TV Guide & TV Life, March 2024 Issues ft. Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger Main Cast Member Interviews (translations below)
TV Life 3/15 Issue, Publication: February 28, 2024
Iuchi: When you first heard the title, "Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger," were you surprised?
Suzuki: I said, "Huh?" in response. I also said "Is that true?" (laughs).
Hayama: For sure, I kept wondering what it meant (laughs).
Iuchi: Did it mean "to cheer up" or "the sound of a car's engine"? I wondered which one "Boonboom" was, but it ended up being a double meaning for both.
Hayama: It seems that "Explosive (Bakuage)" also incorporates the staff's desire to make Super Sentai even more "bakuage" than ever before.
Suzuki: It's upbeat and outlandish in a good way, and leaves an impact.
Saito: Other than the title, I was also surprised by the visual impact of Boonboomger.
Soma: They have tires on their faces.
Saito: These forms have a past, nostalgic feel to them. The more you look at them, the cooler they get.
Soma: When I see them fighting, I get alot more attached to them.
Saito: I think they'll be easier for children to draw pictures of.
Soma: I want them to draw alot.
Iuchi: Genba's hairstyle too. All you have to do is go around in circles a bunch.
Soma: No, no! My hair isn't yakisoba! (laughs).
Iuchi: When I was a kid, I liked miniature cars and played with them alot. However, I never really knew how cars were made. Taiya in particular is a master of development and modification, so I first made sure that I knew about cars, and then I'll try to make him look mature and calm as I play him.
Hayama: What I'm most conscious of, is being cool. I was told that "Red" and "Blue" have always appeared in every Super Sentai production. When I heard that, I felt more responsible. I want children to think that Boonboomger is cool even after they grow up. Especially since Ishiro is the coolest of cool, I try to be like that in the way he stands, and even in the way he speaks.
Suzuki: Mira is a bright, energetic, and innocent kid who enjoys everything. I try to be like Mira from the moment I enter the set. I also try to express myself clearly so that the viewers can understand what kind of emotions Mira is feeling when she speaks and moves.
Saito: Since Jou's a police officer, I started by researching the profession. I watched alot of footage and close up interviews at police academies and learned what it was like to be a police officer. While maintaining the seriousness of a police officer that I felt, at the same time, I want to show him as the cheerful and lively Jou that's eccentric when he needs to be.
Iuchi: Also, the angle of his salute.
Saito: Yeah. I'm careful about that too.
Iuchi: When I imitated it alittle, he said, "It's wrong!" (laughs).
Saito: There's a proper way of doing it. Such as it being with your right hand, not left.
Soma: Genba's rather mysterious and doesn't show his true feelings. He's a unique character that hasn't been seen before, so I try to play him freely without being restrained by anything. I try not to make it too elaborate. I think it'll make it feel more "Genba like."
Iuchi: All five of them are unique. Let's "bakuage" through the whole year so that as many people as possible can enjoy it! _
How would you describe yourself in terms of "Explosive(ly) XX"?
Iuchi Haruhi is: Explosively Stubborn It's fine to be particular, but I've been reminded to listen to the opinions of those around me. I think I've gotten alittle better at this compared to in the past. However, I'm still stubborn in some areas.
Hayama Yuki has: Explosively Long Legs All the small, medium and large sized pants at clothing stores are so long that they don't fit. I thought it was fine, since Ishiro often crosses his legs, which makes him stand out. I'm also prideful (laughs).
Suzuki Miu is: The Explosive Mother Everyone calls me "Mother" on set. This is because I'm the one who arranges everyone's shoes and puts away our lunch boxes. I'm Boonboomger's mama (laughs).
Saito Ryu is: Explosively Extreme I take what I like to do seriously, but I never do anything that I don't want to do. I'm either at 0 or 100. That's why I'm serious in some strange ways (laughs).
Soma Satoru is: Explosively Fun I love anything that's fun, and I like to enjoy everything, whether it's having fun at work or in my private life. I try to keep my spirits as high as possible.

Iuchi: When I heard that I was going to be apart of the Super Sentai series, my mind went completely blank. The first time I really felt it was at the introduction meeting. When I saw the documents on the desk, I thought, "Ah, so this isn't a joke" (laughs).
Hayama: Ever since I started acting, it's been my dream to be apart of the Super Sentai series, and this was the third time I auditioned for a role. I felt like I had taken the baton from the blue's of "Avataro Sentai Donbrothers" and "Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger", both of whom I know very well. If I was going to do it, I wanted to be blue, so when the decision was made, I immediately asked, "Which color?" and was very happy when they said blue.
Suzuki: I went to the audition thinking, "I'm definitely going to be picked," but when I was finally chosen, I felt a great sense of responsibility and pressure. I strongly felt that since my name would be etched into this historic series, I had to be prepared to take on the challenge.
Saito: I've admired heroes since I was a kid, and I entered the entertainment industry to be apart of the Super Sentai series, so I was very happy when I was chosen. When I put the suit on at costume fitting, I realized that I could finally become a real hero.
Suzuki: You say you entered the entertainment industry because of the Super Sentai series, but what will you do when this is over?
All: Are you going to disappear? (laughs)
Saito: No, the Super Sentai series was just my first goal.
Suzuki: It's a production you absolutely had to do. I'm glad (laughs).
Soma: I've had multiple auditions for the Super Sentai series, but this time I was chosen, so I was very happy. Just like Miu-chan said, I felt pressure behind this happiness. But, on the other hand, I hope to enjoy the pressure and do my best together with my wonderful friends.
Saito: Many of the recent Super Sentai's have a flashy look to them, but Boonboomger has an old fashioned coolness, it's as if, in a good way, we're back in the Showa era. It's very appealing.
Suzuki: Ryu-kun, you're always mentioning the names of various Super Sentai series.
Soma: He's the most knowledgeable out of all of us. He's the Sentai master! (laughs).
Saito: I'm from the "Engine Sentai Go-onger" generation, but thanks to the influence of my sister and mother, I've also seen some of the older ones.
Suzuki: When I heard the title, I thought it was an interesting one, but at the same time, I thought it would be an uplifting and upbeat work.
Iuchi: I'm very happy that I'll be involved in the memories of today's children through this production.
Soma: I think it's a production that focuses mainly on smaller children, so I hope alot of children will watch it.
Hayama: I didn't play with toy cars that much as a kid, but even I think it's cool to see singers turned actors appearing in dramas. Cars are a theme that's easily understood by smaller children, so I feel explosive (bakuage) every day when playing the role (laughs). _
Q: What's the moment when your mood explodes?
Iuchi: I like to write lyrics and compose music with my guitar as a hobby. When I think things like, "I've got the chorus" or, "I've finished a whole song," I feel an explosive sense of accomplishment. But, I haven't let people listen to it…(*The other members then say, "We want to listen to it!"), Well then, I'll play it for you sometime over the next year.
Hayama: I like to appreciate music as an art form, and I'll use music apps to play music randomly by genre depending on my mood. During that time, if I happen to land on a song that I like, at that moment, my mood rises dramatically.
Suzuki: I have the biggest blast when I eat ramen! I really like noodles, but I especially love ramen. Even when I'm exhausted after filming all day long, I've still got energy after eating some ramen. Truthfully, I post the ramen I eat on a secret account with zero followers that no one sees. I write my impressions of what I eat for my own record.
Saito: I like to do muscle training, and I get excited about it. I get more excited when I can actually see my muscles growing after my workout is over, rather than during it. I'll look in the mirror and be like, "Nice~ My muscles are growing~" (laughs).
Soma: I'm from Shizuoka, where I used to play soccer, so the moment I kick a ball is the best moment for me. When I'm playing soccer, I get the biggest rush out of it when I get to play the way I want to play and when punting the ball. It's a great feeling. I put all my stress into the ball…but, I don't have that much stress, so my plays are weak (laughs).

notes: a bday bby chose roommate!sae as bday fic so i gave her one. i too wrote this one sitting at 2 am. it was fun. little warning: a little suggestive at the end, but it's more of a wiener joke from a grade schooler more than anything as this is a romcom. there are obliviousness, pinning, allusion to your life being not the healthiest, and such as too, btw.

