Hi Riko! Thank you for your request! Sorry it took a while. I hope you like your matchups!
In Genshin Impact, I match you with...
Tumblr media
Yae loves your personality! She thinks you're a nice change of pace from the people she usually deals with at the shrine.
Even your slight airheadedness is an endearing quality to her. She loves everything about you, even those things you might not like about yourself.
You like foxes? Well does Yae have good news for you! She'll change into her fox form and spend lazy afternoons cuddled up with you. They're some of her favourite moments.
Very loyal. She may not seem like it at first since she's a very relaxed, fun loving, and playful person but when it comes to people she cares about, she'll stand by them and support them with every fibre of her being.
Yae would enjoy watching you perform. She seems like the kind of person who would be into musicals and plays so whenever you need someone to practise lines with, she's first in line.
In Honkai Star Rail, I match you with...
Tumblr media
You and March are very similar in personality and that means you understand each other in ways others can't.
She loves that you're so expressive. She's around Dan Heng so much that knowing what someone's feeling without having to read into everything is a nice change.
Food dates! March always researches the best places to eat on any new planet and makes sure to take you there at the first opportunity.
Like Yae, March would love watching you perform and help you rehearse. She thinks your drama skills are really cool and is eager to do whatever she can to help out.
I see March as someone who would like to learn skateboarding. It might take her a while to get the hang of it but she likes being able to spend time with you and learn a new skill at the same time.

LOVESTORY - Chp 7.5
intermission
warnings: swearing
My name is Rose Walter and I’m just your average 24 year old girl, trying to get by in life. I grew up in the big city and worked the register at a local convenience store. Nothing special. Well, I was cursed at birth but besides that, nothing special.
And today has officially been the worst day of my life.
It all started when I was born. No wait, a little after that. After the whole birth cursing thing. That part’s not important. Anyway, when I was a child, I was just sitting in front of the T.V, watching whatever my dad had put on to get me to shut up when it happened. An ad played. An ad for a company I’d never heard of before. Sunshine Manufacturing. I still remember how engrossed I’d been at the time. The colours. The exaggerated expressions of the actors. The music. The mascot. And for some reason, the ad stuck with me. It would always be in the back of my mind, a memory waiting to resurface.
One night, when I couldn’t sleep, the ad came to mind again and I finally caved in. After several hours of desperately searching for it on the Internet, I found and re watched it. It really was as weird as I’d remembered and though the company had rebranded itself quite a while back, it still really interested me.
So, I started doing research on Sunshine Manufacturing, learning more about it each day. And I liked what I saw. I respected their environmental policies and loved what they stood for. Their products were innovative and from what I’ve read, they treated their employees really well. I also had a huge crush on their velki CEO, Isabelle Wilfred and given the opportunity, I would climb her like a tree, but that was more of a recent thing.
So, after getting a diploma and a stable job, I applied for a position there. And about a week ago, they finally wrote back. They said they wanted to see me for a job interview, which had been amazing news! Both amazing and terrifying, actually. I didn’t want to mess up what could be my only chance to join them so I blew a bunch of cash on a new suit and some makeup. I looked up interview questions and how to make a good impression on your interviewer. What was considered good etiquette and how to make yourself memorable. I practiced what I would say in my free time. Studied my expressions in the mirror as I did. And finally, the faithful day arrived.
It was raining.
That was the first sign something terrible was going to happen. I’d barely managed to get to a sheltered spot before the downpour started and my socks were soaking wet. Ugh. Now, I stood in front of the massive office building, clutching my briefcase tightly to my person and trying to psyche myself up while peering though the windows. I made sure not to take too long. I didn’t want to make a bad first impression by being late. Also, the receptionist was starting to stare. I checked myself in the reflection. Suit? Check. Hairstyle I unfortunately had to pay $50 for? Check. Gloves to prevent people from coming into contact with my hands and falling in love with me? Check.
I entered the building and took a look around while walking up to the reception desk. Everything was clean, white and quiet and I already felt out of place. Unprofessional compared to these pristine walls. A cheaper suit was all I could afford and the pointless bronze peacock statue in the center of the room was judging me for it.
Nevertheless, I pushed onward. I reached the desk, where a velki was tapping away silently at a computer, and pressed the button on the front. A beat later, he was leaning over the table to get a look at me.
“Can I help you?” he asked.
“I, uh, have a job interview today,” I said, having to look up to meet his gaze.
“Your name?”
“Uh…Rose Water-uh, Walter. Rose Walter.”
The receptionist's head disappeared and he typed away at his keyboard. Then his head came back into view. “You’re the 10:30 appointment?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Uh…yeah?”
He let out a low whistle. “Well, good luck. You’re gonna need it.”
That was the second omen. I decided not to dwell on it.
“Head down the hall to your left and take the elevator. It’s the 60th floor.”
“Which room is it?”
“Trust me. You’ll know.”
I started making my way to the elevator when the receptionist spoke up. “Your other left.”
I ducked my head. “Ah, right. Thank you.”
As I rode the empty human elevator up, I tried to give myself a pep talk to calm my nerves. “Okay,” I said to no one. “Alright. I can do this. I can do this. I’ve trained my whole life for this moment. My credentials are good. I know everything about this place. I’m passionate. A hard worker. An asset to this company. I deserve this job. In a few minutes, I will wow the interviewer with my words and begin the first day of rest of my life. I can do this. I can do anything I put my mind to. I’m ROSE WALTER.”
I pumped both fists into the air as I yelled this and that’s when elevator doors slid open with a pleasant ding.
I froze mid shout and the poor human woman on the other side of the doors stared at me. Elevator music played and neither of us made a move.
She didn’t get on.
Slowly, the elevator doors slid shut again.
I…put my fists down and closed my mouth. …hopefully, I’d never see her again if I got this job. I shook it off and tried to pass the time by reviewing some interview questions. It gave me some comfort, at least. I was more than prepared for this. It would be a piece of cake.
Finally, I reached 60th floor. That receptionist hadn’t been kidding. The elevator opened to a very short hallway with a set of intricately carved double doors at the end. The third and final warning.
I straightened out my suit and knocked on the doors.
“Enter,” said a feminine voice on the other side.
I pushed through the smaller, but just as intricately carved human doors and found myself in a large room. Much larger than I had expected a room that held interviews would be. It was much more furnished too. There was a couch with a coffee table off to the left, a complicated chandelier hanging from the ceiling, a table with velki refreshments to the right and several other small tables carrying various cat statues and vases filled with flowers. The colours, all dark browns and deep blues, gave the room a muted but professional look. Sunlight flooded in through the floor to ceiling windows behind a large oak desk.
And at that desk sat famous CEO Isabelle Wilfred.
I pinched myself. It hurt.
So that’s what the receptionist had meant.
Isabelle Wilfred. This was her office. Why had I been directed to her office? What did she want from me? Was she going to interview me? Had I committed some kind of war crime so heinous only famous and powerful CEO, Isabelle Wilfred, could fix it? What was I supposed to do?
Isabelle Wilfred cleared her throat and I realized I had been staring. I dropped my gaze. Then picked it back up because if this still was a job interview then that was rude. I let out a slow breath before making my way over to her table, each step bringing me closer to her. I quickly climbed up the stairs to the top of the desk.
Isabelle Wilfred’s desk. Because she was going to interview me.
I pinched myself again on the way up. Still hurt.
Once I reached the top, I walked to stand in front of Isabelle Wilfred and forced my eyes to meet her beautiful light green ones. The desk was quite wide and there was plenty of room between me and her but, in my opinion, it wasn’t enough. She was even more beautiful up close and it was all I could do not to turn into a blubbering mess. She stared back and it took me a second to remember why I was here.
“G-good morning, Ms. Wilfred.”
“Good morning, Ms. Walter. Please sit.” She nodded to the chair behind me and I sat.
“So, you’re probably wondering why I called you here.”
“Y-yes, ma’am.” My heart was pounding.
“Normally, interviews are conducted by the Resources department but, well, your application…really stood out to me. Pardon my boldness but I just had to see you for myself.”
Famous CEO Isabelle Wilfred thought I was interesting.
…still hurt.
“T-thank you, ma’am.”
“So if you’re ready, we’ll begin.”
I nodded. “I’m ready.”
Isabelle Wilfred folded her hands. “Tell me a little about yourself.”
The interview went on for quite some time. At first I was nervous because I was being interviewed by a very powerful CEO who was also the woman of my dreams but after a while, we got into a comfortable rhythm. I could tell she was impressed by my answers because she smiled and nodded along thoughtfully as I spoke, which was great for my confidence and horrible for just about everything else. I was glad I was sitting or I would have fallen over.
Finally, the interview drew to a close.
Isabelle Wilfred nodded to herself before turning to me.
“That will be all, Ms. Walter. Thank you.”
She stood and brought her index finger towards me. I stood and extended my arm as well. We shook and I thought things were starting to look up for me when Isabelle Wilfred froze. Her eyes widened and her pupils focused on a spot in the middle distance.
I knew that look.
Horrified, I snatched my hand away and inspected the glove.
It had a small, barely noticeable hole in it.
I looked back up. Isabelle Wilfred blinked slowly, her gaze starting to focus on me once more. I stared back. She blinked again. Shook her head slightly, as if coming out of a trance. I swallowed.
“Oh, sorry,” she said, clutching her head in confusion. “I…must have spaced out for a second there.” She shook her head again. Blinked. Her eyes cleared. “I…I’ll have some people email you in a few days with your results. You may go.”
I blinked up at her. “O-okay. Thank you, ma’am.”
I made my way down the staircase, both confused and grateful nothing had happened. Maybe my curse had broken at some point. Or maybe since the actual area of contact was so small, especially to her, it only had a hold of her for a second. Or maybe we didn’t even touch. That was probably it. I sighed in relief.
And then a huge face filled my vision, just outside the rails of the staircase. Isabelle Wilfred stared at me, her head at an odd angle from leaning out of her chair. Her eyes were wild and her smile was now much more…manic than it had been earlier. I knew that look too. She was under the curse.
I had accidentally made famous CEO, Isabelle Wilfred, fall in love with me.
I pressed myself into the opposite railing, wide eyed, and felt my cheeks start to warm at the proximity.
“Actually,” Isabelle Wilfred started, as if this was all completely normal. “I-.” Then she cut herself off with a snort that quickly devolved into a fit of laughter.
-
“Alright, cut. CUT! Really Abby. Again? Really? I’m trying to make a show here.”
Isabelle Wilfred, also known as Abby White in the real world, sat up and leaned back in the prop chair, still laughing. “I’m sorry!” she exclaimed to the tired director, Fable Peterson, through her laughter.
Rose Walter, played by up and coming actress Mia Watson, also laughed. She slipped past a cameraman and climbed back up the staircase.
“I think,” Fable said, “we need a break.” They turned to address everyone in the room. “Everybody take 5! We’ll try again at 2pm.”
Everyone let out a collective groan before setting their equipment on standby and slowly trudging out of the room. Mia reached the top of the desk again and jumped out of the way of the human camera crew on their way down. She reached Abby and sat down next to her.
“Hey,” Fable said, as they walked over the prop table. They took care to step around the tired human camera crew. “Explain something to me, Abby. Why is it always that scene? We’ve been through it 3 times now! 3 times.”
Abby chuckled and shook her head. “Look, it’s not my fault Mia’s scared expression is so amazing. Show them, Mia.”
Mia pulled off another shocked expression, adding some exaggerated hand gestures for good measure and causing Abby to erupt into laughter again. Fable just shook their head but had to fight off a smile of their own.
“I wanna finish this scene by today, dammit.” They rubbed their eyes. “Ugh. I’m going to go drink something with caffeine in it and rethink my life choices.”
“You’re the best director in the world?” Abby tried.
Fable waved her off as they walked away. “Yeah, yeah. I forgive you. See you girls in 2 hours.” They left the room, leaving Abby and Mia alone.
Abby rested the side of her face on the table and turned to look at Mia. “Hi.”
Mia, for all intents and purposes, had to fight to meet Abby’s gaze in real life too.
They’d met a few weeks ago, after the final casting had been decided, and Abby had been nothing but nice to her since they’d met. Sharing a lot of scenes in the show, they’d spent a lot of time together, whether it be rehearsing or just hanging out. And Mia had started to accumulate feelings for Abby, though she still wasn’t ready to admit this to herself. She could, however, admit to herself that this new proximity wasn’t helping. “…hi.”
“So, how’s it going so far? Everything you wanted it to be?”
“…I think things are going well. I…I still can’t believe I actually got the part of the main character. It’s like a dream come true.”
“Oh, don’t sell yourself short, Mia. You’re an amazing actor. You deserve to be here.”
Mia focused on the bridge of Abby’s nose to avoid looking into her eyes, which were still an absolutely beautiful pale green. “…thanks. That means a lot coming from such a great actor.”
“What, me?” Abby blew raspberries and they both laughed. They watched each other for just a moment too long before Abby broke eye contact and sat back up. She stretched. “Well, I’m starving.” She looked down at Mia. Looked around the empty room. Turned to Mia again. Coughed. “Hey, you…wanna go grab some grub together?”
Mia smiled.
-
7 years later, at around 2 in the morning and almost halfway across the planet, Syren Jones stared wide eyed at her laptop as she read the news article over once again. She smiled to herself. Then, she scrambled for her phone and texted her friend of over 9 months, Thaddeus Kayne. She asked if he was awake and he responded by informing her of the time but stayed awake anyway as Syren excitingly told him about how just yesterday, the people who had played the main characters in one of her favourite shows had gotten married.
Her screen displayed a picture of the aforementioned couple posing for the camera. Two woman, a velki and a human. The velki, Abby White, wore a sleek grey suit with a dark blue boutonnière and was holding her spouse to her face, smiling. The human, Mia Watson, wore an elegant flowing white gown and was kissing White on the check, also smiling.
They were happy.

Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide, Pg. 42-44
So, you’ve worked hard, had the wrap party, you’re close to finishing your film - now it’s time to start sending in those festival applications and travel the world showing your masterpiece.  Having finished a film you certainly have the right to be on a creative high, but don’t let that sway you from reality; it’s time to get serious.
Aimlessly filling out applications and writing checks is generally how most filmmakers go about submitting to festivals.  That method usually results in paying a cool $40 bucks for each rejection letter -  a total waste of cash.  You can do better than that.  You need a submission plan.
First, you need to get to know the festivals. (Which is why we included the handy festival appendix in the back of this book.). Choose a group of festivals that best fit the profile of your film.  There are many factors to consider when choosing festivals.
10 Important Factors to Consider When Applying to Festivals
1. Prestige.
2. Distributors. • Make sure to ask the festival staff which acquisitions executives will be attending.
3. Reviews and press coverage. • Your chances of being covered and/or reviewed by these outlets increases when they actually attend the festival.  But it’s also your job to be sure that they see a screening of your film.  Ask the festival office to provide a list of the journalists attending the festival.  If the festival has only attracted local press, it may not be worth your time.  Unless, of course, that local press is in one of the Top Ten markets in the US.
4. Prizes and awards. • Inquire about prizes (money or equipment, etc.), audience awards, judges awards, and so on.  Any type of award that your film receives only serves to increase its overall value.  While it’s an honor to receive a jury award, audience awards hold a lot of clout since they are the true gauge for whether moviegoers respond to your film.
5. Location.
6. Perks. • Be sure to inquire about paid expenses and other perks.  Travel costs can add up fast, so research what expenses festivals will cover.  Almost all festivals cover lodging, fewer cover airfare, and a small few will give filmmakers per diem.  Get the facts before you submit.
7. Application fee. • Be sure to ask if a festival is willing to waive the fee.  It’s always worth a try, and some of them will actually be willing to do it.  If your film has no chance of being accepted anyway, why bother writing the check and submitting the film?  Do your homework.  Don’t submit your talky twentysomething, angst-ridden, Kevin Smith-like, Clerks wannabe to the Asian Children’s festival.
8. Research and Recommendations. • I’ve included lists of festivals that excel in specific categories, but you should do you own research and contact filmmakers who have either attended or had their films shown at that particular festival, if at all possible.
9. Contacts. • It’s vitally important to make useful contacts for investors in the future films, distributors, acquisitions executives, agents, lawyers, and especially other filmmakers who can help you along in your career.  Or simply make friends in the industry.  You never know how these contacts can pay off later.  For many, a festival can be an opportunity to meet their heroes. ... Nothing is more fun than slugging down beers and talking film until all hours of the night with a longtime film hero. ... And, if you decide to go the route in your submission plan.  You’ll need to find others in the industry willing to champion your film.
10. Fun. • Yes, fun.  If it’s going to be miserable, why bother?  Working the festival circuit, plugging a film day in and day out, can be grueling after the fiftieth post-screening question and answer session.  Select festivals in places you’d like to visit - that way, if the festival is a bore, at least you’ll have the opportunity to explore a new city.
---
Basically, you need to think of your film as an investment.  The value of your film (and yourself as a filmmaker) increases as you receive good press, awards of any kind, and acceptance into prestige film festivals.

Anon wrote: Hi, I got to know about mbti during lockdown. I have done extensive research since then. I am trying to improve myself. I am Te dom and hence my feeling function development was very poor. I wasn't self aware at all. Due to this, I have lost many relationships, lost many opportunities and put myself in unnecessary emotional turmoil in some situations.
Now, after reading about functions, I could get some explanations to my behaviour earlier like how and where I was wrong. I could guess type for few people who were close to me and could get some insights like how some relationships came to an end due to type mismatch and no understanding towards other person.
Though I have understood now, all these failures from past still haunts me. I have really lost few relationship where I could now see I have done some injustice to other person, may be my behaviour triggered some resentment towards me and then he did some unjustice to me and ultimately it ended and we are in no contact anymore. Our paths are separated. I don't have any way to tell him that I have understood how it went wrong and my mistake in it.
I feel like I'm horrible person and feel very much at loss. Logically, I know that if I'm working on self improvement, I will be better person ultimately and there would be good things coming my way in relationship, career etc but I am unable to move over past. Would like to hear from you what should I do in this situation and invest my energy in some fruitful things rather than rumination. Thanks!

You seem to be describing Fi grip. If one is a normal, responsible adult, it is only natural to regret serious errors in judgment or feel guilty for behavior that has caused pain and suffering. Having a conscience and listening to it is a good sign of moral development.
However, there is such thing as irrational or excessive guilt, shame, regret, or remorse. Yours is bordering on irrational. Humans aren't born knowing everything there is to know. You can't go through life without making mistakes. You can't live life without experiencing pain and suffering. These are the facts.
One's sense of responsibility should be reasonable and proportionate to the circumstances. You should be judging your behavior based on what you knew at the time. If we were all to judge ourselves based on the benefits of 20/20 hindsight, we would all be living in a private hell of self-flagellation.
"Blame" is about moral condemnation and eliciting remorse. You are essentially labeling yourself morally bankrupt because you didn't know any better at the time. That's not how moral judgment should work. Blame should only be assigned when you know full well that something is wrong but you make a conscious choice to do it anyway. When that happens, then you certainly have something to atone for, if you hope to redeem your moral character. Was that the case in your past, though?
It is a sign of low ego development when blame is the only method you possess for handling mistakes. Whether you blame yourself and/or others, it is always counter-productive for personal growth. Wanting to improve yourself just because you want to assuage your self-loathing or guilt will not lead you in the right direction. Type development must begin from a healthy psychological place:
1) You must appreciate your humanity. Accept that you have flaws, weaknesses, and limitations. Proper Te development would encourage you to accept the facts and move forward from there. Your humanity isn't a bug but a feature. It is the vehicle of personal growth. Without your humanity, you wouldn't make mistakes, and without your humanity, you wouldn't learn from them. Accept that life is about learning and growing, then you will have the right perspective on mistakes. Proper Si development would tell you that everything you experience is essential for making you who you are, both the good and the bad.
2) You must have empathy and love in your heart. Proper Fi development would encourage you to show compassion for yourself, for the mistakes that you unwittingly make out of ignorance. You must be fair-minded when evaluating your moral culpability so that your guilt is reasonable and doesn't preclude you from forgiving yourself. Most importantly, you must live a life of integrity in terms of being fully honest with yourself about what motivates your behavior. To truly make amends or atone for mistakes, you can't be motivated merely by ego dramas and insecurities, rather, you should be motivated by a genuine hope to serve everyone's well-being.

It’s a Good Day to Have a Bad Date
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Reader
Word count: 2,383
Warnings: Slight mentions of an OC with criminal priors, violent tendencies, and a juvenile record. A teeny-tiny bit of angst.
Summary: The reader meets Jay as she's trying to find out stuff about the guy she's about to go out with and ends up switching dates.
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the One Chicago shows, or its characters, also not associated with it in any way or know anyone involved with it.
A/N: Just to make one thing clear: I did some research on Illinois's laws  (not sure I got it right tho) and, apparently, this fic is very inaccurate. But I really wanted to pursue the idea, so just humor me, please 🙏🏻. Anyways, I had a lot of fun while writing this and thought about making a part two... But I'm not sure. Tell me what you think! 💗

