What Shouji Said and What It Might Mean

Okay okay so hang on here. Let me break this down and make sure I’m getting this right based on this pov switch in the story so far

Shouji asks

And... yeah. I mean, what does it have to do with the heteromorph’s cause? From what the PLF guy says, he talks about people killing them “for being gross”, talks about the Heroes not being THEIR Heroes (all good reasons to want change and justice), and that Spinner will lead the way to the “center of this society”, to the revolution

But this is in no way helping the cause when this is just violence. It’s all violence and of course I know why. The hatred from the heteromorphs has been growing over time, over years; ever since there have been heteromorphs, that hatred has been shared and has been building until the breaking point (this battle here being the breaking point)

Of course they are furious. Of course they want to do something about it. If the Heroes won’t, who will? They will

BUT let's look at this from Shouji’s perspective

I’ve written a post a while ago about what I think Shouji’s motivations could be to become a Hero. It’s only based off a few moments, but already I think it’s pretty clear that Shouji is a peaceful person, who, if faced with conflict, wants to do whatever he can to stop it and/or put people at ease

He gives off a kind of “quiet support” vibe. Like he wouldn’t make a huge statement about the way heteromorphs are treated, but rather, he’d try and offer a helping hand whenever he could and make sure heteromorphs are treated well

I believe one of the biggest moments indicating this is here

In the chapter where everybody is saying goodbye to their families and friends, Shouji is instead shown shaking her hand. This tells me that, since returning to UA, he has used this opportunity to seek her (and perhaps others like her) out and make sure she is okay

She is a victim of discrimination, and we know this. We’ve seen her almost being attacked. Shouji, being a heteromorph himself and of course facing discrimination too, has likely took this opportunity to make sure she is okay, perhaps get to know her and her experiences. If not, why else would they be shaking hands?

To me, Shouji seems like the kind of person who’s took it upon himself to become a Hero in order to show that heteromorphs aren’t the “monsters” society sees them as. That they, too, can offer a helping hand, that they can save people, fight for people, care for them just like any human can

With how Shouji seems like a calming caring person, that he projects this “quiet support” vibe and makes an effort to show that he chooses to put himself out there and make a difference, it’s not hard to think this might be why he’s become a Hero

You could say that he might want everyone to see the good side of heteromorphs. Not the tainted creatures people seem to think of them as, but the kind and caring side that so many citizens seem to have forgotten in these times

So, returning back to the chapter, we then have this

I believe this is Shouji basically saying “If this revolution is for a peaceful cause, then why are you okay with attacking innocent people? Surely, if you’re causing this much damage to be seen, to be heard, then you would have considered the safety of innocent vulnerable people who are not a part of this!”

I’ve seen fans say “Well duh, of course the mob didn’t evacuate the patients, they’re Villains!”

Does that include the citizens who are there to fight for their rights too?

Ah yes, the Villains, of course, they wouldn’t show any care for them, right?

Ah, and yes, even more Villains have accompanied them for this cause, of course

Yep, all Villains here. Every last one of them. They wouldn’t think about the patients. They are evil. Not a shred of care left in them. /sarcasm

Point being, this huge crowd may be full of hatred, may be seeking that justice they so righty deserve, but apparently not one of them thought about the innocent people who are not a part of their anger

Sure, there are people who have accepted heteromorphs, who have grown up in areas where they are taught to accept them, but there are also those who haven’t and who would rather see them die. Does that include the people in the hospital?

Have they discriminated against heteromorphs? Do they hate them? Yes? No?

How do the heteromorphs know this?

The answer is: They don’t know. At this moment, there is just so much anger between everyone, a cycle of rage feeding itself over and over and over again in one space that it’s suffocating

When you’re in a space that is just a constant self-fulfilling cycle of hatred, it’s hard to think straight. It’s hard to get out of it. It’s hard to think clearly with so much going on all at once

I mean, panels like these should tell you just how suffocating it must be to be there right now

And that’s Shouji’s point

“If this revolution is for a peaceful cause, then why are you okay with attacking innocent people? Surely, if you’re causing this much damage to be seen, to be heard, then you would have considered the safety of innocent vulnerable people who are not a part of this!”

They haven’t considered that. They aren’t thinking. They’re acting on anger, and if this keeps going, then the patients will get wrapped up in this, and innocent people will get hurt

And then the last part

Shouji says it all

“If you haven’t considered that, if the answer is no, then I’ll never forgive you.”

