I’m Just your problem (But please tell me i’m a winner)
Tumblr media
Okay so in my defense of this story, you didn’t actually say who you wanted to be the center of the story. And I kind of got inspired the second I heard the song and just ran with it. It’s a one shot about and staring Lila. So... yeah. Hope you enjoy it though. @abrx2002
I’m the winner!
Lila knew it didn’t have to be like this. It never had to be like this. She didn’t want to bury Marinette in the ground but little Miss Goodie Goodie just couldn’t leave well enough alone. So now Lila had to bury her with just a few words.
She couldn’t been Marinette’s friend. She wanted to be Marinette’s friend. Before even meeting the girl, the entire class had spun a tale of just how fabulous Marinette was. Lila had looked forward to meeting her, becoming her friend, and using her power to rule the class and school together. They could’ve both won. It would’ve been easy.
           Too easy apparently.
Because never, not even, once did Marinette want to be her friend. She never even gave Lila a chance. Lila the villain in Marinette’s story as far as the other girl was concerned.
Nice guys finish last.
That’s why I win.
I’m the winner.
The Little princess in pink swore she just didn’t like liars. But everyone told lies, even the perfect Marinette. (Especially Marinette) It was a fact. So why was Lila the one she called out? What was so wrong with Lila that Marinette couldn’t just leave well enough alone.
“Marinette didn’t like liars,” Lila scoffed. “Or maybe she just doesn’t like me!”
Which was a blow to the Italian girl’s pride. Because Marinette liked everyone. She gave everyone chances. Even Chloe! The girl who bullied Marinette and everyone else in class far worse than Lila could’ve considering doing herself.  If a spoiled rotten girl like Chloe deserved another chance (and another and another and another) but Lila didn’t get one, how rotten did Marinette think Lila was?
Maybe the lies weren’t the problem like Lila suspected. Maybe the issue was that she didn’t bow and cater to Marinette’s everywhere like the rest of the class seemed to do. They treated her like some goddess.
Is that what Marinette wanted? Did she wanted Lila to worship at her feet? Treat her like she’s perfect like her stupid little friends did? Loyal little lackeys that they are.
Were, Lila thought viciously. A few grand tales, some golden promises and they were at my beck and call. I won.
How’s that for friendship, Maribrat? How does it feel to know the friends you cared so much about turned on you with just a few words. Does it hurt? Does it sting?
Will you finally admit I’m better?
I’m worthy?
That I won?
Am I worthy of your friendship now?
Lila thought Marinette would stop then. After she turned everyone in class against her. Used the faculty’s foolishness to get the Marinette expelled. (Though it was reversed). The girl had lost everything. What was hers was Lila’s now. From bestie Alya, to meek pushover Adrien, to her place at center of class’s love and affection. It was Lila’s now. Because Lila won.
And the Italian girl thought it was a matter of time before Marinette came crawling back. A bit of time before she stopped calling out Lila for lying and just went with it. If she did, then Lila would be benevolent enough to stop accusing her of being a bully, coach the class into re-friending the poor sorry Marinette.
It never happened. Instead of begging and pleading to be Lila’s friend like Lila expected.
Wanted.
Needed.
Admit defeat.
Admit I beat you.
Admit that I won.
Marinette stopped looking hurt at all the nasty words her friends (Ex-friends, Lila thought viciously) were spitting at her, the girl started smiling at her phone, texting, giggling. She hardly ever batted an eye anymore. The only times she called Lila out on her lies was when Lila said anything directly involving Marinette.
She seemed to wash her hands of her classmates. Lila could only watch as she befriended other students from other classes.  Classes where Lila had no influence. Friends that didn’t fall easily to little small fibs.
Friends that were smarter that her last ones.
More loyal.
Better.
While the class rightfully worshiped at Lila’s feet now, Marinette moved on to bigger and better things. She played a new game; one that Lila couldn’t win.
It wasn’t fair!
I already won!
Me! I did.
I won!
Student council. Fashion Club. Powered, a club for future female CEOs. She started her own design website. She went on amazing trips and met people Lila could only dreaming of meeting and constantly lied about. Marinette slowly but surely became one of the most popular girls in school.
While I dwindled in mediocrity.
Forced to deal with her stupid ex-friends.
Forced to only lie about things I’ve done.
Forced to watch you do them.
Forced to watch you rise like a star.
Forced to watch you WIN.
Marinette would have rather befriend the entire school, everyone and their entire mother, than to debase herself by admitting defeat and bending to Lila’s whims, getting her friends back in the process. Nope. She rather waste her befriending insignificant morons than be Lila’s friend. It was proof alone how much she hated Lila.
She just used the lies as excuse to cover up the thousands of reason she must’ve hated Lila. Marinette didn’t want Lila to apologize for lying.
She wants me to apologize for not being like her!
Sweet. Perfect. Angelic.
Sorry, that Lila wasn’t made of sugar, spice, and everything. Sorry that’s the stupid reason for anyone to not like someone. To go out of their way to avoid them.
Anyone else would crumble at what Lila threw at them.
They had.
Three. Four. Five. Girls
All were left nothing more than a puddle of tears after I was done with them.
I beat them all!
I won.
But Marinette had gone from those, precious hurt and betrayed faces, to looking at everyone in class like they were just an inconvenience. Like Lila was a minor inconvenience to her day.
But I had won!
I know it!
She can’t just play a new game.
I won.
Every day, she looked through Lila like people look at extra credit math problems in a class your already Acing. She could solve it, put in some minor effort, and fix it but what was the point?  Marinette clearly had better things to do than to worry about her ex-friends, her ex-crush, about Lila; minor little problems in her otherwise PERFECT little life.
Lila was just a problem to Marinette. Not a friend, not an enemy anymore, just a stupid little problem. Not even a real person. Just a problem, she couldn’t even be bothered with anymore.
No! Marinette was too busy being elected Spring Queen at the Sweethearts dance.
Too busy on Claude, the star football play, the future Oscar-winning film maker, the most popular guy in school’s arm. The king to her Queen.
And to think Lila had be waiting, patiently, so very patiently, to see the devastated look on Maribrat’s face when she got to the dance and saw…
Adrien and Lila were at the dance, together, as dates; the perfect couple. Marinette was suipossed to be so, SO, heartbroken.
She never batted an eye.
She even told Lila how nice she looked.
And then went on her way. Because Lila wasn’t worth anymore of her time or energy. Like Lila hadn’t taken everything from her.
Like I hadn’t won.
Like I hadn’t beat her.
I did. I know I did.
I beat everyone.
I win at everything.
Marinette just wasn’t playing right.
It was the last time Marinette looked her way the entire night. She was too busy with her perfect friend, her perfect boyfriend, living her stupid perfect life. Being crowned Queen. Lila had broken every mirror and reflect surface in her room. If Marinette didn’t want to look at her problem than neither did Lila.
This wasn’t how winners acted…
After the dance, Lila had tried to get closer to the other kids in school, Marinette’s friends. But they didn’t bat at an eye at her. Had only given the barest looks of amusement, and pity, at her attempts.
It got so bad that Lila almost believed the lie she told the class about Marinette turning the school against her.
Truthfully she knew that Marinette couldn’t have been bothered to. She was too busy. Too busy to worry about the drama in their stupid little class.
Stupid busy for me!
No, she went on her day like Lila didn’t exist.
I exist, damn you.
I’m here.
And I beat you.
I won!
The more she ignored Lila the worst Lila got the class to treat her. Exile her. Got them to get Bustier to get kick Marinette off the school field trips.
Not that it bother Marinette. She just stopped helping fund raise. Went on jaw-dropping trips with her new friends. Ignored the sneers and glares from her ex-friends. Like nothing bother her. None of them matter.
None of them were important enough to matter to her! Lila wasn’t important enough to matter to the great Marinette.
Is this how you treat people who beat you, huh, Maribrat?
You ignore them?
Pretend they’re not there.
SO you can pretend I didn’t win!
Lila wasn’t going to apologize for beating her fair and square.  She wasn’t going to stop lying, tell the truth, and beg for Marinette’s friendship. Because what would that really do?
It would be a forfeit.
It would mean I didn’t win.
And really it wasn’t like she did anything wrong, right? If anything Marinette should be thanking Lila for revealing the true colors of her so-called friends, of her crush. Not that Lila was trying to justify anything. Because she didn’t have to.
I won, after all.
Lila won so Marinette shouldn’t be ignoring her in class, right? She shouldn’t act like nothing Lila did phased her. Like Lila didn’t exist. Lila shouldn’t have to be the one to make amends, right?
History is written by the victors.
And I won!
It wouldn’t matter even if she did. Marinette had always hated her, had always been out to get her, had disliked her the moment she laid eyes on Lila just like Ladybug.
Lila had always been on Marinette’s blacklist. And she had done so many things, she couldn’t even remember what landed her there in the first place. It was something stupid, probably. Something so minor, some little lie that Marinette was to uppity to forgive, to let go of.
It was her problem, not mine.
It was all Marinette’s fault, right? It was all her fault! So NO! Lila wouldn’t admit defeat. She wouldn’t stop lying. So why do I want to…
Lila would rub everything she took from Marinette into the other girl’s face. Maribrat would break eventually. They always do. They have to, right? No one could deal with losing so much in such a short while. She’ll admit she was wrong, right? That She should’ve bowed down and accepted Lila as her friend, as the class’s new sweetheart. She’d admit Lila won then, right? Lila beat her. Lila was and is and always will be the winner.
I won!
I beat her.
So there! Lila won, that was it. That was how the game ended and how the story would too. She’d marry Adrien, make Alya her maid of honor just to rub it in Marinette’s face that Lila had everything she ever dreamed of.
Then she’d admit Lila’s won. Because Lila always wins! She already won, after all. Marinette just refused to be a good little loser and admit it…
           Lila won.
I’m the winner, right?