Tumblr media
You inhaled deeply one more time before you walked into the police district. There wasn’t even a real reason for you to be so nervous about it. You weren’t a victim and you weren’t a criminal. So, what’s the worst that could happen?
The worst that could happen was, of course, you getting a bunch of cops mad at you because you went to waste their time with some pathetic whining. It was decided, you were gonna turn back around right now, while you still had time, and just go home.
On second thought, though, it was a matter of public safety. Your safety. Which was just as valid because you were just as much of a U.S. citizen as anyone else. So you went in.
Shit. The place was almost empty, which meant everyone would notice if you left. And they’d ask questions, so you figured you’d, at least, get ahead of them, as you walked shyly towards the front desk. There, you were met by an older woman who looked bored, and still, terrifying.
“Can I help you with something?” She asked you, while cautiously checking you out. Oh my God, she thought you could be a victim! You were such an idiot.
“Um, it’s, um, it’s actually nothing, really. I shouldn’t even have come here in the first place.” You told her while smiling a little. What you didn’t know was that what you said had only raised more flags in the sergeant’s mind, even catching the attention of a tall man writing some things down on a paper at the corner of the counter. The young detective stayed back because he knew that Platt would know how to manage the situation, but continued listening to every word of the conversation.
The sergeant, then, took her glasses off, setting them on the counter. “Listen, miss, my name is Trudy Platt and the reason why I became a cop was that I wanted to help people, in every way that I possibly could. So, if you need my help with anything, just tell me what it is. And, I promise, I’ll do everything in my power to give it to you.” She assured you and, as much as you felt this huge sympathy for the woman, you also felt even worse about making her waste her time. So you tried to fix things.
“Oh, my God! I’m so, so, so sorry! I’m not a victim in any way, thank God. I said that I shouldn’t have come here because I’m not even sure if what I wanted to ask is legal…” You told her with a nervous laugh. Hearing that, the Sergeant’s eyes sparked with curiosity.
“Well, then I probably won’t be able to help you.” She told you, stressing the ‘probably’ and making the man at the end of the counter shamelessly turn his face in your direction in order to better hear your conversation. “But… Since you’re already here, and it’s been such a slow day for the District, maybe you should just ask me whatever you want to and I’ll be the judge of whether that’s legal or not. After all, unless you’re some sort of lawyer, I should know more about the law than the average civilian.” The Sergeant skilfully baited you.
“Um, no, I’m not a lawyer.” You confirmed with a small laugh while tugging some of your hair behind your ear. “Actually, since I’ve just recently moved here to Chicago ⎼ to Illinois, really ⎼, I’m probably a lot below your average civilian.” You stated with a giggle. At that, the guy that had lost his discretion about eavesdropping started chuckling a little himself, to which the older woman responded with a look you’d absolutely hate having directed to you.
“So, Chuckles, you have nothing better to do than to stay here listening to other people’s conversations?”
“First of all, it’s detective,” he started in a mocked smug tone, “and, second: no, uh, I actually don’t. I came to fill this paperwork down here exactly because we were about to kill each other upstairs, just to get out of the boredom.” He added, raising some paper files he had in-hand. “Besides, you know how much I, too, love to help people.” He said while shooting you a charming smile. Okay, that guy was pretty handsome. “Jay Halstead, nice to meet you.” The detective informed you, holding out his hand.
“Right, um, nice to meet you too, sir.” You replied, shaking his hand. “I didn’t even say my name, what a clums!” You joked while patting yourself on the forehead. “I’m (y/n) (y/l/n).”
“Okay, just, please, lose the ‘sir’ with that one, otherwise, he’ll never let it go.” Trudy chipped back in the conversation.
“So, what was it that you wanted to ask the sarge? I can assure you that we’ll let you know if it’s illegal. After all, two judges are better than one.” He suggested, all smiles.
“Since when?” The sergeant practically barked at the younger man, just to add: “You know what? You wanna be here at my front desk, Halstead? Then be here, but be quiet and let the lady talk.” She bluntly ordered him, who decided to do as he was told.
“Alright, um, it’s just that this guy who I don’t really know anything about asked me out and I said yes, even though I got a bad vibe from him?” They just stared at you with their jaws dropped, so you added: “Pathetic, I know. But I didn’t really wanna judge him without any proof, or anything like that, so I figured that, maybe, I could try and check if he has any criminal priors or something.” You finished with a tiny embarrassed smile.
“And why on Earth would you think that we could give you this type of information?” The sergeant asked you, her expression being one of pure shock.
“I, uh…” You didn’t really want to embarrass yourself even more but felt the urge to explain anyways. “It’s just that I’m a small-town girl, okay? And, over there, everybody knew my family, so, whenever I wanted to go out with someone, my dad would just ask his buddies at the Sheriff’s office to look the guy over. And he always told me that that was really important, so, when I moved to the state’s capital, I just wouldn’t go out with anyone unless a close friend vouched for him. Because I was terrified of what I’d see and hear on the news. But here… I don’t really know anyone yet.” You blurted it all out, to two strangers! To two cops who probably had something, or somethings, better to do than to listen to your whining. “Anyhow, I’m really sorry that I wasted your time, guys. Won’t happen again.” At that, they exchanged a look, and the sergeant said:
“You know what? You’re right, kid. The world is a dangerous place. And, unfortunately, it is even more dangerous for us women. So I’m gonna look the guy up. But I’m not gonna tell you exactly what it says if something comes up.” She told you, much for your surprise, and, then, turned to the detective, saying: “If you say a single word about this to anyone, and I mean anyone, Chuckles, I swear to God that I’ll cut your tongue out myself.”
“Geez, sarge. How can you swear such an ugly thing like that to God?” He asked her, in a mockery tone, while making a hilarious expression.
“Ha! Keep that up and your tongue won’t be the only thing I’m gonna cut.” She threatened him again and you couldn’t help but burst into laughter when he made a shocked expression and put his hands protectively over his crotch.
“For your information, I wanna help the girl just as much as you, so I wouldn’t say anything. You didn’t have to threaten me.” He tried to recover, as you handed her a small piece of paper with your possible date’s name.
“Oh, I know. But I wasn’t about to miss out on the opportunity.” She shot back at him while typing the name on the District’s computer. “Okay, here it is... Wow."
"What? What is it?" You asked her, as you watched the detective perk himself over the counter to look at the screen.
"Jesus. This guy's got himself quite a rap sheet." He commented, making you shiver, thinking of what could happen to you, if you went on with the date.
"What exactly do you mean by that, detective?" You asked the man who probably noticed your discomfort, because he spoke again, in a tranquilizing tone:
"No, relax. It's nothing too bad, like violent or anything. But there's some pretty nasty stuff here." He told you, not really making you relax.
"There's something here, though." That caught the detective's eye again. "His juvenile record is sealed, the only thing I can see without a warrant is an observation from his caseworker. She says something about him having violent tendencies." She told you with a sigh, taking her glasses off again. "Look, I know that I can't tell what to do and what to not do, (y/n), but, as a suggestion? Stay the hell away from this piece of work. You seem like a nice enough girl, I'd hate to see you come in here as a victim someday."
“Oh, God, no! I heard you loud and clear, sergeant! Don’t worry about it, I’m canceling that date ASAP!” You exclaimed, agreeing with her.
“That’s great!” The detective spoke this time, sounding a little too happy about the fact that you were about to cancel a date with a man who had criminal priors and violent tendencies. So both you and the other woman stared at him. “Err, I mean because you’re not gonna go out with him.” You just giggled a little at the way he was digging an even deeper hole for himself. “Because he’s a bad guy.” He added, once again getting a glare from Trudy. “You know what I mean.” He finished, defeated, not looking in your eyes.
“Well, uh,” you started, trying to keep yourself from laughing too hard, “anyways, I can only thank you both. You guys got me out of something that could be really unpleasant, to say the least.” You told them, a bit more serious this time.
“Nah, don’t worry about it. Just glad we could help.” Detective Halstead said, smiling kindly at you.
“Yeah. This time, I actually agree with you, Halstead.” The sergeant half-joked.
“Aw, that’s very kind, but, really, thank you!” You restated your gratitude, then asking: “I should probably get going now, right? Stop wasting your time?”
“It’s not like we were doing much before you got here-” Trudy began saying, but was interrupted by the detective, who quickly told you:
“Yeah, you should go. You know, cause a police District…” You knew he was right, but those two seemed like really nice people, especially after having helped you dodge a bullet, so to speak, and you’d hoped that you were finally making some friends in the Windy-City. “Anyways, um, lemme walk you out.” He offered you while motioning to the door. At that, you and the sergeant shared a look that told you she also found it weird that the detective would wanna walk with you through such a minimal distance.
“Uh, um, o- okay.” As you and Halstead walked towards the exit, you couldn’t help but notice what nice features he had. Like, your mind just kept going back to what a good-looking man he was.
“So…” He trailed off.
“So…” You answered, not really sure about what to say.
“You know, um, it’s gotta be a hell of a bummer for you. Being here in Chicago without knowing many people. This city… It’s all about finding your community.” He told you in a sympathetic tone.
“Hum…” You breathed out as you thought about it for a moment. “Yeah, well, I guess that I can only hope I’ll have better luck at making acquaintances the next time I go out to explore it.”
“Right.” The detective agreed. “Uh, listen, I know that this may sound a little too forward, but, maybe, I could show you some of my favorite places, someday? I mean, only if you’re interested! Because I don’t want you to feel like-”
“Actually, I’d very much like that! If it isn’t going to be any trouble for you…” You cut him off excitedly.
“No! No trouble at all!” He quickly assured you. “Um, thi- this is my card.” He said, lifting up a small business card for you to see. “I’m gonna write my personal number on the back of it. Call, or text me when you have some time to go out. Or if you just want someone to talk…” The handsome man added with a smile. God, what a smile.
“Okay, um, thanks, dete-”
“No, please! Call me Jay.”
“Alright,” you acknowledged, a little nervous this time, “then, thank you, Jay. Just, be advised, I can be very talkative sometimes, which means you might regret giving me this.” You warned him with a sly smile while waving the card in front of his face.
“Huh.” Jay pretended to consider it for a moment. “Is it too weird if I say I have a feeling that I won’t regret it?” He then asked you with a cute shy smile.
“Well, it sure isn’t weirder than me saying that I really hope you don’t regret it.” You confessed to him with a wink.
“Hey, are you two gonna take that flirting elsewhere on your own, or do you need me to get you a room?” You heard Sergeant Platt call out, blushing immediately.
“I’m so sorry about that!” Jay told you, looking a little flushed himself. “You should probably go now.” He added with an apologetic smile.
“Yeah, I think you’re right..” You agreed, but, as you were turning around to leave, he grabbed your wrist lightly, saying:
“Just… Don’t forget to call.” Hearing that, you snickered a little.
“I have a feeling that I won’t.” You told him, almost repeating his previous words, which got some chuckles out of him.
Now you understood the nickname.

The AAI Cast Takes On Twitter
Hello! For the release of ace attorney investigations 2 ten years ago, on the official AA twitter account, Capcom posted a bunch of tweets that were made to sound like they came from the characters themselves. You can still find them if you dig far enough, but it’s a bit of a pain to find and especially a pain to understand in English, so I decided to compile them all here and attempt to translate them. (They have also been “localized” in true ace attorney fashion.)
First, a disclaimer: I am absolutely NOT a translator and my understanding of Japanese is abysmal. I put the original tweets through google translate and then went through trying to make them legible, including looking up words and phrases when they didn’t make any sense. As a result, I can’t guarantee that this is completely accurate, and I definitely messed with phrasing a bit to get things to flow better or sound more in character. Hopefully the general gist of things should make sense! I’ll put the original Japanese text below the English one, and if you actually know Japanese and would like to properly translate it, please do so! I just wanted to get this out here as fast as possible.
If you want to view the original tweets, I’ve filtered them (mostly!) here in reverse-chronological order. There are tweets from the game staff at the end that I did not “translate”.
With that said, here are the tweets. (It is long, so most of it is under the cut.) The breaks are things I added that I believe were breaks in time on the actual account, and represent new scenes.
-----
<Edgeworth>: I was told to “tweet” what I usually think about to commemorate the release of “Ace Attorney Investigations 2”... What should I do?
<Kay>: Come on, Mr. Edgeworth! First, you need to introduce yourself!
<Edgeworth>: Oh. Sorry for the late introduction. My name is Miles Edgeworth, a prosecutor at the District Attorney's Office. Kay informed me that this is “Tweeter”.
<Kay>: No! It’s pronounced "Twitter"!
<Edgeworth>: Is it "Tweeter"? I'm not very good at this kind of thing ...
<Kay>: Okay, moving on. Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is about to be released, and Mr. Edgeworth has a lot to say, right?
<Edgeworth>: Mm. Certainly, there are few opportunities like this, so this should be a valuable experience.
<Kay>: Then this Great Thief, Kay Faraday, will teach Mr. Edgeworth the fun of tweeting!
<Edgeworth>: I’m not very interested in that… but alright. More importantly, Kay, do you want to start working soon?
<Kay>: Yes! Then, we can play later!
<Edgeworth>: (Well, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to tweet.)
<Kay>: Mr. Edgeworth ... Your inner voice is in the tweet! Isn't that neat?
<Edgeworth>: Ah! Tweeter… I shouldn’t underestimate it.
-----
<Edgeworth>: It's already 12 o'clock ... I wanted to take a break for lunch, but it seems that I won’t get the chance. The detective just reported a new case. I'm heading to the scene right now.
<Edgeworth>: Detective Gumshoe seems to have been in a hurry. He said he “lost something important”... It’s probably not something to worry about. I should concentrate on the investigation first. It takes a careful investigation to find out the truth hidden in the scene. There are many things that cannot be understood from desk work alone.
<Edgeworth>: I've arrived at the scene. Mm? It seems that some pencils have fallen near the victim.
<Edgeworth>: Search for the connection between information. That is the pursuit of "Logic". Assembling "Logic" is the key to the investigation even in Ace Attorney Investigations 2. “Something lost by Detective Gumshoe” and the “pencil left on the scene” ... There is one answer that can be derived from the two pieces of information.
<Edgeworth>: Detective Gumshoe! It seems that we found your lost pencil. ‥‥ Don’t leave extra evidence on the scene!
<Edgeworth>: Hmm ... Finally, the truth of the scene has come into view. This case will likely be resolved soon.
-----
<Kay>: Good evening! I came to play as promised!
<Gumshoe>: Welcome, Kay!
<Kay>: Huh? Gummy, are you also on Twitter?
<Gumshoe>: It’s popular among my detective friends. As long as my number of followers keeps increasing, I’m happy!
<Edgeworth>: What is a "follower"?
<Gumshoe>: Well, people who read your tweets. To put it simply, it’s like a friend group.
<Kay>: It seems that there are many people who are watching this tweet! Ehehe. That makes me kind of happy!
<Edgeworth>: Hmm. Friend group...? That sounds a little embarrassing, but thank you, followers.
<Kay>: Hmm. I feel that followers and friends are a little different. Well, as long as he’s happy.
<Edgeworth>: Let’s say that tomorrow we’ll spend more time with our followers on Tweeter.
-----
<Gumshoe>: I've been waiting for you, Prosecutor Edgeworth!
<Edgeworth>: Mm. Good morning Detective Gumshoe. It's rare for you to get to court earlier than me.
<Gumshoe>: That’s because I have to set a good example for my followers! I skipped dinner last night so I wouldn't be late.
<Edgeworth>: What does skipping dinner have to do with getting up early?
<Gumshoe>: Well, it sets a “belly clock”, so you wake up at breakfast time!
<Edgeworth>: (There are too many problems with that, and I don't feel like pointing them all out... I’ll just stay silent.)
<Gumshoe>: Mr. Edgeworth ... We can see the tweets of your inner voice, you know…?
<Edgeworth>: It's about time for the court to open. I'm heading into court without any uncertainty today.
-----
<Kay>: Hello everybody! I'm Kay Faraday, also known as the Great Thief Yatagarasu. Fufufu ... I’m actually in the gallery right now! I wanted to see Mr. Edgeworth and Gummy in court, and keep an eye on the enemy!
<Kay>: Oh! Mr. Edgeworth screamed, “Objection!” This is the 5th time today. The other lawyer is sweating now. The judge’s gavel is getting fierce! Eh -- what? “You can’t tweet in the courtroom…?” Hey!
<Kay>: Uh ... I was kicked out of the courtroom. As expected by the new rival of Ace Attorney Investigations 2, Justine Courtney! She seems like a kind judge, but also very observant.
<Kay>: This is an unexpectedly strong enemy! Mr. Edgeworth, are you okay ...?
<Edgeworth>: Kay. What were you doing in the gallery today?
<Gumshoe>: I was surprised to see Kay being kicked out of court!
<Kay>: I didn't think that tweeting was prohibited. As a Great Thief, this is the ultimate mistake!
<Edgeworth>: If you have time to regret breaking the rules of the court, use it to learn a little more about them.
<Kay>: If I had to leave the court anyways, I wanted to have a cooler exit, befitting of a Great Thief!
<Gumshoe>: … I don’t think she regretted breaking the rules.
<Kay>: Anyway! You’ve already finished your work today, right?
<Edgeworth>: Yes, I finished my work in the courtroom today. It looks like we can have a nice holiday.
<Kay>: So, why don’t the three of us go play together! Bowling, karaoke, game centers, etc.!
<Edgeworth>: No ... I'm not very good at such things.
<Gumshoe>: Since it’s Friday night, why don’t we play around and recover from working hard! I think watching movies would be fun!
<Kay>: Yeah, you worked so hard this week! Now, let’s go play!
<Edgeworth>: *sigh*. Whatever I say, it’ll be a waste of time… If we must, at least make it a movie.
-----
<Gumshoe>: This Saturday morning is a nice time for a walk! I sometimes take a walk with Missile to build strength and give him training. As the “partner” of Prosecutor Edgeworth, I want to be useful in Ace Attorney Investigations 2!
<Gumshoe>: When investigating with a metal detector or collaborating with Missile, I will be second to none! Hey, Missile! Hmm? Is a scent bothering you? Aaaaa! Mi-Missile has run away! He must’ve smelled food.
<Gumshoe>: When this happens, I have to rely on the odor to chase after it! This is part of the investigation process! Uh… I lost him right away. When this happens, I have to prepare sweets that Missile likes to lure him in! …  I’m so overwhelmed.
<Kay>: It’s a shame to keep Missile as a police dog. He stole away Samurai Dogs from this Great Thief and ate them…! I was trying to eat with Ema.
<Gumshoe>: Sorry about that, pal. By the way, what were you doing together? Collecting fallen leaves…?
<Ema>: We’re grilling Samurai Dogs on this fire we made from scientific chemicals!
<Gumshoe>: Huh. Scientific chemicals, pal…? Mi-Mi-Mi-Mi-Missile! Do you feel alright?
<Kay>: It’s fine! He ate it before we started the fire.
<Gumshoe>: Oh. I wish I got to have some...
<Edgeworth>: It’s not good to use chemicals to play with fire, Ema. Scientific research is important, but please use moderation.
<Ema>: Yes! Moderation! By the way, are you going somewhere?
<Edgeworth>: Yes. I have some business. ... I don't have much time, so excuse me.
<Kay>: ... Mr. Edgeworth, where are you going?
<Ema>: Fufufu. In this case, we can follow his footsteps! Using the power of science… in moderation!
<Kay>: Alright! Let's follow him… in moderation!
<Gumshoe>: They both have a strange definition of “moderation”...
-----
<Kay>: That overwhelming scale! I think I’m going to cry! That’s a first for an orchestra concert!
<Ema>: The powerful sound of brass instruments and the splendid melody of woodwind instruments! Scientifically speaking, changing between different sounds is what makes music good.
<Edgeworth>: Umm. While I was looking forward to today, I didn't expect you two to follow me.
<Kay>: I wanted to bring Gummy as well, but he had to walk Missile, so he couldn’t come with us.
<Edgeworth>: The detective can still hear the “Ace Attorney Investigations 2 Orchestra Arrangement Collection” CD. You can pre-order one at E-Capcom.
<Ema>: I already pre-ordered it, of course! I’ll also get the 1:10 figure of Mr. Edgeworth!
<Edgeworth>: A 1:10 figure of myself? I don't remember measuring my height, but ...
<Kay>: That's because I stole Mr. Edgeworth's height perfectly!
<Edgeworth>: I'm a little hesitant to say it in the orchestra hall, but let me just say one word.
<Kay>: "Objection!"
<Edgeworth>: Wha…? How did you --!
<Ema>: This must be the famous technique of the Great Thief, stealing the words right out of his mouth! How informative!
-----
<Edgeworth>: I have no plans today, so I will spend my time reading at a nearby coffee shop. Naturally, I want to relax on Sundays.
<Edgeworth>: I’m drinking high-quality black tea in a comfortable sunny place. Today is going to be a good day off.
<Edgeworth>: Speaking of which, the other day, a follower named “Wendy” greeted me here on Tweeter. I don’t know how to return messages, so I haven’t done so yet. Let me thank you here. Ms. Wendy, thank you for following me.
<Oldbag>: E… Edgey-pooooooo! I finally found youuuuuuu!
<Edgeworth>: Gah! What are you doing in this coffee shop ...!?
<Oldbag>: No way, Edgey-poo! Just now, didn’t you say this on Twitter? Didn’t you just say “Ms. Wendy, thank you”? You made this old lady so happy! I just ran around all the coffee shops and searched for you everywhere, Edgey-poo. The power of lo
<Edgeworth>: Do you talk too much to fit on Tweeter? So, “Wendy” was you! No matter how many coffee shops you visit, there’s no way you found me so easily… Are you hiding something?
<Oldbag>: If you say that without evidence, you’d tarnish the title of “prosecutor!” I have nothing to hide from my dearest Edgey-poo!
<Edgeworth>: Hmm… Even without evidence, if I read your reactions and feelings, I can expose the truth while only using my words.
<Oldbag>: Oh, I heard about this, Edgey-poo! Isn’t it called “Logic Chess”? I know everything about you, Edgey-poo!
<Edgeworth>: What do you mean by “I know everything?”
<Oldbag>: You see, it’s because I’m a security guard. Recently, because the whippersnapper who was there before me got fired, I was temporarily guarding the prosecutor’s office. At that time, I just so happened to see your address, Edgey-poo.
<Edgeworth>: …………… I didn’t even need to pull out information, and you’re already telling me the answer!
<Oldbag>: Oh. It was a slip of the tongue. I thought I would get to see Logic chess.
<Edgeworth>: Well, could you see it in Ace Attorney Investigations 2? Please excuse me, I have very important business to attend to.
<Oldbag>: You mentioned that you have no business today! Today, I will never let you go!
-----
<Edgeworth>: Ngh… That was quite the disaster today.
<Edgeworth>: I was too careful just because it was a holiday. I was neglecting my remarks and wasn’t vigilant of those around me ...
<Edgeworth>: Mm? Now “Tweeter” is showing something from “Wendy”. … “Sorry. - Wendy.” … I’m not going to respond to that!
-----
<Gumshoe>: Prosecutor Edgeworth, did you hear? Agent Lang is coming from the Republic of Zheng Fa!
<Edgeworth>: Hm. Is he also involved in an international case? I didn’t have the opportunity to talk to him for long the last time. If I have time, I’ll go greet him.
<Gumshoe>: The last incident was a difficult one. I couldn’t talk much with Agent Lang’s subordinates, either.
<Gumshoe>: There are 100 people who know about it.
<Edgeworth>: If you tried to talk to everyone, the sun would set before you did.
<Gumshoe>: To be honest, I gave up trying to remember my own face and name.
<Edgeworth>: That’s just being lazy!
-----
<Lang>: Yo, Mr. Prosecutor. It's strange to see you in a place like this.
<Edgeworth>: It's been a long time, Agent Lang. I never thought we would meet again at a restaurant like this.
<Lang>: I just happened to see this place while I was looking for somewhere I could go alone.
<Edgeworth>: Alone ...? That’s unusual for you. Aren’t you usually with your subordinates?
<Lang>: Well… Lang Zi says: “To know the feelings of a lone wolf, you should leave the pack.” Sometimes I do things on my own.
<Edgeworth>: Is that so? However, I see a contradiction right there on your table.
<Lang>: Hah! Is that the prosecutor’s famous “deduction”?
<Edgeworth>: For someone eating alone, you ordered a lot of “platters”, which seem to serve over twenty people.
<Lang>: Arooooooo! ‥‥Oops. It seems I have a habit of ordering too much. If you don’t mind, Mr. Prosecutor, would you take a little?
<Edgeworth>: It seems that you’re not very good at acting alone.
-----
<Kay>: Eh? Agent Lang’s coming here again?
<Edgeworth>: Ah, yes. Unlike before, though, it seems like he’s acting alone for some reason.
<Kay>: Isn’t that because it’s difficult to sneak around with too many people? It’s an important rule for a Great Thief!
<Edgeworth>: He is an “international investigator”, not a “Great Thief”. … Anyway, he seemed to come to this country for some purpose.
<Kay>: Then, we might meet him again at a crime scene.
<Edgeworth>: Even if we both desire to pursue the truth, our paths often run counter to each other. If I meet him in the field, we may argue.
<Kay>: That’s nice. I also want a rival that will change me as a person! Ahh… I wonder if they’re out there… the rival who wants to hunt down the Great Thief!
<Edgeworth>: If you want to be arrested so badly, ask Detective Gumshoe.
<Kay>: Ugh! You just don’t get it!
-----
<Kay>: It's finally February!
<Edgeworth>: Oh. So it is...
<Gumshoe>: I'm looking forward to February 3rd!
<Gumshoe>: At our police station, we will sow beans for the bean-throwing festival! February 3rd is a precious day when you can eat soybeans for free!
<Kay>: Every year, I challenge myself with how many beans I can throw! “Out with the demons, in with the fortune, and in with the Great Thief’s treasure!”
<Edgeworth>: Did you forget the most important thing?
<Kay>: I was just kidding! Of course I remember what’s happening February 3rd!
<Gumshoe>: There is no reason to forget the release date of Ace Attorney Investigations 2!
<Edgeworth>: Mm ... I hope.
-----
<Edgeworth>: It’s three days before the game goes on sale. I hope the followers look forward to it as well.
<Edgeworth>: Investigating in winter is necessary, even if it’s cold, and you can’t catch a cold before the game goes on sale. Ergo, please take proper measures against the cold.
<Edgeworth>: Speaking of which, Detective Gumshoe wears the same coat all year round. Doesn’t that get cold? Ah… maybe it’s just that his salary is too low to buy anything else.
<Edgeworth>: ……… Should I invite Detective Gumshoe for dinner? What little I know about his eating habits worries me. I don’t think he’d eat instant noodles in winter…
<Edgeworth>: There is a handmade udon restaurant near the prosecutor's office. The taste is satisfying for a reasonable price. ‥‥‥‥‥‥ Though, when it comes to inviting Detective Gumshoe, I shouldn’t limit myself to just noodles.
<Edgeworth>: Mm. I tweeted that it was only 3 days before the game’s release, but it was 2 days. I worked all night in the office yesterday. It seems my sense of time has gone haywire.
<Edgeworth>: What I tweeted then was contradictory… Pardon me. Thank you, followers who pointed that out.
---
<Gumshoe>: This pork roast is delicious! This is my first one of the year!
<Edgeworth>: Detective Gumshoe. Stop eating while tweeting!
<Gumshoe>: I've been eating only plain pasta this year. I couldn’t help myself!
<Kay>: I could, but I still tweeted!
<Edgeworth>: It may not be instant ramen, but his eating habits are always in crisis.
<Gumshoe>: Ugh... every time I make a mistake while investigating, the cost of living becomes a crisis.
<Kay>: But the one who is in the most danger right now is Mr. Edgeworth, isn't it? I saw it in a commercial! He’s having his “biggest crisis!”
<Gumshoe>: I heard it too ... What kind of mistake did you make, sir?
<Edgeworth>: Don’t compare me to you! I don’t know what it is, but I’m not afraid of any crisis. No matter what happens, I simply do what I think is right.
<Kay>: As expected of Mr. Edgeworth! Well, you can always count on this Great Thief to help you in an emergency!
<Gumshoe>: Of course, I will help too! If you want to manage your living expenses in a crisis, sir, just leave it to me!
<Edgeworth>: First, could you try helping me as a detective?
-----
<Kay>: By the way, Mr. Edgeworth, what kind of person is your father?
<Edgeworth>: … Why would you suddenly ask such a question?
<Kay>: I just asked Mr. Shields. He said your father was a very good person! I also respect my dad, so I was a little curious about yours.
<Edgeworth>: When I was a child, he was someone I highly respected, and… the kind of man I aspired to be.
<Kay>: Huh? Is it different now?
<Edgeworth>: ……… About that… It’s difficult to explain. If you want to know the answer, please wait until tomorrow.
<Kay>: I see! The answer is hidden in Ace Attorney Investigations 2. I’ll be sure to steal the truth about Mr. Edgeworth!
-----
<Kay>: Gummy! Please decorate it from the right side!
<Gumshoe>: Here it is! Oh no, the decoration fell!
<Edgeworth>: What are you doing in my office in the middle of my workday?
<Gumshoe>: I’m off duty, but since today’s the eve of the release date, I’m preparing a party!
<Kay>: It's almost time to tweet! Mr. Edgeworth, please work and just ignore us!
<Edgeworth>: If you truly want that, then please stop climbing on my desk. … I’ll finish work soon, so please wait until then.
<Kay>: Eh! Are you going to help us?
<Edgeworth>: I would like to celebrate.
<Gumshoe>: That’s helpful, sir! Then, I’ll be sitting on the sofa and waiting until it’s time!
<Edgeworth>: ‥‥‥‥‥‥‥ Just wait in the corridor.
-----
<Gumshoe>: Cheers for the release of Ace Attorney Investigations 2!
<Edgeworth>: Hmm ... This party for the eve of the release is rather nice.
<Kay>: Ehehe. Tomorrow, we’ll give it our all!
<Edgeworth>: Umm. Thank you very much.
<Kay>: This is the last of our tweets ... It's a little regrettable.
<Edgeworth>: But I’m glad I had this opportunity to directly express my gratitude for the week. Those who were watching our tweets… let me thank you again.
<Gumshoe>: I still have something to talk about, but we’re already out of time!
<Kay>: But the eve of the release has only just begun! After this, you can talk to the development staff of “Ace Attorney Investigations 2” directly!
<Gumshoe>: Oh! Is that the plan?
<Kay>: I’m certain, because it’s information I stole from Capcom! It seems like it will start around 18:00!
<Edgeworth>: I do have a lot to ask, but let's leave that to the followers. Well then, excuse us for now.
<Edgeworth>: If you have any questions for the development staff, please quickly send them in!
------
Translation notes first:
The localized foods are as follows:
dorayaki -> Samurai Dogs (since Missile also has a habit of eating those, though I don’t believe the original was dorayaki?)
somen -> instant ramen
katsudon -> pork roast
shirataki -> plain pasta
The “bean-throwing festival” is Setsubun, a festival where you toss soybeans and eat some in order to toss out bad luck and bring in good luck (to my understanding, please correct me if I’m wrong). What Kay said (minus the Great Thief part) is one translation of  a phrase you shout while throwing the beans. I obviously gave up on trying to localize this.

