouble.” Rae chuckled. “I feel like that’s always a given when it comes to those two.” Ikora replied as she began walking back to her post.
 The rest of the evening was spent at Spicy Ramen, celebrating Crow joining the ranks of the Guardians. Crow still thought the noodles looked like worms but eventually gave in after some peer pressure from Blaze and Cayde and ended up enjoying it. They shared stories of their own embarrassing Kinderguardian moments, from Cayde falling off a cliff moments after his first revival to Paralight getting caught in a Benny Hills-style case with two minotaurs and a flock of harpies on Venus after running out of ammo while their Ghosts continued their scan. They also told stories of their greatest victories such as Adam’s infamous swordfight with Crota after Rae and Blaze were downed. Blaze and Crow joined in by telling them about how they both fended off Savathûn’s forces while trying to restore Hawkmoon. Slowly, Crow felt the anxiety of arriving at the Tower wash away. He knew there would still be Guardians who would hate him for his past self’s mistakes, despite what the Vanguard would say to them. He knew of the possible dangers awaiting him with the Darkness looming throughout the system. He knew of the certain chaos running with this trio of misfits would bring. But right now, he didn’t care. In that moment, he was surrounded by friends – his friends – laughing and sharing stories together. They knew of what his old self did, he could see it in their eyes, yet they still accepted him for who he was now. He knew who he was. And he knew who he would always be.
A Hunter.
A Guardian.
 Crow.
 End of Season of the Hunt.
Movie Review | Mulholland Drive (Lynch, 2001)
Tumblr media
This review contains spoilers.
David Lynch's Mulholland Drive was released in recent years by the Criterion Collection, that great home video company that's probably the OG of boutique labels, known for putting out acclaimed, significant or otherwise interesting films in really nice packages. (For some reason I had been thinking they put this out only last year until I actually looked it up. I guess my sense of time has been a little warped as of late, and as much as I'd like to tie this review into pandemic-era life, the fact is other labels have captured my attention lately, as can be evidenced by my embarrassingly large and extremely shameful Vinegar Syndrome haul from their Halfway to Black Friday sale from a few months ago.) Now, nobody in 2021 is going into this movie truly blind, but if I happened to pick up the Criterion cover and perused the back, aside from the list of special features and disc specs, you'd see the below (which I grabbed off their website):
Blonde Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia (Laura Harring). Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project. David Lynch’s seductive and scary vision of Los Angeles’s dream factory is one of the true masterpieces of the new millennium, a tale of love, jealousy, and revenge like no other.
Now, this is a tough movie to evoke with only a blurb, but I'd say that does a pretty respectable job. I however do not own this release. What I do own is the barebones Universal DVD that was released a few months after the movie, back when going into the movie blind would have been far more likely. This is the description on the back:
This sexy thriller has been acclaimed as one of the year's best films. Two beautiful women are caught up in a lethally twisted mystery - and ensnared in an equally dangerous web of erotic passion. "There's nothing like this baby anywhere! This sinful pleasure is a fresh triumph for Lynch, and one of the best films of the year. Visionary daring, swooning eroticism and colors that pop like a whore's lip gloss!" says Rolling Stone's Peter Travers. "See it… then see it again!" (Time Out New York)
Now, the previous description probably couldn't fully capture the movie's essence, but this one makes it sound like an erotic thriller. (Could you imagine somebody going into this thinking this was like a Gregory Dark joint? I say this having seen none of his thrillers and only his hardcore movies, although I must admit an MTV-influenced Mulholland Drive starring, say, Lois Ayres is something I find extremely intriguing.) But you know what? Good for them. Among other things, this movie, with its two all-timer sex scenes, feels like one of the last hurrahs from an era when mainstream American movies could be unabashedly horny, before we were sentenced to an endless barrage of immaculately muscular bodies in spandex (stupid sexy Flanders) somehow drained of all sex appeal (god forbid somebody pop a boner...or ladyboner, let's be egalitarian here). I apologize if I'm coming off as a little gross, but having been able to barely leave the house for practically a year and a half, watching sexy movies like this is one of the few remaining thrills at my disposal. Please, this is all I have.
Now I suppose I should say something about the movie itself, but it might be a challenge given how elusive it is in certain respects (Lynch is notoriously cagey about offering interpretations of his movies) and, as a result, how heavily it's been scrutinized over the years. No doubt any analysis I offer as to the movie's overarching meaning will come off extremely dumbassed. What I will note however, is that for whatever reason, the scene I remembered most vividly is where Justin Theroux walks in on his wife with Billy Ray Cyrus, particularly the candy pink paint he dumps on her jewellery as revenge. We've been following Theroux, a movie director, as he's been having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, having had control over casting his lead actress taken from him, which he proceeds to process by taking a golf club to a windshield of his producers' car and then reacting as above when he finds his wife with the singer of "Achy Breaky Heart".
With his Dune having been notoriously tampered with by producers, I suspect there's a bit of Lynch's own experience in the scene with the producers, which plays like an entirely arbitrary set of rituals deciding the fate of his movie with no regard for his opinion or even basic logic. While I don't know how particular Dino DeLaurentiis was about his espresso, I did laugh. Now, taking the reading that the first two acts of the movie are a fantasy of Naomi Watts' character, who is revealed to be miserable and ridden with jealousy in the third act, the amount of time we spend with Theroux is maybe hard to justify. Is this perhaps her "revenge" on him, his romantic and professional success having been flushed away while he flounders in search of greater meaning to his arc? Aside from possible autobiographical interest, these scenes do play like a riff on the idea that everyone is the main character in their own story, and if the Watts and Laura Harring characters can be thought of as having merged or swap identities, then perhaps Theroux's arc is the remainder of that quotient. (Now, it's worth noting that aside from being insecure and arrogant, Theroux in this movie is a less stylish than the real Lynch. If Watts conjures the best version of herself in her dream, Lynch maybe doesn't want his dream avatar outshining him.)
