I tuck your golden hair behind your ear as I lay beside you. I keep a glass of holy water on the bedside table for you. I want to ask you how you can sleep in a devil’s bed. I never get to. In the morning, you leave behind a stray white feather and it turns to dust when I reach out to touch it.

behold! my heart

a confection of spun-sugar  lightning

a tiny fragile star

you might think it would quake in awe of 

supernova light and inhuman form

but having stared into the infinite fragility of human existence a life constrained

by death from the moment we are born

I feel no trepidation only gentle sorrow

infinite love for the eternal embers

that can only watch us kindle and fall to ash
