fateful favors [kinktober 2023: love bites]
See the full Kinktober 2023 Collection here! See my full list of works here!
Summary: What started as a plan to join your sister at a tenant party in your new apartment building takes a trajectory you didn't expect when you discover she's arranged for someone to keep you company tonight
Pairing: Robert Laing x Reader
Warnings: 18+ | smut (minors & pearl clutchers, you know the drill and i am not the one); public sex; unprotected p in v; vaginal fingering; language; Wilder (yes he's a warning as he should be); mentions of alcohol consumption; slightest lil angst towards the end [let me know if i missed anything!]
Things to be aware of: Reader is Charlotte's sister
Tumblr media
"Charlotte I cannot believe you," you groaned as you paced your sister's swanky high-rise apartment, the clacking from her stilettos on your feet echoing with every step. "I thought the point of asking me to go with you to this forsaken party was so that you didn't have to ward off that creeper five floors below you and now you're telling me that you commissioned one of your former flings in this building to what? Babysit me?"
"Please, you should know me to be better than that, Y/N. I'm just trying to make sure that you'll be safe. Wilder has a more…ruthless tendency especially with new faces in these notorious parties with the rest of the tenants." She walked up behind you and helped zip up the rest of your dress, the top half now secure. "And he is not a former fling, he's a friend. Believe it or not, I do happen to have a few now."
"Right, sure." You scoffed at her description. "A friend you definitely shagged or else you wouldn't have described him as the biggest in the high rise." You waved your hands in her direction as if to say 'tell me I'm wrong' when your words put a bashful expression on her face. "Now this poor guy gets hired to be a glorified bodyguard against horny bastards when the point was that we stick together so that--ohh fucking Christ, that's it isn't it? You got him to babysit me because you're planning on hooking up with someone at this party!"
"I wouldn't use the term 'hired'," a new voice spoke from the doorway. "That would imply that payment will be involved."
When your eyes landed on the source of the new voice your jaw hit the floor.
The man wore a well-fitting suit that accentuated a clearly lean and muscular physique, the upper half of his white button-up shirt practically fighting for its life as it stretched across his chest. His trousers clinging just the right amount to sculpted thighs and highlighted exactly what your sister meant by the biggest in the high-rise.
He walked towards you with strides that you could imagine a wolf would take as it stalked its prey. With eyes dead set on its target with full intent to devour once the distance was crossed.
"And with someone as striking as yourself, I would hardly call it a hardship to keep you company tonight.” He brought your hand up to his lips and pressed a delicate kiss to your knuckles. "Doctor Robert Laing. I live two floors below."
Pick your jaw up off the floor, you hissed at yourself. "I'm uhm…Y/N. Just Y/N," you stammered, trying your damnedest to fight back the thrill that shot up your arm and made a bee line for between your legs at the feel of his lips on your skin. He's probably the most pro of the pros when it comes to getting knickers wet, Y/N, do not fucking fall for it.
He repeated your name slowly, as if he was rolling around each syllable on his tongue, all the while he still held your hand in his absurdly larger one. "Lovely to make your acquaintance. Shall we all head upstairs, then?" You could only manage to nod under his intense oceanic gaze, absolutely dumbfounded as he laced his fingers between yours and led you to the elevators.
You threw your sister a quick look in passing, mouthing 'Oh my God! To which she only gave you a knowing look as she nodded, mouthing back something that seemed like 'Have fun'.
Tumblr media
When Charlotte invited you to a tenant party at the 29th floor, this was most definitely not what you were expecting. The party had extended well beyond the constraints of the host's apartment and bled into the hallway leading to its front door, the entire floor already beginning to give off the faint smell of liquor and sex. Some of the guests had paired off and were in various states of undress, pawing at each other and well on their way to becoming fully disrobed right there in the corridor.
The inside was much more scandalous, sounds of grunting and obscene moans coming from the bedroom inside, door wide open as if they were inviting the other guests to stand and watch. Or join in.
You and Laing found a spot to sit in that kept a bit of distance from the fornication, him genuinely seeming interested in your work and the events that led you to the high-rise in the first place. About how long you'd be staying in the city and if you'd already gotten to know the lay of the land where the building's amenities were concerned, offering to show you around in the weekend if you were still here.
Much as you wanted to buy into the notion that someone that was so obviously out of your league was interested in getting to know you, you couldn't help the thought that perhaps he was just investing this much effort into this to try and rekindle something with your sister. The thought wasn't completely unfounded, considering Charlotte's history with having former flings going absolutely astonishing lengths to get into contact with her again to this day for her to direct her attentions their way again. And Robert Laing might be someone that the women in the party looked to and regarded as if he was some sort of sex god with the outright lust on their faces whenever they snuck a glance his way, but he was still a man, after all.
And with the way she was describing him to you earlier, she'd definitely entertained the thought of a repeat performance with him at least thrice. Probably still had the notion on the back burner of her mind even as she chatted it up with another attendee, yet another shockingly tall head turner in a black suit that looked tailored within an inch of its life and slicked back onyx curls with a look on his face that did more than enough to tell you she wouldn't be sleeping alone tonight.
The feel of Laing's hand on yours snapped you out of your thoughts, fingers deftly taking away the empty cup that you'd been picking at with your nails for the last few minutes. "I'll just go get us some fresh drinks. I won't be two minutes." You gave him a nod with a well-practiced smile, his words ringing a little too familiar and conjuring memories of gatherings much like this one sans the public displays of lasciviousness that you'd once attended with Charlotte where the sorry chap that had to accompany you would say nearly those exact words and that would be the last you'd hear from them.
It was a song and dance you were all too familiar with. And after repeat offenses you'd grown numb to it, expecting it, even.
What you weren't expecting was the sharp look that Laing had thrown somewhere behind your shoulder before leaning in and pressing a kiss to your cheek. "Save my seat, darling."
All you could say in response was a stupefied, "Sure."
Not even half a minute after he stepped away someone approached you, positioning himself behind where you were seated on the sofa, denim-clad thigh dangerously close to your shoulder. "Never seen your pretty face at one of these events. Are you new to the building, luv?"
You looked at the man that approached you, the stench of nicotine, alcohol, and lust coming off him in waves. He looked like one of those 'adult film' stars that you'd often find in the tapes that various exes had had hidden away. The man they dreamed of becoming so that they could rut into women that looked like your sister with reckless abandon and get paid for doing a shit job.
"I am." You kept your answer terse. Clipped. You'd dealt with men like this before, and for the most part all they wanted was for you to steer them Charlotte's way. Once they realized how guarded you were they'd leave you well enough alone.
"Smashing," he slurred, shifting his stance until he rested his elbows on the back of the couch, a little more eye level with you and now you could see the dangerous predatory gleam in his eyes. You recognized this look, too. Someone who took rejection one too many times and now he would just let the words roll off his back and take what he wanted anyway.
Someone you should run away from as fast as you humanly could in these god awful heels that Charlotte practically shoved you into. Or maybe if desperate times really do call for desperate measures I could drive the heel through his neck, you pondered quietly.
And despite knowing that he wasn't coming back, you found yourself hoping that Laing would pop up and offer some form of backup in case your hunch about this leering imposing guest was correct.
"The name's Richard Wilder," he said incoherently, a thick meaty hand sneakily trying to move across your shoulder to play with the strap holding your dress up and keeping you relatively decent compared to majority of the party. "Perhaps we can go find a corner somewhere and…get to know each other a little better."
You could feel your stomach recoil in disgust at the implication, partnered with the way a finger had worked its way under your dress strap and he was already leaning in closer and closer, the stench of the cigarettes and alcohol invading your space and searing the path from your nostrils to your brain. "I'm already here with someone," you managed to choke out as you struggled not to take a breath. The lie felt heavy on your tongue, but you wielded it regardless like a makeshift weapon that could maybe ward him off if you said it convincingly enough. "He should be back any second."
Wilder let out a scoffing laugh, his breath on a mission to sever your sense of smell within the next sixty seconds. "Who? Laing? Sweet thing you really are new here. That man's fucked his way through this building and back. You'll be lucky if he remembers your name come Saturday." He shifted even closer to you, pressing his nose into your hair and inhaling like a drug sniffing canine on a mission. "I reckon he's shriveled up down there from getting it wet all the fucking time--"
"Well I always say better shriveled than dry," you shot back, your mouth somehow having lost its filter as the alcohol kicked in and melted away your inhibitions. "You're so obviously bitter over that fact I can taste your jealousy when you exhale. Now please, get gone and find someone else to torment. Or better yet, you could go home and get ahead of that absolute banger of a hangover you'll have in the morning and start sleeping it off."
"Hmmm…bed. Now that is an excellent idea." He moved his hand down your arm until his fingers hooked around your elbow, trying to pull you up to your feet. "Come on, luv. I can make you feel so good you won't ever let me leave your bed even when my wife's knocking down your door with a fuckin' butcher's knife."
"Fucking hell, you're married? You're married and you're still looking for someone to warm your miserable dry cock?" The disgust was already causing your stomach to coil up, the urge to just take off one of your borrowed heels and jam it into the arm that was holding you in place becoming more and more tempting with each passing second. You scanned the room to see if you could discern which of the other guests was the unlucky bastard's wife, finding a heavily pregnant woman seated near the singular exit out into the hall with sad eyes and a scowl on her face as she eyed the man with a sloppy grip on you. "You're vile, Wilder. Go home to your wife and actually try to be a decent human if being a decent husband is too tall of an order for your miserable arse."
He looked as if you'd slapped him clean across the face. "You mouthy little slut where do you get off speaking to me like this?" He pulled on you harder, knocking you off balance and having you struggle to keep from him pulling you over and across the couch. "Don't fight it, little slut. I'll take you somewhere you can put that glib little mouth of yours to good use. Maybe if you're a good girl I'll even let you cum tonight--"
"Wilder get your paws off my date. Now." You could feel the coiling tension in your stomach begin to relax at the sound of Laing's voice over the speakers, an arm wrapping around your waist delicately while the other clamped around Wilder's wrist in a vice grip. "While I still have the inclination to ask nicely."
The burly man released you from his hold, raising his hands in the air with a smug smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "You probably weren't even worth the effort anyway," were his last words before he walked away, setting his sights on another woman and approaching her, a similar look of apprehensive disgust on the woman's face as he no doubt singed her nose hairs with his smell of sweat and cigarettes as he had done you just minutes ago.
"Come on, darling," Laing whispered, pressing a soft kiss to your temple, slowly leading you toward the balcony, the fresh air making you gasp desperately for your next breaths as if you were trying to clear the outright disgust from your encounter out of your lungs. He kept his hold loose on you as you relaxed against the wall, his forehead pressed lightly against yours while he guided you through deep breaths, his woodsy citrusy scent helping to calm you even more. "I shouldn't have left you alone with him on the prowl. I'm so sorry, Y/N."
"Hey don't be so hard on yourself I'm honestly surprised you came back in the first place," you answered back, still slightly feeling the effects of the alcohol on you. "It's alright, really--"
Before you could tell him he could be done with his favor to Charlotte and you'd just go home and sleep off your adrenaline from your unfortunate run in, he leaned in and pressed his lips to yours in a tender kiss. The thrill you felt earlier tonight from him kissing your hand had nothing on how his mouth on yours ignited a flame that quicly spread through your whole body, making your knees buckle as he pressed harder against you, his fingers weaving into your hair as his other arm wrapped around you while he worked his thigh between your legs.
"People like him don't particularly like hearing the word 'no'."
His words were fraught with meaning, like he was giving you a warning of what could befall you if you ever found yourself alone with him again. The mere thought of what could have happened if Laing didn't come around when he did and Wilder succeeded in dragging you off somewhere had you going frigid where you stood.
"Don't trouble yourself, sweet girl." He pressed a soft kiss to your cheek, kissing a trail to your neck. "You'll find soon enough that this place will set things right sooner or later. He'll get what he deserves eventually without any intervention from us. Until that day comes I'll do what I can. Make sure no harm comes to you." You let out a sharp moan of his name when his lips glided across your skin in an open-mouthed kiss, feeling your body grow weak when you felt his tongue lick at your skin. "The best way to do that is to make sure he sees you're spoken for." He kissed his way up to your mouth again, both of you groaning into each other's mouths when his tongue slid past your lips and tangled with your own. "Make him see that you're mine."
"Am I, though?" You cursed your filterless mouth for letting the question leave your lips.
"If you want to be," he shot back with a boyish smile, pressing another kiss to your lips, lightly nipping at your bottom lip. "For the illusion. For the night. For longer. Whichever you choose."
You felt overwhelmed with emotions, but part of you felt inclined to trust in his words that things would be set right soon enough, the conviction in his tone reassuring you and allowing your mind to focus on the fire that was spreading throughout your entire body. The only response you could give him was a little nod before he gave you a devilish smirk and pressed harder against you, his hand sliding down your torso and working its way under your dress.
"Oh sweet girl," he cooed when his fingers slid up the inside of your thigh, coming into contact with the slick fabric of your panties. "Tell me this is for me. Make my night, I beg of you."
He traced up the length of your slit with the tips of his fingers, applying just the slightest bit of pressure when he reached your clit, circling the hardening nub with expert precision and coaxing an answer from you. "Who else…would it be for?" you gasped, arching against him and letting out a moan drowned out by the party going on mere feet away from you.
Your arched back gave him the chance to wrap his free arm around you and pull you flush against him, kissing a trail from your lips down your neck and stopping at the base of your throat, biting and sucking a bruise into the skin. "You'll have to watch your words, darling. You're making it quite difficult to be gentle with you."
Those last words had you throwing all your inhibitions into the wind. "Then don't be. You said you wanted them to see that I'm yours if I wanted to be?" You pulled him by the lapels of his coat into a searing kiss, catching you both by surprise. "I want to be. Kiss me, fuck me, do what you want with me. Show them. Make them all see that I'm yours."
You buried your face in the crook of his neck, muffling your moans into his coat as he pulled the fabric of your panties to the side and slid two sinfully long fingers inside of you, twisting and scissoring at your walls readying you for him.
"Look at me, sweet girl," he growled, pressing you flat against the wall and lightly grasping your chin with his free hand. The sight of his stormy gaze becoming near black from his dilated pupils stole your breath away.
He curled his fingers upwards, finding a spot that made you completely delirious that your thoughts swirled in your head. The only thought that remained, the only one that mattered, was Laing. And the absolute devastation he was about to put you through.
His free hand slid down the side of your body, grabbing your leg and hoisting it up to wrap around his waist, opening you up even more for him and pressing your bodies closer together. The thumping music from the party was overpowered by your heart furiously pulsing in your ears, a knot tightening more and more with every sensuous stroke of his fingers at that tender spot inside you.
"Come for me, little temptress," he grunted, his breath hot against your skin as he rested his forehead against yours, giving you a knowing smile before lightly rubbing tight circles against your clit with his thumb, eliciting a scream of his name that had a handful of people diverting their attention to what was transpiring between you and the building's resident doctor out here in the balcony. You could still feel your walls clenching and spasming even after he'd pulled his fingers from you.
The air left your lungs when he wrapped his hand around your other leg and your feet left the ground before he moved you away from the wall. "What--" Your words died in a high-pitched whine when your back made contact with the cold surface of the table, the sight of Laing standing over you and unbuckling his belt kicking your racing heart into overdrive.
"I think they all need a touch more convincing," he told you, a devilish grin spread across his face as he lined himself up at your entrance and sliding to the hilt inside of you in a single thrust. Watching him throw his head back, neck muscles tense as he let out a moan of pure decadence would be a memory that might stay with you for decades to come. "F-fuck, it's like I was made for you, sweet girl."
He set a steady pace, both of you moaning and screaming into the night every time your hips came together. But what had your mind swimming was the way he lifted your leg and positioned it so that your ankle rested on his shoulder, turning his head to press a tender kiss to the reddening strip of skin caused by the strap of your shoe. The tenderness of the action in stark contrast with the way he rocked his hips into yours making you whine and moan his name like a wolf in heat.
