Been reading a lot of twitter fics recently and its got me thinking how the Avengers would actually use twitter
(written by someone who has never had a twitter lol)
Bruce — i feel like he wouldnt even have a twitter and if he did its because Tony set one up for him. He either never touches it or its on private
Tony — being a celebrity and all i feel like Pepper or someone else was responsible for the majority of his account. And then he actually got into twitter and started posting whatever he wanted. He's not actually all that active on it. Still has a massive following though
Steve — used to pretend he didnt know how it worked when Tony made him a account. He has periods of lots of activity mixed with periods of no activity. He says a lot of political stuff but the majority of his content is everyday stuff. His most popular content is whenever he tweets about learning something basic or watching a old classic. Has a massive following
Natasha — Tony also made her a account but being a spy and all she never uses it. Whenever she does come on its to embarrass or bully her teammates. Massive following
Clint — has a private account and that was only to stay in touch with his family while he was working at SHIELD. Tony couldnt find it because his account and his family's accounts were under fake names so Tony made him a account with everyone else. He only has like five original tweets and the rest are retweets. Is one of those people who's on all the time but never actually presses the like button. Has a large following solely because he happens to be a superhero
Thor — the only Avenger other than Tony to have already had a twitter (Jane and Darcy helped set it up). He knows how it works but doesnt quite grasp when he should use it. He'll try and tweet when he's off-world and doesnt understand that its not posting. He has a phone but he doesnt carry it around with him so pretty much all of his actually working twitter activity comes from him on a ipad on the couch because he's bored in the middle of day because everyone he knows has a job or something. His tweets either make sense or they dont. Has a massive following anyways
Alright now that the mains are out of the way lets talk about the others
Peter Parker — definitely has two or three accounts. His Peter account is private and his Spidey account is public. His third is either a Peter account May doesnt know about or a "intern" account where he can post about stuff that happens with the Avengers when he's not in the suit (so the Avengers don't figure out who he is and his school friends dont know he actually hangs out with the Avengers). His private account is normal high school aged twitter user stuff, Spidey account is mostly just public announcements but he does Q and As pretty frequently, and the Intern account is a lot like Natasha's in the sense its almost exclusively embarrassing content of or light bullying of the Avengers. Spidey has a massive following and Intern has a large amount. Theres a lot of controversy over whether the Intern account is real despite Tony Stark saying it is because all Stark employees have to sign a form saying they won't talk about what happens at work on any social platforms
Rhodey — uses twitter like a normal person. He didnt have that big a following until he got a suit. He debated turning his account private but decided not to. He does use his account as a platform occasionally
Bucky — he's like Steve, it took him a while to get into it but when he's on it he'll be on it all day. Has the same types of tweets/tweet ratio as Steve. Has no trouble embarrassing Steve online. A large following, almost entirely made of Captain America fans
Sam — a normal person twitter. Sometimes he posts about Steve or the other Avengers and thats gotten him a lot of followers
Dr. Strange — has a twitter but is never on it
Wong — has a private twitter with more followers then Strange. Will never let Strange know he has a twitter
Scott — Luis made him a twitter to help distract him after he got out of prison. He has like 15 followers but posts like he has 1.5 million followers. Really wants to make a Ant-Man account
Hope — has a twitter but for work
Hank — has a twitter but doesnt use it
Luis — a normal person twitter
Shuri — only one from Wakanda to have a Twitter. She has a lot of fun knowing people cant stop her and don't know she's talking about them (cough T'Challa cough). Im not sure if she's using her real name though. When the outreach program begins (i forgot what it was called) she makes several accounts for it
Fury — does not have a twitter
Maria — was only allowed a twitter to monitor the Avengers. Posts a few "normal" things to make the account look real (especially after SHIELD went down)
Carol — does not have a twitter. Enjoys looking at tweet screenshots though
Shaun — a normal person twitter. Private account
Katy — a normal person twitter
Did i forget anyone? I feel like im forgetting someone. Many if this gets some notes i'll do a TikTok account one
EDIT: I FORGOT WANDA AND VISION AHHHHH
Wanda — has a private account because she's smart and values privacy (also scared of public disapproval (i.e. CA:CW)). Was thinking of going public because all the Avengers (minus Bruce but he's not around) have public accounts but Clint recommended she wait till she was adult to get a public account if she wasnt sure about it now. She posted a lot of justice and political stuff when she was in Sokovia
Vision — Actually made himself a account because he wanted to feel included. Does not need a phone to tweet he can do it "mentally".

