kanej fic recs & moodboards in honor of @alltheworldsinmyhead’s birthday! oh my!

It just so happens that one of my absolute favorite people, Nat (@alltheworldsinmyhead), is celebrating a BIRTHDAY today (June 27th)! You might know her from her recent kanej au l’appel du vide, or any number of her other incredible fics on ao3.

It also happens that she’s one of the best writers I know (not biased - well, okay, a little bit; but I promise I loved her fics before I loved her!), so in honor of her birthday today, I wanted to recommend just three of her fics that are absolutely gorgeous and should basically be required reading for the fandom. ;)

Okay, here are three incredible fic options for you, depending on your mood (although you should really read all of Nat’s fics, but here’s a good place to start):

1. If you want a moving, romantic depiction of cottagecore Kanej in Lij...

and it's all to come (for now we're still young) - oneshot, canon-compliant, 12k words, rating: M

Lia’s Summary: Kaz takes Inej to the Rietveld farm for the first winter after their marriage. They begin to learn what it is not just to survive together, but to live together, tenderly and quietly and peacefully. I remember reading this fic when it was first published and thinking that it was such a beautiful, heartwarming depiction of post-canon, cottagecore-esque kanej.

Nat’s Summary: Kaz and Inej in Lij, together on a threshold on winter and something far greater.

Excerpt:

She remembers the Slat on so many rainy afternoons, both of them sitting in front of each other on the floor, Kaz’s fingers caressing the inside of her forearm. From the wrist to the bend of the elbow and back again, tracing the web of her veins. From leather on cotton to leather on skin, and, finally skin on skin. The rasp of his voice keeping her anchored until her stomach stopped doing somersaults with revulsion and dropped heavy with delight. No other man sounds like Kaz, not after Queen’s Lady played on his vocal cords with her stiff fingers. And Inej hates to admit that, even to herself, but she is silently thankful for it. The low rumble of her husband’s voice is a summer storm, and street fights, and a True Sea before a hurricane, but is as far from any lingering stains of the Menagerie as possible.

It’s dangerous and safe, and hers.

2. If you want a heartbreaking exploration of how fate would treat Kaz & Inej if they’d met as children...

the world goes on (on its wicked way) - oneshot, au, 7k words, rating: G

Lia’s Summary: Inej’s Suli caravan visits Lij when Kaz is just eleven, and fate takes over from there. Their storybook romance is replete with magic tricks and love letters and endless summer days - until, of course, their hourglass runs out. This is the fic that made me so feral that I had to start blogging about it, and then Nat and I started messaging for the first time, and the rest is history. (So I guess there’s at least one happy ending in this story).

Nat’s Summary: Kaz and Inej are dealt a kinder hand. It is not necessarily better, in the end.

Excerpt:

So they ran around the farm, swam in the river, made daisy chains by the edge of the forest. Inej ate hutspot with his family and he ate flatbreads with hers. Her Kerch got better and better every day, but it did not lose its lovely softness, and Kaz loved when she said his name, the sharp “z” transformed in her mouth into a swish.

It was a fairytale, truly, and the one thing all fairytales have in common is the fact that they have to end.

3. If you want a dark, deep, masterful story that encompasses all the best of romance and heartbreak and every human emotion in between...

l’appel du vide - multichapter, au, 41k words, rating: M

Lia’s Summary: What appears on its surface to be a ‘marriage of convenience’ kanej au has untold depths: Kaz has lost his purpose, Inej has lost her faith. These two are older and more broken than their canon counterparts, but they need each other just as much - or maybe more. Full disclosure that I had the immense honor of betaing this fic for Nat, but I think that just means I’m well-positioned to tell you what a masterpiece it is: I’ve read every word three times over, and it only gets better with every read.

Nat’s Summary: Kaz comes to the Menagerie for Inej many years too late and bites off more than he can chew.

Excerpt:

And Kaz wants, wants, wants just like any other man would. It is a perfect performance, an act Inej must’ve repeated so many times it probably feels like muscle memory for her – and he still wants her anyway. He wants to drop on his knees in front of her and bury his face between her legs. He wants to hear her gasp and moan, and he wants to believe it is all real. He wants her awake and alive in his hands, without any smoke or mirrors.

“You lied to me, in the Menagerie,” she says slowly. “You said this is not what you want.”

“It isn’t,” he rasps, the lie bitter on his tongue.

When she passes him on her way back to the bedroom, he catches a wisp of her perfume – jasmine, incense, amber. Sweet like a poisonous flower.

“The fact that you can’t do something, Kaz,” she says with her back turned to him, “does not mean that you don’t want to.”

Some TUA Fic Recs!

These are some of my absolute favourite “Umbrella Academy” fanfics! All of these fics are finished, except for one. Please note that most of the tags I am including are not all of the tags on the fic, they are mostly the general ones and warning ones. Also, all of the word counts have been rounded. (all fics are on ao3)

“Charming. Isn’t my company entertaining enough for you?” Dramatically, Klaus threw up a hand against his forehead and collapsed onto his bed as if he were wounded.

“Don’t be an ass,” His brother rolled his eyes but there was a fond expression on his face, “You know that some of us aren’t actually nocturnal?”

Klaus stuck his tongue out, “What are you doing up then?”

