astrology basics the houses: asc, mc, ic, etc ✰ !

a quick introduction to the 12 houses and what they mean in your natal chart! this post is not equivalent to proper research, but is meant as a short run-down or a cheat paper for beginners! my ask box is always open for questions or anything else (but pls read the guidelines beforehand!).

THE 1ST HOUSE / THE ASCENDANT

despite popular belief, the ascendant is in my opinion not necessarily the "mask" we wear in front of others, but more so the way we express ourselves. many confuse its meaning with our sun sign, but while that would describe our real identity and ego, the ascendant more so describes our self-expression and the impression others have of us. some people grow more into their ascendant sign with time, but it usually always influences us in a type of way, may that be our clothing style, our way of speaking, or our outer appearance in general. i'd say our rising sign is the most prominent when we first step into a room, exchange the first few words with a new friend, or just pass by somebody on the street!

the first house is ruled by aries/mars.

THE 2ND HOUSE

as the house of possession, this house is all about money, material things, and other things in life we can own (which is not always limited to the tangible). it can tell us our relationship with money, how we deal with it and how we like to spend (or not) it. it may also indicate if we come from a wealthy background or if we come to money later in life (or if we don't).

the second house is ruled by taurus/venus.

THE 3RD HOUSE

as the house of communication, this house is all about your social skills, circles, and relationships. this house highlights mental connections with those close to us. that may be family members like our siblings, our friends, or even our neighbors! early education also falls under this house, as well as how and with who we like to communicate. it's easy to mix up with mercury, but it can show you a deeper inside in your communication, especially if your mercury sign and 3rd house sign differ from each other.

the third house is ruled by gemini/mercury.

THE 4TH HOUSE / THE IMUM COELI

the imum coeli is said to indicate our heritage, home, and where we are from. it can tell us where and how we live during our life, or even during our childhood. someone with their 4th house in cancer may be way more emotionally attached to their home than someone with their 4th house placed in aquarius.

the fourth house is ruled by cancer/the moon.

THE 5TH HOUSE

as the house of pleasure, it can show us the areas where we like to be most creative. it also covers the areas of procreation and children, but also artistic creation and culture. the 5th house also rules romance and romantic relationships, this house is really all about what brings us pleasure. it can show us how we view those relationships, having kids and being around children, and how we feel most creative.

the fifth house is ruled by leo/the sun.

THE 6TH HOUSE

as the house of health, this house is all about what the name entales: our health! it is said that the sign in which it falls can even indicate with what areas of the body we will have to most issues in life. since the signs are also always associated with body parts, for example, aries is commonly assigned to the head, taurus with the throat, and gemini with hands, etc.

the sixth house is ruled by virgo/mercury.

THE 7TH HOUSE / THE DESCENDANT

the descendant is said to be all about "the other". it's one of the strongest indicators to look for when searching for signs of a future spouse/partner. whatever sign it falls into might tell you some traits your potential spouse/partner may have. it may also tell us what traits we are generally attracted to in others. if the 7th house falls into taurus for example, it may indicate that we are attracted to reliable and romantic partners, who ground us and value materialistic things.

the seventh house is ruled by libra/venus.

THE 8TH HOUSE

the eighth house is often referred to as the house of sex, but it also is the house of transformation, (re-)birth, and death. it can tell us about the possession of others, how we transform throughout life, and how we might die. ruled by scorpio/pluto, this house is also all about jealousy, passion, and mystery.

THE 9TH HOUSE

as the house of philosophy, it's all about higher education, long-distance travel, and discovery. it can tell us where or how in life we will further our horizons and where higher education or travel may play a more important role. however, it can also show us where we might be prone to over-enthusiasm and over-spending.

the nineth house is ruled by sagittarius/jupiter.

THE 10TH HOUSE / THE MIDHEAVEN

the midheaven is said to indicate our career, social status, and work life. it's the most prominent when we are (big surprise) at work or school. it can tell us our attitude towards working and how we behave at the workplace. many astrologers also use this to see which career is best suited for someone. someone with a leo mc, for example, would love to be in the spotlight, would love to pursue a creative career, while someone with a capricorn mc may be more of a logical worker, who needs clear structure and realistic goals in order to feel fulfilled with their work.

the tenth house is ruled by capricorn/saturn.

THE 11TH HOUSE

as the house of community, it's all about our friendships, and social circles, but also about networking, organizations, and anything that relates to our community. it also rules over our hopes and dreams, and anything we might want to achieve. it's all about the collective and what we can achieve together as a community, which includes giving and taking from the people around you.

the eleventh house is ruled by aquarius/uranus.