Request for your special event-
Character: Albedo
prompt: 'I love you, my little prince"
Song: Once upon a dream: Lana Del Rey
If it is possible, Can the reader be the one to say the prompt and is a fatui harbinger [or someone that the knights are just wary off] ?? (I am a sucker for forbidden love but the reader is just "screw u, Imma date them anyways) I apologize if this is too specific.
Thank You in advance and Congrats on your milestone!! <3
First of all, thank you very much for your request. I love this song and Albedo, so it really was the perfect combination. Also, this turned out a lot longer than I originally planned, and I really hope you like what I came up with. Have a good day/night and take care! <3
Once upon a dream – Albedo x gn!Fatui!reader
I know you, I’ve walked with you once upon a dream
I know you, the look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
And I know it’s true that visions are seldom all they seem
But if I know you, I know what you’ll do
You’ll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream
Mondstadt was beautiful at night. Although most of the shops were already closed, the streets were still filled with people, sitting in front of the taverns where they enjoyed a few drinks and the balmy breeze that blew gently through the alleyways. Everything was peaceful and somehow quite idyllic, and you stopped in your track to take in all the impressions that rained down on you.
In your life, you had barely experienced moments like this. As a member of the Fatui, you were always on the road, traveling wherever your Archon sent you and fulfilling every mission she gave you. It was a restless life, dangerous too, but you had never been one to complain, especially since you had always dreamed about exploring Teyvat, seeing other cities and meeting new people along the way. Without the Fatui, you probably would still be stuck in Snezhnaya where you would be doing the same things every day, always wondering if this was all life had in store for you.
Needless to say that you still felt incredibly honored that the Tsaritsa had chosen you, alongside with a few other Fatui Diplomats, to accompany Signora, one of the Eleven Harbingers, on her trip to Mondstadt. So far, the trip had been everything but fun, every day filled with work and duties, including spying on the Knights of Favonius that were understandably weary of every Fatui who set foot in their city. Most of them kept their eyes on you twenty-four-seven.
Even now, during your rare free time, you could feel the guards watching you as you made your way back to the market district. A couple of people were standing outside of Cat’s Tail, laughing and joking around, just like they usually did. By now, you recognized most of them since you came by here every day. It was one of the few spots in Mondstadt where nobody payed attention to you because they were too busy with minding their own business to wonder about a Fatui Diplomat passing by, eyeing them curiously before walking on.
Your destination was the upper square, the one with the pretty fountain, right in front of Good Hunter. You had enjoyed a few meals there over the past few days (people where rightfully proud of the restaurant) but at this late hour, the shop was already closed, promotional signs neatly stored away.
You sat down on one of the benches near the fountain and crossed your legs as you let your eyes wander. During the day, this square was a popular meeting spot but now, there were only a few people here. The perfect opportunity to see him again.
During the few meetings with the Knights of Favonius you had attended, he had stayed in the background, only speaking when someone addressed him directly and even then, his answers had been quite brief. It hadn’t taken you long to figure out that he preferred to keep to himself, hence why he almost exclusively came here long after dark to inspect the Crafting Bench for any damages and to have a quick conversation with Timaeus, the alchemist who supervised the Crafting Bench throughout the day.
Usually, you kept your distance, admiring him from afar, but today, you had promised yourself to finally introduce yourself to him. Not only because it was rude to stare at someone you barely knew but also because a considerable part of you really wanted to find out who the Chief Alchemist truly was.
You didn’t have to wait long. Propping up your head on your hand, you watched him as he talked to Timaeus. His bright teal eyes almost seemed to glow in the warm light of the street lamps, and you couldn’t help but smile at the sight. It really should be illegal to be that pretty.
About twenty minutes later, Timaeus made his farewells to the Chief Alchemist, leaving him with a bunch of notes. It took you a brief moment to realize that this was the moment you had waited for but then, you jumped to your feet and took a deep breath before walking over to him.
“Excuse me,” you said, your heart starting to beat frantically as he looked at you, a slightly confused expression on his face. “Yes?”
“I’m sorry to bother you,” you continued and cleared your throat when you realized how squeaky your voice was sounding. “But I think you might have dropped this.”
You put out your hand, showing him the tiny gemstone you had bought at With wind comes glory a few hours ago. The stone’s color perfectly matched his eyes, the same bright teal that you saw in your dreams sometimes. You were absolutely sure that nobody else on this earth had eyes so pretty that you even thought about them in your sleep.
“No, I’m afraid you’re mistaken,” he replied softly, snapping you out of your thoughts. “It’s not mine.”
“Oh,” you mumbled. Well, that didn’t go as planned, you thought and let out a quiet sigh. So, what else could you say to him?
Usually, you had a quick tongue and always managed to figure out a topic to talk about but right now, you felt like every statement that came to your mind was either incredibly stupid or completely irrelevant. Think, you urged yourself, think!
But he had already lost interest in you. His attention was back on the clipboard Timaeus had handed him earlier, his brows slightly furrowed as he studied the notes from his assistant.
“So, um- can I perhaps ask you a few things about alchemy?” you asked when the silence between the two of you got uncomfortable. He didn’t look up from his notes but at least, he nodded which you took as a good sign.
“I mean, not now,” you added, painfully aware that you didn’t even know enough about alchemy to ask him a simple question. It definitely would have been better to prepare for this conversation but now it was too late to turn back. “I just – I wanted to make sure that you’re okay with helping me before I deluge you with my questions.”
Finally, he looked up, his gaze meeting yours for a brief second. “Ah, it’s you. I saw you at the meetings. You’re one of the Fatui Diplomats,” he said but unlike others, he didn’t seem to judge you. He simply stated a fact, nothing more. If anything, he sounded a bit curious.
“My name’s (Y/N),” you replied, in an almost desperate attempt to keep the conversation going because a part of you really didn’t want him to leave. When you saw the small smile that flashed over his face, you felt like your heart stopped for a second.
“I’m Albedo.”
But if I know you, I know what you’ll do
You’ll love me at once, the way you did
Once upon a dream.
That’s when it all had started. Whenever you weren’t busy with your mission or other tasks Signora assigned you to, you spent every minute with Albedo, listening to his musings about alchemy and the secrets of the world he desperately wanted to disclose. You didn’t understand half of the things he was talking about but you didn’t mind. It was enough for you to just listen to him, watching how his eyes lit up whenever he made progress in his research, and every time he sheepishly thanked you for keeping him company, you found yourself falling for him a bit more.
Of course, you knew right from the beginning that it was stupid to develop feelings for him, given the fact that you had to leave Mondstadt at some point to return back to Snezhnaya – but there was nothing you could do to stop it. Everything about Albedo was adorable. He was a gentle soul, curious and kind and so beautiful that it still took your breath away every time you look at him. And you wanted to be with him, against all reason. There was just something about him that seemed so familiar, so wonderfully familiar that you simply didn’t have the power to resist him.
And before you had even fully realized what was happening, you were already head over heels in love with him.
You didn’t tell him, at first. After all, he was still the Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favionius and you were still a member of the Fatui, someone the knights didn’t trust at all, and you didn’t want to spoil the precious time you could spend together.
But eventually, you didn’t want to keep it a secret any longer. You wanted him to know how much he really meant to you. It had been an awkward confession, your face hot from embarrassment when he didn’t respond immediately but as soon as he softly asked if it would be alright to kiss you, you fell in love with him all over again.
I know you, I’ve walked with you once upon a dream
I know you, the look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
And I know it’s true that visions are seldom all they seem
But, just as all good things, your relationship with Albedo came to an end about three months later when new orders from Snezhnaya arrived, recalling you and the other remaining Fatui Diplomats back to your home country immediately. Signora and the vast majority of her team had already left Mondstadt quite a while ago, and it would be a lie if you said that it hadn’t raised your hopes up that you were allowed to stay for a little longer.
Now, all your hopes were shattered to pieces. You could feel tears burning in your eyes as you stared down at the letter in your hand, reading the orders over and over again as you tried to understand that it was really over this time. There was no way you could convince your superior or even the Tsaritsa to prolong your deployment in Mondstadt.
How were you supposed to tell Albedo about this? How were you supposed to say Goodbye to him?
You should have stayed away from him right from the start. Then, you would have been the only one who got his heart broken by your new orders but no, you had decided to drag Albedo into this mess, and now you were forced to leave him.
You buried your face in your hands. This was slowly becoming just one big nightmare, one that threatened the wonderful, silly dream you had about your future. A future you wanted to share with Albedo. But of course, you couldn’t, not as long as you were a Fatui. And you couldn’t leave them either because you had sworn an oath to the Tsaritsa; you had sworn to be true to her and Snezhnaya, no matter what happened, and to break this oath had never been an option for you. Heck, you probably wouldn’t even survive betraying your Archon like that, let alone get the happy ending you wished for.
So, no matter how you put it, you had no other choice than to return to Snezhnaya.
*
You couldn’t sleep, contrary to Albedo who was sound asleep next to you, all snuggled up to you and completely unaware of the emotional rollercoaster you had been experiencing for the past few days. You had waited for the perfect moment to tell him that you had to leave but of course, it never came. There simply was no perfect moment to tell the person you loved that you couldn’t stay with them any longer, that you had no idea when you’d be able to see each other again. If you would ever see each other again.
And with that in mind, you had decided that it was for the best to just leave. Albedo would be heartbroken, yes, but he would be angry, too. And maybe that anger would be enough to make him move on from you. But for now, you wanted to enjoy the time the two of you had still left. The Fatui delegation would leave Mondstadt in the early morning, as agreed with the Acting Grandmaster, so you still had another two, maybe three hours you could spend by Albedo’s side.
You turned your head to press a soft kiss to Albedo’s cheek. He mumbled something in his sleep, and when you heard your name, your heart dropped. He was dreaming about you.
He was dreaming about you and you were about to leave him without even saying Goodbye.
*
Dawn came and with it the moment you had feared for the past few days. But you had made your decision, and it was too late to change your mind.
Carefully, you tried to pull away from Albedo who was still clinging to you, his arm wrapped tightly around your waist, almost as if he had sensed that this would be the last night you would spend together. You felt terrible as you pushed his arm aside, freeing yourself from his hug, although every part of you screamed to stay here with him.
But you had to leave. And until now, everything went just as you had planned.
Until you accidentally knocked the small lamp on the bedside table over when you gathered the few belongings you hadn’t packed up yet.
Albedo stirred awake, his eyes fluttering open, confusion clouding his eyes.
“(Y/N)?” he asked, his voice still heavy with sleep. “Where are you going?”
You bit your bottom lip, trying to fight back the urge to tell him the truth, and leaned back down to brush a strand of hair from his forehead. “Nowhere,” you reassured him softly. “You’re just dreaming, my love. Go back to sleep.”
Your fingertips caressed his skin, gently tracing the outlines of his face as you watched him slowly drifting off to sleep again.
“I love you, my little prince,” you whispered and pressed a soft kiss to his lips one last time before you turned away and quietly left the room. Please forgive me.
The walk to the town gate gave you enough time to regain your composure. By the time you joined the others, you had carefully locked away your emotions, putting on that blank expression that didn’t show how much it hurt you to leave this city.
Lyudmila, one of the other Diplomats, gave you a brief smile. “Looks like we’re all here,” she said. “Let’s go home. We’ve spent way too much time here already.”
You nodded, although you couldn’t help but flinch at the word home. Snezhnaya would never be your home again, not when Albedo couldn’t be there with you.
Maybe one day, you thought to yourself and granted yourself one more look at Mondstadt and the town walls that almost seemed to glow in the warm light of the rising sun, we will meet again.
But if I know you, I know what you'll do You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream.

[ENG] Molech Voice Drama
Tumblr media
Es: [footsteps]
Shido: Hm?
Es: Sorry to have kept you waiting. [footsteps] Prisoner number 5, Shido.
Shido: No need to. Thank you for all your hard work, Es.
Es: Now then, Shido. Let’s begin the interrogation.
Shido: Very well. Please go ahead.
Es: [hesitates] Ok. Let’s see... Milgram exists to reveal the sins of you, prisoners, and to hand down the appropriate judgement. So, for that reason, talk to me for a bit.
Shido: Understood. Please take good care of me from now on.
Es: [pauses] Even if this is referred to as an interrogation, at this moment in time, I don’t plan on using violence. In addition to that, any falsehood or silence from you will be acknowledged.
Shido: I see. I might refrain from voicing anything I don’t want to say, but I have no intention of lying to you.
Es: Shido, how’s life in Milgram? Do you have any complaints about its environment? Or have any issues arisen from the other prisoners, etc?
Shido: No particular inadequacies really come to mind. And, my fellow prisoners haven't particularly caused any issues either. Es, I wonder if this is the fruit of all the governing you do? It’s remarkable.
Es: Not really. [hesitates] Hold on a second, Shido.
Shido: Yes? What is it?
Es: This is… I know it’s me who’s getting things mixed up here, but…  In comparison to all the interrogations thus far, this one has been progressing far too smoothly; it feels somewhat unsettling.
Shido: I’m not sure what to say to that...
Es: Hm. [footsteps] Shido, do you seriously not have any reservations about Milgram?
Shido: Well, let’s see. I mean, without a doubt, it’s clearly a strange place. Its architectural style and the written script it uses are things I’ve never seen before either. If you were to say I was having a dream or a vision, then that would make more sense to me.
Es: Hm.
Shido: But, all things considered, I’m still very much conscious. My pulse rate is within its normal range. And, I can’t find any symptoms to suggest that I’m hallucinating either. So, I don't exactly find that idea to be very convincing.
Es: Oh?
Shido: Other than that... If this is the afterlife, then this place must be hell. But, if I set that idea aside, then… This is just real life. I, myself, am in normal condition; it’s where I am which is unusual. I may not know the reason behind this place or how it works, but even if I tried to escape from the reality of it, nothing would really change, right?
Es: You sure are composed, aren’t you?
Shido: That’s just my personality. I just simply don’t think bad of it—this place, I mean.
Es: You mean, Milgram?
Shido: Yeah, this place will put me to death.
Es: What?
Shido: I might not get a golden opportunity like this again, so I’ll get straight to the point. Es… You decide how the prisoners will be dealt with, right?
Es: Yeah. That’s right.
Shido: The death penalty is what I’m hoping for. Thank you in advance.
Es: I won’t have that. The lot of you can’t decide what your own treatment will be. Only I as the prison guard have the authority to do so.
Shido: Exactly. You as the prison guard have the right to do such a thing, Es, so that’s why I’m asking you for this favour.
Es: [scratches head, sighs] In regards to your sin, what I’ve gathered so far is that you both regret and have already reflected on your actions. On top of that, you’re also seeking to receive the maximum penalty we have to offer. So, let’s use that information. The idea that I’ll be taking your behaviour into consideration is nothing more than a mere presumption.
Shido: [hesitates]
Es: And, of course, I haven’t thrown away the possibility that you’re only doing this to get on my good side either.
Shido: Hm. I honestly have no idea what you and Milgram are setting out to achieve. You mentioned something about extracting songs and videos from our hearts, and then using them to judge our sins, didn’t you?
Es: Yeah. And, what of it?
Shido: There’s no need for you to go through such a cumbersome process. If you want to hand down the correct punishment for me, then all you have to do is put an end to my life and it'll be over in a blink of an eye.
Es: You’re being annoyingly persistent, Shido! Know your place here.
Shido: Please listen to me, Es. I’ve killed people. Lots of them as well. It was for such a selfish reason too. I’m a fine specimen of what a genuine murderer ought to be. [footsteps] There’s no reason for you to forgive me. And, I don’t have the desire to be forgiven either.
Es: I really don’t...get you.
Shido: If you don’t put me to death, then neither the people I’ve killed nor their families will be at peace. Don’t you think so too?
Es: As if that’s my business. I haven’t necessarily sided with your victims and I’m not a family member of theirs either.
Shido: [sighs]
Es: [sighs] Anyway, the only thing I’ll be deciding on is whether or not I forgive you. I don’t even know the details of what punishment will follow after that.
Shido: Is that so? Es, I suppose you were left in the dark about many things as well just like the rest of us.
Es: Knowing what happens to the lot of you afterwards might prevent me from making a straightforward decision about whether I should forgive you or not. So, it’s to avoid that from happening. Were you aware of that?
Shido: Hm… But, this place does smell of the dead though. I’m sure that some sort of death will lie at the end of Milgram.
Es: Smell of the dead?
Shido: Yes. I can somewhat recognise it from experience… A place which is filled with the smell of the dead, that is.
Es: Is...that so? Well, either way, Milgram is a three-trial system. It lets me take my time to decide on whether or not I should forgive you. Even if you wish for the opposite, if I decide that you should be forgiven, then it’ll do just that without any hesitation.
Shido: A three-trial system, right? It’ll take far too long, don’t you think? I’d rather this all be over as soon as possible.
Es: Like I care about what’s convenient for you. Don’t complain about the rules.
Shido: So, if it’s a three-trial system… Then, for example, if you absolutely can’t find it within yourself to forgive me and I don’t lodge an appeal in response, will my treatment be decided on the spot?
Es: That’s the three-trial system according to Japanese law. Milgram’s one is different from that. For the time being, you really should throw away what would be considered common sense there. I mean, if we’re gonna bring up Japan… Due to the abolition of the Prison law, this sort of prison shouldn’t even exist in the first place. (1)
Shido: Wow…
Es: What is it? You’re going all wide-eyed.
Shido: Ah, well… I was just thinking about how despite being a child, you’ve really done your research on this.
Es: Hey. [footsteps] You trying to make fun of me, is that it?
Shido: What? Oh, no. I wasn’t trying to do anything like that.
Es: You were. Something’s been on my mind ever since the very beginning… “Es, this. Es, that.” It’s the belittling way you refer to me…  I’m the prison guard, you know that?
Shido: Oh, I’m completely aware of that. But, you’re still a child in actuality. Coming from me, who’s almost twice the age as you are, I just…
Es: What is it?
Shido: For a child like you to be entrusted with this sort of role… My heart goes out to you.
Es: Excuse me?
Shido: I don’t know what circumstances you face while guarding this prison nor the reason as to why you’re doing it, but I’m sure that it must take a toll on you emotionally as well. So, please do your best. [pats head]
Es: [is shook] I see. Oh, I see now. So, that’s how it is. So, that’s how it’s gonna be. [deep breaths]
Shido: Hm? Es?
Es: Don’t you dare… pat my head like that! [kicks]
Shido: [grunts] Please hold on for a second.
Es: Phew, I feel so much better now.
Shido: S-suddenly kicking my shin like that…wasn’t very nice of you.
Es: Shut up! Out of all the prisoners thus far, you’re the one I can’t stand the most. Going all pessimistic like that, running your mouth as if you knew everything, acting as if you’re oh-so mature, and never budging from that composed expression of yours—the nerve of you! On top of that, you even went so far as to pat my head. Do you think I’m your child? Do you?! Don’t fuck with me!
Shido: Didn’t you say that you wouldn’t use violence?
Es: It’s on a case-by-case basis.
Shido: What a thing to say.
Es: Hey, Shido. What the hell do you mean by "I want to die"? Don’t you dare try to insult me with that. Plead for your life with every fibre of your being! Our instinctive desire to stay alive is the very reason why punishments for our sins exist. To Milgram and to me, your very existence is sacrilegious!
Shido: Es…
Es: If your shin gets kicked, you’ll feel pain, won’t you? And if it hurts, you’ll cry out, won’t you? You’ll tear up, won’t you?
Shido: Yeah…
Es: Well, take that! Even if you boast about wanting to die, the pain you just felt is the exact same thing as your body screaming that it doesn’t want to.
Shido: [pauses]
Es: While you’re still alive, you should be grabbing life with both hands! Don’t act as if you’re already dead. An adult like that has no right to treat me like a child. It makes my skin crawl. End of discussion!
Shido: I see… If I feel pain, then it’s proof that I want to live?
Es: Hmph!
Shido: [sighs] Well, with that being said, here’s my counterargument to it. It was the nociceptors in my shin which felt that pain. So, it's nothing more than a reaction caused by pain signals being transmitted to my spinal cord and then to my brain. That phenomenon is called nociceptive pain.
Es: What?
Shido: What I’m saying is… Even if I do want to die, pain is something which will still involuntarily occur. And therefore, you, Es, were making a mistake in your claim.
Es: That's so immature of you.
Shido: [laughs] It’s payback for kicking my shin like that. But, you know, I think it was an amazing mistake to have made. It was so radiant...to the point where it made me want to turn away. Just as I thought, you truly are a child…but that makes me incredibly happy.
Es: Shido… [mechanical noises] It’s time, huh.
Shido: So, this is what will be “extracting songs”? It sure is intriguing. I wonder what mine will be like.
Es: Composed no matter what, aren’t you? Is there anything left you'd like to say?
Shido: Oh, yeah. I don’t know about what the other prisoners may think about Milgram itself, but…  I fully agree with it.
Es: Sure seems that way.
Shido: I’m a fine specimen of what a murderer ought to be. I don’t mind when you hand down your judgement, but if it's possible… Instead of being told by the law that I won’t be forgiven, I wanted a child like you, Es, to tell me that.
Es: What?
Shido: I feel sorry that you had to be given this role. And, I truly apologise for being so insistent about sentencing me to death as well…  But, you’re perfect. You’ll give me the ending I’m most suited for.
Es: [hesitates] Y-you… What’re you saying? A special request like that is so...
Shido: [laughs] Well, I wonder. I'm just trying to get you to punish me as of now.
Es: [hesitates]
Shido: I look forward to you handing down the correct judgment.
Es: You’re making a false presumption there. It’s the fact that it’s my judgment which makes it correct! That’s what Milgram is.
Shido: Then, I look forward to what you deem to be ‘correct’.
Es: Hmph. Say whatever you want.
Shido: Please make sure you don’t forgive me. Okay, Es?
Es: [scoffs] Don’t make me say it over and over again! I don’t give a shit about what you’re hoping for. Prisoner number 5, Shido. Come now. Sing your sins!
「監獄」 [kangoku] were essentially comprised of 「刑務所」 (for those people serving a sentence) and 「拘置所」 (for suspects, those who were awaiting a sentence or those on death row).  They operated under 「監獄法」 (the Prison Law). However, due to abolition of the Prison Law in 2007, those facilities are no longer called 「監獄」, but are now referred to as 「刑事施設」.

