As we approach the release date of Systems Collapse, the much-anticipated newest entry to the series, new readers might wonder: where should I get started?

Here's an overview of books in the series so far, which are available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook. The series is snappily written and easy to blow through: the majority of the series is novellas, with two free supplementary short stories, one full-length novel, and another novel to come. The novella quartet:

#1. All Systems Red, published May 2017.

I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module, but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don’t know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

#2. Artificial Condition, published May 2018.

It has a dark past—one in which a number of humans were killed. [...] But Murderbot has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don’t want to know what the “A” stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

#3. Rogue Protcol, published August 2018.

The reason I was wandering free and Dr. Mensah was on the news was because GrayCris had been willing to kill a whole bunch of helpless human researchers for exclusive access to alien remnants... If Dr. Mensah had proof of that, the investigation against GrayCris would get a lot more interesting. Maybe so interesting that the journalists would forget all about that stray SecUnit. Getting proof wouldn’t be hard, I thought. Who knew being a heartless killing machine would present so many moral dilemmas? Sci-fi’s favorite antisocial A.I. is back on a mission.

#4. Exit Strategy, published October 2018.

Murderbot wasn’t programmed to care. So, its decision to help the only human who ever showed it respect must be a system glitch, right? Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah—its former owner (protector? friend?)—submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit. But who’s going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue? And what will become of it when it’s caught?

I’m usually alone in my head, and that’s where 90 plus percent of my problems are. When Murderbot's human associates (not friends, never friends) are captured and another not-friend from its past requires urgent assistance, Murderbot must choose between inertia and drastic action. Drastic action it is, then.

#6. Fugitive Telemetry, published April 2021.

Murderbot simply wants to binge-watch its favorite soap operas and protect its friends from being killed by the powerful and nefarious corporation they've angered. But then a human corpse turns up on Preservation Station, and Murderbot leaps to action with security forces to help to solve the murder. "There's a scene in "Network Effect" where Murderbot shows Thiago a video clip of an incident when it stopped an assassination attempt on Dr. Mensah, with the help of Preservation Station Security. In the clip, Murderbot has a good working relationship with the Station Security people.  So I wanted to go back in the timeline a little and show how Murderbot's relationship with those characters developed, the rocky start when Murderbot was still getting acclimated to the station, and how the people on the station got acclimated to Murderbot. #7. System Collapse, release date November 2023.

Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly-colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there’s an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can’t have the planet, they’re sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there’s something wrong with Murderbot; it isn’t running within normal operational parameters. ART’s crew and the humans from Preservation are doing everything they can to protect the colonists, but with Barish-Estranza’s SecUnit-heavy persuasion teams, they’re going to have to hope Murderbot figures out what’s wrong with itself, and fast!

THE SHORT STORIES

There are two short stories officially connected to the Murderbot Diaries universe, both of which can be found for free online.

Compulsory — published 2018, by Wired.com as part of "The Future of Work" collection. Takes place prior to All Systems Red, sometime after Murderbot has hacked its governor module.

Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory — originally given free with preorders of Network Effect. Takes place after Exit Strategy, from Mensah's point of view, as she grapples with post-traumatic stress and Murderbot's refugee status on Preservation.

There's some debate on whether book 6 should be read in publication order or chronological order, but where to start the series is easy: start with All Systems Red and continue with the novella quartet, and if the adventures of the sarcastic, anxious, hypercompetent Murderbot capture your imagination, this post can help you decide where to go from there.

Digital Stars 2022: Vibes Rundown

I've finally finished listening to the entire thing! Hard to call this a proper review since I've only listened in once, so it's a Vibes Rundown™ instead. 9 guests, 6+ hours, and a ton of bangers ahead. (subject to edits as I figure out who the original song(s) belong to and give proper credits)

Set 1: Oddrella

We open with a pretty chill set, and a lot of underrated and surprisingly diverse list of Vocaloid songs. Definitely a great way to set the stage for a Vocaloid-centric event. Beyond their Zombee remix on the DS2022 album, this is my first time listening to Oddrella, and I left with a good impression.

Personal Notes: I can't question the taste of someone who likes DATEKEN, Kikuo, Giga and nakano4 (I think? Haven't double-checked), and I can't question the skill of someone who managed to string their songs together into a cohesive set. The me of 7-8 years ago would've had the time of their lives with this set for sure.

Set 2: Nyankobrq

Picked up where Oddrella left off in vibes and ramps it up. Probably the set with the biggest amount of non-Vocaloid songs in the event, so not much for me to comment on here (not because it was bad for sure).

Personal Notes: Putting Fly to night, tonight and Giga's Electric Angel remix back-to-back should be banned, I could've died.

Set 3: Alpaca

*Bee Movie voice* You like trance? A dance-y first half gives way to trance on the second half, while keeping up the high energy.

Personal Notes: I enjoy VocaTrance, so my only thoughts are :) Trance Good :)

Set 4: gaburyu

Coming in strong with a Rolling Girl remix and keeping it up. A variety of electronic music, and a decent amount from gaburyu's own considerable discography.

Personal Notes: Hollow is in! The song that introduced me to him (yeah yeah, late to the party and all) and still one of my faves. Nice to see it featured here.

Set 5: Yoshihisa Hirata

Time to chill out with some RnB, city pop, and laid back jazzy songs. Smooth pianos, and an interesting mix of Miku and human vocals.

Personal Notes: The first half was full of songs with Miku on the melody and a human vocalist rapping. They were all unknown to me, but I'm going to enjoy hunting them down later. Also, I'd never thought I'd hear NioP's Yosogoto again, especially in an event like this. That song was foundational to introducing jazz for my baby Vocaloid listener self.

Set 6: NUU$HI

Ramping up the energy again with electrohouse, dubstep, and is that riddim I hear? Plenty of instrumental tracks in this one.

Personal Notes: Having Tsumi to Batsu and To my Husband Android be one of the few Vocaloid tracks playing is incredibly based.

Set 7: UtsuP

One of the most awaited sets of the event, and for good reason: UtsuP's DJing abilities is as good as the metal he's known for. A Vocaloid heavy set with equally heavy drops and metal. Not gonna lie, listening to this after 4 hours of listening was kinda tough, I'm glad my first listen-though was after a couple hours break.

Personal Notes: Those Hyper Reality Show, Vermin and Leia remixes was sick, hope it releases somewhere. The nearly-unedited Corpse Attack!! was also great, but that's just me liking the song.

Set 8: hirihiri

Despite heavily featuring Porter Robinson and Madeon, the set feels heavy and loud. Maybe it's the hyperpop mixed in.

Personal Notes: Congratulations for Vocaloid Become Human (hirihiri remix) for being the first song being played twice in this event! Deserved tbh, it's my favorite remix in the album. Also, obligatory World is Mine.

Set 9 : colate

The event closes off with a set from another eagerly awaited producer. Sweet, fluffy pop and disco. The only 100% Vocaloid set in the event.

Personal Notes: The two siinamota songs (I forgot what the other one was called) really gave the feels. Also congratulations to Finder for being the second song played twice in this event.

