#TIME TO CRY OVER XXC!!!
ephemeralgalaxies · 1 year
Text
TLDR: this turned much longer than I was expecting but anyways I'm crying over just how prepared WWX was to push LWJ away bc he does know him and knows what will hurt him enough (and that just happens to be convincing LWJ that they can never actually understand or be important to each other -- that they should stay within their own clan/sect boundaries.
IM SOBBING. Like, at this point idek how many times I've watched (and posted about. sorry mutuals) that one scene in The Untamed where wwx reunites with lwj (and jc) 3 months after he was thrown into the burial mounds. But somehow only TODAY did I finally understand a deeper cinematic meaning behind the words wwx says to lwj that stick enough to be repeated in lwj's head after he leaves.
It's the fact that WWX tells LWJ "this is a Jiang clan business" and "who do you think you are" and "who does your Lan Clan think they are" with that lovely rift between them when they call each other by their courtesy name instead (that emotional "Wei Wuxian!" and the heartless "Lan Wangji..." hurts every time my gOd). And for so long I just thought "oh yeah, that hurts. He's saying that there's a distance between him and LWJ. Of course that would hit LWJ hard enough for him to reflect on that."
But then after (finally) analyzing the scene where they say goodbye to Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen bro it hit so much worse. Because SL tells the others that him and XXC believe more in a bond between "like minded individuals" rather than "bloodline," WWX agreeing and smiling as he claims to everyone (including his brother) that he and LWJ are the same.
SO WHEN HE RETURNS AFTER THE BURIAL MOUNDS AND TELLS LWJ THAT THIS IS A PRIVATE JIANG CLAN AFFAIR OFC IT HURTS LWJ SO MUCH BC HE'S REJECTING THEIR PREVIOUS RELATIONSHIP/EXPERIENCES "even if you don't respect our student days..." bRO YOU DID IT FIRST YOU ASSHOLE (affectionate, bc I understand why he pushed LWJ away but still)
Like, he already pushed that "how can anyone else know my temperament," using the same character (知) as is in (知己, or the Netflix translation of "(life-long) confidante" but I cry bc the meaning is so much more than that) -- OF WHICH I DIDN'T REALIZE HE'S ALREADY CALLED LWJ THAT back in Cloud Recesses when discussing the yin iron (and Netlfix's translation into "confidante" as I sob) so LWJ is already crumbling bc WWX has basically just told him that he no longer considers them as this, PLUS the added pain of "I won't even try to let you worry about me or help me or know me bc you're not my family. I'm sticking with them." ("Gusu? Why would I go to Gusu? No no no. I prefer Yunmeng" with that malicious smirk bc he knows he's just driving the point even more that now he's only concerned with blood/clan family, a place LWJ never has and never will fit into).

[Reincarnation AU, childhood friends, angst-ish]
SongXue | Mo Dao Zu Shi Modern AU 07-10-2021
[Dunno if this would turn #songxue 🤔 also breaking songxiao?]
What if yi city ends differently? If the three of them are left able to reincarnate and they meet again in the modern days?
They become childhood friends early due to living in the same building. XY is often over at SL because his guardians are somewhat neglectful. He is the new kid in the bloc after being dropped on relatives of his after being taken away from his parents.
Despite XY tendencies to be disruptive, loud and mean, SL gets really attached to the boy who only wants to be loved. He doesn't know XY full story yet, but he assumes easily his life was not fun before. XXC became friends with SL first since they were born around the same time and their parents are friends. XY is not easy to trust people, but they eventually become friends too since SL is both their friend.
And everything goes well, they couldn't be closer to anyone else, especially with XY trust issues (they are also working on his self-love/esteem issues).
Then in their early teen years xxc and sl start having memories of their past lives, from when they were both travelling together. This only helps the already existing more romantic love they have for each other. They start unofficially dating without telling anyone.
Of course xy notices and despite convincing himself really hard that he did not care they can do whatever, deep down he knows he feels a bit hurt from not being told and left aside too since now they take more time for themselves.
And everything gets worse when he too starts to have old memories, but they do not have a good effect on him.
The first one is a nightmare about losing his pinky finger. He wakes up crying and clutching his pinky which hurts really badly, s if he was back to when he broke it. It had been a long time since it hurt like this. This is followed by sl letting xy sneak to his apartment, holding him close as he tries to calm him down, telling him everything is alright and no one will do what happened in the dream.
At first, the dreams only come every couple of weeks, then nearly weekly, then nearly nightly. All about horrible things he did before, about how little did he care about others.
This mixed with how songxiao are often away on dates only sends him spiralling downwards.
Was he really that cruel?
Was he really that heartless?
Had he really done all this thing in the past?
Was he really unworthy of love?
Would he also become like this?
The last he can take is when xxc attitude towards him suddenly shifts. At first, it is not that visible, but soon xy does notices how he doesn't necessarily hang out alone with him like they did in the past.
He even seems to try and take sl away!! Xy knows it's not just him this time, he is sure this is what it is and it really hurt, of the two people he really trusts one suddenly seems wary of him while the other is slowly being taken away. His reaction to that is to try and cling onto sl as much as he can, scared that he will be alone after with no one to help him not be like in his dreams-memories.
And he is very thankful for sl who seems to let him do so, reassuring him when he needs to and letting him Sleepover when xxc is not here so he can help more easily with the nightmare. How could sl possibly let him alone like this? He loves xy too much to do such a thing even with xxc warnings.
Then one day he remember what happened to sl and xxc. He had fallen asleep after doing some homework with sl and xxc.
He woke up panicked, frantic eyes searching for his friends, scared. He finds them in the living room where xxc is arguing with sl about xy.
"Why won't you listen to me! I told you he did all this, we are the same as before so why would he not be the same too!"
Sl was about to argue when his eyes lands on the panicked xy, shaking like a leaf while looking at them, scared. "Song Lan I-I..." ge starts while looking down at his shaking hands, "I did something bad, you were... and xiao xingchen was... I did something bad".
He was crying and shaking, trying to avoid the glare xxc was giving him. "You see! It is really him he remembers, now why would yo-"
"A-yang come here" sl cut, walking over to hold him in his arms despite his protest because "I don't want to hurt you".
All xxc could do was watch as sl was slowly soothing xy, rocking him from side to side in his solid embrace, whispering in his ears that what he saw was not the xy of today, that he was also doing good work to be good to people.
"I already knew"
And this leaves both xxc and xy stunned.
"You knew!! And didn't tell me or listen to me!!"
Xy on the other end could only think: he knew and stayed with me?
"Yes, I did, because this is our xy, not some past xy, did he ever do anything to us?". This sparked another argument on what thing he might have done (all either harmless pranks or against anyone else) as xy hide against sl torso, flinching at xxc words.
This goes on until xxc storms out of the house, clearly angry that his boyfriend wouldn't listen to him.
sl sighed at that but didn't move away from xy, still standing with his embrace around him tight. At some point he loosened his grip, ready to suggest to move somewhere more comfortable, only to be surprised by the grip around his torso being stronger, as if scared he'll go away.
"Don't worry, I just wanted to move to the bedroom so we can be more comfortable than standing here" he whispered against the top of his head, scared that talking louder would upset xy even more after the near screaming match of before.
he only moved when xy nodded, navigating them back to his room while still holding onto the young man, falling back into it with xy.
"Do you want to talk about what happened in your dream?". a shake of the head, "I see, then we won't". he already had a good idea about it anyway and wasn't that sad to not be reminded of the time he died in the past.
He was a bit upset at xxc not wanting to give xy the chance he deserves. They weren't all the same as their past lives. sl was seeing it as a chance for xy to take another path this time. Similar starts, but with the right people he was sure xy could do great things and be a good person.
He knew xy was good and didn't want to be like he was in the past. after all, he had been there most nights where xy would wake up in tears and panic at the memory of things he did.
xy wanted to be a good person and he would give him that chance. sl made sure to keep xy close to him, grounding him into knowing he wouldn't leave him now. He didn't hesitate to kiss the top of his head, clearly surprising the other young man.
"Don't worry about those memories, we are working on creating new ones" he said, closing his eyes ready to stay here all afternoon if needed, "We are us and they are the past, don't worry about it okay?".
he receive a hesitant nod, but that was enough for him really.
"Good" he smiled while hugging him tighter.
===
(am not sure where exactly this is going. I just wanted to see sl on xy sides from the get-go since it is usually the other way around)

modern xy being cajoled into therapy by xxc is also funny to me i imagine that modern xy just hates that he is mentally ill he does not want to acknowledge that. if he’s crying you better not say a damn word. if he’s having a flashback no he didn’t. if he’s showing any other Symptoms than something in the realm of aggression or anger he’s so pissed abt it. he hates that xiao xingchen is so Into Therapy. and it doesn’t help song lan is there. song lan is a little bit bitchy about xxc liking xy so in his mind he imagines xy wearing a t-shirt that reads “I AM MENTALLY ILL AND I AM SO EMBARRASSED ABOUT IT” to make himself feel better. its ok cause song lan is mentally ill too except hes less embarrassed about it. i for one project all my issues onto song lan sir ur ocd and also u have autism as a little treat for me
ANON. ANON. IM KISSING YOU PASSIONATELY. HOW DID YOU REACH INTO MY MIND AND PLUCK OUT THE LITERAL DYNAMIC RHAT I HAVE DEVELOPED FOR THEM IN MY HEAD. TELL ME YOUR SECRETS. IF I EVER WRITE A FIC ABOUT THEM IM DEDICATINH IT TO YOU <33333
anyway on a more serious note. yeah that’s LITERALLY their relationships to therapy. xxc is So Into Therapy any time he sees someone suffering from the effects of trauma he’s like oh i know a therapist!! because he wants So Fucking Bad for therapy to help people the way it helped him. meanwhile xy is like if therapy even LOOKS at me i’m going to bite its dick off. i don’t have Problems i am Fine stop trying to ask me about my childhood i survived didn’t i? because if he has to think about it too hard he has to confront that he was a CHILD and he didn’t in any way deserve that and it didn’t make him stronger and he didn’t learn anything from it it just hurt him. and then sl is over here somewhere in the middle, probably at least vaguely antipsychiatry for a Multitude of reasons, he doesn’t like thinking too hard about his own issues because that’s pretty painful but he can acknowledge that the three sessions of therapy xxc paid for for him gave him some decently useful skills, but any time he watches xy spit and claw about it he’s like Suddenly I Love Therapy It’s So Good.