in the issue of the clone saga where Dock Ock was kille py Caine, The good doctor finally confirmed Peters idendity.. While deciding that this didnt really change the overarching dynamics between the two of them(unlike the goblin where their entire relationship is DEFINED by the fact that GG will use the knowledge to fuck over Pete at every opportunity) as Dock wants to thriump over SPIDEY with his wits and skills, not beat peter parker with simple knowledge of his identity and blackmail thereof
continued:
my question is, if Ock hadn't died that very issue, do you think this dynamic could have worked in the long term? With otto (or at least the character he had become by the 90's and before the 2000's) serving as a main villain that, though dangerous and ambitious, was also very unlike the green Goblin, being too classy to debase himself by targeting Peter's family and loved ones to achieve victory over the spider? or do you think it simply didn't work with the overall character Otto is at his core?
I was actually just thinking about this the other day. You watched the new 'Atop the Fourth Wall' video, too? XD
For those who haven't read the comics or seen that video, the storyline starts with Spidey poisoned from an attack from another super-villain that he recently defeated. He collapses, and Doctor Octopus (Otto Octavius) arrives to develop a cure so that Spidey can survive and they can continue their battles, as Ock wants to defeat his enemy himself some day and doesn't want to seem him succumb to another villain in such an inglorious fashion. (This gets stretched out across four issues with filler and foreshadowing of other plots.)
I had only ever heard very concise summaries of this story before that video, and I was always a bit confused about why Ock saves Spider-Man. None of the stories I'd read previously made Ock seem like he values Spidey at all, and my impression is that he completely hates Spidey for denying his greatness and ruining his plans. My impression of Ock was always that he's a monster, albeit not in the cruel, obsessive way that Green Goblin is. Norman Osborn will try to ruin every aspect of Spidey's life purely for the pleasure of it. Otto, on the other hand, will wrangle himself an invitation to dinner at Aunt May's place, enjoy the meal and be gregarious company, and then have a quiet word with Peter while May gets the dessert about how clearly it's time Spider-Man retires if he doesn't want his family and friends to come to harm.
One can argue about whether Ock would hurt Aunt May specifically, but I do think he's more than capable of threatening the civilians in Peter's life in general. Even Spider-Man 2's Ock, the most sympathetic portrayal I think I've ever seen, has him threatening to kill Mary Jane if Peter doesn't somehow produce Spider-Man for him. But Ock doesn't know that Peter is Spider-Man, there.
So that leaves the matter of whether that's how Ock wants to win against Spidey, specifically. He does have his pride, but I never thought that carried to the point of valuing a personal rivalry with Spidey. If Ock defeats Spidey by learning his identity and threatening his loved ones, clearly Spidery is shackled by weakness that Ock himself either doesn't have or has more effectively protected, mwa ha ha!
Also, Ock is perhaps most famous as the founder of the Sinister Six, the super-villain team assembled purely to kill Spider-Man. And in their first appearance, Ock gives the other members a fair shot to kill Spidey before him! So that kind of personal victory isn't something he craves. I suspect that if another villain succeeded in killing Spidery, Ock would simply kill that villain and gloat to himself that he's even greater than both of them!
But that was back in the 60's. Did Ock evolve to the point where he took personal value in fighting Spider-Man?
Well, if he did, it wasn't in any of the comics I ever read. My impression of this storyline is that it was a quick attempt to make Ock an even more meaningful and sympathetic character right before they killed him off (spoilers, I guess, but he got better and now everybody tries to forget that entire era) to promote a new edgier villain. The fact that most subsequent portrayals go back to him being a monster -- whose whole shtick is that his few scruples and moments of honor are a surprise when they surface -- tell me that no storytellers were really invested in the concept, so it must have been a throwaway purely to help sell his death.
So what do I think of the concept in isolation? Is it worth bringing back?
I probably would have said 'No' if not for the Ultimate Spider-Man comics. (I think I recall the USM cartoon, which was not otherwise based on the comics, tried to do something similar in the finale, but it really was too rushed and out of the blue to work at all.) There, Ock starts as a monster and tries to keep things impersonal, but as time goes on, he does develop a kind of investment in his rivalry with Spider-Man. What sells it, though, is that this version has Ock involved in the technology that gives Spidey his powers and quickly figures out Spidey's identity, so Ock starts to take pride in the fact that Peter is so capable. Ock finds a kind of solace that even if his plans all failed, the only one who was able to stop him was another of his own creations! And why not invest in the more successful creation? That, I think, is something works well for the character, turning his pride and self-interested worldview into an avenue to developing affection for Spidey.