Becoming a roommate with Itoshi Sae was honestly a freak accident more than anything.
It was like as if some gods decided they were bored and decided, “Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if we stick some failgirl with the shining beacon, the prodigal mid-fielder of Japan?” And then they pulled up everything they got so it became an unavoidable hot mess. Unavoidable enough that Sae’s money couldn’t save him before pressing the two of you with various ridiculous out-of-this-world circumstances as the final nail in the coffin.
Looking back, it was honestly a premise for an absurd comedy that should have ended up with Sae murdering you in cold blood, in the most hilarious way possible. And then, he would cover up everything with his money.
Yet, lo and behold, Itoshi Sae—stable career, not a really good reputation due to his wording to the press sometimes, your roommate for three years and counting—was laying on your lap whilst scrolling through his phone.
And like a confused poor soul you were, you merely let him as how it had always been. Your focus was away from the TV you were supposed to be watching, but like some trained pet, your hand never failed to comb Sae’s hair gently every few minutes or so. It honestly never really hit you how domestic you were with him sometimes.
“Sae,” you said as you still could feel your brain slowly blanking out.
“What?” Sae asked without putting down his phone.
(He spared you a glance, but upon finding a dumb, flat look on your face, Sae decided to just wait for what sort of shit you would soon do. Judging by the unfocused gaze you still let linger on the screen, Sae knew this had something to do with him.)
“Uh,” you answered dumbly.
“What are we?” you wanted to ask. “Are you like this with everyone?” you wanted to ask too, but it was a very dumb question that would earn you a dirty look. “Are you secretly a cat boy?” you wanted to ask, though probably risking getting a silent treatment for a week was dumb.
“What’s for dinner?” was definitely not what you want to ask.
So, in the end, you said, “Isn’t it about time for dinner?”
You looked down and found Sae taking a moment to stop scrolling without putting down his phone. Clearly just finishing checking the clock displayed on the upper corner of his screen, Sae answered, “Five minutes.”
Most the times, you would reply with a whine saying you were hungry. Then, with a mean glare that never truly meant anything, Sae would follow.
This time, you merely hummed, “Sure.”
(Sae sent you a sharp look. You did not notice as you returned your attention back to your TV.)

Despite the cocky rich guy aura Itoshi Sae exudes, honestly he wasn’t a terrible roommate. Even you dare say that during the first weeks of sharing a roof with him, he would rather pretend you did not exist whenever he was home. He was not a messy guy and just a bit occasionally unreasonable.
Who were you kidding—he was unreasonable most of the time. Pretty hard headed, pretty prideful sometimes, and would not hesitate to scar you for life with his words. It was just after he started getting softer on you that discussion was possible in the first place.
(That discussion too was followed up with several unnecessary shopping sprees prompted by Sae. According to him, it was so his money would not rot off. Sae never told you it started up as a way to say ‘thanks for taking care of the chore and my stuff when I was gone that one time’ and somehow became a routine that sat snuggly in his schedule during off seasons.)
But, even as years and seasons passed, one rule persisted.
Never disturb Itoshi Sae’s nap time.
Sadly, that rule wasn’t exactly registered in your brain—as it just pulled a 21 hours work for a deadline.
That was why, the moment you entered the bedroom, you didn’t bother to check whose bedroom you entered as you threw your body to the bed. Not knowing, your action just jolted Sae awake.
“What the fuck?” Sae muttered, sounding more than a little pissed. He glared at you sharply with voice still heavy and hoarse. “The hell you are doing here?” he continued at you, who were burying your face on his pillows.
“Wha…?” you groggily turned your head towards him with much efforts. You couldn’t really muster the strength to do much, as you used what was left to plop on your stomach and stayed in a very awkward position with half of your feet out of the bed. But, it was Sae’s voice, so you tried.
When you saw him glaring at you, you tried not to groan and cry. Though, you supposed Sae caught that desire from your expression alone, as he said, “…did you just finished the deadline?”
“Uhum,” you answered, your cheek pressing itself to Sae’s pillow. Slowly, you could recognize his smell around you. It was comforting—perhaps after years of sharing a home, you had came to associate him with it. “Gim’me five minutes… just let me gather my shit together and I will be gone… soon,” you continued, drowsy. A part of you hoped Sae would be merciful enough to agree and kick you off his bed later, because you had no energy to get your phone and set a timer or to walk to your room.
(Sae watched as you slowly drift to your dreamland. Was it some years ago or someone else, he would have kicked you as hard as he could. Yet, it was you and a part of him wanted to flick you in the forehead or pulled your cheek or simply put the tips of his fingers on your heavy eyes.)
A few seconds passed and Sae finally let out a grumpy sigh. “Just sleep,” he said as you closed your eyes. You felt the bed shift as he threw his body back to bed. You chuckled silently and dreamt of him petting you in the head.
You woke up four hours later to a note saying Sae was off on an afternoon jog.

“Honestly,” you groaned, leaning against the shopping cart with an exaggerated pout that definitely annoyed Sae. “Why should I also eat healthily? You are the high profile athlete here. I’m just some lowly roommate.”
“Because we share a fridge, stupid,” Sae said while choosing between Lettuce A and Lettuce D. Lettuce C and B laid inside the cart, fresh and green, along with the things Sae had bought. You couldn’t understand what were the differences between them—but, hey, he was the more observant one between the two of you.
“Why don’t you buy another fridge then?” you asked, unironically starting to miss the days of instant food after living with him as afterwards it was filled with whatever his strict diet allow. When Sae didn’t even bother to grace you with even a disgusted look, you continued, “Or at least let me have some fries—”
Before you could finish, Sae threw both lettuces in his hands violently towards the cart. You winced for the lettuces’ sakes as you found him send you a look that was somehow angry and flat at the same time, “I’m not gonna let you eat fries and brag while I watch.”
“Even if I buy it with my own money?” you piped up with a small voice. Sae’s face somehow got even flatter and you gave up, “…fine.”
Sae hummed as he slightly pulled the cart towards his direction, indicating for you to push it and follow him. As the two of you walked, you could hear him continuing the previous unserious conversation, “You seriously need to learn to stop complaining about this.”
“This?” you prompted.
“Eating actual foods,” Sae answered. “Your life schedule would make some coaches cry by how messy it is. At least learn to eat properly.”
“Rude!” you protested. “I know my life is not as get together as yours, but it’s honest work, you know!”
“Work harder then,” Sae bluntly chided as he gave you a glance, his steps slowing down as the two of you reached the cashier.
You didn’t bother to check why he was stopping. Knowing him, he would buy you some low sugar candies as peace offerings for the previous argument. It was a habit that the both of you carried to give each other peace offerings after whatever disagreement, despite understanding on both side of how most of them were mere debates that exist to fill in the silence. You wouldn’t complain though—getting something or doing something for each other without a word was a nice thing in life anyway.
With that in mind, you let your mind wander to what sort of small thing you could do to Sae as your ‘peace offering’, not paying any attention to what he bought.
When Sae stepped beside you, you asked, “What did you get?”
Sae hummed, “Something to shut you up.”
You raised an eyebrow at that, “Huh?”
“Well,” Sae added an afterthought. “If I don’t read things wrong, that is.”
You didn’t really got it, nonetheless you still chuckled and gave him a light shove, “Sure, sure. As if the esteemed Itoshi Sae could be wrong.”
“Don’t start,” Sae responded dryly.
You merely smiled in silence and went back to your thoughts, waiting for the line.