Bad Timing (Levi x reader) Part 11
Tumblr media
Summary: How do you tell your friends that you’re falling for your big brother’s best friend?
Word Count: 8.2K (longest one yet)
__
The next few days flew by in a snowy blur. Most of your time was spent wrapping gifts and packaging baked goods to deliver to family friends. You grunted as you leaned heavily on top of the Tupperware container as you shoved in more sugar cookies. This particular batch was going to Erwin's coach and his family. The sound of wrapping paper tearing made you cringe, turning around you saw Hange holding up the two uneven lengths of paper. She smiled sheepishly at you before shrugging and taping the pieces together once more. Your mom and Erwin were currently out shopping at the mall, which was a good hour away from the hick town you lived in.
You and Hange had already been out shopping the other day. It had been very stressful shopping for all your friends and family. You were glad to have gotten the ordeal over with. Although it was stressful, you had enjoyed picking out the perfect gift for your loved ones. Some highlights included: a camera lense for Armin, a set of chain necklaces for Mikasa, a turkey hat for Sasha, a safari hat for Connie, and your personal favorite was a set of fancy tea cups for Levi.
You really had outdone yourself this year, even going as far as buying Erwin supplies that he would need for College. For Hange you had purchased her a fresh set of glassware for her experiments, since she was majoring in Chemistry and enjoyed doing work outside of the classroom you thought it was a fitting gift. Hange held up her finished product proudly, judging by the size of the box you guessed it was a pair of shoes.
"I can't wait to give these to him!" she gushed as she set the box to the side and began folding a sweater that the two of you had purchased for your mom.
"Yeah I'm sure he'll love them." you agreed. You weren't the only one who had splurged this year. Hange had bought Erwin a fresh pair of cleats for his freshman season at college.
"I hope so!" she chuckled as she boxed the sweater and the pair of earrings for your mom.
"What did you ask for this year?" you asked as you set the stuffed container of cookies to the side.
"Oh nothing special." Hange waved her hand dismissively. You weren't surprised, she wasn't exactly interested in possessions. She valued knowledge above most things, so the closest you could get to filling that need was to give her books or items that helped her learn and shit. You had learned that the hard way, a few years ago you had given her a nice bracelet, which was currently collecting dust on her dresser.
"Well what about your parents, are they doing something special this year?" you inquired, you knew that she had learned to appreciate knowledge from them. They used to go on trips and spend Christmas soaking up the culture of wherever they went. One of their most notable trips was to South America, Hange's favorite trip to date. They hiked in the jungle and learned about the environment and shit.
"Aw sadly no, they wanted to take a break and focus on their research here." She shrugged as she wrapped the box in snowman wrapping paper.
"Really?" you mused, although Hange's family was unconventional you admired their free spirit.
"Yeah, I'm particularly interested in my mom's project, she's studying these penguins in South America right now-" she continued to ramble on about her mother's studies and her father's work. Both of her parents were very active in the zoology community. Hange's rant was cut short by the sound of her phone ringing, she apologized before answering the call, walking out of the room for some privacy. Which you thought was odd, she usually wasn't so private with her phone calls, which at times could be annoying. You brushed it off as most likely being a conversation about gifts. You picked up your phone, taking the opportunity to answer the text that Mikasa had sent you earlier that morning.
"We'll be over around 7." her text made you feel giddy with excitement. Although this year would be a bit different you were still excited to see all your friends.
"See you soon!" you responded, you realized that it was probably a good idea to start dinner for your mom. She should be home any minute but still you set about preheating the oven for the casserole and the ham. Thankfully the Jeagers brought dishes as well, Carla made a mean pumpkin pie. You weren't expecting Kenny to bring anything other than booze. You fell into an easy rhythm as you prepared the vegetable casserole. It couldn't have been more than an hour later that your mom and Erwin stumbled in the door and dropped the bags down by the card table where we had been wrapping gifts. Your mom was quick to wash her hands and start the mashed potatoes as you checked the ham. Hange had began to set the table with Erwin, a christmas playlist had been playing to set the mood.
The Jeagers arrived right at 7, just in time. Grisha's arms were full with gifts, Carla toted two pies, Eren held a board game, and Mikasa had two bottles of red wine with ribbons around the necks of the bottles. Hugs and formalities were exchanged as they entered and put their gifts under the tree. Carla joined your mom in the kitchen to finish carving the ham. You and the other teens finished setting the table as everyone trickled into the dining room.
Just as the ham was placed on the table and glasses of wine were poured, the doorbell rang once more. Kenny had arrived, surprisingly only thirty minutes late. He had a huge bottle of vodka and another sizable bottle of whiskey. Your mom greeted him, taking the liquor from him and pointing him to his seat. Now that all guests were accounted for you began to dish out food and recount the past holidays that your families spent together. It didn't go unnoticed that Kenny was a tad uncomfortable, but thanks to Grisha's easy going nature and Carla's friendliness, he slowly eased up. Of course you and the other teens had your own conversation separate from the adults.
"-Do you remember that one year that I creamed you guys in Just Dance?" Hange gloated as she waved a forkful of ham in Eren's face.
"Ugh yes, but only because that was the year that Mikasa's ankle was sprained." Eren deflected, lifting his own fork to push hers from his face. Mikasa blushed and shoved a spoonful of mashed potatoes into her mouth.
"Well I guess we'll just have to see if that was the real reason after a rematch!" Hange teased before biting into the hunk of meat.
"I guess we will." Eren narrowed his eyes as he watched Hange chew the meat.
"We should play Mario Kart first, I want to redeem myself." Armin was quick to change the subject. Always quick to avoid possible conflict.
"Yeah I totally creamed you last time!" you gloated a cocky smile on your lips.
"W-What! No I had the most wins!" Eren's eyes were alight with anger. He was too easy to piss off.
"Wrong!" you said in a sing song voice.
"Knock it off you two." Erwin scolded from across the table, Eren's cheeks flushed when Erwin scolded him but you simply rolled your eyes. In the last few months Erwin had taken to hovering over you and your friends. It was strange, he had never shown so much interest in your social life until recently. At first you had been eager to tell him what was going on in your friend group, but now it was becoming annoying.
"Lay off Erwin, it's all talk." you scoffed with a roll of your eyes. Erwin's eyes hardened at your snarky tone, your guests eyes flickered between the two of you as you glared at one another. Until finally you snorted and looked away with a shake of your head.
"Uh...so who wants pie!" Armin, ever true to his anti confrontation nature filled the thick silence between the teens. Meanwhile the adults had continued to yammer on about all the hot hospital gossip.
"I-I would." Eren played into Armin's excuse to change the subject.
"Yeah sounds good." you sighed, defeated. Armin scrambled out of his seat and ducked into the kitchen, returning a few moments later with the pies. He dished out three pieces onto you and Eren's plates before serving himself. By the time he had returned, Hange had already changed the topic to the party the following day. You sat in silence as she rambled about the logistics for the party at your house.
"I think that Nanaba is bringing mac and cheese, Mike is probably going to bring those snicker doodles that he always makes-" You tuned her out, not interested in her current rant. Tomorrow's party wasn't the party you were really excited for. So you instead turned to Mikasa, hoping to talk about your plans for the 26th.
"So what time are you going to Annie's? Would you like to ride together?" you asked as you angled yourself to face her to better tune out Hange.
"We are heading over around 9, and sure I'm driving." Mikasa responded as she stretched to serve herself a piece of pie.
"Perfect, are you spending the night there?" you quizzed, unsure if you also wanted to spend the night there.
"No, we were going to go back to Armin's but I can drop you off here if you want." Mikasa answered as she took a bite of pie.
"Alright that sounds good!" you agreed, knowing that Mikasa was always a reliable designated driver.
__
Dinner had gone relatively smooth, despite the tension that now hung in the atmosphere between you and Erwin. The rest of the evening was spent in the living room opening gifts with a Christmas movie marathon playing in the background. The Jeagers left around eleven, which was later than they usually stayed. Kenny took the guest bedroom in the basement, since he was spending Christmas day with your family anyway. You checked your phone with a heavy sigh, already it was twelve am. You contemplated texting Levi to tell him happy birthday, but you weren't sure he would be awake. It was already six in the morning in France, and usually he got his three hours of sleep between four and seven in the morning. But you decided that if he didn't answer you could leave him a voicemail or shoot him a text. So after you changed into your pajamas and had snuggled beneath your covers, you pulled up Levi's contact, your thumb hovering over the small phone icon. Finally you just said 'fuck it' and pressed the button, the phone rang three times before he answered.
"Hey." his voice was thick and gravely as he spoke, immediately you felt bad. You knew that you must have woken him up and you cringed internally.
"Hey happy birthday!" you greeted, making sure to keep your voice low so you wouldn't disturb Erwin and Hange.
"Tch thanks." Levi mumbled, you pictured him running a hand down his face as he tried to wake up.
"you're welcome birthday boy." you teased as you fell back onto your pillows.
"shut up." Levi scoffed, you could hear his footsteps as he walked through the apartment, presumably to get his morning cup of black tea.
"you know you love it." you sighed.
"keep telling yourself that." Levi's voice was becoming clearer now that he was more awake.
"I think that I will." you answered with a light laugh.
"you still going to that party tomorrow?" Levi interrogated, you groaned. You had almost forgotten how he liked to stick his nose in your business, even when he was across the fucking ocean.
"Yeah what about it?" you huffed, feeling a bit defensive.
"Shouldn't you stay with your family or some shit." Levi sounded frustrated.
"My mom said I could go." you pouted childishly.
"Whatever." Levi grunted, and you frowned, unsure of where his frustration was coming form.
"Aw come on no need to be jealous, I'm sure you can find some rager in Paris. Not like you'll be missing much here." you chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.
"Hmph." Levi scoffed, you could hear the tinkling of his spoon as he stirred his tea.
"So....when are you due to be home?" you asked, deciding it was best to change the subject.
"Next week." Levi's tone was clipped.
"I'm so jealous." you sighed dreamily.
"Yeah Paris is way better than Shiganshina." Levi responded nonchalantly, you weren't sure if he was being serious or sarcastic. Either way he was telling the truth.
"No need to rub it in my face." you chuckled.
"Tch." He scoffed, you liked to imagine him smiling as he did so, even if he wasn't.
"Well I hope that this next week goes by fast, as much as I hate to admit it I've... missed you." you confessed, the tips of your ears scorching hot with embarrassment. The silence was deafening as you waited for him to say something, hell anything even if it was making fun of you.
"Whatever." he huffed, the butterflies in your stomach fluttered at the sound of his baritone voice.
"Just don't stay out late tomorrow." he quipped and you frowned, why did he care how late you stayed out?
"No need to worry about me, I'll probably just stay sober with Mikasa." You told him, only half honest.
"Never said I was worried about you." Levi sighed.
"Hmph fine be like that." you scoffed and rolled your eyes, not surprised with his response.
"Be like what?" He asked, genuinely curious what you meant.
"Like an ass." you quipped.
"Tch I'll quite being an ass when you stop being such a brat." Levi snapped, clearly you were approaching dangerous territory.
"Okay okay chill." you muttered, backing down before things got too heated.
"You're the one that brought it up.." Levi pointed out.
"Yeah and now I'm regretting that" you sighed, wishing he wouldn't be so stubborn for once. He sighed as well and you heard a small clatter on his end of the line, you figured he was starting the dishes.
"Look I've got some shit to do, I'll call you later okay?" Levi's voice was a tad strained and in the moment of silence you heard the sound of Isabel and Farlan bickering in hushed tones.
"Y-Yeah sure of course." you couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed.
"Happy birthday Levi." you wished him once more.
"Thanks, talk to you later brat." and with that he hung up, leaving you totally alone in your dark room. You plugged your phone in and rolled over onto your side, he could be so annoying. You inhaled sharply and decided that you would enjoy the party tomorrow to it's fullest. What he didn't know wouldn't kill him.
___
"Hey can I borrow your lip gloss?" you asked Mikasa as you leaned forward to apply another coat of mascara to your lashes.
"Sure which one?" she asked as she pulled her hair into high pigtails on top of her head.
"The cherry one." you answered after a moment of contemplation. She finished her hair before reaching into her makeup bag and pulled out the tube of clear gloss.
"Thanks." you said as you took the make up from her. You didn't usually put this much effort into your appearance when you went to parties but you figured since it was the first time you would be going to Annie's that this was a special occasion. Also you had a sneaking suspicion that two of your exes would be there and you at least wanted to look hot if you were going to get black out.
Plus Mikasa was also dressed up, she wore a tight fitting black top with long sleeves and a low cut neck line that showed off her pale collarbones and neck. She had chosen to wear a choker that had metallic studs surrounding the black leather along with some other layered necklaces. To match her top she had selected a red plaid skirt and some torn tights. You weren't dressed nearly as edgy as she was, but you too had gone for a grungier look. You'd opted to wear a tattered pair of mom jeans along with a black cropped tank and an oversized flannel to cover your shoulders.
You sighed as you finished applying the gloss and frowned, Eren and Armin were in the next room over blasting Post Malone. You assumed that Eren was on aux since Armin usually listened to Surfaces or Khalid.
"You ready?" Mikasa asked as she pulled on her Doc Martens and double checked her earrings.
"Yeah." you assured her as you stood up to grab your small backpack with an extra change of comfy clothes in case you ended up staying the night. The two of you left the room and knocked on Eren's door that was down the hall.
"Just a minute!" Armin's shrill voice sounded a bit panicked but Mikasa simply shrugged and headed towards the kitchen. The Jeager's house was a ranch style house with one main floor and a nice basement. The two of you waited patiently in the kitchen for the boys, it was already well past nine. You scrolled through your snapchat, most of the stories were the regular group picture of friends having a sleepover, the druggie kids showing off their weed, and of course Sasha and Connie posted a video showcasing the house party at Annie's. From what the short video showed, her house was dark except for some LED lights that flashed through multiple different colors. The music was deafening, and the kids that you could see seemed to be swaying to the pulsing music.Sasha spun the camera around as she knocked back a shot with her arm around Connie who blew a puff of vapor at the camera.
"Looks fun." Mikasa scoffed, you knew that she preferred more low-key parties.
"If you end up not liking it we can always dip." You shrugged, knowing that this wasn't exactly your speed either. Mikasa hummed in agreement and turned to look down the hallway as Eren's door opened. The boys emerged from Eren's room, Eren wore a pair of black jeans and a dark forrest green long sleeved shirt. Armin wore a baby blue knit sweater with a collared shirt underneath and black jeans as well.
"All set?" Mikasa asked as she turned to pull out a bottle of titos with a cute little sweater over it. You smiled at the cute accessory and nodded.
"Yep!" you said popping the p as the four of you all made your way out to Eren's car. You slid into the back seat next to Armin who was fiddling with the hem of his sweater nervously. Eren resumed his hype music as Mikasa backed out of the drive way. Eren pulled out his puff bar as soon as the car was out of the drive and took a long drag. Mikasa scoffed and cracked the window for him. He blew the billow of smoke out the window and reached to turn the music up. He reached back and dangled the puff for you to take, after a brief moment of hesitation you accepted it and cracked your window before taking a hit. Armin watched with wide eyes as you inhaled and blew the vapor out the crack.
"Since when did you vape?" Armin asked, his mouth agape in awe.
"I don't...at least not regularly." You admitted sheepishly.
"That's what they all say." Eren chuckled, smoke curling out from his lips as he smirked.
"Shut up I'm serious!" you snapped a playful smile on your face. Thankfully Annie's house wasn't far away, about a twenty minute drive. You pulled up to the house, it was huge. Standing at least three stories tall, with a long winding driveway. Mikasa pulled up behind one of the many cars in the drive way and parked the car. Mikasa led the way around to the side door, which was unlocked, piled of shoes littered the hallway. The sound of loud music greeted you as you walked into the kitchen on the main floor to set the alcohol you'd brought down. The real party was in the basement.
The lights were off, leaving the only source of light to be the flickering LED lights, you couldn't even tell who was who. The air was heavy with the mingling aromas of cologne, vapes, and weed. Armin practically clung to you as the four of you waded through the crowd to get to the seating area in the center of the room. As you got closer the overpowering scent of weed assaulted your nose. There on the large L shaped couch was Annie, she held a large bong to her lips as Bertolt held the lighter under the weed, she inhaled deeply and the bong bubbled. She pulled back and blew a puff of smoke right in Reiner's face, the blonde's face scrunched up in disgust as he turned away to cough.
"Yo." Annie greeted Mikasa who leaned down to dap her up. Once Annie had greeted Mikasa she turned her attention to Eren who was eyeing the bong.
"You want a drag?" Annie offered, patting the sofa next to her. Eren nodded and dropped down between her and Bertolt, who once again struck the lighter for Eren. Mikasa rolled her eyes and waited patiently for Eren to finish his drag. Once the bong was out of the way she lowered herself down onto his lap and pulled her puff bar out to take a long drag. Armin shifted awkwardly behind you and tugged on your sleeve.
"Want to go get something to drink?" he yelled over the booming music, you glanced at the bong longingly but decided that Armin needed you right now so you nodded in agreement.
"Sure." the two of you pushed through the crowd to the minibar where an impressive amount of liquor was waiting. You poured some Bacardi into a glass of and added some pineapple and orange concentrates before handing the cup to Armin. He thanked you and quickly got to work on finishing the mixed drink. You poured yourself a rum and coke and then two shots of Malibu for you and Armin to take. The two of you knocked back the shots before wandering back over towards the couch. The crowd had thinned out a bit, something about watching a movie in Annie's in home movie theater.
"-No that's bullshit, I know for a fact that you pissed your pants in the second grade Eren!" your eyebrows shot into your hairline at the words leaving Annie's mouth.
"Just because I'm quiet doesn't mean I don't notice shit." She huffed as she lifted the juul in her hand to her lips and took a long drag.
"I-"
"Just take the L Eren we all remember." Bertolt shook his head and chuckled at Eren's flushed cheeks. You glanced at Mikasa, usually she would defend Eren but she seemed content to let him struggle through this one on his own, still perched on his lap.
"We've all had accidents before." Armin said with an awkward chuckle as he sat down beside Annie, who looked at him with a blank expression.
"Like that time you tripped down the stairs and broke both your legs in fourth grade?" Annie quipped, a small smirk curling onto her lips. You choked on your drink at Annie's remark, she was an absolute savage.
"Exactly..." Armin flushed, lifting his own cup to his lips. Your phone buzzed in your pocket, but you were too invested in the conversation to be bothered to pick it up.
"Want a hit?" Annie offered the bong to you, you nodded. Although you'd never had weed before, you'd tried asking Levi for some of his but he always denied you. Annie held her hand out to Bertolt who placed the lighter in his open palm. She packed some more weed into the bowl before handing you the bong.
"You ever done this before?" She asked as she kneeled in front of you. You shook your head,
"Okay so I'll tell you when to inhale, and you've got to take a huge breath so you can get the smoke in your system. But then you'll have to take another breath to get it in your lungs." she instructed as she pressed the weed deeper into the bowl.
"Okay." you agreed, she nodded and struck the lighter, holding the flame over the weed in the bowl. You pressed your lips to the mouth piece and waited for her instructions.
"Inhale." she said once the weed was lit. You sucked in a big breath and the water in the bong bubbled. The smoke burned the insides of your throat as you inhaled it, you pulled the bong off your mouth and sucked in once more to get the smoke into your lungs. She nodded in approval as you coughed, smoke curling out of your mouth.
"Not bad for your first time." she commented as she took the bong from you and passed it to Mikasa who took a long drag before passing it to Bertolt.
"Thanks, that stuff burns." you coughed, Annie sat down next to you on the couch and draped her arm over the back. You felt the buzz from the weed and the shots you'd taken earlier, making your head spin a bit. Annie's thigh brushed against your own, you tried to focus on what she was wearing, a pair of grey sweats and a cute cropped peachy colored tank top with spaghetti straps.
"I like your top." you complimented, her hand fell from the back of the couch to your shoulders.
"Thanks." she said, turning to gauge your reaction to her touch. You swallowed a bit nervously, you'd known Annie since kindergarten, but you'd never really been friends before, she was always so quiet.
"I always thought you were a good kid." Annie smirked, her eyes a bit playful.
"What made you think that?" You giggled, shuffling closer to her.
"Your brother is like the school's golden boy, and you are always in all the honors classes." she shrugged, you frowned. You were used to people coming up with these assumptions. She was right though, you did take honor classes, but that didn't mean you couldn't party!
"I guess...But that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy partying." you countered.
"I suppose." she chuckled, taking a hit from her juul and blowing the smoke away from your face. Your phone rang in your pocket and you frowned, as you dug it out of your pocket. Your frown deepened at the sight of Hange's contact lighting up your screen.
"Hang on I should take this." you apologized, moving to stand up to find a quiet place to answer the phone. Annie snatched your wrist and pulled you back down on the sofa, the room spun as you fell back down and slumped against her shoulder.
"Slow down there sweetheart." Annie chuckled as you leaned against her.
"I got to go answer my-"
"Nah just stay here, enjoy yourself." Annie pulled you closer, but your head was too foggy to protest, thoughts of your phone already fading into the back of your mind as Annie held the bong to your lips once more.
__
"She's still not answering." Hange chewed on her knuckle as she glanced at Erwin who was gripping the steering wheel. His brows were knit tightly together with worry, Levi shifted in the back seat, tapping his fingers impatiently.
"This is stupid, she can wait until tomorrow to see me." Levi huffed, trying his best to sound indifferent.
"Oh don't say that Levi." Hange frowned as she looked back at Levi, her eyes deep with worry.
"Don't worry about it." Levi grunted, turning his attention back to his phone. He opened snapchat, and scrolled through the stories. His eyes widened slightly when he stopped on Sasha's story, the video of the party played, he found himself looking for your silhouette among the swaying bodies. He tapped on his screen, expecting to move on to the next story, only to find a new video, added to her story less than ten minutes ago. A video of you with a red solo cup in one hand, and a juul in the other. You were leaned up against a blonde girl who was pushing a bottle of Pink Whitney against you, the pink alcohol sloshing in the glass.
"Come on (Y/n) finish it off!" Sasha encouraged as the other kids on the couch picked up on her chant.
"Finish it, Finish it." the crowd cheered as you sat down the cup and took the bottle from the blonde. You looked at the camera as Sasha shuffled closer.
"No pa-paparazzi please." you giggled, hiccuping half way through your sentence. You lifted the bottle to your lips and tilted your head back, the liquid spilled down your front, making your skin glisten in the colorful lights as you chugged the alcohol you managed to get in your mouth.
"Fuck yeah!!!" Sasha jeered, spinning the camera around to her face. The video ended and Levi felt his blood boil. He'd never seen you so out of it before and he hated it. He hated how easily you had given into doing something so stupid, he hated the sight of the juul in your fist, he hated the way the girl's arm was tightly wrapped around your waist, but most of all he hated that he wasn't there.
"Wait, I think Sasha's snap map is on." Hange mumbled, her phone screen casting a pale glow over her glasses as she zoomed in on Sasha's bitmoji. Sure enough Sasha's bitmoji was on the map, surrounded by at least twenty other bitmojis gathered in one location.
"Okay let's head that way then." Erwin sighed as he started the car and backed out of his parking spot in the airport parking lot. Erwin pulled out of the small airport that was about thirty minutes away from your town and set off towards Annie's house. Thankfully Annie lived on the outskirts of town so it wasn't as far of a drive. It wasn't long before Erwin was pulling up a long winding drive that was full of cars. He parked at the back of the line of cars and got out of the car with a heavy slam of his door. Levi slammed the back door of the minivan as hard as he could, the two of them marched up the driveway silently with Hange following nervously.
"You guys please slow down it's icy out here." Hange begged as she slipped on one of the steps to the side door. The three of them piled into the house, Hange knew it was bad when Levi didn't bother to kick his shoes off before continuing towards the basement steps. Erwin stormed down the steps, the music getting louder as they descended. Erwin paused at the bottom of the steps to take in the scene, cups littered the floor, the room was hazy with smoke from juuls and the scent of weed clung to the air. A group of partygoers was crowded onto the couch, Levi's eyes narrowed onto the back of your head.
"Yoooo that's ice cold." Eren's loud voice could be heard over the music as the teens passed the bong between one another.
"No it's the truth." you slurred, the empty bottle of alcohol still in your fist.
"Well sorryyy that I forgot that I had gum in my mouth." Connie said, waving his hands in front of his face.
"You're an idiot." Sasha laughed boisterously as she shoved a handful of pretzels into her mouth.
"damn straight." Annie agreed, taking the empty bottle from you and setting it on the coffee table. Erwin stalked across the room and stood behind Bertolt, who was now on the floor. The conversation came to a halt at the sight of the uninvited guests.
"Woah I think I'm seeing things." you said, tilting your head downwards as you tried to understand why you were seeing your brother.
"Me too." Reiner agreed, his own distant gaze honing in on his team captain.
"Get up we're going home." Erwin's voice was cold and commanding as he glowered at you.
"I don't wanna leave." your eyes hardened with denial. Erwin stepped over Bertolt, once he had moved your eyes landed on Levi, who was glaring at you with those dark eyes.
"I'm definitely seeing things." you grunted as Erwin pulled you off the couch and away from Annie's warmth.
"Hey man she said she didn't want to go." Annie snarled, jumping to her feet, her icy blue eyes sharp.
"Yeah well she's drunk as shit and doesn't know what she's saying." Levi snapped back at Annie, who had a hand clamped down around your arm. Hange shifted nervously behind the couch as she watched the scene unfold.
"You need to leave." Annie growled, pointing a finger at the stairs.
"That's what we're trying to do dumb ass." Levi growled, taking a step closer to the circle of teens.
"Leave her alone she can make her own decisions." Reiner quipped, rising to his own feet.
"Stay out of this Braun." Erwin ordered, releasing you so he could turn and face Reiner.
"I'm just saying, she chose to come here on her own and she's enjoying herself so let her be." Reiner shrugged.
"She's had enough tonight." Erwin countered, shifting his gaze back to you as you swayed on your feet.
"No I haven't" you frowned up at Erwin.
"Yes you have. We're leaving end of discussion." he said with finality, once more reaching for your wrist.
"I'm not leaving Erwin." you protested, pulling yourself free from his grasp. He snatched your wrist once more and tugged you away from the circle. You gasped and stumbled after him, the protests of your friends echoing loudly in your head. Erwin hauled you up the stairs and out the side door, Levi and Hange close on your heels. He only slowed once you were walking down the driveway. You wrenched yourself free once more with a strangled cry.
"I said I don't want to leave!" you screamed, a few tears sliding down your cheeks.
"You always embarrass me in front of my friends just give me this one night!" you cried, the cold air making your face beet red.
"You'll thank me later." He said simply before turning to continue down the driveway.
"No I won't I'm going back inside." you turned on your heel and marched back towards the door, only for Levi to catch your wrist.
"You've had enough for one night." He scolded as you struggled against his hold. Hange chewed on her bottom lip with worry at the sight, this was not how she planned your reunion.
"Levi let me go." you said with finality as you met his eyes.
"No, you're going home." Levi's voice was tense.
"No I'm not."
"(Y/n) you're going home and that's final." Erwin sighed, running a hand down the side of his face. You spun around and glared at him.
"You're not my fucking dad Erwin so quit acting like it! Jesus it's so annoying I'm tired of it!" you screamed, your chest heaving with frustration, your breath coming out with puffs of vapor. Hange and Levi stood deathly still, knowing that the topic of your father was a sensitive one.
"Fine be that way." Erwin snarled and marched to the van and climbed in with a slam of his door. Hange rushed to get in the car without a second glance over her shoulder. Levi remained firmly rooted to the ground, his hand still wrapped firmly around your wrist as you cried.
"Get out of here Levi." you sobbed, shaking your arm to throw his hand off. He finally let you go, his head tilted down to the ground. You huffed, wrapping your arms around your chest before turning on your heel and stalking back towards the house. Levi stood there a moment longer just listening to the sound of your receding footsteps before he padded back to Erwin's car and slid into the backseat.
__
Your head was spinning as you pressed your back against the bathroom door, your lip quivering as you tried to contain your tears. You knew that you'd hurt both Erwin's and Levi's feelings, you also knew that they were only trying to help you. But there was only so much help you could except from them without them toeing the line between helpful and overbearing. You slid down the door with a whimper, you hugged you knees to your chest and rested your chin on top of them. A knock startled you out of your moping,
"(Y/n)? You in there?" You groaned when you recognize Jean's voice.
"Open the door please." He said softly and you felt more tears fall down your cheeks as you reached up for the knob to unlock the door. The lock clicked and you shuffled to lean agains the wall so he could open the door.
"Hey" he said as he stuck his head in, his amber eyes soft with worry.
"Hey" you sniffled, turning your head up to meet his gaze.
"What's wrong?" He asked, slipping into the small bathroom and closing the door behind him. He crouched down in front of you, his elbows propped on his own knees as he got onto your level.
"Well for starters, you kissed someone else when we were talking." you said a bit venomously. He cringed and plopped down to sit criss cross applesauce instead.
"I'm sorry I know that I shouldn't have done that but, I've been really confused....like sexually I guess." He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and your frowned.
"I know, but it still hurt my feelings." you mumbled, a few fresh tears falling from your watery eyes.
"I shouldn't have led you on like that, it was a real jerk move." Jean agreed, his eyes still soft and comforting. You'd missed being his friend you realized as you sat on the cold tile.
"I've missed talking to you." you spoke your mind, managing a small smile.
"Me too, let's be friends again?" he proposed, offering his hand to you. Your smile grew wider as you extended your own hand to grasp his. You shook hands briefly.
"So are you and Marco a couple now?" you asked.
"Sort of.." Jean chuckled.
"You want to go back to the party now?" He asked, jutting a thumb towards the door. You nodded, although now you were beginning to sober up. He stood and offered his hands to help you to your feet. You accepted his hands and he pulled you to your feet. The two of you walked slowly down the steps to rejoin the circle of teens in the living room. Jean stopped at the bottom of the stairs his hand held loosely in your own. He squeezed your hand, asking for your attention. You turned and faced him, a questioning look on your face.
"You've got some-" He chuckled, lifting his thumb to his mouth and licking it before wiping away some rogue mascara off your cheeks. You gasped in mock offense as he wiped away the makeup.
"You're not my mom." you teased, pulling your face free as you turned to head back into the fray, trusting that Jean got all the black marks off your face.
"Nobody could replace Angie." Jean agreed as he followed you into the basement. The group of previously rowdy teens was now subdued due to your brother and his meddling party crasher friends.
"Hey look who's back!" Reiner greeted, causing all the heads to turn back to you. You smiled sheepishly and dropped back into your seat next to Annie.
"You alright?" She asked, her eyes scanning you meticulously for any signs of injury.
"Yeah I'm- I'll be alright." you stumbled over your words as the group watched you carefully.
"You want a uh beer or something?" Connie asked, lifting up an unopened can.
"No she doesn't you idiot!" Sasha snapped, elbowing Connie harshly.
"Ow well I was just trying to make her feel better!" Connie cried, turning to tackle Sasha. The two began to tussle, rolling around on the floor grunting as they struggled. You smiled, the pair never failed to make you happy. Annie draped her arm over you again as the boys began to place bets on who would come out victorious.
"If Sasha wins you've got to drink one of Connie's mixed drinks!" Eren said, leaning over to Bertolt who scoffed, his boyish features contorting with disgust. Connie was known for making the worst mixed drinks.
"You're on Jeager." he reached over Reiner and the two shook in agreement before turning their attention to the scuffle.
"Come on Sasha!" Eren jeered as Sasha bit down hard on Connie's hand. The boy yelped and tried to desperately pry her locked jaws off his hand. He gave up quickly and resorted to hitting her head with his closed fist, his face wild with panic.
"Tickle her neck" Mikasa suggested as she lifted a red solo cup to her lips. Your eyes widened in surprise, Mikasa usually kept quiet during these scuffles, unless of course it was Eren being thrown around. Connie's free hand flew down to Sasha's armpit and immediately Sasha released his other hand to roll away from him. Connie regained the upper hand, pinning Sasha beneath him as he tickled her ruthlessly. Jean groaned and slapped a wad of bills into Reiner's open palm as Sasha slapped the ground in defeat. Connie threw his hands into the air and rolled off Sasha who was fighting for breath.
"Traitor" she moaned, her brown eyes glaring at Mikasa who shrugged indifferently. Eren groaned and frowned at Mikasa.
"Why'd you do that?" He asked as Bertolt looked relieved. Mikasa shrugged once more a sly smile on her face as Eren pushed her off his lap.
"So" Connie jumped to his feet and clapped his hands together.
"About that drink." he turned and strutted over to the mini bar, followed by a sulking Eren and a smug Bertolt. You turned to Sasha who was now straddling Mikasa her hands around Mikasa's shoulders as she jostled the girl.
"Come on Mikasa why'd you sell me out like that?" she whined as she shook the girl, Mikasa's drink sloshing in her cup. Mikasa smiled as her eyes drifted to the group of boys, Connie had a large bottle of Tito's and a two liter of Mt. Dew in his hands as he inspected the two, his face scrunched up with concentration.
"Come on Sasha it's not like you wouldn't do the same if it were me." Mikasa scoffed with a roll of her eyes. You snorted at Mikasa's response, knowing that she was indeed correct. Sasha gasped and shook Mikasa harder.
"I would never do that to you! Besides you would win in any fight you fought." Sasha objected, leaning back on Mikasa's lap her arms extended.
"Psh whatever." Annie scoffed, a playful smirk on her lips.
"Not all of us are masters at kickboxing." Sasha pouted as she climbed off Mikasa's lap and dropped onto the empty space next to her. You knew that Mikasa had participated in the sport for the past few years, but you were confused when Sasha looked between Annie and Mikasa.
"What you didn't know?" Annie asked with a smirk. You shook your head,
"No I guess I don't know." you laughed as Annie licked her lips and she threw her arm back over your shoulders.
"Mikasa and I are on the same kickboxing club." She shrugged as you settled back into her side. Your mouth opened into an 'o' shape in realization as Annie dug her juul out of her pocket and took a hit. Mikasa nodded in agreement, her eyes shifting back over to the boys, who were laughing loudly as Eren chugged a cup of mystery liquid.
"Really? I had no idea." you said as you followed Mikasa's gaze. Eren was now leaned over gagging as Armin patted his back with a worried expression.
"-You dodged a bullet there!" Reiner quipped as he patted Bertolt's back as the tall boy watched with a disgusted face.
"Hey where did Ymir and Krista run off to?" Sasha asked, whipping her head around to look for the pair.
"Probably making out in some corner." Reiner scoffed as he dropped back onto the sofa, the rest of the boys rejoining the group as well. You nodded in agreement, it was no secret that the pair had been seeing each other recently.
"Guess so." Sasha sighed, slumping back into the sofa, throwing a glare at Connie who was now seated next to her with an arm over the back of the couch. Eren and Armin were the only once unaccounted for, you assumed that they had fled to the bathroom given the state Eren had been in after drinking Connie's concoction. Jean had managed to slip away with all the commotion, probably to return to Marco. Annie sighed, glancing at her phone with a frown, it was well past three at this point and you were starting to feel the fatigue.
"Well I think that I'm heading off to bed." Annie yawned, the others seemed to be mellowing out as well.
"You guys can crash here or my brother's room is open as well as my sisters rooms." She said as she stood up. You immediately missed her warmth as she lingered by the couch.
"I call Eric's room!" Sasha perked up, also standing up to run towards Annie's younger brother's room.
"No fair!" Connie yelled, giving chase. Mikasa sighed and stood up as well.
"I'd better go check on Eren and Armin." She mumbled as she stalked off towards the bathroom.
"Are you staying the night then?" Annie asked you as you also stood up, not sure if you should go after Mikasa.
"I'm not sure, Mikasa was going to take me back to her place..."
"You can sleep in my room with me." She offered, tilting her head towards the stairs. You bit your lip as you weighed your options. Mikasa had been drinking and smoking and you knew that she wasn't stupid enough to drive so you figured that you weren't leaving any more.
"We'll sleep in Sarah's room." Reiner said as he and Bertolt began to retreat up the stairs. Leaving just you and Annie in the basement living room, she raised a brow as she waited for your answer.
"No pressure." She said as she began to walk towards the stairs.
"Yeah I'll sleep with you." you blurted as you jogged to catch up to Annie. She smirked at your wording and you flushed.
"Not like that!" you slapped her arm as she led the way up to the top floor which was a maze of closed doors. She slipped into one of the closed doors, into a large bedroom with a queen sized bed in the center of the room. She emptied her pockets before climbing into bed, pulling the covers back for the both of you. You slid into the open side and sat your phone on the bedside table. Annie sighed with relief as she nestled into the covers, scrolling through her phone as you closed your eyes in an attempt to sleep. After a few minutes Annie put her phone down and rolled over, now her front was facing your back.
"You awake?" She whispered, you rolled over to face her as well.
"Yeah" you answered, resting your head on your arm as you focused on her features as best as you could in the dim lighting.
"You wanna make out?" she asked, your eyes widened in shock. You weren't sure if she was being serious or not.
"For real?" you blinked rapidly as Annie shuffled closer and pushed a lock of hair out of your face.
"I mean yeah." she huffed a shy smile on her face. You pursed your lips in thought, you had never kissed a girl before, and it wasn't like the thought of doing so had never crossed your mind. You shrugged and leaned slightly into her touch.
"Yes or no." She said as she propped herself up on her elbow so she was looking down on you.
"Sure." you agreed, she leaned down as soon as the words left your lips. Her lips were so soft compared to the boys that you'd kissed in the past. Her hand that had been in your hair now traced over your cheek bones as she licked your bottom lip. You opened your mouth for her to slip her tongue in, the taste of weed and pink whitney mingling on her breath. You met her tongue a bit timidly as she licked your bottom teeth. She pulled back after a moment to readjust herself so that she was now laying down on top of you, caging you in her arms as she leaned down to kiss your chin.
"You're so cute." she mused, her lips pressed against the corner of your mouth.
"You're really pretty" you breathed as her lips hovered over your own once more before connecting her lips with yours once more.

