julieta madrigal x fem!reader
tw: topics and scenes of physical abuse
the sounds of wet mud and breaking twigs beneath your feet seemed to be muted by your increased heartbeat. the stinging pain that arose in your ankles only increased, but that didn’t stop you from running how you have been for almost a day. it looked like you just came from war. dirt covered your body along with dried blood and bruises.
“i have to keep going,” you thought to yourself.
you were unfamiliar with your surroundings and extremely tired. the heavy bag you carried only added to the exhaustion. this is the moment you’ve been waiting for. the second you stepped out of that house had felt like a weight was lifted off of your chest. your now ex-husband would miss you, but you sure as hell wouldn’t miss him.
you saw a large structure in the distance between the trees with lights. where there’s lights, there’s people, where there’s people, there’s-
“a town?”
you began to slow down in an attempt to catch your breath. the sun had been almost fully submerged by the darkness and you knew you couldn’t stay the night in the forest again. thankfully, the structure you saw wasn’t too far of a walk.
as you exited the forest, you were welcomed by many bright lights and colorful buildings. the people seemed to be busy with their own thing, some selling food and clothes. the aroma of arepas and various other foods filled your nose. you were so caught up in running you didn’t realize you were hungry.
then you realized all of it. the pain in your ankles, the blood running down from your lip down your neck, the screaming headache and urge to pass out. and that’s exactly what happened. you’d been running for so long nonstop without any source of energy- of course you’d pass out.
———————————————————————
“ay, isa! go check if the arepas are done warming up.”
you’d woken up to a sort of warmth and someone touching you. your eyes could hardly open, but when they did the first thing you saw was a beautiful woman above you. she seemed surprised that you’d woken up but continued what she was doing.
you winced as the warm, damp cloth gently rubbed against your wounds. your bruises ached and you felt sick. the other seemed worried from the wincing and put down the cloth.
“are you okay, hon?”
“where am i?”
noticing you were laid on a bed, you sat up carefully and looked around. the room was painted with little animals and the alphabet, along with what seemed to be different types of fabric laying around. a couple candles were lit on a nightstand by the door to give some light.
“i suppose you deserve an explanation. this town is Encanto. i’m julieta madrigal, and you’re in the madrigal house.”
a confused expression formed on your face.
“are.. you not from here?”
“lo siento, no. i arrived from a couple towns over. i’m y/n y/l/n.”
the older woman appeared to be surprised. she took a guess what was town you were talking about and had no idea why you would leave. she realized it wasn’t exactly her place to know, and then someone else walked into the room.
an obvious younger girl who looked to be in her twenties. she carried a plate with multiple arepas and handed it to julieta.
“thank you isa.”
“no problem, mama.”
the girl examined you with an intrigued expression on her face. she was dressed with a flower dress and her hair was beautifully done. she left the room to let her mother continue what she was doing with a sigh.
“who was that?”
“that’s my daughter, isabela. she’s actually the one who found you lying on the road.”
you suddenly remembered what had happened. you ran away from..him, and ended up here in Encanto. it was such a tiring journey due to all the running and adrenaline from escaping.
your stomach made several noises as you held it in embarrassment. julieta formed a smile and let out a slight chuckle, putting an arepa up to your lips.
“here, eat it.”
you took a bite and a burst of flavor entered you mouth. you quickly finished the arepa as you watched your several wounds heal. what was this? magic? it was something you didn’t know about due to being closed off for so long. you didn’t question it since the relief of feeling better washed over you.
you suddenly took the woman’s hand in yours which caused her eyes to widen a bit, a soft pink blush covered her cheeks.
“gracias. i really appreciate your kindness.”
“ah, it’s nothing. i do this on the daily.”
a deep voice called julieta’s name. it sounded angered and stern, causing her to jump. with her hand still attached to yours she squeezed it gently. it was a habit of hers when nervous.
“i’m sorry- i’ve got a few things to take care of tonight. mama said earlier you’re able to stay the night and we’ll continue with what to do in the morning.”
she got up, brushing off her dress. you took this as an opportunity to examine her better. she had glowing tan-skin and her figure was fairly average. you could tell she was shorter than most and the way she walked was elegant. she made her way to the door and spoke before closing it.
“welcome to encanto.”
the door closed and you were left on the bed with the few arepas still on the plate. you quickly finished them as you let out a sigh laying back down. you were very tired and relieved to finally feel a bed beneath you. you closed your eyes and began to fall asleep.