THE 12TH HOUSE

as the house of the subconscious, it's all about the unseen, of shadow, our dreams, and illusions. it often can indicate about "hidden" abilities or traits we have, and in the chart, it can cloud a certain area in life by making it untangible, or hard to reach for our conscious mind. it also can show how we feel towards spirituality (together with the 9th house).

the twelveth house is ruled by pisces/neptune.

Interesting, it's definitely an interesting take. I feel like the number one foot kink guy is still Tae though fajdfja I think Yoongi is more into the worshipping kind of aspect like kneeling at his partner's feet & kissing their feet to declare his undivided devotion to them while Tae's into the kinkiest foot stuff like footjobs or sucking on toes (i said what i said) You get me? Hey Kiyaar, I know we haven't talked too much, so I hope I'm not bothering you during a low spoon period, but I'd been getting a little bit into astrology when you posted your 'calculating natal charts for blorbos with maximum traumatic impact' post and it was really clear and straightforward and I really enjoyed reading it! So I figured maybe I could take a chance and message you to see if you could point me in the direction of astrology resources you've found useful (book or web)?

Because it turns out my latest bout of health issues that have completely kicked my ass, (and have still not recovered from in 6 years,) started on my Saturn return and uhhhh I just learned Jupiter returns are also a thing and my Jupiter is in Taurus so mine is about to start in May, (followed by my north node return in Pisces in 2025,) and I keep trying to look for ways to make it hopefully kick my ass less because honestly I am beyond exhausted right now. But all the sites I keep looking at are very froo-froo three-sentence-paragraph-summaries useless when it comes to advice for dealing with a Jupiter/north node return and the lack of useful information is starting to make me into a ball of anxiety, (or more of one than normal). If you have the spoons to spare to in order to pass along any resources you'd recommend I'd be incredibly grateful. If not, I hope you have a better day soon. I'll send you some good vibes either way.

@loving-that-officey-feel I am SO SORRY i took a year and a day to answer this HI, please do not worry, I very much love this question, I have several resources for you and my favorite one and the most comprehensive is my go-to Just Forks resource, and it is The Astrology Podcast w Chris Brennan. You can listen on any platforms or directly on the website, or I guess you can watch the eps on Youtube because sometimes they will show you visually the chart they are talking about and that's helpful if you need ref visuals. I listen to a lot of these while I have migraines. The eps range from very accessible to incredibly advanced topics, and it's been running for years so there is a wealth of knowledge there. Check out the ep on the nodes (290 + also 127). Like sometimes I am like. I don't really understand [concept] that keeps getting mentioned. I wonder if there is an ep on that. There is. I like this podcast because his approach is incredibly scholarly (he is very Saturnian and I like that) and he brings tons of people on and he generally has v good taste in guests. They're all super weird and interesting. If you want to learn the landscape, he has a series on each planet and on each sign and even just listening to those one by one gives you a framework. You're asking me about a specific transit and I really like Robert Hand's books, I have one of them (Planets in Transit) but there are several; I am always on the lookout for a copy of Planets in Aspect at my used bookstore. He is like. An old man who I believe has a background in Hellenistic Astrology, so his books don't include the Nodes and are speculative about some Uranus transits because most people only experience Uranus transiting into a new house once per lifetime and he wrote it in the 70s. But it's great ref for looking up transits as they happen/what they are specifically doing in my chart. ETA I have, since writing this, listened to an ep of the astrology podcast that indicated that Robert Hand wrote this book and it then ended up becoming like a cornerstone text and held up remarkably well esp considering the stuff about Pluto (newer discovery). The nodes are a thing from Evolutionary Astrology, which is some new age stuff and people most commonly ascribe the NN/SN to current life path/past life baggage/gifts, which isn't like. My favorite. I I think maybe it can be useful to think of the South Node as a representation of stuff you're naturally good at/fluent in, and the North Node as stuff that you need to work consciously to lean into more because it will help you if you do. Mostly the nodes just tell you where the eclipse cycles for the next few years are gonna be and help you situate that in your chart. On Jupiter return - this is general because I can't see your chart or know what's aspecting your jupiter/other taurus placements, etc, but generally Jupiter returns are nicer (unless you have a really debilitated Jupiter for some reason), I would worry more about that Saturn return! How Jupiter in Taurus is gonna be really depends on what house it's in (it's not a bad Jupiter placement), and how it's aspecting your chart ruler/malefics in your chart. I hope this helps! Other books I've been wanting to look at but haven't include Chani's You Were Born For This (I like her app too) Anti-recs: Co-Star (app), Jessica Lanyadoo (i'm tired of hearing her tell everyone to try mindfulness), most tiktok astrologers (they all pass around the hot transit content every 3-4 days) If i missed anything or didn't answer to your satisfaction my box is open!

a quick introduction to the 12 planets and the signs they rule! this post is not equivalent to proper research, but is meant as a short run-down or a cheat paper for beginners! this post took me a loooong time to finish, so please enjoy it! my ask box is always open for questions or anything else (but pls read the rules beforehand!). this is sorted by planet.