It helps that this culminates in the finale for Peter Parker's adventures, and both of them are soon dead.
(Spoilers, I guess, for Miles Morales becoming Spider-Man after Peter Parker dies. No one knows about that storyline, right?)
In a medium where superheroes have to keep having adventures until the end of time with only the illusion of change in play, complete with keeping around a lineup of popular villains who must always be available to escape from jail and bedevil our hero again, having a major villain with boundaries can be both boon and bane. Obviously, killing the hero isn't going to facilitate that formula, so a villain who will sometimes help the hero survive can be a nice writing crutch. On the other hand, it does limit the stories that can be told, and risks making the villain kind of toothless if they're not really trying. Keeping a villain in that state, in a world that's supposed to be somewhat realistic and not the camp fantasy of the Adam West Batman show, can be a very tricky balancing act. Two different writers could have two very different sets of scruples that Ock would adhere to, making for a villain who sometime seems like a jobber and who sometimes comes across as a serial killer with an obsessive love for the hero. (Oh, hello, Joker. I didn't see you there. Who are you today: Cesar Romero or Heath Ledger?)
So while I think it can be a rewarding character choice in a finite story -- Spider-Man 2, the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, etc -- I think it's probably unsustainable for ongoing comics.
But hey, if a comic series lasts long enough, probably every variant of a character will be written at some point, so why not experiment sometimes? It's not like comic books are known for a bastion of consistency. And if it does prove to be a sustainable balancing act, then you have something new and cool.
So I guess my final answer comes down to: It depends on the writers who get to carry Spider-Man forward.

Hey so I finished CC and am thinking about how Maas has changed love interests for her mc before, but I really like Hunt and Bryce. A lot. Hunt is very different from any character we've seen from Maas, and he's just so fucking good. Idk, thoughts?
Oh man Nonnie. I’ve only read through the book once, but I don’t currently think Hunt is endgame. AT LEAST NOT YET. (Oh heeeeey Aidas!)
Their relationship was great but there was a LOT of baggage and life experiences that Hunt missed out on, so I can’t imagine he’s normal after being freed. Like. He’s always existed for a cause or because he had to exist for a cause. (Idk if that makes sense?) But now it’s like he has been newly discharged from the military. Taking orders are all he knows how to do. Now he has to make decisions for himself. And idk if you know anyone who gets out of the military after doing that kind of structured “obey orders” kind of job for so long, but it can be rough.
And I know he was a slave, but the same idea applies. Someone told him when to wake up, what to eat, where to go, what time to be there, and what to do. He hasn’t made his own decisions since BEFORE his dead lover was around. (And that relationship didn’t sound healthy to me.)
ON TOP OF THAT, Hunt fucking threw his friends under the bus when he got caught by Bryce and Micah. (Can we argue that they’re not his real friends? Sure. Go for it. But he trusted them enough to plot against Micah.) Sarah J Maas VALUES THE EVER LOVING SHIT out of friendships. She did not just throw that scene into the book for no reason.
And she did not leave out a sex scene for no reason either.
Now. Where I WAIVERED on this was toward the end when Hunt CLEARLY had a dramatic “shift” of SOME KIND. Now, again, I’ve only read the book once, so this opinion could TOTALLY change. But there was a moment when it felt like Hunt honestly loved Bryce. And cared for her. But intertwined in that was a sense of unchecked/runaway devotion. And THAT struck me. Because that’s not healthy. And that’s what he spent a lot of time explaining to us he did in the past with his first lover (even though he didn’t seem to see it that way). So. I’m torn.
On one hand I want them to have lots of therapy and growth and to probably spend some time apart so that Hunt can discover who he is OUTSIDE of following someone/a cause. (Bryce kind of became his “cause” at the end a little bit to me. He was suddenly super devoted to her and got blown up. That can be a decision an act of love, sure. But it can also be a decision made out of a lot old festering wounds you don’t realize you have.) I think if they’re going to work out, then Hunt has a journey of self discovery ahead of him. And that kind of journey you have to have space to do alone. Whether that’s a break up or just travel time alone—idk. I just don’t think he has an identity outside of taking orders and being Mr. Lightning for someone else. And that means he’s likely in the near future going to start to feel inferior or worthless or not whatever, and he’s going to take that out in someone else. (If he doesn’t get help.)