My Favourite Japanese Children's Shows
My son is 3 and I have watched a lot of Japanese children's shows with him (screen time is family time!). Here are some of my faves and why. These shows are all from NHK E-TV. Would I recommend to use these for personal study? I am using them to help teach my son Japanese, and for this it works doubly well as I learn how children's society operates in Japan and how Japanese people learn Japanese as well as social etiquette. If you don't have a child, you might get bored easily from these as they are not designed with an adult audience in mind, and you can find much better resources online. You also need a subscription to NHK somehow to watch them, which could be difficult or costly to obtain overseas. However, I like the stories and the characters, as well as the little things I learn from watching them. If you are thinking of teaching your child Japanese this might be a useful resource.

いないいないばあっ! Inai inai baa! (Peek-a-boo!) This show is designed for very young children and features the beloved dog Wan Wan, played by the same actor since it first started airing in 1996. Wan Wan is accompanied by a young girl, played by various actresses in a succession over the year, and other fun characters. There is singing and make-believe and crafts, as well as short segments featuring nature (animals, plants) or short animations. It's very slow as it is made for infants and toddlers, but that makes it very cute. A group of specially selected young toddlers appears for the dances and songs. Why I Like It: The animation is fun and visually appealing, the activities are play based and you can do them at home, and you learn some new vocabulary. おかあさんといっしょ Okaasan to issho (With Mother) This show is designed to be watched with mom (it comes on in the mornings and evenings on NHK E-TV). There are a male and female singing talent, and a male and female athletic talent, who participate in singing and acting clips. There are also a group of costumed characters that have a short story that is continued each week. It has a variety of songs, short skits, a collection of human and costumed actors, and a predictable flow that changes slightly based on the day of the week (e.g. teeth brushing days, story days, etc.). It also shows real kids doing real activities, which kids like to watch. Why I Like It: The songs are easy and catchy, the stories are easy to follow and the words are spoken clearly and precisely. アンパンマン Anpanman (Anpanman) This cartoon is a long running cartoon for children (since 1988!) with an incredible line of every toy imaginable to supplement your love for the red-bean bun man (anpan = red bean bun pastry). The story lines are simple and predictable, there are a variety of "fairy" characters that are composed of different Japanese food items, plants, utensils, and animals; and in the end the villains are just really hungry. Anpanman works to help people who are in trouble or hungry (sometimes even the villains), or being bullied by the hungry villains and the story always ends well. Why I Like It: The plot is easy to follow and you can learn about Japanese food and drink specialties via the endless supply of characters, and the songs are catchy. ピタゴラスイッチ Pitagora Suicchi (Pythagora Switch) Pythagora Switch is a 15-minute long show involving devices (Pythagora Switch) that are equivalent to the American Rube Goldberg machine and the British Heath Robinson contraption - basically, a sequence of events made from household objects that end with (usually) the words ピタゴラスイッチ being revealed. The idea is to encourage children to augment their way of thinking and to solve or understand what the machine will do before they see the movements happen. There are also other segments in which mechanisms are explained and shown visually. And usually there is rock-paper-scissors via a Pythagora Switch where you work out what the device will throw and try to beat it! The language in this show is more complicated because it is geared to a wider, older audience. Why I Like It: It helps me to think and enthralls my son with the moving parts. French Girly (フレンチガーリー) is a substyle of Japanese girly kei fashion as well as an aesthetic created by and popular among young women in Japan. It is an elegant and feminine aesthetic that utilizes imagery associated with antique French Haussmann architecture and material culture, combined with whimsical and kawaii details. This type of fashion is largely inspired by luxury brands and prep, but takes on an extremely girly look that is fairly unique to Japanese culture. French Girly is also based on the clothing of various small brands which gained notoriety for creating and catering to this aesthetic, largely by the brand Épine.

The aesthetic closely follows parisian fashion while also incorporating Japanese influence. The fashion style itself focuses on elegance and femininity, including colors like tan, black, white, gold, and pink. Outfits can consist of:

Various Anime Boys: Being Told "I love you" For the First Time (Part 3!)

Tomura Shigaraki
“Ugh, I’m not a baby. You go on to bed. I gotta get to level 60.” Tomura whined, grumbling as he thumbed at his controller.
“You’re gonna collapse from exhaustion, Tomu.” You replied, folding your arms.
The villain snorted, his eyes still fixed on the television screen. An RPG was what he was playing, of course. One of his favourites. “You sound like Kurogiri.”
With a huff, you walked over to him and maneuvered yourself into his lap, wrapping your arms and legs around him. He grunted and muttered a few choice words as you did so, but didn’t push you away. He readjusted himself and then continued to play his game.
“…You’re so clingy, you know that, right?” Tomura stated, his eyes narrowing.
“Mhmm. I know.” You replied. “If you aren’t gonna come to bed and cuddle me then I guess I should just cuddle you here.”
“You’re just gonna fall asleep and I’m gonna have to carry you to bed eventually.” He sighed, shivering a little as you nuzzled at his shoulder. “Fuck, I lost.” He grumbled, pursing his chapped lips.
“You’ll get it next time, Tomu.” You assured, running your hands along his back slowly.
“You’re distracting me.”
“Oh am I? The greatest villain in all of Japan getting distracted by little old me?” You batted your eyes at him playfully.
“Shut up,” He said back, but there was no malice in his voice. A small amount of pink had crept into his cheeks. You both fell into a comfortable silence then, the only sound being the effects coming from Tomura’s video game.
A few minutes passed like that until you murmured, “Tomu.”
“Hm.”
“I love you, I hope you know that.”
The ‘Game Over’ sound rang out from the TV. He had stopped playing, sitting stiffly after you said that. A part of him thought he had misheard you. How, how could you love someone like him? You were an angel to him, so kind and patient and caring…you wanted what was best for him.
“Tomu?” You asked, looking up at him.
He glanced back down at you before sighing, finally wrapping his arms around you and letting go of the controller. “Dunno how.” He uttered at last, but then pressed a gentle kiss to your head. “…I love you too, weirdo. Now let’s go to bed.”