01 THE SUN / LEO

the sun rules our ego and our basic identity (some astrologers also say that it shows our life's purpose). it's the sign we most commonly associate with astrology. its significance shows usually more later in life when the question of who we are becomes a much bigger part of our lives.

leo is a fixed fire sign and rules the 5th house in astrology. its attributes include pride, creativity, passion, perfectionism, and loyalty. they fight for who they love and what they believe in. in a natal chart, leo might show us the areas where we strive best in, draw the most attention to or grow into the easiest. they can be idealistic and always crave a special spark in their relationships or lives. but because of their high standard, they are hard workers and usually excel in the areas they are passionate about. intensely loyal, these individuals would fight for their loved ones until the bitter end.

02 THE MOON / CANCER

the moon rules our inner feelings and emotions. because of this many people relate to this sign more than their sun sign. usually, our moon is the most prominent in our childhood years since we learn to control and mask our emotions as we grow older.

cancer is a cardinal water sign and rules the 4th house. its attributes include the home and family, emotions, artistry, and domesticity. they take their time opening up but once you're in their hearts, you're not getting out that easily. in a natal chart, cancer might show where we are the most sensitive, protective, and where we crave familiarity and a home. their survival instinct is strong, so once you've wronged them, there is no going back. many underestimate them, but they can be one of the most vengeful signs. but they are also one of the most giving signs, they'd give their everything to the people they love.

03 MERCURY / GEMINI & VIRGO

mercury rules our thinking and communication styles. it's most prominent in a group setting or when we're studying, when we're curious and communicative. it shows itself in the way we express ourselves and in the patterns we think in. it includes our ideas, thought processes, and sensory information.

gemini is a mutable air sign and rules the 3rd house. its attributes include a form of duality, quick thinking, communicative skills, and an endless amount of new ideas. some may appear cold or scattered, but don't underestimate them. they can also be very affectionate and loving to those they like having around. mental stimulation is the key to their heart. in a natal chart, gemini might show where we are the most communicative about, and where we crave mental stimulation in life.

virgo is a mutable earth sign and rules the 6th house. its attributes include humor, critical thinking, an eye for detail, and a love for knowledge. mercury usually brings a good amount of nervous energy with it, which is why many virgos (and geminis as well) might be prone to overthinking. in a natal chart, virgo might show where we are the most critical of ourselves and want to improve the most.

04 VENUS / TAURUS & LIBRA

venus rules our relationships, finances, values, and sentiments. it's the planet that indicates our creative style and taste in things the most and can show our love styles. it's the most prominent when we are in love or just with close friends, or let our creative juices flow.

taurus is the traditional sign that is ruled by this planet. it is a fixed earth sign and rules the 2nd house. its attributes include stubbornness, calmness, perseverance, and determination. they care deeply about their loved ones and are loyal (some might be a bit possessive), and they usually have a thing for materialism. in a natal chart, taurus might show the areas where we have a hard time leaving our comfort zones. it also shows where we are the most stubborn and determined.

libra is the younger sign under venus' ruling and is a cardinal air sign. it rules the 7th house. its attributes include societal, kindness, diplomacy, harmonic, indecisiveness. they usually enjoy knowing what happens in their social circle and are masters at sweet-talking their way through life. they are hopeless romantics and may be prone to idealizing goals and relationships. in a natal chart, libra might show the area where we are the most compromising and forthcoming. it also shows where close relationships might play an important role in our lives.

05 MARS / (SCORPIO &) ARIES

mars rules our drive and the way we take action in life. it is a very physical planet and often indicates how we deal with our energy in some way. it's the most prominent when we take initiative or need to release some energy. it also influences our creativity and how we approach matters of the heart.

aries is a cardinal fire sign and rules the 1st house. traditionally, scorpio used to be ruled by mars but in modern astrology, it's aries who's ruled by the fire planet. its attributes include courageousness, keenness, determination, optimism, and confidence. they can easily get bored with routine or mundane things, people or relationships, so often they keep searching for the next thing to catch their attention. a lot of them also have this restlessness in them because they always feel like there is something bigger and better just around the corner. in natal chart, aries might show the area where we are the most impulsive, passionate and excited. it can also show in which areas of life we have or need to have a great fighting spirit.