Also. Very early on in the book, when the princes of hell were randomly mentioned, I said to myself “LOL if one of those princes ever shows up on page, then it’s anyone’s game.” Then Aidas showed up. And then we found out that he and Bryce have an odd history that has resulted in her feeling he’s trustworthy to some extent. And then he showed up again at the end. So IDK.
Another thing. I can’t get over how Hunt acted when Bryce confronted him on the boat. He spent a lot of time lying to her before that moment. You can certainly change in a few days and I’m not saying he didn’t love her. But his love for her didn’t outweigh his need to find a way to be free. AND IT SHOULDNT. But when you love someone and you want to be with them, you consider their feelings and how your actions effect them. Hunt realized too late that he didn’t do that (and he kinda course corrected to an extreme at the end). And lying to her by omission was not love. That was selfishness. All he had to do was tell Bryce what he knew, let her process it, then they could have planned to get a hold of the Synth and try it or not try it. OR ASK HYPAXIA WHO HAS CLEARLY BEEN PLANNING A REBELLION OR SOMETHING WITH THARION FOR A WHILE NOW. I mean Hypaxia STRAIGHT UP let them both know she could get rid of his dark mark. WHY DIDNT he try to exhaust that potential avenue?
(And as I type this I’m reminded that what Aidas said about Hunts halo sent my spidey senses tingling. If hunt and Bryce are endgame I wonder if there will be a journey that has to do with that “mark” thing he said. I need to reread.)
So yeah. Those are my current thoughts. Sorry they’re kind of jumbled and crazy. Haha.

I’m here to prove that Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-man/peter parker in The Amazing Spider-Man is objectively the best love action adaptation of the character. In this essay I will....(yes this is really happening)
Edit: 10/20/20- i want to indulge myself in spiderman content but finding non mcu spiderman content is exhausting so imma update this instead
TL;DR
Andrew Garfield is my favorite of the 3 Spider-Man actors. TAS’s Peter is more fun and dynamic than the cookie cutter “shy introverted nerd that has a crush on a girl who’s way out of his league” Peter in Tobey Maguire’s movies. I enjoy Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character, but hate the way Disney has written the movies.  I enjoy the characters, plot, and humor of The Amazing Spider-Man far more than the other 2, and i deeply wish we had gotten the third movie with the canon BIder-Man of Andrew’s (and my) dreams.
[DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NOT SEEN THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 OR ANY MCU SPIDERMAN MOVIES OUTSIDE OF CLIPS AND REVIEWS ITS ALSO BEEN A VERY HOT MINUTE SINCE IVE SEEN A TOBEY MAGUIRE MOVIE]
Characterization
Most arguments against Andrew Garfield’s Spidey( AG’s from now on) begin and ends with “he was a good Spider-Man but a bad Peter Parker”. This references an outdated post comparing all three Spidey actors.(Id attach the image here but i dont want the post to be too long(thats a lie this is so long what am i doing with my life)) The post also claims that Tobey played a good Peter and a poor Spidey; and that Tom is good at both “roles”.(Honestly I think it seems silly that this seems obey the “third time’s the charm” rule but thats just me).  Most people using this seem to be Tobey stans who have forgotten or ignored the rest of the post funnily enough, but the ones that go further into the WHY AG is a poor Peter are also incorrect. This argument also ignores the idea that there can be more than one version of Peter Parker which is blatantly incorrect.  Just look at Into the Spiderverse or the PS4 game; these provide 4(5 if you count the pig) versions of Peter themselves, and that doesnt even include the comics.
Arguments that go further in depth claim that the AS Peter is too cool or well liked by his peer to be a “true” Peter Parker. The evidence for this seems to be that Peter has a skateboard.(which what? didnt realize that having a skateboard would instantly make you cool brb guys). Adding to that i dont really see where people get the idea that Peter is popular or well liked. While looking for complaints i found this qutoe from reddit(theyve since deleted it looks like but i’ll add a link in the notes) “He's angsty, pretty socially awkward, has an aptitude for science, and is kind of an outsider. He gets bullied by Flash and he gets his ass kicked after trying to stand up to Flash. He isn't a "cool" person in any way (until the ending, in which he's best buds with Flash, so I'll give you that). While Maguire is more accurate to the 60s comics where Peter in high school is just a fucking loser with basically no friends, in the ultimate comics, Peter is more of the kid who has a small amount of friends, but isn't popular.”. Honesty i fully agree with this because once again, other versions of a character are allowed to exist. You can dislike one version, but its silly to dislike something for not being exactly like another thing.
