My takeaway from the past 24+ hours...
There are so many of us that rely on ao3, whether you're a reader or writer. It brings us joy, it gives us an escape from the real world, and it lets us come together as a community to share stories and scenarios about our favorite fandoms and characters. The amount of posts I have seen on multiple platforms lamenting over the DDoS attacks is overwhelming - but with most of them comes a delightful cheer to the volunteers working to resolve this issue.
I've seen so many statements of praise for those volunteers, which is exactly what they deserve, and more. Can you imagine working for over 24 hours straight, on a volunteer basis, against something like this? They're the real MVPs, and I think our appreciation for them gets lost until moments like this rise.
With that said, here is my first real takeaway...
Don't bitch when ao3 does a donation drive. They work hard to keep the archive up and running, and with that costs money. Every server, every new addition or feature you want to see added to help make the site better, it costs money. The legal team that is defending fanfic authors??? MONEY. SO! DON'T! COMPLAIN!
I'm not saying you have to go out and donate your paycheck to ao3 - but I will say that, especially with this situation, if you can donate even a little bit to show your support, it means more than you probably realize, and even if you can't donate (which is totally okay), be kind to those who work on the archive. Send them kind words of encouragement, rather than flaming the archive because it's under attack - because yeah, I've seen people bitching AT ao3 for not working fast enough, or for it still being down. STOP IT.
My second takeaway...
Don't believe everything you see on the internet. Ao3 themselves have advised that the group claiming to take credit for this attack is to be treated with skepticism. And not only that, let's NOT automatically make assumptions about who is responsible just because of an organization's name. It's just a NAME, it doesn't identify a person's origin, background, etc. But I'm not here to dive into that much further. Point: I better not see any Sudanese hatred on my dash, or I will bite you.
My third takeaway...
Treat your fanfic writers with respect. We all now see first hand how much we depend on these stories. As I said above, for some it's an escape, a creative release, and a way to communicate with other people through similar interests. It's a beautiful creation, neither above nor below any other kind of literature.
Consider commenting, reblogging, kudos, anything you can to let the authors know you enjoyed and appreciate their works. Everyone is free to communicate in the way that suits them best, but every little bit is appreciated - as a fanfic writer myself, I can tell you that even a little heart emoji has made my day. It's like receiving a second kudos, and tells me that someone appreciated my efforts enough to give me a double thumbs up.
Any form of communication with the authors is appreciated. It lets them know that people are genuinely interested. We live in a world where INSTANT GRATIFICATION is taking over, but creations such as this take time. Talk with the authors, ask them about their wips, tell them they're doing a great job. Do NOT pester about "when are you updating next?" or the dreaded AI option - again, I will BITE PEOPLE if I see you doing this. Just...have some respect, show your appreciation, it's more than JUST FANFIC.
At the end of the day I guess this post is about being kind. Not pointing fingers or slandering people due to a name. It's about appreciating the things we do have, and not taking them for granted. Whether it's the brave cyber warriors currently fighting these DDoS attacks on the frontline, or the authors writing for not only their enjoyment, but for others too. Let's all respect one another, and show our support when and where we can.
HUGE THANK YOU TO THE VOLUNTEERS AT AO3, YOU ARE THE REAL MVPS!!!

Hi, I've been following your blog for some years and learned a lot from it - thank you so much for your constant service to the community of writers! Many of my questions in the past have already been answered by your blog. Today I would like to address a question to which I have not yet found an answer (if you have already answered it, I would appreciate a link): I'm writing a story where two partners come from very different backgrounds (one poor, one very rich). The poorer partner loves the richer one but has psychological problems entering into a relationship due to the existing social differences. What ways/possibilities do you see to solve this problem? Thank you so much!
Rationalizing a "Rags and Riches" Romance
There are lots of potential issues someone from a lower income bracket might have when entering into a relationship with someone in a much higher income bracket, and it helps to list out what some of those are before looking for solutions. So, for example, things like:
-- internalized dislike of wealthy people -- embarrassment over lavish lifestyle -- discomfort with spendthrift mentality -- shame for benefiting when others don't
You can spend some time thinking of others, but looking at individual issues makes it easier to think of ways your character might be able to rationalize them. For example:
-- internalized dislike of wealthy people can be offset by seeing that some wealthy people can be giving and kind.
-- embarrassment over lavish lifestyle can be offset by the rich love interest being comfortable spending time in the poorer love interest's world and not being embarrassed themselves by the more austere lifestyle.
-- discomfort with spendthrift mentality can be offset by the rich love interest making an effort to be more thrifty and spending money in thoughtful, benevolent ways.
-- shame for benefiting when others don't can also be offset by the rich love interest sharing their wealth with those who need it, and by respecting the poorer love interest's wishes as far as not wanting lavish gifts, not wanting to waste money, etc. Also: by seeing that the richer love interest donates time, money, and attention to beneficial causes.
The offset that these kinds of things create can help the poorer love interest rationalize being with the richer one, not only because they love each other, but because they can see tangible ways in which their psychological problems with the match are balanced out.
I hope that helps!

i'm pretty sure you've made a few posts about doing potential crossovers with your ocs, so i wanted to know if you think any of your ocs would be friends? or at least be able to sit in a room together?
Thanks so much for this q!! I've been pretty into talking about my ocs so really really appreciate you sending the question! <33
I have a couple of them here (and I don't think I can get to all of them, so this is just a tl;dr of some of them, esp ones that are 'technically mcs' from other books) including some additions that I should expand on so here's a quick rundown:
Inam (oc, laws-ish) -> Inam started out as my old Laws MC I played with, but quickly morphed into a completely different character. She's a IP lawyer who works for a prominent firm and is on strictly professional terms with Nora. They hit up each other after Nora did her thing with the Hand of Mahra and collaborate sometimes, on say the process of discovery in a case or just merely consulting each other on subject matters. They're not friends, I'd like to think but also not entirely enemies, if that makes sense. It's usually the tough stuff they really do reach out for help, otherwise they're just merely correspondences over a phone call or an email.
Ramona "Rowan" (mc, murder at homecoming) -> Rowan is also not technically "part of the gang" rather she comes to New York for an internship and stumbles onto the old story of those 'corrupted cops' Nora was looking into, many years ago (that got her kicked out from the NYPD). Rowan was targeted by the very same precinct and so Nora found out, she reached out to her and both of them settled down to talk about it. They're still in touch w each other, but Rowan ends up moving onto different prospects - the whole "kid detective" thing got too dangerous with Gabbie her parents didn't want to put her in such a career, so she took up investigative journalism instead in a non-profit company which is where she meets Aloka.
Aloka (mc, veil of secrets) -> Aloka, after the events in Birchport, ends up going back to New York to work for a non-profit investigative journalism company that were impressed with her work on the Sterling murders. She ends up creating a whole new life for herself there - having been a little worn-out by the stuff she wrote for the New York Gazette and reluctant to work with the FBI. Her domain of interest is reporting on 'missing people cases' specifically people of colour who are constantly overlooked by the media as well as 'instituitional corruption' which is why she was keen on taking up Rowan under her wing after reading her work. The two would have this kind of Gandalf/Frodo relationship where Aloka looks out for Rowan after learning she'd never had someone who was an adult figure who believed in her.
Morgan (oc, the unexpected heiress- next generation): Morgan is basically the 'next gen'/descendant of 'Lillian' Hayes (name in quotes as placeholder) and basically the Hayes family being this wealthy well-to-do electricity moguls passed down from generation to generation. Morgan is the next heir, their focus is on the Hayes-Horowitz company's R&D division where they aim to create more sustainable technology, which leads to a lot of say, patent troubles which is where Inam comes in. Morgan is pretty much Inam's regular client since they work in a field of mechanics, electronics and tech where it's prevalent to run into intellectual property disputes which suck. The two of them then have this sort of deep, close friendship and the shared love of getting into the thick of the mysteries as well as their background in STEM, as well as their general motivations in life, so to speak.
and some new ocs/mcs i haven't talked about and i'm probably going to fuck it up by introducing them into this shared world!
Ronan "Cato" (mc, the heist: monaco): Cato is the name he goes by as an alias, as well as irl and after the events of The Heist, he ends up doing some more - stealing from the rich and donating the profits to museums and libraries and schools. (Ik there are multiple endings and Cato does end up running a little international crime organization in the Good one) but I hc a couple years later, he kind of fades into retirement - despite having like villas in Spain etc, he kind of settles down in New York since his friends Eris and Rye end up kind of in their own bubbles - can't be an international thief all the time.
I'd like to think he goes for "one last heist" on his own and ends up getting caught by Nora and they kind of engage in their own quid pro quo - in exchange for Cato telling her the real story, his reasons for doing-so-and-so and for Nora to let him go, only for her to stumble onto something insanely massive. Or maybe he engages in a different "heist", meets up with Trystan and they just become really good friends because why not? Trystan knows people in literature, in underground drug rings, in the highest of posts in a dictatorship country, what's one more friend?
Penn (oc, platinum-ish): I'd like to think Penn became a full-time producer for MC while he was at Overknight records - maybe after Micah (Ozone) leaves to focus on his own career (?). Penn ends up producing a lot of smash hits for 'Cadence' and I'd like to think he meets Inam after Cadence gets her own sort of "Lana Del Ray sued by Radiohead" suit after her. Inam's admittedly a very good IP lawyer, so they win the lawsuit (I hc Inam received help from Nora, who in-turn received a lesson in music theory by Samaya). I feel like Penn would also end up in Trystan's social circle somehow and they'd know something about each other - he is a critically-acclaimed producer after all.
Tomyris 'Iris' (oc, the phantom agent prequel): GAIA must have had a starting point, so I'd like to think Iris was one of those masterminds who built it up from the beginning. It wouldn't have been called GAIA (since I assume the real TPA story takes place years into the future where advanced world-ending tech ends up taking over the world), rather maybe starting out as a private detective business that kind of allies itself with the Ginovesi Agency. Iris is just one person, they kind of started out as a cop themselves but saw the internal corruption and decided to leave the position. I'd also like to think Iris tackles a whole different domain than Nora does. Their forte would be more on the side of "financial disputes and embezzlement" and would likely join forces with Nora upon knowing they could benefit from each other rather than worry they are each other's enemies.