Sic Semper Monstrum, Chapter 5
[Read on AO3]
Written for @vfordii‘s birthday which was....five months ago. BUT LISTEN, it’s still better than last year’s six months so like...improvement. IMPROVEMENT.
“You know why I called you here.” The Marshal’s voice is soft, barely louder than the hum of the fluorescents. “I presume.”
Shirayuki catches herself at the edge of her seat, chest pitched forward, neck craning to decipher every word and--
She settles back with a frown. Even a PhD isn’t a defense to the cheapest tactic on the pop-psych bookstore self-help shelf, it seems. Worse, Izana knows it, his mouth tipped so subtly toward a smile. And now he knows she knows it, and--
Her mug has gone cool, but it’s at least a credible distraction, a convenient way to buy some time and save face. Not something she ever expected she’d care about. Doesn’t mean she won’t take the opportunity.
“Zen.” The ceramic clacks like a shot as she sets it down. “You want to talk about the drift.”
“Yes.” He breathes, long and labored. “And no. I want him back in the cockpit.”
Come see me at your earliest convenience, his email had said, practically polite by PPDC standards. Manners atrophied when a body spent so much time in the higher altitudes of the chain of command.  I’d like to discuss a few things with you.
She’d known what this would be about. What it was always going to be about. And still--
Shirayuki is still disappointed. “You have to be joking. It took him three years to get him into a jaeger at all, and you want to just...push him right back in.”
“No,” he hums, fingers still and steepled over his desk. “I want you to do it.”
There are rules of engagement for tangling with the Marshal. Voices are to be kept low, steady. Think before speaking. Don’t react. Showing an emotion in front of Izana Wisteria would be as good as handing him a rope to hang her with. “I’m not his commander.”
His fingers knit, knuckles popping in the silence-- “I know that, Doctor.”
Her own are curled into fists; at least then he can’t see them shaking. “Then I don’t know what you expect me to do.”
“I wouldn’t presume to tell you how to do your job,” he tells her, with only a pause for breath before he does. “I am merely suggesting that it is far past time to remove the kid gloves you have been handling him with.”
Her fists clench, hard enough to leave vivid crescents in the meat of her palms. “I believe I’m the judge of that.”
“Of course.” Every word drips with insincerity. “But I’m sure a little encouragement from you would--”
“I’ll do what’s necessary for the health of my patient,” she informs him, words clipped. “You’re not my commander.”
Izana stills, gaze riveted to her. “I am well aware of that, doctor. But I need him in a jaeger yesterday.”
“You’ve needed him in a jaeger for the past three years.” Shirayuki bolts to her feet, and oh, if only she could locate at least another foot of height, she might be able to finally have the high ground in one of these arguments. “I don’t see what the rush is now.”
His voice doesn’t raise above a pleasant chat, but bitterness weighs down every word. “You should.”
Shirayuki doesn’t believe in violence. Or rather, violence is a choice, and she doesn’t believe in choosing it unless no other option remains that causes less harm, but, well--
She’s got a very short list of people who deserved a black eye, and Izana Wisteria sorely tempts her to put his name on it. “What do you mean by that?”
The Marshall is all tense lines behind the battlement of his desk, a buttress against the fall. “Aren’t you a part of K-Science?”
The only distinction that mattered in the dome was between combatants and non; that a licensed therapist fell more into the ‘administration’ box rather than ‘research scientist’ was the least of their concerns. At least as far as the placement of her office. “Tangentially.”
“Well then.” His tension washes away like debris after the storm. “It’s all in the numbers.”
Shirayuki has been trained extensively in conflict resolution, in effective communication, in managerial manipulation, and still, still-- annoyance dogs her every step, nipping at her heels as she loses herself in the dome’s labyrinth of corridors. For once it would be nice to leave the Marshal’s office with something more like a sense of purpose and less like a reprieve in shoving boulders up a muddy hill in Tartarus, but this far into her tenure with the PPDC, she knows better than to hope for impossible asks. It’s not a new feeling by any means-- there’s certainly a hole worn in her heart for just this sort of fruitless anger and a monkey on her back with Izana Wisteria’s face, but he’s certainly devised an entirely new way to get her hackles up today.
Long limbs insinuate themself next to hers, a white-clad arm weaving its way around her elbow. She looks up-- not far-- into a pearl white, movie star grin.
“Well, well,” Yuzuri lilts, halfway between a drawl and singsong. “Someone’s looking stormy.”
Shirayuki doesn’t know how tall a person has to be to be considered thunderous, but if the crinkle to Yuzuri’s eyes are any indication, she’s well below the mark. “I was meeting with the Marshal.”
Yuzuri swings a single, impressed note. “Yeah, that’d do it. Or, I’d imagine it would. Not like he asks to see many of us in K-Science.”
Funny, she doesn’t say, since he’s so comfortable quoting your data. “You should probably count yourself lucky on that one.”
“Oh, yeah.” Yuzuri waves a hand, bangles jangling down her wrist. “Garrack handles him. Honestly, I think she enjoys the aggravation.”
Knowing Garrack like she does, Shirayuki certainly wouldn’t discount it.
Slender fingers flick out a sharp snap. “Hey, maybe you can send her the next time you need to deal with His Majesty. I’m sure she’d kill for a distraction just about now.”
“Oh, no! I’m-- I don’t need any help, it’s just...” She frowns, rifling through the satchel slung over her shoulder. She hardly has anything in it-- lip balm, her notes, a pack of tissues, her civilian identification, her wallet-- but still, her keys are shifted underneath the whole of her life, jingling just out of her reach.
It’s a metaphor, probably, but her love affair with literature is at too much of a standstill these days for her to bother unpacking it. Not when it’s probably going to end in her storming back into the Marshal’s office and demanding he show her some form of respect if he expects her to do her job.
Yuzuri’s mouth curls into a sly smile. “He’s top brass that’s used to having full grown adults ask how high rather than why?”
“That’s part of it,” she admits begrudgingly. “But it would also be nice if he could say what he means, instead of--youch!”
Metal teeth digging painfully into her palm, but she holds on anyway, dragging the ring right out, hair ties and all.
“Instead of...?” Yuzuri prompts, far too amused.
She heaves a sigh, plucking rubber bands off her hand. “Making it all some sort of...logic block word puzzle.”
Blonde brows slant skeptically. “I thought you loved those things.”
“For fun. Not for...” She waves a hand, keys jingling and brightly as Yuzuri’s bangles. “...Professional conversations. I’m not here for his entertainment. I don’t have time for-- for games!”
“Not when you could be doing your actual job.”
“Right.” Her actual job, which has almost exclusively been managing Zen’s feelings regarding Izana for months now. “And now he wants me to...“
She hesitates, teeth sinking into her lip. Outside the dome, patient confidentiality is the backbone of her profession, but here, when everyone eats and breathes and lives on top of one another--
“Lemme guess,” Yuzuri drawls, “get that boy in a pilot seat?”
-- it’s impossible. “I just wish he would show some faith.”
“In you?”
“No.” That’s asking far too much from a man who has only ever trusted as far as the drift could take him. She heaves a sigh, flyaways fluttering in her peripherals. “In Zen.”
A laugh huffs out of Yuzuri. “That’s asking a bit much from an older brother, don’t you think?”
Shirayuki has never, strictly, had a sibling. Ryuu certainly straddles the line between friend, colleague, and family, but she’s never doubted his drive, or the rigorous course of his research. He wouldn’t be her first choice to stand in front of the PPDC committee and defend her findings, but in a pinch, she would trust him wholeheartedly, with no reservations, to do the job.
That does not seem to be the unifying sibling experience. “Is it?”
Yuzuri grins. “You are definitely an only child.”
She restrains her scowl to a disapproving frown. “Maybe, in this case, that’s a good thing.”
They turn down a corridor, and relief floods into her-- this is it, the hall that holds her office at the end. She takes a step forward, but Yuzuri holds her back, gaze fixed leagues away.
“Do you really think he’ll do it?” She blinks, eyes finally focusing down on Shirayuki. “You really think he’ll get back in that jeager?”
“Yes.”
Yuzuri recoils, blinking. “Wow, no hesitation on that one, huh?”
“None,” she agrees, a smile lingering at the edge of her lips. “I know Zen might be hurting right now after--” the most disastrous drift she’s witnessed in her entire career-- “everything, but he...”
She takes in a breath, putting her back to her door. “No matter what happens, Zen always does the right thing.” It’d been that unwavering moral compass that had drawn her to him, a shining bright light among the downtrodden heart of the dome. “He may need a little time to pick himself back up, dust himself back off, but he knows that one day, he’ll have to sit down and talk this out, not run--”
“But not today, it looks like.” Yuzuri’s hand darts right over her shoulder, plucking something off her door.
Shirayuki blinks, letting the yellowed square of paper come into focus.
Something came up. Rain check ~Z
She stares, fingers numb as she swipes the scrap out of Yuzuri’s hands.
“That sunovabitch,” she grits out, paper dinting beneath her grip. “He’s avoiding me.”
“So.” Yuzuri cocks her head, mouth stretching wide. “Wanna grab some grub?”
“I’m just saying.” Suzu’s hand scribbles across a napkin, dropping symbols more arcane than any rift. “If I could just get any of the brass to take a good look at this, things would be different.”
“Different how?” Kazaha drawls, accusation dripping from every word. At least, that’s how it sounds-- it hadn’t taken Shirayuki long to realize that’s just how the man speaks, every phoneme meant to cut glass. The asshole accent, Yuzuri calls it. “Does this somehow improve the quality of life in the dome? The world? The--?”
“It’ll certainly improve my quality of life if I don’t have to hear about it,” Yuzuri deadpans. “C’mon, we’re eating dinner. Let’s put the toys away.”
“It’s not a toy, it’s a tool,” Suzu grumbles, finishing it with a flourish. “And if we used it, we’d know when the kaiju would show up, instead of just waiting for them to wade into the Sea of China or whatever.”
That, at least, gets the team to bow their heads over it, passing around frowns and furrows alike.
“If that was the case,” Kazaha sniffs, pushing it away. “Garrack Gazelt would have already put this in front of the Marshal.”
Suzu scowls, yanking it back. “You know that none of those jarheads appreciate good science! Until I get this paired up with some pretty little graphs, I might as well be speaking Japanese.”
Izuru perks up at that. “Doesn’t the Marshal speak Japanese?”
“That’s besides the point.”
“Hm.” Ryuu squirms next to her, craning his head over the napkin. “I think you’re missing a variable.”
“Impossible.” Suzu stares down at it. “Just look here--”
Shirayuki glances down, letters and numbers do-si-doing between roots and over fractions. Izana might shove her office all the way down in K-Science, but that certainly didn’t give her the training to decipher this little bit of mathematical prognostication.
Suzu pitches forward, felt-tip pen rolling across his knuckles in a bit of sleight-of-hand she would have never thought him capable of. “--you’ll see that by putting ‘a’ over ‘n’ squared--”
“All right.” Yuzuri’s fingers knit in the cotton of his button-down, dragging him back down onto the bench with a thump. “I think we’ve had quite enough of that.”
With a lift of his brows, Suzu’s face shifts from fox to puppy in eight muscles flat. “But, Yuzuri--”
“No buts.” Her fingers pluck the pen out of his, dropping it back into a pocket with a firm, warning pat. “Now, as I was trying to say: His Highness is avoiding you.”
Shirayuki blinks, gaze dragging up to where Yuzuri waits with an impatient smirk. “N-no! That’s not it at all. Something probably came up--”
“Izana’s avoiding you?” Suzu swings a wide, gaping stare at her. “Didn’t you just have a meeting today? What did you do to him?”
Her hands fly up, waving off the accusation. “Ah, no, I didn’t--”
“No, not His Majesty, His Highness,” Yuzuri corrects, blowing on a spoonful of the mess’s finest chicken noodle. “And he is avoiding you, which is bullshit.”
She has to bite her cheeks to keep her lips from peeling back into a grimace. “Zen has lots of work to keep him busy--”
“What work?” Kazaha scoffs, meticulously cutting his chicken into bite-sized pieces. “He’s a ranger without a co-pilot. It’s not like he can just jump into a jaeger and fight kaiju with half a working mecha.”
Yuzuri swivels toward him, hands held out with a level of emphasis Shirayuki can’t help but feel is more than the situation truly deserves. Especially since some of the rangers are starting to peer over their way. “See, even Kazaha knows it’s bullshit.”
His mouth purses into a tight frown. “I don’t know why it’s even Kazaha--”
Yuzuri’s brows make a dubious stretch toward her hairline. “I’m pretty sure you do.”
“--I’m very socially astute, even Shidan--”
“--just because he lets you out of the lab doesn’t mean you don’t offend people by breathing--”
“I dunno.” Suzu’s forehead furrows, tapping a spoon on each of his oyster crackers, drowning them in broth. “Zen seems like a real upright guy, you know? Forthright. If he had a problem, he’d say something, not just ghost you.”
Yuzuri stares at him. “He buys you one bubble tea, and now he can do no wrong.”
“Do you know how hard those are to get out here? He had to go all the way out to--”
Whatever else Suzu means to say, it’s lost in the siren.
This isn’t Shirayuki’s first time in the dome-- far from it-- but it’s never easy.
The siren’s moan shivers through the air, something she feels rather than hears. Her teeth rattle in her mouth, and there’s nothing she wants to do more than curl up beneath the table and ride it out, eyes squeezed shut and hands over her ears. She wouldn’t be the only one; already half of K-Science is on the ground, tears streaming down more than one ashen face.
Man’s worst enemy is fear. Grandpa had told her that, letting her dip her toes into the bay. She’d been small, young enough that she still wondered if kaiju might lurk under the surface, waiting to pull tasty little girls beneath the depths. Kaiju can only kill you once, but fear kills a hundred times. His hand sits heavy on her shoulder, a comfort, a cage; and she--
She gets up.
Pilots and personnel scramble; one tech stands up too fast, boot hooking on the bench’s edge and sprawling face-first into the floor. It’s only ranger reflexes that keep her from getting trampled, dodging around the splay of her fingers with a dexterity that would make Shirayuki’s jaw drop if she wasn’t trying to keep all her molars from jittering out of their sockets.
There’s a hand on her shoulder. She hadn’t just imagined it, a goad to get her standing. She traces the hand back, up ranger fatigues to dark hair, brows raised, and beneath them--
It’s violet eyes, not gold. Not Obi, but a ranger she’s never seen before, his mouth quirked with cold consideration.
“It would be safer,” he says, voice somehow Altantic-crisp over the cacophony, “if you stayed in your seat.”
Her mouth opens, working around the sounds to thank him, but he’s already gone, disappeared into the crowd of PPDC personnel around her. Shirayuki’s eyes shift over the mob, trying to-- to find him, maybe, or at least a face she knew, someone that she could talk to, someone to memorize one last time--
She finds one, silver-blond hair shimmering at the door, too pale to be anyone else. Zen. It’s Zen looking right at her, those deep blue eyes inscrutable, mouth carved into a line more grim than he’s ever shown her.
He turns away.
“It’s too soon, though,” Suzu murmurs, staring down at his napkin. The screens are on now, muted by the siren’s wails, and there’s a Kaiju on it, frill rigid around its reptilian face as it tears a city to twisted metal ribbons. It’s just buildings, streets, impossible to tell which one, but all that matters right now is not here.
“As I said,” Ryuu says, only just audible over the drone. “You dropped a variable.”
What hurts most, once her teeth stop rattling and her heart ceases to pound in her chest, is that Yuzuri is right-- Zen is avoiding her.
“The sessions are his choice.” Labeling tubes isn’t quite how Shirayuki had envisioned her evening going, especially with her mind half-away, pondering over the Pacific, but it’s something to do. “No one can force him to come.”
“Sounds like that’s half the problem,” Garrack mutters, forehead pressed to the hood, leaving a faint, oily smear across the glass. “Free will. Foils gods and men alike, doesn’t it?”
Her mouth pulls down at the corners, a bow stretched too tight, just like her patience. “I don’t want him to be forced. Therapy only works if the patient wants to change.”
Which, by Zen’s conspicuous absence, tells her he doesn’t. He’s happy as he is, wearing the fatigues but never getting in the cockpit, waiting for a copilot that’s already shown how little he cares about anything but lining his own pocket.
“Of course. You can lead a horse to water, but you’ll never make it drink.” It’s impressive to watch Garrack work; even in rubber sleeves, her grip never trembles, never slips. In the same position, Shirayuki can barely close a fist, but Garrack’s got the same dexterity in the hood as she does out of it. “Good thing you get paid regardless.”
Shirayuki flushes, heat pricking at her pride. “I’m not worried about that.”
“No, I wouldn’t think you are,” Garrack murmurs. “I’m just saying it’s nice. Salaried, with room and board to boot.”
Her frown falls further, flirting with a glower. “I’m aware that I’m in the unique position of not having to care in an official capacity if he bothers to come back. But personally--” her breath catches, stomach doing one, solid somersault-- “I do. I want him to want this.”
Garrack hums, not an agreement or judgement, but an acknowledgement. Tactic permission to proceed.
“Izana wants me to tells him to climb into a jeager, to use my-- our personal connection to manipulate him into the cockpit, regardless of what his personal feelings are.” Her breath rushes from her lungs, suddenly ragged, frayed at either end. “No, encourage. That’s what he told me. That it’s my job to do it for humanity.”
One thick eyebrow arches under Garrack’s cap, her eyes bright with interest. “And how do you feel about that?”
It’s strange being on the other side of this question, to be the analyzed instead of the analyzer. She squirms, teeth worrying at her lip, mind racing with possibilities.
“C’mon now,” Garrack chides, mouth hooking into a smirk. She picks up her rack, rattling the small tubes in their holes. “I gave you those for a reason. Idle hands are the devil’s playground, you know-- at least, that’s what people say when they’re afraid of what you’ll get up to if you start thinking.”
She tosses her a wink, ejecting the tip of her pipette into the trash before fitting on another. “Too bad they don’t know that drudgery clears your mind. Have all my best ideas when I’ve got a sharpie and a hundred two-mils to get through. So come on--” she grins, all conspiracy-- “tell me. What do you think of our illustrious leader’s idea?”
Her teeth click shut around her first opinion-- saying Izana Wisteria should go suck eggs would not only please Garrack far too much, but would be around the rest of the base by morning. The last thing she needs is the Marshal inviting her into his office and reading that off one of his hundreds of emails. “...Think that’s beyond my professional scope to comment on.”
“Oh please.” Garrack waves her off, one rubber arm flailing behind the glass. “I’m not asking you to issue a formal complaint about the marshal’s policies. I want to know if you think that kid should get in that steel coffin and kick the closest kaiju in whatever passes for their balls. If throwing another body at the breach is what’s best for humanity.”
“I...”
It shouldn’t be. There’s more rangers on this base than jaegers to fit them; one career pilot pulling back to fill the ranks shouldn’t be more than a drop in the bucket, a chair to fill. But this is no ordinary jaeger-- this is Rex Tyrannous, the most advanced piece of machinery to roll out of a PPDC facility before or since. Rebuilt from the same blueprint as the Mark I, reconfigured with the best technology the Mark III could offer, the Mark IV’s older, more deadly brother, and--
And the money for it hadn’t come out of Defense Corps coffers. No matter how many hopefuls washed up at the dome, the King of Kaijus wouldn’t come out of its box for anyone less than a Wisteria, not as long as at least one was still standing.
“Yes.” She spits the word out like poison, but still she feels unclean. “There’s no one else that can do what he needs to.”
Garrack’s mouth twists in a wry curve. “Then there you go.”
“It’s a conflict of interest!” Shirayuki insists, the sharpie in her hand shaking as she tries to form a 4. “If there was anyone on this base that had the credentials, I’d-- I’d put in the referral myself. He deserves someone that’s impartial--”
“Shirayuki.” With exaggerated care, Garrack pulls her arms from the hood, letting her hands fall down to her lap. “Do you think there is a single soul in this dome who could do the math you did and not be partial?”
Her mouth works, opening once, twice, before settling shut with a snick.
“I didn’t hire you because you lacked bias.” Garrack’s voice pitches low, softer than she’s ever heard her, knuckles white where they clasp her knees . “You wrote a paper about PTSD in rangers that lost a partner in the drift. A paper, might I add, that showed a great deal of knowledge in jaeger production and use. The sort of thing no one learns unless they’ve been locked up under a dome for years before being released in the wild.”
It’s not an accusation, not yet, but Shirayuki’s hands still anyway, clammy beneath latex.
“Because of that useless wall, we’re years behind in jaeger production.  We need new mechs, and Rex Tyrannous is the best model we got left, whether it’s been sitting in its box for half a decade or not. ” She settles back, brow arched. “But I don’t need to tell you that, now do I?”
No. Her fingers clench hard around the sharpie. She doesn’t.
“Shirayuki, I know you’re a good kid, but you do get to be selfish sometimes.” Garrack grins, too pleased at the prospect. “You’re human, just like the rest of us. There’s no one who doesn’t have skin in this game.”
“I know,” she murmurs. “But it’s my job to do what’s best for him as my patient, not just--”
Garrack snorts. “Oh, is the discontinuation of the human race not going to affect him?”
Shirayuki frowns, opening her mouth to-- well, to say something quelling, no doubt. But-- “Oh.”
Garrack hunches over her lap, forearms braced on her thighs. “I know the Wisterias put on a good show of being gods, but they’re flesh and blood like the rest of us. It doesn’t do anyone good for them to sit out the apocalypse. Not even themselves.”
“But, I...” She sets the tubes down, gloves crinkling into fists. “I don’t know what happened in the drift, just what the readouts said. It could have been a failure on Obi’s side just as much as his, and if they’re not compatible--”
“Then just ask him,” Garrack sighs, swiveling back toward the hood. “You don’t need to try to read minds.”
“But he’s not talking--”
“Not that Wisteria prick.” She chucks her chin toward the door, toward the vague direction of the dome beyond. “The other one. Seems like the real problem there might be getting him to stop talking.”
“Obi?” She blinks. He’s friendly, sure, but she wouldn’t say he’s been one to volunteer information.
“If that’s the one that’s down here every other day, talking my ears off with Suzu, then yes.” One rubber arm flails at her through the glass. “Now get out of here, and get those two little shits inside their tuna can before a Cat 5 can make it down the coast and make us regret it.”
When she steps into the hall, Shirayuki has every intention of following Garrack’s advice. It’s solid, after all; in a two-sided problem where one solution makes itself unavailable, the obvious answer is the best approach-- especially when in this labyrinth of a dome, there’s only so many places where he can hide.
She stops by the mess for a peace offering. Obi might be disposed to be friendly toward her at the moment, but she knows all too well how far good will will get her if she’s going to start rummaging around in things he’d rather keep cooped up behind that smile. Quality coffee and some contraband cookies might not mend the bridges she burns, but it’ll at least keep them standing while she’s walking over it.
It’s a good plan, a solid plan; she just doesn’t anticipate the company.
“Shirayuki.” Dark circles ring dark eyes, but Mitsuhide smiles just as warm as he always does, sprawled stiffly on the bench. “It’s good to see you.”
“I should be saying the same thing!” she gasps, her and her tea sliding in across from him at the formica table. “I thought you’d be out...” in your tuna can.
She bites her cheek, just hard enough to keep the words from spilling out. Sometimes she really, truly wishes she didn’t listen to Garrack quite as much; her mouth and Garrack’s words made a volatile mix. The sort that would get her a dishonorable discharge, if she weren’t a civilian-- or careful.
“We were. I mean, I was. Both Kiki and myself.” His body twists with a good, solid shake, eyes clearing. “Sorry, just had to exorcise the ghost. You know how it is.”
She doesn’t, but she does. There’s papers on the subject; reams of them-- Longevity of neural imprints in active rangers had been a favorite when she’d been in undergrad, as well as the far more entertaining, Ghost Drifting: How does one leave a ghost while still alive? It’s still novel to witness it, to see that spectral presence cling to the neural stem so long after--
“We just got back a little while ago.” He shifts, his right leg stretching long across the floor, knee bucking stiffly. “Kiki hit the rack, but I needed to, ah, take a walk.”
That’s his-- his good leg, as Kiki likes to call it, the half of him that becomes Redwood Dancer to pair with her left. That’s what makes them first line defense, even in an older Mark III; Kiki’s a real lefty, not one made by the drift. When Dancer throws a punch, both sides come full powered.
That’s what you get being the best of the best, Zen would say, envy and wistfulness thickening his voice, everyone knows they can count on you to serve.
That seems less like a good thing as Shirayuki sits across from it, watching the shadows shift in Mitsuhide’s eyes.
“Did you see it?” she asks, voice a whisper in the cavernous lair of the mess. “The kaiju?”
Mitsuhide grunts, shaking his head. “No, we were kept on standby. Got there after some of the boys in Hong Kong did, and they handled it.”
He doesn’t offer how well; she doesn’t ask.
“Ah,” she hums instead, hunching over her mug. “So it was out that way?”
“When they get that far down, yeah.” One of his large fingers wraps around the handle of his mug, bringing it to his mouth for a long, steady drag. “Not many wander out this way.”
“Alaska--”
“Yeah, there’s a few up north, and I think Seattle always has a good sweat when that happens, but...” His brows furrow, just a small wrinkle in the center of his forehead. “Not so much down here. Not anymore.”
Her palms press against warm ceramic, lips curling into a thin smile. “I guess we don’t have what they want. Whatever that is.”
His mouth gives a wryly twitch. “Thank God for small blessings.”
It would be nice to let the silence between them mellow, to allow herself a companionable respite after swallowing around her heart for half a day, but--
But there are things that won’t keep, no matter how much she’d like to set them aside, set them down even for just a moment. “Mitsuhide...”
He stiffens, the way a dog does when it hears its name shouted in the key of trouble. There’s two ways to respond to conflict, they used to say, fight or flight; years later they added freeze with as begrudging a reception as any change to common wisdom was given. But Mitsuhide does none of those; he just hunkers, eyes warm and dark and wary when they meet hers, hedged by hunched shoulders. The sort of man who grew up in a place where natural disasters are weathered in bathtubs and basements, or else watched from afar on front porches.
“I meant to talk to you.” Her fingers knit into the natural ridges of her mug; the only way to keep them from trembling. “After...after. I mean, not this, but before. The, um...”
It’s ridiculous how many calamities can cluster in a few hours. She’ll need to start numbering them to keep them all straight.
“The drift,” he rasps wearily. “Zen's talked about it with you, hasn’t he?”
Her mouth works; her duty to her profession says to keep it shut, to keep her patient’s business confidential, but her duty as a member of the human race, of a species that is growing more endangered by the year-- “He skipped his session.”
Shirayuki couldn’t have moved him if she hit him, but this rocks him back in his seat. “I’d been hoping...” He shakes his head, mouth curling into a rueful smile. “I thought I’d be the one trying to work something out of you.”
“Ah.” She bows her head, watching the leaves swirl in her tea. “So you haven’t had any luck either?”
Her shakes his head, disappointment stark in every sway. “He won’t talk about it. After he got out of the hanger he went and locked himself in his rack. He only agreed to come to the mess if we promised to drop the whole thing.”
Shirayuki winces. “I’d normally never ask, but when he didn’t show up to our usual appointment...”
Mitsuhide lets out a noise somewhere between a laugh and a sigh. “I don’t know why he’d do that. I’d give some of my teeth to let someone else listen to my head sometimes.”
She blinks. “You’re always welcome, if you wanted to.”
“No.” His mouth rucks up in a rueful curve. “I really couldn’t.”
“But--”
“The thing they don’t tell you before you get into that cockpit is--” he takes a deep breath, the air emptying out the tension in his shoulders-- “is that the second you hit the drift, all your secrets aren’t your own anymore.”
“Oh.” The drift is two minds laid bare to one another, the deepest form of trust, but in all her studies, she’d never thought what that meant. How tangled and deep a mind could become in things that weren’t theirs to know, weren’t their secrets to carry. “Can I ask you something?”
His eyebrows ruffle up an inch, curious. “Of course. Anything I can answer.”
“When you first came to the dome, you were...” Shirayuki bites her lips, considering. “You were Zen’s copilot. But then Kiki came...”
The PPDC might be the one that’s stamped on the letterhead, but the Wisterias are the spine of the jeager project as well as its face. Their neural net stretches far and wide through the Corp’s hierarchies, fingers in every pie, and although Zen might not be in the upper echelons of leadership, the sort of state secrets someone might glean from the casual details rattling around in his head...
Well, it’s a good thing the Seirans were just as entrenched.
“Why did you do it?” she asks finally, though it’s miles away from what she means. “Why change when you already...?”
“Ah, well...” Mitsuhide’s shoulders heave awkwardly. “It was an emergency, at first, and then...I don’t know how to explain it. We just fit. Not that I didn’t with Zen, but this was...”
He hesitates, smile edging towards a kind of self-deprecation that doesn’t quite fit him. “It was different. If that makes sense.”
“It doesn’t,” she admits. Not to her, at least, someone who has never been in a cockpit, who has never drifted over a set of pons and tried to make a connection. But to someone who has, who has spent the last half decade rotating through a list of hopefuls and throwing them all in the trash-- “But I think...maybe it could.”
Shirayuki would love to say that she’s experienced a perception shift, that a few words with Mitsuhide gave her a clarity that she needs to pore over before acting on, but the fact of it is-- she’s too anxious to approach Obi, pure and simple.
Not that he’s given her much cause; he’s scarce after that failure of a drift, but his absence lacks the marked purpose of Zen’s. It’s hard to find anyone after an attack; everyone’s on high alert, hypervigilant, waiting for another call to come like an aftershock. It’s never happened before, but to assume that means a double event is out of the question--
Well, humanity stopped making assumptions about what lurked beneath the Pacific the day Trespasser ripped the Golden Gate off its moorings.
She catches a glimpse of him every once and a while, always going the wrong way but with a smile to share before he disappears. He’s not avoiding her, he’s avoiding everyone else, and she’s just too much of a cog in the dome’s machinery to not be a casualty of it. It’s nothing personal, she’s sure, but with all the people giving her a wide berth lately, it’s hard not to feel that his absence is pointed.
Still, there are things that just won’t keep. She can’t just keep avoiding this because she’s afraid of one more rejection.
And that’s how she finds herself in the middle of the dome’s combat room, on the business end of Obi’s smirk.
“Doc,” he hums, kicking the end of his staff up to yoke his neck. He makes it look easy, like the jo is an extension of him rather than a separate piece. She can’t help but think of what he might do with a hundred tons of jeager strapped to him, how easy he might make it move. “Funny seeing you here.”
She nods, rocking on her toes. “It’s been a while.”
He swaggers toward her, stopping barely an arm’s length away, hip cocked. Sweat dews along every inch of him, his tank damp and clinging to the hard planes of his stomach, tighter than the lycra in her own gear. His pants swing low, leaving a sliver of skin between it and his shirt, and she--
She should really be looking elsewhere. He’s not a giant, not like Mitsuhide, but when she looks up, it’s a long way to meet his eyes. They’re laughing at her when she does.
“You’re not gonna get anything out of me, you know,” he says as if he’d like to see her try; a challenge rather than a defense. “What happens in the drift stays in the drift.”
Her mouth works; this time stuck less on the sweat crawling over his skin and more on how quickly she’s been made. “I didn’t say I was going to.”
“You had the look.” He shifts, hips drawing her gaze with them. When she glances back up, he seems to find that funny too. “Besides, why else would you come in here? Most shrinks I meet aren’t, hm, combat ready.”
“I-I work out!”
His eyebrows raise, mouth following suit. “That so?”
She flexes arm, baring what, in her humble opinion, is no small bicep. Kiki might have her beat, but in K-science terms she’s practically buff. “See?”
Obi slinks close, hunching over, jo and all, to give her offering a good squint. With a hum she’d like to think is at least mildly impressed, he straightens, suddenly so close she can smell the sweat on him and the faint whiff of his deodorant.
“Well then, I stand corrected.” His smile stretches Cheshire-wide as he steps aside, sweeping out a hand. “Don’t let me stop you.”
Shirayuki peers past him, fighting to keep the grimace from her face. She works out, sure, but more along the lines of slow and low. Yoga. Tai chi. Pilates. Things that promote mind and body balance. But even in the gym, all the equipment is meant for bulking muscle, for building the sort of bodies that can bear up a skyscraper. And the combat room...
Well the only equipment here is the jo in their rack and the tatami on the floor. This isn’t for people looking to do a pull up, it’s for rangers looking to spar.
“Tell you what, Doc,” Obi says, no small amount of amusement or pity in his voice. “I could use a cool down.”
His jo whips down from his shoulders, lightning fast, hands thrusting out in the air, and she--
Her hand rises to match, catching the jo mid-air. She sags under it, a little heavier than she expected from a stick that size, but keeps her feet under her. She glances back at Obi, wide-eyed, but he just lifts his brows, impressed. “How about we go a round, you and me?”
It’s a normal request-- maybe not to her, but the rangers certainly aren’t shy about taking conversations to the tatami. But Obi’s voice does something with it, pushes it down into a register that feels more mattress than mat, and she shivers as she lets the jo drop more naturally into her grip. “Me?”
“Well, I really thought you wouldn’t catch it.” His chin juts toward her staff. “But it looks like you at least know how to hold it.”
Her finger flex around the wood, settling against its smooth surface. “I’ve done it once or twice.”
A half dozen years ago, but he doesn’t need to know that.
His mouth twitches. “Great.”
Obi’s not a mountain of a man, not like Mitsuhide, but when he falls into stance, he could make himself one. It would take an earthquake to move him, and she has the world’s smallest lever. “Come at me.”
Shirayuki shuffles awkwardly on the mat, twisting the jo to rest on both her hands. It feels like she’s got two left ones holding it-- neither one of them are as good as Kiki’s-- but muscle serves her better than memory. Center yourself, Grampa told her, yanking her chest above her hips, feel the earth come to meet you. You’ll be part of it one day, and it’s ready.
Morbid, but it works. Her spine jolts into a straight line, weight teetering between her feet, and she takes her swing.
Obi doesn’t try to dodge. He could-- even in that split second, his muscles twitch, goading him to flee-- but he just raises his staff, a jolt she feels right down to her shoulders. The puny clack echoes in her ears. It’s nothing even close to how him and Zen were sparring.
“Go ahead.” He shifts his weight as she recovers, bracing himself. “Again.”
Right. Her feet flatten against the mat-- or at least they try to, pressing instead against the foam of her sneakers. Her sneakers that she’s still wearing, since she came in here thinking there would be an elliptical, or weights, or not this.
That won’t do at all. She toes them off, setting them at the edge of the tatami, the only spectators to her impending humiliation.
She hesitates, fingers peeling socks over her heels. Obi’s already said she won’t get any information out of him; she doesn’t need to do this. She could walk away right now, and the only consequence would be his teasing. And yet--
And yet, Shirayuki walks back, feet grounding against the weave beneath them. The jo settles between her hands. Obi grins.
When she moves again, it’s with more confidence, memory fueling her strike. He catches it again, but this time it doesn’t rattle her. At least, not until he moves too, viper fast, and then she’s scrambling again. She’s no noodle-armed K-science geek, no matter what Obi might say, but when she thrusts her staff up overhead to meet his swing, her arms tremble, teeth jangling in her mouth.
Obi retreats, amusement clinging to his lips, and she huffs. Maybe she can’t take the same sort of beating Kiki can, but she isn’t about to be some pushover.
She comes at him again, lower this time, on the outside. He’s not prepared-- she can tell the way his eyes widen-- but reflexes smooth his response, drawing her back with a few of his own strikes, and then--
Then it’s just trading blows. Not like his spar with Zen; he’s too skilled and she’s too inexperienced for this to be anything but a planned draw, for him to do anything but go easy on her. But still, still-- there’s a strange electricity every time they meet, more than just their jo rising to meet each other, an anticipation--
Obi steps back, brow furrowed. “Hm.”
Shirayuki’s panting, drenched, and he’s barely broken a sweat. “Is something wrong?”
It certainly doesn’t feel wrong to her.
“N-no.” He plucks her jo from her grip, the swagger gone from his hips as he mounts it on the wall beside his. “Just. Interesting.”
“Interesting?” she prompts hopefully.
Obi shrugs, like there’s an itch between his shoulders. “Did you need anything else, Doc?”
“I...” She bites down on the impulse to ask, to demand to know if he felt it too. “No. I should, um. Get going.”
“Nowhere to go but people to see, huh?” he laughs, but it’s weaker than his usual, stilted.
“Yeah,” she breathes, turning away. “Something like that.”
We just fit, Mitsuhide said with that strange look on his face, a yearning she knows now. If that makes sense.
“Obi?” Even to her own ears, her voice sounds distant, like it’s coming from another mouth, not her own. Maybe it’s just because she’s bent in half, working cotton over sweaty toes. Maybe it’s because it feels like she’s only working with half a body.
His head swivels, chin peeking over his shoulder. “Yeah, Doc?”
“It wasn’t you, was it?” He blinks, head tilting with confusion, and she clarifies, “It wasn’t your failure.”
His breath tumbles from his like wind over water; she swears she can feel the ripples of it even where she stands. “No,” he says, so soft it’s nearly lost over the rattle of the vents. “Not yet.”
The static fizzles on her skin, belly rocking as she bends to slip on her sneakers, and oh, Mitsuhide’s words might not have made sense before, but--
But she’s worried they’re starting to now.