If Wei Wuxian Grew Up In Different Sects (or with our lovely Rogue Cultivators)
ft. fanfictions I’ve read for each of them - excluding Yunmeng Jiang Sect
Warnings: Spoilers for MDZS, Canon-typical Yu Ziyuan and her treatment to WWX, a few uncensored cursing
Yunmeng Jiang Sect
Clearly, we know that he and the Jiangs have a- complicated relationship. With Jiang FengMian it’s on a thin line, and though it’s clear he cares for WWX - JFM still sees WWX as just a disciple, not a son because the last words he says to WWX are “A-Ying, A-Cheng... you must look after him.”
With Madam Yu it’s clear that their relationship is unhealthy, she basically abuses him. With Jiang Cheng it’s also unhealthy - as much as I loathe to say it, they will NEVER get the reconciliation we want because WWX has done too much for JC to forgive and JC and his anger issues are not safe for WWX. The only ACTUAL healthy relationship he’s got in the Jiang Sect is with Jiang Yanli. She forgives a lot and it’s clear she loves WWX.
Gusu Lan Sect
Ah - yes, this one. In all honesty, if he WERE to be found by the Lans he would’ve probably be well-behaved since he was just a child and easy to, how do I say it - teach.
He might still have his playfulness but it would be toned down quite a lot. I also like to think that he would get along with Madam Lan and most probably prevent her death. This may be an unpopular opinion, but he and Lan Xichen would get along well, and LXC would be the one to make him comfortable first. WWX would still grow close with Lan Wangji of course, but if anything happens he would not go to LWJ first.
If they grew up together, I’m sorry - but I can’t imagine that he would date LWJ then. But, you can think the other way around! I don’t boss you and tell you who to ship and who not to ship!
Fanfiction: ‘Some call it kidnapping. The Lan Clan call it adoption.’ by IceBreeze
Summary: “Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, look!” Wei Ying did a twirl. “I’m the same as you now! Am I pretty? Say Lan Zhan, am I pretty?”
Huan muffled a laugh behind his sleeve as A-Zhan said “Mn,” eyes never once leaving Wei Ying. There was something a little like awe in his stare, like Wei Ying was the only one in the world to him at that moment, and if Huan hadn’t already known that his little brother cared deeply for Wei Ying then that look would have been all the confirmation he needed.
(If A-Zhan knew what marriage and romance was beyond the vague explanations he’d heard then he’d probably already be courting Wei Ying, with all the dogged determination he shows everything he puts his mind to. It’s adorable, and Huan supports it wholeheartedly, no matter what direction it heads in the end).
Or: an AU Wei Wuxian is taken in by the Lan clan instead of the Jiangs.
Qishan Wen Sect
Hm, this one is quite complicated. To be honest, WWX would probably fit in well in the sect, and Wen Ruohan most possibly cares about power, and WWX is powerful so he’d care for him AND Wen Xu. Wen Chao is just there in the background being bullied, I like to think.
WWX would make Wen Qing their head doctor and give her more power, while he would also help Wen Ning with archery. All and all he would be alright in the Wen Sect, but there would still be a couple casualties here and there, because of Wen Chao’s jealousy.
Fanfiction:  ‘ He was brighter than the Sun’ by AncientOceanmelody
Summary:  Wei Wuxian was the head disciple of Yunmengjiang Sect, he was the pride of Yunmeng. Jiang Fengmian see him like a son, everyone (except Madam Yu) love him.
He would do everything for those who were dear to him.
So why do is feel horrible when Uncle Jiang didn't hesitate when he offer himself to the Wens instead of Jiang Cheng?
Why is he crying?
After all, he was just the son of a friend, the son of a servant, is was obvious his Uncle would prefer his Sect over him.
Qinghe Nie Sect
Again, I’m gonna be honest, but this sect would be the BEST one for WWX to grow up in. Nie Mingjue would get along great with WWX (we’re ignoring canon GROWN WWX) and Nie Huaisang has another brother :D
NHS and WWX would use their time to cause mischief and plot stuff while NMJ is like “These are my brothers. They’re annoying. Don’t you fucking dare lay a finger on them.”
Just - THEY WOULD BE THE HEALTHIEST RELATIONSHIP EVER IN ALL THE SECTS! NMJ taking care of WWX and NHS, NHS constantly worrying over WWX and NMJ because they fight (you know- war I mean) and WWX just being the self-sacrificing moron he is and protecting NMJ and NHS
Fanfiction: ‘shades of grey’ by cl410
Summary: This was why he didn’t like to leave the Unclean Realm, Nie Mingjue thought with dismay. Guileless dark eyes blinked up at him, tiny hands clutching at his robes.
Or: Nie Mingjue comes across Wei Wuxian before Jiang Fengmian, and decides Nie Huaisang could use a friend.
Lanling Jin Sect
OH BOY! I just love Jin Zixuan getting along with WWX and being an older brother to him. I would think that if JZX (Not Zixun, I despise him) grew up with WWX they would definitely get along and have a healthier relationship than the Yunmeng Bros. Jin Guangshan would definitely not see the point in having WWX in there, and Madam Jin is much more empathetic and she would be the on to take care of WWX.
You may be wondering - Jin Zixuan is Jin Zixuan. Wouldn’t his pride get in the way of things? He’s not called a peacock for no reason, and yes! I can see why you think that! But look at MianMian! She’s JZX best friend BECAUSE she probably grew up with him, and it’s clear in terms of temperament she’s better than JZX and she might even rival him in swordsmanship. If given the choice to grow up with him, WWX would have an amazing brotherly relationship with JZX, and would most likely accept the fact that WWX is amazing and would be PROUD of him.
Also JZX’s relationship with Jiang Yanli may improve JUST BECAUSE WWX is there
(I might just be biased, idk)
Fanfiction: ‘Twin Treasures’ by crossdressingdeath
Summary: When Madame Jin happens to come across Cangse Sanren's orphaned son on a trip to Yiling, she can't bring herself to leave him there. Wei Wuxian finds a somewhat different family. Jin Zixuan finds a little brother. The course of history changes accordingly.
(Some things are written in fate, but even fate itself changes.)
Rogue Cultivators - Song Zichen and Xiao Xingchen
Let me point out first that Xingchen is ETHEREAL! HE’S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON ON THE PLANET! (Song Jiyang is amazing istg I’ve never watched The Untamed but I’ve SEEN clips of them like 哥你怎样那么美).
ANYWAYS, BACK TO THE POINT! Xiao Xingchen and Song Zichen would be amazing parents, don’t deny it. SZC would be rocky at taking care of WWX at first but he would get the hang of it and be the most over-protective person on the planet and would KILL ANYONE who hurts his family. Xiao Xingchen on the other hand would be the doting and loving parent. He spoils WWX but not as much as SZC (though he would never admit it). SZC and XXC would be the best if you want WWX to have parental figures.
Fanfiction:  ‘Frost moon's sun’ by RenaFair
Summary: Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan had dreamed of founding a sect together, that is until Xingchen heard what happened to his shijie. The two then decides to put their little dream on hold as they care for a pair of tiny hands between them, protecting the little boy with a sunshine smile as best as they can.
Alternately; Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan adopted Wei Ying after his parents' death.

About the Wei Wuxian/Xiao Xingchen parallelism: I was thinking about wei wuxian doing empathy and assisting xiao xingchen's suicide and in the novel he's basically thinking: "I was like him, I could only cry, desperate and miserable and with no hope in the world", and this was really a lot to process.
And then I thought about wwx's state of mind after yanli's death, maybe he was like that, though we have no real evidence since the memory loss, but I think this a clear parallelism of WWX/XXC and their most painful moments.
I'm glad you managed to get this through at last despite tumblr being unhelpful.
Anyway, one of my favorite things about MDZS is how moments tend to parallel each other, clarifying things that otherwise go unsaid. It works so well for the kind of narrative it is! And I think this is one of the most interesting uses.
The reason Yi City never feels random is that even if its characters aren't super connected to the main plot, the themes resonate enough that the whole thing just... fits in.
Anyway, about this scene, let me pull the relevant section:
A-Qing covered her mouth as firm as she could, refusing to let out any trace of her whimpered crying. Inside of the coffin home, Xue Yang paced from one side to the other as he cursed with a terrifying tone of both wrath and ecstasy, “Saving the world! What a joke. You can’t even save yourself!”
Series of sharp pains stabbed at Wei WuXian’s head. This time, the pain wasn’t from A-Qing’s soul.
Crestfallen, Xiao XingChen kneeled on the ground, beside Song Lan’s feet. He squeezed himself close, as though he had shrunk into a small, weak lump of something, almost hoping that he’d disappear from this world. His snowy white robes had already been covered in dust and blood. Xue Yang shouted at him, “You couldn’t do anything, you’ve failed miserably, you’re the only one to blame—you asked for all of this!”
At this moment, Wei WuXian saw himself in Xiao XingChen.
Him, who failed miserably as he stood drenched in blood, who couldn’t do anything except silently acknowledge the critiques and accusations, who was wholly beyond hope, who could only cry in despair!
It's remarked over and over again in the novel that WWX forgets things easily. Except that it seems to be mostly (though not completely) a defense mechanism.
I think like XXC, WWX very much wanted to die, and more than that, I think he actively tries to not think about the events surrounding his death. Yeah, he doesn't remember, but I think he doesn't want to, either. But I do think he still has some impressions about that time - namely, that he wasn't doing great emotionally speaking - and that hearing XY's words (which definitely apply to him too) make him instinctively remember how he felt then. It's not just, I think, that he can relate to XXC's horror, it's that the cruel things XY says are all things WWX must've said to himself. Which, you know. Fun times.

Okayyy, XueXiao HCs time:
Tumblr media
Under the cut because I was fucking feeling emotions writing these, so they may get cringy and/or embarrassing.
~You've been warned!~
Cooking together: before you go wait but that’s canon hear me out! Xue Yang's always clinging onto Xiao Xingchen, hugging from behind and holding his palms over his hand as they hold the knife, chopping the food, maybe he kisses him on the cheek too while they’re at it or whispers something gross or cheesy in his ear that makes Xiao Xingchen giggle, both at the audacity and at the soft, serious tone of his voice.
Birthdays: Xiao Xingchen prepares everything weeks in advance with A-Qing’s reluctant assistance. Instead of a huge meal, he goes overboard with several different types of cake and sweets. 'Xue Yang needs a cake for every birthday he didn't have one' especially due to his sweet tooth, as Xiao Xingchen insists. Xue Yang falls in love 200x more,
HeadPats !! - listen, I’m not big on cheesy PDA and neither was Xue Yang, until Xiao Xingchen did it the first time and it put the biggest dumbest smile on Xue Yang’s face (or so A-Qing told Xiao Xingchen mockingly), but he found that exceedingly cute and wants to do that again and again.
XY: cannot stop swearing and won’t
XXC: can swear but won’t
Until he picks up his boyfriend’s habit and just does it at inappropriate times or mixing up curse words making Xue Yang laugh his fucking ass off. So he takes it upon himself to teach him the right way to do this.
Xue Yang can.not.stop teasing the fuck out of him every single chance he gets but then always immediately jumps in his arms and hugs him telling him the truth in spite of himself (because he’s so in love he can’t help it). Xiao XIngchen always finds his shenanigans funny and adorable, also inspite of himself.
Xiao Xingchen comforts Xue Yang through his nightmares all the time, he’s always there to hug him, or kiss him, or reassure him and pats his back or wipes away his tears.
Of course Xue Yang vehemently insists he wasn’t crying. But even Xue Yang can’t help it, it’s a big ball of fucked mix of feelings (that he cannot understand) ranging between his terrible past life and the blissful love life he can't believe he's leading now, next to someone that finally shows him all the kindness and love.
Xue Yang is purely infatuated with Xiao Xingchen to the point where he's literally following him everywhere ready to go fucking feral on everyone mocking him or taking advantage of him for his blindness. He thinks the only one allowed to do that because they kiss and make up afterwards.
If you read this far, do I do a part 2 ? Idk. feel free to send me your own HCs in an ask if you want, I'd gladly react to them.
goes to hide under the ground