The hc that their mamás never let them sit next to each other at church because they would keep giggling and not paying attention is still my fave thing in the whole world 😂 You know they were absolute MENACES when they were tiny but Julieta and Pepa couldn’t even complain because they were the same at their age 🤡

Encanto Big Bang 💖
Here's my submission for the @encantobigbang 2022/23! Yayyy!!
I picked my favorite scene from @starlightomicron's fanfiction:
The Madrigal Triplets have finally found each other again and celebrate their first birthday together after their long separation. What traditions have stayed the same and which ones are just in the making?

And, of course, my crack interpretation of another scene:

I don't feel angry, I don't feel anything anymore Of what you already know And look, you know that well, my dear As much as I tried
And saying I love you now is stranger But it's even stranger to see you far away Put our love on a shelf
I had to unlearn how to like you so much And I know you cry, But I have to leave now

La Violencia (Research I did for Encanto fic writers so you don't have to)
TW: Assassination and death
Long but necessary post
@yellowcry @miracles-and-butterflies @evostar (if you already knew about it, that's fine, but reblog so others can too.)
To put it simply;
During this time, an estimated 200,000 people lost their lives, with 112,000 of those deaths occurring between 1948 and 1950. Additionally, two million people were forcibly displaced from their homes, primarily to Venezuela.
The root of this conflict lies in the intense partisan rivalries between Colombia’s two traditional political parties: the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party. These tensions created a divide between liberals and conservatives, eventually leading to the partial collapse of the state and existing institutional structures. As violence escalated, economic motivations began to outweigh political ones, and armed bands took advantage of the chaos to commit robberies, assaults, and revenge against their neighbors.
More in depth;
La Violencia was a ten-year civil war in Colombia from 1948 to 1958, between the Colombian Conservative Party and the Colombian Liberal Party, fought mainly in the countryside.
Liberal hegemony continued through the 1930s and the World War II era, and Alfonso López Pumarejo was reelected in 1942; however, wartime conditions were not favourable to social change. In the elections of 1946, two Liberal candidates, Gabriel Turbay and Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, stood for election and thus split the Liberal vote. A Conservative, Mariano Ospina Pérez, took office.
Conservatives had been embittered by political sidelining and, since 1930, had suffered violent attacks at the hands of Liberal supporters. With the electoral victory of 1946 they instituted a series of crude reprisals against Liberals. It was the initiation of the period that was dubbed La Violencia. On April 9, 1948, Gaitán, leader of the left wing of the Liberal Party, was assassinated in broad daylight in downtown Bogotá. The resulting riot and property damage (estimated at $570 million throughout the country) came to be called the bogotazo.
La Violencia originated in an intense political feud between Liberals and Conservatives and had little to do with class conflict, foreign ideologies, or other matters outside Colombia.  Authoritative sources estimate that more than 200,000 persons lost their lives in the period between 1946 and 1964.
The most spectacular aspect of the violence, however, was the extreme cruelty perpetrated on the victims, which has been a topic of continuing study for Colombians. La Violencia intensified under the regime of Laureano Gómez (1950–53), who attempted to introduce a fascist state. His excesses brought his downfall by military coup—Colombia’s first in the 20th century. Gen. Gustavo Rojas Pinilla assumed the presidency in 1953 and, aided by his daughter, María Eugenia Rojas, began an effort to end La Violencia and to stimulate the economy.
Rojas was a populist leader who supported citizens’ demands for the redress of grievances against the elite. Support for Rojas began to collapse when it appeared that he would not be able to fulfill his promises, when he showed reluctance to give up power, and when the economy faltered as a result of a disastrous fall in coffee prices in 1957. He was driven from office that year by a military junta.
The arrangement for the National Front government—a coalition of Conservatives and Liberals—was made by Alberto Lleras Camargo, representing the Liberals, and Laureano Gómez, leader of the Conservative Party, in the Declaration of Sitges (1957).
The unique agreement provided for alternation of Conservatives and Liberals in the presidency, an equal sharing of ministerial and other government posts, and equal representation on all executive and legislative bodies. The agreement was to remain in force for 16 years—equivalent to four presidential terms, two each for Conservatives and Liberals. The question of what governmental structure would follow the National Front was left unsettled.
It had been contemplated that a Conservative would be the first to occupy the presidency in 1958. When the Conservative Party could not agree on a candidate, however, the National Front selected Lleras, who had previously served in that office for 12 months in 1945–46.
