I remember when I saw world heroes mission, I got the little booklet on my first watch, but by the second or third day when I went to see it again, they were already out and had since been listed on eBay by resellers.

So glad those "Rei was so afraid of Touya that she saw him in Shouto and that's why she burned him" takes can finally die thanks to the extra panels Hori decided to add to volume 31. The root of Rei's mental health issues was her husband, her abuser - not her children who were also victims of her abuser. Her children's physical likeness to Endeavor (the eyes) is what struck fear in her, and in a moment of terror, she thought Shouto was Endeavor and she attacked. This wasn't an action against Shouto or Touya personally. It was self defense against Endeavor. Endeavor was the Todoroki family antagonist. It's stated multiple times in the manga through text and visuals. It wasn't Touya. The aggressor was Endeavor.

Endeavor trying to atone in the present day doesn't diminish the abuse he put his family through, nor does it invalidate their pain. Hori's portrayal of how Endeavor's abuse escalated through the years doesn't retcon the abuse, nor does it diminish his responsibility at all. He was physical with Shouto and Rei, and emotionally neglectful to his other children. The fact that the family is gathered in Endeavor's hospital room after he barely regained consciousness after narrowly surviving a battle and are confronting him about his actions TO HIS FACE and he didn't deny it is proof enough. He knows he's responsible and started all the dysfunction in the family.

Anyway, Endeavor is the root cause of the Todoroki family's pain. If he hadn't abused his wife, Rei wouldn't have had a mental breakdown and burned Shouto. Touya wouldn't have spiraled. Natsuo wouldn't have lost his brother, his mother, and the chance to play with his little brother. Fuyumi wouldn't have had to grow up too fast.

It's cause and effect.

Guesses to what made shouto so mad? My guess is something happens to a family member or he's training and something sets him off to evolve his quirk.

Yeah, my money is on quirk evolution too. So many people have pointed out the similar pose/expression between Touya and Shouto last chapter and it is really striking.

Also in the Stain-All Might talk, the class was likened to the embers left behind by All Might turning into a roaring blaze. It's a lot of fire imagery.

The catalyst for Touya's quirk evolution was his emotional turmoil.

It seems like Shouto is on the cusp of going through something similar. He's only 2 years older than Touya was at the time and he's under tremendous emotional stress. Another interesting parallel is that at the time Touya wanted to regain Endeavor's approval, while Shouto right now seems to be wanting to (re)gain the trust and approval of the citizens. So I think, he is ready to unlock something.

But unlike Touya, who was alone in it - his background is nothing but a burning inferno, Shouto is surrounded by his friends and is fuelled by a desire to return to his origin, his freedom to define himself.

Touya's trigger to the Sekoto peak fire was his pain over the abandonment by Endeavor. So I think Shouto's trigger is going to be also tied to his family - seeing someone threatened or hurt, maybe. Seeing how much Endeavor close-ups we had, and Shouto telling him things like "we are doing this together", I think it's most likely that he will be the trigger some way.

Training seems less likely to me, just purely from the fact that the streets are full of villains, and we have a class of hero students with licenses - it makes no sense for them to do mock training inside the school when they can just go and do the real thing.

Something that immediately drew my attention from the most recent cover reveal: the hands.

Because Horikoshi, am I right?

AM and Deku both see OFA as this sacred torch that has been passed unto them, something to protect and die for, and it's reflected here in the expressions of awe and the hands that cradle something precious.

It seems as if their student uniforms are melting off of them to reveal their hero costumes, perhaps to emphasize how they never had much of a childhood left once they were entrusted with this power, as they had to keep pushing ahead with no time to enjoy those last few years of highschool.

It's exactly what's happening to Deku in these chapters. He sees himself as a vessel for OFA and forsakes his well being, pushing himself beyond his limits, so afraid to bring destruction upon those he loves.

And I remember another cover where I saw a similar hand gesture, quite recently in fact:

Same hands that reach for something precious, back before a time where OFA wasn't in the picture.

Cradling the hand of a boy who was quirkless, but never hesitated to lend a hand to someone in need.

BnHA Chapter 324: Is There a Force Field Around Him??