I have so much to say about Ch.40. Everything about it is epic, including the length. The chapter is almost 11,000 characters long! Keep in mind, most chapters in the book are around 5-8,000.
There's way too much to contain in any one post, so I'll start out with how much I enjoy how openly and delightfully antagonistic AQ and XY are to each other all the time. Also hilarious is that XY rolls his eyes all the time. I think I've counted 5 or 6 different instances! He's so petty and childish :D
Here's some examples of the two of them sniping at each other:
Listening as Ā-Qìng squawked away as she always did to coax Xiǎo Xīngchén into telling her a story, he lost his patience, “Quit carrying on. Keep it up and I’ll tie your tongue in a knot.”
Ā-Qìng simply didn’t listen to him and demanded, “Dàozháng, I wanna hear a story!”
Later on, when XXC is referring to SL without naming him, XY of course keeps needling him about it.
Although Ā-Qìng didn’t understand the situation, she seemed to pick up on it. She scarcely was breathing as she silently cut a look over to Xuē Yáng. There was a faint itch down in the roots of her teeth, as if she couldn’t wait to bite him.
This chapter is, of course, when SL returns and then meets his untimely end :( That in itself deserves its own post, but AQ's reaction afterwards...
She sobbingly said, “I have to go back. Dear spirit of the departed, please bless me so that I can save Xiǎo Xīngchén-dàozháng no matter what. Bless us so that we can escape from that demon’s clutches. Never let that living monster Xuē Yáng have a decent death, tear his corpse into ten thousand pieces, and never let him reincarnate for the rest of eternity!”
That curse is metal as fuck. Get'em, girl!
She goes back and XY is instantly suspicious of her crying face. AQ goes on to put on an Oscar-worthy performance.
Suddenly, Ā-Qìng dropped her pole and started wailing. She was sniffling back tears as she cried, not able to catch her breath, and threw herself into Xiǎo Xīngchén’s arms, “Uh—uh—uh—am I ugly? Am I really ugly? Dàozháng, tell me. Am I really, truly ugly?”
Xiǎo Xīngchén stroked her head and said, “Where? You’re so beautiful. Who said you were ugly?”
Xuē Yáng regarded them with disdain, “Drop dead ugly. You’re even uglier when you’re crying.”
So petty! I think he's more jealous that she's hugging XXC more than anything else. After they get through one terribly nerve-wracking dinner, this happens.
After eating, Xiǎo Xīngchén tidied up the dishes and took them away. Ā-Qìng was too restless to sit there and wanted to slip out after him, but Xuē Yáng suddenly called out to her, “Ā-Qìng.”
Ā-Qìng’s heart abruptly skipped a beat and Wèi Wúxiàn felt every hair on her head stand on end.
She said, “What are you suddenly calling me by my name for!”
Xuē Yáng said, “Didn’t you yourself tell me you hate it when I call you ‘blind kid’?”
Ā-Qìng groaned, “Anyone that starts acting that nice all of a sudden is up to no good! What do you actually want?”
Xuē Yáng grinned, “Nothing. I’ll just teach you what to do next time someone makes fun of you.”
Ā-Qìng said, “Ah, tell me. What should I do?”
Xuē Yáng said, “Whoever called you ugly, you should then make her uglier and cut up her face seventeen or eighteen times with a knife. Make her so that she wouldn’t dare show her face to anyone for the rest of her life. Whoever made fun of you for being blind, you should sharpen the end of your bamboo pole and then poke both her eyes out. Make her become blind too. Do you think she’d still dare to run her mouth?”
Ā-Qìng’s blood ran cold, so she just pretended to believe that he was bluffing, “You’re messing with me again!”
Xuē Yáng hummed, “I’m just messing with you.” After he said it, he pushed the plate with the rabbit apples towards her, “Eat.”
Looking at the plate full of round cuteness, the rabbit apples with their red skin and golden flesh, a cold chill spread through Ā-Qìng and Wèi Wúxiàn’s mind.
XY sure is creative when it comes to threats and torture. The apples were, in fact, just apples though and not poisoned. Which makes me wonder...He was carving those before AQ ever got back and he had no idea she was around when he fought SL, so he wouldn't need to try and entice her. He apparently just carves apples into cute shapes for his own enjoyment. I enjoy that about him.