During Lleras’s tenure an agrarian reform law was brought into effect, national economic planning for development began, and Colombia became the showcase of the Alliance for Progress (a U.S. attempt to further economic development in Latin America). But severe economic difficulties caused by low coffee prices, domestic unemployment, and the apparent end of the effectiveness of import substitution were only partially offset by Alliance aid.
The Alliance increased Colombia’s economic dependence on the United States, which, to some Colombians, had serious disadvantages. By 1962 economic growth had come almost to a standstill.
The precarious state of the economy and the degree of social tension were revealed when only about half of those eligible to vote did so in the 1962 presidential elections, which brought Guillermo León Valencia, a Conservative, to the presidency.
During Valencia’s first year in office internal political pressures led to devaluation of the peso (Colombia’s currency), wage increases among unionized workers of some 40 percent, and the most rampant inflation since 1905. Extreme deflationary policies were applied in the next three years, raising the unemployment rates above 10 percent in the major cities and turning even more Colombians against the National Front.
Less than 40 percent of the electorate went to the polls in the 1964 congressional elections.
Marxist guerrilla groups began appearing in Colombia during Valencia’s presidency. The first was the National Liberation Army (Ejército de Liberación Nacional; ELN), which was created by a group of Colombian students who had studied in Cuba.
Founded in 1964, the ELN followed strategies espoused by Che Guevara. Another guerrilla group, which followed two years later, was the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia; FARC), which was more connected to Soviet-influenced communist movements. Much of FARC originated in the “resistance committees” that had appeared in Colombia during La Violencia.
Carlos Lleras Restrepo was the third National Front president (1966–70). He returned the economy to a sound footing, improved government planning for economic development, and pushed through political reforms essential to an orderly end to the Front (which seemed increasingly to constitute a monopoly of power by the Conservative-Liberal oligarchy).
Although the constitutional reform of 1968 stipulated that elections would become competitive again after 1974, the president was still required to give “adequate and equitable” representation to the second largest political party in his cabinet and in the filling of other bureaucratic posts.
Read more here (This article is mostly where I got my info from as well as copilot.ai. I know, AI is bad, but please don't judge me. I was not about to do six hours of research when I have a tool that can help me in seconds.)
What does this have to do with the madrigals?
Well, if you're planning on writing any madrigal (or all) outside of Encanto, La violencia is something you need to take into consideration. It's an important part of Colombia's culture and shouldn't be ignored.
(I just learned about it recently and in turn, need to rewrite some stuff. So I can only imagine that half of the Encanto fandom knows nothing about it)
What cities were safe you ask? I don't think there really was any.
Bogotá: As the capital of Colombia, Bogotá witnessed significant unrest during this period. Political factions clashed, leading to violence and instability.
Cali: Cali, located in the southwestern part of the country, also suffered from La Violencia. It was a hotspot for clashes between Liberal and Conservative supporters.
Medellín: Medellín, another major city, faced its share of violence. The conflict often played out in the streets, affecting civilians and communities.
Barranquilla: This coastal city experienced tensions between rival political groups, resulting in bloodshed and loss of life.
Cartagena: Cartagena, known for its historical significance, was not immune to the violence. The struggle between Liberals and Conservatives left scars on its urban landscape.
Cúcuta: Located near the border with Venezuela, Cúcuta also witnessed violence during La Violencia.
Palmira, Santa Marta, Soledad Atlántico, Armenia, Pereira, Neiva, Valledupar, Bucaramanga, Popayán, Villavicencio, and Soacha were other cities affected by the turmoil.
So, in either city, the madrigals would be exposed to this war if they chose to come out. Now, let's say Encanto is in the very center of Colombia (or at lease close to it) -
Tumblr media
(Right where the red dot is)
The closest area is Villavicencio, Puerto Lypez, and Bogota. All three cities that were affected by the war. And I'm not saying Villavicencio is THAT close to Encanto, probably a week trip at best, but still.
Why did I choose the center of Colombia?
Because I don't see it sitting anywhere else. And it's convenient fic wise. But you can do what you want.
Now I'm not saying the Madrigals won't experience fun in the new world. They most certainly will (culture and technology wise), but the war is really unavoidable for them.
That's all for now, but if you have anything to add or for me to correct, reblog or message me.

I haven't written Encanto fic in a minute, huh? Anyway I banged this out in half an hour to stop me killing my co-workers, enjoy!