I thought 'prescheduled volding' was an euphemism for sex until I realized it was your queue tag lmaoo
anyway, onto my question: any tips for studying, Tom? you obviously know something about it, since you got great marks on your OWLs and NEWTs :))
I admit, for me, it depends upon the subject in question. Some subjects are fascinating in their own right - I can study these for hours and be unaware time has even passed. Other subjects are more tedious.
Sometimes - especially now - I prefer to study alone, as I can find others distracting. I find discipline to be essential, so I study something I find uninteresting for half an hour before I move on to what genuinely interests me.
I have noticed that many of my peers would merely highlight or underline sections of text - and this can be helpful, but you must take care to not merely underline everything. Place a star, or another symbol, beside key points. And take notes in the text. This engagement helps you retain things longer. Even a simple “I am not sure here,” or a “but what about xyz?” can help. And then, you may start to notice patterns in your thinking - are your questions being answered in the following paragraphs? Excellent - you are an insightful reader. Are there certain concepts you continue to react to with confusion? Excellent - you know what to follow up on and research. Notes provide a pathway mere underlining does not. Oftentimes, now, I find myself providing a running commentary in the margins.
If you do study with others, as many people do, take care to surround yourself with friends who are like minded, and will actually help you study. Good companionship can indeed make things go by much faster - ah, I do fondly recall the many nights in the library or the common room with my schoolmates, the scratch of parchment on paper, the flipping of pages, the odd thunk as Yaxley hit Avery on the head with a charms textbook.
Essays are a topic worth mentioning. As a prefect, I had many younger students whining to me all the time about how they cannot craft an essay of just a few inches. And as a prefect, I was duty bound to assist them. I will tell you what I told them, I suppose. When assigned essays, you must identify the following three points: what I am trying to say, why I must say it, and how I will back it up.
Any essay can be broken down into these three questions. I find many people struggle with the “why” - they know the topic or argument, and they know they need to use their textbooks and research as evidence, but they get lost in the weeds of why the damn thing is important in the first place.
A common first year essay is the use of fresh vs dried herbs in potions. If I have one more first year come to me about that bloody herb essay- ahem. They know they need to cover the uses for both. That is the what. They know they must go to the library and look up the differences between the two, in terms of effects on potions. That is the how. They never seem to think about the why. They seem to simply copy the dry definitions for the original texts, coming quite close to plagiarism or a list in paragraph form. Nothing they show me ever sounds engaging. I must ask them, time and time again; why are they even writing about this? Well, for a grade, of course, but also to put theory into context. Who is this for? You need to compare the two, give examples of their use, and why, and how things could go very wrong if you used dried nettles instead of fresh, for example. Pick a potion, explain what it is supposed to do, and then talk about the reasons why using the other type of herb fails to preform. For the love of Merlin, be creative.
Note I never addressed mechanics. This is because grammar, spelling, vocabulary - that can all be fixed with time as one advances in academics. The more one reads and writes, the better one gets at those things quite naturally - barring certain barriers such as dyslexia, but with proper study habits, an understanding tutor, and a spell-check quill (NOT from Weasley’s wizard wheezes, mind you, a proper one) the same logic still applies. (Or you could quite possibly pay a keen-eyed, entrepreneurial fourth year in chocolate frogs to proofread your papers. Slytherin house is full of these opportunities, and I do not judge.) Content, however, is fundamental, and must be consciously worked on from the beginning.
I do hope this helps.