And All Is Singing
Tumblr media
One month after Song Lan restores him to life, Xiao Xingchen hears a child crying.
Or: XXC returns, and his past sins and loss of his golden core are not the only things haunting him.
SongXiao - past XueXiao - T - Read on AO3!
Thank you @gusu-emilu for the prompt!
* * *
One-hundred and fifty-seven years.
That’s how long it takes Song Lan to nurse Xiao Xingchen’s shattered spirit back to wholeness and return it to his preserved body.
And now, one month later, Xiao Xingchen lies awake in a roadside inn, wondering if he would have been better off remaining in Song Lan’s spirit-trapping pouch.
Useless. His dead-alive, new-old body is utterly useless. Death extinguished his golden core, left him empty. He can no longer sense the spiritual energy that let him find his way around without his eyes, no longer night-hunt with Song Lan, no longer do anything other than trip along at his partner’s side during the day and lie awake waiting for him to return at night.
No chance of atoning for his sins. No chance of doing anything to deserve this second chance at life.
He turns over onto his side, pretending he can feel the faint stir of spiritual energy in the moonlight he imagines on his face. A full moon, according to Song Lan. He tries to recall its silvery glow but finds that the memory has faded.
Just like everything else about him.
Something wet wells from the corners of his empty eyes, trickles down his cheek, dipping inwards towards his mouth.
It tastes of blood.
He wipes the tear away. Rolls onto his back. Closes his eyes beneath his blindfold.
No. Not quite right.
Patting beside the bed, he grasps the white horsetail whisk Song Lan has preserved all these years. Tucks it in his arms. Lies on his back again, still and silent and doing his best to prevent his chest from rising and falling.
He’s on the border between sleep and wakefulness when he hears it.
The faint sound of a child crying. Low and muffled, as if the child is afraid of being overheard.
A dream. Just a dream…
But he can’t forget the sound.
“Did you hear a child crying last night?” he asks Song Lan anyway the next morning. “I thought I heard something…”
We’re the only guests, Song Lan traces onto Xiao Xingchen’s palm.
Nothing the next night, just the mournful whistle of wind through the treetops as they camp beside the road. Or the next night, or the night after that, or the night after that.
Exactly one month later, Xiao Xingchen is lying beside Song Lan, mind hazy, when he hears it again.
A long, low wail, drifting in through the open window, a sound filled with pain and fear and loneliness. A lonely sound, full of pain and fear and loneliness, the whimper of a wounded child who doesn’t understand why it’s been hurt.
“Again!” Xiao Xingchen grips Song Lan’s arm. “Zichen, I heard it again!”
What?
“A—a child—”
Nothing. Sleep…
Song Lan is right. The night is silent. Just the soothing patter of rain on the roof, the rustle of the breeze ruffling the dripping trees.
But Xiao Xingchen rises, pads barefoot across the room, stands at the window. Warm rain mists his face when the wind shifts, and he fills his lungs with the scent of wet earth, grounding himself in the senses he has left.
A creak of floorboard behind him, and Song Lan lays a hand on his shoulder. Song Lan still dislikes touching other people, but he makes occasional exceptions for Xiao Xingchen.
Xiao Xingchen misses the casual, easy touch of—
Of no one, he tells himself, banishing all thought of Yi City from his mind, as he has countless times these past two months.
But he still offers Song Lan his palm, as much to feel his skin on his as to allow him to speak.
All right?
Xiao Xingchen closes his hand around Song Lan’s. It’s cold, but better than nothing. “I’m fine.”
Don’t look fine, Song Lan says, and slips his hand away.
“I just want to be alone for a bit.” As if he isn’t alone most nights while Song Lan goes night hunting. “I’m going to get some fresh air.” He takes Shuanghua and his walking stick—his last memory of A-Qing—(Don’t think about her, either) —and leaves their room, taps his way out of the inn, goes to stand outside in his thin white inner robe.
He removes his blindfold and tilts his face up to rain, squeezing the cool mud of the courtyard between his bare toes. He walks on a little farther, heart in his mouth at his inability to feel the spiritual energy around him, of walking blindly into the unknown—
Courtyard. Trees, he reminds himself. As always when entering a new place, Song Lan has described it for him. Nobody is around this late in the rain; you’ll be safe.
And if you get lost, Song Lan will always find you.
Always.
Sweeping his stick before him, he walks until he hits the treeline, walks on farther until he enters a clearing. Lies on his back in the wet grass. His blindfold is off, face turned up to be kissed by the warm rain he can no longer sense, only feel.
Washed with rain, soaking in nature, he’s as close to being at peace as he has been since that horrifying realization that he had been returned against his will to the world he’d tried to leave, since waking up in darkness, stabbed with grief and terror so sharp it was like a knife to bone.
The grief had softened into a gentle ache over the loss of A-Qing, but the terror had never truly dissipated, just twisted itself into a fear of an empty future, of an eternal life devoid of worth.
Song Lan uses resentful energy to night-hunt. You don’t seem to have any, but perhaps you can cultivate your core again…whatever you are, you’re not a fierce corpse; perhaps this is still possible. You can be useful again, do good…
Like a puff of air displacing a flower petal, the thought dispels the peaceful feeling, letting the dark thoughts seep in.
Cultivation is what allowed him to cause all the harm he had. Led him astray, helped trick him into killing those villagers, killing...killing Song Lan.
Even to night-hunt again, to vanquish demons alongside his partner—
Not worth it. Not worth the risk.
Not even with Song Lan beside him to protect him from people like—people like—
Don’t think about him.
Think about Song Lan instead.
Song Lan. Song Lan, tending his spirit for a hundred and fifty years with unceasing devotion Xiao Xingchen knows he does not deserve yet still welcomes the thought of.
Warmth blooms in his empty chest as he sinks into the memory of Song Lan holding him every night during those first terrible few weeks despite his aversion to touch, caring for him like a newborn child…
Child.
No. A dream. All a dream…
Silence. The soothing patter of rain on leaves, the warm wetness weighing down his limbs, the earth soft and solid beneath him.
He’s drifting along the border of sleep when he hears it again.
A little boy, by the sound of it.
Not entirely human, by the feel of it.
It wants something from him.
Needs something from him.
It’s almost overwhelming, the pure desperation radiating from the huddled ball of tormented spiritual energy. Different from how he used to sense spiritual energy, but just as distinct.
A whisper of mist over his hand, as if the spirit is touching him, and he opens the eyes he no longer has.
A flash of—of something approaching sight. A cloudy glimpse of a little boy, no older than six or seven, with tear tracks on his filthy cheeks.
“What's your name?” Xiao Xingchen murmurs. He keeps his voice soft, but it’s too much. The spell is broken. The spirit fades into the night, melted by the rain, and Xiao Xingchen is left in darkness again.
He doesn’t tell Song Lan what he sensed that night— saw that night. Can’t risk Song Lan dispatching the spirit before Xiao Xingchen understands what it wants from him.
Needs from him.
Another month passes, each day creeping by.
Anticipation builds as the full moon approaches.
He’ll be ready, this time.
There is no rain this month. Song Lan leaves for a night-hunt before the sun has fully set, heading out into the nearby forest. Full moons always draw out spirits and ghosts. Fuxue will be well-fed tonight.
As soon as he leaves, Xiao Xingchen sits cross-legged in the center of their bed and begins meditation.
Not just meditation.
He has no golden core left to draw upon, but he enters as deep of a meditative state as he can. Reaches out with his feelings, sinks into a state as close as possible to Empathy, into the hazy borderlands between consciousness and sleep.
A scuffling sound, as if something is crawling out from beneath the bed, and again he feels the spirit’s cold touch.
The boy is clearer this time. Misty around the edges, and glowing with a dim silver light, but clearly outlined in the darkness of the room. His hair is long and matted, face gaunt, his throat and cheek bruised and cut. His free hand is tucked inside his ragged tunic, the other resting lightly on Xiao Xingchen’s hand.
“What is your name?” Xiao Xingchen asks, though he doesn’t dare speak the words out loud.
The boy shakes his head.
“What happened to your hand?” Xiao Xingchen asks, trying again. The desperate need of the little boy is almost overwhelming, burning in his sunken black eyes. “What can I do to set you at rest? How long have you been like this?”
The boy shakes his head, but he draws his hand out from his tunic.
It’s all Xiao Xingchen can do to keep from jumping to his feet and breaking the trance. The boy’s left hand is a skin-bag full of pulp, the little finger severed at the joint. Slivers of bone jut through the swollen purple flesh, bright red blood oozing from around each sliver as if the wound is fresh and not enough time has passed for the bleeding to truly start.
“Who did this to you?” Xiao Xingchen whispers, sick, and the desperation in the child’s eyes suddenly turns to undiluted hatred so powerful it’s as if his frail body can’t contain it.
“Chang Cian,” says the boy, and at this Xiao Xingchen does start back, shattering the trance, because he now recognizes the boy.
Recognizes Xue Yang.
Xiao Xingchen doesn’t speak at all the next day. Or the next. On the third day Song Lan finally reaches for his hand.
What’s wrong?
“Nothing.”
Not nothing.
And so he tells him. It can only help if Song Lan banishes the repugnant little spirit, rids Xiao Xingchen for good of the ghost of his tormentor, banishes the last scrap of memory.
Sure it was him?
“I’m positive.”
What will you do?
Xiao Xingchen pulls his hand away and continues walking. They’re on their way to Xinjiang, where they heard of a spate of violent hauntings that the main clans have ignored. “Nothing,” he says. “He deserves whatever purgatory this is.”
Suffering much?
Xiao Xingchen hates the ugly feelings welling in him, hates the cruelty he hears in his own voice. “I think he’s trapped in the last moment he was—was uncorrupted, which was—”
An unwanted memory: "But the man was so irritated at the sound of his crying, that he snatched the driver’s whip and lashed the child’s face, knocking him to the ground. Then the wheels of the carriage rolled over the child’s hand, one finger at a time. He was seven! The bones of his left were completely crushed, while one finger was milled into battered flesh on the spot!"
Song Lan makes a questioning sound in the back of his throat.
Xiao Xingchen walks faster. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”
They camp by the side of the road that night. Neither of them need to eat or drink, but Xiao Xingchen needs to sleep, and both appreciate the heat of a fire.
Song Lan takes his hand again as they settle down around the campfire.
Enough time. Enough pain.
Meaning: Hasn’t enough time passed? Hasn’t he suffered enough? Atoned enough?
A spurt of resentment. It’s been harder and harder to keep his usual tight grip on his negative emotions. He’s slaughtered entire villages; what difference would anger or bitterness or selfishness make in the cosmic scheme of things?
“He wiped out your entire temple,” he says. “Killed everyone you ever cared about.” Drove me to death, he adds, but not aloud. Isn’t that alone enough for you?
For a moment he thinks Song Lan is going to accuse him of being the cause of his temple's destruction, as he had on the terrible night so many years ago, but Song Lan just shakes his head.
Don’t forgive him. Will never forgive. But enough time. Enough pain.
“So you don’t care, as they would have all been dead by now anyway. Celibate monks, a mere blip.” Xiao Xingchen hates how good the words feel leaving his mouth, hates how he can’t stop himself from saying them, hates how he doesn’t want to stop himself.
Xingchen—
“The people I killed, entire bloodlines ended— ” The words tumble out, tripping over each other. “ —that can never be atoned for, that can never be undone—”
Worse than what happened to your temple, are the unspoken words, and Xiao Xingchen can almost feel the pain he knows must be twisting Song Lan’s face, and he’s crushed by a wave of guilt.
Xue Yang did this to him. Xue Yang turned him into this useless, empty, cruel thing.
A child. Song Lan’s touch is even lighter than usual, almost hesitant. Just a child, now…
“A monster,” says Xiao Xingchen, and he rises and strides off into the forest, leaving Shuanghua behind.
Song Lan lets him go.
A month. He has another month to decide what to do. A month to savor the thought of the little boy’s terror and agony and—and—
Xiao Xingchen sinks to his knees, dissolving into a fit of tears.
Shameful tears that he does his best to hold in but can't. Instead he sobs silently, the blood staining his pure white robes, sobs until there’s no strength left in his thin, empty body. He lies curled up amongst the fallen leaves, holding A-Qing’s stick to his chest, the memory of the little boy’s tear-stained face rising before his sightless eyes.
The memory of His hand on his elbow, His chin on his shoulder, His arms around his waist. His mouth on his, the sound of His laugh, the taste of His oversalted congee.
A month. A month of this—
Xiao Xingchen digs the heels of his palms into his empty eye sockets.
He can’t take a month of this.
Or even another night.
He drags himself up onto his knees, digging his fingers into the damp earth.
I forgive you! he cries out with every part of him but his voice. I forgive you! Just stop haunting me!
Nothing.
Nothing—
He sinks back to the forest floor, a single tear trickling from the corner of his eye.
Desperate for the oblivion of sleep, he slows his breathing, focusing on the forest around him. The whisper of the breeze. The burble of a nearby brook as it rushes towards the river. The trill of a nightbird. The rustle of a mouse in the underbrush. He can almost hear the ants swarming up and down a nearby tree trunk—
“You lied.”
Xiao Xingchen opens his nonexistent eyes. The little boy is sitting beside him, staring down at him solemnly.
“You lied just now.” His high thin child’s voice is incongruously world-weary. “Doesn’t matter, anyway. It’s not what I need.”
Xiao Xingchen wants to sit up but is afraid of breaking the spell. “What do you want?”
The little boy tilts his head at him. He’s different tonight, somehow. Older, though he looks the same. He’s no longer crying, and there’s an oddly keen look in his sunken black eyes.
“What do you want?” he returns.
A surge of frustration. Xiao Xingchen sits up, meaning to sever the connection, but though he’s upright he’s still in the trance, still trapped by the little boy. The moon should not be full, but an enormous silver globe floats behind the boy, cut through with what must be tree trunks, black against the white, and he can just see the silvery outlines of his own limbs.
“What is that you want?” The little boy’s frail, high-pitched voice is somehow piercing. “What do we all want?”
Xiao Xingchen surrenders. What does it matter if he tells the truth? He’d already laid himself bare in Yi City. There is nothing about him that Xue Yang does not already know.
“To make an impact,” he says. “To make a difference in the world, despite the loss of my eyes. But I can’t, not like this, so all I’ll have left are the atrocities I’ve committed.”
The little boy gazes past him. Blood drips from his bone-pierced hand, as if it has finally begun to bleed, and wells from the cut on his cheek.
“Did I make any impact?” he asks.
A stab of hatred. The memory of Shuanghua piercing flesh. “More than most.”
“On you?”
Xiao Xingchen laughs. “How can you ask that? Look at me!”
The boy’s eyes are sad. “Is that all?”
“Yes.”
“You lie.” The desperation is back, the overpowering need. “Another lie!”
“Xue Yang,” Xiao Xingchen says aloud, speaking the name like an epithet, and the little boy clutches at his sleeve, staining the white with red.
“That’s not all—I know it isn’t—”
“That’s not all you ever were,” Xiao Xingchen admits, filled with a desperation of his own, a sudden frantic need to rid himself of this specter, to banish it forever, by any means necessary, even the truth. “I—I cared for you once—you made me—happy—”
I cared for you once. He winces as the words leave his mouth, at the words he had never spoken aloud even during their best days in Yi City.
They hang in the air between them, catching the light from the ghostly white moon, quivering and diffident, but solid.
The faint silver light clinging to the boy intensifies as he leans into the words. The glow brightens, brushing his skin with radiance.
Peace fills his face.
“Thank you, daozhang,” he says, and he melts into a shimmering mist.
It’s not sorrow that makes Xiao Xingchen break down. It’s not even relief.
He doesn’t know what it is, except that he’s not strong enough to resist it from overpowering him.
The blood pours from his eyes, soaking his robes, absorbs the red stains left on his arm by Xue Yang’s crushed hand. He cries until there’s no blood left in his body, loud, body-wracking sobs that, for the first time in his life, he does nothing to resist or hide.
The world has changed when he finally looks up.
Silvery light illuminates the forest. The moon is gone, but its glow remains, radiating from the trees, the grass, the soil.
His range of vision expands, encompassing the entire forest, the river, the vast sweep of the mountains and the entirety of the sky.
All is silver. All is singing.
Now, drifting in the space-between, he can sense the thousands upon thousands of spirits wandering the earth, see them burning like blazing beacons of need, waiting for him to come and set them too at peace. He himself is a silvery flame, his bloodied limbs alight with a luminescence born not of spiritual energy, nor of resentful energy, but something in between.
The light becomes bright and brighter, the spirits’ light merging with that of the land, a dazzling white light that fills the emptiness inside him, chases away the shadows filling his chest.
Xiao Xingchen wakes.

