A Hannigram fic made me pick teaching as a profession. I don't know how to leave. I only wanted the scholarly aesthetic of Hannibal Lecter, not to actually check math papers.
i always wonder if there was any fic that actually changed the course of someone’s life

Do ya'll ever think about how every character in MDZS is living in a radically different genre of story?
Cause yeah, sure Wei Wuxian is living in a danmei fantasy novel with strong romantic comedy elements, but if you slide over a bit Lan Wangji is living a serious and heady drama about regret, loss, yearning, the passage of time, and ultimately atonement.
Scooch on over to Xichen and your in a straight up Greek tragedy, right down to the parable about hubris and trust. Jin Guangyao is living meanwhile in a political dark fantasy al'la Game of Thrones, Nie Huaisang is in a Gothic moody Monte Cristo-esque reflection on revenge and deception, and while Lan Sizhuhi and Jin Ling are living in two VERY different YA fantasy books ('magic boarding school/secret orphan of destiny' and 'Steven Universe style coming of age/discovering all your family are some flavor of evil and magic' respectively).
Everyone connected to Yi City is living inside a dark psychological thriller/horror flick, except for Xue Yang who is in a Found Family/Enemies to Lover fic right up until he isn't.
Jiang Cheng's entire life has been one long soap opera, and it is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.

This is what I've been thinking. Being a bystander during the entire ordeal must have been crazy. Just imagine being Lan Jingyi seeing all of these unfold right in front of your very innocent eyes, but that's okay because you're not involved in this drama in any degree... then later on your best friend starts going on family trips with THE GHOST GENERAL because apparently he's the LAST LIVING WEN!!! But that's okay because Hanguang-Jun is still here in the cloud recesses as a teacher BUT SO IS THE YILLING PATRIARCH! Teaching your class some dark arts defense.
the lan disciples simply saw hanguang-jun, the epitome of righteousness and the king of blank expressions, pick a random gay demonic cultivator one day and let him tag along on his adventures only for them to get married later because, yeah, that’s the yiling patriarch, in fact, why nobody told me my idol had a situationship with the biggest badass villain in history??
why is this twink ordering me around?? and then they follow wei wuxian’s orders like fools anyway. what do you mean THE hanguang-jun loves THE yiling patriarch? it must be like discovering an aloof prince had an affair with an infamous big rockstar back in the day, idk. that’s crazy funny for me, to be honest i’d go insane

I'm seeing a lot of fics with title "Home is where the heart is", and it's usually fluff, sometimes painful angst but with a happy ending. Overall, fics with this title are warm.
What if there is a fic with this title... But it's from NBC Hannibal Fandom. And the house is a mansionette in Florence Italy. We see a happy family, Will Graham, Hannibal Lecter, and a girl named Abigail Hobbs. Abigail is in college, Will is a fisherman, and Hannibal Lecter is a professor and a museum curator. They eat together, shop together, dine out with laughters from Abigail's college adventures. Beautiful beautiful family.
But behind closed doors, there is tension. There is anxiety. Will Graham is constantly anxious of Hannibal. Scared when he is going to kill them and make them tonight's dinner. He's scared for his daughter, who is obviously a hostage for his obedience. "As long as I behave, play house with Dr. Lecter, my daughter will live." Hannibal Lecter is depressed of Will's acting, he really thought they would be family, but he realized Will is just behaving for survival's sake. He loves Will, he truly does, but the man never felt it. He still think of him as a monster. Abigail Hobbs is fine. Except that she's not Abigail Hobbs. Her parents were murdered and became lasagna for acting 'uncivilized' in the museum once. Her father shouting that he doesn't get the arts, and her mother laughing loudly at the nude portraits of Persephone. She doesn't want to be lasagna, so she must act civilized, accept that her name from now on is Abigail Hobbs, and be a perfect daughter for man named Will Graham to adore. They're better than her parents anyway. She just needs to play house. It's easy! She's fine! Fine. Fine. Fine.

Maybe that's why I encapsulated my mind with her works, to the point that I cannot consume anything else. For a moment, I believed in a world where romance is for devotion, and if it is anything but, then romance shouldn't exist at all.
I think I completely forgot that cheating and love triangles as a trope exist because why was I taken aback watching thai bls after binging all of mxtx’s works for the past few months. She really said y’all can have death or the entire world come between you but it sure as hell won’t be another man.

I read somewhere that The Gusu Lan's simplicity in terms of fashion sense is often overlooked, as it reflects their discipline and resolve towards cultivation. But then I also noticed that YunmengJiang's flashy purples are often overlooked, too. Like, my man Jiang Cheng is the most well-dressed man out there, and Jiang Yanli was always Aesthetic Goals TM. Wei Wuxian may be in his simple blacks and reds, but compared to other sect robes, I find his robes elegant and fashionable.
Although in terms of flashiness, Lanling Jin clan may be the winner, but I find their robes tasteless, with their brand logo in front, like rich people who wear bad fashion as long as the prints louis vuitton or chanel are visible.
But Yunmeng Jiang? *Chef's Kiss* All adaptations understood the assignment that this is the kind of family that supports all the local tailor shops. Each sibling has their own shop because one shop cannot accommodate their NEEEEEED for fashion robes. Meanwhile, Lan Wangji has been wearing the same robes since he was 18. He probably only has two sets that he washes everyday. Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng:

Imagine if you are friendless and you feel socially unimportant as a doctor, you will join an antivaxx group because then people will always reference you like "hey look he's a doctor and he's with us! Tell us your expertise, king!" And will suddenly feel the center of attention, dude they sad sad af that they will break oaths and be the cause of the deaths of innocent children.
Plenty of highly intelligent people end up getting sucked in to cults because they just wanted people to hang out with. There are antivaxxer nurses. Your ability to act on empirical reason breaks down fast if your social and emotional needs aren't being met.