Yuuji Itadori
Watching movies with Yuuji was something that never got old, he always made it an event with you. Fridays were designated movie nights, and he went all out, every single time. Yuuji would go buy snacks, rent multiple movies, and set up a pillow fort, each and every time. You didn’t have to lift a single finger.
“C’mon, Y/N! It’s movie night!” He called to you, dragging you by the hand into the basement. Your heart melted at the sight of all the effort he had gone to just to make this a fun evening for you both. As you two snuggled up together under the pillow fort, which was smaller than usual (so you two were smooshed up against each other). Of course, one of the movies HAD to feature Jennifer Lawrence.
You rested your head against Yuuji’s chest, hearing his heart beat soundly in his chest. He had a wide, peaceful smile on his face, his eyes fixed on the screen. And you didn’t notice how his gazes lingered on you, how his smile grew wider when you were around, how he laughed harder when he was near you.
The movie ended and you made to get up and put the next one into the DVD player, but Yuuji grumbled and held you tightly to him. “No, not yet.” He said softly. “S’cold without you.”
“Yuuji…”
“Please?” He looked at you with his patented puppy dog eyes, a small pout forming on his lips.
“Okay.” You conceded, lying back down beside him. He nuzzled into your hair, closing his eyes.
A wave of emotion came over you suddenly. You didn’t want anybody else to see him like this, to hold him like this. Before you could think, you said: “Yuuji, I love you.”
His eyes snapped open and he lifted his head, his eyebrows rising. “Huh? Did I hear that right? You mean it??”
You blushed, nodding. “Mhmm. I’ve loved you for a long time and…I don’t know, I guess I just can’t hold it in any longer.”
His lips spread into a giddy, happy grin, his arms snaking around you and pulling you close to him again. His lips brushed your forehead as he muttered back, “I love you, too, Y/N. I always have.”

Shoto Todoroki
“I’m sorry about that whole…thing,” Shoto said quietly as he walked you home. You had been invited by Fuyumi to have dinner with the Todorokis, and it had not been a very pleasant event. Endeavour wasn’t exactly the most welcoming toward you, seeing his son’s interest in you. He didn’t think you’d be a good match, considering your quirk was not something that he considered to be powerful.
“It’s okay, Sho.” You tried to assure him, giving him a wary smile. “Your sister is an amazing cook, and Natsuo’s so funny!” You attempted to assuage his worries, purposely avoiding mentioning his father.
Shoto glanced at you, his hands in his pockets. “My dad, though…”
“Like I said, it’s fine, Sho.”
“No it isn’t. It isn’t fine to me. I won’t have him trying to control who I spend time with, especially when he doesn’t even know you.” He looked down at his shoes, “He doesn’t know how wonderful you are.”
You felt heat creep up into your cheeks at that statement as you two rounded the corner to your street. “Here, it’s dark. Hold my hand,” Shoto offered, taking your hand in his. You were on his hot side, so his palm and fingers were warm to the touch. But his grip was soft and gentle.
You walked a few houses down until you reached your door. Stopping out front, Shoto reluctantly let go of your hand, watching as you got out your house keys.
“Um…I’ll see you later, then, Y/N. I’m sorry again.” He turned, making to head off into the night.
“Wait, Sho?”
He paused, turning back to look at you.
You smiled, “I love you.”
His eyes widened, a heavy blush spreading across his cheeks. He didn’t even realize that he was walking toward you until you were right in front of him and his lips were on yours. To see his family, to not be afraid of what his father had to say, to still love him regardless…he couldn’t let you go, now.
Breaking the kiss at last, he smiled tenderly at you. “I love you, too.”

Katsuki Bakugou
"Stupid dumbass idiot extras don't know a good fuckin' hero when they see one." Katuski grumbled as he walked into your room. He was still decked out in his hero gear, though he was a bit scuffed up. You were perched on your bed, eyebrows rising as he flopped down on a nearby chair.
"I take it the rescue didn't go all that well?" You asked, canting your head.
"Nah, it went fine. We saved everyone, but of course shitty Deku and Icy Hot got all the admiration n' credit. Everyone keeps sayin' I'm too fuckin' aggressive or something." He huffed, throwing off his gauntlets.
"Really? You're too aggressive?" You asked sarcastically, resting your cheek in your hand.
"Shut up, dumbass." He barked back quickly. "M'not in the mood for your attitude."
"Katsuki...do you ever think that maybe hero work isn't always about being admired or fawned over? D'ya think maybe that it's actually about SAVING people?" You rolled off your bed, going to stand beside him.
He didn't say anything back.
You sighed, shoulders slumping. "Why are you even here, Kats? You have your own dorm room."
"...Wanted to fuckin' see you."
You put your hand to his forehead. "Hmm, are you feeling alright? Did I just hear that correctly? You wanted to see me?"
"Don't make me say it again, dumbass." He snapped, swatting your hand away.
You knelt down, your expression softening as you removed his eye mask. "For the record, I think you're a great hero, Kats." You told him, smiling.
"You're just sayin' that." He grumbled in reply, but the slightest tinge of pink was in his cheeks.
"No, I mean it," You said.
"You don't have to put up with my shit, y'know," He said suddenly, looking down. "I dunno why you stick around with me."
"Because I love you, Kats." You replied quickly, not realizing that you had just admitted your feelings for him.
He blinked at you, his red eyes wide. "What the fuck did you just say?!"
"I--uhhh..." You went scarlet and swallowed, your mouth dry suddenly. You didn't get much of a chance to say anything further, because Katsuki grabbed your face and pulled you into a tender (but a bit rough) kiss.
"Wha..." You gasped when you broke away.
He rolled his eyes. "...Damn, I love you, too, stupid." His words were harsh, but his voice was soft and the tips of his ears were red. "Though I wish you woulda waited until I wasn't a fuckin' mess to tell me."

I have not watched the previous series or OL movie, but I come to you after learning that EarthMix will cameo in this week's episode. I'm watching older Thai BLs to learn more about that nation's genre of BL, and I'm learning about the Thai genre's Japanese BL roots -- which makes the cameo extra sweet for me in my history project. In any case, I am wondering if you could offer a kind of overview of the importance of the Ossan's Love franchise in Japan. My very favorite BL of all time is Kinou Nani Tabeta? -- and I've been so thrilled over the years to get TWO seasons, a movie, and the New Year's special. Ossan's Love has even more content. Would you say it's a bigger BL than KNT? Is the audience for OL growing actively in Japan? I'd love to learn more about the context of its importance in the Japanese media landscape. I feel like I generally have a grip on these things in part due to the fame of the various actors that end up in BLs (like in Cherry Magic), but Ossan's Love has been around for so long, that I'm not sure how to quite contextualize its popularity against other JBLs. I don't want to make any claims on who's more popular without gathering actual data, but I can talk about the general context of the show.
OL actually precedes Nanitabe's live action, so they weren't in competition during their original airing. OL differs from most other bl live action outputs by being an original script. It's not based on a manga unlike pretty much all other Japanese bls out there, and as such, it pretty much single-handedly brought gay relationships to the mainstream when they had so far been mostly confined to the bookshop bl section: if you wanted to read a bl, you'd go to the bl section, but otherwise you wouldn't be exposed to it.
The first season of OL aired in 2018. There are all kinds of live action bls airing these days, at least one per season, but it wasn't like that back in 2018. Live action bl until recently was either typical age-gap uke/seme anime (Gravitation, Sekai ichi hatsukoi, Junjou romantica) or made-for-dvd movies with mostly unknown actors. My first bl movie was Ai no kotodama. I don't know who those actors were or where they are now. By comparison, the cast of OL is full of popular mainstream actors. Pretty sure at least one person fainted when Tanaka Kei was on the cover of An an's love & sex (was it me, you'll never know!).
Even now, at lot of the bl you'll find on Gaga or Viki actual airs in a specific bl slot or on a paid subscription service. You had to buy each episode of Old fashion cupcake on Rakuten to watch - meaning you need to already know what you're looking for. Nanitabe and Cherry Magic both aired in TV Tokyo's Friday midnight slot , but TV Tokyo is a local network. I had to watch both online because we don't get TV Tokyo in the prefectures. What we do get though is TV Asahi, the network producing OL. It's one of the major national networks and the second most viewed channel after Nippon TV (it's also the channel buying GMMTV shows for Japanese distribution).
What made OL such a phenomenon was the internet and social media. It was the most tweeted show in 2018 and Japanese people tweet a lot. It received the Popular Word of the Year Award. You read it right, Ossan's Love was the Popular Word of the Year 2018 with #MeToo and e-sports (for comparison: in 2022 one of the words was state funeral because of Abe's assassination, and one of last year's winners was boiling of the planet).
As for how OL Returns is doing - it's super successful! Last Friday even omutsu paatonaa/diaper partner was trending on the internet. Last time there was an update about viewership, the first two episodes had been viewed 4.5 million times. The Japanese fandom is super active, and people of all ages are watching. They're doing quite a bit of promo, too. Tanaka Kei & Hayashi Kento were on Geinoujin kakuzuke check, a popular new year's quiz show.
I know OL doesn't get a lot of love in western bl fandom. On one hand, I'm like huh okay fair enough. But on the other, much bigger, you could even say enormous, hand, I'm like you don't have all the facts! You don't even speak Japanese! Take a seat! But if you wanna trash the airline remake (was it really necessary???), I'll bring the snacks.

