ugh the second pacific rim makes me so sad because like. it's this insane amalgamation of what could've been, and im sure other people have said this before but whatever i just rewatched it and im in my feels rn so buckle up ig.

firstly - acghfshg they literally got rid of all of silly little things that made the first pacific rim *pacific rim*, except for the like two occasions when they didn't. like. soundtrack?? where did it go?? there was one (1) scene that had any sort of soundtrack usage the way the first movie did it, and it was a callback scene to the first movie. and the first pacrim was rife with ridiculous action-hero quips (think raleigh's bro saying "let's turn up the heat" in the middle of a fight) which pacrim 2 did try to do but it was so painfully a product of it's time bc dear god does it take itself way too seriously for any of the quips to land. not saying that john boyega didn't have his moments but like. they were the type of moments you'd find in any movie produced in that time.

secondly - charlie day and burn gorman put their whole actussies into that performance -- because goddamnit pacrim 2 was supposed to be an ode to hermann and newt's relationship -- only to get shafted at the last hour. like seriously their arc in pacrim 2 is so fucking heartbreaking, the two of them going from being so in tune with one another as they were at the end of pacrim 1 to drifting so far apart over ten years. and you can tell that they don't really want to believe that they don't really know each other anymore either, because like come *on* the sheer apprehensive hope on hermann's face when he first comes up to newt, and the way his face just *falls* when he asks "you won't help me?", and newt letting himself get dragged away and letting hermann go on even though he's clearly in a rush. and the way the both of them try to ignore how they've both changed over the past decade, because they have changed out of sync, and changed away from each other, and they both remind the other of what it used to be like, but it doesn't feel the same anymore because it isn't the same and just. ugh. that proverb about men and rivers. and like you can tell that what's left of newt is like. punching the prison walls of his brain, because of the sheer regret in his face when he has to hurt hermann, or the way he tries to avoid shit talking hermann when his boss clearly expects it of him. and obviously hermann having to see his friend disappear like that. going from hugging him outside the elevator because it was finally like the good old days again and they were on the same side and they would fight the bad guys and save the world again, to finding out that the person the world needed saving from was newt. and all that just to end the way it did. the both of them are entirely forgotten after hermann checks over the rocket plan and newt gets punched out.

and like obviously they were vying for a third movie because the set up for a newmann flavored reunion was literally right there, but like asfhjdg.

thirdly - mako's death??? that could've really been something, they could've used it to have like an actual lambert/jake moment, where they actually get to reconcile, but it might as well not have happened what with how the movie actually went about it.

bleh. im sure there's more to be said that im just forgetting about but whatever, it's way too late for me to care, and if any of the stuff ive said has been addressed in like interviews or smth, i wouldn't know about it as ive only seen the movies themselves and i don't particularly care to hunt down such footage.

Day 26 of NaNo final

I wrote the last chapter of my novel today. I wrote the ending

Tomorrow I'll write the epilogue.

I cried while writing this chapter so much.

Chapter 26: The 1

Last line: "he put the petal on they window sill"

I cried so much, I was sobbing and I had to take breaks bc I couldn't breathe.

I'm both excited about tomorrow but I'm also sad bc it's the end and I'm not ready for it. I'm still so sad about finishing this chapter. This is the end of the novel, and I'm just sitting here now, not wanting to close my computer. I wrote it since 12pm and now it's 5pm. I didn't even have breakfast, only tea but that's unimportant rn.

It's like when you finish reading a very good book and then you realize you have reached the end and now you're no longer there but your in the real world now.

I'm going to cry again holy shit.

I'm so emotional now. I finished my first book. This is it. I feel like I barely got to know it and now we are here. I'm so proud of this chapter and this novel and I'm scared to write the epilogue.

This chapter really made me emotional, I'm not over it. I'm so proud of how it turned out. And goddamnit here comes the tears.

I'm just emotional and I don't know what to say. Whatever I say will not be enough to show what I feel

HIStory’s ranked (no one asked, but here i go)

so i was sittin here, talkin to myself about the HIStory series’ and was like ‘hey, i should rank them’ (which i’ve seen a few other people do, but mines a lot more rambling than there’s because i can’t shut up lol) 

so here’s my views lol (ordered from worst to best, imo):

6) My Hero (HIStory1) -

probably universally acknowledged as the worst episode, and i’d be inclined to agree with the masses on this lol... not only is the tone and humour of this series so weird and disjointed, but the entire story line literally makes no sense lol?? it’s unclear who the audience should be rooting for (especially as it goes out of it’s way to paint our protagonist as really unlikable lol, not to mention the love interest is the dullest character ever conceived like ???), as well as this the ending feels completely unrelated and bizarre... 

i think this concept /could/ have worked if the guy the woman was inhabiting (which sounds weird without context, but like she’s dead lol) was somehow also inside his head? or if she got to see his memories or whatever & tries to adjust her personality to match the guy’s, causing love interest!dude to fall in love with the guy... (like i could go into more detail, i basically hav an entire au written in my head lol, but yh...)... that way, her letting go of him in the end would feel so much more well set up? especially if she was generally more understanding and likeable.. 

i think overall this series just fails in telling a decent story lol... & the cringe is even beyond what i can handle lol

5) Obsessed (HIStory1) -

people might be surprised to see this one so low down, especially since i know a lot of people really love this series (& if u do, no hate to u btw, ur allowed to like whatever u want idc), but i realllllly don’t like this series... like at all ...