Tumblr media
One of the girls was passing it around in the back of church. This silly little folded paper star; you picked a number and a colour and it told your fortune. "You'll marry a rich man," Sofia Quintero whispered, to a chorus of giggles. "Pepa; do you want to try?"
Pepa Madrigal tossed her shiny auburn curls over one shoulder. "No thanks," she said haughtily. "I don't need toys to tell me my future. I can see it whenever I like."
"Pleeeeease Bruno!"
Pepa hung on the end of her brother's ruana as he stomped from room to room. "Please let me see. It's important! I can't let Sofia Quintero and her stupid piece of paper win."
Bruno ignored her.
"I'll do your chores for a week?"
He paused; just for a second, but Pepa noticed. Pepa always noticed. To everyone else, her brother was as hard to read as still water; to her, it was nothing at all.
"Please?" she begged. "Please. Please please please please pleeeeee--"
"Alright, alright!" Bruno stamped his foot, sandal slapping on the tile. "Jeez, Pep; what does it matter anyways?"
Pepa's face darkened. "It. Matters. You're a boy; you don't get it."
"Bruno's shoulders slumped. He didn't think it had anything to do with being a boy. But there was no arguing with Pepa when she got like this. "Ugh. Go get Juli. Might as well make it a party."
And a party it was; Juli smuggled snacks up to Bruno's room after bedtime and Pepa brought some blankets and stuffed animals from her room. They hadn't had a sleepover in Bruno's room in years.
"Ooooooooh!" Juli crowed as, in hues of green, an older version of Pepa was dipped by a handsome, dark-skinned man. "Oooooooooooh, Pepa, he's handsome!"
"I know," Pepa simpered; gracious and faux-humble, like she'd won a prestigious award. "I know."
Bruno wrinkled his nose as the man closed the distance between his lips and Older-Pepa's. "D'we have to watch the kiss?"
"YES!"
"Okay, okay, fine."
"Do me next," said Julieta, leaping onto Bruno's back and shaking his shoulders. "Me next, me next! I want to see my true love, Bruno!" She sighed dramamtically, her eyes going wide and dreamy. "I bet he's strong and graceful and a little bit bad. Not bad-bad, but just...bad enough. You know?"
Bruno had no idea.
Sand fell all around them as the vision ended. "Okay, Bruno sighed, handing the tablet to Pepa without even glancing her way. She squealed happily and kissed her future husband's glass cheek in delight. "Gimme one'a those arepas first. Gotta get my strength back. I'm fourteen, yanno. No spring chicken."
"Thank you Brunito."
"You're welcome, Oven Girl. Glad I'm here for you two to - to exploit."
"Bruno!"
"Don't make us feel bad; that's not fair!"
"S'okay, I'll accept payment in baked goods. Lucky for you."
As much as he complained, Bruno relished the time with his sisters. It was a memory he often looked back on fondly as they grew up, especially as the girls started courting and fell in love. It was nice to see their lives unfolding like that; like the end of the story written just under a folded piece of paper, out of sight for everyone else but them.
So when Dolores came to him - nine years old, shyly tugging on the hem of his ruana - and started talking bout one of her little playmates using some fortune telling game in school that day, he chuckled softly under his breath. "Sure, kiddo," he said, hoisting his sobrina onto his shoulders. "C'mon. Let's go see your husband, huh?"

“Brunito?”
“Hm?”
“I was thinking,” Alma said. “It’s about time we update the mural. We still need to include you and Tonito.”
Goodness, Bruno had completely forgotten about the mural. He’d need to add himself and Antonio; he certainly needed to update Isabela’s appearance. Honestly, with everything that had happened he just hadn’t thought about it. But as soon as she said it, an old idea came back to him.
“About that,” he said. “I was wondering…Could I add Papá too?”
For a terrible moment, he thought Alma was about to cry. Indeed, her eyes watered and her lip trembled…But she took his hand and nodded.
“Sí,” his mamá said softly. “That’s a lovely idea.”

julieta madrigal x fem!reader
tw: topics and scenes of abuse
“juli, can you help y/n watch tonito while me and felix run errands today? we’re planning a party for our anniversary and we need to make sure we have absolutely everything in place. i would have camilo or dolores do it but they seem to have run off somewhere.”
julieta sighed but agreed to do so. it was her day off and she didn’t have any other plans besides relax. she loved antonio, though, so she really didn’t mind.