Iris's character is still a WIP so I don't know how to approach their story a little. Maybe I'll figure it out someday, but as of now I'll stick with the characters mentioned in my original OC list and figure out the rest lmao
Thank you so much for sending me an ask!

July Commission Slots OPEN!
Hello everyone!
I just wanted to say a huge thanks to all of the new followers I have gained over the last few days. Thank you all for taking an interest in my work and I hope you are looking forward to more of my nonsense!
Secondly, I just wanted to let everyone know that July commission slots are now open! I specialise in work on TTRPGs, OCs and fantasy/Sci-Fi stuff in general. In particular, I like drawing dragons and magical creatures, and recently I've started dipping my toes into doing furry art again (I used to draw furries back in the day but stopped due to getting so many shitty comments from horrible people).
If you like the work I do and would like me to draw something for you, please get in touch at [email protected]
Here are some examples of the kind of work I do:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, here is a list of the types of commission I do + base prices.
On top of commissions, I am also still plugging away at my webcomic, Flowerpunk. I have pretty much done all of the character panels and I am moving onto doing the backgrounds now. If you haven't heard about this project before, I did an introductory post here for it:
To those who have been following the project for a while, I have to apologise for taking so long getting it off the ground. Since I am a full-time freelancer with a disability, I can only do so much work in a day, which means I'm going at a much slower pace than I had hoped, plus I am still battling autistic burnout from the hell I went through last year. Nonetheless, a launch date for this year is still very likely.
If you would like to help support this project, a Ko-Fi donation is a great way to do so. Even small donations go a really long way.
Please also consider sharing this post if you can, it would help me a lot.
Thank you all for your continued support, and I hope you've all had a great pride month!

2022 Prompt Story Poll Results
The votes have been cast and the poll has been closed so let's go over the results. Overall, I received twice as many voters this year as the previous poll. I consider this quite the improvement in not only interaction, but also shows how much I've grown over the past year. Now without further ado, let's get to the main reason the poll was made in the first place.
The winner of the 2022 Prompt Story Poll is...
Writing Prompt 418: Female Slobification (Weight Gain, Burping, and Farting)
Top 5
1st Place: Writing Prompt 418: Female Slobification (Weight Gain, Burping, and Farting)
2nd Place: Patreon Prompt 224: Persona 5 Girls Slobby Cow Girls TF
3rd Place: Writing Prompt 450: SSBBW Sumo Ryuko (Kill La Kill) Weight Gain
5th Place (Tie):
Writing Prompt 452: Hex Maniac (Pokémon) Weight Gain
Writing Prompt 499: Miia and Centorea (Monster Musume) Weight Gain via Mutual Feeding and Sexual Content
Thank you everyone who voted! I will begin writing the winning story shortly. As for the runner ups, have no fear. They may come back at sometime in the future. And speaking of the future...
Future Project Polls
Let me go over the results for each of the product interest polls I did.
Discord Server: I set up a Discord server where I can freely post my stories and my readers can interact with one another.
Approval: 63.5%
-Message received loud and clear. I'll set up a Discord server and try to have it in a semi-usable state within the next few days. Hopefully this will get me to log onto my account more frequently at least.
Writing Livestreams: I set up a Piczel or another NSFW friendly streaming account to occasionally show off the writing process.
Approval: 34.9%
-An expected response, but one I'm okay with. Saves me from the headaches of figuring out how to stream.
Ko-fi Prompts: Accept Ko-fi donations (or similar one time payments) for prompt requests that can be done at anytime.
Approval: 54%
-More than enough to justify pulling the trigger on this one. I have a Ko-fi setup, I just don't advertise it very often. I'll make an official post when I open these up along with some guidelines to avoid complete chaos.
Bounty  Commission Slots: Special commission slots for specific story themes  (fetishes, characters, etc.) that come with a discount.
Approval: 57.1%
-Also enough to go ahead with, but with the caveat that this will be highly dependent on how much time is available to me. That being said, this will probably be a good option if I really want to write about something specific, but still want a bit of payment to go with it.
Crowdfunded  Stories: Put up story ideas that would be written after people donate a  certain amount towards them. (Example: I put up the concept of a cruise ship where people become slobs with a goal of $50. If multiple people send in enough to meet the goal, I approve the story and write it.)
Approval: 50.8%
-Probably the most decisive one on the list. I'm assuming this will be highly dependent on how much the goals are for each story. Might do one or two of these just to test the waters then make an actual decision if they'll be a regular thing.
YCH  Story Auctions: Similar to Your Character Here art auctions, but replaced with story scenarios people can bid on to decide which character will be the focus. Example: I make a YCH about someone becoming a slobby pig person and people bid to decide on which character it will be.
Approval: 50.8%
-Same story as the crowdfunded stories. I'll give them a few tries and see how it goes.
Fetish Novel: Self-publish a novel length fetish story on Amazon, Gumroad, or similar site that people can purchase.
Approval: 55.6%
-This would be something I work on in the background of everything else. I have two ideas for said novel, one where I kind of make the kinks more subdued and the other where it's a bit more obvious. I'll make an update if this makes any headway.
Conclusion: Mostly positive reactions to all ideas. I'll obviously try to iron out the details on any of these I decide to try out. Look forward to these experiments in the future. Either they'll shine like stars or like piles of burning tires.
Fetish Suggestions
Next, let me address a few fetish suggestions I got from the survey.
Messing and Scat
-No. Like I've said in the past, these are things that I am not comfortable writing about. I'm sorry, but they're not something I see myself ever including in my stories.
Clown, Bimbo, Fusion, and any other Personality TF
-Transformation is something I enjoy writing, but I'm also aware is less popular than my other kinks. That being said, I won't say no to indulging in these from time to time.
Muscle Growth, Giant/Giantess, Futa, Blueberry Expansion, Inflation, Uglification, and Males
-Things I'm all for using, but also fall under kinks that aren't the most popular. Still don't mind writing about them.
Hypnosis, IQ Loss, and other Mental Changes
-Same as the transformation stories. Fun to write, but not always the most popular. That being said, I would like to try my hand at hypnosis again. Seems like a fun premise to combine with any other number of stories.
Hair Growth, Squashing, and Pussy Expansion
-Unless I have a good premise for these, I think these particular kinks will remain a secondary focus in my stories.
Any suggestions for Slob and/or Weight Gain
-That's mostly what I do already and I don't plan to stop anytime soon.
Character/Franchise Suggestions
Next, let me address a few character and franchise suggestions.
Persona
-Probably my most frequently requested series. Not exactly tired of the franchise yet, but something that should be expected to show up on a regular basis.
Danganronpa
-Same as Persona in that it shows up often, but I do feel like I could do more with certain characters. Just haven't had a chance to do anything with my favorites yet like Miu, Ibuki, or Sakura.
Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss
-Helluva Boss has been a good source, but I'm not sure I want to do a full story on Hazbin Hotel until the first season actually premieres. Still, pretty impressive how much this has shown up with only a pilot and a few preview animations.
Koboyashi's Dragon Maid, Street Fighter, Pokemon, Panty and Stocking, Fallout, and Kill La Kill
-Yes please.
Devil May Cry, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Demon Slayer
-Popular series that I'm honestly astounded I haven't done anything for yet.
Keijo, Indivisible, and Plus-Sized Elf
-Series I would love to write about, but also recognize that they're not the most popular or well known.
Futurama, Inside Job, DC, Marvel, and any other Western Franchises
-I won't deny that my interests lean more towards the East in terms of interest. Not that I don't want to write about these things, just that they'll probably come up a lot less often.
Velvet Crowe (Tails of Beseria) and Mass Effect
-These are things I've actually started, but fell off from one reason or another. Not that they're bad, just that I need to find time to get back to them.
Trails, Miraculous Ladybug, Highschool DxD, Warcraft, 40k, Starcraft, The Witcher, Bravely Default, One Piece, Edens Zero, Black Clover, Fire Force, Cyberpunk, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Naruto, and any Fire Emblem besides Awakening.
-Can't write about things I don't know. Simple as that.
Relaxation Destination
-Let me show the results of where people would like for me to relax, which was totally not a way to decide what the theme for the next prompt request session will be. WINK
A library with a few of my favorite books: 45.8%
Sitting at the food court of a dying mall, enjoying a pastry from Cinnabon: 33.3%
Beachside with an umbrella, a chair, and a cooler full of drinks: 14.6%
In an art studio wildly painting an alternative view of the world: 6.3%
Fattening Career
About 72% of the people polled don't know about it, so I'll just put a reminder here that I'm working with Bladerune9 as a writer for their in progress weight gain visual novel, Fattening Career.
Fattening Career: https://forum.weightgaming.com/t/fattening-career-3d-weight-gain-visual-novel-0-04-released-for-free/24897
Conclusion
A very insightful series of results to go along with an interesting year. Not going to lie, looking a little rough to start 2023, but I'll try to keep pushing forward. Thanks to everyone for voting, leaving words of encouragement, or just reading my stuff.
See you all in 2023!

“I wasn’t expecting to see you here early.”
“Well, expect the unexpected.”
“Don’t turn the motto back at me. I’m sick of hearing it so many damn times.”
“What? You and I both know that it’s true. You’re here early too, so, technically you don’t get to say anything.”
Jeongin straightened his bow tie, then patted down the sides of his perfectly ironed tux with not a crinkle to be found. Knowing him, it was a miracle that he hadn’t messed it up in some form yet. He promptly took out his pocket square to clean off his glasses.
“You’re looking nice. Seems like they don’t mind spending money now on you these days.” He blew off the flecks of dust on his lenses.
“They know that they get their return on their investment. And thank you.”
You smoothed down the sides of your dusty pink dress that nearly went all the way down to your ankles. Had you any other choice, it would’ve been something different, but, dresses were really good at hiding your thigh holster compared to the slacks you usually favored. You didn’t mind the times that you would have to put on a pretty dress, it somewhat reminded you that there was normal life outside of your job. Not to mention, they had started sending you jewelry as well. You always had liked the look of a diamond necklace.
“You do your research for tonight?”
Jeongin nodded, then took from his pocket his phone to read over the details.
“I’ve done a background check on everyone attending, we shouldn’t have any issues. It’s already a low risk event anyway. Charity is never something to get too worked up over, but, you never know with the detail that some of these people come with...who they might be tied to...”