Now why did the Cyrus scene stick with me all these years when other details had slipped? Mostly because I'd found it amusing, partly because of the extra specific image Lynch produces, and somewhat because of the casting of Billy Ray Cyrus. Now, I don't have any special relationship to the Cyrus' body of work, but Lynch's casting of him, with his distinct mix of bozo, dudebro and hunk, results in a very specific comedic effect. This is something Lynch does elsewhere in the movie, like when he has Robert Forster show up as a detective for a single scene. The Forster role is likely in part a leftover from the movie's origins as a TV pilot, but the effect is similar (albeit less comedic). Melissa George appears as a woman who may or may not be a replacement for Watts in some realm of reality. Other directors obviously cast actors for their screen presence and the audience's relationship to their career, but the way Lynch does it feels particularly pointed, as if he's reshaping them entirely into iconography. The effect is particularly sinister with the presence of Michael J. Anderson, with whom he worked previously on Twin Peaks, and Monty Montgomery as a mysterious cowboy who dangles the secret of the movie over Theroux's character.
Cowboys in movies are frequently heroic presences (see any number of westerns) and are otherwise innocuously stylish (I confess I've come dangerously close to ordering a Stetson hat and a pair of cowboy boots), but the presence of one here feels like a ripple in the movie's reality. A dreamy, brightly lit mystery set in Los Angeles should have no place for a cowboy. It ain't right. (It's worth noting that Lynch at one point copped to admiring Ronald Reagan for reminding him of a cowboy. Is this his expression of a changed opinion? I have no idea, but Lynch has never struck me as all that politically minded.) Neither is the hobo that appears behind the diner. Certainly hobos have made their homes behind diners, but this one's presence and the way Lynch produces him feel again like a ripple in the the movie's narrative. Jump scares are frequently knocked for being lazy and cheap devices to generate shocks, but the one here gets under your skin.
Now about the movie's look. This starts off like a noir, and the mystery plot on paper would lead you to think that's how the whole movie plays, but the cinematography is a lot brighter, with almost confection-like colours, than that would lead you to believe, at least during the daytime scenes. This is another element that likely comes from its TV origins, but it does give the movie a distinctly dreamlike, fantastical quality that a more overtly cinematic look, like the one Lynch used in Lost Highway a few years earlier, might not capture. This is one of the reasons I think this movie works better than that one, and there's also the fact that the amateur sleuthing that drives the bulk of the plot here serves as a more pleasing audience vantage point than the male anxieties that fuel the other film. I also would much rather hang out with Naomi Watts and Laura Harring than a charisma void like Balthazar Getty.
The manufactured warmth of the daytime scenes also results, like in Blue Velvet, in the nighttime scenes feeling like they're in a completely different setting, one which perhaps offers the key to unlocking the mystery, or at least revealing the phoniness of the movie's surfaces. I think of the evocative Club Silencio sequence, which comes as close as anything in the movie to laying its illusions bare. ("No hay banda.") But at times Lynch will throw in disarmingly childlike, inexplicable imagery, like the dancing couples against a purple screen in the opening, something that would seem tacky and amateurish elsewhere but feels oddly cohesive here. There are a number of directors whose work I admire for being "dreamlike", and putting them side by side they all feel quite distinct (you would never mistake a Lucio Fulci film for a Lynch), but they have the unifying idea of imbuing the tactile qualities of film with the truly irrational to really burrow into your subconscious. Other directors have made movies with some of the same elements as Mulholland Drive, but none have put them together in quite the same way.
Fic Prompts: Free Day Thursday
(A little My Hero Academia fun for the new year. It's a loose continuation of this one.)
The announcement that the retired Symbol of Peace was adopting a child set the press into a frenzy few could match. Finding out it was one of his second year students took that frenzy and boosted it to truly alarming levels for a little while. It was probably for the best that the UA Barrier had been replaced with a force field in the wake of Shigaraki's last, disastrous attack.
Inko had all but permanently moved into the teachers' dorms, to avoid harrassment via paparazzi at her apartment. This had not, unfortunately, gotten rid of the rumors.
"Miss Inko, I'm done! I did all the letters- oops."
Inko looked up to see the former head of the League of Villains, now a six year old boy courtesy of Eri's quirk overloading, holding up a handful of dust. With Eraserhead's help, Tenko had improved greatly in controlling his quirk. And Eri, as his self-proclaimed Big Sister, was usually there to reverse any damage he inadvertently caused to people. Homework, however, she couldn't save.
"You got excited and forgot to watch your fingers, huh?" Inko asked sympathetically. "It's alright, everyone has accidents sometimes."
Inko still wasn't sure how she'd ended up being Eri and Tenko's tutor, but at least it kept her from getting stir-crazy here in UA. Oh, she was delighted to be able to see her son so often, and Toshinori had made her feel very welcome. She just would've liked to be a little more active without the press following her to ask questions about All Might.
A familiar set of footsteps, thumping their way up the stairs, distracted Inko for a moment. "Oh," she said, "That sounds like Izuku."
"Cousin Deku's coming?" Tenko gasped, brightening. (No one had figured out yet why the rewound ex-villain was so adamant that Izuku was his cousin, but he refused to be swayed on the matter.) "Eri, Eri! Deku's coming to visit!"
Sure enough, the second year himself appeared in the doorway moments later, and was immediately swarmed by the six and seven year olds.
"Deku, Deku, come play!" Eri laughed, clinging to his arm.
"Mr. Torino got us Mario Kart!" Tenko added, "And I didn't even break the controller! You gotta play it with us!"
"You gotta!" Eri nodded, "You were interning forever and ever! We missed you!"
Izuku grinned and crouched to ruffle Tenko's hair. There was a phone cradled between his ear and shoulder that neither child had noticed at first.
"Oops. Sorry," Eri said in a slightly guilty tone. She elbowed Tenko, and he parroted her apology.
"It's alright," Izuku reassured them, "I'm actually just passing the phone off to my mom."
He held the phone out with a smirk. "It's Hisashi, Mom. You forgot to give him your new number."
"Oh nuts, you're right!" Inko groaned. She took the phone and shuffled away to speak to her ex-husband.
She had to hold the phone away from her ear slightly as Hisashi's excited voice squawked loudly over the line.
"Inko! You didn't tell me you were dating All Might!!"
"Well, I-" Inko flushed bright red. "That's not e- exactly what-"
"I mean, dang, when we split I know I told you to trade up, but HOLY CRAP, INKO!"
"I-it's not-"
Oh dear. Hisashi was too full of fanboy energy to hear what Inko was saying. Wouldn't be the first time.