the plot is weird anyway, which isnt inherently a bad thing, but then u add on the really bad couple and it’s just...... bad lol... like everything about their relationship is built on lies and deceit, and even more so than that it’s built on a lack of mutual respect and fundamental trust for each other! tall guy (i don’t know names soz) feigns memory loss in order to get closer to short guy (btw, the scenes with them being domestic were really sweet, & i firmly believe this could have been an alright series for the actors if the story line wasn’t so bad), short guy’s whole existence in that universe was a lie lol (like i know there’s no easy way to tell someone ‘lol well i’m technically from the future’ but still), then there’s the whole resolution at the end & it’s just so ??? frustrating lol!

nothing bugs me more than seeing conflict in relationships (on screen or irl) that could be solved simply by TALKING TO EACH OTHER GODDAMNIT & isnt lol... my other issue with this series is the fact tall guy 100% forced himself upon short guy in the tent & like we’re just supposed to accept it cos ?? he’s saying no and pushing away but actually he wants it because he loves tall guy ?? like fuck no i’m not accepting that lol! 

basically, bad & bizarre story & characters, & gross tropes just makes this hard for me to watch and enjoy lol... i think, like in my hero, this could’ve done with being a different story altogether lol... (maybe tall guy actually did lose his memory & he falls for short guy all on his own with no predatory intentions?? idk something like that)

4) Right or Wrong (HIStory2)

this one & my number 3 are very much tied tbh, but this one is just slightly lower just because i’m not as big into the couple as i know a lot of people are... & it’s not necessarily the age gap, cos i dont actually mind age gaps in pairings (just as long as the younger one isnt a minor, obv... and also i think any gap that’s 30+ years is a bit weird lol..).. i think my big problem with this is i dont really see why younger guy (again, i have no idea of any of these characters’ names lol) would fall for the older guy? like the older guy is obvs going thru some issues, and hasnt been taking care of himself or his kid properly because of them, but like we dont rly see a lot of why he’s a great guy? like we get the sense young guy is attracted to him, but like love is more than just thinkin they’re hot lol... idk lol this might just be me tbh i just couldnt see why he’d be interested lol

i did like the whole family side though, and showing how a man who was previously with a woman can still end up with a guy (bisexualityyyyy (or some variation of that thereupon)) is something you dont always see in media, so i thought that was pretty cool! (even if the ex-wife thing was kinda lame lol...) 

i think overall i see what this series was going for, and that it actually did an alright job in some parts... the biggest problem is that it’s kinda just forgettable lol... maybe that’s why people like obsessed so much lol? maybe it was a train wreck but ohh boy at least u wont forget it in a hurry lol!

3) Stay Away From Me (HIStory1) -

i’m a bit torn about this one, cos there are parts of it i actually really like (them going from rivals/enemies to being good friends to being more), and other parts i really didnt (the stereotypical squealing yaoi fangirl friend)... & tbh, i kinda wish this had just been a show about the budding friendship between the 2 guys... it almost feels too forced to me that they’re made to ‘fall in love’ when i actually think them both becoming less selfish and learning to respect each other as step brothers & friends is actually already a really great story (& i know that it doesnt fit with the whole ‘HIStory’ thing, but stories of platonic brotherhood/’bromance’ are just as important as gay representation... isnt a /substitute/ for representation, don’t get me wrong, but it’s always so beautiful to see decently portrayed non-toxic friendships between guys... ok this is a rant for another day tho shhh)

i think maybe why i like this one more than the other HIStory1′s is because kinda nothing happens lol... it’s not overly complex with weird unexplained magic things happening, it’s just a simple story lol... is it still tropey as hell? of course lol! but i think the ‘realism’ of the world really helps, and i def think this was incorporated more into HIStory 2, which i’m really glad about...

overall, this is a relatively harmless series & is actually quite sweet at times... the kiss is awkward as fuck tho (there, i said it lol...)... it suffers the same forgetability as right or wrong tho... 

2) Crossing the Line (/Boundary Crossing) (HIStory2) -

ok, so here’s a series i 100% love & totally agree with the hype around lol! i hav no interest in volleyball (or any sports tbh), but the way this show handles the friendships and dynamics between the characters is really well done, especially for a series that’s only 8 episodes long! i also really love that none of the characters really fall into any stereotypes (which is a great improvement from HIStory1 i can tell u lol), and are given the space to actually have some growth & nuance at times?! 

(nuance? in MY HIStory series?? it’s more likely than you think!)

the main couple have really amazing chemistry, and the way they get together doesnt feel too out of place or that it’s going to fast, it just sorta flows really nicely... even the side couple are pretty well done (though i wasnt that big into them on my first watch, just cos the whole overbearing older brother thing was kinda annoying... i liked them more as the series went on tho...)

i kinda dont have any major complaints? which is bizarre cos i always hav complaints about things lol... maybe my complaint would be that they all look way too old and attractive to be whatever teenage age they’re supposed to be lol... (but tbh that doesnt take anything away from the story so i’ll forgive them lol...)... i think maybe i wouldnt consider it my favourite because the story line didnt grab me like the number 1... but i really cant fault it in terms of what it delivers lol, legit such a well put together series!

1) Trapped (HIStory3) -

lol i think anyone who’s been following me for the past few months aren’t in the slightest bit surprised this is my number one... i just love it too much lol!

from the incredibly well written and well acted characters, to the interesting and engaging (even if a bit ridiculous) plot, to the beautifully told romance , it really has it all doesn’t it!!! & i think even if this wasnt an enemies to lovers thing (aka one of the most godtier of all fanfic tropes), there’s so many things going for this series that make it worth watching! i have a few complains about editing choices and a few bad trope plot points which were just unnecessary (plus the fact we missed out on a lot of background info on some major characters lol...), but like despite everything this series rly struck a chord with me deep down in my soul lol

i could go waaay more into detail (and maybe i will one day lol... tho not rn, i’m v tired), but the gist of the matter is: i really love trapped lol

(conclusion)

Even though i’ve complained quite a bit here, i am so grateful for the HIStory series’ for bringing really interesting, and a little mad, stories with gay characters and story lines, with a big emphasis on happy endings! there are so many lgbt stories/characters in things that end up dying or just have bad endings, which just sends this horrible message that lgbt people aren’t worthy of having happy endings, which is completely untrue! 