“of course pepa. where is he?”
“outside in front. i think he’s picking flowers with y/n.”
pepa left to go get felix as julieta sighed. she hadn’t been as tense lately since agustin left on a business trip for his work. this also gave her an opportunity to genuinely apologize to you, and hang out. she somewhat fixed her hair before exiting casita and opened the doors to see antonio running around the yard looking for flowers.
“y/n, y/n! look at these ones!”
antonio brought a bouquet of weeds to you thinking they were flowers. you appreciated the attempt as you chuckled and smiled.
“aw, thank you tonito.”
you turned your head to see julieta smiling. you smiled back slightly. you were still upset from a couple days ago when you confronted her.
“hey, how about you go over there to find some more for tia juli?”
antonio giggled and happily ran over to the area you pointed to. it had actual flowers instead of just weeds. julieta approached you once he left and held her arm as she began to speak.
“hola, y/n. pepa told me to help watch tonito with you.”
you were glad she hadn’t been making it seem awkward and automatically bring up the other day. you did want her to apologize, but you also didn’t want to pressure her to do so. you know how juli is from the time you’ve known her.
she looked at the bundle of weeds in your hand and raised an eyebrow. this made her laugh and your face turned a bit red as she did.
“are those your ‘flowers’?”
“hey- i didn’t pick them. antonio did, cut him some slack.”
you both looked at each other for a couple seconds and laughed together. it was nice being able to laugh with your best friend like this again. julieta’s expression then changed a bit as she struggled to say something. you knew it was going to be her apology.
“y/n, i’m very sorry about the other day, and i’m sorry that i’ve been avoiding you. i just didn’t want to create any further conflict between you and agustin. i don’t want him to attempt anything on you.”
the thought of julieta wanting to protect you gave you a warm feeling in your chest. you were glad she was thinking about you, but isn’t that what she’s always done her whole life? thinking about others? her gift is to heal, after all. when was the last time she thought about herself for once?
“don’t worry about it, juli. thank you for apologizing. again, i’m sorry for being pushy.”
“you weren’t. i know it’s because you care about me, i truly appreciate that, hon.”
blush covered julieta’s face.
“i-i mean thank you, y/n.”
you laughed as you watched her get all flustered. you saw a few flowers nearby and went to go pick them, motioning for julieta to come with you. you inspected them to make sure there were no bugs or hidden thorns on them before picking them, and handing them to the woman.
“here, pretty flowers for an even prettier lady.”
you teasingly winked at her as julieta took the flowers with no hesitation. the blush on her face only deepened as she chuckled. you both stared at each other with warm smiles until you suddenly felt the other’s arms wrap around your upper body. you were shocked for a bit but wrapped your arms gently around her waist.
“tia juli! look, look! i got flowers for you too!”
you both broke the hug even though she didn’t want to, but you didn’t know that. you both looked at antonio as julieta crouched down to reach the younger boy’s height. he handed her the flowers but they were mixed with weeds. a better attempt, you thought.
“thank you, tonito.”
“tia y/n told me to get them for you! i hope i picked out good ones.”
you let out a small gasp hearing antonio call you “tia.” it melted your heart, as it did to juli’s as well.
“well, antonio, tia y/n is teaching you great skills for the future. tell her gracias.”
“gracias, tia y/n!”
the big smile on antonio’s face made you smile more than you were already. he giggled and made his way inside casita since you’ve been out here with him for a while now. julieta stood up straight with more flowers in her hand.
“so, tia y/n, huh?”
“i guess so. just wait until pepa hears about this one.”
you both shared a laugh as you quickly went inside to make sure antonio was behaving. the tension with julieta was gone which you were both very happy about.
—————————————————————
“and so i told pepa, felix wasn’t actually outside, and i had never seen her hair stick up so fast!… y/n?”
with antonio in your lap surrounded by your arms, you both were in a deep sleep. pepa and felix hadn’t been back since the morning. it was almost time for dinner. you and julieta didn’t mind, though, as you both loved little tonito dearly.
your hair was a bit of a mess and your eye-bags were visible. you would think you looked unflattering, but the older woman found that you looked cute. she caressed some stray strands of hair out of your face behind your ear. examining your features, she traced your lips very softly so as to not wake you up.
suddenly she took her hand back.