His other hand moved up the side of your body, fingers running along the slit opening at the cleavage of your dress. "May I?"
Your lack of filter once again had you cursing yourself. "You're already inside me, are you really asking permission to touch my tits?" He gave you that boyish smile again as you nodded your assent, his hand quickly working its way under the fabric to move the breezy fabric aside and expose your breast to the cold night air.
Near-obsidian eyes roamed your body laid out on the table before him, from the lustful expression on your face down to where your bodies were connected, the doctor biting his lip before leaning down to slant his mouth over hours in a frenzied kiss, your tongues tangling together as you buried your fingers in his hair. The slightest pull at his short curls had him growling against your mouth before he broke the kiss, making his way down to take your nipple into his mouth, grazing his teeth ever so slightly against the pebbled skin and making you release your hold on him when your eyes rolled back from the sheer ecstasy of it all.
When his thrusts became erratic you felt his hand at the swollen nub above your entrance, you let out a scream of his name as your climaxes overtook you both. You didn't know what came over you when you bit into his neck as you rode out the waves of your orgasm, but he took it as a cue to sink his teeth into the swell of your breast, both of you surely leaving a mark on each other that would stay for at least the next couple of days.
"There's no way I'm letting you drive home after this," he said softly once he caught his breath, pressing soft kisses to your cheek and temple while you were still trying to ground yourself. "Please let me escort you back to your place."
"Don't worry there won't be any driving required," you answered him, your mind still in a haze. "Just a walk to the elevator. 25C."
"Is that so?" You only nodded at him, giving him a fully sated smile as he moved the fabric of your dress to cover you again before tucking himself back into his trousers. He held your hand as he helped you off the table, pulling you into his arms again as soon as you were back on your feet to capture your lips in a tender kiss. "Well in that case…hello, neighbor."
Tumblr media
This wasn't how you expected your night to end when you woke up this morning to Charlotte ceaselessly banging on the door to the apartment you'd just moved in to, practically begging you to go to the tenant party to both accompany her and celebrate your new home and the fact that you now lived so close to each other. You were more than ready to have ended the night with aching feet, slightly buzzed, and alone in bed. As you always did.
You didn't expect it to end feeling near boneless after spending the last few hours with the man that had initially been your companion for said party as a favor to your sister, bodies slick with sweat and without a stitch of clothing separating you. Coherent thoughts had ceased to form the second you two stepped foot into your apartment and he immediately hoisted you into his arms and carried you to the bedroom, and he brought you to orgasm so many times you lost count.
There was an air of utterly sexed out bliss that surrounded you that only shattered when both your labored breathing had evened out, and he pressed a kiss to your collarbone and spoke again. "I believe this is where we part ways, sweet girl."
Would it be entirely too dramatic if you said you felt your heart splinter at his words? Probably. But in the moment, that was how it felt. Like a rug had been pulled out from under your feet and you were immediately dropped from a vibrant fantasy world and straight back to the bleak reality that was your day to day.
"Should've known this was coming," you scoffed out, propping yourself up on your elbows as he pulled away, unable to hide the sting of disappointment playing at your features. "Should be used to it by now I really don't know why I even thought you'd be different, but fuck it. That's on me--"
"Wait, Y/N stop. Did…did you think I was about to leave because--"
"You got what you wanted. Fucked the new girl, novelty's gone, probably realized my sister's better, really I'm used to the song and dance. So really, everything's fine. Go. I'm a big girl, I'm not about to cry and moan about it." If only you could have fought against the tears that were stinging at the back of your eyes so you could actually sell the pitch.
"And here I thought you were about to kick me out of bed so I was just beating you to the punch. Leave with a shred of dignity, you know?"
His muttered words felt like ice water washing over your entire body, immediately reaching for him in the relative darkness of the bedroom, your fingertips tracing the marblesque features of his face as you touched your nose to his. "Who would ever be stupid enough to kick you out of bed?"
Your breath hitched when his fingers curled at the curve of your waist, his thumb stroking your skin and lightly brushing the underside of your breast. "If you say you don't want me to go then--"
"Stay." The word came out all too quickly, making you bite the inside of your cheek from how desperate you saw yourself the second you said it. No taking it back, now, you inwardly hissed. Fucking pathetic. "I--I mean only if you want to, if you don't really no harm no foul just pretend I didn't say anything--"
The rest of your words died in a surprised little squeak when he cut you off with a kiss, wrapping his arm around you and maneuvering you so that your back was once again laid flat on the mattress. "I want to," he sighed against your lips.
You two had settled into the center of the bed, your head resting on his shoulder while his fingertips traced down the length of your arm. "For longer," you blurted out, pressing a kiss to the corner of his jaw.
"For longer what, sweetheart?"
The endearment slipping from his lips had your heart doing  backflips in your chest. "You said something earlier about being yours if I wanted. For tonight or for longer. There's my answer. For longer."
The smile he gave you somehow shone brilliantly despite the dim lighting of your bedroom, with only the moon providing even the smallest glimmer of light. "You might reconsider that answer once I subject you to my cooking in the morning, darling."
"Well, nobody's perfect, Doctor Laing, but I won't hold that against you."

A/N: Welcome to Kinktober, everybody! I'm a couple days late because I literally just finished banging out (pun absolutely fully intended) the smut scene minutes before posting this. Like I mentioned before, I'm hoping to do 5 stories as an initial goal but I have 15 planned out. Anything that I don't end up making in October will still be made somewhere down the line, it's just gonna move down the priority ladder.
It has been a long while since I wrote smut, so please be gentle, I feel like I am babey again with how rusty I am. And also it's the first time I'm writing Laing so also…be gentle.
I'm already working on the next story which will be 'bath/shower' with an older Magnus Martinsson, so hopefully that'll be reaching your dashes in the next few days 🫡
Here's a gif for everyone that reads until the end:

Stuck in an elevator || Laing || Kinktober 2022 || 18+ ||
Part of my Kinktober Masterlist that you can find ~here~
My main Masterlist can be found ~~here~~
Summary: life in the high rise is hectic but your interest is caught by one specific doctor.
Warning: blowjobs, semi-public sex, smoking
Tumblr media
Life in the High Rise was helpful. If you tried, you could work, live, shop and die there. There was no true reason to leave if you got a job within the apartment block. The power loss was a setback, however, as there was nothing to keep the food fresh, no phones working to order new food, the air conditioning stopped working and the High Rise fell into madness. You powered through, though, trying to get on with life as best as you could considering the circumstances.
A type of system had developed among the many floors of the apartment blocks, a social classing system that spanned most of the building with the shopping concourse soon being considered ‘No-Man’s-Land’ for the unspoken civil war between the lower floors and the upper.
You lived on the fourteenth floor, a quaint apartment that was overshadowed constantly by falling debris from floors above you. Still, your floor was one of the last to lose full power. You were so very proud of your self-made filtering system to get the bad air smell out of your apartment. You wouldn’t deny that the madness that descended upon the building hadn’t sunk its fearsome claws into your brain and pulled you below sanity.
One person caught your eye. He was trying his best to remain sane despite the building falling into disrepair around him. Robert Laing was a doctor and still left the High Rise to attend his job at the medical school. You watched him every morning as he walked through the seas of cars, day by day forgetting where he had parked the night before. He was slowly starting to return earlier and earlier, developing that need to remain in the High Rise that absolutely everybody else had already drowned in.
Today the doctor returned at just gone one in the afternoon. His hair was dishevelled and he had forgone the suit jacket, his tie askew and his pace brisk. Eagerly, you left your apartment and waited exactly ten seconds before calling the elevator that Doctor Laing always used to get to work. You knew that the elevator would come get you first so when you stepped into it, you grinned as the doors slid shut and you began going down.
No one else wanted to leave the High Rise so they weren’t hindering the elevator's trip down to the ground floor to greet the good Doctor. When the doors slid open, your eyes met with the Doctor and you grinned, “Doctor Laing,” you began, your voice hoarse but sultry, “how was work?”
The man’s eyes darkened as he stared at you, visibly bothered in the break of his routine. No one usually was on the elevator when he got back after bailing out of work to return to the sanctuary he had built in his apartment on the 25th floor. “Miss Y/L/N,” he responded carefully, stepping into the elevator beside you and pressing the worn-down ‘25’ button.
“You’re home early, doctor,” you purred, stepping closer to the doctor and sliding your hands up his bare forearms, “doesn’t the medical school shut down at five?”
“I couldn’t,” Laing returned quickly, his voice thick and mournful. You knew that he loved working at the school but he was being pulled into the blinding lure that was the dystopia of the High Rise.
You hummed and lit a cigarette, bringing it to your lips before you puffed it out and turned to look at the good Doctor, watching his jaw tick and his tongue swipe out of his mouth to wet his lips. “Dear Doctor,” you whispered, watching Laing’s eyes flick to you, “are you alright? You seem a little pale.”
“Perfectly fine,” the Doctor responded quickly, watching the floor numbers changing before you heard a delicate ‘damn’ and the emergency stop button is pressed. Once the elevator was stopped, he whirled around to face you, “what is it that you want, miss Y/L/N?”
“Just to welcome you home,” you whispered, offering the cig to him and smirking as he took it and brought it to his lips, “it seems that you are becoming just like everyone else here, mad.”
The doctor scoffed and walked towards you, releasing in the fact that you stepped backwards, intimidated by his tall stature and the expression on his face.
Laing slowly cupped your cheek and looked deep into your eyes before his other hand shifted to between your legs and he slowly pressed his hand to your dripping panties.
You bit your lip and whined as you began to roll your hips, your slick gathering on the material of your panties. You watched as Laing's eyes darkened, his head leaning down to pepper kisses on your neck. You whined before dropping to your knees, your hands slowly trailing down the sides of his body as you gazed up at him. A sultry smirk spread across your lips as you cupped his hardening length through his trousers.
Pulling down the zipper and his boxers, you practically drooled at the sight of his hard cock ready for you. With an eager moan, you gently held the base of his cock as you pressed a kitten lick to the tip. Laing cursed below his breath and his hand fell to caress your cheekbone as you began to press it into your mouth. The feel of him on your tongue was bliss. You had yearned for his cock in your mouth since the first time you had met him on your way out of the High Rise for the last time two months ago.
"Shit, Y/N," Robert cursed, thrusting into your mouth gently, listening to the glorious sounds of your approval.
Your hand held the base of his cock as you began to bob your head, one of your hands slipping beneath your thighs to toy with your clit as you increased your movement.
Laing looked so delighted at the feeling of his cock being warmed in the wet warmth of your mouth, his head tossed back and he released a primal groan as his hips thrust into your mouth. You moaned and continued to circle your clit as your other hand cupped his balls and squeezed.
"Oh, fuck!" Laing cursed, eyebrows being pulled together from the overwhelming pleasure that you were giving him, "fuck, nngghh, I'm gonna cum, fuck, Y/N, gonna cum."
You smirked and continued to increase your pace, taking him deeper down your throat until you felt the weak whine of the Doctor and you settled as thick ropes of hot cum filled the back of your throat and Laing hissed.
"Oh my," Laing whispered blissfully, sheathing himself and helping you to his feet. As you got to your feet, you righted your skirt and panties before the elevator dinged on your floor and you stepped out.
"Will I see you soon?" the Doctor asked with a smile and you shrugged.
"I'm throwing a party in two days. Maybe we could do a little more than just that," you purred before turning on your heel down to your apartment.
You left behind an astounded doctor who was smirking with a spring in his step all the way down to his apartment on the 25th floor.

Hope you enjoyed!

Chapter One//Chapter Two//Chapter Three//Chapter Four//Chapter Five//Chapter Six
The next week, it was announced that Lady Sif agreed to train you.
You had butterflies in your stomach walking into the room on the training room. It was normally used for Asgard’s soldiers and guards, but anyone was free to have it when needed. Loki’s clever lies to his parents were that he wanted the mortal guests to take advantage of the opportunities of exercise here to pass the time. He was with you when you walked out for one-on-one training with Lady Sif. Hal and Robert were the ones behind. Jonathan was going to go through the city to gather information about Grendel. Thomas had to be in his workshop, studying the designs of daggers.
It shouldn’t have been a surprise to see another woman rechecking her gear and clothes on the floor. One who wasn't you. In your sportswear, you suddenly felt incredibly overdressed. Her shirt had such short sleeves! You could see all of her arms and she was wearing trousers! Leather ones with daggers sheathed at the sides! But was still every bit as beautiful if she wore a gown. Pale skin and long dark hair with piercing, blue eyes. She could have been Loki’s long-lost sister.
Sister…you remembered the Prophet’s words. The blue skin and red eyes…why…he was a “son”? But no- now was not the time to ask. Especially as training was starting to begin.
She put strands of cloth around her hands. They looked like fingerless gloves, the kind that Jonathan and Robert would make when they sparred. She flexed her white fingers and checked the tightness. She muttered something and then looked up at you.
“Oh! Are you-”
“I am Y/N, it is nice to meet you,” you introduced with a curtsy out of habit.
“Why, dear Sif! Glad you are here!” Loki greeted.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I be?” she asked. The Trickster god gave another of his theatrical gestures towards her.
“This is the enchanting Sif. She was the first-ever female warrior here in Asgard! When they all said maidens could not fight- she was the first to prove them wrong!” Loki boasted.
Sif flared her nostrils, but she kept a half-smile.
“Eh, give or take a few thousand years,” she replied.
She turned to the two others, cocking an eyebrow.
“And who are these men?” she asked.
Loki gestured to the guests.
“Why- this is his grace, Prince Hal…”
Hal made a gallant bow.
“And this- this is Robert Laing…” Loki continued.
“Oh- Doctor! Doctor Laing- Earned the degree ,” he said with a lick of his lips. He adjusted his tie on his suit. He could wear one since he was not training now.
Sif dropped her smile.
“Oh- and how do those studies prove you’re better than anyone else?” she questioned him.
“Just wait until you’re the one bleeding out half to death,” Laing retorted with his grin still on her.
Sif shot him a glare.
“I don’t bleed. I make others bleed,” she replied.
There was a sudden chill in the room. Robert backed down and Hal chewed the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.
“Hmm- we have talked quite a bit. Well,  let’s begin-” she announced. “Get a practice sword.”
In the corner, there were wooden poles and then there were normal swords. You nodded and grabbed a pole that was stationed and ready.
“No, Y/N! The ones with blades!” she requested.
Oh dear. That’s different. You had yet to try fighting with actual swords. You nervously took one and got it out, unsheathing it with a schliiiiiiick sound. You swallowed heavily as Sif easily grabbed the one next to you. You weighed it in your hand, watching the end of that blade and how many lives, even your own, could be ended with it.
“I see the look on your face. Do you want to be a warrior? You must learn to fight with a real weapon. You have to be ready, Y/N.” she said.
“Alright…it’s only new…” you said though it was only half your voice.
You walked out into the middle of the floor. The three men stood by the sides with some chairs to watch you both. Hal, the expert on swords too, watched with an examining eye. Robert folded his arms. Loki rested a hand on his chin as he folded his arms.
“Alright now parry-” Sif ordered.
You parried- moving the sword forward as she threw hers down in a heartbeat. You jumped a little from the impact. There was the sharp sound of the blades colliding that rang through your ears.
“Decent. Now don’t think too hard mortal lady- just act,” Sif instructed.
She thrust her sword forward. You managed to block it by raising yours impulsively. She was fast and aggressive. When you tried to move forward she would find a weak point and raise it to you. Then you would jump back. You kept fleeing from her, dodging her. Blocking her constant, attacks, your feet shuffling further back. Would she even give you a second to attack her?  You backed up from her constant parries. Her attacks were forward and your defenses backward until your back foot grazed a wall. It then hit you- she has backed you into a corner.