Interviews Regarding 456, and the possibility of AAI ports and AA7.
Recently, a bunch of interviews with the producer of the upcoming Ace Attorney 456 collection, Kenichi Hashimoto, have been released. Most of these are in Japanese, discussing various elements of the upcoming ports, including new features like the Orchestra Hall and Story Mode, but a few bring up some interesting future directions for the series, including the possibility of an AA4 anime or live-action drama, AAI2 ports, and AA7. As well, some discuss the influence of overseas sales on the current direction of the series.
**Please keep in mind that most of these interviews (with one exception) were originally in Japanese, and translated with google translate (with some possibly inaccurate modifications by me). As a result, the validity of the translation may be unreliable.**

Most of this is of course corporate speak of not being able to confirm or deny anything, but this is the closest we've gotten to confirmation that AAI2 might be localized so far. As well, it does sound like the series is doing well, particularly overseas, which is encouraging for people hoping for more. It definitely doesn't sound like they think the series is dead yet!

Dear Brother (Oniisama e…) LaserDisc scans and machine translations

These past few years I have fallen in love with the work of director Osamu Dezaki. Alongside Tomorrow’s Joe (Ashita no Joe), I hold Dear Brother in the highest regard.
It was a 1991 anime based on Riyoko Ikeda’s 1974 manga. You should watch the anime. It’s on Tubi for free. But really, just trust me. Buy the Blu-Ray from Discotek.

This anime came and went. There isn’t any merchandise besides some phone cards. Decaying fan sites and discourse is out there, but it’s a bit of a hunt.
Some time ago I saw a fan letter written by Hideaki Anno, apparently from the LaserDisc releases. From what I could tell, the LaserDisc packaging featured a treasure trove of notes from the staff that I just had to read. But I couldn’t find them!
If you’re not aware, LaserDiscs are one step above burnable trash in Japan — often on sale for 200 yen or less in heavy boxes shoved into the corner of second-hand anime stores. So I bought all five volumes of the 1993 Dear Brother LaserDisc release, was thrilled to notice unique letters from staff and industry luminaries in the interiors, and I scanned everything! And machine translated them.
I hope this (long, comprehensive) post brings fans of Dear Brother the same pleasure it brought me to compose it!
Note: I cannot read Japanese. I’ve used Google Lens for OCR, and GPT-4 for translation. My scans are good (and you can get them on Archive.org in high res) but these translations are not archive-quality and should not be depended on without verification. I’ve done my best to make corrections and have attempted to wrangle the correct tone and meaning out of the AI, but they’re essentially just for fun. Each disc is themed after a character and colour. The back is peppered with screencaps and notable quotes (“Anata wa dare?” says little Nanako) as well as series credits. The two notable parts to translate are the disc synopsis, and the subheading (seen here in pink on the far left.) Maybe it’s a pull quote? Not really. So I called it a subheading.

An “obi” (sash that covers the spine) is included. Of course, it says “My tears won’t stop!” in huge text, sells it as the latest Dezaki/Sugino collaboration, and describes it as tanibi na sekai — a poetic concept of a romantic, sublime world of aesthetic beauty.
There are two paper inserts in each volume. The first one looks like this, and is an index of LaserDisc chapter markers based not on plot developments, but notable character quotes.

I haven’t translated episode synopses, but I’ve attempted to translate both the staff letter and the “letter to dear brother” from someone external to the production. There’s a bio for each author.
Volume One’s “From the staff to all the fans”
Bio:
Osamu Dezaki Joined Mushi Production in 1963. After directing series like “Astro Boy” and “Goku’s Great Adventure,” he was selected as the general director for “Tomorrow’s Joe” in 1970 at the young age of 26. Born on November 18, 1943, and hailing from Tokyo, he has received high praise as a director. Subsequently, he has brought numerous masterpieces into the world, including “Aim for the Ace!”, “The Adventures of Ganba,” “Nobody’s Boy,” “Treasure Island,” “The Rose of Versailles,” “Space Adventure Cobra,” “BB,” and more. He is also referred to as “Sakimakura” and “Mataba Sakimakura.”

This is my second time working on Ikeda-san’s work since “The Rose of Versailles.” Her works have a unique aroma, whether you call it a theme or a world. They seem to pursue the literary aspect of the story. When I read the original work of “Dear Brother,” I was very drawn to these aspects, and at the same time, I felt a sense of anticipation that it would be difficult, but perhaps various images could be created. It’s not just about being cool or intense; it’s about creating images that resonate more and more with people’s hearts. Fundamentally, there is an original story, but when the characters start to move, and each begins to live, the story could go anywhere. I always had that sense of tension. So, rather than sticking to the original work, I placed more emphasis on the directorial focus of the reality of the characters who had started to move. As for the techniques, it was not something I was particularly conscious of, but I used a lot of completely black shots simply because I honestly felt they needed to be black. Whether or not it was successful, I wanted to effectively overlap the visuals with the characters’ psychology by delivering such physiological shocks. The psychological fluctuations of the people are indeed the overall aroma of this work. Mutsumi Inomata Born on December 23 in Kanagawa Prefecture. After working with Ashi Production and Kaname Production, she is currently freelance. After going through Ashi Production and Kaname Production, she is now a freelance artist. Mutsumi Inomata is her real name. She was born on December 23 in Kanagawa Prefecture. She is active in both the fields of anime character design and illustration. In the realm of animation, she served as the character designer and chief animation director for works such as “Plawres Sanshiro” and “Genmu Senki Leda,” and as the character designer for “Future GPX Cyber Formula.” As an illustrator, she has also provided numerous illustrations for novels, including titles like “Prince of the Universe,” “Dragon Quest,” and “Continent of the Wind.”