Previously on BnHA: Flashback!Rat Principal was all “please tell Midoriya that I spent a concerningly small amount of money upgrading U.A. into a wacky physics-defying funtime grid so as to make the final battle much more confusing for everyone.” Present Day!Mic (or Present!Mic, if you will) and Jeanist were all “if only somebody could deescalate this dangerously unhinged mob, we’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas.” Ochako was all “LISTEN UP PEOPLE.” The mob was all, “god??” Ochako was all, “NO, IT’S ME, OCHAKO. I’M REALLY HIGH UP ON THIS BUILDING AND THE VISIBILITY IS LOW DUE TO THE RAIN, SO I CAN SEE HOW YOU MIGHT MAKE THAT MISTAKE. ANYWAYS, DEKU WAS OUT THERE RISKING HIS LIFE FOR YOU CLOWNS EVEN THOUGH HE’S JUST A KID, SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU COULD ALL REMEMBER HOW TO BE DECENT HUMAN BEINGS, THANKS.” Let’s see if her Big Scolding Energy has any impact.

Today on BnHA: Horikoshi is all “so I have this speech planned out, and it’s really good, but it also only really needs about 6 to 8 pages, but I’m gonna see if I can stretch it out to 17 pages so I can kill time before we get to the next volume cliffhanger two weeks from now.” Anyway but it really is a good speech though. There are feels, and tears, and more talk about how Deku is so in need of a shower that just looking at him requires a tetanus booster, and more feels, and more tears, and bonus ship drama, and an iconic callback to the very first chapter which reframes the entire series in a new context in a totally epic and moving way, and it’s all very good. Except that Horikoshi is determined to never let anyone actually give this kid a hug. Who hurt you, dude.

omg we are opening on a callback to chapter 212, a.k.a. the chapter with by far the cutest flashback that doesn’t involve any baby Todorokis

baby Ochako is lethally cute. she could literally murder someone with her cuteness. I just want to scoop her up and play airplane with her until she accidentally activates her quirk while we’re spinning around and we both helicopter up into the air never to be seen again

“a child’s insistence” huh well that’s all well and good, but I sure hope this doesn’t mean we’re going to drag out the whole “sternly lecture the obnoxious citizens” plot for another whole chapter. no offense but I think we’re good

so page 2 is just continuing the whole happy/worried faces monologue, which of course is very important to Ochako’s character as it provides the context for why “who protects the heroes” ended up becoming her thing. and this is making me think we actually are in for a whole second chapter of this sob. when will my boy finally get to rest

I was going back and binging Ochako chapters this past week for reasons, and I gotta say it really stuck out to me just how often these two are paired with each other. they do everything together. it’s a really sweet friendship that often goes unappreciated but it’s very cute

BUT, jokes aside, truth be told this is the exact right approach to take imo, and something that’s long overdue. I’ve said this before, but this new generation of heroes is shaping up to be much more transparent than the All Might generation. they’re basically abandoning the almighty, untouchable Superman “heroes as gods” concept in favor of the more nuanced “heroes as people” concept instead. and that’s a good thing. seeing their heroes as humans, with human limitations and weaknesses and flaws, will hopefully not only lead to more scrutiny and accountability, but also more awareness of how hard some of them are working and how much they’re sacrificing. that’s something All Might never quite grasped back at the start of the series -- that the weak, vulnerable, injured him could be just as inspiring as the mighty, invincible him -- perhaps even more so. there’s a power in seeing otherwise ordinary people show extraordinary bravery and compassion. it inspires others to try and do the same

BnHA Ch.331 - Review, parallels & comparisons

This is an odd chapter. Lots of text and big art pieces, yet not much actually happens? Let’s see what nuggets we can extract.

The first few pages are AFO!Shig!Tenko analyzing Star’s quirk in gamer terms. Not only is this kinda rambly like Izuku’s muttering, it’s finding a way to win using the video game analogies that both Izuku and Katsuki have used. Is this a new hint Katsuki will be important in saving Tenko???

When Katsuki was kidnapped by the LOV, Shigaraki thought he and Katsuki would have some things in common. Shigaraki attempted to “turn” Katsuki by talking about how oppressive rules can be. The rules of hero society cause suffering, even for fledgling heroes, right??? Of course, Katsuki didn’t buy it. He found a way to be himself, even within hero society. He never let rules or appearances constrain him. But if Shiggy can steal New Order…if he can make his own new rules, then Shiggy can change it all. Yes, I know the “urge” is AFO talking, but I feel like a part of Shigaraki is excited too.