Instantly, his brother’s defences snapped back up and he scowled, “I t-t-t-tol-tol-told y-y-you th-“

Whatever his excuses were, Klaus couldn’t be bothered to hear them. As lowly as the others thought of him, he was actually pretty intuitive and it was obvious the real reason Diego was out of bed was because something was bothering him. He wasn’t one to just wander around after hours for no reason- that was more Klaus’s gig. Whatever it was had really gotten under his skin. Unfortunately, his brother was too emotionally constipated to say what was on his mind.

But Klaus couldn't calm down, because the closet was too small and dark and reminded him of the mausoleum and he would be locked in there, alone with ghosts and...

Klaus writhed violently, shouting as loud as he could with the tape in his mouth, looking at Blue and Pink in panic and fear. [...] Klaus shouted once again, choking on his breath and the tears that threatened to suffocate him, a chorus of no, no, no, no in his mind.

In the show, after Klaus reveals the little information he knew to Hazel and Cha-Cha, we have a time jump and in the next scene, he's locked in a small closet in the motel room.

But what happened after he revealed the information? How did he end up in the closet? How did he handle the long hours locked up until Hazel and Cha-Cha came back late at night? How did he handle the guilt of telling about Five? How did he handle flashbacks and panic attacks?

He drops himself over the edge, and lets himself fall on his ass onto the cement, hoping there isn’t something he wouldn’t voluntarily sit in waiting for him. There isn’t, he finds, and he climbs to his feet as Ben appears next to him, all collected and unbothered and otherwise immaculate.

“Come come!” Klaus tells him, and starts down the alley, away from the dumpster, staggering a few steps until he regains his footing. “Diego will love this, we’ll have a bunch of fun, and he’ll thank me for the relaxing break from work.”

“He isn’t— he won’t,” Ben calls after him, but Klaus feels him follow him out of the alley and back to the McDonald’s anyways.

Or: 21 year old Klaus and Diego (and Ben) chilling in a car, and then a McDonald's.

It makes him sad, sometimes, that in order to find acceptance, Klaus has to travel back fifty years into one of the bloodiest wars of American history. Most of the time, he doesn't care. His family probably doesn't even notice he's missing anyway.

Buddie Fic Recs

AKA Talented Mutuals Tuesday

Except I spent so long making this list that the timezones changed over BUT I wanted to show my mutuals some love and now that we are going into the hiatus I thought you might all like a list of quality fics to keep you occupied while there is no new Weewoo show.

I don't know if anyone will actually want to join in on this but if you do the rules are simple:

Buck challenges Eddie to try to hit on him after teasing Eddie for not having any ‘game’. This fic is very funny and very soft.

believe in one thing (i won't go away)

This fic hit me straight in the feels. Buck and Eddie go to couples therapy even though they aren't a couple and they work through some stuff.

Eddie comes out to Aunt Pepa after his ‘date’ with Vanessa. I am a little bit biased towards this one because she did write it for me but it's honestly just so good!

How to Cure Boredom: Buckley Edition

The 118 are stuck at the firehouse during a slow shift and Buck entertains them all by mattress-surfing the loft stairs. It’s soft and silly and in the same universe as her other fic Safe in His Arms.

I will scream from the rafters how much I adore this fic and yes it did make me cry (happy tears). It’s a look into Buck’s head after his sperm donor kid is born and he realizes what Christopher (and Eddie) truly mean to him. I know I have recced this before but it deserves all the love.

Unless You Ask Me To

Eddie dates a man for the first time, and Buck is completely 'Fine'. This is a preemptive rec because it is one chapter away from completion and I have been saving it to binge in one sitting but knowing Jenwyn and her incredible talent I guarantee this will be worth the read.

This is Spotty’s newest fic and it's just brilliant. Buck is practicing extreme self-control whilst Eddie is being an irresistible menace.

Buck finally tells Eddie he loves him right before Eddie’s new boyfriend is supposed to meet Christopher. Honestly, all I can say about this fic is that it’s a masterpiece and I screamed many times while reading it.

Is it really a Meegs rec list if I don’t rec this fic honestly it's engraved on my soul. This is a criminal minds/greys inspired fic where Buck is kidnapped and tortured until the 118 can find him. This fic is so so well written and means a million things to me I could never explain but pleaseeeee read it!!

If you're reading someone's fic, and you really like it, please comment. All us writers put hours and hours into everything we publish, while something may take you only minutes to read.

Kudos are awesome, yeah, but comments are just... everything. As an author, I can tell that you really, really loved it. Every positive comment is locked in my mind and rotating constantly- I screenshot so many of them, save them to a special folder on my PC.

That is to say, please give writers in the community some love, there are some AMAZING authors out there. I'm thinking of doing fic recs at some point, but even then there'll be some amazing people that would be missed, so spread the joy etc.

David’s hand found theirs, and he plucked it from where they’d had it against his chest, twined their fingers together, and presented them both to his father. A length of leather cord was slowly wrapped and knotted around their joined hands as Gabe spoke: “Now you are bound one to the other, with a tie not easy to break. Take this time of binding, as the final vow is made to learn what you need to know – to grow in wisdom and love. That your union will be strong, and that your love will last, in this life and beyond.”

I love this story. it's a long fic, and complete, and I love the unique take on angel as a shifter, and the dynamics of rivals to lovers. <3