Comics are way hard to translate without actually knowing Japanese. Here’s my best effort to uncover some meaning.
For several years, I had stopped watching anime and stuff… Living a hectic life, it’s been like this for a while now. Having a set day and a set time to watch a specific program (not just limited to anime), had become impossible for me. Recording videos is also a hassle, and first and foremost, I just don’t feel that “I must watch the next episode!” kind of emotion anymore. Ah well, I was thinking maybe I’ve just become an adult. Heh heh heh. I’m such an idiot. No, that’s not it.
The blonde guy in the bottom-right is labeled as her friend, and she’s saying something about “Poupee-chan”. I think in the second panel he’s yelling saying “But that doll is supposed to be a girl!”
The final monologue starts with:
By the way, I have a container for “dangerous items” at the corner of my work desk. I keep things like cutter blades in it, so that I don’t accidentally drop them on the floor and cut myself or something. The “dangerous items” container I’m using now has a sticker with Saint-Just-sama’s “Nanako’s Eyes,” heh heh heh ♡
That’s about all there is to note about Volume One, besides the fact it comes with an enormous poster (it’s the same art used on the cover of the Discotek Blu-Ray.)

Volume Two Synopsis
Nanako’s life at school, after being chosen as a sorority member, was not all glitz and glamour. There were misunderstandings with her best friend Tomiko, and jealousy and slander from other students, including Misaki Aya. And then there was the obsessive love from her fellow sorority member, Nobuo Mariko. “What is a sorority? Is it really that important?” Nanako began to question the very existence of sororities. Yet, she tries to look straight into herself, even while confused. Always before her were the mysteriously beautiful and shining eyes of Saint-Just. Drawn to those eyes that seemed to peer into a distant past, Nanako attempts to uncover their secret. Then, by chance, she finds out about the special relationship between Fukiko and Saint-Just. Could it be that Miya-sama and Saint-Just-sama are…? The complicated interplay of relationships and the previously enigmatic characters start to become a little clearer in “Volume 2: The Chapter of Freezing Rain.” The subtle breaths of the people surrounding Nanako can be heard.

Hideo Takayashiki Born in 1947, native of Iwate Prefecture. After passing through Osamu Tezuka’s Mushi Production, became a scenario writer. Also worked on numerous TV anime scripts like “Gutsy Frog”, “Gamba’s Adventure”, and “Tomorrow’s Joe”. Another piece directed by Osamu Dezaki and supervised by Akio Sugino has become a permanent edition (converted to LaserDisc)! (Hooray!) From the anime “Ashita no Joe” (1), the unique and beautiful way of life portrayed in anime is so intense that it has consistently given us dreams, hopes, despair, loneliness, friendship, love, perseverance, and revival! These works have even surpassed the original works in the emotional impact of their final episodes. I continue to be captivated by the atmosphere conveyed by these works. The reason I enjoy drawing the final episodes of my own works is entirely due to Director Dezaki’s influence! When I heard that this work was going to be turned into an anime, I was shocked. I’d known about the series since its serialization, so my reaction was something like, “What!? Are they really going to do it!? And on NHK of all places!?” Expanding on the original work and filling in the parts that hadn’t been depicted was incredibly challenging, but also enjoyable. What surprised me was that, around the midpoint, the characters started to assert themselves, taking actions that were entirely different from what I had planned. The princess would say, “My pride isn’t so easily swayed,” San Just would insist, “I’m not going to commit suicide,” and even the older sisters of the sorority were like, “We can’t back down now.” Every time this happened, I had to rework the composition. This phenomenon of “characters moving on their own accord” was a first for me in an anime series, and it was an incredibly fresh and pleasant experience. That being said, it’s rare to be so emotionally invested in characters while working, to the point of even role-playing their lines. To be honest, this was a work that got my inner anime fan excited. Ah, I want to do work like this again!

I’ve worked quite a bit with Music Director Seiji Suzuki in the past. Suzuki gives me the music menu, and I’m the one who creates it. We’ve had some pretty detailed discussions about it. Of course, I’ve read the original work as well. When I read it at home, my daughter gives me a puzzled look, as if to say my interests have changed quite a bit (laughs). I think I wrote around 40 songs in total. The music is meant to have a Baroque sound while also feeling contemporary. The order was for something classical yet with a pop atmosphere. The image that immediately came to my mind was a rhythm section, with a harpsichord playing the melody. String instruments intricately marking the rhythm, much like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. And on top of that, a flugelhorn playing the melody… Regarding the scenes where the piano is played, I played all of it myself. I often compose and perform my own pieces. It’s less about talent and more like playing two roles; maybe I contribute quite a bit to cost-saving (laughs). In any case, this work has a unique atmosphere. Amazing, this is really amazing!! Yes. Especially the heartbreaking breakdown of Nobuo’s family, and the portrayal of the sorority’s downfall reminiscent of the French Revolution, are things that are indescribable with words. Yes. The highlights this time are– Brilliant! Highly sophisticated direction and high-quality animation in Episode 27! Tear-jerking! In Episode 28, Mr. Nobuo Hikawa’s soul-stirring outcry!! His sudden death plunges many people, including Nanako, into the depths of sorrow. Among them, Kaoru, who is battling cancer and fearful of its recurrence, takes the news of Saint-Just’s death most seriously. She finds comfort in the warmth of Takahiko Henmi, but continues to stubbornly refuse his love, thinking about his future. As one who has journeyed far from that radiant chapter called youth, a time that shone with an almost awkward brilliance, I find myself in a peculiar blend of bewilderment and nostalgia. A masterpiece infused with the creator’s soul. When I heard from the staff that “Oniisama e…” was getting the anime treatment on satellite TV, I was surprised. I’d delved into the original comic before and it’s quite an eccentric story. “How are they going to pull this off?” I thought. But learning that the script was in the capable hands of my acquaintance Tomoko Konparu, I was very excited. In fact, the anime that aired was genuinely captivating. The characters are so larger-than-life that they electrify the screen the moment they step into frame. It’s been a long time since an anime had that kind of presence. I believe the animation is done by the same people who worked on “Tomorrow’s Joe 2.” The scenes are so visceral that you can almost feel the punches land and see the fighters hit the mat. I kept asking myself, “Why isn”t a mouthpiece flying out?” (laughs) My favorite character in the work is Nobuo Mariko. The scenes where she bites her lip until it turns a flushed red, I find it really cute. But what blew me away was the show’s emotional intelligence. Just when the heroine seems on the brink of breaking, a lifeline is thrown her way. This nuanced touch prevents the darker, more harrowing elements from overwhelming the viewer. It’s as if you can feel the sincerity of the creator throughout the piece.