"You went after the Symbol of Peace! And you landed him so hard he's adopting Izuku? Freaking legendary, Inko. You're my freakin' hero. Do you even realize how many bragging points this gives me at work?"
"Noooo, 'Sashiiiii!" Inko groaned, dropping her face into her palm, "Too many people know already!"
"So, so, so, c'mon, spill! What's it like co-parenting with All Might? I mean, logically he's gotta be better suited to parenthood than me. He's got that "everyone's dad" energy, y'know?"
Eventually Inko was just too embarrassed to talk, and handed the phone back to Izuku.
"Mom's in sweater town now," he said matter-of-factly.
Hisashi snickered on the other end of the line. "My bad. Hey, 'Zu, there's a Guild of Legends tournament coming up this weekend. You in?"
Izuku ran over the date in his mind until he'd confirmed that he didn't have anything going on.
"Sure! See you online, Hisashi."
"Later, dude."
Eri wrinkled her nose in confusion. "I thought Mr. Hisashi was your other dad?" she asked, "How come you call him by his name?"
Izuku shrugged. "Because he asked me to. He hasn't lived with us since I was really really little. So when he and Mom split up, he said it made more sense for me to treat him like a fun uncle." He paused. "Which he totally is. Almost every video game I own came from him. He likes to play online co-op with me."
He didn't seem to notice his mother off to the side, still mortified. "They're talking about it on I-Island now?" she groaned, "We're never going to live this down! Oh dear, I need to call Toshi. Does he know about this?"
Tenko tugged Izuku's sleeve and pointed to Inko. "Ohh," he said, "Is that where you get the mumble thing?"
hi maggie! congrats on finishing the first draft of quincy willows! hope you don't mind but i was actually hoping on getting some writing advice. do you have any tips on how to write a change of scene? i struggle a lot when i'm writing a scene and the next one is supposed to be some time after, even if it's on a new chapter. i don't want to be all "and a few days later...". i guess that what i'm asking is for tips on how to make smooth transitions. thanks in advance!
hi there writing friend!! so sorry it took me literally like three weeks to answer this -- i’ve been chewing on it because i want to give you like a good helpful answer and sometimes the brain is just Not Cooperating, you know? lmao. but i think i can tackle it now!
so i think the biggest tip in this sort of case is actually more a mental state than anything to do with your actual writing. i think we as writer’s can get very precious and obsessive about our own work and we then end up overthinking everything (including, as you’re asking about, transitions). believe me, i feel this kind of thing too and know exactly what you’re talking about. however, i think part of the key is sort of training yourself to remember that readers are smarter than we think they are. in fact, we ourselves are readers more often than not! so think about it -- do you spend a lot of time while reading a work of fiction stuck on transitions between time? do you find yourself overthinking the way other writer’s transition? i won’t assume for you, of course, but i would bet you’re far less critical of this sort of thing when you’re reading rather than writing it for yourself, which is totally natural but perhaps can help you not worry so much about it in your own work. readers are smart -- if you lead and at least give some semblance of the passage of time in your story, they will follow!!
in terms of ways to open sections rather than just sort of focusing on how much time has passed, i think i tend to gravitate towards snappy sort of declarative sentences. they’re usually one-liners, and they hone in on the specific emotion or action that is happening in that moment in time. it orients the reader to this new time we’re focusing on, without (ideally) drawing so much attention to the transition.
pulling from all the lonely people, here are a few examples of ways to signal the passing of time without literally stating the obvious (these are between sections, emphasis added):
Riley has never liked talking about herself. But it’s a new day, in a new place. She’s in a place where she can breathe again, light with the knowledge of it and waiting for her enigma boy to wake up so they can greet a new day. All that considered, talking about herself doesn’t seem like such a tall order.
And so she does.
...
Riley doesn’t even realize how long she chats with Rachel, ingesting another cup of decaf and watching the sun rise to its full height and beam across the green lawn outside the window. As the conversation stretches on the rapport between them becomes comfortable, effortless. She learns quickly how funny her host is and can’t help but laugh loudly, only remembering to stay quiet for Lucas’s sake the first couple of times.
that’s an example of just a few hours passing, without being overly specific about it. it’s signaled through imagery, an action occurring (the drinking of coffee and conversation), and even the mention but indistinct passage of time.
let me grab a larger jump in time or a different method. atlp isn’t the best example for this, since it really is quite linear and doesn’t have many time jumps since it’s taking course in the span of about three weeks (lmao @ me), so i pulled this one from helpless:
It’s humiliating, how much of those crumbled up scraps of paper are dedicated to musings over a boy who he won’t even talk to. Being a student at AAA is challenging, but being a perfectionist, internally dramatic gay freshman with crippling anxiety is its own level of hell.
...
Asher doesn’t even consider the notion of their paths ever crossing until it’s forced upon him, thanks to an accidental lapse in judgment with the most unpredictable character to enter his life since stepping into the halls of Adams two weeks earlier.
in that case, i think the passage of time is sort of vaguely alluded to just in like... the logical passing of time LMAO but then the time change (two weeks earlier) is tacked on at the end, so it doesn’t feel as noticeable. also the focus (the terror and wonder of meeting dylan orlando lol) is on what asher is feeling rather than the literal passage of time. does that make sense?
HOWEVER, i really do think it’s okay to kick off with a passage of time, especially if the time passing is not that far apart. even just searching for examples in my work for this ask, i realize i do it myself quite often. i.e., in helpless just one transition later:
Their teacher gets back to his feet before Lucas can respond either way, leaving him even more uncertain than before. Asher growls and slaps the back of his snapback, causing Lucas to snort before turning it into a cough into his elbow.
Every day, Asher becomes more and more certain he’s not going to survive four years.
...