“--The only people we can trust is ourselves.” You nodded with arms crossed.
“Expect the unexpected, I know.” He slid his phone back into his inside suit pocket to adjust his cufflinks.
“--Nervous?” You took note of his fidgeting actions.
“Nervous? No. I’ve been through this before. You know that.”
You flicked your partner right on his forehead strung with his white hair. You had really wished that he had picked a less conspicuous color, but he had strings to pull that you didn’t.
Jeongin cleared his throat, “You do your once over?”
“Do you even need to ask? I did it hours ago and when we arrived. You know that I’ve done this before too.”
“I know. I know.”
Jeongin looked out at the vast circular atrium that made up the center of the hotel. Several stories down under the glass rooftop, you could hear the faint sprinkling of the intricate fountain which smelled of copper. A bit further down, you could see the tips of the tree branches from the indoor landscaping. Across the way, a door slammed with residents tucking in their ties. The two men you had recognized from the roster: a simple thing which made you feel at ease. Your young partner must’ve started to have an effect on you. A sense of unease seemed to quell in your neck. You always listened to your hunches.
“W-what do you think he thinks of us?” Jeongin broke the silence.
“Well,” From inside the room you had waited outside, you could hear his distant murmuring, so you lowered your tone. “I think that he has yet to trust us. It’s only been a few weeks. He doesn’t seem like the kind to give himself up easy. That, and I’m sure his resentment of his father must have some influence.”
“You think he hates us?”
“I think he hates his father for hiring us. I mean, wouldn’t you? His old security detail, he had them for years.”
“I guess so. But, we’re not like his old detail.”
“No. We’re not. I don’t think he gets that yet. I think he sees us as one more way his father has a hold on him.”
“It’s not like he can do much else about it when his dad’s a kin--”
“--No, no, thank you, really, it’s lovely. Some of your best work. Thank you.”
Chan swung open the door to his room, stopping Jeongin right in his sentence.
“Ah. You’re here already. That’s...punctual.”
As dazzling and showy as ever, Chan looking nothing short of a magazine model. For a prince, he had certain...appearances that he had to maintain. Today, it was a velvety and maroon suit jacket with a white button up. On the collar, two matching brooches had been perfectly placed, and they were silver like moonlight in the shape of English ivy and adorned with diamonds. On his lapel, he wore the royal insignia of the lion and the wolf. Behind him, you could see his slew of stylists cleaning up their makeup kits and obscene assortment of designer dress shoes for him to pick from. You had thought before that he even smelled like royalty: stuffy white roses with a hint of priceless cognac.
Jeongin bowed his head respectfully. “Everything has been prepared for tonight. The rest of your guards are surrounding the building, and I’ll be corresponding with them as needed, your Highness.” He tapped at his earpiece.
Chan drew his attention over to you, giving you a rather lusty glare. Over the past couple weeks, you had gotten used to it. He was a prince to every extent of the word. If there was anything that he had wanted, he simply had to ask. It drove him insane that all he could do was merely look at you. You had  wondered if he harbored anything else for you besides the way that he would devour the curves of your shoulders and hips.
“Fox. Bee. You look nice tonight. I like seeing you dressed up. Makes me feel less out of place.”
You couldn’t help but let out a little sound of discontentment over his rather affectionate nickname for you. You and your partner had been introduced to him as F and B. Quickly he had figured out Jeongin’s codename as Fox, considering that he had done a poor job picking out one that wasn’t related to him at all. Anyone could tell that boy was fox-like, and he also just wasn’t that creative when it came to picking out a name for himself. B, or Bee as he had decided, was your name; as in bumblebee. After learning about Fox, he figured that there was an animal theme going, so Bee seemed to fit best in his oponion.
You tested his glare with your best, “Thank you, your Highness.”
Jeongin gulped. “Your assistant should be waiting downstairs with your itinerary. She told me that you should meet her first off.”
“You work too hard F. Have some fun tonight, hm? But don’t...drink too much. You’re responsible for my life remember?” Chan clapped his bodyguard on the back.
Your partner nervously laughed and adjusted his glasses once more: his preferred tic.
“And Bee?” Chan rose a brow to lean into close and whisper. “Stay close, alright?”
“Of course, your Highness.”
Chan let out a little scoff after getting one more proper look at your frame. “Damn. You really are stunning. Just a little too dangerous for me though.”
You rolled your eyes, dishing him outa, “Whatever you say, your Highness.”
Jeongin threw you and annoyed glare before tracing after Chan as he sauntered down the hall to the glass elevator.
“Bee? You coming? Or do you have something better to do?” Chan’s voice called down the hall with an echo and a little teasing gesture of his hand.
━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━
It had been seven years since you had chosen this line of work, and each time that you had to go to one of these things, you hated them more and more. Not because they were hard to control--they were easy--but you just hated how many superficial and self-absorbed people that they could fit into one room.
The air was filled with the scent of champagne bubbles and too much Chanel No. 5. From corner to corner of the room, and even next to the ice sculpture of the lion and the wolf crest, silk, satin; velvet and the best cotton could be found. Long gloves covered the arms of ladies with wrinkling skin, and tweed vests held in the guts of men who indulged in their food just as much as their mistresses. All this effort just to appear as if they had given one care about the philanthropic efforts of the royalty.
Several neatly dressed waiters passed you with golden platters of hors d'oeuvres made of ingredients so expensive, they would’ve cost the same amount as the generous donations made by the attendees. If you could’ve, you would’ve scooped up as many of them as you could, just to eat all of their copious amounts of money yourself, but, there was somewhere a rule that you had to keep your hand to yourself when you were on duty. The best that you had to look forward too was take-out to eat at 3 in the morning with Jeongin later.
Buzzing chatter filled your earpiece while each of the additional guards gave their hourly report.
“Damn. It’s fucking colder out here than I thought. It’s fucking summer.” One of them joked to the tune of the other guards laughter.
“Stay focused.” Jeongin scolded over the line. “Don’t leave your posts until your shifts change.”
While he was a timid man, Jeongin was not one to mess around. Son of the director, he knew that he had big shoes to fill. After pleading for years for her to admit him into the academy, she had agreed. Everyone knew the reason why she didn’t want him in this line of work. Too many dead. Too many missing. In some ways, he was also yours to look after.
You trailed after Chan who was busy talking to his assistant and his publicist. While he nodded at their words, you knew that he must’ve been barely listening. Chan never really was one for formality, but much rather enjoyed simplicity and pleasure. Jeongin and you had somewhat of a bet going: out of all the guests, you had liked to bet which one he would take with him to his bedroom. Since you had all the profiles of the guests, you liked to bet a little money on which one it would be.
Jeongin had guessed it to be the heiress and daughter of a tycoon who had made a multi-million won donation in the name of his company. It was ironic; his very company was a big-scale pollutor who liked to make nice with the crown. She was conventionally very pretty: long legs, a thin frame, she was educated and looked as if she could hold somewhat of a conversation...not like that mattered to him.
You had predicted it to be the foreign CEO who had just started business dealings with the crown. While she might’ve looked a bit stuck-up and prim, she was intimidating, and a challenge. Chan loved challenges. Chan also had a pension for pretty boys with a bit too much money on their hands--usually inherited--and with nothing much else to do other than dote on him. There were plenty of those attending the gala tonight.
Chan snaked through the crowd, bowing his head at all of the Good evening, your Highnesses and the It’s a pleasure to meet you, your Highnesses. Every few moments or so he would take a bite from a golden plate and then pop it into his mouth. The whole night long, he would hold his glass with him and it would get refilled for him without him even needing to ask. You sometimes liked to pretend that in some places, they must’ve assigned someone to watch him from afar to make sure that he would never need anything before it was given to him. It wouldn’t have surprised you.
“Having fun Bee?” Chan languidly rolled his head back, swirling his glass.
“As much fun as you are.” You quipped.
“Anything that I should be concerned about?”
“Nothing of concern.” You stated matter-of-factly. Had you matched his flirting tone, you knew that you wouldn’t hear the end of it for the rest of the night. “Fox. Report?”
“Nothing that I can see. No one has been tagging you.” Jeongin had staked himself up on the upper balcony of the banquet hall room, and had been watching for as long as you had been following after the prince. “You sensing anything strange?” His voice tickled in your in-ear.
“Just a bunch of the normal crowd.” You kept your tone down low. “He’s rubbing noses with the usual. You’ve seen too?”
He chuckled. “Yeah. I know what you mean.”
You followed Chan to his seat nearest the front of the room which had been fashioned into a stage with a clear glass podium in the center. Right in front there was one more crest decorating it. Chan had ensured it to be so: he had wanted everyone to know that this was all for his charity.
“It seems like our bets aren’t working out. He hasn’t talked to either of the...suspects.” Your partner changed his choice of words knowing that the other guards were listening.
From the opposite side of the room both the heiress and the CEO stood with thin glasses of wine in their lithe hands. Chan had in fact walked right past them, and didn’t even notice.
“Tonight is going to be a long night.” Jeongin sighed over the line.
You politely pushed past attendees with a raised hand and a sweet smile. You had found that when you smiled, you had appeared less intimidating.
“Oh wait...what’s this?”
“What?” You whipped your head around after Jeongin’s interjection. “What? Do you see something? What’s the call?”
“Relax! It just looks like he’s approaching someone he wants to talk to. I think both of us are about to be proven wrong.”
“Ah, shit.” You sighed. “Don’t put me on edge like that.”
“I’m only trying to entertain myself.”
“Name. Who is it? You’ve got the roster.”
You partner was quiet for a minute, and you watched from a distance as Chan approached the man leaned over a martini seated at one of the perfectly decorated tables.
“Uh, I think that he’s Lee Minho. Some kind of royalty from somewhere else. Pretty low ranking from the looks of it. I think that he made a donation himself...and it’s...damn, larger than you would expect.”
“Should we be concerned?”
“No. Seems harmless.”
“Thank you for coming,” You made out the words that Chan had mouthed. He drew a chair next to the unknown man.
From what you could tell, Lee Minho was handsome to the full extent of the word: nearly all of his physical features were exemplary and his suit appeared to have been fitted to perfect for him; likely one of a kind. He too wore an insignia on his lapel, but it was one that you hadn’t recognized before. He had immaculately styled hair that had some kind of rebellious and boyish charm to it. The man had a kind of mystery about him too: you had been able to pride yourself in being able to read people, and it had saved your life on more than one occasion. But with him, there was something that you couldn’t place.