So me : I am 163-65cm I have blue-grey eyes that change with the light (it can go from a very light blue to a dark blue mixed with gray. My friends think it looks like a rough sea lol). I have dark brown hair, almost black, which reaches my chest. I sometimes have pimples that appear on my face. I have pretty strong? thighs and calves that complexes me a little.

I did classical and contemporary dance, gym, horseback riding and judo for a long time but I had to stop because of a knee problem. I do theater. I like to read, write, listen to music, dance and draw (even if I draw very badly lol). I am fascinated by history and ancient times, I love fashion and fantasy.

I am an introvert but sometimes I become extroverted (but not long) I am clumsy and I often make people laugh because of that. I like to laugh. I'm a little shy. For a long time I lacked self-confidence but it's much better even if it's still not perfect. My friends tell me that I am often too hard on myself, that I am too perfectionist when it only concerns me. I like to eat and I often make sweet eyes to my friends so that they pass me a bit when they eat. I'm quite sensitive. Often when I'm angry I cry what upsets me even more because I've always been afraid that I would be found weak even if they keep telling me that it's false and that I have great mental strength.

I am patient and often too kind for my own good. I tend to put the happiness of others before mine. I don't like to cook. I learned to play the guitar but I forgot everything. I love watching movies and series but I still love being able to discuss them with the people I care about.

I am often lazy, too honest and I have a fairly fast repartee.

I'm quite homey but I like to party. I don't really have a dress style I can wear a black oversized outfit one day and a closer to the body and colorful outfit the next day. My favorite color is blue. I'm quite tactile and I love cuddling. I can sometimes be weird.

At first glance I can seem very cold. I also seem younger than my age, which is quite annoying because I am often given my identity card to check my age…

In resume, I am a person who despite appearances laughs and smiles a lot. I am very affectionate and I often tease people close to me.

After that, you should narrow down your goals so that you have a clear picture of how your life will be different once you reach your weight loss goals. What will you gain from this experience? What are you going to do differently from now on? What makes you unique from the rest? You must be able to see the finished product with all of its benefits clearly in your mind. The movie or daydream you create for yourself after losing weight will become a permanent part of your mental landscape. After a few days of doing this, you'll be able to see yourself succeeding at least once a day.

Keeping track of everything you do that helps or hinders your weight loss plan is the next step. So, for example, if you were able to resist the temptation of donuts for breakfast, record it. Does my current method of doing things lead me to the results that I truly desire? Will my mental movie of my new life come to fruition as I envision it?

It's great if the answer is yes. It's highly unlikely that you'll need to read any further. You'll get there if you just keep doing what you're doing. If the answer is no, continue reading.

If the answer to this question is "no," congratulations! You've succeeded in inducing some internal conflict in your mind. Uncomfortable as it may be, this sensation is an indicator that you need to make some alterations in your life. It's easy to keep up our bad habits if we don't go through this period of cognitive dissonance. Unless they are in excruciating discomfort, most people will not make significant alterations to their daily routines.

One of the first questions you should ask yourself if you aren't making any progress toward your goal is: How much do you want it? To succeed in your weight-loss and fitness endeavors, you must have a strong motivation to do the work needed.

Another possibility is that you haven't had a solid strategy for losing weight up until now. Without a well-thought-out strategy, you'll be able to easily sabotage your efforts. When we're fighting our brain's conditioning, willpower can only get us so far.

Among the many possibilities, you'll find some hints, either hidden or obvious, in the previous list of your behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Your weight loss success is dependent on what you do, think, and feel in place of what you should be doing. You should ask yourself: What are you willing to give up in order to achieve your weight loss goals?

When you realize that you want more than just to lose weight, you'll need to make some decisions. Is there something you want more than just a slimmer waistline? This could be an opportunity to give up on losing weight and simply enjoy doing, having, or obtaining whatever it is you're looking for. A new goal to work toward will then be in place for you.

Another option is to make a conscious decision to focus on losing weight. Your personal areas of temptation should be specifically targeted in your neural reconditioning program, which I'll explain in detail later.

The final option is to come up with a compromise that allows you to get some of what you want from each of the options. When I was reading a magazine the other day, I came across an example of a movie star who restricts her carbohydrate intake six days a week but indulges in unlimited amounts of pizza on Sundays. I think that's a reasonable middle ground to aim for.

You must ask yourself, "Am I willing to devote the time and effort necessary for my plan's success?"

Creating a Strategy

When making a plan, there are a number of factors to consider. In order to achieve your weight loss goals, you must take into account your most pressing needs and incorporate strategies to meet those needs. If you're looking for love and belonging, you may want a coworker to help you along the way. If your primary concern is to ensure your own survival, you'll want to design your home in such a way that you can rest easy.

If you want to gain more power, you should consider making losing weight a competition. In order to achieve your most important weight loss goal of freedom, you must start thinking about and including in your weight loss plan everything that will help you achieve this. If your primary desire is to have fun, then you must find a way to make weight loss enjoyable for you.

The next step is to create weight loss affirmations that help you stay motivated. Negative thoughts that prevent you from achieving your goals must be reprogrammed. Even if you aren't aware of these thoughts, they are preventing your success.

Affirmations are statements that are positive, present, and time-sensitive. When it comes to telling the truth, our brains don't know the difference. Over time, your brain will begin to believe a particular thought, value or belief that you repeatedly affirm in your mind. Because of this, the brain will mobilize all of its powerful resources to bring about the reality you believe in.

Affirmations can be as many or as few as you want to help you achieve your goals. Any positive thoughts or affirmations you can think of to help you achieve your goals can be used to help you along the way. There is no limit to the number of affirmations you can include in your daily routine. You can spend as little or as much time with them as you like each day, with a minimum of five minutes each time you see them. Affirmations should be recited twice a day: once when you first wake up and once before you go to bed.

When repeating your affirmation aloud, make sure to look yourself straight in the eyes. Of course, a mirror can be used to accomplish this. Look at yourself in the mirror, as if you were challenging the person staring back at you to deny the veracity of your claims. Two times a day, repeat your affirmations with conviction and passion. A third time around lunch would be even better.

Your food triggers—those things that cause you to overindulge or consume food when you're not hungry—need to be examined next.

Many people have turned to unhealthy food substitutes in order to satisfy their hunger pangs. Whether we're depressed or stressed or bored or angry or scared; we eat when we feel these emotions. Emotions can be used as a trigger to eat for a variety of reasons by different people. In addition, it's not like we're swiping through the fridge for an apple or some carrots! No! We can't decide whether to eat more chocolate or chips. These are not part of the 5th food group!

A food trigger can be triggered by a variety of factors, including our moods. Eating can be a way to meet new people. We'll eat just because it's free. When we eat, it's not always because we're hungry. Eating is a coping mechanism for many of us. We eat when the clock tells us to, but we also eat when we feel like it.

We may also eat even if we don't feel like it because we paid for it. It was made clear to us that we were expected to thoroughly clean our plates and avoid wasting food. In order to avoid throwing away good food because we don't like leftovers, we tell ourselves that we don't have enough to save or that it's just not worth saving because we don't want to waste it.