So i look forward to future HIStory’s, even if some of them are gonna be bad (& maybe none will live up to the trapped!shaped bullet firmly lodged in my heart lol)

sorry this took a wee while, i’ve had other projects i’ve been working on first but to anyone who has sent an ask they are coming! don’t worry! i have to get that word count for nano after all ;)

“Where’s Hawkeye and Fuery?” Roy shouted over the sound ofgunfire. A bullet clipped the top of the wall he was hiding behind, reboundingup into the air, the sound making him cringe and duck down further. His thighsburned thanks to his current position, cramping up as he tried to shiftslightly to get out from behind his cover.

But it was to no avail.

“Havoc!” he yelled, calling out to his comrade across fromhim on the other side of the alley.

“I don’t know, boss,” he cried a hint of desperation in histone. He looked helplessly back at his commanding officer, fear in his eyesthat the worst had happened to the two of them.

“The Lieutenant has been dealt with,” a smooth voice repliedas the gunfire stopped. Roy’s skin prickled, fear burning into every fibre ofhis being.

Lust.

No, Hawkeye wouldn’t have let that happen. She was a capablesoldier, the best out of their unit. All themen on his team were the best of the best, but Riza Hawkeye was in a leagueabove everyone.

She would come around that corner behind them, he was sureof it.

Something else glanced off the wall he was behind, veryloudly gouging out the stone on top. Roy’s head snapped up, seeing Lust’sfingers stretch over him. Glancing to his left, Roy watched as Havoc’s facepaled.

Then the gunfire began again, and the homunculus was gone.

Roy waited, popping off shots from his own weapon when hecould. The purposefully planted gunpowder by the homunculi limited what hecould do with his flame alchemy. Roy’s aim was pinpoint and expertly honed overtime, however he had no idea where it was located, if there was any loose onthe ground, or if there were any particles in the air.

A bullet bit into hisbicep, just grazing the skin enough so it broke. He cursed, throwing himselfback down into cover, his ass hitting the ground painfully as he landed,finally feeling the struggle of their fight begin to overwhelm them.

Hawkeye should have been providing covering fire at thispoint from behind them, along with Fuery, but they were nowhere to be seen.

They never arrived.

Roy grit his teeth in agitation, a growl escaping betweenhis lips.

Lust couldn’t be right. That bitch couldn’t have taken Riza out. Roy wouldn’t allow it.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t how the world worked.

*          *          *

Get up.

The command in her head was barked. Riza stirred with agrown, the rough concrete pressing into her cheek painfully.

Get up.

A hand found its way onto the ground painfully slowly,causing agony to shoot into her right side. Riza hissed in pain, the handfaltering as it tried to hold her weight. She crashed back down, elicitinganother groan.

Her second attempt was more successful. Wincing, she managedto pull herself into a half sitting position. An eye cracked open and the worldtipped. Riza felt her stomach lurch.

“F… Fue…” Squeezing her eyes closed against the pain in herside and her head, Riza tried to utter the name of her fallen comrade. Shejudged he was still breathing, his chest rising and falling faintly.

“Fuery,” she croaked. No response.

Riza shuffled over to the youngest member of their team. Herheart tore in her chest. No, no, no.He couldn’t die. Riza wouldn’t allow it. Not Fuery, anyone but Fuery. He wastoo good, the best out of all of them.

Get. Up.

Her body scraped roughly along the ground as she fought tothe boy’s side. He wasn’t a boy, but that was what it felt like to Riza. He wasso young… Too young to be fighting in this war of theirs.

Yet he did. They all did. For the future.

The dark patch of blood in his left side dripped onto theground, creating a pool. Riza shoved her hand atop of it, stemming the flow asbest she could.

They had been side by side when Lust arrived, skewering themboth with the same hand. Riza should have seen it coming, but when a homunculuswith speed like hers crept up on them, they hadn’t stood a chance.

Riza was alive, for now. So, she would do her best to tryand save her comrade.

Her friend.

“Hang in there Fuery,” Riza whispered, wincing again at thepain in her side. Her other hand was pressed against her own wound, but theblood trickled between her fingers with no end.

Whimpering against the pain, Riza bowed her head and prayedfor the first time in her life. Not for herself, but for Fuery.

*          *          *

“Boss! Through here!”

Roy rolled across the open area, coming to a stop besideHavoc. Breda was earnestly beckoning him as Havoc provided covering fire aroundthe corner.

Breda guided him to the alleyway where Fuery and Hawkeye hadbeen located at the start of the shootout. When Roy saw what awaited them inthat godforsaken alleyway, he stopped dead.

He now realised why there was blood on Breda’s uniform.

He hadn’t been hurt.

But they had.

Fuery was unconscious – dead? – on the ground, blood pouringfrom his left side. Hawkeye lay on her side next to him, a hand desperatelytrying to press against his wound. Her own wound – a matching one on her rightside – poured freely as well, creating a pool on the ground below.

No…

Roy lunged for them both, taking Riza’s wrist gently in his.He removed it from Fuery’s side, moving to grip her blood-soaked hand tightly.He weaved his fingers through hers, willing her to meet his gaze.

“It’s okay, we’ve got you,” he told her. He placed his freehand against Fuery’s side, barking at Breda to get back up here now. Riza gripped his hand tightly andRoy sighed in relief, glad to feel the strength behind her grip.