Lucky it Was Hotdogs
So! This is my gift for the @jatp-gift-exchange celebrating 6 months since the show came out. I just so happened to be assigned my friend @tmp-jatp as my giftee. Which is awesome because she’s awesome. She asked for angst and my first thought was my reputation is just going to get worse. 😂 And then I started writing, started over, changed to a different prompt two more times...had a few breakdowns but here we are! Basically all of my friends had to hear about my spiral the last couple of days so thank you and my apologies. 🙏
T, I hope you like it! 💜💜💜
In some ways Luke thinks that it’s lucky it was hot dogs.
Of course, if he had been asked to choose a way to go back in 95 he probably would have said old and in his sleep. Or maybe he would have been a smart ass and said jumping the grand canyon on a motorcycle or playing an epic show in bad weather and having some sort of electrical incident (Reggie wasn’t the only one who had been involved in that amp incident not that he was in a hurry to tell Alex that). Contaminated hot dogs in an alley on the night of their big break probably wouldn’t have occurred to him and it definitely wouldn’t have cracked the top ten list of his requests.
But now that he’s in the future, with his band and with Julie and with their dreams once again a real possibility...he thinks the hot dogs would have been the right choice.
The truth is it doesn’t matter how tragic it is that three kids had their lives cut short at the same time it’s always going to be at least a little bit funny that they went from death by hot dog. It lets him use the tragedy as a means of teasing Julie as she bites into her sandwich and it lets Willie give Alex an affectionate nickname that’s only a little in bad taste. It lets Reggie hover behind Ray when Julie’s dad gets the grill out and clutch his stomach dramatically in a reenactment for his friends amusement. It lets Julie look at Luke like the fact that he is a ghost is mildly exasperating but not inherently upsetting, not like it would be if he was a walking reminder of a car accident or the cancer that took her mom.
So yeah, it’s lucky it was hot dogs.
Except...sometimes Luke wishes that it wasn't.
Sometimes he wishes that he had died from an illness or an accident or anything that would prompt someone to look at him and ask if he wanted to talk about it. Because...he does. Just sometimes. Wants to talk about how much it hurt. Wants to talk about how scared he was. Wants to talk about how even though being able to make music still (being able to make music with Julie) matters most it does bother him.
It bothers him that Julie is the only lifer he can touch (even though she would clearly be his first choice).
It bothers him that he fades into non-existence as soon as they stop playing.
It bothers him that he can’t even thank Julie’s dad for hosting their garage gig or show her brother that he’s holding it all wrong when he catches him strumming lightly on Luke’s guitar one day.
It bothers him that he won’t ever be anything other than what he is, a teenager with a guitar and a longstanding suspicion about the consequences of wearing sleeves while performing.
It bothers him that Julie will always be what she is now (an amazing teenage girl with a wrecking ball voice and a heart big enough to keep them with her through sheer force of will) but she will also become so much more.
An adult.
Someone with a job and a family and…
He can’t think about it.
Except he does.
Not all the time but often enough, especially at night when Alex is off with Willie and Reggie is watching tv with an unsuspecting Ray and Luke is wishing more than anything that he could find the escape of sleep.
So usually he ends up writing when he feels like this, seeking out the familiar sensation of pen flying over paper, words tumbling from the deepest recesses of his mind to collect into the shape of a song.
I know I’m being selfish
But feeling alive isn’t being alive
Feeling you breathe isn’t breathing
I just want this feeling forever
Instead I count every moment I’m stealing
“Why are you writing in the dark?” Julie’s amused voice cuts through the silence causing him to jump, a remnant of a time when he had anything to fear other than his own uncertain future.
He’s not sure if it’s a ghostly superpower or just the fact that he had been peering at his notebook from only about an inch away but it’s true, he hadn’t bothered to turn the light on and he saw it just fine.
The dark felt more appropriate somehow when he felt like this anyway.
She flips on the light and crosses the room to sink down beside him where he’s spread out on the floor. He’s so distracted for a moment by just how Julie she always manages to be (beautiful and amazing and distracting in the best way) that he doesn’t realize that she’s reaching for his notebook until it’s too late. He tries to snatch it back fruitlessly as she turns her eyes to the words he has scrawled across the page. He hopes momentarily that she won’t be able to make out his infamously illegible handwriting but his hopes are dashed when she reads out the last few lines in a thoughtful tone. He has a brief flash of affection at the realization that she must be his soulmate if she can read his handwriting.
He’s distracted from that thought though when he sees the smile slide off of her face only to be replaced with a tight frown before she turns to face him, concern shining in her eyes.
“I’m fine,” He says quickly, hoping to prevent any of his dark mood from seeping into the girl beside him.
The girl who has already known enough darkness for a lifetime.
“Every moment you’re stealing?” She quotes back to him, setting the notebook carefully back on the floor. “That doesn’t sound fine.”
He considers brushing off her concern, playing it off, claiming he’s not even writing from his own perspective anyway, that he doesn’t know where the idea came from.
He can do that because he may be dead but the culprit was hot dogs and that gives him an out to make a dumb joke and change the subject and keep things the way they are now.
And if it was anyone else he would have. But it’s Julie. And he’s Luke.
She can read his handwriting.
And she can read him too.
If he lets her.
“You know how you said your dad made you talk to someone after your mom died?”
She tilts her head, clearly not expecting this question. She answers it anyway.
“Dr. Turner,” She nods. “Three times a week for a while.”
“Did it uh…” Luke swallows hard, his throat suddenly impossibly dry considering he was pretty sure he wasn’t actually producing spit anymore period. “Did it help?”
Julie’s hand twitches in her lap and he can tell she is deciding whether she should touch him. He reaches out to toy with the frayed edge of her jeans where they burst open at the knee. The answer to whether Julie should be touching him is always a resounding yes in his opinion but he also wants to let her come to him. It hasn’t been that long since they’ve even been able to touch each other and despite how much they crave it there’s a lingering awkwardness after all the build up.
“Talking to someone?” She asks carefully. “Yeah, it did. After a while I felt like I needed space to sort through things on my own but by then I was able to talk with my dad and Flynn too.”
He nods, keeps his eyes firmly on the hole in her jeans.
“Luke…”
Damn.
He has to look at her when she says his name like that.
He raises his eyes slowly, meeting her soft ones with nerves he can’t quite place.
“You know you can talk to me, right? Always.”
Her question is so small and yet so big at the same time. Such a simple offer containing such a big promise.
Always.
Wasn’t that the problem?
His always might not line up with hers.
He could forget that fact for a bit when the band was hanging out and laughing over nothing or rocking a crowd’s face’s off or when Julie was smiling in that certain Julie way that seemed reserved only for him.
But he couldn’t forget forever.
And he couldn’t promise always.
So where did that leave him?
“Luke?”
She breaks him from his thoughts again and he pushes past his caution this time, reaching out to link her hand with his, their fingers slotting together effortlessly despite the way one of them isn’t really there.
He isn’t really there.
Is he...real?
Luke suddenly feels a strange rush of panic, all of the thoughts he’s been pushing aside for months crashing through him at once.
He must have squeezed Julie’s hand inadvertently because he sees her flinch.
“Sorry, sorry,” He says breathlessly (not that he needs to breathe, he’s breathless, literally, he’s dead), drawing her hand up to press an apology against the skin there, his lips lingering for a long moment before he pulls away.
She’s not unaffected by his sudden actions, the way her eyes widen for a fraction of a second is proof enough of that, but she’s also determined and she doesn’t let him off the hook.
“Talk to me, Luke,” She says like an order and a request and a prayer all at once.
And he can’t deny her anything.
Not even this.
“I’m fine, I am...it’s just...I’m so happy that we ended up here with you Julie no matter what. I need you to know that ok? I just..I don’t...I don’t want…”
She waits as long as she can for him to finish that sentence but when he doesn’t seem prepared to, she leans closer, squeezes his hand, gives him that last push off the cliff he’s been teetering on the edge of for months.
“Don’t want what?”
“Don’t want to be dead.”
The words escape him in a hurried rush, one blending into another until it sounds like one long syllable of pain rather than a proper sentence. Still. He’s pretty sure the message got through.
“I know,” She says simply, her eyes sad but her touch impossibly gentle as her free hand comes up to cup his cheek. “I know, Luke, I know.”
He doesn’t realize he’s crying until she’s brushing his tears away with the delicate tips of her fingers.
And maybe he is real, at least a little bit if his eyes can still muster up the ability to leak like this and damn it why is that what he’s thinking about right now when the girl, the living girl, he loves is waiting for him to say something.
He wants to think of the perfect thing but what ends up coming out leaves a lot to be desired.
“Julie...I love making music with you. I love y...I love being in your life. But I’m dead. And maybe...maybe it would be better…”
“No,” She cuts him off firmly, gripping his chin lightly to turn his face more fully towards hers. “Whatever you think you’re about to say, the answer is no.”
“Julie…” He tries again.
She’s already shaking her head.
“I don’t care if you’re about to suggest some noble sacrifice or push me away or blame yourself for something...just...don’t.”
Any protest he has prepared dies on his lips, the slightest quirk of a smile taking their place even as a few stray tears make their way down his face.
“Ok,” He agrees simply.
Julie brings her other hand down to grip his knee as though she’s trying to keep him with her by anchoring him physically, making him part of her, making him real.
And that’s that.
It takes time.
A hundred aborted conversations with half confessions and unspoken requests for comfort and love freely given if not freely spoken.
But eventually he gets used to talking to Julie the same way he got used to writing with Julie and singing with Julie and falling in love with Julie.
So steadily he doesn’t feel the progress until one day he looks up and there’s no going back, not that he would ever want to.
He’s dead.
He can’t get around that.
He ate some bad hot dogs, and that will always be a little bit funny. It’s also sad and scary and tragic.
He’s dead.
But he’s also so alive.
He can’t promise always but he can promise as long as I’m here.
And he does.
Over and over and over again.

AU where Steve who wander around the world after being thawed runs into Bucky who escaped hydra earlier and living a quiet life in some far away country. Maybe Bucky is carrying a stack of books or flowers and they collide, maybe he is a barista or maybe Bucky stops his car for a hitchhiker. Their reunion is no less surprising but a lot more beautiful.
All of these are absolutely amazing and I cannot--- Every single one of these is just great, and I could daydream about this all day I swear😭.
Bucky stopping his car for a hitchhicker are you kidding me???? Imagine if it’s also raining and really cold and Steve is shivering and tired, curling up in the warmth of Bucky’s car, not realizing who the long-haired man beside him even is until later... gahhhh. I can just imagine so well Bucky being all worried for Steve because he’s cold and wet and sfsjdfhsjdkfhsjf.
OR fsfsjjfsfs Bucky carrying a stack of books and they collide, and then they look up at each other and Bucky, having little memory, just goes to apologize while Steve is staring at him, jaw dropped because that’s Bucky, and gahhhhh
And then you say “flowers” and I go cri because FLOWER CROWNS sifhdkfjksfhsjkdfhskjdfhs. I love flowers and flower crowns they’re special to me.
I could not pick between these, so I jabbed my finger randomly at the screen and I got ✨barista✨. I made Steve the barista cus I needed Bucky to walk in, but let’s get this party started bby✨
|X|
There was something about the guy behind the bar.
Standing there behind the counter, tending to things so unimportant in the grand scheme of the universe, he had a certain youthfulness to him, as if he was just entering the peak of his life, and yet he looked many ages old, as if there was little that surprised him anymore, having seen many horrors and lived happy memories. He looked a little lost, a little unsure, and yet so determined. It was as if looking at a person who had no idea what to do, but they were determined to figure it out.
He had not meant to stop, really, had not meant to still in his steps and turn his head just so, throwing a second glance at the guy he had briefly glanced at a moment before. It had been nothing but his usual observation of all present in his vicinity, nothing but a remnant of his installed thoughts that everything and everything could be a danger, and he needed to have visual on all around him, but this guy caught his attention.
Truly, he had not meant to enter the coffee stop, wearing his cap low over his eyes but keeping his posture relaxed and open so he would not look like a robber, and he had not meant to actually sit down at one of the tables while he had other things to do. His backpack stood beside his leg, the heavy weight keeping him at least somewhat grounded, and he blinked a few times before looking back at the bar.
The guy was still there.
His hair was a mop of honey blond strands, framing his eyes that were blue like the water bottle caps in the fridge behind him. Even from a distance James could see his pink lips move as he spoke to the people around him, curling into a smile so gentle something in his chest just... clenched. Like a hand reaching into his rib-cage and seizing his heart, almost painfully so.
Did he know this man?
He had met people before he was supposed to know somehow, usually family or friends of the victims he had caused. Some of them recognized him as they had crossed the Winter Soldier, or even locked eyes with him, but had never been the intended target. This man did not look like someone who might know one of the Soldier’s victims, but he could never know for sure. There were still many gaps in his head, and it was difficult to get a good grip on it most of the time.
One of the men behind the counter threw his head in his neck as he barked out a laugh. "Keep dreaming, Rogers!" he said, and he slapped a hand on the blond’s shoulder.
Rogers.
He knew that name.
It was certainly not an unpopular name in the US, so it could be anyone, really, but how many Rogers’ were there with blond hair like woven gold and eyes like the afternoon sky and deep sea made love to each other? Certainly not that much, right? He was short on data these days, with no one left to forcibly stomp it into his head. He did not miss the force, the hurt, the pain, but sometimes he did miss the simplicity.
Perhaps he had once met a target who looked like this man, or perhaps he had seen this man on a mission long ago, but could not remember because of the many wipes. Though that did seem unlikely because he had been free for around three years now, and this guy was only barely in his twenties. It had to be something else.
The vision of a scrawny blond with blood sticking to his noise and a feral shine to his blue eyes shoved itself to the front of his mind, demanding its place in his thoughts like it had done many times, but James pushed it away. He pushed away the laugh like bells, the attitude like nothing else, the thin hand brushing away a set of bangs that kept flopping into his eyes. He pushed it all away.
That was years ago.
Still, James got up from his chair, and approached the counter.
For a reason he could not explain, he reached his hand to his head and took off his cap. Perhaps it was not the best idea, as there was a camera hung up in the corner of the room, but he risked it. SHIELD had his back now, his name was being cleared, he was off the books and technically he did not exist.
When he moved into the frame, the blond soon noticed him and flashed a polite smile. "Hi! How can I help—"
Full stop.
It was not a look he got often—or, at all, actually. It was a look of disbelief, surprise, and raw, utter, unbridled shock all at once. As if he was staring directly into the face of a ghost. Rogers’ lips moved, but no sound came out. His eyes were wide like dinner plates, cheeks pale and jaw slack. James tilted up his head a little, gazing back curiously as a small frown formed between his brows. Not entirely the reaction he had been expecting.
Then, finally, the kid seemed to regain the ability to speak, and he whispered out a single thing. "Buck…"
He knew that name; he had read it in a museum.
"I go by James now, actually," he said, before he could stop his stupid mouth from running. He had spoken almost unnaturally slow for his doing, as if he could not quite find the words and hesitated before he said them. Perhaps he did. He had never really done that before, but perhaps this was a special case. A special case with a special person.
"Oh," the blond said, blinking a few times fast, as if unable to believe what he was seeing. He probably did, judging by this reaction.
"But," James said then, "After hearing it from you, I think I like Bucky better."
A short pause fell between them, the sound of humming machines and the faint murmur of people in the background the only thing to disrupt it. Perhaps they knew each other better than James originally thought, though he was not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. The color only slowly returned to Steve’s cheeks— Steve?
Steve Rogers.
He had read that name in a museum too.
Just as James – Bucky? – wanted to say something again, Rogers beat him to it with a harsh sigh of disbelief and a look of near desperation. "I thought you were dead. Are you… dead?"
"I don’t think so," James answered, "But my memory’s a little foggy. Do we know each other?"
Rogers nodded, lips still parted and eyes almost pleading, though James did not know what they were searching for. For him. The skinny blond tugged at his sleeve again, grinning widely with a gap between his front teeth. A woman called at them from across the street, an apron tied before her skirt, and they went running towards her. The blond coughed, a deep and scrapy sound, as if he was sick. He had a name.
"Steve."
It was only when Rogers said, "That’s right" that James realized he had said the name out loud. It was correct. Steve Rogers. Steven Rogers. Steven Grant Rogers. Why did that name ring so many bells and had his heart beat a notch faster?
Because it was the scrawny blond in his head.
"Wanna get a coffee later?" Bucky asked, "To talk and try making sense of this?"
Steve nodded once more, the shy hint of a smile curling around his lips. "I’d like that."