“ay.. what am i thinking”
julieta’s been having this feeling around you since the second day you came to encanto. it grew after the night with agustin, but why? she considered you her best friend. she didn’t want to ruin the friendship between you two.
hanging out was something she loved. if she could, she’d be around you all the time. isn’t that how best friends are anyway? the flirting moments you would both have with each other were her favorite. that had to be a best friend thing. right?
julieta buried the bottom half of her face in her arms as they rested on her knees. she was careful to not move too much as the bed was a bit small, she didn’t want to wake you up. just then, she heard foot steps.
“antonio? are you in here?”
the nursery door opened carefully, pepa poking her head in. she fully stepped into the room once she saw you and antonio sleeping, along with julieta next to you. this made her form a smile.
“aww, what cuties. i assume he behaved?”
“si, of course pepa. tonito’s a good kid.”
pepa walked over as she gently removed your arms from her child and picked him up. your head then fell on julieta’s shoulder which caused her cheeks to flush.
“dinner’s almost ready, sis. you should wake y/n up soon. unless you’d prefer her over the dinner we made.”
pepa winked at the older woman as she scoffed.
“ah- pepa! get out of here.”
julieta covered her mouth after speaking. she didn’t mean to yell. her sister laughed quietly and left the room. she looked over at you to see you were still asleep. it wouldn’t hurt to stay like this for a few more minutes.
she rested her head on yours and closed her eyes. jeez, she realized how tired she was as she felt like passing out. you both were asleep together until julieta’s eldest came into the room. isabela saw you both together and her stomach began to hurt.
it wasn’t a bad hurt, though. she was actually happy to see her mother look relaxed for once. agustin wasn’t here to interrupt you two or do anything to julieta. you wouldn’t say it out loud, but you too were happy that man wasn’t here. spending time with the older woman created a safe feeling for you. oh if only you knew that it was the same for juli.
isabela smiled and gently shook her mother’s shoulder.
“mami, dinner’s ready.”
julieta woke up with a jump. she saw isabela and sighed. isa mouthed a “sorry” and looked over at you. you were, surprisingly, still asleep. damn you were a deep sleeper. isabela left the room to wait in the hallway. julieta looked over at you and hesitated. she quickly kissed your forehead hoping you wouldn’t wake up.
the woman carefully climbed out of bed and brushed off her dress as usual. she walked out of the room into the hall with her daughter.
“so, what’s up with y/n?”
julieta’s face flushed once again. she made a “shh” sound and crossed her arms as she looked away. her daughter couldn’t possibly think anything of you two.
“nothing, isa. i’m just glad to have a close friend to spend time with. she’s done so much for me as i have for her.”
“uh huh.”
“i’m serious! nothing’s going on, don’t be stupid.”
the mother and her daughter continued walking but stopped the conversation right before getting to the kitchen table. the empty chair next to her would be where you sat, and she wished you were there next to her. but, again, she didn’t want to wake you.
she told everyone what little tonito had called you, which made pepa and felix’s heart melt. alma let out a laugh and everyone else almost had the same reaction. you were growing onto everyone for the time you spent with the madrigals. some even considered you to already be part of the family.

How many times do we think this girl got herself tangled up in her own vines when she was first learning how to use her gift and she was constantly getting untangled by her parents? Tiny Isabela was so CUTE

Buckles and bends
"It... It didn't work" Julieta pushed another plate. "Mi Amor, try again... Maybe... Maybe something wrong happened?"
@miracles-and-butterflies what are we doing?
A heavy silence hung in the room. Luisa didn't have to look up to know that her parents were staring at her right now. No one knew what to say. Julieta's food could heal anything, from scratches to broken bones.
It did nothing with the stone. Of course, it wasn't a mere injury. It was something different. Humans weren't supposed to be turning into stone. Isabela was right, Luisa was a thing now. Normally, the younger of the two would shout at Isabela, not willing to take such disrespect. But how could she be mad if she felt that way too? How could Luisa even call herself human?
Agústin froze in shock. "It... It didn't work." For the first time on his memory Julieta failed to heal somebody.
Luisa shook her head slightly, her neck creaking from the movement. The magic food changed nothing. The stone corrupted her body, pushing the blood, the life somewhere else. Replacing her entire existence.
Julieta pushed another plate. "Mi Amor, try again... Maybe... Maybe something wrong happened?" She didn't sound like she believed her own words.
Even eating now was torture, Luisa's hands were firmly stuck, immobile, and heavy. Luisa was used to carry heavy things, but this? It wasn't just heavy, it was hefty.