“Back up is on the way. I’ll go help Havoc with the suppressivefire, sir,” Breda announced, leaving before Roy could argue otherwise. Not thathe would have anyway. Havoc had been backed into the alleyway, firing back atthe men who had initiated the gun fight, thanks to a prompt from Lust. Roy knew he had heard her voice somewherebefore.

Goddamnit, he growledto himself.

“Lieutenant keep as much pressure on your wound as possible,”Roy ordered, his throat tightening. They shouldn’t be in the situation. How hadthis even happened?

“How… is Fuery?” she rasped. Roy’s head snapped towards her.Even though her grip was strong on his hand, her voice wasn’t. He readjustedthe grip on her hand, brushing his fingers over the pulse point on her wrist.It was difficult to feel, but he found it eventually. It was thready.

“He’s going to be okay. So are you, I just need you to holdon a little longer,” he begged. Hunched over both their bleeding forms, Roy hadnever felt so useless before. What good was he as a commanding officer if he couldn’tprotect his own?

“Lieutenant?” he asked, real fear creeping into his tone. “Lieutenant!”Her eyes fluttered closed, hand going limp in his.

*          *          *

Riza heard voices talking as she moved.

But that couldn’t be right. She was lying on her back, butthe ground beneath her was moving. Quickly. How was that possible? Cracking aneye open she saw bright, fluorescent lights.

“… stabbed. So was Sergeant Fuery.”

Roy…

She felt better knowing that he was here, that she wasn’t alone.

How was Fuery? Was he okay? Did he…?

“Sergeant Fuery is in surgery at the moment,” someone fromRiza’s left stated. “He’s lost a lost of blood. So has Lieutenant Hawkeye. Weare…”

Riza drifted off once more, unable to focus on anything.However, there was a sudden pressure on her hand, giving her fingers a quicksqueeze. She returned the gesture as best she could.

“I’m here,” Roy told her, his voice distant as the darknesscrept in again. “I’m not going anywhere.”

*          *          *

Riza lost a lot of blood.

Lust had almost nicked her lungs, but her freakish bladeshad narrowly avoided the one on the right. The doctor told the rest of the teamthe distance between the stab wound and Riza and Fuery’s lungs and it almostmade Roy vomit on the spot.

His poor subordinates.

They didn’t deserve this.

There was more medical jargon that Roy was just too tiredand too worried out of his mind to comprehend. All Roy could understand thoughwas that she hadn’t woken up yet and the constant beeping to his right from theheart monitor was now attuned to his very being. He had been in this room, byher side, for so long that he could detect any minor change in her heartbeat.He had learned the hard way to read it after she flatlined shortly after beingmoved here.

That had been the scariest moment of Roy’s life.

The reality of living life without Riza Hawkeye was rudely shovedin his face and he had been unprepared. The panic and grief overwhelmed him somuch, he cried silently when he returned to her bedside an hour afterwards, themachine beeping steadily once again.

So yes, he had memorised that rhythm as if his life dependedon it.

Head in his hands, he counted the beeps as his elbows restedon Riza’s bedside. Fuery was on the next bed over, by the window. He remainedvigilant over them both, the silent protector, until the rest of the team arrivedin an hour or so.

“Roy?” Riza croaked quietly.

His head snapped up, breathing halted as he dared to believethis was finally happening.

Two whole days he had been waiting for this moment.

Snapping one of her hands up, clasping both his hands aroundhers tightly, Roy kissed the tips of her cool fingers.

“You’re awake,” he replied in relief.

“What… What happened?”

“Lust stabbed you, do you remember that?”

Riza nodded, wincing as that movement aggravated something andcaused her pain. Her eyes widened momentarily.

“Where is Fuery? Is he okay?” Her voice broke in her hasteand worry.

Roy gave her hand a squeeze. “He’s okay. He’s in the bedright next to you. Fuery lost more blood than you did, apparently, so it may belonger until he wakes.”

“What happened with Lust –?”

“Let’s talk about this later, Riza.” Roy noted how hereyebrow arched at the use of her first name, but Roy didn’t care. “Please? Ijust got you back and the last thing I want to do is talk about work.”

“Okay,” she agreed with a quiet sigh.

“Thank you,” he breathed, bringing her fingers to his lipsonce more to kiss them. “How are you feeling?”

“Sore.”

“I thought… I thought you were gone when I rounded thatcorner,” Roy admitted, finally able to face the worry and anxiety that had madeits home in his chest for the past two days. Now that Riza was awake andtalking, he felt he could finally face it without breaking down. “But youfought it, to save Fuery.”

Riza nodded. “I couldn’t let him go out like that,” shewhispered, eyes finding his, willing him to understand. “He doesn’t deservethat.”

“No, he doesn’t. Thanks to you, he won’t.”

Riza smiled, closing her eyes as they drooped.

“And neither do you,” Roy added, quieter. He smirked when thateyebrow arched again. “Rest, Riza. We can talk more later.” He lifted a hand toher head, brushing her fringe from her face, his fingers ghosting over hercheek as they moved back to her hand. Riza made a soft sound as Roy touched her,and he wasn’t too proud to admit he enjoyed hearing it.

He just wished it hadn’t been when she was in a hospital bedafter fighting for her life.