Ive also heard that Peter isnt “nerdy enough” in this movie which really doesnt make any sense considering the entire plot happens because Peter was looking into some of his parents’ research. If he wasn't interested in looking further into his father’s work what reason would he have to go to Oscorp where he’s bitten by the spider? Why would he have become Dr. Conner’s assistant? If he wasn’t intelligent how did he develop the web shooters?(something that Tobey!Peter doesn't have to do out of plot convenience might i add).
Another complaint i see is that the quips he uses in the movie(the first one specifically it seems) makes him seem like an asshole. Honestly thats a fair complaint, but i think its a good bit of characterization; espcially if he does get better about it in the second movie like the internet suggests. The Peter in this movie is a rightfully angsty teen; of course he acts a bit of an ass to criminals(also i feel like its important to mention that he’s like that to criminals? its not like hes being a dick for no reason).
Compare this with the Tobey Maguire(TM) movies. Like i said i haven’t seen these in awhile but as far as i’m aware TM’s Peter doesn't really do anything particularly nerdy in the film? I may have forgotten something( ok in the scene before he gets bitten he knows a cool spider fact) but he doesn’t have to invent the web-shooters because they came with his powers and he’s only at Oscorp in the first place because it’s a school field trip that he appears to be taking photos for. This Peter does fit the definition of outcast(friendless and bullied for it), but honestly i just dont like him. He’s weird and something about the character makes me feel like i should be a little grossed out every time he looks at MJ at the beginning of the movie.
I honestly don’t have any complaints for Tom Holland’s(TH’s)Spidey. Tom is a great actor and from what ive seen i enjoy his portrayal of the character.( He made me cry when i character i actively dislike died).
Story
I cant really say much for TAS story. It’s interesting but nothing special really. However, there is one scene that i don’t think i’ve seen anything like since( the closest would probably be the train scene in the original trilogy).
The crane scene. Early in the film Peter saves a boy from a car that has fallen off of a bridge, and at the end of the movie this becomes relevant again when it is uncertain that Peter will be able to get to the lizard to stop him in time.(as Peter is already injured and pretty far from the lizard’s location). The boy’s father is then revealed to be a construction worker who recognizes that Spider-man is going to need help to get to the lizard; he remembers how Spider-Man saved his son and organizes the rest of the construction workers to build a path out of crane arms for SM to swing from. All of them are putting themselves in danger by not evacuating, but SM’s actions in the first act of the film motivate them to do what’s right.
I love this scene primarily because it highlights something that i think is a really important part of Spider-Man’s character; his connection to the people he saves. SM is often shown interacting with and chatting with the people he has saved after the fact. One comic shows Peter accidentally scaring some bullies and then taking the time to ride the bus to school with them to continue their conversation and educate the students on bullying.( There’s definitely more but this is off the top of my head).
Another scene in TAS that i love is shortly before the crane scene when Peter is originally attempting to make his way across the city to stop the lizard, and he is shot down by the police. They manage to unmask him before Peter comes to his senses( he had just been shot and fallen pretty far out of the sky in his defense). From there Peter is able to deal with the police while keeping any of them from getting a good look at his face. The one cop he cant take out happens to be Gwen Stacey’s father who had previously had an argument with Peter about Spider-Man(Peter obviously on SM’s side and Mr. Stacey against SM). Peter turns and allows Captain(?) Stacey to see his face. I believe that this is an example of an unwilling identity reveal done right. i really enjoyed this moment because Peter had just shown that he likely could have gotten out of this encounter with his identity in tact as he had just taken down however many men. This implies that it was an active choice on Peter’s end to trust that Captain Stacey would ultimately do the right thing and allow Peter to go fight the Lizard, rather than a final desperate attempt to get away unscathed. Whether or not this interpretation of the scene is correct or not it still gives the character a bit more agency than some versions have done with their identity reveals.
In Spider-Man 2 Peter starts to lose his powers because he’s having internal conflict about wether or not he should be Spider-Man. Honestly thats kinda neat and i might want to give that a rewatch. As for the one i have seen i don’t have any complaints. I do however prefer the way that Peter was bitten in TAS because it was a result of him poking around where he shouldn’t’ve been rather than him just happening to be standing in the right place for a spider to land on him.