“I’m not sure if you’re training or if Lady Sif wants another fight to win!” Robert quipped.
Sif’s eyes turned towards the doctor, gritting her bared teeth.
In a swift second, Sif reached into the side of her pants. She pulled out a small dagger. She looked at Robert and hurled it towards him. The three ducked out of the way. As Robert moved, it landed on the wall next to him, barely grazing his cheek. His eyes were wide and his face pink- as if he couldn’t tell if he hated this or actually secretly enjoyed it.
You tried to wiggle out, think of a next move as Sif was distracted. Then- a feeling hit you. An odd feeling.
You could sense her. Sense her movement. Sense the movement of everyone. You felt their footprints- where they were. You could sense how many swords and poles were nearby. Everyone’s heartbeat. The other dagger in Sif’s pocket. The guards outside the door. You could feel the feet shuffling in the halls in the next room. As if you were asleep and now awake. You felt your head spin a little and put your free hand to your forehead.
“Sif, I feel…I feel a little odd…” you remarked.
Her feet rumbled as you sensed her right before you and raised her sword in your direction.
“Now- Y/N…what do you do?” she asked, raising your sword. It was right before your face. You backed further up to the wall.
“I…I don’t know!” you confessed.
Sif kept her eyes on you and her sword still pointed at you. You tried to swipe hers away, but she countered it and thrust again forward. You raised the sword up to block it. She pushed forward and you backward. The blades slicing against each other.
“Come on- focus. Hesitation is when the enemy will gut you open-”
“I really don’t!”  you cried.
“Come on! What’s your first instinct, mortal?!” Sif urged.
You couldn’t think straight. Only the humiliation of your defeat weighing on you. And the hotness of the room, the smells, and the rumbling of feet as someone walked in the next hall. It was too much, too much. In a wave of emotion, you pushed your sword in front of you to her on impulse with a slight shout. Sif snorted, raising an eyebrow at the weapon you stabbed forward.
You felt everything get white hot inside you. The feeling began at the top of your head and waved down to your hands- then to the sword
“Decent, but-”
It happened in a matter of seconds- so fast, you barely processed it.
Fire shot out. It shot out of your hands and through the sword until it blazed before Sif.
Sif let out a scream of surprise and backed off. Her sword jumped out of her hands and skittered across the floor. Still, the fire kept burning, blazing. Everyone jumped at the sight of it.
“Why…what…what is this?! What is going on?” Sif cried. The fire added another thing of heat to the room and its crackling was the only sound for a second.
It then stopped. But the air still felt scorched and warm. It smelt of sulfur. When you checked the sword, it was partially burnt. You dropped it and checked your hands. Little twinges of flame jumped from it. But your skin was unhurt. Then they slowed down and they were as normal, the small star winking at you.
“I…I don’t know- I don’t. I’m sorry, Sif.” you explained.
Sif regained her composure.
“The enemy is surprised, that’s good. Now what do you do- Y/N!? The enemy is surprised and unarmed. Don’t hesitate!”
As you thrust the partially burnt sword forward, Sif jumped back. Her eyes went to the sword she dropped. She reached for it.
With a bit of shock, you felt that sensation again- focusing on that little practice sword of Sif’s. The white-hot buzzing. Something else poured out - almost like a breath. A whiff of energy.
The sword skittered across the floor, unmoved. Far from Sif.
There was utter silence for a second. The men all stood up with astonished looks on their face. Sif dropped her jaw and turned to you.
“Loki- is this another trick?” she asked.
He shook his head and shrugged.
“No…it seems as if…this was none other than our dear Mortal ladies doing…and there’s only one explanation….magic,” he answered, eyes scanning over every detail of the room and the sword.
You felt dizzy again. You set aside your sword, feeling everyone’s eyes on you, making you uneasy.
“I’m so sorry but it’s…it’s never…never happened before…” you blubbered out. Now the source of all the attention. Like a child called out for trouble in school before her entire class.
Sif urged the men to come over.
“Training is done. Please get the queen- she has something in her. It needs to be checked. Now!” she demanded.
At once, all of you hurried to Frigga in her chambers. She was enjoying the view from her balcony when she turned her head.
“Mother- hurry- we must talk! About our mortal girl-” Loki insisted.
She walked inside and sat down gracefully on a chair. In brief, all of you told her of what happened.
“Why…magic? Our Y/N?” she gasped.
You nodded. She then reached forward and took your hands. She studied the star marks, tracing them with her finger, her eyes bulging wide as she really took it in. She then turned upward, her eyebrows crossed. Her voice dropped to a sharp, strict tone.
“Loki…there is only one spell that leaves a mark like that. Why is Y/N here? Not just out of the goodness of your heart? How did you meet her? Was she hurt or sick?” she asked.
“Yes. Dying, in fact.” Loki reported.
Frigga’s lips tightened.
“And you used that spell?” she asked.
“Yes, I did.” the prince admitted.
“My son, did you read everything the book said about it.”
Loki shrugged. He put on his uneasy, half-laughing smile where only part of a chuckle escaped.
“Only the parts that were important!”
She gave him a stern look.
“That I…thought were important,” Loki admitted. Smile dropping, he folded his hands and looked down, red with embarrassment. For no child was immune to a scolding from their mother, even gods.
“Including the bargain to seal it?” she asked.
“Yes, mother.”
She let out a deep sigh. Then she walked to her bookshelf. She got out a large, ancient book bound in worn, tan leather. She moved it to her desk and flipped through the pages. Finding what she was looking for, she stopped at one. She read quietly for a minute and then looked at you.
“You have Prince Loki to thank for this, Y/N. This spell…since the magic must go inside the person to heal them, it never leaves. In short, you now have magic, my dear,” she announced.
“Oh…oh dear god!” you gasped, moving a hand to your mouth. Glad at least flames did not burst out to burn your face.
“Why, I do like to be called a dear, thank you,” Loki smirked. You gave him a look.
“This is not a joking matter!” you retorted to him.
Frigga folded her hands. Sif, Hal, and Robert all stood watching like they were the audience of a rather suspenseful play.
“Anything else? Other than what happened at training?” the queen questioned.
“I…I’ve had dreams of the future- possible futures…” you explained.
Your mind drifted back to Stella. The dream you had of her future suicide attempt.  You did everything you could you took comfort in one fact. She made you a promise and Stella would always honor her promises. You wrote to her regularly as you did your parents, sending Thomas to deliver the letters and head back. Like she said, if she was engaged, you would know. Her letters were not of proposals, definitely, not of any men she had her eye on. They were of the ordinary daily life- visits, occasional dances, farmers with their crops, fishermen with their fish, the most tantalizing piece of news that a small town could offer. She was wise not to discuss what was happening at church with you. But no engagements, at least not for her. Perhaps her tragic future was avoided by now.
Frigga checked the book and tapped her finger on the page.
“It says right there- visions of the possible futures. Occasional-usually in dreams. And have you ever sensed someone near you- far away? Sensed everything around you? Their actions?”
You nodded.
“Yes. It happened today with Sif,” you confirmed.
Frigga looked at her son and then back at you.
“Have voices appeared in your head?” she asked.
“One specific voice,” you answered. “Loki’s.”
“I’m not surprised. Do you hear her thoughts too?” she asked Loki.
He folded his arms and lifted his chin a little.
“As clearly as I hear your words, Mother. Even when I was in Asgard and she in Midgard,” he answered.
Frigga turned a page, her finger gliding down as she found a paragraph.
“Here it is listed- the thoughts of the one who cast the spell and the one healed are linked in their minds….” she read aloud.
She scanned the rest of it, then closed the book. But she went to you, touching your cheek sweetly.
“It could be worse. But this is a mere symptom of the spell. You will learn how to live with it.” she said.
“How? I don’t want to…to…hurt anyone!” you replied.
Frigga softened her face at your words.
“Oh, of course not! Do not blame yourself! No one has been hurt! You see…”
Her eyes turned to Loki with a small smile.
“My son should be the one to help you,” she suggested.
Loki’s jaw dropped and he took a step forward.
“Help her? You’re the expert on magic- why can’t you do it?” he asked.
“My dear boy, you were the one who chose to do the spell on her. And you will face the consequences for it rather than running away,” she explained.
He put his hands on his hips and he opened his mouth to say something, then he closed. Frigga kept a smile as she looked between the two of you. Loki swallowed his Adam’s apple bobbing. You exchanged a look, then he turned to her.
“Alright- then…then I will,” he said.
Frigga clapped her hands together with a smile.
“Good- begin tomorrow with the mind reading. It can be done to where two can speak to each other seamlessly would rather it be clear than disruptive. Now-dear Lady Sif, Hal, Robert- I am so sorry I haven’t spoken with all of you. I’ve been busy. How are all of you? Let’s call for some wine and a little bite to eat before dinner as we all chat, shall we?”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
It was when you woke up the next morning that it hit you. You were no longer some ordinary “mortal” woman. No- now you had powers! To think, if you could go back in time and tell yourself as a child, what would she think! Not to mention, what would everyone back home think of a woman who actually had powers by accident? Oh, they would all scream in terror if a flame shot out of your hands. Secretly, you were thrilled. As if winning some luck of the draw.
You walked outside to the gardens. It was right at the start of the afternoon when the sun was the most warm. It wasn’t usually when you liked to walk outside due to the heat, but you wanted to test your newfound abilities. To see if you could figure anything out. You decided to head There was a middle valley in the palace garden grounds. A small grassy part amidst some hydrangea bushes with no trees for shade.
There were many things you expected to walk into the garden to see. The buds open. Gardeners digging holes. Little bugs about the dirt. Pleasant, familiar, comfortable things.
You weren’t expecting to see a naked man.
Pale, and muscular with ripped abdominals and strong biceps despite his lean frame lying down on a bench. A towel on his head and a book over his crotch. They were the only thing on him.
Ripped with shock, you let out a scream on instinct. To your increased horror, he got up the book shifted. You let out another shout and shielded your eyes with your arm. You thought you would see…that part of a man on your wedding night! Not unwarned and unwanted in a garden!
But he scrambled up and set the towel and book over the most offending part of his body. When you peeked up, his hair had a redder sheen, and though he was in the sun he was pale. But you had to admit you did like the sight of all the muscles on him.
“Hello there!” Robert nervously chuckled.
“What on earth are you doing?!” you cried. Your eyes trying very hard to focus on his face.
“Uh- I just- I’m sunbathing! And I fell asleep!”
“People-people really sunbathe in the future in their free time?!” you questioned.
“Well, uh, yes,” Robert replied.
“Bare naked as a babe?!”
“Also yes.”
“Have you gone mad, Robert!?” you cried.
“Not for a month!”
You took a step back, Robert noting the look on your face. He blushed with embarrassment.
“I am so immediately sorry, Y/N. I didn’t know you would be here! I’ll try to keep it in my room. I’ll talk to Loki. Ask him to conjure a-a-a-sun tan machine or something.” he tried to compromise. His feet started to shuffle to the bushes as if he were Adam after devouring the apple.
“People make machines for sun tans?!” you asked.
“Oh, they do! I’ll tell you- my- my robe is near this rose bush-give me a minute…”
He leaned in and got it. You turned away as he put the white, cloth robe over himself. The electricity of the shock still running through you.
“Alright, Y/N, I’m decent!” he announced.
You turned around. Robert tied a knot of the cloth around his waist.
“Sunbathing naked?! Goodness-and did you say…are you sure you’re not still mad?!” you cried.
Robert froze. The joking smile on his face dropped from the embarrassed, cheeky smile.
“I’m not,” he replied sternly.
He took a step towards you, his voice serious.
“Please, don’t bring it up with the others. I don’t like other people discussing it.”
Shame flooded your system.
“Oh-I…I am so sorry…I…I didn’t know…” you apologized, feeling your shoulders slump.
He gathered the towel and book in his hands.
“Well…now you do…Y/N, I….I…I’ll go to my room now,” the no-longer-madman said as he walked out.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Loki did not take you at once into either the indoor or outdoor training grounds. Instead, both of you merely went to a table in a dining hall. He plopped down, his smile never leaving his face as he looked at you. You were dressed in a white day dress with little pink dots all over it, moving your skirt as always so you could sit down on the chair. No one else was around to witness this, only the two of you.
“Well then- to start. Let’s practice the whole thought business!” he announced.
“Aren’t you scared I will scorch the table?” you asked.
He leaned back in his chair, folding his arms with a shrug.
“Why should it be? Tables can be replaced, but not you. And I’ve been able to access your own thoughts quite easily for a while. We both know that by now. You should learn how to send them and block mine. Unless you want to hear my voice in your ears to lull you to sweet dreams at night. I will be happy to oblige.”
You gave him a scowl.
“You’re a scoundrel,” you responded.
“Always have been and will be,” he replied with a smile.
You looked forward at him. You folded your hands on your lap. It was a nice dining hall. Right near an open balcony with tall columns of marble around you. The bright sunlight shone down as it overlooked the skyline of Asgard.
“All right- I’m going to send my thoughts out. To you. I will make them clear.” Loki announced.
Then there was nothing. You heard nothing. You felt the rustle of the bustle on the back of your skirt as you leaned back in the chair.
With a deep breath, you heard Loki’s voice in your head.
“Hello there, Y/N. It’s another lovely day here in Asgard. Wouldn’t it funny if I snipped off a bit of Sif’s hair when she isn’t looking!”
“Don’t do that! It’s mean! And she will scream at you!” you thought back.
He made a gesture with his hands and spoke out loud.
“There you go! That’s far better! You hear mine- I hear yours!” he announced. “All because you let me in, my dear. I read it in the book.”
“What else did it say?” you asked, moving your hands to touch the table. It was long and wooden, carved with ancient runes. You nervously traced one with your fingernail.
“Your thoughts are an instrument one can never stop playing. Only you may play them loudly or quietly. But one can muffle out the music of another., Y/N. Now- try to block out my thoughts to you.”
With a deep breath,  you clenched your body. Willing the invisible thoughts of his to not enter your own head.
“Not working.” Loki’s voice replied in your head.
You let out a huff of air through your nostrils.
“How does one block it?” you questioned him.
Loki slightly tucked his chin.
“Hmmm, yes, I see how stiff you are holding yourself, your body. And this time I know it’s not because of this ‘bustle’ thing.  Blocking does not mean bracing oneself- body or mind. Think of it like…like a shield…try to put a shield out. Imagine one. And relax a little.” he guided.
You imagined a shield. You saw many among the guards of Asgard. Tall, circular, and bronze. You imagined it up against you, protecting you, bundling up inside it. Warm and safe. Loki let out another small breath. He sat forward on the chair, leaning an elbow on it. His hand touching his chin and grinning. You braced for his voice in your head again.
But the shield worked. You didn’t hear one of his. There was nothing. Finally! Your physical training was slow, but at least that was one thing you could get right!
You imagined lowering it down. Sure enough, there were thoughts of
“Y/N, the dress you have on today looks quite lovely, especially when the sunlight hits it.”
A little flutter began in your stomach. You couldn’t give into his flatter, no. You sent out another one, looking into his blue eyes. One of a pair of many you learned to get used to.
“Trying to recover yourself over the remark about my breasts?” you thought back.
He dropped his smile, lowering his head.
“I apologize. I knew it would rile you- get you to fight back.”
“Thank you for acknowledging that, Loki. You have quite the presumptuous nature- I’ve figured that out so far.”
Then there was no reply. You heard no thoughts. You tried to send something out to him, but there was nothing for a minute. Then two. Then three. You blinked and tried to send it out.
“Loki? Loki-what-”
He waved open with his hands and spoke aloud.
“See, Y/N- now my shield was up. Let’s try this little back and forth, shall we?” he asked.