After a couple of days of existing in a constant state of dread, Asher begins to relax when Lucas’s vague playful threat doesn’t seem to hold any water. Sure, he feels like the title character in a slasher flick and that any time he turns the corner his friend is going to be standing there with a knife in the form of forced interaction, but that moment never comes and eventually Asher has to conclude that Lucas was only teasing him.
so if you’ve read my work, i guarantee you’ve seen me do this too and it probably didn’t jump out to you then. am i right? i really do think it comes back to that notion of just being more critical of your own writing than reading others, so it may be less of a problem than you think it is.
but if you do feel concerned about it, then hopefully some of my tips above might help in some way! i think the most important thing to think about is what other things are changing with the passage of time (feelings!!, thoughts, actions, etc.) that can disguise the signal of it without it just feeling outright. hopefully that makes sense.
happy writing!! sending good creative vibes your way, and thanks for your patience :)
Right Now ... Superstore Amy/Jonah fanfic
"So,.. So,.. So. So. So."
Jonah was perhaps not the best at breaking tension or even starting conversations for that matter.
"Hmm?" Amy raised an eyebrow at him as he awkwardly walked up to where she was busy restocking a shelf of lightbulbs.
"So, yeah, so, ...Not that it matters,.. But, um, ...just out of curiosity… When exactly was your … um, crush...on me?"
"Oh." Amy blinked in surprise at the question. She wasn't expecting to have to answer this. "Ah, um, well…" Her mind raced with how to answer, but lying or thinking fast on her feet like this, wasn't really her forte. "Ah, well, geez… It was around when,... Like, you know,.. More or less,.. Around when… like, now." Amy blinked back in surprise that she had said it, but then decided if she said it, she had to just own it. "Yeah, so like, now. Around basically, right now." Yep, totally owning it. She ended with what she hoped was a casual confident nod.
Jonah stared wide eyed back at her, he stuffed his hands in his pockets and leaned back in an attempt to also look casual. "Oh,.. now?" He blinked and then it sort of seemed to hit him a little harder as he suddenly looked intensely around the lightbulb aisle, as if Amy's crush was a physical thing that could jump out of nowhere and attack him. "Right now? As in… now? Not like, in the past…ancient history... but like.. Currently? Current events? Now?"
"Yeeeah," Amy shrugged in an overly casual way, immediately regretting everything. She went back to stocking lightbulbs, mostly to avoid awkward eye contact. "But it totally doesn't matter, right? Because I mean, look at me! I just went through a divorce, my life is so... complicated, I'm basically a hot mess right now. I'm not even thinking straight, ...probably?! I don't even know what I want. I slept with Tate, for goodness sake!"
"Um riiiight!" Jonah started nodding, but far too quickly to be considered normal or casual. "Yeah, you did…um,..sleep with that guy. And, also… Also! I'm… I'm with .. um.. I'm with…"
"Kelly" Amy chimed in.
"Obviously! I'm obviously with Kelly, so that is so obvious it doesn't even need to be said… And so, yeah. Yeah, it doesn't matter because I'm with Kelly…" His voice faded at the end and a quiet pensive look fell over his face.
"Right!" Amy tried to sound cheerful and confident, but she just wanted Jonah to leave her alone and for this awkward conversation to end. In fact, she wanted for this topic of conversation to just go away and never be addressed again. "And you and Kelly are like, the perfect match! So, things are all… good. All good."
"Yeah…" Jonah blinked and then his pensive look fell away and he looked directly at Amy, "Um,.. you think? You think,.. We're like the perfect ..match?"
"Ah, yeah!" Amy tried being enthusiastic, but she was starting to feel herself fade. "You and Kelly are like .. you know.. Meant to be. She's all like.. You know. And you, you are just like… and together,.. It's just…. It's just great." Her voice fell a little flat, so much for enthusiastic.
"Uh, huh.. Yeah." Jonah was nodding again with a far away look on his face, "Solid. That's… solid logic. Makes total sense. Me and Kelly. Yep."
Jonah just kept standing there and nodding.
"Just break up with Kelly already so you two can bone!" Dina's voice broke the tension as she walked by briskly with her clipboard and a Team Amy t-shirt.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
She likes me. She likes me, like has a crush on me, likes me. Like, right now. Right now, she likes me...
"What are you grinning to yourself about over there?" Kelly's voice interrupted Jonah's thoughts.
"Ooh," Jonah looked up in surprise from the box of books he was packing. Kelly was over at his place, well.. Garrett's place. She was helping him pack, because no big deal, he was moving in with her.
"Just looking at my books and smiling at, um… all the stories. Stories are great." Jonah answered, like a dork. He tried smiling as he realized now dorky he sounded.
"Ooh, I know a really great story, about a boy and a girl who met at a store…" Kelly smiled coyly over at him while she packed his forks and knives. "And then they fell in love."
"Well, actually I think she hated him a bit, at first." Jonah responded and smiled a bit to himself as he placed another book in the box.
"What? No I didn't. I thought you were totally cute." Kelly raised an eyebrow at him.
"Oh, yeah.. No?" Jonah suddenly realized his mistake and tried to fix it, "You didn't, like… think I was annoying? Like I was.. You know.. Useless?"
"What? No." Kelly stopped packing the box of utensils and looked over at him in confusion. "Who would ever think that you were useless?!"
"Uh, some people might…" Jonah trailed off and tried to look very interested in packing books.
"Some people? Some people like, Amy?" Kelly walked over and sat herself on the floor by the box of books so that Jonah would look at her.
"Eh.. no? I don't know…. Blah. Who even cares what Amy thinks?"
"You, you do."
"No… that's ridiculous."
"Is it?"
"Yes…"
"Jonah! I'm not an idiot, you clearly like Amy! Do you even want to be with me? Do you seriously want to move in together?"
Jonah was surprised at how serious Kelly looked. He wanted to say no. He wanted to confess he couldn't stop thinking about Amy. He wanted to storm out of there and just go confront Amy about her feelings….his feelings. He wanted to confess everything. But Kelly just looked so serious.
Jonah gulped, "Of course I want to be with you and live with you. We.. we are the perfect match, you and me."
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Oh, you guys are like the perfect match! Like totally meant to be! Omg, it's all so perfect...
Amy was driving home reliving the day over in her mind.
Who even says 'perfect match' ?! What was that?! So gross and weird. Gross.
But Amy sighed, she did need to acknowledge that Jonah and Kelly were together. And Kelly was.. Well, fine, Kelly was sweet. And plus this wasn't junior high. They were all adults in an adult workplace. No one was going to be stealing anyone elses boyfriend.
Unless that boyfriend wanted to be stolen...