Iuchi Haruhi plays the role of Taiya Hando (BoonRed) in "Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger." We asked the 19 year old about his enthusiasm for playing the lead role in the historic Super Sentai series.
"How did you feel when it was decided that you had been chosen to appear in the show?"
Iuchi: I went to the office after I received a call from my manager saying, "I'd like for us to talk face to face," and while making small talk, he suddenly said, "You've been chosen to appear as Red in the new Sentai." It didn't seem real at first, it felt as if I was listening to the decision that my friend had been picked, and that I wasn't involved. I played multiple roles at the audition, not just Red, so it didn't really feel as if I had been chosen as Red.
"What kind of character is Taiya Hando, who you were chosen to play?"
Iuchi: He's a genius in development and modification, is wealthy, and has a passionate heart but doesn't show it. Boonboomger is initially made up of three members, Red, Blue and Pink, but he's the most mentally mature out of all of them. However, I couldn't express it well at first, as Director Nakazawa Shojiro, who was in charge of episodes 1-3, always just told me to, "Up your mentally. Be less childish." I have the image that he's 5 years older than my actual age. It's difficult, but I think I'm gradually becoming able to express this, and I get the feeling that I'm starting to grasp Taiya's character of being "calm but not cool."
"Please tell us your impressions of BoonRed's design, Taiya's form after transforming."
Iuchi: I thought, "They're going with this, huh?" (laughs). I kept thinking about the tires being stuck on the front of the face. There's been Sentai with car motifs in the past, but these designs are way different from those, so it leaves an impact.
"What are some memorable moments from the episodes that have been filmed so far?"
Iuchi: We've had clear weather since filming began, but on the day when all five members of Boonboomger assemble for the first time, it snowed and filming had to stop. While we were waiting, everyone played around and made snowmen.
"For the next year, you'll be playing the role of a hero."
Iuchi: I talked with Mori Hirotsugu-san, BoonRed's Suit Actor, and asked him to show me the poses he does in action scenes, which I would recreate, and I also asked Mori-san to do the poses that I came up with to match the dialogue. I'd like to continue to work together to create the hero named Taiya Hando. I want to do my best so that children who watch the show will think, "The Boonboomger's are my heroes." _
-What are the conditions for being a hero?- Iuchi: Yuuri-san and Eve-san (singers) are the ones who have my back. Whenever I feel like I'm lacking confidence and want to give up, I listen to their music and become encouraged. For me, the conditions for being a hero are……I guess it's to never ask for anything in return.

The Ice casting decision reeks of misogyny. It's doubly disappointing as a Japanese ice show considering just how good/deep their women's field is. Kaori not only being reigning world champion, but having made history with it just so recently, rubs salt even further into the wound. Makes me wonder if they're falling into the same thing I keep seeing posted on various platforms of the women's field being "not interesting" anymore - various arguments around this statement.
No matter the reasoning, it's extremely disappointing. Especially with just how they openly stated it to, though I guess it doesn't leave anyone wondering just how intentional it was to have them all left out.
Thank you for your thoughts! This probably serves as an answer for my poll. I am still using this to comment on some of your thoughts under the cut and share some additional points from my view.
The decision of an all male cast is strange and uncalled for especially considering their deep field of women. I really wonder what lead to that final decision. I totally get the disappointment and anger even if I like most skaters that are announced for the show. But tbh from my point of view Japan has a lot of mysoginistics way of thinking instilled in their culture, so internalized mysoginy may have played a part, even if probably or hopefully nobody went like "we hate women, so we don't want them". From the reaction by Japanese fans I came across the criticism wasn't as negative as the reaction from the English fandom. In the end the Japanese fans buy the tickets.
We can't tell if the producers buy into the "women skating is not interesting anymore" or if they have other reasons. There is not any justifiable reasons to exclude women single skaters imo! One thought appeared on my mind though: from my outside observation the Japanese single women skaters do not have the same "superstar" status as the male skaters in Japan and maybe that plays a part why they are deemed by producers as "not a selling point"???After Mao Asada no other female Japanese skater got as much attention. It's a shame especially as Kaori has three world titles now! She deserves so much better. All of the Japanese ladies deserve better in general! (Though the women discipline is popular with tv ratings in Japan yet I don't see the same hype around the women skaters as male skaters in the fandom and fans will attend shows not casual tv watchers. Again just an outsiders observation of the Japanese fandom, so by no means any sort of factbased.)
I also think it's maybe in Japan but to me it doesn't feel like a Japanese ice show, bc besides Kao and Shoma and Satoko if you can even count her as she isn't perfoming apparently (that's the wildest point imo to have Satoko and not have her skate 💀) there are not many Japanese skaters announced and I mean the men field in Japan is deep too. So when all male, where are they? Where is Sota, Yuma, Kazuki, Koshiro??? I mean Nika Egadze a stronger selling point than any of them? 🙃
Many things are worth criticizing but the transparancy of the "concept" is not a negative point for me. Transparancy is always good, even if it's not transparent about the reasons for an all male cast. It's better to sell tickets when ppl know what to expect than to let ppl buy tickets blindly expecting certain skaters that then would not fit their concept. They did try to sell tickets last year before anyone was announced and that seemed to have sparked criticism inside Japan, maybe a reason why there is a complete annoucement about their casting decisions, even if it wasn't a decision anyone asked for.
Maybe this decision for an all male cast is also just a promotion stunt. Whether we like it or not, it was a "hot topic" today in the fandom and trended on Jpn Twt.
Whatever lead to that decision I feel like one thing is clear looking at SOI (a show that has the same producer) that new concepts for ice shows are needed. As much as I hate the "empty seats" discussion, shows don't sell as strongly as they used to, not even in Japan (unless it's Yuzu's show but then it's also focused on a male skater and on one skater only). They need new concepts and I am not against having a new concept, but the big question is whether that new concept had to EXCLUDE women single skaters performing???? Absolutely not.
Only time will tell if their "concept" will get ppl interested to buy tickets or turned off. We'll find out in July. And frankly in the end our view doesn't matter much as the majority of us won't be the target audience for this show.

Anime recs for The Radiant Emperor enjoyers
I was watching the new Ooku anime on Netflix some weeks ago and I thought it hit that ”court drama dealing with gender roles and making me cry” spot that He Who Drowned the World has been occupying in my heart lately (even if it engages with some of these themes very differently).
Somehow that got me thinking about other anime that might align with the vibes and themes in The Radiant Emperor book series and eventually came up with this list.
Some of those themes include gender roles, queerness, disability, politics, oppression, rebellion, revenge, impossible and messy relationships and tragedy. Darker themes like war, violence, sexual assault etc are also often present. Please lmk if you agree or disagree with these choices and feel free to add more!

Historical fantasy based on Osamu Tezuka’s manga classic from the 1960s.
An orphan who hides her gender in order to survive meets a young man who fights demons to claim back his body parts that his father traded away in a demonic pact. There’s tons of pain and tough moral questions and complicated family relationships, and the way Hyakkimaru deals with having lost and then slowly regaining parts of himself is super interesting.

The story also hits different when you know that Heike monogatari was traditionally performed by blind musicians and singers.

Alternate history where most men in Japan have been wiped out by a mysterious disease. Very much a court drama centered in the Tokugawa shogun’s residence where men serve the woman shogun as concubines (and sometimes have relationships with each other). Also, one of the main characters is a monk who ends up giving up his vows! Based on Fumi Yoshinaga’s acclaimed manga that has also been adapted to various live action movies and drama series.

Scifi classic with two main characters who are at the opposing sides but feel inexplicably connected. There’s just so many insane relationships and emotions here, I still have not recovered from the ”I want to kill you but I will also protect you with my own life” thing…… Based on the 1970s manga by Keiko Takemiya. Not to be confused with the movie from 1980.