If you want to succeed in your new weight loss plan, you must change your perspective on food. When you're feeling down, food isn't the first thing you turn to for comfort. Food is nothing more than a source of energy for your body. Unless your body tells you otherwise, you should only eat when your stomach grumbles and your eyes water.

Make a point of being aware of your weight loss activities. A lot of information can be gained by paying attention to and recording the events and circumstances that cause you to overeat.

At First Sight

It’s been a while since I’ve posted one of these blurbs, and I really liked this one. It’s got some OCs of mine that I created to be Wooley’s batchmates. More information on them can be found below the cut

Wooley groaned as the Corrie tugged his arms behind him and pulled out a set of binders. He wasn't even drunk or involved this time. He just happened to be nearby when Crys set off a bunch of glitter bombs (Wooley was pretty sure he got them from Torrent) and of course the Corrie assumed he was a part of it. Or just wanted the bragging rights among their batchmates that he got to throw Wooley into the drunk tank.

"Corin, you are a slimy bastard," he groaned. "I didn't do anything."

"Hmm, that's what you say. But you see, you Ghosts rarely do stuff by yourself. Therefore, that kid Jek is arresting had an accomplice. The closest Ghost was you," Corin said smugly.

Wooley sighed.

"I actually hate you right now."

"Don't stay things you don't mean, Wooley dearest," Corin sang.

"Ratio is my favorite now."

"Blasphemy! I have always been your favorite batchmate," Corin protested.

"Ratio isn’t currently arresting me for something I didn't do and didn't know anything about."

"If you want to lie, you need to get better at hiding your tells."

"I've been working on that," another vod's voice called. Wooley sighed. He knew that voice very well. And of course Lovely just had to happen by.

Corin closed the binders on his wrists and turned Wooley towards the Guard speeder where Lovely was leaning against the side.

And then they stopped.

Wooley glanced behind and couldn't help but grin. Oh. Oh that was delightful blackmail material.

Corin stood there, his bucket clipped to his belt so his curly blue hair went in every direction as it attempted to escape its ponytail. And he stood, absolutely dumbstruck, and stared at Lovely. His brother, the most flirtatious of the lot of them, was stunned silent by a pretty face.

Discreetly, Wooley swiped the keys off of Corin's belt and walked towards the speeder, Corin's hand sliding off of his back. He fiddled with the binders for a moment and then slipped them off and tossed them into the Guard speeder. He put his bucket back on and immediately took several holos of Corin's face.

"Is there a problem?" Lovely asked, walking towards Corin as he waved Wooley away behind his back.

"Puh uh problem? No, there's no problem," Corin stammered. "I'm Corin."

"Nice to meet you, Corin," Lovely answered. "I'm Lovely."

"You definitely are."

Wooley almost gave his escape away with a snort as he listened to his normally suave brother blunder through an introduction. He couldn't wait to show this to Mal and Ama. They would absolutely never let Corin live this down. Cyan would get a kick out of it, too.

As Wooley hopped into a speeder heading to the GAR barracks, specifically for the clones, he sent the holo to the Crimson groupchat.

<Wooley: Look at him. He saw one of my squaddies and made this face!>

<Ama: NO WAY!!! I DON'T BELIEVE IT!!!!>

<Ratio: Ha! Thank you Wooley. I am definitely saving that to get back at him for the prank he pulled last week.>

<Mal: That was Ama. But it's about time Corin got a taste of his own medicine.>

<Cyan: Lovely is really nice. Corin at least has good taste. If Lovely falls for him, though, I'm gonna have to question his taste.>

<Corin: WOOLEY YOU SON OF A BANTHA WHORE!!!>

Wooley just cackled.

Wooley’s Batch (AKA Crimson Batch)

Mal: The Oldest TM. He is gentle and kind and gives the absolute best hugs. He’s the kind of person you go to for a nice long cuddle with ice cream, blanket forts, and a movie to feel better after a bad day. He’s also got great advice. He was one of the five members of Crimson Batch that were sent to Coruscant as part of the Coruscant Guard.

Kye: He can be a bit of a grump. He is also the easiest to get with a prank, which the others do quite frequently. Kye also has the most infectious laugh, if you can get him to let loose. He’s also a Coruscant Guard.

Ratio: Ratio is happiest if he has a fully-charged datapad, a hot cup of caf, and a vod’ika curled up against him (usually Ama). Force save anyone who brings him a problem to solve before he’s had his morning caf, though. He likes to tease and joke around and holds trivia nights, which can range from fun little quizzes, to him info-dumping with his batchmates. He is also a Coruscant Guard.

Corin: Corin is a notorious flirt. He will flirt with anyone that he can get away with. Charming to the extreme and with a fun sense of humor to boot, he is very popular both within the Guard and with any Battalions on leave. He is also a massive troll. Wooley and Corin were really close before they were deployed and Wooley learned how to flirt from Corin. He fell head over heels for Lovely the very first time he saw him, and spent the rest of the war trying to come up with ways to woo Lovely. (Lovely is demi, so it took a bit of time and a lot of patience, but he was wooed.) Corin is a member of the Coruscant Guard.

Talla: He is very protective. He was one of the batchmates that was assigned to Commander Rill’s Company (also an oc of mine) along with Wooley, Cyan, Kita, and Maie. When they were captured by Separatists, Talla was sold to Trandoshans along with Kita and Maie. He protected them and they managed to survive until they were later rescued (this is soft! I couldn’t kill them. I just couldn’t). He’s fairly paranoid and warms up to strangers very slowly and rarely goes anywhere without his armor and several weapons.

Cyan: Cyan was rescued by the 212th along with Wooley (and Lovely and a few others, but I’m not focusing on them now). He’s really reserved and quiet, but will absolutely swear like a sailor with the people he’s closest to. He becomes really close with Miggs (a fellow trooper in the 212th) and they eventually say the riduurok after Miggs lost his leg on Umbara. They will eventually adopt a squad of cadets and raise them together.

Kita: Kita is pretty friendly and adapts well to being around other people. At least better than Talla. He was also rescued with Talla and Maie. He likes making friends and is definitely nowhere near as paranoid as Talla.

Maie: Maie is considered “Babey TM”. He’s got the Sad Tooka Eyes (which Wooley learned from him and used to great effect on the 212th). He is a little quiet and tends to stick close with the people he knows the best but is also interested in making new friends. He really wants to open a ranch or farm and just spend time out in nature when he doesn’t have to worry about being hunted.

And finally . . . 

Ama: Ama is the Youngest TM. Always. He loves practical jokes and making people laugh. He has probably perfected several comedy routines at this point and performs them every time he’s at 79′s with a new Company on leave. Loves sitting with Ratio and they like planning pranks together. Kye is their usual victim, but they also target the others as well. He was also sent to Coruscant as a Coruscant Guard.