"No, but he doesn't" Amy grumbled outloud as she pulled into the driveway of the house she now lived in alone. Well, her daughter lived there too. Sometimes. Half the time. The other half of the time she was alone. Like tonight. Like right now. All alone.
At first it had been horrible, being alone. All her thoughts racing while every emotion ran through her. She barely slept in the beginning. She had ping ponged back and forth from being intensely angry at Adam to missing him with every inch of her body. Every single thought and feeling she'd ever had for Adam filling her mind constantly. But then she slowly stopped thinking about him so much, and now she barely thought of him at all. Except when she had to, co-parenting and all that.
It's funny how time changes things...
Amy threw herself on the couch, of the house that was now her own. And instead she thought about someone else…and tried not to feel pathetic about it.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"So,.. pretty pathetic that Amy has a crush on me, huh?" Jonah leaned on the counter next to Garrett.
"What? No. I'm not playing this game." Garrett scrunched his face up at Jonah.
"Game? What? No.. I'm just saying.." Jonah trailed off as he adjusted his not-so-casual lean.
"Uh-uh. No. You are playin' that you think it's pathetic she has a crush on you, so that no one will catch on that you totally have a crush on her as well. Not like, a million years ago when you started working here, but now. Still. You've always had a crush on her. But you are dating that Kelly chick, and you don't have the balls to call things off. So instead you are playing this, Amy is so pathetic, game. But, it's you. You are pathetic. PA-THE-TIC."
Jonah looked deflated. "Uhhh… no. That's… wrong." He looked away completely thrown off by how accurate Garrett was. Damnit. He was pathetic. So pathetic.
"Please. You've gots the hots for Amy. You have since you met her. You don't really like Kelly, you should of ended things with her back when she said she believed in angels. Angels, Jonah. Angels! But you have no balls. The answer is right in front of you. End things with Kelly and give things a go with Amy. But will you? Probably not, because you are pathetic."
"Uuuuugh" Jonah let himself crumble onto the counter next to Garrett. "Damnit Garrett!"
"Hey, I'm basically the Yoda of this place, I speak the truth."
"Ahhh…" Jonah covered his face with his hands, "It's annoying."
"Pathetic, you are. Grow balls, you must."
Jonah couldn't help himself, he laughed at Garrett's Yoda impression.
"Damnit, Garrett"
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"If you want me to help you,...get rid of Kelly,... I will."
Amy looked up alarmed from the bottle of bleach she was price checking, "Wh- What?"
Sandra was standing there in her Team Amy t-shirt, looking… intense.
"Sandra…" Amy sighed, "No. Please. Just take off the shirt. And please, please, please leave Kelly alone."
Sandra looked like a lost puppy in need of a home, "But, I.. I can help."
"No, please. But, there is a clean up in aisle 5 if you really want to help, just do your job, please"
Sandra stomped off quietly.
Amy shook her head. All she wanted was to escape away into her thoughts, maybe go home later and play video games. She wanted things to be easy. Of course, that's why she took this job all those years ago anyways, and why she married Adam as well. It seemed like it would make things easy, simple and easy. But nothing has ever been simple and easy. Of course, she had to admit when she spent time with Jonah, that felt easy. Well, it use to. Now it was all ruined and awkward. Nothing was easy.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"But it's just not that easy!" Jonah groaned, "Amy just went through a divorce. She said so herself, her life is complicated. Maybe she doesn't even really like me. Maybe it's just like.. Oh hey, I'm single, who are some men that I know? Oh Jonah is a man.."
"Is he?" Garrett cracked a grin.
"Yes. I am." Jonah tried standing a little taller before crumpling onto the counter again, "You know what I mean. She might just be testing the 'having a crush' waters. It might not really be a thing."
"Oh, it's a thing. It's obviously a thing. She's into you, like, everyone can tell. Everyone knows."
"What? Everyone..." Jonah looked completely befuddled before shaking his head and continuing, "Well, she might not know what she wants. She might not be ready for anything at all. And Kelly is ready to move in with me!"
"Terrible idea."
"It's.. not a bad idea. She's sweet and supportive."
"Come on, man. Why are you trying to argue your way out of this? Kelly is a crazy chick who believes in angels and Amy is.. Well, she's kinda crazy too. But you are never gonna be happy with Kelly if you are always wondering about Amy. Plain and simple."
"Damnit, Garrett."
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Jonah, I need you to go help Amy in housewares, we've got a pillow emergency. And I know you two wanna bone, so please don't be lured by the sexiness of the pillow display. But if you do decide to bone in the store, please use discretion"
Dina walked off again, brisk as ever.
Jonah sighed. Great.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Dina said you needed- ah, I see."
The entire pillow section of the store was on the floor.
"Apparently some playful kids thought it would be fun to make a fort.. Or an igloo.. Or something.." Amy looked exhausted as she started placing the pillows back on the shelves.
Jonah felt a tugging at his heart strings and immediately got to work helping out.
They didn't talk. It felt tense. Amy didn't want a repeat of yesterday's awkwardness and Jonah just couldn't think of a single thing that made any sense to say out loud.
So they quietly picked up pillows and placed them on shelves. At one point they made eye contact and Jonah smiled, Amy returned it. The tension didn't go away. They reached for the same pillow at another point, they laughed meekly. The tension didn't go away. Their arms brushed against each other. Their breath caught in their throats. The tension didn't go away. They fluffed and placed pillows. They tried to avoid physical contact. They failed. Multiple times. They kept laughing meekly. The tension didn't go away.
"I didn't know." Finally Jonah blurted out.
"Excuse me?" Amy replied, confused.
"I,.. I didn't know. About your crush, I mean. Apparently everyone else knew.. But I didn't know. How could I of.. How could I of known…"
"Um,... well. I kissed you. That probably.. You know.. Should of given you an idea… maybe?" Amy stammered in response.
"Yeah,.. But. It was the storm, we thought we might die, you were scared."
"Oh come on Jonah. You think if I'd been sitting next to Mateo or Garrett or Dina, that I would of kissed them just because I was scared?!" Amy threw her hands up, she was getting into 'mom voice' territory but… seriously? "Of course the kiss meant that I liked you. I like you. Don't let it go to your head or anything. It's just a crush and it doesn't mean anything anyways, like we discussed yesterday."