On the Baratie, Prologue - a One Piece Mermaid AU Text Story
Thanks to everyone who sent in their opinion on the East Blue stories poll! I think Sanji’s had the most, so we’re starting off with more Baratie!
While there’ll be a continuation, here’s a bit of prelude, because they need a different reason to go to the Baratie. The ASL Pirates already have a cook after all!
Like a prologue to On the Baratie, Part 1
~~
When Thatch makes up his mind to accompany Ace back to East Blue, he knows that there's one place he wants to visit no matter what.
He's only been to East Blue once, and it was honestly ages ago, and he doubts there'll be another chance in the near future. Not many opportunities to visit the weakest Blue as a commander in an Emperor's crew, after all.
And while Thatch doubts he'd travel halfway around the world for the sole purpose of visiting this spot, he's lucky. Because on this particular trip, it's practically along the way. They're passing right by the area on their way back to re-entering the Grand Line, so there's no way in hell he's letting this slip by.
It's the only request Thatch has made on this journey, and Ace and Luffy, who are the Captains and therefore technically get to decide where they go, have no objections. Luffy's already bobbing up and down in excitement, despite their guides estimating that they still have a ways to go.
"The Baratie, huh," Ace grins. "Never heard of it, we didn't pass by our first time through, did we Deuce?"
"You've never heard of it because you lived in the middle of nowhere, in a jungle with barely any contact with human civilization," Deuce says pointedly. "Most people in East Blue at least know of it, it's kinda famous."
Ace just shrugs, and Luffy whoops as the movement of his shoulders momentarily boosts her higher. Ace indulges her and repeats the movement more aggressively until she's bouncing, and Deuce sighs. The two captains' attentions have shifted, and now they're preoccupied by the most important topic of all: food.
"Food~!" Luffy sings, hopping from one arm to the other as Ace switches to spinning her around, and Deuce has to duck to avoid her tail. "Yummy yummy food at a restaurant! It's gonna be amazing!"
"It really will be amazing, if Zeff hasn't lost his touch," Thatch agrees, and Luffy and Ace cheer. "I've never eaten at this restaurant of his, but I was a fan of the Cook Pirates when I was a kid."
His expression darkens, and Ace stills, recalling that Thatch mentioned they all died or something.
"Sucks what happened to them," Ace offers.
But Thatch just shrugs. It was around a decade ago, and shit happens out at sea. "I'm just glad Zeff survived. He'll have trained the new cooks well, and it'll be funny to see the old man actually settled down as a civilian."
Thatch was still a teen the last time he saw Zeff, who was Captain of the infamous Cook Pirates back in the day. They were always picking fights, and picked the wrong one with Pops, and predictably lost. Pops let them live, and they had a grand party, and Thatch remembers being captivated by their culinary expertise.
Thatch chuckles to himself, and the two brothers look at him curiously, blinking with adorably similar expressions.
"I just remembered, Zeff tried to scout me. Pops wasn't thrilled."
Ace barks a laugh, hefting Luffy into a more comfortable position before she suddenly squirms out of his arms. Luffy makes a grabby motion towards Thatch, and Ace obligingly if reluctantly moves closer to let her swing up onto the taller man's shoulders.
Thatch perks up at the sudden attention, because it's not every day that the little mermaid chooses to climb someone other than her brother. Thatch knows she doesn't need it, but offers her a hand to get settled more comfortably, which she takes with a pleased little purring sound that makes his heart skip a beat. Thatch pointedly doesn't look at Ace, but he can still feel his burning gaze.
He's not sure what prompted the sudden transport transfer, but suddenly Luffy's leaning forward over his shoulder to peer directly into his face, and she's close. Thatch tries very hard not to blush.
"But if the Zeff-dude cooks are that good, are they better than you, Thatch?" Luffy asks, eyes wide. "That can't be right, because Thatch's food is the best in the world! Better than even Makino's!"
Those words do make Thatch flush crimson, and Ace snorts. Thatch ignores him, too busy trying to control the warmth bubbling up inside his chest.
Thatch doesn't think he's arrogant, but he also isn't unused to his food being praised. As ungrateful as most of his brothers back aboard the Moby usually are, he's still the head chef who leads the culinary division of their entire fleet, and it's a position he's earned. He's personally trained and assigned all of the cooks on every Whitebeard ship. He knows he cooks well.
But there's something special about Luffy's unique brand of painfully genuine praise. Even though they've been traveling together for a few weeks now, she never gets bored of singing her appreciation at every mealtime with, if anything, increasing enthusiasm. It's like every time is her first time trying his food. Thatch in no way needs her compliments to adore her, he was besotted far before she even knew he was a cook, but boy does he appreciate them, and he doubts he'll ever really get used to them.
Thatch has been called the "Best Cook in the World" by many, and he'd accepted their words politely. But to hear them from Luffy feels like the highest honor he can ever attain.
Thatch feels unbearably fond as he reaches up to fluff Luffy's hair, and she leans into his hand, eyes curving up into slits like a happy kitten, her tail curling back and forth at his back.
Ace cheerfully ruins their moment.
"We'll just have to see, Lu, and maybe if you like their cooking better, we can ditch Thatch and kidnap one of their cooks." Ace leers like the evil little shit he is, and Thatch gasps with exaggerated indignation.
"No, no!" Luffy boos her brother, clinging to Thatch like he's the embodiment of all the meals Ace had threatened she'd lose, before she swings her tail around to smack at Ace none too gently until he grudgingly raises his arms in surrender.
"If we like their cooking, then we can keep Thatch AND kidnap one of their cooks!"
"Lil Seastar, you're not satisfied with just me, even if my food is the best in the world?" Thatch teases, and sticks his tongue out at Ace when he scowls. The young Captain isn't so thrilled with Thatch's new nickname for his baby brother, and Thatch thinks it's fair revenge for him being mean.
"Thatch's food is the best!" Luffy cries again, and Thatch glows. "But if we steal a Zeff, then we have two cooks, which means more food!" She nods, pleased with her conclusion. "More food is always good!"
Well, she's a little confused, but her point is made. They hopefully won't steal Zeff himself, as Thatch doubts he'll be happy to part with his beloved restaurant, but perhaps nabbing one of his assistants isn't a terrible idea.
While handling even Ace and Luffy's appetites is no problem for Thatch, who's used to feeding the entire Moby Dick, some company in the kitchen might not be bad.
(And, a voice whispers in his head, that they'll need a cook that Thatch approves of when he inevitably has to leave to return to Pops. It's a voice Thatch ignores, so that he can enjoy this moment, for now.)
~~
~~
I don't think it's actually ever officially stated whether Thatch's Division is actually in charge of dining, but there are other divisions that are specified, so I thought it would be interesting, so I made it that way ^ ^;
(Edit: Actually it IS explicitly stated that the 4th Division is in charge of dining, this is canon and not just a headcanon whee~!)
And if Thatch as the head of the cooking division, then to me it makes sense that he'd be insanely good at it, not just your average chef. Because I mean, they're the Whitebeard pirates. And sure, they're not as food-centric as the Big Mom Pirates, but the WBs always have quality. Cooking, I feel, is a lot more subjective than say, "Strongest Swordsman in the World" but I don't think it'd be a stretch to say that Thatch is Up There.
This isn't at all to shit on canon!Sanji or his cooking which is probably also insanely good, but Sanji's a lot younger, and the places he's been, the people he's learned from, and the people he's cooked for are far more limited. He, like everyone else, is learning rapidly by stepping out into a far larger world.
Thatch, in comparison, has been on the Grand Line for a loooooong time, traveling with the most infamous crew currently in existence, and probably has picked up a LOT of things from a lot of people. While he doesn't have an official canon age, given the ages of the other Commanders (Marco 45; Jozu 42; Vista 47), I'm putting him at 41 here. That's decades of difference in experience.
It's one of the reasons why I think exploring Thatch and Sanji's mentor-rival relationship in this AU could be so much fun, because think of how much Sanji could grow with someone like Thatch in the crew.
Luckily, Sanji's dream is to find All Blue, not to defeat the cooking equivalent of Mihawk in Iron Chef Grand Line, so outside of fighting for the heart of the love of their lives, I think they can get along quite well ^ ^;
(also do u like his nickname for Lu. I had to consult a friend. But I think it's beginning to stick for me ^ ^;)
As always, any thoughts or comments make my day! Thanks for reading <3

PLEASE do in depth analyses of all of the houses for your quiz I was enraptured reading the gryffindor one and I didn’t even get gryffindor
JUST FOR YOU ANON, I am going to compile the sort of Final Breakdown of every house, in my opinion, that you get at the end of the quiz now. Theres more in-depth analysis of specific questions under each house’s tag on my blog, and you can feel free to ask more specifics of course bUT here is the masterpost of that c:
A Hufflepuff is, unlike a Ravenclaw or a Gryffindor, an internal house. I know what you must be thinking, “how can you be the house of loyalty if you’re an internal house?” Puffs have a small network, Their People, maybe friends, maybe family, maybe friends who are family, maybe an assortment of small pets or animated characters. While Slytherins also have Their People, they have resources and associates to draw from when their bored, whereas the term associates exhausts a Hufflepuff. Spending time with people they don’t love doesn’t ever sit quite right, although they will often do it in an attempt to make folks happy. Hufflepuffs yes, are a house of kindness and of love, but unlike Gryffindors when it comes down to it they don’t have to go out of their way for kindness and love. Gryffindors will seek out situations in which they can do good. Hufflepuffs good is smaller (not lesser) in which they will do as much good as they can for the people directly in their line of sight, but when granted with the great expanse of the world it is easy for them to shrink in on themselves and not be able to cope. That said, they have so much love to give out, and will often want all their love in one place, slightly selfish but mostly excited collectors of people. If your version of the ideal future is a vague image of all the people you love in your house for [insert holiday] that is a very Hufflepuff sentiment. Hufflepuffs, like Gryffindors, are inherent/intrinsic worth folks. Hufflepuffs know who they are, or at least how they define themselves. Their moral code may not be their local government’s law (and actually very often isn’t), but it does exist and is rigid, and puffs won’t go against it unless incredibly pressed. This is a point of contention with Slytherins and Ravenclaws, and even Gryffindors who feel like they have to perform/validate their identity and choices through others. Hufflepuffs are themselves, and no one else, completely and quietly. They love their People. They want to build a home for them. That isn’t to say that puffs are necessarily gentle pushovers. A huge component of Punk and Anti-fascists align themselves with Puffs because they are So themselves and So invested in the safety and well-being of their people and community. Like slytherins, hufflepuffs often know/feel they’re weird, and tend to relish in finding people as absurd and lovely as they are. They will forgive people, possibly too much. But quietly, they will shift the little orbit of the world around themselves to be a little kinder, a little gentler, for them and the people they love. Be kind to yourself. You do not have to be any bigger than you are.
Slytherins are linked to identity, changing themselves to meet their needs and the wants of the world around them. They have specific people that are Theirs, and their circle of Actual Trust may be rather small, even if their friend/associates/resources group is a wide network. Slytherins are tied to wanting, craving, and not necessarily in a bad way or in a way that’s “ambition”. Slytherins are a house made up of people who want something or someone or some goal desperately or are made up of a myriad of little wants, but also struggle with the idea of worth and whether or not they have done enough to deserve the things they want. Sometimes, these wants are secret. Slytherins are often caught up in this wanting and this worth, and cannot see that they are already loved, completely and wholly, for who they are. When you care for someone you care for them with all of you, you are inherently a protective house like hufflepuffs for those that you care about most, and for all your wanting so so so many of you are beautiful creators (the worlds and story ideas slytherins have just roaming around in their brains?? amazing!). My advice to slytherins, if I can give some without being asked hahaha oops, is to recognize that for all the shapeshifting of the self you do, you can be exactly who you want to be, if you just give yourself permission. Who would you be in a dark room without any mirrors? How would you dance? How would you dress, for just yourself? Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to change your life tomorrow. It just means, sometimes, starting in little ways, take back a little bit of ground from the world. “This part is me. This part is mine. You aren’t allowed to have it.” It can be quiet. But you are worth so much, and you are yours. You are just as much of a person as anyone else, and have already earned love, because you never had to earn it in the first place.
Gryffindors believe in innate worth, innate characteristics, sort of your personality is that way because That Is Who You Are. Similar to hufflepuffs in this way, anti-slytherin experience haha. Gryffindors, unlike Hufflepuffs, are an external versus internal change maker. Because of this, they are often more broadly idealistic than hufflepuffs (think range, although they both hold their core values very deeply, hufflepuffs are on a smaller more condensed scale whereas gryffs will spread themselves thinner. Puffs do not have to change the world, rather they create a Home in which to put their world into, whereas a lot of Gryffindors struggle with feeling that they aren’t doing Enough, not Enough good, not Enough love. That the failures of the world are in part because they haven’t done enough to help personally). Gryffindors are very solid with their identity. While slytherins/ravenclaws will see their body/their reflection in a mirror, a scientific fact of life or something they wish they could/can change and shape, Gryffindors (with some exceptions for gender, trauma, and mental illness) tend to be confused that there are answers other than “I see myself in the mirror.” However, Gryffs can be performative, because while they see themselves, they need to be told that they are going in the right direction, they need to be loved, they need to help. Gryffindors will lose themselves a bit in an empty room, in isolation, moreso than hufflepuffs or ravenclaws. They create and change the world around them FOR the world around them, and so the world can look at them and say “okay, you did it, its okay now.” In this way, they are closest to slytherins, seeking validation, seeking a legacy, even though they may not even do it/realize its for themselves. They do good, or they try to, based on how they have defined it for themselves. They will care for you with all of them, if you earn it. They will hold you. But the voice in their head says “am I sure that this is what good looks like. Am I sure that this is enough.” From your friendly neighborhood Hufflepuff, sometimes doing what you need to take care and save yourself is the best thing for the world. Maybe cook something, have a lil dance party. You are an important part of the world. Start small, and love that part the most. You can add on from there c:
Ravenclaws shape the world around them, and create, in order to create a world that better suits themselves and their goals, rather than Slytherins who shape and create/recreate themselves to suit the world, meaning they are an external house, creating and impacting in the world around them rather than in themselves. Unlike Gryffindors, the other external house, Ravenclaws do not feel as much pressure to be seen in a sort of grand legacy or entirely shape the world around them. They give and seek knowledge and creation because, in a very basic sense, they feel like they need to. In a way I’ve said it “I could not write poetry for 30 years and that wouldn’t mean I’m not a poet. I am a poet. That does not change.” But Ravenclaws will get restless if they don’t create if they don’t learn. Their legacy doesn’t mean that the whole world will remember them forever. Its that they will create/make/do something that will matter to even one person enough that they will be remembered. A lot of Ravenclaws feel tied to their Ravenclaw identity because they don’t quite know who they’d be if they weren’t the ‘intelligent one’ if you will. But Ravenclaws sometimes forget that they create beauty every day, learn things new and small every day, without even meaning to. Ravenclaws believe identity is created/forged/remade constantly as information is gathered, and often try to seem neutral, scared of sharing an opinion unless they’ve thought it through completely and are certain they should stand by it. Ravenclaws are often searching, looking for something bigger than them, as almost to prove they are small in comparison. Sometimes the best thing a Ravenclaw can do is realize that all those wonderful books and poems and pieces of art that make you dream of a fantasy world were made in this world. This place, so full of love, that gave them to you in order for you to love it back. A lot of ‘gifted kids’ put themselves in Ravenclaw, without realizing that it was the rest of the world that put them in Ravenclaw, and not something that they chose. If that’s the case, maybe now is the time to ask yourself who is it you want to be? The self is a construct loves, and a uquiz doesn’t define you. You define you. You’re so good at creating Ravenclaw friends. Create you. You’re already magnificent. You’re already worth it. Now its time to look at yourself and give some love to that self, to ask it what it wants to be. You are, more than anything else, your greatest masterpiece.