“Will you stay?” she asked, eyes still closed.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he vowed, unable to resistpressing his lips to her forehead. “I promise. Get some rest.”

i did it... i discovered the secret to being popular... it’s making good cookies and giving them out. the cookies are really good though. i wasnt planning on taking half of the batch to work and giving them to whoever came into the bakery but they were so good i had to share them. im making a double batch rn so i can take more tomorrow and give them to whoever hasn’t had one yet. i’m gonna be employee of the year <3

i bought a stand mixer from goodwill. it’s not high end but it’ll do for me. i’m a serious baker now. it’s been weeks since i sat down and really drew anything, which sucks. it sucks that ive gotten used to that but soon i’ll be drawing again. maybe.

the store is going good. everyone loves it. i mean it’s a nice store and matt is really friendly and outgoing which is what you want from the guy who runs this sort of thing. so is his partner. im going to take up painting miniatures. i bought a set of xorn minis. i just need paint. also i got a gundam i need to build. this store is opening me up to a whole new world of dorky arts and crafts.

ive started looking at houses in the area in the price range that matt told me. there are a lot of old quirky homes, which i want. i dont know when we’ll be able to move. im not looking forward to quitting my job and i dont want to commute an hour to work lol. anyway i just want to own a house. a real house, not a townhouse or a condo. somewhere i can put a trampoline. my one unwavering dream ive held my whole life is owning a trampoline and im gonna do it goddamnit.

anyway the store isnt even a month old so we need time to see how things are gonna go... but it feels like our lives are finally moving forward and i dont want to lose that momentum.

Thoughts on Love Yourself: Tear

i’ve been listening to this album nonstop for over a week now, but I really want to organize some of my thoughts so Here We Go

(this is very long and i’m sorry)

Singularity:

This one has been out for a while and it was slow to grow on me, but now I really like it. it’s dark, sort of haunting, the kind of song that’s good for playing low at 3 am.

“감싸 보려하지만” especially sounds really good.

god this style of music suits taehyung so well. i also think this is definitely a song that is enhanced by it’s music video.

I just wanna talk for a sec about how Namjoon has had a hand in writing all three LY intros so far and how they’re all fuckin amazing

Fake Love:

I love the descending eerie “ding ding ding ding” in the background of this song. It just adds so much character.

whenever i sing this I try to sing “fake love” and then the fanchant “fake love” in the same verse lmao

“love you so bad, love you so bad, 널 위해 예쁜 거짓을 빚어내” is probably my favourite part of the song, it sound so good

also shoutout to namjoon who has two verses in this song and kills them both

jin sounds fantastic on the chorus. he really shines on this song- the way he sings “fake love” is just so pleasing to the ear.

the structure of this song is really weird. like, I don’t hate it, i actually kind of like it, but I wish they had pulled back for an instrumental break after “I just know why, it’s all fake love” and maybe built the song back up again with the “ding ding ding ding”s. it could have used the break in vocals imo.

The Truth Untold

I cried the first time I heard this song and it was 99% because of the rawness of these vocals.

god listen to jin on his first verse.

Jimin sounds beautiful on this song. jimin sounds beautiful always tbh but it’s especially noticeable here, and a lot of my favourite jimin moments from this album are on this track

“you know that I can’t show you me, give you me” i haven’t been fine since i first heard these lyrics

the connection between the first three songs (talk of masks, blooming flowers, hiding oneself) is pretty incredible tbh.

can you believe this is a steve aoki song? i can’t. well done to him for stepping outside the box.

ngl this is probably my least favourite song on the album, but I can still appreciate it for it’s lyrical cleverness and the frankly amazing flute.

“Us is the plural form of U” i just. really fuckin love namjoon.

I will say, i really like the pre-chorus on this song, the “난 맴돌고만 있어“ bit. it sounds so... adventurous? idk when i first heard this song I was driving through really heavy fog at 3:30 in the morning and i honestly felt like i’d been transported back to the dawn of the dinosaurs and was about to run into a triceratops. anyway, moving on.

Paradise

Okay lyrically, this song is one of my favourites on the album, but instrumentally, it just can’t hold my attention. there’s nothing about it that grabs me except for the “Stop running for nothing, my friend” near the end. as it is, i really love the lyrics, and it has a message that i’m clinging to right now.

“We deserve a life, 뭐가 크건 작건 그냥 너는 너잖어” (whether big or small, you are just you) namjoon is like dr seuss for 20 year olds i love it

“꿈이 없어도 괜찮아” thank u bts this is a message i need rn

yoongi often raps like he’s pulled his verses straight out of my own thoughts and this one is no different. it’s kind of comforting, honestly.

why are he and hoseok turning into the same person though. like on this song and a few others, they trade verses seamlessly and it’s frankly kind of eerie.

this entire album is so cohesive though.

너를 이루는 모든 언어는 이미 낙원에 i kind of really love this line. it’s gorgeous. “every language that makes you is already in paradise”.

Love Maze

I feel like I haven’t explored this song lyrically enough, but I do like it. I especially like how defiant it sounds. Where it’s placed on the album feels very fitting.

“Love ain't a business, rather like a fitness” “Love is a maze damn, but you is amaze” goddamnit namjoon why do i love these lyrics so much

“baby, just don’t give a damn” seokjin.

tbh that’s all i have to say

that really warped sound that becomes prominent in yoongi’s verse is so cool and adds so much character and atmosphere to the song

also the reference to paradise after the last song was actually called paradise is a nice touch and again, makes this album feel like a story with a beginning, a middle and an end.

i’m really sorry. I know the actual lyrics in hoseok’s verse are “와 있고” but it 100% sounds like “white girl” and that’s all I ever hear when i listen to the song.

it’s interesting to me that some people say this song is romantic, whereas others say it’s about the relationship between bts and their fans. what i love about bts’s lyrics is they often leave a lot of things up for interpretation, and i don’t think they’d be bothered by either viewpoint.

Magic Shop

alright this is one of my favourite songs on the album and i have a Lot to say

i have the lyrics to this song saved on my phone so that i can go and look at them whenever i’m feeling down

also if a song is ‘atmospheric’ enough, i associate colours/images with them in my head, and magic shop is one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever “seen”.