As expected, it didn't help in the second time either. Luisa spitted out the food, that didn't even taste good. Luisa could go and swallow a bucket of sand and it wouldn't taste any different.
Luisa sobbed in despair. The realization had crept into her mind. She would stay like this, a terrifying monster made out of stone. She wanted nothing more than to hug herself and hide somewhere. But her arms couldn't bend. There were no flesh, no bones or joints in them. Everything was replaced with solid greys.
It wasn't fair. Luisa hadn't done anything, right? She is supposed to be normal, a living, moving, and breathing being. Not a lifeless gargoyle.
Agústin tried to put a calming hand on Luisa's spine, but she flinched away immediately, not wanting this to spread on him. Her body fell on the floor and she could only lie here and cry her eyes out. She had no idea of how she would get up without her hands.
"Luisa, I promise, there... there's a way to fix this," Agustin begged, sitting next to her.
For a second, her eyes shifted to him, before another loud sob escaped her lips. She wanted to believe it, she wished that there was a way to fix this, that she wouldn't have to live in this grotesque form from now on.
Luisa wanted to believe that she could still be human. But the odds didn't make her too convinced in this. Julieta's food didn't help at all. It couldn't even relieve the agonizing pain Luisa felt at the moment. She felt her body getting ripped apart every second, twitching until there was nothing left of her human self. She could just grow devil horns and wings at this point, so everyone would immediately see what she became.
She choked on her own tears, feeling them running down her withered cheeks. Pain was spreading all over her body, pushing soft skin on the floor, solidifying her within this weighted body.
"Luisa, control yourself," Abuela demanded, seeing her granddaughter breaking into another mess of illegible crying that Luisa just couldn't control. She did want to act like this, she was supposed to be strong, to handle everything without falling apart. But now it was too much. An uncertain future that loomed over her didn't give her any strength to withstand this painful fate that seemed to be unavoidable right now.
"She has all right to be upset." Agústin stood up, staring down at Alma. The room became tense, Luisa's despair was dripping around. A hard realization was evident in everyone. Magic couldn't fix this. And now, there was no evidence that anything could fix Luisa.
Julieta, who had already thrown the fragments into the trashcan stood next to her husband, defending her daughter as well.
Luisa kept lying on the floor, sobbing, unable to get up and stand proud. Not like this. How could she even stand if her upper limbs were completely frozen now? Her spine could still move, but it made awful creaks every time Luisa did so. A sound of stones rubbing against each other. She wanted to scream for help, beg somebody to help her get up, but the words got stuck in her throat.
"Is this thing going to stay like this?" Luisa's gaze shifted to her older sister as much as it could in her current position. Isabela swallowed and stepped back, away from Luisa, staring at her like at a plagued patient.
She hadn't called Luisa by her name since she saw her stone body. Not even once when she was arguing with their dad. Luisa couldn't blame her. She wouldn't call herself by a name either. You don't name an inanimate object. Right now she was turning into a terrible monster straight from hell without any way back. The reality sank in and Luisa couldn't find any way to avoid the coldness invading her body.
Casita gently pushed one of its tiles up, helping Luisa to sit. The woman sobbed thankfully, now at least doing something other than lying limply. Agustin patted Luisa's spine, trying to bring some comfort. The touch of his hand wasn't any different from the floor where Luisa lay a moment ago. Luisa just shook her head, using her bare strength to get on her feet. There was no chance Dad could lift the weight of her petrified body. And Luisa didn't want to risk and infect him with whatever it was.
"Lu, it's okay."
She didn't have the strength to argue with this obvious lie.
Julieta stood next to her too. "How about you eat something again? Even if it won't help, you barely ate anything."
"I'm not hungry." Luisa's eyes widened slightly, she winced from her voice.  Low and creaky, pushes way down her vocal range. Another sign of her transformation into this gargoyle monster. "No appetite," She added, wrinkling from her own voice. She couldn't force herself to take a bite. Not when everything she tasted felt like chewing dirt.
She wanted to wake up. Her only wish was to open her eyes, stare at the ceiling, scream from terror, and then feel relief. She wanted to get away from this nightmare. But no matter how hard she was trying, she didn't wake up. There was no way of waking up now. She couldn't run away in any sense of this word.

5: Julieta is Tired
Meanwhile...as the encanto grows, so does the demand for Julieta’s cooking. Julieta wishes they wouldn’t assume she can feed everyone, at every occasion. She’s so tired.