“Do they know eachother?” You asked Jeongin.
“Not that I know of. School friend maybe? Seems like all the royals send their kids to the same schools.”
“Hm. That would make sense.”
“Enjoying yourself?” Chan said.
Lee Minho nodded, and rose his glass to clink it with the prince’s.
“Do we think that he’s our...suspect?”
The stranger dipped his head into his hand as he listened to Chan speak. A flirty gesture that you had seen a hundred times or more. Still, the way that he inspected Chan, it wasn’t adoring. Or at least, you didn’t think that it was.
“No. I don’t think so.”
“What the hell are you yapping about?” One of the other guards snapped over the line.
“Um, classified stuff.” Jeongin quickly explained. “Above your paygrade. Don’t worry about it.”
“Fox. Watch out for him tonight.” You snuck over to a corner of the room where you could watch the two of them more discreetly.
“Affirmative....” Your partner paused. “Babydoll.”
“Pffff--Babydoll??” The same guard stifled his laughter. “You call her Babydoll, Fox? Damn, you all must be closer than I thought. Didn’t know that I was missing out on some of the action--”
“--Ever heard of a codename, Three?”
“Babydoll’s her codename.”
A grin crept over your lips. “Expect the unexpected.”
You had almost gotten distracted enough to miss how Lee Minho had leaned over to whisper something into the prince’s ear. After he had done so, Chan laughed out a little, then reached his arm around the other man’s chair comfortably.
“They’re...cozy.” You updated your partner.
“I’m trying to cross-check where he might know him from.”
Chan’s assistant and publicist finally slipped away with giddy little smiles. In many ways, you were jealous of them. They could leave whenever the wanted, eat what they wanted...
Jeongin scoffed. “Well, turns out...nothing. I can’t find anything.”
“Nothing?”
“Negative. I’m not seeing any crossover.”
“So they really are strangers?”
Your partner sighed. “Looks like neither of us are cashing ou--I mean--finding the suspect.”
Under your breath, you wondered aloud, “Who are you...Lee Minho?”
━━━━━━━━━▲━━━━━━━━━
The night drew on longer with the rest of the formalities: the formal dinner, followed by several speeches from important people while dessert was being served. It all led up to the final act: His Royal Highness, Prince Chan’s speech. On several neat notecards marked with the crest, he held them in front of him while he ate his last bits of Mont Blanc Chocolate Pavlova. Even the name of the sweet itself sounded pretentious. Granted, it smelled delicious--as many expensive things did.
You stifled a yawn from your little set up on the edge of the room. At least you should’ve been able to sit, but it turns out that sitting is also against the rules in this line of work. A couple other security and bodyguards had joined you at the edge: some of their heads nodded with sleep, and the others looked as if they had taken one too many energy shots. Luckily, your stamina had been well crafted.
A fancily dressed MC made his way up to the podium and the room filled with applause after the last speaker had said all of their correct mandatory words.
“It is my honor to introduce to the stage, our wonderful head benefactor of this organization, His Royal Highness, Prince Chan of the Crown.
Applause tenfold of before erupted through the whole room and it wasn’t even an afterthought for the every attendee to stand up from their seats in an ovation. It was a force of habit for you, but you found yourself clapping as well.
Chan rose with grace, and re-buttoned his jacket with finesse. A blinding spotlight found him and it made the diamonds adorning his beck wink brilliantly. Even more blinding was his pearl white, and perfectly trained smile accompanied by his wave.
Thank you. Thank you. He mouthed.
“It’s like he’s a frickin’ movie star.” Jeongin groaned.
“Might as well be with the way that they treat him. You know deep down they’re all just terrified.”
Chan made his way up to the stage in all of his regality, and the applause didn’t stop until he cleared his throat. A collective groaning of a couple hundred chairs squeaked when everyone sat back down.
“Thank you everyone, really. I wanted to thank you all for your generous support in your donations to this organization, as well as your association with the crown. I’m sure that all the beneficiaries of your donations are beyond thankful compared to me. Without you, this would not be possible.” Chan spoke with grandiose gestures, as usual, but this time, he had found you on the side of the room. “Listen, aside from being a prince, I’m also just a person. A person who knows what it means to struggle, to--”
“--I can’t listen to this anymore.” You whispered into the quiet room, and to your partner.
“Just a few more hours.” He droned. “I almost wish that something would happen so that we don’t have to sit though much else of this.”
“Be careful what you wish for.”
In the corner of your eye, Lee Minho shifted in his seat, but still kept his undivided attention to the stage. You figured he must’ve been just like the rest of them: enamored by the flashiness of the crown--and Chan. He had a way of putting a spell on people: it was the kind of spell that a prince of deception had crafted after years of being kept under lock and key.
“--Anyway, what I’m trying to say, royal or fanciful we all might be, in the simplest way, we’re all just people, therefore this is what connects us all. Thank you.”
Chan was gifted yet another standing ovation that was somehow even more thunderous than before.
“Yeah right.” You scoffed. “People born into money. There’s a difference.”
Chan gave his last waves, then a clamor echoed from the back of the room. At first, it had just sounded like the same raucous laughter you had heard all night, but then it shifted to something different. The sound of laugher turned into shouting, then screams: high pitched and piercing. You had seconds to respond, head whipping around the room to catch sight of the confused prince. In your in-ears, the the sound of gunshots echoed with rapid-fire speed. Machine guns. Shouting commands barked in your ear, and muddled with Jeongin’s string of demands and questions.
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT THERE? REPORT! REPORT!”
Your heart instantly started beating into hyperdrive, and your legs sprinted as fast has physically possible
“THEY’VE GOT GUNS!” A shrill and cracked voice of an older woman wailed from the back of the room.
Immediately after she had said so, shots fired into the darkened room with sparks, and the metallic sound of bullets hitting the marbled ground followed.
Chan looked around in his panic for you, petrified on the stage. You slung your gun out from your thigh holster and latched onto him with all of your might.
“TH-THEY JUST CAME OUT OF NOWHERE IN THESE VANS. THEY’RE ARMOURED, WE CAN’T--”
“Get the fuck down there and secure the exists!” Jeongin growled into his mic. “B--is the prince secure??”
“Secure!” You yelled back. Using your body as a barrier, you led the cowering prince through the mass hysteria of the crowd.
“Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Shit.” Chan shook under your iron grip.
More shots fired into the room and bodies parted like the sea and fell over each other.
From the balcony, you had caught Jeongin aiming his own gun at the chaos below.
“I’ll cover you! Fuck! There’s so many of them! Get him to the car out back--Three, Six, meet B out there! Three!? Six!? Report!”
“Three and Six are down F!” One of the guards panted. “I can provide cover out back!!”
“Who’s speaking??” Jeongin bellowed, then aimed from above at one of the intruders. Your only focus was on weaving you and Chan out of there, but you had seen one of them in a blur. Each of the men with guns wore dark grey suits with black ties and leather gloves. Each of them wore their own crest: and it was all red.
“Bee?? Bee???” Chan shouted out for you, and jumped every time the crack of a shot echoed in the ballroom.
“I’ve got you, your Highness. We’ll be out soon. Keep your head down and listen to me.” Your arm held to him tightly, and you soon found the exit nearest. There was no telling if there would be more of them outside, but you loaded your gun quickly just in case, and pointed it out.
“Jeongin, get your ass down here!”
“Jeongin? Who the fuck is that??” Chan ducked down to hide himself behind your frame.
His name had slipped on your tongue, but that hardly mattered.
“I’ll be down in a second!!!”
“Don’t fucking waste time up there when I need you down here!!”
“Two! Two Reporting!!” A man suddenly yelled in your in-ear. “I’ve made it out back and I’ve secured the exit. The car is safe!!”
“FOX! Now!”
Your partner heaved, “I’m coming, I’m coming!!”
You kicked open the exit door, gun’s still blazing, however one one else could be found on the other side.
“Thank God,” You sighed.
“Oh shit, I’m gonna be sick.” Chan had turned paler than white, then stumbled in your arms.
“Hey, HEY!” You held him upright. “It’s gonna be alright. I’ve got you. You’re safe. You need to trust me. Your life is in my hands and I’m not giving it up easy, got it?”
“O-okay.” He stammered, then attempted to straighten himself.
“The Prince is outside, repeat, The Prince is outside. Two, are you in position?”
“Yes. Yes, I am.”
Other than the fact that you had just escaped absolute peril, the evening was unbearably pleasant. Crickets chirped in the summer evening, and the humidity of the night smelled gorgeously of the lake that was near-by as well as the vast array of flowers that had been purposefully landscaped around the hotel. Chan’s uneven steps scraped at the gravel walkway.
Since you had canvassed the whole building well, you had known exactly where the getaway car was, but you were still careful.
“Bee. Bee!” Chan blabbered. “Have-have I told you yet that I-I’m in love with you?”
“No, you haven’t Your Highness.”
“I fucking am. If I die tonight, I want you to know that I am ridiculously in love with you, and fuck, I wanna--”
“--I’m sorry, Your Highness, respectfully, but now is not the time for this and you are not dying on my watch.”
Somewhere off in the distance, frogs croaked, and the splashing of fish in the lake plopped at the surface waters. You turned a corner to finally see Two waiting his his gun raised. He was a bit of a shorter and scrawnier man, but something about him told you that where he lacked in strength, he must’ve made up for in agility.
“I’m out! I’m out!” Your partner gasped, and over the in-ear you could hear his running footsteps. “I’m almost there! I’ll be there in a second!”
“Your Highness,” Two bowed and opened the car door. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. You can call me Two or J. Either you prefer.”
Jeongin came bounding around the corner with heaving breaths and his clothes askew. His glasses which just barely held onto his face had a crack on them and his knuckles were covered in blood.
“Let’s go.” The younger man prompted.
“In the car you go, Your Highness.” You motioned for him to do so.
Chan whimpered like a toddler.
You shoved his body in, “Stop that. Get in the car.”
“I’m in love with you Bee!” He yelled out, “I’M FUCKING IN LOVE WITH YOU BEE!”
Jeongin slammed the door in his face with a bit of a chuckle.
“He’s delirious.”