The other thing that stood out to me was the true re-emergence of Tenko as a distinct identity. We haven’t really seen Shigaraki explicitly refer to himself as a Shimura before. (Meanwhile, calling her Ms. Star is adorable and oddly respectful; remember, Shiggy isn’t trying to kill her):

Awww, Mon!!! I LOVE Shiggy thinking about his dog. But not merely that he misses his dog — he’s asking if his dog has sufficient self-awareness to fall victim to Star. Could she pet a dog, say it’s name, and make it attack? Probably not. What else doesn’t have a sufficient sense of self? How about the Nomu? How about AFO himself? How about anyone else struggling with a duality…maybe a hero/villain name or family name that isn’t who they truly are? Maybe someone who can change appearance? Or maybe someone whose body houses vestiges, or pieces of other people? This part is VERY nicely aligned with the two most recent Vigilantes chapters.

Speaking of names and identity, Star’s name is officially translated as Cassie, not Kathy. She (and Agpar, and by extension, America) are competing to “surpass All Might” just like Endeavor, who she name-checks. But she’s not trying to surpass All Might by saving; she’s killing to win. You can criticize All Might’s sacrificial tendencies and “pillar” approach if you want, but he NEVER would ask a squad to go down at his sole direction. Cassie’s fist bumping her bros like Uraraka, but do NOT mistake this for true teamwork. This is following orders from a reckless leader committing war crimes, and the pilots know it.

Star’s behavior is recognized in canon as extreme, even for the extraordinary circumstances, but it’s also shrugged off because Number One Hero and Surpass All Might. It shows just how much restraint All Might must have used; how much his heart really mattered when wielding such a powerful quirk.

Also the Endeavor name drop makes me think…. will he join in this fight? I’ve been wondering if he can bring himself to attack Shiggy again. If he agrees with Star that Shiggy needs to die…..that means his villainous serial killer son might be deserving of death too. Or maybe Horikoshi was just being a goof and playing off this:

That brings us to Tiamat. Yes, the name is a reference to a Babylonian goddess of the sea from which other gods were born, and a powerfully evil dragon goddess/queen of the dragons in DnD. But it is ALSO a reference to Barrage (Horikoshi’s series before BnHA) as seen in the Vol 32 preview, which was part of Vol 31. See @hanashimas post here for detailed scans & translations. In Barrage, “Tiamat” is a young, powerful knight and astute military commander who is loyal to the crown and afraid of women — funny given his namesake. In Ch.331, Tiamat is the name of the missiles headed to destroy Shigaraki, the man-child gamer who sometimes gives off incel vibes, at the direction of a woman.

FWIW, Barrage is only 16 chapters long, and I do recommend reading it as there are similar themes, even some exact dialogue, that makes its way into BnHA. I haven’t included anything specific here about Tiamat’s character arc, although you can probably guess some of it. :)

If a fleet of these hit Shigaraki on the ground, it’s certain to cause destruction of the surrounding area. But Shigaraki — or AFO — might be able to use radio waves to change the flight path….

BNHA Chapter 325 Spoiler Analysis: United As One

The week has passed and so has summer.  Damn...  At least Shonen Jump’s got my back.  And Deku is finally welcome home thank god.  Now, give this kid a damn good meal, sleep, and a motherfreaking bath already.  NGL, this week has been busy for me and I’m tired AF, so I think I’ll only go over the parts that stuck out to me:

Man, god bless Kota for running up to Izuku to help him!  This kid has been through so much yet he still decided to run up to Izuku to help him.  He’s sobbing his eyes out too 😭.  I’m pretty sure he’s apologizing for not moving during the Muscular fight (in Kota’s defense, Izuku would’ve probably died if not for Kota) and he’s telling Izuku that “I am here” (OF COURSE HE SAYS THOSE WORDS) so Izuku doesn’t need to cry anymore.  And to top it all off, Kota calls Izuku “Nii-chan” which I’m pretty sure means older brother 😭❤️ If Horikoshi brings Eri in next week, I’m going to cry waterfalls dammit

The Fox Lady is so kind and pretty dammit Horikoshi give her a name already!  She’s so happy to see Deku again and thanks him for saving her.  Even calls him “Mr. Crybaby Hero” 😭  The way she picks him up like a small child is both sweet and funny too ☺️ I await the fanart!

A-AND THEN SHE AND KOTA HUG DEKU 😭💚💚💚💚

On a more serious note, the Fox Lady mentions that she got rejected from a lot of evacuation centers because they don’t accept mutant types like her.  Of course discrimination still exists in this world.  Of freakin’ course.  Just like in the real world...  And considering that Horikoshi mentioned that Shoji would have a role in the future and also show his face finally in some interviews (Horikoshi also teased that he wanted to give Shoji a bigger story YEARS ago), I have a feeling this subject will be brought up again in the future.