I suggest an easier way.
Character 1: Jin Ling's uncle (the gay one)
Character 2: Jin Ling's uncle (the gayer one)
Character 3: Jin Ling's uncle (tragic and canon gay)
Character 4: Jin Ling's uncle (evil gay)
Character 5: Jin Ling's uncle (the virgin one)
... and so on. You get the idea
The titles I gave mdzs characters while I was explaining the story (mainly 3zun side) to my 16 yo cousin:
Wei Wuxian: Main Character
Lan Zhan: Lover
Jiang Cheng: Younger Brother
Jin Zixuan: Half-Brother
Jin Guangyao: Bad Guy
Nie Mingjue: Bestie
Lan Xichen: Good guy
Nie Huaisang: Mastermind
Jin Ling: Orphan
Her reactions were priceless 🤣
"Wait, so why did Younger Brother and Bad Guy raise Orphan together🤨??"
"Mastermind really said 'wrong bitch, get messed with'🤭"
"Half-Brother was the only good one, he should have just like, killed everyone else and been happy with his family"
"Eyooo, Bestie really said best friends foreveeer🤪 in a coffin💀"
"Good guy is dumb, like, literally kill yourself"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN BAD GUY BUILT AN ELEVATOR NO WAY"

💠💙how does one begin
By:Shializaro
Summary:
If the love of your life jumps off a cliff after fighting alone against an army, do you jump, too? Yes, Lan Wangji decides. Wei Wuxian and his experimental time travel talisman vehemently disagree with that course of action.
As usual, nobody has told Jiang Cheng anything. All he knows is this: On their way to receive indoctrination in the Cloud Recesses, his brother starts acting weird, and he is going to find out why. Also, if the Second Jade of Lan doesn't get the hell out of his way, he's going to start throwing fists.

💠💙something true or nothing
By:Shializaro
Summary:
Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian have tumbled off the cliff in Nevernight and back through time, and all Lan Wangji can feel is relief. He does not especially care what that looks like from the outside.
Lan Xichen tries to be a good big brother. So when Wangji exhibits strange behaviours such as getting into fights and abducting guest disciples, he is naturally concerned.

💠💙Come Back to Me
By:s6115
Summary:
“Second Young Master!” Jiang Cheng, rushing forward. “Unhand our disciple now!”
“You-“ Lan Zhan said. But the confusion was starting to become more prominent, showing in how he flexed his knuckles, adjust his grip.
“You,” Wei Wuxian said. "Do you remember me?”
Lan Zhan froze. So that was a no, he didn’t remember. His fingers adjusted again, completely ignoring Jiang Cheng as his shoulders were pummeled. If it was anyone else, they’d be asking a thousand questions. Wei Wuxian could see some of them in his eyes. Who are you was the first. Why do I feel like this was the second. That just made Wei Wuxian so curious, as well. Why was Lan Zhan so emotional (in his blank-faced way) if he didn’t remember?
The resentful energy had swallowed Wei Wuxian whole, but it had only grazed Lan Zhan’s hand. Was it possible he remembered the emotions, but not the memories themselves? Did he remember feeling their friendship, as fractured as it was, but not everything else?
AKA Wei Ying traveled back in time, and it seems Lan Zhan's emotions did, too.

Others would say "hur dur Akashi wouldn't be late he's so punctual and he's a perfectionist" literally his first appearance in the Winter Cup, he called the GoM and then he was the last to appear, even Aomine mentioned he was taking too long. And for what? I dunno, maybe he just wants to be a gremlin and assert dominance. Annoying little muppet

Question: What are the societal positions of the cultivation clans in MDZS world building?
Are they the major government? Are they the emperors? What kind of governing bodies are they? They have rules and laws, but I don't see them being actively political, or having direct political influence over their turfs.
Are they the church? I mean, they solve problems pertaining to spirits and zombies and disturbances in the spiritual world, so they are like temple managers and clerics? They don't have any mentions of gods, tho. They just cultivate like Buddhist monks, and WWX was particular on calling XXC as Taoist, but that is the only mention of religion we had from the novel.
Are they non-government organizations? They could just be random clans who developed cultivation methods specific to their culture and terrain and livelihood, with goals to aid the mortal world with problems pertaining to spirits. They are separate from the government, tho there were no signs of politics in the world building.
Are they feudal clans? And some clans just have cultivation talents. Because it was shown that Mo Clan is a powerful governing clan, though they're not cultivators. So we can assume that they're just random powerful families, some families can be powerful enough to build cultivation schools and be trusted institutions, like how some families can build foundations that normal people can avail help from?
Or are they the police?
I'm not sure, but in my head, they lean more towards being Buddhist Temples, and China was in a setting where the Church is also the Government.