“Mm.” your partner smiled. “Sure.”

Twisted Wonderland Actor Au
Basically the cast off-screen
~~~
Riddle Rosehearts: actually pretty chill, not as uptight as his character, very polite
Trey Clover: still good a baking, laughs during serious scenes so he makes up a ton of bloopers
Deuce Spade: one of the few who's completely different from their character, likes messing stuff up, enjoys spooking ace
Cater Diamond: not as addicted to his phone, really nice, can be a very big drama queen sometimes, ace's older bro
Leona Kingscholar: actually a pretty active person (he didn't get all those muscles laying down =>=), the Dad Friend(tm), leaves people shook with his acting
Ruggie Bucchi: his "shishishi" laugh is his actual laugh and people make fun of him for it oop-, not as agile as his character, also not as pranky
Jack Howl: a good boi with a bad boi façade, very polite, also makes up some bloopers because he always falls on his face during fight scenes
Azul Ashengrotto: is a businessman irl, has no problems with donating to any charity (as long as he agrees to their message), hates his fake tentacles cuz he always trips over them
Jade Leech: fun fact, jade and floyd are fraternal twins the staff just made them look alike, actually really nice, gave everyone flowers on the first day they all met
Floyd Leech: doesn't like the fact that he looks like a mirror jade, pretty serious about acting so his acting sometimes spooked people, affectionate boi
Idia Shroud: has no problems going outside and interacting, the fire hair is just his regular hair with lots of extensions and editing, he hates it
Ortho Shroud: the youngest out of all the main cast, Idia's lil bro, actually pretty stronk cuz he's carrying around a full costume of fake robot additions
Malleus Draconia: not actually that tall, he just wears tall heels, very intimidating and will use that to protect the rest of the cast from creeps
Lilia Vanrouge: not that old, is a prankster and enjoys getting into prank wars with the ADeuce duo, hates it whenever he has to 'float' cuz once one of the strings snapped and he fell-
Hello! I am quite new to your page and I love how you draw Kolyat. ♥️ Also, would you care to share some details about your characters?
I’d love to, thanks for asking! Funnily enough, I did a personality quiz for them recently, so I can just copy/paste the results here. Most of my content for Mass Effect is centred around Kolyat Krios and Oriana Lawson:
I write them here: [AO3] I draw them here: [ART TAG]
Everything I do with them is post-war, and them as adults in their 20s navigating the shit heap that is a broken, post-destroy galaxy, and how they cope with their own traumas. They both want to help rebuild, but do it different ways.
Tumblr media
KOLYAT KRIOS
Kolyat Krios has a lot to live up to and change, but prefers to do it on his terms.
Kolyat is a methodical man, and gentle and patient with the people who need it most. He possesses an unexpected depth of emotional intelligence, and becomes a protector of the small and the strays, from a galaxy that often forgets about them.
While Kolyat can be even-keeled, if he is left to stew in his feelings, his anger will get the better of him, and he will react. He has a reputation for salt, and for his surliness; he also has a tendency to hide himself from others as a defence mechanism, and is slow to trust.
Tumblr media
ORIANA ‘ORI’ LEE
You might know her as Oriana Lawson, but she’ll introduce herself as Ori Lee.
Ori is a warm, compassionate soul who loves to be around other people and enjoys her work as a colony developer/civil engineer for Kellam Industries. She is quick-witted and smart, and funny with it; her taste in fashion and makeup is impeccable, as is her comic timing.
She is very good at getting to know you, but you don’t get to know her. Ori keeps her cards to her chest, and only lets her guard down around people she trusts completely, and has a tendency to care too much about what others think about her.
Tumblr media
FISH (the cat)
Queen of everything, ruler of them all- well, maybe just Kolyat’s apartment for now.
Fish is a foul-tempered gremlin of a tabby cat, with white socks and a white belly. Her iron paw rules the roost of her home; she graciously lets others share it. Fish loves her food, her nap spots, and her soft piles of things to sleep on. She likes listening to music, and watching the traffic outside of her window.
She is a former stray with both PTSD and trust issues, and for this reason she lashes out without thinking, and needs her own space. When she trusts though, she really trusts. It will take her forever to do it, but once you win her heart, she’ll love you forever.
Tumblr media
BATESEDA ‘Bats’ T’LORI
The man, the myth, and the almost legend- at least, in his mind.
Bats was always told he had potential, and rather than stay with the Huntress squad who trained him, Bats left for the Citadel. He is a firecracker of a man who makes everything he does seem fun, always ready to crack something- a joke, his glass, a skull. Pour another one out, he has stories to tell, and they’re mostly true- if he remembers them right.
He has a tendency to go through frequent bed partners, and never keeps anyone around for long. Despite the crooked smile and easy living, there is an air of melancholy around Bats he is reluctant to explain, but something shows through the cracks every now and then. He will take things too far -the jokes, his drinking, his anger- and fall down the holes he put himself in. One day he will struggle to get back out of it.
Tumblr media
ARJUN PATEL
A man who borders the line between squad dad and gross uncle, Patel is a treasure for any crew to have.
Patel is content to stay in the background, and is more savvy than he lets on, willing to play the bumbling, easy-going fool if it’ll get him what he wants. He is essentially Columbo with a cooking habit, but is willing to share his snacks- if he likes you, and that doesn’t take much. He is a man with quiet passions, and they shine brightly when he gets talking; his food, his wife and daughter, his interest in history… ask him about them, and his enthusiasm will be boundless- much like his appetite.
He has a tendency to be lazy, if he can get away with it. Patel can also overspill the TMI details of his life even if you’ve heard them before, without a clue he’s crossed a line.
Tumblr media
SISO VITACUS
Like most of the squad, Vitacus came to the Citadel for a new life, and another shot of something. He recently split from his bootcamp boyfriend, and is really not looking for anything serious- at least, not at the moment. Vitacus is neither as funny as Bats, as serious as Kolyat or as happy as Patel, but he fits right in as the jack of all trades of the squad, content to play everyone’s middle man and all rounder.
He has a reputation for awful, neon suits, a love of dancing and shitty action movies, as well as a fondness for lurid drinks, despite looking like the kind of man who likes none of these things from first glance. Vitacus is a tall, stocky bruiser of a man, even for a turian.
Vitacus can also be a pushover and too laidback for his own good, and can drift along with the crowd than go against it. He’s unsure why he’s like this, but as far as he’s concerned, ending up in law enforcement is already an oddity- all his family are engineers and scientists.
Tumblr media
BRATHAN ‘Brath’ SEKET
If ever there was a man you were unsure of -even after knowing him for years- it’s Brath. The usual rags to riches story, heavy on the rags; Brath fled the grasp of his abusive family as soon as he was able to, taking on jobs across the Terminus until he built up enough of a reputation as a gun for hire.
He got his money from less than savoury sources to begin with, but absolutely no slavery. He has a personal honor code he will hold the rest of the galaxy to, even if you don’t know the rules. Brath might give off the appearance of loving luxuries and living well, but to him it’s just greasepaint and stage costumes; he’s learning that on the Citadel, a Terminus boy like him will never fit in, anyway- the four eyes see to that.
He will hold a grudge for decades, and it will smoulder, too. Brath can be incredibly petty and keep receipts, and if things don’t go his way, he will make them- for better or for worse.
LAETITIA PHALIA
A woman with a firm grip of the ins and outs of both her work and her neighbourhood, Phalia is the person to know when you need something, and if you don’t she’ll soon tell you, anyway.
She looks strict, but only when she needs to be. Phalia is just busy! There’s always some charity, pot luck, clawball practise, afterschool homework club, Galactic Scout cookie drive, donation pickup and volunteer work activity happening in her life. Phalia is always doing something, despite a full-time job and being a single parent. She gives and gives, because that’s what she expects people to do, the kind of person who will give you her coat and freeze.
There is only so much of herself she can give away. Phalia has had the very worst happen to her in her life, and she survives by constantly moving, not looking back. She just needs to remind herself from time to time she deserves to be taken care of too, and can rest every now and then. Sometimes Phalia also has a tendency to hold people to the same standards she has, but is getting better at learning the difference.
DEREK
It's Derek, innit? Just Derek. Not his real name of course, but he thought it sounded fancy. He has a full salarian name, but his clan mostly ignore his existence - except when they want money.
The eponymous Derek has a fairly sweet soul, but it’s one slowly corrupting under a mantle of the music industry and celebrity. He has an addict’s personality, and bounces from fixation from fixation- but music will always remain a constant. He is good at what he does too; his production skills are perceptively complicated, and he is an absolute master at looping and finding rich, interesting samples; there is a reason he is in demand both as a DJ and as a producer.
Derek doesn’t have the best social skills, despite befriending people easily. He’ll pick them up and drop them, and will often self-medicate his mistakes. His ego can get him into trouble too, but finding real friends -and not hangers on- will help him realise he’s not the centre of the universe.
- Payments will be made through PayPal invoices; I will ask for your Paypal info and will send you a request for payment that way.
- Once payment has been sent in full, I will begin the process of the commission. I will send a rough/process/concept sketch for approval before starting on the final version. (Of course, if you are buying a sketch commission, this will probably be it for the transaction.) This will give you the opportunity to correct anything before I finish the commission. If I fix the corrections and send the new rough sketch, and there are still things to tweak and fix, I have the right to up-charge on that due to the client being indecisive or not descriptive enough to help me complete their order.
- Side note, this is only likely if I’m asked to fix things over and over again, and if the changes are drastic.
- Again, no requesting anything from my “Will not draw” list. I have the right to refuse any sort of request I am uncomfortable with.
- I have rights to the piece, as it is my work. I am allowed to use it to promote my art as a portfolio piece or work example. I will most likely want to post it on my blog (if you post it on yours, please give me credit) and will @ you.
- If you’re not sure about anything, something is unclear, or if you have any further questions, feel free to shoot me a message!
If they are, you must message them a screenshot or picture showing proof of donation, along with any specifics you may want that they are willing to do.
Don’t be afraid to ask if they are willing to accept non-monetary efforts such as watching videos or signing petitions. THIS IS A SFW INITIATIVE. PLEASE, NO NSFW COMMISSIONS.