Fic ideas that keep me in a fog at inappropriate times throughout the day, Part 2C (the finale!)
-Genderswap Jiang Yanli & Jiang Cheng:
-It turns out XY had come to LP for two reasons: the Ghost Flute and XXC, who he had heard was in LP and he is still obsessed with him.  Army destroyed, WN taken back, he unleashes his final weapon-a Fierce Corpse Song Lan that is also controlled through nails.  WN and JC work together to subdue SL and they end up destroying a good chunk of the buildings just outside LP to do it; JC holds SL down with Zidian while WN digs out the nails.  Meanwhile, XXC and WWX are tackling XY and they almost take him, but XY manages to nab a-Qing and uses his poison powder to blind her before running away.
-JC offers shelter to XXC, SL, and a-Qing, puts WWX into a cell, and WN is banned on penalty of death (permanent) from LP.  She’s only allowing WN to leave because he helped her deal with SL and over the years, her hatred has settled on WWX who she blames more for losing control of his puppet-but that doesn’t mean she will suffer WN’s presence in her home, where her children live.
-XXC makes a plea for WWX’s release, points to the mess in Lanling and the evidence that JGS had been manipulating events for a long time to obtain a Stygian Tiger Amulet of his own.  Tells JC about the year WWX has spent with him and a-Qing, trying to grow and develop MXY’s fledging core, all the tests XXC had done to ensure that he was not possessing MXY but had been invited in by the troubled young man.  JC won’t release him, but doesn’t torture him or hurt him, and sends inquiries to her husband in Lanling to try and verify what she is being told.
-JGY becoming suspicious of his wife’s questions, because she’s as subtle as a brick to the side of the head, tells of his worries to his er-ge who has come to help him in Lanling with the sect and his stepson/nephew.  LWJ being there as well, overhears the conversation, his mind already programmed to go from zero to Wei Ying in a second flat-immediately flies off to LP to confirm his suspicions.
-LWJ and JC fight on the docks of LP, Bichen versus Zidian/Sandu, over WWX, who is let out of his cell by XXC, led there by an anxious Jiang Rusong who is worried about his mother.  WWX flailing over his nephew and crying over the news of his niece named after their dead brother, but also stumbling out to put his body between his soulmate and his meimei.
-Accusations all over the place, Zidian used against WWX despite LWJ trying to shield him-WN erupts back on the scene and demands that JC do Empathy on him to understand the truth of what had happened.  JC only relenting after a screaming accusing rant that leads to LWJ correcting her false belief that WWX killed Jiang Yan-that even in the midst of the fighting at Nightless City, the corpses had steered clear of all YMJ members.  That it was a Jin disciple who really killed JY, trying to kill WWX, and that WWX tore through the Jin delegation in his grief over his brother’s death.  That he wouldn’t leave the battlefield from where he had been curled over JY’s body, that LWJ had wrestled him away back to the Burial Mounds with WWX cursing him the entire way.
-JC finally agrees to Empathy.  She sees through WN’s eyes what happened: that JY had been captured and brought back to LP after the initial fall; that WN and WWX had broken in and got him out, that JY’s core had been melted and all his health problems and the effects of the torture converged to put him in a coma, that WQ couldn’t wake him, that JY was going to die because even though his core had been weak, it had been keeping him alive all this time, that without a core, it was only a matter of time.
-JC sees WWX stumbling upon the research with the cores, convincing WQ to do the procedure, the two days of conscious torment/torture that WWX put himself through to save their brother, how WWX and JY are recovering but get news that Wen Chao is on his way to check the Supervisory station.  WWX makes plans with WQ and WN to get JY to his Meishan relatives while WWX goes out to draw away the Wens.  JC sees how WQ and WN are punished for suspicion of helping WWX and JY, sees WN being taken to the prison camp, sees the Jin soldiers abusing the Dafan Wen, sees WN die, sees his resurrection, fast forwards to life in the Burial Mounds, the ambush at Qiongqi path, the events leading up to JZX’s death, WN being captured, being put under the influence of the nails, of witnessing years of collaboration between JGS and XY, seeing them plot against WWX before the Nightless City slaughter, sees them working on developing an amulet, on getting rid of NMJ-of using her husband to deliver the deadly artifact, XY’s descent into madness and the plans he makes to wipe out the Jin sect, everything down to the last few days
-JC emerging shaken, grief-stricken, and still so angry.  Shouting at WWX for giving away his core, for not telling her and JY as to why he turned to demonic cultivation, for not trusting them to help him because of some stupid instinctual drive for self-sacrifice.  Demanding to know what she should do with all this new information, if that is meant to excuse how JZX died, how her brother died, how WWX killed himself in front of her eyes-what is she supposed to do now with the nine years of grief and hatred she held for WWX?  Is she supposed to be sorry for him, to grovel at his feet?  Should she apologize for mistaking him and his reasons?  Or condemn him for not speaking the truths that would have made things clearer?
-JC decides to do neither; ordering WWX to leave LP with XXC and LWJ, that she will continue to shelter a-Qing as she recovers but the others must go (including the fierce corpses).  LP goes into lockdown after they leave and JC calls for help from her Meishan relatives before leaving her young children behind in LP while she travels to Lanling to help sort through this mess.
-NHS picking up the trail of WWX and putting his scheme back into play.  WWX and co on the hunt for the demonic arm and other body parts after stumbling upon rumours that the YLLZ had returned and was responsible for the slaughter at Mo Village a year past and Lanling just a few months past.  The hunt leads them to picking up XY’s trail again, and it all points to Lanling once more.
-WWX and LWJ go back to Lanling, WWX hiding in the company of LWJ and they start snooping, armed with WN’s memory of a hidden vault in the former sect leader’s rooms.  WWX enters as a paperman, has a heart attack immediately upon entering before JC is there with her husband and it’s been a long few months since they last saw each other, and JC went through a lot of emotional distress recently, and she and her husband have been having a lot of stress-relieving fucks all over Koi Tower and are in the middle of fucking in JGS’s former rooms when WWX enters
-Obviously traumatized, WWX dashes for the mirror and ends up making enough sound that eventually JGY and JC notice, decouple, and try to find the source of the ruckus.  Leads to a merry chase around the rooms and hidden vault, which JGY and JC are seeing for the first time, and eventually the paperman (which JC immediately recognizes) knocks over a strange box on one of the shelves and it topples to the floor, revealing NMJ’s head
-around this time, XY attacks XXC and SL, but is actually aiming for the recovered parts of NMJ’s body.  Uses demonic cultivation enough to confuse SL and get him to attack XXC-WN is occupied trying to contain him.  Once he has the body parts, XY races off to Koi Tower to find the head.  Apparently his plan is to put together NMJ’s body, thinking the resentment in him will make him the most powerful FC and he wants him under his control.  XY manages to take Jin Ling hostage and forces JC and JGY to hand over the head.  In Glamour Hall, we have the Guanyin Temple scene adapted for this AU.
-JC, JGY, WWX, LWJ and Jin Ling are main hostages.  XY has small army of FCs and some Jin disciple that he had swayed over during his time under JGS.  XY forces WWX to bring NMJ back to life and under XY’s control.  LXC and NHS interrupt the proceedings, then we find out Su She is in on the scheme-he binds their spiritual power and reveals he had been helping JGS in exchange for financial backing and now helps XY who has promised to help him destroy GusuLan or kill the Twin Jades (some shit like that-does anyone really care about Su She’s motivations?  He’s a dick-that’s his motivation).
-WWX brings NMJ back, but can’t control him.  NMJ rips apart XY and the minions while JC and JGY get to JL.  Su She decides to duel LXC because he’s a fucking idiot, but has his spiritual energy while LXC does not.  LXC takes a sword to the side (he’ll live) and then LWJ steps in and kills Su She.  WWX is trying to get NMJ under control and manages it until NMJ sees JGY and loses his shit.  JC tries to help, but spiritual power binded.  WN steps between NMJ and her family, fights him off until SL arrives and helps him subdue him.  NHS takes this as confirmation that JGY helped kill his brother and demands that WWX return da-ge’s consciousness to confirm it.
-JC stands up for her husband, who barely even saw NMJ before his death.  JGY stays quiet, watches his wife defend him and looks over at NHS and sees how this is not going to be let go.  Passes his stepson/nephew over to XXC and asks that JL be taken out of the room. Confesses to a shocked JC that even though he didn’t kill NMJ himself, he knew JGS wanted him dead-that JGS told him to give the cursed object to NMJ and he handed over cursed object as a gift knowing full well that it would probably harm NMJ.  That he didn’t try to stop it, because he couldn’t stand up to his father at all.  Says the only time he had had been six months ago, when JGS finally ordered him to kill JC and JGY said no because he didn’t want to kill his wife.  That he made contact with XY secretly and helped him plot out a way to kill JGS and certain members of the Jin sect in return for the Ghost Flute-how he couldn’t fulfill his end of the deal because he couldn’t get it away from JC and that’s why XY ended up in LP because he was tired of waiting for JGY.
-JC is furious, but still refuses to let NHS have JGY because negligence doesn’t mean intent, because if it did she was within her rights to ask for WWX’s head and for NHS for returning WWX to life.  JGY sees better how this isn’t going to end well for his wife and lets the final secret drop-tells her that JZX wasn’t supposed to be at QP, but that JGY sent him by telling him that JC had heard Jin Zixun had gone to confront WWX there and she was panicking and was trying to chase after them.  How JZX told JGY to keep JC at Koi Tower and flew off to his death, because JGY thought if JZX was dead, then JGS would have to accept JGY as his rightful heir and only son.
-At this final betrayal, JC leaves JGY for NHS to handle.  LWJ and LXC want there to be a trial, but NHS and JGY don’t.  JGY gives himself over to NMJ and NMJ snaps his neck before spiritual backlash threatens to demolish Glamour Hall.  They all escape in time to see the whole thing collapse, trapping JGY and NMJ a la Guanyin Temple.
-WWX’s name isn’t cleared, but he continues on life as MXY, now as a Gusu Lan disciple because LWJ and LXC welcome him into the sect.  NHS is going to be Chief Cultivator, XXC and SL collect a-Qing and go to start their sect based on merit thing.  WWX stays in Gusu for less than a year when he hears that JC is going into seclusion and he immediately leaves for LP.  Begs before her closed door to let him help her like he hadn’t been able to help their brother.  Reminds her that too many Jiang children have been left by their parents.  Fic ends with the door opening and JC coming out to speak with him, calling him “A-Xian” for the first time in ten years.