"And you were married when you kissed me, so... "
"Please my marriage was over well before I kissed you. I just did not want to admit. I also didn't want to admit that I liked you. I'm lots of fun, like that." Amy said rolling her eyes.
Jonah snickered slightly at that. But he just stared at her. He could hear Garrett's voice in his mind.
"I'm fun… too." Jonah mumbled.
"Huh?"
Jonah cleared his throat and looked at her, "I'm.. fun like that, too."
"What?" Amy plopped a lacy pillow onto the shelf next to her and turned to Jonah, "What do you mean?"
"I also can't admit things…" Jonah tried to lean on a pillow next to him, but it was fluffier than he expected and stumbled a bit before continuing, "Like,.. I can't admit that.. I like sugary cereals… and Lifetime movies,... and I like.. Uganda."
"What? You like Uganda? That's...nice.." Amy was confused and also a bit worried, was Jonah okay? … "Are you having a stroke?"
"No. No I'm.. trying to tell you that… I like...utopian societies."
"Uh-huh. Jonah, seriously, are you okay?"
"I've never been better, because.. I like...unique food pairings."
"Great. Well, this has been an enlightening conversation." Amy threw the last of the pillows onto one of the top shelves, "But it looks like we are all done here. So I'm gonna leave you to contemplate .. unique food pairings...in private." And with that, Amy walked away.
"You. … I like you." Jonah finally whispered, alone with the pillows.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It was end of the day, the store was already closed and most employees were out already. Amy headed to the break room to grab her things, at last she could head home. But when she entered she saw Jonah standing at the sink… lovely. She wanted to avoid anymore awkward conversations so she hoped she could sneak in and out without him even noticing, but then she noticed the blood on his hand.
"Hey- Jonah, you okay?"
Jonah turned around surprised to see her, "Uh, yeah. It's just a cut. I was cleaning up some broken glass that got knocked over earlier…"
"Oh Jonah, you know you are suppose to wear gloves when picking up broken glass."
"I.. yeah.. I know, I forgot.. Um.. distracted."
"Alright," Amy sighed and opened the cabinet with the first aid kit, "Let me see."
"Oh, no, Amy,.. it's fine.. Really."
"Let me see," Amy demanded, "We can't have employees getting infected wounds from workplace injuries."
"Fine," Jonah gave in and let her take his hand, which had a gash next to his thumb. He watched as Amy, in her no nonsense way, started to tend to it. Putting on disinfectant and a band aid. She was swift, confident and also,..gentle and soothing. It reminded Jonah that Amy was also a mother. And she had this whole other side to herself that no one in the store ever really saw. This caring, gentle side. He imagined her with Emma as a baby, she was probably a really sweet mom. He was so lost in these thoughts about Amy, he didn't realize that subconsciously he had started to gently rub his thumb against hers.. But then he felt Amy freeze.
"Uh, Jonah... " She took her hands away from his, "All done." And she turned quickly away from him to return the first aid kit.
Jonah felt a terrible sadness rise up in him, he couldn't help it, the next words came tumbling out of him, "I wouldn't have started dating her, if I knew."
Jonah felt an immense shame wash over him, he was a terrible boyfriend.
Amy turned to look at him after shutting the cabinet. "But you did," She stated simply, "And you are happy, right? Why does it matter?"
Jonah hesitated, he didn't have answers. Did he? He didn't know anymore.
"Please Jonah, let's just let the whole crush and kiss thing go. Just let it go. We don't need to talk about it anymore. We don't need to do this." She then grabbed her things and left.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"We don't need to do this." Kelly was shaking her head as Jonah was stacking boxes.
"No, see this makes sense… I've alphabetize my belongings.. And-"
"No, Jonah… we don't need to do ..THIS." Kelly waved her hands around, "All of this."
"..Oh." Jonah paused and held his breath momentarily. "I.. I thought you wanted this."
"Sure.." Kelly shrugged, "I mean, of course. But… Well, I've been talking to my angels all week and they have made me see that this isn't your path and it's not mine either."
"Your… angels?" Jonah couldn't help respond skeptically.
"Yes, my angels. See? Jonah, we not on the same page here. You think I'm just this silly person, but this is my life too. I don't want to ruin it by letting you make a wrong decision."
"Wow, Kelly… that's mature." Jonah looked at the ground, why was everyone more mature than him lately.
"Also, you need to figure out your feelings for Amy, because that's so unresolved, it's this terrible weight on your shoulders. And I don't want to live with that as well."
"Y-Yes…" Jonah stuttered, "I'm beginning to realize that too…"
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Jonah was sitting on the floor putting his books back on his bookshelf. He wasn't moving in with Kelly. They'd spent an hour having a long conversation. Kelly was lovely. Sweet and supportive. In a way, he wished he could love her. For someone, she was the right person. That person would be lucky, but he realized that person was not him. And his person,.. His person was someone else.
I won't be happy if I'm always wondering...
Jonah knew what he needed to do. Grow balls, he must. But,.. could he?
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Jonah, could you?"
"Wha-what?" Jonah realized he hadn't been listening.
"Could you please take care of 'go backs' today?" Amy was trying to hand him a shopping basket full of merchandise.
"Oh.. yeah" He meekly took it and then looked up at her, and then… "Kelly and I broke up." He blurted out.
"Ohh.." Amy looked very taken aback.
And then a louder gasp and "ooooh" rose up around him as he realized all the other employees standing nearby heard him as well. Jonah blushed, damnit, why was he always so awkward. The heckling immediately started from the others;
"Betcha wish you could 'go back' in time on that relationship, huh Jonah?!"
"Now you can 'go back' to crushing on Amy full time, Jonah!"
"No 'go-ing back' now, It's the Amy and Jonah express lane!"
"Eh, very funny guys…" Jonah took his basket of 'go backs' and tried to steal one last look at Amy but she was busy rolling her eyes at the others.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Erm,.. sorry about you and Kelly. Breakups are tough." Amy looked over at Jonah, they were in the back room re-organizing. It was the first time they'd been alone since Jonah's awkward announcement.
"Eh, thanks. I mean, it's not like a divorce.. That's tough. This.. this is just weird." Jonah responded flatly.
"Yeeah." Was all that Amy could think to say.
