Other Outlander Actors

Tonight I watched for the second time the 10-episode series of Recipes for Love and Murder. It airs on Acorn. I first watched it a few months ago, then I found the book, read it, and decided to rewatch it.

It stars Maria Doyle Kennedy, and is situated in the Union of South Africa. I haven't looked her up, but I suspect she is a native of that country.

I often why Sam and Cait, Roger and Brianna, and David Berry get all the publicity. I wonder if Outlander actors ever get any publicity. Or is Outlander just a show for Sam/Cait fans, and they don't pay attention to the rest of the series.

My goodness, Billy Boyd, who plays Neil Forbes, Jocasta's lawyer, was big in The Lord of the Rings. And Jocasta is played by Maria Doyle Kennedy. There are others who I recognize.

Acorn has so many British (Scottish, Welsh, Australian, New Zealanders, and English) actors - so many that I really like. Great murders mysteries, and Sam is supposed to show up in one of the Midsomer Murders episodes sometime in the 130+ 2-hour episodes over 25 seasons. I don't know when since it does not list it, but it is among the many things Sam has been in according to his webpage.

So, Maria Doyle Kennedy plays a woman name Tannie Maria (pronounced Tunney), a woman working in a newspaper office as an advice columnist plus a woman of many recipes. The book lists a few of them at the end of the book (also has an index of Afrikanner languages). And we get to watch her put the recipes together. I want to try some of them, but the main dish meals are all built around lamb, lamb knuckles, or mutton (and what is the difference), and I don't eat meat. Not even sure where to buy it. I don't think my grocery store has lamb, but I may have to ask them if it is available.

Since I will eat fish, and sometimes (rarely, but sometimes) chicken, maybe I can substitute. She uses a large number of spices and herbs. The curry recipe sounds particularly delicious - just don't know how well it would fit with meat other than lamb.

Since my days of managing a merchant seaman's bar, I have made an effort to say "thank you" in nearly 100 languages, and Afrikanner was one of them (dankie, pronounced dankey A). Oh yeah, I bet you can figure out what "fok" is.

I also have a really good Scots recipes book, and I use it. I particularly like the cullen skink, fix it fairly often (uses fish, potatoes, onions, several herbs, and milk - makes a really delicious soup), and kailkenny (in Irish, colcannon), a veg dish using mash and fried cabbage, mixed, with butter (not marg). There is even a recipe using haggis, but it is pre-pared haggis, not one you have to make up yourself.

So if you like "Jocasta" and can get Acorn on your TV, give that one a try. She is a most beautiful woman, a good actress, and the recipes she shows in the episodes look really delicious. Next time around, I am going to write really fast and get the many ingredients down so I can try some not in the book.

Other Scots actors I like are Denis Lawson, Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, and too many to mention.

There is more to life and pleasure than just Jamie - besides which it is really Sam Heughan I most like.

3. Favorite fandom? You mean I have to choose between Dragon Age and Mass Effect?! My friend, I cannot. That's like asking me to choose between fantasy or sci fi, Cullen or Kaidan; I'd rather have both. 😈

4. Favorite pairing? Wait - just one? Kaidan/femShep is my bias, just like Cullen/fTrevelyan and Reyes/fRyder, but I've recently developed some new obsessions thanks to the sender of this ask. 😉 I totally blame @vorchagirl for my newfound obsession with James Vega and Harry Carlyle.

6. Favorite fic (or one of them)? I'm just getting back into reading fanfic and it's still slow-going because my focus is all over the place, but I have a ton of different AO3 tabs open on my phone that I read when I have the time. One of those is Liquor That Tastes Like Sunshine by @ashenlavellan which I'm really enjoying so far.

10. Favorite trope/element/scenario in fic? Slow burn. With all the added awkwardness, hesitant touches, will-they-won't-they mutual pining, getting into close quarters without a way to ignore the unsaid feelings hanging in the air... Sigh.