Devilman Crybaby (2018)
Apocalyptic fantasy with demons and stuff. Based on the classic 1970s manga by Go Nagai.
I don’t even know how to describe the story, it’s just the tragedy, the queer yearning, the ”I killed the one I loved and then it was too late”, the ”things will get bad and then they will get worse” vibe that I think is very fitting. This one has the most extreme violent and sexual content out of the series on this list.

Gang wars, mystery drugs and complicated emotions set in New York. Based on the iconic 1980s manga by Akemi Yoshida. Deals heavily with trauma and CSA.
You guessed right, this one is also a tragedy. If you love Ouyang and/or Baoxiang, you’re probably going to love Lee Yut-Lung. That’s all I’m going to say.

Basically how this works is, that you can vote for three of the Riders or Forms of your choice. Let's use Wizard as an example, you can vote for Land, Water, and Hurricane forms for Wizard, it's not just limited to Riders.

Doing a short analysis of the desert in Mahiru's MV. ~🍰
I haven't seen anyone talking about why they chose this particular cake, so because I was bored and I love sweets, I decided to do some research and I think I found some interesting details. ~🍓
Due to the amount of frosting and strawberries, I think there is no doubt that this is a strawberry shortcake.

In Japan, this cake is very popular, especially during Christmas, which here it's not considered as a religious holiday, not even a national one! Christmas is celebrated more like Valentine's day.
Of course, I don't necessary think that Mahiru's MV happens during winter or something, but it shows that this cake represents love, prosperity, themes frequently seen in her song.
But i don't want to just talk about the cake itself, but also the main fruit that composes it - strawberries. 🍓
This fruit is a really interesting one, and I really think that it gives us more insight of Mahiru's character and maybe her relationship with her boyfriend.
~Meaning~
Strawberry represents a delicate symbol of love and it is often used to show romantic desire or attraction. It can also be a symbol of righteousness, purity, perfectionism and modesty.
I think this fruit shows the ideal relationship that Mahiru wants, the characteristics that composes her love for her bf.
Righteousness and purity - Mahiru aspires for an innocent love, a cute, happy one. Her MV's are usually energetic and very aesthetic when it comes for the moments with him.
Perfectionism - I have always perceived Mahiru as being quite a perfectionist when it comes to love. She admits that her favorite hobbies are watching dramas, reading magazines. Consuming a certain type of entertainment, raises your standards and changes your perspectives about different topics. Mahiru describes her younger self as being a "sheltered girl" and in contrast with the fact that she went to an all girls school, it strengthened the desire to experience true love. She wanted her relationship to be the same as in dramas. In these TV series, to increase suspense and tension, the partners experience various quarrels, misunderstandings and breakups, which are fortifying their bound, until they reach their happy ever after. And these things are shown in both MVs. Mahiru admits that she is testing him, she is "happy" to receive this pain that occurs after a breakup. "The breakup rituals" in her point of view are strengthening their relationship and as the time goes on she believes they are closer to their happy ever after. Which in her case, it doesn't really happen.

Modesty - Mahiru has actually very simple wishes when it comes to love. She wants loyalty, the interrogation questions demonstrating that she dislikes cheating and finds it morally wrong.

Mahiru just wants a person who accepts her love, someone who can appreciates her for who she is.

~Beliefs~

The sequences with the cake are interesting... Maybe I'm overthinking, because they aren't literally splitting the fruit, but I want to point this detail:

The bf's slice is small, while Mahiru's filled with a lot of frosting and the whole strawberry. It seems like the bf wasn't as involved in the relationship as Mahiru and that this relationship was bound to fail from the start... Mahiru's love could have been too overbearing for him, resulting in him wanting to end ties with her. It's really sad from both perspectives... While I understand Mahiru and the feeling of wanting to be loved and having someone that understands you, he wasn't the perfect match for her, and neither she was for him. Both had different perspectives of love and neither of them had filled their requirements and needs...
->If you dream about eating a strawberry it could mean that you are about to witness a wedding. Dreams where someone else is eating a strawberry are often interpreted as meaning the dreamer has strong romantic attraction for the person cosuming the food.
Now, I know this seems like a scretch, but to be honest i always perceve the MV's as dreams. I imagine the prisoners sleeping during the extraction and while the machines is doing it's work, they have visions with their crime.
Anyway, Mahiru is trying to make her bf eat that slice with the strawberry, basically she is giving him her love. Unfortunately, he refuses to eat it, he is refusing her love and we see this scene from his point of view:

A rotten love, it's the best I can describe it. Mahiru is forcing her love and feelings to him, who doesn't want to receive them anymore.
And a note for the wedding part: Mahiru always wanted to marry the person she loves. In the MV she is never seen eating the strawberry.
"What's your opinion on marriage?"
Mahiru: "It's something I really dream of."
->Entire strawberry plants were used to treat drepression and melancholy.
Another interesting fact indeed.
This can also refer to Mahiru's mental state, which is deteriorating in Milgram's prison, but maybe it can also refer to her bf as well?
The first part of MV... The lyrics are quite sad and depressing.
"Sigh... No appetite, I can't sleep,
my hair's a mess
What am I supposed to do now?
If you won't tell me, I can't be me"
Considering that he ended his life, this shows that he was in a very bad state of mind, so Mahiru trying to give him the strawberry could mean that she wanted to help him, to cheer him up. An act that doesn't help and does more damage...
Also, the lyric were it says that she doesn't have appetite... The only food shown is the strawberry shortcake, and as the fact tells.. It's like she doesn't feel worthy of this "treatment" to cure her own sadness... :(
If I find more interesting things, I will probably continue. I'm not very pround of this, but I think it highlighted a few details.~🍰🍓

Ochako will be the most popular pro hero out there?
I have seen a lot of people predict and write fan fictions where Uraraka is often depicted as an underdog and not as popular as her other fellow hero classmates. If Deku is no #01, she is #20 or something and she's usually very insecure about her weight, chubby figure, and personality and has low self esteem in general, which is kinda weird if you look at all the canon material we have...
From the get go, it is implied that Uraraka is strong, not just physically but mentally.
She is supposed to be the Ultimate Hero that will surpass All Might in terms of both power and influence she has on the mass of people.

She made it to the top 3 in the practical exams of UA entrance test and secured a position in the top 16 in the sports fest.
She might not be a prodigy like Bakugo or Todoroki, and she might not have All Might's legacy either but she is a strong hero in her own right.
In fact, from her internship with Gunheads to joining Team Ryukyu, she did it all on her own merit.

She managed to go toe to toe against Bakugo, who was the winner of the entire sports fest!
Plus, the strength and mental fortitude she showcased in the sports fest, helped her gain offers from various agencies, something that even Momo wasn't able to secure, because she hardly did anything against Tokoyami in their match.

I'm not saying that Momo's quirk is not powerful. In fact it's quite the opposite but it more or less depends upon how a person uses it.
Just like how Toga used Ochako's Quirk to kill numerous villains in one go, while Ochako resolved to not let a single person drop to their deaths and led her to her quirk Awakening.
And this takes me to my next point. Why wouldn't the golden girl Uravity be popular?

Plus, she's really pretty. Have I already mentioned in one of my blogs that Ochako is canonically one of the prettiest girls of class 1a? Her name literally means 'a beautiful day' and 'green tea girl'. Horikoshi himself leaves no opportunity to beautify her and he even considered himself a genius when he came up with her name!
So, she's not just strong but also beautiful.
So with all that being said, I don't know what people writing these fanfics are thinking?