Onto TH’s movies; the way Disney has treated Spidey in the MCU is why TH’s is my least favorite version of the character. I feel like too much of the story revolves around Iron Man; Iron Man made Peter’s suit and equipment, Iron Man introduces Peter to the MCU(via blackmail but thats another rant for another annoyingly long post), its Iron Man that “makes” Spidey in this universe rather than Spidey being self-made. In Homecoming(which remember i havent seen outside of clips so bear with me) most of the conflict is cause directly or indirectly by Tony’s refusal or inabilty to communicate with the teenager he’s meant to be mentoring
For one the entire incident with the ferry could have very easily been avoided had Tony bothered to communicate with Peter enough to tell him that the situation was being taken care of. On top of that at the moive’s climax Peter is shown trying to get in contact with Happy(from what ive picked up isnt he a chauffeur? like idk his deal i just know he’s someone Peter got pawned off onto after Civil War). Peter even goes as far as to somehow hack into Happy’s phone(i think thats what happened it was a weird tech thing that shouldve been a red flag that the call was important though) but instead of listening; Peter is ignored. If this was a different kind of movie Peter literally could have died and itd be the fault of Happy and Tony like..... A large portion of conflict comes from characters being incompetent and not communicating and thats just poor storytelling.
Before this turns too much into an anti mcu rant id also like to say that the way they did Civil War was really dumb considering that Peter defects to Cap’s side in the comics, but whatever.
Also i loathe the way they handled the identity reveal at the end of Far From Home. With MCU movies most people know to expect an end credits scene by now, but typically that scene is not important to understand what’s happening in the films; they just aren’t important. Putting an identity reveal here makes it seem significantly less important than it is. On top of that i dislike their use of J Jonah Jameson for this scene.
JJJ is a character who has been repeatedly shown to have a genuinely good heart. All of his anger comes from a place of love for his city(he even says this hemself in the ps4 game when May writes in to tell him that he needs help). He hates Spider-Man because SM reminds him of the masked man who killed his wife; JJJ has never been able to get past that( and Peter’s antagonism of him definitely doesnt help) However, JJJ has been shown to care for people; he has a son who he often brags about, and one comic shows that JJJ is paying Peter for “amateur” quality photos because he knows that Peter is having a hard time and “just need some help”. JJJ has even learned Peter’s identity before and kept his secret for him(seriously though i cant remember the name of the comic but its defiantly worth the read), and in the original trilogy when Goblin threatens JJJ he claims that he doesn’t know who sends in the photos of Spidey because he does it via email( this is a lie). The MCU will have a very difficult time convincing me that JJJ would ever out a teenager’s identity and put him in danger like that. It goes too far against his character.(this could be hypocritical of me to say considering how i just insisted that multiple versions of a character can exist but whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
This is accidentally turning into an MCU rant but id also like to say that i hate the lack of a TH!Spidey origin movie because it gives you no motivaion for Peter becoming SM or explanation of his powers; most people will know these things but if youre unfamiliar with the character its bound to be confusing(and im a sucker for origin movies)

One And The Same (Part 6)
Warnings: Mild fluff(?) and language, briefly.
Pairing: Peter Parker/Spider-Man x Reader
Note: Sorry it took me a little longer for this one. I wasn't happy with where it was going, so I scrapped most of it and started over. I still don't love it, but it's way better than it was. Let me know what you think!
Tumblr media
It just so happened to be Friday date night for Peter and Liz. Peter had left you on the rooftop for a different, but related reason. The past couple of weeks had left Peter confused. Things with Liz were fine; she was kind and sweet. She really liked him. Peter didn't have any complaints. Maybe he could even have been happy with her. But you. Things with you were incredible. It put his relationship with Liz to shame. If there was a spark between him and Liz, there were fireworks between the two of you. Well, between you and Spider-Man, anyway.
But he was Spider-Man, and you had confessed to him that you had had feelings for Peter. Whether or not that was still true, he had to try. If there was even a fraction of a chance, he had to. What had you told him when you urged him to ask Liz to homecoming? "You'll never know if you don't try." If you still felt for him, he wouldn't have to worry about you being in danger, anymore. You could be with Peter, and he with you, his identity would remain a secret, and everything would be okay, again. More than okay.