3)   Content creators will make their commissions and post them on Tumblr, tagging whomever requested the work if they want. Also available to content creators is the “Merlin Fans for Black Lives Matter” collection on Archive of Our Own that @arthurandhisswordbros was kind enough to make for our initiative. If you are able, feel free to share your works on that platform as well.
Please be advised... if this blows up, content creators reserve the right to turn down requests, as they may become overwhelmed by commissions. That said, it is important to communicate with them prior to donating. Should they become overwhelmed, content creators are encouraged to make a post on their blog saying that commissions are closed or paused, and can message me so I can update this post.
Our hashtag will be #Merlin fans for BLM. Please DO NOT use the #BLM or #Black Lives Matter hashtags, as that will oust the voices and messages that need to be spread and amplified on that tag.
Share this post, have the hard conversations about race and white privilege with those close to you, do your part to uplift black voices in any way you can, and PLEASE continue to educate yourselves on racial inequality and the struggle of people of color worldwide. Rewriting The CW's Kung Fu, Part 9: Reflections and Moving Forward
Tumblr media
And we have reached the end of our Kung Fu journey. If you haven't seen where we began, here's a handy guide to the previous posts:
Part 1: The Characters
Part 2: The Pilot
Part 3: The Mythology
Part 4: The Story Map
Part 5: Act I
Part 6: Act II
Part 7: Act III
Part 8: The Finale
Before I start with the lessons I learned and my other reflections, I want to thank @flailingbloo for all of her help and support in this endeavor. Without her to talk to and commiserate with, I would probably have gotten stuck in Act II forever and everything I've written would've been riddled with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. So my eternal gratitude to flailingbloo. And now, we begin:
Tumblr media
Lessons.
Going into this writing exercise, I already knew it was going to be hard. Writing stories is time-consuming, it's nerve-wracking, and it takes a lot of research...and patience. Writing, especially for television, is also not a solitary task. I mean, sure, the writing itself needs to be done alone--but everything that comes before, during, and after the writing needs input from so many people.
Although I have a lot (and I mean A LOT) of complaints about how The CW's Kung Fu was handled and written, I do have a lot of respect for the work that the writers put into their scripts. And I do appreciate all that they have done to have a show like this produced.
Doing this rewrite, I learned that it's really important to make the main character likeable. Like, every episode I broke down, I had to ask myself: is Nicky likeable here? Is she someone who viewers would want to root for? Like, for me she is, but only people who read what I wrote can say for sure. My perspective is now a bit skewered because I have bias.
Second, story maps are very helpful. There were times, especially during Part 6 (where I wrote breakdowns for Episodes 6 to 9) where I kept getting road-blocked by where I want the story to go. So I went back to the story map over and over again, to remind myself--where does the story itself need to go? How do I help the characters get to the point where they're ready for what needs to happen? (This is also where flailingbloo helped the most for me. Like, she really reminded me why I was doing this rewrite in the first place. Because I care about Nicky and the show. I wouldn't have funneled so much of my time and effort into this if I didn't.)
Another thing I learned, or rather re-learned, is the art of letting go. I created the character of Stanley to recur throughout the series as a reminder of who Nicky was and who she is becoming. And then I finished writing the first act without even mentioning him. By the second act, I was ready to use him finally--but, after multiple false starts, I realized Stanley was one of the reasons why I was having a hard time pushing Nicky's story forward. Because I kept trying to go back to the past. So I decided in the writing of the second act to shelve Stanley completely, only to find him popping up in the second to last episode in a, at least I hope, more organic way.
The last thing I learned in this exercise was that, whenever a new character needs to come in, I have to look at my existing characters first to see if any one of them can fulfill the role I needed for the story. Like, creating new villains for Nicky was fun, sure--but, at the same time, I realized that there were already existing villains that could recur. Like the Triad, who played villains in two more episodes after the pilot; and Henry's martial arts class at the community center became the source of two existing storylines from the actual show.
Tumblr media
Reflections.
Do I think what my rewrite is better than the show? To me, yes. But, again, I am very biased. That said, I am proud of how I utilized the characters that the show created and didn't really give much importance to. Dennis, when he was introduced, felt like a rich character that could provide a very different point-of-view from the Shen siblings--but he was mostly relegated to being eye-candy. And I thought I gave him more meat by making him more involved in Althea's sexual harassment storyline, while also involving him in Nicky's stories.
That said, I also realize that I wasn't able to play up Nicky and Evan's past relationship as I was writing the episodic breakdowns. I was able to give them a lot of opportunities to explore their chemistry together, as I did with Nicky and Henry, but I kind of dropped the ball as a writer on guiding those planted moments into something more significant. Granted, I only wrote breakdowns and not actual scripts. Maybe I could've explored the romance angle more with a little sprinkle of direction and dialogue.
As I went deeper into the rewrite, I do see how easy it is to fall in love with characters as you write them. It's very easy to trap yourself into wanting villains to be more well-rounded. I keep having to remind myself that I don't have to redeem everyone. Just Nicky. Which became harder and harder as I went further and further into the story.
Another thing that became difficult as I went on? Keeping the mythology from just bursting open. That's how Henry, as I wrote him, evolved into becoming the son of a guardian--just so there's a reason for him to be so invested in Nicky's quest, while also having someone who can explain things to our main character. I'm actually really proud of that evolution.
All that said, I also have to recognize that I rewrote the show with the benefit of hindsight and the lack of budget constraints. In the real show, there's a group of writers who each have their own ideas of what the show should be. (This is where a head writer--not a show runner--would come in handy, so they could reel in the story to what needs to be told.) With more writers comes more chances for inconsistencies to happen. (And this is where a script supervisor, or a writing assistant, could come in handy.) And then there's production notes and budget. Not to mention, you know, the whole pandemic that's still happening. I didn't have to think about those things while doing this rewrite.
So, again, I want to give the writers kudos to actually producing scripts. I hope they haven't lost their minds--or their will to write--just because there are people like me who nitpick at everything. That's what people who love things do. We nitpick because we care.
Tumblr media
Moving forward.
I do plan to stick with the real show for Season 2. I hope it's planned better. I hope they get researchers (plural!) and a writing assistant to help in the writing room. I hope the writers would sit down with the cast to discuss and develop the characters more. And I really hope they hire a better fight choreographer and fight director for the second season. (Like, rehire the people who choreographed and filmed the flashback scene in... Episode 11? The one with Nicky's maternal grandmother and Pei-Ling's own mother?)
I hope that the Nicky-Henry relationship gets explored realistically, and if a potential new love interest is ordered, they get introduced in a way that isn't antagonistic. Make them more well-rounded characters too, please. Make us want to root for their success. And while I think Nicky doesn't have an iota of chemistry with Evan, I do like Evan himself as a character. So I hope they get him more involved in future storylines--as an outsider looking in, sure, but also as an honorary member of the Shen family.
With regards to the Shen family, I do hope that we get to explore their relationships and dreams more before the show drops the reveal about Mei-Xue's daughter. I want Althea to have a cohesive storyline that doesn't pause for no reason. I want Ryan to explore being Asian AND gay as a first-generation Asian-American. And give the Shen siblings some recurring friends. They don't have to be semi-regulars (unless there's a story that can be explored) but let's not keep the Shens in a bubble. It was weird in the first season. Especially for Althea whose friends only showed up for her bachelorette party and never again. Not even when she was panicking about wedding preparations, which, considering how rich Dennis's parents were? They wouldn't let Althea be in charge of anything. They would hire a Chinese wedding coordinator. And an expensive and hard-to-book one at that. They donated an entire hospital wing, for crying out loud.
I want Jin to have an actual character, and not just be the supportive dad who loves his kids very much (admittedly my own rewrite also made this same mistake). And I want Mei-Li to be consistent as a character. Like, no more surprise twists about being the descendant of a legendary warrior without proper foreshadowing and plot-planting please.
Dennis shouldn't just be eye-candy. The same applies to Kerwin. Sure, I get that shirtless men are a must in a CW series, but please give their characters some meat too. Dennis's nerd-side was never showcased in the show, and Kerwin had that poor little rich boy background that didn't get explored either. Because the show was too busy keeping him and Zhi-Lan tearing each others' clothes off--when they're not tearing other people down.
Also, don't drop the ball on the tease that Bian-Ge is now everywhere. If I understood correctly, Bian-Ge is Kung Fu's version of Qi. If yes, then I hope they treat it respectfully as a force of nature--and not just the source of magic. The flowers from Bian-Ge itself can be magical, sure, I have no problem with a fictional flower being a McGuffin.
Finally, I hope the show also explores other Asian communities and cultures. Like, Kung Fu is great--but imagine if Nicky had to face someone who is versed in Silat Melayu? Or someone who uses Arnis? Someone who practices Kalaripayattu or Lathi Khela? Or Kuntao? Imagine Nicky having to use Wing Chun against someone who uses Karate or Krav-Maga? Asia is a big continent and there are so many different types of martial arts found from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. Kung-Fu is an umbrella term, so it'll be great to see the different styles found under it.
... This went long again. Sorry about that. Funny thing is, when I started this whole rewriting plan? I thought it would take three posts, tops. And look at us now. Nine posts deep, and it seems I still haven't run out of things to say. So I'm cutting myself off before I completely wear out my welcome.
But if you've read all my Kung Fu posts, please do reach out. Let's discuss the show and what it can do to produce a better second season.
Chapter One: A flash
Notes: This is a new DabiHawks thing im starting, and yes it will be ChildhoodFriends!AU because that is adorable, cannon can bite me :) Enjoy the story!
Warnings: Yelling, mention of death (not a character in the series), and mention of not eating food (skip this post if you need to, i promise its okay, be safe!)
this work is also posted to my Ao3!
Not many people know this, but Dabi loves to read. He almost always has a new book with him, he rips through them so quick. Ever since he was a little boy, he loved getting immersed into his favorite author’s universes. His favorite as a child were the Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. He always wondered what turkish delight tasted like and always checked every closet in his house every day as a child, just to see if maybe, just maybe... Nope, just mom’s coats.
He must have read that series a million times by the time he was eleven years old. His mother loved this about him, and she loved to ignite his fire for reading by suggesting new books and taking him to the book shop every other Sunday afternoon. Her favorite shop to take him to was called Philosopher’s Phosphor. It sold many books, old and new. The little shop also sold homemade jewelry by the two old women who ran the place who Dabi’s mother referred to as Janice and Edith.