It went on like tennis. It was shaky- but at least you had a hand at it. It was a start.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
The day came to announce the heir. It was all heralded that morning so quickly, that there wasn’t time to process it. It was the gatekeeper, Heimdall, who resounded it out before the city balcony. All of you standing in the back room as he looked down upon the people. Heimdall smiled at them and then announced with his rich, sonorous voice to all.
“Odin has named Thor as his heir! Prepare for the ceremony later today at sunset!”
When you looked for Loki, he immediately left the room. Thor smiled wide before servants ushered him out the other door.
There was so much bustle, servants running to and fro, platters of food delivered from the kitchen, your head spun. And Thor was never seen to discuss this. And not Loki either. It wasn’t that you didn’t want Thor to be happy. But…you knew today was going to be hard for the younger brother. Yes, Loki was cheeky and arrogant and flirted to get what he wanted and fond of getting into trouble- but you had to admit…you felt bad for him today.
The ceremony began as promised at sunset. You were astounded to see so many people about to watch.  To think this many people lived in Asgard! Were they gods too? Mortals like you who just lived in a different world? Curiosity bubbled inside you. You were just used to your plain little life in a plain little town where every house was white and you saw the same faces daily. But here- there was life. Excitement. Not even London, you imagined, had this much of a crowd for anything. They crowded around. They gathered around the large, open space before the throne with a walkway.
Everyone dressed for the occasion. Odin wore his silver armor and winged helmet, his eye patch seemed to gleam like a jewel. Frigga was beautiful in her golden dress, with a smile on her face. Loki stood in his deep green with his large, horned helmet. You were in your own russet velvet dress for parties. Jonathan wore his blue suit and Robert his grey one. Hal was dashing in dark velvet, his curls combed back. Thomas was in his black suit, the bronze chain of a pocket watch sticking out across his stomach. Sif herself remained in her armor but was placed to stand near the throne with the other Asgardian warriors.
“Let us now raise a cheer for my son- your future king, Thor!!” Odin announced.
Thor was brought down on a chariot, wielding a large hammer. His large red cape and long blonde hair flew in the wind. He had a giant smile as he showed it his hammer. The crowd roared for their future king. Everyone was smiling. Everyone…except the younger brother of the future king.
You looked over at Loki. His hands folded before him, the usually mischievous gleam in his eyes dimmed. He seemed far away, small, and alone.
“Loki…how are you? What are you thinking? You can tell me…” you sent your thoughts out.
There was no response.
You couldn’t bother with Hal and Sif trying to outdrink each other at the banquet after. Robert kept trying to flirt with her and she told him to bother off, only she didn’t say the word “bother.” The doctor backed away, hands up in defense. Thomas and Jonathan sat next to each other at the meal. It was hardly a wonder so many Asgardian women made their eyes toward the two handsome men. Many maids offered to refill their goblets with batting eyelashes. Jonathan was polite to them, but never seemed to return their attention. Thomas was a different matter, however. He was smiling, chatting, and charming all of them. Thor was at the center, telling stories and laughing as people lauded their upcoming ruler.
But you had no interest in the celebration going on in the hall. There was one gentleman in green who was missing from all this.
You felt your sensation again. Despite the rumble of everyone’s food digesting, you felt Loki’s presence. Locating him easily.  So you got up, going to the stone walkway in the next room. The cool air of the night washing over you. Seeing Loki in a marble corner, staring out at the city. He only looked out at the window at the starry sky and two moons shining through the window. He jumped a little when he turned and saw you.
“I’m not surprised….” he said.
“But it’s still disappointing…” you acknowledged.
He let out a deep breath. You heard Thor’s large laughter from the other end of the hall. God of Thunder suited him- everything about him was thunderous.
“I’m so sorry, Loki…you would have made a decent king,” you tried to console.
He arched up a dark eyebrow.
“Really? Me?” Loki asked. He seemed surprised, not like the other side of him that would say he knew. He turned around to look you in the eye.
You nodded.
“Yes- you would have. You took pity on a dying woman and offered to heal her. You comforted her when her heart was broken. You’re teaching me how to control my magic. You’re planning a quest to defeat a villain to protect others. You…you sent Hal after me. And I hear Robert had...”
You stopped your words. You suddenly remembered Robert asked you not to discuss the time he went mad.
“A…a hard time…” you finished.
Loki gestured with you to walk back to the dining hall. His eyes drifted towards the Baronet in black smiling as a maid refilled his jug for the third time.
“Oh, if you think Robert had a hard time, wait until you find out where Thomas came from,” he replied.
‘Thomas?” you asked.
From the smile, you saw Thomas pull out a small contraption for the maid. It was a music box that could fit in the pocket. The maid turned the knob, grinning to reveal its trickling tune. The maid laughed in delight. One would never guess he ever had a “hard time” at any point in his life.
You turned your focus back to Loki.
“But you are suffering too. Don’t let Odin or a throne determine your worth. We all appreciate you,” you said.
There was some music in the back and people raised their goblets. Many gulped it down and threw it on the floor, crying “Another!” You jumped a little at the sound of so many cups crashing on the floor at once.
“Appreciation won’t make me a hero…or Thor’s equal…” he replied as he walked off.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
You couldn’t fall asleep that night. Your heart was still breaking from the last line with Loki. He felt invisible. Unwanted. And it felt like there was nothing you could do about it. Wasn’t there a compromise? Why couldn’t there be two kings or couldn’t the kingdom be divided?
Then there were the thoughts that shot out of you. Thoughts you tried to stifle. Memories you tried to stifle. But stifling them only made them stronger when they arrived. Memories of home. The letters, the field, the white shirt, the-
No, you had to distract yourself. Not dwell. It would only make you miserable. It looks like you would have to ask for the sleeping potion again. You got out of bed, wrapping a pink shawl around your nightgown for warmth, out you went into the halls. Perhaps it would be in the kitchens or you could ask a servant. Your bare feet touched the cold stone beneath, making you shiver.
Then- there was a noise. A shuffling. Your powerful sensing was warning you. Someone was up-about. You turned around to look. No one. As you kept walking, you kept swearing you heard footsteps. Then a breath.
There was someone up and close by. Awake. It wasn’t a servant.
Oh no- could it be a spy from Grendel!? You were going to scream, use what you could. Try to move something- you feel someone there. You felt your hands grip your shawl tighter. You were unarmed- could you somehow summon flames again? Make something move? Frantically looking around, frozen with fear.
Before you could even budge, out from the darkness, Jonathan Pine appeared. He put a hand before you to silence the idea of a scream. He put a hand before his face to shush you.
Like…like…like he would, like what Will would do- no! Y/N, don’t dwell on him. It’s over! you thought. The thought then slipped away in a second. You felt yourself relax knowing it was not a spy from Grendel.
“Shhh- Y/N! It’s okay! I’m here!” Jonathan whispered.
“You scared me to death!” you hissed back, placing a hand over your slowing heart.
“I’m sorry. It’s part of my duties.” Jonathan explained.
“Duties?!” you asked, with a tilt of your head.
“Remember, I’m Loki’s spymaster. I am again- so very sorry about the scare. I’ll make it up to you. Let me take you downstairs- get you something to drink. Does that sound nice?” he asked.
“Yes, yes it does, Jonathan.”
Down you went to the kitchens of Asgard. They weren’t accustomed to tea as much. But they did have wine. And still whole bottles of the special wine that was made for the banquet today. He located two glasses and poured you both some of the red liquid. He handed it over to you.
“How did you become Loki’s spymaster? I’m curious…” you asked.
He paused. He leaned back against the counter, the glass in one hand.
“I…I’ve never talked about it much…but…I’ll tell you,” he said.
He set down his glass on the counter and then turned to look right at you.
“Y/N- you know I’m a soldier…” he began.
“Yes, I do,” you recalled.
You took a sip of the Asgardian wine-rich and dry in its flavor. Jonathan left his abandoned. You his lips tightened, and then in took in a slow breath. His voice was soft, earnest.
“I never had a family all of my life. I lost my parents. Grew up drifting in foster homes around England. The army at least was stable. It felt like I had a permanent family of my own. At first. But…but…the things I’ve seen…the things I was ordered to do…it was too much.”
He shook his short, blonde head.
“After it was done, I had to honorably leave the military. Start anew. I ended up living in Cairo, Egypt.”
“Egypt?! That sounds incredible!” you cut in. How different and far from England! It must have been hot, but he would have seen the pyramids every day!
He bobbed his head in acknowledgment. His eyes soft at your brief excitement.
“It was, Y/N. I worked at a hotel for their night shifts. Then was promoted to manager. That at least gave me something stable. A routine. It was a hotel owned by a gentleman named Freddie Hamid. Then one night…there was a woman who checked in. And this woman was his mistress…”
He looked at your face to observe your reaction. Back home, such things weren’t discussed so openly. But you swallowed the little bit of shock.
Jonathan’s features softened. And his voice became softer, sweeter.
“Her name was Sophie…but her real name was Samira. She liked expensive clothes and coffee. She drank when she was stressed. She was chatty. She had a dog she carried everywhere. She loved to flirt with the staff- even me.”
This was far different, far more vulnerable and tender than you have ever seen Jonathan.
“Did you love her?” you asked.
After a pause, he answered.
“Yes. Yes, I did. I loved her. And she loved me too. Just for that brief time, I loved her.”
“Brief? How come?” you asked.
There was one possible explanation for why. And it wasn’t good. There was a sudden heaviness in the air as he paused. He wrapped his arms around himself and looked down on the floor. Then back at you as he continued.
“Sophie had documents with her. She handed it to me to make copies, but I saw them. Proof that Freddie and his friend, Richard Roper, had access to weapons. Destructive, powerful weapons. Bombs that would wipe out entire cities. Weapons only the army should own. So I alerted the authorities. Freddie found out and beat Sophie… I discovered he and his men were capable of doing more. She was in danger. Now that it was out, she was a target. They were going to kill her- because of something I did. I begged her forgiveness, and she said she would have reported it had she been braver. She asked me for help.  So…I hid her. Took her somewhere far away…made sure she was safe…I wanted to whisk her far away. To England…”
He hunched his shoulders.
“Those authorities said she would never be safe in England. That Roper had friends there. That returning her to the hotel was the best option. To curb suspicion. She returned with her head high, confident, and smiling as she checked into her suite. I went to work. I carried about my shift like normal. Then I got word from someone…she was in danger. But when I ran into the room…it was too late….there was…was…she was killed-her blood everywhere…”
A hand flew over your mouth.
“Poor Sophie!” you gasped.
“It never left me. She never left me. She always haunted me…and she always might. The fact I brought her to death, I…I did…She would…would blame me, she probably did in her last moments…”
“But she told you herself that she didn’t resent you for the documents! That she would do the same as you! I…I don’t know if she would…you didn’t beat her like…like her….like Freddie! You were kind to her. You tried to protect her!” you commented, trying to comfort him.
He gripped the edge of the counter, his knuckles turning white.
“Then one day…the British authorities spoke to me. Asked me to help in an operation to bring Roper and his allies down. So…I decided to become a spy to avenge her.”
It was hard, I won’t bore you with the details. But to be brief,  I did it. I infiltrated him. Brought him down. I killed Freddie myself- drowned him in his own pool.”
You felt your eyes widen.
“I caught Roper and destroyed his stock. Caught him red-handed and brought him to the government. He ended up in jail, executed for his crimes.”
“How is it you managed to defeat Roper?” you asked.
You found that he smiled, both with his eyes and his smile. It was a smooth, handsome smile. He was elegant so easily and naturally.
“Sheer determination and thorough thinking. That is what will get you through anything, Y/N.”
He put his hands in his pockets.
“And after that, it was done… Loki arrived to me. Told me that he was a copy of me from another timeline, another life. Asked me to be a spy for him. Fight Grendel with him. I had no home. No family. Not even a woman. Not since…since Sophie, no. Nothing to return to…so I have nothing to lose. That’s why I’m here- where I can be useful.”
You cupped your wine glass with both hands.
“That’s quite a story, Jonathan!” you remarked.
You took a step closer. His eyes were still glossy from mentioning her again.
“Jonathan…if Sophie were here…I think she’d be proud of you. For what you did. For avenging her…now that it’s done, and if she can’t be here for you…she’d want you to be at peace,” you consoled him.
His blue eyes shone a little bit, his chest rising and falling with his breaths.
“Thank you, Y/N. If we survive, I hope I can be. I want to live a normal, peaceful life after this. No battles. No bloodshed. Just a quiet, normal life. I want to become a husband. A father. And not worry about anyone getting killed- just love my wife. Love my child. And pour all that love so they will never have to suffer what I did.”
A hand flew over your heart, and you felt your lips curve to a smile.
“That’s beautiful…I hope you do. If we’re careful…that could be your life, I know it.” you said.
He went back and got his wine glass, taking a careful sip. He kept it in his hand as he escorted you back to your room. Finishing your drink, and reflecting on Jonathan’s story, you fell right asleep.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Two days later, Loki brought you again to that wide training ground on the inside. He made no mention of the ceremony. In fact, there was a bounce in his step as you went with him into that room with just you two.
“Alright YN-let’s practice those other little gifts of yours! Starting with the sensing and tossing things around with your pretty little head!” he announced.
You rolled up your sleeves. He pointed at a red X that appeared on the floor with his magic.
“Stay put on this,” he required.
You stepped over it. He conjured a wooden pole and set it several feet before you on the ground.
“Now- move it without touching it,” he instructed.
You concentrated on the pole. Squinted hard. Your body clenched- but nothing happened. Move little pole, please, come on, move- just an inch, please, please please- you urged silently.
Loki raised up a finger and your glance moved up to meet him.
“Ah, I see. You’re trying to force it! Sometimes forcing it will result in nothing- just allow it happen. As you are- breathe into it!” he advised.
You relaxed your body and returned your focus to the pole. Not losing sight of it, but you released your hand to your sides. It began to twitch a little.
Move, you merely thought.
It rolled right to you like a blast of wind. You caught it with your foot, rolling it carefully. You felt yourself smile in triumph. Loki raised an eyebrow, and he smiled.
“Not bad- now turn around, Y/N,” he instructed.
You went around and to your shock, you saw Loki again staying right by a wall. A green door appeared on the wall that wasn’t there before. You turned your head to confirm  Loki there behind you- but another Loki in front of you! You didn’t hear him run, but you turned around. There were two of them?!?!
“You have a twin brother?” you asked nervously.
“Oh no- my magic can make duplicates,” he explained.
One could imagine the sorts of trouble he could get into with that trick! The duplicate Loki gestured to the door and you stepped towards it.
“Now- what do you sense is behind that door?” the duplicate asked,, his smooth, baritone ringing across the room.
You did sense something behind it. You could see its outline in your mind. It was tall, thin, and long in shape. It had a sharp point and a handle. Then a picture in your head emerged.
“It’s a…a…a sword,” you answered.
“That is right. The door is locked. Unlock and open it. Then get the sword,” he challenged you.
You concentrated on the doorknob. Relaxing your body and looking at nothing else. It fidgeted. It shook. But it didn’t open. You tried again, but it failed again. Letting out a huff of frustration, you then looked at the keyhole- sensing how it was kept locked. How the gears were turned to seal it.
“Now- unlock,” you requested.
The little gears turned and there was a click. Then the door squeaked open. It revealed a dark room with no furniture or decorations. The light from the training room poured out to it- revealing the sword right on the floor before you.
“Now wield the sword near you without touching it!” you heard the duplicate instruct.
You concentrated, poking at it with your mind. Bringing it to move. Yet it did not. It stayed there. Dull and solid. When you really willed, it budged forward. Then it stayed put.
“Dammit!” you cursed beneath your breath. “Just move to me!”
The light from the windows shining through stopped as if someone drew a curtain over them. Turning, you felt the frustration boiling in you as more grey clouds covered the sky. And out of nowhere for an idyllic, sunny day! The god looked up with an easy smile, laughter in his voice.