Hi....can I ask, MDZS questions: 5, 8, 9, and 12 ...And can I ask (if it's not too much bother), also no. 5, 8, 9, 13 (but it's for TGCF)? Thanks alot.....
Of course! Always happy to get asks 💚
MDZS (spoilers)
5. Moment you fell in love with the series?
Honestly hard to say, my love grew gradually as I went further in the chapters, firstly with the prologue’s foreshadowing of the grand events and tragic past but at the same time knowing that the main character is not gone (because I’m not that keen on true tragedies). Then, I got hooked already in the Mo household arc when wwx showed incredible wit and was constantly several steps ahead of everyone, playing them by their noses, I love puzzles and detective stories so the promise of a plot filled with mysteries excited me. But I think the strongest thing that truly and completely grabbed me by the heart and mercilessly threw me into the “obsessed” bag was the first interactions between wwx and lwj. The clear fondness and care of lwj made me CRAVE for their backstory, I wanted to understand what he was going through and what lead them both to their current place. I wanted to know all of that but also watch wwx realise lwj’s feelings, because I’m very into slow burn and oblivious pining lmao, so this instantly checked my most beloved tropes like it was nothing.
8. Scenes that made you cry?
It’s been a while so I may not remember all, but first and foremost - yi city. Specifically the finale of the flashbacks, when sl was killed then xxc’s soul shredded and a qing murdered by xy. That was the first instance I wept for this novel, and I think it was the second time I cried that year at all. I rarely cry, so I think the only other time (just teary tho) was during the flashback when jc and lwj finally found wwx who was torturing wen chao. Them confronting their broken brother and beloved, whose heart clearly withered after too much pain, the helplessness and despair, the regret... Me watching this character, who I grew fond of and genuinely craved happiness of, driven to madness after months of unimaginable hell was already painful enough, but watching all that from the perspective of his loved ones? Overkill.
That was during the first time I read mdzs, which was over 2 years ago. Idk if I got more emotional or what but when I recently reread the ending I teared up at jc’s unspoken feelings and regrets. And when I started watching cql not long ago I was moved by the scene of wangxian’s first meeting after the reincarnation 😭 idk if it was wuji or sth but a small sob-like sound escaped my mouth then I keysmashed to my friend not a second later lmao. That scene is just so beautiful and emotional when you have the whole picture and know what’s going on in their insides.... 😭
9. Scenes that made you laugh?
Lmaooo it’d prolly be easier to say which didn’t make me laugh. Mxtx’s humor hits just the right spots for me, so I think there aren’t many chapters which didn’t make me laugh. Most of these laughs are probably situational humor, like literally just a sentence of a cheeky summary or a thought etc. But if it’s about the whole scenes, let me think. Some with Apple The Stubborn Donkey, some at Mo household (like the first cheeky interaction between wwx and the servants in mxy’s room), every single scene of drunk lwj™ lmfao, a lot of scenes during the gusu studying period (wwx’s constant teasing of lwj, the wwx-jc-nhs trio shenanigans, wwx vs lq like during lectures etc.). Idk there are just so many I could go on and on, this novel is hilarious.
12. You can give a happy ending to Jian Cheng, Song Lan or Lan Xichen, who do you choose? (edit: I forgot this one xd)
I feared this question the most lmfaoooooooooo. As hard as it is.... I think song lan. I’m very sad for lan xichen and I love jc but both of them, even tho they lost a lot, still have people who love them and care for them and I believe with time they would be fine. Song lan? Damn he suffered so terribly much and he ended up as a walking corpse with his only reason to go on being the hope that the shredded soul of xxc mends in many years. How tragic is that. So yeah, if I could choose one of them then it’d be song lan, poor guy 😭
TGCF (spoilers)
5. Moment you fell in love with the series?
I think it was the ghost bridegroom arc. At that point there was some exposition already (even though still mostly confusing), and I already grew much fond of xie lian and his two ‘helpers’, bad at disguises and jarringly obvious but in a heartwarming way, generally all the characters which appeared even if just side-characters felt very real and that impressed me. Then the whole investigation and solving a mystery with elements of horror started happening which is just *chef’s kiss* exactly up my alley. But what finally put a leash on me and tied me to this novel in the most final way was san lang’s appearance and the interactions between him and xl 🥺 He fascinated me, and I loved his cheeky, eyes-only-for-mc, smart and teasing vibe, exactly my Type xd If I were to pick a specific scene then it was their meeting on the cart after which I remember I stopped putting this book down unless forced to. I am very much fond of this scene to this day.
8. Scenes that made you cry?
BOOK 4. Just. Book 4, you cursed little- Uhhh I think I cried at least 2 times there but at this point my memory of those events melted into a fest of pain and regrets, so I can’t state them clearly xd Possibly ruoye’s creation :’) and wu ming’s sacrifice :’’) and hc’s awakening at the shrine :’’’’’’’’) if you know what I mean. And maybe somewhere else too but idk anymore, it’s just all PAIN
The other instances were the tragic culmination of the venerable of empty words arc :’’) And this scene at the finale when hc gave all his energy to xl :’)
Damn this novel really squeezed my tears out huh
9. Scenes that made you laugh?
Similar to mdzs, this book is a mine of humor for me. Starting with xl’s ascension and all the shenanigans in heaven, mq and fx being themselves, hc’s cheeky comments towards these two like during banyue’s arc when they tried to test him, pei ming my hilarious beloved every scene with him is golden, quan yizhen being adorably derpy and yin yu running away from him and thwacking him with the shovel lmao, the ghost city in general, banyue & pei su cooking at mount tonglu arc. Gods, I love mxtx’s humor and the balance between laughs and pure agony. Incredible.
13. Headcanons?
Hmmm hx checking in on sqx and indirectly helping him out, and sqx slowly healing from his trauma. I like to imagine whether it’d be possible for sqx to ascend again, even tho I remember from the book that it sounded pretty much impossible. But with the heaven being in such a messy state and slowly rebuilt anew, with the need for new gods to fill in the spaces, and with how much sqx helped during the final fight, maaaaybe heaven would grant him this honour with time, make some exception for his crippled cultivation etc. Maybe he would spend some more years helping people as he did, his legend continued spreading, especially after people realised during finale that he was a god, so the story about this fallen god who now helps people in need makes him gather more and more followers until he ascends as the god of beggars, the sick, and the poor. I wonder if by that point he would consider himself worthy of that place and accept it, but if not then I think xl could persuade him that he can help more as a god than mortal. And so, he continues to grow and heal. Anyway, I haven’t thought this through too much, so just throwing random self-indulgent thoughts
(Ask game)

Summary:
~You're not taking proper care of yourself, boy.~
Fusheng moaned low in his throat, arms wrapping around himself as he swayed in the middle of the room.  He couldn't think about that.  He couldn't start down that road.  Not now.  Not now that he was finally doing better.
~I think a hot bath is just what you need.~
With a low cry, Fusheng forced his body back into motion, pacing, pacing, pacing, anything to exhaust himself enough so that he could sleep.  Anything to outrun the memories.  Anything to escape him.
~Maybe you need a little help with that.~
Fusheng lunged for the door to his room, uncaring who might be awake or asleep or pacing the hallway.  He had to get out.  Anywhere that that voice couldn't follow him.  Anywhere where he could breathe.  Anywhere that he couldn't feel those hands all over him with every step he took.
September 19, 2021:
*cracks knuckles* OK, everyone.  Here we go. This last week and a half was a LOT with the holidays and work and just... LIFE, so sorry about the delay, but this chapter is the climax of the story and I wanted to make sure I gave it the time I needed to edit and iron it out properly. All the same warnings apply to this chapter as the rest of the fic...
BUT.
If this fic is the one in this series that most earns its warning, then this CHAPTER is the one in this FIC that most earns its warnings.   PLEASE BE AWARE.
Glossary and detailed warnings in the endnotes, as usual.
...enjoy?  ;D
Detailed warnings behind the cut, as usual, but BEWARE THAT THESE ARE EVEN MORE OF A DOOZY THAN USUAL.
Further details about warnings: The first scene contains a moderate anxiety attack and some mild self-harm (Fusheng pinches himself by accident, then does it again, digging his nails into his skin, when he finds that it helped him regain some clarity).   Mention is made to a phobia developing in regards to bathtubs/bathing.
In the second scene, Fusheng starts out about 75% of the way into a panic attack due to nightmares.  Mention is made of poor self-care habits (e.g., an inability to bathe without inducing a panic attack).  He's partway into flashback territory at this point, with memories of Xu Rui'an's voice acting like intrusive thoughts.  He flees the house into the ocean, and seriously considers letting himself drown.
XXC saves him from that decision, but pushes him over the edge into a panic attack at the same time.  In the discussion that follows, they manage to reconcile somewhat and Fusheng lets slip what Xu Rui'an had done to him that finally broke him.  When they get up to go inside, Fusheng realizes that he's covered in sand and salt and is going to have no choice but to bathe.  He begs Xingcheng to just knock him out with drugs and bathe him while he's unconscious.  Xingcheng refuses, and in his panic, Fusheng finally drops into the flashback that he's been running from all night.
The flashback is a scene of sexual torture. If you want to skip it, it starts here: "But Fusheng was lost, spiraling down into that memory..." and ends here: "Mama!  Yuan Yuan!  Come quick!   Please, I need help!"
Xu Rui'an and the guards force Fusheng down into a bathtub of very hot water, jerking him off at the same time, then pull him up just before he drowns. He orgasms soon after.  He's then forced back into the water.  Xu Rui'an and the guards start teasing him with the sponges, then push him back under the water, pushing several of the sponges inside of him, .They let him up again, then push him back into the water, this time with Xu Rui'an on top of him. Fusheng is forced to give him a blowjob until he blacks out from lack of oxygen.
When Fusheng wakes up he's being held down on a bench. Xu Rui'an starts fucking him with the sponges still inside him, the cold water from the sponges causing pain and cramping. He is forced to orgasm again, but still the rape continues. This is about when he comes out of the flashback.
Final scene contains a panic attack and mild dissociation due to the bathing.
...I think that's everything? O_o;;;

Random headcanon times? Of the road trip trio: what are their big-spoon/little-spoon preferences? What's something XXC does the turns both XY and SL into absolute mush on the inside? Have any of them ever gotten drunk together? What kind of drunk do you imagine each of them is/would be?
Ooooooh! I've been saving this ask for a while, because it was so much fun and I wanted to really take some time thinking about it! Sketches may have happened.
Big spoon/little spoon:
They're not sharing beds (yet) in the story, even though Xiao Xingchen is solidly in the habit of slumping onto Song Lan once asleep - so this is a more in general and for future reference headcanon.
Song Lan prefers to be Big Spoon, since this offers the easiest way out when physical touch becomes a bit too much. This way you can just roll over and to the side when you need a breather.
Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang both adhere to a school of sleeping positions less describable as “spoons”, and more as “starfish wrestling match”. There are limbs everywhere. A limp, graceless celtic knot of anatomy. Some of the poses they end up in don't look humanly possible, some would make a contortionist cry with envy. They're the equivalent of the earphone cords in your pocket. All while dead to the world. (no pun intended)
Tumblr media
When all put together, their sleeping styles are... not entirely compatible. Supposedly they learn to set healthy boundaries and find compromises along the way.
Xiao Xingchen turning Xue Yang And Song Lan into absolute mush, a study:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What kind of drunks they are:
Xiao Xingchen flushes bright red from chest to scalp and gets unbearably giggly when tipsy. Everything is so funny - you guys, listen to this, this is so funny! He also tries to kiss everyone. While still snorting and ugly-giggling.
Song Lan is a quiet drunk, who drinks like he's determined to forget as much as possible as fast as possible. There's a sliver of a window right between “quiet drunk” and “alcohol poisoning” where he may cry on your shoulder and unburden the grief of his heart to a tune that'll have even the most hardened bartender going “yikes.”
Xue Yang gets 190% more Xue Yang. He talks even faster, laughs even more, trains of thought increasingly jumping rails in accordance with physics and conversational red threads not accessible to most human beings. He winds up tighter and tighter until he either passes out, fucks someone or stabs someone.
Have any of them gotten drunk together in the Roadtrip?
Only one instance that I know of, and provided I get to that scene and it plays out the way I currently envision it, it's really sort of heartbreaking. ♥