The shop was always the perfect temperature, not too hot and not too cold. All around the shop there was comfortable seating. Pillows and blankets, books all over. Everyone who came it would always stay for at least an hour at a time, just sitting reading, and if you asked nicely, Janice loved brewing homemade tea, at no cost, of course. You could choose to sit and read every book in the shop if you wished, or you could buy and bring home the books, it was up to you. Janice and Edith would always accept any and all book donations, and always marked down their book prices so anyone could buy. And to answer your question, why of course all of the jewelry is handmade, beautifully made by Edith, they are having a sale, would you like this ring? It would match well with your beautiful skin tone.
Dabi loved asking the old women questions about books like, how were they made? How did they get to the shop? How did you pick which books to put on each shelf? However, his most common question was “what should i read next?” Which would lead to the two old women getting up and taking Dabi’s little hand through the warmly lit shop. They would show him to fantasies, mysteries, thrillers, adventures, and even some graphic novels. He loved everything the women showed him, he would always come back with his mother, every other Sunday without fail, to see the little old ladies that would show him a whole new universe to fall into.
They were always holding hands, and always so gentle to one another, as well as all of the customers, but... that was a long time ago. That shop was burned down, the old ladies aren't there anymore, and Dabi hasn't been to that shop in probably... how old was he again? He doesn't know. However, what he does know is that right now Shigaraki will not stop talking... as always.
“Well maybe he wouldn't have had to die if he didn't have had the audacity to be a little bitch!” Shigaraki’s voiced strained. Shigaraki was stood up, hands out stretched to really make his point. He was talking, of course, about a man he decided to murder on a whim just last night. It wasn’t apart of the mission, the man was just walking home, and the poor soul ended up accidentally bumping and slightly tripping the leader of the League of Villains.
“Tomura, he was crying because he was about to die, most people don't like the idea of dying. Shocker! I know...” Spinner rolled his eyes. He respected Shigaraki, but only because Stain did as well. This doesn't mean that Shigaraki cant get on his nerves sometimes. It bothered Spinner how easily Shigaraki could just up and kill someone for seemingly, no reason. If it wasn't for a good cause, if the person wasn't in your way, if the person wasn't the target, then what was the point of killing them? Its honestly just cruel, and in Spinner’s head, kind of disgusting.
Everyone in the League of Villains has, will, and would kill, but not all of them have the same boundaries or rules they go by. This can and has led to many arguments, just like the one that was about to ensue between Spinner and Shigaraki. As the voices of the Stain fanboy and Handyman began to rise, so did Dabi’s body from his stool at the bar. Dabi was sure that the argument wouldn’t end in a casualty so he didn’t have any need to be here.
Dabi hated yelling anyways, it always got on his nerves. Whether it be him yelling or someone else, he hated it. Not that he really could yell too much himself, his voice nowadays became hoarse and worn by simply talking too much. That's why his normal speaking voice was actually quite soft and generally pretty quiet. He didn’t mean for his voice to be that way, but years of smoking and over usage of his quirk kind of completely destroyed his vocal chords. Either way, he saw no point in yelling. You can get any point across just fine without yelling, sometimes you just need a weapon, but that of course depends on the person and situation he supposed.
The old floorboards in the back of the bar slowly creaked under each of Dabi’s steps. From the bar, there was a side door, which led to a hallway, which led to some stairs, which led to a basement living room, which led to everyone elses rooms. Well, at least the core members of the league’s rooms. It was nice, having a space for himself. The last time he had a room to himself was probably when he was still a little boy.
Dabi opened his bedroom door.
The whole house was very traditional, so in turn, so was his room. He didn't have many toys, so his favorite thing to do was play pretend with his brother and his sister. He would set up whole scenes with his siblings. Sometimes the scenes were from tv, and some were completely from his and his sibling’s imaginations.
His sister was always the doctor or the nurse, she loved Recovery Girl. In fact, Dabi remembers how every time Recovery Girl came on the news, she would always make a little squeal and her little feet would pitter patter in one place in excitement. He always found it funny how his brother ended up being the doctor in the family, now that they were older. His brother, meanwhile, loved being the villain. He loved making up a cool bad guy name and backstory, sometimes even costumes if Mom got involved. His brother would make up impossible, evil machines that could rearrange your guts or make you super tiny, or even super big! Dabi’s brother was always very creative.
This left Dabi playing the hero, and he loved it. He would put on a cape, and save mom from his brother’s evil clutches alongside his sister who would give him magic healing and strength “potions” that was actually just little jars filled with handsoap and sometimes random cleaning supplies that was on the cleaning lady’s supply cart. The chairs would become big rocks to jump from, the couch would become a “safe zone”, and the bathtub would become the ocean. The whole house morphed into their own imaginary world. It was wonderful, until...
Dabi’s room now was barren. It has a bed, a bookshelf and a desk. It’s all he really needed, he supposed. The shelf had three mystery books that he picked up on a mission a couple weeks ago. They were “okay” in his opinion. He hated how quickly he called the so-called “plot twists”,  but least the characters were somewhat entertaining. However, there was a slight romance in one of the books, which was very poorly written, it got to the point where he ended up just dropping the book entirely.
The book in his jacket was one of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, the book series was different from King’s other works in that it was less of a horror novel than it was an adventure series. It reminded him slightly of the books he read when he was younger. He used to prefer adventures and fantasy, but now that he was older, his favorite genre was mysteries. He did indulge in horror novels whenever he happened by one though, he liked a good thriller.
Turning on the light in his room, it gave off a dim light. He needed to change the blub, but he sure it would be fine for at least a little while. Then, it flickered, oh no... and then again, please dont... and finally, with a low buzz and a pop, the light was out.
“Fuck... okay.” he slowly murmured to himself. Slowly dragging his hand down his face in frustration.
He had no idea when he would be able to replace that lightbulb. He had no cash, and he knew for a fact that the league didn't just have some extra lightbulbs laying around, not to mention extra food.
Damn... his stomach rumbled slightly. Dabi doesn't remember the last time he ate an actual meal, and he doesn't want to remember either. So, since he couldn't get food now or for awhile, he decided to distract himself, as he always did.
Slowly he stalked over to the small window that peeked outside the base. The walls were tall and thick, and he was pretty sure he was the only one with a window downstairs, as tiny as it was. He slowly took off the little tapestry he had hung up to cover the window for privacy. Of course, he couldn't imagine any one peeking through a little basement window so low to the ground, but you never know. Also, Dabi quite enjoyed his privacy, thank you very much. The tapestry blended red, to purple, and then blue in the background with a black silhouette of a dolphin and waves in the foreground. It was an odd little thing, but Dabi enjoyed it nonetheless.
As he gently folded the tiny piece of fabric and set it on his desk, he looked back into his room. Surprisingly, that little window let in quite a bit of light. He silently thanked the window as he plopped down on to his mattress that laid on the ground. Then, he pulled out his book from his big inner pocket on his long jacket, and finally began to read, feeling the thoughts of food slowly drift from mind.
It could've been hours, minutes, or even seconds, Dabi doesn't really know, until he finally snapped his head up from his book and looked to the window. He quickly shot up and went up to the window. He looked left, and then right, and then over again. Huh... that's odd... he could’ve sworn he saw a flash of red right outside of his window.
Commission Update
(This is all directly from my commission page. Go look there if you want it to look prettier)
Hello, everyone!
I’m in kind of a tight spot for money right now (I usually am) and I’m really in need of some work. If you’d like some art done or would like to donate and get some art in return, here’s how to do so!
Here is a list of components you need to consider before sending a request. Once you’ve sent me your detailed request, I’ll get back to you with the price. There are some samples at the bottom of the post with prices on them that reflect what something of similar quality would cost.
.
Position  -  Standing/Sitting
Actions  -  Any interactions between people and other people or objects
Background  -  None/Simple/Nature/Furniture/Objects
Line Style  -  Messy/Clean sketch, Bold lines
Furries/anthros
Things you should include in your commission request
Contact info if you’re not on Tumblr 24/7 (Email, Discord, whatever it is that you check regularly)
A description of the piece you want
What each character included in the piece looks like (Detailed descriptions are fine if references aren’t available, but don’t blame me if they don’t look right)
Original character personality descriptions are very helpful, if you’d like to share. That way I can get a feel for who I’m drawing
Things you should keep in mind when commissioning me
I’m a spoonie so sometimes I don’t have much energy. Don’t expect your commission to be done in less than a week. I’ll tell you when you commission me if it will be longer than two for any reason.
The more familiar I am with the commissioned character(s), the faster I’m likely to get it done.
My drawings are my interpretations of characters. I’ll work with people to an extent if the characters are original, but I’m not going to tweak the same drawing a hundred times.
No, I will not do free drawings*. If I feel like doing something for free, I’ll announce it. I can’t afford that right now. If you want a really lame doodle, donate at least 50 cents and I might do it.
And most of all, I love every one of you! Thank you for looking into my commission prices. It means a lot. If you know anyone who likes to buy art, let them know I’m selling!
*Unless you want a frog drawn in mspaint. In that case, go request one at paintfroge
.
I take payment through PayPal and Ko-fi. Payment is due up front.
Please don’t send payment until I’ve accepted your commission. Payment sent for a commission I plan to decline will not be refunded, but you are free to choose something else for me to draw.
If you have any questions prior to your commission request, please let me know. I can provide more samples if you’d like to see more work like what you’re looking to order.
All rights to the commissioned drawing and the ability to post it online regardless of its contents remain mine. Any unoriginal characters or objects in the commissioned drawing will be credited to the original owner if posted online. The commissioner automatically has permission to post the commissioned drawing on any social media site they wish so long as they credit me and provide a link to one of my profiles online. This does not include sites like deviantART, Tumblr, Wysp, or any other creative platform where ownership is implied to the poster or where my art is already posted and readily shareable.
So Long and Thanks For All The Squares
Hello again everyone. I suppose it’s probably not too surprising, but this will probably be the final Project TUSSLE post. It’s been a long time coming, but I can say now that I’ve been officially scooped. Someone else is executing the TUSSLE concept better than I ever could, and I think it’s time to just let the professionals handle things from here on out.