A Magic Kingdom - Spencer
OKAY DISNEY WORLD!SPENCER. I JUST MADE THIS ESPECIALLY FLUFFY BC I HAVE BEEN WRITING SO MUCH ANGST. i just wanted to make someone smile. so if one person smiles, writing this was worth it.
warnings: none. it’s just cute and happy and i really love disney.
____________________
“Spence, we’re doing it!” You said, stepping through the final gates of the entry to Magic Kingdom. Before you were crowds of people that made you nervous but there was also Cinderella’s castle.
Spencer grabbed your hand, intertwining your fingers in his. You excitedly pulled him along as his strides kept up with you skipping. You slowed down when you saw that the first store to your left had mickey ears for sale. You pulled spencer, even more, causing him to stumble a little bit but he kept up with you nevertheless. You loved your boyfriend but he could be such a slow walker sometimes.
“Okay, baby. We have to pick something that matches our experience here because who knows when we’ll be coming back.” You stared excitedly at the wall of various mickey ear designs, trying to decide what screamed your name.
You immediately gravitated to the wedding ears because they were so cute. Spencer grabbed the matching groom’s set of ears but he also grabbed a set of sparkly purple ears.
“You always said I look good in purple.” Spencer put them on top of his head, behind the groom's ears, and the two of you walked to the front to pay for them.
You and Spencer had numerous discussions about starting a family together one day but for right now, dating was enough. You loved each other but he was gone so much that you never really got around to talking about possibly getting married for real.
“When’s the wedding?” Anna, the cashier, asked after the two of you put your ears on the counter.
“Oh, we’re not engaged. We just thought they were cute.” You said, stumbling over your words a little bit.
“We’re not engaged... Yet,” Spencer said, correcting you.
He wrapped his arm around your shoulders and lightly squeezed you into him. Anna smiled so brightly at the two of you as she handed you your ears and receipt.
“Okay,” You started, adjusting your ears on your head. “Next up is Cinderella’s Castle!”
The two of you walked down Main Street to see the infamous Disney castle right in front of you. There was a stage in front where there was a performance about to happen and Spencer already knew you were going to pull him to the front of the stage area with all the little kids so he just let it happen.
The musical number was going on when suddenly, Cinderella walked out from behind the stage, pulling you and Spencer up the stairs to dance with the cast. You were having such a blast and then the music dimmed and you whirred around to see what Spencer was doing. At first, you didn’t see him, only finding the faces of disney characters until you noticed they were pointing at something. You looked down, not processing what was going on.
You looked down to see Spencer on one knee, holding out the most gorgeous ring you had ever seen. Spencer had his sunglasses tucked into his shirt and was staring at you with the most hopeful puppy eyes you had ever seen. You wanted to start crying.
“Will you make me the happiest prince alive?” He asked.
You heard the crowd “aww”ing in the background but it still didn’t register. Your boyfriend, who had just talked about how he wished he had more time to spend with you the day before, was asking you to spend the rest of your life with him in front of a crowd of random people, oversized cartoon characters, and a gorgeous castle. It was like a dream you never imagined.
“Yes, yes, yes.” You said, grabbing him to pull him off his bad knee. You didn’t know why the dummy chose that knee to kneel on but he did.
He slipped the ring out of the box, sliding it onto your finger and just beamed at you. You grabbed his shirt, pulling him into the most magical kiss you had ever experienced.
As the show ended, the two of you were led down the stairs by Cinderella and Prince Charming. They congratulated you before they disappeared into the unknown or Disney cast members backstage.
“Grand gesture?” You asked Spencer as the two of you walked under the castle. You couldn’t stop looking at the ring and looking up at Spencer.
He squeezed your hand and smiled, putting his sunglasses back on with his other hand.
“It wasn’t my idea.” He said, pulling you towards It’s A Small World. You had been talking about wanting to go on that ride and it was tame enough for Spencer to sit there and hold you without too much action happening. It was also hot and he wanted to spend time with you sitting down. It’s a perfect reason to go on a little boat ride with you.
“It’s a very Penelope thing to do.” You moved your hand around, watching the sunlight catch in it, making it sparkle.
“She convinced me that you deserved something special since we were here. I was going to wait until dinner. I was going to call it off this morning but we got here and you picked out the wedding headband and I didn’t have the heart. You deserved something magical.” He said, moving forward in line.
The rest of the ride was filled with short conversations regarding the proposal and by the time that ran out, the ride was over.
The Haunted Mansion wasn’t too far away so the two of you wanted to ride that since it was another short and slow ride.
“Do you believe in ghosts?” You asked Spencer, bumping shoulders with him. The ghosts and ghouls around you were bumping around and you were waiting for your turn to go on the ride.
“I do.” Spencer tentatively nodded his head. “I believe that there is a world beyond science and the explicit fact that we exist in. Something like an afterlife but I’m not sure what kind. I think that there’s something more beyond this world.”
You were pleasantly surprised. You didn’t think Spencer, of all people, would believe in ghosts of all things. Sitting next to the dashing young man, you leaned your head on his shoulder. The two of you only separated at the end of the ride when there was supposed to be a ghost in the mirror sitting between you. You looked over at Spencer and saw him smiling. It just made your heart so warm to see him actually having fun.
After some more walking around and a few more rides, you saw the line for Splash Mountain was finally going down with the sun. Pulling Spencer to the ride, he started talking about the history of the entire ride.
“Splash Mountain has been around since Magic Kingdom.” He said, slowly moving through the line. “The theme is deep south but with its roots, there’s talk about changing it to something else.” Spencer looked around at everything and smiled like a giddy child.
“You look happy and excited.” You said as he went through the line singing along to the music playing overhead.
“Did you know that the drop is a 45-degree angle going at 40 miles per hour at its maximum speed?” Spencer bounced up and down a little bit.
“I did not. All I knew was it was really fast and really high.” You said, climbing into the log.
Taking another slow ride around the top level, you finally saw the light to the rest of the world. With that momentary hang, you looked at Spencer and saw a childish glint in his eye as he threw his arms up for the 40 miles per hour drop.
As soon as the ride started, it felt like it was over. You got soaking wet with Spencer and the rest of the log but you didn’t mind.
You were excited to get to the front of Magic kingdom again to get a good spot in the park for the firework show over Cinderella’s castle. Walking to the front, hands swinging between you, he surprised you with two matching balloons. He tied it around your wrist and kissed your hand before holding your hand again.
“I’ve had the most magical day.” You leaned forward on the guardrail while Spencer stood right behind you, his arms wrapped around your waist.
“I’m glad.” He said in your ear.
“And it’s all because of you.” You turned your head awkwardly to kiss him and he wasn’t paying attention so you ended up kissing his cheek, making him smile.
“Every day I’m awake is magical with you.” He said, actually paying enough attention to kiss you.
The fireworks were amazing but what really warmed your heart was the moment a little girl accidentally let her balloon fly away. She was crying so loudly that Spencer immediately took his balloon off his wrist and bent down to give it to her. Her parents were so appreciative and Spencer was so happy to end the day with another smile.
“That’s gonna be us one day.” You said, sitting at the bus stop bench.
“It could be us starting tonight.” He winked at you. You bumped him with your shoulder and smiled.

Yugioh S4 Ep21: Duke Puts on Duel Disk, Immediately Takes Disk Off
So last time we ended, Yugi and Tea were stranded in the middle of an ancient warfield that was hundreds of feet off the side of this cliff topped with a seldom used railroad track.
And yes, this is all somewhere in what should be one of the most populated parts of the Bay Area.
Tumblr media
Amazed that this school uniform can go through such rugged terrain. But then again, last season it got hit squarely with a fireball, so...this school uniform is essentially a Batman suit.
But I just want to point out that Yugi didn’t take the duel disk off before vaulting up this cliff. Tea has a bag youknow...but gotta sweat up the duel disk that our entire world relies on.
It would be very funny if this season ended abruptly because Yami either dropped this thing on the ground and finally broke it, or just plain forgot he needed to charge it’s batteries.
Tumblr media
And so now we just walk...kind of in the direction where they hope Joey and Tristan are?
I do appreciate that although Pharaoh is completely lost in a foreign country, he will not admit it.
(read more under the cut)
On the other side of the tracks, Joey is dragging his Sisyphean stone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please admire that this entire scene takes place somewhere in the Grand Canyon. Like it’s episode 20 and I just still can’t get past how they went to California and didn’t include a single beach.
Mai has decided she’s done screaming off the back of a motorcyle, and has decided to come over to Dartz’ lair to scream where the traffic isn’t quite so bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she just rage quits.
Is this the first rage quit we’ve ever had in this show about games? Incredible.
Also, I didn’t realize you could just quit the end of the world cult in the final hours of ending the world, but I guess it doesn’t really matter much to Dartz. Whether Mai ends up killing Joey or doesn’t end up killing Joey, it’s still a soul in the Leviathan bucket so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media
Now, in the actual dialogue of the show, Dartz tells Valon that Mai’s basically going to get what she deserves and no one here needs to even do anything to change or stop it. But, it was still somewhat surprising that this 10,000 year old serial murderer world destroyer was so down to shell out some relationship advice. Almost like maybe he has somewhat of a fatherly concern for his stupid ass murder boys. Kind of. Sort of.
Enough to try and tell Valon to leave this one alone because she’s gone maniacal pixie dream girl and there’s no coming back from that.
Tumblr media
In order to have motorcycle gangs, you have to have bearable enough traffic for said gangs. That’s why we just don’t have a motorcycle gang problem in real deal California like a lot of 70′s-80′s movies would have you think. They’d only be able to drive in like...one lane, and they’d get constantly cut off and driven off the road by Google buses.
TBH the Google bus is our true modern motorcycle gang, there are just so many of these damn buses. And also, I deleted a lot of text right now when I went off about the ongoing bus war, which is absolutely a thing here. The motorcyclists are just doing me a solid by not being a car on the road and staying out of my lane.
Tumblr media
In a more realistic version of this show, Mai would have never made it to the desert, she’d be too busy watching only one single car able to turn right onto Octavia every light cycle because of all the damn private buses and uber cars flooding our itty bitty one way streets.
And to try and tame Mai, Valon decides to do this...motorcycle stand off?
It’s like he’s trying to catch a feral cat.
Tumblr media
At some point one of them stops, and like I was focused too much on how good their brakes are to pay attention to who stopped first.
Probably Valon, because Mai is completely insane.
Tumblr media
And so then he just...
Y’all I know they had to give Valon motivation to be in love with Mai, but this kids show jumped through so many hoops to make this very unhealthy relationship appear like Valons love was pure and true while still showing that this is a very unhealthy relationship. Kind of a hard balance.
Tumblr media
It’s actually interesting how much work they put into Valon’s very tragic and problematic relationship after they’ve dodged every other problematic relationship this show has brought forth.
Like the villain with a heart of gold is a trope, but it’s a trope that works. There is no hope in the world that this relationship could pan out. They’re not a misunderstood pair like he thinks they are. They’re freakin terrible and they don’t deserve each other. But he’s gonna try and do it anyway.
We get to watch Valon bargain (mostly with himself) about how this relationship (which exists mostly in his head) is going to absolutely work out, because to him, if he feels so intensely, eventually she’s gotta feel the same. Most people haven’t murdered people, but it’s still a very relatable type of situation that the show displays without getting too preachy about how it’s clearly bad news. They just introduce it for the audience to come to their own conclusions, and I was really surprised by that level of maturity.
I’ve been sitting here saying “There’s no way this show could balance Tea with Yugi and the Ghost in his head. There’s no way they can really touch on Kaiba and that paper card. There’s no way that this show knows how to do a relationship because they don’t want to get involved with that weird gray area.” and you know what? Maybe they can.
Like they’re doing it right now. Did they just need 4 seasons of people complaining to go “Fine! I’ll write out the problematic relationship! I’ll do it!” because--this works for them. They finally did it.
Now, I’m not saying it’s Oscar worthy or developed beyond a trope, I’m just saying I’m genuinely surprised to see it on this show, and they should have done it more often. It’s a super weird pairing, but way more interesting than like...all that time we spent with Serenity because I actually have something to look forward to. (which will be when Valon inevitably dies in a ball of tragic glory)
So many romance stories give me nothing to look forward to, y’all. You have to give me something. Like, I’ve been reading a lot of not great romance in my life, and you have to have some sort of time limit in place for me to care about your couple. To have only have so much time before the other person gets married, moves, ends the world--I don't care--but man that time limit is crucial and so much romance just...forgets.
Like Bonnie and Clyde, Romeo and Juliet, and other ill fated couples, Valon and Mai end up being interesting because we just love seeing people fall into pieces. Hell, I just finished watching Tiger King and damn, what makes that show so good is that you are just waiting on that time limit to see how bad it gets. (and it’s crazy, super recommend Tiger King, although it’s very clear that they pushed the drama a little beyond realism but man. Good TV.)
Of course there’s always the chance that maybe Valon just got bored. But, youknow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, it IS a romance on Yugioh, so we do have to very quickly drive a truck through it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man.
What are they DOING here?
It took me kind of a while to remember that Mai would be going where Joey would be living, which is most likely where Raphael dropped off Arthur Hawkins. But, if you don’t remember that fact, this is the most random thing ever.
Like you got this huge ass desert in the Califorizonado mesas, and then BOOM enter Rebecca Hawkins, just omnisciently lording over all of the West and just so ready to fight you.
Tumblr media
Every girl interested in Yugi Muto has this thing where they’re normally pretty chill and then they just snap and get angry as hell.
PS she’s in a different outfit now, but I don’t feel like changing her font color. I’ve had some Photoshop.......incidents.......and I don’t think I have this plaid pattern anymore and I don't feel like making a new one yet.
I mean Valon’s got the green outline on his text, so I figure we’re good.
Also, Rebecca wears a tie clip?
This 12 year old girl wears a tie clip.
And like don't get me wrong, this was 2003-4, alt rock was big, and yes, we did have tiny Avril Lavigne ties at American Eagle. I will admit that I very much considered getting an Avril Lavigne tie at one point in my life, but didn’t want the commitment of needing to pair it with a skirt.
But either way, old man tie clips aren’t alt rock. The only thing that makes Rebecca’s outfit not exactly that alt-grunge Avril Lavigne look is that tie clip. They were SO close to making her look cool. Just so close.
Also the bifocals. But anyway...
Tumblr media
So Valon was going to straight up ignore Rebecca, because he has a warped sense of morality and will not kill a 12 year old (but will kill a 17 year old). But, Mai did ask nicely.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, because of Valons weird sense of morality, he did not pull out the Oricalchos. Instead he pulled out...a new mechanic!
Tumblr media
OK.
Fine, whatever. I don’t go over cards in this show so I don’t have to even worry about this.
And Rebecca and Duke freakin lost, because Duke is never allowed to win. Rebecca may have won if Duke didn’t join this battle with his ass luck, just throwing that out there.
Tumblr media
And Mai is like “wow, Valon is doing a really good job. He’s right, he IS amazing”
and she bolts.
Tumblr media
And back on the tracks, we see another group of our protagonists sprawled on the desert floor.
REALLY lucky that this train track only has one operating train that is currently out of commission because you should not lie down on a track like this. Probably goes without saying that this is a great way to die. But youknow...the world is also ending so sure, why not? Getting killed by a train is probably more pleasant than the Leviathan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, because we MUST talk about commuting, lets see Kaiba’s commute on this huge ass very normal plane.
I know.
Tumblr media
That’s just a normal ass plane.
Even Kaiba needs to take a break youknow? And maybe since he hallucinated last time he drove a plane he decided to just...not drive one for a while. Probably a good move.
On the way, we get to see Seto’s form of parental advice. It was weird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like in the actual dialogue of the show Seto is just SO CLOSE to giving good advice and then just slips in these chestnuts where it’s like...well that’s gonna be like 12 years of therapy for Mokuba in the future Seto, thanks for that.
Also lets welcome back Seto’s dueling jacket. Been a while, big sleeves.
Also, the Aurora Borealis has also hit the plane, which is very Twilight Zone of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
Correct me if I’m wrong but Alister was in Dartz’ room during that convo with Mai.
like...just a few hours ago?
Was that a hologram of Alister in Dartz’ boardroom or did the animation team forget?
Oh Alister.
Also, I just want to point out that the same day Seto sent Roland out to fix his problems, was the same day that Kaiba got hella abducted, just a few hours later. Man, Roland. Turn around for like 2 minutes and Seto’s back into cards, they’re both abducted by cultists, and they’re both half-way across the world to California. It must be hard to be Roland.
Anyway, if you just got here this is a link to read the rest in chrono order. All four seasons.
Hope y’all are staying safe in this Pandemic time, goes without saying. Been a weird couple of weeks, but thankfully the internet is still here to help us all keep sanity.