“Well, Y/N- you definitely did that! IT didn’t move the sword, but it did move the natural elements! Another effect you may thank me for!”
You felt yourself unclench, your shoulders lowering. The clouds rolled away quickly and there was sunshine again. You saw how if you focused on the light shining on the floor. Curiosity crept inside you. When you willed it, the light stretched towards your feet. Like the waves of the ocean when it would cradle and creep softly right before your toes.
“So your mother taught you?” you asked him.
The duplicate vanished into a bit of golden mist. You turned around to Loki and walked closer to him. He nodded his raven head.
“Yes, she did, since I was small. I remember she’d start with little tricks. Like…like this one here…”
He opened his hand and out came little fireworks. Bright flashes of red, pink, yellow, and blue flying up and exploding into beautiful sparkles from over his hand. You gasped, admiring the bright colors. It was so sweet, so delicate, so lovely. So unlike the portrait of the devious trickster god who called himself anything but a wanted hero.
“Loki, that’s beautiful!” you exclaimed, smiling in delight.
He gave you a smile back. You admired the show as it went on and then it faded away. He folded his palm.
“It’s all a matter of practice- and it will be like swimming to you soon,” he said.
“I just hope so. It will have to be if I’m to fight Grendel….” you sighed.
“You will- just give yourself time.”
“Do we have time?” was something you wanted to ask. But you did not. You merely focused again on the sword, trying to get it to slide to you. It did not.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
It was a nice rhythmic routine of your new life in Asgard- training so much in both body and magic. Even if it meant you were almost, always a little sore. Dining with these new people you had to call friends. Even Sif, despite her intense training sessions and sarcastic remarks every time she spoke. There was no report of any progress on Grendel. No news was good news, as the saying goes. It just left you more time to be prepared. It was hard to believe a month had passed by. In fact, you could hardly believe it when Thomas arrived one morning at breakfast.
“Forgive the intrusion, Miss Y/N, but I came to get your mail from home. Your parents begged me to send this over to you,” the baronet announced, handing you a letter. You opened it and read aloud.
“Dear Y/N,
We have not seen you in a long time. Please return home. Just for a little.
All our love,
Your mother and father.”
You folded it in your hands. It was Loki and his variants who sat a the table, all looking at you dumbfounded.
“Do you think you can visit back, my lady? I wonder if you still are sad concerning your betrothal,” Hal said.
“I don’t know if I can bear it alone….” you commented. The others looked at you and each other.
“I doubt I would be much welcome after that wedding fiasco,” Loki commented.
Jonathan stood up from his table.
“I will go with her. Y/N will not have to face it alone…” he volunteered.
You gave him a thanks as both of you beheld the portal to take you back. Trusting that you could alert Loki with your mind when you were ready to return. Just a bit of magic, the flash of rainbow colors bursting over you and the spy.
In a second, you both were right at the front door of your home. You knocked and were let in immediately. Sitting in the living room having an uneasy tea. They passed a plate of biscuits to Jonathan. He took a bite, keeping an uneasy smile on his face. A few crumbs fell on his pants which he wiped off. You felt your parents staring at the clothes from his time. Suppressing questions out of politeness. You only had one bite of your own biscuit, which tasted stale and bland. Looking over, you saw that the flowers in the vase on the table in the kitchen hadn’t changed since the would-be wedding. Shriveled, wilted, and dead.
“Now….Y/N, what is going on?” your mother asked.
“I am staying in Asgard. There is a great threat. A villain- he’s trying to invade. We are doing what we can to defeat him,” you explained plain and simple.
“When will you return home? Please, Y/N,” she begged.
“I don’t know, mama. Not for a while. This concerns all of our future, if not our safety. I…I wish I could…but I promised I would help them. And I will. I’m learning how to fight-”
“To fight!” cried your mother.
“Yes, and we have a clue on how to take care of it. Loki needs all the help he can get…”
Their frowns deepened at the sound of his name. Then your father leaned forward, his plate and tea untouched.
“Y/N- you are about to marry Reverend Ransome. We have to pick a new date already,” he said.
You set down your tea, feeling your hold on the saucer turn to a grip. Your breathing became sharp and your hands shook as the cup rumbled on the saucer. You set it down, but the shaking continued. Jonathan took out a hand of yours and held it in comfort.
“Mother, Father…I cannot be a vicar’s wife. Not anymore.”
Your mother blinked rapidly.
“But Y/N- you love him so much and you’ve loved him for years. You told us yourself.  And he loves you!”
Your father looked down on you. His voice deep and serious.
“I remember the day he asked permission to marry you. You should have seen him, Y/N. Heard his words then. I gave him my consent immediately. You should see how the reverend is now- hear how his sermons are lately. He’s eager for you to return. He misses you. He would run right here now if it wasn’t for his errands today!”
Yes, you forgot to ask him what errands he is doing. The bastard is probably pleasuring Cora against a tree again by now. Why hasn’t the bastard asked her to marry him yet and put us all out of our misery? I delivered that letter- plain and simple. He couldn’t miss it in his own stupid church. He must have read what it said… you thought bitterly.
Your senses reached out to the woods. It confirmed what you thought happened in the past. You could sense the bodies. His fingers reached up. Then out. Could sense it when he brought it to his mouth and licked off the inside of Cora.
‘Cora, Cora- how perfect for her name. The first bit rhymes with ‘whore’ and begins with the same letter as ‘cunt,’’ your thoughts bit back impulsively. You swallowed the thought back.
But you looked down into your cup on the tea tray. Fighting the urge to cry, your breathing even faster.
“I have…ended things with him,” you explained.
Your parents nearly jumped out of their seats.
“Ended things! Y/N- consider your future! A stable life with such a good, moral man who loves you! Why?!”
You gripped the arms of the couch with your free hand, Jonathan held you back from standing up. You saw his lips move, to contain getting involved. Only to support you. You felt your heart pick up and your throat tighten. You decided to make the explanation quick and simple.
“Will slept with Mrs. Seaborne while betrothed to me. That was why”
Your father squinted his eyes, his nostrils flaring.
“Y/N- Sarah gave her handmaiden to Jacob. It’s not noble for a wife to be upset when this happens. Your duty is to forgive him and make him happy,” he said.
You glared at your father. Jonathan’s hand broke off from you as you stood up, raising your voice and meeting them where you stood.
“Papa, Will had and consummated an affair. He kissed, wooed, and made love to another woman while engaged to marry me. He has broken my trust and crossed a line. It’s in the very Bible he studies and preaches not to do this- and he did anyway. Even as I was sick and dying, he preferred satiating his lust than comforting me. Is that who you want as your son-in-law? Or your rector? Don’t tell me he won’t do it after we’re married. I don’t trust him to. He has crossed a line once- and once is enough! I will not and cannot marry a man like that! And don’t tell me it’s my duty to let it go and be some perfect vicar’s wife! I will not make myself pure when he cannot be pure himself! I will not make myself into a perfect, pristine doll all for him to throw away for another!”
There was silence. Only the ticking of the grandfather clock. Your mother put a hand to her mouth.
“Y/N…do you realize the scandal even the rumor of this would cause?” she asked hoarsely.
You had no time to respond, the door burst open. In were none other than Mr. and Mrs. Harris, and a neighbor, Mr. Brown. Everyone shot up out of their seats, even Jonathan.
“Please! Mr. Y/L/N! Where is she?” Mrs. Harris asked, her eyes full of tears.
“Who?” asked your father.
Their eyes turned to you. Mr. Brown’s face turned red as if he was about to explode onto you.
“Miss Harris has vanished. We fear the worst- a kidnapping. This is no doubt your daughter’s fault!” he said.
He pointed a finger at you. His voice was heavy with venom.
“The Trickster’s God’s Whore,” he spat.
You felt sick again.
“Stella’s gone missing. Where does he have her- where does Loki have Stella?!” Mrs. Harris pleaded, her lips quivering as tears twisted her face and fell down her cheeks.
“Another one to spoil her virtue to pleasure him?! The Trickster God has one- Why isn’t one enough?” Mr. Brown sneered.
“Please everyone- she is not in Asgard,” Jonathan reasoned, putting his hands out to calm everyone down.
“What! Stella! Missing!” you urged. You went to her parents.
Mrs. Harris burst into heartrending sobs and her husband half embraced you. His blue eyes, just like his daughters, still looked at you with careful suspicion, but not outright hate as his neighbor.
“Gone since this morning. We were out visiting, taking care of business. Her brothers were off at work. Her little sister was with a friend. Stella was left home alone. She told us she intended to stay today- letters to write. Our neighbors said they heard her screaming. When they rushed in, the house and her room were a mess…and she was gone.”
“Please, Y/N,  she must be with you. Talking of the place you are when we asked her, this Asgard! Every time since you visited! The Trickster god must have enchanted her!” Mrs. Harris fretted.
“Why would Loki do that?” you blurted. “No! I swear to you- as someone who friend of your family-Jonathan is right! Stella isn’t in Asgard! If she was, I would know!”
The mother began to wring her hands. Then she brought out a scrap of paper from the pocket of her dress.
“But she…she must be enchanted…and abducted…why else would she leave a  scrap of paper behind with nonsense on it!” Mrs. Harris wailed.
“Nonsense? What nonsense? What’s on the paper?” you asked.
She handed you the scarp of paper. It was big and lined, written in a hurry. As if she was grabbed while writing it. But it was Stella’s handwriting. You exchanged too many letters to know it was her hand.
There was only one word on it. But one word was enough.
It read:
“GRENDEL.”

RULES;
✩ I will write character x reader, character x character and character x original character
✩ I especially love au's and I'm up for pretty much anything weird that gives me the ability to go wild and creative, so even if you think your idea might be a little out there, don't be nervous about sending it in
✩ don’t request smut for underage characters, also don't request fics for real life people, I will only write about characters
✩ I usually write from a female reader perspective but will write a gender neutral or male reader if requested
✩ I’m willing to write about characters that aren’t on the list below if I like the request and feel like I know the character well enough
✩ please try to be at least a little bit descriptive, and by that I mean literally everything that's more than just "enzo smut"
✩ unfortunately it can take me a while to get to your requests, but I'll do my best at getting them done as quickly as possible. but if I don't have any ideas for your request at all I might not write it. I'm trying to keep writing a fun thing, so I'm not going to force myself to write something I don't vibe with
✩ if you're unsure about your request and don't want to send it in as an ask because you might want to discuss it first, my dm's are always open for you!

In Every Life - Part 1
Summary: Two souls destined for each other, but life has other plans. Will they find each other and have their happy ending?
It was late September of 1883 when they met.  Some would call it kismet.  Others destiny.  The miserable ones would call it coincidence. He needed to go into London for a few weeks to work on some business prospects and handle some estate matters with his lawyer.  Lucille stayed back as she did not care to leave home but was not happy to be without her brother for so long.
Josephine and her mother were on their way to the hospital when she had a sudden dizzy spell, causing her to fall to the street but found herself saved by a beautiful stranger, rescuing her from being hit by a carriage riding too close to the sidewalk.
"Are you alright?" her mother inquired.
"I'm alright mother, thanks to this kind gentleman." She was shy and blushing, unbelieving that she made a fool of herself in front of this handsome man.
Her mother looked at him, thanking him profusely. "You may have saved her life, mister…."
"Sharpe, Thomas Sharpe, baronet, madame."
"Thank you so very much, Lord Sharpe. I am Victoria Morrow, and this is my daughter, Josephine. How can I ever repay you?"
His words failed him as he locked eyes with Josephine. In that moment, he felt as if there was something linking his heart to hers.  His heart, nay his soul, screamed to not let this beguiling creature to depart from him.
Unbeknownst to him, Josephine was similarly affected.
He responded to her mother without looking away from Josephine.  "There is no need, madame. I am more than happy to assist."  Josephine smiled at him causing his heart to skip with joy.  "If it is not too forward, might you be available for dinner this evening Ms. Josephine?" He held his breath, praying she would accept his offer.
The way her name rolled off his tongue could soothe an angry lion, and she would do anything to hear him say it again.  Looking at her mother for approval before answering, she said, "I would love that." They let him know where they were staying, advising he would pick her up at 7 pm.
***********************************************************************
That evening, he arrived promptly on time, having arranged a carriage to drive them to a nice restaurant he knew nearby. His breath escaped him as she descended the stairs, thinking her to be an angel descended from the heavens in a beautiful dark blue dress.  “You look breathtaking.”
Josephine found her heart beating so loud thinking he must be able to hear it.  Blushing, she reminded herself to breathe before taking his arm.  “Thank you Lord Sharpe.”
“Thomas, please.”  He wanted nothing more than to run away with her to some far off place or at least back to his home.
She nodded.  “Thomas.  You look very dapper yourself.”
She scolded herself.  ‘Dapper?  That’s the best you can come up with?’
“Shall we?”  He held out his arm which she took.  He aimed towards the door, and she followed him, a willing captive.  When entering the carriage, it took all his strength to tell the driver to take them to the restaurant rather than what his head and heart were telling him.
At dinner, they exchanged stories. He told her the joke about why his estate is called Crimson Peak.
"That sounds extraordinary."
"It is fascinating but sometimes also a bit macabre when someone walks around and leaves what looks like bloody footprints."
"That must be a sight to behold. Oh how I wish I could see that." She froze. She had not meant to be so bold and admit that last part, but he simply smiled and said, "I would love for you to see it. You are most welcome to come observe the sight any time you wish."
She felt a bit relieved. They continued to talk and walked leisurely back to her hotel as they did not want the night to end.
"I would very much like to see you again tomorrow, if that is alright?"  He didn't want to let her go, yearning to whisk her back to Allerdale as his.
"I would like that as well. My mother and I have an appointment, but we should be back by 1."
"1 o'clock it is. I look forward to it." He smiled, taking her hand in his and placed a kiss across her knuckles before departing.
Arriving at her room, she found her mother was pulling out the metallic syringe and an opaque bottle of liquid. "Did you have fun?"
She smiled and nodded. "He's wonderful and incredibly kind. He has asked to see me again tomorrow when we get back.”
"I see no problem with that at all, my dearest daughter, but it’s time for your medicine."
Josephine was not a fan of needles, but her mother insisted it would help with her deteriorating health.
***********************************************************************
When she awoke the next day, the front desk brought flowers that had been delivered early that morning.
My Dearest Josephine,
These flowers pale in comparison to your beauty. I very much look forward to seeing you again today.
Sir Thomas Sharpe
She placed them by her bedside, smiling like a loon. Her left hand began to shake and held it with her right to help control the tremors.
The visit at the hospital took longer than anticipated as they wanted to run a few tests to get a diagnosis as they felt they were close. By the time they arrived back at their hotel, it was half past 1.
Thomas waited patiently in the lobby. He had not been to the hospital much but knew appointments of any nature could run longer than expected.  When she arrived flustered, he tried to give an air of calm and understanding.
"I'm so sorry."
"It's quite alright. No need to explain. If you need to take a moment to freshen up, I am happy to wait."
Josephine appreciated his offer and went up to her room to fix herself quickly and was back down ten minutes later. She was sure to wear a dress with a larger skirt to help hide the tremors in her legs that were becoming more frequent.
He took her to a shop that prepared a picnic basket for them which they took to a nearby park. He laid everything out on the blanket, and they spent the afternoon enjoying each other's company, talking about various things such as nature, science, hopes, dreams.  Before they knew it, evening fell upon them, the picnic food gone hours before.
"Would you like me to escort you back to your hotel?"
She felt a pang of disappointment, not wanting to leave just yet. As if he could read her mind, "or, perhaps, we could get some dinner?"
Thomas wasn't ready to take her back but feared she might be tired of him. He hoped she might accept his second offer, his heart almost refusing to beat.
"Dinner sounds delightful."