I’m talking, of course, about Fraymakers, which, as of time of posting, has a little over a week left on its Kickstarter. Now, this isn’t the first “MUGEN but Smash Bros” concept to be pitched, but this is the one I feel could very well do it. McLeod Gaming has a very long history with Platform Fighting games, being the developers of Super Smash Flash,and their experience working in Flash’s ActionScript lends well towards making an extensible scripting language for the game to use. Not to mention the credibility they have from being in the indie space for so long getting the prolific guest characters they have so far. Full disclosure, I’ve actually sent emails out to a lot of these developers myself, but have received no responses from any of them. I don’t know how long Fraymakers negotiations have been in the works, but it’s possible this project’s been in the works for years already and I’ve been scooped for longer than I thought I was.
If you were excited for TUSSLE and haven’t already, I urge you to support Fraymakers, whether financially or just by getting involved in the community. I’m definitely going to be making tons of content for it when available, so there’s that to look forward to. The truth of the matter is that I just wasn’t good enough to make this a reality, and if you like the idea of TUSSLE at all, Fraymakers will likely be better than TUSSLE ever could have been, and if you were looking forward to something Fraymakers doesn’t do, chances are it was beyond my abilities anyway.
There have been many people attempting to help out with the project, but the truth is that I’m worse at project management than I am at development, and I could never give anyone enough tasks or direction to be able to make any manageable progress, despite that they were all very talented developers or content creators who were definitely up to the task. Still, in the process of working on this, I’ve drastically improved my abilities in both Python and Unity, as well as leadership, and I hope that my next project, whatever it might be, will be smoother than this one was.
This project’s been with me since before I graduated college, and stuck with me through some of the highest and lowest points of my life. It’s basically been a background process running in my brain. Every time I learned a new programming technique or design pattern I thought “How could I use this in TUSSLE?”, any time I played a new game or watched a show I thought “Could this character be a good TUSSLE fighter?”, I have dozens of notebooks with scribbles of UI mockups or pseudo-code algorithms, many of which are repeated or refined versions of older sketches. I’d go through phases of my life where I’d do nothing but code on TUSSLE all day, and phases where I wouldn’t touch it for months. To be honest, I’m kind of glad I’ll be getting all that mental real estate back not having to worry about it any more. I can dedicate myself to learning things unrelated to TUSSLE without feeling guilty about spending my mental energy on something else while people were eagerly awaiting updates. It’s helped me in my current job as well, a lot of the runtime importing code I’ve written for TUSSLE has actually wound up being used at my job to turn AutoCAD drawings of buildings into an explorable 3D environment in Unity. I’ve learned more about Unity UI than any human being has any right to know. I’ve met some incredibly talented people and watched them evolve into better artists, musicians, programmers, or modelers as they stopped by to give feedback or graciously donate their talents to this troubled project. I hope to see all of you succeed at whatever life throws at you.
Thank you, sincerely, everyone who has followed this project. You’ve given me something to anchor my life to for nearly a half-decade, and I don’t regret the time I’ve spent working on it. You’ve all seen this small indie project and decided to follow it and give your support, and that’s meant the world to me. I’m sorry I couldn’t deliver the project you were all hoping to play, but I hope you’ll all enjoy Fraymakers as much as I am going to, because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who makes the game or what it’s called, we all just want to play Project TUSSLE, and I’ll be right along there with you all.
Good Bye, digiholic
Seasonal depression is on its way back, so why not analyze another scene from Red Dead Depression 2???????
I’ve been meaning to do another screeching ramble about one of Red Dead Redemption 2′s many incredible scenes, but just couldn’t put my finger on which one. So I threw a rock and hit the Saint Denis bank robbery, that’s the story
strap in, motherfuckers, it’s time to regret the concept of empathy
Tumblr media
It is such a missed opportunity that we weren’t able to chaperone the girls as they went about putting on their various bullshit personas to gather reconnaissance. I want to see Tilly reading a newspaper with glasses, a fake nose and a mustache
Something Red Dead Redemption 2 spoiled me on is just how much ROI they squeeze into every last line of dialogue. Not a single word feels generic or hamfisted. Every sentence, every twitch and blink, adds up to a greater whole. The more I watch, the more I unearth. There are several AAA titles that frequently get painted with the ‘Good Dialogue’ brush like Uncharted that don’t hold a candle to Rockstar’s work here.
Take Hosea grilling Dutch here, for example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dutch acquiescing to Hosea’s justified criticism is depressing in its hindsight. Sir Spam der Linde is an arrogant blowhard that could give Dr. Gregory House a run for his money...and yet he still mumbles and bows his head when being told he needs to get his shit together. Compare this to earlier in the game, when he was snipping at both Hosea and Arthur for all their doubts and questions. Double that for the camp interactions you can find where Dutch and Hosea argue about the Blackwater Heist.
Is reality finally sinking in a little for our manic pixie dream man? Does he just have a hard time bullying Hosea, who’s around 5,000 years old and doesn’t give a fuck? For every answer you get, you get another question...and I fucking love it. This character -- and the series at large -- toes the razor-thin line between transparent portrayals and thicc layers of intrigue. This kind of carefully sewn subtlety is sorely lacking in not just videogames, but mainstream media in general. Sometimes I still can’t believe I got to experience this game.
This little scene is just one of many ingredients to make you wonder that, if the bank job had turned out all right...if Dutch really would’ve started changing for the better.
Tumblr media
Arthur clutching his belt buckle like he clutches my neck in my dreams
Tumblr media
So the plan is made and the cowboys are off to Sand Penis, and I bet nobody in the history of the world has made that joke before
Tumblr media
Just the build-up to the bank sends goosebumps up my arms.
Even with apprehension in the back of your mind, it’s hard not to get sucked into the whirlwind of adrenaline here. You have each member playing their part, from Abigail as the helpless damsel to Charles and Bill as crowd control. Great back-and-forth dialogue as characters anticipate what’s about to happen (with some delicious doubting from John). It’s like a group project, except you don’t want to slap your partners!!!*
*except micah ‘I Haven’t Scrubbed My Nailbeds In Fifty-Three Years’ bell
Tumblr media
Fun fact: if Dutch hadn’t said ‘one last time’, the bank robbery would’ve been a success. Should’ve browsed TVTropes.
Tumblr media
The direction of this game remains impeccable.
This is a simple shot of a few dudes riding their horse...and it’s made just that much grander by the camera angles, slung low to the ground to create a stronger sense of scale. With the tense drums in the backing track and the sudden quiet that’s befallen our beloved anti-heroes, this provides the perfect finishing touches to one of the most memorable and stressful parts of the game:
The runway.
Tumblr media
We start off this display of cowboy couture with Dutch Fam Der Linde, well-known in the West for wearing crushed velvet while hiking the open trail. Dashingly long coattails make up the bulk of this iconic look, with a sexy pop of red to round it all out. A complimentary red bandana lined with a hint of gold brings out the buttons, chain and belt buckle. Very regal. Much fucky. Still want to slap him for future crimes, so 9/10
Tumblr media
A surprising comeback from the man who invented skid marks. Lavender pinstripes add a splash of character on an otherwise minimalist black ensemble. Complimentary silver bow on the hat and dark bandana makes me uncomfortably wet, so 9.5/10, would leer again
Tumblr media
A classic suit with just a touch of more. A wide velvet collar with matching velvet cuffs create a refined softness, contrasting the gold buttons and dramatic coattails. Shoes shiny. Skin moisturized. Even his everyday ponytail looks fancier than ever. 15/10, if Javier kicked over my sandcastle I’d thank him
Tumblr media
What are those????????? I think Bill got pranked by Uncle while out shopping for robbery gear. That, or he confused one of Susan’s tablecloths for a three-piece. The topmost layer of dust is so thick it could be peeled off and donated to charity. 3/10, could probably still pass for a picnic table
Tumblr media
Shameless. Unacceptable. Walking around like a bootleg Egoraptor with a crinkly suit that looks like that oil-stained pizza napkin you keep forgetting to toss. Why did I take a screencap that makes it look like Dutch is jacking him off. Micah’s even jutting his beer gut out in an ominous foreshadowing for the Guarma chapter. ThereIsn’tANumberLowEnough/10
Tumblr media
Arthur strolling in with that slow, confident walk that gets me pregnant in both legs, someone please fetch the plan B
Dutch calls a Hosea an artist and is most certainly one himself. He speaks with the affect of a poet, even as he’s holding a pistol in people’s faces and making them shit themselves in slow-motion. This man redefines stage presence. Why would he want anything less than the best, when this is the final hurrah of his iconic, infamous career:
THE RUNWAY: PART TWO
Tumblr media
Bill out here just confusing everyone’s laundry for low-level loot. 5/10, may or may not be susan’s granny panties
Tumblr media
charles: “is my iron giant cosplay valid robbery wear”
dutch: “no, charles, iron giant cosplays are not valid robbery wear”
dutch: “gorons from legend of zelda aren’t valid either”
Tumblr media
JAVIER IF I GIVE YOU A 10/10 WILL YOU LEAVE
Tumblr media
Here’s a little detail I didn’t notice (even after several viewings of this scene): Charles over in the corner looking like a dweeb.
Notice how awkwardly he holds that rifle: two-handed and with his knees bent, suddenly looking like he’s never handled a weapon before. This is such an odd contrast from the unapologetic badass we know. Remember, this is the same man who can wield a sawed-off shotgun one-handed like it’s nothing. One of the most adept physical fighters in a gang full of cutthroat motherfuckers.
This detail on top of his dorky robbery gear? It’s actually a peek into just how out of his element he is.
Charles has been with the gang for less than a year at this point. Even then, he’s usually helping with tracking, hunting and scouting. Whenever he goes off with Arthur on a mission, he’s always the first to suggest a peaceful route. This is not someone who’s used to robbing people for a living and it shows in the most adorable way. What you see here is a man putting on a persona of what he hopes looks like a bloodthirsty robber.
Tumblr media
This whole scene is a fucking blast. Herding the upper-class elite into the far rom, figuring out the combination key under codenames, listening to the banter of the squad in the background. It doesn’t help I’m a slut for baroque-styled architecture and half my attention was on the pastel decor. Yeah, yeah, I know we have three thousand dollars on the line, but look at that gold filigree
These outlaws move like a finely oiled machine, not a detail out of place...which makes the ensuing mess all the more tragic.
...and this post is getting too long, so I’m going to post the second part separately. Ain’t I a stinker?