Think back on what I’ve said about Shouji in this post. Think about how my interpretation is that Shouji became a Hero to correct the prejudiced views on heteromorphs

Someone who is here, in this job, who wants to change something and has taken to showing his kindness, to projecting this personality of support and care and reaching out his hand to those who have been wronged, seeing a mob of revolutionaries like this attacking out of hatred and hurt and revenge for everything they’ve been through, for their cause...

I’d be kinda mad too

I’d think something along the lines of “This is not helping anything, this violence is not the kind of revolution a future should be built on. Don’t become the monster's people already see us as.”

Or something along those lines

Finally, I’d just like to add that, yes, I know this mob aren’t just here to cause chaos for the sake of a revolution. They, specifically Spinner, are also here for Kurogiri. But the reason I am centering this post around the cause and innocent people is because that is what Shouji is talking about in this scene. I am trying to analyse, from his perspective, what he is saying and what he might mean, as that is the title of this post. If ever Shouji mentions Kurogiri or the rest of the war, then I will talk about that too when I analyze this chapter in other posts. Otherwise, I’m just focusing on Shouji’s POV at this moment

This is the only way I can see it until Hori gives us a proper explanation and continuation on why Shouji said this, and more on his backstory and his reasons for becoming a Hero

Really, I feel like I’d need more info on Shouji to know his motives and such. But the stuff I have mentioned about him is only from past analysis and therefore is what I’m basing this off. I’m sure we’ll get more Shouji info in the following chapters

Shoji’s lack of response seemed to make the world freeze. Or maybe everything is going faster? Spinning. You’re mind is spiralling, that’s what this feeling is.

As soon as the request was spoken into existence, you regretted it. Never had Shoji made you uncomfortable, he loved that about you, you were never so much as apprehensive around him. But now, you fidget and tense at his (intense) gaze. Shoji’s eyes flicked over to the window looking over the dorm’s courtyard, but not looking at anything in particular. Just a minute ago you wanted to run away and die in a corner, and now you just want him to look at you.

“I.. I didn’t mean—“

“It’s okay,” Shoji finally emerged from his trance, though only for a second. “It’s just…”

You held your breath, waiting for something, anything to ease your racing thoughts that tried to think of how to go back in time and tell yourself to shut the fuck up.

“I’m not from the cities. I know how my appearance makes people feel, my hometown made sure of that,” he says softly, almost inaudible, still not looking at you. “I don’t want… I don’t want you to—“

“I’m not scared of you,” you didn’t mean to say that. You tried to think of something else to say, anything to make him believe you. But all you could muster was a hand on his thigh.

Shoji turned his head to look at your hand, and with a deep breath he continued, “I know. I’m just…”

He finally looks at you again, “I’m not exactly nice to look at. I thought I’d always be— I don’t know, I didn’t think anyone would want—“ he gestures to his face. “… this.”

Without thinking, you swung your legs over to sit on his lap. Shoji chokes out something akin to a gasp, but does not object when your arms move to embrace him. Shoji’s hands almost seem to shake as he slowly lifts his arms to return the gesture.

It was short lived, however, when Shoji pulled away, and after a moment of thought, reached to his mask. Your hands follow his to grasp the hem of his mask and pull it over his head. For a moment you still can’t see as his hair hangs over his face. When you brushed the hair away, Shoji didn’t know what he expected from you. He searched your face for any suggestion of uncertainty or regret, but all he found was your beautiful smile.

Ok, so I was thinking to myself and I realized that Mezou Shoji is such an unsung hero in 1-A. Bro’s single-handedly kept the class alive at several points in the story and really deserves more credit.

Here’s a list of things of some of the things he’s done:

1. Snagged half his classmates in the USJ. If it weren’t for him, 1-A couldn’t have destroyed the door and Tenya wouldn’t never gotten to U.A in time

2. Saved Izuku from Himiko.

3. Helped calm down Dark Shadow by carrying Izuku to them.

4. Held out the longest against Nine which allowed Katsuki and Izuku to advance and used his body to shield the two children.

5. Managed to calm down a group of mutant protesters with the power of empathy alone.

Mezou needs more love. Dude’s such a great guy and an interesting character.