Internally, he breathed a sigh of relief, his heart relieved.  As she went to stand up, the tremors began again, causing her to lose her footing; however, Thomas caught her before she fell to the ground.  She tried to brush it off.  “I’m so sorry.  My legs must have fallen asleep.”  She smiled.  “Not to worry.  I’ll help you to the restaurant.  It’s nearby.”  She took his arm, using it to steady herself, trying her best to ignore the looming headache.
They continued to enjoy one another's company through dinner and dessert, not realizing the late hour while looking at the stars in the park until they arrived back at her hotel to her frantic mother who calmed the moment she saw her daughter was with Sir Thomas.
"Thank you so much for escorting my daughter. It appears she had a lovely time." This caused Josephine to blush profusely.
"My apologies for keeping her so late. I do so much enjoy spending time with her."  He couldn't help but shyly smile as he spoke.   “If your mother permits, I would love to see you again.”
“That would be lovely,” she said, trying to hide the pain from her headache that seemed to only be getting worse.
“Would tomorrow be too soon?”  He was hopeful she’d agree.  It was too soon, but if he could, he would see her every day; however, he did not want to scare her, unsure if she felt the same.  Little did he know, she did.  As much as she loved her mother, she wanted adventures with him.  She’d run off with him at that very moment if she weren’t worried about leaving her mother alone.  Maybe he’d allow her to come with them?  Or would he disappear when learning of her declining health? ‘No, Josephine.  You mustn’t let your heart get ahead of your mind.  Perhaps he merely wants company while he is in town.’
Taking her hand, he turned it, kissing her palm and felt her hand shaking a bit but brushed it off, believing she was likely as nervous as he.
Arriving back to her room, her mother was ready to give the next dose of medicine.  “Do we have to, mother?  How many more of these treatments must I endure?”
Her mother approached with caution.  “It is only for your benefit.  Do you not wish to be well?”
She sighed in defeat.  “Yes, mother.  It’s just that the treatments have become more difficult to handle.  I just want to be well and hope the doctors here can find a solution.”
“I am sure they will, but in the meantime, you need to continue this course of treatment.  The doctors have not been opposed to it, and I feel it has slowed down at the least.  I am truly sorry for how difficult this has been for you, but it’s not any easier watching you be forced to endure.  You are a strong, capable woman.  As your mother, I only want to see you succeed.”
Josephine relented and allowed her mother to administer the needle treatment.
“I must also say this.  Sir Thomas seems like a capable young man, but I am not sure he is right for you.  I fear he may take advantage of you due to your health.  I do not believe I can abide his visits much longer.  I want to see you happy, but I also want you to be safe.”  She put the needle away with the future treatments, placing them in the drawer of her nightstand.
She rubbed her arm at the injection site, momentarily forgetting her headache.  “I know, mother, but there is just something about him that I cannot explain.  I feel connected to him on a spiritual level, and if he were to propose tomorrow, I would say yes, but….”
Sitting on her bed, her mother looked nervous.  “But what, Josephine?”
“But I fear leaving you alone.  Father passed so long ago, and I do not want you to feel as if I am attempting to abandon you, but I feel I must follow my heart.  I am hoping, perhaps, that if he does propose, that you may come to live with us.  I know.  I’m getting ahead of myself.  Just wishful thinking.”
Her mother moved over next to her, holding her from the side.  “Darling daughter.  I am in awe of your desire to see me happy, and I feel the same for you.  I just………..want you to be safe.  The thought of you running off with that man scares me.  There is just something about his countenance I cannot trust.  I mean, what do we really know about him?”
She knew her mother was right.  She was always right, but something in the back of her mind said her mother was wrong about this.
***********************************************************************
As he walked back to his hotel, he could not stop thinking about the feel of her hand, the honeysuckle smell drifting off her hair.  He knew what needed to be done.  Once back in his room, he pulled out a pen and parchment.
My Dearest Sister,
Please forgive my neglect of you. I have been so thoroughly occupied of late, and have so very much to tell you. Foremost, that I send you my love and sincerest well wishes for you in my absence.  All is well here, I have been meeting with Mr. Westridge regarding the estate. He has been kind enough to assist in clarifying the terms of the paperwork so we have nearly concluded our business; however, I must confess that, while I do miss you, I am not eager to return home just yet.
I have had the absolute pleasure of meeting a most outstanding lady.  Her name is Josephine.  She is here in town with her mother.  With her mother’s permission, I escorted her to dinner.  She is such a remarkable woman.  She gazes fondly at the stars as if they were her dearest friends.   I showed her the constellations of Perseus and Andromeda, telling her their tale.  Dear sister, I would slay every beast in the world just to stand in her presence.
She adores reading the poets and makes spirited defenses and criticisms of every page she consumes.  She listens tirelessly to my myriad mechanical ramblings and discusses my ideas with a curious and open mind. Never has a woman taken such an intellectual interest in my work. I must admit that while her face caught my attention, it was her mind that has kept my interest.
Oh, how I wish you were here to help guide me through this.  The very sight of her makes my heart flutter.   This strange feeling is beyond my comprehension, yet I do not wish for it to dissipate.  What must I do, dear sister?  Please, I beg for your guidance in this matter.
Your loving brother,
Thomas
Sealing the letter, he called upon the front desk to have the letter delivered to his sister, eager for a response as he was eager for his sister’s council.  They ensured him that short of unexpected, disastrous weather, they would have the letter delivered post haste.

While a cold cloth to her forehead helped alleviate her headache, Josephine suffered another night of unrest.  Rather than toss and turn, she quietly took out her diary to write, always addressing her entries to her father as it helped her feel close to him even though she never had the opportunity to meet him as he passed shortly after she was born.
Dear Father,
I must tell you of the noble gentleman who came to my rescue yesterday.  His name is Sir Thomas Sharpe.  I felt faint and began to stumble, but he saved me before I could be injured.  Dearest father, he is an angel, both in action and countenance.  When our eyes met, I knew in that instant he was my soulmate.
I know you never truly believed in soulmates and love at first sight, but I felt whole for the first time in my life.  I thought for so long that the missing piece of my soul occurred when you passed.  I realize now that the missing piece was him.  The cracks running deep to my core now feel as if they are mending each time we meet.
Father, I know you would approve of him.  We share similar interests.  He loves to read, star gaze, dance, and invent.  Yes!  He’s an inventor!  His mind creates these extraordinary ideas for machines.  His latest idea is for one that would make the harvesting of clay easier and more efficient with less likelihood for injury to the workers.  I find myself completely fascinated when he spoke of it
My first hesitation is mother.  I do not wish for her to feel abandoned.  She seemed amenable to come with me to Thomas’ estate, should he propose.  I have only known him for two days, but I would marry him at this very moment should he ask.  I do not care if he has money or not.  If he does not have an estate then the ground where we lay would become our home and the stars our blanket.
My second hesitation is my health.  I have not yet told him of my ailments and am afraid to do so.  My fears tell me he will reject me, not wanting an ill spouse, but my soul tells me he will not care.
I know not else how to describe this feeling, but I cannot deny it.  Mother reminds me that a lady does not openly express her feelings to a gentleman.  I wish you could meet him, see him as I do, but I know you watch over me.
I also fear that I have created this imaginary scene in my mind, that my heart has overruled my mind to the point where I live in fantasy.
I beg of you for your help, courage, and wisdom to know what to do.  I miss you so much.
Your loving daughter,
Josephine
Putting her journal away, she climbed back into bed.  It was another hour before she was finally able to sleep.

The following morning, Thomas readied himself, going by the florist first.  Looking for the perfect flowers, he looked for ones that might be worthy of her presence.  Once he found them, he paid the proprietor and left swiftly to her hotel and waited for her patiently in the lobby.
Josephine was lost in a fitful slumber, but her mother was awake and ready, knowing Sir Thomas would be arriving shortly.  Descending the stairs, she saw him holding the most beautiful flowers she had ever seen.
Tumblr media
“Good morning Ms. Morrow!  How are you this fine morning?”  The joy in his face was evident to any who saw him.
“Good morning, Lord Sharpe!  I am well, but I’m afraid Josephine is still resting.  Her rest was very troubling last night, which is to be expected.”
“I am so sorry to hear that, but I do hope she is well.  Do you know when she might awaken?”  He was very eager to see her.
“I could not say, but I do not wish to disturb her as her health has been poor, especially as of late.  I will ensure she receives these.”
When she put her hands forward, he hesitated.  “I would be happy to wait until she is awake as I would live to give these to her myself.  I must confess.  I am eager to see her again.”  He wanted to see her so much, even if for a moment.
“I cannot say when she may awaken and feel well enough for a visitor, but I assure you I will take these directly upstairs.”  Reluctantly, he handed her the bouquet.
“I thank you for doing so.  If there is anything I might do to aid in her recovery, please do let me know.  I am very……..fond of her.”  He could not help but blush.
“You are too kind, Lord Sharpe.  We are fond of you as well.”  He smiled at her response.
“Please do not hesitate to call upon me should there be anything I can do to assist in her recovery.”
He waited until Ms. Morrow disappeared up the stairs and out of view before taking his leave.
As her mother returned, she found her daughter to be awake and brushing her hair.  Turning at the sound of the door, she saw the flowers her mother held.  “Those are the loveliest flowers I have ever seen!  Where did you find them?”
Her mother walked over to the vase in their room, discarding the old flowers and placing the new ones in there with some water.  “A handsome gentleman gave them to me.  They are pleasing, are they not?”
“They truly are, and you deserve them.  You have been so kind and helpful with my health.  It’s the least you deserve.  I do hope he calls upon you again.”  Josephine turned around and continued to brush her hair.  She was feeling exceptionally unwell this morning but did not want to alarm her mother, keeping her thoughts to herself.
As her mother went to place the flowers in a vase with some water, she removed the ribbon from the stems, placing it aside as a keepsake.  “I communicated your increasingly poor health to the hospital.  They recommended bed rest and valerian tea until your next appointment in 3 days.”
Disappointed, she returned to her bed, already plotting her escape.  She could not stand to be cooped up, preferring the fresh air and sunshine, or the stars at night.  In the meantime, she placed her head on the pillow, knowing she could use some more rest.

That was two days ago.  Thomas paced back and forth around his rooms wondering what to do, how he could capture even a glimpse of her.  Perhaps he could return back to her hotel in the evening with more flowers?  Or would more flowers be too much?  Maybe a new pair of gloves?
Then it occurred to him.  He knew exactly what she would like, departing for the desired object he had seen just the other day.  When he exited his hotel, he looked around to realize it was later than he thought, not having realized he had been pacing around his room for hours.
Holding himself back from running, he reminded himself of social protocol, trying to keep an acceptable pace as there was no emergency.  Upon arriving at his desired location, he spoke with the shopkeeper, describing the item he was looking for.  The shopkeeper knew exactly what he was describing.  “Would you like me to wrap it for you sir?”
Thomas smiled.  “I would be most grateful.  I am very grateful for your help.”  Pausing for a moment, he had another idea.  “Might you have a piece of parchment and ink I might use?”
The shopkeeper smiled and retrieved the requested items.  “This must be for someone very special.”  Thomas smiled back at him.  “Yes, for someone very dear and precious.”  It took him a few moments, but the words finally came to him.
My Dearest Josephine,
Words fail me to accurately portray the bewildering spell you have cast upon me with your beauty and intellect.  I hope this may help convey what I am unable to express.  For I am unable to retain a singular thought when simply near you.  I yearn to see you.  To simply breathe the same air as you is a privilege that not even God himself is worthy.
I pray you can accept this humble token from an unworthy man such as myself.
Yours Always,
Thomas
Gently folding the note, he placed it inside before the shopkeeper who then safely wrapped the item, securing it with twine.  Holding it carefully, he departed.
As he neared her hotel, he noticed a woman become unsteady, falling to the ground and hurriedly made his way to assist her.
“Madam, are you alrigh………Josephine?”  Her face was contorted in pain.  “What is wrong?  What can I do?”  She could hear his voice off in the distance; however, she was more focused on her prevailing issue as her extremities continued to tremble. Lifting her bridal style, he started towards the hospital.
She turned to look at him.  “Thomas?”  She sounded weak.  “Dear Josephine!  Do not worry.  I will get you to the hospital posthaste.”
She placed a hand on one of his lapels.  “Please no, not the hospital.”
“But you are unwell.  You must see a doctor!  If nothing else, I should take you back to your hotel to rest.  You cannot be out here in your state.”
“I beg you. Please do not take me back, at least not yet.  Can we delay a little?  Perhaps sit on a bench at the park?  I yearn for fresh air and sunshine.”
He could not deny her request, heading for the park nearby as she leaned her head on his shoulder.  Gently placing her on the bench, he sat next to her.  She held onto his arm.  To provide her better support, he wrapped an arm around her, finding her leaning into him.  They stayed like that for sometime, receiving odd looks from passersby.  Finally, Thomas broke their peaceful quiet.
“Darling Josephine.  If I might implore, what is ailing you?”
This was it.  She was about to be confronted with her fear of his rejection of her due to her health.  “I’m afraid, Thomas.” she turned her face up to look at him.
“What are you afraid of, my dear?”
there was nothing she could do to hide or deny it any longer.  “I have been unwell for sometime.  Mother thought it best to come to London to see if the doctors might know what is affecting my health.  No one has been able to uncover the cause.  They’re only able to treat the symptoms.”
Thomas listened attentively as she looked away and continued.
“The doctors here have hope for a diagnosis and solution.  In the meantime, mother has been administering medicine to help me, but I fear it might not be working well enough.”
“Why have you not told me of this before?”  His worry increased, not wanting her to suffer.
“I’m afraid you might not want to see me anymore.  No one wants to be saddled with an ill person.”
Placing his finger under her chin, he guided her face back towards his.  “My dearest darling Josephine.  Nothing could change how I feel about you.”
She blushed and attempted to bury her face in his chest, but he would not allow her to do so.  “If God himself told me I had to choose between you and the heavens, I would dwell happy as a dead man in hellfire for having known you.”
She could not help a tear or two from falling.  “Please, Thomas, do not take pity on me.  I could not bear it.”
Using the back of his finger, he wiped them away.  “Please do not cry.  I am not worthy of your tears.”
He brushed some falling hair out of her face, and she leaned her face into his palm as he did so, yearning to stay close to him.  A gust of cold wind fell upon them, and she began to shiver.  Against society propriety, he removed his coat and placed it around her to help keep her warm.  She confided in him her desire to be a dancer.  “I’ve always wanted to dance, but my health never allowed it.”
“One day, you will dance.  We will dance, even if I have to sweep you off your feet and hold you while I carry you around the dance floor.  Come, love.  We must get you back to your hotel for some rest.”  She agreed but found she was still unable to walk.  The tremors were affecting her more and more as time moved on.  Seeing her distress, he picked her up bridal style once again and moved towards her hotel.  As he carried her, she found herself warming between his coat and their close proximity, allowing his calming scent to envelop her.
They arrived at her hotel moments later, finding her mother running frantically down the stairs.  “Where have you been?  Are you alright?”
Josephine nodded, looking up at Thomas.  “I needed some air and fell, but Thomas rescued me.”
“We need to get you back to bed.”  Thomas began towards the stairs but was stopped by her mother.  “It is not appropriate for you to be in her room.  I can help her back to our rooms.”
He looked back at Josephine, not wanting to leave her in such a state, but Josephine knew once again that her mother was right.  He placed her down gently, her mother moving to help support her.
“Thank you again for rescuing me, Thomas.”  She gave him a weak smile, her energy still draining and began to remove and return his coat, but he stopped her.
“No, my dear Josephine.  Please use it to keep yourself warm.  I can come back and retrieve it tomorrow or the day after when you are feeling better.”
He leaned forward to wrap his coat back around her, using the moment to whisper so that only she could hear.  “There is something in the pocket for you.”
She looked at him and smiled once more.  “Thank you again, Sir Thomas.  You have been most kind.”