Housefull 2 MDZS/The Untamed AU
HELLO THERE MY LOVELIES! I’M MAKING A WILD TUMBLR REAPPEARANCE AND I BRING WITH ME SHINY NEW SHOWS I’VE WATCHED AND PERHAPS THE GREATEST AU I’VE EVER WRITTEN DOWN!
Okay, so, I’m going to preface this by saying that I finally watched the Untamed over the past summer and now am slightly obsessed. I am also in the middle of reading the novel and watching the animation, so... that’s something.
Anyway, today, I decided that it would be a good idea to rewatch my favorite childhood film, a little Bollywood comedy titled Housefull 2. Upon rewatching this, I realized that the MDZS characters would fit really well into the convoluted mess of this plot and so I wrote a little bullet pointed AU idea thing.
(I don’t think I’ll have the time to write this, so if anyone wants to use this concept, pleaseeee tag me/tell me about it. Also, if anything like this is already written, pleaseee tell me too, I need the crack content.) (I’m also desi, by the way, so I don’t know much about Chinese culture, so please tell me if anything is offensive or just plain inaccurate.)
So, without further ado, I’ll be presenting this Housefull 2 MDZS/The Untamed AU!
-As per canon, JZX is emotionally constipated and couldn’t communicate until after his engagement with JYL got split up. Having made their sister cry, JC, WWX, and NHS (who gets roped into it) plan to crush JZX for hurting JYL.
-They send WQ to crush JZX by breaking his heart but give her such vague instructions that she accidentally falls for Mianmain.
NHS: “So... who’re we supposed to use to crush this Peacock. I mean, it can’t be any of us.”
WWX: “I don’t know about y’all, but I’d be great at this mission.” *wiggles eyebrows*
JC *rolls eyebrows*: “I think you forgot that mom will have your head if you do something like this.”
JC: “Hey, you remember her from university?”
WWX: “Who?”
JC: “You know, *her*, the one with the needles who could murder anyone and get away with it”
WWX: *laughing* “Holy hell, the Peacock doesn’t know what’s coming for him!”
NHS: “And who might this mystery lady be?” He says, knowing exactly who this mystery lady is.
JC and WWX: “Wen Qing.”
-All the while, JGS thinks that WQ and JZX are engaged because the Idiot Trio sent an envoy ahead that claimed WQ was a head disciple of Jiang and is a replacement for JYL. JGS has now set the engagement of WQ and JZX in August.
-They find out about Mianmian/LQY and WQ too late, and now JC, WWX, and NHS send someone else, LWJ, to crush JZX’s heart.
JC: “You can’t continue to do this, what happened to our deal?!”
WQ: *death glares* “What our deal said was that I needed to woo someone vaguely in relation to the nickname “Peacock” and happened to be in Lanling as payback for JZX breaking your sister’s heart, I don’t think I’m the one who forgot our deal here.”
JC: “And your first thought was that Mianmian/LQY was Peacock?!”
WQ: “She’s pretty and a Jin, so…”
Before there would be a throw down in this place, WWX interrupted: “Okay, WQ it’s alright that you feel for Mianmian/LQY, but who is supposed to help us teach JZX a lesson now?”
NHS: “I don’t know, but it could maybe be someone who’s already close to JZX.”
JC: “That sounds like a horrible ide- Wait, that’s lowkey kinda genius. Do you remember him from university?”
WWX: “Him?”
JC: “Yeah, you know, him, the one who’s entire vocabulary was the syllable “Mn” and whom you pined after for years.”
WWX *blushing like there’s no tomorrow*: “We can’t send him, he’ll probably send me off to do 50 handstands”
JC: “Please, he’s do anything you ask him to”
NHS: *flutters his fan while knowing to an extreme degree what’s going to happen*
-They send WWX as LWJ’s ‘driver’ for him to make sure the plan is on track, but it just ends in LZ/WY pining. JC is also sent there as a businessman since he needs to make sure JGS doesn’t suspect anything too suspicious. At the same time though, because JGS thinks WQ and JZX are engaged and since LWJ spends most of his free time talking to Mianmian/LQY about his hopeless pining, JGS starts to think that Mianmian/LQY and LWJ are to be engaged and plans another engagement. JGS is quick to inform LQR about this and now LQR thinks that his nephew is married to Mianmian/LQY and that they’re getting married in August.
-At some point here, LXC is in Lanling to visit his bud Meng Yao and that’s when JC and LXC begin talking and stuff. (This can be platonic or romantic, I don’t have a personal preference).
-Additionally, this is also when WWX and LWJ begin investigating the happenings of Lanling and discover the extent of an asshole JGS is. They'd probably be reported sporadically and NHS definitely sent this evidence to detectives XXC and Song Lan.
-So far, no one has gotten to properly executing this plan, and JC & WWX are beginning to question things. Because things couldn’t possibly get worse, this is the moment when Madam Yu decides that it’d be a good idea to visit the Jins in order to remind them of their arranged marriage between JYL and JZX. So now, JC and WWX have to drag both LXC and JYL into this convoluted plot because otherwise everything would go horribly wrong. JC, WWX, NHS, JYL, LXC, WQ, LWJ, and Mianmian/LQY (WQ directly told the boys that if they don’t let Mianmian/LQY in on this, she’ll personally shove a needle where it hurts) are in this room together, attempting to processes the absolute mess that has occurred. (Poor JZX is still living obliviously, his father didn’t even tell him that he’s technically engaged to WQ now. JZX is just vibing in confusion and thinks he’s just being buds with LWJ because LWJ is horrible at flirting with anyone that’s not WWX so his job of breaking JZX is... not going well.) In the end, after being on the receiving end of many of JYL’s disappointed looks, JC and WWX convince her to help them with their plot just this once. (She wouldn’t tell anyone that she was secretly pleased, but hey, JYL kept her vengeance deep, deep down low and deserved to exercise it just this once.)
-(it is important to note here that in this AU, Madame Yu doesn’t know what JZX looks like)
-The plan would be that LXC would (reluctantly) pretend to be JZX in front of Madam Yu. Additionally, Madame Yu thinks the actual JZX is NHS (because JC panicked and that’s the first name he could come up with when Madam Yu asked who was that kid if LXC was JZX). This was to drive JGS off their tails as he still believed that WQ is engaged to JZX now. (He did email LQR about this as well who now thinks his nephews are now engaged to JYL and Mianmian/LQY, respectively, and are going to be married that August.) This is the part where WWX and LWJ finally start realizing that their feelings are mutual after a pep talk from Mianmian/LQY, LXC, and WQ (who’s pep talk sounded more like a shovel talk) for LWJ and from JC, NHS, and JYL for WWX. This is also when Mianmian/LQY and WQ grow closer and also decide that the rest of the group is useless and team up with NHS to knock some sense into JZX. Finally, JZX becomes less emotionally constipated and confesses to JYL, and because WWX, JYL, and JC think that an intervention from the scariest trio (WQ, Mianmian/LQY, NHS) is apt punishment, they call an end to their payback. (Also partially due to JZX having character growth as different characters grilled him throughout this AU). While this is great for our mains, it can only cause a bunch of shenanigans because of the way the parental figures interpret this situation.
-JGS and Madame Jin think the pairings are: WQ/JZX, LQY/LWJ, LXC/JYL, WWX/NHS
-Madame Yu thinks the pairings are: JZX (except it’s LXC’s version of JZX)/JYL, LWJ/WWX, LQY/WQ, and (maybe?) JC/NHS (except it’s JZX who got confused for NHS)
-LQR thinks the pairings are: WQ/JZX, LQY/LWJ, and LXC/JYL
-Meanwhile, the pairings actually are: JZX/JYL, LWJ/WWX, LQY/WQ, and (maybe?) JC/LXC
-In conclusion, they’re all utterly fucked. Therefore, they have to bring everyone into this convoluted plot now, and finally JZX’s experiences over the past months make a little more sense to him. While discussing this mess they’ve created, WWX has an idea.
WWX: “Okay, so, looking at the actual chart of who everyone thinks is who, the biggest disparity is between Madam Yu and JGS’s viewpoints, right? What if we just removed Madam Yu from the equation, make Madam Jin and Madam Yu have a falling out so that Madam Yu won’t be invited to the wedding so that we can focus on one of the false interpretations of all the relationships happening.”
JC: “Madam Jin and Madam Yu have been the best of friends, how are we supposed to make them hate each other?”
JYL: “I mean, we could stage something, a betrayal of some sort.”
NHS: “I’m liking the way you think.”
-So through this plot and NHS’s concerning amount of connections, our group succeeds in breaking apart Madam Yu and Madam Jin’s friendship. JC and WWX also manage to worm their way into convincing the Jins to let JYL marry LXC to “spite Madam Yu’s wish of combining the Jiang and Jin families.” Because of JGS arranging and emailing parents throughout this fic, JYL, JZX, LXC, Mianmian/LQY, WQ, NHS, WWX, and LWJ are basically set to be married in August, except it’s to the wrong person! Soon enough, the wedding day arrives and the gang has a plan: they’ll dress the exact same and have the most elaborate and disruptive headpieces so that their faces are covered.
(Note: Instead of NHS being part of the people getting married as it should be, JC is replaces him for the actual ceremony. Since the our marrige folks have their faces covered, nobody really notices that JC replaced NHS and is marrying LXC. This can be either because of a marriage of convenience to combine companies, or out of actual feelings. I’m cool with either interpretation in my head. Meanwhile, NHS is out in the crowd and People didn’t him because of his surprisingly useful camouflage fan.)
-And so, the group sets NHS as their distraction while JC pretends to be NHS for the wedding ceremony. NHS basically knocks into the most expensive vase he can find so that most of the parental figures turn around, giving the group getting married the opportunity to switch places with one another until they’re in the right spot. So, a bunch of stuff happens, Madam Yu barges in to yell about how disgraceful it is for the Jins to go on with this marriage even though they broke the engagement in the first place and betrayed the trust of the Jiang corporation. Madam Yu also just, airs out JGS’s dirty laundry in a real badass way.
-It’s all chaotic. Hell breaks loose. JGS goes batshit crazy and starts bringing our firearms. And so, basically, everyone ends up hiding behind pillars and stuff, though, eventually, after everyone has to run out of their hiding spot’s because Su She cannot shut the fuck up and keeps getting the other’s exposed, they all pile behind JGS in the world’s worst game combined game of Hide & Seek and Slither.io. It all finally ends when JGS gets arrested for a shit ton of crimes, and everything finally ends with a joint wedding between 8 people, except this time it’s with the right partners.
So, yeah, that’s the AU that I wrote in a dazed craze in the past 2 hours. I hope it was at least partially understandable. I hope y’all have fun with it! Again, if you know of a fanfic that’s got a similar energy or want to write something similar, please tell me, I need more fanfiction. Also, that last scene is basically a direct copy of this scene from the movie Housefull 2. (I’m sorry though, I can’t find an english subbed version of the scene. :(