Alrightttt, I’m on a roll so we’re going onto chappy five 🥳🥳🥳😎😎

I know the movies made the Capitol — re: basically only Effie and maybe Caesar — have those ridiculous made up accents but .... I actually feel like the description of the Capitol accent in the book is supposed to be like the Kardashians or Paris Hilton’s voice. 🤷🏼‍♀️

“Why do these people speak in such a high pitch? Why do their jaws barely open when they talk? Why do the ends of their sentences go up as if they're asking a question? Odd vowels, clipped words, and always a hiss on the letter s. no wonder it's impossible not to mimic them.” Like this is a pretty good description of how Kim Kardashian and her sisters talk. And Suzzy C did say she was inspired by the juxtaposition between war news footage and ridiculous reality television shows so... I think my theory of the Capitol all talking like they’re on the Real Housewives of LA is pretty valid.

I like how Katniss says her stylist “apparently has no interest in seeing her until the prep team has addressed obvious problems.” Like you can tell from her narration she was expecting to feel the same was about Cinna that she does about Effie and her prep team.

Hmm it’s funny to me that Katniss refers to Octavia as plump. You’d think in a place like the Capitol body image and weight would be very important. Unless it’s like back in the old, old days when being overweight was a sign of wealth. Which would make more sense so this was an unnecessary thought process curtesy of Samantha

Katniss faking a smile and thanking her prep team shows she does know how to play the game and fake it better than she says.

So ... okay, hear me out, I’m not trying to get over the top or make this into something it’s not but ... the whole stylists / Cinna coming into the room and staring at her naked is a little weird. Especially considering Cinna isn’t Lenny Kravitz who’s like a bit older than her but actually like a twenty-something year old dude.

But okay, here’s the thing I was getting at ... Cinna’s one of the best people in this series and you can’t deny that. Even if you find him boring, he’s still one of Katniss’ closest people. Also he’s probably gay. But like ... what about the other stylists? I don’t wanna be that person who makes everything more than it is, but like, this scene just sounds like a perfect opportunity for some Capitol creep to assault a teenager idk I’m probably making a mountain out of a molehill just ignore Samantha okay.

That’s nice that he complimented her mama though 🥰🥰🥰

So Katniss calls District Twelve the least desirable district but ... doesn’t District Eleven suck too? Like she also later says District Twelve is the smallest and the poorest but doesn’t she also say Rue is worse off than her and Prim? Make up your mind, Suz.

Cinna claims he asked for District Twelve but did he really get an option? 😅 If it’s his first year and Katniss claims the newbies get them anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️ Samantha is once again, reading too much into this.

Awww, Katniss is thinking about how long it would take for her to assemble this fancy meal at home 🤧🤧🤧 it would take her days and the Capitol just has the necessary resources at their disposal and they just takes it for granted. And yes, I’m aware this is supposed to be calling all us readers out who take so much for granted I know. We’re the Capitol.

“How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by?” It’s honestly so sad but so vital to her character that Katniss has zero hobbies or real free time. Her life is about surviving. She doesn’t get to live or enjoy very much of her time. She dedicates everything to keeping Prim — and her mother — alive, sacrificing everything a teenage girl should be doing. Sacrificing even the things the other girls in her world get to do. She mentions the merchant girls and the Seam girls who are more experienced romantically and sexually and socially than her. Because she doesn’t get to be a kid or innocent or even happy, in order to focus on her and her family’s survival. And the things she does enjoy, like spending time with Gale or dancing with Prim (mentioned in Mockingjay) she downplays in case they’re taken away, because nothing good is secure in her eyes. 🥺🥺🥺

Okay but what did Katniss’ facial expression give away that Cinna knew exactly what she was thinking? Or is she just less emotionless than she and Haymitch both claim? Ironically I think they’re the only people who call her emotionless which can easily be chalked up to their self-hate and terrible self-esteems.

Katniss is so afraid they’re gonna make her be naked for the parade 😭. Honestly though they’re children that’s so creepy that they’re even allowed to make 15/16/17 year olds be naked in a parade. I mean I know they kill kids every year but isn’t there like child pornography laws in Panem? 😭

“You’re not afraid of fire, are you, Katniss?” Is so foreshadowing 😭😂😅😎 Caesar Flickerman’s voice “Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire!”

Honestly though Cinna is smart to make Katniss recognizable in the arena by leaving her with simple makeup. I know and the sky is blue we all know this already beating the dead horses until the farmer comes home.

“It crosses my mind that Cinna's calm and normal demeanor masks a complete madman.” It’s true though 😅😅😅😭😭 he was always a rebel. I actually think he may have asked for District Twelve after Katniss volunteered, because he saw the potential in her. Poor Peeta. Baby, I’m rooting you for even if no one else is.

Also I always found it a bit .... curious? That Peeta had a female stylist and Katniss had a male one? Not just because of the required nudity, you’d just think men would do better as a boy’s stylist and a woman would make a better girl’s stylist. So yes, my whole Cinna was interested in District Twelve because Katniss seemed like a good symbol for a rebellion idea seems very plausible.

I know I know I know I read wayyy too much into this stuff sometimes a cigarette 🚬 is just a cigarette 🚬

Katniss being relieved when Peeta shows up 😭😭😭 because even if she won’t admit it and even if she won’t let herself trust him, she still sees him unconsciously and completely against her will as a comfort because they’re in this thing together in a way, even if they’re supposed to try and kill each other

And honestly, it’s such a like... relatable feeling? To feel alone and nervous and uptight and then someone who you recognize — even if you maybe aren’t even friends with but you at least know — shows up and you just instantly feel less alone. I’m totally looking at this through shipper goggles and I’m not even ashamed you all knew who’s blogging you were reading ight? 😂🤣🤷🏼‍♀️

“He should know about fire, being a baker's son and all.” And he’s gonna learn a lot more about it when he falls in love — for real, falls in love, not a childhood infatuation — with the girl on fire. 🥰🥰🥰

But also, I love this particular line on a reread because it totally is an indicator towards their future. Like Peeta knows about fire, he’s experienced with how to handle it, and later on, he becomes the only person who truly comes to understand Katniss, who represents fire, in a way that no one else could ever imagine.

Hmmm, Katniss’ point of view here, talking about how Portia and Peeta’s team seem all giddy and air-headed and it’s only Cinna who seems reserved makes me rethink my previous imaginings of Peeta’s stylist. Maybe she’s just a Capitolite idiot and nothing like Cinna. And my baby got a raw deal here then too. Good thing Haymitch loves him more. Just kidding 😅😅😅

But also I wanna know why Cinna is hesitant to accept congratulations for his and Portia’s idea? Wasn’t he at least lowkey excited about it when he pitched it a page ago?

Okay I have to say, Suzanne Collins really builds up a lot for certain events and then just like grazes over the actual action of said event? Like she builds towards the tribute parade but then kind of rushes through off the actual event itself? It’s a common theme in her writing. And I don’t like it at all ngl.