“So show me (I’ll show you)” is gonna be so fuckin powerful at concerts i can just tell

isn’t hoseok’s verse from his thank you in HYYH pt 1? ugh their minds

also hoseok sounds gorgeous here

the little “ey ey“s in yoongi’s verse please i love

and then there’s a reference to The Last here, but it’s written in a much gentler way and with a flip to it. god i love this song.

and then it goes back to hoseok rly quickly before the chorus again and have i mentioned how much i adore the way sope just fits together on this album

there’s something so calming about this song that just quiets my head for a few minutes

“you gave me the best of me, so you’ll give you the best of you” these are my favourite lyrics on the entire goddamn album, they’re just so impactful. a: a throwback to best of me, and b: a reminder to their fans that they should love themselves as much as they love bts (i’m trying, okay).

before we move on, I want to mention that Magic Shop marks a very obvious tonal shift in the album, the previous songs have all been sad, bitter, defiant, dark. there’s a consistent theme of hiding yourself behind a mask and worrying you won’t be loved (by others or yourself) if you take that mask off. in Magic Shop, the tone finally grows vulnerable, they talk of past fears, of using the “magic shop” to trade worries for happiness, and the rest of the album (until the outro) is going to be tonally more upbeat. this is not a coincidence.

Airplane Part 2

i’m not gonna lie, airplane was my least favourite song on hope world, but this? this is a fucking Jam.

okay jin and namjoon trading off lines is one of the most iconic parts of this entire album

and then yoongi and jimin trading lines? also iconic. the rap and vocal lines worked so well on this album and it truly shows on songs like this.

this song ends on what feels like an unfinished note. like the structure here is weird too. is there a bridge?? i don’t feel like there is???

Anpanman

I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH

i remember listening to this for the first time and just laughing through the whole thing bc i was so delighted

this is a song where taehyung sounds very much in his element, but in a different way from singularity

this just feels like classic bangtan to me and it makes me so happy

“keep ballin ballin, still bangtan” there is something about this line that makes me smile so much.

“눈 뜨니 hero but still in 미로” interesting. “still in a maze”- is this a reference to love maze or am i overthinking things.

also this song seems all light and fluffy on the outside until u remember that anpanman was a hero made of bread who gave parts of himself to others to make them happy and then the rapline all get a turn singing “i’m a new generation anpanman”.... i see. pls don’t do what the old generation anpanman did.

even though things have gotten tonally lighter there are still dark undertones here and that comes to a head later in the outro

i fucking love jk’s verse in this song, it might be my favourite of his on the entire album

i stan a band of Nerds

this is a very surface song that i enjoy jamming to in my car, but have no thoughts on it beyond that haha

i laugh every time one of them uses “bae” in a song bc it just sounds... off

“고민보다 Go Go” god i love it when they reference their older songs

this may not have been as surface as i thought it was upon closer examination of the lyrics. idk what i was expecting tbh like, this is bts.

“hope world, let’s go” that’s fantastic

tbh this might be one of my favourite hoseok verses on the album

wait so namjoon’s not saying “i wanna die right now”? i just now figured that out.

the last minute and a half of this song simply did not need to be there

Outro: Tear

i saw someone say that the instrumental for this belongs in a movie score and i 100% agree

namjoon goes the fuck off in this song like holy shit it’s been a while

and then he repeats “you’re my tear” three times, which alone isn’t interesting but is made interesting by the fact that when rapline comes together later, this bit is changed

okay this is my favourite hoseok verse on the album

and then again with the seamless transition to yoongi! god i’m curious as to why they decided to structure their verses like that, as far as I can remember they haven’t done this before and i really like this stylistic choice because they compliment each other so well.

“we thought we dreamed the same dream, but that dream has finally become a dream“ goddamn

this song sounds so raw, like the truth untold sounded raw too, but I really liked that this album had a vocal and a rap line track to showcase how music can sound vulnerable in different ways.

OKAY here it is, one of my absolute favourite pieces of wordplay (that i can understand) on the album

namjoon says “you’re my tear,” just like he did earlier. yoongi follows that up with “you’re my tear” but he uses the other pronunciation, changing the meaning to “you’re my tear (as in, tearing something).” then hoseok comes in and rhymes “fear” with namjoon’s pronunciation of tear. these are god tier (lmao i can wordplay too) lyrics my friends.

god i love yoongi’s verse so much. first the autotune, then the layering of autotune and his lower register (which he’s used so much more on this album and i adore it) like he switches things up so well and he’s such a versatile rapper i’m literally constantly floored by him.

and then there’s another really nice transition from namjoon to yoongi. what i like about bts’s rapline is that hoseok and yoongi sound really good together, but their higher rapping styles compliment namjoon’s deeper voice so well.

i just need you all to know that the first time i listened to this song i was driving at four am and it’s a good thing i was alone bc when yoongi started singing on the bridge i literally shrieked ‘fUCK’ and clapped a hand over my mouth

hoseok was a fuckin brilliant way to finish this album off, he gives this last verse the emotion and speed it needs and i love it. they’re all good at rapping over instrumental pieces like this but there’s something about hoseok (he did it in boy meets evil too) that just drives home the emotion.

Standout Things:

The cohesive storyline within a larger storyline

Love Yourself: Tear is almost what I would call a concept album, which is classified as an album that is "unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical.” (yes i got that from wikipedia, but the point stands because there’s definitely a concept here.) Love Yourself: Her also falls within the larger storyline of the Love Yourself era (the rise, fall and resolution of love) but I wouldn’t classify that as a concept album in the same way. Sure, a few of it’s songs dealt with the same sort of ideas, a love that was destined by fate, but a few others veered wildly off of that course. Love Yourself Tear remains steady on it’s concept of masks, pain, self love, giving too much to other people and how to be an idol and still love and be loved for your true self. There’s truly a story being told here and I love it.