Lokane Untold Truths
Jane was six the first time it happened. It was mid-December. She’d exhausted every option available to her to complete her mission. In desperation, she threw all caution to the wind and came out with it. “Daddy, what am I getting for Christmas?”
He looked into her eyes and said, “a junior telescope set and that scientist Barbie doll you wanted. Also a young reader’s copy of Pride and Prejudice. I think your mother wants to corrupt you early.”
When he finished speaking he looked shocked for all of a second. He didn’t have long because he’d, unfortunately, spilled the beans within earshot of his wife, who spent the next few minutes berating him while Jane danced in place at the thought of a telescope.
Over time, more incidents like that began to occur.
“Mrs. Mason,” she asked her third grade teacher the day she announced they’d have a sub for the rest of the week, “how come you’re going on vacation now instead of on the weekend?”
“Oh I’m not actually going on vacation,” Mrs. Mason said. “I’m getting a colonoscopy and I need to spend the next few days cleaning out my bowels.”
Everyone laughed as their poor teacher turned bright red and tried to backtrack.
For a while, Jane actually thought it was pretty funny.
“Hey Bobby, how come you won’t go down the slide?” she asked the playground bully.
“Because I’m afraid of heights,” he said. “They make me cry.”
No one took his bullying seriously after that.
One day, it stopped being funny.
“Why don’t you want to eat lunch with me?” she asked Maggie, her best friend in the world since kindergarten.
“Because I don’t like you anymore,” Maggie said. “You’re a weird geek and I want to hang out with the cool kids now.”
Jane didn’t really sit with anyone after that.
By the time she reached high school, she knew something was wrong with her. Or maybe something was right. There were perks to her strange little ability just as much as their were downsides. She’d long since figured out a few things.
Her power only worked when she made eye contact with the target.
Glasses of any sort would not protect them.
Wearing glasses herself would.
Jane couldn’t understand that last one. Perhaps it was a mental block she’d placed on herself to protect her relationships after what happened with Maggie. Or maybe it was just always there.
In her sophomore year, she got up the courage to as the boy she liked on a date (simple yes or no question, it couldn’t possibly go wrong).
“I’d like to, but I can’t,” he said. “My dad beats my mom and I’m afraid to date because I don’t want to be like him.”
The next day, Jane bought six pairs of contact lenses.
For years, she wore them religiously. Nobody ever questioned her. Not in college, not in grad school, not in the desert. Darcy called them lens buddies and Jane didn’t have the heart to correct her.
It got easier to forget about all the chaos her power had caused. She’d remind herself that it could’ve been a lot worse and all things considered, she’d made it to adulthood relatively unscathed. Every now and then she’d forget to put in her contacts and get to hear all about a neighbor’s marital problems or how the overly macho guy at the bar was deeply in love with his male best friend. Otherwise, her days were uneventful and she could almost pretend she was completely normal.
Thor came to her in a storm and they had their adventure.
He came back to her in another storm when an ancient power was (not so) inexplicably drawn to her. That was a bit rough of a reunion. Jane was not exactly happy about his two years of radio silence. Even worse, whatever was inside her had decided it didn’t like contact lenses. They burned like pure fire when she tried to put them back in.
“It’s good to see you,” Jane said, instead of asking where he’d been or any other question she both did and didn’t want the answer to.
He was nice enough to explain, and it was a good explanation. Taking her to Asgard and giving her the grand tour also helped his case.
Jane still couldn’t find the same affection for him that she’d once had, if she had it at all. Their three days in the desert had been a whirlwind of confusing emotions as her entire life was upturned in an instant. Now that they had time to stop and think, Jane wasn’t seeing much more in him than a good friend.
And then came Loki.
Or course Jane knew him, if only in name and face. She got to know him about more closely when she punched him in the face for attaching New York.
“I like her,” he said, smiling evilly at her.
Jane stared at him with her uncovered eyes and got a terrible, but all too tempting idea. “Do you get off on being hit?”
“Not precisely,” he said, “but I do love a woman with fire.”
Jane didn’t know what was funnier, his face or Thor’s. She glanced at Sif and shrugged like she had no idea what was happening and then casually reminded the brothers that they should probably get moving.
The ride out of Asgard was bumpy, and Jane only remembered parts of it. She woke up as they reached Svartalfheim. The Aether called to her, swirling through her with renewed ferocity at the prospect of going ‘home’.
“Finally awake I see,” Loki said, grinning evilly. “That didn’t take long at all.”
“What scared you most as a child?” Jane asked.
“Freya’s cats,” Loki said. “One of them bite me once and I’ve never liked them since.”
Even given the circumstances, Thor couldn’t not laugh. “I knew it.”
If Loki smacked the elves around a little harder than necessary, Jane wouldn’t comment. He was actually kind of gentle with her, even as he shoved her out of the way of a vortex sucking them up.
When he died, Jane actually felt bad for making him expose his secrets like that. Even for someone like him, using her powers like that was just petty. Now that the Aether was gone, those contacts were going right back in. She didn’t even take them out a month later when she and Thor agreed to go their separate ways. It was all for the best anyway.
Late one night, when she been planning another all nighter to finish updated her bridge schematic, she was suddenly overcome with sleep. She awoke in a misty place. Nothing was around for miles, but she wasn’t scared. Nothing could hurt you in a dream, she knew, no matter what the old wive’s tales said.
Even when Loki appeared before her, she didn’t react. Dream or no dream, she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of scaring her.
“Ask me anything,” he said.
Jane blinked her naked eyes. “Is this real?”
“Yes.”
“Are you alive?”
“Yes.”
“How can that be when I saw you die?”
“You saw me lose consciousness, though in fairness, I thought I was dying as well. It seems luck was for once on my side.”
A vision of Asgard appeared. Odin alone on his throne with Gugnir. He smiled warmly at his subjects, though for a moment, his eyes turned green.
“Are you pretending to be Odin?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“What did you do with him?”
“He’s in a retirement home on Midgard. Don’t worry, I chose a nice one.”
“Do you visit him?”
“Once a week.”
“Nice. The orderlies must love you.”
“That wasn’t a question, but yes, they do. I’m a loving, dedicated son in their eyes.”
Jane was fast getting sick of this dream. And she really hated her sneaking suspicion this wasn’t a dream at all and Loki really was alive right now.
“So what now? What do you want from me?”
He stepped closer. “You have an amazing gift, Jane. One which not even I can resist.”
“Thank you,” Jane said. “That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.”
He laughed. “I don’t believe I have you under a spell, my dear.”
“Do you?”
“I don’t.” He smiled. “You are free to speak as you wish, though I am bound to your every whim.”
“What if I asked you to tell me your greatest secret?”
“You know I would tell you. I would have no choice.”
“Would you want to?”
“I would,” he stepped closer. He was so tall and actually extremely handsome. Weird how she was only just starting to notice. “I would happily tell you anything. You and only you.”
Jane swallowed. Even knowing what she could do, he looked so sincere. “Do… do you regret what you did?”
For the first time, he hesitated and all but whispered his response. “I’m starting to.”
“Do you want to make it right?”
“I don’t think I can.”
“But would you try?”
Another, longer hesitation. A quieter response. “Yes.”
Jane nodded. She took his hand and held it tight. “Then when you’re ready to visit Odin again, come find me.”
The dream ended there and Jane was awake in her lab. She stared at the clock and her heart missed a beat. Not even a minute had passed since she closed her eyes. Almost like that whole event occurred on another plane of existence.
‘It did,’ she told herself. ‘In a dream world.’
But did it really?
She heard footsteps behind her, but wasn’t afraid. He was there when she turned around. Not as Odin, but as himself. He had trimmed his hair a bit and donned a suit. Though he held her gaze, there was a hint of trepidation behind his eyes.
Jane stood and approached him. This time, she had only one question. “Why?”
He took her hands “Don’t you see, Jane? I am the God of Lies. You are the Goddess of Truth.” He leaned in close. Jane couldn’t stop him if she wanted to as their lips met. “We were made for each other.”
And that was the God’s honest truth.