Oh wait she doesn’t actually rush the parade events the paragraph before just looked like she was about to I jumped the gun 🤣😂🤭 but what I said is still completely true for many events in these books sorry not sorry

I’m definitely reading too much into it but the fact that District One — the favorite of the Capitol — gets snow white horses and District Twelve gets coal black horsies kind of ... seems to imply something .... 🤭

Cinna just lets out a sigh of relief “it worked” like ... way to fill your tributes with hope, dude. “Yeah, you’re totally safe, don’t be scared-OH THANK GOD THAT WORKED I wasn’t actually sure you wouldn’t blow up.” But actually this answers my previous inquiry about why he seemed hesitant I guess he wasn’t even sure this wouldn’t burn them up that’s nice 🤭🙃

“Then he gently tucks a hand under my chin. "Remember, heads high. Smiles. They're going to love you!" This is caught halfway between being very Capitol-y and very father-brotherly and idk which way to take it but it’s kind of cute 🤭

“For the first time, I look at him and realize that ablaze with the fake flames, he is dazzling.” This is such a significant line because Katniss isn’t saying Peeta is technically good looking (like when Haymitch said they were decently attractive) or someone else thinks he’s good looking (i.e Gale, her mother and lowkey Finnick) but she’s saying she herself thinks he’s attractive. Girl, your crush is showing.

"I think he said for us to hold hands," says Peeta.” I’m sure Cinna actually did say that but this just seems like a very good opportunity for Peeta to hold the hand of the girl he has a massive crush on. 😭😭😭

Okay Cinna gave a thumbs up so he actually was saying that but can you imagine Peeta’s excitement right now?

I mean, yeahhhh, there’s the certain death looming over him too but like live in the moment, babe. 🥰😘🤗👌🏻

I like that Katniss says the crowd is at first like 😳😳😳 before they start cheering like they’re thinking “what are these backwoods, hillbilly kids doing this year?”

“At first, I'm frozen, but then I catch sight of us on a large television screen and am floored by how breathtaking we look. In the deepening twilight, the firelight illuminates our faces” okay they both have to be pretty naturally attractive people objectively, because you illuminate my face without much makeup and no one is gonna be cheering.

“Remember, heads high. Smiles. They're going to love you! I hear Cinna's voice in my head. I lift my chin a bit higher, put on my most winning smile, and wave with my free hand.” I wonder what the true difference is for Katniss between Cinna and Effie saying this to her? Maybe it’s that Effie is just outright mean to her sometimes whereas Cinna shows her nothing but kindness from the start and expresses sympathy and understanding? It’s probably that he’s already earning her trust versus Effie who’s just cruel I’m not over her comments on the train ok

“I'm glad now I have Peeta to clutch for balance, he is so steady, solid as a rock.” Right from the start, Katniss refers to Peeta as solid and steady. Idk, I feel like this is something that the movies really misses along the way. Katniss wasn’t always strong or confident at all and Peeta, at least publicly, exuded those qualities pretty well. Samantha’s complaining again ™️ 💁🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Also this is just outright foreshadowing how Peeta will eventually become her rock. Or that he will be soon painted a rock ... pick and choose which way you wanna go with this. 🤷🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️😅🤣

“As I gain confidence, I actually blow a few kisses to the crowd.” Okay, see I feel like Peeta really gives Katniss confidence in herself. If he’d been there in District Thirteen and they’d done propos together, she probably would have been a thousand times better.

But also this makes me think Katniss actually has it in her to be a charismatic, confident, alluring celebrity. She just chooses not to. 🤗🤗🤗

But this also reminds me of “She has no idea the effect she can have” okay imma move on and stop focusing on every little detail

I say that every chapter 🤧😅

“The pounding music, the cheers, the admiration work their way into my blood, and I can't suppress my excitement.” Say whatever you want, Katniss is still such a girl underneath it all. She gets excited over people liking her and cheering her on. And I know it’s because it increases her chances of getting sponsors but still

Honestly Peeta trying to showcase Katniss and let her take the spotlight is so selfless and indicative of his ultimate plan to help her win but also ... I can see how Katniss would believe it’s too good to be true and he’s messing with her. That he’s just playing the game to earn her trust, get her guard down and manipulate her later.

See, Peeta is actually framed at the start like the typical, standard YA love interest turned villain. In majority of YA books, at this point the boy is kind and sweet and helpful to the girl until she trusts him completely and then he turns on her and uses everything she gave him to destroy her. But the difference is, Katniss refuses to truly trust him and she is guessing his game incorrectly at every step. And then it’s revealed that it was never a game and he truly isn’t messing with her and everything he’s done that’s seem too good to be true and not even remotely plausible has actually been genuine and heartfelt and that, my friends, is why Peeta is above all other YA love interests. Because Everlark is actually the foil to many of the cliches. That was a long speech over some incoherent thoughts I’m so sorry if you suffered through that.

And second off.... can you even imagine how Peeta must feel. He genuinely complimented her here, the girl he has had a crush on forever, and she responds by kissing his cheek. He was probably really happy at this moment. And also this probably played further into his buying into her false display in the arena. I love ships that include side characters that were supposed to be one offs or minor villains/problems but the fandom latched onto them and now they're mainstream.

2 examples of mine are Benny and Bad Cop from The Lego Movie, and Gavin Reed and RK900 from Detroit: Become Human.

like??? Benny and Bad Cop had maybe ONE scene together in Lego Movie and have nothing in common yet the Lego fandom absolutely loves them. Bad Cop even imprisons Benny later in the movie and people are like "yeah this is the perfect ship". I think "Coppernauts" is one of if not the most popular ship in the TLM fandom.

don't even get me started on Reed and RK900 from DBH. Gavin serves no purpose to the plot of DBH and is literally only there to be a minor problem to Connor. The entire time he's on screen he is a jerk for no reason. RK900 has like 1 minute 30 seconds of screen time total and doesn't speak AT ALL but people still love him as much as Connor. The fandom just gave him a personality and everyone agreed on it. Yet Reed900 is again one of the most popular ships in the fandom. two characters who have never and probably will never interact on screen are so beloved by everyone that THEY ACTUALLY GOT A FULL ON FAN-MADE MOVIE touching more on the ship and how the characters would interact. It's actually really good.

Now understand that I love both of these ships dearly, they're 2 of my favorite of all time, but what makes them so lovable? I think it's the "fanon" versions of these characters that people latched onto more than the canon ones, especially with Reed900 and Gavin Reed.

Fanon Gavin is much more capable of change than his canon counterpart. the fandom paints him as the sort of cold character who wants to get better but doesn't know how to open up to others. fanon Gavin is given the opportunity to change. he gets more development, same with RK900 or "Nines". while the canon Nines is completely silent and barely gives away any emotion, fanon Nines is much more characterized. He is still given his signature stoic look and blank expression, but it's built on with a personality that matches and challenges Gavin's. Basically, they made him sassy.

I hope people I know irl don't see this, I just thought I'd put my thoughts out there into the void. PhD Dissertation Masterpost of Advice and Resources*

*or at least what helped me when I was writing mine for a PhD in Cancer Biology in the US--so they may not apply to other fields and/or countries.

Firstly, what a PhD Dissertation and Defense process is like (for my program)

Always check your university’s graduate college’s dissertation formatting and guidelines. That should be your #1 rulebook to work off of. Download their formatting guide and read it thoroughly. Before turning in your dissertation, make sure you’ve addressed all the requirements. 

Get a sample from a previous student as reference, preferably one from your program, or even better, your lab. All dissertations are publicly available online at your university’s library (with the exception of those with embargoes). Always have an example on hand--you never know when it’ll come in handy for minor formatting details, or even references (if it’s a dissertation from your own lab). 