Peter's heart sank as he reached his destination. For any of that to happen, he had to break up with Liz. He should have done it ages ago. He shouldn't have dated her at all. He should have ended things when Spider-Man had kissed you. When he had kissed you. But he didn't. And now, it was even harder. There was nothing wrong with their relationship, no clear explanation for his leaving, but one. She didn't deserve this. She didn't deserve any of it.
He pulled a hoodie and joggers over his suit, stuffed his mask in his pocket, and walked up to the house. He took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. Adrian Toomes opened the door. "Hey, Pete. You're early."
Peter ran a hand through his hair. "Hello, sir. Uh, is Liz here? I mean, could I talk to her?" Of course she was there.
"You've got your whole date to talk. She's 'putting her face on,' or something."
Peter rocked back and forth on his feet, nervously. "It's...kind of important, sir." Peter looked down and noticed his mask beginning to fall out of his pocket. Hastily, he shoved it back in. Toomes noticed.
"What have you got there?"
"Dad, who's at the door?" Liz rounded the door. "Peter! You're early."
"Uh, hey, Liz." Toomes stared him down, suspicious. Peter looked away.
"...dad? Could you give us a minute?" She watched as her dad backed out of the doorway and closed it behind him. "Ugh, sorry about him. What's up? Couldn't wait for our date?" She smiled.
Peter squirmed. "I need to talk to you."
Her eyebrows knitted together, and concern could now be detected in her voice, "What's wrong, Peter?"
He found it difficult to make eye contact, but managed, all the same. "Liz, I'm sorry. I, we..." he sighed. "Liz, I think we should break up." The look on her face made him feel terrible, but he knew he was doing the right thing.
"I- Peter, I don't understand. I thought things were going fine."
"Oh, no! They are! It's just, well," he ran a hand through his hair, not sure how to proceed, "I have feelings... for someone... else." He suddenly became very interested in his shoelaces.
"It's Y/N, isn't it?"
Peter looked up, surprised. "How did you-"
"Oh, come on, Peter. Give me some credit." Her sadness had turned on a dime into anger. "I see you every time you look at her in the cafeteria. I see you check her name in your texts. I figured you were just worried about her, since you basically stopped talking, but now it all makes sense."
"Liz, I'm sor-"
"Whatever, Peter," she opened the door to Toomes, car keys in hand.
"Ready, kids?"
"No, dad. Actually, Peter was just leaving." Liz never took her eyes off of him.
"Goodbye, Peter." Liz turned and walked back into the house.
Her father watched her walk in, but by the time he looked back, Peter was gone.
Monday rolled around, again, and Peter resolved to... do something. He didn't really have a plan. He just had to make a move of some kind. He chickened out in Chemistry when you ignored him and sat with Michelle. This wasn't a new development, but it deterred him all the same. Michelle didn't exactly scare him, she was just... intimidating. He decided to wait until lunch.
He was grabbing his lunch from his locker when he heard a commotion around the corner.
"What the fuck?!"
"You bitch! You just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?"
Peter recognized both voices as he rushed around the corner. A crowd was gathering as Liz stood, glowering at you. You held a hand to your face, looking equal parts confused and infuriated.
"What on this habitable space rock are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about."
"Liz, she doesn't." Peter pushed through and stepped in between you, spreading his hands in surrender. "She didn't do anything. She doesn't even know."
"What don't I know?" You asked, less confusion, more fury. This whole encounter was off the wall.
Peter looked over his shoulder at you, "Liz and I broke up."
You couldn't help but feel your heart stir, hopefully.
"Oh, don't stop there, Peter. Tell her why." Liz crossed her arms.
He sighed, squeezing his eyes shut. "I...I have feelings for you, Y/N."
The feelings you'd tried so hard to forget, the ones you'd tried so hard to keep out, flooded back...just to crash against the walls you'd built. "No. Nuh-uh. You can't do this now." You started to walk away, but Peter grabbed your hand.
"Y/N, wai-"
"No, Peter! No. Maybe there was a time, but that's gone, now. I'm over you." The feelings lapping at your walls begged to differ, but he didnt need to know that.
"Y/N..." he looked so dejected.
You pulled your hand from his. "I'm seeing someone, Peter." Turning, you headed to the cafeteria.
The crowd dispersed, and it was just Liz and Peter. She was fuming, but she just scoffed at Peter and walked away.