"It wasn't… right. Not because of you.. But-"
"Oh yeah, no!" Amy quickly interrupted, "Of course not, it wasn't because of me. I wouldn't ever assume that."
"Ye-Yeah. But, I mean.. It's not like you weren't a factor-"
"Oh. Well. I'm glad I could help contribute to breaking the heart of your very sweet girlfriend.." Amy sarcastically interrupted this time.
"Oh, no. It wasn't like that. I mean, it was going to happen anyways. And since it DID happen…" Jonah turned to her expectantly and tried to smile, but Amy was just glaring at him.
"And what? You want me as a second choice? If you can't have sweet Kelly, maybe Amy will do?" Amy was clearly angry now and throwing her hands up in the air.
"Ohh,.. no…I just mean.. I'm single, you are single..so the timing… and-" Jonah stumbled, this was NOT how he'd wanted this to go..
"Very romantic of you to consider me as a consolation prize, but you know what?! I think I'm good." Amy stormed out of the room, leaving behind a cloud of anger.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"Die- die- die!" Amy was yelling angrily from her couch, killing orcs or whatever in her video game, for some reason it seemed really important she beat this level tonight. Then the doorbell rang.
Weird.
She wasn't expecting anyone, maybe it was someone selling something. She hoped they'd just go away, she peeked out the window - oh. It was Jonah.
Well, I definitely don't want what he's selling...
"What? Jonah?" Amy leaned on her open door, expectantly.
Jonah wiped his hands down his pant legs several times, "Uh, Hi. Yes, hello."
"Yes Hello, to you too." Amy replied rolling her eyes.
Jonah took a deep breath and started talking quickly, before Amy could get angry at him all over again.
"You.. you aren't my second choice. I.. I lied when I said my crush on you was in the past. It was never in the past, it's never… it's never gone away. I've had this..little crush on you since the day I met you. But you were married, so.. I tried not to. But that little crush wouldn't go away. Amy.. Amy it grew and.. grew. Every girl I've dated since the day I've met you, it didn't matter. The little crush was still there, and it grew. Even with Kelly. But,.. I. I never thought I had a chance with you. You kissed me, yes, but then you never talked about it. I figured it meant nothing to you. So I tried to not think about it. Dating Kelly was helpful with that.. I just thought that I was the annoying guy at work to you. And that was all I ever would be, to you. But, if there is just a chance. Even if just a small chance that you might consider me. I can't ever be happy if I'm always wondering, what if? So... Amy. You aren't my second choice. You are my first choice, and honestly, my only choice."
"Oh," Was all that came out of Amy in response.
"Um.. do I have a chance?" Jonah fidgeted on her front stoop.
Amy held her breath and looked at Jonah. He was the annoying guy at work. But at some point, he'd turned into something more. At some point, a crush turns into something more.
"Let's find out.." Amy responded and leaned forward and kissed Jonah before she could second guess herself. But the first time she'd kissed him, during the storm, she'd felt reckless and scared. This time, she felt brave and sure.
The kiss was awkward at first. Her feet stumbling as she moved closer to him. His hands shaking just a little as he wrapped them around her. But then finding their confidence as their lips came together and then their tongues. Gently at first. Pausing a little to catch their breath. Then moving closer and holding each other a little more intensely. And slowly melting into one. It was easy. It was simple. It was right. It was now.
"Amy," Jonah breathed after slowly pulling away from her.
"Hmm?"
"I really like you."
Amy smiled, "I know. I've always known."
THE METAPHYSICAL MEANING OF EVE
From Wonderland To The Promise Land
The Bible says that the first mother was made from the rib of our first father, that G-d had made our first father complete. Then He forgot that the man had a lonely nature. Then G-d said: "Oh, I've got to make him a mate." Now, I'm not laughing at the Bible, I don't laugh at it. To tell you the truth, I respect it. But I'm giving it to you in this language so you can see the kind of childish ideas that we grown-ups have been holding on to. It says, He took a rib one rib from the man, and filled up the hole no ... it gives you the impression that it was just gouged out He's not even a good surgeon. He put the flesh that was taken out, back in its place just a patch-up job, a butcher's job—and then made the woman with this rib. What does that make the woman? It makes her a different creation from the man.
How can the Bible say, "Flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone?" How can she be flesh of his flesh, bone of his bone and she was just made from the bone? Just one bone. In the forming of human life in the womb of the mother, bones don't come first, flesh comes first. So if this woman is made from one bone she doesn't have the full value, the full human worth of the man. Right from the beginning the woman is put in an inferior image. If you don't believe that this is the trend; keep reading about the woman as her story is told from Genesis to Revelation. She becomes more and more ugly, inferior and wicked. I'll just name a few of the stars for you in the Bible: Eve, Jezebel, Delilah, Salome. We can look right into the language of the present environment and see that these evils, these destructive concepts in human ideas or in human minds are still hurting human development. They're still being preached and they're still hurting our human development. G-d gives us the most beautiful concept of the man that He creates. The man that He creates is a mind, a human mind—a rational and compassionate human mind; and from that mind is born, not a woman, but society. And the rib of the man simply tells us, in symbolism, that society was made from the man that G-d inspired called Adam in the Bible and that society had a law, a principle. Not many, but one.
The Bible says G-d made the woman from a rib of the man. Not from all of them, but from only one. This is symbolism, telling us that this generation or this genesis of the man that the Bible is telling us about is the story of the church. You may ask how can that be the story of the church when the Genesis was revealed and written long before Christ Jesus? But it was interpolated, interpretated, and changed, and reformed long after it was revealed. They formed it to speak the church doctrine, and the church doctrine says that Jesus gave only one commandment—that you should love ye one another.The scripture gives us the proper concept of man, that man should not be seen in the individual, the male or the female, or any single individual, but in the creation of society. Man should mean humanity and humanity includes both male and female; he or she is a part of a unit. The male has to mate with a female to reproduce his physical self. And the female has to mate with a male to reproduce her physical self. How can we see society as male and as female separated one from the other? And how can we think that the whole society was generated from one man called Adam? How can any sensible, intelligent people think that G-d made a man and then reached into his body and deformed that man after forming him rightly, and made a female of his rib? That looks like guesswork to me.