Lunatic Parade Reiji Sakamaki– (Chapter 02)
For @diafan4eversakakmaki and others who requested. ♡
Tumblr media
Main CG used in this route -
Tumblr media
Place: Rubean Canal /
Tumblr media
Reiji: Fu~ I have heard that the cafe along the coasts of canals are popular but...it seemed like those rumors are true.
Yui: Fufu~ Even though it is an open beach but it was really delicious.
Reiji: Yeah, The seasoning of the soup was also perfect. Anyway, talking about today’s plan....at first, let’s search the butler of that castle.
This morning, I realized that the familiars disappeared who used to fly around the castle.
Yui: Huh? Well then where...
Reiji: Similarly, familiars were also flying around the street but, apparently they are also visiting all the shops everyday.
Let’s go around the conspicuous shops and find out the Butler that we are searching for.
The Butler just is pretending and hiding his real identity and he is just having fake conversations with other people there.
Yui: I see.
(As expected of him. I would have put him in trouble if he wouldn’t tell me the whole situation.)
Reiji: Okay then, after finishing our meal, let’s go as soon as possible.
Yui: Yes!
Tumblr media
Yui: (Umm, there is a lot of crowd as usual. I do not think that I will be able to find him.)
Reiji: ......He is here.
Yui: What?
Reiji: Sh! ...That person just turned around. I will follow him.
Yui: (It is te-terrible...)
Tumblr media
Reiji: Hm. I see. Looks like he is arranging tea-cakes.
Yui: Yes, he is.
(Oh. He takes a small bat-shaped bag from the luggage and then, he flies away.)
Reiji: Looks like...he will be continuing shopping for a while because he hasn’t taken the luggage with him.
Yui: That’s true….
Reiji: Let’s talk with him, since it looks like he has a lot of time.
Yui: I got it.
Tumblr media
Reiji: Hm? That Butler is staring at the stalls with such greedy eyes.
Yui: Perhaps, he has stopped by here because he is in the middle of some business …..?
Reiji: Hah! You...which of these you want to eat?
Yui: *Face red* I-I...I am...nothing..
Reiji: You are so bad at telling lies. You just have swallowed for your appetite, do you think that I haven't noticed?
Yui: I am so-sorry. Actually the pretzels were smelling so good…
Reiji: What a pain. It can’t be helped. Which flavour do you like?
Yui: Really? Is it okay?
Reiji: Well, it will be a trouble if I do not agree because the insects in your stomach are being so loud.
Yui: Uuh...I am so sorry.
(It’s embarrassing but I am so glad because it’s Reiji San after all.)
Tumblr media
Reiji: One thing after another….he is such a busy person. It’s hard to follow him like this.
Yui: That’s true...Huh?
Reiji San, Butler San get out from here without looking at any stuff.
Reiji: …..It’s bad. He was able to notice us.
Yui: Really?
Reiji: I have to chase after him as soon as possible. If he gets out of our sight now, we will have to suffer even more than before.
Yes: Ye-yes!
Tumblr media
Yui:  (We were going after him...but looks like he is not anywhere.)
Reiji: Ugh!...Damn it....!
Yui: Certainly, I have seen him entering this shop.
Reiji: There is a possibility….You...come here. Don’t leave my side.
Yui: Of course I won't!
Reiji: Fu~These words of you are very reassuring. I am on my way then!
Yui: (Huh? There….!)
Place: 試着窖 / Dress Trial Room
Tumblr media
Reiji: Show yourself! It’s useless even though you hide because you cannot get away from my eyes.
*Screen shocked/shaked*
Butler: Ugh…! ….aah! You have finally found me huh?
Yui: (No way! He was hiding inside the trial room, and I haven’t noticed.)
Butler: I was doing this because you were following me so diligently. I was so worried that what do you really want from me?
*Reiji is speaking very very formally. Usually, this class of Japanese is used by the president, in the airport or News reporter.*
Reiji: The truth is that, we wanted a favour from you. We want to meet with Earl Walter.
Butler: I guessed that you would ask me this. However, I can’t do that.
Yui: Umn...We want to meet with him but there is a good reason behind this. Can you please listen to us?
Butler: No. Even though there are good reasons behind this, it has nothing to do with my manager. Please accept this fact.
Reiji: Aah! I am so annoyed! I never thought that the assistant of Earl Walter would be such a mad person.
Butler: Say whatever you want. However, my manager’s orders are absolute and it has to be followed.
Reiji: Orders? Actually what kind of orders are they?
Butler: I cannot let anyone enter inside the castle. It is the command.
Reiji: I got it. However, there is some news that I really want Earl Walter to hear.
Tumblr media
The treasure I have…..I want that person to appraise it’s value.
Butler: Appraise?
Reiji: Yeah. I got it from a certain source. You can’t really understand the value of that thing.
Butler: My manager's an expert judge in rating but he finds a little difficulty in volunteering I think.
Reiji: Of course, I am also thinking about the presentation. I hope you will give us a satisfactory value instead of that.
[鑑定 — means appraisal or rating. It’s very difficult to translate for me, but I tried my best to put it as much as I could. Here, by appraisal / rating, Reiji and Butler meant that how will they actually exchange the value or pay the value in exchange of the treasures of each other.]
Butler: I see... …
Yui: (Wonderful... It was like I didn't have the ears to understand this conversation, but I'm gradually engaging myself into the story.)
Butler: I am sorry but I can’t invite you into the castle. In somewhere else….
Reiji: No. I refuse because it will be a trouble for me. My treasure is not something that you can easily publish outside.
Someone has already seen that….
Butler: Someone has seen that…...?
Reiji: …...I cannot tell you more than that.
So, what would you like to do?
Butler: Let’s not raise questions about it. Then, excuse me.
Yui: (Aaa!..Um...I have something that I must have to say.)
Selection—
Tumblr media
Give a hint about the secret of the watch.
Ask about the castle. (+ Correct)
Yui: (How can I get attention….?)
Yui: Umn..On the other day, we saw the castle from the Ferris Wheel. It was so beautiful.
Butler: Thank you so much for saying that.
Yui: That garden of the castle was also pretty. Butler San, do you take care of that garden?
Butler: Yeah! I am very strict to my familiars and give them command and familiarize them, so it’s true.
Yui: Oh, that’s how it is……!
Reiji: As I thought, you are a wonderful owner of the garden. As expected, this is why Earl has left everything up to you.
Yui: (Ah! I was able to join the conversation. I hope I can support Reiji San.)
Reiji: She is also saying this. Of course, we also want to see that garden directly.
Butler: I see. So you want to see that garden. But I can’t decide on my own.
Yui: (Nope. He is a very tough person. But I think the expression of his face is a little softer than before.)
Reiji: If it is so, then, I have a suggestion.
Butler: What is it?
Reiji: It’s fine even if we don’t enter inside the castle. Atleast, let us enter the gate, so that the people will not notice my treasure.
Butler: But….
Reiji: If we miss this opportunity, you too, me too and also Earl will have to be sorry for that.
It’s because I will never come up or offer such a thing in the future after all.
Yui: Me too! I am also requesting you.
Tumblr media
The treasure of Reiji San is really amazing!
Butler: I understand. Okay, I agree.
I will take two of you front of the castle gate. And, from there everything depends on the Earl.
If Earl is interested to talk with you, then I will leave you alone there with Earl.
Yui: Thank you so much!
Reiji: Fufu~ Then, let’s go.
Yui: (I am so glad…! Looks like we are one step closer to success.)
Tumblr media
Yui: (Wow...if I look at the castle closely, it's a very luxurious and gorgeous castle.)
Butler: For now, is it okay if you wait in the front gate?
Reiji: Yes of course. But….
Yui: (Ah! It’s raining…? No it’s not. This is…)
Reiji: The lights are flying taking water inside of it, as a result, the water is swelling while light is flying….it’s very beautiful scenery.
Yui: ( The amount of water discharge is unbelievable. Is it a part of the parade show?)
Butler: Looks like we are in trouble. At this rate, we are going to get wet.
Reiji: Looks like we have to pass the time like this for a while. Look, it’s written in the sign board.
Yui: (Could it be that Reiji San has also researched it…..!)
Butler: You are right. I usually stay inside the castle, so I forgot about it.
We got no other choice. Please come inside.
Reiji: I am apologizing. It will be a great help.
Yui: Tha-Thank you so much…!
(Oh, yes!...We can gradually enter inside the Castle!)
Tumblr media
Yui: (Huh? Nobody is here. I wonder where Earl is.)
Reiji: As expected. Looks like our opponent doesn’t want to show up.
Yui: What?
Reiji: You didn’t realize anything? This strange atmosphere…..
*Earl’s common appearing Music Starts*
???: *Fake coughing* Uhm, Uhm…I am Walter. What the heck do you want, huh?
Reiji: At first I will want to see you. I can’t see your appearance from here.
Tumblr media
Earl Walter: Good grief...it’s because you enter  the caste of other people without any contract. It can’t be helped.
Reiji: Come to think of it. You can pretty much guess what we want right?
Yui: As I thought, this voice….I think this voice is somehow similar to the voice that I have heard in my dream…)
Reiji: Let me say it clearly. I want you to give her heart back.
Earl Walter: Fufu~ What kind of conversation if this.
Reiji: I see your point. Before that, shall we look at this thing here?
Yui: (The watch…)
Earl Walter: What the heck is that?
Tumblr media
Reiji: I have received it for a certain reason. It’s a valuable item… ...the pocket watch of the time-end.  (/ dimension) [
It’s said that only those who see it know the end of the time and they despair and go crazy...it’s a bad taste.
Earl Walter: It sounds very interesting only if your words are true.
Reiji: So, I am going to hand it over to you. ….Be careful at the moment you’ll open it.
Seems like Earl is not intending to show your appearance. Therefore, we will leave this watch here and go back.
Buttler: Understood. I’ll keep it in a specific place.
Reiji: Then, I’ll excuse myself. You, we are leaving.
Yui: Y-yes. But is it okay to leave the watch here?
Reiji: Don’t worry about it. It’s our chance to get to the treasure house to search your heart…
Yui: (I feel anxious but...let’s hurry as he said…)
Tumblr media
Yui: (I ran following him but...Where’s the treasure house?)
(Entering to the Castle is not that easy like he said.)
Reiji: Perhaps it’s the other side of that door.
Yui: Is that so?
Reiji: According to my research information, yes.
Yui: (I knew he’s wonderful…)
But it's a treasure house after all...It depends how strict they are.
Reiji: Wrong, It seems to be a password, and it’s already being obtained.
Yui: Eh? Before anyone even noticed…?
Tumblr media
Reiji: Fufu~ The road of snakes are only snakes, right? Leave it to me.
Yui: (Uuh...Reiji San is having so much for these facts but...I am rather worried…)
It’s unexpected that they had set a password for security.
Reiji: Yeah...it’s awkward not knowing what kind of trick it is.
There’s also a possibility that the guard will come to know we are invaders in this castle.
Yui: That’s…
Reiji: Oh my Oh my, don’t make such a pathetic face.
Since, you can trust me.
Yui: Yes...that’s right.
Reiji: Let’s enter…?
Yui: (Hm? Somehow his face looks a little depressed…)
Um...what’s the password?
**HAHAHA HE is blushing**
Tumblr media
Reiji: I will. I will tell you but...let me take mental preparation.
Yui: I don’t mind it though…
Reiji: Good grief, what a bad sensation…
Yui: That’s...if you would like that I will say it instead of you?
Reiji: No, I won’t give you permission to —
Yui: (Wh—What kind of password is that actually?)
Reiji: It’s time we will go ——
Tumblr media
Earl Walter: Oh my, are you already done saying it. This password is something lewd to get heard by your cute lover after, right?
Tumblr media
Hahahah! However you managed to know that password pretty well. As expected from....Reiji Sakamaki. (Sakamaki Reiji)
Yui: Eh, do you know his name?
Earl Walter: Hahahah. Not only the name, I know everything about your future planning.
Unfortunate...Her heart is not here.
Reiji: Tch...You can see through everything, huh.
Yui: Then...where is my —!?
Earl Walter: Well, don’t get panicked and calm down. You came here to talk to me, right?
Reiji: Wh—!...You are right. Seems like you can give us time, so I am requesting it.
I will offer you that pocket watch. Therefore, ...I want you to give her heart back anyways.
Earl Walter: The truth is that this ‘pocket watch of demise’ is interesting...Once I lose it, I’ll never get a chance to get it back again.
But...Sakamaki Reiji. It suits you that you are the owner of this pocket watch...so, I am confused.
Tumblr media
Reiji: What do you mean?
Earl Walter: I am not collecting treasures just because I want it.
If it comes out that the owner is not suitable for this watch, then I will receive it.
This watch was passed to you by your important person. Even though I am hesitating, I have gained enough qualities to achieve it.
For all of these, I can’t accept this from you. That was bad luck….Here, I will give it back.
Tumblr media
Reiji: —Ugh...Understood.
Yui: (Then, does it mean that I am not appropriate to possess by heart?)
(Certainly I had to face many situations over time, but...I always think that I can overcome anything if Reiji San is with me…)
(I am proud of that…)
Reiji: It’s an honor to be complimented but…
But she is the perfect one to have that heart inside of her. ...Even a little, I think that.
Yui: Reiji San —!
Earl Walter: However, I can’t get convinced with just your words.
Reiji: Then Earl. If I convince you she’s the appropriate one, then will you give her heart back?
Earl Walter: You get the point.
Yui: But, saying it has to be ‘appropriate’...What should we basically do then? Won’t you give us any clue?
Earl Walter: Huh, I can’t give any clue. You have to behave that way so that it seems wonderful from many perspectives.
Yui: (Uuh...I haven’t understood like I should have supposed to understand.)
Reiji: I can’t agree with your deal at all. I told you, didn’t I? To me, she is the appropriate owner of the heart.
But Earl. You just tell something wrong. At this rate, we are just like opposites as parallel lines.
Earl Walter: Certainly you are right. … ...Well then, it’s a task that I assign to you.
Yui: If we clear that task, then will I get my heart?
Tumblr media
Earl Walter:   Yes, I promise. First, you have to help a person who is in trouble. Second, correct a person’s mistakes out there.
Tumblr media
Earl Walter:  Third is to win over an animal.
Yui: Is that all…?
Reiji: I don’t know why you want these, but...I agree. We will do it.
But, it will be good if we clear the second task, right?
Yui: Eh?
Tumblr media
Reiji: Her willingness to help that vampire child who was troubled in the ferris wheel. ….You know it pretty well, am I wrong, Earl?
Earl Walter: Hmph…
Yui: But it was the incident before he promised, right? So, we can’t count that….
Reiji: No, it’s counted. At that time, Earl was watching our actions.
Yui: Ehh?
(Oh, it was mentioned that Earl was observing us. Was that his familiars or something?)
Tumblr media
Earl Walter: Hahah. I see...You are so sharp. Yes, that’s correct.
Reiji: Not too fast. If the child who fell, then the surrounding people would be gathered.
It means that it goes far beyond the fact that it has prevented others from getting in trouble.
As a result, I flew and helped him out, but if she wouldn’t notice and took any action, I would have overlooked that child for sure.
Tumblr media
Earl Walter: I got it, I got it. You have cleared the 1st task.
Yui: Ah...Thank you so much!
Reiji: Honestly,  even though your heart was snatched, you often say such a ‘thank you’.
Yui: Uh..that’s right…
Earl Walter: Hahah, then, I am looking forward to it.
Reiji: We’ll try to finish and return back to you quickly.
Tumblr media
Yui: (We could think about Bernstein castle later, but…)
*Reiji comes by running*
Reiji: …….*Sighs*
Yui: (Since then, we are targeting task 2, and searching everywhere, but...looks like we have bad eye-sight.)
By the way, how did you notice that we have been observed by Earl in the ferris wheel?
Reiji: I had to bluff.
Yui: Eeh!?
Reiji: Doing naughty like following us or something, it’s only Earl’s job, right?
Yui: (That’s how it was but...it was good that he did manage to win.) *Blushing*
Reiji: We should speed up and clear up the tasks , then we’ll be able to enjoy our parade freely.
Yui: Y-yes —!
Reiji: Oh my, oh my. Knowing that we will have after hereafter, you are making such a childish face…. I am shocked though.
Yui: (But I’ll be with Reiji san all the time so,it’s obvious... Hm?)
Ah...the surroundings are so crowded but there’s only one place which is quiet…
Reiji: Maybe, it’s now our chance to catch the people who are doing bad things.
Yui: (Uh...There’s a possibility but I have a bad feeling about it.)
Reiji: Let us go. Fufu~ I wonder what kind of evil we’re going to meet.
Tumblr media
Yui: (It gets creepier if you get closer. It has a kinda human face…)
Reiji: “If you put your hand inside the mouth, it will answer your questions or doubts or tell you the truth”...I see.
Yui: It sounds quite interesting!
Reiji: Haa...only a carefree head can think that this is interesting, it’s likely you.
Yui: Uuh...it’s awful.
Reiji: Kuku~ What about putting your hands there. I hope those hands will be properly attached, so you can’t pull it out.
Yui: Oh, don’t make me frightened anymore…
Tumblr media
Reiji: I am not. It's a demon world after all, so it’s not a surprise if such things happen.
Yui: (I am scared but...by any chance, we may get hints about our tasks.)
(More importantly…)
If you are with me, then I am gonna be fine, right?
*Reiji Blushing*
Tumblr media
Reiji: Yes...that will be enough…
Yes: Fufu~ yes!
*After a while*
Tumblr media
Yui: (I have put my hand but...what question shall I ask?)
Um...Where can we find evil people?
Reiji: Haah...what a foolish question it is.
Yui: Uuh, but I got no other cho—
Zatan’ mouth: Let’s see...It’s main street.
Yui: Kyaa—
(Inside the mouth...it’s holding my hands?)
Zatan’s mouth: Aah! I can see! In the dress shop, there’s a very evil guy!
Yui: R-really—?
Zatan’s mouth: Yes, that right! That’s why, just run and catch him there!!
Tumblr media
Yui: (Ah...he just released my hand. Could it be that he has sensed something from my hand by using his fortune-telling power?)
I’m saying it but...shall we go there?
Reiji: You...please put your hand there one more time.
Yui: Eh, but…
Reiji: Something gets stuck inside it. Just do what I say!
Yui: Yes—!
*Yui placed her hand inside the mouth*
Yui: Excuse me...where can we find evil people?
Zatan’s mouth: Let’s see...it’s Saint Honore Park.
Yui: Eh?
Tumblr media
Zatan’s mouth: The guy who’s riding the 3rd from the front in the roller-coaster!
Hurry up —Hurry up —! Catch him!!
Yui: (It’s completely different from what he said right ago...what should I do?)
Reiji: Kukuku~ I find him, the evil guy.
Yui: Eh?
Reiji: Evil person who pretends to give appropriate information but misleads people in reality, he is right there.
Yui: Ah…
(He’s not good but...he still hasn't got that far to be called evil, right?)
Reiji: By the way, at the time you put your hand there, did you feel something?
Yui: I am not sure but something squeezed my hand tightly. That hand was big and probably a male’s hand.
Reiji: ….And you were quietly obedient there, huh?
Yui: Y-yes!
Reiji: Too defenseless...good grief. It was my fault to count on you.
*Reiji holds Yui’s hand*
Reiji: 1st of all, we’ll get out of here and move into an open space. Then, explain everything to me.
Yui: Y-yes!
(Uuh, it hurts! He’s squeezing my hand tightly!)
Reiji: Oh my, looks like I can’t let away this hand, not even for an instant.
Tumblr media
Yui: (But I think...it makes me happy) *Blushing*
Tumblr media
Yui: Nh...this ice-cream looks delicious.
(Eating ice-cream while sitting in front of the fountain, it somehow sounds like everyone’s  dating, it feels so good.)
Reiji: I see...at least, I am feeling refreshed.
Certainly the owner of the ice-cream had so much useful information, but I got tired hearing too many useless stories.
I had to cut out the conversation for the ice-cream, but if I wouldn’t do it, then I would still be there.
Yui: Th-thank you for trouble….
Reiji: Therefore, appreciate it.
Yui: Eh?
*Reiji is touching Yui*
Yui: (H-he’s holding my wrist —)
Reiji: Um…*licks her ice-cream*
It’s taste is so good. Seems like his ice-creams get sold not only for shop-keeper’s art of conversation, but also it’s taste.
Yui: Y-yes!
(Indirect kiss...Uuh...I am nervous…) *Blushing*
Tumblr media
Reiji: Eat it quickly or it will melt. Do you want to spoil my efforts?
Yui: I- I will eat…!
Reiji: Oh my oh my, you're a very fidgety person. By the way, that Zatan’s mouth’s place.
Yui: Yes?
Reiji: According to that romor lover shopkeeper, in that society, there’s a time when people stop working from the very early morning.
I am sure that the people who were there at that time, are now out and absent in that society.
Yui: I see…
Reiji: At the moment of enter and exiting in the Zatan’s mouth, we’ll catch him.
But...we’re having some free time, shall we go back to the hotel at once?
Yui: ...Let’s go!
Tumblr media
Yui: (I took a refreshing bath. And then all I do now is to feel the night breeze and go to bed.)
Reiji: What’re you doing here? You’ll catch a cold.
Yui: I’ll be fine! And look at the canal, it’s so pretty!
Reiji: You are right. It’s a beautiful scenery.
Yui: (I want to immerse myself into this night view, but I have my worries about tomorrow…)
(We have to catch that guy in the Zatan’s mouth and ask why did he lie?)
(Also tell him not to confuse people’s hearts like this…)
(I hope everything will go well, but it’s not going to be easy…)
Reiji: You are wrinkling your eyebrows. It’s okay to have worries in your head, but right now, relax yourself a little.
And at the same time, it won’t make sense if you don’t relax your shoulders a little.
Tumblr media
Yui: I see...I am sorry.
Reiji: Wait a little…
Tumblr media
Yui: (Eh?)
*Fades to CG*
Tumblr media
Reiji: I think we should cheers, as we’re having a rare night view.
Yui: Eh?
Reiji: It is called Vampire Juice. I don’t know if it tastes delicious to a human like you.
But...it’s a cheers with you, so...cheers.
*Cheers sound of glass*
Yui: Cheers. ….Thank you for today, Reiji San…
Reiji: Yeah! I had to get involved in many things, so I had wasted so much energy.
Yui: (Fufu~ Exchanging glass with Reiji San like this is a surprise. Looks like we both have grown-up.) ((Yui used the word “otona” means getting adult or grown-up))
Reiji: *Drinks* N...nh..ah...It’s better than usual. Is that because it’s of parade?
Yui: (But...to me, it tastes like usual juice.)
Reiji: *Drinking* ...Nh..nh...nh..
Yui: Reiji san, you don’t have to drink all at once…!
Reiji: Ah...I’m sorry but...I can’t stop..*drinks more* nh..n...
Yui: (He finished the whole glass in no time...somehow Reiji san’s behaving is becoming strange—)
Reiji: Fufu~ I am feeling great. It’s Vampire juice after all.
Yui: (Actually, what is the effect of drinking this juice?)
Reiji: ...Yui
Yui: Yes….!?
Reiji: Now...stay like this.
Yui: ...y-yes!...
Reiji: Not only now, but forever, stay inside my arms like this. Okay?
Yui: (I am happy but...it’s so embarrassing that I can’t say a thing)
Tumblr media
Reiji: Kuku~ You are very lovely…*kiss*
Yui: Nh..!?
Reiji: What’s wrong? You can raise those voices even more…*kiss* nh
Yui: Re-Reiji San!?—
Reiji: Fufu~...I am not in the mood to let you go yet. Prepare yourself.
Yui: (Reiji San is somehow...different than usual…!)
(I want to enjoy this night view but...I am so nervous that I can’t help it…)
(But...it feels comfortable the way he wrapped arms around me...I am so happy…)
(Just like this, two of us in the future. And also tomorrow, we have to do our best)

How writing can help you learn your target language?
Writing is the least favorite activity because it’s a silent activity that requires you to think harder than usual. It is often associated with formal style, you know, fancy words, smart arguments, important topics, logical connections, etc. It’s hard. You need a lot of time to produce something meaningful. At school though, you get only 50 minutes to do it. I’m not surprised students don’t like writing. Every time they submit a text, they say: “I don’t know, it sounds stupid to me” or “I don’t think it makes much sense.” I get it. They say that to not come off as “stupid” because they couldn’t write anything meaningful.
Where’s the problem then?
 1. Teachers rarely state the reasons for writing
Tip #1 I hate doing things if I don’t know why I’m doing them in the first place. Students believe that they do all the school assignments because, you know, that’s just school. Why not show them how they can apply skills learned while doing those dull school assignments in real life. Why not tell them that they’re writing this particular essay because they’ll need that skill as an adult and different types of essays will help them make better life choices. Let me show you what I mean:
Book review
You’re stating your opinion;
You talk about the strong and weak points of the thing you’re reviewing;
You’re introducing the thing to your audience.
In real life, someone asks you (your boss): “What do you think about this deal? Will we benefit from it?” What your boss really asks you is: “Can you review this for me?” At work, you can do it a form of a PowerPoint presentation or just casual talk. Useful? Extremely!
For and against essay
You introduce the topic;
You give some arguments for and against (why this thing is bad and why it is good);
You state your opinion.
In real life, such a skill might come in handy when you have some doubts about something. An issue you’re dealing with is controversial, but you need to make a decision anyway. Let's say that your company has been presented with an opportunity to make a lot of money, but the stakes are high. You need to consider it carefully. What do you do? You come up with a “for and against essay” kind of thing. First, you do a bit of research about the topic (introduction), then you look for people’s opinions, good opinions (arguments for), and bad opinions (arguments against). Finally, based on those opinions, you try to make the best decision possible. Useful? YES!
Comparative essay
You introduce the topic;
You focus on the thing that you want to compare;
You state your opinion.
You want to buy a new car, or your friend asks you to help them decide which car they should buy. What do you do? You compare two cars. In real life, you don’t start off with an introduction (especially when you talk with friends), you go straight into the body part of an essay. The core part of an essay that contains the most valuable information. You choose features (of the cars you consider buying) that interest you the most and you compare them.
Tip #2 Writing such essays will help you express yourself more logically, whether it’s at work or among friends. To master it, you need to practice as much as you can. School is the time when you can do it without worrying about the grave and dire consequences. At school, you get second chances, in life rarely, if ever.
Target language + writing = success
This rant is getting long, but bear with me!
When you study on your own, you don’t have to worry about all the things you worry about at school. You’re writing for yourself, so your essays can be messy. You can make mistakes and spend days on producing a piece of writing. The goal here is to practice expressing yourself. Writing gives you time to come up with ideas, words, phrases, and grammatical contractions. It’s just you and the sheet of paper. No one is going to judge you or grade you. It’s stress-free and you can write whatever you want.
Tip #3 Remember that essays follow particular structures for a reason. The commonly accepted structures help you sound less chaotic and more organized.
Tip #4 When you’re told to write something, don’t think: “I’ll never need it anyway, why bother at all.” Instead, think: “Hey, this will help me present my viewpoints when someone asks me to compare two things or state my opinion on a controversial matter.”
Tip #5 The way you think affects your performance and attitude. Find reasons and keep them in mind while writing.
So yeah, writing might be boring, but it is extremely helpful. I wish schools had a rule where teachers must draw analogies between school assignments and real life.