"Mmh. Rough. Shoulda told her ages ago." Michelle walked by, out of nowhere, nose buried in a book.
Peter sighed. He was frustrated. He debated whether it had been worth it to try, but realized he hadnt really been given a choice. It sucked. Rejection hurt. He still had you as Spider-Man, but the rejection still hurt, all the same. Hearing you say you were seeing someone else also struck a chord, even if that someone was still him.
Maybe Spider-Man could convince you to give Peter a shot. He could break up with you. No, no. That would risk losing you entirely. It was selfish to keep you in perpetual danger, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. He leaned his head against the lockers and sighed again.
The rest of the day dragged on. Peter felt dejected. By the time he had gotten to Mr. Delmar's, after school, he realized he wasn't even hungry. As he finished his herowork for the evening, he ducked around an alley corner to change. Just as he was about to pull his mask off, a van sped by the alley. The van from the ATM robbery. This was his chance to get them off the street. He threw his backpack towards a dumpster and webbed it to the side. Then he climbed up the side of the building and threw himself off the edge. Swinging from building to building, he chased after the van. Just as he was getting close, his webbing snapped and he found himself in a free fall. Quickly, he shot a replacement up the building side, but hit something else. Whatever it was dragged him through the air with it, as it followed the van. It didn't seem to realize Peter was there, which gave him a moment to try to make out what it was. It had mechanical wings, and some kind of... propellers? He wasn't sure. Peter nearly let go out of shock, when the creature trained two bright green orbs on him. One wing curled in and snipped his web line. Luckily, Peter was close enough to the ground to stick a roll landing. He stood, slowly, and watched the van and creature round a corner. They were too far away for him to catch at this point, especially on an empty stomach. He wished he had gotten a sandwich at Mr. Delmar's, but now he had something bigger to worry about. Not only did these guys have high tech weapons, they had... something else.
You weren't sure what to do. Things with Spider-Man were great, but you couldn't shake the curiosity of what could be with Peter. For so long you'd pined for him. Now, just as you thought you were over him, he brings all these feelings rushing back. It had been a month or so. You missed him. But what if you dated him and things went really wrong? What if you lost him? Then you'd be without him or Spider-Man. That was selfish. You decided things should stay the same, for now. Spidey treated you right, and things with him were incredible. You were obviously Peter's second choice, anyway.
You had been harsh with him, that day, though. Rejection was hard enough, let alone in front of all those people. You checked on the tray of cup-pies in the kitchen, deciding they were cool enough. You felt you owed Peter an apology, and maybe now you could get back to being friends. It would take a while, but it was a start. You wrapped them up and headed to Peter's.
Peter tapped on your window, but there was no response. He resolved to wait a bit before heading home. As he waited, he wanted to come up with a plan for this winged vulture creature, but he couldn't stop his mind from wandering to you. He tapped, again. Then he decided to try the window. It was unlocked. He climbed in and decided to hang out... literally. Unbeknownst to him, a pair of green orbs watched from an adjacent rooftop.
You arrived back home after delivering the pies. Peter hadn't been home, so you left them with May and asked her, with a laugh, to save some for Peter.
You said hello and goodnight to your parents before heading to your room. You closed the door behind you and were about to undress, when Spider-Man dropped from the ceiling, upside-down. Your eyes went wide but he kissed you before you could scream. He pulled away.
"Your window was unlocked. That's not safe for the girlfriend of Spider-Man."
Breathless and heart beating a mile a minute, you managed, "girlfriend?" All thoughts of Peter flew out the window.
Suddenly he seemed nervous. "I mean, we don't have to have labels, I just thought, with us, the way we are, what you said last time-"
You cut off his rambling. "You left so suddenly last time, and I didn't see you all weekend. I wasn't sure where we stood. But now I'd say we're on the same page."
"Really?" His tone hedged on excitement as he dropped down to his feet. "You had me worried for a second." He pulled you close. "Will you, though?"
You wrapped your arms around his neck. "Will I what?"
"Be my girlfriend?" His fingers drew figure eights on the small of you back.
"Spidey, I think that's what we just established." You let out a small laugh. "Of course."
"Oh, good," he sighed, spinning you around, face buried lovingly in your neck. "Because I like you, Y/N. I really, really like you."
You felt your heart melt, as you breathed in his familiar scent. Peter couldn't give you this. How could a man this perfect exist? More curious, how could a man this perfect be yours?