He stayed and observed to help ensure her and her mother had no problems ascending the stairs, not leaving until well after they were out of sight.
Arriving back at his hotel, he found there was a letter and small package awaiting him.  Seeing his sister’s hand writing, he swiftly took the items to his room, eager to read her response.
Darling Brother,
I am beyond delighted to receive your letter.  What you describe in your letter is nothing short of love.  I have been worried for so long to find someone worthy of your time and attention, to be a partner, a friend, and a confidante.
She sounds to be the most exquisite creature.  It warms my heart with how you talk of her.  I have never heard you speak of anyone in such a manner, not even your childhood love, Angelica.
From what you’ve told me of her, it appears she feels the same as you.  The only guidance I can give you is this.  Your heart already knows what to do and will not lead you astray.  All you need now is to listen to it.
I have enclosed mother’s ring.  While it is ghastly, use it to purchase a ring for my future sister.  Go, dear brother, and ask her to be your Andromeda.
Your loving sister,
Lucille
He knew she was right, always providing the truest insight and finest guidance.  In all the times he thought he was falling in love, none compared to his affection for Josephine.
Opening the small package, he found their mother’s ring encased in an intricately carved jewelry box.  While the box was beautiful, he agreed with his sister that the ring was frightful.  Gazing at the ring, he pondered where to go.  Placing the ring on the desk, he decided to begin his search for the perfect ring the next day.  All night, his mind stirred with ideas of how to ask his dear Josephine to be his Andromeda once a worthy ring was found..

Back at her hotel, Josephine placed Thomas’ coat over the back of her chair and bided her time to check the inner pocket until her mother had fallen asleep.  As she climbed into bed, her mother brought her nightly remedy.  Not wanting to anger her mother, she gripped the bedsheet tightly as the needle was administered in her other arm.
As the needle and bottle were put away, Josephine noticed the flowers again by her mother’s bedside.  Whomever sent those must truly be enamored, and it delighted her heart, giving her hope that her mother would finally find someone.
She gently turned over to see her mother gazing at the flowers once more.  “Mother?  I am so sorry to have worried you like that.  It was not my intention to cause any harm.”
Looking back to her daughter, the smile on her face dropped as she prepared the valerian tea.  “You know, daughter.  I only wish the best for you.  The instructions from the doctors are only for your betterment.”
Although crestfallen, she knew her mother was right, as always.  “I’m just so tired of doctors and hospitals.”
“I know you are, my daughter.  I wish I could make it all go away, but they are necessary.  The physicians here seem to have better ideas on how to help you, and we must let them do it.”
She knew there was nothing else to say.  Taking the tea from her mother, she drank it without complaint, falling asleep soon after.

Waking up to the sound of song birds, Thomas yearned to see his beloved.  Taking the time to bathe and dress, he decided to surprise her at her hotel and take her to breakfast. Taking the ring, he placed it in his breast pocket.
Swiftly arriving at her hotel, he inquired with the desk clerk if she was awake.  Having one of the staff check, it was only moments before Ms. Morrow arrived downstairs.
“Sir Thomas!  How delightful to see you this morning.”
“Ms. Morrow, it is a pleasure to see you.  I was hoping to take your daughter to breakfast?  If it’s already with you, that is.”
“I’m so sorry, Sir Thomas.  She is still slumbering and will not be awake for a while, but I would be delighted to join you.  This would be an opportune time to get to know one another.  I feel that we may be spending more time together in the near future.”
He smiled, trying to hide his disappointment in not seeing his darling.  “That would be most wonderful, Ms. Morrow, and a most excellent idea.”
Taking his arm, she led him out of the hotel.  “Please, call me Victoria.  I insist.”  They arrived at a restaurant just minutes later, being seated without hesitation.  They discussed hobbies and interests.  He asked questions about Josephine’s upbringing, wanting to know her better.
“To be honest, she was never a well child.  Her father passed when she was an infant, and I took the burden of being mother, father, and nursemaid.”  She proceeded to tell him how her daughter’s health has been poor since she was little and has steadily declined over the years.  “I’ve had to play nursemaid by myself.”
They chatted away a while longer before Thomas escorted her back to her hotel, taking his leave in search of a prize.
Going from store to store, he felt more and more despondent.  The staff at each store tried to be helpful, but nothing was good enough for his dear Josephine.  Before returning to his rooms for the evening, he tried one last store: Hatton Garden.  The gentleman behind the counter introduced himself as Harold.  Harold was not much to look at, a short balding man in his fifties, but he had an immense talent for helping people find the perfect piece.  He showed him his mother’s ring, hoping he could sell it to purchase a ring fit for a goddess.
“Tell me about your fair lady.”  This was his trick, to use how the person felt about their beloved and match it to a ring.
“She is the most beautiful creature I have ever beheld.  Her eyes are blue like the ocean and sparkle like the finest stars in the sky.  She loves poetry and astronomy.  She is like no other I have ever met before.  I want to find something unique and individual that will compliment her beauty and show that she is nothing short of a queen among peasants.”
Harold smiled.  Never before had he heard such an elegant description of a fine young lady, and he knew exactly the ring for her.  Retrieving it, he placed it delicately on the counter.
Tumblr media
This was the ring.  THE ring he had been searching for.  The smile on his face told Harold he had chosen wisely.
“May I see the one you brought in?”  Thomas placed his mother’s old ring on the counter.  “Unfortunately this is all I have, but I cannot give her a ring that does not befit her beauty.”  Harold picked it up to inspect it.  Taking out his jeweler eyepiece, he looked closely at the stone and inspected the silver holding the gem.
“I hope you do not find me impertinent, but this setting does not do justice for such a fine ruby stone.”  He looked at it further before placing it back on the counter.
“Not at all.  To be honest, I find the ring itself ghastly, but I know it must be worth something.”
While the setting itself was considered junk these days (it was made mostly of cheap aluminum), the stone was worth something; however, the value fell short on the cost of Thomas’ chosen ring.  There was something about him he only rarely saw in others who came to him for help and came to a decision.  This young lady described sounded not only enchanting but also one of the only women worthy of a ring like this.  While the gentleman in front of him would not be able to pay the actual cost of the ring, he wanted to help him.
“I do believe we can come to an agreeable arrangement.”  Harold described the value of the stone in the ring brought to him.  While he could not use the current setting, he could have a new setting created that would be more appealing and appropriate for the stone.  “You came on a most auspicious day, my boy.  For today is the only day this particular ring is on a special sale.”  He told Thomas that with the sale price of the ring, it would match the amount he would pay for the ring Thomas brought in.  “In fact, I would be most glad to exchange the ring you brought to me for this one.  It is most fortunate you arrived this evening.”
Thomas was elated, finally having found the perfect ring for his (hopefully) future wife.  Harold included a ring box befitting such a ring.  To avoid theft, he placed the ring box in his breast pocket where the previous one resided.
“I cannot thank you enough, sir.  You have been a tremendous help!”  Harold gave him well wishes as he departed.
It was late in the day, perhaps too late to call upon his dear Josephine.  Regardless, he walked to her hotel, stopping in front and peering up to what he believed to be her window.  He had to stop himself from running inside, up the stairs, and to her room.  He didn’t care that her health was poor and would take any time God would grant him, be it years, months, days, or even minutes and would love and take care of her.
Before the constable could be called, Thomas went back to his own hotel and spent hours working on his proposal.
***********************************************************************
The following morning, he was ready.  Placing the ring box in his jacket pocket, Tom went to the florist first.  He wanted to have the perfect flowers to give her as he proposed.  The florist was kind and helped pick the right flowers that would show love and affection and created a one of a kind bouquet of peonies and roses.
Tumblr media
“Any girl who would turn you down after giving these flowers is not a girl worth having,” the florist told him.
“She’s worth much, much more than these, but I think she’ll find them adequate.”  His smile was big and bright, lighting up the shop.  It wasn’t hard to see how hard he had fallen for Josephine.  Anyone who looked at him knew he was a man in love.
Now armed with the beautiful bouquet, he made his way to her hotel.
Once arrived, he asked for her at the front desk.  “Might Miss Josephine Morrow be available?  I do not wish to disturb…….”
He stopped mid-sentence when he saw the grim look on the concierge’s face.  “Normally, I would not share such private information, but I have seen you and her together.  She’d want you to know.”
The smile on his face dropped, his heart racing with fear, the flowers dropping to the floor.  “Know what?”
The concierge took a moment to compose himself.  “It was very late last night, her mother came running, asking for help to get her daughter to the hospital.  I was able to find someone to take her to hospital, but when I saw her?  To say she looked poorly would not do it justice.”
Before the gentleman could finish, Thomas was out the door and running to the hospital.  He had to see her for himself.  If she was that ill, he wanted nothing more than to be by her side.  He’d never run so fast before, but it also seemed to take forever to get there.  The nurse at the desk confirmed she was there and took him to her room.  When he entered, she looked deathly pale.  Tremors were happening at random intervals, and it was obvious she was having breathing issues.
“Her mother stepped out a few minutes ago.  We urged her to get some rest.  You must have just missed her.”
“What is wrong with her?  Will she be alright?”  She had to be alright.  He refused any other outcome.
“Honestly, we don’t know.  We cannot figure out the source of her ailment.  If we had some idea, we might be able to do something, but I fear it may be too late.”
He was now sitting at her bedside, holding her hand.  “She told me her mother had been administering medicine.  Has that not helped?”
The nurse looked puzzled.  “What medicine?  The doctor has been very hesitant to prescribe her anything except to help her rest.  If we knew what she was being given…..”
He was out the door before she could finish, knowing he needed to find the medicine her mother was administering.  Why had her mother not told them?  Would it not benefit to give the doctors all of the information in order to help her daughter?
Arriving back at the hotel, he told the concierge to call the police as he ran up the stairs to her rooms.  Rather than knocking, he barged right in.  The room was unoccupied.  There were no thoughts as to where her mother might be, but he began searching every bag he could find.  As he neared the desk Josephine regularly used, her mother entered the room.  “I beg your pardon.  What do you think you’re doing here?  Why are you going through our personal things?”
“Where is it?” he demanded.
“Where is what?” She retorted.
“The medicine you’ve been administering to her?  ”  He continued to shuffle through papers.
“I have no idea what you are referring to, sir.  I demand you leave at once!”
He turned to look at her, fury evident in his eyes.  “Your daughter told me you’d been administering medication.  The hospital has no record of it.  Where is it?  What have you been giving her?”
Ms. Morrow was frozen in place, speechless.  Out of the corner of his eye, he spied the flowers he’d given Ms. Morrow to give her daughter on his behalf.  They were not on Josephine’s bedside table.  Rather, they were by Ms. Morrow’s.  Why were they there?
He moved swiftly to the flowers.  “Why are these here?  They were for Josephine!”  He started searching through the drawer of the nightstand, finding the items he was looking for.  He pulled out the needle and a bottle of silver liquid.  “What is this?  What in heaven’s name have you been giving her?”
“I’m her mother!  I take care of her.  You have no right to question me.  I demand you leave at once!”  They were both flustered.  Thomas examined the bottle of silver liquid, looking for any sign of a label.  It wasn’t until he turned it upside down that he found a partial label that said “....cury”.
“You’ve been injecting her with mercury?  Why would you do such a thing?”  Ms. Morrow launched herself at him, trying to get the bottle back.  He held it above her head to which she responded by slapping him several times.  Before she could get in the next blow, police blew in through the door.
He directed the police to arrest her.  “She’s been poisoning her daughter.  I must get this vial and the needles to the hospital before it’s too late.”  While two officers arrested Ms. Morrow, another officer gave him a ride to the hospital.  Thomas hoped it wasn’t too late.  He couldn’t bear to live without her.
Rushing to her room, he found the doctor there examining his Josephine.  “This is what her mother has been administering.”  He handed the bottle over to the doctor who examined it, and then sat by Josephine, holding her hand and kissed the back of it.
The doctor turned to his patient.  “Is this true, Ms. Josephine?”  She let out a breathy ‘yes’, unable to speak much more than that.  Even in the short time he’d been at her hotel, she continued to deteriorate.
It didn’t take the doctor more than a moment to recognize the contents: mercury.  Now having the missing piece of the puzzle, the doctor turned them.  “This explains your symptoms, but I’m afraid they’ve progressed too far.”
“What do you mean, too far?”  Thomas was angry.
“If we had known much sooner, the effects could be reversed, but at this point, there’s nothing we can do.  She’s not much longer for this world, I’m afraid.”
The tears poured out of him.  He gazed into his darling’s eyes.  “I’m so sorry, my love.  I’m so, so sorry.”
She gathered what strength she had left, placing her palm on his face.  “It is alright, darling.”
“How is it alright?”
“You’ve given me the greatest gift I’ve ever wanted.  You showed me what it is to love and be loved.”
He held her other hand with both of his, tears continuing to fall.  “We haven’t had enough time.  We need more time!”
“Do not worry, darling.  I will always be with you.”
At that moment, he remembered his original intention that morning, and pulled a small box out of his jacket pocket. She may not be long for this world, but he wanted every moment he could get.
“Dearest Josephine, I love you more than life itself.  I do not care if it is only for a few minutes or a few days.  Would you please do me the honor of being my wife?”  He opened the box to show her the ring.
She smiled and nodded.  “Yes,” she said with as much enthusiasm as she could gather.  He removed the ring from the box and placed it on her finger.  What he had not noticed when he purchased the ring was that the jeweler had placed a matching silver ring under the cushion, a ring for him; however, it fell out of the box, creating a clunking sound as it hit the floor.  He picked it up before turning to the doctor.  “Is there a parson here?  I wish to marry my fiance as swiftly as possible.”
The doctor sent the nurse to find the vicar who had been visiting other patients and brought him to Josephine’s bedside.  Thomas expressed his wishes, and Josephine confirmed.  Both her engagement ring and the groom’s ring were placed on the open bible held by the vicar.
While they did not have a license, the vicar did not care.  He quickly understood the situation and gave them a brief ceremony, marrying them in the eyes of God.  At this point, no one in the room cared about the legalities.  Within moments, they were married, the rings placed on their respective fingers.
From that moment on, they were not parted.  He refused to leave her side for anything, standing vigil day and night, wanting to spend every possible moment with her that she had left.  The only thing she asked of him was to hold her.  He and the nurse moved her carefully so that he could join her in bed.  Giving her a sweet kiss, he held her for the next few hours as she continued to deteriorate.
The doctor came to check on her that night.  When he came back the next morning, he let Thomas know that she did not have much longer.  He continued to hold her, forgetting all else.  In her last moments, she looked at him.  “Thomas….”
“Yes, my love?”
“I…..”  She had to regain her breath for a moment.  He waited patiently for her to continue.  “I will always love you.”
He dared to hold her closer.  “And I will always love you, in this life and the next.”
“And the next,” she repeated.  “I love you.”  And with those three words, she took her last breath.
The funeral was small but nice.  His sister did not have enough time to be there for her brother at the funeral, but she arrived that night in order to help him pack.  At his request, the concierge and staff helped to pack up her belongings so that Thomas may bring them back to Allerdale Hall.  While he could no longer bring his wife, he could have some part of her there with him.
As it got deep into winter, Lucille found him up in his attic more and more to the point where he refused to leave.  He had his favorite gown of Josephine’s on a mannequin in his workshop so she could watch him work.  He’d explain to the mannequin what he was doing and how he was doing it, as if she were truly there with him.  The most he would allow from Lucille was a blanket for warmth and the occasional tea.
He’d not been home for a month when he caught a cold.  Lucille tried to urge him to take the medicinal tea and treatments to help him recover, but he had lost his will to do anything.  Melancholia and grief had such a tight hold on him that he could think of nothing else but his wife and his desire to be with her again.