What do they call the tornadoes and the hurricanes—these terrible violent forces that make human beings fear for their very lives, that take away their houses and their cattle, destroy the hard earnings they have worked so hard for and built up in homes and businesses? These strong violent forces are called by the names of women. Isn't that proof that the same mentality exists. The mentality of the writer of the Bible is still existing. "Will you attack the writers of the Bible?"You don't want to see the contradiction. You don't want to see the ugliness in the Bible, so you suppress it. You push it out of your mind. But remember, every time you push something out of your mind, you're only pushing it out of your conscious mind. It goes into your subconscious and causes mental problems if the environment doesn't do something to bring about the kind of healthy change needed for you.We've been saying that G-d made man in his own image and likeness when we should have been saying that God intended humanity society to be in His image and likeness, character-wise or morally speaking. The scripture has meaning. The scripture can attract the rational mind, the logical thinker; the scripture can attract the shipbuilder, the banker, the chemist; it can attract all men if it's taken back to its original purity: if we just take off the false dress of poetry, mythology, symbolism and allegories that take us into wonderland instead of the promised land.
Community life must exist by both our excellent human form and by material development. At the base of our community problems are the religious formed habits of seeing life and the world through mythological eyes. When I say that I'm going to cross over Jordan one day, this clearly is not a religious expression. This is an expression colored or designed by the language of mythology. When I say that I'm going to a Kingdom in the skies, that's mythology; that's not pure religion. When I say that God is a Man of War, that's the language of mythology and not pure religion.When I say that G-d created man from the dust of the earth, formed him as a person, and created a mate for him with a rib taken from his body, that's the language of mythology and not pure religion. We have been given more mythology than we have been given religion, in terms of the language that we use. How can people clearly understand what religion is all about if they are using a language that is foreign to the purity of religion? They have to have a language that is consistent, that speaks clearly the word of truth that G-d revealed to His prophets.
The symbolic concepts that we have been given of first man, of first woman, of the creation, of the origin of the races, all of this is so heavily covered under mythological concepts, the beautiful symbolism of the poets, that we can't see the reality that should be influencing our lives. We don't get the beautiful language under the surface. We get socially destructive language. When you read the Bible, you read it literally, but the hints revealing the evil of the Bible are also given in it.The Bible says that a certain religious man took another man who is called Son of Man on a tour of the city to show him the extent that evil had grown in the society. He took him to the gate of the city and he told him. "Son of Man, look at the evil that these people are practicing inside the gates of this city." He took him to the courtyard of the Temple, "Look at the evil that these people are practicing right around the Temple." He said, "Come Son of Man, let me take you into the Temple." He took him into the sanctuary where there were the holiest of the holy, and there he found the abomination of abominations.
This is in the Bible, I didn't dream this up. The Bible states it, and it's not given as something that was presently existing. It's given in the Bible as a prophesy revealing what will come. And the Bible tells us of the last day; it says that the greatest evil will be in the Holy Sea. I'm not referring to the Catholic Church. It so happens that their sea is called Holy. I'm talking about the lake that God intended to be for religious life and religious development.
The Bible says that in the end that lake would be ruled by a beast. And G-d would destroy the beast in the lake by turning it into a lake of fire. Haven't our church lives been turned into a lake of fire? Wasn't it once a cool water for us to bathe in, and now it has become a lake of fire burning the conscience of the great number of Christians who are looking for high sensation, and yet calling themselves church goers? Our conscience has almost been buried six feet and left without any sign of life in it. But there is still enough light in most of the American Christian lives to feel guilt occasionally.
Those Christians who really are sincere and are giving their best to be Christians are in a lake of fire. Their conscience is not only on fire because of the sins that they're doing, but, also because many ministers and priests are just changing the role of the preacher or the priest into a role of an opportunist, preaching money,preaching song and dance. They preach whatever they think will appeal to your need for high sensation. I know there is still the good preacher. But look at him today. Even he has gone back, he has fallen.I saw in one magazine where a Catholic priest was sitting down in a meditation position before the bare-bone skull of some animal it looked like it was a donkey. He was meditating and saying that he didn't see anything wrong with a priest doing that as long as he kept his Catholic religion. How is he going to keep his Catholic religion and give himself to that kind of pagan exercise? The Catholic is supposed to be dignified. Though the atmosphere was ghostly, they've always been dignified. We've seen them bring in the bands, bring in the electronic . . . acid . . rock. Long ago the Christian churches turned themselves into bands.
You go to hear the preacher and you're wondering when he's going to preach. He comes up and says, "Amen." Amen is said when we finish something. He finishes before he starts. And then the choir begins to sing, and he just comes in to build the momentum up again. As soon as he gets the momentum up he says, "Have you got the feeling . . . have you got the feeling?" And somebody says, "Yeah." And the band starts again. I'm talking about the great majority of the churches in America.Where are we going to go if we only crave for sensation and don't want any sense? I thought that the correct definition for the human being is homo sapien thinking individual. I thought that's what separated us from apes and other creatures. If we're not going to think but give ourselves to sensation, to the influences in the air, then where will our lives be that G-d Created? Religion teaches the Christian, Muslim and Jew that God created the human being to be a thinking being.
Let's look at some of the so-called religious concepts. And they are religious concepts, but in the composition that we get them they are more concepts of fiction, fantasy, and mythology than religion. We're told that the world was made out of a void. There was nothing but water, and light rose, out of the water and formed the sun, moon and stars. This is the kind of ideas religious people have been given of the creation of the world.What kind of picture is this giving us of Almighty G-d? It's giving us a kindergarten story of Almighty G-d. Those who view G-d this way see Him with nostrils, and some Bibles show G-d with nostrils and breath coming out of His mouth flowing down to the people. If you ask most Christians how did man get on the earth, "Well, G-d made him." G-d made him from what? "The Bible says, from clay." Notice when they get in trouble it's always the Bible says. . . ." They will start off speaking from themselves, but the more trouble they get into the more they refer you to the Bible.
What Students are Saying About the Course? "This is really good course" - Ibrahim. ???? (4.5 stars rating) "Paulo is a great instructor I'm really very happy that he made Dart & Flutter course. - Ahmed. ????? (5 stars rating) " ". - Jakub. ????? (5 stars rating) " ". - Adam. ?????