06 JUPITER / SAGITTARIUS (& PISCES)

jupiter rules over expansion, healing, and good fortune in our lives. it can show us how we attract luck into our lives. it might also indicate areas we can improve easily or have some talents that we otherwise may not know of. it's the most prominent when we indulge in the traits or experiences that bring us good fortune, depending on where jupiter is placed in the natal chart.

sagittarius is a mutable fire sign and rules the 9th house. similar to mars, pisces was traditionally ruled by jupiter, but nowadays it's sagittarius who is ruled by this planet. its attributes include optimism, enthusiasm, humor, freedom-loving, and idealism. like any fire sign, they crave excitement and a life far away from the mundane. this sign likes to keep the fun of their relationship and easy-going, they don't do very well with pessimistic or overly emotional people. though many of them have a soft side to them that they show only to the people who are patient enough to wait for it. they have a great passion and very strong will, and usually find a way to get what they want in life, not to mention that they are great at persuasion too.

07 SATURN / CAPRICORN

saturn rules over restrictions/limitations, fears, responsibility, and might also show areas where we have trouble expressing ourselves. the planet's lessons are meant for us to grow and mature, its effects usually show rather late in life, or as we become adults. overcoming these fears or restrictions is the ultimate lesson that saturn is meant to teach us.

capricorn is a cardinal earth sign and rules the 10th house. aquarius was traditionally ruled by saturn, but nowadays it's ruled by uranus. capricorn's attributes include ambition, resourcefulness, determination, and discipline. they are hard workers and like to keep things in control. they are great planners, and organizers, and like to take care of things efficiently. as rational thinkers, they might have problems with overly emotional or sappy people, but they too have a side to them that craves connection and intimacy in some way. capricorns are often described as the "father" of the zodiac, and personal growth is one of their strongest assets if they allow it to happen, that is.

09 URANUS / AQUARIUS

uranus rules over technology, innovation, progression, novelty, and discovery. uranus moves slowly, so it is considered a generational planet since people born over multiple years can share the same uranus sign. its true influence can be seen in its house placement and whichever aspects it forms with our personal planets. it can show where we are the most forward and original, and eager to break traditions.

aquarius is a fixed air sign and rules the 11th house. its attributes include individualism, independence, inventiveness, idealism, and originality. these individuals like to do anything out of the norm, anything that may challenge the mainstream. they take pride in being unique and original, and they often are cool and detached, their objectivity and rationale help them in decision-making. they also can be very social if they want to, and in my experience, they are one of the best signs to have around to keep a group of people together.

08 NEPTUNE / PISCES

neptune rules over inspiration, dreams, intuition, and spirituality. it's a very creative planet that often rules over the "hidden" things in life and the subconscious. like uranus, neptune is a generational planet. in the chart, it shows the most effect in the house it sits, and in the aspects in makes with personal planets. whatever area in life it connects with, it attaches a dreamy and intuitive influence. natives with a lot of neptune influence tend to be creative, sensitive, in their own world and may have problems with recognizing "hidden" traits in themselves (depending which planet is under the influence of neptune).

pisces is a mutable water sign and rules the 12th house. its attributes include artistry, intuitiveness, compassion, and perceptiveness. living in their own world, pisces often can show where we are most sensitive and introspective. pisces and the 12th house can be a tricky placement to have, because as dreamy and romantic as these individuals can be, wherever the influence is in the chart, there might be something that is hidden in the subconscious for them. a pisces venus or venus in the 12th house person, for example, might have trouble identifying what they want in a relationship, or be unaware of their own or other's romantic feelings.

10 PLUTO / SCORPIO

pluto rules over transformation, rebirth, obsession, power, and control. it also takes part in ruling the subconscious, since it is also ruling over things "below the surface". pluto moves even slower than uranus and neptune, which is why it is also considered a generational planet. the position of pluto in the chart can show where we search for a deeper truth and meaning, and it indicates areas in life where we experience transformation, power struggles, and control issues.

scorpio is a fixed water sign and rules the 8th house. its attributes include possessiveness, passion, perceptiveness, creativity, determination, and resourcefulness. they are extremely loyal and committed and constantly search for deep connections and meanings in life. they may have to undergo a lot of transformations in life, meaning things ending for something new to begin. they don't do things halfway and often have the desire to gain some type of power. they are strategists, but passionate lovers who would go above and beyond for the people they love.