Familiarize yourself with whatever writing program you’re going to use, and if it can do any of the formatting automatically for you. For example, Microsoft Word can make a Table of Contents for you if you use their Automated Styles, and you can use the Navigation Pane to view all your sections at a glance (and jump instantly to that section). I highly recommend figuring out all the formatting before you start writing, as it may be really frustrating to go back and fix things (especially if you’re doing this on the due date). Scroll down to the end of this post for formatting resources. 

I think the ideal timeline is one month per chapter, give or take a few weeks depending on how much you have done beforehand and how much time you have per day to allocate to writing. There will be a lot of back-and-forth edits with your advisor, you may find out there are missing data that need analyzing/finalizing, etc. Your last month or so of writing may have to be dedicated 100% to your dissertation, so plan accordingly. I have heard many PhD’s tell me to even start a year out, because you may be busy your last couple of months with job interviews, or even starting your new job, etc. 

Export your images as .png if possible or your document will become too large. 

Use a citation manager, if you don’t have one already, such as Mendeley. 

Also have a way to keep track what each reference is about, especially for the Introduction as that may require some new additions (ie. things you learned in class or lab meeting but never actually had to chase down a primary reference for). You can use Excel, Word, or good ol’ fashioned printouts in subject binders--anything that helps you remember what the paper is about what. I ended up citing over 400 references in my dissertation--that was a lot of papers to keep track of!

As with any large writing project, make an outline first. This way you can better structure everything from a bird’s eye view, and make sure you’re not missing anything. Just like building a house, you need to set up the frames first before the drywall. The outline to my Introduction was 5 pages long before I even wrote the first complete sentence, and the outline also helped me not feel too overwhelmed with the task before me (likewise, I also started off each paragraph with a brief outline of the points I wanted to cover. It worked really well in getting rid of writer’s block)

Have a separate folder for each chapter, to keep things better organized and easier to manage. I didn’t put everything together in a single file until the very end. 

And always back up your files, or work entirely off a Cloud-based system, like Dropbox or Box (which your university may provide for free). There’s absolutely nothing worse than losing allll your hard work, especially your Dissertation! 

Set aside at least 1 hour before your Dissertation is due to your committee for last minute issues, like formatting, uploading, etc. 

If you’re in the Bio field, I highly recommend making your figures using Biorender.com. It honestly saved me so much time, and it took my dissertation and defense to a whole new level of professionalism. It’s free to use for students, though the paid student version ($35/mo) has more features.

Other tips on surviving this challenging time:

Write smart, not hard. Use your energy and creativity levels wisely. For example, I found out I was really great at synthesizing thoughts (and thus words on the document) in the morning, but not so much at night. So I did most of my writing in the morning, and then reserved evenings for making figures and adding references (aka things that required less brain-energy).

Take breaks! This is definitely a marathon, so please try not to push yourself too hard to prevent burning out. Here’s what my writing schedule looked like 1 week before my dissertation was due to my committee--you can see I worked hard, but I also had lots of breaks throughout the day to eat and/or recharge, and I tried to sleep 7-8 hrs/night. 

The moment you think you can’t do something alone, seek out a resource that will help you. There’s no time or energy to waste. Resources include: your advisor, another lab member, a university writing center, online tutorials, even other grad students on tumblr. No one else has written a dissertation on their own, so you shouldn’t have to either. 

Have a support system, like another fellow student going through something similar who you can talk to. It helps so much to not be lonely during this. 

Have something fun planned after you turn in your dissertation and after you defend to look forward to. Sometimes all that was left to get me through the tough and frustrating moments was the thought of all my plans post-defense: going to my favorite used bookstore, reading for fun again, relaxing and watching movies, and more. Small things, but oh so powerful to keep me going sometimes. 

You will get through this. I know it’s hard. I know how close to tears you are. But I also know you will survive. Remember all those tough times in the past? Like when you were studying for your qualifying exams? Or writing and re-writing that grant application for what seemed like the 500th time? Those were some tough times, but you got through them all. And so you will also get through this.

And lastly, but probably most importantly:

Do what works for you. You haven’t made it this far in your academic career without a solid understanding of your own working style, so stick to that. My advice is just what happened to work for me, personally, and thus may not apply to anyone else.

Always & Forever - Oneshot

Author’s note: just basically a oneshot of Pedro & reader at the Golden Globes and announcing some exciting news!; special appearance by Oscar Isaac

Pedro walks over to you in your shared bedroom. He finishes zipping the zipper for you then wraps his arms around you. Both of you looking at the reflection of one another in the ceiling to floor length mirror. He rubs your stomach over the royal purple silk dress you’re wearing. “If win I get to announce it to the world.”

You smile and place your hands over his, “only if you win first. If you don’t I will. Even though I will be a nervous wreck.”

He frowns slightly, “what if we don’t win?”

“Then we’ll announce it later.” You reply turning to face him inside of his embrace. You reach up and straighten the bow tie for his tux.

“I love you missus Pascal.”

You raise your eyebrows. “I thought we were announcing the pregnancy, not the engagement.”

Pedro grins, “yes the baby.” He kisses you lightly, “I just love the sound of calling you missus Pascal.”

You laugh, “we aren’t even married yet.”

“Gives you time to get used to it.” Pedro shrugs, touches the ring on your left hand, “maybe change your mind.”

You loop an arm around his neck and press your mouth to his. “Never, mister Pascal. Always and forever.”

He smiles widely, “always and forever.”

You stand there smiling, knowing you want no one else but him. You look at your ring and slide it off, knowing you two are planning to announce the engagement in a few days with your friends and family with a surprise party/engagement party.

The melody of the doorbell chimes throughout the house.

“Ready future missus Pascal?” Pedro asks holding out his hand.

“Ready as I’ll ever be mister Pascal,” you say grabbing his hand.

Your stomach’s doing flip flops as the limo comes to a stop outside of the Beverly Hilton hotel. Throngs of fans, interviewers, and cameras were lined down the red carpet ready to shout and scream, ask questions, and take pictures. This was your first awards show ever, and your first one with Pedro. Both of you were nominated – him Best Supporting Actor, you Best Screenplay. Though not for the same movie.

Once outside in the warm California air, you hear his name being screamed and shouted, you hear your name a few times too but Pedro was what the crowd wanted. He, after all, is The Mandalorian.

You sigh as you smile and loop your arm into Pedro’s.

“It’s okay, mi amor. Just breathe.” Pedro whispers. He knows you aren’t one for big crowds.

“Says you,” you say with a smile.

He places a light kiss on your forehead, “we’ll be inside before you know it.”

Forty minutes later you and Pedro walk into the ballroom and take a seat at your assigned table. Thankful for a couple of familiar faces – Oscar Isaac and his wife Elvira.

“You two look lovely,” Elvira says as you sit down.

“Thank you. At least you two didn’t have to deal with Baby Yoda questions and ‘are you two ever going to work together,’” you reply with a light laugh.

Oscar pipes in, “so are you two ever going to work together?”

The four of you laugh together as the lights begin to flash, indicating five minutes to show time. Pedro moves his chair closer to yours and places his hand in your lap. As you take his hand in yours, he places a kiss on your head. You know his category is one of the first few to be done.