Encantober 21: Change
Art from @junosaccount! Thanks for collaborating!
“Hold still!” Pepa slaps Julieta’s shoulder, fortunately not with the hand holding a needle.
Out of the triplets, Julieta isn’t the one to be squeamish about blood and pain, yet here she is. 20 years old and piercing her ears in solidarity with her sister and brother.
Happy birthday to me. Then again, after enough liquor, everything sounds like a good idea.
“You gotta…hold still, Juli, you keep squirming away.” Pepa gestures at Bruno, who’s tentatively patting his earring. He leaves off and comes over to grab Julieta’s shoulders.
“Is that still clean?” she tries.
Pepa looks at her, then the needle. “I already disinfected your skin and stuck the needle in the candle flame.”
“Maybe you can disinfect the needle, too?”
“You’re stalling.” Still, Pepa follows her suggestion. “This is silly, your magic would heal any problems.”
She winces, despite the truth. “But it’s going to hurt!”
Pepa waves it away. “A few seconds of pain for a lifetime of earrings!” She puts the stopper in place behind Julieta’s ear. “Now hold still—”
Julieta faints, slumping in Bruno’s grasp.
When she comes to, her ears sting. “Ow—” food is shoved in her mouth and she automatically chews. The pain vanishes. “What happened?”
Pepa and Bruno sit on the floor next to her. Bruno looks suspiciously like he’s holding back laughter.
“You,” Pepa starts, “our gifted healer, who deals with injuries and blood every day, fainted before I even pierced your ears.”
Grimacing, Julieta raises a hand to her ears, feeling small hoops that weren’t there before. “You did it while I was out?” She turns a betrayed look on the two.
Bruno shrugs. “You held still like that and didn’t have to deal with the pain. See? It’s all over now.”
It’s true, her magic took away the pain before it could really sink in. She looks at her two siblings; Pepa’s got matching hoops and Bruno has a single one. “What’s Mamá going to say?”
Pepa passes her a bottle of liquor. “Who cares what she says! It’s our birthday! Let loose a little.”
Julieta never lets loose. As Bruno falls out of favor with Mamá, Julieta is being slid into his place and expected to be the responsible one. She touches her earrings one more time. “You're right! We’re young. Now give me that bottle.”
All three of them adjust their hairstyle the next day to show off the new additions. Pepa pulls her hair back in a braid and Julieta piles hers into a bun. Bruno’s hair is long enough to pull back into a ponytail, curls brushing the back of his neck. His earring flashes in the light, matching his sly grin.
“Just wait till Mamá sees,” he hisses at Pepa.
She elbows him and sticks her nose in the air. “Just go to breakfast, Brunito.”
Julieta follows them, sliding quietly into her chair at the table.
Mamá glances up, then back at her plate, then up again. “Hmm,” she says.
Bruno and Julieta share a look.
“Pepa, you have earrings.”
She nods, glaring at the small cloud that pops in over her head.
Mamá’s gaze slides down the table. “Julieta, you have earrings as well.”
“Yes, Mamá.” She rubs her spoon, uncomfortable with the attention.
“Care to explain?”
Pepa kicks her under the table, which Julieta takes as say something. “We decided to pierce our ears for our birthday. I made sure everything was clean, though, and my food of course healed them right away.
“Julieta fainted!” Bruno could never keep his mouth shut when he should. He grunts, likely because Pepa stomped on his foot.
Mamá’s frown is growing deeper adding wrinkles across her face. She turns her attention to Bruno. “And you didn’t stop—wait.” Squinting, she leans forward. “Are you wearing an earring…too?”
“Well…we were drinking and…” Bruno’s glee is rapidly draining.
“All three of you pierced your ears, on your own, under the influence of liquor?” Mamá stands, hands planted firmly on the table.
Bruno sinks into his seat and Julieta starts planning escape routes. “Ah—” he throws one more frantic look at his siblings. “Pepa made me do it?”
“Bruno!”
Pepa’s thunder accentuates the yell. Bruno bolts with Pepa in pursuit. Mamá watches them go and sighs, shaking her head. “Julieta, I expected better of you.”
“Yes, Mamá,” she whispers, ducking her head. She hates disappointing her. Still, the slight weight and sway of her new earrings lights a warm glow in her chest. It’s a small change, but still—it’s rebellion enough for her.