This got me thinking honestly, how Nie Huaisang managed to convince Mo Xuanyu to do the ritual, like, it could go like this...
NHS: You must summon the Yiling Patriarch to kill them, though your soul will be sacrificed for it. 😈
MXY: I mean, I do want revenge, but to lose my soul in the process??? And to call THE Yiling Patriarch for that? I'm an experienced cultivator from Jin Clan, I have a well-developed golden core, plus I practice a bit of dark arts for studying Wei Wuxian's notes, I could really kill them right now.
NHS: ...

HOW THE WHOLE "COME BACK TO GUSU WITH ME" THING WENT IN MY HEAD
Lan Wangji: Wei Ying, come back to Gusu with me. 😔
Wei Wuxian: You would deny me my life? 😠
Lan Wangji: No, no, not your life, no 😟😢
Wei Wuxian: My freedom then, you would take that from me. Confine me to a prison cell. 😡
Lan Wangji: 🥺 🥺 🥺
*13 Years Later*
Lan Xichen: My mom was a murderer, so my dad married her to save her from persecution, and built a hall up the mountains to keep her and they together went into seclusion. Sounds familiar? *Randomly plays flute* 🎷😌🎶
Wei Wuxian: ...
Wei Wuxian: Oh my god, he did want to confine me.
Lan Xichen: Don't put it like that, I think it's romantic.
Wei Wuxian: ...
Wei Wuxian: You Lans are somehow not right in the head.

It's crazy how the juniors just accepted Mo Xuanyu after a few times of meeting him. In their eyes, Mo Xuanyu has this bad reputation (though I'm still not sure if they were true, or made up rumors, or exaggerated) to the point that he was exiled, but they easily acknowledged his skills.
And didn't the elders wonder how this secluded gay emo suddenly became competent in decision-making and dark arts??? They just listen to his investigations, but if it was me--a similar secluded gay emo--I wouldn't be given the time of the day. We could also blame it on Wei Wuxian's natural charm and confidence, but still. Imagine you have a weird cousin who flirts at everyone and is quite loose in the head, then suddenly he knows how to play violin and Zac Efron or Harry Styles or Jungkook (whichever poor male usual Wattpad protagonist you could think of) starts protecting him.
And he's suddenly hanging around the venerable Hanguang Jun because he mentioned he likes him (in animation at least) and Lan Wangji just... let's him??? There's something gay going on here.
And Jinling, the kid who got the Jiang's temper and the Jin's elitist attitude, starts seeing him as a proper uncle who taught him how to fight. Awwww. Finally, he got an emotionally supportive uncle for once in his life with the many uncles he has. But Mo Xuanyu was the most distant uncle, living in Mo village and all. I mean, how did he process that?
And the rest of the juniors, Lan Jingyi, Lan Shizui, and Ouyang Zizhen, just decided to follow him like ducklings.
My point is...
How did the cultivation world process Mo Xuanyu in their heads?

You're right! Now that you mentioned the 'PEACE' that the three of them worked for, it's a lot more devastating for Lan Xichen, who was left with nothing but the fall of the cultivation world due to the crimes of Jin Guangyao. Though it was built through war crimes, it was peace nonetheless, and Lan Xichen put so much trust in that peace. We know that Wangxian got their justice and are now traveling all-over the world, Wen Ning and A-yuan reunited and paid respects to their dead clan, Jiang Cheng can now erase the hatred in his heart, Nie Huaisang got his justice and gained soaring reputation (for some reasons), heck even Mo Xuanyu can now rest in peace, BUT WHAT ABOUT LXC? Lost two brothers, lost trust, and he probably felt like an object used in the schemes of two (possibly more) people he less expected to use him. His last scenes on both animation and drama was emotional to me. Everybody was happy, but Lan Xichen was the only one who looked lost.
I know there are many (too many) tragic characters in MDSZ, but I just realized how tragic Lan Xichen is as a side character.
Imagine having a genuine bond with this random bullied guy who saved you during a war and you also have a childhood bestie who's well-principled but has chi issues, but your bestie died and his chi dissonance was caused by a poisoned tune rearranged by your new bestie from the tune you taught him. You thought yo besties getting along well, but they cat-fighting behind you. Then years later your childhood bestie's spirit is rampaging around, then your brother and his own new bestie (gay brother of your new bestie) investigates and eventually found out that YOUR NEW BESTIE is heinous and wretched but naauuurrr he's a good person I think he likes me really huhu I can change him so you about to heal him but then YOUR CHILDHOOD BESTIE 's brother, your younger brother's weak-ass former classmate, tricked you into killing your new bestie so now you have to live alone, probably with trust issues.
Also your brother's new bestie is just his old bestie/boyfriend who was framed for the crimes of your bestie. So there's that. At least one of the people you know got a good ending.