You squeeze his hand lightly, he’s just as nervous as you are.

Close to half an hour later, Idris Elba and Jennifer Lopez walk onto the stage and begin reading from the teleprompt. Pedro begins to tap his leg from his nerves, and you reach out and squeeze it. He looks over at you and smiles, “just wait till they get to your category.”

You smile and roll your eyes.

Jennifer opens the envelope, “and the winner of the Golden Globe is Pedro Pascal!”

Pedro looks stunned at first but smiles as he looks at you and kisses you on the mouth.

“Congratulations babe!” You exclaim as you embrace him briefly before letting him go.

Pedro walks up to the stage, weaving in between tables. Once he is on stage, he shakes Idris’ hand and kisses Jennifer on the cheek while taking the award.

“Wow,” Pedro says into the mic, as he looks down at the award. “Wow.” He clears his throat and returns his focus to the audience. “Thank you HFPA. Thank you to the cast and crew of the movie. The director, the producers. My agent for placing this script in front of me. My family and friends for always supporting me.” He finds you in the crowd and smiles. “To the amor de mi vida, I love you more than anything on this Earth. You are my rock, my foundation. Thank you for giving me the courage to step out of my comfort zone to do this. I am over the moon we are starting our own family in less than seven months. Always and forever mi amor.”

Oscar and Elvira both look at you dead on.

You blush and smile then look over at them and shrug, “he won, he got to announce it.”

Elvira brings you in for a hug. “Congratulations!”

You hug her back, “thank you.”

She pulls away, “know what you want?”

“No, and we want it to be a surprise.” You answer.

“You should have twins. Boy, girl. One little Pedro, one little you.” Oscar laughs.

“Just one will do. For now.” You smile.

“Care if we do a betting pool?” Oscar asks.

Elvira glares at him.

Oscar shrugs, “what? It’ll be fun guessing what Pedro and Y/N will have, and when he or she, or them will be born.”

You and Elvira both laugh and shake your heads.

Pedro returns to the table, award in hand. He sits back down in his seat and brings you into his arms. “You are my world love.”

“And you, mine.” You sigh contently.

Pedro places a hand on your stomach. “And I’ll keep telling him, or her, I won first and was able to announce it to the whole world.”

“But I will be their favorite parent,” you say back at him teasingly.

Pedro smiles, “we’ll see about that.”

You knew the award show was getting to close to the end when Oscar excuses himself from the table because he is the presenter for the category you are nominated for. Your leg becomes jittery under your gown and Pedro is there to stop it with the gentle hand.

“Breathe,” he whispers.

“I can’t,” your lungs feel small.

He kisses you lightly. “Breathe,” he grabs your hand and holds it.

You swallow as you nod and breathe. You hated this but loved him.

Oscar walks out on the stage with Emilia Clark and they begin their spiel for the Best Screenplay and announce the nominees. Emilia hands the envelope over to Oscar who opens it slowly then smiles, “so glad I get to announce this. The Golden Globe goes to Y/F/N Y/L/N!”

You’re taken back by your name being called as Pedro embraces you tightly. You hug him back and squeeze.

He pulls back, smiles and touches your cheek. “Go get ‘em.”

You nod as you make your way up to the stage. Oscar hugs you before you let go and embrace Emilia who hands you your award. It’s not light, not too heavy. This was a first for you, a first time winning an award like this.

“Oh, my,” you breathlessly say. “Thank you HFPA, thank you to, uh, Sarah Polley for taking a chance on my script. To all the producers thank you for taking a chance on the both of us with this little movie. To the cast – you brought my words to life and I can never thank you enough for that. To the crew – you made it all possible. To my friends, my family I am all here because of you.” You pause and twist your hands around the award. You look up and find Pedro in the crowd. “And to the love of my life, you encouraged me to write this story and I am so thankful you did. Without you this wouldn’t have been possible. You are my world, always and forever. I can’t wait to start a family with you either.”

You couldn’t ask for anything more in this moment. You had everything you ever needed – the love of your life and the promise of new life inside of you.

Suga is literally the sweetest, he's so caring, so loving and just wants to take care of you

When you're not feeling well and something is up, he'll have his mama sensors tingling

Waits to see if you'll say anything by yourself...you won't? Oh dear no... I can't save you from him then haha

He will sit down with you a few days after he noticed you being in a bad mood

He'll make your favorite food, put on a good show or movie and basically cacoon you into a fluffy blanket and some soft pillows

You'll feel very safe and secure then that your problems walk away for a moment. You're living in the present, with sweet Koushi by your side

His arms are around you and pulling you real tight against him, his hand is tracing circles on your back and you almost, aLmOsT fall asleep when-

"Did you plan on telling me what's wrong?"

Oh fluff...he isn't amused anymore

Not necessarily angry at you but feels hurt a little because he thinks you don't trust him enough to talk to him about your problems

Isn't as observing as Koushi. Yes, he definitely notices something is wrong when your mood changes but doesn't pick up on it real early like Koushi

Baby doesn't strike me as a cooker so that's out of the window

Bangs his head against the wall trying to think of a way to make you feel better because you, apparently, weren't planning on saying anything yourself

Ends up just buying your favorite snacks in the store, maybe this cute little stuffed animal just cause it reminded him of you

Comes to your house, he isn't oozing confidence while standing at your front door. He's nervous, he isn't the perfect type for consoling but he's going to try

You're pretty surprised when you see him at your doorstep and before you can even question him he goes:

"I noticed you've been pretty upset lately and I want to make you feel better so can I come in?"

Definitely doesn't say this calmly lol but you caught on to his words and your heart just goes uwu cause he's going out of his comfort zone to do this

You two would head up to your room and close to the door. He'll notice how it looked like you haven't left your room in a while and that worries him a bit

Tries to act as normal as usual because maybe you don't want to talk about your problems??? Maybe this was a bad idea??? He's worried.

When you decide to let him know what's going on, he feels protective all of a sudden. Asks if he can help you in any way cause he'll be damned if someone messes with you

In the end it's you that ends up calming him down by gently running your hand over his arm and reasurring him that all you need at this moment is him... And some cuddles

Lili Reinhart Never Had a Backup Plan

A fan favorite on the wildly popular teen soap Riverdale, Lili Reinhart has major movie stardom in her sights. And if you ask nicely, she just might read your horoscope.

Refreshingly, Reinhart is not vegan, gluten-free, keto, or on a macrobiotic diet. She is a self-described picky eater and considers this a treat. "No one wants to go [here] with me," she says, excitedly, when we sit down. Though Reinhart is dressed unfussily, in a faded black tee, Topshop denim jacket, jeans, thin hoop earrings, and a taupe baseball cap pulled over her buttery blonde hair, she is promptly approached by a woman at the next table. There's a lot the cap isn't hiding. Off-screen, Reinhart's eyes look as wide, upturned, and full-lashed as a Disney princess's; her clear, milky complexion is dotted youthfully with freckles; and her dimples seem to take turns showing off: a slight divot in her chin, then twin creases that show up on either side of her face when she's amused.