The Old Star Man from the first chapter/episode who encourages Deku to be a hero returns this chapter to give a big speech to the crowd.  This guy is a real one ✊.  Basically, he says that the crowd needs to shut up and understand what’s going on for a hot minute.  That everyone projected All Might’s “Perfect Heroness” onto the every other hero that they all forgot that Heroes are just people at the end of the day.  If the people don’t support the heroes still fighting now, they’re screwed.  Ultimately, it’s the civilians who have to save the heroes when they’re hurting.  Not just other heroes.  Horikoshi, please give this man a name too, he’s long deserved it.

Then the boy in the All Might shirt who’s been protesting for the past 2 chapters says something reasonable for once.  His views on Deku have been mixed around thanks to all the things that have been rumored about Deku on the internet and word of mouth.  Which kinda justifies his anger and doubt, but he still should’ve have been a jerk to Deku and Ochako.  

Deku finally speaks a full sentence declaring that he and his friends and mentors will make everything ok again.  I can’t wait to see that promise be fulfilled, my son 💚

We change focus to Shoto, Endeavor, and Hawks (who are confirmed to have been outside the barrier for the past few chapters; I was wondering about that).  They’re finally being allowed into UA for now.  Unfortunately the 3 of them probably would’ve caused more discourse if they entered while the civilians were rioting.  Endeavor and Hawks from the press release and just Shoto existing really.  Please let them stay there permanently.  

Gotta say that Endeavor looks so freaking tired throughout this whole thing.  The Toya thing + The Deku thing must be weighing extremely heavy on him.  I do feel bad for him honestly.  

Hawks tells Endeavor how OFA has, in a way, connected everyone together.  All Might to Deku to Class 1-A back to Deku to Ochako to the people.  And if the people can truly care for others, then the future will be bright and heroes will have all the time in the world just like Hawks wanted at the very beginning of his story.

There’s this really beautiful double page spread (teased in one of Vol. 31′s extras) of the civilians offering their umbrellas to the kids.  Kirishima’s crying happy tears, Kota and Mineta are running up to Deku, the All Might Shirt dude is offering Deku his umbrella, Kaminari is smacking Bakugo over the head 😂, Iida’s holding Deku’s hand to guide him, and INKO FINALLY GETS TO BE WITH HER SON THANK THE LORD 💚😭 

Shoto 💙 Our resident pretty boy is looking at this scene and ultimately decides that he and Endeavor are going to stop Dabi together.  He decided this before back in the hospital, but I think his decision is more final here.  I really need him to properly reunite with Deku though and I’m sure they have A LOT to talk about.

AND WE FINALLY GET TO PROPERLY SEE AIZAWA AFTER GOD KNOWS HOW LONG AND HE’S SO HANDSOME 🖤 MY MAN IS LOOKING GOOD WITH AN EYEPATCH?!?  And he does have a prosthetic robot leg and apparently Mirko does too.  God, he looks so tired, but he’s so proud of his kids Imma cry again 😭

Anyway, it’s looks like he’s still recovering from the war in the hospital and apparently also there to help with the whole Kurogiri situation, who’s been transferred to a research lab.  It seems like Aizawa’s trying to bring back Shirakumo somehow.  If they do, I wonder if Shirakumo will even still be alive.  We can assume that he might still be alive since he did tell the Heroes about the hospital, but it’s uncertain.  It would be nice to have that sweet soul back 🌤

Also, the Heroes are aware that Himiko Toga’s still out there and they’re taking extra persuasions to make sure she isn’t one of the refugees.  They also know her limits too, so that’s good.

The last panel is of All Might standing outside of UA, but his back is turned against them.  He has this uncertain look on his face too.  I honestly can’t read it for the life of me.  I gotta wonder why he isn’t walking in there now that everything seems to be ok.  Maybe he doesn’t want to accidentally cause more problems?  The public did start to hate him with the whole “I Am Not Here” sign on his statue in Kamino...  Deku does need him though.  Ugh, I’m so worried for this man.

And I do have a theory.  It’s a long shot and a dark one: What if Toga found Stain while running off and they teamed up together.  Then Stain found and took All Might captive and Toga took some of All Might’s blood to transform into him and now she’s the one outside of UA.  I can’t say if All Might is dead or not.  I really, really, REALLY, don’t want him to be dead.  Stain says that All Might is the only one truly worthy of being a Hero, so I doubt he would actively kill All Might.  But, god there’s so many death flags surrounding this man.  I don’t even know if he’s going to make it through the entire series tbh.

The end chapter teaser says “The rain continues on...” so I doubt this pain is over.  We have a bit of a calm, but I am so anticipating the next storm.