On the HIMYM Finale + Deleted Scenes (rewatch)
On my hate of Ted’s relapse in season 7:
Rewatching HIMYM and of course, I’m sad again at how much I loved it sans Ted’s suddenly thinking he’s in love with Robin again after Drunk Train. It pisses me off so much, and which there were comments on how it made sense because Ted was just so down on himself that he had stooped so low as to try to get girls on the train and be so far away from his goal—I would have believed that but the ensuing episodes definitely show this wasn’t the case. Drunk Train was season 7 episode 16. They broke up at the end of season 2 and only had a heart to heart about how difficult the break up was a few episodes later, and casual sex along with screaming and anger mid season 3. Never once in between does Ted actually like her again except when Barney wanted her and he read his letter—which I’ll account for as him being down and logically and/or nostalgically thinking they would work again, rather than current feelings. I would have wanted him to be depressed because being around happy people or people that he’s jealous of or something, because that’s relatable and understandable. But him being upset that Robin was marrying someone that wasn’t him when she never expressed being in romantic love with him for the past 6 years just makes me despise Ted. And I don’t despise him, but when I take a step back, that act makes me really hate him. And like.... Ross in Friends was a horrible human. I cannot vouch for him in that he wanted to be a good human—Ross thought he was a good human when he wasn’t. But Ted really did want to be a good human. And it upsets me that this is where the line is drawn, where he believes he deserves Robin more than Barney, more than anyone, when she never showed interest in him again.
---------------------------------------
A brief touch on my hate of Robin’s character in love:
I don’t hate Robin as a human or a character in general. But I severely hate how she was the writers’ ultimate princess on a pedestal and never thought about how she’s not a prize, but she needs to work for happiness. Never once does she work for any of her relationships. She’s incredibly selfish—and hey, that’s fine because I am and all humans are to a degree, but she’s not allowed to stay selfish and get any and every happy ending. That pisses me off to no end. I agree with the people that say Robin didn’t deserve Ted—but in reality, it was more that Ted deserved better. She never made any grand gesture for Ted or Barney when they both tried to give her anything and everything they had. I’m unsure if in any relationship she put herself on the line. I think after Don, she stopped. I think Don got the best of her, but Don didn’t quite treat her well. Kevin was the best match for her because he helped simmer her crazy and he could be a little crazier with her, but really she didn’t offer anything consciously.
She was unwilling to compromise in season 2, and she never changed throughout—she only revealed parts of her that she kept hidden. The writers made her sane and insane, kind and cruel, and every other paradox so she could fit into anything they wanted and seem rounded out even when she wasn’t. The writers kept her as this ideal girl and never understood that girls can have character development too. (Not that anyone besides Barney really had character development—which is also why everyone was rooting for him, not Ted.) The things she’d give up for Barney, she never cared about. The dogs she gave up for Ted in season 2 were her only attempt at dipping her toes in the water, but then the writers just never made her swim again (not that she should have given away her dogs for Ted). As the series progressed, it felt like she didn’t care about anything. That’s why she was consistently able to swing into a new relationship on the same day after a breakup. Because they made Robin sane enough, no one had to doubt her love and she never had to prove it. But now it all seems like a desperate girl who is afraid to be alone and has no idea what she wanted (continued in next section).
-----------------------------------------
On the deleted Robin x Ted lunch finale scene in 2020 and how it impacts the ending:
Josh Radnor said he hoped the writers kept that in the finale because it showed that Ted wasn’t always pining for Robin when he was with Tracy, and that Robin loved and was thinking about Ted as much if not more. I agree with the first part, definitely not the latter.
Before I discuss how I interpreted that scene, here is how I interpret the two endings of HIMYM vs the ideals of the fans (from my perspective).
The ending where Tracy dies and Ted gets with Robin at the end:
Pros:
The fan theory that maybe this is a happy ending because Tracy gets to be with Max in Heaven, Ted and Robin (and Ted got the kids he wanted and Robin got her career), and Barney and his daughter.
I guess the writers get to use their original footage, but like that doesn’t really warrant a number.
Cons:
Like Josh Radnor said, it makes it seem like Ted was in love with Robin even when he was with Tracy.
Season 8 and 9 were a total bust and a LOT of the footage and most meaningful and dramatic scenes (absolutely EVERYTHING WITH TED) were a WASTE of viewer emotion. Like I legitimately regret giving any fucks about Ted’s emotions, that lying sonuvabitch.
If it is meant to be like Robin and Ted are soul mates and belong together, the ENTIRE SEASON 3-9 made the fans believe that either 1. NO THEY’RE NOT, or 2. soul mates are STUPID and a LIE and not as amazing as Lily and Marshall made it seem. And if not, then it perpetuates that soul mates aren’t a thing.
It makes it seem that if a guy pines after a girl enough, he’ll fucking get her eventually. No one on the face of at least Democratic America wants white guys to get that message, wtf.
By perpetuating Pro #1, it further makes Tracy to be a vehicle for Ted’s children and not really anything else. Kinda ties into Con #1.
The ending where Tracy is alive (actually this doesn’t matter to me) where Robin and Ted don’t get together at the end:
Pros:
The hope and dream and ideal that a soul mate (Tracy) exists at the end of the suffering—the thing that made Ted such a good protagonist—lives on. And is finally accomplished. And we can be happy for Ted, while believing in love and life ourselves. (This is the main fucking point, in contrast to Con #3 of the previous end.)
The reassurance that even if you think you’re in love now and it’s not working out, one day, you’ll GET THE FUCK OVER IT
The hope that all the love you give out will be reciprocated (this is different than #1 for me simply based on Tracy’s personality, rather than the fact that Ted ended up with someone that wasn’t Robin. Because Tracy was kind to him and wanted to make Ted happy. Robin never tried to make Ted happy, she just rolled with the punches.)
The fact that the drumroll, the build up, the suspense of the story led to actual grandeur and a happy end, and not a fake out like the other ending. (Different from the above because this is simply the storyline, and how this way wouldn’t be like a “haha, [the ending] was in front of you the entire time!”)
Cons:
No footage of the kids?
No non-sappy way to end that doesn’t make everyone hate the writers?
No reason why Ted is telling this story to his kids?
Like honestly, while sappy, there is no con to a happy ending
Now, let’s retrace the first betrayal ending with the dinner scene:
Pros:
Yes, it does look like Ted loved Tracy / didn’t pine after Robin in his head. And yes, this was something that killed everyone in the finale and thus was a big thing.
If Ted x Robin occurs, you still get the Pro #1 fan theory.
Cons:
It doesn’t look like Robin was in love with Ted even if she admits to thinking about him. It instead just looks like she regretted her life and selfishly wanted him because he treated her well, even when she never had any intention of giving him what he wanted.
Also the awkward thing about Robin kinda trying to get him back when he has a family and alive wife at that point in time.
If this continued with the Robin x Ted thing, it doesn’t really make it seem that Ted was head over heels magically in love with Tracy during this time. His quote, “Happiness is when you stop thinking about the ifs,” would instead be interpreted as if he settled and didn’t want any risks. And, considering he met her after Robin was married, and had kids with her while Robin was still married, this would further incriminate that thought.  Happiness is not love, but the stability of knowing that this relationship... is stable. Ted, despite having cheated on Victoria when she was in Germany with Robin, has never struck me as a cheater. He has always struck me, even in the lowest and crappiest and sleaziest of times, as someone who wanted to treasure the people around him. The fact that he was unnerved by Robin’s confession because he had Tracy and his family did not feel to me that it was because he loved Tracy, but because it was stable, it was his, and he had stopped thinking about Robin when she wasn’t there.
If Ted x Robin get together still, a la Con #1, I cannot be happy for them. Why? What the writer showed us in the original is that Ted has always pined for Robin. This lunch scene was supposed to dispose of that. But, then, it becomes that Robin wants Ted and Ted is like “I always cared about her and it’s been 6 years and I’m lonely.” And yes, this is much better than the original betrayal ending. But it’s still not a happy ending. Ted gets with her because he’s lonely, not because she’s the “one” anymore. And no one cares about that (and it’ll always be overshadowed by the ANNOYANCE OF TED IN SEASON 8-9). Robin gets together with Ted because she’s lonely, regrets many things in her life, and she knows Ted would treat her well (despite never self-reflecting that she doesn’t offer him anything because he always blindly accepted everything about her). That’s not a happy ending, nor an ending worth giving my feelings for, though admittedly more satisfactory than the original.
Overall, the show is supposed to be about how he meets the mother. How he meets his wife. How he falls in love with her. The audience is wanting to watch him fall in love. And after so many seasons of him being alone, the build up becomes grander. We want to believe that at the end of the tunnel is salvation. That this relatable, kind character will be blessed with happiness and love equal or greater to what he’s given. We like the character, and we want him to be happy. And he was never happy pining after Robin. We want to relate to his struggles, but we want him to be rewarded. We want to believe we too will be rewarded. The original ending didn’t do that. I can’t understand how anyone doesn’t understand the backlash after properly watching the show (and being a sane romantic, which should be the prime audience of this show).
So no, I will never forgive that ending.
-------------------------------
And just because I’m ranting,
On what I think about Robin and Barney.
I honestly don’t care if they stayed married or not. Married doesn’t solve problems between a couple. I don’t like them getting divorced from a conservative perspective, but I also don’t see them doing well in the construct of marriage (which also goes for Robin and Ted, but Robin was always portrayed as sane when with Ted. Though really, she would suck at marriage and kids. When she was with Ted, it was literally just sex. And her being his roommate showed that all non-lust side was incompatible. But I digress).
But, I dislike that the finale gave Barney a daughter as a band-aid and made it seem all right.
I can imagine Robin and Barney always fighting. I can imagine it going as far as a divorce. But I can’t imagine it getting to a point where Barney stops trying and stops caring. Because he tried throughout the seasons and he couldn’t. Why, when he gets her, would he stop. Robin never tried, and I can see her falling out of love because she’s incapable of loving (at least for everyone after Don), only of accepting love and using them as a crutch. But Barney really tried and season 8 showed it in tangible measures. While I understand that a one-way street will eventually reach a dead-end (actually I don’t think that’s true, but for the sake of a lack of a better metaphor), the fact that at that point Robin didn’t step it up makes me hate any ending that would end up with her and Ted even more. Yes, Barney was a pig. But he was able to win over the audience into making us believe that he is capable of loving someone. And Robin never did.
I can imagine Barney giving Robin space if she asked, which includes the divorce. But to try to convince us, the audience, into believing that he stopped loving her and stopped showing it in his side glances and gentle grins pisses me the fuck off. I don’t need them married, I don’t need them constantly together. But they’re a couple where I trust Barney to keep going back to as home.
Also that daughter thing—while cute in theory, Barney had an episode about his previous wing bro having knocked up a girl and being a father and it destroying his personality. I can really only imagine this as being how it winds up. I do think Barney would be a good father. And I do think that if Barney is with Robin, he would not have that chance. But I also think that Barney would always love Robin more than enough to be willing to give that up. Unlike Ted, I believe Barney if he said he’d be willing to give it all up without regretting it for the rest of his life. I hate that Barney wasn’t allowed to remain the metamorphosed character at the end of all of his character development. They had to revert all the things to give him a daughter. They didn’t even give him some sort of back story to how the hell he could fuck up the protection when he had sex with over 200 girls without issues. Yeah I’m salty about the shitty and inconsistent writing/storytelling.
----------------------------
On whether I care if Tracy dies:
Not too much, because I understand that things happen. It does make me sad if we are made to think she and Ted are soulmates, only for her to die early. While I do agree that her early death and making Max her soul mate does sound cute, I refuse to believe for eternity that Robin was Ted’s soul mate, so leaving Ted without a soul mate would also piss me off about this story and basically Ted would be equivalent as Barney knocking up someone, but with a nanny that happens to be the mother of the children. So the answer is no because then we need to destroy the concept of soul mates. So this is why I would like Tracy to live, though I’m not mad at her dying.
Obviously from a storytelling perspective, it would be weird for Ted to tell his kids his whole dating history just to finally skim through his meeting with the mother and she is still alive. But really we gave no shits about why Ted was discussing all these pointless things to his kids, so that continuity isn’t needed if it destroys our hopes and ideals.
If she’s alive, it makes more sense for Ted to talk about the courtship with the mother. If she’s dead, the only reason for him to discuss all his courtships with all the other women would be..... well, in theory it makes sense to show that he’s always loved Robin, too bad that didn’t properly translate in the actual show post season 3 (like really, Robin would have needed to interfere in every relationship Ted had for it to be relevant to the betrayal ending, but that stopped after Stella and there would need to be a time skip to Victoria with inbetweens of Barney x Robin, but ultimately most of Robin’s love life could be omitted. Seriously, if that was the reason Ted was telling the story, then his storytelling skills are shit and he should be at least 65 and retired because his mind is going). And to tell the story just to be like  “I wanna date again” is also nonsense. Basically, all routes are nonsense. Shoulda just scrapped the purpose of Ted telling his sordid past into just him telling a story. Also, getting the kid actors as adults is still hilarious so I think people wouldn’t mind the kids’ continuity over a better ending.

Why you should listen to the Lightning Thief Musical:
First off, if you don’t know this exists, IT DOES AND IT’S AMAZING. This musical has a feel that’s very similar to one of the Starkid musicals, and it’s a lot of fun.
Also George Salazar is Grover in the OG Off-Broadway cast and he’s my favorite soooo
Here are my thoughts on each song:
Act 1
1. “Prologue/The Day I Got Expelled”: It’s basically the first chapter condensed, and Percy’s first lines are “Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood”. As soon as he said those words, I was twelve again, reading PJO for the first time. It got be excited.
2. “Strong”: SALLY JACKSON IS A QUEEN AND THE WORLD DOESN’T DESERVE HER. Also, it really highlights Percy and Sally relationship beautifully and no i didn’t cry while listening to it someone was just cutting onions in my bedroom.
3. “The Minotaur/Weirdest Dream”: This one is more talking than singing, but Percy’s “thoughts” are awesome, and his description of Annabeth is spot-on, and she says “You drool when you sleep”.
4. ”Another Terrible Day”: Mr. D? He’s so funny? Like, he’s spot on, and George Salazar sings for him too and he’s so funny? I just love this song.
5. "Their Sign": I really loved how they played Percy’s resentment towards his dad- it’s not as pronounced as Luke’s, but you can tell it’s there, just like in the books.
6. "Put You in Your Place": CAPTURE THE FLAG UGH I LOVED IT ‘NOUGH SAID
"The Campfire Song": Hilarious, 10/10, it’s so sarcastic and snarky and all the demigods are sassy and I love it. It also just shows how all the demigods, just like in the books, have a little bit of anger towards their parents for not interacting with them.
"The Oracle": Very spooky and Tia Dalma-esque
"Good Kid": My boy Percy needs a hug and some loving stat- the song broke my heart, but it also shows how Percy struggles with who he is.
"Killer Quest!": I love it? The trio forms? My babies?
Act 2
"Lost!”: I love one (1) dumbass trio
"My Grand Plan": Annabeth’s story is basically condensed into this song, and it’s beautiful and heartbreaking. It shows how she struggles with her dad and stepmom, and how she wants to prove herself.
"Drive": Basically just all the adventures along the way, such as the Chimera and the Lotus Hotel, and again, the dumbass trio of dorks whomst i love with all my heart and who i would die for ALSO ARES
"The Weirdest Dream (Reprise)": Very spooky, Luke and Kronos have a chat together
"The Tree on the Hill": I cried again- it’s Grover telling Percy Thalia’s story, and it’s so beautiful
"D.O.A.": AMAZING I LOVED IT also Charon is a strong independent woman and i am here for it
"Son of Poseidon": I mainly love the difference between “Their Sign” and this song, because Percy accepts who he is, and he understands his dad.
"The Last Day of Summer": The twist with Luke happens at the end, and the song feels like the finale, but it’s not. It’s very well done.
"Bring on the Monsters": This finale is perfect, because you know there’s more to come, but it leaves you satisfied. You don’t want a sequel, because you know it’s a battle with Kronos and you know what’s going on.
Okay, final thoughts:
- I really love that every time they introduced Ares/referred to him, rock music interrupted everything else and changed the tune
- Also, Mrs. Dodds has this weird southern accent that’s actually hilarious? i was not expecting it, but it somehow works
I just really love it, and anyone who’s a PJO fan DEFINITELY needs to listen to it, because it’s incredibly book-accurate and deserves a ton of attention. I fell in love with it as soon as I listened to it, and I have to say that my top three songs are “My Grand Plan”, “Son of Poseidon”, and “Bring on the Monsters”.
So please, check it out, and feel free to let me know what y’all think!