23. Biggest turn-offs in fic? Writing style. The story could be a masterwork, but if the writing style isn't to my tastes, I click away real fast. Also, if a character doesn't talk like they do in the source material and uses different words and phrasing or just sounds wrong.

24. Do you have any dirty kinks that you’re ashamed of? Not that I am currently aware of. I'm pretty openminded when it comes to sex and kinks. Back when I was less depressed and more creative, I wrote all kinds of kinky smut.

oh boy, anon would be FUMING if they knew how many of my dreams made it into my books. i've had whole books inspired by them.

Hey, I’m the twilight dream anon. I don’t actually care if books and plots come from dreams. People have written some great stuff based on dreams or random thoughts.

My issue with Twilight coming from a dream is rooted in the author’s religious beliefs. LDS is not female-friendly at all and I see the issues in Twilight (the emotional abuse of Bella, the toxic masculinity/patriarchy represented by the vampires, the Edward-Jacob rivalry which is essentially based on how each boy feels they can protect Bella better, the culty Cullens, the grooming of Bella) as a manifestation of many LDS core beliefs.

I mean, let’s not get into how the character of Carlyle is a metaphor for the church’s teachings of missionary work under the leadership of a prophet. Or how Jacob’s imprinting on baby Reneesme is pedophilia but wait, it’s okay because it comes from Native American mythology - yay diversity!

My comment that Twilight comes from a dream is more or less a comment that Stephenie Meyer even dreams in LDS philosophy and somehow she’s managed to brainwash an entire generation of girls into thinking the pinnacle of true love is someone who treats you badly but that okay because he can give you immortal life…just like the LDS promises immortal life through their faith. Joseph Smith couldn’t have done it better himself.

And finally. What kind of effing name is Reneesme? That choices deserves all the hate it got. (And still gets.)

Hi!!!! You're absolutely right. I never made it through the books and after watching the movies like once, I've never watched it again. 50 Shades was the same for me, but that was twi fanfic (EL James is a lovely person but her books aren't for me)

I had no idea she was Mormon or how it connected to her books so this was really interesting! I'd actually love to hear more about it.

You know what bothers me the most about Twilight?? The fact that the Cullens decided to stay in high school. I get that it’s a teen romance novel thing, but going to college for forever seems much more fun.

1) learn different subjects instead of the 5 that the education system teaches you in high school

2) go to college events and parties- not just mope around your glass house or whatever they do

3) professors probably won’t remember you so it’ll be harder for you to be caught being immortal

4) can do research and maybe even help people through that

5) not be in FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL

In conclusion, the Cullens fucked up.

Last tv show/ movie: The Marvels. Can I just say that I loved seeing all these kick-ass women in one movie? And Iman Vellani is just a gem. Kamala made me laugh so much. :D

Fave ships: My reintegration into fandom began with Dragon Age and Cullen/fTrevelyan and has further evolved since to include Dorian/mTrevelyan, Alistair/fWarden and Fenris/fHawke. My favorites from Mass Effect are Kaidan/femShep, Thane/femShep, Reyes/fRyder and Jaal/fRyder but now that I've been exposed to more, I and my characters are seeing James Vega and Harry Carlyle in a different light. 😏

Favorite color: Judging by the changes in my interior lately... Soft pink.

Favorite food: I have issues with food. I've always been an incredibly picky eater and even though I'm not afraid anymore to try new things, I never really had a favorite dish. If you asked me what I like to eat? Sandwiches. And potato dishes. 😬

Spicy/sweet/savory? Spicy. I probably wouldn't survive it, but I'd love to do the Hot Ones challenge.

We know that Rosalie is attached to her human name--it’s why she insists on being a Hale rather than a Cullen--but I wonder if Carlisle isn’t super attached to his, too.  I mean, Edward, Esme and Rosalie all knew him as “Dr. Cullen” in their human lives, he’s apparently always been using that name.  So when he eventually realizes he has to change it up, I feel like he’s gonna have a hard time letting it go. He tries to keep it, somehow. And that’s how they end up being “The Carr family” the next time they move, and he’s their foster dad, Dr. Lyle Carr.