The one(s) who never stop searching
I sometimes wonder whether Hanguang Jun grew up with a role model, is there anyone he looks up to, or that just doesn’t exist because LWJ is too busy being admired and respected by pretty much everyone else (apart from his biggest anti-fan Su She).
Of course, he adores his soulmate. BUT, now rewatching the Coffin Town arc, I just really want to write something about LWJ and his admiration for Xiao Xingchen/Song Lan.
Tumblr media
LWJ first met XXC and SL in episode 10 when checking out Chang clan’s manor in Yue Yang with WWX and JC. The duo captured Xue Yang there, and introduced themselves to the gang.
‘Xiao Xingchen, the moon in the breeze. Song Zichen, the Gentry despite the frost. Your decency is known to us’. This was probably the longest sentence LWJ said to another human being since the beginning of the series. Even his eyes scream ‘I’m a fan’ and makes WWX turn around in surprise.
Tumblr media
During their later conversation as NHS and JGY arrive, XXC and SL talk about how they’re not interested in bloodlines and just cherish those with same ambitions. LWJ has obviously been listening very carefully, and even actually asks where they cultivate and how others can find them. I mean, since LWJ has not really opened up by that point, it’s truly impressive coming across new characters that manage to generate so much interest from LWJ within a very short time. Let me repeat. he even ASKS PERSONAL QUESTIONS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His admiration becomes VERY clear just a few minutes after during the farewell scene. It’s probably only the 3rd time LWJ gives us a mellow facial expression since episode 1. He watches on as XXC and SL depart - quite a long look with a mix of emotions: appreciating, pondering, wondering, with a tiny bit of sorrow, somehow. He was clearly in his own world until WWX calls him back down to earth. He then gives his soulmate a soft look before nodding and following the gang. WWX clearly senses that LWJ has something in mind, as they walk, he turns and looks at LWJ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is how I interpret LWJ’s thought process in that sequence. As he looks on XXC and SL leaving, it feels like he has a bunch of ‘What if...’ questions in his head. Probably something along the line of ‘Darn, wouldn’t it be nice to just roam the world with your lifelong confidant, protect the weak, exorcise the evil without the burden of playing clan politics? What if I was not restricted by 3,500 rules at Gusu? What if I could actually live a life as in my name WangJi - to not seek fame or wealth, forget about worldly matters, and be at peace with the world?’. As soon as WWX calls him he turns around and.... ‘What if I could live that life with this person?’.
Tumblr media
I’m convinced from this point, LWJ already has a vision in his head about going on adventures with his soulmate. We know he eventually got his dream come true from episode 34 onward, but it was a very very long and painful way for him to get there. At the end of episode 35, when filling WWX in about what happened to XXC and SL, LWJ was visibly upset which led him into having himself a drink. Some may argue that his frustration is due to people still shitting on WWX after all these years, or about the injustice related to Jin clan and Xue Yang rather than XXC and SL. I still think that being reminded of the duo’s tragic fate when talking to WWX does have some impact on LWJ’s emotion.
Tumblr media
It was a clear case of extreme clan-related injustice that brought so much pain to the lives of 2 people who are not even attached to any sect whatsoever, 2 people who just purely wanted to protect the world from evil while not taking side. They were simply caught up in the whole major clans corruption shamble, and clearly the last people on earth who deserved to die/gone missing because of the clans’ mess. For someone who has long admired their decency, how would that NOT frustrate LWJ - someone who’s already in a long battle against injustice that screwed over his soulmate’s life?
Tumblr media
Fast forward to the end of the Coffin Town arc in episode 39, it’s now revealed that Xue Yang murdered everyone at Snow White Pavilion, turned SL blind and led XXC to give his eyes to SL. As LWJ was searching for WWX, elsewhere, someone else was also looking for their other half. Unfortunately, SL arrived to find XXC being deceived by Xue Yang, and basically all of them ended up with tragic fates. Once all of the misunderstanding is finally clarified, we find WangXian and the junior disciples in front of A Qing’s grave. Once again, WWX notices LWJ being miles away in his own thoughts. He looks up and stares into his soulmate’s beautifully surreal face. It has an odd sense of relief in his vision, mixed with a bit of fear - a ‘close call’ type of fear, like... ‘Something even more awful could have happened’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LWJ then mumbles ‘Fortunately...’ to a confused WWX and probably because of censorship, we never get to hear the end of that sentence. Putting in the context of everything that just happened to them, it’s not too difficult to work out that LWJ was acknowledging how extremely lucky he was being able to reunite with WWX safe and sound. Sadly, XXC and SL did not get that chance.
Tumblr media
They then returned to XXC’s coffin to find SL. LWJ looks on, apologetically, as WWX gives SL what’s left of XXC’s spiritual cognition. Just a quick side note, I cry EVERY SINGLE TIME watching SL write in the soil with this sword ‘Roam this world with Frostwork. Exorcise evil beings alongside Xingchen’.
LWJ then looks up to SL and it feels so strongly that he wanted to say something. He’s been there - he saw his soulmate falling off the cliff. He started to invest most of his time searching for WWX, from appearing whenever chaos was to communicating with spirits asking for WWX’s whereabouts. 16 years of mourning the dead and living with the pain, feeling incomplete and empty without his counterpart.
Tumblr media
LWJ is the only person who can relate to SL. And that’s probably why he knows there’s nothing to be said that could ease the pain. He proceeds to respectfully present SL with XXC’s Frostwork and bow.
Tumblr media
LWJ, with sadness in his eyes,  watches SL walk away, this time without XXC by his side. The scene cuts to WWX thinking to himself ‘I wonder if the two of them would be able to meet each other again’. The same thought must have gone through LWJ’s mind as well. WangXian then exchange a mournful look - if only the camera has stuck around longer for us right here, as I’m sure, this could have been the ‘We should be thankful that we are still standing in front of each other’.

I really appreciate The Untamed crew setting a good 3-episode arc aside to tell the tragic story of XXC/SL/XY the best way they could. It’s also a good idea to change the timeline of certain event so that XXC and SL cross path with WangXian in WWX’s first life, as it lets us see from very early on that LWJ is not just a rigid guy to follow rules all the time. He doesn’t have all the answers to everything in his life just because he reads all the books at Gusu. He does have certain insecurity and curiosity about a different path, now that there’s someone in his life that make it worth considering. It also provides more context to the unfortunate contrary between the fates of WangXian and SongXiao.

If you’re also impressed with this arc as much as I am, I would strongly recommend checking out the novel as it tells us a lot more about SongXiao origin story and how their feud with Xue Yang started. Besides the main couple whom all of us obviously stan, this storyline definitely impressed me the most rather than anything else. I really wish one day Song Lan would succeed in nursing Xiao Xingchen’s spiritual recognition back to wholeness and they would meet again.

Who is in your Top 5 favorite MXTX characters and what is it about them that just *hits* you?
IT TOOK ME ALL DAY but i had FEELINGS. These are in no particular order
Lan Wangji - First one I fell in love with. LOve someone who’s protective (and a lil jelly) and also doesnt talk except when absolutely necessary bc thats meeee. LWJ is over here like *assumes people already know what he knows* like “yeah I bet he remembers the last thing i told him before he died”, meanwhile people (namely wwx) are misunderstanding his intentions and he’s misunderstanding WWX’s intentions and ahhh!!! too relatable!!!  He’s also gorgeous okay and powerful and rich but also just Very In Love I!!! Cry!! Especially in the extras. DOMESTIC WANGXIAN
Luo Binghe (you’ll notice a pattern here, my faves are the Overprotective Tops) AND also shoutout to LBH’s one and only husband SQQ, they’d be tied together at the number one spot but on their own only LBH makes the top 5 - God I just. Okay so first I fell in love with his babie self. Bunhe was wayy too adorable for his own good. Then LBH from the novel had me very frustrated and SCARED because how are they going to end up together!! This has a happy ending, right? RIGHT?? Because LBH did not feel like the type of character who’d get a happy ending, too possessive and emotionally immature (this is not to say I didnt like him. i just feared for him) BUT then, SQQ CHOOSES him, him!! Despite his flaws, he sees the potential for growth in him and says hey!! we’re not perfect but I think we can make this work AND THEY DOOO. The extras really solidified for me how much bingqiu loves each other (and with it my love for LBH). Friend said “theyre the most realistic couple” AND THEYRE RIGHT. [This is where I had a bighuge paragraph on why i love BQ but Ive omitted it bc this is about LBH] Ahem, but back to LBH, I love a character who loves Desperately. The scenes when SQQ “dies” and LBH cradles his lifeless body are OHHMAN, BUT ALSO when he sees him in his dreamscape and tries to wipe the blood on his face but only makes it worse aND ALSO when he’s just been reunited with SQQ after he got swallowed and the first thing LBH does is Kiss him!!!! AAHH head full, too many thoughts!!! Let’s move on!!!
Shi Wudu - The husband… Man where to even start… running away with his little brother, forgoing morality for his sibling, straight up rewriting fate for his sibling. The CONCERN, the WORRY, the LOVE, and yes, the Slight possessiveness!!
All of Yi City gang - (am I cheating? Yes) I just cant put one above another… XXC was probably my second fave after LWJ buT ALSO Song Lan and his relationship with XXC is SO TRAGIC and XY is the one tying it all together and then A-QING, my girl, I didnt know I loved her so much until way after finishing the novel. Yi City would not be the same without her. THEY’RE A SET DO NOT SEPARATE
EDIT because I realized I forgot 5. Wei Wuxian! I was going back and forth between him, Yin Yu, Shen Qingqiu, Mo Xuanyu and mmaybe Hua Cheng, and I have several reasons to like them all a lot! I think Shen Qingqiu and Wei Wuxian are eiher tied here or very close together. But Wei Wuxian is just. The most consistently likeable? I love SQQ a LOT and he’s completely different from any main character i could have expected and he had me in stitches laughing, BUT Wei Wuxian is just. Precious. He’s so motherly with the juniors, such a good friend, so loyal, so BRIGHT, and ofc his YP days are So. Amazing. Man, the contrast!!! It’s chilling, absolutely chilling. But my favorite side of him is him going full mama hen with the juniors. God he should be tied with his husband. Im so happy for him. Every time I remember his post-canon self, so happy and warm and well fed and loved and thoroughly fucked I just get so !!! yes!!! he deserves it so much!!! Wei Wuxian man, SO GOOD
But honestly you could say that about all of these characters and their respective partners (in SWD’s case, zam’s chosen partner for him, his brother). I truly feel like without their respective Others they would not appeal to me as much as they do. Except maybe LWJ and A-Qing. I can multiship them and do mean things to them and it makes me giddy instead of sad.