The metaphors

Kpop love songs usually do nothing for me, but BTS has been getting a lot better at writing them lately, and what I really liked about the romantic songs on this album is that they were explored using metaphors and references to old stories. 134340 refers to both Pluto and Hades to make it’s point. Love Maze weaves a picture of a dark maze with no way out. The Truth Untold references the smeraldo flower. Even the non romantic songs tell a story in a roundabout way- Anpanman and Magic Shop are both for the fans, one is built around a superhero, the other a psychological technique used in therapy to change one’s way of thinking. The writing on this album has matured greatly and it really makes you think about what they’re saying.

Yoongi’s style experimentation

There were a couple times while listening to this album that I had to take a moment to go “wait, is that Yoongi?” I’m rather used to Yoongi rapping in a certain way. his style-   occasionally cocky, occasionally bitter, usually high toned, fast and emotional- is pretty distinct, and for the most part, he ditched that on this album in favour of a style that’s more mellowed out and lower pitched. he experimented with autotune, sound effects and even singing and i think his experimentation paid off, because he was one of the most memorable parts about this album for me.

Namjoon’s writing

Namjoon is a phenomenal lyricist, we all know that, but every single verse of his on this album stood out to me in some way or another. he had a hand in writing/producing every single song on this album, and i could really see his influence all over it. I just love words and well written lines, and there are so many lines on this album, particularly in Namjoon’s verses that just make me stop for a moment so I can just appreciate the beauty.

Magic Shop’s themes

This. Song.

First of all, the concept of the “magic shop” is such a cool idea for a song, and the way they incorporated it is actually really clever? It’s literally a therapeutic song, because it is a real psychological technique and they’re saying ‘we’ll be your happiness, just come to the “magic shop” and trade in your worries, you’ll be okay’. but, it goes further than “we’ll fix you!!!” with the line “You gave me the best of me, so you’ll give you the best of you”. Here, they encourage their fans to find the “best of themselves”. Basically, saying “love yourself as much as you’ve loved me”. god this is so good.

I have to mention that this song just sounds magical. There’s a calming, celestial vibe to it that A: fits with the rest of the album up until that point and B: acts as a bridge between the rather sad first half of the album and the more upbeat second half.

Bangtan’s chemistry

A minor problem I had with a few of BTS’s older albums was the disconnect between members. (not in person, just in their music). They were all singing on the same tracks, but it didn’t always feel very cohesive. Wings especially (although it remains my favourite Bangtan album) felt like a bunch of separate artists got together and decided to make an album (an amazing album and that style really worked for them at the time, but i digress). On this album, BTS finally feels like a band.  Sure, I praise both the rap and vocal line separately for the truth untold and outro tear, but I’ve never heard BTS sound so strong as a group. The rapping and the vocals felt seamless- there were so many times where they rapidly went back and forth between members, or shared lines, or harmonized beautifully. It rarely, if ever, felt like the vocal line ft: rapline, or the other way around. They blend the two so well these days, from Jungkook and Namjoon’s bit in Fake Love to Yoongi and Jimin during Airplane Part 2. I’m honestly delighted at how well this album works as a whole. Those eight years of living and working together have really paid off for them.

Overall: Love Yourself Tear is a beautiful piece of music that shows a more mature side of BTS. It’s flaws- lack of energy in the middle of the album, more autotune than their previous works, occasionally hard to follow song structure- are not even so much flaws as they are stylistic choices that I can respect. It is a phenomenal 2nd part of a 3 part act, and I eagerly await Love Yourself: Answer for the conclusion of this story, and to see where BTS will take their ever-evolving sound next.

Rating: 9/10.

After a few more rounds with Seb, you cuddle for a few minutes but then you get dressed and kick him out so you can finish wrapping the presents.

“But baaaaaby-”

“Sebastian Stan, no. I need to focus and you are too distracting. Go hang out with your best friend.”

He shrugs, walking away, “HEY GABE WHAT’S UP?”

“GODDAMNIT (Y/N),” Gabe yells from downstairs.

You grin to yourself and close the door, locking it before going back to your present wrapping. You wrap your present for Sebastian, which is a framed “I love you” in Romanian in your handwriting. You’d written it the night he proposed, and your mom had gotten it framed yesterday. You were hoping he’d love it, especially since you really wanted to hang it in his apartment once you moved in there. You’d also gotten him a stuffed plush of Dug from Up, one of his favorite Disney movies. You’d gotten Gabe a 3ft phone charger, since he pretty much spent every waking minute on his phone for work, and you’d bought your mom a martini shaker with Maleficent on it, knowing that she’d probably use it the second she opened it. Emily got a record player, which you’d picked along with every single Taylor Swift vinyl. The record for the “Red” album had been hard to find, but you knew she’d love it.

Once you’re done wrapping presents, you sit against the bed and think about your future with Sebastian. You’d been moving pretty fast, but you also had several years of history with him. You’d always dreamed of spending the rest of your life with him. You never wanted a big wedding, you just knew you wanted it to be with him. You’d always told him that you’d be fine with a Disney theme, just friends and family, and a simple white sundress. Of course you were still concerned about the press and his fans, but he’d promised that everything would be okay after the interview. You were too scared to check Instagram, so you’d just make him do it.

You bring all the presents downstairs and put them under the tree. You’re bent over, pushing them in as far as you could, when you feel Sebastian’s hands on you.

He leans over, whispering in your ear, “God, your ass looks good in these shorts.”

You stand and turn, glaring at him, “Seb, don’t do that when someone could walk in.”

He smirks, nibbling on your neck, “so, I can’t show how much I love you?”

“You can, just try to keep it in your pants around the family.”

He groans, pulling you on the couch on his lap, “so what do you wanna do for the rest of the day, darling?”

“Well… I was thinking you could check Instagram? I want to see if that interview actually did any good.”