Shazam Week Prompt 2
I'm a day late and expect to do again, but I'm not quitting!
Heres prompt 2: Holidays
-
Halloween had always been one of Billy's favorite holidays.
Before he was Captain Marvel, he would spend the day at the Fawcett Park Market, getting his face painted in preparation for trick-or-treating. The amount of candy he snagged would last him weeks, even far into December if he controlled himself.
Before he managed to permanently escape from his Uncle Ben, Billy enjoyed Halloween for the chance it gave him to be far away from the man. At least for the night. When he returned, he'd always have to hide a majority of his stash in his room, lest his uncle throw his entire loot into the garbage.
Ever since becoming the Champion of Magic, however, Billy found no time for Halloween shenanigans anymore. He had a responsibility to uphold, civilians to watch over, monitor duty to attend.
Billy Batson wasn't a kid anymore.
"What do you mean, you're not going out? You're thirteen years old! Go throw eggs and TP at some old tosser's house, get sick from too much candy, and all of that!"
Billy didn't know where to begin, everything about what he'd said was just...wrong. "John, I'm twelve. And I'm on patrol tonight. Do you know how bad it would be if the League found out I… egged someone's house? I'd be toast!"
But the thought of throwing rotten eggs at his Uncle Ebenezer's house brought on a joy he was ashamed to acknowledge.
On the other side of the mirror, Constantine took a long, contemplative drag of his cigarette. "Do you realize how mad what you just said was? You're twelve and you've got patrol for what? Fawcett? The entire bloody world?"
The familiar heat of indignation, of embarrassment, flared at his cheeks. "So what?"
When he sighed, smoke obscured part of his features, but his blue eyes - clear and crisp and so much deeper than others gave credit for - pinned Billy to his spot. It was an accusing stare. A look that challenged Billy, doubted him, was filled with more condescension than John's words could imitate. It was a look plenty of adults gave plenty of kids when they did something particularly exhausting.
Billy hated that look.
He also knew that John hated the League, that Billy was even part of the League. Against all opinions of him, John was actually quite soft for children, became rather protective and reckless for them. Billy knew John thought of him as a child, heck, the magician looked out for him well enough, and Billy appreciated it, really he did. But…
"Know much about the spirit world and Hallow's Eve?" John asked, thankfully diverting the subject. At Billy's head shake, he continued. "The veil between alive, dead, and undead becomes thin, nearly open. All the planes of existence sync up. Get the most supernatural activity around that time. And I know the lot of em throw one killer of a ball."
Immediately, Billy had perked up, always interested in learning more about the magical community. But at the mention of a party filled with paranormal creatures?
Billy knew the glee on his face was evident as John chuckled.
"Unless, of course," he added, tone teasing, "you're too busy patrolling."
Ah, crap.
-x-
"Are you sure this will work?" Billy asked as he looked at John's handiwork. It was impressive and amazing, and Billy never got tired of seeing magic in action.
"C'mon now, lad, trust me here," he said with a face that did not at all look like John Constantine.
"It's not that I don't trust you, exactly…"
They were currently in New York City, strolling down an alleyway that John was very certain lead into their destination. As they got ready earlier in the day, he had explained that the ball was a public affair, a yearly celebration that warranted total truce once entered. No murderous or underhanded conflict permitted on the property. The event was hosted by an affluent influence within the magical or supernatural community, though it took the effort of some key abilities to pull it off, to ensure the location was safe and secure.
However, just because there was no guest list didn't mean anyone could waltz on in. Unless they were a plus one, a regular human or extraterrestrial could not enter the compound. Afterall, there was still so much that neither knew or understood about the world, about Earth and her inhabitants and patrons from all walks of existence. Only those immersed in the community and its secrets could be trusted to attend.
Though, Billy was unsure how solid a definition of trust that they used.
And then there were certain individuals or groups on a blacklist. No matter if they had attended before or were invited by someone going - once someone was banned, it took a great deal of influence to be welcomed back.
That is, unless someone was clever and crafty enough at magical tricks to sneak in.
Someone like the infamous and definitely blacklisted John Constantine.
"Think of it like any other Halloween party, yeah? Some folks go as themselves and that's fine, but boring, honestly, and others wear costumes. Nobody's gonna rip off someone's mask, right?" John smiled with far too many sharp teeth, with a face that was not his own. "That's how glamour is around these ilk."
It made sense, sure. But still, Billy couldn't help but feel...weird. Don't get him wrong, it was exciting getting to join in on this adventure, but looking into the mirror and instead of seeing himself, or even Captain Marvel, he saw a strange creature. It was creepy.
Once John applied the glamour dust, Billy used his own magic to shape what he wanted to appear as - an aesthetic look inspired by his own Feyr.
With Tawny's help, Billy became a tiger themed witch boy. Pointed ears and a gliding tail, sharp fangs and claws, wild hair and catlike eyes, a magically fitted black suit with striped markings that followed onto his skin, and eerie blood splatter across his hands and face - Billy so wanted to wear this for other Halloween parties.
(He doesn't actually believe he'd ever get the chance, but well, one could dream.)
Though, he admitted, he was sort of jealous of John's glamour. A full transformation into a stylishly decorated demon - large horns, full black eyes, fancy clothing and a grand colorful coat. He looked really, really cool.
"I could've gone as Marvel, you know. Being an adult seems easier for this," Billy commented. It would have also been safer.
Great adventure aside, Billy wasn't stupid enough to ignore the dangers he was getting into. He may be magical inclined, but Marvel was the Champion of Magic. If things went south, he would prefer to have the Gods on his side. And great costume aside, something about attending a party as a kid, albeit a never aging one, seemed like it was asking for trouble. What if the glamour wasn't enough? What if his magic wasn't enough? What if someone saw right through them and realized Billy really was just a kid? If he got blacklisted from the coolest supernatural party of the year before he even turned eighteen, he would never live it down.
"You telling me that you want the entire place in chaos? That's what the Champion of the Gods would do. Half the party would swarm you for autographs and most likely try to pull you into rooms you do not want to go, and the other half would fall over themselves trying to leave the damn place. Some may even risk breaking the truce to get a piece of you."
"I thought that's what the glamour was for."
"A pretty costume can't hide the fact that he's the Champion of goddamn Magic. His energy alone would blind the lot like a beacon of divine fucking light." John stopped them before they reached a dead end wall practically oozing magical illusion. They kept a good enough distance, though he still lowered his voice. "I know you run with the big superhero league, but his reputation goes farther than you've been flying around in his cape. Near everyone knows about the Ancient Champions and their patron Gods, and half of those know about the Wizard and his lofty seat at the center of all Earthly magic. He's a bloody legend down here, so no shouting for your giant fuckall lightning, alright? You don't need to leave here with a massive target on your forehead."
Well, then. This was news to him.
"It'd be nice if you told me this before, you know, instead of when we are literally walking into the lions den!" Knowing that there could be powerfully magical beings who would want to hurt him… that seemed like important information.
"That's why I told you to stay as a kid, kid," John flicked at his forehead, infuriating and condescending all at once. Which wasn't an uncommon thing, unfortunately.
The response was immediate, Tawny's low rumble, warning John Constantine away.
"Yeah, yeah. I get it," he lead them forward and to Billy is felt like walking through a curtain to see what was covered on the other side. "Now, stay within eyesight of me, and don't accept drinks you haven't seen the bartender make. And even then, keep to what you know," John said.
Billy knew what to do, thank you very much. He's had talks with his neighbor Candy, and he's heard older teens whisper at foster homes, and him and Freddy have watched teenage party movies. He knows what to do and unlike John, he doesn't go pissing off every magical being he comes across.
He'll be fine!
-x-
He was not fine.
Billy was very much not fine at all.
He felt sick and nauseous and all he wanted to do was throw up, but he couldn't and that made it worse. Thanks to John's quick thinking, he managed to get them out before Billy's glamour wore off. Though, with how fast John was walking, he was practically dragging Billy along, making the sidewalk blur and the street lights flare painfully.
"That's what you get for accepting a drink from the eternal witch boy," John said, voice teasing. It was salt in Billy's wounds along with everything else right now.
Words seemed to escape him for the moment, so he gagged and spat on the ground at John's feet to let him know how he felt about that.
"Didn't take you for a delinquent," John continued. He sounded more amused and Billy hated it. "Not that I'm judging, mind you. I had my first taste of alcohol when I was ten."
"Didn't know," Billy muffled out. He'd tried beer before, him and Freddy had snuck out with a can each one time. They'd stolen it from one of the foster dad as he lay passed out on the couch. It was the most disgusting thing Billy had ever tasted.
"Yeah, can't blame you there. Mead tastes deceptively sweet. Either way, it was from Klarion and that's where you went wrong."
Okay, he really did not need a lecture right now. It was Halloween and he nearly blew their cover and he may have become an ally to Klarion and they almost got found out by Zatanna and all Billy wanted to do was sleep forever.
Still incapable of words, because talking required thinking and that was not going to happen - Billy groaned.
"No, no sleep yet. Gonna need some water and greasy food first, or you'll be feeling even more like shit come morning. Good thing I know a place and they won't ask questions."
At the mere thought of food, Billy felt his stomach turn and finally threw up. Surprisingly, it made him feel better.
"Hmm. Good thing you don't have monitor duty tomorrow, you're sleeping in. And no patrol, either. Consider it an extended holiday."
Halloween had never been this eventful before, at least at a personal level, but it all honesty, Billy didn't feel an ounce of regret. This was probably his favorite year yet.
Vomiting in the middle of the street excluded.

The Quill Seal Of Approval Awards - The Best Of 2019
Hey guys! I’m still alive!
Sorry for my two month absence. Things have been pretty difficult at home lately. I’ve been having a really hard time at university lately, my mental health has suffered as a result, and oh yeah, there’s a worldwide pandemic going on and we’re all probably going to die!
So thanks to this Coronavirus, my uni has been shut down, which means I now suddenly have a lot more free time. So I thought I’d take this opportunity to catch up on things I’ve missed. Yes it’s once again time to hand out the most coveted and prestigious of awards that every writer, producer and director so desperately craves (or at least they would if they actually knew this existed). The Quill Seal Of Approval Awards. Where I list the very best the creative industry had to offer over the course of 2019. (yes I know it’s now March 2020, but if Jon Campea can release a best of 2019 list in February, then I should be able to get away with it). For there is no greater honour on this planet than to have your work of creative artistry praised and acknowledged on an obscure blog by an anonymous snob. That’s the dream, isn’t it?
First a couple of parish notices. Obviously due to various other commitments, I haven’t had the chance to experience everything 2019 had to offer, so this list will be limited to the media and literature I personally got to experience. So sorry that HBO’s Watchmen TV series won’t be on this list. I know everyone loves it, but I’ve only seen one episode so far (and will be posting a review on that soon) as I’ve only just gotten around to watching it. Also bear in mind this is my subjective opinion. If you disagree with my choices, that’s fine. Go write your own list. I won’t be upset. You have every right to like what you like.
...
But if you disagree with me, then you’re a philistine and a poopyhead. That’s not my opinion. That’s a scientific fact that’s been proven in a lab by grown-ups. Sorry. The truth hurts, I know.

Shazam!
Do you remember the days when superhero films used to be fun? When they weren’t some heavily militarised, dark and angsty loners with all the charm and charisma of a pub toilet at closing time? If you do, then you’re going to love Shazam. A funny and moving film about a kid that can transform himself into a Godlike chosen one figure through space magic.
Joking aside, Shazam is an exceptionally good movie with a strong cast, great writing and a very personal and intimate story about self worth and finding your place in the world. For those who have grown sick of these soulless, big budget, CGI heavy superhero flicks with world ending conflicts that end up meaning nothing in the grand scheme of things, Shazam serves as the perfect antidote.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
I’m very much late to the party when it comes to John Wick. I’ve never exactly had the highest opinion of Keanu Reeves as a credible action star and I’ve always found the Matrix movies to be overrated trash with delusions of grandeur, but after constant nagging from my friend @dicapitoe I eventually gave in and watched the first one. I loved it so much, I watched the second one immediately afterwards, and then the following day I went to see Chapter 3 in the cinema. Now I think it’s safe to assume I’m a fan.
I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to do in-depth reviews of these films at some point, but needless to say, John Wick: Chapter 3 earns its place on this list. Hell, the whole franchise deserves a Quill Seal Of Approval Award. John Wick is a masterclass in visual storytelling and worldbuilding, and Chapter 3 continues this exciting and dramatic narrative with great confidence and skill. Oh and Keanu Reeves, I take back every snide comment I’ve ever said. You sir, are a national treasure. Can’t wait for more :D
Tumblr media
Joker
No! No! Stop! You, yes, you, the one who’s about to comment saying how wrong I am and that Joker is a derivative, dangerous movie. May I remind you once again that this is my list. It’s fine if you don’t agree. In fact I can understand completely why some people really don’t like this film. That being said, I very much enjoyed it and I feel it represents a unique achievement for the comic book movie genre. As superhero movies from The Dark Knight to Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Black Panther have been slowly and steadily proving that these films can not only be socially relevant, but can also be considered high art, Joker represents the genre’s apotheosis. It’s a smart and sharply written film that doesn’t shy away from exploring its themes of mental health, social neglect and narcissism, and it demonstrates the reason why characters like Batman and the Joker have been a staple of popular culture for so long. Even after all this time, we’re still finding new ways of reinterpreting them and exploring them. Combined with Hildur Guonadottir’s amazing score and a career defining performance from Joaquin Phoenix, Joker is truly a force to be reckoned with, much like the title character himself.