The woman leans over and asks Reinhart if she is on TV. Reinhart's lips tighten, and a wince flickers at her eyes, but she gives a polite smile and nods slowly. The woman plows on. Her son is a big fan, she says, motioning to a grinning boy beside her. He's an aspiring actor, and they're in town from Texas to give it a try. Reinhart relaxes a bit. She asks what part of Texas they are from, sincerely congratulates the boy on his endeavors, and turns to resume our interview. Reinhart says this moment — and others like it — is more full circle than she would care to admit.

"It's funny. I went to this Cheesecake Factory with my mom when I was, like, 15," she says. "We had flown in for an audition. I was sitting at the table over there, and I remember I got the email that I didn't get the part." Also around that time, Reinhart recalls spotting Zac Efron in a doctor's-office waiting room and surreptitiously snapping a photo of the actor. "I feel so gross about it now," she says. "It is flattering, but it also makes you feel like a zoo animal. Even when I'm sitting in the cast greenroom, if [someone is] holding their phone up like this, I'm like, ‘What are you doing?' I've become very paranoid."

I ask what she thinks about that F-word: fame. She changes the subject. "Cute boots," she remarks. I am flattered and launch into a monologue about how much I love Primark, specifically the one in Madrid, before realizing what she's done and ask her once more to talk. About. Fame. "It's so weird," she says, finally. "I don't really think about it until I'm around people. I don't think about it until I see young women, because those are the people that recognize me. Then all of a sudden, I become very aware."

True to her word, I notice Reinhart physically tenses up every time a teenage girl — or worse, a group of teenage girls — nears us. But when she's not on high alert for high schoolers, Reinhart is unguarded to a degree I would not expect from any stranger, much less one whose privacy is under constant scrutiny. For starters, she texts me directly, rather than having an assistant or manager handle our communication (standard for most celebrities).

Later that night, we decide on a meeting location for the next day. "As long as we go somewhere with eggs, I'm happy," she texts, before we settle on Dialog Cafe in West Hollywood and push back the time — neither of us feels like showing up before 9 a.m. Reinhart has an ease and openness in conversation that makes talking to her feel more like a slumber party than an interview. She volunteers thoughts on cute babies (just her goddaughter, for now), romantic love (something she prefers to fall into rarely, and fiercely), taking a spouse's surname (she favors hyphenation), and being the "grandma" of her friend group.

"When I get drunk, my friends act like it's a national holiday," Reinhart says. She offers up snippets from her camera roll and Instagram direct messages: photos of the hot-air balloon ride her boyfriend, Cole Sprouse, took her on for her birthday, and a dog she wishes were up for adoption — a shaggy shelter pup with no eyes. And just when I think I couldn't feel any more like the real-life Veronica to her Betty, she asks me if I want to go shopping.

Reinhart leads us by memory through a sprawling Barnes & Noble, up to two flights of escalators, then over to the left and back toward the windows, until we end up in the self-improvement section. Reinhart used to come here with friends, back when she first moved to L.A., and spend time poring over books like The Secret Language of Your Name. She tells me the provenance of her given name: Daniel and Amy Reinhart of Cleveland fell in love, got married, and named their second daughter after the actor Lili Taylor. There wasn't any special connection. "They just liked the spelling of her name. It's the French spelling."

Reinhart drags a dictionary-thick tome from the shelf. "This is a book that I own," she says, handing it to me. It's as weighty as a textbook — it has to be, because it guarantees deep and profound knowledge about absolutely everyone, based on their date of birth. She helps me look up mine, which is hilariously titled the Day of Sensual Charisma. Hers is September 13, which the book has ordained the Day of Passionate Care. She reads the entry aloud. "Resilient determination. That sounds about right," she says. "This part is very true: ‘They may face great obstacles to their success, but not for a moment will the outcome be in doubt for them.' I always knew this is what I was going to do. I never had a plan B." It might be difficult to imagine what the aforementioned "great obstacles" have been, considering the fact that she had landed her role on Riverdale by the age of 19.

But being young and female in just about any work environment can have its dark side. Reinhart was 16 when an adult work associate attempted to force himself on her. "I felt physically pinned down to the ground while someone dry humped me, basically," she says. She has spoken publicly about the assault before — but in retrospect, she believes those statements were premature. "I think I shared my story…before I had really understood it," Reinhart says. "I kept thinking of it as something physical, but it was more so a psychological abuse...that spanned a couple of months. I went along with it and was trying to get his approval because we were working together…. I wanted my work environment to be easy."

She was also a minor at the time, being exploited by someone in a position of power. It's clearly difficult for Reinhart to recount. When trying to recall details — how long it went on, whether verbal abuse was involved — she speaks evenly, but frequently pauses and tells me that that time in her life is "blurry" or that she's "locked it away." "What makes me hopeful is people like [Supergirl and Glee actor] Melissa Benoist sharing her story of domestic abuse with the world, because I think she helped a lot of people by doing that. When people come forward about a sexual abuse experience or physical abuse or them struggling with a disorder, they're encouraging other people to not suffer in silence."

Another personal obstacle Reinhart has been vocal about is mental health. She recently read an article she can't get out of her head, about a child under the age of 10 who ended his life after being severely bullied. "Now more than ever, we need to be bringing the idea of mental health into schools and teaching it," Reinhart says. "It's about communicating clearly." She recalls experiencing crippling anxiety when she was growing up. "I felt very alone. But I was not being bullied, which made it really hard for my parents to understand," Reinhart says.

Her high school experience couldn't have been more different from that of Betty Cooper, who drifts easily between cheerleading, running the school newspaper, and solving mysteries, with a cadre of unusually attractive friends by her side. "I went through a semester when I didn't have any friends in my lunch period, and I didn't want to sit in a huge cafeteria by myself, so I would find classrooms to go sit in alone, or spend time in the bathroom, just chilling," she recalls.

By the time Reinhart began working (she supported herself as a waitress and a Pier 1 sales associate before she landed Riverdale), she was just trying to get through the week without having a panic attack.

Now that time in her life is growing distant. And she'll get to go to prom for the first time, on this season of the show. "Three and a half years ago, I had no money. I didn't have a love in my life like I do now. I didn't have any sort of confidence that I was on the right track, and now I have those things," Reinhart says. And her momentum shows no signs of stopping. The week after our interview, she filmed her first commercial for CoverGirl, which recently signed her as one of its faces. A forthcoming collection of her poetry, Swimming Lessons, will hit bookstores this May.

Pay, or equal pay, has been an issue and probably will continue to be. But Reinhart is prepared. "Cami [Mendes, who plays Veronica] and I have had to deal with that from Riverdale," Reinhart says.

"Going into projects in the future, I'm much more aware of it. So is my lawyer." She's also learned from the experiences of women like Michelle Williams and Taraji P. Henson. "I was taking notes," she says. "Taraji Henson had said something like, when she renegotiated for Empire, she knew her value to the show. She knew what that value was, and she demanded it." Reinhart pauses, choosing her words, sounding more sure of herself with each sentence: "I do know the value that I bring as someone who attracts an audience. And I'm not going to accept less than what I think I'm worth. And it's okay to fight for what I'm worth."