He shrugs, taking his phone out his pocket. He opens Instagram, grinning at you. “Well, baby, it worked,” he says as he hands you his phone.

Okay, that interview was actually perfection.

WHY ARE Y’ALL SO CUTE?

I wish I had someone I’d been friends with for 15 years. Y’all are precious.

I know I called her a whore when I saw her the other day, but I actually really regret that.

“Whoa, Seb, that’s the girl from Universal who bitched me out.” You smile at him and he pulls you close, kissing you deeply. He kisses you back, smiling into the kiss. You’d always loved it when he did that, especially because it made you feel even more loved than he already did.

“See, darling, I told you it would work. They love you now. Just in case, though, I’m going to make sure you have your own security detail and everything so you’ll always be safe.”

“I don’t need private security, Sebby.” 

“Darling, I want you safe. No, I need you safe. I lost you once, and I’d never forgive myself if I lost you again. I’m getting you security. It’s not a discussion.” “Oooookay,” you say as your parents come in.

“Wow, get a room, you two. Oh wait, you already have one. WITH VERY THIN WALLS,” Gabe says with a wink as he moves to the TV, putting on The Polar Express.

“No way,” Seb says with a grin, “you guys still watch this?”

You roll your eyes, “of course we do, dummy. It’s a tradition.”

“Just because we’re dating doesn’t mean that this Christmas Eve is gonna be any different.” I leaned into Sebastian as we sat on the couch.

He chuckled. “Well, I mean everything is different. We’re dating so there’s that.”

“Pfft. Well, I think everyone knew that this was going to happen since we met. But, I mean, like we still have to watch The Polar Express and drink so much hot chocolate that we’re sick.”

He kissed my hair. “Baby, of course we’re gonna do all those things.”

Gabe walked into the room. “Hot chocolates anyone?”

Sebastian smiled wide. “Gabe! You know me so well man.”

Gabe laughed. “Well, you’ve been sitting on my couch for nine years so. You come to know a person.”

Sebastian rolled his eyes and smirked. “And I’ll continue to sit here as long as you have me.”

“Maybe start taking your shoes off and I’ll let you stay.”

Sebastian looked at me from the corner of his eyes. “Uhm, o-okay.”

“Gabe. Come on.” I cocked a brow at him.

“He’s known me for most of his life, you’d think he’d know when I was kidding.”

Sebastian shook his head. “I know when you’re kidding, Gabe.” He turned to me and sighed. “Wanna watch this movie in your room?”

Gabe turned away but twisted his head so he could make eye contact with us. “You better keep that fucking door open.”

My face turned five shades of red as Sebastian giggled. “Gabe, come on.”

Gabe smiled but then it faded just as fast. “Serious.”

He saluted him and nodded. “You got it.”

We laid on my bed, Sebastian’s arm behind my head and my body curled into his side as we watched the film. “This is the best Christmas movie ever.”

Sebastian snorted. “False.”

I sat up. “Excuse me?”

He shrugged. “I’ve seen better.”

“What do you mean you’ve seen better?”

He sat up and leaned against the headboard. “I mean, that The Polar Express is really good but I don’t know. I’m more a traditionalist, I guess. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

I laughed. “So, old fucking movies that scare the shit out of young children.”

He made a face. “They don’t scare children.”

“Bullshit. Gabe wouldn’t let me watch them because they’re so fucking traumatizing.”

He was sitting straight up now, his jaw dropped. “Serious?”

“Dixie Chick serious.”

Before I could add anything, he hopped over my body and was jogging down the stairs. “Gabe.”

I followed him down and stood off to the side, watching my boyfriend and step-father talk. “Yes, Sebastian?”

“Did you not let (y/n) watch Rudolph or Santa Claus is Coming to Town when she was a kid?”

He made a face, shaking his head. “Those movies are terrifying for a child.”

“What the hell? They are brilliant and classics!” His voice rose with each word.

Gabe chuckled. “You’re a fan then, yeah?” Sebastian cocked a brow at him and Gabe continued. “Well, sorry bud but she’s an adult now. She can watch whatever the hell she wants.”

Sebastian turned to me, eyeing my up and down. “Well, darling, I know what we’re doing all night long.”

I winked at him and turned to Gabe. “We’ll be safe.”

Gabe’s face went red and he shook his head. “Don’t even think about it.”

I placed a hand over my heart and smirked. “I meant we would use the good DVD player not the old one with the wires showing. God, Gabe.”

Sebastian’s eyes went wide and he smiled cutely at Gabe. “I’m sorry on her behalf.”

Gabe rolled his eyes. “Just keep the damn door open.”

You lay on Seb for the whole movie, and as usual, he spends most of it playing with your hair or blowing in your ear. After the movie ends, your mom makes her famous eggnog.

“Maaaan, Catherine, have I missed your ‘nog,” he says after taking a sip, “that’s the only reason I proposed to your daughter.

You elbow him and he winks, wrapping his arm around you. Gabe reads The Night Before Christmas, as he had every year since he’d met your mom, and you look around at your family, thinking about how lucky you were to have them and spend Christmas with them. You had no idea what you’d do if you couldn’t spend Christmas with your family. That had almost been the case last year but luckily, they found a way to come visit you in L.A. They all hated it, but you’d been scheduled to work on Christmas Eve and the 26th, so going to Orlando for the holidays hadn’t been an option.

You start drifting off as Gabe finishes the story and Sebastian carries you upstairs, setting you down on the bed. He strips down to his boxers and gets in with you, pulling you tight against his chest as he holds you.

“Darling?”

“Mmm?” You respond sleepily. “It’s after midnight.”

You open your eyes to meet his blue ones, which were less bright now, almost a soft baby blue.

“Merry Christmas, Sebastian.”

Merry Christmas, my angel.”