Elementary - Season 7
CBS’ brilliant adaptation of Sherlock Holmes sadly came to an end in 2019, but not before one last excellent season.
Elementary has always stood head and shoulders above its BBC counterpart in terms of quality, but personally I always felt that the show never managed to live up to the heights of its very first season with Moriarty. While Moriarty ultimately doesn’t return sadly, we get a great substitute in the form of Odin Reichenbach, a tech mogul who uses social media for his own ends in his misguided pursuit of justice. He serves as a great source of moral conflict for Sherlock and Joan, who have been known to use morally questionable tactics themselves, and is a compelling antagonist. Under showrunner Rob Doherty’s expert direction, Elementary ends on a high as we see the stories of Holmes, Watson, Gregson and Bell conclude in an emotional and satisfying finale. It’s sad to see a great show like this end, but it felt like the right time to stop and I’m glad the Elementary team kept their high standards throughout and were allowed to finish the show properly on their own terms. You will be greatly missed.

The Outer Worlds
Have you heard the news? Single player video games are dead! Nobody wants RPGs anymore apparently! It’s all about ‘live services’ and multiplayer looter shooters. Nobody wants a story driven, single player RPG these days.
Wait! What’s this? A story driven, single player RPG?! And people actually like it?!?! OMG!
Yes, from the people that brought you Fallout: New Vegas comes a new IP that makes a mockery of the AAA industry and their greedy trend chasing. Introducing The Outer Worlds. Set in the Halcyon Colony in the far future where rampant capitalism has taken over and disrupted society, you play as a colonist that’s been recently released from cryogenic suspension and has been tasked with saving the colony from the Board who are hellbent on taking away humanity’s civil liberties and destroying lives all for the sake of profit. The lore and setting is beautifully realised and the writing contains the same wit and satirical charm as Fallout. It also boasts a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, including a very unorthodox vicar and an openly asexual companion. Add to that some super smooth first person shooter combat and a great amount of freedom in customisation and roleplaying, The Outer Worlds proves definitively that single player isn’t dead. Take note Bethesda.
Tumblr media
And there we have it. 2019 is finally over and done with. Now we can finally look forward to 2020. Assuming we’re all still alive by the end of the year :S

My Top 20 Favorite Video Games
(Listed in the order in which I played them)
Pokémon Red Version - Along with my matching red Game Boy Pocket, this was the first video game I owned that was purely mine and not handed down from an older kid. I still go back and replay this every couple of years on that very same Game Boy Pocket or on the 3DS Virtual Console. I know there’s FireRed and a whole series of more modern Pokémon games at my disposal but the original Red Version easily gets the most nostalgia points. Sometimes that’s what it’s all about, no? Banjo-Kazooie - Similarly, the N64 became my first home console that wasn’t a hand-me-down and it came equipped with both bear and bird (complete with “screaming about it on Christmas morning”). After going back and replaying this almost twenty years later I gained new appreciation for how goofy and colorful it is. Treasure Trove Cove is so fucking catchy. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle - From its kickin’ soundtrack to its satisfying controls to its random-ass virtual pet simulator this game has it all. Multiplayer was always pretty exciting too, I remember many an afternoon trying to one-up a friend during a grind race. No 3D Sonic game compares to this if you ask me, although Sonic Heroes and Sonic Unleashed come sort of close in their own ways. What I wouldn’t give for a proper Sonic Adventure 3... Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes - I remember playing this at my local arcade in my youth before eventually getting a port of it for the Xbox 360. The look of its 2D sprites are phenomenal and - if it will help you understand why I love this game - I’m singing “I Wanna Take You For a Ride” to myself as I type this. Metroid: Zero Mission - This was the first Metroid game I ever actually beat, and it was the game that made me fall in love with the series. I love Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Samus Returns as well but I like Zero Mission’s visual style the most. I was so thrown for a loop when Samus lost her Power Suit towards the end of the game but it only made getting it back that much sweeter.  Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - I started playing this one in 2004 but didn’t officially beat it until way later in 2017. For a while I had a pattern I’d go through every few years of “start playing, enjoy it for a while, get lost, and start over for some reason.” Took me thirteen years to get serious about it but it earned its place as my favorite of the 3D Metroid games. I felt so fulfilled once it was complete, like I was achieving a childhood dream. Kingdom Hearts II - I don’t think I would’ve gotten into this game if not for my friend’s suggestion but I couldn’t thank him enough for it. This is another one of those games you only vaguely understand when you’re a kid only to realize how complex and intuitively designed it is in your adulthood. After the long wait, Kingdom Hearts III proved to be pretty satisfying but I just have too much history with its predecessor for it not to win a spot on this list. Jak 3 - Though my interest in this series burned fast and bright, this game still sticks out to me as one of the best I’ve ever experienced. I played the third installment before Jak and Daxter or Jak 2 but that’s fine because it’s the best goddamn one. Driving around in the desert, swapping out gun modules, and taking flight on some janky wings made of light were definitely the highlights for me. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm - I got into this game during the latter period of Wrath of the Lich King but I didn’t feel like an official WoW player until this fiery, grim expansion. It was the first real online game I’d ever played (if you don’t count Neopets and Adventure Quest) that I started as a Night Elf Warrior in a PVP server and ended as a Worgen Hunter in a non-PVP server. Because fuck the Horde, that’s why. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - I got Skyrim on a whim because I literally couldn’t think of anything else I wanted for Christmas in 2011. There was no hype for me, I knew nothing ‘bout no Dragonborns, but I thought “heck it” and dove in anyway. After originally playing it on Xbox 360 and replaying it more recently on PS4 (with a slew of mods) I can say with confidence this game continues to blow me away. I always seem to find something new even though I feel like I know it like the back of my hand. I did get involved in The Elder Scrolls Online later on but Skyrim is still where it’s at. Soul Calibur V - I was first introduced to the tale of souls and swords (eternally retold, of course) through Soul Calibur II and only because you could play as Link on the Gamecube version. Fast-forward to 2012 and I was still on board with its story and cast of characters but its character creation was really what kept me hooked. Soul Calibur VI turned out to be a little disappointing but I definitely got the most out of its fifth installment and I’m guilty of having played for hours and hours on end. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward - What began as a free trial because I was bored turned into a years-long interest in yet another MMO. While the base game was okay it really picked up speed with Heavensward and I was hooked from that point onwards. After a certain point I caught myself not skipping cutscenes and discovered - oh hey - the story’s actually really good. Star Wars Battlefront - I loved this game when it came out on PS4 and used it often to get my insatiable Star Wars fix. Aerial combat was my downright favorite part of the game and I loved smoking some TIE Fighters in an X-Wing or in the Millennium Falcon. Its sequel Star Wars Battlefront II could’ve made this list but EA was being a real dirtbag about it and now I find it hard to look back on happy memories of it the same way. The 2015 game is thankfully unsullied by those sour elements, however, so I’d say its gotta be my favorite Star Wars game ever. Overwatch - This game came to me at a time when I only wanted to play games that had character creation. I was hesitant to get to know all the characters and lore but I’m overjoyed I did since they’re so rich in personality and fun details. Once I got the hang of characters like McCree, Soldier, Reinhardt, and Widowmaker I was absolutely sold and I still play it two years later. Sonic Mania - The delightful trailer for this game got me all riled up but I wouldn’t know just how great it was until I was playing it myself. I don’t think I could ever truly enjoy my previous favorite 2D Sonic games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD) ever again because this game just feels better than all of them combined.  The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I didn’t really grow up with the Legend of Zelda, only ever playing A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess, but I immediately knew I was going to enjoy this open world take on the series. Just the sheer freedom of what you could do and where you could go was enough to reel me in and its aesthetic still amazes me with how great of a mood it generates. Final Fantasy VII - I still remember going into a GameStop when I was in high school and naively attempting to buy a used copy of this game for the PS1. It was an “epic fail,” as I would’ve said at the time. But over a decade later I downloaded it on the PS4 and went to town, getting my full FF7 experience at long last and loving every minute of it. Very stoked for the remake; it’s probably my most anticipated game right now. Marvel’s Spider-Man - What a surefire hit this was. From the moment the first gameplay footage was out I knew this was going to be the must-have web-swinging, wall-crawling good time. I love that there are so many ways to play the same character and everyone can really embody their own version of Peter Parker. I’m also from New York City so seeing a digital rendition of Manhattan was a real treat (even though they changed uptown a lot and my old apartment doesn’t exist in the game). Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Nine of the other nineteen entries in this list feature a character who’s playable in this latest Smash game. I get that people like Melee for reasons and whatever but how can you not like SSBU, the game that has it all? I’m still riding the high of Banjo and Kazooie entering the fray and I absolutely cannot wait to see where things go from here. Never had more fun playing local multiplayer in my life. Red Dead Redemption II - Never cared for Grand Theft Auto and the first Red Dead Redemption was fun but damn, there’s nothing quite like its sequel. I’m still working my way through the story just because I’ve spent so much time out in the wide open world, taking my time and seeing the sights. I might be a city boy but I have a deep appreciation for the American West and if this game ain’t just the prettiest damn thing I ever did see... hoo-WEE! Top shelf.

So since you're waiting for the season 3 of Elena of avalor, questions if you got any ships? There is a good kind of even Tri split of shipping Elena with Mateo, Gabe and for the LGBT Naomi. Find it weird when people ship Naomi and Esteban or Isa and Gabe. Also about your note about aging them up, while they do look the same as the beginning, they do mention a couple times in the second season that's been a year and Elena is 17. There was never any birthday episode tho. Which also bugs me..
I feel like Mateo/Elena and Gabe/Naomi are the heteronormative ships they’re trying to subtly push. It’s not working, so there’s that. xD
Personally, Gabe/Mateo and Naomi/Elena all the way! But also, after the Sirenas were introduced, Marisa/Elena and Daria/Naomi and me being me I could absolutely make Marzel/Gabe/Mateo work too. Also, on the gay front, absolutely Tornado/Luna. Uhuu.
The straights are highly underrepresented for me though, because like… Francisco/Luisa are so cute and I adore how much Daniel loves Scarlett, but like that’s legitimately it.
Isa and Gabe…? Really?? Yeah no, definitely not. But the Esteban/Naomi I can see where it’s coming from, their banter is absolutely delightful and I think their dynamic is the one with most growth because they did go from enemies to friends, so the jump “to lovers” is really not that far-fetched.
I know they keep bringing up Elena’s current age I think once a season as a reminder but there is never a birthday-episode for her. They had one for Naomi - her 16th - and one for Esteban and even one for Luna, but the titular main character didn’t get to celebrate even one of the three birthdays that must have happened in the past two seasons.
I do like that we can notch down the passing of time based on the Day of the Dead though. Like. That is the one thing that happens every year. Even though season 2 really confused me about that, to be honest, because they celebrated it at the Summer Castle, where they went, to spend the summer, and somehow I was under the impression the Day of the Dead was in autumn. And by “under the impression”, I mean “most definitely know that”…
But urgh, I love this show a lot. It’s great. The characters are amazing, the dynamics are amazing and while vaguely alluded, the at the top mentioned heteronormative ships aren’t actually canon. It’s all about that friendship and that familial love and I adore that.
Also, huge bonus-points for actually inverting tropes!
Naomi’s mom? I was 100% sure that was another case of “this is a cartoon, one parent is enough and it’s 90% of the time the dad and with a dead mom he seems like an even more amazing dad, so let’s kill the mom off” - seriously incredibly tired of that trope. And then she just… comes back? And, the bigger part where they actually inverted big times, she stayed. Because this is another huge trope in animated properties.
Parent(s) who travel a lot due to their job return, the kid thinks they Return For Good, the parent does a speech about how they will now stay together for good, buuut twist: they actually mean to take their kid with them, rip the kid out of the only home they’ve ever known and away from all their friends with absolutely zero regard as to what the kid wants, there’s drama about that until, in the end, with sad expressions, the parents leave alone because they see just how important home is to the kid but also they can’t be bothered to fucking stay with their own damn kid so they leave because work and their own desires are more important than their child.
It’s a very specific trope and yet it keeps happening and I absolutely hate it. I already hate the part where people have kids just to abandon them because their work is sooo much more important than their family and are just not home all the the time, because genuinely just don’t have a kid then if you can’t be bothered to prioritize your kid over your job. But that this in TV always ends with the parents leaving their underaged kid alone once again really vexes me because it’s treated like a grand gesture since they ““allowed”“ their child to stay in the only home the kid’s ever known instead of making decisions over the kid’s head and taking them along.
Here? She? Stays? She sees how important this place is to Naomi, she sees how important Naomi is to this place, to the people who have been there for Naomi while she was off to work. And even though she has this dream-job offer at her own old home, the country she was born in, she chooses her family over that and decides to stay in Avalor with her husband and her daughter. I was so sure she would leave Daniel and Naomi behind in Avalor and go alone. This was such a pleasant change.
Heck, even that they introduced Ash Delgado - because, again, I expected her to just be another killed-off mom for the sake of, I genuinely don’t know, saving animation time and not having to design so many characters and promoting what Amazing Dads those single fathers are. But no. She’s there. She exists. I don’t like her, but damn…
So, that went wildly off-topic there, but I think it still answers the question! Sorry for the rambling, I’m just really enjoying this show, can’t wait for more, hope there will be plenty of the Sirenas and that Joaquín returns for multiple episodes because he is an absolute delight!