Omg! So excited! May I please request how Sanada, Shiraishi, Atobe, Niou, and Kite would confess to their long time crush? Thank you and best of luck with the blog! ♥️ Love PoT so much, I miss the fandom :(
My very first request yay! I knew there are still people around!! Thank you so much for sending in something, sweetie! I hope to see you around ♥️
(Also I'm so sorry this turned out so long lol)
Tumblr media
Sanada
Let’s face it, Yukimura and Yanagi are probably the ones who first noticed how different Sanada is whenever he’s around you, his crush. And since they judged that their friend’s crush has been going on long enough, they’re probably the ones who tries to get the ball rolling and hints at Sanada to just confess already.
Confessing is a big thing for this man, because he will only do so when he’s 99.99% sure that he wants to have a serious relationship with the other person.
Knowing his family background and his personality, of course he would get all traditional about the whole process (i.e. if you have an older brother, he would probably have tried to get his permission to 'court' you first before he actually does he's so precious omg)
He starts by inviting you out along with your friends and some of the tennis club members, so you won't feel awkward with him alone. It's also a good chance for him to get to know your friends more, which he will need to do when he becomes your boyfriend anyway. Sanada also knows he's not too good at talking so he wants you to get more comfortable around him in general. When your response is positive, then he starts to invite you out on real dates - just the two of you.
Throughout this whole process, only when he has verbally heard from you directly that you do enjoy having him around, he finally finds his courage and is convinced to take the next step. On the actual d-day itself, he's oddly out of it and you're probably going to misunderstand his silence as boredom or something like that, but when he finally, finally finds the opportunity to confess, it'll blow you away because of how unusually soft and sincere he looks.
"We have known each other for quite some time. This might sound unexpected to you, but I have found myself thinking of our future together on several occasions. I realize that all these time, I have been longing to stand by your side, not just as a friend, but as a partner. If you will... would you honor me with the title of your boyfriend?"
Tumblr media
Shiraishi
Literally plans out everything for over a week down to a t. And by everything I mean everything.
Researches the best date spots (How far are they from your house? How busy will they be at the d-day? If it rains, are there any other alternative spots nearby?), the best restaurants to dine in (Are the food healthy? Will they adhere to your preferences? How many stars does the restaurant have? What's the best time to eat there?), the best possible place to confess (How atmospheric is it? Are there any risks of being interrupted? Is there any way he can reserve the place or something along the line?), the weather on that day (Sunny? Windy? Rain? Snow? Humid?), etc. Everything has to be perfect.
Shiraishi takes you to your most favorite places, opens the door for you and makes sure you're seated on your chair before going to sit on his own, politely rejects girls who swoons over him (which seems to always happen when you go out - one time you tell him he needs to stop looking like he just came out from a fashion magazine and he just laughs), and escorts you like the perfect textbook definition of a gentleman for the whole day.
Despite his research though, things can't always be a hundred percent perfect, so there are actually some parts / events of the date where Shiraishi isn't completely satisfied with, but you honestly don't notice because he had been so kind and accommodating, so of course a few mishaps here and there are tolerable (and they're probably mostly not his fault anyway)
He's composed when he finally confesses, but inwardly he's frantically freaking out and he's constantly trying to gauge your reactions because he will pull back as soon as you look uncomfortable - at the very least, if he’s rejected, he doesn't want to destroy your friendship.
"Hey, [Last_Name]. Do you think I'll make a good boyfriend? .... I'm glad that you think I would. Then... Do you think we'll make a good couple? I personally think we would. And honestly, I want to make that reality... What do you think?"
Tumblr media
Atobe
He has the confidence and the means to make the most extravagant confession on Earth, so why should he hold back, right?
Due to being around him for quite long, though, you're most likely already used to his eccentrics, so you wouldn't think too much about it when he actually asks you to go somewhere with him, thinking that he just doing his usual 'this-ore-sama-will-show-you-his-prowess' antics.
He takes you to a newly built indoor 'garden', where a wide variety of plants are grown and cared for. Actually, ‘garden’ is an understatement. There are several 'greenhouses' that hosts different kinds of plants, apparently imported in from all over the world. Strange trees and flowers grows everywhere, the air is cooling and fresh because of all the plantations, and as you walk down the path surrounded by lush greens, you're very much awed and fascinated by everything.
But that's all nothing compared to the man-made waterfall he takes you to as your last destination. You can only stare in wonder as you watch the rushing water, not realizing that it's especially cold in this 'greenhouse' until Atobe gentlemanly drapes a shawl he prepared beforehand around you. He then takes you around the small forest around the waterfall and you both walk up the stairs to find that there's a modern looking restaurant that looks more like a villa, situated just at the right height and distance to have the perfect view of the waterfall and its surrounding area.
You'll find yourself sitting at the comfiest dining chair in your life, sipping the freshest orange juice, row upon row of your favorite foods coming out one after another. And just when you're finishing your dessert, all smiles and relaxed, and you thank him for the fun outing, that's when he confidently drops the question.
"Let me make this clear. Ore-sama doesn't just treat anyone this way. You're special. You're the only one who is good enough to stand equally beside me. Don't you agree? Of course, I'm only accepting nothing but 'Yes' as an answer."
It's only way later into your relationship when you realize that the place he took you to is owned and constructed by Atobe himself. When you ask your boyfriend about this fact, he finally admits (with a very proud smirk) that he built the whole thing just to confess to you lol
Tumblr media
Niou
I personally think his confession wouldn't exactly be 'planned', in a sense.
He just has to tease you, his adorable crush, every chance he has. Just because he likes to see focus your attention to him and he thinks the angry / troubled look on your face is the cutest. But after a while it comes to the point that his pranks and teasing remarks are getting more and more frequent, and it’s getting too much to your liking. He doesn’t exactly take your verbal protest seriously, so you end up giving him the silent treatment, just to let him know that enough is enough.
Niou, who is already used to have you around and has taken your presence for granted, is suddenly left to his own thoughts because you're either running away from him upon seeing him, or isn't showing any reaction when he manages to catch up to you. Honestly you probably just want him to lessen his teasing, but the impact of your action is bigger than you think.
In the end, after a long lecture from Yagyuu (the lecture itself was boring but he was forced to sit seiza for a whole hour and his legs hurt like hell) and Yukimura's simple but straight-to-the-point comment ("Hm? Is [Last_Name] avoiding you lately, Niou? It's because you've been borderline mean to them, you know?"), he realizes that he has to make things right.
He's surprisingly gentle and serious when he asks you to have lunch with him one day, and you feel a little bad for making him feel so guilty, so you accept. It's already shocking that he hasn't done or said anything that's remotely playful all the while you're walking to the place you're supposed to have lunch in, but he's treating you so gentlemanly you almost suspect he switched places with Yagyuu.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you hate me, and I didn't think I would annoy you that much. I've reflected. I should have treated the person I love more preciously. I promise I'll be better! So don't hate me, yeah?"
“.... Niou? Did you just say..... ‘the person I love'?”
"Huh? .... Puri. I guess the cat's out of the bag, huh? ... That's right. I really like you. I find your teary face really adorable, but I still like it best when you smile. So will you go out with me? I promise I'll never let you cry from sadness."
Tumblr media
Kite
This scheming and calculating man!! Kite will only confess if he has already studied up your behavior and has determined that you do harbour interest in him as a love interest. From there, it’s a strategic battle for him to bring you two even closer.
He would subconsciously condition you to be more dependent or just overall be closer to him. I can actually see him create certain situations where you would have no choice but to accept his help, or for you to offer your help, being the kind soul that you are.
Like the time where he invites you to watch the tennis club practice, and it just so conveniently rains, and it just so happens that you lost your umbrella, and so when he offers you to walk you home, what can you do except comply? And if on your way he purposefully timed your walking pace so that the car on the street drives by a rather big puddle, resulting in him 'shielding' you and getting his uniform all wet, how could you not invite him into your abode so he can dry off first? If he doesn’t have the opportunity to be alone with you, trust me, he will create one.
It's not that he's doing all those things with ill intent in mind though, and he's definitely not trying to hurt you. His goal is to make you feel like you need him. It's just his way of getting you to fall in love with him lol
Surprisingly though, I think his actual confession would be pretty 'normal'. Okinawa generally has nice beaches, so he would take you to a nice and relaxing beach walk, finishing off with dinner on an outdoorsy type restaurant overlooking the sea, where you both can watch the sun set against the horizon with soft live music in the background. Overall, when the atmosphere is nice and solemn just shortly after the sun finally sets, that's when he finally speaks.
"[Last_Name]-san. You are a wonderful and intriguing person. To be honest, I didn't think you would still be sticking around after all this time, but as with many other times, you continue to surprise me. At first, I was merely curious about you, but soon enough you flawlessly turned my curiosity into attraction. This is troubling. I will have you take responsibility by going out with me."

I Found You | soulmate seventeen series
a/n: this is my first traditionally written imagine i’m posting here, so i hope you like it!! i’m a little bit nervous to post, so please let me know how you like it :)
minghao x reader | soulmate seventeen
~ - fluff
word count: 3.2k
main masterlist
All you could focus on is the ticking of the clock and the tapping of your pencil on the worn-out wooden desk. No matter how hard you tried to tune into your professor’s monotone voice lecturing about string theory, your mind kept wandering elsewhere. Literally anywhere else. At first, you started thinking about why you had to take this class anyway. It didn’t have anything to do with your major, so what was the point? But as soon as that thought came, it went, and you were trying to decide where to get lunch after the unnecessarily long class ended.
Leaning down to your side and reaching into your backpack on the floor, you pulled out a brown leather-bound notebook. Running your fingers over the intricate gold designs adorning the spine, admiring the swirls and flowers, you placed it on your desk and flipped it open. Gliding your pencil across the unlined, seemingly old paper, you wrote “What do I get for lunch? My stomach is about to grumble in class”.
You run a hand through your hair with a sigh and look back up at your professor, once again trying to figure out what he is attempting to explain. One-dimensional strings? Quantum gravity? It meant nothing to you. Thankfully, Hao had been helping you almost every night. Honestly, you felt a little bad because he was trying his hardest to make it simple for you, but the content was essentially impossible to understand. Your brain just doesn’t seem to cooperate when it comes to physics.
Looking back down at the notebook below you, you received a response: “What about that pizza place you like down the street from your apartment?”. Just the thought of the greasy slice of goodness makes your stomach emit an audible grumble, causing several heads near you to turn your way, judgmental looks behind their eyes. After taking a moment to apologetically smile at them and deal with your embarrassment, you jot on the paper, “Hao, you’re a genius how do you always know what I want?”.
Almost as quickly as you finished writing your sentence, you see Hao’s handwriting appear letter by letter on the page. “It’s because I’m your soulmate, duh”. You lean your head on your hand and smile to yourself, noticing the students around you start packing up their books and leaving the room, signaling to you that class had finished.
After closing all of your books and stuffing them in your backpack, you slung a strap on your shoulder and started to make your way out of the classroom. Before you had the opportunity to escape into the hallway, your professor called to you, “Ms. Y/L/N, would you mind seeing me for a moment?”
Slowly turning around, you made your way up to the front of the classroom where he was wiping down the blackboard for the next class. It felt as if you were walking to the gallows due to the tone of his beckoning. “Yes, sir?”, you asked, curious as to what this may be about. Had he noticed you weren’t paying attention? That you were writing in your soulmate journal?
“As you know, final exams are coming up and I am concerned about your final grade in this class. In order to pass, you need to earn at least an 85% or higher on the final,” he nonchalantly said, not even bothering to make eye contact with you as he began to pack up.
You knew that you were not the best at physics, but you did not realize your grade was so low. That you would basically have to eat, sleep, and breathe the subject until the end of the term. “I’m so sorry, is there any extra credit I could possibly do? I’ve been trying my best, it’s just that-“, before you had the opportunity to finish your statement, he had cut you off.
“You haven’t been trying your best, though. Far too often I see you writing away in that notebook of yours and I highly doubt your taking notes.” You didn’t even know what to say in response to that because he was right. You weren’t taking notes. But could you be blamed for wanting to talk with your soulmate? Somewhere along the way since your 16th birthday, you and Hao discovered that you lived in different time zones so there were only certain times of the day you could talk to each other…one of those times just happened to be during this class. If only your professor understood this.
As if the gruff man in front of you read your mind, he continued, “I am assuming that is your soulmate journal?” Silently giving a small nod, you internally cringed for what was to come because based on the raised eyebrow and demeaning glare, it could not be good. “You know all of that’s bullshit right?”. Your jaw slightly dropped because you were not expecting that to come from your professor’s mouth.
“Statistically only 32% of people actually end up with their ‘soulmate’? No one even understands the technology of these journals or where they come from. Researchers haven’t been able to find conclusive evidence of the accuracy of these journals. The odds are higher that you will end up with someone in this class rather than whomever you are speaking to through those pieces of paper. I suggest you keep this in mind for the remainder of the semester,” your professor concluded and hastily marched out of the classroom.
You are dumbfounded. You didn’t know what your professor wanted to see you about, but in no way did you suspect that. Alright, maybe you suspected him addressing you about your poor grade, but that rant? Probably would have been the last thing you guessed. After overcoming the initial shock of the encounter you just were on the receiving end of, you shook your head and finally left the room.
Walking down the street to your favorite pizza place (as Hao suggested), you couldn’t stop thinking about everything your professor said. Was it really true that only 32% of people end up with their soulmate? And now that you thought about it, having someone’s writing showing up in some magical journal you get on your 16th birthday seems a little impractical too.
After taking a seat at the small pizzeria, you took a bite, the cheese stretching, and about to fall off the slice. You wiped your greasy fingers off on a napkin before pulling out your soulmate journal to write to Hao, telling him his suggestion was an excellent choice.
While waiting for his response, you decided to do a little bit more research about the probability of soulmates ending up together. With a simple google search, thousands of articles came up about the illegitimacy of the journals, however, there were equally as many describing the validity of them while recounting people’s personal positive experiences.
After reading article after article, you couldn’t help but question if you would actually end up with Hao. You’d never had to think about it before. Your whole life, you had always been told: “whoever you write to in your soulmate journal is who you will find true love with and be forever happy”. You didn’t have a reason to question it either because you love Hao. Even though you had never seen him, you knew that you love him.
Your parents were connected through the soulmate journal and found each other, so they raised you to believe that the same would happen for you. The difference is that your parents had known each other since they were six years old. It was easier for them. You didn’t even know where Hao was from. You had your guesses considering his timezone, but you really knew nothing else. The journal would erase writing that held personal information (which sounds kind of…magical? but everyone has a notebook in which they can speak to their soulmate, so who’s to judge when that is an aspect of your world). When you first got your journal, you immediately wrote in it, providing your social media handles so your soulmate could find you. However, with every letter you wrote, they disappeared twice as fast.
There were many sleepless nights you complained to your friends about how hard it was because you just wanted to find him. You just wanted to be able to see his face. Hear his voice. Almost everyone you knew found their soulmates easily, but you were what felt like the only one left without your soulmate. Especially one on the other side of the world.
Becoming so wrapped in your thoughts, you picked up your pen again and wrote in the journal, “Hey…have you ever thought that we maybe…won’t end up together?”.
“What do you mean? Of course, we will end up together. We’re soulmates. That’s the whole purpose of this journal,” Minghao responded.
“I know, I know, but my professor just told me some stuff today. It’s stupid and I know I shouldn’t even worry about it, but he said that only 32% of people actually end up with their soulmate,” you explained. Sitting up in your seat, you started to get a little anxious. You know that Hao hated talking about this stuff.
“Y/N, I’ve told you this so many times before. We will find each other. I will find you. Don’t listen to the statistics,”. As you see the words appear on the paper in front of you, you can’t help but think…what if? What if you don’t find each other. Taking a moment to logically think about it, there is really no definitive way to track the other down. It all happens by chance.
As you placed your pen on the paper, about to write back, Hao’s handwriting appeared again. “I don’t want you to worry about this. The universe wants us together. It will find a way.”
With a sigh, you simply responded, “You’re right, I’ll talk to you later” and quickly drew a heart. You closed the journal, hoping it would help the thoughts leave your head, but you couldn’t stop the constant what-ifs running through your mind for the next days.
During that time, you did more research and truly discovered statistically how low the chances are that you will find your soulmate. There are 7.5 billion people in the world, what are the odds you find your person?
Things between you and Hao were never really the same after that.
It started out slowly. You would happen to forget your journal at home when you went out and instead of running back to get it (like you usually would), you didn’t bother. There were days that turned into weeks where you wouldn’t write to Minghao at all. Every so often you would maybe leave a kind message telling him to have a good day, but there were no longer meaningful conversations between you two. You even started seeing other boys. If statistically, you were not going to end up with Minghao, it was okay to start looking elsewhere.
Having been raised on the idea that this person on the other end of the journal is who you will end up with, no ifs, ands, or buts about it, didn’t allow you to experience young love the way many people do. When you turned 16, all of your attention went immediately to Minghao…because you were 100% sure you would end up with him. Now that you knew the small likelihood of that actually happening, you allowed yourself to find happiness. Even if it wasn’t with your soulmate.
Not to say that you forgot about Minghao. You could never forget about Minghao. But no matter how much you wished that it would work between you two, you knew the reality of the situation.
Several years had gone by. You and Minghao would write to each other in your journals sometimes, but never at the same time. Typically, you would write a message every several months to update him about what was going on in your life and he would do the same. Even years later, you still regret leaving him the way you did. You cannot imagine what providing little to no explanation did to him, but you were young. You didn’t know how to handle it.
But now, your life was completely different from those years ago when your best friend was through a journal. You had a career that you loved, amazing and supportive friends…there wasn’t more you could ask for. Except that you still hadn’t found someone. You thought that it would be easier to find a boy to spend your life with, even if it wasn’t Minghao, but that didn’t seem to be the case. Everyone was just looking for people to hook up and have one-night-stands with as they waited to find their soulmate. No one had accepted the reality of the situation as you had. While some might say that you were being pessimistic, you liked to think of it as being logical.
It was 8:54am and you were stumbling all over your apartment in an attempt to get dressed while simultaneously pack your bag for work. You were sure that you set your alarm for 6:30am so you had ample time to prepare and have a relaxing morning before you had to leave to catch your train.  The image of the 6:30am alarm on your phone being switched on was ingrained in your mind, you knew you turned it on. Technology works in mysterious ways.
While tugging on the first appropriate shoes you found, you swung open the closet door that contained your sweatshirts that were still appropriate for work. This was your go-to when you were running late and today was definitely one of those days. As you swiftly opened the door, a book fell down from the top shelf. Your soulmate journal.
The panic of the morning immediately halted. It had been years since you had even looked at it. You shoved it away in a random box while moving to this city for your job and you honestly hadn’t thought about it since. While the memories of your conversations with Minghao flooded your mind, you decided to pack it in your bag. Maybe you would write to him while you were on your lunch break.
Grabbing the last of your items, you hurried out the door, trying to make it to the next scheduled train. As you exited your building and began running down the busy sidewalk to the train station, the crisp air whipped against your face. Your nose and ears were numb, but that was the least of your worries.
Your lungs felt like they were on the verge of exploding as you approached the train and saw the double doors sliding closed. “Hey!!! Someone hold the door!!! Please!!!”, you shout breathlessly, hoping to catch the attention of anyone inside the warm transport. To your luck, someone heard you and stuck their hand outside. Little did they know they were saving you from having to wait another 30 minutes for a train.
As you quickened your pace to enter the train, you smiled at the man who held the doors open for you, “Thank you so much, if it weren’t for you I would even more late for work than I am now”.
“No problem,” he said while making his way to a seat. Taking a moment to smooth out your hair, you followed behind him trying to find a place of your own. After looking around, the only one you found available was right across from that same man.
You looked at your watch and couldn’t help but watch the seconds and minutes tick away, making you more and more late for work. Stealing you from your trance, your phone began ringing. Noticing that it was your boss, you couldn’t help but let out a heavy sigh.
Before you had the opportunity to say hello, he was screaming into your ear, “Y/N where are you?! We need you here now!! This is unacceptable behavior.”
“I understand, I apologize. I’m on my way, sir. I will be there as fast as I can,” you responded, trying to keep your cool. After some more several unkind words, your boss hung up the phone. Running your hands over your face, you look up to see the man sitting opposite you, staring at you with wide eyes and a slightly agape mouth. You gave him a small smile and looked away, trying to ignore the look he continued to give you.
“Y/N?” you heard him say.
“Oh, me?” you questioned, to ensure that he was talking to you. Hopefully whatever he has to say won’t take too long because the train was due to stop in three minutes and you had to get off immediately.
He responds with a nod, eyes still as wide as a deer in headlights, “I’m Minghao”.
With that, your expression imitated his. Minghao? As in your Minghao?
“Wait, I don’t understand. You’re here?” you asked because last time you read a message from him in the journal, he hadn’t moved or mentioned traveling. Well…the last time you had touched the journal was years ago.
Minghao quickly moved to rummage in his bag. After a few moments, he pulled out a brown leather-bound notebook…with gold designs on the spine…swirls and flowers.
Before you knew what you were doing, you also began to dig in your bag for your soulmate journal…that happened to fall out of your closet today…that you wouldn’t have opened if your alarm would have gone off…
You immediately opened the old journal for the first time in years. The first words you see are, “I found you”.
Looking up at Hao, tears began to form in your eyes. You hadn’t admitted it to yourself, but it had been so hard without him. It’s like whenever you weren’t with him, everything was so much worse. Even if you only knew each other through the soulmate journal.
The train came to a screeching stop and the people around you began standing and exiting to the station, but you two remained seated. There were some people giving you some strange looks, but they didn’t realize that two people who were meant to be together had finally met. That you and Hao had met.
“I’ve looked everywhere for you,” Hao said as he stood up. “I told you I would find you.”
You couldn’t help yourself, but run up and wrap your arms around him. The arms you wanted to hold you since you were 16. You could finally feel him. Hear his voice. See his face. You could be with him. Not just through pieces of bound paper.
You pulled away from him and looked up into his eyes. Your cheeks were tear-stained, but you couldn’t help it. “We are not a statistic,” Hao softly whispered. His eyes flicked from yours, down to your lips. He moved his hands up to your face, using his thumbs to wipe the tears that won’t stop cascading down your cheeks. He leaned into you slowly, softly pressing his lips to yours.
“I found you,” Hao said so only you could hear, as he leaned his forehead against yours.
He found you.