Lucille returned about 20 minutes later with the medicinal tea and the determination to force her brother to take it and get better.  Arriving in the attic, she found he had passed, holding on to Josephine’s dress.
Knowing what he would want, she had his body brought to London and had him buried next to his wife.  As there was no proper headstone for Josephine, Lucille had a double headstone fashioned for her brother and his wife, finding it the very least she could do for her dearest brother.

Seeing You Again (Chapter 3)
Pairing: Robert “Bob” Floyd x Reader, Childhood Friends
Word Count: 3.5K
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Read on AO3
Bob made good on his offer to meet up and in the way that old friends do, you picked up right where you left off from the last time you saw each other.
Aside from the ever present and sometimes unnerving attraction you felt towards him, you were still the same people you knew all those years ago. There was none of the ponderous push and pull that you experienced when trying to get to know new people in your late 20s. He was still the same Robbie with his sardonic sense of humor and his eclectic interests that he loved to share with you but now with a newfound, quiet confidence that came with age and experience. You hoped he felt the same and judging by his consistent and enthusiastic invitations to spend time together, it was safe to say he probably did.
When the weekends rolled around Bob suggested something new to do around San Diego, sometimes with your sister, sometimes with his friends, sometimes just the two of you. You invited him to a work social after which you had to explain a disconcertingly number of times to your co-workers that you and Bob were not in fact a couple. You even found yourself returning to The Hard Deck whenever one of Bob's friends were Stateside, which always proved to be a bit anxiety inducing for you, but Bob was there to ease you into the sometimes-gruff Navy banter that was unavoidable in such places. The teasing never really ceased but you felt their acceptance, nonetheless. From what you could tell, if you made Bob happy and he liked having you around, they were willing to make room for you in their tight social circle.
Before you knew it you had been in San Diego for nearly two months and didn't regret your decision to move for an instant, and Bob was a major reason. He was quickly reclaiming his place in your life as your best friend - a best friend that you found tormentingly and distractingly attractive...
"So, like, you bang yet?" Emily asked casually over burritos one night in Old Town.
You looked around, embarrassed, hoping the family of tourists eating next to you didn't hear your sister's crass words. "No. You ask that literally every day," you hissed. "We're just friends."
"Sure you are," she replied, taking a large sip of her margarita.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, I don't know," she sighed. "Maybe just the fact that when the two of you are around each other your sexual tension shows up on seismic meters."
You had to admit she wasn't exactly exaggerating. There had been a tension there, ever since you saw him from across the room at The Hard Deck, before he even knew you were on his side of the continent. It had only become more meddlesome as you continued to spend time together. You didn't miss how he went out of his way to touch you for even the smallest reason; a touch on the back as you weaved your way through a crowded bar, taking your hand and helping you over the rocks at La Jolla cove, the way he lightly knocked your heads together during fits of laughter, the goodbye hugs that lasted a little longer than they had the previous time you parted ways. Oh, there was something there, and you two weren't the only ones who noticed it.
"Or the fact that he has introduced you - a single person of the gender that he is attracted to - to various friends of his who come through North Island, all of which made unabashed sexual innuendo in your presence."
"They're men in the military. That's how they communicate," you pointed out. "Anyway, that's not all true. Phoenix was very polite."
"Who the hell is 'Phoenix'?"
"Sorry, Natasha. The female pilot we met at The Hard Deck."
"Fine. All of them - except the token female pilot - make sexual innuendo in your and his presence. Even then I can guarantee she gossiped about you both to the others as soon as you were out of earshot. Everyone sees the inevitable except you."
She was wrong about that - you saw it. As clear as day. You just didn't think it was the great idea that everyone else thought it was.
"Listen, he was and is a really good friend and we've known each other since we were kids-"
"And now you're full-fledged adults with hormones who very much want to bone," she pointed out. "Maybe just fuck and put this whole city and the entire US Navy out of its misery."
The family of tourists got up and moved to a table across the room.
"Prudes," Emily whispered.
"It's not that easy," you challenged.
"Why not?"
"This isn't some random Tinder date that I swiped on because he had a hot photo. Someone who I wouldn't care about seeing ever again if we only hook up and nothing else," you replied, not daring to let yourself imagine how you would feel if you hooked up with Bob only to have him ghost your texts a few days later. "I have really good memories of him when we were younger, and I don't want to taint them with feelings of rejection and anger if we become intimate and it all falls to shit in the end."
Emily softened a bit. "I don't think Robbie is the love 'em and leave 'em type."
"We don't know that for certain. People change."
"Y/N, he invited you to Comic Con," she reminded. "Which is 10 months away and which is, by the way, the nerdiest shit I've ever heard." She took a bite of her burrito. "You really are meant for each other," she said over a mouthful of barbacoa.
"Maybe he won't have a choice," you said quietly, addressing the elephant in the room and one of your biggest fears when it came to Bob.
"Ah, Uncle Sam and his demands," Emily replied knowingly.
"Robbie is already up in Lemoore several times a month," you sighed. "And once this teaching gig of his is done it's only a matter of time before one of those carriers moored out there requests his presence and suddenly, he's God knows where for months with little to no communication. What am I supposed to do then?"
"You wait," Emily deadpanned.
You threw her an exasperated look.
"What?" she shrugged. "You think you'd be the first person to have someone they care about sent off on deployment for months at a time?"
"No, of course not."
"Then what's the issue?"
"Let's not forget that it was extended separation that ended our friendship last time."
"You were a kid and didn't have much of a choice in the matter," she reminded you. "You're an adult now and can make you own decisions and move as you please." She stole the remainder of your tortilla chips. "Plus, now we have these things called smart phones, where we can text and video chat from wherever through the wonders of telecommunications. I think you'll find a way to manage."
You sighed again. It's not something you wanted to think about, but the reality of Bob's job meant that it was only a matter of when - not if - he gets sent off somewhere far away from San Diego. Would you drift apart again? Would it kill you a little if that happened only after you crossed the line from friends to lovers? You couldn't say and you were afraid to find out.
"Anyway, get on with it please," Emily requested. "We all know mom has already given up on me. I can only imagine how thrilled she'll be when she finds out her brilliant eldest is involved with Lt. Robbie Floyd; good Catholic boy with a stable, illustrious career," she groused, sucking salsa off her fingertips. "It disgusts me to even think about it."
Later that night you laid in bed and scrolled through the (very long) text stream between you and Bob on WhatsApp. It would be so easy to send a text: want to come over to my place this weekend?. You may or may not have written this message multiple times over the past few weeks, each time only to delete it while chastising your lizard brain for leading you down the path of no return. You hadn't even kissed yet and yet you were worrying about whether he might move away someday. You didn't really know how he felt about you, even if everyone else thought they knew. Just because he made up a story about you dating when you were 12 didn't mean he would fall over himself to be with you at 30. He has only been a friend so far. Just a friend.
Your phone vibrated in your hand and a new message appeared in your text stream. Hey! You have plans Friday night? Want to go to Ocean Beach Pier after dinner?
You could almost hear Emily's sarcastic response: ah yes, 'just friends' with no romantic feelings whatsoever always ask each other to walk on picturesque piers at sundown. Next, he'll be inviting you on a platonic gondola ride through Venice. She would also have some choice words for you if she knew about the giddy little jolt you got every time, he sent you a message. You weren't nearly this bad even when you were 12.
You responded that you had no plans and that'd you love to join him. You flopped back on the bed and stared at your ceiling fan. You wondered how long this stalemate could go on for and whether you were brave enough to bring it to an end.
---
"It couldn't have been eight times."
"We did," Bob assured you as you offered him a lick of your ice cream cone. "There would have been a ninth, but I think my parents cut off my movie ticket allowance that month."
You weaved your way around a gaggle of running children and some seagulls taking a chance at a fisherman's bait box. As usual for San Diego, the weather was idyllic with the late evening sun starting to disappear over the horizon. The company on the pier was even better.
"That movie is over three hours long. That means we spent," you paused doing the calculations for how much time you two spent in a theater watching The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2003, "26 hours watching that movie in a cinema. Over a day of our life."
You leaned against the pier's railing, feeling the last rays of western sun on your cheek and watched the beachgoers and fishers heading home for the day. You concentrated on not getting melted mint chocolate chip ice cream on your hand as you nibbled on your cone.
"Yes, but tell me that wasn't one of the best accumulated days of your life," Bob nudged you with his elbow.
You wanted to tell him that most days that they had spent together - both as children and now as adults - were among the best of your life, but you stopped yourself from being so transparent. "No arguments there," you assured him. "We should watch it again. What's another 3 and a half hours?"
"3 and a half hours?" Bob said with mock outrage. "No, if we're going to do this it's the full 4 and a half hour, director's cut, extended edition or nothing at all. What are we, a bunch of rookies?"
You burst out laughing at his enthusiasm. "That's going to take a lot of stamina," you warned. "Think we can handle it?"
"We started training when we were pre-teens," he leaned over and had another taste of your ice cream, "our whole lives have led to this moment."
You reached out to wipe a bit of melted ice cream off his cheek. "I always had a feeling you were secretly an adrenaline junky," you teased. "First to jump off the high board. Fighter jet aviator. Lord of the Rings extended edition watcher..."
He shrugged and softened as he considered your words. "Maybe a bit but not nearly as bad as most guys who do this. Flying, I mean, not The Lord of the Rings binging," he explained. "If I'm being honest what I really enjoy is the science behind it all; getting to know the aircraft and the weapons. The fact that I get to fly in one is really a bonus."
You watched as a fisherman reeled in a catch, measured it and threw it back into the sea.
"That seems very you. Appreciating the mechanics rather than the glory," you smiled up at him.
He shrugged again. "Don't get me wrong. Most of the time I really like it. Being up there can be one of the best feelings in the world. Sometimes even better than-" he stalled, as though he only just realized what words were coming out of his mouth.
"Sex?" you finished his thought for him with a quirk of your brow.
He coughed out a laugh and rubbed the back of his reddening neck in embarrassment. "I didn't really mean to go there, it just sort of came out," he apologized, "but yeah. Sometimes, depends on the flight...or the uh, sex, I guess."
"Hopefully not both at the same time."
"No," he snorted. "I don't think I can concentrate on so many things at once, and I doubt my frontseater would really appreciate the distraction either."
"So, you don't see yourself being a WSO forever?" you asked, curious to know if he knew the answer himself.
He shook his head. "Most wouldn't or can't, rather."
You finished your ice cream and continued walking toward the far end of the pier. "There was a man I met my first night at The Hard Deck. Seemed to know both the bartender and you guys," you remembered. "Kind of hard to tell how old he was - he could have been 40 or 60 - but he looked to still be a pilot..."
"Oh Mav?" Bob lit up at the mention. "He's a freak of nature. We're pretty sure he drinks stem cells. He's not the average by any means." He shook his head with clear affection. "Some guys do try to keep on as long as their bodies will let them. I just don't think that's me."
"What then?" you asked casually. You didn't think it was really your business to know all of Bob's life plans, seeing as you were still just friends, but you were curious to know what he saw in his future if there was any chance of you being a part of it.
You reached the end of the pier and faced the open water of the Pacific. Nothing for thousands of miles except ships and the endless horizon
"Maybe study a bit more up in Monterey if they'll let me," he pondered. "Maybe get a PhD someday, like you. I do enjoy teaching and of course, every nerd's favorite pastime; research. It might suit me."
You both had your hands on the pier's railing, his little finger just touching yours. The Pacific wind ruffled his hair as you looked up at him. He would be a good teacher with his passion and his patience. You hope he gets the opportunity someday, regardless of whether you're in the picture.
"Assuming I get that far," he shrugged, his eyes somewhere on the horizon line.
You didn't like the implication of his words. Somehow you were fairly certain he wasn't talking about the Navy's capriciousness when it came to its officer's hopes and dreams. "Meaning?" you dared to ask in a quiet voice.
Bob glanced at you, suddenly second-guessing himself. You wondered whether he'd shrug it off again and tell you not to worry about it, but he gathered himself and spoke honestly. "There's been a few scary moments," he admitted with a sorrowful glance in your direction. He was thoughtful for a breath. "I sometimes wonder how long I can keep doing this before my luck runs out. I almost feel like I might jinx myself if I plan too much for the future." He shook his head. "I know that sounds stupidly superstitious."
For the first time it really dawned on you just how dangerous Bob's profession was. Yes, every person in the military faced some type of risk to their life but most weren't traveling at supersonic speeds in sophisticated aircraft daily. Even discounting the immediate threat of warfare, a simple, unavoidable mechanical malfunction could lead to certain death. It came with the territory and there were plenty of headstones in Fort Rosecrans to prove it.
Sensing your apprehension, he continued. "I know...I know it's not ideal," he sighed. "No one wants to have to worry about stuff like this if they don't have to."
You didn't miss the hidden meaning of Bob's words. He was giving you an out. You've come this far together, and you were approaching a fork in the road. You could either continue your carefree friendship and go on to live your life under less precarious circumstances or you could burden yourself with the very real possibility of losing a partner at any given moment. He wanted you to know he wouldn't judge you for choosing the former.
Up until now you had been so preoccupied with whether Bob might leave one day - whether by deployment or moving or incompatibility - that you hadn't even considered the possibility that something could happen to him. Something so terrible you didn't even want to consider it. To think that you had been apart all these years and then reunited only for him to...you stopped the thought. You couldn't believe you had even considered passing up on a chance of exploring a future with Bob simply because of your own insecurity. You really didn't know how much time you two might have and here he was, essentially telling you he would understand if you didn't want to be with him because of that risk.
Your words stuck in your throat, you took his hand in yours and gave it a gentle squeeze. He looked down at your entwined fingers and then slowly up to you, the lingering sadness in his eyes fading to that of hopeful anticipation. You turned to each other, and you watched his Adam's apple bob nervously as you stepped closer. You should have done this the first night you saw him, you thought to yourself. You weren't going to wait a moment longer. You tilted your face up to his as he met your lips with is own and you couldn't help the contented sigh that escaped as you finally took the inevitable leap.
At nearly 30, you have had your share of first kisses. Obligatory end of date kisses, drunken kisses at bars and frat parties, ill-fated passionate kisses with men met in far flung places never to be seen again. Not all bad but not all good either.  At the very least you chalked them all up to experience. But with Bob, you felt as though all that experience was out the window. You suddenly felt giddily, deliriously green. Your heart raced and your cheeks burned and for a moment you weren't on that pier but back in your little fort on a summer night actually living the moment that you dreamt about when such things seemed so unlikely to happen to a girl like you.
Bob's hands were framing your face, thumbs stroking the soft skin below your ears when your lips parted. His forehead against yours and your eyes closed, you could hear the smile in his voice. "I've been wanting to do that for a while," he laughed softly.
"We've really been dragging it out these past few weeks, haven't we?" you admitted with your own nervous laugh.
"No, I meant, I've been wanting to do that since I was like, 11..." he smiled as he pulled away just enough to look at you.
You snorted softly, hyperaware of how you must be blushing red-purple. "Even back when I was an ugly duckling?" you replied sardonically.
Bob's brows furrowed in confusion. "What? I don't remember you ever being ugly," he said with such candid offense for your preteen self that all you could do was put your arms around his neck and kiss him again out of sheer gratefulness. What you had ever done to deserve having someone like Bob come into your life not once but twice, you'd never know, but now that you had him you weren't going to let go ever again.
Bob drove you home and walked you to the door of your apartment. You stood on the porch and before either of you could say goodnight you were kissing again - inexplicably feeling like it was some new and wonderous thing that you had only just discovered. You were out of breath by the time you released each other and while every base instinct in you screamed to invite him inside, you let him set the pace.
"Goodnight, Dr. Y/L/N," he said a bit breathlessly but with his usual humor at this recent tradition of yours.
"Goodnight, Lt. Floyd," you smiled back, before giving him one last kiss and letting him hold onto your hand until he stepped off the porch.
